Abstract
The gut microbiota is of growing interest to clinicians and researchers. This is because there is a growing understanding that the gut microbiota performs many different functions, including involvement in metabolic and immune processes that are systemic in nature. The liver, with its important role in detoxifying and metabolizing products from the gut, is at the forefront of interactions with the gut microbiota. Many details of these interactions are not yet known to clinicians and researchers, but there is growing evidence that normal gut microbiota function is important for liver health. At the same time, factors affecting the gut microbiota, including nutrition or medications, may also have an effect through the gut-liver axis.

Abstract
Introduction Maternal synbiotic supplementation during pregnancy and lactation can significantly influence the immune system. Prebiotics and probiotics have a positive impact on the immune system by preventing or ameliorating among others intestinal disorders. This study focused on the immunomodulatory effects of B. breve M-16V and short chain galacto-oligosaccharides (scGOS)/long chain fructo-oligosachairdes (lcFOS), including systemic and mucosal compartments and milk composition. Methods Lewis rats were orally administered with the synbiotic or vehicle during pregnancy (21 days) and lactation (21 days). At the weaning day, small intestine (SI), mammary gland (MG), adipose tissue, milk, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), salivary gland (SG), feces and cecal content were collected from the mothers. Results The immunoglobulinome profile showed increased IgG2c in plasma and milk, as well as elevated sIgA in feces at weaning. The supplementation improved lipid metabolism through enhanced brown adipose tissue activity and reinforced the intestinal barrier by increasing the expression of Muc3, Cldn4, and Ocln. The higher production of short chain fatty acids in the cecum and increased Bifidobacterium counts suggest a potential positive impact on the gastrointestinal tract. Discussion These findings indicate that maternal synbiotic supplementation during gestation and lactation improves their immunological status and improved milk composition.

Abstract
Age and gender have been recognized as two pivotal covariates affecting the composition of the gut microbiota. However, their mediated variations in microbiota seem to be inconsistent across different countries and races. In this study, 613 individuals, whom we referred to as the "healthy" population, were selected from 1,018 volunteers through rigorous selection using 16S rRNA sequencing. Three enterotypes were identified, namely, Escherichia-Shigella, mixture (Bacteroides and Faecalibacterium), and Prevotella. Moreover, 11 covariates that explain the differences in microbiota were determined, with age being the predominant factor. Furthermore, age-related differences in alpha diversity, beta diversity, and core genera were observed in our cohort. Remarkably, after adjusting for 10 covariates other than age, abundant genera that differed between age groups were demonstrated. In contrast, minimal differences in alpha diversity, beta diversity, and differentially abundant genera were observed between male and female individuals. Furthermore, we also demonstrated the age trajectories of several well-known beneficial genera, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-producing genera, and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-producing genera. Overall, our study further elucidated the effects mediated by age and gender on microbiota differences, which are of significant importance for a comprehensive understanding of the gut microbiome spectrum in healthy individuals.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hyperemesis gravidarum has the potential to affect the long-term health of offspring. We examined whether maternal hyperemesis gravidarum was associated with the risk of hospitalization for childhood morbidity. METHODS We conducted a longitudinal cohort study of 1,189,000 children born in Quebec, Canada, between April 2006 and March 2021. The main exposure measure was maternal hyperemesis gravidarum requiring hospitalization in the first or second trimester. The outcome was any pediatric admission between birth and 16 years of age, with follow-up ending in March 2022. We used Cox regression models adjusted for maternal and socioeconomic factors to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between maternal hyperemesis gravidarum and childhood hospitalization. RESULTS Among 1,189,000 children, 6904 (0.6%) were exposed to maternal hyperemesis gravidarum. Hospitalization rates at age 16 years were higher for children exposed to hyperemesis gravidarum than unexposed children (47.6 vs 43.9 per 100 children). Relative to no exposure, hyperemesis gravidarum was associated with a 1.21 times greater risk of any hospitalization before 16 years (95% CI 1.17-1.26). Hyperemesis gravidarum was associated with hospitalization for neurologic (HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.32-1.71), developmental (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.29-1.76), digestive (HR 1.40, 95% CI 1.30-1.52), and allergic disorders (HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.24-1.56). When contrasted with preeclampsia, hyperemesis gravidarum was a stronger risk factor for these outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Maternal hyperemesis gravidarum is associated with an increased risk of childhood hospitalization, especially for neurologic, developmental, digestive, and atopic disorders. WHAT IS KNOWN • Hyperemesis gravidarum is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. • However, the effect of hyperemesis gravidarum on other childhood morbidity is unclear. WHAT IS NEW • In this longitudinal cohort study of 1.2 million children, maternal hyperemesis gravidarum was associated with a greater risk of hospitalization before age 16 years. • Exposure to hyperemesis gravidarum was associated with developmental, neurologic, atopic, and digestive morbidity in childhood.

Abstract
The microbiome plays a critical role in the process of conception and the outcomes of pregnancy. Disruptions in microbiome homeostasis in women of reproductive age can lead to various pregnancy complications, which significantly impact maternal and fetal health. Recent studies have associated the microbiome in the female reproductive tract (FRT) with assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes, and restoring microbiome balance has been shown to improve fertility in infertile couples. This review provides an overview of the role of the microbiome in female reproductive health, including its implications for pregnancy outcomes and ARTs. Additionally, recent advances in the use of microbial biomarkers as indicators of pregnancy disorders are summarized. A comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of the microbiome before and during pregnancy and its impact on reproductive health will greatly promote maternal and fetal health. Such knowledge can also contribute to the development of ARTs and microbiome-based interventions.

Abstract
Pregnancy alters many physiological systems, including the maternal gut microbiota. Diet is a key regulator of this system and can alter the host immune system to promote inflammation. Multiple perinatal disorders have been associated with inflammation, maternal metabolic alterations, and gut microbial dysbiosis, including gestational diabetes mellitus, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, and mood disorders. However, the effects of high-inflammatory diets on the gut microbiota during pregnancy have yet to be fully explored. We aimed to address this gap using a system-based approach to characterize associations among dietary inflammatory potential, a measure of diet quality, and the gut microbiome during pregnancy. Forty-seven pregnant persons were recruited prior to 16 weeks of gestation. Participants completed a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and provided fecal samples. Dietary inflammatory potential was assessed using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) from the FFQ data. Fecal samples were analyzed using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Differential taxon abundances with respect to the DII score were identified, and the microbial metabolic potential was predicted using PICRUSt2. Inflammatory diets were associated with decreased vitamin and mineral intake and a dysbiotic gut microbiota structure and predicted metabolism. Gut microbial compositional differences revealed a decrease in short-chain fatty acid producers such as Faecalibacterium, and an increase in predicted vitamin B12 synthesis, methylglyoxal detoxification, galactose metabolism, and multidrug efflux systems in pregnant individuals with increased DII scores. Dietary inflammatory potential was associated with a reduction in the consumption of vitamins and minerals and predicted gut microbiota metabolic dysregulation.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Previous research has reported differences in the gut microbiome associated with varying body compositions. More specifically, within populations of mothers, the focus has been on the impact of gestational weight gain. This is the first study to examine postpartum weight change and its association with changes in the gut microbiome, similarly, it is the first to use a Latina cohort to do so. The results support the idea that weight gain may be an important factor in reducing gut microbiome network connectivity, diversity, and changing abundances of specific microbial taxa, all measures thought to impact host health. These results suggest that weight gain dynamically alters mothers' gut microbial communities in the first 6 months postpartum, with comparatively little change in mothers who lost weight; further research is needed to examine the health consequences of such changes.

Abstract
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are biosynthesized via fermentation of polysaccharides by gastrointestinal microbiota and have been shown to have wide-reaching effects on almost all tissues, including the pancreatic islets. Historically, the effects of SCFAs have been attributed to their intracellular metabolism and function as energy sources, but the discovery of free fatty acid G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the 2000s suggested that many functional outcomes of SCFAs are receptor-mediated. The SCFA receptors FFA2/GPR43 and FFA3/GPR41 are expressed on β-cells, where they regulate glucose-dependent insulin secretion, making them attractive targets for treatment of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. Here, we provide an update on the current evidence regarding regulation of FFA2/FFA3 receptors by specific probiotic bacterial species within the gut microbiome that synthesize SCFAs. We also review the body of research regarding the FFA2- and FFA3 receptor-specific function of SCFAs on β-cells and discuss the somewhat controversial and opposing findings within these studies.

Abstract
Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a pathological state that represents a fetus's inability to achieve adequate growth during pregnancy. Several maternal, placental, and fetal factors are likely associated with FGR etiology. FGR is linked to severe fetal and neonatal complications, as well as adverse health consequences in adulthood. Numerous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated improved growth in FGR fetuses with promising treatment strategies such as maternal micronutrient, amino acid, and nitric oxide supplementation. Elevated inflammation in pregnant women diagnosed with FGR has been associated with an imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Gut microbiota dysbiosis may result in increased FGR-related inflammation. Probiotic treatment may relieve FGR-induced inflammation and improve fetal growth. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the gut microbiota and inflammatory profiles associated with FGR and explore the potential of probiotics in treating FGR.

Abstract
The microbiome has been proven to be associated with many diseases and has been used as a biomarker and target in disease prevention and intervention. Currently, the vital role of the microbiome in pregnant women and newborns is increasingly emphasised. In this review, we discuss the interplay of the microbiome and the corresponding immune mechanism between mothers and their offspring during the perinatal period. We aim to present a comprehensive picture of microbial transmission and potential immune imprinting before and after delivery. In addition, we discuss the possibility of in utero microbial colonisation during pregnancy, which has been highly debated in recent studies, and highlight the importance of the microbiome in infant development during the first 3 years of life. This holistic view of the role of the microbial interplay between mothers and infants will refine our current understanding of pregnancy complications as well as diseases in early life and will greatly facilitate the microbiome-based prenatal diagnosis and treatment of mother-infant-related diseases.

Abstract
According to current knowledge, a properly colonized human microbiota contributes to the proper functioning of the body. The composition of the natural flora changes depending on age, health, living conditions, and the use of antimicrobial agents: antibiotics, disinfectants, and some cosmetics. The human body is diversely populated with microorganisms and undergoes constant changes under the influence of various factors, and its proper composition is extremely important for the proper functioning of the body. Given the above, it was decided that we would review current scientific research that explains the cause–effect relationship between the composition of microorganisms populating the human body and health, focusing on women’s health. As a result, an overview paper was prepared based on 109 scientific sources from 2009–2022. Special attention was paid to the most recent scientific studies of the last five years, which account for more than 75% of the cited sources.

Abstract
The gestation period is critical for the health of the mother and fetus. Malnutrition or over nutrition during pregnancy may cause gestational diseases that can result in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can be used to re-establish new gut microbiota to treat a variety of diseases and construct a model to investigate the nutritional health during pregnancy. Therefore, this study investigated whether human-derived gut microbiota during pregnancy could colonize the intestines of mice. Moreover, we determined the time and method of intervention for FMT. Based on this information, a humanized mouse model of FMT was constructed to simulate the human intestinal microecology during pregnancy, and serve as a useful animal model for the study of nutritional health and disease during pregnancy. Germ-free (GF) and specific pathogen free (SPF) C57BL/6J mice were selected for humanized gestational FMT and the transplantation outcomes were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the gestational intestinal microbiota colonized the intestines of mice, allowing researchers to construct a humanized mouse model of gestational FMT. The main intestinal flora of the gestational period were transplanted into GF mice, with the gestational flora being similar to the flora of GF mice after transplantation. However, antibiotics could not eliminate the original microbial flora in SPF mice, and the flora was complex and variable after FMT with little increase in abundance. Background flora had a significant impact on the outcomes assessment. The results were better in GF mice than in SPF mice, and after microbiota transplantation, a superior effect was observed on day 21 compared to days 7 and 14.
