Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind, dating back to ancient Egypt. The disease is a chronic metabolic disorder that heavily burdens healthcare providers worldwide due to the steady increment of patients yearly. Worryingly, diabetes affects not only the aging population but also children. It is prevalent to control this problem, as diabetes can lead to many health complications. As evolution happens, humankind starts integrating computer technology with the healthcare system. The utilization of artificial intelligence assists healthcare to be more efficient in diagnosing diabetes patients, better healthcare delivery, and more patient eccentric. Among the advanced data mining techniques in artificial intelligence, stacking is among the most prominent methods applied in the diabetes domain. Hence, this study opts to investigate the potential of stacking ensembles. The aim of this study is to reduce the high complexity inherent in stacking, as this problem contributes to longer training time and reduces the outliers in the diabetes data to improve the classification performance. In addressing this concern, a novel machine learning method called the Stacking Recursive Feature Elimination-Isolation Forest was introduced for diabetes prediction. The application of stacking with Recursive Feature Elimination is to design an efficient model for diabetes diagnosis while using fewer features as resources. This method also incorporates the utilization of Isolation Forest as an outlier removal method. The study uses accuracy, precision, recall, F1 measure, training time, and standard deviation metrics to identify the classification performances. The proposed method acquired an accuracy of 79.077% for PIMA Indians Diabetes and 97.446% for the Diabetes Prediction dataset, outperforming many existing methods and demonstrating effectiveness in the diabetes domain.

Abstract
Glycated albumin (GA) reflects glycemic status for the past three weeks. GA level demonstrates a strong correlation with HbA1c level and is used as an adjunctive biomarker for diagnosis and monitoring of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this study, we validated the predictive performance of baseline GA for development of T2DM in healthy individuals in Korea. From August 2013 to September 2014, the medical records of 3,771 healthy Koreans were retrospectively reviewed. Each participant was categorized into tertiles based on initial GA level. During the follow-up period through May 2020, study participants were evaluated for T2DM using HbA1c, fasting glucose level, and a self-reported diagnosis history. Baseline GA level by tertile (T1 to T3) was 10.4 ± 0.8% (mean ± SD), 12.1 ± 0.3%, and 13.7 ± 0.9%, respectively. The median follow-up was 5.97 years, during which 4.9% (186 of 3,771) of the participants developed T2DM. After adjusting for confounding factors, the hazard ratio for the development of T2DM in the highest GA level group (T3) compared to the reference group (T1) was 2.46 (95% CI, 1.7 to 3.58, p < 0.001 for trend) with a Harrell's C index of 0.80 (95% CI, 0.76 to 0.83). Also, within highest group of baseline HbA1c and FG levels, higher GA levels were associated with an increased HRs for T2DM. In conclusion, Our study confirms that the risk of T2DM increases with baseline GA level. Additional follow-up of the cohort is warranted to investigate the correlations between GA and other clinical indicators including diabetic complications.

Abstract
Diabetes self-management education helps to improve health outcomes and qualities of life for diabetic patients. This systematic review examines the effectiveness of several types of diabetes self-management education for patients at the early stages of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A review of studies that have researched the use and impacts of health education on diabetic patients with T2DM was conducted using the electronic databases PubMed, Elsevier, JSTORE, Walters Kluwer, and the Cochrane Library between January 2017 and November 2022. We found 789 studies, and after selecting the PRISMA flowchart, we selected 19 studies, including those of 2512 adult patients diagnosed with T2DM. Biomedical results presented the pooled effect of a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of -0.64% and a fasting blood glucose (FBG) of -0.32. Emotional and social results and behavioral effects were evaluated in 10 and nine studies, respectively. The education and support of diabetic patients at the early stages of the disease impact various aspects, including the biomedical profile, lifestyle, emotional and social well-being, and anthropometric parameters. Among the factors that have been identified to enhance the effectiveness of educational interventions are the following: conducting individualized sessions (or at least in small groups of patients), extending the duration of interventions by at least 12 months, adopting a combined approach that includes both face-to-face and online components, and ensuring the involvement of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Abstract
Continuous detection of sudden changes in blood glucose is essential for individuals with diabetes who have difficulty in maintaining optimal control of their blood glucose levels. Hypoglycemic shock or a hyperglycemic crisis are likely to occurs in patients with diabetes and poses a significant threat to their lives. Currently, commercial continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has limits in the glucose concentration detection range, which is 40-500 mg/dL, making it difficult to prevent the risk of hyperglycemic shock. In addition, current CGMs are invasive, cause pain and irritation during usage, and expensive. In this research, we overcome these limitations by introducing a novel mechanism to detect glucose concentration using supercapacitors. The developed CGM, which is self-powered and minimally invasive due to the use of microneedles, can detect a wider range of glucose concentrations than commercial sensors. In addition, efficacy and stability were proven through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Thus, this self-powered, microneedle and supercapacitive-type CGM can potentially prevent both hypoglycemic and complications of hyperglycemia without pain and with less power consumption than current commercial sensors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of diabetes type on Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates following cataract surgery. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study. METHODS All patients who underwent cataract extraction at the Department of Ophthalmology, Bristol Eye Hospital, Bristol, UK, between 2003 and 2017 were included. The Nd:YAG capsulotomy rate following cataract surgery was assessed and compared between nondiabetic, type 1 diabetes (T1D), and type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients. Multivariate Cox regression analysis controlling for age and sex was used to estimate hazard ratios for Nd:YAG laser capsulotomies. RESULTS Included were 53,471 consecutive cataract surgeries. Overall, 42,651 eyes (79.8%) were in nondiabetic patients, 823 eyes (1.5%) were in T1D patients, and 9,997 eyes (18.7%) were in T2D patients. The mean follow-up time was 6.8 ± 4.2 years. In univariate analysis, the eyes of T1D patients (p < 0.001) and T2D patients (p = 0.003) had significantly higher Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rates than the eyes of nondiabetic patients. In Cox regression analysis adjusted for the patient's age and sex, DM1 (HR 1.692, 95%CI 1.390-2.059, P<0.001) and DM2 (HR 1.157, 95%CI 1.075-1.244, P<0.001) remained significantly predictive for higher Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy rates. CONCLUSION In our large cohort study, patients with T1D and T2D were predisposed to high risk for Nd:YAG capsulotomy following cataract surgery. This study may be beneficial and raise awareness regarding the assessment of posterior capsular opacification development in pseudophakic diabetic patients, particularly those with T1D. The significance of ophthalmology screening for diabetes individuals is further supported by this issue.

Abstract
Aruncus spp. has been used as a traditional folk medicine worldwide for its anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and detoxifying properties. The well-known species A. dioicus var. kamtschaticus has long been used for multifunctional purposes in Eastern Asia. Recently, it was reported that its extract has antioxidant and anti-diabetic effects. In this respect, it is likely that other Aruncus spp. possess various biological activities; however, little research has been conducted thus far. The present study aims to biologically identify active compounds against diabetes in the Korean endemic plant A. aethusifolius and evaluate the underlying mechanisms. A. aethusifolius extract enhanced glucose uptake without toxicity to C2C12 cells. A bioassay-guided isolation of A. aethusifolius yielded two pure compounds, and their structures were characterized as glycolipid derivatives, gingerglycolipid A, and (2S)-3-linolenoylglycerol-O-β-d-galactopyranoside by an interpretation of nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution mass spectrometric data. Both compounds showed glucose uptake activity, and both compounds increased the phosphorylation levels of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) and 5'-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and protein expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ). Gingerglycolipid A docked computationally into the active site of IRS-1, AMPK1, AMPK2, and PPARγ (-5.8, -6.9, -6.8, and -6.8 kcal/mol).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, the cases of type 2 diabetes are increasing, and this is largely attributed to lifestyle changes. Though diabetes is primarily a metabolic disease determined by biological factors, psychosocial aspects play a crucial role in its progression and management. However, the literature on psychosocial dimensions of diabetes management is minuscule and scattered. OBJECTIVE This synthesis sought to understand the psychosocial facilitators and barriers to type 2 diabetes management and coping among adults. METHODS We have adopted a meta-synthesis to review available qualitative studies using Pub- Med and Scopus databases. Based on inclusion criteria, we have chosen 24 studies published between 2010 and 2023. We have considered studies across countries, among which 63% of the studies included were from Western countries, and most have employed qualitative descriptive design. The selected studies were analyzed thematically using a deductive framework. RESULTS Six themes emerged as the psychosocial barriers and facilitators of managing and coping with type 2 diabetes: 1) cognitive-emotional factors, 2) faith, 3) constraints to behavioural change, 4) social constraints and support, 5) healthcare provider-patient relationship, and 6) awareness. Further, a conceptual framework was developed from the synthesis. CONCLUSION The patients' experiences evident from this synthesis signify the crucial role of psychosocial factors in diabetes management and coping. This evidence emphasizes the need for integrated care so that psychosocial aspects are addressed by healthcare providers and behavioural health professionals, which may lead to the promotion of facilitators and the minimization of barriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to extend on our previous research by exploring patient-perceived factors that lead to their Lower Extremity Amputations (LEA). LEA are a serious complication of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), LEA are thought to be preventable with early detection and management of risk factors. Our previous study identified that these factors extend beyond the typical biological and modifiable risk factors and may also extend to patient awareness and competing priorities. Therefore, this research explored these issues in further detail, identifying patient-perceived factors that lead to their LEA. METHODS A qualitative descriptive methodology involving non-probability purposive sampling was used to recruit inpatients at a tertiary metropolitan hospital in South Australia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were transcribed verbatim. Data from the interviews were analysed using thematic analysis and the constant comparison approach. RESULTS A total of 15 participants shared their perspectives of risk factors for LEA. Two main themes emerged: intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors identified in this study included identity, ambivalence, denial, inevitability, and helplessness. Extrinsic factors related to resources, rapport with healthcare professionals, and management of care. CONCLUSIONS Through identifying that a combination of perceived personal attributes (intrinsic) and system-level (extrinsic) factors likely contribute to LEA, this study highlights the complexity of factors that contribute to patients' perceptions of what led to their diabetes related LEA. These findings support the importance of a nuanced approach in managing patients with diabetes who are at risk of LEA as it's likely patients' personal circumstances, day-to-day life's requirements and responsibilities, their interaction with healthcare professionals all seemingly contribute to how risks are viewed and managed. Tackling this challenge will require reimagining diabetes care, acknowledgement of risk factors beyond the obvious and addressing persistent access and workforce issues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The level of fasting blood glucose (FBG) is influenced by several factors, including health status, genetics, and diet. Some studies have reported a beneficial effect of Ramadan Intermittent Fasting (RIF) on diabetic patients. However, clinical observations have shown that diabetes is exacerbated in some patients. AIM This study aims to investigate the influence of RIF on the FBG level, a biomarker of hyperglycemia and diabetes, and to identify factors associated with variations in FBG levels during RIF among diabetic patients. METHODS This study is a cross-sectional study. We monitored the FBG levels of 181 type II diabetic patients over a two-month period, from 20 February to 20 April 2023, which represents the Islamic lunar months of Shaban (8th month) and Ramadan (9th month). Ramadan provides a prominent month of intermittent fasting practice for studying its physiological effects on diabetes. We collected clinical data from each participant, including demographic information, co-morbidities, and medications used during this period. RESULTS Based on our findings, diabetic patients were classified into three groups depending on the influence of RIF on FBG levels: the positively affected group (44%), whose average FBG levels were reduced; the neutrally affected group (24%), whose average FBG levels did not change; and the negatively affected group (32%), whose average FBG levels increased during the fasting month of Ramadan compared to the previous month. Furthermore, we found that the positive effect of RIF was more frequent among obese, non-geriatric, and male diabetic patients, while the negative effect of RIF was more frequent among patients who were not adhering to the medication. CONCLUSIONS This study concludes that RIF affects FBG levels differently among diabetic patients. These findings should be taken into consideration when treating diabetic patients during the fasting month of Ramadan, and further studies are needed to identify (1) factors associated with inter-individual variation in the response to RIF and (2) those who are great candidates for RIF.

Abstract
Numerous complications of type 1 diabetes (T1D) may be prevented through suitable glycemic control. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) may be one of the markers for the early detection of the metabolic imbalance characteristic of the disease. However, optimal control of diabetes is not achieved in a large group of patients. It was demonstrated that numerous factors (sociodemographic, psychological, and clinical) contributed to this condition. The aim of the study was to identify factors influencing the control of diabetes measured via glycated hemoglobin concentrations in people with T1D. Independent factors influencing better diabetes control measured via HbA1c in the study group included higher disease acceptance, higher nutritional adherence, lower BMI, and a lower risk of eating disorders. Describing the determinants will allow for the improvement of the system of care provided to people with T1D and for it to comprise important psychological variables related to self-care and acceptance of the disease.

Abstract
The diabetes-associated mortality rate is increasing annually, along with the severity of its accompanying disorders that impair human health. Worldwide, several medicinal plants are frequently urged for the management of diabetes. Reports are available on the use of medicinal plants by traditional healers for their blood-sugar-lowering effects, along with scientific evidence to support such claims. The Asteraceae family is one of the most diverse flowering plants, with about 1,690 genera and 32,000 species. Since ancient times, people have consumed various herbs of the Asteraceae family as food and employed them as medicine. Despite the wide variety of members within the family, most of them are rich in naturally occurring polysaccharides that possess potent prebiotic effects, which trigger their use as potential nutraceuticals. This review provides detailed information on the reported Asteraceae plants traditionally used as antidiabetic agents, with a major focus on the plants of this family that are known to exert antioxidant, hepatoprotective, vasodilation, and wound healing effects, which further action for the prevention of major diseases like cardiovascular disease (CVD), liver cirrhosis, and diabetes mellitus (DM). Moreover, this review highlights the potential of Asteraceae plants to counteract diabetic conditions when used as food and nutraceuticals. The information documented in this review article can serve as a pioneer for developing research initiatives directed at the exploration of Asteraceae and, at the forefront, the development of a botanical drug for the treatment of DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a common complication among men living with diabetes (MLWD), which adds to stresses induced by medical condition. Effect of stress on their daily living activities has been only poorly described. AIM This study aimed to explore the behaviour and challenges of MLWD experiencing SD in respect of daily living activities. SETTING Five clinics in Senwabarwana in Limpopo province. METHODS Qualitative approach and phenomenological exploratory design were adopted to collect data from 15 male participants selected from five clinics using purposive homogeneous sampling. One-on-one interviews were conducted using voice recorders, and field notes were taken of non-verbal cues. Unstructured interview guide with principal question enabled instructive probing to be conducted. Data were analysed using eight steps of Tesch's inductive, descriptive and open coding technique. RESULTS Participants reported stressful experiences, difficulty coping with diabetes and its accompanying complication of SD that led to fear of losing their wives. They indicated that as a result of stress and difficulty in coping with the condition, they were engaged in less physical activity than before their diagnosis. CONCLUSION Sexual dysfunction is prevalent among male diabetics and often feel stressed and worried about losing their wives. They struggle to cope with conditions to the point where they are less capable of performing tasks than they were before diagnosis. These outcomes are critical issues that should be addressed in any diabetes treatment strategy.Contribution: Support-based collaboration of healthcare providers with spouses and revision of South African diabetes management strategy to incorporate healthy coping strategies are recommended.

Abstract
Preclinical biomedical models are a fundamental tool to improve the knowledge and management of diseases, particularly in diabetes mellitus (DM) since, currently, the pathophysiological and molecular mechanisms involved in its development are not fully clarified, and there is no treatment to cure DM. This review will focus on the features, advantages and limitations of some of the most used DM models in rats, such as the spontaneous models: Bio-Breeding Diabetes-Prone (BB-DP) and LEW.1AR1-iddm, as representative models of type 1 DM (DM-1); the Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) and Goto-kakizaki (GK) rats, as representative models of type 2 DM (DM-2); and other models induced by surgical, dietary and pharmacological-alloxan and streptozotocin-procedures. Given the variety of DM models in rats, as well as the non-uniformity in the protocols and the absence of all the manifestation of the long-term multifactorial complications of DM in humans, the researchers must choose the one that best suits the final objectives of the study. These circumstances, added to the fact that most of the experimental research in the literature is focused on the study of the early phase of DM, makes it necessary to develop long-term studies closer to DM in humans. In this review, a recently published rat DM model induced by streptozotocin injection with chronic exogenous administration of insulin to reduce hyperglycaemia has also been included in an attempt to mimic the chronic phase of DM in humans.

Abstract
Metformin, the most frequently prescribed medicine for the management of type 2 diabetes, has been shown to reduce cardiovascular events in diabetic patients in pre-clinical and clinical studies. The present work reports the design, synthesis, and biological assessment of the impact of six benzenesulfonamide biguanides on various aspects of hemostasis, cell function, red blood cell integrity (RBC), and their ability to uptake glucose in human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs). It was found that all synthesized o- and m-benzenesulfonamides, particularly derivatives with nitro (3) and amino groups (4), are characterized by a good safety profile in HUVECs, which was further confirmed in the cellular integrity studies. The biguanide analogues with methoxy group (1, 2) and an amino substituent (5, 6) significantly increased glucose utilization in HUVECs, similarly to the parent drug. Intriguingly, compounds 1, 3, and 6 favourably influenced some of the coagulation parameters. Furthermore, derivative 3 also slowed the process of fibrin polymerization, indicating more beneficial anti-coagulant properties than metformin. None of the novel metformin analogues interact strongly with the erythrocyte lipid-protein bilayer. Our findings indicate that derivative 3 has highly desirable anti-coagulant properties, and compounds 1 and 6 have potential dual-action activity, including anti-hyperglycaemic properties and anti-coagulant activity. As such, these derivatives can be used as lead molecules for further development of anti-diabetic agents with a beneficial effect on hypercoagulability.

Abstract
Advanced glycation end-products play an important role in the development of diabetic complications, so slowing down of glycated proteins’ cross-links formation have been suggested as a potential therapeutic option for the treatment of vascular diabetic complications and preventing their progression.The aim of the work was to assess the influence of novel anticrosslinking agent DF-5 on the renal advanced glycation end-products and collagen contents, body weight, blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin levels and the development of early renal disease in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.Materials and methods. 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in the study. Two months after inducing diabetes, the study substance was administered intragastrically once a day for 28 days (12.5 mg/kg). Measurements included the assessment of blood glucose and HbA1c levels, the evaluation of the renal function, and the results of histology and immunohistochemical staining of kidneys.Results. A repeated intragastric administration of DF-5 for 30 days significantly reduced the level of HbA1c in the blood, but did not affect the level of fasting blood glucose. DF-5 compound significantly reduced proteinuria and prevented kidney damage in experimental animals by limiting damage of the glomeruli and tubules. It was found that DF-5 inhibits the progression of an early renal dysfunction in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy. This was associated with a decreased accumulation of advanced glycation end-products in the kidney, accompanied by the improvement of both renal morphology and function.Conclusion. The results obtained provide investigators with additional therapeutic options for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy and possibly other complications of diabetes.

Abstract
Herein are reported the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) quantification and mitochondria membrane potential (MMP) of the mitochondria of diabetic adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) in vitro. Additionally, the expression of PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) and RBR E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase (PARKIN) genes, which are involved in mitochondrial quality, were quantified. First, type one diabetes was induced in 10 rats. The rats were then kept for 1 month, after which fat tissue was excised from subcutaneous regions, and stem cells were selected from the fat, characterized as ADSC, and cultivated and increased in elevated sugar conditions in vitro; these samples were considered diabetic-ADSC. Two groups were formed, namely, diabetic-control-ADSC and PBM-diabetic-ADSC. ATP, ROS quantification, and MMP of mitochondria of diabetic ADSCs in vitro were measured, and the expression of PINK1 and Parkin genes was quantified in vitro. The results revealed that PBM significantly increased ATP quantification (p = 0.05) and MMP activity (p = 0.000) in diabetic-ADSCs in vitro compared to the control diabetic-ADSCs; however, it significantly decreased ROS quantification (p = 0.002) and PINK1(p = 0.003) and PARKIN gene expression (p = 0.046) in diabetic-ADSCs. The current findings indicate for the first time that PBM has the potential to maintain the function and quality of mitochondrial diabetic-ADSCs by significantly increasing ATP quantification and MMP activity in diabetic-ADSCs in vitro while significantly decreasing ROS quantification and PINK1 and PARKIN gene expression, making PBM an attractive candidate for use in improving the efficacy of autologous stem cell remedies for diabetic patients with infected diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract
In this study, a stepwise reaction afforded thiazolidinone-based benzothiazole derivatives 1–15, and the synthesized derivatives were then screened for biological significance and found to be the leading candidates against α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. Almost all derivatives showed excellent to good activity ranging against α-amylase, IC50 = 2.10 ± 0.70 to 37.50 ± 0.70 μM, and α-glucosidase, IC50 = 3.20 ± 0.05 to 39.40 ± 0.80 μM. Some analogues such as 4 (2.40 ± 0.70 and 3.50 ± 0.70 μM), 5 (2.30 ± 0.05 and 4.80 ± 0.10 μM), and 6 (2.10 ± 0.70 and 3.20 ± 0.70 μM) were found with folds better activity than that of the standard drug acarbose (9.10 ± 0.10 and 10.70 ± 0.10 μM), respectively. Moreover, the structure–activity relationship (SAR) has been established for all compounds. A molecular docking study has been carried out to explore the binding interactions against α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes.

Abstract
Students with chronic conditions (CC) tend to experience several barriers in terms of their school participation and performance. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the factors related to the time of diagnosis of CC (recent/non-recent), the barriers to participation and academic success (health condition, people’s attitude towards CC and school physical environment), the physical and mental health (physical/psychological symptoms and concerns) and school-related variables (relationship with teachers and peers), regarding the school participation of first-year students with CC. This work is part of the HOUSE-Colégio F3 Project, University of Lisbon, which includes 1143 first-year university students from 17 Faculties and Institutes of the University of Lisbon. In this specific study, only the subsample of 207 students with CC was considered, 72.4% of which were female, aged between 18 and 54 years (M = 20.00; SD = 4.83). The results showed that students with a recent diagnosis of CC and students with school participation affected by the CC were those who presented more negative indicators regarding barriers to school participation, physical and mental health, and school-related variables. A greater impact of CC in terms of school participation was associated with having a recent diagnosis, with people’s attitude towards CC and with the health condition as barriers, with more psychological symptoms and worse relationships with teachers and peers. This is a relevant message for the organization of health services for students with CC at the beginning of their university studies, especially since they are often displaced from home and managing their health conditions alone (in many cases, for the first time).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test the antidiabetic potential of Gardenia latifolia extract (GLE) in rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) + streptozotocin (STZ). METHODS The study was carried out in June 2021. Gardenia latifolia powdered leaves were subjected to Soxhlet extraction using ethanol. Male rats were administered a low dose-40 mg/kg STZ by intraperitoneal route following 2 weeks of HFD to induce type-2 diabetic rats (T2DR). Rats were randomized into 5 groups (n=6). Group 1 (normal control; 10 ml/kg normal saline); Group 2 (diabetic control: DC); Group 3 (standard; DR + metformin, 100 mg/kg per oral); Group 4 (DR + GLE 250 mg/kg); Group 5 (DR + GLE 500 mg/kg). The treatment period extended for 2 weeks. Body weight and fasting blood glucose were determined on days 0, 7, and 14. Fasting serum insulin (FSI) levels, fasting blood glucose (FBG), HOMA-IR, antioxidant enzyme level, Insulin tolerance test (ITT), and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT) tests were estimated. RESULTS Gardenia latifolia extract exhibited a marked decrease (p<0.001) in fasting blood glucose levels. T2DR receiving a higher dose of GLE showed a greater improvement in metabolic indices (FSI, FBG, Homeostatic Model Assessment of insulin resistance). The ITT and IPGTT results demonstrated that GLE could significantly enhance insulin tolerance, glucose tolerance, and antioxidant enzyme levels in T2DR. CONCLUSION Gardenia latifolia can be an ideal medicinal plant candidate for treating T2DM, and it should be investigated further for its therapeutic potential.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes related foot ulcers can have physical, social, emotional, and financial impacts on the daily life and wellbeing of many people living with diabetes. Effective treatment of diabetes related foot ulcers requires a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary approach involving a podiatrist, other healthcare professionals, and the person with diabetes however, limited research has been conducted on the lived experience of podiatric treatment for diabetes related foot ulcers to understand how people are engaged in their ulcer management. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the lived experience of receiving podiatric treatment for diabetes related foot ulcers in a tertiary care outpatient setting. METHODS Ten participants were interviewed. All were male, with mean age of 69 (SD 15) years and currently undergoing podiatric treatment for a diabetes related foot ulcer in a tertiary care setting. Participants with diabetes related foot ulcers were purposively recruited from the outpatient podiatry clinic at a tertiary hospital in a metropolitan region of South Australia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain insight into the lived experience of people receiving podiatric treatment for their foot ulcer and understand how this experience impacts their regular lifestyle. Data were analysed using a thematic analysis method. RESULTS Four themes were identified that add an understanding of the lived experience of participants: 'Trusting the podiatrists with the right expertise', 'Personalised care', 'Happy with the service, but not always with prescribed care', and 'It's a long journey'. Participants described professional behaviour including high organisation and hygiene practices and demonstrated expertise as key factors influencing their trust of a podiatrist's care. Information tailored to individual needs was helpful for participants. Offloading devices and ulcer dressings were often burdensome. Podiatric treatment for foot ulcers was a lengthy and onerous experience for all participants. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study suggest podiatrists can use practical strategies of maintaining consistency in who provides podiatry care for the person, demonstration of high organisational and hygiene standards, and using innovation to adapt information and equipment to suit an individual's lifestyle to support positive experiences of podiatric ulcer care. There is a need for further research to understand how a person's experience of podiatric ulcer care differs amongst genders, cultural groups, and healthcare settings to facilitate positive care experiences and reduce treatment burden for all people with diabetes requiring podiatric ulcer treatment.

Abstract
Background: Sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are a new class of oral anti-diabetic drugs which improve glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by preventing the kidney from reabsorbing glucose back to blood. Community pharmacists have long-term relationships with most of their chronic patients, so they play a key role in care for people with diabetes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess pharmacists’ knowledge and practice towards SGLT2 inhibitors. Thus, improving pharmacists’ knowledge about this group of medications could improve the treatment outcome of people with diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to meet the study objectives. A convenience sample of 348 community pharmacists in Jordan was recruited. knowledge and practice were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire created for the purpose of this study. Results: A total of 400 community pharmacists were reached, of whom 348 answered the survey (response rate 87%). The results indicated that SGLT2 inhibitors knowledge score among community pharmacists in Jordan was 6.61 (out of 12). Factors like age, gender, location of the pharmacy, years of pharmacists’ experience had no effect on knowledge score; however, pharmacists who attended training courses on diabetes had higher knowledge scores. Additionally, pharmacists’ dispensing practice toward SGLT2 inhibitors had insufficient knowledge, such as lack of knowledge about the superiority of SGLT2 inhibitors over other anti-diabetics and inability to give the best advice to patients. Conclusions: Our findings reflect a moderate knowledge among community pharmacists about SGLT2 inhibitors which may negatively affect the patients’ outcome; thus, continuous education for the pharmacists is essential.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is the most common chronic metabolic disorder worldwide. The present study was designed to investigate the potential role of cinnamon bark extract oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) in controlling streptozotocin (STZ)-induced hyperglycemia and to clarify the underlying molecular mechanisms underlying its effects. For this purpose, 60 male rats were equally divided into six groups as follows: The normal control group; OPC control group (non-diabetic rats treated with OPC at 300 mg/kg orally for 21 days); the untreated diabetic control group; the wortmannin control group [diabetic rats treated with wortmannin at 1 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.) on the final day of the experiment]; the OPC diabetic group (diabetic rats treated with OPC at 300 mg/kg orally for 21 days); and the OPC diabetic + wortmannin co-treated group (diabetic rats treated with OPC at 300 mg/kg/day for 21 consecutive days and then 24 h after the final OPC dose treated with a single wortmannin injection at 1 mg/kg, i.p.). The results indicated that OPC ameliorated the diabetic state, as evidenced by a significant decrease in serum glucose levels, and a significant increase in the levels of insulin, amylin, insulin receptor phosphorylation, glycogen and glucose transporter-4 translocation; it also improved the lipid profile in STZ-diabetic rats. On the whole, the findings of the present study provide biochemical evidence that OPC treatment is effective as an anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic agent by enhancing glucose uptake through the activation of insulin receptor kinase activity and the PI3K/Akt pathway.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic degenerative disease characterized by hyperglycemia and oxidative stress. Iron catalyzes free radical overproduction. High iron concentrations have previously been reported to promote an increase in oxidative stress; however, the effect of iron restriction in diabetes has not yet been explored, so we tested to see if iron restriction in diabetic rats reduces oxidative damage and improved muscle function. Wistar rats were assigned to 4 groups: Control; Diabetic; Diabetic rats with a high iron diet, and Diabetic with dietary iron restriction. After 8 weeks the rats were sacrificed, the muscles were extracted to prepare homogenates, and serum was obtained for biochemical measurements. Low iron diabetic rats showed an increase in the development of muscle strength in both muscles. Dietary iron restriction decreased triglyceride concentrations compared to the untreated diabetic rats and the levels of extremely low-density lipoproteins. Aggravation of lipid peroxidation was observed in the diabetic group with a high iron diet, while these levels remained low with iron restriction. Iron restriction improved muscle strength development and reduced fatigue times; this was related to better lipid profile control and decreased oxidant stress markers.

Effect of Camel Milk on Glucose Homeostasis in Patients with Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14061245. Abstract
The effects of camel milk (CM) intake on glycemic control in patients with diabetes are controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to summarize the effect of CM intake on glucose homeostasis parameters in patients with both types of diabetes mellitus; T1DM and T2DM. We searched Google Scholar, PubMed/MEDLINE, EBSCO host, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, ProQuest Medical, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception until the end of November 2021. Relevant RCTs were identified, and the effect size was reported as mean difference (MD) and standard deviation (SD). Parameters of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG), postprandial blood glucose (PBG), fasting serum insulin (FI), insulin resistance (expressed in terms of HOMA-IR), insulin dose (ID) received, serum insulin antibody (IA), and C-peptide (CP) were tested. Out of 4054 collected articles, 14 RCTs (total 663 subjects) were eligible for inclusion. The pooled results obtained using a random-effects model showed a statistically significant decrease in HbA1c levels (MD, −1.24, 95% confidence interval (CI): −2.00, −0.48, p < 0.001 heterogeneity (I2) = 94%) and ID received (MD, −16.72, 95% CI: −22.09, −11.35 p < 0.00001, I2 = 90%), with a clear tendency was shown, but non-significant, to decrease FBG (MD, −23.32, 95% CI: −47.33, 0.70, p = 0.06, I2 = 98%) in patients with diabetes who consumed CM in comparison to those on usual care. Conversely, the consumption of CM did not show significant reductions in the rest of the glucose homeostasis parameters. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with T2DM were more beneficially affected by CM intake than those with T1DM in lowering FBG, while patients with T1DM were more beneficially affected by CM intake than those with T2DM in lowering HbA1c. Both fresh and treated (pasteurized/fermented) CM gave similar beneficial effects in lowering HbA1c. Lastly, a relatively superior effect for longer duration on shorter duration (>6 months, ≤6 months, respectively) of CM intake is found in lowering HbA1c. To conclude, long-term consumption of CM by patients with diabetes could be a useful adjuvant therapy alongside classical medications, especially in lowering the required insulin dose and HbA1c. Due to the high heterogeneity observed in the included studies, more controlled trials with a larger sample size are warranted to confirm our results and to control some confounders and interfering factors existing in the analyzed articles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are essential AAs which are widely used as antioxidants in patients with liver and kidney dysfunction. However, BCAAs are strongly correlated with insulin resistance (IR) and diabetes. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship among BCAAs, oxidative stress, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a Chinese population. METHODS Anthropometric and biochemical examinations were performed in 816 individuals who participated in the Huai'an Diabetes Prevention Program. Serum BCAAs concentrations were measured by hydrophilic interaction chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method. Oxidative stress was evaluated by malondialdehyde (MDA) as an index of lipid peroxidation and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. RESULTS A total of 816 participants were divided into three groups: normal glucose metabolism (NGM), prediabetes, and newly-diagnosed diabetes mellitus (NDM). Subjects in NDM group show higher MDA and lower SOD levels than subjects in other groups. L-Val levels positively correlated with MDA levels and negatively with SOD in NDM groups. After adjusting for T2DM risk factors, high L-Val levels were significantly associated with higher BMI, WC, FPG, increased LnTG and decreased HDL-C. L-Val was also independently associated with NDM (OR 1.06, 95% CI 1.02-1.10; P = 0.005). Furthermore, the odds ratios for NDM among participants with high L-Val (≥35.25μg/mL) levels showed a 2.25-fold (95% CI 1.11-4.57; P = 0.024) increase compared to participants with low L-Val (<27.26 μg/mL) levels after adjusting for MDA and confounding factors. CONCLUSION High serum L-Val levels are independently associated with oxidative stress, thus promoting IR and NDM. Further study should be done to clarify the mechanism.

Abstract
Physical activity behaviour is complex, particularly in low-resource settings, while existing behavioural models of physical activity behaviour are often linear and deterministic. The objective of this review was to (i) synthesise the wide scope of factors that affect physical activity and thereby (ii) underpin the complexity of physical activity in low-resource settings through a qualitative meta-synthesis of studies conducted among patients with cardiometabolic disease living in low-to-middle income countries (LMIC). A total of 41 studies were included from 1200 unique citations (up to 15 March 2021). Using a hybrid form of content analysis, unique factors (n = 208) that inform physical activity were identified, and, through qualitative meta-synthesis, these codes were aggregated into categories (n = 61) and synthesised findings (n = 26). An additional five findings were added through deliberation within the review team. Collectively, the 31 synthesised findings highlight the complexity of physical activity behaviour, and the connectedness between person, social context, healthcare system, and built and natural environment. Existing behavioural and ecological models are inadequate in fully understanding physical activity participation in patients with cardiometabolic disease living in LMIC. Future research, building on complexity science and systems thinking, is needed to identify key mechanisms of action applicable to the local context.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to explore the association between diabetes mellitus and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of older people in Shanghai, China, especially regarding the differences in each aspect of the EQ-5D and how large the score gaps are between older people with and without diabetes. Methods A total of 11,103 people of either sex older than 60 years were enrolled from 17 districts of Shanghai. The EQ-5D-3L was used to assess the HRQoL of older people. The Wilcoxon rank sum test and t-test were used to compare the difference in HRQoL between people with or without diabetes. After univariate regression, multiple linear regression and ordinal logistic regression were conducted to evaluate the influence of diabetes mellitus and other confounding variables on the EQ VAS scores and on the five dimensions of the EQ-5D. Results Twelve percent of all participants had diabetes mellitus, and the proportion was almost the same between men and women. The EQ VAS scores of people with diabetes mellitus were approximately 3.70 points lower than those of people without diabetes (95% CI = -4.40, -2.99, p < 0.001) after adjusting for confounding variables. People with diabetes mellitus had increased problems with mobility (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.33, 1.85), self-care (OR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.35, 2.01), usual activities (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.51, 2.11), pain/discomfort (OR = 1.42, 95% CI = 1.24, 1.64), and anxiety/depression (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.07, 1.64). Conclusions This study showed that diabetes mellitus was associated with the HRQoL of older people and that older people with diabetes had poorer performance in every aspect of EQ-5D measurements.

Abstract
The perturbation in plasma free amino acid metabolome has been observed previously in diabetes mellitus, and is associated with insulin resistance as well as the onset of cardiovascular disease in this population. In this study, we investigated, for the first time, changes in the amino acid profile in a group of people with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D) with normal BMI, from Jordan, who were only managed on metformin. Twenty one amino acids were evaluated in plasma samples from 124 people with T2D and 67 healthy controls, matched for age, gender and BMI, using amino acids analyser. Total amino acids, essential amino acids, non-essential amino acids and semi-essential amino acids were similar in T2D compared to healthy controls. Plasma concentrations of four essential amino acids were increased in the presence of T2D (Leucine, p < 0.01, Lysine, p < 0.001, Phenylalanine, p < 0.01, Tryptophan, p < 0.05). On the other hand, in relation to non-essential amino acids, Alanine and Serine were reduced in T2D (p < 0.01, p < 0.001, respectively), whereas Aspartate and Glutamate were increased in T2D compared to healthy controls (p < 0.001, p < 0.01, respectively). A semi-essential amino acid, Cystine, was also increased in T2D compared to healthy controls (p < 0.01). Citrulline, a metabolic indicator amino acid, demonstrated lower plasma concentration in T2D compared to healthy controls (p < 0.01). These amino acids were also correlated with fasting blood glucose and HbA1c (p < 0.05). Glutamate, glycine and arginine were correlated with the duration of metformin treatment (p < 0.05). No amino acid was correlated with lipid profiles. Disturbances in the metabolism of these amino acids are closely implicated in the pathogenesis of T2D and associated cardiovascular disease. Therefore, these perturbed amino acids could be explored as therapeutic targets to improve T2D management and prevent associated cardiovascular complications.

Abstract
Background The global pandemic of diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is the direct cause of significant health and economic problems for both governments and individuals owing to the high level of morbidity and mortality. South Africa has the second highest incidence of DM2 in sub-Saharan Africa. Aim This article describes the experiences of diabetes nurse educators in relation to self-management of DM2 of persons living with DM2. Setting This article involves nurse educators working in diabetes clinics in public and private hospitals in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa. Methods A semi-structured interview guide was used to collect data from a focus group interview comprising three participants and two individual interviews. The interviews were recorded with the permission of participants, transcribed and then coded using Tesch’s model of data analysis. Themes were agreed upon with the consensus of the researcher, two supervisors and an independent coder. Results Three themes were identified: (1) diabetes nurse educators have clear perceptions about the importance of self-management of DM2 of persons living with DM2, (2) there are factors that affect persons living with DM2 with respect to self-management and (3) there are ways in which professional nurses can assist persons living with DM2 in the self-management of their condition. Conclusion This article identified factors that diabetes nurse educators experienced in either assisting or hindering patients in self-management of their DM2. The diabetes nurse educators voiced their views on how professional nurses can provide support to the patients living with DM2.

Abstract
Four series of thirteen new coumarin-chalcone hybrids (DPCU 1-13, DPCT 1-13, DCCU 1-13 and DCCT 1-13) were designed and synthesized using Biginelli synthesis, Pechmann condensation, Acetylation, and Claisen-Schmidt reactions. Synthesized compounds were tested for insulin receptor in silico docking studies (PDB ID: 1IR3); DCCU 13 and DCCT 13 derivatives received the lowest docking score; Streptozocin (STZ) and Nicotinamide (NA) induced type II diabetes was tested for their anti-diabetic activity in rats. In vivo tests suggested that fasting blood glucose levels of animals treated with DCCU 13 (30 mg/kg body weight) and DCCT 13 (30 mg/kg body weight) were significantly and moderately suppressed, respectively, relative to fasting blood glucose levels of diabetic control animals. Similarly, therapy with DCCU 13 and DCCT 13 attenuated oxidative stress parameters such as lipid peroxidation (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and increased the glutathione (GSH) in the liver and pancreas in a dose-dependent manner. In comparison, therapy with DCCU 13 (30 mg/kg body weight) mitigated alterations in the histological architecture of the liver and pancreatic tissue. These results indicated that the hybrids DUUC 13 and DCCT 13 at 30 mg/kg had an anti-hyperglycemic and antioxidant impact on STZ + NA mediated type II diabetes in rats. Further detailed work could be required to determine the precise mode of action of the anti-diabetic behavior of hybrids.

Abstract
Organ-on-chip technology is a promising tool for investigating physiological in vitro responses in drug screening development, and in advanced disease models. Within this framework, we investigated the behavior of rat islets of Langerhans in an organ-on-chip model. The islets were trapped by sedimentation in a biochip with a microstructure based on microwells, and perfused for 5 days of culture. The live/dead assay confirmed the high viability of the islets in the biochip cultures. The microfluidic culture leads to upregulation of mRNA levels of important pancreatic islet genes: Ins1, App, Insr, Gcgr, Reg3a and Neurod. Furthermore, insulin and glucagon secretion were higher in the biochips compared to the Petri conditions after 5 days of culture. We also confirmed glucose-induced insulin secretion in biochips via high and low glucose stimulations leading to high/low insulin secretion. The high responsiveness of the pancreatic islets to glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) stimulation in the biochips was reflected by the upregulation of mRNA levels of Gcgr, Reg3a, Neurog3, Ins1, Ins2, Stt and Glp-1r and by increased insulin secretion. The results obtained highlighted the functionality of the islets in the biochips and illustrated the potential of our pancreas-on-chip model for future pancreatic disease modeling and anti-diabetic drugs screening.

Abstract
While noncovalent interactions at two-dimensional nanobiointerfaces are extensively investigated, less knowledge about covalent interactions at this interface is available. In this work, boronic acid-functionalized 2D MoS2 was synthesized and its covalent multivalent interactions with bacteria and nematodes were investigated. Polymerization of glycidol by freshly exfoliated MoS2 and condensation of 2,5-thiophenediylbisboronic acid on the produced platform resulted in boronic acid-functionalized 2D MoS2. The destructive interactions between 2D MoS2 and bacteria as well as nematodes were significantly amplified by boronic acid functional groups. Because of the high antibacterial and antinematodal activities of boronic acid-functionalized 2D MoS2, its therapeutic efficacy for diabetic wound healing was investigated. The infected diabetic wounds were completely healed 10 days after treatment with boronic acid-functionalized 2D MoS2, and a normal structure for recovered tissues including different layers of skin, collagen, and blood vessels was detected.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The comorbid association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and a psychological profile characterized by depression and/or anxiety has been reported to increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CAD), the most striking macrovascular complication of diabetes. The purpose of the present study was to quantify anxiety, depression and the presence of type D personality, and to correlate the scores obtained with cardiovascular risk factors and disease severity in diabetic patients. Materials and methods: The retrospective study included 169 clinically stable diabetic patients divided into two groups: group 1 without macrovascular complications (n = 107) and group 2 with CAD, stroke and/or peripheral vascular disease (n = 62). A biochemical analysis and an assessment of psychic stress by applying the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)and the Type D scale (DS-14) to determine anxiety, depression and D personality scores were done in all patients. Statistical analysis was made using SPSSv17 and Microsoft Excel, non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: Following application of the HAD questionnaire for the entire group (n = 169), anxiety was present in 105 patients (62.2%), and depression in 96 patients (56.8%). Group 2 showed significantly higher anxiety scores compared to group 1 (p = 0.014), while depression scores were not significantly different. Per entire group, analysis of DS-14 scores revealed social inhibition (SI) present in 56 patients (33%) and negative affectivity (NA) in 105 patients (62%). TheDS-14 SI score was significantly higher in group 2 compared to group 1 (p = 0.036). Type D personality, resulting from scores above 10 in both DS-14 parameter categories, was present in 51 patients of the study group (30%). There was a direct and significant correlation (r = 0.133, p = 0.025) between the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety (HAD-A) score and the LDL-c values. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrated that more than a half of patients with diabetes had anxiety and/or depression and one third had Type D personality, sustaining that monitoring of emotional state and depression should be included in the therapeutic plan of these patients. New treatment strategies are needed to improve the well-being of diabetic patients with psychological comorbidities.

Abstract
Background:
Adherence to diabetes control is important to determine an individual’s ability to maintain treatment focus of Diabetes Mellitus . The Locus of Control thereby assesses the behavior of an individual to diabetes control.
Objective:
The aim of this study was to analyze the pathways of diabetes control beliefs based on the variable locus of control in the integration of locus of control theory and the theory of planning behavior on diabetes mellitus control behavior.
Methods:
This study was carried out as an explanatory research with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique was consecutive. The sample size was determined using multivariate numerical analytic one-time predictive concept framework and 143 respondents at 8 locations were recruited by a random lottery method. Demographic data analysis of respondents was done using statistical software, namely IBM Statistics SPSS using a Chi-square statistical test. The proposed hypothesis was tested by the bivariate analysis of variance to assess the effect of causal variables.
Results:
The results of this study indicate that locus of control affects diabetic control beliefs (ρ = 0.05; α = 0.06; b = 0.16; b2 = 0.03; F = 3.91) in the diabetes mellitus control behavior.
Conclusion:
The findings of this study suggest a need to consistently provide positive information and support as a locus of control to guard a strong intention to control diabetes mellitus.
