Flipped classroom improves student learning in health professions education: a meta-analysis

LGBTQ+ health education for medical students in the United States: a narrative literature review

INTRODUCTION

People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and other sexual/gender minorities (LGBTQ+) may experience discrimination when seeking healthcare. Medical students should be trained in inclusive and affirming care for LGBTQ+ patients. This narrative literature review explores the landscape of interventions and evaluations related to LGBTQ+ health content taught in medical schools in the USA and suggests strategies for further curriculum development.

METHODS

PubMed, ERIC, and Education Research Complete databases were systematically searched for peer-reviewed articles on LGBTQ+ health in medical student education in the USA published between 1 January 2011-6 February 2023. Articles were screened for eligibility and data was abstracted from all eligible articles. Data abstraction included the type of intervention or evaluation, sample population and size, and key outcomes.

RESULTS

One hundred thirty-four articles met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. This includes 6 (4.5%) that evaluate existing curriculum, 77 (57.5%) study the impact of curriculum components and interventions, 36 (26.9%) evaluate student knowledge and learning experiences, and 15 (11.2%) describe the development of broad learning objectives and curriculum. Eight studies identified student knowledge gaps related to gender identity and affirming care and these topics were covered in 34 curriculum interventions.

CONCLUSION

Medical student education is important to address health disparities faced by the LGBTQ+ community, and has been an increasingly studied topic in the USA. A variety of curriculum interventions at single institutions show promise in enhancing student knowledge and training in LGBTQ+ health. Despite this, multiple studies indicate that students report inadequate education on certain topics with limitations in their knowledge and preparedness to care for LGBTQ+ patients, particularly transgender and gender diverse patients. Additional integration of LGBTQ+ curriculum content in areas of perceived deficits could help better prepare future physicians to care for LGBTQ+ patients and populations.

Using a flipped classroom in a veterinary systems physiology course increases student performance on basic knowledge and clinical applicability questions

Flipped classrooms are being utilized more frequently in biomedical education to provide more active learning opportunities to students although there are mixed results on the benefits of the flipped classroom in biomedical education. In this study, the effects of using a flipped classroom with case-based learning in the endocrine section of a first-year veterinary-integrated histology and physiology course were investigated. Results demonstrated that the flipped classroom improved performance on the endocrine section exam by 15.9% (Cohen's d = 1.08; P < 0.001) with improvements on both clinically applicable and basic knowledge questions. Student satisfaction with the flipped classroom was also investigated. Students reported high satisfaction with the in-class case-based learning opportunities but lower satisfaction with the asynchronous content delivery and the time required outside of class. Student perceptions of the flipped classroom were measured again after being exposed to the results of the flipped classroom on student learning. After seeing the results, students were significantly more likely to value the time spent in the flipped classroom and to desire more opportunities for flipped classrooms in the future.NEW & NOTEWORTHY A flipped classroom using case-based learning can significantly improve student performance in a veterinary physiology course with the largest gains going to lower performing students. Student perception of the flipped classroom can be improved by showing students data on the improvement in performance on examinations.

A partially flipped physiology classroom improves the deep learning approach of medical students

This study aimed to compare the impact of the partially flipped physiology classroom (PFC) and the traditional lecture-based classroom (TLC) on students' learning approaches. The study was conducted over 5 mo at Xiangya School of Medicine from February to July 2022 and comprised 71 students majoring in clinical medicine. The experimental group (n = 32) received PFC teaching, whereas the control group (n = 39) received TLC. The Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) was used to assess the impact of different teaching methods on students' learning approaches. After the PFC, students got significantly higher scores on deep learning approach (Z = -3.133, P < 0.05). Conversely, after the TLC students showed significantly higher scores on surface learning approach (Z = -2.259, P < 0.05). After the course, students in the PFC group scored significantly higher in deep learning strategy than those in the TLC group (Z = -2.196, P < 0.05). The PFC model had a positive impact on deep learning motive and strategy, leading to an improvement in the deep approach, which is beneficial for the long-term development of students. In contrast, the TLC model only improved the surface learning approach. The study implies that educators should consider implementing PFC to enhance students' learning approaches.NEW & NOTEWORTHY In this article, we compare the impact of the partially flipped classroom (PFC) and the traditional lecture classroom (TLC) in a physiology course on medical students' learning approaches. We found that the PFC benefited students by significantly enhancing their deep learning motive, strategy, and approach, which was good for them. However, the TLC model only improved the surface learning motive and approach.

Developing education in environmental health and medicine focusing on neurology: Initiatives in Sweden (the UPRISE model), France, and Turkey

BACKGROUND

The role of environmental factors in neurological disorders constitutes a topic of increasing importance. Teaching in European universities should expand and update this field gaining future health professionals including adjacent disciplines.

AIM

To describe recent efforts to create courses that cover crucial interdisciplinary content that we believe should be included in modern education, and to adapt modern pedagogic strategies.

METHODS

In collaboration with RISE (Rencontres Internationales Santé Environnement), elective courses focused on Environmental Health and Medicine (EHM) were developed, in France, Sweden, and Turkey. The courses combined classic teaching methods and new pedagogic and digital solutions to create environment-related health awareness and facilitate future interprofessional collaboration in this field.

RESULTS

UPRISE is an innovative elective course introduced in 2020 in Sweden's Uppsala University with the participation of lecturers from several countries and aim to recruit students from different universities. A total of 45, mainly female students (68%), participated in the course. In Strasbourg, France, a novel course on environmental medicine was held in 2019-2023 and examined 90 students, of which more than half were female. Nine graduate nurse students in Turkey attended ten seminar series focused on EHM. Overall, students expressed satisfaction with the courses.

CONCLUSIONS

This European project for courses in higher education arising from RISE was met with appreciation and challenges from academic institutions. However, due to considerable efforts to introduce the EHM concept, a unique compulsory course for all medical students in the second year of training started in 2023 in all French medical faculties. In 2023, UPRISE was integrated into ENLIGHT, the European University Network to promote equitable quality of Life, sustainability, and Global engagement through Higher education Transformation.

Inverted Classroom Teaching of Physiology in Basic Medical Education: Bibliometric Visual Analysis

Background

Over the last decade, there has been growing interest in inverted classroom teaching (ICT) and its various forms within the education sector. Physiology is a core course that bridges basic and clinical medicine, and ICT in physiology has been sporadically practiced to different extents globally. However, students' and teachers' responses and feedback to ICT in physiology are diverse, and the effectiveness of a modified ICT model integrated into regular teaching practice in physiology courses is difficult to assess objectively and quantitatively.

Objective

This study aimed to explore the current status and development direction of ICT in physiology in basic medical education using bibliometric visual analysis of the related literature.

Methods

A bibliometric analysis of the ICT-related literature in physiology published between 2000 and 2023 was performed using CiteSpace, a bibliometric visualization tool, based on the Web of Science database. Moreover, an in-depth review was performed to summarize the application of ICT in physiology courses worldwide, along with identification of research hot spots and development trends.

Results

A total of 42 studies were included for this bibliometric analysis, with the year 2013 marking the commencement of the field. University staff and doctors working at affiliated hospitals represent the core authors of this field, with several research teams forming cooperative relationships and developing research networks. The development of ICT in physiology could be divided into several stages: the introduction stage (2013-2014), extensive practice stage (2015-2019), and modification and growth stage (2020-2023). Gopalan C is the author with the highest citation count of 5 cited publications and has published 14 relevant papers since 2016, with a significant surge from 2019 to 2022. Author collaboration is generally limited in this field, and most academic work has been conducted in independent teams, with minimal cross-team communication. Authors from the United States published the highest number of papers related to ICT in physiology (18 in total, accounting for over 43% of the total papers), and their intermediary centrality was 0.24, indicating strong connections both within the country and internationally. Chinese authors ranked second, publishing 8 papers in the field, although their intermediary centrality was only 0.02, suggesting limited international influence and lower overall research quality. The topics of ICT in physiology research have been multifaceted, covering active learning, autonomous learning, student performance, teaching effect, blended teaching, and others.

Conclusions

This bibliometric analysis and literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the history, development process, and future direction of the field of ICT in physiology. These findings can help to strengthen academic exchange and cooperation internationally, while promoting the diversification and effectiveness of ICT in physiology through building academic communities to jointly train emerging medical talents.

Flipped Classroom Based on Outcomes-Based Education Improves Student Engagement and Clinical Analysis Competence in Undergraduates Ophthalmology Clerkship

Objective

To investigate the effectiveness of flipped classrooms (FC) based on outcomes-based education (OBE) on clinical ophthalmology clerkships.

Methods

Ninety-nine undergraduates were non-randomly assigned to the FC based on the OBE (FC-OBE) group or traditional lecture (TL) group in the ophthalmology clerkship. Pre- and post-tests were performed to assess student learning outcomes. Anonymous questionnaires were collected to compare students' attitudes and classroom engagements between the two groups.

Results

More participants agreed FC-OBE was helpful in developing teamwork ability and knowing the work standard. Teaching staff in the FC-OBE classroom received higher evaluations. More participants in the FC-OBE group had higher classroom engagement in skills and emotions than in the TL group. The post-class test scores, mainly case analysis scores were higher in the FC-OBE group than in the TL group.

Conclusion

FC-OBE classroom improves student engagement and clinical analysis competence in undergraduate ophthalmology clerkship.

Construction and application of procedural pathways combined with information management in nursing staff skills training system

OBJECTIVE

To explore the application effect of procedural pathways combined with information management in the construction of nursing staff skills training system.

METHODS

This was a quasi-experimental study with a control group and an experimental group. A total of 300 newly admitted nurses or nurses who required training within three years of admission were selected as the experimental group, and 267 nurses who were trained in the same hospital during the same period in 2020 were selected as the control group. The experimental group received skills training using a system that combines procedural pathways with information management, while the control group received traditional teaching mode. The outcome measures included theoretical score, operation score, nurse competency, patient satisfaction, and nursing-related adverse events. The data were analyzed using t-test, chi-square test, and rank-sum test.

RESULTS

The experimental group had higher scores in theoretical assessment, skills assessment, nurse competency, and patient satisfaction, and lower incidence of nursing-related adverse events than the control group (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The strategy of procedural pathways combined with information management provides a new perspective and method for nursing operation skills training, effectively improves clinical nursing quality and ensures patient safety.

Comparison of blended learning and traditional lecture method on learning outcomes in the evidence-based medicine course: a comparative study

BACKGROUND

Blended learning comprised with flipped classroom (FC) and "internet plus" is a new learning strategy that reverses the position of teacher and students in class, and provides abundant learning resources before and after class. This study aimed to assess the impact of blended learning on learning outcomes in evidence-based medicine course, and compare with traditional learning method.

METHODS

The participants of the two groups were from two difference cohorts in Air force medical university in China. The two groups toke the same pre-test before class and then were given the teaching of same chapters of evidence-based medicine with two different learning strategy. In the blended learning group, the participants were required to create a debriefing slide about their learning outcomes and the answers of questions given in advance after study the learning material sent by teacher a week before class, and the teacher gave a detailed summary based on the common problems, and distributed multimedia resources for review. After the experiment was carried out, learning outcomes including mastering knowledge, learning satisfaction, and self-evaluation were compared.

RESULTS

37 and 39 participants were enrolled to blended learning and traditional learning groups, respectively, and no statistically significant difference were found in baseline information and pre-test grades. Statistically significant differences were found in learning outcomes including post-test score (t = 2.90, p = 0.005), changes of scores between pre-test and post-test (t = 2.49, p = 0.022), learning satisfaction (t = 12.41, p = 0.001), and self-evaluation of the two groups (t = 7.82, p = 0.001). Especially, the changes of scores between pre-test and post-test of blended learning and traditional learning groups were 4.05 (4.26), and 2.00 (2.85), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

This study showed that compared with traditional learning strategy, blended learning can effectively enhanced participants' acquisition of knowledge, learning satisfaction, and self-evaluation in evidence-based medicine. Using blended learning method including "internet plus" and flipped classroom is recommended in the teaching of evidence-based medicine course.

Team-, case-, lecture- and evidence-based learning in medical postgraduates training

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of team-, case-, lecture-, and evidence-based learning (TCLEBL) methods in cultivating students' clinical and research abilities, as compared to traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) approaches.

METHODS

Forty-one medical postgraduates were divided into two groups, a TCLEBL group and an LBL group. Teaching effectiveness was evaluated through student- and teacher-feedback questionnaires, scores from theoretical examinations and written literature reviews, and student learning burdens.

RESULTS

Compared to the LBL approach, both teachers and students were more satisfied with the TCLEBL model (p < 0.001 for both teachers and students). The TCLEBL group performed significantly higher on the theory test compared to the LBL group (p = 0.009). There were significant differences between the LBL and TCLEBL groups, respectively, in terms of literature review and citations (12.683 ± 2.207 vs. 16.302 ± 1.095, p < 0.001), argument and perspective (12.55 ± 1.572 vs. 16.333 ± 1.354, p < 0.001), comprehensiveness of content (13.3 ± 2.268 vs. 16.683 ± 1.344, p < 0.001), and scientific rigor and accuracy (10.317 ± 1.167 vs. 12.746 ± 0.706, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the total extracurricular time expended between the two groups (323.75 ± 30.987 min vs. 322.619 ± 24.679 min, respectively for LBL vs. TCLEBL groups, p = 0.898).

CONCLUSIONS

TCLEBL is an effective teaching method that cultivates students' clinical and research abilities.

Fostering clinical reasoning ability in preclinical students through an illness script worksheet approach in flipped learning: a quasi-experimental study

BACKGROUND

The consensus that clinical reasoning should be explicitly addressed throughout medical training is increasing; however, studies on specific teaching methods, particularly, for preclinical students, are lacking. This study investigated the effects of an illness script worksheet approach in flipped learning on the development of clinical reasoning abilities in preclinical students. It also explored whether the impact of this intervention differed depending on clinical reasoning ability after dividing the students into high and low groups based on their pre-diagnostic thinking inventory (DTI) scores.

METHODS

This study used a one-group pre-post test design and convenience sampling. Forty-two second-year medical students were invited to participate in this study. The course, "clinical reasoning method," was redesigned as an illness script worksheet approach in flipped learning. The course was an eight-week long program. The students met once or twice per week with a different professor each time and engaged with 15 clinical cases in small groups in one classroom. Each time, one professor facilitated seven groups in a single classroom. The effectiveness of the intervention was measured using DTI before and after the intervention. A learning experience survey was conducted with post-DTI assessment.

RESULTS

Thirty-six students participated in the survey and their data were analyzed. The mean pre-DTI score was 170.4, and the mean post-DTI score was 185.2, indicating an 8.68% increase (p < .001). Significant differences were also found in both high and low groups between the pre- and post-DTI assessments. However, the low group improved much more than the high group and exhibited a significant increase in one of the DTI subscales as well. The overall average score on the learning experience survey was 3.11 out of 4.

CONCLUSION

The findings indicated that the intervention was an effective instructional method for the development of clinical reasoning in preclinical students and was more beneficial for students with a low level of clinical reasoning ability. This study demonstrated that the intervention can be a feasible and scalable method to effectively and efficiently train clinical reasoning in preclinical students in a classroom.

Exploring the responses of preclinical medical students and professors to flipped learning for the development of clinical reasoning

PURPOSE

This study developed and implemented case-based flipped learning using illness script worksheets and investigated the responses of preclinical students and professors to the intervention in terms of its effectiveness, design, and implementation.

METHODS

The study was conducted at a medical school in Korea, where the "clinical reasoning method" course, originally a lecture-oriented course, was redesigned into a flipped learning. In total, 42 second-year medical students and 15 professors participated in this course. After the class, online surveys were conducted, and a focus group interview was held with seven students to explore the students' experiences in more detail.

RESULTS

In total, 37 students and seven professors participated in the survey. The mean score for all items is 3.12/4 for the student survey and 3.43/4 for the professor survey. The focus group interview results were categorized as the beneficial aspects and challenges for the development of clinical reasoning.

CONCLUSION

The findings indicated that their responses to the intervention were generally positive, and it is thought to be an effective instructional method for fostering clinical reasoning skills in preclinical medical students.

Abortion Education for Medical Students in an Era of Increased Abortion Restrictions

Following the Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health in June 2022, many states restricted or banned abortion. Medical educators have focused on how this change impacts abortion training for residents, but schools must also adapt undergraduate medical education. Medical schools provide the foundation for future physicians' knowledge and attitudes on abortion. Comprehensive, high-quality abortion education for all medical students is essential for the future of abortion care. Here, we present how education champions can lead curricular improvements in abortion education in the preclinical, clerkship, and postclerkship phases of undergraduate medical education.

Teaching diagnostic radiology to radiology majors: Implementation and evaluation of a flipped classroom model

PURPOSE

Radiology instruction focuses on cultivating medical students' diagnostic thinking skills and practical competence, and lecture-based learning (LBL) is the most commonly used teaching approach. While fact-based, this type of traditional instruction is often non-engaging, leading to a shift toward student-centered models, one of which is the flipped classroom (FC). However, studies involving a comprehensive evaluation of students' experiences using the FC approach and its effects on their learning are lacking. Therefore, this study analyzed the teaching efficacy of the FC approach based on data of large groups of radiology students, accumulated over time.

METHODS

Data from 636 medical radiology students taught using the FC and LBL models from 2012 to 2021 were retrospectively collected and analyzed.

RESULTS

The test scores of the FC group were significantly higher than those of the LBL group, and improvements in learning initiative and learning ability were notably higher in the FC than in the LBL group. The two groups showed no significant difference in the critical thinking disposition indicator, and the proportion of students with positive critical thinking tendencies was higher in the FC than in the LBL group. The academic and social self-perception scores of the FC group were significantly higher than those of the LBL group, and there was a significant difference in Kolb's learning style.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on evidence of completing pre-, in-, and after-class work, the FC approach improved students' academic performance, learning initiative, diagnostic ability, and satisfaction with learning and the teaching institution. Our findings suggest that FC instruction promotes students' assimilation and convergence of learning styles, and cultivates positive critical thinking.

Effects of flipped classroom teaching in anaesthesiology residents: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

The flipped classroom teaching model is widely used in medical education and is indicated to be better than traditional lecture approaches in many medical specialties. Emerging studies have evaluated the effects of the flipped classroom teaching model on anaesthesiology residents. This protocol aims to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether the flipped classroom teaching model is superior to traditional teaching methods for anaesthesiology residents.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

Seven databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data and the VIP database, will be systematically searched from their inception to 1 June 2024. Randomised controlled trials that compared the effects of flipped classrooms versus traditional teaching methods in anaesthesiology residents will be included. The primary outcome will be the theoretical knowledge score. The secondary outcomes will include skill scores and the proportion of anaesthesiology residents who preferred the flipped classroom model. RevMan V.5.4 software will be used to perform the statistical analysis. The Grading of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach will assess the quality of evidence.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethical approval is not applicable to this protocol. The results of this study will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

Nursing students' experiences of flipped classroom teaching method in higher education: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

During the COVID-19 pandemic face-to-face activities were suspended, boosting the delivery of online teaching. As students returned to campuses, the delivery of active learning teaching methods followed a blended learning style. The flipped classroom, which is a student-centred approach, appears to be an effective teaching method, generating improved learning outcomes. No systematic review has so far explored students' experiences of this teaching method - a knowledge gap that this review aims to address.

METHODS

Studies published between 2012 and 2023 were identified from seven databases. The JBI critical appraisal tool was adopted to select high-quality studies and add credibility. Following extraction of qualitative data, meta-aggregation was used to identify synthesised findings.

RESULTS

The findings were aggregated into seven categories. Based on meaning similarity, three synthesised findings were identified to answer the research question on how nursing students experience the flipped classroom method.

CONCLUSION

Several factors affect the student experience. Although variables are interrelated and complex to analyse, this approach is a valuable teaching method, positively experienced by students with the potential to improve engagement and learning outcomes. The group activities used as a feature of the flipped classroom can be seen as an instrument to deliver a safer and high quality of care.

Application effect of BOPPPS teaching model on fundamentals of nursing education: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies

Background

BOPPPS (bridge-in, learning objective, pretest, participatory learning, posttest, and summary) is a student-centered, closed-loop teaching model that emphasizes real-time communication and feedback.

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to review and evaluate the effect of BOPPPS teaching model in "Fundamentals of Nursing" teaching.

Methods

We conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) based on the BOPPPS teaching model in "Fundamentals of Nursing" teaching. To review domestic and foreign databases for the period 2010 to September 2023. Finally, 13 RCTs were included and the teaching outcomes were measured and analyzed. Two researchers independently identified, selected, and extracted data from the study and examined the risk of bias. The primary outcomes were students' examination scores (theoretical scores: scores obtained in the nursing fundamentals course, reflecting students' understanding and mastery of the course content; practical scores: assessment results based on practical application or experimental skills, evaluating students' practical skill level). The secondary outcomes were self-learning ability score: indicators assessing students' self-directed learning ability, reflecting their competence in independent learning and autonomous exploration; and satisfaction rate of teaching effect: the overall satisfaction rate of students with the teaching effects experienced during teaching process reflects the proportion of students' acceptance and satisfaction with the teaching program. The results were evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) profiler software. The GRADE profiler software is used to assess and grade the recommendations according to the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Assessment) criteria.

Results

A total of 13 studies were included, consisting of 2,991 nursing students. Among them, 1,465 students were in the BOPPPS teaching group, while 1,526 students were in the traditional teaching group. The summary analysis of the main outcomes showed that the BOPPPS teaching model had significantly higher scores in theoretical score (MD = 3.35, 95% CI: 2.35-4.35, Z = 6.56, p < 0.00001), practice score (MD = 4.50, 95% CI: 1.95-7.05, Z = 3.45, p = 0.0006), and self-learning ability score (MD = 6.76, 95% CI: 5.38-8.14, Z = 9.60, p < 0.00001) compared to the traditional teaching group. The satisfaction rate of students in the BOPPPS teaching group regarding teaching effectiveness was 89% (95% CI = 0.84-0.93). The differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The GRADE evidence level for theoretical score and satisfaction rate of teaching effect is low. The evidence level for practice score is very low, and for self-learning ability score is moderate.

Conclusion

The BOPPPS teaching mode is helpful to improve the theoretical score, practice score, and self-learning ability score of "Fundamentals of Nursing," and improve the satisfaction rate of students to the teaching effect. The teaching effect is better than the traditional teaching method.

Twelve tips for integrating podcasts into medical education curricula

Engagement with medical education podcasts among health professions learners has been increasing steadily over the last several years. Prior '12 Tips' publications have focused on helping medical educators create and publish their own podcasts. However, there is a gap in available resources to help educators incorporate an already existing and growing library of medical education podcasts into their curriculum rather than create their own. In this paper, the authors provide medical educators '12 Tips' on how to integrate podcasts into their teaching sessions grounded in fundamental principles of curriculum development, cognitive science, and accessibility.

Flipped Classroom: Improved team performance during resuscitation training through interactive pre-course content - a cluster-randomised controlled study

BACKGROUND

Resuscitation is a team effort, and it is increasingly acknowledged that team cooperation requires training. Staff shortages in many healthcare systems worldwide, as well as recent pandemic restrictions, limit opportunities for collaborative team training. To address this challenge, a learner-centred approach known as flipped learning has been successfully implemented. This model comprises self-directed, asynchronous pre-course learning, followed by knowledge application and skill training during in-class sessions. The existing evidence supports the effectiveness of this approach for the acquisition of cognitive skills, but it is uncertain whether the flipped classroom model is suitable for the acquisition of team skills. The objective of this study was to determine if a flipped classroom approach, with an online workshop prior to an instructor-led course could improve team performance and key resuscitation variables during classroom training.

METHODS

A single-centre, cluster-randomised, rater-blinded study was conducted on 114 final year medical students at a University Hospital in Germany. The study randomly assigned students to either the intervention or control group using a computer script. Each team, regardless of group, performed two advanced life support (ALS) scenarios on a simulator. The two groups differed in the order in which they completed the flipped e-learning curriculum. The intervention group started with the e-learning component, and the control group started with an ALS scenario. Simulators were used for recording and analysing resuscitation performance indicators, while professionals assessed team performance as a primary outcome.

RESULTS

The analysis was conducted on the data of 96 participants in 21 teams, comprising of 11 intervention groups and 10 control groups. The intervention teams achieved higher team performance ratings during the first scenario compared to the control teams (Estimated marginal mean of global rating: 7.5 vs 5.6, p < 0.01; performance score: 4.4 vs 3.8, p < 0.05; global score: 4.4 vs 3.7, p < 0.001). However, these differences were not observed in the second scenario, where both study groups had used the e-learning tool.

CONCLUSION

Flipped classroom approaches using learner-paced e-learning prior to hands-on training can improve team performance.

Local experience of laboratory activities in a BS physical therapy course: integrating sEMG and kinematics technology with active learning across six cohorts

Introduction

Integrating technology and active learning methods into Laboratory activities would be a transformative educational experience to familiarize physical therapy (PT) students with STEM backgrounds and STEM-based new technologies. However, PT students struggle with technology and feel comfortable memorizing under expositive lectures. Thus, we described the difficulties, uncertainties, and advances observed by faculties on students and the perceptions about learning, satisfaction, and grades of students after implementing laboratory activities in a PT undergraduate course, which integrated surface-electromyography (sEMG) and kinematic technology combined with active learning methods.

Methods

Six cohorts of PT students (n = 482) of a second-year PT course were included. The course had expositive lectures and seven laboratory activities. Students interpreted the evidence and addressed different motor control problems related to daily life movements. The difficulties, uncertainties, and advances observed by faculties on students, as well as the students' perceptions about learning, satisfaction with the course activities, and grades of students, were described.

Results

The number of students indicating that the methodology was "always" or "almost always," promoting creative, analytical, or critical thinking was 70.5% [61.0-88.0%]. Satisfaction with the whole course was 97.0% [93.0-98.0%]. Laboratory grades were linearly associated to course grades with a regression coefficient of 0.53 and 0.43 R-squared (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

Integrating sEMG and kinematics technology with active learning into laboratory activities enhances students' engagement and understanding of human movement. This approach holds promises to improve teaching-learning processes, which were observed consistently across the cohorts of students.

Biomedical students' self-efficacy and academic performance by gender in a flipped learning haematology course

INTRODUCTION

This study investigated the impact of flipped learning versus traditional instruction on medical students' academic performance and self-efficacy in a haematology course, and examined gender differences. Flipped learning is an instructional approach where students review pre-recorded lecture content at home, and active learning occurs in the classroom. Self-efficacy refers to students' beliefs in their ability to succeed and accomplish learning goals.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 86 third-year Saudi medical students (46 males, 40 females) in a 10-week haematology course. Students were assigned to flipped learning group (n = 41) or traditional lecture group (n = 45). Both groups completed pre- and post-intervention academic tests and self-efficacy surveys. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests.

RESULTS

The flipped learning group showed an increase in academic scores (p <.05) and self-efficacy scores (p <.05) compared to the traditional group, but between group differences were not statistically significant. Female students in the flipped learning group showed the greatest increase in academic scores and self-efficacy. Most students perceived flipped learning positively for enhancing learning and preparation for class.

CONCLUSION

Flipped learning promoted self-efficacy compared to traditional lectures in medical students. Gender-specific benefits were observed, highlighting the need to design instruction to meet diverse student needs.

Knowledge Transfer and Networking Upon Implementation of a Transdisciplinary Digital Health Curriculum in a Unique Digital Health Training Culture: Prospective Analysis

Background

Digital health has been taught at medical faculties for a few years. However, in general, the teaching of digital competencies in medical education and training is still underrepresented.

Objective

This study aims to analyze the objective acquisition of digital competencies through the implementation of a transdisciplinary digital health curriculum as a compulsory elective subject at a German university. The main subject areas of digital leadership and management, digital learning and didactics, digital communication, robotics, and generative artificial intelligence were developed and taught in a transdisciplinary manner over a period of 1 semester.

Methods

The participants evaluated the relevant content of the curriculum regarding the competencies already taught in advance during the study, using a Likert scale. The participants' increase in digital competencies were examined with a pre-post test consisting of 12 questions. Statistical analysis was performed using an unpaired 2-tailed Student t test. A P value of <.05 was considered statistically significant. Furthermore, an analysis of the acceptance of the transdisciplinary approach as well as the application of an alternative examination method (term paper instead of a test with closed and open questions) was carried out.

Results

In the first year after the introduction of the compulsory elective subject, students of human medicine (n=15), dentistry (n=3), and medical biotechnology (n=2) participated in the curriculum. In total, 13 participants were women (7 men), and 61.1% (n=11) of the participants in human medicine and dentistry were in the preclinical study stage (clinical: n=7, 38.9%). All the aforementioned learning objectives were largely absent in all study sections (preclinical: mean 4.2; clinical: mean 4.4; P=.02). The pre-post test comparison revealed a significant increase of 106% in knowledge (P<.001) among the participants.

Conclusions

The transdisciplinary teaching of a digital health curriculum, including digital teaching methods, considers perspectives and skills from different disciplines. Our new curriculum facilitates an objective increase in knowledge regarding the complex challenges of the digital transformation of our health care system. Of the 16 student term papers arising from the course, robotics and artificial intelligence attracted the most interest, accounting for 9 of the submissions.

Dental students in an orthodontic course flipped classroom: A semi-experimental study on knowledge, practice, attitude, and satisfaction

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to determine the students' attitudes before and after the flipped classroom, and the effectiveness of this method to promote the students' lateral cephalograms tracing abilities, students' satisfaction and their final exam scores.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This is a single-group quasi-experimental research conducted on dental students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), Iran in 2019. The intervention was carried out in a blended learning approach with the flipped classroom model. Thirty-five fourth-year dental students participated in a flipped classroom held during a semester for the lateral cephalograms tracing course. The students were provided with the educational materials before the class time through multimedia learning tools and the class time was devoted to discussions. The students were asked to fill out four questionnaires (pretest/posttest attitudes, pretest/posttest self-assessments of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in cephalograms, posttest of satisfaction from quality of the course, and posttest of students' views about effectiveness of blended learning tools) and final exam scores of students.

RESULTS

Students' attitudes toward e-Learning were improved after the flipped classroom and the quality of this method was acceptable to the students (p < .001). Their self-assessment of theoretical knowledge and practical skills were promoted (p < .001). While all blended learning tools averaged more than the cut-off-point, short lecture (5.11 ± 0.98) and live feedback (4.98 ± 1.07) were considered to be the most efficient interactive tools.

CONCLUSION

It seems that the flipped classroom has a positive effect on increasing students' knowledge, attitude, and satisfaction. In general, this method of learning seems to be favored by dental students.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The findings showed that blended learning had a positive effect on increasing knowledge, performance, and satisfaction among dental students. Therefore, blended learning as a reliable method might be used in training dental students.

[High interaction potential of online-only courses with breakout sessions-results of a pilot study]

BACKGROUND

The flipped classroom (FC) is nowadays a popular principle of blended student-centered learning. Students first prepare basic knowledge at home and subsequently meet for consolidation and a more in-depth look at a certain topic. During the COVID-19 pandemic, several groups developed approaches to also transform the characteristic FC second session into an online-only format.

OBJECTIVE

Herein, we present a pilot study on establishing an online-only FC format with elements of collaborative learning and its evaluation by medical students.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The FC design related to diseases of the salivary glands was transformed into an online-only event. After studying the basic information online, supported by self-made interactive videos and/or lecture recordings, students met in a video conference enriched by breakout sessions, interactive demonstration of the related clinical examination including ultrasound, and a formative assessment. A questionnaire with 27 items was answered by participants to evaluate the concept and the event.

RESULTS

Use of common hard- and software systems led to a technically stable video conference. A total of 55 students completed the questionnaire and were included into data analysis. During the breakout sessions, lively interaction between participants was observed. The evaluation of both the event itself and the related learning progress showed good results despite the lack of preparation beforehand in 27% of participants.

CONCLUSION

Online-only FC designs can result in high satisfaction. High quality of online preparation, a solid technical platform, accurate time management, and a reasonable selection of topics are the main parameters contributing to successful course design. Nowadays, embedding medical imaging can be realized in appropriate quality for educational purposes. The implementation of breakout sessions and voting tools enables collaborative online learning with high levels of interaction and satisfaction for both teachers and students.

Effectiveness of Lung Ultrasound Training Utilizing a High-Fidelity Simulator

Background

The usefulness of lung ultrasound (LUS) has been demonstrated. However, it is unclear whether diagnostic techniques using LUS are accepted by all physicians. A simple simulation-based educational program may improve the LUS skills of beginners, but it has not been fully assessed.

Objective

This prospective study was conducted to assess the educational outcomes of LUS training using a high-fidelity simulator.

Methods

A simulator-based program for LUS was conducted. All clerkship students at the Department of Respirology at Chiba University Hospital participated in the program from December 2022 to April 2023. The participants watched a 30 minute teaching video on demand before a hands-on session lasting for 1 hour during the first week of the clinical clerkship. The readiness of the participants to learn LUS and the usefulness of the program were assessed using questionnaires administered before and after the program. The LUS skills were assessed using simulator-based tests during Weeks 1 and 4. Data on the accuracy and time required to answer the questions were collected during the tests.

Results

Forty clerkship students participated in this study. Thirty-three (82.5%) had received other ultrasound education; however, only two (5.0%) had experience with LUS. Based on the questionnaire responses, the participants perceived LUS as useful (preprogram: 4.6 vs. postprogram: 4.8; P = 0.010; a 5-point Likert scale was used [1: not useful to 5: useful]). The simulator-based tests showed comparable accuracies at Weeks 1 and 4 for pneumothorax (Week 1: 47.5% vs. Week 4: 52.5%; P = 0.623), pulmonary edema (Week 1: 100% vs. Week 4: 100%; P = 1.000), and pleural effusion (Week 1: 37.5% vs. Week 4: 40.0%; P = 0.800). The time required for scanning was the same for each question. In addition, the test results did not differ with prior learning, previous knowledge, or experience during clinical clerkships on LUS.

Conclusion

A short educational program consisting of on-demand learning and hands-on sessions with a high-fidelity simulator would be effective in equipping clerkship students with basic LUS skills. However, to increase its educational effectiveness to a practical degree, the program should be improved, and more opportunities for training using simulators should be provided.

Changing Surgical Culture Through Surgical Education: Introduction to the PACTS Trial

The Provider Awareness and Cultural dexterity Toolkit for Surgeons (PACTS) curriculum was developed to improve surgical resident cultural dexterity, with the goal of promoting health equity by developing cognitive skills to adapt to individual patients' needs to ensure personal, patient-centered surgical care through structured educational interventions for surgical residents. Funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH)'s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, PACTS addresses surgical disparities in patient care by incorporating varied educational interventions, with investigation of both traditional and nontraditional educational outcomes such as patient-reported and clinical outcomes, across multiple hospitals and regions. The unique attributes of this multicenter, multiphased research trial will not only impact future surgical education research, but hopefully improve how surgeons learn nontechnical skills that modernize surgical culture and surgical care. The present perspective piece serves as an introduction to this multifaceted surgical education trial, highlighting the rationale for the study and critical curricular components such as key stakeholders from multiple institutions, multimodal learning and feedback, and diverse educational outcomes.

The Undermined ACGME Subcompetency: A Roadmap for Radiology Residency Programs to Foster Residents-as-Educators

Radiology Residency programs in the United States use a set of six core competencies as laid out by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to evaluate the foundational skills of every resident. Despite the fact that educational skills are included under the heading of Practice-Based Learning and Improvement in the ACGME guidelines for radiology residents, it is often underappreciated and undervalued, when compared with medical knowledge or patient care. In this paper, the authors lay out the important role of residents-as-educators and how it can be inculcated as part of formal training during residency. They enunciate five pillars for academic programs to build and maintain the pedagogical skills of their radiology residents: Training, Practicing, Providing Feedback, Mentoring, and Changing the Culture. The authors believe that implementing this will holistically benefit radiology residents as well as radiology in building future educators. The authors also delineate the challenges that programs currently face in implementation and ways to overcome them.

Evaluating the impact of a blended interprofessional education course on students' attitudes towards interprofessional education: a pre-post study

BACKGROUND

Since 2011, five educational and healthcare institutions have implemented a short interprofessional education (IPE) course to bring together undergraduates from five disciplines. To meet the logistical challenges of IPE implementation, more specifically, the large number of classrooms needed to gather students together and the need for human resources to guide learning activities, a face-to-face IPE course was redesigned into a blended (online and face-to-face collaborative learning activities) IPE course. In March 2023, 183 medical, 378 nursing, 46 radiologic technology, 69 physiotherapy, and 74 occupational therapy students participated in a one-day IPE blended course to learn interprofessional team functioning and dynamics, role clarification and responsibilities of other professions, and interprofessional communication skills. This study aimed to assess students' changes in attitudes towards IPE after being involved in a large-scale interprofessional blended learning course.

METHODS

A before-after study was conducted using a French translation of the validated questionnaire "University of West of England Interprofessional Questionnaire" (UWE-IP questionnaire). Students' attitudes towards interprofessional (IP) relationships and IP learning were measured before and after the course. In March 2023, two hundred fifty-six students from five professions answered two subscales of the UWE-IP questionnaire before and after the course (response rate 34%).

RESULTS

Students' attitudes towards IP relationships improved significantly after the course. The score on this subscale (min 8; max 24) changed from 11.18 (SD 2,67) before the course to 10,38 (SD 2,55) after the course, indicating a significant improvement in attitudes towards IP relationships (p < 0,001). More specifically, students had more positive attitudes on the item "I have a good understanding of the roles of different health and social care professionals." and the item "I feel that I am respected by people from other health and social care disciplines." after the course. A positive change in students' attitudes towards IP learning was observed, but the results were not significative.

CONCLUSION

A face-to-face IPE course redesigned as a blended course helped overcome existing challenges to implementing an IPE course. The results suggest a blended IPE course improves students' attitudes towards interprofessionality.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of using flipped classroom in puncture skills teaching

BACKGROUND

The effectiveness of flipped classroom (FC) on puncture skills in medical education is still uncertain. This study aimed to assess the role of the FC model in puncture skills and investigate the acceptance and approval of FC among medical students and instructors.

METHODS

A mixed research approach of quasi-experimental research design and descriptive qualitative research was conducted in September 2022 for one month, using an FC teaching method that combined instructional videos and group learning. The study participants were 71 fifth-year medical students from two classes at a Chinese medical school and four instructors. The medical students were randomly divided into two groups: the traditional classroom (TC) group (Group A) and the FC group (Group B). For teaching, Group B used FC, and Group A used PowerPoint-based TC. The effectiveness of the two teaching models was assessed with Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), and questionnaires were distributed to the medical students and instructors after the assessment. Two independent sample t-tests were used to analyse the differences in demographic data and the OSCE scores of the two groups of medical students.

RESULTS

Group B scored higher in puncture skills than Group A, especially regarding abdominal puncture (p = 0.03), thoracentesis (p < 0.001), bone marrow puncture (p < 0.001) and average performance of puncture skills (p < 0.001). For lumbar puncture, no difference in skill scores was observed between groups A and B (p > 0.409). The medical students thought that the FC improved their self-learning ability and helped them acquire knowledge. Regarding the OSCE of their skills, most medical students thought that it was more innovative and objective than traditional examinations and that it was better for assessing their overall abilities. Both the FC and OSCE were supported by the medical students. The instructors were also satisfied with the students' performance in the FC and supported the teaching model, agreeing to continue using it.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows that FC teaching that combines instructional videos and group learning is a reliable and well-received teaching method for puncture skills, which supplements and expands existing teaching methods in the medical field.

Blended learning in nursing pharmacology: elevating cognitive skills, engagement and academic outcomes

Pharmacological education is crucial for healthcare professionals to safely manage medications and reduce errors. Traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) often struggles to address this complexity, whereas newer methods, such as flipped classrooms and problem-based learning, yield mixed results, particularly in pre-clinical contexts, owing to students' limited experience. Our nursing pharmacology course under LBL recorded a high failure rate of 37.8% and marginal passing scores across five cohorts (n = 849 students). An analysis using Bloom's taxonomy revealed significant gaps in higher-order cognitive skills. As a remedy, the course was transformed into a novel blended learning format that integrated question-based learning (QBL) to enhance critical thinking across all cognitive levels. This model blends asynchronous and synchronous learning, is tailored to individual needs in large classes, and fosters continuous, student-centric learning. The redesign markedly decreased the failure rate by approximately 2.8-fold and increased the average grade by 11.8 points among 426 students. It notably improved the pass rates in advanced cognitive categories, such as "Evaluate" and "Create" by 19.0% and 24.2%, respectively. Additionally, the blended course showed increased student engagement, reflecting a dynamic and effective learning environment that significantly elevated participation and academic outcomes at all cognitive levels. This study demonstrated the profound impact of blended learning in pharmacology. By integrating QBL with various teaching methods, it surpasses traditional lecture-based limitations, enhancing engagement and understanding of complex topics by nursing students. Notable improvements in foundational and advanced learning suggest its broader application in health professionals' education, effectively equipping students for clinical pharmacology challenges.

University Students as Change Agents for Health and Sustainability: A Pilot Study on the Effects of a Teaching Kitchen-Based Planetary Health Diet Curriculum

Global dietary habits are one of the main drivers of climate change. At the same time, they contribute to 11 million premature deaths every year. This raises the question of how the urgently needed transformation of food systems can be realized. Regardless of their degree paths, all university students, in their role as potential future experts and leaders in their fields, can serve as important change agents in society. In this paper, we (a) introduce a university curriculum in a teaching kitchen setting that is based on the planetary health diet (PHD) of the EAT-Lancet Commission, (b) investigate its feasibility, and (c) analyze its effects on the planetary health diet literacy of a pilot cohort of university students enrolled in various degree programs. We developed seven flipped classroom teaching kitchen sessions based on social cognitive theory (SCT), each consisting of a one-hour seminar with student presentations on various nutrition- and sustainability-related key topics, followed by corresponding two-hour hands-on cooking classes. To assess feasibility, specific questions from the official teaching evaluation of the University of Göttingen were analyzed. Changes in self-assessed planetary health diet literacy were measured using a pre- and post-survey. During the pilot phase, 26 students successfully completed the course. A total of 25 participants responded to the teaching evaluation and expressed high satisfaction with the course, the learning outcomes, and the level of demand. A total of 26 participants completed the pre- and post-survey. At the post-intervention, the students rated their planetary health diet literacy as 21 to 98% higher than before their course participation. The findings of this pilot study indicate that the curriculum was well-received and feasible with the target group, and they demonstrate that the course participation increased the university students' self-assessed ability to disseminate strategies for more sustainable and healthy diets. Through replication at other universities worldwide, the teaching kitchen-based planetary health diet curriculum might foster a social shift towards healthier and more climate-friendly food systems.

A comparative study on the effectiveness of online and in-class team-based learning on student performance and perceptions in virtual simulation experiments

BACKGROUND

The swift transition to online teaching in medical education has presented the challenge of replicating in-class engagement and interaction essential for active learning. Despite online team-based learning (TBL) offering potential solutions through structured cooperative activities, its efficacy in virtual simulation experiment courses remains scantily researched. This study investigates the effectiveness of online TBL for teaching virtual patient experiments in a basic medical laboratory course and contrasts it with traditional offline teaching in terms of student performance and perceptions.

METHODS

A comparative analysis involved 179 Year 3 medical students using online TBL, face-to-face TBL (FTF-TBL), and the flipped classroom (FC) approach. The learning outcomes were assessed based on experiment reports, IRAT scores, TRAT scores, and final exam performance. Students' perceptions of both online and in-class TBL methodologies were also surveyed.

RESULTS

Both online and in-class TBL groups demonstrated comparable academic outcomes and surpassed the FC group in academic performance. Students displayed a marked preference for the TBL format (whether online or in-class), valuing its enhancement of learning interest and practical knowledge application. Nevertheless, refinements in discussion efficiency, platform convenience, and student-instructor interaction were indicated as potential areas of improvement in the online setting.

CONCLUSIONS

Online TBL, along with its in-class counterpart, showed superior academic performance and a more positive learning experience compared to the FC group. These findings underscore the potential of online TBL in adapting to modern pedagogical challenges and enriching medical education through virtual simulation experiments.

A Standardized Education Program on Deceased Organ and Tissue Donation for Premedical and Medial Students in Korea

Background

As the imbalance in organ demand and supply is getting worse, <1000 patients waiting for organ transplants die each year in South Korea. To enhance positive attitudes to deceased organ-tissue donation through systematic education, we developed an educational program with delivery pathways for premedical and medical students.

Methods

Online and offline self-learning educational materials on deceased organ-tissue donation were generated and posted on the Vitallink Academy YouTube site. Thirty-two pre- and 15 posteducation questionnaires were developed using a web-based survey platform, and conducted before and immediately after the education process. The education proceeded in 3 steps: (1) group study sessions on selected topics, (2) poster submissions by each group and the selection of excellent poster by the organizing committee, and (3) excellent poster presentation and questions and answers.

Results

A total of 141 students in the first year of premedical classes at the Seoul National University College of Medicine participated in this program. Only 24.2% of responders agreed that anyone who was diagnosed with brain death should donate. The proportion of students with positive attitudes toward organ-tissue donation increased from 74.7% to 97.7% (P < 0.001) with our education. Likewise, interest in deceased organ-tissue donation-related issues increased from 33.3% to 84.9% (P < 0.001). The expressed willingness for organ-tissue donation also increased from 76.8% to 96.5% (P < 0.001). The proportion of accepting brain death as the determination of death increased from 61.6% to 89.5% (P < 0.001). Moreover, 81.4% changed their approach and planned to register with an organ donor card.

Conclusions

In this study, significant improvements were observed in knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward organ-tissue donation with our newly developed co-participatory education program for premedical students. Hence, target-specific education can be regarded as a valuable approach to enhancing public awareness of deceased organ-tissue donation.

Assisted Reproduction for a Same-Sex Couple: Interdisciplinary Preclinical Active Learning Module Combining Case-Based Small Group Discussion and Patient Panel

OBJECTIVE

Physicians often feel they are not equipped to serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBTQ) community, but integrating education that incorporates LGBTQ content and perspective into an already-condensed medical school curriculum is challenging. We developed a preclinical active learning module on assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in LGBTQ care, integrating clinical and basic science content with patient perspective.

METHODS

We created a module that combined a case-based small group discussion with a patient panel. We developed a case for discussion in collaboration with a female cis-gender same-sex couple who conceived through ART. A patient panel with the same couple followed the discussion. All first-year medical students attended both parts of the module. Prior to participation, students learned reproductive endocrinology and genetics concepts through lectures. After the module, students voluntarily completed an anonymous survey to evaluate self-perceived changes in familiarity and confidence with LGBTQ patients and satisfaction with the module.

RESULTS

Of the 126 students who attended, 72 (57%) completed the survey. Of these, 69 (95.8%) felt the module gave them better perspectives on LGBTQ patient experiences, and 66 to 69 (92-96%) agreed the small group discussion achieved its learning objectives on LGBTQ health barriers and the application of ART. Students valued the patient panel (84.7%) and cited a better understanding of reproductive barriers for LGBTQ patients as its most valuable point.

CONCLUSION

A preclerkship module combining a case-based small group discussion and patient panel on ART delivered in the context of a real-life LGBTQ patient experience provided an opportunity for the students to integrate basic science and clinical science knowledge to reflect on the healthcare needs of this patient population. Creating the case in collaboration with the same-sex couple and having them present their own experience provided an authentic perspective to students on reproductive healthcare issues and how they impact members of the LGBTQ community.

Pediatric Intersession: An Upfront Flipped-Classroom Curriculum to Promote Pediatric Clerkship Readiness

OBJECTIVES

Best practices for content selection, mode of delivery, and timing of pediatric clerkship readiness curricula for medical students have, by and large, not been established. Capitalizing on changes in structure of the clinical clerkships during the COVID-19 pandemic, we created an upfront clerkship readiness curriculum, termed Pediatric Intersession (PI), to replace the existing weekly lecture-based clerkship didactics.

METHODS

Our goal was to develop an interactive curriculum with innovative instructional design methodology intended to promote broad foundational pediatric knowledge and clerkship preparedness using case-based learning. We first conducted a needs assessment and crafted curriculum content using guiding principles from the 2019 Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP) curriculum. We then organized material into four daily modules prior to the start of the clerkship and employed flipped classroom (FC) methodology.

RESULTS

Sixty-six percent of students completed course evaluations, and >90% of the 100 respondents reported that the PI enhanced their clinical learning. Pre-/post-testing demonstrated some knowledge gain following the small-group sessions and there was no change on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Subject Exam mean scores compared to prior cohorts of students.

CONCLUSIONS

The global pandemic provided an opportunity to re-envision our pediatric clerkship didactics content, while also incorporating instructional design methodology preferred by students. Our curriculum promotes a small group-based, interactive approach to clerkship readiness that fosters learning in the clinical environment that can be adapted for various settings. Our evaluation suggests that the transition to a FC readiness curriculum can be done successfully while effectively preparing students for their pediatric clerkship.

The effects of using a flipped classroom pedagogy in nursing anesthesia education: a program evaluation

BACKGROUND

The flipped classroom (FC) pedagogy improves undergraduate student proficiency and satisfaction. However, its effectiveness has not been demonstrated in nursing anesthesia education.

OBJECTIVES

Pre- and post-FC tests and course evaluations were retrospectively compared to determine if FC was an effective pedagogy for a nursing anesthesia program (NAP).

METHODS

The design of the study was a retrospective program evaluation. Two groups were compared with 59 students in the pre-FC group taught via traditional lecture and 61 students in the post-FC group taught with FC. Answers to the same 167 test questions were compared using an independent t-test and five course evaluation questions were statistically compared using NPAR1WAY procedure with the Wilcoxon option to determine if significant differences existed between the two nursing anesthesia student cohorts.

RESULTS

The post-FC students exhibited a significant 4 % increase in test scores and expressed increased satisfaction compared to their pre-FC counterparts.

CONCLUSIONS

This retrospective program evaluation showed that student proficiency and satisfaction improved between the groups after changing to the FC pedagogy. However, research is needed to determine the true value of using FC in nursing anesthesia education.

IMPLICATIONS FOR AN INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE

The flipped classroom model can be beneficial in graduate nursing education with our ever-changing student population.

Emergency medicine education via the micro-course and flipped classroom-reform of medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic

The "micro-course" and "flipped classroom" are emerging tools for medical education but little is known about their utility for emergency medicine teaching. The suitability of the micro-course combined with flipped classroom is investigated for delivery of an emergency medicine course in West Anhui Health Vocational College. Students from Class A and Class B of the Clinical Department of West Anhui Health Vocational College, Grade 2000, were assigned to experimental (micro-course plus flipped classroom, n = 102) and control (traditional, didactic teaching, n = 104) groups, respectively. The effectiveness of teaching was assessed by theoretical tests and questionnaires at the end of the course. Theory test results were significantly better for the experimental group than for controls (t = 3.122, P < .01). General satisfaction of students who had participated in the micro-course plus flipped classroom exceeded that of those who had received traditional teaching. Enthusiasm, efficiency, and learning facility was self-reported to be enhanced by students in the experimental group relative to controls. Use of the micro-course combined with flipped classroom successfully increased the outcome of emergency medicine teaching and may be considered as an approach to reform emergency medicine teaching in medical colleges and universities.

Re-conceptualizing medical education in the post-COVID era

PURPOSE

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced changes in the delivery of medical education. We aimed to explore these changes and determine whether they will impact the future of medical education in any way.

METHODS

We invited leaders in medical education from all accessible US-based medical schools to participate in an online individual semi-structured interview.

RESULTS

Representatives of 16 medical schools participated. They commented on the adequacy of online education for knowledge transfer, and the logistical advantages it offered, but decried its negative influence on social learning, interpersonal relationships and professional development of students, and its ineffectiveness for clinical education. Most participants indicated that they would maintain online learning for didactic purposes in the context of flipped classrooms but that a return to in-person education was essential for most other educational goals. Novel content will be introduced, especially in telemedicine and social medicine, and the students' roles and responsibilities in patient care and in curricular development may evolve in the future.

CONCLUSIONS

This study is the first to document the practical steps that will be adopted by US medical schools in delivering medical education, which were prompted and reinforced by their experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

An innovative optics lab design for residency training in ophthalmology

Proper understanding of the optical function of the eye is the foundation of clinical understanding of ophthalmologists. Although teaching principals of optics has always been a part of ophthalmology residency curriculum, it seems that successful strategies other than lecture-based methods are needed to engage students and facilitate the understanding of optical principals. A collaborative team of physicists (optics Ph.D.), ophthalmologists and medical education experts designed an optics lab for ophthalmology residents to help them practically simulate different optical phenomena. The educational course consisted of 4 sessions of 90 min to practice the optical tests using the lab instruments. Each class consisted of 6-9 residents, divided into 3 groups with a fully equipped unit, and two mentors (an optics Ph.D. professor and an ophthalmology professor). A quasi-experimental design with pre-post test was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the training workshop in changing the ophthalmology residents' optical knowledge and attitude. Thirty-five residents participated in the study. The average score of residents' performance before the workshop was 5.21 (out of 100), which increased significantly to 66.1 after the workshop. Also, the average knowledge of residents, which was measured as self-reported, increased significantly from 28.85 to 71.09. The average score of students' attitudes and interest was increased from 40.49 to 74.81. It seems that training workshops and labs are effective to bring about change in knowledge and attitude of ophthalmology residents toward optics as a new teaching strategy that would be implemented in their curriculum.

Student academic performance in non-lecture physiology topics following the abrupt change from traditional on-site teaching to online teaching during COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND

During the COVID-19 pandemic, pre-clerkship medical education, including all physiology classes, was obliged to change to online teaching due to limitations of on-site (face-to-face) classes. However, the effectiveness of online teaching in non-lecture physiology topics during the COVID-19 pandemic has not been thoroughly investigated.

METHOD

We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the students' academic achievement and opinions on online teaching during the COVID-19 academic year. Academic achievement of 312 students in the COVID-19 year was compared with that of 299 students in the pre-COVID-19 year. Student opinions regarding social interactions and the preferred learning method were also collected.

RESULTS

We found that student academic achievement in the non-lecture physiology topics, assessed by summative scores, was 4.80±0.92 percent higher in the pre-COVID-19 year than in the COVID-19 year (P < 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.42). Students rated that online classes tended to reduce their interactions with peers and teachers; however, students preferred online learning over traditional on-site learning.

CONCLUSIONS

This study pointed out that students' academic performance related to the physiology topics taught by online non-lecture methods during the COVID-19 pandemic was lower than their performance when the topics were taught by the traditional (on-site) methods, although students reported that they preferred the online teaching. Hence, we suggest that medical teachers should deliberately plan and utilise a variety of tools and techniques when developing online non-lecture classes to preserve the interactivity of the classes, which might overcome this gap in students' academic performance.

Comparative effectiveness study of flipped classroom versus online-only instruction of clinical reasoning for medical students

CONTEXT

Bedside clinical teaching is the backbone of clerkship education. Data-driven methods for supplementing bedside encounters with standardized content from vetted resources are needed.

OBJECTIVE

To compare a flipped-classroom versus an interactive online-only instruction for improving knowledge, skills, self-directed learning (SDL) behaviors, and satisfaction in a medical school clerkship.

METHODS

An IRB-approved prospective study employing a peer-reviewed clinical reasoning curriculum in neurology was conducted; 2nd-4th year medical students rotating through a required clerkship were enrolled. Students were randomized to flipped-classroom (i.e., flipped) or interactive asynchronous online instruction (i.e., online-only), which supplemented existing bedside teaching. Baseline and end-of-course knowledge, skill development, SDL behaviors, satisfaction, and long-term retention were assessed by peer-reviewed clinical reasoning exam, NBME scores, faculty/resident clinical evaluations, non-compulsory assignment completion, end-of-clerkship surveys, and objective structured clinical exam (OSCE).

RESULTS

104 students (49 flipped, 55 online-only) were enrolled. Age, gender, and training level did not differ by group (all p > 0.43); baseline knowledge was higher in the flipped group (p = 0.003). Knowledge-based exam scores did not differ by group even after adjusting for differences in baseline knowledge (2.3-points higher in flipped group, 95%CI -0.4-4.8, p = 0.07). Clinical skills were significantly higher in the flipped group, including examination skills (4.2 ± 0.5 vs. 3.9 ± 0.7, p = 0.03) and future housestaff potential (4.8 ± 0.3 vs 4.5 ± 0.6, p = 0.03). Students in the online-only group were more likely to engage in SDL (42 vs. 12%, p = 0.001) and reported more hours studying (6.1 vs. 3.8 hours, p = 0.03). Satisfaction (p = 0.51) and OSCE scores (p = 0.28) were not different by group.

CONCLUSIONS

In this comparative study of two evidence-based curricular delivery approaches, we observed no difference in knowledge acquired. Greater clinical skills were observed with flipped instruction, while more SDL was observed with online-only instruction. Supplementing bedside teaching with blended instruction that balances live skill development with vetted online resources is optimal for clerkship education.

Flipped classrooms in pharmacy education: A systematic review

Background

In recent years, flipped classrooms (FCs) have gained popularity in higher education, particularly among healthcare students. The FC model is a blended learning approach that combines online learning with in-class activity. This has prompted many instructors to assess how they teach and prepare successful graduate students for today's society. Additionally, colleges and universities have been challenged to deliver curricula that are relevant to the needs of students and to provide the rising skills and knowledge that are expected to be acquired by students.

Objective

This systematic review aims to evaluate the flipped classroom teaching approach in pharmacy education and to provide a summary of the guidance for the introduction and implementation of the flipped classroom model in pharmacy educational programs.

Method

This systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines. Eight databases were cross-screened by four reviewers, following key terms and predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A form was developed to extract relevant data from the reviewers. Qualitative data within the studies reporting students' and educators' perceptions and views on the FC model were also analyzed using a thematic analysis. Studies were appraised using the Medical Education Research Quality Instrument (MERSQI) and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist for qualitative research.

Results

The reviewers screened 330 articles, of which 35 were included in the review. The themes identified were implementation, academic performance outcomes, student satisfaction with the flipped classroom model, and long-term knowledge retention. Most studies (68%) have found that flipped learning enhances students' success and exam performance. Six (27%) studies reported no statistically significant difference in academic performance. However, two studies reported lower long-term knowledge retention in FC learning than in lecture-based learning. The students' perceptions of the FC approach were assessed in 26 studies, and the majority reported positive feedback. However, some students found the pre-class homework difficult to complete before class, and some expressed dissatisfaction with the inconsistent grading and unclear assessment questions in the FC model. Overall, the FC model was found to enhance the students' critical thinking and communication skills, self-confidence, and time management.

Conclusions

The findings of this review indicate that pharmacy students generally found the flipped classroom model preferable to traditional lectures. However, this preference is conditional on the effective implementation of this approach and alignment within the core instructional elements. The issue of increased workload for students associated with self-directed pre-class learning may present a challenge.

Learning by doing and creation of the shared discovery curriculum

BACKGROUND

The Michigan State College of Human Medicine began as an experiment to teach medical students in community-based settings and to create a primary care workforce for the state. Decades later, CHM faced internal and external challenges that spurred creation of a new curriculum - the Share Discovery Curriculum - founded on learning by doing and other learning theories.

METHODS

A curricular design group (CDG) developed guiding principles for reform. Based on this, pedagogies and structures were selected to achieve this vision and developed into a curricular structure. Components of the first-year curriculum were piloted with a group of students and faculty members.

RESULTS

Six guiding principles were endorsed, grounded in learning theories such as Dewey's Learning by Doing. Based upon these, several key features of the new curriculum emerged: learning communities; one-on-one coaches for students; symptom-based presentations for content; simulation, authentic clinical tasks, flipped classrooms, and modified practice-based learning as primary teaching modalities; early, integrated clinical and scientific learning; milestones as course learning objectives; and a multidimensional, competency-based assessment system.

DISCUSSION

The process and outcomes described here are intended as an exemplar for schools undertaking curricular change. Early stakeholder engagement, faculty development, sustainable administrative systems, and managing complexity are core to the success of such endeavors.

Developing the Disaster Medical Responder's Course in Singapore

Problem

Emergency medical teams (EMTs) deployed to mass casualty incidents (MCIs) are required to work outside their usual settings and according to different principles, which may affect their performance and the survival of casualties. Prior to 2013, training offered to domestic EMTs was limited to ad hoc and infrequent simulation exercises.

Context

Domestic EMTs are activated from public tertiary hospitals to provide pre-hospital medical support to the Singapore Civil Defence Force and establish a first-aid post (FAP) for triaging, stabilizing and treating casualties. These casualties are then evacuated to public hospitals for further management.

Action

Recognizing the need for a more systematic approach to the training of domestic EMTs, the Disaster Medical Responder's Course (the Course) was developed as a multiinstitutional collaboration to equip EMT members attending a MCI with the necessary skills to perform effectively at the FAP.

Outcome

The Course was first run in 2013 and is usually offered six to eight times a year. Since June 2019, a total of 414 health-care staff and allied health professionals have participated. There have been numerous revisions of the course content and delivery to reflect the latest concepts in operations and global best practice, as well as developments in educational methodologies.

Discussion

Preparedness is crucial to optimize the survival and outcomes of casualties. The Course provides standardized training of domestic EMTs and plays a pivotal role in ensuring operational readiness for MCIs in Singapore.

Evaluating the medical curriculum: Bias, problems, solutions

Medical school curriculums have increasingly shifted to an integrated curriculum and have been replacing lecture with 'flipped classroom' approaches. Analyses of the benefits of the integrated curriculum and flipped classroom model typically report enhanced student performance. However, the question is whether institutional self-evaluation of curricular success is biased to demonstrate success that may not objectively exist and/or whether such biased data are presented during Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) site visits. An objective determination of curricular effectiveness requires an absence of bias and of efforts to put an institutional 'thumb on the scale' to obtain desired results. In addition, bias may exist in the rationale for implementing these curricular changes in the first place; these can include, for example, with respect to career advancement as well as ideological motivation. Thus, in this paper I examine potential problems with institutional bias with evaluation of curriculum and how to overcome these.

Effectiveness of flipped classroom in pharmacy education - a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Flipped classroom, blended with online and offline learning, was regarded as an effective learning approach in pharmacy education. This meta-analysis was to comprehensively compare the effectiveness of flipped classroom and traditional lecture-based approaches, attempting to generate a unified and firm conclusion of the effectiveness of flipped classroom in pharmacy education.

METHODS

Data were collected from 7 databases, involving Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Service System (SinoMed). The studies were included if they included objective evaluation of students' performance between groups of flipped classroom and traditional approaches. The standardized mean difference (SMD) with a corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was used as the outcomes for data pooling.

RESULTS

A total of 22 studies (28 comparing groups) with 4379 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The risk of bias was relatively high. Results of the analysis revealed that flipped classroom presented significant advantages over traditional approaches in student performance improvement, with no evidence of publication bias. Through subgroup analysis, it showed better outcomes for flipped classrooms over traditional lectures for the other subgroups, including different performance, degree programs.

CONCLUSIONS

Current evidence reveals that the flipped classroom approach in pharmacy education yields a statistical improvement in student learning compared with traditional methods. In the future, instructors should introduce more online technology into classroom and construct an interactive learning environment.

From tradition to innovation: a comparison of the traditional 4-step approach versus a blended learning modification for technical skills teaching

BACKGROUND

This experimental study was performed to evaluate the role of blended learning for technical skill teaching on the European Trauma Course (ETC). While online modules are extensively used for theoretical teaching, their role in skills training remains less well explored. The ETC currently relies on the established 4-step technique for teaching technical skills. However, the required large cohort of skilled instructors and the time intensity prove increasingly challenging in a current climate of staff shortages and funding constraints. This study assesses if blended learning, combining pre-course online elements with face-to-face training matches the effectiveness of the traditional 4-step approach whilst being more time-efficient.

METHODS

In a randomised, multi-centre trial, the conventional face-to-face 4-step technique for teaching a skill of medium complexity, the application of a pelvic binder, was compared with an innovative blended approach. It was hypothesised that the blended approach was non-inferior for skill performance measured after the teaching session and after two days (skill retention) with the time needed for teaching and student/teacher satisfaction as secondary outcomes.

RESULTS

Ninety participants, divided into 44 traditional and 46 blended method students, were analysed. Independent-samples t-test showed no significant difference in performance scores and non-inferiority of the blended approach with a half of one standard deviation margin. A statistically significant difference in mean retention scores favored the blended approach. A Mann-Whitney U Test revealed no significant difference in candidate satisfaction levels but a statistically significant difference in instructors' satisfaction levels in favour of the blended approach. Analysis with Welch' t-test demonstrated that the face-to-face teaching time needed for the blended approach was significantly shorter (by 6 min).

CONCLUSIONS

The integration of a blended approach with the 4-step technique for teaching pelvic binder application in the ETC streamlined teaching without compromising skill acquisition quality. This innovative approach addresses traditional limitations and shows promise in adapting medical education to modern learning and teaching demands. We suggest that blended learning could also be applied for other skills taught on life support courses.

Case-Based Serious Gaming for Complication Management in Colorectal and Pancreatic Surgery: Prospective Observational Study

BACKGROUND

The potential risk and subsequent impact of serious complications after pancreatic and colorectal surgery can be significantly reduced through early recognition, correct assessment, and timely initiation of appropriate therapy. Serious gaming (SG) is an innovative teaching method that combines play with knowledge acquisition, increased concentration, and quick decision-making and could therefore be used for clinically oriented education.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to develop a case-based SG platform for complication management in pancreatic and colorectal surgery, validate the application by comparing game courses of various professional groups in the health care sector, and test the acceptance of the developed platform in the context of clinical education by measuring levels of usability and applicability within the framework of a validity and usefulness analysis.

METHODS

In this observational trial, a novel SG for management of postoperative complications was developed and prospectively validated in a cohort of 131 human caregivers with varying experience in abdominal surgery. A total of 6 realistic patient cases were implemented, representing common complications after pancreatic and colorectal surgery. Cases were developed and illustrated using anonymized images, data, and histories of postoperative patients. In the prospective section of this study, following a brief case presentation, participants were asked to triage the virtual patient, make an initial suspected diagnosis, and design a 3-step management plan, throughout which the results of selected diagnostic and therapeutic actions were presented. Participants' proposed case management was compared to ideal case management according to clinical guidelines. Usability, applicability, validity, and acceptance of the application were assessed using the Trier Teaching Evaluation Inventory as part of a noncomparative analysis. In addition, a comparative analysis of conventional teaching and learning formats was carried out.

RESULTS

A total of 131 cases were answered. Physicians selected more appropriate therapeutic measures than nonphysicians. In the Trier Teaching Evaluation Inventory, design, structure, relevance, timeliness, and interest promotion were predominantly rated positively. Most participants perceived the application to be superior to conventional lecture-based formats (training courses, lectures, and seminars) in terms of problem-solving skills (102/131, 77.9%), self-reflection (102/131, 77.9%), and usability and applicability (104/131, 79.4%).

CONCLUSIONS

Case-based SG has educational potential for complication management in surgery and could thereby contribute to improvements in postoperative patient care.

An outcomes-based module education via flipped classroom enhances undergraduate oral histopathology learning

INTRODUCTION

Oral histopathology is a bridge course connecting oral basic medicine and clinical dentistry. However, the application of outcomes-based education via flipped classroom (FC) in oral histopathology has not been well explored. This study has assessed the efficacy of outcomes-based education via FC in undergraduate oral histopathology module learning in Nanjing Medical University of China.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 214 third-year students were enrolled and assigned to the FC group of the batch 2022-23 (n = 110) and the traditional classroom (TC) group of the batch 2021-22 (n = 104) to participate the oral histopathology sessions respectively in the study. The FC group were required to preview the online course materials pre-class, followed by in-class quizz, in-class interactive group discussion, and slides microscopic observation. The outcomes-based formative and summative assessments for FC were designed. The TC group attended traditional laboratory class for the same glass slides microscopic observation. In addition, a questionnaire was performed to investigate the satisfaction of learning. Along with this, the performances of FC group in written theory tests and oral histopathology slide tests were compared with TC group.

RESULTS

Students in the FC group gained significantly final higher scores of the course than those in the TC group (score: 83.79 ± 11 vs. 76.73 ± 10.93, P<0.0001). Data from the student questionnaires indicated a preference for outcomes-based module education via FC. In the questionnaires, most students considered outcomes-based module education via FC to be beneficial to learning motivation, knowledge comprehension, critical thinking and teamwork. FC group had a higher level of satisfaction with oral histopathology teaching than TC group (satisfaction score: 4.599 ± 0.1027 vs. 4.423 ± 0.01366, P<0.01).

CONCLUSION

An outcomes-based module education via FC has a promising effect on undergraduate oral histopathology education.

Effects of Distance-Learning Strategies in Dental Fixed Prosthodontics Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study on Preclinical Dental Students' Perspective

BACKGROUND

COVID-19's high transmissibility led to gathering restrictions where dental schools experienced disruptions due to restrictions on attending in-person lectures and limitations placed on applied preclinical and clinical activities. Students not only had to rapidly switch to digital technology-based learning (TB-learning) modules but also experienced high levels of social isolation and anxiety around virus transmission.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to evaluate the preclinical students' perception of switching TB-learning modules amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying which module parameters were associated with strong student outcomes.

METHODS

A web-based survey of 39 Likert scale questions was delivered to preclinical dental students (Western University) to evaluate students' perceptions concerning TB-learning, fear amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact on their preclinical training. A Spearman rank correlation coefficient was determined to estimate the relationship between 2 variables in isolation (P=.01). An ordinal regression analysis was performed on variables of interest to determine how module variables (typically within the instructor's control) influenced the student outcomes (P=.05).

RESULTS

The response rate was 30% (n=39). TB-learning was considered vital (34/39, 87.2%) as the students' education improved (18/39, 46.2%). However, 53.8% (n=21) of students showed increased difficulties in retaining, visualizing, or understanding the materials using TB-learning, and 64.1% (n=25) found it more difficult to concentrate than in in-person classes. In total, 79.5% (n=31) of students showed different levels of agreement about feeling fatigued from TB-learning. Through Spearman ρ correlation analysis, the quality of questions in quizzes (ρ=0.514; P<.001), relevant handouts (ρ=0.729; P<.001), and high-quality audiovisuals (ρ=0.585; P<.001) were positively correlated with students responding that the modules were useful to preclinical training. Similarly, good organization (ρ=0.512; P<.001), high-quality questions in quizzes (ρ=0.431; P=.01), and relevant handouts (ρ=0.551; P<.001) were positively correlated with web-based classes as an effective way to learn. In total, 91.6% (n=36) of the students agreed that COVID-19 was a dangerous disease, whereas 53.8% (n=21) showed different levels of agreement that they were afraid to be infected personally, and 69.2% (n=27) feared passing COVID-19 along to family and friends. A total of 82.1% (n=32) of the students showed that COVID-19 impacted their overall learning process and had a negative impact on their practical preclinical training (31/39, 79.5%).

CONCLUSIONS

The students found a difference between TB-learning and face-to-face learning methods, where the students perceived fatigue toward the web-based method with difficulty concentrating and visualizing the subject. Moreover, there was a consensus that COVID-19 itself affected the students' overall learning process and preclinical training. As dental schools continue implementing TB-learning into their curriculum, this investigation identifies the students' struggles with the paradigm shift. In an effort to improve TB-learning, this work highlights 4 variables (organization, quizzes, quality handouts, and quality audiovisuals) within the control of instructors that can help improve content deliverance, improving the students' experience.

Simulation in a blended learning curriculum for neonatology

Blended learning is a learner-centered educational method that combines online and traditional face-to-face educational strategies. Simulation is a commonly utilized platform for experiential learning and an ideal component of a blended learning curriculum. This section describes blended learning, including its strengths and limitations, educational frameworks, uses within health professions education, best practices, and challenges. Also included is a brief introduction to simulation-based education, along with theoretical and real-world examples of how simulation may be integrated into a blended learning curriculum. Examples of blended learning in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, specifically within the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, procedural skills training, and the National Neonatology Curriculum, are reviewed.
