Abstract
BACKGROUND Prognostic value of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for pulmonary embolism (PE) has been reported in several retrospective studies. The purpose of this investigation was to perform a pooled analysis and external validation of predictive value of NLR. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched from inception to November 5, 2022. A random effects model was used. Grade was used to evaluate the certainty of evidence. External validation was conducted in clinical cohorts before and after a propensity scoring matching (PSM). Covariates include basic clinical characteristics, such as age, gender, etc. The value of NLR in prediction model was also evaluated. RESULTS A total of 15 studies comprising 5,874 patients were included. Pooled risk ratio of NLR was 2.33 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.97-2.75), with an area under the curve of 0.78 (95% CI: 0.74-0.81), a sensitivity of 0.75 (95% CI: 0.71-0.79), a specificity of 0.67 (95% CI: 0.61-0.73), and a median cut-off value of 5.7. Grade of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation (GRADE) certainty analysis showed the quality of the evidence was moderate. Before (n = 336) and after (n = 152) propensity scoring matching, risk ratio of NLR was 2.69 (95% CI: 1.04-6.97) and 6.58 (95% CI: 1.99-17.75). A prediction model consisting of NLR, age, D-dimer, and simplified PE severity index had an area under the curve of 0.809 (95% CI: 0.738-0.88), a sensitivity of 0.638 (95% CI: 0.511-0.745), and a specificity of 0.851 (95% CI: 0.709-0.917). Net reclassification index (12%, P = 0.035) and integrated discrimination improvement (17%, P = 0.022) indicated an improvement caused by NLR. CONCLUSIONS Prognostic value of NLR for PE was confirmed by meta-analysis and validated in an independent cohort, deserving further clinical application.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this review was to examine the association between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mortality rates in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). Methods PubMed Central, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for studies reporting the association between NLR and PLR with mortality up to March 17th 2023. Adjusted ratios were sourced from studies and combined to generate pooled outcomes as odds ratio (OR) in a random-effects model. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. Results Fifteen studies were included. Meta-analysis showed that NLR was a significant predictor of mortality in patients with PE (OR: 1.42 95% CI: 1.26, 1.61 I2=92%). Results were unchanged on sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis based on study location, method of diagnosis, sample size, overall mortality rates, cut-offs, and follow-up. Pooled analysis failed to demonstrate PLR as a predictor of mortality in patients with PE (OR: 1.00 95% CI: 1.00, 1.01 I2=57%). Results were unchanged on sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis based on study location, diagnosis of PE, overall mortality rates, and cut-off. Conclusion Current evidence from retrospective studies shows that NLR can independently predict mortality in acute PE. Data on PLR was limited and failed to indicate an independent role in the prognosis of PE patients. Registration No. PROSPERO (CRD42023407573).

Abstract
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the role of the pre- and postoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting intensive care unit (ICU) admission and postoperative length of stay (LOS) in bariatric surgery. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analysed 96 patients who underwent bariatric surgery at our institution. The NLR and PLR were calculated in the pre- and postoperative stages. Changes in pre- and postoperative hematological ratios were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The optimal cutoff values and area under the curve (AUC) for each ratio were calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Multivariate linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between each ratio and the postoperative LOS after adjusting for age, sex, and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score. Results: The median age of our patients was 35.50 years, and 54.2% were male. The preoperative NLR showed a significant increase from 1.44 to 6.38 postoperatively (p < 0.001). The PLR increased from 107.08 preoperatively to 183.58 postoperatively, p < 0.001). ROC analysis showed that the postoperative NLR was a moderate to high predictor of ICU admission (AUC = 0.700, optimal cutoff point = 5.987). The postoperative PLR had less predictive power for ICU admission (AUC = 0.641, optimal cutoff point = 170.950). Ratios that had a statistically significant relationship with the postoperative LOS were the preoperative NLR (standardized β [95% CI]: 0.296 [0.115-0.598]), postoperative NLR (0.311 [0.034-0.161]), and postoperative PLR (0.236 [0.000-0.005]). Conclusions: The NLR and PLR demonstrated an independent relationship with the postoperative LOS after bariatric surgery and the predictive ability of ICU admission. Both ratios might be useful as simple markers to predict patient outcome after surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and risk stratification indicators as well as thrombus burden in patients with moderate-to-high risk acute pulmonary embolism (APE), and to assess the changes in these parameters following interventional therapy. METHODS This study retrospectively included patients with moderate-to-high risk APE who were admitted to the Department of Interventional Vascular Surgery at Putian First Hospital from May 2020 to May 2024. All patients received anticoagulation therapy, pulmonary artery catheter-directed thrombolysis, and/or mechanical thrombectomy. Patients were further divided into subgroup A if they did not present with any of the following conditions at admission: a) acute inflammatory diseases (including lung infections); b) malignant tumors; c) history of trauma or surgery within the past 2 months. Patients with any of the aforementioned conditions were classified as subgroup B. Additionally, 50 healthy individuals were randomly selected as the healthy control group. RESULTS The NLR and PLR in subgroup A were significantly lower than those in subgroup B (P < .01). Compared with the healthy control group, the NLR in the APE group and subgroup A was significantly higher (P < .001). There were no significant differences in NLR and PLR between the troponin I-negative and troponin I-positive groups (P > .05), or between the N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP)-negative and NT-proBNP-positive groups (P > .05). There were no significant correlations between NLR and PLR with risk stratification indicators and pulmonary artery embolism index (P > .05). Compared with before treatment, NLR, troponin I, NT-proBNP, right ventricular diameter/left ventricular diameter ratio, and pulmonary artery embolism index were significantly reduced after treatment (P < .05), while there was no significant difference in PLR before and after treatment (P > .05). CONCLUSION Elevated NLR in patients with APE, which decreases after effective treatment, may be used for assessing disease status and treatment efficacy. However, there is no correlation between NLR and risk stratification indicators or thrombus burden. PLR does not demonstrate significant value in assessing APE.

Abstract
Accumulating data have shown a pathophysiological association between inflammatory pathways and thrombosis. Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and acute pulmonary embolism (APE), is a significant health burden. It involves not only hemodynamic disturbances due to the emboli occluding the pulmonary arteries, but also platelet activation, endothelial dysfunction, and "firing up" of the inflammatory cascade. In humans, the systemic inflammatory state can also be evaluated using plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin (IL)-6, which correlate with venous obstruction, thrombus extension, and clinical VTE complications such as postthrombotic syndrome, recurrent thromboembolism, worse quality of life, and functional impairment. The exaggerated inflammatory state during postthrombotic syndrome aligns with severe alterations in endothelial function, such as activation of intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 and E-selectin, as well as vascular proteolysis and fibrinolysis. Moreover, a hypercoagulable state, indicated by higher levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and factor VIII, is closely associated with the inflammatory response. We aimed to describe the role of basic inflammatory markers in daily clinical practice as well as the most important cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-a [TNF-α], growth differentiation factor-15 [GDF-15]). These markers could provide valuable insight into the interplay between thrombosis and inflammation, helping inform better management and treatment strategies.

Abstract
To determine whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are correlated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the first day of prematurity and to help with early warning, identification, and intervention in the development of BPD. From January 2017 to June 2022, newborns who were diagnosed with BPD conducted a retrospective cohort study. Complete blood cells were measured within the first 24 hours of life in preterm neonates of 32 gestational weeks with BPD as the observation group and non-BPD infants as the control group. In all groups, the NLR and PLR levels were measured. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the data. In this research 76 cases of non-BPD and 48 cases of BPD were used as controls. Compared with the non-BPD group, the NLR and PLR levels were considerably higher in the BPD group. Logistic regression analysis suggested that NLR and PLR were independent risk factors for BPD (OR [odds ratio]: 3.786; 95% CI [confidence interval]: 1.75-8.16; P < .05; OR: 3.391; 95% CI: 1.85-28.78; P < .05). The findings may demonstrate that higher NLR and PLR are independently and significantly associated with the development of BPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Risk prediction rules are important to establish appropriate treatment and management strategy for patients with different risk classification of pulmonary embolism (PE). Neutrophils are considered to be related to PE as an essential marker of inflammation. However, few studies have reported the association between neutrophil levels and risk classification of acute PE (APE). The aim of this study was to investigate the role of neutrophil levels upon admission in the assessment of risk classification of APE. METHODS A total of 299 consecutive APE patients and 90 patients without APE confirmed by computed tomographic pulmonary angiography were retrospectively screened. APE patients were stratified into two subgroups according to clinical guidelines: low- (n = 233) and intermediate- and high-risk (n = 60) APE. RESULTS The neutrophil levels in intermediate- and high-risk APE patients were significantly higher compared to low-risk APE or non-APE patients (P < 0.001). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, neutrophil levels were significantly and independently associated with intermediate- and high-risk APE (odds ratio = 1.239, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.055-1.455, P = 0.009). Neutrophil levels were positively correlated with the pulmonary embolism severity index score (r = 0.357, P < 0.001), high sensitive C-reactive protein, D-dimer and pulmonary artery obstruction index (PAOI), in the overall population of APE patients. Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that neutrophils had a better diagnostic value for intermediate- and high-risk APE (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.760, 95% CI 0.695-0.826; P < 0.001) compared to PAOI (AUC = 0.719) and D-dimer (AUC = 0.645). CONCLUSIONS High neutrophil levels upon admission were significantly and independently associated with intermediate- and high-risk APE, which could be regarded as an indicator of inflammation and thrombosis in APE simultaneously. The potent diagnostic role of neutrophil levels and their competitive advantage over PAOI and D-dimer for the assessment of APE risk classification are suggested.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of our study was to investigate the prognostic role of platelet/albumin ratio in patients treated under emergency conditions for peptic ulcer perforation (PUP). METHODS A retrospective study involving emergency patients who were operated for PUP was carried out. The patients were divided into 2 groups: PUP patients who died after surgical treatment (PUP-M) and PUP patients who survived after surgical treatment (PUP-S). The laboratory values of the patients were compared statistically. A P value of <.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS This cohort study consisted of 171 patients treated between June 2013 and December 2019. The mean age of the patients was 46.3 ± 20.5 years; and 33 (19.3%) patients were women. The age (P ≤ .001), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (P = .02), lactic dehydrogenase to albumin ratio (P ≤ .001), and platelet/albumin ratio (PAR; P ≤ .001) values were high and lymphocyte count was low (P = .006) in the PUP-M group. A positive correlation was determined between length of stay in hospital and age (P ≤ .001), lactic dehydrogenase/albumin ratio (P ≤ .001), platelet count (P = .044), and PAR (P ≤ .001). A substantial negative correlation was determined between length of stay in hospital and albumin count (P ≤ .001). CONCLUSIONS We determined a high preoperative PAR level in PUP patients who had undergone surgery as a negative prognostic parameter. PAR is a candidate biomarker for clinical practice.

Abstract
Acute pulmonary embolism is a cardiovascular emergency with a significant morbidity and mortality. In the last decade, attempts have been made to find prognostic markers for pulmonary embolism. We conducted a systematic review of the literature for studies that assess the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and disease progression in patients with pulmonary embolism. We included a total of seven studies published between 2016 and 2021, reporting on a total of 4,272 patients. The mean NLR observed in these studies was 5.93, with values ranging from 5.12 to 7.3. Elevated NLR was significantly associated with an increased rate of mortality in all studies. Furthermore, the collected data revealed a 2-to-15 times higher mortality rate in the group with NLR values higher than the mean. Due to its accessibility and the simplicity with which it can be calculated, as well as the outcomes revealed in this review, we strongly emphasize that NLR should be used more in medical practice.

Abstract
Background To investigate the levels of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratios in those having a pulmonary embolism (PE) in the course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods The records of those having COVID-19 were retrospectively obtained from the hospital automation system. NLR and PLR were measured with the help of patients’ blood cell counts. Results Of 1,452 COVID-19 patients, 17 (1.2%) were diagnosed with PE. Compared with the controls, while leukocyte (p = 0.001), neutrophil (p <0.001), and neutrophil percentages, (p = 0.001) and NLR (p <0.001) and PLR (p = 0.006) had higher values, lymphocyte count (p = 0.004) and lymphocyte percentage (p <0.001) showed lower values in the patients with PE. Compared to the survivors, the non-survivors were found to have increased leukocyte (p <0.001), neutrophil (p <0.001), and neutrophil percentages (p <0.001), NLR (p <0.001) and PLR (p <0.001), and decreased lymphocyte (p <0.001) counts and percentage (p <0.001), hemoglobin (p = 0.005), hematocrit (p = 0.012), and platelet counts (p <0.001). While NLR and PLR cutoffs were found as 4.338 and 187.83 in predicting PE, the cutoff values of NLR and PLR were, respectively, 4.301 and 172.5 in predicting mortality. The logistic regression analysis also revealed that all hematological parameters had no effects on the development of PE. Conclusion Although NLR and PLR had higher scores in PE patients, no relationship was determined between the levels of NLR and PLR and PE development. Further prospective studies including larger populations are required to enlighten the increased NLR and PLR in PE patients having COVID-19. Abstract
Pulmonary embolism (PE) clinical manifestations vary widely, and that scope is not fully captured by current all-cause mortality risk models. PE is associated with inflammatory, coagulation, and hemostatic imbalances so blood cellular indices may be prognostically useful. Complete blood count (CBC) data may improve current risk models like the simplified pulmonary embolism severity index (sPESI) for all-cause mortality, offering greater accuracy and analytic ability. Acute PE patients (n = 228) with confirmatory diagnostic imaging were followed for all-cause mortality. Blood cellular indices were assessed for association to all-cause mortality and were supplemented into sPESI using multivariate logistic regression. Multiple blood cellular indices were found to be significantly associated with all-cause mortality in acute PE. sPESI including red cell distribution width, hematocrit and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio had better predictive ability as compared to sPESI alone (AUC: 0.852 vs 0.754). Blood cellular indices contribute an inflammatory and hemodynamic perspective not currently included in sPESI. CBC with differential is a widely used, low-cost test that can augment current risk stratification tools for all-cause mortality in acute PE patients.

Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), has been an important cause of sudden in-hospital death. Studies have shown that the immune/inflammatory response plays an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular disease, with representative markers in the blood including the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), systemic immune/inflammatory index (SII), etc. However, there is a variety of immune/inflammatory indicators. Moreover, most previous studies have been single-center investigations involving one or two indicators, with varying nature of cases, number of cases and study objectives, thereby making it difficult to reach consensus conclusions with good clinical guidelines. This article reviews the clinical value of immunoinflammatory indicators for VTE based on previous studies, including the diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. In conclusion, NLR provides promising predictive capability for the onset and prognosis of VTE and deserves extensive application in clinical practice. PLR also has certain diagnostic and prognostic value, but further studies are warranted to identify its reliability and stability. Monocytes, eosinophils and platelet-related indicators show some clinical association with VTE, although the predictive capabilities are mediocre. SII is of promising potential value for VTE and deserves further investigations. This review will provide new clues and valuable clinical guidance for the diagnosis and therapy of VTE.

Abstract
Objective The present study aims to investigate whether the serum levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), troponin I (TnI), and D-dimer, in addition to the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), can be used to determine the prognosis of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (APE). Methods Data were collected from 72 patients that were diagnosed with APE in our hospital from January 2015 to December 2018. These patients were divided into three groups: a high-risk group (n = 10), a moderate-risk group (n = 33), and a low-risk group (n = 29). The serum levels of BNP, TnI, and D-dimer were determined, and the NLR was measured. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the diagnostic value of the single and combined detection of BNP, TnI, and D-dimer, and the NLR was used to determine the prognosis of patients with APE. Results The serum levels of BNP, TnI, and D-dimer were significantly higher in the high-risk group than they were in the moderate-risk and low-risk groups (P < 0.05). The serum levels of BNP, TnI, and D-dimer were also significantly higher in the moderate-risk group than they were in the low-risk group (P < 0.05). The serum levels of BNP, TnI, and D-dimer, as well as the NLR, were all significantly higher in the death group than they were in the survival group (P < 0.05). For the combined detection of the four indices, the area under the ROC curve was 0.92, the sensitivity was 0.889, and the specificity was 0.904; each of these values was higher than the corresponding values of single detection. Conclusion In patients with APE, higher serum levels of BNP, TnI, D-dimer and NLR are associated with a higher risk stratification, greater severity of disease, and an increased risk of death.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious pathology with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Studies regarding the efficacy of new inflammatory markers as a predictor of mortality in PE have thus far been limited. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/mean platelet volume (PLT/MPV), and C-reactive protein (CRP) on short-term and long-term mortality in patients with PE. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective, observational cohort study was carried out in a tertiary teaching hospital. Patients with PE hospitalized in the pulmonology ward were enrolled. Their characteristics, hemogram parameters, PLR, NLR, CRP levels, PLT/MPV on admission, and mortality were recorded. The predictive accuracies of inflammatory markers were determined through receiver operating characteristic curves. The risk factors for mortality were further analyzed with Cox regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 828 patients with PE were included in the study. The 1-month mortality was 1%, and the 1-year mortality was 8.5%. An NLR value above 6 was associated with an almost 13-fold increase in short-term (30-day) mortality. We found that an NLR above 3.15 and age were independent risk factors for long-term (1-year) mortality. The other inflammatory markers, namely PLR and CRP, were not found to be associated with long-term mortality. CONCLUSION PE is a serious condition in the elderly. Elevated NLR values appear to be a good and feasible predictor of inflammation, which can be correlated with higher mortality over both the short-term and long-term periods.

Abstract
Several studies have reported that the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) are associated with poor prognosis. This study investigated whether NLR and/or the MPV/platelet ratio could function as predictive markers of mortality in critically ill patients. We retrospectively reviewed 1,154 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) between January 2017 and December 2017. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to 1-year mortality. We compared the NLR and MPV/platelet ratio on each day of ICU admission. Patients were classified into tertiles based on their NLR and MPV/platelet ratios, and the incidence of 1-year mortality was compared. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were plotted to evaluate their potential as prognostic factors for 1-year mortality. The NLR and MPV/platelet ratio were higher in the non-survivor group than in the survivor group. The incidence of 1-year mortality was the highest in the third tertile for both the NLR and MPV/platelet ratio. The MPV/platelet ratio was an independent predictor for 1-year mortality based on the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Our data showed that the MPV/platelet ratio is a predictive factor for 1-year mortality in critically ill patients.

The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) to predict all-cause mortality in patients presenting with acute pulmonary embolism (PE). Three hundred consecutive patients with acute PE between March 2016 and December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. We identified 191 patients who met the study inclusion criteria. Twenty-eight patients died during the study period. There was a significant difference in PLR, but not NLR, between patients with low risk, submassive, and massive risk PE (P = .02 and P = .58, respectively, by the Kruskal-Wallis test). Elevated NLR and PLR were associated with all-cause mortality (P < .01 and P < .01, respectively). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio of 5.46 was associated with all-cause mortality with sensitivity of 75.0% and specificity of 66.9% (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.692 [95% confidence interval, CI]: 0.568-0.816); P < .01). Platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio of 256.6 was associated with all-cause mortality with sensitivity of 53.6% and specificity of 82.2% (AUC: 0.693 [95% CI: 0.580-0.805]; P < .01). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and PLR are simple biomarkers that are readily available from routine laboratory values and may be useful components of PE risk prediction models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This retrospective study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and albumin for 30-day mortality in patients with postoperative acute pulmonary embolism (PAPE). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 101 patients with PAPE admitted from September 1, 2012, to March 31, 2019. The characteristics, surgical information, admission examination data and mortality within 30 days after PAPE were obtained from our electronic medical recording system and follow-up. The associations between the NLR, PLR, and other predictors and 30-day mortality were analyzed with univariate and multivariate analyses. Then, the nomogram including the independent predictors was established and evaluated. RESULTS Twenty-four patients died within 30 days, corresponding to a 30-day mortality rate of 23.8%. The results of the multivariate analysis indicated that both the NLR and albumin were independent predictors for 30-day mortality in patients with PAPE. The probability of death increased by approximately 17.1% (OR = 1.171, 95% CI: 1.073-1.277, P = 0.000) with a one-unit increase in the NLR, and the probability of death decreased by approximately 15.4% (OR = 0.846, 95% CI: 0.762c-0.939, P = 0.002) with a one-unit increase in albumin. The area under the curve of the nomogram was 0.888 (95% CI: 0.812-0.964). CONCLUSION Our findings showed that an elevated NLR and decreased albumin were related to poor prognosis in patients with PAPE. The NLR and albumin were independent prognostic factors for PAPE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Left ventricular thrombosis (LVT) is a potentially devastating complication in post-acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Previous studies have demonstrated that inflammation may contribute to thrombus formation, but its role on thrombus resolution is uncertain. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are easily accessible haematological markers of inflammation. OBJECTIVES We aimed to identify differences between post-AMI LVT patients with and without LVT resolution, and to evaluate the utility of NLR and PLR in predicting LVT resolution. METHODS We included 289 consecutive post-AMI patients with LVT. Acute LVT was diagnosed based on echocardiogram. Patients were stratified based on LVT resolution. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate for independent predictors of thrombus resolution. RESULTS Compared to post-AMI patients with eventual LVT resolution, those with unresolved LVT had more co-morbidities such as hypertension (p = 0.003) and ischaemic heart disease (p < 0.001), fewer underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (p < 0.001) or were treated with triple therapy (p < 0.001). NLR (p = 0.064) and PLR (p = 0.028) were higher in unresolved LVT patients. In non-PCI patients, NLR (OR 0.818, 95% CI 0.674-0.994, p = 0.043) and PLR (OR 0.989, 95% CI 0.979-0.999, p = 0.026) were independent predictors of thrombus resolution after adjustment for age and anticoagulation use. CONCLUSIONS Post-AMI patients not receiving PCI may have a greater inflammatory response and a higher NLR and PLR, which is associated with less LVT resolution despite anticoagulation. Further studies are required to study this association.

Abstract
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. New biological markers are being investigated for estimating the prognosis of PE patients. Since PE is closely associated with inflammatory status, the neutrophil-lymphocyte (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte (PLR), and lymphocyte-monocyte (LMR) ratios were suggested to be useful in predicting patient outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of NLR, PLR, and LMR in PE. A total of 103 PE cases from a cardiology department were included in the study. We retrospectively evaluated demographic and clinical characteristics, treatments, laboratory and imaging findings, and outcomes of patients. The median follow-up of PE patients was 39 months, and the 5-year overall survival probability was 73.8%. Out of 103 patients, 20 were classified as high risk PE cases (19.4%). Thrombolytic treatment was administered to 23 patients (22.3%). Systolic pulmonary arterial pressure was measured during one year, showing a significant decrease from 51.7 ± 15.7 mmHg at admission to 26.6 ± 4.0 mmHg at first year assessment. Age (OR: 1.06, p < 0.001) and NLR (OR: 1.52, p < 0.0019) were significantly associated with the disease status. The independent prognostic factors in moderate-low and low risk PE groups were NLR (HR: 1.17, p = 0.033) and LMR (HR: 1.58, p = 0.046). In moderate-high and high risk PE patients, the independent prognostic factors were age (HR: 1.07, p = 0.014) and PLR (HR: 1.01, p = 0.046). NLR, PLR, and LMR were associated with the prognosis of PE patients. The clinical severity of PE should be considered when utilizing these markers to assess patient outcomes.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the inflammatory parameters including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the prognosis of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). Materials and methods In this retrospective study, a total of 41 patients with IGM who had no malignant disease or inflammatory pathologies were included between January 2010 and December 2017. The patients were divided into two groups according to presence or absence of recurrence. Subsequently, the relationship between patient characteristics, pre- and postoperative NLR and PLR levels and disease recurrence were evaluated. Results With a mean follow-up period of 28.4 months, 19.5% of patients were found to have recurrent IGM. Age, body mass index, patient characteristics such as oral contraceptive use, smoking status, and family history, surgical treatment and postoperative NLR, preoperative PLR, and postoperative PLR were not statistically significant between groups. However, only preoperative NLR was significantly associated with a recurrent IGM (p=0.024). Preoperative NLR predicted recurrence with a sensitivity of 62.5% and specificity of 84.8%. Conclusion These results demonstrated that a high level of NLR was predictive of poor outcome in patients with IGM.

Abstract
Background/aim While C-reactive protein (CRP) is a well-studied marker for predicting treatment response and mortality in sepsis, it was aimed to assess the efficacy of the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a predictor of mortality and treatment response in sepsis patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Materials and methods In this retrospective cross-sectional study, sepsis patients were divided according to the presence of septic shock on the 1st day of ICU stay, and then subgrouped according to mortality. Patient demographics, acute physiologic and chronic health evaluation II and sequential organ failure assessment scores, NLR and CRP (on the 1st, 3rd, and last day in the ICU), microbiology data, antibiotic responses, ICU data, and mortality were recorded. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the area under curve (AUC) were calculated for the inflammatory markers and ICU severity scores for mortality. Results Of the 591 (65% male) enrolled patients, 111 (18.8%) were nonsurvivors with shock, 117 (19.8%) were survivors with shock, 330 (55.8%) were survivors without shock, and 33 (5.6%) were nonsurvivors without shock. On the 1st day of ICU stay, the NLR and CRP were similar in all of the groups. On the 3rd day of antibiotic response, the NLR was increased (11.8) in the nonresponsive patients when compared with the partially responsive (11.0) and responsive (8.5) patients. If the NLR was ≥15 on the 3rd day, the mortality odds ratio was 6.96 (CI: 1.4–34.1, P < 0.017). The NLR and CRP on the 1st, 3rd, and last day of ICU stay (0.52, 0.58, 0.78 and 0.56, 0.70, 0.78, respectively) showed a similar increasing trend for mortality. Conclusion The NLR can predict mortality and antibiotic responsiveness in ICU patients with sepsis and septic shock. If the NLR is >15 on the 3rd day of postantibiotic initiation, the risk of mortality is high and treatment should be reviewed carefully.

Abstract
Background: Despite surgical treatment of peptic ulcer perforation (PUP), the high rates of morbidity and mortality have motivated researchers to search for new laboratory markers to predict morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between pre-operative laboratory values and demographic factors and post-operative mortality in patients undergoing surgery for PUP. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study was made of the clinical findings and laboratory data of patients operated on for a diagnosis of PUP in the general surgery clinic between 2014 and 2018. The patients were separated into two groups according to survival (PUP-S) or mortality (PUP-M) and the differences between the groups were evaluated. Result: In the analysis of the patient data, age (p = 0.014), female gender (p = 0.005), length of stay in hospital (p = 0.009), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (p = 0.09), and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (p = 0.010) values were determined to be high and lymphocyte count was low (p = 0.046) in the PUP-M group. A positive correlation was determined between mortality and age, length of stay in hospital, PLR, and NLR (p < 0.05). A substantial negative correlation was determined between mortality and gender and lymphocyte count (p < 0.05). As a result of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, it was determined that a PLR value <322.22 (p = 0.009) and lymphocyte count <0.67 × 103 microliter (p = 0.035) could have diagnostic value in the prediction of the possibility of mortality in patients operated on because of PUP. Conclusion: This study results suggested that PLR, NLR, and lymphocyte count values could be used as new biomarkers to identify the mortality risk in patients operated on for peptic ulcer perforation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes of peripheral blood neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet- lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients in acute stage of bronchial asthma and their clinical significance. METHODS A total of 262 patients with acute asthma, including 97 critical and 175 non-critical patients, were recruited from our hospital between January, 2013 and May, 2016, with 130 healthy individuals as the control group. The absolute neutrophil count, absolute lymphocyte count, platelet, NLR and PLR were compared among different groups, and their diagnostic values were evaluated using the area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS The absolute neutrophil count, absolute lymphocyte count, PLR and NLR (P<0.0001), but not platelet count (P=0.971), differed significantly among the 3 groups. The absolute lymphocyte count was significantly lower while the absolute neutrophil count, NLR and PLR were significantly higher in asthmatic patients in critical condition than in patients in non-critical condition and the control subjects (P<0.0001), and these parameters showed no significant differences between latter two groups (P>0.05). The areas under the curve of absolute neutrophil count, absolute lymphocyte count, NLR and PLR for the diagnosis of acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma were 0.802, 0.784, 0.873 and 0.795, respectively (all P<0.01); the optimal cut-off value of NLR was 2.58 for the diagnosis with a sensitivity of 82.8% and a specificity of 81.1%. CONCLUSIONS Peripheral blood NLR and PLR are increased in asthmatic patients, and their variations offer assistance in the diagnosis and assessment of bronchial asthma.

Abstract
The prognostic assessment of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is essential to drive its management. The search for new prognostic factors is a central issue for a more accurate estimate of short-term adverse events. Circulating neutrophils/lymphocytes ratio (NLR) has been suggested as prognostic biomarker for different cardiovascular diseases. Given the central role of inflammation, and in particular of neutrophils in the pathogenesis of VTE and its clinical history, NLR might represent a prognostic tool also in this setting. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature to assess the prognostic role of NLR in patients with acute PE. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched up to 2017, week 21. A bivariate random-effects regression approach was used to obtain summary estimate of accuracy of the high NLR adjusting for inter-study variability. Six studies for a total of 1424 patient are included. High NLR has a weighted mean sensitivity of 77% (95% CI 68-83) and a weighted mean specificity of 74% (95% CI 68-79). High NLR positive and negative predictive values are 24.4% (95% CI 20.4-28.3) and 96.7% (95% CI 95.6-97.8), respectively. The relevant impact of NLR on short-term mortality after an acute PE makes it a promising biomarker to better stratify patient prognosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients with acute pulmonary embolism(APE)who present with right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) have a worse prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the value of routine biochemical parameters in predicting RVD and 30-day mortality in patients with APE. METHODS We retrospectively collected the clinical data for 154 enrolled patients, including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), D-dimer, cardiac troponin I (cTnI), and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). We analyzed the correlation between RVD and the parameters and conducted a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to confirm the cut-off values for predicting RVD and 30-day mortality. Formulas were built with relevant parameters to predict RVD and 30-day mortality. RESULTS Age, NLR, PLR, D-dimer, the ratio of cTnI (+), and NT-proBNP (+) were significantly higher in RVD (+) patients. The ratio of cTnI (+) and NT-proBNP (+) in 30-day mortality (+) patients was significantly higher than that in 30-day mortality (-) patients. According to the logistic regression analysis, NLR, cTnI (+), and NT-proBNP (+) correlated with RVD. The formula for the RVD risk score is 0.072 × NLR+1.460 × NT-proBNP (+)+2.113 × cTnI (+), and the area under the curve (AUC) = 0.890 (95% CI: 0.839-0.941, P = .001). The formula for the 30-day mortality risk score is 0.115 × NLR + 2.046 × NT-proBNP (+) + 1.946 × cTnI (+) -0.016 × PLR, and the AUC = 0.903 (95% CI: 0.829-0.976, P = .001). CONCLUSIONS The rapid on-site evaluation of routine biochemical parameters, including NLR, cTnI, and NT-proBNP levels, and the formula developed using these parameters are valuable for predicting RVD and 30-day mortality in patients with APE.

Abstract
High platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are associated with an increased risk of arterial thrombosis, but their role in venous thromboembolism (VTE) has not been fully investigated. A case-control study, of 486 patients with VTE, 100 with cerebral vein thrombosis (CVT), and 299 healthy individuals, was carried out to investigate whether high PLR or NLR values are associated with an increased risk of VTE. Patients with high PLR or NLR did not have an increased risk of VTE (odds ratio [OR] 0.89, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.46-1.76; OR: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.34-1.39, respectively) or CVT (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 0.68-4.00; OR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.09-1.72, respectively). Subgroups analysis showed that high PLR values were associated with the risk of provoked CVT (OR: 2.65, 95% CI: 1.02-6.92), and there was an interaction with thrombophilia abnormalities (OR: 7.67, 95% CI: 1.67-35.27) in patients with CVT. In conclusion, high PLR and NLR values are not associated with an overall increased risk of VTE or CVT. High PLR values increase the risk of provoked CVT and interact with thrombophilia abnormalities in patients with CVT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) had been demonstrated as a chronic inflammation state and one of the most common complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a novel marker to reflect many kinds of chronic inflammation disease including diabetes. We aim to evaluate the association between NLR and DPN and to determine whether NLR could be a new indicator of DPN in type 2 diabetes patients. METHODS We retrospect the consecutive medical files of T2DM patients. Nerve conduction velocity (NCV), vibration perception threshold (VPT) and the data for complete blood count were recorded. Patients were divided into tertiles based on admission NLR values. Clinical parameters were firstly compared among groups. Then, logistic regression and ROC analysis were performed. RESULTS Percentages of DPN were 42.60%, 54.97% and 65.50%, in the low, middle and high tertile, respectively (n=72, 94 and 112, p<0.05). VPT values were 13.75±7.97, 15.01±9.60 and 16.78±10.92, respectively, (p<0.05). NCV in different nerves decreased with the increase of NLR (p<0.05). After adjusting potential related factors, NLR was still related to status of DPN in the logistic regression (r=1.743, p=0.001). Area under ROC was 0.619 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION The present study showed that T2DM patients with higher NLR levels might be more likely to develop peripheral neuropathy complication. NLR levels grow with the increase of NCV and VPT results. As a predictor of DPN, NLR could be used in clinical practice to help doctors understand the level of DPN progression.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil-to-monocyte ratio (NMR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and non-CD controls. These ratios were all derived from complete blood counts. Two hundred and six participants including CD inpatients and non-CD controls were retrospectively enrolled. We found statistically higher NLR and PLR and lower LMR in CD patients than in non-CD controls (all P < 0.01). However, NMR was not different between the two groups (P = 0.18). In addition, NLR, PLR, and LMR were associated with CRP and ESR. Optimal cutoffs for NLR and PLR were 2.72 (sensitivity: 68.3%, specificity: 75.9%, and overall accuracy: 70.1%) and 132.88 (sensitivity: 76.7%, specificity: 84.8%, and overall accuracy: 80.8%), respectively. In conclusion, the NLR and PLR might be effective, readily available, and low-cost biomarkers for differentiating CD patients from non-CD controls.
