Abstract
Background & aims Habitual dietary pattern has been shown to be a major modulator of systemic inflammation and is considered a modifiable risk factor for cardio-metabolic diseases (CMDs) and mental health disorders. We examined whether dietary-inflammation is associated with the multimorbidity of CMDs and mental health disorders in urbanizing-villages in southern India. We hypothesized that the participants with higher dietary-inflammation would have a higher burden of multimorbidity. Materials & methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 5984 adults (53% male) participating in the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents' Study. We assessed dietary-inflammation using dietary inflammatory index (DII®) based on intake of 27 micro- and macro-nutrients which were measured using a validated food-frequency-questionnaires. The CMDs and mental health disorders were assessed using standardized clinical procedures and validated questionnaires. 'Multimorbidity' was defined as a co-existence of one or more CMDs (hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, angina and stroke) and one or more mental health disorders (depression and anxiety). The association of multimorbidity with dietary-inflammation was examined using robust Poisson regression. Results The prevalence of multimorbidity was 3.5% and ∼75% of participants were consuming a pro-inflammatory diet (DII >0.0). As compared to the 1st DII-quartile (least dietary-inflammatory group), the adjusted prevalence ratio (95% confidence interval) for the presence of multimorbidity was 1.46(0.87, 2.46) for 2nd, 1.75(1.05, 2.89) for 3rd, and 1.77(1.06, 2.96) for 4th DII-quartile (p-trend = 0.021). There was no evidence of an interaction between DII and sex on multimorbidity. Conclusions Dietary-inflammation had a positive linear association with the multimorbidity, which suggest that even modest reduction in dietary-inflammation may reduce the multimorbidity burden.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and vitamin D deficiency are becoming highly prevalent among general populations. Despite plausible biological mechanisms for the role of vitamin D in cardio-protection, a cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been established. The interest in vitamin D as a potential therapeutic target to attenuate cardiovascular risk has been raised. The question about the benefit of vitamin D supplementation for cardiovascular outcomes cannot be answered certainly for the moment. The association between hypovitaminosis D and CVD has been proven by some studies while other studies deny any such link. The present narrative review gives a comprehensive overview of studies on the potential impact of hypovitaminosis D on CVD. The potential role of vitamin D supplementation in the management of CVD is also evaluated. Particular emphasis is paid to those studies that achieve a high level of scientific evidence.

Abstract
Introduction: Vitamin D (vitD) deficiency may have importance in some diseases, but there is a lack of data in our country to clarify the current situation. Our aim was to examine the basic characteristics of patients' vitD status, and the ratio of vitD deficiency and its relation to certain diseases, assess seasonality and trends, and reveal the indirect impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on vitD3 supplementation at the patient population level. Methods: Anonymized data on 25(OH)D test results were obtained from the clinical data registry of a tertiary teaching hospital covering the period between 1 January 2015 and 30 June 2021. VitD consumption (pharmacy sale) data were retrieved from the database of the National Health Insurance Fund of Hungary in order to calculate the defined daily dose (DDD)/1,000 inhabitants/day. Descriptive statistics and odds ratios with their 95% confidence intervals were calculated. The two-sample t-test and F-test were used to analyze our patients' data. Significant differences were considered if p <0.05. Results: Altogether, 45,567 samples were investigated; the mean age was 49 ± 19.1 years and 68.4% of them were female subjects. Overall, 20% of all patients had hypovitaminosis D, and just over 7% of patients had vitD deficiency. Male subjects had higher odds for hypovitaminosis or vitD deficiency (65.4 ± 28.2 nmol/L vs. 68.4 ± 28.4 nmol/L; p <0.0001). The mean 25(OH)D concentration has changed during the year, reaching a peak in September and a minimum in February. Patients with diseases of the circulatory system, genitourinary system, certain conditions originating in the perinatal period, and "sine morbo" (i.e., without a disease; such as those aged over 45 years and female teenagers) had statistically higher odds for lower 25(OH)D concentrations (p <0.00001). VitD consumption showed seasonality, being higher in autumn and winter. A slight increase started in the season of 2017/18, and two huge peaks were detected at the beginning of 2020 and 2021 in association with the COVID-19 waves. Conclusion: Our data are the first to describe data concerning vitD in our region. It reinforces the notion of vitD3 supplementation for some risk groups and also in healthy individuals. To prevent the winter decline, vitD3 supplementation should be started in September. This and the results during the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the importance of health education encouraging vitamin D3 supplementation.

Abstract
Despite being close to equator and receiving sufficient sun rays, evidences revealed that Indians have severe deficiency of vitamin D (vit D) ranging from 41 to 100% in different geographical locations. Therefore, in this study levels of 25(OH)D (physiologically measurable form) along with other bone metabolism associated biochemical markers were determined in serum sample of 300 apparently healthy study subjects (rural) from Doiwala block of Dehradun district in the state of Uttarakhand. Demographic data was also obtained based on a structured questionnaire to establish an association between 25(OH)D levels and various dietary and socio-cultural factors. Results demonstrated that of all study subjects, 197 (65%) had 25(OH)D levels below < 12 ng/mL (deficient) and 65 (21%) had 25(OH)D levels between 12 and 20 ng/mL (insufficient) with all other markers falling within respectively established reference ranges. Further, in univariate analysis, gender, occupation (indoor and outdoor), education were independently associated with vitamin D status. Additionally, parathyroid hormone associated significantly with gender and occupation, while calcium associated significantly with gender, occupation and education. Lastly, regression analysis revealed that gender and occupation independently associated with vitamin D status of subjects. In conclusion, apparently healthy subjects showed considerable vitamin D deficiency thereby generating an urgent need for formulating and implementing better government policies for enrichment of vitamin D levels among rural adults of Uttarakhand in future. Abstract
Due to the lipophilic nature of vitamin D, overweight and obese patients have an increased risk of inadequate circulating 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations. Vitamin D deficiency has in turn several consequences especially among children and adolescents. Therefore, a few supplementation strategies of vitamin D for pediatric subjects with an excessive body weight have been proposed, but their efficacy remains controversial. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation in overweight and obese children and adolescents. Three databases (PubMed, Embase and Web of Science) were searched to collect randomized controlled trials on the effect of vitamin D supplementation in the pediatric overweight or obese population. Twenty-three studies were included in the systematic review. Results on modification of metabolic or cardiovascular outcomes were controversial. On the other hand, the meta-analysis showed a mean difference by 1.6ng/mL in subjects supplemented with vitamin D as compared to placebo. In conclusion, vitamin D supplementation slightly increases 25(OH)D levels in pediatric subjects with overweight and obesity. However, the effects on metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes remain controversial. New efforts should be devoted to promoting effective interventions to improve the health of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity.

Abstract
Different phenotypes of obesity are each related with different complications and comorbidities. We hypothesized that suboptimal vitamin D status is directly associated with an unhealthy metabolic status, especially if allied with obesity. This cross-sectional study was performed in the framework of the National Food and Nutrition Surveillance. Overall, 1098 men and women participated in this study. In addition to height and weight, serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and glycemic and lipidemic status were evaluated. Then participants were classified into 4 groups based on body mass index and lipidemic and glycemic profile status, as follows: hyperglycemic-dyslipidemic obese (HDO), hyperglycemic-dyslipidemic nonobese (HDNO), normoglycemic-normolipidemic obese (NNO), and normoglycemic-normolipidemic nonobese (NNNO). In this study, 31.6% of participants were classified as HDO, 7.5% as HDNO, 34.5% as NNO, and 26.4% as NNNO. The frequency of suboptimal vitamin D status was more prevalent in HDO (81.8%) than in other phenotypes (HDNO, 80%; NNO, 77.6%; NNNO, 73.8%; P = .015). In the multivariate model, suboptimal vitamin D status significantly increased the odds of being NNO (odds ratio [OR], 1.28; 95% CI, 0.84-1.95), HDNO (OR, 1.48; 95% CI, 0.77-2.83), and HDO (OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.11-2.7) compared with the NNNO group. Likewise, in multivariate model, per each unit (ng/mL) increment in 25(OH)D concentration, the odds of HDNO and HDO decreased significantly by 4% (OR, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.94-0.98) and 7% (OR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.92-0.95), respectively. The results of the study showed a significant relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and metabolic obesity phenotypes; these data confirm the association between suboptimal vitamin D status and metabolic complications, especially in obese individuals.

Abstract
Background: Childhood obesity is associated with cardiovascular-disease (CVD) risk factors, an unfavorable lipid profile and reduced levels of 25(OH)D. The aim of our study is to evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation may play a role in the assessment of the CVD risk factors in overweight/obese children and adolescents. Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study involving children (9−15 years of age) with a known diagnosis of overweight or obesity (BMI > 25) and decreased levels of 25(OH)D (<25 ng/mL), who underwent oral vitamin D supplementation (100,000 UI, one vial/month) for six months. The anthropometric parameters, 25(OH)D, serum lipids and ALT levels were measured at the beginning (T0) and after 6 months (T1). Results: Of the 58 patients recruited, 45 had an increase in the serum 25(OH)D levels after supplementation. Vitamin D supplementation was associated with a decrease in the serum levels of the total cholesterol (p = 0.009), LDL-C (p = 0.005) and ALT (p = 0.005), and an increase in HDL-C (p = 0.03). These results were confirmed when the correction for the body mass index (BMI) was applied. Conclusions: The favorable effect of vitamin D supplementation on the total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and ALT could transform these values into modifiable risk factors starting in early childhood, with beneficial effects on long-term health.

Abstract
In this study, we conducted a systematic literature review of the various micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) that affect children in India and an examination of whether there is a geographic basis for MNDs. MNDs are a common problem in the developing world, in particular, among children in South Asia. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund, millions of children suffer from stunted growth, cognitive delays, weakened immunity, and diseases because of MNDs. These physical ailments have several economic, social, and public health implications, and they can severely hamper a country’s growth. This study aims to clarify existing data on this topic and highlight the disparities between children living in urban and rural areas in India. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines were followed to conduct this systematic literature review of a total of five studies. Study quality was assessed using appropriate checklists, and the studies strengthened the hypothesis that MNDs are common among children in India. Because the selected studies were heterogeneous, no statistical conclusions are drawn here. However, a central premise is that MNDs in children are prevalent in India and are related to poverty. No link between geographic location and MNDs is established; rather, recommendations are made for further research on the topic.

Abstract
Background Studies have linked vitamin D to risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Obesity is a potential confounder in these studies. This study examined the relationship of 25 (OH) cholecalciferol (25[OH] D3) with insulin resistance, blood glucose, and lipid profile in lean male adults. Method We enrolled two hundred and thirty four military recruits before beginning of military training. Demographic and anthropometric data were collected from them. The participants underwent body mass composition analysis by dual energy X ray absorptiometry. Fasting samples were collected for measurement of blood glucose, lipid profile, 25(OH) D3, serum parathormone (PTH) and insulin. Results Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency was found in 47.7% (107/224) and 31.6% (71/224) of participants, respectively. Using Pearson's correlation coefficient 25(OH) cholecalciferol and fasting blood glucose (FBG) were inversely correlated (p = 0.023). However, similar relation was not found between 25(OH) D3 and total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance and levels of PTH. On body composition analysis, there was no correlation of 25(OH) cholecalciferol with body mass index or fat mass index. Conclusion This study showed that in lean young male population, 25(OH) cholecalciferol and FBG are inversely correlated but no association of 25(OH) D3 with other cardiometabolic risk factors could be demonstrated.

Abstract
Background Lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is associated with greater adiposity and adverse cardiometabolic risk profile. The evidence is inconsistent among South Asian Indians. We aimed to examine associations between 25(OH)D and cardiovascular (CVD) risk markers in a rural and urban cohort from South India. Subjects/Methods In this cross sectional study, 373 individuals (men, n = 205) underwent detailed CVD risk marker assessment including anthropometry [body mass index (BMI), waist, (WC) and hip circumferences (HC)], body composition analysis using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), blood pressure and biochemical analysis (glucose, insulin and lipids). The distribution of CVD risk factors were compared across serum 25(OH)D levels, stratified as deficiency (<20 ng/ml), insufficiency (20 to 29 ng/ml) and normal (≥30 ng/ml) levels. Multiple regression analysis, adjusting for potential confounders, was used to study associations of 25(OH)D with adiposity and cardiometabolic traits. Results The mean and standard deviation (SD) of age, BMI and 25(OH)D levels were 41.4 (1.1) years, 25.5 (4.8) kg/m2 and 23.4 (10.4) ng/ml respectively. The prevalence of 25(OH)D deficiency was 39.9% in this cohort. Individuals in the 25(OH)D deficiency category had significantly higher mean (SD) BMI [26.6 (5.1) kg/m2], waist circumference [89.9 (12.5) cm] and total fat mass [20.6 (7.9) kg] compared with the Vitamin D sufficient group [BMI: 24.0 (4.4); WC 84.7 (12.0); total fat mass: 15.2 (6.8)]. Significantly inverse associations were observed with DXA measured total and regional fat depots with 25(OH)D levels, while anthropometric indices of adiposity showed significant inverse association only in women. After adjusting for total fat mass, no significant associations were observed between 25(OH)D and the cardiometabolic traits. Conclusions Our results confirm that lower 25(OH)D is independently associated with both total and regional adiposity, but not with cardiometabolic traits, in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Air pollution is a leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies mostly relied on concentrations at residence, which might not represent personal exposure. Personal air pollution exposure has a greater variability compared with levels of ambient air pollution, facilitating evaluation of exposure-response functions and vascular pathophysiology. We aimed to evaluate the association between predicted annual personal exposure to PM2.5 and black carbon (BC) and three vascular damage markers in peri-urban South India. METHODS We analyzed the third wave of the APCAPS cohort (2010-2012), which recruited participants from 28 villages. We used predicted personal exposure to PM2.5 and BC derived from 610 participant-days of 24 h average gravimetric PM2.5 and BC measurements and predictors related to usual time-activity. Outcomes included carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) and augmentation index (AIx). We fit linear mixed models, adjusting for potential confounders and accounting for the clustered data structure. We evaluated nonlinear associations using generalized additive mixed models. RESULTS Of the 3017 participants (mean age 38 years), 1453 (48%) were women. The average PM2.5 exposure was 51 µg/m3 (range 13-85) for men, and 61 µg/m3 (range 40-120) for women, while the average BC was 4 µg/m3 (range 3-7) for men and 8 µg/m3 (range 3-22) for women. A 10 μg/m3 increase of PM2.5 was positively associated with CIMT (0.026 mm, 95% CI 0.014, 0.037), cf-PWV (0.069 m/s, 95% CI 0.008, 0.131) and AIx (0.8%, 95% CI 0.3, 1.3) among men. The exposure-response function for PM2.5 and AIx among men showed non-linearity, particularly within the exposure range dominated by tobacco smoking and occupational exposures. Both PM2.5 and BC were positively associated with AIx among women (0.6%, 95% CI 0.2, 1.0, per 10 μg/m3 PM2.5; 0.5%, 95% CI 0.1, 0.8, per 2 μg/m3 BC). CONCLUSIONS Personal exposure to particulate matter was associated with vascular damage in a peri-urban population in South India. Personal exposure to particulate matter appears to have gender-specific effects on the type of vascular damage, potentially reflecting differences in sources of personal exposure by gender.

Abstract
Vitamin D (25OHD) pleiotropic effects are widely recognized and studied. Recently, vitamin D cardiovascular effects are gaining interest, especially in children, although the studies present conflicting data. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated that cardiovascular risk markers, such as lipid parameters, inflammation markers, blood pressure, and arterial stiffness, are unaffected by vitamin D supplementation. By contrast, other studies show that low vitamin D levels are associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality, and support that increased risk of these diseases occurs primarily in people with vitamin D deficiency. An update on these points in pediatric patients is certainly of interest to focus on possible benefits of its supplementation.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Different metabolic phenotypes of obesity are related to cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents. Vitamin D, as one important factor, could be related to different subgroups of metabolic obesity and might affect metabolic disorders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration and subsets of metabolic phenotypes of obesity in children and adolescents. Methods: This nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in the framework of the fifth survey of a national surveillance program, the CASPIAN study. Overall, 2,594 students aged 7-18 years were assessed for 25-hydroxyvitamin D status. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) was defined according to the ATP III criteria modified for the pediatric age group. Participants were classified into four metabolic phenotypes of obesity according to categories of the BMI and metabolic status: "metabolically healthy obese" (MHO), "metabolically non-healthy non-obese" (MNHNO), "metabolically non-healthy obese" (MNHO), and "metabolically healthy non-obese" (MHNO). Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed for evaluating the association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D status with different metabolic phenotypes of obesity. Results: In this study, 85.2% of participants were classified as MHNO, 11.0 % as MHO, 2.5% as MNHNO, and 1.3% as MNHO. The frequency of hypovitaminosis D was more prevalent in MNHO (85.3%) than in other phenotypes (MHNO: 70%; MHO: 76.5%; MNHNO: 78.1%, respectively; p < 0.05). In the multivariate model, hypovitaminosis D significantly increased the odds of being MHO (OR: 1.46; 95% CI: 1.07-1.77) and MNHO (OR: 2.89; 1.05-8.31) compared to the healthy group. Likewise, in multivariate model, per each unit (ng/mL) increment in 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration, the odds of MNHNO and MNHO decreased significantly by 7% (OR: 0.93; 0.91-0.96) and 6% (OR: 0.94; 0.91-0.98) respectively. Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis that 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration is associated with metabolic obesity phenotypes. Longitudinal studies are necessary to assess the clinical impacts of this finding.

Abstract
As the prevalence of obesity appears to be increasing in Australia's youth the overall objective of this study was to examine serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations in a cohort of 8-year-olds (n=249) followed up at age 15 (n=162) and explore associations between 25OHD with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in these populations. This was done in two stages: the first, two cross-sectional analyses (at ages 8 and 15); and the second, a prospective analysis from age 8 to 15. At both ages data on 25OHD, blood lipids, and anthropometry were measured. Date of blood draw was used as a surrogate of sunlight exposure. Results were then analysed by multivariate linear analyses taking into account interaction and confounding. Mean 25OHD concentrations decreased from 94±25nmol/L to 63±16nmol/L between age 8 and 15 years (p<0.001). On cross-sectional analysis of 8year olds, no CVD risk factor was found to be significantly associated with 25OHD concentrations. On cross-sectional analysis of 15year olds lower 25OHD levels were significantly associated with higher body fat (adjusted β=-0.24, p=0.003). Prospectively, lower 25OHD levels in 8-year-old boys, but not girls, were significantly associated with higher blood total cholesterol (adjusted β=-0.28, p=0.040) and triglyceride levels (adjusted β=-0.33, p=0.030) at age 15. The limitation of these data is the relatively small sample sizes, however these results suggest that low 25OHD in childhood needs to be further investigated in larger cohort studies as there may be later cardiovascular consequences in adolescence.

Abstract
Sunlight is regarded among greatest gifts that are presented in abundance to the human beings from the God. Sunlight is also a rich source of Vitamin D (Vit D) that prevents us from numerous ailments such as autoimmune disorders, various types of cancer, and the above all cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Evident from recent research that Vit D deficiency may be the cause for hypertension, cardiac autonomic imbalance, vascular endothelial dysfunction, metabolic syndrome, and even diabetes. Concurrently, many studies present research outcomes that are contradictory to earlier results and also raised a concern not for general public but also among their treating physicians. The sole focus of this review is to systematically present the available research data and critically evaluate the link between Vit D deficiency and development of risk factors for CVD.

Abstract
Background: Serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels are inversely associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, mediated in part by independent positive relationships with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) and inverse relationships with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), triglyceride, and homocysteine. Aims: In this study, we assessed relationships between fasting serum vitamin D and lipids, lipoprotein cholesterols, and homocysteine. Materials and Methods: We studied 1534 patients sequentially referred to our center from 2007 to 2016. Fasting serum total 25(OH) vitamin D, plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, HDLC, LDLC, and homocysteine were measured. Stepwise regression models were used with total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDLC, LDLC, and homocysteine as dependent variables and explanatory variables age, race, gender, body mass index (BMI), and serum vitamin D levels. Relationships between quintiles of serum vitamin D and triglycerides, HDLC, LDLC, and homocysteine were assessed after covariance adjusting for age, race, gender, and BMI. Results: Fasting serum vitamin D was positively correlated with age, HDLC, and White race, and was inversely correlated with BMI, total and LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and fasting serum homocysteine (P ≤ 0.0001 for all). Serum vitamin D was a significant independent inverse explanatory variable for total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol, and accounted for the largest amount of variance in serum total cholesterol (partial R2 =3.6%), triglyceride (partial R2 =3.1%), and LDLC (partial R2 =2.9%) (P < 0.0001 for all). Serum vitamin D was a significant positive explanatory variable for HDLC (partial R2 = 1.4%, P < 0.0001), and a significant inverse explanatory variable for homocysteine (partial R2 = 6.0–12.6%). Conclusions: In hyperlipidemic patients, serum vitamin D was a significant independent inverse determinant of total cholesterol, LDLC, triglyceride, and homocysteine, and a significant independent positive determinant of HDLC. Thus, serum vitamin D might be protective against CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies support a possible association between decreased vitamin D levels and risk of coronary artery disease (CAD); however, it remains unclear whether this relationship is causal. We aimed to evaluate whether genetically lowered vitamin D levels influence the risk of CAD using a Mendelian randomization approach. METHODS AND RESULTS In this 2-stage Mendelian randomization study, we first identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels in the SUNLIGHT consortium (n=33 996), then tested them for possible violation of Mendelian randomization assumptions. A count of risk alleles was tested for association with 25OHD levels in a separate cohort (n=2347). Alleles were weighted by their relative effect on 25OHD and tested for their combined effect on CAD in the Coronary Artery Disease Genome-Wide Replication and Meta-Analysis (CARDIoGRAM) study (22 233 cases/64 762 controls). Four single-nucleotide polymorphisms were identified to be associated with 25OHD levels, all in or near genes implicated in 25OHD synthesis, transport or metabolism. A count of these risk alleles was strongly associated with 25OHD (n=2347, F-test statistic=49.7, P=2×10(-12)). None of the single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with 25OHD levels were associated with CAD (all P values >0.6). The Mendelian randomization odds ratio (OR) for CAD was 0.99 (95% confidence interval, 0.84-1.17; P=0.93; I(2)=0) per SD decrease in log-transformed 25OHD levels. These results persisted after sensitivity analyses for population stratification and pleiotropy. CONCLUSIONS Genetically lowered 25OHD levels were not associated with increased risk of CAD in a large, well-powered study, suggesting that previous associations between circulating 25OHD levels and CAD are possibly confounded or due to reverse causation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both childhood obesity and vitamin D deficiency are common in the Middle East. This study aims to determine whether the associations of vitamin D status to traditional anthropometric parameters hold true for nonconventional measures of adiposity, such as body adiposity index (BAI), a measure of body fat percentage, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and lipid indices, in apparently healthy Arab children. METHODS A total of 4183 apparently healthy Saudi school students (1906 boys; 2277 girls) aged 12 to 17 years were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometrics were obtained. Fasting blood glucose and lipids were measured routinely. Serum 25(OH)D was measured using chemiluminescence. RESULTS In all subjects, age, BAI, waist-to-hip ratio, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) accounted for 4% of the variance in serum 25(OH)D (P < .001). All adiposity indices were inversely associated with 25(OH)D, with WHtR being the most inferior in terms of strength of association. Vitamin D deficiency significantly increased risk for low HDL-C in all subjects (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.70 [1.24-2.3]; P < .001). CONCLUSION BAI is significantly associated with 25(OH)D levels in Arab children. WHtR is inferior than other anthropometric measures of obesity regarding the strength of association with 25(OH)D. Risk for or low HDL-C is significantly increased with vitamin D deficiency. Interventional studies may determine the potential cardioprotective effects of vitamin D correction in this population.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis causes significant morbidity and mortality. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) predicts future cardiovascular and ischaemic stroke incidence. CIMT, a measure of atherosclerotic disease, can be reliably determined in vivo by carotid ultrasound. In this review, we determined that CIMT is associated with traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as age, sex, race, smoking, alcohol consumption, habitual endurance exercise, blood pressure, dyslipidemia, dietary patterns, risk-lowering drug therapy, glycemia, hyperuricemia, obesity-related anthropometric parameters, obesity and obesity-related diseases. We also found that CIMT is associated with novel risk factors, including heredity, certain genotypic indices, anthropometric cardiovascular parameters, rheumatoid arthritis, immunological diseases, inflammatory cytokines, lipid peroxidation, anthropometric hemocyte parameters, infectious diseases, vitamin D, matrix metalloproteinases, and other novel factors and diseases. However, the conclusions are inconsonant; the underlying causes of these associations remain to be further explored.
