Association between Plant-based Diet and Risk of Chronic Diseases and All-Cause Mortality in Centenarians in China: A Cohort Study

Background

Numerous studies have suggested the health benefits of a plant-based dietary pattern. However, whether this dietary pattern is associated with health benefits for centenarians remains unexplored. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between 16 widely consumed Chinese food items and the incidence rates of chronic diseases and all-cause mortality among centenarians.

Methods

We conducted a dietary survey on 3372 centenarians with an average age of 102.33 y in China. After rigorous screening, we identified 2675 centenarians, who underwent a 10-y follow-up study with all-cause mortality as the primary outcome. We developed 6 dietary patterns on the basis of the food consumption frequency of each participant. To model the impact of missing values, we employed multiple imputation methods, verifying the robustness of models.

Results

The overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI), healthy plant-based foods index (HPF), unhealthy plant-based foods index (uHPF), and animal-based foods index (AF) scores among centenarians in China were 46.95 ± 6.29, 44.43 ± 5.76, 51.09 ± 6.26, 21.63 ± 4.79, 9.91 ± 2.41, and 14.59 ± 3.58, respectively. High scores of PDI, hPDI, and HPF were associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases. In the 10-y follow-up study, 92.90% of centenarians have died. The high scores of the PDI (HRPDI = 0.81), hPDI (HRhPDI = 0.79), and HPF (HRHPF = 0.81) scores were significantly associated with a lower risk of death compared with the low scores. Conversely, the high AF score (HRAF = 1.17) was significantly associated with a higher risk of death compared with the low scores.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that a higher score in both a predominantly plant-based dietary pattern and a healthy dietary pattern can decrease the death among centenarians, not all HPFs have this effect. A higher AF predicted a higher risk of mortality, whereas higher PDI, hPDI, and HPF were associated with a lower risk of mortality among Chinese centenarians.

Factors associated with eating behaviors in older adults from a socioecological model perspective

BACKGROUND

The eating behaviors of older adults are associated with multiple factors. To promote older adults' healthy diets, it is imperative to comprehensively study the factors associated with the eating behaviors of the aging population group. This study aimed to probe the associated factors of older adults' eating behaviors from a socioecological model (SEM) perspective.

METHODS

In 2021, a cross-sectional survey was performed to recruit participants in China. The survey data were analyzed using a multivariate generalized linear model to identify the factors associated with eating behaviors in older adults. Standardized regression coefficients (β) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a multivariate generalized linear model.

RESULTS

The survey contained 1147 valid older adult participants. Multivariate generalized linear model results showed that older adults with older age [aged 71-80 (β = -0.61), ≥ 81 (β = -1.12)], conscientiousness personality trait (β = -0.27), and higher family health levels (β = -0.23) were inclined to have better eating behaviors. The older adults with higher education levels [junior high school and high school (β = 1.03), junior college and above (β = 1.71)], higher general self-efficacy (β = 0.09), more severe depression symptoms (β = 0.24), and employment (β = 0.82) tended to have poorer eating behaviors.

CONCLUSIONS

This study identified factors that are specifically associated with older adults' eating behaviors from an SEM perspective. The comprehensive multiple-angle perspective consideration may be a valuable idea for studying healthy eating behaviors in older adults.

Examining Physical Wellness as the Fundamental Element for Achieving Holistic Well-Being in Older Persons: Review of Literature and Practical Application in Daily Life

This review examines the impact of physical activity, nutrition, and sleep evaluations on the physical wellness (PW) and overall well-being of older individuals. A comprehensive search was conducted in databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, and EBSCO Information Services. The search spanned from January 2000 to December 2022, resulting in 19,400 articles, out of which 98 review articles met the inclusion criteria. Through the analysis of these articles, key characteristics of the literature were summarized, and opportunities to enhance the practical application of physical activity (PA), nutrition, and sleep evaluations in the daily lives of older persons were identified. Regular physical activity is crucial for older persons to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional well-being and prevent age-related health issues. Older persons have specific nutritional needs, including increased protein, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin B12 intake. Poor sleep quality in older persons is associated with negative health outcomes such as cognitive decline, physical disability, and mortality. This review emphasizes the significance of considering physical wellness as a fundamental element for achieving holistic well-being in older persons and highlights the importance of physical activity, nutrition, and sleep evaluations in improving their overall health and well-being. By understanding and implementing these findings, we can enhance the quality of life and promote healthy aging in older persons.

Prospective Study of Diet Quality and the Risk of Dementia in the Oldest Old

This study examined the associations between overall diet quality and the risk of dementia in a rural cohort among the oldest old. Included in this prospective cohort study were 2232 participants aged ≥ 80 years and dementia-free at the baseline according to the Geisinger Rural Aging Study (GRAS), a longitudinal cohort in rural Pennsylvania. In 2009, diet quality was assessed by a validated dietary screening tool (DST). Incident cases of dementia during 2009-2021 were identified using diagnosis codes. This approach was validated by a review of electronic health records. Associations between diet quality scores and the incidence of dementia were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for potential confounders. Across a mean of 6.90 years of follow-up, we identified 408 incident cases of all-cause dementia. Having a higher diet quality was not significantly associated with a lower risk for incidents of all-cause dementia (adjusted HR for the highest compared with the lowest tertile: 1.01, 95% CI: 0.79, 1.29, P-trend = 0.95). Similarly, we did not observe a significant association between diet quality and altered risks of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Overall, having a higher diet quality was not significantly associated with a lower risk of dementia among the oldest old during the full follow-up.

Correlates of Meal Skipping in Community Dwelling Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

In this cross-sectional analysis of 10,071 community dwelling adults aged ≥70 years, we examined factors associated with meal skipping (self-reported) using multivariable logistic regression. Prevalence of meal skipping in this study was 19.5%. The adjusted odds (aOR [95%CI]) of meal skipping were lower in those 85+ years (vs. 70-74.9 years, 0.56 [0.45-0.70]), and in those in regional areas (vs. urban area, 0.81 [0.72-0.92]). Higher odds of meal skipping were observed for those living alone (vs. living with someone, 1.84 [1.64-2.05]), current smokers (vs. non-smokers, 2.07 [1.54-2.80]), consumers of high amounts of alcohol (vs. abstainers 1.93 [1.35-2.75]), those with poor oral health (vs. excellent oral health, 1.71 [1.07 -2.73]) diabetes (vs. not 1.26 [1.06-1.50]), or frailty (vs. not, 1.63 [1.09-2.43]). This study identified socio-demographic, social, behavioural and biomedical correlates of meal skipping in later life, which may assist in targeting interventions to address meal skipping.

Dietary-Physical Activity Patterns in the Health Context of Older Polish Adults: The 'ABC of Healthy Eating' Project

The study aimed to analyze the dietary–physical activity patterns (D-PAPs) in the health context of Polish people aged 60+ years. A total of 418 respondents across Poland were recruited; however, the final analysis included 361 women and men aged 60–89 years old. D-PAPs were derived using a principal component analysis (PCA); input variables were the frequency of consumption of 10 food groups and physical activity. Finally, three D-PAPs were identified: ‘Pro-healthy eating and more-active’, ‘Sweets, fried foods and sweetened beverages’, and ‘Juices, fish and sweetened beverages’. We developed the Functional Limitations Score (FLS) using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA^®). A logistic regression was applied to verify the association between the D-PAPs and health-condition outcomes. Older adults were more likely to adhere to the upper tertile of the ‘Pro-healthy eating and more-active’ pattern, with good/better self-reported health status in comparison with their peers (OR = 1.86) or with good/very good self-assessed appetite (OR = 2.56), while this was less likely for older adults with malnutrition risk (OR = 0.37) or with a decrease in food intake (OR = 0.46). Subjects with a decrease in food intake (OR = 0.43), who declared a recent weight loss (OR = 0.49), or older adults in the upper tertile of the FLS (OR = 0.34) were less likely to adhere to the upper tertile of the ‘Sweets, fried foods and sweetened beverages’ pattern. The decrease in food intake due to a loss of appetite or chewing or swallowing difficulties was inversely associated with the ‘Pro-healthy eating and more-active’ pattern characterized by a relatively high frequency of consumption of vegetables, fruit, water, dairy, and grains and a high physical activity. In the interest of the good nutritional status and health of older adults, special attention should be paid to removing limitations in meal consumption, including improved appetite.

The Effects of “Diet–Smoking–Gender” Three-Way Interactions on Cognitive Impairment among Chinese Older Adults

Investigations on gender variations in the risk factors of cognitive impairment are required to promote future precision medicine among older adults, as well as to contribute to a better understanding of the “male–female health-survival paradox”. With this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of “diet–smoking–gender” three-way interactions on cognitive impairments among Chinese older adults. We conducted a 16-year prospective cohort study among 15,953, 15,555, 16,849, 9716, 7116, and 13,165 older adults from the 2002, 2005, 2008–2009, 2011–2012, 2014, and 2017–2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), respectively. Cognitive impairment was measured by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The dietary diversity score (DDS) was calculated using the CLHLS food frequency questionnaire. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to assess the “diet–smoking–gender” three-way interaction effects on cognitive impairment across the six waves of CLHLS. We found that higher dietary diversity was associated with lower probability of cognitive impairment among older adults (OR = 0.92; 95%CI = 0.90, 0.98). However, smoking behavior may negatively influence the protective effect of higher dietary diversity on cognitive function among females (OR = 1.26; 95%CI = 1.07, 1.49). Our findings imply that we should take gender differences and lifestyle behaviors into consideration in implementing dietary interventions to improve cognitive function among older adults.

Food Patterns of Hospitalized Patients with Heart Failure and Their Relationship with Demographic, Economic and Clinical Factors in Sergipe, Brazil

Background: The high rates of hospitalization and mortality caused by Heart Failure (HF) have attracted the attention of health sectors around the world. Dietary patterns that involve food combinations and preparations with synergistic or antagonistic effects of different dietary components can influence the worsening and negative outcomes of this disease. Objectives: To describe the dietary patterns of patients hospitalized for HF decompensation and associate them with demographic, economic, and clinical factors, and the type of care provided in Sergipe. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study that is part of the Congestive Heart Failure Registry (VICTIM-CHF)” of Aracaju/SE. Prospective data collection took place with all patients hospitalized between April 2018 and February 2021 in cardiology referral hospitals, 2 public and 1 private. The data collected were sociodemographic, clinical, lifestyle, anthropometric and food consumption variables. Daily dietary intake was estimated by applying a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The extraction of dietary patterns, by exploratory factor analysis, was performed after grouping the foods according to the nutritional value and form of preparation into 34 groups. To assess the association between the factorial scores for adherence to the standards and the variables studied, the Mann-Whitney U test was applied. Linear regressions were also performed, considering the dietary pattern (one for each pattern) as a dependent variable. Results: The study included 240 patients hospitalized for HF decompensation, most of them elderly (mean age 61.12 ± 1.06 years), male (52.08%) and attended by the Unified Health System—SUS (67.5%). Three dietary patterns were identified, labeled “traditional” (typical foods of the Brazilian northeastern population added to ultra-processed foods), “Mediterranean” (foods recommended by the Mediterranean diet) and “dual” (healthy foods combined with fast and easy-to-prepare foods like snacks, bread, sweets and desserts). Adherence to the “traditional” pattern was greater among men (p < 0.031) and non-diabetics (p < 0.003). The “Mediterranean” was more consumed by the elderly (p < 0.001), with partners (p = 0.001) and a lower income (p < 0.001), assisted by the SUS (p < 0.001) and without hypertension (p = 0,04). The “dual” diet pattern had greater adherence by the elderly (p < 0.001), self-declared non-black (p = 0.012), with higher income (p < 0.001), assisted in the private sector (p < 0.001) and with less impaired functional capacity (p = 0.037). It was also observed that being female (p = 0.031) and being older reduced the average scores of performing the “traditional” pattern (p = 0.002). Regarding the type of service, being from the public service reduced the average scores for adhering to the “dual” pattern (p = 0.008). Conclusions: Three dietary patterns representative of the population were found, called traditional, Mediterranean and dual, which were associated with demographic, economic and clinical factors. Thus, these standards must be considered in the development of nutritional strategies and recommendations in order to increase adherence to diets that are more protective against cardiovascular diseases.

Socioeconomic, Eating- and Health-Related Limitations of Food Consumption among Polish Women 60+ Years: The 'ABC of Healthy Eating' Project

The study aimed at identifying the socioeconomic, eating- and health-related limitations and their associations with food consumption among Polish women 60+ years old. Data on the frequency of consumption of fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, poultry, fish, legumes, eggs, water and beverages industrially unsweetened were collected with the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA^®) and were expressed in the number of servings consumed per day or week. Three indexes: the Socioeconomic Status Index (SESI), the Eating-related Limitations Score (E-LS) and the Health-related Limitations Score (H-LS) were developed and applied. SESI was created on the base of two variables: place of residence and the self-reported economic situation of household. E-LS included: difficulties with self-feeding, decrease in food intake due to digestive problems, chewing or swallowing difficulties, loss of appetite, decrease in the feeling the taste of food, and feeling satiety, whereas H-LS included: physical function, comorbidity, cognitive function, psychological stress and selected anthropometric measurements. A logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the socioeconomic, eating-, and health-related limitations of food consumption. Lower socioeconomic status (vs. higher) was associated with a lower chance of consuming fruit/vegetables ≥ 2 servings/day (OR = 0.25) or consuming dairy ≥ 1 serving/day (OR = 0.32). The existence of multiple E-LS limitations (vs. few) was associated with a lower chance of consuming fruit/vegetables ≥ 2 servings/day (OR = 0.72), consuming dairy ≥ 1 serving/day (OR = 0.55) or consuming water and beverages industrially unsweetened ≥6 cups/day (OR = 0.56). The existence of multiple H-LS limitations was associated with a lower chance of consuming fruit/vegetables ≥ 2 servings/day (OR = 0.79 per 1 H-LS point increase) or consuming dairy ≥ 1 serving/day (OR = 0.80 per 1 H-LS point increase). Limitations found in the studied women were related to insufficient consumption of selected groups of food, which can lead to malnutrition and dehydration. There is a need for food policy actions, including practical educational activities, to eliminate barriers in food consumption, and in turn to improve the nutritional and health status of older women.

Differences in Dietary Patterns among the Polish Elderly: A Challenge for Public Health

The aim of the study was to assess the diversity of dietary patterns within the elderly, in relation to the region of residence, household structure, and socioeconomic status. The questionnaire was conducted in a group of 427 Polish adults aged 60 and older from June to September 2019. The sample was selected by means of the snowball method in two regions. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to extract and identify three dietary patterns (factors) from the frequency of eating 32 groups of foods. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the identified dietary patterns (DPs), region, household status, and socioeconomic index (SES). Adherence to the identified DPs, i.e., traditional, prudent, and adverse, was associated with socioeconomic status (SES) and living environment, i.e., living alone, with partner, or with family, while the region did not differentiate them. Less people living with their family were characterized by the frequent consumption of traditional food (the upper tertile of this DP), while more of them often consumed food that was typical for both prudent and adverse DPs (the upper tertiles of these DPs). The presence of a partner when living with family did not differentiate the adherence to DPs. A high SES decreased the chances of adhering to the upper tertiles of the “prudent” and “traditional” DPs, while living with family increased the chances of adhering to both the upper and middle tertiles of the “prudent” DP. Identifying the dietary patterns of the elderly contributes to a better understanding of the food intake of the senior citizens living in different social situations, in order to support public policies and nutritional counseling among this age group.

Dietary Habits of Older Adults in Serbia: Findings From the National Health Survey

Objectives: Adults aged 65 years and older comprise one fifth of the Serbian population. Many of them have multiple, often diet-related comorbidities. We aimed to investigate their dietary habits by comparing them with younger adults' and to determine the relation of the differing ones to demographic, socioeconomic and health factors. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of 2013 Serbian National Health Survey data on 14,082 adults. Binary logistic regression was used to determine dietary habits associated with older age (≥65 years) compared to younger age (18-64 years) and to assess their independent predictors in older adults. Results: Older adults more often reported everyday breakfast (OR = 2.085, 95%CI = 1.622-2.680) and brown/wholegrain bread consumption (OR = 1.681, 95% CI = 1.537-1.839), while using margarine (OR = 0.578, 95%CI = 0.397-0.839), discretionary salt (sometimes: OR = 0.648, 95%CI = 0.596-0.705, almost always: OR = 0.522, 95%CI = 0.445-0.614) and consuming fish (two or more times a week: OR = 0.465, 95%CI = 0.383-0.566) less frequently than younger adults. This was mainly positively related to urban environment, affluence, higher education and poor health. Conclusion: Using nationally representative data, we found that older adults reported healthier dietary habits compared to younger adults, which requires timely public health action.

Decline in independence after three years and its association with dietary patterns and IADL-related factors in community-dwelling older people: an analysis by age stage and sex

Background

Few studies have shown age stage and sex differences in the association among dietary patterns and various health factors related to disability in older people. This study aimed to reveal the differences of characteristics, including several dietary patterns, associated with a decline in independence over 3 years in community-dwelling independent older people. Specifically, we examined data by age stage, for people between 65 and 75 years (earlier-stage) and people aged 75 years or above (later-stage), and sex.

Methods

We conducted a nationwide longitudinal study of 25 Japanese prefectures from 2013 to 2016; 2250 participants’ complete data (1294 men and 956 women) were analyzed. Independence was evaluated based on instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scores (maximum = 12). Dietary patterns were derived from a principal component analysis of the seven food groups. Baseline IADL-related factors linked to independence 3 years later were selected. Multiple logistic regression analysis for having low independence—without a full score of IADL 3 years after baseline—was conducted, adjusted for baseline IADL scores. Finally, to compare differences among age stage and sex groups, we used Multiple-Group Path Analysis.

Results

Participants with a full IADL score 3 years later were classified as high independence (69.6%), and those without the full score were classified as low independence (30.4%). Only the later-stage older peoples’ proportion of low independence 3 years later was significantly higher than those at baseline. A high meat frequency pattern was associated with a significantly higher risk of decline in independence 3 years later in later-stage older women. The earlier-stage older people showed that 18.5 ≤ BMI < 25 was associated with a lower risk, referring to BMI < 18.5. In the later-stage, exercising three or more times a week with enjoyment and fulfillment was associated with a significantly lower risk.

Conclusions

The IADL disability in older people aged 75 and over showed a rapid change. The different characteristics associated with the risk of decline in independence among age stage and sex were revealed. Targeting age stage and sex separately for community-based comprehensive supportive strategies would be necessary for a long life globally.

The role of diet on the risk of dementia in the oldest old: The Monzino 80-plus population-based study

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Longevity also carries its dark side of age-related chronic diseases, dementia being one of the worst and the most prevalent. Since dementia lacks effective treatments, preventing or delaying it is highly desirable. Dietary habits and nutrition have been found to be important modifiable risk factors for many chronic diseases, but evidence on the role of diet on the risk of dementia is still limited, particularly among the very old. Aim of the present work is to study the association of the Mediterranean diet and its components with prevalent and incident dementia in the oldest-old.

METHODS

We analyzed data from the Monzino 80-plus study, a population-based study in subjects 80 years or older in the Varese province, Italy. A validated food frequency questionnaire was used to collect information on 23 different foods consumed in the previous year. A Mediterranean diet score was calculated and its components were classified into tertiles. Multivariable models for dementia prevalence and incidence were adjusted for demographic and clinical characteristics.

RESULTS

Information on nutrition was available for 1390 subjects in the cross-sectional study and 512 subjects in the longitudinal study, mean respective ages 93 and 92. Greater adherence to Mediterranean diet, greater consumption of eggs, fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, and greater food intake were associated with a lower prevalence of dementia. Increasing number of portions per week and consumption of legumes significantly decreased the incidence of dementia during the 3.6 year mean follow-up: corresponding hazard ratios of highest vs. lowest tertiles (95% confidence intervals) were 0.66 (0.46-0.95) and 0.68 (0.47-0.97), respectively.

CONCLUSION

Oldest-old eating less and having diets with less variety and nutrient density were more frequent among subjects with dementia. The longitudinal analysis confirmed oldest-old subjects who eat more portions, as well as those who have a higher intake of legumes, are at decreased risk of developing dementia even though reverse causality cannot be completely ruled out.

Association between dietary diversity and cognitive impairment among the oldest-old: Findings from a nationwide cohort study

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Dietary diversity is widely recommended in national and international guidelines; however, whether the beneficial effects on cognitive function still apply in the oldest-old (80+) has rarely been studied. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of dietary diversity with cognitive function among the oldest-old in a large prospective cohort in China.

METHODS

We conducted a long-term prospective analysis on 11,970 participants aged 80+ (6581 octogenarians, 3730 nonagenarians, and 1659 centenarians). We constructed the baseline dietary diversity score (DDS) based on eight food items of a food frequency questionnaire. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) was used to classify the participants as having cognitive impairment or not and was also used as a continuous metric. Non-linear associations of DDS with cognitive impairment was evaluated by cox models with penalized splines. We used mixed-effect models for longitudinal data with repeated measurements of MMSE (for up to seven time during the follow-up between 1998 and 2014).

RESULTS

We documented 4778 cognitive impairment during 46,738 person-years of follow-up. Each one unit increase in DDS was associated with a 4% lower risk of cognitive impairment (adjusted hazard ratio (HR): 0.96; 95% confidential interval (CI): 0.94-0.98). Compared to participants with DDS of 0 score, those with a DDS of 1-2, 3-4, and higher than 5 scores had a lower cognitive impairment risk, the HRs were 0.86 (0.79-0.95), 0.82 (0.74-0.91), and 0.72 (0.64-0.82) respectively, and a significant trend emerged (p < 0.001). Compared with DDS of zero score, a DDS of 1-2,3-4, ≥5 was related to slower MMSE decline (β = 0.128, 0.162, 0.301, respectively, p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Even after the age of 80, dietary diversity may offer a simple and straightforward mean of identifying and screening individuals at high risk for cognitive impairment. Recommendation of dietary diversity may be advocated to attenuate cognitive decline and decrease the risk of cognitive impairment in the oldest-old, especially in a low income or middle-income countries.

Aged Monkeys Fed a High-Fat/High-Sugar Diet Recapitulate Metabolic Disorders and Cardiac Contractile Dysfunction

Aged nonhuman primate (NHP) models are of great value for studying the pathology of metabolic heart diseases and developing therapeutic strategies. In this study, aged male cynomolgus monkeys were fed a regular diet or a high-fat/high-sugar diet (HFSD) for 8 months. Metabolic disorders were diagnosed by ¹H-NMR and serum biochemistry, and cardiac function was evaluated by echocardiography. Our results showed that serum metabolic profiles were altered in aged monkeys fed a HFSD, in line with aortic tissue damage, cardiac remodeling, and contractile dysfunction. This aged monkey model significantly increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines and altered expression and phosphorylation of intracellular signaling proteins in the heart, as compared to aged monkeys on a regular diet. Furthermore, the animals demonstrated increased phosphorylation of cardiac myofilament proteins which are causatively associated with decreased myofilament contractility. We conclude that the aged monkey model fed a HFSD exhibits metabolic disorders and cardiac contractile dysfunction.

The Effect of Healthy Diet on Cognitive Performance Among Healthy Seniors - A Mini Review

At present, a healthy diet appears to be one of the suitable strategies in slowing down cognitive decline in the process of aging. A number of evidence-based studies confirm its efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness. The aim of this mini review is to evaluate and describe recent randomized clinical and cohort studies exploring the effect of healthy diet on cognitive performance among healthy seniors, as well as to update the existing information on this research issue. For these reasons, the authors reviewed full-text, peer-reviewed journal articles written in English and available in Web of Science and PubMed between September 2017 and February 2020. Altogether nine original studies were detected. The results indicate that healthy diet and healthy diet components generally have a positive impact on the enhancement of cognitive functions. Furthermore, the findings reveal that dietary patterns, as well as single nutrients might have a significant effect on specific cognitive domains, such as memory in general, episodic memory, or processing speed. It also seems that a strict adherence to the dietary patterns and a higher diet variety have a more significant effect on the improvement of cognitive functions. Nevertheless, there seem to be gender differences in dietary behavior. More recently, personalized dietary interventions started to be used in delaying cognitive decline among healthy seniors. Therefore, more randomized control trials or N-of-1 trials should be performed in this research area in order to detect the most suitable dietary pattern or nutrients, which would, together with other modifiable lifestyle factors, contribute to the improvement of quality of life of the aging population.

Padrão alimentar de idosos longevos não frágeis e sua relação com baixo peso, massa, força muscular e teste de velocidade de marcha

Resumo Objetivos Identificar o padrão alimentar de idosos longevos não frágeis e avaliar a associação desse padrão a composição corporal, força muscular e teste de velocidade de marcha. Métodos Estudo transversal com uma amostra de 96 idosos com idade ≥80 anos, não frágeis. O consumo alimentar foi analisado por meio de três registros alimentares não consecutivos e a massa muscular por meio da área muscular do braço. A força muscular foi medida por dinamometria. A análise de Cluster foi utilizada para distinguir os padrões alimentares. Realizou-se a análise bivariada e a Regressão de Poisson multivariado, explorando a relação dos padrões alimentares com as variáveis independentes específicas. Resultados Foram identificados dois padrões alimentares, rotulados de padrão saudável e padrão tradicional. A prevalência de baixo peso nos idosos do padrão tradicional foi 10% (IC95% 1,01-1,20) maior do que nos idosos do padrão saudável e está prevalência praticamente manteve-se (RP 1,09; IC 1,00-1,18) no modelo ajustado por funcionalidade. Quanto a classificação da área muscular do braço os idosos do padrão tradicional apresentaram 15% (IC95% 1,00-1,32) maior prevalência de baixa massa muscular, quando comparada com os idosos do padrão saudável. Essa prevalência no modelo ajustado por funcionalidade, deixou de ser estatisticamente significativa. Não foi encontrada associação do padrão alimentar com força muscular e teste de velocidade de marcha. Conclusões Os achados demonstraram que os idosos adeptos ao padrão alimentar saudável tem menor risco de baixo peso e que a baixa massa muscular está provavelmente mais associada a funcionalidade do que ao padrão alimentar.
