Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a marker of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies have investigated association between AIP and all-cause mortality and specific-mortality in the general population. METHODS This study included data from 14,063 American adults. The exposure variable was the AIP, which was defined as log10 (triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). The outcome variables included all-cause mortality and specific-mortality. Survey-weighted cox regressions were performed to evaluate the relation between AIP and all-cause mortality and specific-mortality. Weighted restricted cubic spline was conducted to examin the non-linear relationship. RESULTS During 10 years of follow-up, we documented 2,077, 262, 854, and 476 cases of all-cause mortality, diabetes mortality, CVD mortality and cancer mortality, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, we found that atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) was significantly associated with an increased risk of diabetes mortality when comparing the highest to the lowest quantile of AIP in female (p for trend = 0.001) or participants older than 65 years (p for trend = 0.002). AIP was not significantly associated with all-cause mortality, CVD mortality and cancer mortality (p > 0.05). Moreover, a non-linear association was observed between AIP and all-cause mortality in a U-shape (p for non-linear = 0.0011), while a linear relationship was observed with diabetes mortality and non-diabetes mortality (p for linear < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS In this study, there is a no significant association between high AIP levels and a high risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Besides, a higher AIP was significantly associated with an increased risk of diabetes mortality, which only found in women older than 65 years. AIP was associated with all-cause mortality in a U-shape. This association could be explained by the finding that higher AIP predicted a higher risk of death from diabetes, and that lower AIP predicted a higher risk of death from non-diabetes causes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a critical metric for predicting cardiovascular outcomes. However, its associations with cardiovascular disease mortality (CVM) and all-cause mortality (ACM) remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the relationship between baseline AIP levels and CVM and ACM among a broad cohort of US adults. METHODS Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018), we analyzed 18,133 adults aged ≥ 18. Baseline triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were measured to calculate the AIP. Mortality outcomes were determined through linkage with the National Death Index database, with follow-up through December 31, 2019. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models examined the associations between baseline AIP and mortality risks. Additionally, restricted cubic splines were utilized to investigate potential non-linear relationships, with subgroup analyses conducted across strata defined by age, gender, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome to assess variability in these associations. RESULTS Over a median 95.0-month follow-up, there were 1870 all-cause deaths and 579 cardiovascular disease-related deaths. Our findings indicate a J-shaped association between the AIP and ACM (threshold = 0.0905); specifically, when baseline AIP exceeded 0.0905, a significant positive association with ACM emerged (hazard ratio, HR (95% confidence interval, CI): 1.61(1.08-2.37)). However, after adjusting for confounders, the relationship between AIP and CVM was not statistically significant (HR 1.31, 95% CI 0.93-1.86). Notably, in the 40-60-year age group, AIP was significantly positively associated with ACM and CVM, with HRs and 95% CIs of 1.51 (1.08v2.10) and 2.63 (1.39-4.98), respectively. CONCLUSIONS A J-shaped relationship was observed between baseline AIP levels and ACM within the general US population, with a threshold of 0.0905. Moreover, AIP could potentially be an effective predictor for future ACM or CVM, particularly among individuals aged 40-60. Further investigation is warranted to corroborate these findings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The most basic and well-known cause of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is atherosclerosis. One of the main factors causing atherosclerosis is dyslipidemia. We will evaluate whether specific ratios of dyslipidemia, such as the atherogenic plasma index (AIP) and LDL/HDL ratio, which have recently been used in practice, can help us to predict the complexity of PAD in the clinic. METHODS A total of 305 patients with PAD admitted to our clinic were retrospectively included in this study. After evaluation according to angiography images using TASC-II classification, patients were divided into TASC A-B and TASC C-D. AIP was evaluated with the following formula: Log (TG/HDL). Cut-off values for AIP and LDL/HDL were determined on the ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve. Logistic regression analysis were conducted to predict peripheral arterial disease complexity. RESULTS The mean ages of Group 1 (n:180, 68.3% male) and Group 2 (n:125, 77.6% male) patients were 64.10 ± 12.39 and 64.94 ± 11.12 years, respectively. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM, p < 0.016) and coronary artery disease (CAD, p < 0.001) was higher in group 2. Group 2 had higher TG (p = 0.045), LDL-C (p = 0.004), AIP (p = 0.010), LDL/HDL (p < 0.001), and lower HDL-C (p = 0.015). In multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluating parameters in predicting PAD complexity, DM (OR: 1.66 Cl 95%: 1.01-2.73 p = 0.045), CAD (OR: 2.86 Cl 95%: 1.75-4.69 p < 0.001) and LDL/HDL (OR: 1.47 Cl 95%: 1.10-1.96 p = 0.008) were independent variables. CONCLUSION In our study, we compared LDL/HDL ratio and AIP in PAD for the first time in the literature and showed that LDL/HDL ratio is a more valuable ratio and an independent predictor of PAD complexity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary artery disease (CAD) is an atherosclerotic disease of an inflammatory nature. Previous studies examining the relationship between triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol have highlighted the importance of plasma atherogenic index (AIP) as an important predictor of coronary heart disease. However, due to the lack of adequate information on this topic, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between AIP and coronary heart disease risk. RESULTS This study included 2,226 women and 1,690 men aged 35-70 years who participated in the Bandar Kong Cohort study and met the eligibility criteria. The data was collected using a checklist and questionnaires, which were designed by experienced individuals. After participants completed a registration form and gave informed consent, face-to-face interviews were conducted by trained experts. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire had been verified by the national cohort team prior to its use. The Ethics Committee of Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences (IR.HUMS.REC.1400.171) approved the study. Data from the initial cohort survey using SPSS software version 25, were analyzed to include several factors, including age, sex, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), physical activity level, socioeconomic status, AIP, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. The prevalence of coronary heart disease was found to be 7.5% higher in people with a BMI of 25 or higher. Also, Individuals with low physical activity had a higher prevalence. Individuals with CAD had significantly higher mean values for the AIP, age, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure (0.46, 57.50, 128.43, and 81.10, respectively) compared to those without CAD. Furthermore, patients with CAD had lower years of education (2649.45 and 3.59) than individuals without CAD (P < 0.05). Importantly, our findings showed that AIP increased the odds ratio of coronary heart disease by 1.86 as an independent risk factor. CONCLUSIONS Based on our investigation, the AIP is a valuable and independent predictive risk factor for coronary artery disease. This index can be utilized effectively due to its accessibility and affordability, making it a promising tool for risk assessment in clinical settings.

Abstract
Inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of the coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP). The newly developed inflammatory marker, pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), is associated with adverse cardiovascular events. This study investigated the predictive value of PIV for diagnosing CSFP in comparison to other inflammation-based markers. A total of 214 patients, 109 in the CSFP group and 105 in the normal coronary flow (NCF) group, were retrospectively included in the study. Coronary flow was calculated using the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction frame count method. In addition to PIV, other inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) were calculated for the patients. The average age of patients was 50.3 ± 8.4, with a male ratio of 55.1%. Compared to the NCF group, patients in the CSFP group had higher levels of hyperlipidemia, glucose, triglyceride, NLR, PLR, SII, and PIV, while their high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), was lower (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that HDL-C, glucose, triglyceride, and PIV were independent predictor factors for CSFP (p < 0.05). PIV is a strong and independent predictor factor for CSFP and superior in predicting CSFP compared to other inflammatory markers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent researches have found a strong correlation between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index or the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, there is a lack of research on non-invasive and rapid prediction of cardiovascular risk. We aimed to develop and validate a machine-learning model for predicting cardiovascular risk based on variables encompassing clinical questionnaires and oculomics. METHODS We collected data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The training dataset (80% from the year 2008 to 2011 KNHANES) was used for machine learning model development, with internal validation using the remaining 20%. An external validation dataset from the year 2012 assessed the model's predictive capacity for TyG-index or AIP in new cases. We included 32122 participants in the final dataset. Machine learning models used 25 algorithms were trained on oculomics measurements and clinical questionnaires to predict the range of TyG-index and AIP. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were used to evaluate the performance of our machine learning models. RESULTS Based on large-scale cohort studies, we determined TyG-index cut-off points at 8.0, 8.75 (upper one-third values), 8.93 (upper one-fourth values), and AIP cut-offs at 0.318, 0.34. Values surpassing these thresholds indicated elevated cardiovascular risk. The best-performing algorithm revealed TyG-index cut-offs at 8.0, 8.75, and 8.93 with internal validation AUCs of 0.812, 0.873, and 0.911, respectively. External validation AUCs were 0.809, 0.863, and 0.901. For AIP at 0.34, internal and external validation achieved similar AUCs of 0.849 and 0.842. Slightly lower performance was seen for the 0.318 cut-off, with AUCs of 0.844 and 0.836. Significant gender-based variations were noted for TyG-index at 8 (male AUC=0.832, female AUC=0.790) and 8.75 (male AUC=0.874, female AUC=0.862) and AIP at 0.318 (male AUC=0.853, female AUC=0.825) and 0.34 (male AUC=0.858, female AUC=0.831). Gender similarity in AUC (male AUC=0.907 versus female AUC=0.906) was observed only when the TyG-index cut-off point equals 8.93. CONCLUSION We have established a simple and effective non-invasive machine learning model that has good clinical value for predicting cardiovascular risk in the general population.

Abstract
Objectives Although the association of Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) with coronary artery disease (CAD) and atherosclerosis is known, the relationship between AIP and in-stent restenosis (ISR) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the relationship between AIP and ISR in patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) treated with drug-eluting stent (DES). Methods Patients with a history of DES implantation following stable angina were evaluated between January 2015 and November 2019 in this observational and retrospective study. 608 eligible patients were dichotomized into ISR+ (n=241) and ISR- (n=367). ISR was defined as the presence of 50% or greater stenosis. AIP was defined as log [TG/HDL-C]. Results AIP levels were significantly higher in patients who developed ISR compared with those who did not (0.33 [0.15-0.52] vs 0.06 [-0.08-0.21] respectively, p<0.001). The AUC value of AIP levels for predicting ISR was 0.746 (p<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that AIP, diabetes mellitus, higher LDL-C levels and lower LVEF values were independently associated with ISR. Conclusion Multivariate analysis revealed that AIP was strongly independently associated with ISR. Using this novel inexpensive and easily calculable index may provide early recognition of ISR in patients with SAP who were treated with DES.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) results from the systemic atherosclerotic process. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between plasma atherogenic index (AIP), a ratio of molar concentrations of triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol, and long-term outcomes after endovascular therapy (EVT) in patients with superficial femoral artery (SFA) stenosis. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated 673 patients who underwent EVT for PAD in our tertiary center between January 2015 and December 2020. In the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the AIP value with the optimum cutoff value was determined as 0.576 to detect the presence of major adverse limb events (MALEs). Patients were divided into two groups according to low AIP (<0.576 as group 1) and high AIP (>0.576 as group 2). RESULTS Among the major endpoints, long-term restenosis rates were significantly higher in patients in the high-AIP group than in the low-AIP group (p<.001). The lower extremity amputation rate was not statistically significant between the two groups. All-cause mortality rate (54 (31.6) versus 117 (68.4), p<.001) was significantly higher in patients in the high-AIP group than in the low-AIP group. In addition, the MALE rate (94 (29.2) versus 218 (62.1), p<.001) was significantly higher in patients in the high-AIP group than in those in the low-AIP group. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, we found that AIP is a significant independent predictor of long-term MALE in patients who underwent EVT for SFA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been demonstrated to be significantly associated with the incidence of prediabetes and diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the association between the AIP and undiagnosed diabetes in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. METHODS Among 113,650 ACS patients treated with coronary angiography at 240 hospitals in the Improving Care for Cardiovascular Disease in China-ACS Project from 2014 to 2019, 11,221 patients with available clinical and surgical information were included. We analyzed these patients' clinical characteristics after stratification according to AIP tertiles, body mass index (BMI) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. RESULTS The AIP was independently associated with a greater incidence of undiagnosed diabetes. The undiagnosed diabetes was significantly greater in the T3 group than in the T1 group after adjustment for confounders [T3 OR 1.533 (1.199-1.959) p < 0.001]. This relationship was consistent within normal weight patients and patients with an LDL-C level ≥ 1.8 mmol/L. In overweight and obese patients, the AIP was significantly associated with the incidence of undiagnosed diabetes as a continuous variable after adjustment for age, sex, and BMI but not as a categorical variable. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the AIP score, triglyceride (TG) concentration, and HDL-C concentration was 0.601 (0.581-0.622; p < 0.001), 0.624 (0.603-0.645; p < 0.001), and 0.493 (0.472-0.514; p = 0.524), respectively. A nonlinear association was found between the AIP and the incidence of undiagnosed diabetes in ACS patients (p for nonlinearity < 0.001), and this trend remained consistent between males and females. The AIP may be a negative biomarker associated with undiagnosed diabetes ranging from 0.176 to 0.738. CONCLUSION The AIP was significantly associated with the incidence of undiagnosed diabetes in ACS patients, especially in those with normal weight or an LDL-C level ≥ 1.8 mmol/L. A nonlinear relationship was found between the AIP and the incidence of undiagnosed diabetes, and this trend was consistent between male and female patients. The AIP may be a negative biomarker associated with undiagnosed diabetes and ranges from 0.176 to 0.738.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in participants with abnormal glucose metabolism have been linked in previous studies. However, it was unclear whether AIP control level affects the further CVD incidence among with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the association between AIP control level with risk of CVD in individuals with abnormal glucose metabolism. METHODS Participants with abnormal glucose metabolism were included from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. CVD was defined as self-reporting heart disease and/or stroke. Using k-means clustering analysis, AIP control level, which was the log-transformed ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in molar concentration, was divided into five classes. The association between AIP control level and incident CVD among individuals with abnormal glucose metabolism was investigated multivariable logistic regression analysis and application of restricted cubic spline analysis. RESULTS 398 (14.97%) of 2,659 participants eventually progressed to CVD within 3 years. After adjusting for various confounding factors, comparing to class 1 with the best control of the AIP, the OR for class 2 with good control was 1.31 (95% CI, 0.90-1.90), the OR for class 3 with moderate control was 1.38 (95% CI, 0.99-1.93), the OR for class 4 with worse control was 1.46 (95% CI, 1.01-2.10), and the OR for class 5 with consistently high levels was 1.56 (95% CI, 1.03-2.37). In restricted cubic spline regression, the relationship between cumulative AIP index and CVD is linear. Further subgroup analysis demonstrated that the similar results were observed in the individuals with agricultural Hukou, history of smoking, diastolic blood pressure ≥ 80mmHg, and normal body mass index. In addition, there was no interaction between the AIP control level and the subgroup variables. CONCLUSIONS In middle-aged and elderly participants with abnormal glucose metabolism, constant higher AIP with worst control may have a higher incidence of CVD. Monitoring long-term AIP change will contribute to early identification of high risk of CVD among individuals with abnormal glucose metabolism.

Abstract
Several studies have examined the association between CD36 rs1761667 polymorphism with cardiometabolic risk factors and metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to investigate the interactions between rs1761667 polymorphism and dietary patterns on the cardiometabolic risk factors and the risk of MetS in apparently healthy individuals aged 20-70 years. Food consumption data were acquired using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Dietary patterns were identified by factor analysis. CD36 rs1761667 was genotyped by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The gene-diet interaction was detected by the general linear model or logistic regression. Significant or marginally significant interactions were observed between healthy dietary pattern (HDP) and CD36 rs1761667 on weight (P = 0·006), BMI (P = 0·009), waist circumference (P = 0·005), hip circumference (P = 0·06), body muscle percentage (P = 0·02), body fat percentage (P = 0·09), TAG-glucose index (P = 0·057), atherogenic index of plasma (P = 0·07), the risk of MetS (P = 0·02), risk of abdominal obesity (P = 0·02) and elevated blood pressure (P = 0·07). Besides, a gene-diet interaction was detected between the traditional dietary pattern and rs1761667 variants on odds of hypertriglyceridaemia (P = 0·02). The adherence to HDP was associated with a lower weight, BMI and higher odds of HDL-cholesterol only in A-allele carriers. In conclusion, adherence to HDP (a diet with high fibre, fish and dairy products) can be more effective on some cardiometabolic risk factors and risk of MetS components in the A-allele carrier than the GG genotype of rs1761667 polymorphism. However, future studies are required to shed light on this issue.

Abstract
AIMS Chronic coronary syndrome is associated with several risk factors, such as dyslipidemia and hypertension. The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been demonstrated to be a biochemical risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). This study aimed to determine whether the AIP is an effective parameter for estimating obstructive CAD. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 345 patients (with a mean age of 62.2 ± 10.3; 63% male) who underwent coronary angiography were included in this study. Obstructive CAD is defined as having one or more vessels with a stenosis level of ≥50%. Depending on the presence of obstructive CAD, all patients were divided into two groups. The mean AIP value was found to be 0.538 ± 0.26 in the study group. The AIP values were significantly higher in the obstructive coronary artery group (AIP; 0.49 ± 0.26 vs. 0.58 ± 0.27, p = 0.002). According to a univariable analysis, AIP values were significantly associated with obstructive coronary artery disease [OR: 3.74 (CI 95% 1.62-8.64), p = 0.020]. The AIP was further adjusted for confounding risk factors in three multivariable analysis models and, all three models showed a significant association. According to an ROC analysis, 0.49 is the cut-off value for AIP, and a value above 0.49 indicates 50% coronary artpery stenosis. CONCLUSIONS The AIP may be used in the assessment of cardiovascular risk for patients with stable angina pectoris, and it may also be used to estimate obstructive CAD.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the potential association between the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP)-both considered surrogate markers for atherosclerosis-and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients diagnosed with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). We conducted a retrospective analysis, encompassing 715 consecutive patients with intermediate CCS risk, who presented at the outpatient clinic between June 2020 and August 2022. MACEs included non-fatal myocardial infarction, hospitalization for heart failure, cerebrovascular events, non-cardiac mortality, and cardiac mortality. The primary outcome was the composite occurrence of MACEs during the follow-up period. For time-to-event analysis of the primary outcome, we employed Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox proportional hazard models. The median age of the overall study population was 55 years, with a median follow-up duration of 17 months. Multivariate Cox regression analysis identified age, hypertension, Coronary Artery Disease-Reporting and Data System score, and TyG index as independent predictors of the primary outcome. Notably, individuals with high TyG levels exhibited a significantly higher primary outcome rate compared to those with low TyG levels (18.7% vs. 3.8%, p < 0.001). Similarly, patients with elevated TyG values demonstrated statistically higher rates of cerebrovascular events, hospitalizations for heart failure, non-fatal myocardial infarctions, non-cardiac mortality, and cardiac mortality. These findings suggest that TyG may serve as a predictive marker for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with CCS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) based on a single measurement is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), little is known about whether changes in AIP over time are related to incident CVD. We aimed to determine whether AIP trajectory, which reflects homogenous AIP trends for a particular period, is associated with CVD risk. METHODS Data from 5,843 participants of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) were analyzed. The KoGES had been conducted biennially from the baseline survey (2001-2002) to the eighth follow-up survey (2017-2018). The research design specifies the exposure period from baseline to the third follow-up, designates the latent period at the fourth follow-up, and establishes the event accrual period from the fifth to the eighth follow-up. During the exposure period, we identified two trajectories: a decreasing (n = 3,036) and an increasing group (n = 2,807) using latent variable mixture modeling. Information on CVD was collected initially through the self-reporting, followed by in depth person-to-person interview conducted by a well-trained examiner. During the event accrual period, the cumulative incidence rates of CVD between the two AIP trajectory groups were estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis with the log-rank test. Multiple Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The increasing AIP trajectory group had a significantly higher cumulative incidence rate of CVD than the decreasing AIP trajectory group. Compared to the decreasing AIP trajectory group, the increasing AIP trajectory group had a higher risk of incident CVD (HR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.02-1.69) after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSIONS The risk of incident CVD increased when the AIP level showed an increasing trend and remained high over a long period. This suggests that checking and managing the trajectory of the AIP can be a preventive strategy for incident CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a marker of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD), was related to the all-cause mortality and CVD-specific mortality in a U-shape in general population respectively. However, no studies have investigated these associations in hypertensive populations. Herein, this study aims to explore the relationship of AIP and all-cause mortality and CVD-specific mortality in patients with hypertension in order to provide some reference for the risk hierarchical management of hypertension. METHODS Demographic and clinical data of 17,382 adult patients with hypertension were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in 2005-2018 in this retrospective cohort study. We used weighted univariate COX regression analysis to screen the covariates, and that weighted univariate and multivariate COX regression analyses to explore the association between AIP and all-cause mortality and CVD-specific mortality with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses of age, gender, body mass index (BMI), CVD, diabetes mellitus (DM), antihyperlipidemic agents use, and hypotensive drugs use were also performed for further exploration of these relationships. RESULTS The average follow-up time was 97.10 months. A total of 2,844 patients died, and 971 of them died due to CVD. After adjusting for age, race, education level, marital status, poverty-income ratio (PIR), smoking, BMI, physical activity, antihyperlipidemic agents, DM, CVD, hypotensive drugs, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and total energy intake, we found that both low [HR = 1.18, 95%CI: (1.07-1.32)] and high [HR = 1.17, 95%CI: (1.03-1.33)] levels of AIP were linked to an increased risk of all-cause mortality, and the U-shape association between AIP and CVD-specific mortality was also found [low AIP level: HR = 1.26, 95%CI: (1.05-1.51); high AIP level: HR = 1.26, 95%CI: (1.06-1.49)]. Furthermore, these relationships were existed in patients whose BMI > 25, were non-Hispanic White, with non-CVD, non-DM, non-antihyperlipidemic agents, and used hypertension drug (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION AIP was associated with both all-cause mortality and CVD-specific mortality in patients with hypertension, but the specific role of AIP in prognosis in hypertensive populations is needed further exploration.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic risk factors at a young age pose a significant risk for developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Atherogenic dyslipidemia is highly associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome already in young age. It remains unclear whether cardiometabolic risk factors associate with the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP = log (TAG/HDL-C) in lean subjects with low atherogenic risk. As both the AIP and markers of cardiometabolic risk are continuous variables, we expected their association to be linear before the manifestation of obesity and atherogenic dyslipidemia. We analyzed the prevalence of increased atherogenic risk (AIP ≥ 0.11) in 2012 lean 14-to-20-year-old subjects (55% females) and the trends of cardiometabolic risk factors across the quartiles (Q) of AIP in a subgroup of 1947 (56% females) subjects with low atherogenic risk (AIP < 0.11). The prevalence of AIP ≥ 0.11 reached 3.6% in females and 8.5% in males. HDL-C, non-HDL-C, triglycerides, and the continuous metabolic syndrome score showed a stepwise worsening across the AIP quartiles in both sexes. Measures of obesity and insulin resistance were worse in Q4 vs. Q1 groups, and leukocyte counts were higher in Q4 and Q3 vs. Q1. Females in Q4 presented with a higher C-reactive protein and lower adiponectin, estradiol, and testosterone levels. The multivariate regression model selected non-HDL-C, QUICKI, and erythrocyte counts as significant predictors of AIP in males; and non-HDL-C and C-reactive protein in females. A question arises whether the lean individuals on the upper edge of low atherogenic risk are prone to earlier manifestation of metabolic syndrome and shift to the higher AIP risk group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Enormous efforts have been made to evaluate reliable, simple and practical indicators for predicting patients at risk of progression of cardiovascular disease events, whereby bariatric surgery has remained understudied. Thus, we performed this study to assess the effect of bariatric surgery procedures on atherogenicity and insulin resistance indicators. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND OUTCOME MEASURES Four hundred and forty-three class II obese (severely obese) patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or one anastomosis gastric bypass were followed up for 12 months after surgery. Atherosclerosis-related indicators were evaluated at baseline, as well as 6 and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS Atherogenic index of plasma, lipoprotein combine index, atherogenic coefficient, cholesterol index, Castelli's risk indices I and II, and triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol ratio (p<0.01) improved after 12 months. Additionally, bariatric surgery yielded a significantly reduced triglyceride glucose index. There was no significant difference between procedures in terms of indicators. The Spearman correlation test showed a significant inverse correlation between weight plus fat mass and atherosclerosis-related indicators as well as a positive correlation between percentage of excess weight loss and these indicators. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated three bariatric surgery procedures' ability to improve atherogenicity and insulin resistance in patients with obesity class II. The anti-atherogenicity effects can be partly assigned to the reduction of body weight and adipose tissue. Nevertheless, further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-ups are required to confirm our results.

Abstract
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition caused by a combination of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMR). MetS leads to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), both of which place a burden on not only the patients but also the healthcare system. Diagnostic criteria for MetS vary, and there is no universal tool to detect it. Recently, many studies have found positive associations between the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and some CMR factors. Therefore, a comprehensive review was needed to recapitulate these studies and qualitatively estimate the likelihood of AIP being associated with CMR. We aimed to review and summarise observational data on AIP and CMR factors and verify their association. Materials and Methods: A review of observational studies was conducted by searching “atherogenic index of plasma” in PubMed, One Search, and the Cochrane library. A total of 2068 articles were screened, and 32 were included after excluding paediatric, non-human and interventional studies, and those carried out on cohorts with conditions unrelated to MetS or on lipid-lowering medication. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess their quality. Results: Most studies that reported high waist circumference (WC), triglycerides (TG), insulin resistance (IR) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration, also reported high AIP. Few studies investigated blood pressure (BP) and some discrepancies existed between their results. Conclusion: AIP may be associated with WC, TG, IR, and HDL-C. It is unclear if AIP is associated with BP. The current study’s results should be used to inform futureward a meta-analysis to be seen quantitatively. It is also recommended that more cohort studies stratified by gender and ethnicity be performed to ascertain if AIP can predict MetS before it manifests.

Abstract
BackgroundTwo indices: visceral adiposity index (VAI) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) during several recent years were implemented into epidemiological studies for predicting of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and mortality risk. Our study aimed to evaluate the association of VAI and AIP with the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality among the Lithuanian urban population aged 45–72 years.MethodsIn the baseline survey (2006–2008), 7,115 men and women 45–72 years of age were examined within the framework of the international study Health, Alcohol and Psychosocial Factors in Eastern Europe (HAPIEE). Six thousand six hundred and seventy-one participants (3,663 women and 3,008 men) were available for statistical analysis (after excluding 429 respondents with the missed information on study variables) and for them, VAI and AIP were calculated. The questionnaire evaluated lifestyle behaviors, including smoking and physical activity. All participants in the baseline survey were followed up for all-cause and CVD mortality events until December 31st, 2020. Multivariable Cox regression models were applied for statistical data analysis.ResultsAfter accounting for several potential confounders, higher levels of VAI (compared 5th quintile to 1st quintile) were associated with significantly higher CVD mortality in men [Hazards ratio (HR) = 1.38] and all-cause mortality in women (HR = 1.54) after 10-year follow-up. CVD mortality significantly increased in men with 0 the highest AIP quintile compared with that for the lowest quintile (HR = 1.40). In women, all-cause mortality was significantly higher for the 4th quintile of AIP as compared with the 1st quintile (HR = 1.36).ConclusionsHigh-risk VAI levels were statistically significantly associated with all-cause mortality risk in men and women groups. The higher AIP level (5th quintile vs. 1st quintile—in men and 4th quintile vs. 1st quintile—in women) was significantly associated with increased mortality from CVD in the men group and increased all-cause mortality in the women group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemic strokes are primarily caused by intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. Nontraditional lipid parameters broaden traditional lipid profiles, better reflect the metabolism and interaction between different lipid components, and optimize the predictive ability of lipid profiles for atherosclerotic diseases. This research was carried out to investigate the predictive value of nontraditional lipid parameters for intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. METHODS The investigation collected data from inpatients who underwent cervical vascular ultrasonography, carotid CTA, cerebral artery CTA or MRA, and brain MRI or CT from December 2014 to December 2021. The nontraditional lipid parameters were calculated by collecting traditional lipid parameters. To evaluate the predictive power of nontraditional lipid parameters, logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were performed. RESULTS Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 545 patients were included. According to the imaging results, inpatients were divided into two groups, including no intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (n = 250) and intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (AS, n = 295). Among them, AS was further divided into three subgroups: intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS), extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ECAS) and combined intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (IECAS). Logistic regression analysis showed that nontraditional lipid parameters, including the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), TG/HDL-C, remnant cholesterol (RC), nonhigh-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), lipoprotein combine index (LCI), atherogenic coefficient (AC), Castelli's index-I (CRI-I) and Castelli's index-II (CRI-II), were significantly correlated with intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (P < 0.05). Compared with other nontraditional lipid parameters, regardless of adjusting for potential confounding factors, AIP had a greater OR value in ICAS (OR = 4.226, 95% CI: 1.681-10.625), ECAS (OR = 2.993, 95% CI: 1.119-8.003) and IECAS (OR = 4.502, 95% CI: 1.613-12.561). ROC curve analysis revealed that nontraditional lipid parameters had good predictive power for intracranial or extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis. CONCLUSIONS This Chinese hospital-based study demonstrates that nontraditional lipid parameters (AIP, LCI, RC, CRI-II, AC, CRI-I and non-HDL-C) are effective predictors of intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis, of which AIP may be a significant risk factor for predicting atherosclerotic arterial stenosis in the intracranial or extracranial regions.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The most frequent cause of mortality in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation, dyslipidemia, and decreased physical activity are some of the main risk factors for CVD. Siwan sand therapy is a type of traditional therapy used in Egypt to treat RA. The approach of this therapy depends on the experience of the healers. The aim of the current study was to compare the effects of three sessions of Siwan traditional therapy to five sessions on common CVD risk factors and physical function in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients (9 male and 21 female) were assigned into two groups of equal size: group (A) received three sessions of Siwan traditional therapy in the form of a sand bath. Group (B) received the same form of therapy for five days. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), lipid profile, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and a health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) were measured before and after treatment. Results: There was a significant increase above normal within group (A) for ESR (p = 0.001), triglycerides (TG; p = 0.015), total cholesterol (Tot-Chol; p = 0.0001), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL; p = 0.0001). However, there were no considerable differences in high-density lipoprotein (HDL; p = 0.106), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL; p = 0.213), AIP (p = 0.648), and HAQ (p = 0.875). For the second group, there were significant changes within group B only in Tot-Chol (p = 0.0001), HDL (p = 0.0001), VLDL (p = 0.0001), AIP (p = 0.008), and HAQ (p = 0.014). There was a significant difference between both groups regarding HDL (p = 0.027), LDL (p = 0.005), AIP (p = 0.029), ESR (p = 0.016), and HAQ (p = 0.036). Conclusions: For RA patients, five days of Siwan traditional therapy caused significant changes regarding inflammation, Tot-Chol, LDL, HDL, AIP, and functional activity when compared to three days of Siwan hot sand therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study evaluates the effect of a 3-month calorie restriction (CR) without snacking on the anthropometric parameters, Homeostatic Model Assesment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), and lipid profiles of female office workers with overweight or obesity, whose physical activity was limited during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-eight women aged 20-38 years (28.9±5.24) with low physical activity levels were divided into a non-snacking (NS) group (N = 21) and a snacking (S) group (N = 27) prior to the dietary intervention. Their daily energy intake during the intervention was lowered by 30% compared with the baseline level, and the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids and fiber in their diet was increased (to >30 g/day). The proportion of saturated fatty acids and simple carbohydrates was also reduced. The study participants were assessed at the baseline and post-intervention for anthropometric variables (body weight, body fat percentage BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio) and the concentrations of insulin, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Moreover, the values for HOMA-IR, the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and the ratios of TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, and LDL-C/HDL-C were calculated. RESULTS All anthropometric parameter values obtained post-intervention were lower than the baseline in both groups. The serum insulin concentration and HOMA-IR decreased respectively by an average of 6% and 25% in the NS group and 37% and 45% in the S group. The lipid profiles of all participants improved significantly, with the LDL-C concentration showing a more promising trend in the S group (decrease by 27%) than in the NS group (17%). CONCLUSIONS The study showed that CR improved the anthropometric parameters, HOMA-IR index, and lipid profiles of all participants. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2022;35(6):693-706.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of the study was to investigate the antihyperglycemic effect of L-Tartaric acid. BACKGROUND L-Tartaric acid is a natural product with possible beneficial effects on health. OBJECTIVE The goal of this work was to evaluate the antihyperglycemic and antidyslipidemic effects of L-Tartaric acid (L-TA) in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the first model, the effects of L-TA (10 and 40 mg/kg) on diabetes conditions induced by streptozotocin (STZ) in rats were investigated. In the second model, the effects of L-TA (40 and 80 mg/kg) on dyslipidemia induced by tyloxapol (Triton WR-1339) in rats were assessed. RESULTS L-TA (40 mg/kg) had improved all studied parameters. L-TA at 40 mg/kg was able to significantly reduce glycaemia, improve oral glucose tolerance (OGT), increase glycogen content in liver and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle, and ameliorate the lipidic profile and atherogenic indices in STZ-diabetic rats. CONCLUSION L-Tartaric acid was able to exhibit antihyperglycemic and antidyslipidemic effects in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Moreover, the antidyslipidemic effect of L-Tartaric acid was confirmed in tyloxapol-induced hyperlipidemic rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the latest reports, atherogenic indices have been related to acute coronary syndromes, stable coronary artery disease, heart failure and future cardiac events. Conventional atherosclerosis risk factors have been associated with mitral annular calcification (MAC), but data on the relationship between atherogenic indices and MAC are lacking. We aimed to investigate a possible relationship between MAC and atherogenic indices. METHODS In total 741 patients (n = 427 with MAC and n = 314 without MAC) who were examined in our cardiology clinic from February 2016 to October 2021 were recruited in the study. Mitral annular calcification was diagnosed by transthoracic 2-dimensional echocardiography. The atherogenic coefficient (AC), Castelli risk index 1 (CRI-1), Castelli risk index 2 (CRI-2) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) were calculated by utilizing standard lipid test values. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in sex, age, diabetes and hypertension status between the patient and the control groups. Serum triglyceride level, AIP, Hs-CRP, smoking and BMI were independently significantly associated with MAC in multiple regression analysis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Higher AIP was related to the existence of MAC and also predict the presence of MAC independently. Studies evaluating the modification of these indices are needed.

Abstract
PurposeWe aimed to analyze the correlation between overweight and obesity-related indicators and cardiovascular risk predictors in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and to evaluate their mutual predictive properties.MethodsA total of 103 patients with FH included from 2004 to 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to assess the correlation between overweight and obesity-related indicators and cardiovascular risk predictors in FH patients. Subject operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze their reciprocal predictive performance.Results(1) Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) (β = 0.020) and ApoB/ApoA1 Ratio (BAR) (β = 0.015) were independently correlated with body mass index (BMI) (P < 0.05); AIP (β = 1.176) was independently correlated with waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (P < 0.01); AIP (β = 1.575), BAR (β = 0.661) and atherogenic coefficient (AC) (β = 0.427) were independently correlated with waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (P < 0.05). (2) The area under the ROC (AUC) for overweight corresponding to AIP, BAR, and AC were 0.695 (95% CI = 0.593–0.797, P < 0.01), 0.660 (95% CI = 0.555–0.766, P < 0.01), and 0.632 (95% CI = 0.525–0.740, P < 0.05), respectively; and AUCs for central obesity corresponding to AIP, BAR and AC were 0.757 (95% CI = 0.656–0.857, P < 0.001), 0.654 (95% CI = 0.536–0.771, P < 0.05) and 0.651 (95% CI = 0.538–0.764, P < 0.05), respectively. The AUCs for moderate risk of AIP corresponding to BMI, WHR, and WHtR were 0.709 (95% CI = 0.608–0.811, P < 0.001), 0.773 (95% CI = 0.678–0.867, P < 0.001), 0.739 (95% CI = 0.641–0.836, P < 0.001), respectively, and BMI, WHR and WHtR corresponded to an AUC of 0.691 (95% CI = 0.585–0.797, P < 0.01), 0.734 (95% CI = 0.632–0.835, P < 0.001), and 0.706 (95% CI = 0.603–0.810, P < 0.01) for high risk of AIP, respectively.ConclusionAIP has independent positive linear correlation with indicators related to overweight and obesity in FH patients; AIP has good predictive performance for overweight and obesity in FH patients, and WHR has good performance for identifying moderate and high risk of AIP in FH patients.

Background
Due to the contribution of coronary artery disease (CAD) to serious cardiovascular events, determining biomarkers that could robustly predict its risk would be of utmost importance. Thus, this research was designed to assess the value of traditional cardio-metabolic indices, and more novel atherogenicity indices and insulin resistance surrogate markers in the identification of individuals at risk of CAD.
Methods
A case‒control survey was conducted, in which 3085 individuals were enrolled. Their clinical and biochemical data were gathered at baseline. The investigated indices included the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI), lipoprotein combine index (LCI), cholesterol index (CHOLINDEX), Castelli’s risk indices-I, II (CRI-I, CRI-II), and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS − IR). To examine the relationship between these variables and CAD risk, multiple regression analyses adjusted for potential confounders were conducted.
Results
Overall, 774 angiographically confirmed CAD patients (mean age = 54 years) were compared with 3085 controls (mean age = 51 years). Higher triglyceride, total cholesterol and fasting blood sugar levels and lower HDL-C levels were related to an elevated risk of CAD (P-for-trend < 0.001), while the direct association between increased serum LDL-C concentrations and a greater risk of CAD only became apparent when excluding those with diabetes, and statin users. Among novel indices, greater values of the majority of these markers, including AIP, CRI-I, and -II, CHOLINDEX, LCI, and TyG-index, in comparison to the lower values, significantly elevated CAD risk (P-for-trend < 0.001).
Conclusion
According to the current findings, novel atherogenicity indices and insulin resistance surrogate markers, in particular, AIP, CRI-I and II, CHOLINDEX, LCI, and TyG-index, may be useful in predicting CAD risk.

Abstract
Aims: The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is associated with cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, limited studies have investigated the association between AIP and the risk of heart failure (HF) in the general population. This study aimed to explore the association between AIP and HF risk using a large-scale population dataset from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017−March 2020 Pre-pandemic data. Methods: A total of 5598 individuals were included in the analysis of the association between AIP and HF from the NHANES database. The relationship between AIP and HF was examined using multivariate logistic regression and smooth curve fitting. An association between the two was detected based on the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: The overall prevalence of HF among the 5598 participants analyzed was 3.21%. Compared with individuals in the lowest quartile of AIP, participants in the higher quartiles showed a significantly reduced probability of HF. Smooth curve fitting analysis revealed a linear association between AIP and HF. Compared with individuals in Q1 of the AIP, participants in Q2 (OR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.2−0.72, p = 0.0033), Q3 (OR = 0.24, 95% CI = 0.12−0.48, p < 0.0001), and Q4 (OR = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.14−0.74, p = 0.0075) had a significantly decreased risk of HF after adjusting for other risk factors. Analysis of subgroup strata revealed that AIP may interact with age and statin use (p for interaction = 0.012 and 0.0022, respectively). Conclusion: Our results suggest that a high AIP value is negatively correlated with HF prevalence. The AIP may be an effective method for identifying individuals at a high risk of HF.

Abstract
Background Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) as a newly discovered blood lipid parameter was shown to be strongly correlated with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the blood lipid levels changed with age, so we speculated that the correlation between AIP and CAD was also affected by age.
Methods A retrospective study was performed on male patients with confirmed or suspected CAD who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) from July 2017 to March 2021. Patients were divided into younger, middle early, middle late, and elderly groups. Patients in each age group were further divided into the non-coronary artery disease (n-CAD) and CAD subgroups according to the CAG diagnostic results. The relationship between blood lipid parameters and CAD was assessed in each age group. Results Age-dependent changes of blood lipid levels were mainly found in CAD patients but not in n-CAD patients. With increased age, the levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and AIP were gradually decreased, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration was increased in CAD patients. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that AIP was an independent risk factor for CAD in middle early (OR 2.601; CI 1.160–5.832, P = 0.02) and middle late age group (OR 2.707, CI 1.201–6.100, P = 0.016), but not in the younger and elderly groups. LDL-C was an independent risk factor for CAD in all age groups. The areas under curve of AIP for detecting CAD in the middle early and middle late age groups were not higher than that of other blood lipid parameters. Conclusion Although this was a single-center study for males only, the correlation between AIP level and CAD risk was age-dependent. AIP was an independent risk factor for CAD in the middle-aged groups. However, the predictive value of AIP for detecting CAD was not better than that of the traditional blood lipid parameters such as LDL-C.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is not a single disease but a cluster of metabolic disorders associated with increased risk for development of diabetes mellitus and its complications. Currently, the definition of MS published in 2009 is widely used, but there are more versions of the diagnostic criteria, making it difficult to conduct scientific discourse in this area. Increased arterial stiffness (AS) can predict the development of cardiovascular disease both in the general population and in patients with MS. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), as a standard method to assess AS, may point out subclinical organ damage in patients with hypertension. The decrease in PWV level during antihypertensive therapy can identify a group of patients with better outcomes independently of their reduction in blood pressure. The adverse effect of metabolic disturbances on arterial function can be offset by an adequate program of exercises, which includes mainly aerobic physical training. Non-insulin-based insulin resistance index can predict AS due to a strong positive correlation with PWV. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the review of the literature concerning the relationship between MS and its components, and AS assessed by PWV, including clinical usefulness of PWV measurement in patients with MS and its components.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a predictor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), while hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for a variety of CVD. Apolipoprotein AI has been found to be a protective factor for CVD. However, the role of APO AI in the association between plasma uric acid and AIP among healthy Chinese people needs to be further explored. AIMS To evaluate the relationship between blood uric acid and AIP level in healthy Chinese people. To evaluate the relationship between blood uric acid and Apolipoprotein AI in healthy Chinese people. METHOD A total of 3501 normal and healthy subjects who had physical examinations were divided into the hyperuricemia (HUA) group and the normouricemia (NUA) group. RESULT The AIP of HUA group was significantly higher than that of NUA group [0.17±0.30 vs. -0.08±0.29]. Apo AI (1.33 ± 0.21 vs. 1.47 ± 0.26 g/l) and HDL-c (1.12 ± 0.27 vs. 1.36 ± 0.33 mmol/l) were significantly lower in the HUA group than in the NUA group. LDL-C (2.81 ± 0.77 vs. 2.69 ± 0.73 mmol/l), Apo B (0.96 ± 0.20 vs. 0.89 ± 0.20 g/l), FBG (5.48 ± 0.48 vs. 5.36 ± 0.48 mmol/l) and HOMA-IR [2.75 (1.92-3.91) vs. 2.18 (1.50-3.12)] was significantly higher in HAU group than the NUA group. Increases in plasma UA were associated with increases in AIP (β = 0.307, p < 0.01) and decreases in Apo AI (β = - 0.236, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for high AIP level. Inhibition of Apolipoprotein AI may be one of the mechanisms of UA which is involved in the progression of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Background: The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is an indicator of atherogenic dyslipidemia and is significantly associated with the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Previous studies showing the association of AIP with C-reactive protein (CRP) and microalbuminuria included hypertensive and diabetic patients. We aimed to determine the association of AIP with CRP and albuminuria in a normotensive and nondiabetic population. Methods: The study was conducted retrospectively. Two hundred thirty-three individuals without hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, malignancy, systemic inflammatory disease, nephrological disease, and active infection were determined and included in the study. Urinary albumin excretion was calculated from the albumin-creatinine ratio in fresh spot urine [urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR)]. AIP risk groups were compared in terms of clinical and laboratory findings, and the correlation between AIP and CRP and UACR was evaluated. Results: A total of 233 people, with a mean age of 45.4 years and 139 (69.7%) of whom were male, were included in the study. One hundred thirty-eight (59.2%) individuals were found to be in the low-risk group, 29 (12.5%) in the medium-risk group, and 66 (28.3%) in the high-risk group, according to the AIP value. CRP and UACR were not different between the AIP risk groups (P: 0.141 and 0.441, respectively). A mild correlation was found between AIP and CRP (r: 0.192; P: 0.003), but no correlation was found between AIP and UACR (r: 0.086; P: 0.193). The stepwise linear regression analysis with model adjusted for possible confounders and AIP revealed that only body mass index was a significant predictor of CRP (β: 0.308; P < 0.001), while only systolic blood pressure was a significant predictor of UACR (β: 0.19; P: 0.004), but AIP was not. Conclusions: AIP was not associated with CRP and UACR in normotensive and nondiabetic individuals. This finding suggests that the relationship found in previous studies is related to the presence of hypertension or diabetes rather than the AIP.

Abstract
AIMS The study aimed to assess the antidiabetic effect of Oakmoss. BACKGROUND Lichens species are dual organisms consisting of a mycobiont (Fungi) and a photoautotrophic partner (Algae). They are widely used in traditional medicine as a treatment against diabetes. OBJECTIVE This study was designed to assess the antihyperglycemic activity as well as the antihyperlipidemic capacity of Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri (L.)) in normal and streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. METHODS This study has evaluated the effects of aqueous extract of Oakmoss at a dose of 60 mg/kg on blood glucose levels and lipid profile in normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats. Histopathological examination of liver, determination of glycogen content in liver and skeletal muscles (EDL and soleus), antioxidant activity, and phytochemical investigation were also performed. RESULTS Both single and repeated oral doses of Oakmoss (60 mg/kg) produced a significant reduction of blood glucose, triglycerides and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels in diabetic rats. Furthermore, repeated oral administration of Oakmoss during 7 days ameliorated the liver function by increasing its glycogen content and improving its histological architecture in treated diabetic rats. In addition, the aqueous extract of Oakmoss exhibited an antioxidant activity and showed richness in certain phytochemicals especially in phenolic acids and flavonoids. CONCLUSION Oakmoss, a lichen species, exhibits a potential effect on improving hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia in diabetic rats.

Abstract
Coronary artery disease (CAD) has been linked to one of the highest death rates globally. The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) may be an important predictor of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, superior to the standard atherosclerotic lipid profile. This study investigated the relationship between AIP and obesity indices, blood glucose, lipid profile, and nutrient intake status in Korean adult men. The study included 1292 males aged ≥19 years old who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013–2014. Participants were divided into four groups according to AIP quartiles, calculated as log (triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)). Body mass index, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, TG, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased as AIP levels increased, whereas HDL-C level declined. As the level of AIP increased, intake of saturated fatty acid, calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, milk, and dairy product decreased significantly, and the contribution rate of milk and dairy products to fat intake decreased. AIP was linked to obesity indices, blood glucose, and blood lipid profile in Korean men, suggesting that it could predict CAD.

Abstract
The present study aimed to explore the correlation of atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) with angiographic progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). AIP was defined as the base 10 logarithm of the ratio of the triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. The extent of coronary lesion was assessed by the Gensini Score (GS) system and angiographic progression was defined as the GS rate of change per year >1 point. A total of 896 patients with suspected CAD who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography twice at intervals of >6 months were included. Baseline AIP was positively correlated with remnant cholesterol (r = .644, P < .001). When patients were assigned into four groups according to baseline AIP quartiles, the incidence of CAD progression significantly increased across the quartiles of AIP (Q1 [lowest]: 23.7 vs Q2: 29.9 vs Q3: 33.9 vs Q4 [highest]: 34.8%; P = .042). After multivariate adjustment, the odds ratio for CAD progression was 1.89 when comparing the highest to the lowest quartile of AIP (95% confidence interval: 1.18-3.02; P = .008). Therefore, AIP was independently correlated with angiographic progression of CAD beyond conventional risk factors, suggesting that AIP may play a role in early risk stratification as a simple surrogate of residual risk.

Abstract
Background: The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), which is the logarithm of the ratio between the triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) concentrations in molar units, is correlated with the burden of atherosclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the AIP and coronary artery disease (CAD) in the adult population by performing a meta-analysis. Methods: Observational studies relevant for this meta-analysis were identified by searching the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Only studies using multivariate analysis were considered. A random-effects model, which incorporates potential intra-study heterogeneity, was applied to combine the results. Results: Ten observational studies were included. In studies with the AIP analyzed as a continuous variable, a higher AIP was associated with a higher odds of CAD (adjusted risk ratio [RR] per 1-standard deviation [SD] increment of AIP: 2.10, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.51-2.93, P < 0.001, I2 = 90%). Further analysis of studies with the AIP analyzed as a categorical variable showed a higher odds of CAD (adjusted RR: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.88-2.93, P < 0.001, I2 = 37%) in the participants with the highest versus the lowest AIP value. Subgroup analyses demonstrated consistent results in asymptomatic and symptomatic populations as well as in male and female participants (all between-group P values > 0.05). Discussion: Current evidence, mostly from cross-sectional studies, suggests that a higher AIP value may be independently associated with CAD in the adult population.

Abstract
Background: Plaque instability is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. Numerous efforts have been made to figure out and manage unstable plaques prior to major cardiovascular events incidence. The current study aims to assess the values of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) to detect unstable plaques. Materials and Methods: The current case-control study was conducted on 435 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention due to chronic stable angina (stable plaques, n = 145) or acute coronary syndrome (unstable plaques, n = 290). The demographic, comorbidities, chronic medications, biochemical and hematological characteristics of the patients were entered into the study checklist. The baseline AIP was measured according to the formula of triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein logarithm. Binary logistic regression was applied to investigate the standalone association of AIP with plaque instability. Receiver operating curve (ROC) was depicted to determine a cut-off, specificity, and sensitivity of AIP in unstable plaques diagnosis. Results: AIP was an independent predictor for atherogenic plaque unstability in both crude (odds ratio [OR]: 3.677, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.521–8.890; P = 0.004) and full-adjusted models (OR: 15, 95% CI: 2.77–81.157; P = 0.002). According to ROC curve, at cut-point level of 0.62, AIP had sensitivity and specificity of 89.70% and 34% to detect unstable plaques, respectively (area under the curve: 0.648, 95% CI: 0.601–0.692, P < 0.001). Conclusion: According to this study, at the threshold of 0.62, AIP as an independent biomarker associated with plaque instability can be considered a screening tool for patients at increased risk for adverse events due to unstable atherosclerotic plaques.

Abstract
Background Although the pathophysiology of coronary slow flow (CSF) has not been fully elucidated, emerging data increasingly support potential role for subclinical diffuse atherosclerosis in the etiology of CSF. We aimed to investigate relationship between atherogenic indices and CSF. Methods 130 patients with CSF diagnosed according to Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI)-frame count (TFC) method and 130 controls who had normal coronary flow (NCF) were included in this retrospective study. Atherogenic indices (atherogenic index of plasma [AIP], Castelli risk indices I and II [CRI-I and II]) were calculated using conventional lipid parameters. Results The logistic regression analyses demonstrated that AIP (OR, 5.463; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.357–21.991; p = 0.017) and CRI-II (OR, 1.624; 95% CI, 1.138–2.319; p = 0.008) were independent predictors of CSF. Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that the optimal cutoff value to predict the occurrence of CSF was 0.66 for AIP (sensitivity, 59%; specificity, 73%; area under curve [AUC], 0.695; p < 0.001) and 3.27 for CRI-II (sensitivity, 60%; specificity, 79%; AUC, 0.726; p < 0.001). Conclusions AIP and CRI-II levels were independent predictors of CSF. Prospective studies in larger cohorts of patients may elucidate the role of atherogenic dyslipidemia in the pathophysiology of CSF.

Abstract
Background Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Omega-3 supplementation has been proposed as a possible strategy for management of cardiometabolic risk. Cardiometabolic indices can predict and evaluate the cardiometabolic risk. Aims We investigated the effect of omega-3 supplementation on accurate and available cardiometabolic indices including atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), Castelli risk index I, Castelli risk index II and atherogenic coefficient (AC) in diabetic patients with NAFLD. Methods We conducted a double-blind, randomized controlled trial (RCT) for 12 weeks. From August 2016 to March 2017, the subjects referred to Faghihi hospital in Shiraz, Iran, were recruited. Sixty diabetic patients with NAFLD were randomly assigned into the omega-3 (2000 mg/d omega-3 capsule contained 360 mg/d eicosapentaenoic acid and 240 mg/d docosahexaenoic acid) and the placebo (liquid paraffin) groups using computer-generated random number table. Results Omega-3 supplementation compared to the placebo had no significant effect on AIP (− 0.11 ± 0.20 vs. -0.03 ± 0.16; P = 0.11), Castelli risk index I (− 0.25 ± 0.6 vs. -0.07 ± 0.7; P = 0.42), Castelli risk index II (− 0.24 ± 0.5 vs. -0.14 ± 0.5; P = 0.63) and AC (− 0.25 ± 0.6 vs. -0.07 ± 0.7; P = 0.42). After adjusting for confounding factors, the findings remained without change. Conclusion Omega-3 supplementation (2000 mg/d) for 12 weeks has no effect on cardiometabolic risk. It seems, higher doses of omega-3 can improve cordiometabolic risk. The trial was registered at Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials IRCT2016102530489N1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite recent advances in recognizing more reliable indicators to estimate the coronary artery disease (CAD) patients' response to treatment and prognosis, less attention has been paid to evaluating them in clinical trials. Hence, the present research was conducted to study the impact of rice bran oil (RBO) versus sunflower oil (SFO) on various atherogenicity and insulin resistance markers. METHODS In the present 8-week randomized controlled trial, 40 CAD men with an average age of 56 years were allocated randomly into the intervention or control group to use RBO or SFO (30 g/day) plus a standardized dietary plan. As a further analysis, eight atherosclerosis-related indices were calculated before and after the study. RESULTS Analysis of covariance test in which potential confounders and baseline levels were considered, indicated that using RBO compared to SFO reduced Castelli's risk index I and II (adjusted means:3.29, 1.52 vs. 4.61, 2.20, respectively), atherogenic coefficient (2.29 vs. 3.61), lipoprotein combine index (6.54 vs. 17.53), and cholesterol index (0.46 vs. 1.20) after the trial (P-value ≤ 0.002). Also, the RBO group yielded significantly lower triglyceride glucose index (8.73 vs. 9.13) (P-value = 0.010). Further, marginally significant amelioration in triglyceride/HDL ratio and atherogenic index of plasma (1.48 and 0.13 vs. 1.86 and 0.24 respectively) were noted (P-value = 0.07). Spearman correlation analysis detected significant positive correlations between alterations in TNF-α serum levels (ng/L) and the majority of evaluated indices (P-value < 0.05). CONCLUSION Taken together, incorporating 30 g of RBO into the patient's usual diet appeared effective in ameliorating atherogenicity and insulin resistance indicators among men with CAD, probably in relation to its anti-inflammatory properties. Abstract
The association between early atherosclerosis (IMT) and Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a marker of atherogenicity (log triglycerides/HDL Cholesterol) was evaluated in a population-based cohort study in women, aged 30-69, living in the metropolitan area of Naples, Southern Italy (Progetto ATENA). Serum cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Triglyceride, Insulin, HOMA, Apo B, hs-CPR were measured in 390 menopausal women, as a part of 5.062 participants of the cohort. Women in the second and third tertile of AIP showed an increased common carotid intima-media thickness compared with those in the first tertile: II vs I tertile (O.R. = 2.24, p = 0.007), III vs I tertile (O.R. = 2.29, p = 0.005), adjusted for age and Systolic pressure or II vs I tertile (O.R. = 2.19, p = 0.014), III vs I tertile (O.R. = 2.13, p = 0.026), adjusted for age, Systolic pressure, Body mass index and Apo B. Women in the second and third tertile of AIP compared to those in the first tertile, showed an OR of 2.14 (p = 0.016) and 1.99 (p = 0.033) respectively, of having elevates level of IMT, adjusted for traditional cardiovascular risk factor (age, Systolic Pressure, BMI, LDL Cholesterol, Diabetes diagnosis). This finding shows that in this group of menopausal women increased IMT is associated with elevated AIP independently of age and different cardiovascular risk factors. These results are in line with the hypothesis that AIP may be an useful clinical tools to give additional information in the risk assessment for atherosclerotic disease, in particular in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
The plasma atherogenic index (AIP) has been suggested as a useful independent predictor of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in high CV risk patients. We investigated the association between AIP and arterial stiffness measured by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) in healthy adults. A total of 3468 healthy subjects without any metabolic or CV diseases were enrolled. Anthropometric and CV risk factors were measured. The AIP was defined as the base 10 logarithm of the ratio of the concentration of triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Subjects were classified into AIP quartiles. There were gradual deteriorations in metabolic parameters and increase in baPWV across the increasing AIP quartiles. In a fully adjusted analysis, compared with Q1 (lowest quartile) group, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for increased baPWV was higher in Q2 1.51, Q3 1.64, and Q4 (highest quartile) 2.77 among men, and Q2 1.09, Q3 1.55, and Q4 1.83 among women (all P trend <0 .05). There was a strong association between AIP and baPWV, and a higher AIP was an independent predictor of increased arterial stiffness in healthy Korean men and women. The AIP may be a simple screening tool for subclinical atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is a chronic non-transmissible condition that has increased due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Statins have been used as the standard treatment to control hyperlipidemia. However, side effects and high costs may be associated with its prolonged treatment, so plants derivatives have been an attractive therapy to overcome these problems. Among the compounds extracted from plants, the p-hydroxycinnamic diesters (HCE), present in carnauba wax (CW), have been found with good pharmacological properties. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the potential anti-hypercholesterolemic and possible toxicological effects of HCE in C57BL/6J mice under a high-fat (HF) diet. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed during 60 days under the HF diet and therefore were either treated with HCE (200 and 400 mg/kg) or simvastatin (20 mg/kg) or received saline (controls) by gavage for 30 days under the same diet. HCE treatment was able to reduce serum total cholesterol and LDL levels. Besides, this compound increased liver X receptor (LXR) and but not significantly affected IL-1β and TNF-α liver mRNA transcription activity. In conclusion, HCE treatment was found safe and may attenuate the deleterious effects of dyslipidemia due to chronic feeding with western diets.

Abstract
Background: Intracranial arterial stenosis (ICAS) is a common cause of stroke. Identifying effective predictors of ICAS that could be easily obtained in clinical practice is important. The predictive values of serum individual lipid parameters have been well-established. In recent years, several non-traditional lipid parameters demonstrated greater predictive values for cardiovascular disease and ischemic stroke than traditional individual lipid parameters. However, their effects on asymptomatic ICAS (aICAS) are less clear. Therefore, we sought to observe the effects of non-traditional lipid parameters on aICAS. Methods: We enrolled 5,314 participants from the Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities in Community study. Asymptomatic ICAS was detected by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD). Non-traditional lipid parameters, including non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), the triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C), atherogenic coefficient (AC), atherogenic index of plasma, and Castelli's risk index (CRI) were measured. We used multivariable logistic analysis to assess the association of different lipid parameters with aICAS; a trend test and subgroup analyses were also performed. Results: In total, 695 of 5,314 participants had aICAS in this study. For the comparison of the highest to the lowest tertile, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) (95% CIs) were 1.78 (1.39-2.27) (p trend < 0.001) for non-HDL-C, 1.48 (1.18-1.85) (p trend = 0.004) for the AC, 1.48 (1.18-1.85) (p trend = 0.004) for CRI-I, and 1.34 (1.09-1.66) (p trend = 0.032) for CRI-II. Subgroup analyses showed significant interactions between the AC, CRI-I, and diabetes. Conclusions: This large community-based study showed that non-HDL-C, AC, CRI-I, and CRI-II were significantly associated with increased prevalence of aICAS.

Abstract
Aim: Recently, the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) has been proposed as a novel, reliable plasma atherogenicity marker. This study aimed to investigate the association of AIP with the risk of in-stent restenosis (ISR) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled patients with ACS followed by angiography within 6 to 18 months after successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with a drug-eluting stent (DES). And the participants were divided into ISR or non-ISR groups based on the angiographic follow-up results. AIP was defined as the base 10 logarithm of the ratio of serum triglyceride (mmol/L) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (mmol/L).
Results: This study recruited 1319 patients with ACS, 199 of which had ISR. Compared with the non-ISR group, patients in the ISR group had higher level of AIP (0.199±0.290 vs 0.131±0.282,p=0.002). In the multiple logistic regression analysis, AIP was an independent risk factor for DES-ISR (OR=2.100, 95% CI 1.134 to 3.891,p=0.018). When we modulated AIP as a categorical variable, the risk of DES-ISR increased in quartile 4 compared to quartile 1 (OR=1.713, 95% CI 1.040 to 2.822,p=0.034). Furthermore, this association remains stable in various subgroups. Unexpectedly, the subgroup analysis suggested AIP and DES-ISR had a stronger positive association in individuals with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) <1.8 mmol/L.
Conclusions: AIP and the risk of DES-ISR were positively and independently correlated in patients with ACS, especially in those with an LDL-C <1.8 mmol/L.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cardiovascular events (CVE) are the most prominent cause of death worldwide. Therefore, achieving a precise affordable index for the prediction of healthy cases at increased risk of CVE in early stages and subsequently lessening the rate of CVE mortality is a critical goal of healthcare systems. We aimed to assess the value of Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) in the prediction of CVE and mortality through a 15-year cohort study. MATERIALS/METHODS This study was conducted on 6323 over 35-year-old healthy adults from 2001 to 2016. The baseline AIP was measured based on the formula of TG to HDL logarithm and divided into three subgroups of low, intermediate, and high risk of CVD, as <0.11, 0.11-0.21, and ≥0.21, respectively. Eventually, the association of AIP with sociodemographic, lifestyle, traditional CVE-related factors and CVE-induced mortality was evaluated. RESULTS The multiple cox regression study of AIP values for the prediction of CVE incidence revealed a significant association (OR: 1.57, 95%CI: 1.33-1.85); similar remarkable associations were achieved by controlling age and sex (OR: 1.55, 95%CI: 1.31-1.83), sociodemographic factors (OR: 1.51, 95%CI: 1.29-1.79), sociodemographic plus lifestyle factors (OR: 1.54, 95%CI: 1.30-1.81) and sociodemographic, lifestyle and the traditional CVE-related factors (OR: 1.28, 95%CI: 1.07-1.54). The Kaplan-Meier survival study showed a significant association between AIP levels and CVE-related mortality (p <0.001). CONCLUSION In conclusion, AIP is an independent stand-alone factor for the prediction of developing CVE and its-related mortality.
