Abstract
BACKGROUND The availability of robust biomarkers of endothelial activation might enhance the identification of subclinical atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated this issue by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of cell adhesion molecules in RA patients. METHODS We searched electronic databases from inception to 31 July 2023 for case-control studies assessing the circulating concentrations of immunoglobulin-like adhesion molecules (vascular cell, VCAM-1, intercellular, ICAM-1, and platelet endothelial cell, PECAM-1, adhesion molecule-1) and selectins (E, L, and P selectin) in RA patients and healthy controls. Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using the JBI checklist and GRADE, respectively. RESULTS In 39 studies, compared to controls, RA patients had significantly higher concentrations of ICAM-1 (standard mean difference, SMD = 0.81, 95% CI 0.62-1.00, p < 0.001; I2 = 83.0%, p < 0.001), VCAM-1 (SMD = 1.17, 95% CI 0.73-1.61, p < 0.001; I2 = 95.8%, p < 0.001), PECAM-1 (SMD = 0.82, 95% CI 0.57-1.08, p < 0.001; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.90), E-selectin (SMD = 0.64, 95% CI 0.42-0.86, p < 0.001; I2 = 75.0%, p < 0.001), and P-selectin (SMD = 1.06, 95% CI 0.50-1.60, p < 0.001; I2 = 84.8%, p < 0.001), but not L-selectin. In meta-regression and subgroup analysis, significant associations were observed between the effect size and use of glucocorticoids (ICAM-1), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (VCAM-1), study continent (VCAM-1, E-selectin, and P-selectin), and matrix assessed (P-selectin). CONCLUSIONS The results of our study support a significant role of cell adhesion molecules in mediating the interplay between RA and atherosclerosis. Further studies are warranted to determine whether the routine use of these biomarkers can facilitate the detection and management of early atherosclerosis in this patient group. Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests an association between schizophrenia and atherosclerosis. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cell adhesion molecules, critically involved in early atherosclerosis, in schizophrenia. METHODS We searched electronic databases from inception to 11 November 2023 for case-control studies assessing vascular cell, VCAM-1, intercellular, ICAM-1, platelet endothelial cell, PECAM-1, neural cell, NCAM, and Down syndrome cell, DSCAM, adhesion molecules, selectins (E-, L-, and P-selectin), integrins, and cadherins in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using the JBI checklist and GRADE, respectively. RESULTS In 19 eligible studies, there were non-significant between-group differences in the concentrations of cell adhesion molecules, barring higher P-selectin in patients with schizophrenia (standard mean difference, SMD = 2.05, 95 % CI 0.72 to 3.38, p = 0.003; I2 = 97.2 %, p<0.001; very low certainty of evidence). Limited or no information was available regarding PECAM-1, DSCAM, ESAM, integrins, and cadherins. In meta-regression and subgroup analysis, there were significant associations between the SMD of ICAM-1 and matrix used (plasma or serum) and pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia, and between the SMD of VCAM-1 and pharmacological treatment, but not with other study and patient characteristics. CONCLUSIONS The results of our systematic review and meta-analysis do not support a significant role of immunoglobulin-like adhesion molecules, selectins, integrins, or cadherins in mediating the associations between schizophrenia, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. Further studies are warranted to investigate these associations in patients with different cardiovascular risk and the effects of antipsychotic treatments on cell adhesion molecules and surrogate markers of atherosclerosis (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42023463916).

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Physical activity (PA) constitutes an established protective factor while sedentary behavior (SB) an emerging independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. This study evaluated the association of PA and SB with endothelial dysfunction (ED) depending on kidney function status. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the prospective, population-based Maastricht Study were used. PA and SB were measured using the ActivPAL3 accelerometer 24h/day for eight consecutive days. ED was evaluated by plasma levels of soluble vascular cell adhesion protein-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, E-selectin and von Willebrand factor, which were combined into an ED score with higher values depicting higher ED. RESULTS Overall, 2,668 participants, 323 with chronic kidney disease, were included. In normal kidney function individuals, the ED score presented a significant negative association with total, lower-intensity and moderate-to-vigorous PA duration and a positive association with total sedentary time, sedentary breaks and sedentary bout duration. In participants with chronic kidney disease, a significant negative association of ED score with total [β: -4.42, 95% confidence intervals (95% CI): -7.98; -0.87] and lower-intensity (β: -7.08, 95% CI: -13.41; -0.74) PA duration, as well as a positive association of ED score with sedentary bout duration (β: 43.72, 95% CI: 9.85; 77.59) were noted. The strength of associations did not significantly differ across kidney function subgroups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This analysis showed that PA duration is inversely associated with ED both among patients with normal kidney function and chronic kidney disease. In chronic kidney disease, longer sedentary bouts were associated with greater endothelial dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) have systemic biomarker dysregulation that differs by age group; however, the proteomic characteristics of these age-based changes are unknown. OBJECTIVE To profile blood proteins of patients with AD across different age groups versus age-appropriate controls. METHODS Using the Olink high-throughput proteomic platform, we profiled 375 serum proteins of 20 infants (age, 0-5 years), 39 children (age, 6-11 years), 21 adolescents (age, 12-17 years), and 20 adults (age, ≥18 years) with moderate-to-severe AD and 83 age-appropriate controls. RESULTS Each group presented a distinct systemic proteomic signature. Th2-related proteins were increased in infant AD and further intensified with age through adolescence and adulthood (interleukin 4/CCL13/CCL17). In contrast, Th1 axis down-regulation was detected in infants with AD and gradually reversed to increased Th1 products (interferon γ/CXCL9/CXCL10/CCL2) in patients with AD from childhood to adulthood. Despite their short disease duration, infants already had evidence of systemic inflammation, with significant upregulation of innate immunity (interleukin 17C/ interleukin-1RN), T-cell activation/migration (CCL19), Th2 (CCL13/CCL17), and Th17 (PI3) proteins. Adults with AD present unique upregulation of cardiovascular proteins related to coagulation and diabetes. LIMITATIONS Cross-sectional observational study with a single time point. CONCLUSION Systemic immune signatures of AD are age-specific beyond the shared Th2 immune activation. These data advocate for precision medicine approaches based on age-specific AD profiles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Seizures have been shown to increase blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, yet the role of this phenomenon is not fully understood. Additionally, dysfunction of the BBB leads to initiation and propagation of seizures in animal models. To demonstrate the increased permeability of the BBB in time, we investigated changes of the serum levels of BBB markers in patients with epilepsy after bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. We chose markers that might reflect endothelial activation (ICAM-1, selectins), BBB leakage (MMP-9, S100B) and mechanisms of BBB restoration (TIMP-1, thrombomodulin -TM). METHODS We enrolled 50 consecutive patients hospitalised after bilateral tonic-clonic seizures who agreed to take part in the study and 50 participants with no history of epilepsy. Serum levels of selected markers were measured by ELISA at 1-3, 24, and 72 hours after seizures and one time in the control group. RESULTS We found increased levels of S100B, ICAM-1, MMP-9 and P-selectin at 1-3 and 24 hours after seizures and TIMP-1 and TM at 24 and 72 hours after seizures as compared to the control group. The level of E-selectin was decreased at 72 hours after seizures. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest early activation of endothelium and increased BBB permeability after seizures. While we are aware of the limitations due to the non-specificity of the tested proteins, our results might indicate the presence of prolonged BBB impairment due to seizure activity.

Abstract
We have previously reported the in vitro hypocholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of Alcalase-generated lupin protein hydrolysate (LPH). Given that lipoprotein deposition, oxidative stress, and inflammation are the main components of atherogenesis, we characterized the LPH composition, in silico identified LPH-peptides with activities related to atherosclerosis, and evaluated the in vivo LPH effects on atherosclerosis risk factors in a mouse model of atherosclerosis. After 15 min of Alcalase hydrolysis, peptides smaller than 8 kDa were obtained, and 259 peptides out of 278 peptides found showed biological activities related to atherosclerosis risk factors. Furthermore, LPH administration for 12 weeks reduced the plasma lipids, as well as the cardiovascular and atherogenic risk indexes. LPH also increased the total antioxidant capacity, decreased endothelial permeability, inflammatory response, and atherogenic markers. Therefore, this study describes for the first time that LPH prevents the early stages of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: Heart rate and blood pressure are important physiological indicators that reflect cardiovascular function, and they are widely used because they are convenient and practical to measure. Objective: To study the characteristics of cardiovascular changes in athletes under different training conditions. Methods: Thirty-four male students majoring in physical education in universities (group A) and 22 male non-sports majors (group B) with no formal training history were randomly selected. Heart rate before and after exercise and heart rate recovery rate at different stages of the recovery period were compared. Results: As regards heart rate changes in the recovery phase after loading, both groups showed a continuous decline, although the drop in heart rate of group A was slightly lower than that of group B (153.03± 15.88 beats/min, dropped to 110.69± 15.78 beats/minute, 171.00± 14.67 beats/minute dropped to 122. 82± 13.77 beats/min, respectively). However, the heart rate recovery rate of group A (59.40%) was significantly higher than that of group B (49.42%) (P<0.05). Conclusions: Physical exercise plays a significant role in promoting physical fitness and its effect on improving cardiovascular function is especially evident. Abstract
E-selectin is an endothelial cell adhesion molecule involved in vascular inflammation. Elevated E-selectin has been reported in patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. Given the increasing clinical relevance of parameters derived from ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, further investigation of their relationships with E-selectin is of interest. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between serum E-selectin, office blood pressure and 24 h ambulatory blood pressure parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes. Blood pressure variability was assessed by computing the standard deviation of mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure separately for daytime and nighttime during 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 132). Additionally, were assessed nighttime systolic dipping and pulse pressure separately for daytime, nighttime, and 24 h. Serum E-selectin was measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. We found that E-selectin was consistently associated with 24 h diastolic blood pressure variability (r = 0.238; p = 0.019) and daytime diastolic blood pressure variability (r = 0.258; p = 0.012), after adjustment for confounding factors. No association of E-selectin with office blood pressure and other 24 h ambulatory blood pressure parameters was observed. In conclusion, endothelial activation indicated by elevated serum E-selectin is associated with increased ambulatory diastolic blood pressure variability in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
In this observational study, by the use of a multiplex proteomic platform, we aimed to explore associations between 92 targeted proteins involved in cardiovascular disease and/or inflammation, and phenotypes of deteriorating vascular health, with regards to ethnicity.Proteomic profiling (92 proteins) was carried out in 362 participants from the Sympathetic activity and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Africans (SABPA) study of black and white African school teachers (mean age 44.7 ± 9.9 years, 51.9% women, 44.5% Black Africans, 9.9% with known cardiovascular disease). Three proteins with <15% of samples below detectable limits were excluded from analyses. Associations between multiple proteins and prevalence of hypertension as well as vascular health [Carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and pulse wave velocity (PWV)] measures were explored using Bonferroni-corrected regression models.Bonferroni-corrected significant associations between 89 proteins and vascular health markers were further adjusted for clinically relevant co-variates. Hypertension was associated with growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) and C-X-C motif chemokine 16 (CXCL16). cIMT was associated with carboxypeptidase A1 (CPA1), C-C motif chemokine 15 (CCL15), chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1), scavenger receptor cysteine-rich type 1 protein M130 (CD163) and osteoprotegerin, whereas PWV was associated with GDF15, E-selectin, CPA1, fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4), CXCL16, carboxypeptidase B (CPB1), and tissue-type plasminogen activator. Upon entering ethnicity into the models, the associations between PWV and CPA1, CPB1, GDF-15, FABP4, CXCL16, and between cIMT and CCL-15, remained significant.Using a multiplex proteomic approach, we linked phenotypes of vascular health with several proteins. Novel associations were found between hypertension, PWV or cIMT and proteins linked to inflammatory response, chemotaxis, coagulation or proteolysis. Further, we could reveal whether the associations were ethnicity-dependent or not.

Abstract
Introduction Smoking can cause vascular damage in the form of an inflammatory reaction characterized by endothelial activation. Endothelial activation forms a pathological adaptation pattern so that it can induce the atherogenesis process. Several markers, such as E-selectin, platelet-derived micro particles (PMPs) and hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) can identify the activation of endothelial in circulating blood. Therefore, the deviation of vascular adaptation due to smoking can be detected early through the feedback mechanism between E-selectin, PMPs, and HSC. Purpose This study aims to analyze the initial picture of the negative impact of smoking on vascular adaptation by measuring E-selectin, PMPs, and HSC in the peripheral blood circulation. Participant criteria and methods: Peripheral blood samples (5 mL) were taken from each participant, both the smoking group (n = 30) and the non-smoker group (n = 31) to obtain peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC). PBMNC was isolated using ficoll-based gradient centrifugation. The flow cytometry assay method used to measure the E-selectin, PMPs and hematopoietic stem cells. Results The mean of circulating E-selectin in smokers was higher than that of non-smokers. On the other hand, the average number of PMPs and HSCs in smokers was lower than non-smokers. Conclusion Smoking increases the risk of accelerated vascular block formation, as indicated by an increase in the amount of circulating E-selectin. The increase in E-selectin in the blood vessels mediates the increased adhesion of PMPs in the vascular area so that the number of circulating PMPs in smokers decreases. The decrease in circulating PMPs decreases the signal of vascular repair, which is characterized by a decline in the number of HSCs.

Abstract
The Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) last published its comprehensive expert panel report of clinical indications for CMR in 2004. This new Consensus Panel report brings those indications up to date for 2020 and includes the very substantial increase in scanning techniques, clinical applicability and adoption of CMR worldwide. We have used a nearly identical grading system for indications as in 2004 to ensure comparability with the previous report but have added the presence of randomized controlled trials as evidence for level 1 indications. In addition to the text, tables of the consensus indication levels are included for rapid assimilation and illustrative figures of some key techniques are provided.

Abstract
There were 89 articles published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (JCMR) in 2017, including 76 original research papers, 4 reviews, 5 technical notes, 1 guideline, and 3 corrections. The volume was down slightly from 2017 with a corresponding 15% decrease in manuscript submissions from 405 to 346 and thus reflects a slight increase in the acceptance rate from 25 to 26%. The decrease in submissions for the year followed the initiation of the increased author processing charge (APC) for Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) members for manuscripts submitted after June 30, 2018. The quality of the submissions continues to be high. The 2018 JCMR Impact Factor (which is published in June 2019) was slightly lower at 5.1 (vs. 5.46 for 2017; as published in June 2018. The 2018 impact factor means that on average, each JCMR published in 2016 and 2017 was cited 5.1 times in 2018. Our 5 year impact factor was 5.82.In accordance with Open-Access publishing guidelines of BMC, the JCMR articles are published on-line in a continuus fashion in the chronologic order of acceptance, with no collating of the articles into sections or special thematic issues. For this reason, over the years, the Editors have felt that it is useful for the JCMR audience to annually summarize the publications into broad areas of interest or themes, so that readers can view areas of interest in a single article in relation to each other and contemporaneous JCMR publications. In this publication, the manuscripts are presented in broad themes and set in context with related literature and previously published JCMR papers to guide continuity of thought within the journal. In addition, as in the past two years, I have used this publication to also convey information regarding the editorial process and as a "State of our JCMR."This is the 12th year of JCMR as an open-access publication with BMC (formerly known as Biomed Central). The timing of the JCMR transition to the open access platform was "ahead of the curve" and a tribute to the vision of Dr. Matthias Friedrich, the SCMR Publications Committee Chair and Dr. Dudley Pennell, the JCMR editor-in-chief at the time. The open-access system has dramatically increased the reading and citation of JCMR publications and I hope that you, our authors, will continue to send your very best, high quality manuscripts to JCMR for consideration. It takes a village to run a journal and I thank our very dedicated Associate Editors, Guest Editors, Reviewers for their efforts to ensure that the review process occurs in a timely and responsible manner. These efforts have allowed the JCMR to continue as the premier journal of our field. This entire process would also not be possible without the dedication and efforts of our managing editor, Diana Gethers. Abstract
Introduction Adhesion molecules: E-selectin and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) are well-established markers of endothelial injury. The aim of the study was to assess the relation between E-selectin and ICAM-1 and clinical and biochemical parameters in children and adolescents with primary hypertension (PH). Material and methods In 77 patients with PH (15.04 ±2.62 years, 50 boys, 27 girls) we evaluated serum E-selectin, ICAM-1, and selected clinical and biochemical parameters including inflammatory indicators and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Results The E-selectin concentration was 55.63 ±26.49 ng/ml and the ICAM-1 concentration was 302.17 ±67.14 ng/ml. E-selectin and ICAM-1 correlated (p < 0.05) with BMI Z-score (r = 0.24, r = 0.29), ICAM-1 also with uric acid (r = 0.35), HDL-cholesterol (r = –0.28), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (r = 0.26), and systolic and mean blood pressure variability (r = 0.24, r = 0.24); in boys ICAM-1 correlated with mean platelet volume (r = 0.29). In multivariate analysis the only significant predictor of E-selectin was mean arterial pressure during 24 hours (β = 0.329, 95% CI: 0.012-0.646) and of ICAM-1 – uric acid (β = 0.430, 95% CI: 0.040-0.819). In 27 children with newly diagnosed PH E-selectin correlated negatively with diastolic blood pressure dipping (r = –0.54, p = 0.004) and positively with ambulatory arterial stiffness index (r = 0.51, p = 0.012). Conclusions Elevated mean arterial pressure and hyperuricemia are risk factors of endothelial damage in paediatric patients with primary hypertension. In children with untreated primary hypertension there may be a relation between endothelial damage and disturbed circadian blood pressure profile.

Abstract
Elevated Resting Blood Pressure (ERBP) in the prehypertensive range is associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease, the mechanisms of which remain unclear. Prior studies have suggested that ERBP may be associated with overactivation and dysregulation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). We hypothesized that compared to normotensives (≤120/80 mmHg), ERBP (120/80-139/89 mmHg) has higher SNS activity, impaired arterial baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and increased vascular inflammation. Twenty-nine participants were studied: 16 otherwise healthy individuals with ERBP (blood pressure (BP) 130 ± 2/85 ± 2 mmHg) and 13 matched normotensive controls (mean BP 114 ± 2/73 ± 2 mmHg). We measured muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), beat-to-beat BP, and continuous electrocardiogram at rest and during arterial BRS testing via the modified Oxford technique. Blood was analyzed for the following biomarkers of vascular inflammation: lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), E-selectin, and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1). Resting MSNA burst frequency (22 ± 2 vs. 16 ± 2 bursts/min, P = 0.036) and burst incidence (36 ± 3 vs. 25 ± 3 bursts/100 heart beats, P = 0.025) were higher in ERBP compared to controls. Cardiovagal BRS was blunted in ERBP compared to controls (13 ± 2 vs. 20 ± 3 msec/mmHg, P = 0.032), while there was no difference in sympathetic BRS between groups. Lp-PLA2 (169 ± 8 vs. 142 ± 9 nmol/min/mL, P = 0.020) and E-selectin (6.89 ± 0.6 vs. 4.45 ± 0.51 ng/mL, P = 0.004) were higher in ERBP versus controls. E-selectin (r = 0.501, P = 0.011) and ICAM-1 (r = 0.481, P = 0.015) were positively correlated with MSNA, while E-selectin was negatively correlated with cardiovagal BRS (r = -0.427, P = 0.030). These findings demonstrate that individuals with ERBP have SNS overactivity and impaired arterial BRS that are linked to biomarkers of vascular inflammation.
