Abstract
BACKGROUND Periconceptional folic acid supplementation (FAS) is widely recommended. However, the role of periconceptional FAS on neonatal birth weight remains unclear. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the independent effects of periconceptional FAS on the risks of small for gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA), and to test the potential mediation role of maternal homocysteine (Hcy) during pregnancy on the above significant associations. METHODS A large-scale prospective birth cohort was conducted in the Tongzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Beijing, China from June 2018 to August 2019. Periconceptional FAS was evaluated by a self-administered questionnaire on the day of recruitment in early pregnancy (<14th week of gestation). FAS was defined as participants who had taken folic acid (FA) supplements, FA-containing multivitamins, or other FA-containing nutritional supplements. Neonatal birth weight was measured at delivery. Maternal serum Hcy concentrations were measured in early and late pregnancy respectively. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the associations between FAS during preconception and/or early pregnancy and the occurrence of SGA or LGA. A mediation model was constructed to determine the role of maternal Hcy concentration on the above associations. RESULTS FAS before pregnancy (risk ratios [RR]=0.819, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.672-1.000, P=0.05), during early pregnancy (RR=0.622, 95%CI: 0.451-0.858) and from pre-pregnancy to early pregnancy (RR=0.564, 95%CI: 0.371-0.857) were associated with a lower risk of LGA. However, no significant association was found between periconceptional FAS and SGA birth. Maternal Hcy concentration in late pregnancy mediated the independent effects of maternal FAS during preconception and early pregnancy on the risks of LGA birth. CONCLUSIONS Periconceptional FAS was associated with a lower risk of LGA, which may be mediated by the reduced serum Hcy concentration in late pregnancy. The current recommendation of periconceptional FAS should be complied with to reduce the risks of LGA.

Abstract
Background and purpose Diabetic nephropathy leads to end-stage renal disease. The present study aimed to evaluate the prophylactic effect of pioglitazone-loaded mesoporous silica and alumina scaffold on renal function and the underlying mechanisms in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Experimental approach The mesoporous nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical methods from tetraethylorthosilicate and aluminum isopropoxide and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The soaking method was applied to load pioglitazone into the mesoporous silica and alumina. Subsequently, the most capable formulation was evaluated for lipid profile, blood glucose, renal function biomarkers, malondialdehyde, and kidney histopathological changes in diabetic rats. Findings/Results Pioglitazone loaded in the mesoporous included a superior release of about 80%. No interaction was observed in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction was shown crystalline. Scanning electron microscopy showed the size of the nanometer in the range of 100 - 300 nm. Mesoporous silica containing the drug significantly decreased urinary parameters, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, blood urea nitrogen, blood glucose, malondialdehyde, and creatinine. In addition, it showed increased high-density lipoprotein, significantly. The renal histopathological changes indicated improvement compared with the untreated diabetic group. Conclusion and implications It was concluded that the mesoporous was potent to serve as a promising drug carrier and a platform aimed at the delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs for improving oral bioavailability. Furthermore, it has the potential to provide a beneficial effect on the changes in diabetic parameters.

Abstract
Previous findings showed that anthocyanins from Lycium ruthenicum Murray (ACN) reduced HFD-induced hypercholesterolemia by regulating gut microbiota, but the mechanism has not been fully understood. The objective of this research was to know whether the cholesterol-lowering impact of ACN in HFD-induced ApoE-/- mice is related to the gut microbiota-bile acid (BA) metabolism. Twenty-four male ApoE-/- mice were divided into three groups: the Control group, the HFD group, and the HFD + ACN group. Here, we showed that ACN intervention reduced HFD-induced body weight serum concentrations of TC and LDL-C and ameliorated lipid accumulation in the liver and adipose tissues. Besides, ACN altered gut microbiota composition in HFD-fed ApoE-/- mice. Moreover, UHPLC-MS/MS analysis revealed that ACN intervention significantly increased the ratio of conjugated to unconjugated BAs in feces induced by HFD, attributed to the increase in conjugated BAs and decrease in unconjugated BAs. Finally, the correlation analysis indicated that the above changes in fecal BA profile were linked with an increase in Bifidobacterium, Allobaculum and a decrease in Ileibacterium, Helicobacter, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Blautia, Odoribacter, and Colidextribacter. In summary, ACN could alleviate HFD-induced hypercholesterolemia in ApoE-/- mice, which was associated with the improvement of gut microbiota and modulation of fecal BA profile.

Abstract
Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a prevalent condition where diabetes is diagnosed during pregnancy, affecting both maternal and fetal outcomes. Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a circulating adipokine which belongs to the lipocalin family and acts as a specific carrier protein that delivers retinol (vitamin A) from the liver to the peripheral tissues. Growing data indicate that circulating RBP4 levels may positively correlate with GDM. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the potential relationship between circulating RBP4 levels and GDM when measured at various stages of pregnancy. Methods MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMCARE, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched to identify studies comparing pregnant women with and without GDM, whose circulating RBP4 levels were measured in at least one pregnancy trimester. Findings were reported using standardized mean difference (SMD) and random-effects models were used to account for variability among studies. Furthermore, the risk of bias was assessed using the RoBANS tool. Results Out of the 34 studies identified, 32 were included in the meta-analysis (seven with circulating RBP4 levels measured in the first trimester, 19 at 24-28 weeks, and 14 at >28 weeks of pregnancy). RBP4 levels were statistically higher in the GDM group than in controls when measured during all these pregnancy stages, with the noted RBP4 SMD being 0.322 in the first trimester (95% CI: 0.126-0.517; p < 0.001; 946 GDM cases vs. 1701 non-GDM controls); 0.628 at 24-28 weeks of gestation (95% CI: 0.290-0.966; p < 0.001; 1776 GDM cases vs. 1942 controls); and 0.875 at >28 weeks of gestation (95% CI: 0.252-1.498; p = 0.006; 870 GDM cases vs. 1942 non-GDM controls). Significant study heterogeneity was noted for all three pregnancy timepoints. Conclusion The present findings indicate consistently higher circulating RBP4 levels in GDM cases compared to non-GDM controls, suggesting the potential relevance of RBP4 as a biomarker for GDM. However, the documented substantial study heterogeneity, alongside imprecision in effect estimates, underscores the need for further research and standardization of measurement methods to elucidate whether RBP4 can be utilized in clinical practice as a potential GDM biomarker. Abstract
Background Vitamin D deficiency is widely prevalent among the elderly, posing significant health risks. This study aims to determine the global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted, examining databases including Scientific Information Database (SID), Medline (PubMed), ScienceDirect, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar until January 2023. The publication bias of the studies was assessed using the I2 test of heterogeneity and the Egger test. Results The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, defined as levels below 20 ng or 50 nmol was found to be 59.7% (95% CI 45.9-72.1). Furthermore, a review of six studies involving 6748 elderly individuals showed a prevalence of 27.5% (95% CI 21.8-34.1) for deficiency defined between 20 and 30 ng or 50-75 nmol. Additionally, a meta-analysis of seven studies with a sample size of 6918 elderly individuals reported a prevalence of 16% (95% CI 10.2-24.1) for deficiency defined above 30 nmol or 75 nmol. Conclusion The results of the present study reveal that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among the elderly is high and requires the attention of health policymakers at the World Health Organization to prioritize extensive information dissemination and screening to mitigate the adverse effects on their quality of life. Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have shown that retinol-binding protein (RBP) is linked to diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. However, no studies have elucidated the relationship between RBP and diabetic cognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE To determine whether the change characteristics of serum RBP are associated with alterations in cognitive functioning in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS In this study, 252 patients with T2DM and 34 people as healthy controls were included. According to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the diabetic subjects were divided into the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) group and the Non-MCI group. Demographic characteristics and clinical indicators as well as serum RBP levels were analyzed. RESULTS The serum RBP levels in the MCI group were lower compared with the Non-MCI group (P = 0.02). The level of RBP was higher in the diabetes without MCI group than in the healthy control (P < 0.001). Serum RBP levels were positively correlated with MoCA scores (r = 0.178, P = 0.003). Binary Logistic regression model analysis showed that low RBP [odds ratio (OR) = 0.936], old age (OR = 1.074), high fasting blood glucose (OR = 1.164), and low fasting C-peptide (OR = 0.722) may be independent risk factors for diabetic MCI. The ROC curve of serum RBP for predicting diabetic MCI showed that the area under the curve was 0.630. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed an association between serum RBP and diabetic MCI. Serum RBP levels in diabetic MCI are lower and correlated with cognitive function.

Abstract
To date, few studies have investigated the toxicological effects of the combined use of amphetamine and heroin in the heart. Hence, the aim of this study was to identify indicators for clinical evaluation and prevention of cardiac injury induced by the combined use of amphetamine and heroin. Four different groups were analyzed: (1) normal group (n=25;average age=35 ± 6.8); (2) heart disease group (n=25;average age=58 ± 17.2); (3) drug abusers (n = 27; average age = 37 ± 7.7); (4) drug abstainers (previous amphetamine-heroin users who had been drug-free for more than two weeks; n = 22; average age = 35 ± 5.6). The activity of MMPs, and levels of TNF-α, IL-6, GH, IGF-I, and several serum biomarkers were examined to evaluate the impact of drug abuse on the heart. The selected plasma biomarkers and classic cardiac biomarkers were significantly increased compared to the normal group. The zymography data showed the changes in cardiac-remodeling enzymes MMP-9 and MMP-2 among combined users of amphetamine and heroin. The levels of TNF-α and IL-6 only increased in the heart disease group. Growth hormone was increased; however, IGF-I level decreased with drug abuse and the level was not restored by abstinence. We speculated that the amphetamine-heroin users might pose risk to initiate heart disease even though the users abstained for more than two weeks. The activity change of MMP-9 and MMP-2 can be a direct reason affecting heart function. The indirect reason may be related to liver damage by drug abuse reduce IGF-1 production to protect heart function.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune non-scarring hair loss. The role of micronutrients such as iron, zinc, and vitamins, especially vitamin D, on the natural hair cycle is well defined in literature. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between vitamin D and CRP levels in patients with alopecia areata. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed from beginning of October 2020 until end of December 2021. Alopecia areata patients over 18 years of age gave their written consent to participate in the study. The severity of the patients' disease was assessed using the Severity of Alopecia Tool. Serum vitamin D and CRP levels were measured and CBC and LFT were also performed. RESULTS There were significant differences between the patients with the localized form of AA and its universal form in the following variables: Vitamin D levels, SALT score, WBC, ALKP, and CRP. There was also a significant inverse correlation between CRP and vitamin D levels (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency is associated with higher CRP levels, and patients with low serum vitamin D and high CRP levels are at a higher risk of developing the universalis form of AA; therefore, these patients should undergo more aggressive treatments.

Abstract
The synthesis and metabolism of bile acids (BAs) have been implicated in various metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes. Dietary polyphenols, as natural antioxidants, play a vital role in synthesizing and metabolizing bile acids. This paper reviews the mechanism of dietary polyphenols involved in bile acid (BA) synthesis and metabolism. The impact of different gut microorganisms on BA profiles is discussed in detail. The regulation of BA metabolism by dietary polyphenols can be divided into two modes: (1) dietary polyphenols directly activate/inhibit farnesol X receptor (FXR) and Takeda G protein-coupled receptor (TGR5); (2) dietary polyphenols regulate BA synthesis and metabolism through changes in intestinal microorganisms. Research on direct activation/inhibition of FXR and TGR5 by polyphenols should be ramped up. In addition, the effect of dietary polyphenols on intestinal microorganisms has been paid more and more attention and has become a target that cannot be ignored.

Abstract
Background Hematological inflammatory indices are currently suggested to assess systemic inflammation. This study aims to investigate a vitamin D supplementation effect on hematological indices of inflammation in rats. Method Forty-eight middle-aged male rats were allocated into a normal diet (ND) group (10% fat) and a high-fat diet (HFD) group (60% fat). The animals were fed for 26 weeks. After this period, each group was randomly divided into three subgroups, each of 8 rats: Group (1): animals were fed the ND and HFD containing 1 IU/g vitamin D for 4 months, group (2): animals were fed the ND and HFD containing 6 IU/g vitamin D for 4 months and group (3): animals were euthanized to evaluate the HFD effect. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, white blood cell count (WBCs), platelet count, platelet crit (PCT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) were measured. Results The HFD, significantly increased body weight, PCT, PDW, PLR, NLR, and MLR and significantly reduced serum vitamin D levels compared to the ND (P < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in food intake, MPV, PDW, and NLR after vitamin D supplementation in the ND-fed group (P < 0.05). A significant reduction in platelet count, PCT, and MLR was observed after vitamin D supplementation in HFD-fed rats (P < 0.05). Conclusions In our study, some hemogram-derived inflammatory indices were higher in the HFD-fed group, and vitamin D supplementation lowering effects on some hematological indices were seen in both ND and HFD groups.

Abstract
Oxidative stress contributes to defective antioxidant defenses, which may lead to type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study aimed to elucidate the T2D risks and antioxidant defenses by investigating the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), vitamin A, and vitamin E status. We observed 102 participants aged 35-66 years from Sung Neon, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The blood samples were collected to measure the SOD, CAT, vitamin A, and vitamin E concentrations. The SOD and CAT activities were inversely associated with T2D risk. When compared with participants in the highest quartile of SOD and CAT, those in the lowest quartile for T2D risk obtained multivariable-adjusted odds ratios of 4.77 (SOD: 95% confident interval CI, 1.01-22.40; p = 0.047) and 4.22 (CAT: 95% CI, 1.07-16.60; p = 0.039). The possible influencing factors (e.g., physical activity, total cholesterol, and triglyceride) might mediate the association of SOD and CAT with T2D risk. Meanwhile, the relationship between vitamin A and vitamin E concentrations and T2D risk was insignificant. In conclusion, lower concentrations of antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD and CAT) may be an additional risk factor for T2D.

Abstract
Bone metabolism constitutes the intricate processes of matrix deposition, mineralization, and resorption. Any imbalance in these processes leads to traumatic bone injuries and serious disease conditions. Therefore, bone remodeling plays a crucial role during the regeneration process maintaining the balance between osteoblastogenesis and osteoclastogenesis. Currently, numerous phytobiologics are emerging as the new therapeutics for the treatment of bone-related complications overcoming the synthetic drug-based side effects. They can either target osteoblasts, osteoclasts, or both through different mechanistic pathways for maintaining the bone remodeling process. Although phytobiologics have been widely used since tradition for the treatment of bone fractures recently, the research is accentuated toward the development of osteogenic phytobioactives, constituent-based drug designing models, and efficacious delivery of the phytobioactives. To achieve this, different plant extracts and successful isolation of their phytoconstituents are critical for osteogenic research. Hence, this review emphasizes the phytobioactives based research specifically enlisting the plants and their constituents used so far as bone therapeutics, their respective isolation procedures, and nanotechnological interventions in bone research. Also, the review enlists the vast array of folklore plants and the newly emerging nano-delivery systems in treating bone injuries as the future scope of research in the phytomedicinal orthopedic applications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oxidative stress is linked to the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Maternal antioxidant vitamins in early pregnancy may play a role in GDM occurrence. We aimed to investigate the associations of vitamins A and E in early pregnancy with the risk of GDM and to explore whether these antioxidant vitamins can be biomarkers for the early prediction of GDM. METHODS We carried out a prospective cohort study conducted in Beijing and enrolled pregnant women (n = 667) with vitamins A and E measurements at 9 weeks (IQR 8-10) of gestation and having one-step GDM screened with a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. RESULTS The vitamin A levels in early pregnancy were significantly higher in women with GDM than in those without GDM (p < 0.0001) and positively correlated with fasting blood glucose. In multivariate models, vitamin A levels were significantly associated with GDM (OR, 1.46; 95% CI: 1.14-1.88; p = 0.0032) per SD. A significant trend of risk effect on GDM risk across quartiles of vitamin A was observed (ptrend = 0.016). No significant association of serum vitamin E with GDM was observed overall. However, a noted trend of protective effect on GDM risk across quartiles of vitamin E/cholesterol ratio was observed (ptrend = 0.043). In ROC analysis, the multivariate model consisting of vitamin A and other risk factors showed the best predictive performance (AUC: 0.760; 95% CI: 0.705-0.815; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of vitamin A in early pregnancy were significantly associated with an increased risk of GDM. Vitamin A has the potential to be a biomarker indicating pathogenesis of GDM.

Abstract
CONTEXT Angiopoietin-like protein 6 (ANGPTL6) is a hepatokine, which, in animal studies, improves insulin sensitivity and increases energy expenditure to counteract insulin resistance. OBJECTIVE Evaluate in a human population, the role of serum ANGPTL6 in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or its presence in fetal circulation. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 190 women (115 controls and 75 GDM) and their offspring were studied. Insulin, glucose, ANGPTL6, retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), and retinol, as well as leptin and adiponectin, were determined in maternal serum obtained at term and from umbilical artery blood at delivery. RESULTS At term, pregnant women with GDM showed higher serum concentrations of ANGPTL6, insulin, homeostatic model assessment, and apo-RBP4 (free RBP4) than controls but not of glucose, which remained similar in both groups. Also, in arterial cord serum, ANGPTL6 concentration was increased in GDM neonates with respect to the control group (201 ± 12 ng/mL vs 119 ± 8 ng/mL, respectively). No effect of maternal insulin treatment of some GDM mothers in neonates of either sex on ANGPTL6 levels was observed. In GDM, circulating ANGPTL6 showed no correlation with glucose or insulin concentration or with neonatal adiposity. However, in control pregnancies, the variation in glucose concentration was positively correlated with ANGPTL6 concentration, both in maternal and in cord samples, and cord ANGPTL6 was negatively correlated with neonatal fat mass. Furthermore, in control pregnant women, serum concentrations of ANGPTL6 and apo-RBP4 were negatively correlated. CONCLUSION Serum ANGPTL6 levels are associated with maternal glucose homeostasis and fetal adiposity in normal pregnancy. ANGPTL6 levels in maternal and cord serum GDM pregnancy at term are increased, although its mechanism and physiological role are unknown yet.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We hypothesize higher air pollution and fewer greenness exposures jointly contribute to metabolic syndrome (MetS), as mechanisms on cardiometabolic mortality. METHODS We studied the samples in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We included 1755 participants in 2012, among which 1073 were followed up in 2014 and 561 in 2017. We used cross-sectional analysis for baseline data and the generalized estimating equations (GEE) model in a longitudinal analysis. We examined the independent and interactive effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) on MetS. Adjustment covariates included biomarker measurement year, baseline age, sex, ethnicity, education, marriage, residence, exercise, smoking, alcohol drinking, and GDP per capita. RESULTS At baseline, the average age of participants was 85.6 (SD: 12.2; range: 65-112). Greenness was slightly higher in rural areas than urban areas (NDVI mean: 0.496 vs. 0.444; range: 0.151-0.698 vs. 0.133-0.644). Ambient air pollution was similar between rural and urban areas (PM2.5 mean: 49.0 vs. 49.1; range: 16.2-65.3 vs. 18.3-64.2). Both the cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis showed positive associations of PM2.5 with prevalent abdominal obesity (AO) and MetS, and a negative association of NDVI with prevalent AO. In the longitudinal data, the odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence interval-CI) of PM2.5 (per 10 μg/m3 increase) were 1.19 (1.12, 1.27), 1.16 (1.08, 1.24), and 1.14 (1.07, 1.21) for AO, MetS and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), respectively. NDVI (per 0.1 unit increase) was associated with lower AO prevalence [OR (95% CI): 0.79 (0.71, 0.88)], but not significantly associated with MetS [OR (95% CI): 0.93 (0.84, 1.04)]. PM2.5 and NDVI had a statistically significant interaction on AO prevalence (pinteraction: 0.025). The association between PM2.5 and MetS, AO, elevated fasting glucose and reduced HDL-C were only significant in rural areas, not in urban areas. The association between NDVI and AO was only significant in areas with low PM2.5, not under high PM2.5. CONCLUSIONS We found air pollution and greenness had independent and interactive effect on MetS components, which may ultimately manifest in pre-mature mortality. These study findings call for green space planning in urban areas and air pollution mitigation in rural areas.

Abstract
Signalling between the tissues integrating synthesis, transformation and utilization of energy substrates and their regulatory hormonal axes play a substantial role in the development of metabolic disorders. Interactions between cytokines, particularly liver derived hepatokines and adipokines, secreted from adipose tissue, constitute one of major areas of current research devoted to metabolic dysregulation. The thyroid exerts crucial influence on the maintenance of basal metabolic rate, thermogenesis, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, while its dysfunction promotes the development of metabolic disorders. In this review, we discuss the interplay between three adipokines: fatty acid binding protein type 4, fetuin-A, retinol binding protein type 4 and thyroid hormones, that shed a new light onto mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, cardiovascular complications, obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes accompanying thyroid dysfunction. Furthermore, we summarize clinical findings on those cytokines in the course of thyroid disorders.

Abstract
PURPOSE The associations between blood retinol, retinol-binding protein (RBP) concentrations and diabetes mellitus were inconsistent in literature. The objective is to investigate these associations by a systematic review and meta-analysis and provide basis for clinical intervention. METHODS PubMed, Web of science, and Cochrane databases were searched from the beginning to July 1, 2021. A total of 13 studies on retinol and 31 studies on RBP are included in the current meta-analysis. RESULTS The blood retinol concentration was significantly lower in the type I diabetes mellitus (T1DM) [standardized mean difference (SMD) (95% CI): - 0.59 (- 0.81, - 0.37), P < 0.01] and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients [SMD (95% CI): - 0.54 (- 0.87, - 0.20), P < 0.01] than in the controls. However, the difference was not significant between the type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and the controls. The RBP concentration was significantly higher in the diabetic patients than in the controls [SMD (95% CI): 0.24 (0.12, 0.35), P < 0.01]. Particularly, the RBP concentration was significantly higher in the T2DM and GDM patients. CONCLUSION The blood retinol concentration was negatively associated with T1DM and GDM, while the blood RBP concentration was positively associated with T2DM and GDM. Future work should use a more sensitive retinol measurement method like retinol isotope dilution method to confirm whether blood retinol concentration differs between the diabetes patients and the controls.

Abstract
Obesity in childbearing women leads to pregnancy-related complications such as gestational diabetes mellitus, pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorders, and macrosomia. Weight loss helps reduce these complications. Studies show bariatric surgery reduces obesity-related complications during and after pregnancy. However, bariatric surgery might be associated with adverse outcomes, such as low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age infants. In addition, several studies suggest pregnancy occurring less than a year post-bariatric surgery adversely affects pregnancy outcomes and causes micronutrients deficiency since the dramatic weight loss occurs in the first year. These adverse outcomes may lead to nutritional malabsorption, such as anemia and low vitamin B12 and folic acid levels. The review aims to overview obesity-related complications during pregnancy and the benefits and risks of bariatric surgery on pregnancy outcomes and maternal nutrition status.

Abstract
Background With increasing life expectancy and the aging population of most countries, attention to the diseases of old age has also increased. Due to the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly, the present study was designed and performed to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin D levels in Iranian elderly with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods This study was conducted on an elderly population of Birjand (60 and older) in the urban and rural areas of the city. In 1325 elderly men and women, with age range of 60 and older, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, anthropometric measurements and laboratory variables were measured. Results Twenty-eight percent of the elderly participants in the study had vitamin D deficiency. We found that participants with higher 25(OH)D had lower odds for elevated waist circumference (WC) (OR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.83-0.98), reduced HDL (OR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.86-0.97) and elevated fasting blood sugar (FBS) (OR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.89-0.98). We not found any significant association between 25(OH)D levels and other MetS components. Conclusion Higher 25(OH)D levels in the elderly are linked to a reduced prevalence of MetS and, specifically, higher levels of favorable HDL-C, WC and FBS. Further intervention studies are needed to substantiate the results of this study.

Abstract
It has been extensively claimed that endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) is related to lipid accumulation in mammals, but little is known in fish. This study aims at elucidating the role of ER stress in mediating lipid accumulation induced by monounsaturated oleic acid (OA) with a focus on the transcriptional level. We treated the adipocytes of grass carp with 200 μM and 400 μM OA, respectively, while the control group was treated with 2% bovine serum albumin (BSA). The results showed that cell viability was significantly improved, while 400 μM OA treatment promoted neutral lipid accumulation along with stimulating ER stress more obviously. Although lipolysis and fatty acid β-oxidation were activated simultaneously, the primary effect of OA seems to be promotion of lipid accumulation. To further explore whether ER stress affects lipid accumulation, 4-phenyl butyric acid (4-PBA), an effective inhibitor of ER stress, was used to pretreat the cells for 4 h. Unsurprisingly, it was found that the mRNA expressions of genes linked with ER stress were decreased. Intracellular triglyceride (TG) content was also decreased, which was in accordance with the mRNA expressions of adipogenic and lipogenic transcription factors as well as their target genes. Collectively, our data shows that ER stress may take part in OA-induced lipid accumulation in adipocytes via activating adipogenesis and lipogenesis. Based on this, strategies for protecting ER could be used to alleviate excessive accumulation of lipid in grass carp adipose tissue.

Abstract
AIMS We prospectively evaluated the association of circulating retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) levels in early pregnancy and risk of incident gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in pregnant women. METHODS A nested case-control study was conducted among 332 women who developed GDM and 664 matched controls based on the Tongji-Shuangliu Birth Cohort. GDM was diagnosed during 24-28 weeks of gestation according to the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Group criteria. Serum RBP4 levels in early pregnancy (6-15 weeks of gestation) were determined by ELISA assay. Multivariable conditional logistic regression models were used to analyse the association and generated the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). EMBASE and PubMed were searched up to 30 November 2020 to identify studies investigating the association between blood RBP4 levels in early pregnancy and incident GDM. RESULTS In the multivariable model with adjustment of potential risk factors, the OR comparing the extreme quartiles of serum RBP4 levels was 2.26 (95% CI: 1.34, 3.81; p for trend <0.001), and each standard deviation (SD) increment of RBP4 was associated with 1.39-fold (95% CI: 1.15, 1.69) higher risk of GDM. The results were confirmed in a meta-analysis that included additional four studies with an overall OR of 1.47 (95% CI: 1.18, 1.83) per 1-SD increment of RBP4. CONCLUSIONS Serum RBP4 levels in early pregnancy, independent of metabolic risk factors, are positively associated with the risk of GDM in pregnant women. Our findings may provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the aetiology of GDM.

METHODS Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study among adults aged 45 years or older were analyzed. Participants who were recruited in the study in 2011-2012 without MetS and successfully followed up to 2015-2016 were included in our final analysis. Logistic regressions were applied to examine the prospective associations of baseline and changes in hs-CRP with incident MetS and estimate corresponding odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). A meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize effect estimates from our findings and other cohort studies on this topic. RESULTS Among 4,116 participants, 535 developed MetS after a 4-year follow-up. Compared with the participants with hs-CRP in the lowest quartile, those with hs-CRP in the second, third, and highest quartiles had higher odds of MetS, with multivariable-adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of 1.51 (1.12, 2.06), 1.50 (1.11, 2.04), and 1.83 (1.37, 2.47). For the hs-CRP changes, ORs (95% CIs) were 3.24 (2.51, 4.02), 3.34 (2.56, 4.38), and 3.34 (2.54, 4.40) respectively. One unit (log of 1 mg/L) increase in hs-CRP was associated with 23% higher risk of MetS (OR 1.23; 95% CI 1.10, 1.38). In a meta-analysis of 6 cohort studies, the pooled relative risk for MetS was 1.63 (1.38, 1.93) for the highest versus lowest level of hs-CRP. In addition, the pooled relative risk for MetS was 1.29 (1.05, 1.59) for each unit increase of hs-CRP after log-transformation. CONCLUSIONS Both higher baseline hs-CRP and longitudinal hs-CRP increases were associated with higher risks of incident MetS. Individuals with high hs-CRP levels may need to be closely monitored for future risk of MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolomics is a field of omics science that involves the comprehensive measurement of small metabolites in biological samples. It is increasingly being used to study exercise physiology and exercise-associated metabolism. However, the field of exercise metabolomics has not been extensively reviewed or assessed. OBJECTIVE This review on exercise metabolomics has three aims: (1) to provide an introduction to the general workflow and the different metabolomics technologies used to conduct exercise metabolomics studies; (2) to provide a systematic overview of published exercise metabolomics studies and their findings; and (3) to discuss future perspectives in the field of exercise metabolomics. METHODS We searched electronic databases including Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the SpringerLink academic journal database between January 1st 2000 and September 30th 2020. RESULTS Based on our detailed analysis of the field, exercise metabolomics studies fall into five major categories: (1) exercise nutrition metabolism; (2) exercise metabolism; (3) sport metabolism; (4) clinical exercise metabolism; and (5) metabolome comparisons. Exercise metabolism is the most popular category. The most common biological samples used in exercise metabolomics studies are blood and urine. Only a small minority of exercise metabolomics studies employ targeted or quantitative techniques, while most studies used untargeted metabolomics techniques. In addition, mass spectrometry was the most commonly used platform in exercise metabolomics studies, identified in approximately 54% of all published studies. Our data indicate that biomarkers or biomarker panels were identified in 34% of published exercise metabolomics studies. CONCLUSION Overall, there is an increasing trend towards better designed, more clinical, mass spectrometry-based metabolomics studies involving larger numbers of participants/patients and larger numbers of metabolites being identified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND About 20-40 % of autistic people experience a phenomenon of regression. Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) plays an important role as an inflammatory neurotrophic adipokine and is a promising mediator of the fat-brain axis. Abnormal fatty acid metabolism and lipid mediators have been reported to be related to the etiological mechanism in autism, and amelioration of impaired lipid metabolism can be recognized as a treatment strategy for autism. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between RBP4, lipids, and the autistic regression phenomenon, and to discuss their potentials as biomarkers for the autistic regression phenomenon. METHODS A total of 60 autistic individuals (18 with regression phenomenon, 42 without regression phenomenon) (ASD group) and 36 healthy controls were enrolled in this case-control study. The levels of RBP4, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDLC), low-density lipoprotein (LDLC), and triglyceride (TG) were measured. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) is used to assess the severity of autism. Ethical measures were performed in compliance with the current Declaration of Helsinki and written informed consent was obtained from the parents before enrollment of the children and adolescents. RESULTS Compared with control subjects, autistic individuals had lower levels of TC (P = 0.007), RBP4 (P = 0.001), and HDLC (P = 0.027). The levels of RBP4 in ASD group were positively correlated with TG (r = 0.355, P = 0.005), HDLC (r = 0.257, P = 0.047), TG/TC (r = 0.376, P = 0.003) and TG/LDLC (r = 0.363, P = 0.004), and were negatively correlated with CARS (r=-0.296, P = 0.003). Further logistic regression demonstrated that decreased RBP4 concentration was associated with the presentation of the autistic regression phenomenon even after the adjustment of the potential confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS Serum RBP4 is associated with the autistic regression phenomenon and the severity of ASD. Further studies are needed to expound whether decreased RBP4 participates in the development of the autistic regression phenomenon.

Abstract
A ratiometric fluorescent probe with a large emission shift was developed for the accurate measurement of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in sophisticated pyroptosis signaling pathways. The results reported here demonstrate that H2O2, as a principal member of ROS, is a critical upstream signaling molecule in regulating pyroptosis.

Abstract
Introduction: Gestational diabetes (GDM), defined as hyperglycemia with onset or initial recognition during pregnancy, has a rising prevalence paralleling the rise in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and obesity. GDM is associated with short-term and long-term consequences for both mother and child. Therefore, it is crucial we efficiently identify all cases and initiate early treatment, reducing fetal exposure to hyperglycemia and reducing GDM-related adverse pregnancy outcomes. For this reason, GDM screening is recommended as part of routine pregnancy care. The current screening method, the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), is a lengthy, cumbersome and inconvenient test with poor reproducibility. Newer biomarkers that do not necessitate a fasting sample are needed for the prompt diagnosis of GDM. The aim of this scoping review is to highlight and describe emerging protein biomarkers that fulfill these requirements for the diagnosis of GDM. Materials and Methods: This scoping review was conducted according to preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines for scoping reviews using Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, Embase and Web of Science with a double screening and extraction process. The search included all articles published in the literature to July 2020. Results: Of the 3519 original database citations identified, 385 were eligible for full-text review. Of these, 332 (86.2%) were included in the scoping review providing a total of 589 biomarkers studied in relation to GDM diagnosis. Given the high number of biomarkers identified, three post hoc criteria were introduced to reduce the items set for discussion: we chose only protein biomarkers with at least five citations in the articles identified by our search and published in the years 2017-2020. When applied, these criteria identified a total of 15 biomarkers, which went forward for review and discussion. Conclusions: This review details protein biomarkers that have been studied to find a suitable test for GDM diagnosis with the potential to replace the OGTT used in current GDM screening protocols. Ongoing research efforts will continue to identify more accurate and practical biomarkers to take GDM screening and diagnosis into the 21st century.

Abstract
Vitamin A (VA), which is stored in several forms in most tissues, is required to maintain metabolite homeostasis and other processes, including the visual cycle, energy balance, epithelial cell integrity, and infection resistance. In recent years, VA molecules, also known as retinoids, have been extensively explored and used in the treatment of skin disorders and immune-related tumors. To date, several observational and interventional studies have explored the relationship between VA status and the pathogenesis of diabetes. In particular, VA micronutrients have been shown to regulate pancreatic development, β-cell function, pancreatic innate immune responses, and pancreatic stellate cells phenotypes through multiple mechanisms. However, there are still many problems to be proven or resolved. In this review, we summarize and discuss recent and available evidence on VA biological metabolism in the pancreas. Analysis of the effects of VA on metabolism in the pancreas will contribute to our understanding of the supportive physiological roles of VA in pancreas protection.

Objectives Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress causes adipose tissue dysfunction and chronic inflammation in obesity. Royal jelly (RJ) and tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) are reported to ameliorate inflammation. However, the improving effects of RJ and TRF on inflammation from ER stress modulating view have not been assessed so far. Hence, we investigated the effect of RJ and TRF on ER stress and some adipose tissue-derived inflammatory markers in the high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. Wistar obese rats randomly allocated into 5 groups: HFD, calorie restriction diet (CRD), RJ + CRD, TRF + CRD, RJ + TRF + CRD. After 8-week intervention, adipose tissues and hypothalamus were dissected and serum was collected. Results RJ reduced glucose-regulated protein-78 (GRP78) expression as ER stress indicator in WAT and hypothalamus compared to CRD. Besides, RJ diminished the expression of inflammatory markers in white adipose tissue (WAT) and also decreased the serum concentration of them. TRF reduced inflammatory markers in the serum without remarkable effects on ER stress. Overall, RJ has protective effect against adipose tissue dysfunction and inflammation then suggested as a therapeutic approach to reduce some obesity-related complications. The impact of TRF in this regard is lower than RJ and limited to systemic inflammation improvement without remarkable changes in adipose tissue inflammation.
