Abstract
Cancer and depression are closely interrelated, particularly in patients with advanced cancer, who often present with comorbid anxiety and depression for various reasons. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of depression in cancer patients, with the aim of assessing the possible triggers, predictors, adverse events, and possible treatment options for depression in several common cancers. The objective of this narrative review is to synthesize the extant literature on the relationship between the occurrence and progression of depression in several common patient categories. The authors conducted a comprehensive review of 75 articles published in PubMed over the past five years. This review was further evaluated in the present paper. Ultimately, it was determined that depression is a prevalent and detrimental phenomenon among cancer patients, particularly those with advanced disease. Consequently, there is a pressing need to prioritize research and interventions aimed at improving the quality of life and psychosocial well-being of cancer patients, including those with advanced disease. The relationship between cancer and depression has been evolving dynamically in recent times. The current research findings indicate a strong association between cancer and depression. However, the direction of causality remains unclear. Focusing on depression in cancer patients may, therefore, be beneficial for these patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Depression and anxiety's impact on glioma patient survival lacks consensus. Understanding these effects can highlight the importance of identifying depression and anxiety in glioma patients, and inform future treatments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to clarify the impact of depression and anxiety on glioma patient survival. METHODS We conducted a systematic literature search of major databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO, from inception to June 2023, to identify relevant studies. Eligible studies were those that examined the association between depression, anxiety, or both, and survival outcomes in glioma patients. Data were extracted and analyzed using fixed-effects meta-analysis models to calculate pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS A total of 15 studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing a diverse range of glioma patients across different clinical settings and stages. The meta-analysis revealed a statistically significant association between depression and reduced overall survival in glioma patients, with a pooled HR of 1.65 (95% CI: 1.41-1.83, 11 studies). The preliminary univariate meta-regression results indicate no impact of individual study characteristics on the effect size. Likewise, anxiety was associated with worse overall survival, with a pooled HR of 1.65 (95% CI: 1.18-2.31, 5 studies). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis underscores the vital need to identify and treat depression and anxiety in glioma patients. Future research should explore the underlying mechanisms, aiding the creation of interventions enhancing both mental health and clinical outcomes for this vulnerable group.

Abstract
This case highlights the need for thorough medical and neurological screening before making any psychiatric diagnosis, even if the patient has a classical syndromic presentation. Presented here is a case of a female in her late 40s coming to our psychiatric outpatient with symptoms suggestive of catatonia. She was treated at a private clinic for depression. As her symptoms deteriorated, she was brought to our hospital for further management. She was diagnosed with catatonia during admission assessment. A detailed neurological assessment later revealed slight weakness in the right upper and lower limb. Following this, a CT scan was done and was reported to have a hypodense area involving the bilateral frontal and basifrontal region, more pronounced on the left side (likely to be acute/subacute). MRI was subsequently done and was found to be suggestive of glioblastoma NOS (not otherwise specified) involving the bilateral cerebral hemisphere which was later confirmed by the histopathology report.

Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with intracranial gliomas frequently seek for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), in addition to guideline-directed therapy. In this study, we therefore assessed patients' information needs regarding treatment and support, and evaluated their attitudes toward experimental trials and alternative therapies. METHODS A prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive survey was conducted in our center. We developed an interview focusing on how patients obtain further information about therapy and the use of alternative/complementary therapies. RESULTS A total of 102 patients participated in the survey. 50% (n = 51) of patients reported that they had not attempted any additional therapies. When patients attempted self-therapy, it was most commonly in the areas of nutrition (25%, n = 26) and dietary supplements (17%, n = 17). Alternative or complementary therapies were used by 14% (n = 14) of the patients. Younger age (Odds ratio (OR) 0.96 (95% Confidence interval (CI) 0.92-0.99, p = 0.012) and tumor entity (OR 5.01 (95% CI 1.66-15.11, p = 0.004) for grade 4 vs. 3 tumors and OR 7.22 (95% CI 1.99-26.28) for grade 4 vs. other tumors p = 0.003) were significantly associated with a greater interest in CAM. CONCLUSIONS Interest in complementary and alternative medicine, as well as nutrition and dietary supplements is high (51%) among glioma patients, and significantly higher among younger patients and those with a worse diagnosis (WHO grade 4). A comprehensive approach to information, including paramedical topics, is needed to provide optimal patient counseling and care for glioma patients.

Abstract
Patients with brain tumors suffer from intense psychosocial distress. Although the prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with brain tumors is high, the pharmacological antidepressant treatment of those patients is not well defined and results from clinical trials are largely missing. In this review, we describe the current standard of evidence and clinical guidelines for the pharmacological treatment of depression in brain tumor patients. We present specific side effects and interactions that should guide treatment decisions. Furthermore, we provide evidence for the diagnosis, screening and risk factors for depression in brain tumor patients and we elaborate on potential antineoplastic effects of antidepressant drugs and ongoing clinical trials. Antidepressant drugs should not be withheld from patients with brain tumors. Future clinical trials should explore the effectiveness and side effects of antidepressants in this specific patient population.

Abstract
Social determinants of health (SDOH) impact cancer-related health outcomes, including survival, but their impact on symptoms is less understood among the primary brain tumor (PBT) population. We conducted a systematic review to examine the relationships between SDOH and neurocognitive and mood-related symptoms among the PBT population. PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL were searched using PROGRESS criteria (place of residence, race/ethnicity, occupation, gender/sex, religion, education, socioeconomic status, and social capital) on March 8th, 2022. Two individuals screened and assessed study quality using the NHLBI Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-sectional Studies. Of 3006 abstracts identified, 150 full-text articles were assessed, and 48 were included for a total sample of 28 454 study participants. Twenty-two studies examined 1 SDOH; none examined all 8. Four studies measured place of residence, 2 race/ethnicity, 13 occupation, 42 gender, 1 religion, 18 education, 4 socioeconomic status, and 15 social capital. Fifteen studies assessed neurocognitive and 37 mood-related symptoms. While higher education was associated with less neurocognitive symptoms, and among individuals with meningioma sustained unemployment after surgery was associated with depressive symptoms, results were otherwise disparate among SDOH and symptoms. Most studies were descriptive or exploratory, lacking comprehensive inclusion of SDOH. Standardizing SDOH collection, reducing bias, and recruiting diverse samples are recommended in future interventions.

Abstract
Gliomas represent the most commonly occurring tumors in the central nervous system and account for approximately 80% of all malignant primary brain tumors. With a high malignancy and recurrence risk, the prognosis of high-grade gliomas is poor, with a mean survival time of 12-18 months. While contrast-enhanced MRI serves as the standard diagnostic imaging modality for gliomas, it faces limitations in the evaluation of recurrent gliomas, failing to distinguish between treatment-related changes and tumor progression, and offers no direct therapeutic options. Recent advances in imaging modalities have attempted to address some of these limitations, including positron emission tomography (PET), which has demonstrated success in delineating tumor margins and guiding the treatment of recurrent gliomas. Additionally, with the advent of theranostics in nuclear medicine, PET tracers, when combined with therapeutic agents, have also evolved beyond a purely diagnostic modality, serving both diagnostic and therapeutic roles. This review will discuss the growing involvement of theranostics in diagnosing and treating recurrent gliomas and address the associated impact on quality of life and functional recovery.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Gliomas tend to have a poor prognosis and are the most common primary malignant tumors of the central nervous system. Compared with patients with other cancers, glioma patients often suffer from increased levels of psychological stress, such as anxiety and fear. Chronic stress (CS) is thought to impact glioma profoundly. However, because of the complex mechanisms underlying CS and variability in individual tolerance, the role of CS in glioma remains unclear. This review suggests a new proposal to redivide the stress system into two parts. Neuronal activity is dominant upstream. Stress-signaling molecules produced by the neuroendocrine system are dominant downstream. We discuss the underlying molecular mechanisms by which CS impacts glioma. Potential pharmacological treatments are also summarized from the therapeutic perspective of CS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain tumors represent a disease that causes both physical and psychological distress for those affected. The pharmacological treatment of depressive symptoms in particular has not been sufficiently researched in these patients. Depression can severely affect the quality of life and has an impact on the course of the disease. OBJECTIVE The aim of this work is to describe the diagnosis and treatment of depressive symptoms in brain tumor patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS For this work a comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies addressing the topic of depressive symptoms in brain tumors. The included studies were critically appraised to ensure their quality and relevance. RESULTS The review of the literature revealed that depressive symptoms are a common complication in brain tumor patients. It was found that there are no studies to date on the efficacy of antidepressant medications in brain tumor patients. DISCUSSION The results of this work highlight the need to pay increased attention to mental health in brain tumor patients. It is important that healthcare professionals identify depression in these patients at an early stage and provide appropriate interventions to improve their quality of life. Future research should focus on further exploring the mechanisms behind the association between brain tumors and depression in order to develop targeted and effective intervention options.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with primary brain tumors (pPBTs) often exhibit heightened distress. This study assesses how symptoms of anxiety and depression change over time in pPBTs and identifies factors that may predict patients' symptom trajectories. METHODS Ninety-nine adult pPBTs completed psychosocial assessments at neuro-oncology appointments over 6-18 months. Quality of life was assessed with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Brain; symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed with the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System short forms. The prevalence of patients with clinically elevated symptoms and those who experienced clinically meaningful changes in symptoms throughout follow-up were examined. Linear mixed-effects models evaluated changes in symptoms over time at the group level, and latent class growth analysis (LCGA) evaluated changes in symptoms over time at the individual level. RESULTS At enrollment, 51.5% and 32.3% of patients exhibited clinically elevated levels of anxiety and depression, respectively. Of patients with follow-up data (n = 74), 54.1% and 50% experienced clinically meaningful increases in anxiety and depression scores, respectively. There were no significant changes in anxiety or depression scores over time, but better physical, functional, and brain-cancer well-being predicted lower levels of anxiety and depression (p < 0.001). Five sub-groups of patients with distinct symptom trajectories emerged via LCGA. CONCLUSIONS pPBTs commonly experience elevated symptoms of anxiety and depression that may fluctuate in clinically meaningful manners throughout the disease. Routine screening for elevated symptoms is needed to capture clinically meaningful changes and identify factors affecting symptoms to intervene on.

Abstract
A cancer diagnosis is life altering and frequently associated with both acute and long-lasting psychosocial and behavioral distress for patients. The impact of a diffuse glioma diagnosis on mental health is an important aspect of the patient experience with their disease. This needs to be understood by neurosurgeons so these concerns can be appropriately addressed in a timely fashion and integrated into the multidisciplinary care of neuro-oncology patients. The relatively grave prognosis associated with diffuse gliomas, the morbidity associated with treatment, and the constant threat of developing a new neurological deficit all can negatively affect a patient's mental ability to cope and ultimately manifest in mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. The objective of this systematic review was to describe the variety of behavioral health disorders patients may experience following a glioma diagnosis and discuss possible treatment options. The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were searched through July 1, 2022, using broad search terms, which resulted in 5028 studies that were uploaded to Covidence systematic review software. Duplicates, non-English-language studies, and studies with irrelevant outcomes or incorrect design were removed (n = 3167). A total of 92 articles reporting behavioral health outcomes in brain tumor patients were categorized and extracted for associations with overall mental health, anxiety, depression, distress, stress, pharmacology, interventions, and mental health in caregivers. The authors identified numerous studies reporting the prevalence of mental health disorders and their negative influence in this population. However, there is a paucity of literature on therapeutic options for patients. Given the strong correlation between patient quality of life and mental well-being, there is a considerable need for early recognition and treatment of these behavioral health disorders to optimize everyday functioning for patients.

Abstract
Anxiety and depression are frequently noticed in glioma patients, while few studies report this issue in recurrent glioma patients. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety and depression, as well as their risk factors and prognostic value in recurrent glioma patients. Eighty recurrent glioma patients, 40 newly-diagnosed glioma patients, and 40 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Then, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for anxiety (HADS-A) and for depression (HADS-D) were used to assess the anxiety and depression status of all subjects. The HADS-A score (8.6 ± 3.3 vs. 7.0 ± 2.9 vs. 4.3 ± 2.5), anxiety rate (58.8% vs. 32.5% vs. 10.0%), HADS-D score (7.9 ± 3.0 vs. 6.9 ± 3.1 vs. 4.0 ± 2.6), and depression rate (45.0% vs. 30.0% vs. 7.5%) were all highest in recurrent glioma patients, followed by newly-diagnosed glioma patients, and were lowest in healthy controls (all P < 0.001). Furthermore, female sex (vs. male sex) was independently correlated with anxiety (odds ratio (OR): 3.042, P = 0.029); meanwhile, higher World Health Organization (WHO) pathological grade was independently correlated with depression (OR: 2.573, P = 0.019) in recurrent glioma patients. Additionally, anxiety was correlated with shortened progression-free survival (PFS) (P = 0.028) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0.047), while depression only had a correlation trend with shortened PFS (without statistical significance) (P = 0.069) and was associated with shortened OS (P = 0.035) in recurrent glioma patients. The prevalence of anxiety and depression is high in recurrent glioma patients, which relates to gender, WHO pathological grade, and estimates worsen survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-grade gliomas (HGG) account for 60-75% of all adult gliomas. The complexity of treatment, recovery and survivorship creates a need for novel monitoring approaches. Accurate assessment of physical function plays a vital role in clinical evaluation. Digital wearable tools could help us address unmet needs by offering unique advantages such as scale, cost and continuous real-world objective data. We present data from 42 patients enrolled into the BrainWear study. METHODS An AX3 accelerometer was worn by patients from diagnosis or at recurrence. Age-, sex-matched UK Biobank control groups were chosen for comparison. RESULTS 80% of data were categorised as high-quality demonstrating acceptability. Remote, passive monitoring identifies moderate activity reduces both during a course of radiotherapy (69 to 16 minutes/day) and at the time of progressive disease assessed by MRI (72 to 52 minutes/day). Mean acceleration (mg) and time spent walking daily (h/day) correlated positively with the global health quality of life and physical functioning scores and inversely with the fatigue score. Healthy controls walked on average 2.91h/day compared to 1.32h/day for the HGG group on weekdays and 0.91h/day on the weekend. The HGG cohort slept for longer on weekends (11.6h/day) than weekdays (11.2h/day) compared to healthy controls (8.9h/day). CONCLUSION Wrist-worn accelerometers are acceptable and longitudinal studies feasible. HGG patients receiving a course of radiotherapy reduce their moderate activity by 4-fold and are at least half as active as healthy controls at baseline. Remote monitoring can provide a more informed and objective understanding of patient activity levels to help optimise health related quality of life (HRQoL) among a patient cohort with an extremely limited lifespan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depres sion is reported in up to 90% of cancer patients but to this date, a standardized screening tool for depression specifically modified for patients diagnosed with brain tumors is lacking. Thus, this study aims to develop an adapted screening tool and identify a suitable time slot for screening. METHODS Sixty-one patients with brain lesions were interviewed prior to neurosurgical resection. For screening purposes, established depression scores were used. A study-specific questionnaire (SSQ) was developed based on patient interviews prior to the trial. Two subgroups were analyzed: patients with benign and patients with malignant tumors (including brain metastases). As a subgroup within malignant lesions, patients with glioblastoma (GBM) were also analyzed separately. RESULTS Of patients, 87.5% with GBM presented with results > 16 points on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) after surgery. A decline in patients with benign brain tumors (p = 0.0058) and an increase in patients with malignant tumors (p = 0.0491) could be shown over time for CES-D scores. In this study, we established a new prototype screening tool for depression. In patients diagnosed with GBM, the number of patients needed to screen for identification of symptoms of depression was 1.59. Best time for screening was 35 days after surgery. CONCLUSIONS Considering the high prevalence and low number needed to screen of depression in patients diagnosed with GBM, we strongly encourage their routine screening during follow-up appointments (35 days after surgery). We encourage a plan to further establish the questionnaire developed in this pilot study.

Abstract
Depressive symptoms are common among patients with glioblastoma, but patients are often not treated with antidepressants. There is only limited evidence on the association of antidepressant drug use with survival in glioblastoma. We performed a pooled analysis of patients treated within the CENTRIC, CORE, AVAglio and ACT-IV trials to explore the relation of antidepressant drug use with progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) at baseline, at the start of maintenance therapy and at the start of maintenance cycle 4. We further assessed the association of antidepressant drugs with seizure, cognition, fatigue and a diagnosis of depression. Among more than 1700 patients, we found no significant association between the use of antidepressants at baseline or at the start of maintenance therapy and PFS or OS. However, we found OS, but not PFS, to be significantly worse in patients using antidepressants at the start of maintenance cycle 4. After adjustment for antiepileptic drug use and despite showing a trend for increased risk, seizures were not significantly associated with antidepressant drug use, nor was there a change in mini mental state examination (MMSE) scores or fatigue by antidepressant drug use at baseline. However, there was a significant positive association between antidepressant use at the start of maintenance treatment and fatigue during maintenance treatment. The association of antidepressant use at the start of maintenance cycle 4 with inferior OS of glioblastoma patients requires independent confirmation and further study. Further prospective trials should evaluate efficacy, side effects and associations with outcome of antidepressants in glioblastoma.

Abstract
Background In addition to poor survival rates, individuals with glioblastoma (GBM) are at risk of neurocognitive impairment due to multiple factors. This study aimed to characterize neurocognitive impairment, neurobehavioral symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depressive symptoms in newly diagnosed GBM patients; and to examine whether neurobehavioral symptoms, fatigue, sleep, and depressive symptoms influence neurocognitive performance. Methods This study was part of a prospective, inception cohort, single-arm exercise intervention in which GBM patients underwent a neuropsychological assessment shortly after diagnosis (median 4 weeks; ie, baseline) and 3, 6, 12, and 18 months later, or until tumor progression. Here, we present baseline data. Forty-five GBM patients (mean age = 55 years) completed objective neurocognitive tests, and self-report measures of neurobehavioral symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depressive symptoms. Results Compared to normative samples, GBM patients scored significantly lower on all neurocognitive tests, with 34 (76%) patients exhibiting neurocognitive impairment. Specifically, 53% exhibited impairment in memory retention, 51% in executive function, 42% in immediate recall, 41% in verbal fluency, and 24% in attention. There were high rates of clinically elevated sleep disturbance (70%), fatigue (57%), depressive symptoms (16%), and neurobehavioral symptoms (27%). A multivariate regression analysis revealed that depressive symptoms are significantly associated with neurocognitive impairment. Conclusions GBM patients are vulnerable to adverse outcomes including neurocognitive impairment, neurobehavioral symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depressive symptoms shortly after diagnosis, prior to completing chemoradiation. Those with increased depressive symptoms are more likely to demonstrate neurocognitive impairment, highlighting the need for early identification and treatment of depression in this population.

Abstract
Background To achieve patient-centric quality care in neuro-oncology, all aspects of the disease and its impact on quality survival need to be considered. This includes the psychological consequences of a brain tumor diagnosis and subsequent life-altering experiences. Far too often the voice of our patients is unheard. Empowering patients to advocate for their own psychological needs is essential. Methods Data were derived from four focus groups with adult patients with brain tumors (N = 15; M age = 46 years, 53% female). A trained moderator led each 90-min group and posed semi-structured questions regarding patients' care needs throughout their neuro-oncological disease trajectory. Emphasis was placed on the quality of life and distress reduction. Common themes were identified via thematic content analysis using NVivo software. A high inter-rater reliability (M kappa = 0.92, range = 0.85-0.93) was achieved. Two themes are presented here: Emotional Response to Stressors and Existential Considerations. Results Of the two themes presented, 14 codes emerged. Codes were classified into three broad categories: Fear, Despair, and Resilience. The frequency of each category ranged from 31.4% to 34.7%. Example quotes and a discussion of each category follows. Conclusions It is imperative that we include the patient perspective in the development of neuro-oncology programs, thereby considering the quality of survival in addition to quantity. Neuro-oncology quality care must be driven by our patients' experiences and should integrate support for emotional distress while promoting resilience throughout this life-threatening illness.

Abstract
Objective Anxiety and depression are common mental disorders in glioma patients. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors, prognostic role, and longitudinal changes in anxiety and depression in postoperative glioma patients. Methods Anxiety and depression were assessed by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at baseline, month (M) 6, M12, M24 and M36 in 270 glioma patients after surgical resection. Furthermore, comprehensive clinic characteristics and treatment-related information were collected. Results Gender (female vs. male) (P = 0.014, odds ratio (OR) = 1.974), marital status (single/divorced/widowed vs. married) (P = 0.019, OR = 2.172), Karnofsky performance status (KPS) score (≤70 vs. > 70) (P = 0.002, OR = 2.556), World Health Organization (WHO) classification (high-grade glioma (HGG) vs. low-grade glioma (LGG)) (P = 0.005, OR = 2.155), and postoperative complications (yes vs. not) (P = 0.001, OR = 2.525) were independently related to anxiety occurrence. Marital status (single/divorced/widowed vs. married) (P = 0.034, OR = 2.026), KPS score (≤70 vs. > 70) (P < 0.001, OR = 3.880), WHO classification (HGG vs. LGG) (P = 0.032, OR = 1.810), and postoperative complications (yes vs. not) (P = 0.001, OR = 2.602) were independently related to depression occurrence. Besides, anxiety (P = 0.038) and depression (P = 0.013) were linked with shorter overall survival (OS), and depression was an independent risk factor for worse OS (P = 0.040, hazard ratio = 1.596). More importantly, anxiety and depression remained at a high prevalence during a 3-year follow-up. Conclusion Gender, marital status, KPS score, WHO classification, and postoperative complications are risk factors for anxiety and depression; moreover, anxiety and depression are at high prevalence continuously and correlated with worse survival in postoperative glioma patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite their significant distress, supportive care interventions for caregivers of glioma patients are generally lacking. And, whether caregivers are more likely to benefit from interventions targeting patient-caregiver dyads or caregivers individually is unknown. This pilot randomized controlled trial compared the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a dyadic yoga (DY) versus an individual caregiver yoga (CY) intervention as a supportive care strategy for family caregivers. METHODS Patient-caregiver dyads were randomized to a DY, CY or usual care (UC) arm. DY and CY interventions were delivered over 15 sessions. Caregivers completed assessments of their depressive symptoms, quality of life (QOL), and caregiving reactions at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks, and a subset completed qualitative interviews at 12 weeks. RESULTS With a consent rate of 63%, 67 dyads were randomized. Attendance in the DY was higher than in the CY group (session means, DY = 12.23, CY = 9.00; p = 0.06). Caregivers (79% female; 78% non-Hispanic White; mean age, 53 years) reported significantly more subjective benefit in the CY arm than in the DY arm (d = 2.1; p < .01), which was consistent with the qualitative assessment. There were medium effect sizes for improved mental QOL (d = 0.46) and financial burden (d = 0.53) in favor of the CY over the UC group. Caregivers in the CY group reported more caregiving esteem (d = 0.56) and less health decline (d = 0.60) than those in the DY group. CONCLUSION Individual rather than dyadic delivery may be a superior supportive care approach for this vulnerable caregiver population. A larger, adequately powered efficacy trial is warranted.

Abstract
As a result of treatment and diagnosis, adults with primary or metastatic brain tumors experience comorbidities that impacts their health and well-being. The Children's Oncology Group has guideline recommendations for childhood survivors of brain tumors; however, guidelines for monitoring long-term sequela among adult brain tumor survivors are lacking. The purpose of this review is to present the screening recommendations for the long-term complications after brain tumor treatment from a multidisciplinary panel of healthcare professionals. Chronic complications identified include cognitive dysfunction, vasculopathy, endocrinopathy, ophthalmic, ototoxicity, physical disability, sleep disturbance, mood disorder, unemployment, financial toxicity, and secondary malignancy. We invited specialists across disciplines to perform a literature search and provide expert recommendations for surveillance for long-term complications for adult brain tumor survivors. The Brain Tumor Center Survivorship Committee recommends routine screening using laboratory testing, subjective assessment of symptoms, and objective evaluations to appropriately monitor the complications of brain tumor treatments. Effective monitoring and treatment should involve collaboration with primary care providers and may require referral to other specialties and support services to provide patient-centered care during neuro-oncology survivorship. Further research is necessary to document the incidence and prevalence of medical complications as well as evaluate the efficacy of screening and neuro-oncology survivorship programs.

Abstract
Simple Summary High-grade glioma (HGG) is the most severe type of brain cancer. At different stages of the disease, affected persons are at high risk of symptoms of depression and anxiety. If undiagnosed and untreated, these symptoms might become severe and compromise the patient’s quality of life. Improved knowledge on the prevalence, mechanisms and clinical risk factors underlying the etiology of depression and anxiety in this population is required. This may help to increase awareness on the importance of integrating consistent assessment of mood symptoms with the clinical follow-up and provide insights for developing personalized psychosocial interventions. Abstract High-grade glioma (HGG) is associated with several external and internal stressors that may induce mood alterations at all stages of the disease. Symptoms of depression and anxiety in persons with glioma have multifactorial etiology and require active follow-up. We reviewed the literature data on the prevalence, mechanisms likely involved in the etiology of mood alterations in persons with HGG and psychosocial interventions found beneficial in treating these symptoms. We also investigated the prevalence and clinical variables that could increase the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms in a group of patients with HGG at two disease time-points: after surgery, before and 1 year after chemoradiotherapy. Literature findings revealed complex mechanisms underlying these symptoms and highlighted the importance of providing early access to palliative care. Our results show a high rate of anxiety and depression symptoms in the first stage of the disease and increased concomitance of these symptoms at the 1-year follow-up. Depression and anxiety symptoms at 1 year after the end of chemoradiotherapy were associated with the presence of symptoms at the first stage of the disease and tumor progression. Antiepileptic drugs and corticosteroid intake did not increase the risk of depressive and anxious symptoms among patients. Active management of mood alterations is an essential part of the care and contributes to patients’ well-being and quality of life.

Abstract
In patients with gliomas, depression is a common complication that may cause severe psychological barriers and deteriorate the patient’s quality of life (QoL). Currently, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) is the most commonly used tool to diagnose depression in patients with gliomas. Female sex, unmarried status, low education level, high tumor grade, and a history of mental illness may increase the risks of depression and depressive symptoms in patients with gliomas. The QoL of patients with gliomas can be directly reduced by depression. Therefore, the evaluation and intervention of mood disorders could improve the overall QoL of patients with gliomas. Antidepressant use has become a treatment strategy for patients with gliomas and comorbid depression. This narrative review summarizes the current issues related to depression in patients with gliomas, including the prevalence, risk factors, and diagnostic criteria of depression as well as changes in QoL caused by comorbid depression and antidepressant use. The purpose of this review is to guide clinicians to assess the psychological status of patients with gliomas and to provide clinicians and oncologists with a new treatment strategy to improve the prognosis of such patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Managing Cancer and Living Meaningfully (CALM) is an evidence-based, brief, semi-structured psychotherapy designed to help patients with advanced cancer cope with the practical and profound challenges of their illness. However, no study to date has investigated its feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness in adults with malignant glioma, despite the well-documented incidence of psychological distress in this vulnerable and underserved population. METHODS Fourteen patients with glioma and elevated symptoms of depression and/or death anxiety enrolled in the trial: 83% glioblastoma, 75% female, Mage = 56 years (SD = 15.1; range = 27-81). Feasibility was assessed based on established metrics. Acceptability was measured by post-session surveys and post-intervention interviews. Preliminary intervention effects were explored using paired t-tests, comparing psychological distress at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS Of the 14 enrolled patients, 12 were evaluable. Nine completed the study (75% retention rate). Three patients withdrew due to substantial disease progression which affected their ability to participate. Participants reported high perceived benefit, and all recommended the program to others. Baseline to post-intervention assessments indicated reductions in death anxiety, generalized anxiety, and depression, and increases in spirituality. Quality of life and fear of cancer recurrence remained stable throughout the study period. CONCLUSIONS CALM appears feasible for use with adults with malignant glioma. Enrollment and retention rates were high and comparable to psychotherapy trials for patients with advanced cancer. High perceived benefit and reductions in symptoms of death anxiety, generalized anxiety, and depression were reported by participants. These findings are extremely encouraging and support further study of CALM in neuro-oncology. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT04646213 registered on 11/27/2020.

Abstract
PURPOSE Brain tumor patients report an overwhelming sense of uncertainty when navigating the course of their terminal disease. Historically, organizational experts and/or treating physicians have established neuro-oncology programs. However, given the disease burden and incurable nature of current medical treatments, patient-centric care should be prioritized alongside institutional and academic objectives. Integrating patient perspectives into interdisciplinary programmatic development can improve comprehensive care and empower patients to advocate for their own quality healthcare needs. METHODS Data was derived from four focus groups with adult brain tumor patients (N = 15; Mage = 46 years, 53% female). A trained moderator led each 90-min group and posed semi-structured questions regarding patients' care needs throughout their neuro-oncological disease trajectory. Emphasis was placed on quality of life and psychological distress reduction for both patients and their loved ones. Common themes were identified via thematic content analysis using NVivo software. A high inter-rater reliability (Mkappa = 0.92, range= 0.85-0.93) was achieved. RESULTS Six distinct themes emerged, where the frequency of each theme ranged from 12.5 to 23.3%. Specifically, patients discussed relational concerns, navigation of interdisciplinary care, neurobehavioral impacts, emotional responses to stressors, existential concerns, and caregiver support. A discussion of themes follows. CONCLUSIONS It is imperative that we include the patient perspective in the development of neuro-oncology programs; considering the quality of survival in addition to quantity. Neuro-oncology quality care themes identified were relational concerns, navigating interdisciplinary care, neurobehavioral impact, emotional response to stressors, existential concerns, and caregiver support. A paramount concentration for comprehensive neuro-oncology programs must include patients' quality needs.

Abstract
Background While diagnosis with a high-grade intracranial tumor is known to be associated with increased psychosocial burden, the burdens associated with meningioma are less well described. This study aimed to investigate the mental health burden in patients with meningiomas who have undergone surgical resection or serial observation, so as to identify and enhance awareness of gaps in care. Methods The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was administered to participants. Fisher’s Exact tests were performed to evaluate frequency distributions and t-tests were applied to compare postoperative and non-surgical patients’ HADS scores. Semi-structured interviews were completed on a subset of participants. Thematic analysis of interviews identified emerging themes. Results Thirty patients with intracranial meningiomas met inclusion criteria. The cohort’s mean age was 56.01 years and 66.67% were women (n = 20). Fourteen underwent surgery; sixteen were treated conservatively with observation. The average time since diagnosis of the sample was 37.6 months. Prevalence of mild to severe symptoms of anxiety was 28.6% amongst surgical management patients and 50% for active surveillance patients (p = 0.325). The prevalence of mild to severe symptoms of depression was 7.14% amongst surgical management patients and 6.25% for active surveillance patients (p = 0.533). Emerging themes from eight interviews reveal the influence of resilience, uncertainty and time, social support, interactions with medical experts, and difficulties during recovery on mental health. Conclusion The findings from the present study reveal that patients with meningiomas experience a significant mental health burden, illustrating the need for enhanced patient-centred care focusing on mental health. Abstract
Simple Summary Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) comprise 13–16% of glial tumors. As survival for LGG patients has been improving, it is important to consider the effects of diagnosis and treatment on mental health. The aims of this retrospective cohort study were to determine the incidence, prevalence, and risk factors of mental health disorders (MHD) in LGG patients. In our analysis including 20,432 LGG patients, we identified an MHD prevalence of 60.9%. Of those with no history of prior MHD, 16.9% of LGG patients developed a new onset of MHD within 12 months of LGG diagnosis. Risk factors included female gender, ages 35–54, presence of seizures, and first-line surgical treatment. Therefore, proactive surveillance and counseling surrounding MHDs are recommended among LGG patients. Impact of surgery on brain networks affecting mood should also be considered. Abstract Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) comprise 13–16% of glial tumors. As survival for LGG patients has been gradually improving, it is essential that the effects of diagnosis and disease progression on mental health be considered. This retrospective cohort study queried the IBM Watson Health MarketScan® Database to describe the incidence and prevalence of mental health disorders (MHDs) among LGG patients and identify associated risk factors. Among the 20,432 LGG patients identified, 12,436 (60.9%) had at least one MHD. Of those who never had a prior MHD, as documented in the claims record, 1915 (16.7%) had their first, newly diagnosed MHD within 12 months after LGG diagnosis. Patients who were female (odds ratio (OR), 1.14, 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.03–1.26), aged 35–44 (OR, 1.20, 95% CI, 1.03–1.39), and experienced glioma-related seizures (OR, 2.19, 95% CI, 1.95–2.47) were significantly associated with MHD incidence. Patients who underwent resection (OR, 2.58, 95% CI, 2.19–3.04) or biopsy (OR, 2.17, 95% CI, 1.68–2.79) were also more likely to develop a MHD compared to patients who did not undergo a first-line surgical treatment. These data support the need for active surveillance, proactive counseling, and management of MHDs in patients with LGG. Impact of surgery on brain networks affecting mood should also be considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients diagnosed with low-grade glioma (LGG) must live with constant knowledge of an upcoming malignant tumor transformation which may lead to increased anxiety and reduced quality of life. Here, we (1) analyzed the prevalence and risk factors for distress in LGG patients using (2) different screening tools to subsequently (3) evaluate their need for psychological support. METHOD Patients with LGG-suspicious findings in MRI studies as well as patients with histopathological confirmed LGG were screened using three established self-assessment instruments (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Distress Thermometer, EORTC-QLQ-C30-BN20). Screening results were correlated with sociodemographic factors. RESULTS One hundred forty-nine patients (74 men and 75 women) were prospectively included. Patients were further divided into different subgroups regarding the time of screening and diagnosis. An increased level of distress was observed in 20.8% (mean score 1.21, 95% CI 1.15-1.28) of all patients screened by HADS. Significant associated factors were pre-existing psychiatric disorders (p = 0.003) and psychotropic medication (p = 0.029). HRQoL (p = 0.022) and global health item (p = 0.015), as well as future uncertainty (p = 0.047), assessed by the EORTC-QLQ-C30-BN20 were significantly higher in those patients without histopathological diagnosis. Increased distress was significantly correlated with results in chosen sub-items of the HRQoL questionnaire (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate the need for frequent distress screening. If specific tools are not available, HRQoL questionnaires can also be used. Patients with pre-existing psychological stress should be offered additional psychooncological support, irrespectively of the time of screening or tumor diagnosis. Abstract
Simple Summary After years of gauging the efficacy of tumor-directed therapies primarily by means of survival, a broader perspective on therapeutic outcome also focusses on patients’ everyday functional abilities. Besides neurocognition, a matter of high clinical relevance, “social cognition” may also affect well-being and quality of life (QoL) in brain tumor patients. Abilities that enable individuals to establish and maintain social relationships are summarized under the umbrella term “sociocognitive functioning”. These abilities encompass the understanding and sharing of emotional and mental states of other individuals as well as skills to detect and resolve interpersonal problems. These sociocognitive abilities may be challenged in highly demanding life situations such as brain tumor diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we summarize the literature on psychosocial burden and sociocognitive functioning in adult brain tumor patients. Abstract Brain tumors may represent devastating diseases and neuro-oncological research in the past solely focused on development of better treatments to achieve disease control. The efficacy of tumor-directed treatment was evaluated by progression-free and overall survival. However, as neuro-oncological treatment became more effective, preservation and improvement of quality of life (QoL) was noticed to represent an important additional outcome measure. The need to balance between aggressive tumor-directed treatment and preservation of QoL was increasingly acknowledged in brain tumor patients. QoL is comprised by many determinants; one of those may have been rather neglected so far: social cognition. Since diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors represent demanding life situations, patients may experience increased psychosocial burden and the negative consequences of illness on well-being may be buffered by intact social relationships. These skills to build and maintain supportive social relationships essentially depend on the ability to empathize with others and to recognize and appropriately address social conflicts, i.e., “sociocognitive functioning”. Therefore, sociocognitive functions may influence QoL and treatment outcome. In this article, we review the literature on psychosocial burden and sociocognitive functioning in adult brain tumor patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas account for 15-30% of pituitary tumors. Studies exploring the role of an intracranial tumor diagnosis, specifically nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas, on mental health disorders (MHDs) in patients have been limited. We characterize the incidence and factors affecting the development of MHDs in untreated pituitary adenomas. METHODS Utilizing a large-scale private payor database, MarketScan, we performed a retrospective study of patients with an untreated pituitary adenomas and corresponding MHD. RESULTS We found that in patients diagnosed with an untreated pituitary adenomas, approximately 15% were newly diagnosed with a MHD within 1 year of the pituitary adenoma diagnosis. Independent risk factors included female gender and substance abuse. Headaches, visual symptoms, and higher Charlson Co-morbidity indexes were also independently associated with a subsequent diagnosis of MHD. On multivariable analysis, patients in the pituitary tumor cohort were more likely to be diagnosed with a MHD than those in the matched cohort (aOR: 1.31, CI: 1.19-1.44). CONCLUSION By identifying risk factors, advanced screening can focus on non-operative pituitary adenoma patients at high-risk for the development of MHD.

Abstract
Background Screening glioma patients regularly for possible mood disorders may facilitate early identification and referral of patients at risk. This study evaluated if the EORTC QLQ‐C30 Emotional Functioning (EF) scale could be used as an initial screening measure to identify patients possibly having a mood disorder. Methods EORTC QLQ‐C30 EF and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores were collected as part of a study assessing the impact of timing of patient‐reported outcome assessments on actual health‐related quality of life outcomes (N = 99). Spearman correlations and Mann‐Whitney U tests were used to determine the association between the EF and HADS (sub)scales. Receiver Operating Characteristic analyses were performed to determine optimal cut‐off EF scores to identify patients possibly having a mood disorder (i.e. HADS subscale score ≥8 points). Results EF and HADS (sub)scales correlated moderately (HADS‐A: r = −0.65; HADS‐D: r = −0.52). Significant EF score differences were found between patients with HADS ≥8 versus <8 points (HADS‐A: mean difference (MD) = 32 and HADS‐D: MD = 23). The EF scale had excellent (HADS‐A; AUC = 0.88) and borderline excellent (HADS‐D; AUC = 0.78) distinguishing capabilities. A statistically optimal (EF score <80) and a most inclusive (sensitivity of 100%, corresponding to an EF score <97) EF cut‐off score correctly identified 88.0% and 96.0% of patients with a possible mood disorder, respectively. Conclusion EORTC QLQ‐C30 EF scale seems to be an appropriate screening measure to identify glioma patients possibly having a mood disorder in need of further assessment.

Abstract
Background The landscape of glioma research has evolved in the past 20 years to include numerous large, multi-institutional, database efforts compiling either clinical data on glioma patients, molecular data on glioma specimens, or a combination of both. While these strategies can provide a wealth of information for glioma research, obtaining information regarding data availability and access specifications can be challenging. Methods We reviewed the literature for ongoing clinical, molecular, and combined database efforts related to glioma research to provide researchers with a curated overview of the current state of glioma database resources. Results We identified and reviewed a total of 20 databases with data collection spanning from 1975 to 2022. Surveyed databases included both low- and high-grade gliomas, and data elements included over 100 clinical variables and 12 molecular data types. Select database strengths included large sample sizes and a wide variety of variables available, while limitations of some databases included complex data access requirements and a lack of glioma-specific variables. Conclusions This review highlights current databases and registries and their potential utility in clinical and genomic glioma research. While many high-quality resources exist, the fluid nature of glioma taxonomy makes it difficult to isolate a large cohort of patients with a pathologically confirmed diagnosis. Large, well-defined, and publicly available glioma datasets have the potential to expand the reach of glioma research and drive the field forward.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression commonly develops as a comorbid disorder related to glioma, which affects the patients' physical function and prognosis. Circulating inflammatory cytokines are potential predictors of depression in disparate cancers. However, less research has specifically investigated this aspect within the context of glioma. STUDY OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of depression in patients with glioma and draw a comparison of the ability to predict it through diverse inflammatory cytokines. METHODS A total of 203 patients with stage I-IV glioma were enrolled in this study. Depression was evaluated according to the Hamilton Depression Scale, and the plasma inflammatory cytokines levels were simultaneously measured. We performed the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to confirm the abilities of identified inflammatory cytokines to predict depression. RESULTS Among the 203 patients with glioma, 135 (66.5%) showed obvious depressive symptoms. Proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6 (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.76) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (AUC = 0.75), showed good performance in accurately predicting depression in patients with glioma. These inflammatory cytokines indicated great potential to be depression biomarkers regardless of the patients' disparate treatment experience. CONCLUSION With their relatively simple and time-saving measurement procedures, inflammatory cytokines should be seriously considered effective clinical screening and diagnostic tools, as well as potential biomarkers for depression in patients with glioma.

Abstract
The psycho-oncological burden related to the diagnosis of an intracranial tumor is often accompanied by neurocognitive deficits and changes in character, overall affecting health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and activities of daily living. Regular administration of adequate screening tools is crucial to ensure a timely detection of needs for support and/or specific interventions. Although efforts have been made to assure the quality of neuro-oncological care, clinical assessment practice of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) remains overall heterogeneous, calling for a concise recommendation tailored to neuro-oncological patients. Therefore, this survey, promoted by the German Society of Neurosurgery, was conducted to evaluate the status quo of health care resources and PRO/neurocognition assessment practices throughout departments of surgical neuro-oncology in Germany. 72/127 (57%) of registered departments participated in the study, including 83% of all university hospital units. A second aim was to shed light on the impact of quality assurance strategies (i.e., department certification as part of an integrative neuro-oncology cancer center; CNOC) on the assessment practice, controlled for interacting structural factors, i.e., university hospital status (UH) and caseload. Despite an overall good to excellent availability of relevant health care structures (psycho-oncologist: 90%, palliative care unit: 97%, neuropsychology: 75%), a small majority of departments practice patient-centered screenings (psycho-oncological burden: 64%, HRQoL: 76%, neurocognition: 58%), however, much less frequently outside the framework of clinical trials. In this context, CNOC affiliation, representing a specific health care quality assurance process, was associated with significantly stronger PRO assessment practices regarding psycho-oncological burden, independent of UH status (common odds ratio=5.0, p=0.03). Nevertheless, PRO/neurocognitive assessment practice was not consistent even across CNOC. The overall most commonly used PRO/neurocognitive assessment tools were the Distress Thermometer (for psycho-oncological burden; 64%), the EORTC QLQ-C30 combined with the EORTC QLQ-BN20 (for HRQoL; 52%) and the Mini-Mental Status Test (for neurocognition; 67%), followed by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA; 33%). Accordingly, for routine clinical screening, the authors recommend the Distress Thermometer and the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BN20, complemented by the MoCA as a comparatively sensitive yet basic neurocognitive test. This recommendation is intended to encourage more regular, adequate, and standardized routine assessments in neuro-oncological practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative delirium is a common surgical complication that can be associated with poorer outcome. Many patients with brain tumors experience delirium after surgery. We hypothesize that patients who experience delirium after resection of a brain tumor will have worse outcomes post surgery in terms of mortality, disposition, and length of stay compared with those without postoperative delirium. We also examine differences between nurse and physician diagnoses of delirium. METHODS Data from patients undergoing brain tumor resection at University of Missouri Hospital were retrospectively collected. Delirium was defined using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-5 criteria. Patients with delirium were compared with patients without delirium using chi-squared test, Cohen Kappa value, and binomial proportion analysis at 95% confidence intervals or P < 0.05. RESULTS Of 500 patients having brain tumor resections, 93 (18.6%) were diagnosed with postoperative delirium. Patients with delirium had higher 30-day mortality (9.78% vs. 1.48%; P < 0.0001), required restraints more often (42.39% vs. 5.91%, P < 0.0001), had longer hospital length of stay (14.3 vs. 6.3 days; P < 0.0001), and increased skilled nursing facility disposition (57.3% vs. 26.11%; P < 0.0001) than patients without delirium. Diagnosis of delirium between nursing staff and clinicians moderately correlated (Kappa 0.5677 ± 0.0536). CONCLUSIONS Delirium, a common postoperative complication after brain tumor surgery, is associated with longer length of stay, increased disposition to skilled nursing facility, and increased 30-day mortality. These findings reinforce the importance of early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of postoperative delirium in brain tumor resection patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurosurgeons have limited tools in their armamentarium to visualize critical brain networks during surgical planning. Quicktome was designed using machine-learning to generate robust visualization of important brain networks that can be used with standard neuronavigation to minimize those deficits. We sought to see whether Quicktome could help localize important cerebral networks and tracts during intracerebral surgery. METHODS We report on all patients who underwent keyhole intracranial surgery with available Quicktome-enabled neuronavigation. We retrospectively analyzed the locations of the lesions and determined functional networks at risks, including chief executive network, default mode network, salience, corticospinal/sensorimotor, language, neglect, and visual networks. We report on the postoperative neurologic outcomes of the patients and retrospectively determined whether the outcomes could be explained by Quicktome's functional localizations. RESULTS Fifteen high-risk patients underwent craniotomies for intra-axial tumors, with the exception of one meningioma and one case of leukoencephalopathy. Eight patients were male. The median age was 49.6 years. Quicktome was readily integrated in our existing navigation system in every case. New postoperative neurologic deficits occurred in 8 patients. All new deficits, except for one resulting from a postoperative stroke, were expected and could be explained by preoperative findings by Quicktome. In addition, in those who did not have new neurologic deficits, Quicktome offered explanations for their outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Quicktome helps to visualize complex functional connectomic networks and tracts by seamlessly integrating into existing neuronavigation platforms. The added information may assist in reducing neurological deficits and offer explanations for postsurgical outcomes.

Abstract
Objective At present, it is not clear whether Mood Disorders (MD) and poor Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in the glioma population correlate with features of the tumor, or rather with secondary symptoms associated with treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of MD and decline in HRQoL in glioma patients, and to determine the main factors associated with these two variables. Methods 80 patients affected by lower-grade gliomas (LGGs) and 65 affected by high-grade gliomas (HGGs) were evaluated, from admission up to 12 months after surgery, for MD, HRQoL, clinical characteristics, and cognitive functions. Independent factors associated with MD and low HRQoL were identified by using bivariate analysis. Results Data showed that prevalence of low HRQoL was comparable in both groups during all the time points assessed (pre, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery). In contrast at 6 months following surgery, HGGs showed a higher prevalence of MD compared to LGGs;. Bivariate analysis revealed that factors associated with MD and HRQoL in LGGs and HGGs were different over the course of the disease. In LGGs, from the pre-operative period to one year post surgery, MD and low HRQOL were associated with the occurrence of cognitive deficits and, from the third month after surgery onward, they were also associated with the effect exerted by adjuvant treatments. In HGGs, MD were associated with cognitive deficits at 3 and 6 months after surgery, along with older age (65-75 years); HRQoL, in its Physical component in particular, was associated with older age only from 6 months after surgery. Conclusion Factors associated with MD and low HRQoL were different in LGGs and HGGs over the course of the disease. In LGGs the effect of adjuvant treatments was prominent in determining the prevalence of both MD and poor HRQoL from the third month after surgery onward. In HGGs, MD and HRQoL were associated with age, at 3 and 6 months after surgery. In both, the occurrence of cognitive deficits was significantly associated with MD.

Abstract
Patients with brain tumors have an increased risk for depression, whose underlying pathomechanism may involve dysregulated tryptophan/kynurenine metabolism. In this study, we analyzed the relation of depressive symptoms to clinical and tumor characteristics as well as cerebral and systemic tryptophan metabolism in patients with primary brain tumors. Sixty patients with newly-diagnosed or recurrent primary brain tumor underwent testing with the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and 34 patients also had positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with alpha-[11C]methyl-L-tryptophan (AMT). BDI-II scores were correlated with clinical and tumor-related variables, cerebral regional AMT metabolism measured in the non-tumoral hemisphere, and plasma tryptophan metabolite levels. Sixteen patients (27%) had BDI-II scores indicating depression, including 6 with moderate/severe depression. High BDI-II scores were independent of clinical and tumor-related variables except lower Karnofsky Performance Status scores. In patients with recurrent malignant gliomas, depression was associated with shorter survival (hazard ratio: 3.7; p = 0.048). High BDI-II total and somatic subscale scores were associated with higher frontal cortical and thalamic AMT metabolic values measured on PET. In contrast, plasma tryptophan and kynurenine metabolite levels did not correlate with the BDI-II scores. In conclusion, our results confirm previous data that depression affects more than ¼ of patients with primary brain tumors, it is largely independent of tumor characteristics and is associated with shorter survival in patients with recurrent malignant gliomas. On PET imaging, higher tryptophan metabolism in the frontal cortex and thalamus was found in those with brain tumor-associated depression and supports the role of dysregulated tryptophan/kynurenine metabolism in this condition.

Abstract
Background Low-grade glioma (LGG) is a relatively rare type of brain tumour. The use of antidepressant, sedative and anti-epileptic drugs can reflect the burden of the disease. While epilepsy is well-described in patients with LGG, less is known about depression and anxiety. Methods We used nationwide registers to study the use (dispense) of antidepressants, sedatives, and anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) before and after histopathological LGG diagnosis (WHO grade II). A total of 485 adult patients with a first-time diagnosis and a matched control cohort (n = 2412) were included. Patterns of use were analysed from one year prior to until one year following index date (date of surgery). Logistic regression analysis identified predictors for postoperative use. Results At one year before index date, patients were dispensed AEDs 4 times more than controls, while antidepressants and sedatives were similar. Sedatives and AED peaked shortly after index date at 25 and 69%, respectively. AEDs then stabilized while sedatives decreased rapidly. For antidepressants, a delayed increase was seen after index date, stabilizing at 12%. At one year after index date, the use of antidepressants, sedatives, and AEDs among patients was 2, 3, and 26 times higher, respectively, compared to controls. Predictor for use of AEDs and sedatives at one year following index was previous use and/or a related diagnosis. Female sex and later index year were additional predictors for antidepressants. Conclusions Use of antidepressants, sedatives and AEDs is elevated following diagnosis of LGG. Antidepressants were more commonly dispensed to female patients and in recent years. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize the rates of depression across primary cancer sites, and determine the effects of comorbid depression among surgical cancer patients on established quality of care indicators, non-routine discharge and readmission. METHODS Patients undergoing surgical resection for cancer were selected from the Nationwide Readmissions Database (2010-2014). Multivariable analysis adjusted for patient and hospital level characteristics to ascertain the effect of depression on post-operative outcomes and 30-day readmission rates. Non-routine discharge encompasses discharge to skilled nursing, inpatient rehabilitation, and intermediate care facilities, as well as discharge home with home health services. RESULTS Among 851,606 surgically treated cancer patients, 8.1% had a comorbid diagnosis of depression at index admission (n = 69,174). Prevalence of depression was highest among patients with cancer of the brain (10.9%), female genital organs (10.9%), and lung (10.5%), and lowest among those with prostate cancer (4.9%). Depression prevalence among women (10.9%) was almost twice that of men (5.7%). Depression was associated with non-routine discharge after surgery (OR 1.20, CI:1.18-1.23, p < 0.0001*) and hospital readmission within 30 days (OR 1.12, CI:1.09-1.15, p < 0.001*). CONCLUSION Rates of depression vary amongst surgically treated cancer patients by primary tumor site. Comorbid depression in these patients is associated with increased likelihood of non-routine discharge and readmission.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of reminiscence therapy-based care (RTBC) program on anxiety, depression, patients satisfaction, and survival benefit in glioma patients after tumor resection.A total of 150 eligible glioma patients were randomized into the RTBC group (N = 75, receiving RTBC) and the control care (CC) group (N = 75, receiving CC). Interventions were performed twice a month for 12 months. Anxiety was evaluated by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for anxiety score and Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) score; meanwhile, depression was evaluated by HADS for depression score and Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS) score; additionally, patients satisfaction was scored. A 36-month follow-up was performed, and accumulating overall survival (OS) were calculated.Both anxiety level and depression level were reduced in the RTBC group compared with the CC group at month 9 and month 12 (all P < .05); meanwhile, the proportion of anxious patients and depressed patients were decreased in the RTBC group compared with the CC group at month 12 (all P < .05). Moreover, patients satisfaction scores were increased in the RTBC group compared to the CC group at month 6, month 9, and month 12 (all P < .05). Additionally, accumulating OS showed an increasing tendency in the RTBC group compared to the CC group, but no statistical significance was observed (P = .186).RTBC program ameliorates anxiety, depression, and promotes patients satisfaction in glioma patients after tumor resection.

Anxiety and depression in glioma patients: prevalence, risk factors, and their correlation with survival. Ir J Med Sci 2020; 190:1155-1164. Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and prognostic value of anxiety and depression in glioma patients. METHODS A total of 190 glioma patients who underwent resection were consecutively enrolled. Anxiety was assessed using hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) and Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS); depression was assessed with the use of HADS and Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS). All patients were followed up to death or 36 months. Overall survival (OS) was calculated according to the survival data. RESULTS The prevalence of anxiety ranged from 36.3 to 37.4%, and the prevalence of depression ranged from 28.4 to 32.6% based on different assessment scales. Female, diabetes, and increased WHO grade were correlated with HADS anxiety and SAS anxiety, while female, single/divorced/widowed status, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and CKD were associated with HADS depression and SDS depression. Further multivariate logistic analyses disclosed the following: single/divorced/widowed status and WHO grade were independent risk factors for HADS anxiety; female and hyperlipidemia were independent risk factors for SAS anxiety; whereas education duration (< 12 years), single/divorced/widowed status, and CKD were independent risk factors for HADS depression; female, single/divorced/widowed status, and hyperlipidemia were independent risk factors for SDS depression. Besides, HADS anxiety, SAS anxiety and SDS depression were correlated with shorter OS, while HADS depression was not. CONCLUSIONS Our findings about the risk factors and prognostic value of anxiety and depression might aid for their early prevention and prognosis improvement in glioma patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Prior studies have demonstrated elevated rates of depression in patients with malignant brain tumor; however, the prevalence and effect on surgical outcomes in patients with low-grade gliomas (LGG) and benign brain tumors (BBT) remain unknown. Readmission and non-routine discharge, which includes discharge to skilled nursing, rehabilitative, and other inpatient facilities, are well-established quality of care indicators. We sought to analyze the association between comorbid depression and non-routine discharge, readmission, and other post-operative inpatient outcomes in patients with LGG and BBT. METHODS The Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2010 to 2014 was retrospectively queried to select for surgically treated patients with LGG and BBT. Multivariable logistic regression models adjusting for patient and hospital characteristics were used to determine the effects of comorbid depression on post-operative outcomes. Interaction of gender and depression on non-routine disposition was analyzed. RESULTS We identified 31,654 craniotomies for resection of BBT and LGG (2010-2014). The majority of patients (64.1%) were female. The rate of depression comorbid with BBT and LGG was 11.9%. Depression was associated with non-routine discharge after surgery (OR 1.19, p 0.0002*), but was not associated with increased morbidity, mortality, or readmission at 30 or 90 days. The rate of comorbid depression was higher among female than male patients (14.0 vs. 8.0%). Depression in males was associated with a 38% increased likelihood of non-routine disposition (p = 0.0002*), while depression in females was associated with a 13% increased likelihood of non-routine disposition (p = 0.03*). CONCLUSION Depression is prevalent in patients with LGG and BBT and is associated with increased risk of non-routine discharge following surgical intervention. The increased likelihood of non-routine disposition is greater for males than that for females. Awareness of the risk factors for depression may aid in early screening and intervention and improve overall patient outcomes.

Abstract
Brain tumors (BT) are between the eight most common cancers among persons aged 40 years, with an average survival time of 10 years for patients affected by non-malignant brain tumor. Some patients continue to work, reporting difficulties in work-related activities, or even job loss. The purpose of the present study was to review the existing information about the ability people with BT to return to work and to identify factors associated with job loss. We performed a systematic review on SCOPUS and EMBASE for peer-reviewed papers that reported studies assessing work ability in patients with BT that were published in the period from January 2010 to January 2020. Out of 800 identified records, 7 articles were selected for analysis, in which 1,507 participants with BT were enrolled overall. Three main themes emerged: the impact of neuropsychological functioning on work productivity, the change of employment status for long-term survivors and issues related to return to work processes. Based on the results of selected studies, it can be concluded that the impact of BT on workforce participation is determined by depressive symptoms and cognitive deficits, as well as by high short-term mortality but also on environmental barriers. Vocational Rehabilitation programs should be implemented to help patients wishing to return to or maintain their current work, as much as possible.

Abstract
Background Meningiomas are the most common primary tumor of the CNS. Studies investigating the impact of a brain tumor diagnosis on mental health disorders (MHDs) in patients have been limited. The objective of this work is to characterize the incidence and factors affecting the presence of MHDs in untreated meningiomas. Methods Using a large-scale private payer database, MarketScan, we performed a retrospective study of patients with an untreated meningioma and corresponding MHD. Results We found that in patients diagnosed with an untreated meningioma, approximately 16% were diagnosed with an MHD within 1 year of the diagnosis of the meningioma. Conclusion By identifying risk factors, appropriate screening can focus on patients at high-risk for the development of MHD.

Abstract
Background Antidepressant drugs have shown antitumor activity in preclinical glioblastoma studies. Antidepressant drug use, as well as its association with survival, in glioblastoma patients has not been well characterized on a population level. Methods Patient characteristics, including the frequency of antidepressant drug use, were assessed in a glioblastoma cohort diagnosed in a 10-year time frame between 2005 and 2014 in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Cox proportional hazards regression models were applied for multivariate analysis. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to estimate overall survival (OS) data and the log-rank test was performed for comparisons. Results A total of 404 patients with isocitrate dehydrogenase wild-type glioblastoma were included in this study. Sixty-five patients (16.1%) took antidepressant drugs at some point during the disease course. Patients were most commonly prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors at any time (N = 46, 70.8%). Nineteen patients (29.2%) were on antidepressant drugs at the time of their tumor diagnosis. No differences were observed in OS between those patients who had taken antidepressants at some point in their disease course and those who had not (P = .356). These data were confirmed in a multivariate analysis including age, Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), sex, extent of resection, O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status, and first-line treatment as cofounders (P = .315). Also, there was no association of use of drugs modulating voltage-dependent potassium channels (citalopram; escitalopram) with survival (P = .639). Conclusions This signal-seeking study does not support the hypothesis that antidepressants have antitumor efficacy in glioblastoma on a population level.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review succinctly summarizes the recent literature regarding etiological contributors to impaired neurocognitive function (NCF) in adult patients with glioma. A brief overview of intervention and prevention strategies is also provided. RECENT FINDINGS A majority of patients with glioma exhibit NCF deficits, most frequently in memory and executive functioning. Impairments are often disabling and associated with reduced quality of life and survival. Cause is multifactorial and includes the tumour itself, treatments received and associated comorbidities. Although modern techniques such as brain mapping, dosing modifications and prophylactic medication aim to improve the NCF outcomes following neurosurgical resection and radiation therapy, a sizeable proportion of patients continue to evidence treatment-related NCF declines related to adverse effects to both local and distributed cerebral networks. Numerous patient and tumour characteristics, including genetic markers and sociodemographic factors, influence the pattern and severity of NCF impairment. Some rehabilitative and pharmacologic approaches show promise in mitigating NCF impairment in this population, though benefits are somewhat modest and larger scale intervention studies are needed. SUMMARY Research regarding NCF in patients with glioma has dramatically proliferated, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying impaired NCF and pointing to potential interventions, though further work is needed.
