Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional pilot study evaluated the impact of age on masticatory performance among individuals aged 65 to 106 years, as part of the Heidelberg Dental Centenarian Study (HD-100Z) conducted in South-Western Germany. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 31 centenarians were recruited, alongside 31 individuals each from the age groups 75-99 and 65-74, matched based on sex, prosthetic status, and number of teeth. Masticatory performance was assessed using a two-colored chewing gum test and digital image processing. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to assess the effect of age, sex, number of teeth, type of prosthesis on the masticatory performance. RESULTS Masticatory performance, as measured by the standard deviation of hue in the chewing gum test, decreased significantly in centenarians compared to individuals aged 75-99 years (-0.112, p = 0.037) and those aged 65-74 years (-0.274, p < 0.001). The effects of sex, number of teeth, and type of prosthesis on masticatory performance were not significant associations (p ≥ 0.135). CONCLUSION The findings suggest that age may have a significant influence on masticatory performance in the studied age groups, challenging previous notions that aging itself has little impact on masticatory ability. The inclusion of centenarians in the study highlights the need for further investigation into masticatory function in age groups reaching up to 100 years or more. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study contributes to the understanding of how ageing affects oral function, which may guide dental treatment approaches for older individuals, and set the stage for more in-depth investigations in this field in the future.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the relationship between mastication and malnutrition in community-dwelling older adults. RESEARCH STRATEGIES To establish the eligibility criteria, the acronym PECOS was used: Population: non-institutionalized older adults; Exposure: older adults with malnutrition; Control: older adults without malnutrition; Outcome: masticatory problems in malnourished older adults; Study types: observational studies. SELECTION CRITERIA It selected studies assessing malnutrition and mastication difficulties in non-institutionalized adults over 60 years old, of both sexes. Mastication and malnutrition were evaluated with questionnaires on self-reported symptoms and clinical and instrumental assessments. There were no restrictions on language, year of publication, or ethnicity. DATA ANALYSIS The included studies were evaluated for methodological quality with the Joanna Briggs Institute tool for cross-sectional studies. For the cross-sectional studies included, the odds ratio (OR) was calculated with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS After searching the databases, 692 references were retrieved, with three studies selected for quantitative and qualitative analysis. The values obtained in the meta-analysis for association show that malnutrition and mastication difficulties were 2.21 times as likely to occur (OR = 2.21; 95%CI = 0.93 - 5.26; I2 = 94%) as individuals without malnutrition (p < 0.001). The assessment of the risk of bias presented a high-risk, a moderate-risk, and a low-risk study. The certainty of evidence was rated very low with the GRADE tool. CONCLUSION Individuals at risk of malnutrition are 2.21 times as likely to have mastication difficulties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Secondary healthcare data use has been increasing in the dental research field. The validity of the number of remaining teeth assessed from Japanese dental claims data has been reported in several studies, but has not been tested in the general population in Japan. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the validity of the number of remaining teeth assessed from Japanese dental claims data and assess its predictability against subsequent health deterioration. METHODS We used the claims data of residents of a municipality that implemented oral health screening programs. Using the number of teeth in the screening records as the reference standard, we assessed the validity of the claims-based number of teeth by calculating the mean differences. In addition, we assessed the association between the claims-based number of teeth and pneumococcal disease (PD) or Alzheimer's disease (AD) in adults aged ≥65 years using Cox proportional hazards analyses. RESULTS Of the 10,154 participants, the mean number of teeth assessed from the claims data was 20.9, that in the screening records was 20.5, and their mean difference was 0.5. During the 3-year follow-up, PD or AD onset was observed in 10.4% (3,212/30,838) and 5.3% (1,589/30,207) of participants, respectively. Compared with participants with ≥20 teeth, those with 1-9 teeth had a 1.29 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.17-1.43) or 1.19 (95% CI: 1.04-1.36) times higher risk of developing PD or AD, respectively. CONCLUSION High validity of the claims-based number of teeth was observed. In addition, the claims-based number of teeth was associated with the risk of PD and AD.

Abstract
Masticatory function is associated with a variety of health outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to clarify the predictive value of masticatory function for adverse health outcomes, such as frailty, sarcopenia and malnutrition, in older adults. An online literature search covered articles published in English or Dutch in three databases (PubMed, Embase and CINAHL, last searched November 4th 2022). Inclusion criteria were: an observational study design, focus on adults aged ≥65 years and evaluation of the association between masticatory function and health outcomes. Reviews and articles published before the year 2000 were excluded. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Study population demographics, methods for assessing masticatory function, and the association between masticatory function and adverse health outcomes were extracted. From the 34 included studies, 5 studies had a prospective design, 2 had a retrospective design, and the other 27 studies had cross-sectional design. The majority of the studies were conducted in Japan (74%, n = 26). Twenty studies (59%) used one indicator for masticatory function, the other 41% used two (n = 9) or more (n = 5) indicators. Masticatory function was most frequently assessed with the maximum occlusal force (MOF) (79%, n = 27). The identified health outcomes were clustered into 6 categories: physical parameters and sarcopenia, history of falling, nutritional status, frailty, cognitive function and mortality. Despite the complex and multidimensional character of both masticatory function and most identified adverse health outcomes, some significant associations were reported. Prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with incidence of frailty and frailty progression, cognitive decline and all-cause mortality. Regarding the other identified adverse health outcomes, i.e., physical measures and sarcopenia, history of falling and nutritional status, only cross-sectional studies were available and results were less concordant. As all prospective studies showed that reduced masticatory function in older adults is associated with adverse health outcomes, prevention of decline of masticatory function by adequate oral care may contribute to healthy ageing.

Abstract
Albumin is the most abundant protein in human serum and a specific amount of albumin also can be found in the saliva. It has several physiological functions such as blood colloidal osmotic pressure, antioxidant activity, binding and transporting of endogenous and exogenous substrates. We conducted an electronic search across several databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase and Science Direct using the relevant MeSH terms and keywords like "albumin", "serum albumin", "salivary albumin", "oral health" "dental caries" and "epidemiology". Only the epidemiological studies published between 2010 and 2023 were included. After the application of the inclusion criteria, a total of 51 studied were included in this narrative review. Serum and salivary albumin tests have been used in various aspects of oral health as a diagnostic and prognostic factor. Some of the results point out to a pattern of association while some of them are inconclusive and even contradictory. This narrative review discusses the role, significance and impact of albumin in epidemiological oral health related studies including the categories of periodontal health and disease, dental caries, oral function and hypofunction, nutrition and malnutrition, tooth loss and its treatment, diabetes and cancer. In addition, it offers a short manual for the researchers on when, where and how to use albumin tests in planning their study designs whether investigating an association or measure them as a covariate.

Abstract
AIM Awareness of difficulty chewing may limit the diversity of food intake in older adults. However, few studies have clarified which factors are related to subjective difficulty in chewing. The aim was to identify factors related to subjective difficulty in chewing in 70- and 80-year-old Japanese older adults. METHODS A total of 1680 participants (792 men, 888 women) were surveyed. Difficulty in chewing was assessed with questionnaires regarding food intake, such as rice, apples, beef, and hard rice crackers. The participants were classified into two groups, the "with difficulty" group (participants who answered "cannot eat," "can eat with difficulty," and "can eat if small") and the "without difficulty" group (participants who answered "can eat without problems"), according to their answers to questionnaires for each food. A logistic regression analysis with subjective difficulty in chewing as the dependent variable was performed for each food. RESULTS Subjective difficulty in chewing was associated with age, occlusal force, and depression for rice; age, number of remaining teeth, occlusal force, and depression for apples; number of remaining teeth, occlusal force, and depression for beef; and number of remaining teeth and occlusal force for hard rice crackers. CONCLUSIONS Age, number of remaining teeth, and occlusal force, as well as depression, might be related to subjective evaluation of difficulty chewing in community-dwelling Japanese older adults. Abstract
AIM To examine the effect of periodontitis on the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and MetS components. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 4761 participants aged 30-74 years who underwent health examinations at both baseline and 8-year follow-up. The Japanese MetS criteria were used for diagnosis. The Community Periodontal Index was used to assess periodontal status. The association between periodontal status and MetS incidence was examined by Poisson regression analysis. RESULTS Multivariate analysis revealed that individuals with a ≥6 mm periodontal pocket had a significantly higher relative risk (RR) for MetS onset, as compared to individuals without deep periodontal pockets (adjusted RR 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.67). Compared to individuals without a deep periodontal pocket, individuals with a ≥6 mm periodontal pocket had significantly higher RRs for developing two components of MetS; the RRs were 1.25 (95% CI: 1.01-1.56) for abdominal obesity and 1.39 (95% CI: 1.03-1.86) for hyperglycaemia. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with periodontitis had a significantly higher risk of MetS onset, possibly due to the influence of periodontitis on abdominal obesity and hyperglycaemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have examined the association between oral health, care needs, and physical function, but few have focused on the association between oral health and locomotive syndrome (LS). We examined the association between LS and oral-health status, such as the number of teeth and chewing function, in an adult population. METHODS The study included 2888 participants who underwent examinations of motor function and oral health. Individuals with LS stage 1 or higher were classified as having LS, while others were classified as not having it. Logistic regression analysis was performed using the presence or absence of LS as the dependent variable and age, sex, smoking status, drinking habit, exercise habit, walking speed, history of stroke, bone density, body mass index, metabolic syndrome, chewing function, and the number of teeth as independent variables to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each independent variable. RESULTS When the number of teeth and chewing function were included separately in multivariate analyses, the OR for LS was significantly higher for participants with 0-19 teeth than for those with 28 teeth, and for participants with poor chewing function than for those with good function (adjusted ORs, 1.47 [95% CI, 1.01-2.15] and 1.73 [95% CI, 1.37-2.18], respectively). In analyses that included tooth number and chewing function as a combined independent variable, relative to individuals with 28 teeth and good masticatory function, the adjusted ORs were 2.67 (95% CI, 1.57-4.52) for those with 28 teeth and poor chewing function, 1.63 (95% CI, 1.20-2.22) for those with 20-27 teeth and poor chewing function, and 1.83 (95% CI, 1.06-3.18) for those with 0-19 teeth and poor chewing function. CONCLUSION Having fewer teeth and poor chewing function may be associated with LS. The maintenance of masticatory function may be important to prevent LS in adulthood.

Abstract
Ageing is an inevitable aspect of life and thus successful ageing is an important focus of recent scientific efforts. The biological process of ageing is mediated through the interaction of genes with environmental factors, increasing the body's susceptibility to insults. Elucidating this process will increase our ability to prevent and treat age-related disease and consequently extend life expectancy. Notably, centenarians offer a unique perspective on the phenomenon of ageing. Current research highlights several age-associated alterations on the genetic, epigenetic and proteomic level. Consequently, nutrient sensing and mitochondrial function are altered, resulting in inflammation and exhaustion of regenerative ability.Oral health, an important contributor to overall health, remains underexplored in the context of extreme longevity. Good masticatory function ensures sufficient nutrient uptake, reducing morbidity and mortality in old age. The relationship between periodontal disease and systemic inflammatory pathologies is well established. Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease are among the most significant disease burdens influenced by inflammatory oral health conditions. Evidence suggests that the interaction is bi-directional, impacting progression, severity and mortality. Current models of ageing and longevity neglect an important factor in overall health and well-being, a gap that this review intends to illustrate and inspire avenues for future research.

Abstract
Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is the major iatrogenic complication of orthodontic treatment, seriously endangering tooth longevity and impairing masticatory function. Osteoclasts are thought to be the primary effector cells that initiate the pathological process of OIIRR; however, the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for OIIRR remain unclear. Our previous studies revealed that cementocytes, the major mechanically responsive cells in cementum, respond to compressive stress to activate and influence osteoclasts locally. For this study, we hypothesized that the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) signaling pathway, a key mechanotransduction pathway in cementocytes, may regulate osteoclasts under the different magnitudes of either physiologic compressive stress that causes tooth movement or pathologic stress that causes OIIRR. Here, we show a biphasic effect of higher compression force stimulating the synthesis and secretion of S1P, whereas lower compression force reduced signaling in IDG-CM6 cementocytes. Using conditioned media from force-loaded cementocytes, we verified the cell-to-cell communication between cementocytes and osteoclasts and show that selective knockdown of S1PR1 and Rac1 plays a role in cementocyte-driven osteoclastogenesis via the S1P/S1PR1/Rac1 axis. Most importantly, the use of inhibitors of this axis reduced or prevented the pathological process of OIIRR. The intercellular communication mechanisms between cementocytes and osteoclasts may serve as a promising therapeutic target for OIIRR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The masticatory function is intricately linked to several factors like natural teeth count, occlusion, masticatory muscles, and tongue coordination. This study's goal was to formulate a comprehensive masticatory function model, considering sarcopenia's conceptual structure, and subsequently validate its measurement efficacy. DESIGN The study encompassed 753 participants (59.1 % women; mean age: 73.0 ± 5.1 years) from an urban community. The model amalgamated masseter muscle mass, occlusal force, and mixing ability. Based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 classification, participants were categorized into a multiple masticatory dysfunction (MMD) or severe MMD (S-MMD) group. Logistic regression analysis gauged the model's validity, using serum albumin levels and self-reported chewing difficulties as dependent variables. RESULTS Of the total, 61 (8.1 %) participants exhibited MMD, while 24 (3.2 %) had S-MMD. S-MMD was correlated with low serum albumin levels (odds ratio: 3.62; 95 % confidence interval: 1.07-12.29) and heightened self-reported chewing difficulties (odds ratio: 2.82; 95 % confidence interval: 1.09-7.28). CONCLUSIONS Our multiple masticatory function model offers a straightforward approach for assessing MMD. Furthermore, the study establishes a link between S-MMD, nutritional vulnerability, and self-reported chewing challenges, thus affirming the model's credibility.

Abstract
PURPOSE Removable partial dentures have a wide range of applications as missing tooth prostheses, and the denture design can be quite diverse. However, the factors affecting masticatory function remain unclear. We investigated the effect of denture design, especially the use of indirect retainers and major connectors, on masticatory function in patients with mandibular bilateral distal extension dentures. METHODS Fifty-three patients with mandibular Kennedy Class I and Eichner classification B occlusal support were included in this study. Masticatory performance (MP) was assessed using gummy jelly. For the dentures, the type of major connector (bar or apron), presence or absence of indirect retainers, number of rests, and number of artificial teeth were evaluated. The number of functional teeth and occlusal support, Eichner classification, maxillary denture usage, mandibular residual ridge height, and duration of denture use were also evaluated. The factors influencing on the MP were evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman's correlation coefficient, and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS MP was significantly higher when the major connector was bar-type or when there was an indirect retainer than with an apron-type or no indirect retainer. MP was positively correlated with the number of functional teeth, occlusal support, and number of rests. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the number of functional teeth and the presence or absence of an indirect retainer were factors that significantly influenced the MP. CONCLUSIONS An indirect retainer setting is useful for achieving good masticatory performance in mandibular bilateral distal extension dentures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of oral health on mortality have been reported; however, the association between mortality and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHQOL) is unknown. We investigated the effect of OHQOL on total mortality in a cohort consisting of dentists. METHODS In this cohort study, we analyzed data from the Longitudinal Evaluation of Multi-phasic, Odonatological and Nutritional Associations in Dentists study. We conducted a baseline survey of general and oral health factors. We called for 31,178 participants and collected responses from 10,256 participants. We followed up with 10,114 participants (mean age ± standard deviation, 52.4 ± 12.1 years; females, 8.9%) for 7.7 years, until March 2014, to determine the average total mortality. OHQOL was assessed using the General Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The total score was divided into quartiles (Q1 ≤ 51.6, Q2 = 51.7-56.7, Q3 = 56.8-59.9, and Q4 = 60.0), with higher GOHAI scores indicating better OHQOL (score range, 12-60). The association between OHQOL and total mortality was analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS We documented 460 deaths. Males with low GOHAI scores possessed a remarkably high risk of total mortality. The multivariate adjusted-hazard ratios (aHRs), were 1.93 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.07 - 3.48) for Q1, 1.69 (95% CI, 0.90 - 3.17) for Q2, and 0.65 (95% CI, 0.29 - 1.46) for Q3, relative to Q4 (trend p = 0.001). The aHRs in the multivariate model with all background variables were 1.69 (95% CI, 1.15-2.46) for Q1, 1.53 (95% CI, 1.04-2.27) for Q2, and 1.09 (95% CI, 0.71-1.70) for Q3, relative to Q4 (trend p = 0.001). In females, there was no significant association between the quartiles, in both the multivariate-adjusted model (trend p = 0.52) and multivariate-adjusted model with all background variables (trend p = 0.79). CONCLUSIONS A lower OHQOL indicated an increased risk of total mortality in dentists. OHQOL may be used as an indicator for selecting treatment plans and personalized care interventions, thus contributing to increased healthy life expectancy. Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed to determine which factors prevents the success of nutritional interventions for older family caregivers (FCs), in the form of individually tailored nutritional guidance. METHODS The present study focuses on the intervention group of FCs (n = 63) of a randomized controlled trial. Older FCs (≥60 years of age) receiving a care allowance for a home-living care recipient (≥65 years of age) were included in the present study, which focused on nutritional interventions via individually tailored nutritional guidance provided by a clinical nutritionist. The associations between changes in protein intake (3-day food record), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) scores, and plasma albumin and prealbumin concentrations, as well as associated factors, for the 6-month intervention period were analyzed using generalized estimating equations. RESULTS Intervention time, female sex, older age, higher net income, better hand grip strength, more teeth, and removable denture use were positively associated with an increase in protein intake. Fewer depressive symptoms were associated with a positive change in the MNA scores. Younger age, lower education level, lower body mass index (BMI), higher depressive symptoms, and fewer teeth were associated with an increase in plasma albumin concentration. Younger age, lower education, lower plasma concentration of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein at 6 months, lower Sense of Coherence (SOC) -13 score, fewer teeth, and absence of removable dentures were associated with an increase in plasma prealbumin concentration. CONCLUSION Older female FCs with a higher income, better hand grip strength, lower education, and lower SOC benefited most from individually tailored nutritional guidance. Depressive symptoms, oral health, and low-grade inflammation should be considered when providing nutritional guidance to older FCs. Abstract
This study aimed to clarify whether physical constitution affects masticatory function. A total of 251 healthy adults with completely natural dentition participated in this study. Height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) were used as parameters representing physical constitution, and the amount of glucose eluted from chewed gummy jelly and maximum occlusal force was used as parameter representing masticatory function. Handgrip strength was also measured. After comparing each parameter between male and female participants, the relationship between physical constitution and masticatory function was investigated in the combined (male and female) group, the male group, and the female group. The relationship between handgrip strength and masticatory function was also investigated. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed with masticatory function as the dependent variable and physical constitution as independent variable. The mean values of each parameter were significantly greater in the male group than in the female group. Regarding the relationship between physical constitution and occlusal force, the occlusal force tended to increase as the parameter value representing physical constitution increased, and a significant correlation was observed for all parameters. For masticatory performance, a significant correlation was observed in all parameters in the combined group, but no significant correlations were observed in the male group and in the female group. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that weight was significantly associated with occlusal force. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies revealed that tooth loss or edentulism was related to mortality. However, research in developing countries with large numbers of elderly populations is rare, and whether sex differences exist in this relationship is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the association between edentulism and 7-year all-cause mortality among older adults in China and whether sex differences existed. STUDY DESIGN This was a prospective cohort study. METHODS Data were from 2011 to 2018 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. A total of 6538 participants aged ≥60 years were included. Logistic models were adopted to estimate the risks of mortality according to edentulism. RESULTS The participants with edentulism at baseline were 20% more likely to die over 7 years after controlling for a set of covariates (odds ratio [OR] = 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.42). Moreover, edentulism was associated with a 35% higher odds of death among male participants (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.08-1.70), whereas a significant association was not found in female participants. CONCLUSIONS The findings demonstrated that baseline edentulism predicted all-cause mortality in Chinese older adults, and sex differences existed in this association. This study implied the importance of developing oral health education programs, incorporating dietary recommendations into dental care for edentulous patients, and expanding the coverage of dental services in the health insurance system to prevent edentulism and alleviate its negative outcomes for older adults.

Abstract
The belief about a possible association between the absence of one or more teeth and the presence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), although old, is still present among the dental class. Although evidence points to a lack of association between loss of posterior support and the presence of TMD, we do not have critical studies on the extent, quantity, or location of these losses. In this sense, this systematic review aims to investigate the association between tooth loss and the presence of TMD signs or diagnostic subgroups. Search strategies using a combination of keywords tooth loss and TMDs were performed in six databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Livivo, Lilacs, and Scopus) and gray literature from August to September 2020. Observational studies that investigated the association between tooth loss in TMD were considered. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Assessment Checklist for cross-sectional analytical studies, case-control, and cohort studies. Finally, the level of certainty measured by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was assessed. Six articles were included in the review according to the eligibility criteria. Of these, five had a high risk of bias and one had a moderate risk. Only one study showed an association between the loss of posterior teeth and the presence of joint sounds and joint pain, the others found no significant association with sign or TMD subgroups diagnostic.There is no scientific evidence to support the association between one or more tooth loss and the presence of TMD signs and symptoms or diagnostic subgroups.

Abstract
Oral function (OF) decline in older people is associated with nutritional deficiencies, which increases frailty risk and the need for nursing care. We investigated whether the delivery of an oral function improvement program on a tablet device was as effective as delivery through a paper-based program. We also investigated the association between tongue pressure (TP) improvement and nutritional status at the baseline. The participants involved in the study were 26 community-dwelling older people with low TP, <30 kPa, aged ≥65 years, who were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial for a month in Itoshima City, Fukuoka, Japan. Oral and physical functions and body composition were measured at the baseline and at follow-up. Two-way analysis of variance revealed that body mass index (p = 0.004) increased, and maximum masticatory performance (p = 0.010), maximum TP (p = 0.035), and oral diadochokinesis /pa/ and /ka/ (p = 0.009 and 0.017, respectively) improved in a month. Participants with higher TP improvement showed an increased intake of animal proteins at the baseline: fish (p = 0.022), meat (p = 0.029), and egg (p = 0.009). OF exercises for improving TP were associated with higher animal protein intake at the baseline. This study has been registered with the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN 000050292).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Nutritional status is a useful prognostic factor in gastric cancer patients. Since oral hypofunction may cause undernutrition, we cross-sectionally investigated whether the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) is affected by the number of remaining teeth, occlusal support status and denture use. MATERIALS AND METHODS The participants were 114 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer between April 2017 and March 2020. The stage of gastric cancer, body mass index, albumin level, total lymphocyte count, C-reactive protein level and GNRI were evaluated. The number of remaining teeth was also evaluated, and the occlusion state was determined based on the Eichner classification. The patients were divided into three main groups representing different occlusal states based on the Eichner index and were also categorised based on denture use. RESULTS The mean age ± standard deviation of the patients was 75.2 ± 5.5 years. The Eichner classification had a significant positive correlation with GNRI. Low GNRI was associated with a poor occlusal state in group C, while a higher GNRI was associated with a stable occlusal state in group A. However, the denture-related groups showed no significant differences in GNRI. CONCLUSION The GNRI was associated with the occlusal support level but not with denture use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Caries and periodontal disease may cause tooth losses and chewing difficulty, especially in the elderly. Ingesting poorly chewed food may delay gastric emptying and favour the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). OBJECTIVE This study investigated the association between masticatory dysfunction and GERD in the elderly from a rural area in southern Brazil. METHODS This census invited all 489 elderly from a city to participate. The study used a GERD symptoms questionnaire, followed by an oral examination. Masticatory dysfunction was analysed based on the chewing difficulty for some food groups. Tooth loss and chewing self-perception were also considered as exposure variables. Poisson regression determined the association among variables by calculating the prevalence ratio [PR (95% confidence interval)]. RESULTS The response rate was 93.1% (n = 455, average age of 70.9 years, 50.5% men). The prevalence of GERD in this population was 36.9%. GERD was associated with chewing difficulty for vegetables (PR = 1.54), meats (PR = 1.34) and cereals (PR = 1.43) but not with poor chewing self-perception (PR = 0.80) and tooth loss (PR = 1.22). GERD was also associated with xerostomia (PR = 1.63) and the female gender (PR = 1.35). CONCLUSION Elderly people from a rural area with a reduced number of teeth present chewing difficulty and a high prevalence of GERD, indicating an association between GERD and masticatory dysfunction.

Abstract
The association between oral frailty (OFr) and body action has been investigated, but its association with systemic function remains unclear. Therefore, this cross-sectional study examined the association between OFr with decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and renal function in residents of Shika town, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan aged ≥40 years. This study included 400 inhabitants. The OFr total score was assessed using three oral domains in the Kihon Checklist (a self-reported comprehensive health checklist), the number of teeth, and brushing frequency per day. Measurements were the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the osteo-sono assessment index (OSI). Using a two-way analysis of covariance (p = 0.002), significantly lower OSI was indicated in the eGFR < 60 and OFr group than in the eGFR of < 60 and non-OFr group after adjusting for age, body mass index, and drinking and smoking status as confounding factors. Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed this relationship (p = 0.006). Therefore, lower BMD seems to be associated with lower renal function only when accompanied by OFr. Further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
PURPOSE The study aimed to examine the association of self-rated chewing function, the number of teeth and periodontal status with metabolic syndrome. METHODS The participants were 11,119 adults aged 40-74 years who underwent specific health checkups, including an oral health examination, in 2018 in Japan. This study used the standard questions of the specific health checkups to obtain information on self-rated chewing function. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed with metabolic syndrome status as the dependent variable, and age, sex, lifestyle questions, self-rated chewing function, number of teeth, and periodontal status as the independent variables. RESULTS Number of teeth and periodontal status were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome after adjusting for confounding variables. Self-rated chewing function was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in the crude analysis, but not after adjustment for confounding variables. Both number of teeth and periodontal status were significantly associated with self-rated chewing function. CONCLUSION There was no significant direct association between self-rated chewing function and metabolic syndrome. Self-rated chewing function may be an indicator of poor oral condition that links to metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previously, the association between tooth loss and prognosis after esophagectomy was reported; however, the presence of periodontal disease has not been assessed. This study investigated the association between the degree of oral hygiene, as evaluated by tooth loss and periodontal disease, and the prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer. METHODS A total of 163 esophageal cancer patients who underwent surgery with perioperative oral care and examination were enrolled. We assessed the periodontal pocket depth for the presence of periodontal disease and established a periodontal pocket index, defined as the sum of the periodontal pocket depth of the remaining tooth divided by the total count of the remaining teeth. Patients were divided into three groups: Group A (tooth loss < 13 and periodontal pocket index < 3.67); Group B (tooth loss < 13 and periodontal pocket index ≥ 3.67); and Group C (tooth loss ≥ 13). Overall survival and cancer-specific survival were analyzed, and a multivariate analysis was performed. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the 5-year overall survival rates between the groups (A:B:C = 74.8%:62.8%:50.5%; p = 0.0098), but not in the 5-year cancer-specific survival rates (A:B:C = 80.2%:64.2%:62.2%; p = 0.0849). In multivariate analysis, oral hygiene (tooth loss < 13 and periodontal pocket index ≥ 3.67 + tooth loss ≥ 13; p = 0.041) was a significant independent poor prognostic factor for overall survival. CONCLUSIONS Oral evaluation, focusing on tooth loss and periodontal disease, is meaningful in predicting the long-term prognosis of postoperative esophageal cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth loss becomes more prevalent with age and increases risk of functional disability. However, the strength of tooth loss varies between individuals rather than a uniform loss with age. We aimed to evaluate tooth loss trajectories and their association with functional disability among older Chinese adults. METHODS We included 16,209 participants aged ≥65 years from five waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey 2002-2014. The number of teeth, Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and Instrumental ADL (IADL) were assessed at baseline and subsequently every three years. ADL disability and IADL disability were defined as needing any help in any item of the Katz scale and a modified Lawton's scale, respectively. A group-based trajectory model was used to determine tooth loss trajectories based on the self-reported number of teeth and generalized estimating equation models were used to explore associations of tooth loss trajectories with ADL disability and IADL disability. RESULTS This study identified four tooth loss trajectories, including Progressively Mild Loss (14.4%), Progressively Severe Loss (21.5%), Persistently Severe Loss (45.1%), and Edentulism (19.0%) among older Chinese adults. Compared with the Progressively Mild Loss trajectory, the Progressively Severe Loss (ADL disability: OR=1.45, 95% CI: 1.15-1.84; IADL disability: OR=1.71, 95% CI: 1.47-1.99), Persistently Severe Loss (ADL disability: OR=2.33, 95% CI:1.93-2.82; IADL disability: OR=3.29, 95% CI: 2.82-3.84) and Edentulism (ADL disability: OR=3.25, 95% CI: 2.58-4.09; IADL disability: OR=3.60, 95% CI: 2.93-4.42) trajectories were significantly associated with an increased risk of functional disability with adjustment for potential confounders. CONCLUSION Four distinct tooth loss trajectories were identified among older adults and those with severe tooth loss trajectories had an increased risk of functional disability than those with a mild loss trajectory.

Abstract
Antimicrobial surfactants contained in mouthrinse have excellent efficacy, but are not retained on the tooth surface (are rinsed away) due to their low water resistance and thus do not exhibit sustained antibacterial activity. We have developed a new coating method using graphene oxide (GO) that retains the surfactant on the tooth surface even after rinsing with water, thus providing a sustained antibacterial effect. Ultra-thin films of GO and an antimicrobial agent were prepared by (1) applying GO to the substrate surface, drying, and thoroughly rinsing with water to remove excess GO to form an ultrathin film (almost a monolayer, transparent) on the substrate surface, then (2) applying antimicrobial cationic surface active agents (CSAAs) on the GO film to form a composite coating film (GO/CSAA). GO/CSAA formation was verified by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ζ-potential and contact angle measurements. GO/CSAA was effective at inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens for up to 7 days of storage in water, and antibacterial activity was recovered by reapplication of the CSAA. Antibacterial GO/CSAA films were also formed on a tooth substrate. The results suggest that GO/CSAA coatings are effective in preventing oral infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the number of teeth in middle-aged and older individuals with intellectual disability and evaluated the related factors. METHODS A questionnaire survey on oral health was administered to 604 persons over 40 years old with intellectual disabilities in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The questionnaire designed for this study included items on diagnosis of disability, severity of intellectual disability and type of residence. As oral-health-related factors, the proxy-reported number of teeth, family dentist, regular dental check-ups, problems during dental treatment and tooth-brushing frequency were evaluated. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed using the proxy-reported number of teeth (≥20, 10-19 or 0-9) as the dependent variable, and the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of independent variables were calculated. In addition, linear regression analysis was performed using the proxy-reported number of teeth as the dependent variable. RESULTS In the multivariate multinomial logistic regression analysis, age, diagnosis of disability and type of residence were significantly associated with having 10-19 versus ≥20 teeth. Participants with autism spectrum disorder had a significantly lower OR for 10-19 teeth compared with those with intellectual disability [OR (95% CI): 0.49 (0.22-1.08)]. Age, diagnosis of disability, regular dental check-ups and tooth-brushing frequency were significantly associated with having 0-9 versus ≥20teeth. Participants with Down syndrome had a significantly higher OR for 0-9 teeth compared with those with intellectual disability [OR (95% CI): 3.17 (1.09-9.23)]. The ORs for 0-9 teeth of participants who did not attend regular dental check-ups and who brushed their teeth 1 time/day compared with ≥3 times/day were significantly high, and the OR (95% CI) was 2.37 (1.06-5.30) and 4.76 (1.09-20.77), respectively. [Corrections made on 22 August 2022, after first online publication: in the previous sentence, "who attend" has been changed to "who did not attend".] In the multivariate linear regression analysis, age, diagnosis of disability and regular dental check-ups were significantly associated with the proxy-reported number of teeth. The proxy-reported number of teeth was -0.42 less with each 1-year increase in age. With autism spectrum disorder, the proxy-reported number of teeth was 0.74 more compared with intellectual disability. In Down syndrome, the proxy-reported number of teeth was -0.93 less compared with intellectual disability. The proxy-reported number of teeth was -2.12 less for those who did not have regular dental check-ups. CONCLUSIONS The number of teeth in middle-aged and older individuals with intellectual disability was related to age and the type of disability. Regular dental visits may be effective at preventing tooth loss in middle-aged and older persons with intellectual disability.

Abstract
Objective In this study, age, endothelial function as flow‐mediated dilation (FMD), occlusal force, grip strength, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) were obtained. AGEs were measured as indicators of aging, while grip strength was measured as an indicator of muscle strength. This study aimed to explain the relationship between occlusal force and endothelial function and determine whether occlusal force can be a new indicator in community preventative care projects. Materials and Methods In 38 community‐dwelling women (age, 76.7 ± 5.7 years), the occlusal force and grip strength were measured, the endothelial function was evaluated by FMD, and AGEs were obtained. The relationship between occlusal force, measurement items, and factors were investigated independently related to endothelial function. Results There were significant correlations between occlusal force and grip strength (r = .54, p < .01). The degree of FMD was significantly associated with occlusal force (r = .60, p < .01) and grip strength (r = .35, p < .05) or increase in AGEs (r = −.37, p < .05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that occlusal force was significantly associated with the degree of FMD (p < .01). Conclusion Occlusal force can be an important indicator of endothelial function in the community‐dwelling elderly. This study may help understand the general health of the elderly in communities.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to develop a new chewing problem directory (CPD) and validate it with oral health indicators such as total occlusion force, number of natural and rehabilitated teeth (NRT), NRT posterior, natural teeth, natural teeth posterior, and dental status among Korean elders. Background Chewing problem is the main oral health problem in elders. However, there has been no validated tool using both subjective and objective assessment of chewing problem. Subjects and methods A total of 537 participants aged 65 years or more were randomly assigned into 2 subsamples: developing sample (n = 260) for developing and internally validating the new CPD as the 1st stage and confirmation sample (n = 277) for confirming validation of CPD as the 2nd stage. CPD was developed using three subjective questionnaires (general eating, chewing nuts, and chewing meat problem) and objective NRT. Periodontitis, age, sex, education, smoking, alcohol drinking, metabolic syndrome, and frailty were considered as confounders. Following the development of CPD, CPD was validated using multiple multivariable logistic regression after controlling for confounders in confirmation sample and total sample. Results The Cronbach’s alpha value for three subjective questionnaires of CPD was 0.87. Among oral health indicators, NRT (0–28) showed the highest impact association with subjective chewing problem score (partial r = − 0.276). The chewing problem from the new CPD was associated with all items of oral health indicators. The prevalence of chewing problems by CPD was 57.7% in developing sample. Elders with NRT ≤ 24, compared with those with NRT ≥ 25, showed the highest impact on chewing problems by new CPD (Odds Ratio = 7.3 in the confirmation sample and 5.04 in the total sample, p < 0.05) among oral health indicators. Conclusion This new CPD was developed as a valid tool to evaluate the chewing problem for Korean elders in dental clinics and community-based settings.

Abstract
Objectives With the rapidly aging world population, Japan has many older people with difficulties in maintaining oral health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary hardness score and performance of activities of daily living (ADL) of 90‐year‐old individuals in rural areas of Japan. Material and Methods A total of 236 individuals (64 men and 172 women) aged 90 years in Mitsugi town, Hiroshima, Japan, were included. Assessment of oral status and survey of ADL were performed. The association of ADL with dietary hardness score and the number of remaining teeth was determined. Results The mean dietary hardness score was 8.3 ± 2.6. Eighty individuals showed independence in ADL, whereas 156 individuals showed dependence. Logistic regression analysis, adjusted for potential confounding factors, showed that dietary hardness score was associated with ADL status but not the number of remaining teeth. Conclusion Our findings suggest that a low dietary hardness score is associated with dependence on ADL in 90‐year‐old individuals.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the surface adaptation and maximal biting force of CAD-CAM milled mandibular overdenture (CAD-CAM MOD) compared to conventional compression mold mandibular overdenture (CC MOD). Materials and Methods Ten completely edentulous subjects with persistent complaints of their complete mandibular dentures were received four dental implants in the anterior mandible. Three months after osseointegration, subjects were randomly received either conventional compression mold or CAD-CAM MOD in a crossover design. To assess tissue surface adaptation, the fitting surfaces of each denture base were scanned and placed on the reference master cast. Three and six months after each overdenture was inserted, clinical performance in the form of maximum biting force was evaluated. Results The results of this study indicated that the tissue surface adaptation of the CAD-CAM MOD bases was significantly better than the conventional (compression mold technique) processed bases where (P=0.0001). Regarding clinical performance (maximum biting force), the CAD-CAM MOD exhibited better clinical performance (P=0.0001). Conclusions In denture processing methods, the CAD-CAM overdenture delivered more precise adaption and clinical performance than the compression mold technique.

Abstract
Introduction Chewing well is essential for successful diet therapy and control of blood glucose level in patients with diabetes. In addition, long-term hyperglycemia is a risk factor for microvascular complications, which are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Hence, it is plausible that masticatory disorder may be relevant to diabetic microvascular complications which is caused by long-term hyperglycemia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether masticatory disorders are relevant to diabetic microvascular complications. Methods This cross-sectional study included 172 patients with type 2 diabetes who underwent educational hospitalization in the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetic Medicine, Hiroshima University Hospital, from April 2016 to March 2020. Masticatory efficiency was determined quantitatively by using the GLUCO SENSOR GS-Ⅱ. Multivariable linear regression models were constructed to examine which factors were related to masticatory efficiency. Statistical significance was defined as a two-sided p value of < 0.05. Results According to the bivariable analysis, masticatory efficiency was significantly correlated with duration of diabetes (p = 0. 049), number of remaining teeth (p < 0.0001), the number of moving teeth (p = 0.007) and condition of diabetic neuropathy (p < 0.0001). Moreover, the number of remaining teeth (p < 0.0001) and diabetic neuropathy (p = 0.007) remained significantly correlated with masticatory efficiency in the multivariable analysis. Conclusions For the first time, we demonstrated that patients with type 2 diabetes who developed diabetic neuropathy had significantly reduced masticatory efficiency. Effective mastication is an important factor in successful diet therapy for diabetes. To prevent the progression of diabetic complications, especially in patients with diabetic neuropathy, it may be necessary to combine individualized therapies from dentists and nutritionists with consideration for the level of masticatory dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and oral health indicators including dental status, total occlusion force (TOF), number of natural and rehabilitated teeth (NRT), number of natural teeth (NT), and to explore the effect modification on the association by gender among Korean elders. METHODS A total of 675 participants aged 65 or above recruited by a cluster-based stratified random sampling were included in this cross-sectional study. The 14-items Korean version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) was used to measure OHRQoL. The responses about OHIP were dichotomized by the cut-off point of 'fairly often' to determine the 'poor' versus 'fair' OHRQoL. Age, gender, education level, alcohol drinking, smoking, metabolic syndrome, frailty, and periodontitis were considered as confounders. Multiple multivariable logistic regression analyses were applied to assess the adjusted association between oral health indicators and OHRQoL. Gender stratified analysis was also applied to explore the effect modification of the association. RESULTS The prevalence of poor OHRQoL was 43.0%, which was higher in women, less-educated elders, alcohol non-drinkers and frailty elders (p < 0.05). Elders with poor OHRQoL also showed lower values of oral health indicators than elders with fair OHRQoL (p < 0.05). Those with NRT ≤ 24, NT ≤ 14, and TOF < 330 N increased the risk of poor OHRQoL by 2.3 times (OR = 2.26, confidence interval [CI] 1.54-3.31), 1.5 times (OR = 1.45, CI 1.02-2.07), and 1.5 times (OR = 1.47, CI 1.06-2.04), respectively. In women, the association of NRT ≤ 24 with poor OHRQoL increased from OR of 2.3 to OR of 2.4, while, in men, the association of TOF < 330 N with poor OHRQoL increased from OR of 1.5 to OR of 3.2. CONCLUSION Oral health indicators consisting of TOF, NRT, and NT were independently associated with poor OHRQoL among Korean elders. Gender modified the association of TOF and NRT. Preventive and/or curative management for keeping natural teeth and the rehabilitation of missing teeth to recover the occlusal force may be essential for reducing poor OHRQoL.

Abstract
Background Masticatory ability is an essential factor for sustaining quality of life and social and systemic well-being, particularly in elderly. This study aimed to reveal the association between subjective masticatory difficulty and skeletal bone mineral density (BMD). Methods Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2008 to 2011 were analyzed. This study included 13,092 Koreans (5656 males, 7436 females) over 50 years of age. Masticatory difficulty was evaluated based on a self-reported questionnaire. Areal BMD of the total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine as well as lean body mass were determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Data about the sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity, number of teeth present, sum of decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index and Community Periodontal Index (CPI) were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze associations between subjective masticatory difficulty and BMD, adjusting for the confounding covariates. Results Significant differences were observed in the areal BMD of the total hip, femoral neck, and lumbar spine as well as lean body mass accordance with the presence of subjective masticatory difficulty in both males and females. The number of teeth, DMFT, and CPI score did not show significant differences based on the presence of self-reported satisfaction of chewing performance in both males and females. Results from multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that the subjective masticatory difficulty showed significant interactions with skeletal BMD and the associations between masticatory satisfaction and BMD of the total hip and femoral neck were more prominent in females compared to those in males. Conclusions The skeletal BMD, particularly areal BMD of the femoral neck was significantly associated with subjective masticatory difficulty in elderly, especially in elder females.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Systemic inflammatory responses and nutritional status are useful prognostic factors in gastric cancer patients. Since oral hypofunction causes undernutrition, we cross-sectionally investigated whether nutritional biomarkers were affected by the occlusal supporting zone status.In 114 gastric cancer patients, the gastric cancer stage, body mass index, albumin levels, total lymphocyte counts, cholesterol levels, C-reactive protein levels, and 4 nutritional biomarkers - the Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, prognostic nutrition index (PNI), and controlling nutritional status (CONUT) - were evaluated. Oral conditions were assessed by determining the number of remaining teeth. The occlusal supporting status was based on the Eichner classification. Patients were assigned into 3 groups per their occlusal status, and mean values were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The mean age and body mass index were 72.2 ± 8.5 (50-89) years and 22.0 ± 3.6 (14.8-33.4), respectively. There were 42, 39, 23, and 10 patients in stages I, II, III, and IV, respectively. The mean number of remaining teeth was 18.1 ± 9.5. According to the Eichner classification, there were 45, 42, and 27 patients in groups A, B, and C, respectively. The GPS and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio values and CONUT frequencies between groups A and C were significantly different (P = .033, P = .00097, P = .04, respectively; Mann-Whitney U test). PNI values were lower in group C with poor occlusal support zones than in group A with stable occlusal support zones.Occlusal supporting zone reductions were undernutrition associated. Eichner Class C patients with few occlusal supporting zones had poor GPS, PNI, and CONUT values and were undernourished.

Abstract
We investigated how jelly is crushed and examined the relationship between tongue pressure and tongue food crushing ability among older adults requiring nursing home care. Seventy-two participants were instructed to freely crush the test foods soft jelly (SJ) and hard jelly (HJ). We visually evaluated the crushability of the test food and identified the intraoral tissues (active sites) used to crush the test food. The active sites were consistent for all participants for both SJ and HJ, and they included the maxillary and mandibular teeth in 41 participants, teeth and residual ridges in 15 participants, maxillary and mandibular residual ridges in 10 participants, and tongue and palate in six participants. Two participants failed to crush the SJ; the active sites in both participants were the tongue and palate. No participant using the tongue and palate as active sites could crush the HJ. Furthermore, 64 participants could crush the SJ and 23 could crush the HJ using the tongue and palate. The cutoff value of the tongue pressure for crushability of the HJ was 22.0 kPa. Assessing tongue pressure and intraoral active sites involved in food crushing could help determine an appropriate diet for older adults requiring nursing home care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to apply the frailty index (FI) to assess frailty status among Chinese centenarians and analyse its associated factors. DESIGN The study was a cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS The study included 1043 centenarians (742 females and 301 males) aged ≥100 years from the 2018 wave of the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. MEASUREMENTS All participants were assessed for frailty by the FI. Basic characteristics, including age, height, weight, calf circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference, sex, years of education, financial status, exercise, fall status, coresidence, smoking, alcohol consumption, number of natural teeth, denture use, toothache, and tooth brushing, were collected. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyse the associations between risk factors and frailty. RESULTS The average age of the participants was 102.06±2.55 years (range: 100-117 years). The FI ranged between 0.00 and 0.63. The mean FI for all participants was 0.27±0.13 (median 0.25; interquartile range 0.20-0.35). Participants were divided into quartiles. The number of natural teeth and denture use, coresidence, sex, exercise, and financial status showed significant associations with frailty classes (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that having ≤20 natural teeth without dentures (OR, 95% CI= 1.89(0.004-1.246), P<0.05), having ≤20 natural teeth with dentures (OR, 95% CI=2.21(0.158,1.432), P=0.015), living alone or in an institution (OR, 95% CI=1.68(0.182-0.849), P=0.002), lacking exercise (OR, 95% CI=2.54(0.616-1.246), P<0.001), having insufficient financial resources (OR, 95% CI=2.9(0.664-1.468), P<0.001), and being female (OR, 95% CI=1.47(0.137,0.634), P=0.002) were independent risk factors for frailty. CONCLUSION Chinese centenarian women are frailer than men. Having fewer natural teeth, living alone or in an institution, lacking exercise, and having insufficient financial resources were the factors associated with frailty among Chinese centenarians. Family conditions and healthy lifestyles may be important for frailty status in centenarians.

Abstract
The study aimed at identifying the socioeconomic, eating- and health-related limitations and their associations with food consumption among Polish women 60+ years old. Data on the frequency of consumption of fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat, poultry, fish, legumes, eggs, water and beverages industrially unsweetened were collected with the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA®) and were expressed in the number of servings consumed per day or week. Three indexes: the Socioeconomic Status Index (SESI), the Eating-related Limitations Score (E-LS) and the Health-related Limitations Score (H-LS) were developed and applied. SESI was created on the base of two variables: place of residence and the self-reported economic situation of household. E-LS included: difficulties with self-feeding, decrease in food intake due to digestive problems, chewing or swallowing difficulties, loss of appetite, decrease in the feeling the taste of food, and feeling satiety, whereas H-LS included: physical function, comorbidity, cognitive function, psychological stress and selected anthropometric measurements. A logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the socioeconomic, eating-, and health-related limitations of food consumption. Lower socioeconomic status (vs. higher) was associated with a lower chance of consuming fruit/vegetables ≥ 2 servings/day (OR = 0.25) or consuming dairy ≥ 1 serving/day (OR = 0.32). The existence of multiple E-LS limitations (vs. few) was associated with a lower chance of consuming fruit/vegetables ≥ 2 servings/day (OR = 0.72), consuming dairy ≥ 1 serving/day (OR = 0.55) or consuming water and beverages industrially unsweetened ≥6 cups/day (OR = 0.56). The existence of multiple H-LS limitations was associated with a lower chance of consuming fruit/vegetables ≥ 2 servings/day (OR = 0.79 per 1 H-LS point increase) or consuming dairy ≥ 1 serving/day (OR = 0.80 per 1 H-LS point increase). Limitations found in the studied women were related to insufficient consumption of selected groups of food, which can lead to malnutrition and dehydration. There is a need for food policy actions, including practical educational activities, to eliminate barriers in food consumption, and in turn to improve the nutritional and health status of older women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This cross-sectional study performed to clarify the relationship between periodontal disease and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) by introducing dental examinations into the annual health examinations conducted by Japanese companies, and to highlights the importance of a medical system that connects dental and medical professionals. METHODS A total of 1.022 Hitachi Ltd. employees were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. We examined correlations and odds ratios (ORs) between the dental and overall health of employees using stratification and multiple logistic regression analyses based on the periodontal health indicators, general health indicators, and occlusal force. RESULTS The adjusted OR of PPD for obesity (OR, 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-1.84; p = 0.009), IGT (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.00-2.20; p = 0.049), and COPD (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.02-1.88; p = 0.038) significantly differed. The adjusted OR of body mass index (OR, 1.28; 95% CI 1.15-1.42; p < 0.001), haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) (OR, 4.34; 95% CI, 1.89-9.98; p < 0.001), fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels (OR, 1.08; 95% CI 1.04-1.11; p < 0.001), postbronchodilator forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity ratio (%FEV1) (OR, 0.95; 95% CI 0.91-1.00; p = 0.031) and smoking (OR, 2.32; 95% CI 1.62-3.33; p < 0.001) for severe periodontal disease also significantly differed. Occlusal force was significantly reduced in employees aged 50-59 years compared to those aged 40-49 years. Both PPD, HbA1c, FBG levels were significantly associated with occlusal force among employees with moderate/severe periodontitis. PPD was significantly associated with occlusal force among employees with and moderate COPD, and ASCVD. %FEV1 was significantly associated with occlusal force among employees with IGT. CONCLUSIONS This cross-sectional study revealed mutual relationships among periodontal disease, NCDs, and occlusal force on Japanese corporate workers. We demonstrated that a comprehensive, regional healthcare system centred on annual integrated dental and physical health examinations in the workplace will benefit employees and positively impact corporate health insurance.

Abstract
Few studies have investigated the relationship between nutritional status and comprehensive assessment of oral hypofunction, especially protein intake-related sarcopenia. Thus, we explored these relationships in a large-scale cross-sectional cohort study using the seven-item evaluation for oral hypofunction and Diet History Questionnaire for nutritional assessment. We used the data from 1004 individuals who participated in the 2019 health survey of the residents of Tarumizu City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan for analysis. We found that individuals with oral hypofunction were significantly older with a lower skeletal muscle index. Although there were few foods that had a significant difference between the groups with and without oral hypofunction, the consumption of beans and meats was significantly lower in women and men in the oral hypofunction group, respectively. According to the lower limit of the tentative dietary goal defined in Japan, comprehensive evaluation of oral hypofunction was significantly and independently associated with protein intake in both men and women (odds ratio, 1.70; 95% confidence interval, 1.21-2.35). In conclusion, we found that oral hypofunction was associated with targeted protein intake for sarcopenia and frailty prevention in middle-aged and older community-dwelling adults. Comprehensive evaluation of oral function with intervention in cases of hypofunction could inform clinicians to better prevent sarcopenia.

Abstract
Dental caries and periodontal disease represent a health problem and a social cost for the entire population, and in particular for socio-economically disadvantaged individuals who are less resistant to disease. The aim of this review is to estimate the prevalence and severity of the two dental pathologies, caries and periodontal disease, in the different classes of socio-economically disadvantaged subjects and to understand which of them are most affected. A systematic search of the literature was performed in MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE and Web of Science after establishing a suitable search strategy for each database, using keywords related to socio-economically vulnerable classes and health outcomes. Socio-economically disadvantaged individuals are more susceptible to tooth decay and periodontal disease (with relative tooth loss) than non-vulnerable people. Additionally, when multiple vulnerabilities are combined in the same subject, these oral diseases worsen. There is no type of vulnerability more affected by caries and periodontitis than others, since overall they all have severe disease indices. The data from this systematic literature review might be useful for health policy makers looking to allocate more resources and services to socially disadvantaged individuals, resulting in making them more resilient to oral disease due to their social marginalization.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to develop a simple screening test for mastication, "the Sakiika (squid jerky) transport test (STT), which evaluates the vertical jaw movement coordinated with the lateral tongue movement during stage I transport, and investigate the possibility of its clinical application. METHODS The study included 73 people with dysphagia (mean age, 78.5 ± 7.8 years; median age, 79.0 years; interquartile range, 75.0-84.0). The STT evaluated the ability of a participant to transport a piece of squid jerky placed on the midline of the tongue to the molar region. The STT score was defined as the number of vertical jaw movements occurring as the tongue transported food to the molars. A cutoff value was set by comparing the STT scores with masticatory function evaluated via a videofluoroscopic swallowing study and with food texture evaluated using the Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS). RESULTS The STT scores counted by the two examiners had a κ coefficient of 0.79, indicating good reliability. The STT score was significantly associated with both the presence of masticatory movement ( p = 0.019) and food texture classified by FILS ( p = 0.032) at cutoff value of "3" (3 vertical movements). The STT showed 62% sensitivity and 75% specificity for masticatory movements. CONCLUSION The STT could be a useful screening test to assess the presence or absence of food transportation to the molars for mastication in older patients with dysphagia. In addition, the STT could be useful in identifying the need to modify food texture to meet functions.

Abstract
Inadequate and poor quality of diet and malnutrition are common and associated with adverse health outcomes, including morbidity and mortality, among older persons. This review aimed to establish the latest evidence from studies investigating the association between oral function and nutrition among older adults. An electronic search of MEDLINE using PubMed for literature published in English between March 2018 and March 2021 was conducted, and 27 papers were identified. The selected studies comprised 23 observational studies (17 cross-sectional and 6 longitudinal studies) and 4 interventional studies. Most of the observational studies demonstrated the following associations in older adults: older adults with poor oral function are likely to have poorer dietary intake and poorer nutritional status, and malnourished older adults are likely to have poorer oral function. The results of the intervention studies demonstrated that the combination of prosthodontic treatment and dietary counseling is more effective for improving dietary intake and nutritional status in older persons with tooth loss than the prosthodontic treatment alone. Our review confirmed that a relationship exists between oral function and nutrition and revealed the need for additional high-quality studies investigating comprehensive oral function, rather than a single aspect of oral function, with regard to nutritional status.

Abstract
Background: Removable partial dentures are a frequently used prosthetic treatment in the elderly population, but different types or RPDs might guarantee different chewing capabilities. In many studies, the relationship between chewing and aging has been reported and it has been shown that efficient chewing can improve the overall quality of life. Objectives: In the present study, the relationship between maximum bite force (MBF) and RPDs was studied. A relationship between the body mass index (BMI) and the type of prosthesis was also analyzed. Methods: 240 elderly patients, 120 males and 120 females, with bilateral posterior edentulism (class 1 of Kennedy classification) who had been wearing an RPD for at least a year, were recruited. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1: male (n = 60) and female (n = 60) patients with bilateral edentulous areas located posterior to the remaining natural teeth and natural teeth in the opposite dental arch. Group 2: male (n = 60) and female (n = 60) patients with maxillary and mandibular bilateral edentulous areas located posterior to the remaining natural teeth. Their Body Mass Index (BMI) and Maximum bite force (MBF) were measured and compared according to the material and design of their RPD. Results: In both Groups, patients wearing cobalt-chrome alloy RPDs (Co-Cr-RPD) (Group 1: 20.25 ± 6.7 MBF, p < 0.001; Group 2: 16.0 ± 5.7 MBF, p < 0.001) had an increased MBF when compared to polymethylmethacrylate RPD (PMMA-RPD) (Group 1: 12.9 ± 3.36 MBF; Group 2: 10.4 + 2.8 MBF), and Valplast RPD (V-RPD) (Group 1: 14.3 ± 4.7 MBF; Group 2: 11.3 ± 3.4 MBF) users. There were no significant differences in bite force between patients wearing PMMA-RPD and V- RPD in both Groups. Patients in Group 2 showed a lower MBF than those in Group 1 (Group 1: 16.05 ± 6.13 MBF; Group 2: 12.6 ± 4.84 MBF; p < 0.001). Conclusions: A reduction in chewing force can lead to choosing softer foods for nutrition, which can lead to an increase in BMI. Our results show that only CoCr-RPD wearers were able to chew consistent food, whereas PMMA- RPD and V-RPD, due to the properties of the materials, their instability, and the possibility of causing pain during mastication, determined a limitation in the choice of food for many of the participants.

Abstract
Introduction Fall-related injuries are prevalent in older patients and often lead to increased morbidity, medication, and impaired functions. We studied older trauma patients with the aim to describe their oral health in comparison to morbidity and medication. Material and Methods The study included 198 patients, ≥65 years, admitted with an orthopedic trauma. Oral examinations included number of natural teeth, dental implants, missing, decayed and restored teeth, root remnants, and pocket depth. Data on comorbidities and medication were assembled. Statistical analyses were carried out with logistic regression models, adjusted for age, gender, comorbidity, and polypharmacy. Results Overall, 198 patients participated, 71% women, mean age 81 years (±7.9), 85% resided in their own homes, 86% had hip fractures. Chronic diseases and drug use were present in 98.9%, a mean of 6.67 in Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), 40% heart diseases, 17% diabetes, and 14% dementia. Ninety-one percent were dentate (181), mean number of teeth 19.2 (±6.5), 24% had decayed teeth, 97% filled teeth, 44% <20 teeth, and 26% oral dryness. DFT (decayed, filled teeth) over mean were identified in patients with diabetes (p=0.037), COPD (p=0.048), polypharmacy (p=0.011), diuretics (p=0.007), and inhalation drugs (p=0.032). Use of ≥2 strong anticholinergic drugs were observed in patients with <20 teeth and DFT over mean (p=0.004, 0.003). Adjusted for age, gender, CCI, and polypharmacy. Conclusion The study showed that impaired oral health was prevalent in older trauma patients and that negative effects on oral health were significantly associated with chronic diseases and drug use. The results emphasize the importance of identifying orthogeriatric patients with oral health problems and to stress the necessity to uphold good oral care during a period when functional decline can be expected.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate whether lacunar infarcts can be predicted from occlusal support and periodontal stage on images. METHODS Seventy patients with lacunar infarcts and 300 participants without lacunar infarcts who underwent cerebral checkups at our university hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Lacunar infarcts were assessed using magnetic resonance images by a neuroradiologist. The number of teeth, occlusal support, and severity of radiographic bone loss (RBL) were evaluated using computed tomography. Occlusal support was classified according to the Eichner classification. Additionally, patient characteristics were investigated using medical charts and blood test reports. Records of clinical periodontal parameters, such as clinical attachment loss and bleeding on probing, were also evaluated. RESULTS The severity of RBL and Eichner classification in patients with lacunar infarcts was significantly higher than that in individuals without lacunar infarcts (P<.01). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the cut-off values for predicting lacunar infarct were ≥ III in the severity of RBL and ≥B1 in the Eichner classification. The corresponding areas under the curve were 0.75 and 0.70, respectively. In multivariate analysis, the factors affecting the severity of RBL (≥ III) (odds ratio [OR], 8.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.1-16.3; P ‹.001), and Eichner classification ( ≥B1) (OR, 1.9; 95% CI, 0.86-4.1; P ‹.05) were significantly associated with the occurrence of lacun ar infarcts. CONCLUSIONS The severity of RBL and the Eichner classification may be helpful in predicting lacunar infarcts. Therefore, proper periodontal treatment and prosthodontic rehabilitation of missing teeth may prevent lacunar infarcts.

Abstract
Background Physical frailty is related to adverse outcomes, and poor oral health has been linked to malnourishment. Subjective measures of oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) have been used as indicators of the oral health problems of older adults, and they have been associated with malnourishment. This study aimed to assess OHRQoL's association with physical frailty. Methods Cross‐sectional study was conducted using data from the Nagasaki Islands Study that enrolled participants aged ≥60 years at Japanese national medical check‐ups from 2014 to 2019. Physical frailty phenotype criteria were determined using the modified Fried frailty phenotype model. OHRQoL was assessed using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). Dentists conducted clinical dental examinations. Simple correlation and linear regression analyses were performed to investigate the associations of number of physical frailty phenotype criteria with GOHAI and other oral health indicators. Results Among 1341 participants with a mean age of 72 years, GOHAI score was significantly associated with number of physical frailty phenotype criteria (B = −0.01, 95% confidence interval: −0.02 to −0.01, p < 0.001). The association remained significant after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, history of hypertension, history of diabetes mellitus, smoking status, Kessler‐6 score, and number of remaining teeth. Conclusions Oral health‐related quality of life was associated with physical frailty in Japanese community‐dwelling older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association of masticatory function with prosthetic rehabilitation status and dental prosthesis functionality in nursing home residents. BACKGROUND Prosthetic rehabilitation status and dental prosthesis functionality may adversely affect mastication of older people, and this relationship is underestimated in nursing home residents. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 179 nursing home residents who used dental prostheses [mean (SD) age: 78.9 (9.0) years]. Masticatory function data were determined by assessing (a) masticatory performance using two-colour chewing gum, and (b) swallowing thresholds by counting the number of peanut chewing cycles. Older adults were categorised as: (1) using dental prostheses in both jaws (n = 100) and (2) partially dentate using removable partial dental prostheses (RPDPs) or complete dentures (CDs) in only one jaw (n = 41), or (3) edentulous using CD in only one jaw (n = 38). Stability, retention, occlusion, vertical dimension and defects were considered in assessing dental prosthesis functionality. RESULTS Greater variance of hue (VOH) of the chewing gum and lower swallowing thresholds (worse masticatory function) was associated with edentulous using CD in only one jaw. Older adults wearing dental prostheses with poor occlusion and vertical dimensions presented worse masticatory function. Dental prosthesis stability was associated with lower VOH values. Higher number of chewing cycles while eating peanuts was associated with non-broken dental prosthesis use. CONCLUSION Edentulous participants using CD in only one jaw and non-functional dental prosthesis use negatively affect the masticatory function of nursing home residents.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clarify the presence or absence of gender differences in masticatory function in elderly adults with completely natural dentition. Fifty-six elderly adults aged 65 years and older (elderly group) and 60 young adults in their 20-40 s (young group) with natural dentition participated in this study. The maximum occlusal force on the habitual chewing side was measured using dental prescale. Next, the amount of glucose extraction when subjects chewed a gummy jelly on their habitual chewing side for 20 s was measured. The maximum occlusal force and masticatory performance in the elderly and young groups were compared between males and females. The relationship between the maximum occlusal force and masticatory performance was also investigated. The maximum occlusal force in the elderly and young groups was larger in males than in females, and the difference was significant. The amount of glucose extraction in the elderly and young groups was higher in males than in females, and the difference was significant. Regarding the relationship between the maximum occlusal force and the amount of glucose extraction, there was a significant positive correlation. These results suggest that there are gender differences in the masticatory function of the elderly adults with completely natural dentition, and these differences need to be noted in the evaluation of masticatory function.
