Abstract
Recent experimental and epidemiological studies underscore the vital interaction between the intestinal microbiota and the lungs, an interplay known as the "gut-lung axis". The significance of this axis has been further illuminated following the identification of intestinal microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), as key mediators in setting the tone of the immune system. Through the gut-lung axis, the gut microbiota and its metabolites, or allergens, are directly or indirectly involved in the immunomodulation of pulmonary diseases, thereby increasing susceptibility to allergic airway diseases such as asthma. Asthma is a complex outcome of the interplay between environmental factors and genetic predispositions. The concept of the gut-lung axis may offer new targets for the prevention and treatment of asthma. This review outlines the relationships between asthma and the respiratory microbiome, gut microbiome, and environmental microbiome. It also discusses the current advancements and applications of microbiomics, offering novel perspectives and strategies for the clinical management of chronic respiratory diseases like asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Time-varying exposures like pet ownership pose challenges for identifying critical windows due to multicollinearity when modeled simultaneously. The Distributed Lag Model (DLM) estimates critical windows for time-varying exposures, which are mainly continuous variables. However, applying complex functions such as high-order splines and nonlinear functions within DLMs may not be suitable for situations with limited time points or binary exposure, such as in questionnaire surveys. OBJECTIVES (1) We examined the estimation performance of a simple DLM with fractional polynomial function for time-varying binary exposures through simulation experiments. (2) We evaluated the impact of pet ownership on childhood wheezing onset and estimate critical windows. METHODS (1) We compared logistic regression including time-varying exposure in separate models, in one model simultaneously, and using DLM. For evaluation, we employed bias, empirical standard error (EmpSE), and mean squared error (MSE). (2) The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS) is a prospective birth cohort study of approximately 100,000 parent-child pairs, registered across Japan from 2011 to 2014. We applied DLM to the JECS data up to age 3. The estimated odds ratios (OR) were considered to be within critical windows when they were significant at the 5% level. RESULTS (1) DLM and the separate model exhibited lower bias compared to the simultaneously model. Additionally, both DLM and the simultaneously model demonstrated lower EmpSEs than the separate model. In all scenarios, DLM had lower MSEs than the other methods. Specifically, where critical windows is clearly present and exposure correlation is high, DLM showed MSEs about 1/2 to 1/200 of those of other models. (2) Application of DLM to the JECS data showed that, unlike other models, a significant exposure effect was observed only between the ages of 0 and 6 months. During that periods, the highest ORs were 1.07 (95% confidence interval, 1.01 to 1.14) , observed between the ages of 2 and 5 months. CONCLUSIONS (1) A simple DLM improves the accuracy of exposure effect and critical windows estimation. (2) 0-6 months may be the critical windows for the effect of pet ownership on the wheezing onset at 3 years.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a public health concern affecting millions of productive age groups. Several studies were conducted on the determinants of asthma in children. However, little is known about the determinants of asthma among adults in Ethiopia. Understanding the determinants of asthma among adults can help reduce its burden. This study was aimed at identifying determinant factors for developing asthma among adults in Tigray hospitals. Methods A facility-based, unmatched case-control study design was conducted from January 1 to April 26, 2019. A total of 698 participants (228 cases and 470 controls) completed their guided interviews using structured and pretested questionnaires by trained data collectors. A modified standard questionnaire from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey II (ECRHS II) was used to collect the data. The case definition was patients having asthma, and the control definition was patients without asthma. Data were entered and cleaned using Epi Data Manager Version 3.1 software and imported to statistical packages for social sciences Version 25 software for analysis. To identify asthma determinants, bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were fitted. Results The response rate for both cases and controls was 95.9%. The odds of developing asthma was nearly twice higher among those who resided in urban (AOR = 1.68; 95% CI [1.13-2.50]), more than twice higher among those who have income less than 1000 ETB (AOR = 2.3; 95% CI [1.17-4.56]), twice higher among those who had history of skin allergy (AOR = 2.09; 95% CI [1.14-3.86]), over four times higher among those with family history of asthma (AOR = 4.26; 95% CI [2.63-6.91]), three times higher among those having house dust or smoke exposure (AOR = 3.01; 95% CI [1.96-4.64]), over five times higher among those lifetime firewood users (AOR = 5.39; 95% CI [3.34-8.72]), door opening while cooking (AOR = 0.35; 95% CI [0.26-0.55]), nearly two times higher among those having house dampness (AOR = 1.98; 95% CI [1.069-3.68]), over seven times higher among pet owners (AOR = 7.46; 95% CI [4.04-13] and almost twice higher among those who were physically inactive (AOR = 1.75; 95% CI [1.11-2.85]). Conclusion Asthma has been associated with urbanization, low income, a history of allergic diseases, indoor smoke or dust, firewood use, pet ownership, and a sedentary lifestyle. The community should be informed about the known risks and implement preventive steps like opening a door while cooking to lower the risk of asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between current pet keeping and allergic diseases, including bronchial asthma in adolescents, is controversial. This study was conducted to evaluate these associations among children aged 13-14 years in Yazd. METHODS This study is part of a multicenter cross-sectional study of the Global Asthma Network (GAN) in Yazd, Iran, in 2020, in which 5141adolescents enrolled. Information on respiratory symptoms and pet-keeping (dog/cat/birds) was obtained by a questionnaire derived from the GAN standard questionnaire. RESULTS Of 5141 participants who completed the study, 1800 (35%) children kept pets during the last year. Birds were the most common pet kept by adolescents (88%). Severe asthma was more common in bird and cat keepers (P=0.003 and P=0.034, respectively) than dog keepers. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant association between study-defined current asthma and cat keeping, but not bird or dog ownership (P=0.02). Moreover, we found that current any pet-keeping (birds, cats, dogs) was associated with a higher prevalence of asthma-related symptoms, including wheezing, night dry cough, and exercise-induced wheezing in the past year (P=0.002, P=0.000 and P=0.000 respectively). CONCLUSION Current any pet-keeping is associated with asthma-related symptoms. Additionally, cat keeping had a significant association with study-defined current asthma. The current keeping of birds, as the most common pet in our area, or cat keeping increases the risk of severe asthma in adolescents. Therefore, as an important health tip, this needs to be reminded to families by health care providers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The fetal immune system and consequent elevated risk of asthma in childhood may be impacted by maternal anxiety during pregnancy. Limited studies have evaluated whether there was a sensitive period and cumulative effect of the relationship between prenatal anxiety and children's asthma. METHODS 3131 mother-child pairs made up the study's sample from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort Study in China. Maternal anxiety status was repeated three times using the pregnancy-related anxiety questionnaire in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. Diagnostic information on asthma was collected three times at 24, 36, and 48 months of age. RESULTS After adjusting for confounders, children born to mothers with anxiety in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy all had an elevated risk of total asthma from 12 to 48 months of age. After further adjusting prenatal anxiety in the other trimesters, no association was observed between prenatal anxiety in any trimester and preschoolers' asthma. Children of mothers with persistently high anxiety score trajectory during pregnancy had an elevated risk of total asthma and high prevalence trajectory of asthma. Cumulative effects analysis showed that the more frequent the mother's anxiety, the higher the risk of her offspring developing a high prevalence trajectory of asthma from 12 to 48 months of age. The results of the subgroup analysis by age showed similar associations overall. CONCLUSIONS Maternal antenatal anxiety was associated with an elevated risk of preschool children's asthma, and a possible cumulative effect was observed. Maternal mental health conditions during pregnancy should receive constant attention throughout pregnancy, not just during one period.

Abstract
This investigation explored the association between indoor environmental factors and childhood asthma in Yancheng, China. Asthma case (201 children with recurrent asthma) and control cohorts (242 healthy subjects) were recruited from a Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) Hospital in Yancheng city, based on the results of an ISAAC questionnaire. Questionnaires regarding environmental risk factors were completed by the child's primary caregivers. To compare data on environmental VOCs and formaldehyde contents between asthma and control cohorts, we passively conducted a 10-day indoor and outdoor sampling. Breastfeeding was a major protective indoor environmental factor for recurrent asthma (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.368, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.216-0.627). Our analysis revealed that childhood recurrent asthma was intricately linked to a family history of asthma. Recurrent asthma was also associated with passive smoking [aOR2.115 (95%-CI 1.275-3.508)]. Analogous correlations were observed between household renovation or new furniture introduction and recurrent asthma [aOR3.129(95%-CI1.542-6.347)]. Benzene and formaldehyde were present in all examined homes. Enhanced benzene and formaldehyde concentrations were strongly evident among asthma versus control cohorts, and they were strongly correlated with augmented recurrent asthma risk. Home environment heavily regulates incidences of childhood recurrent asthma. Hence, actions against the indoor environmental risk factors described in this study may assist in the prevention of recurrent asthma among children.

Abstract
Background Allergic rhinitis is a significant public health concern worldwide, affecting both developed and developing countries, with prevalence rates ranging between 10% and 30% in adults and over 40% in children. However, there are limited studies on allergic rhinitis prevalence in Saudi Arabia. Objective To explore allergic rhinitis among schoolchildren in Saudi Arabia in terms of prevalence, severity, and risk factors. Methods This study was conducted between March and April 2019, covering 20 regions. The study employed a multistage, stratified cluster sampling approach and selected 137 primary and 140 intermediate schools. The research utilized the methodology and questionnaires recommended by the Global Asthma Network (GAN). Data analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 23). Results The completed questionnaires in the analysis comprised 3614 children aged 6-7 years old and 4068 adolescents aged 13-14 years old. The study found that 5.6% of children and 14.0% of adolescents reported current rhinoconjunctivitis, with 0.5% of children and 1.3% of adolescents experiencing severe symptoms. Several risk factors were significantly associated with rhinoconjunctivitis. In children 6-7 years old, eating cooked vegetables was inversely associated with rhinoconjunctivitis, while prematurity, wheezing in infancy, and a history of pneumonia were positively associated with the condition. In adolescents, vigorous physical activity, current exposure to cats, and frequent use of paracetamol were found to be the main risk factors associated with rhinoconjunctivitis, while high consumption of pulses and eggs was found to have a protective effect. Conclusion In Saudi Arabia, the prevalence of rhinoconjunctivitis in children is lower than average globally, but among adolescents, it is within the global average range. However, the prevalence of severe rhinoconjunctivitis among adolescents is twice the global average. Further research is required to examine regional differences, track trends over time, and explore risk factors that contribute to allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
The current literature shows mixed results relating to the significance of environmental exposure, such as owning a pet, and the development of atopy in children. Our review aimed to collect the most recent evidence on the association between early-life cat and dog ownership and the development of allergy and asthma. A comprehensive literature review was performed using PubMed and Scopus. The search included the main keywords of our PICO: (((early exposure) AND (children) AND (allergy)) OR (asthma)) AND (dog) OR (cat). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), case-control studies, clinical trials, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews of children within the last five years (2018-2023) were searched and included. During the search process, 52 articles from PubMed and 43 from Scopus were found. A total of 17 articles were deemed to be suitable and included. Fairly consistent results regarding early exposure to pets, in particular dogs, and the prevention of food allergies have been described. Furthermore, there seems to be a protective effect against allergy and asthma in relation to the number of pets owned. The likelihood of a child developing allergy and asthma seems to be influenced by various factors, including the child's genetic background and early exposure to different environmental factors, including allergens that may interact with the gut microbiota and immune system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the 5 years that have passed since the publication of the 2018 International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Allergic Rhinitis (ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2018), the literature has expanded substantially. The ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 update presents 144 individual topics on allergic rhinitis (AR), expanded by over 40 topics from the 2018 document. Originally presented topics from 2018 have also been reviewed and updated. The executive summary highlights key evidence-based findings and recommendation from the full document. METHODS ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 employed established evidence-based review with recommendation (EBRR) methodology to individually evaluate each topic. Stepwise iterative peer review and consensus was performed for each topic. The final document was then collated and includes the results of this work. RESULTS ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 includes 10 major content areas and 144 individual topics related to AR. For a substantial proportion of topics included, an aggregate grade of evidence is presented, which is determined by collating the levels of evidence for each available study identified in the literature. For topics in which a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention is considered, a recommendation summary is presented, which considers the aggregate grade of evidence, benefit, harm, and cost. CONCLUSION The ICAR-Allergic Rhinitis 2023 update provides a comprehensive evaluation of AR and the currently available evidence. It is this evidence that contributes to our current knowledge base and recommendations for patient evaluation and treatment.

Abstract
An updated edition of the International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Allergic Rhinitis (ICAR:AR) has recently been published. This consensus document, which included the participation of 87 primary authors and 40 additional consultant authors, who critically appraised evidence on 144 individual topics concerning allergic rhinitis, provides guidance for health care providers using the evidence-based review with recommendations (EBRR) methodology. This synopsis highlights topical areas including pathophysiology, epidemiology, disease burden, risk and protective factors, evaluation and diagnosis, aeroallergen avoidance and environmental controls, single and combination pharmacotherapy options, allergen immunotherapy (subcutaneous, sublingual, rush, cluster), pediatric considerations, alternative and emerging therapies, and unmet needs. Based on the EBRR methodology, ICAR:AR includes strong recommendations for the treatment of allergic rhinitis: (1) for the use of newer generation antihistamines compared with first-generation alternatives, intranasal corticosteroid, intranasal saline, combination therapy with intranasal corticosteroid plus intranasal antihistamine for patients not responding to monotherapy, and subcutaneous immunotherapy and sublingual tablet immunotherapy in properly selected patients; (2) against the use of oral decongestant monotherapy and routine use of oral corticosteroids.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the relationship between polymorphisms of P2X3, P2X7 genes and environment interaction with susceptibility of childhood asthma. METHODS We conducted a matched case-control study with 170 cases and 175 healthy controls. The rs10896611, rs2276038, rs3781899 in P2X3 and rs1718119, rs3751143 in P2X7 polymorphisms were genotyped using the technique of an improved multiplex ligation detection reaction. Gene-gene, gene-environment and haplotype-environment interactions were tested using the generalized multi-factor dimensionality reduction method. RESULTS There were no differences between cases and controls in allele or genotype frequencies of P2X3 and P2X7. The C/C, G/C genotypes of rs10896611, and C/C, C/T genotypes of rs2276038 and G/G, G/A genotypes of rs3781899 were associated with asthmatic cough (p > 0.05). The haplotype GCT of P2X3 reduced the risk of asthma (OR = 0.48, p = 0.048), and the haplotypes AGT (OR = 0.45, p = 0.001) and GCC (OR = 2.16, p = 0.002) were associated with asthmatic cough. The haplotype AA of P2X7 increased risk of asthma severity (p < 0.05). The three-locus model indicated a potential haplotype-environment interaction in GCT, ETS, and pet (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The rs10896611, rs2276038 and rs3781899 of P2X3 minor alleles increased the risk of asthmatic cough. Haplotype GCT of P2X3 was a protective factor for asthma, the haplotype AGT was a protective factor and GCC was a risk factor for asthma with cough. In addition, the interactions of haplotype GCT of P2X3, ETS and pet may increase an individual's susceptibility to asthma.

Abstract
Personal wellbeing is greatly influenced by our childhood and adolescence, and the relationships formed during those phases of our development. The human-dog bond represents a significant relationship that started thousands of years ago. There is a higher prevalence of dog ownership around the world, especially in households including children. This has resulted in a growing number of researchers studying our interactions with dogs and an expanding evidence base from the exploration of child-dog interactions. We review the potential effects of child-dog interactions on the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of both species. A search of the SCOPUS database identified documents published between January 1980 and April 2022. Filtering for key inclusion criteria, duplicate removals, and inspecting the references of these documents for additional sources, we reviewed a total of 393 documents, 88% of which were scientific articles. We were able to define the numerous ways in which children and dogs interact, be it neutral (e.g., sharing a common area), positive (e.g., petting), or negative (e.g., biting). Then, we found evidence for an association between childhood interaction with dogs and an array of benefits such as increased physical activities, a reduction of stress, and the development of empathy. Nonetheless, several detrimental outcomes have also been identified for both humans and dogs. Children are the most at-risk population regarding dog bites and dog-borne zoonoses, which may lead to injuries/illness, a subsequent fear of dogs, or even death. Moreover, pet bereavement is generally inevitable when living with a canine companion and should not be trivialized. With a canine focus, children sometimes take part in caretaking behaviors toward them, such as feeding or going for walks. These represent opportunities for dogs to relieve themselves outside, but also to exercise and socialize. By contrast, a lack of physical activity can lead to the onset of obesity in both dogs and children. Dogs may present greater levels of stress when in the presence of children. Finally, the welfare of assistance, therapy, and free-roaming dogs who may interact with children remains underexplored. Overall, it appears that the benefits of child-dog interactions outweigh the risks for children but not for dogs; determination of the effects on both species, positive as well as negative, still requires further development. We call for longitudinal studies and cross-cultural research in the future to better understand the impact of child-dog interactions. Our review is important for people in and outside of the scientific community, to pediatricians, veterinarians, and current or future dog owners seeking to extend their knowledge, and to inform future research of scientists studying dogs and human-animal interactions.

Abstract
Breastmilk contains many important nutrients, anti-inflammatory agents, and immunomodulators. It is the preferred nutrition source for infants. However, the association of the duration of exclusive breastmilk feeding (BMF) with asthma development is unclear. Data on children from the United States who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2014 were obtained. We examined the association between the duration of exclusive BMF and asthma in 6000 children (3 to 6 years old). After calculating the duration of exclusive breastfeeding according to answers to NHANES questionnaires, the estimated duration of exclusive BMF was divided into five categories: never breastfed or BMF for 0 to 2 months after birth; BMF for 2 to 4 months after birth; BMF for 4 to 6 months after birth; and BMF for ≥6 months after birth. The overall prevalence of asthma in children aged 3 to 6 years was approximately 13.9%. The risk of asthma was lower in children with an exclusive BMF duration of 4 to 6 months (aOR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.48–0.98), after adjustment for potentially confounding factors. Subgroup analysis revealed that children of younger ages (3 to 4 years old) benefited most from the protective effects of exclusive BMF for 4 to 6 months (aOR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.27, 0.8). We found that exclusive BMF, especially BMF for 4 to 6 months, is associated with a decreased risk of asthma in preschool-age children. The protective effect appeared to be diminished in older children. The potential mechanism needs further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The relationship between pet ownership and childhood asthma remains controversial. In recent years, there have been increasing studies with large sample size. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between pet ownership and childhood asthma. METHOD Relevant research was retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Web of science. The retrieval was as of October 1, 2021. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Stata 15.0 was used to conduct the meta-analysis. RESULTS A total of 60 studies with large sample size published between 1995 and 2021 were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, which included 18 cohort studies and 42 case-control studies covering 27 countries and 1,871,295 children. As shown by meta-analysis results, cat ownership (OR = 1.18, 95%CI: 1.05∼1.33) and dog ownership (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 1.0 0∼1.24) have a significant bearing on the occurrence of childhood asthma. Pet ownership was also positively correlated with the occurrence of severe childhood asthma (OR = 1.15, 95%CI: 1.11∼1.20). CONCLUSION Pet ownership, especially cats and dogs, is associated with the occurrence of asthma in children.

Abstract
Background and objective An increasing trend of asthma prevalence was observed in Asia; however, contributions of environmental and host-related risk factors to the development of this disease remain uncertain. This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis for asthma-associated risk factors reported in Asia. Methods We systematically searched three public databases (Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus) in Feb 2021. We only included articles that reported environmental and host-related risk factors associated with asthma in the Asian population. Random-effect meta-analyses were conducted for frequently reported asthma-associated risk factors to provide an overall risk estimate of asthma development. Results Of 4030 records obtained from public databases, 289 articles were selected for review. The most frequently reported asthma-associated risk factor was the family history of allergy-related conditions. The random-effect asthma risk estimates (pooled odds ratio, OR) were 4.66 (95% confidence interval (CI): 3.73–5.82) for the family history of asthma, 3.50 (95% CI: 2.62–4.67) for the family history of atopy, 3.57 (95% CI: 3.03–4.22) for the family history of any allergic diseases, 1.96 (95% CI: 1.47–2.61) for the family history of allergic rhinitis, and 2.75 (95% CI: 1.12–6.76) for the family history of atopic dermatitis. For housing-related factors, including the presence of mold, mold spots, mold odor, cockroach, water damage, and incense burning, the random-effect pooled OR ranged from 1.43 to 1.73. Other risk factors with significant pooled OR for asthma development included male gender (1.30, 95% CI: 1.23–1.38), cigarette smoke exposure (1.44, 95% CI: 1.30–1.60), cigarette smoking (1.66, 95% CI: 1.44–1.90), body mass index (BMI)–related parameters (pooled OR ranged from 1.06 to 2.02), various types of air pollution (NO2, PM10, and O3; pooled OR ranged from 1.03 to 1.22), and pre- and perinatal factors (low birth weight, preterm birth, and cesarean section; pooled OR ranged from 1.14 to 1.32). Conclusions The family history of asthma was the most frequently reported risk factor for asthma development in Asia with the highest risk estimate for asthma development. This suggests a major role of the genetic component in asthma pathogenesis. Further study on asthma genetics is required to improve the current understanding of asthma etiology. Abstract
Objectives In recent years, there has been a clear trend of increasing allergic diseases especially in children, and developing countries are no exception. Thepresentstudy sought to determine the risk factors associated with wheezing among school children aged 6–7 and 13–14 years living in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Study design Cross-sectional. Methods Data for this cross-sectional study is the history of wheeze in the last 12 months. The participants included 6-7- and 13-14-year-old girls and boys studying in urban schools in Khuzestan Province in 2019. We collected the data using the multi stage sampling technique as suggested in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). The research reviewed the literature and consulted experts to collect the risk factors for demographic and clinical information, environmental exposure and lifestyle. Results Eight thousand questionnaires were handed out to both age groups, of which 7344 were completed. Two hundred ninety-nine (4.1 %) of the participants had current wheeze. Three-point four percent (124 individuals) in the 6–7 year age group and 4.8 % in the 13–14-year-old age group had current wheezing. The results of the logistic regression model suggest that the most significant risk factors associated with the chance of developing current wheeze in the both age groups are: being male (OR: 1.46, 95 % CI: 1.12–1.88), being from employed mother families (OR: 1.50, 95 %, CI:1.05–2.08), property ownership (OR:1.36, 95 %, CI:1.04–1.79) bugs in the property (OR: 1.29, 95 %, CI:0.99–1.70) mold in the property (OR: 1.75, 95 %, CI:1.12–2.76), pet(s) in the student's bedroom (OR: 1.75, 95 %, CI: 0.97–3.14), a family history of asthma and allergic diseases (OR: 2.20, 95 %, CI: 1.69–2.87), tobacco smoke exposures in the property (OR: 1.43, 95 %, CI:1.04–1.96), having allergic rhinitis (OR: 7.86, 95 % CI: 5.89–10.50) and eczema (OR: 3.85, 95 % CI: 2.10–7.08). Conclusions Families are suggested to adopt strategies to reduce exposure to outdoor air pollutants and contain indoor allergens. More studies are necessary to further explore the effects of modifying and changing these risk factors. 3.4 % in the 6–7 year age group and 4.8 % in the 13–14 year age group had current wheezing. In both age groups, current wheeze is more common in boys than girls. Mold in the home, pet in the bedroom and tobacco smoke exposures are the most important risk factors for current wheeze.

Abstract
Background Asthma is a common pediatric chronic respiratory disease worldwide. Previous studies showed the prevalence of childhood asthma increased in developed countries as well as in Taiwan in the late 20th century. Recently, several reports from different parts of the world showed a reversed trend in this epidemic of childhood asthma prevalence. This study investigated the trend of childhood asthma through serial cross-section questionnaire surveys in the southern part of Taiwan, and identified associated factors related to this trend in elementary school children. Methods We used the Chinese version of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)29 questionnaire to assess the asthma status of elementary school students aged 6–12 years in Tainan city in 3 independent study periods, namely, 2008–2009, 2010–2012, and 2017–2018. We assessed the trend of “asthma” and “related respiratory symptoms” across 3 study periods. Results Of the 19,633 respondents, 17,545 (89.4%) completed the questionnaires. After adjustment for covariates, the prevalence of asthma and related respiratory symptoms was significantly lower in 2017–2018 than in the 2 earlier periods. Among the protective factors, the increasing rate of breastfeeding might be partly responsible for the observed reduced prevalence of current asthma and exercise-induced wheeze, but not physician-diagnosed asthma. The presence of pets in the house was the risk factor that correlated with the prevalence of nocturnal cough. Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant correlation of the prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma, current asthma, and exercise-induced wheezing with the concentrations of air pollutant particles with aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μM (PM10) (r = 0.84, 0.77 and 0.81, respectively). Conclusion The prevalence of asthma and related respiratory symptoms has declined in elementary school-age children in southern Taiwan. The increased prevalence of breastfeeding, decreased rate of the presence of pets in the house, and improvement in outdoor air pollution seem to be related to this decreasing trend of asthma in school children. Our findings will provide the scientific base to empower prevention policy to reverse the trend of childhood asthma prevalence. Trial registration N/A

Abstract
Asthma, rhinitis, and eczema are becoming increasingly prevalent among children in China. Studies have shown that the perinatal period is critical and impacts children’s health. However, research on the associations between perinatal factors and childhood allergic diseases in China are few. We investigated 7366 children of ages 0–8 years old. The childhood asthma and allergies were surveyed by distributing questionnaires, modelled after Dampness in Buildings and Health (DBH) study in Sweden and had been validated. To determine the prevalence of the allergic conditions, explore for potential confounders, and analyze the associations between the allergies and the home environmental factors, chi-square test and binary logistic regression models (enter method) were employed. The prevalence of children’s doctor-diagnosed asthma, rhinitis, and eczema were 4.4%, 9.5%, and 39.1%, respectively. After adjusting for sociodemographic factors, the negative effect of dampness/humidity on children’s health became more obvious, with odd ratios (aORs) of up to 1.70 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12–2.57) for doctor-diagnosed asthma (DDA), 2.12 (95% CI: 1.38–3.25) for doctor-diagnosed rhinitis (DDR) and 1.79 (95% CI: 1.46–2.21) for doctor-diagnosed eczema (DDE). With parental smoking, aORs of up to 4.66 (95% CI: 1.99–10.92) for DDA and 1.74 (95%: 1.00–3.02) for DDE. Renovation exhibited aORs of up to 1.67 (95% CI: 1.13–2.47) for DDR. Although they showed no significant associations with some of the health outcomes, contact with animals, in general, were risk factors for the allergic conditions. Generally, the indoor environmental factors around the perinatal period were significant risk factors for the doctor-diagnosed allergic conditions discussed in this study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Allergic rhinitis is a common disease in Turkey. However, there are not enough studies on its prevalence. Survey-based studies conducted by experienced and qualified researchers to large populations provide information about the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and risk factors associated with it. AIM The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and related factors in university students in Anatolia. METHODS An extended and modified form of "The European Community Respiratory Health Survey" was conducted to university students in Turkey. The data were obtained through a face-to-face interview method. R version 4.0.2 was used for statistical analysis. Data were presented as frequency and percentage. Chi-squared test of independence was used to analyze the relationship between allergic rhinitis diagnosis and other variables. Statistically significant variables were further analyzed with multivariate logistic regression test. RESULTS Data was collected from a total of 2020 participants, but 1714 participants were eligible for multivariate analysis. The mean age of the participants was 20.71 ± 3.12 years; 42.88 (n= 735) were male, and 57.12% (n= 979) were female. While the rate of those who thought that they had nasal allergies was 23.862% (n = 409), the rate of those diagnosed by a doctor was 15.986% (n = 274). The most common allergic symptom in the participants was sneezing, and the most common triggering factor was house dust. CONCLUSION We found a high prevalence of 15.986% doctor diagnosed allergic rhinitis among university students in Anatolia. Genetic, environmental and economic factors were associated with high prevalence of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of childhood asthma may have changed with rapid economic development. This study aims to ascertain potential changes in asthma prevalence in relation to changes in socioeconomic, parental and household factors, based on a comparison between two periods spanning over 20 years in Lanzhou, a large northwestern city of China. Methods Cross-sectional studies using the same protocols were performed in Lanzhou, China in 1994–1995 (Period I) and in 2017 (Period II). Children of 6–12 years old from elementary schools were selected by a multistage sampling method. Information on the presence of asthma and asthma-related symptoms of children, socioeconomic status, feeding methods, parental illness and behavior patterns, as well as household characteristics, were collected through a questionnaire survey. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios of asthma prevalence with regard to socioeconomic, parental and household factors, respectively. Results Significant prevalence reductions were observed for paternal smoking, household coal use, and parental asthma, while the prevalence increased significantly for children sleeping in their own rooms or own beds, ventilation use during cooking, and parental occupation and education level after 22 years. In children, the prevalence of ever-diagnosed asthma decreased from 3.2% in period I to 1.5% in Period II (P<0.001); the prevalence of wheeze also decreased from 15.4% to 9.3% (P<0.001). Passive smoking (OR =1.531, 95% CI: 1.032–2.270) and poor household ventilation (OR =1.709, 95% CI: 1.208–2.416) were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of wheeze in Period I, whereas household mold (OR =2.112, 95% CI: 1.203–3.811) was significantly associated with prevalence of wheeze. Parental asthma history was associated with increased prevalence of asthma and asthma-related symptoms. Breastfeeding was significantly associated with reduced risk of asthma in period II children. Conclusions The prevalence of asthma and that of asthma-related symptoms were lower in 2017 than in 1994–1995 in school children living in Lanzhou. In 2017 with increased urbanization and industrialization, breastfeeding became a significant protective factor and household mold was a significant risk factor for asthma diagnosis and asthma-related symptoms. Promoting breastfeeding and household mold control is recommended to reduce the risk of childhood asthma in contemporary Lanzhou.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the risk factors for atopic and nonatopic asthma among children in Puerto Rico. We aimed to identify modifiable risk factors for atopic and nonatopic asthma in this vulnerable population. METHODS Case-control study of children with (n = 305) and without (n = 327) asthma in San Juan (Puerto Rico). Asthma was defined as physician-diagnosed asthma and wheeze in the previous year. Atopic asthma (n = 210) was defined as asthma and greater than or equal to one positive IgE to aero-allergens. Nonatopic asthma (n = 95) was defined as asthma and no positive IgE to the allergens tested. Logistic regression was used for the multivariable analysis of atopic and nonatopic asthma. RESULTS In a multivariable analysis, body mass index (BMI) z score, prematurity, parental asthma, lifetime exposure to gun violence, and having a bird in the child's home were associated with increased odds of atopic asthma, while each one-point increment in a dietary score (range: -2 [least healthy diet] to +2 [healthiest diet]) was associated with 37% reduced odds of atopic asthma (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.48-0.81; P < .01). In a separate multivariable analysis, parental asthma, early-life second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure, and daycare attendance in the first year of life were significantly associated with increased odds of nonatopic asthma, while each one-point increment in the dietary score was associated with 42% reduced odds of nonatopic asthma (95% CI = 0.45-0.76; P < .01). CONCLUSIONS We have identified potentially modifiable risk factors for atopic asthma (eg, BMI and gun violence), nonatopic asthma (eg, early-life SHS and daycare attendance), or both (eg, an unhealthy diet) in Puerto Rican children.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Data on the predictors of chronic cough development in young children are scarce. Our primary objective was to examine the factors associated with young children developing a chronic cough, with a focus on childcare attendance. Methods: A secondary analysis of data collected in a prospective cohort study of children presenting to three emergency departments and three primary healthcare centers in southeast Queensland, Australia. Eligible children where those aged <6-years presenting with cough and without known underlying chronic lung disease other than asthma. Children were followed for 4 weeks to ascertain cough duration. The primary outcome was persistent cough at day-28. Logistic regression models were undertaken to identify independent predictors of chronic cough including sensitivity analyses that accounted for children with unknown cough status at day-28. Results: In 362 children, 95 (26.2%) were classified as having chronic cough. In models that included only children for whom cough status was known at day-28, symptom duration at enrolment, age <12 months [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 4.5, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1, 18.7], gestational age (aOR 3.2, 95%CI 1.4, 7.9), underlying medical conditions (aOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.3, 5.5), a history of wheeze (aOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.4, 4.8) and childcare attendance (aOR 2.3, 95% CI 1.2, 4.4) were independent predictors of chronic cough. Amongst childcare attendees only, 64 (29.8%) had chronic cough at day-28. The strongest predictor of chronic cough amongst childcare attendees was continued attendance at childcare during their illness (aOR = 12.9, 95% CI 3.9, 43.3). Conclusion: Gestational age, underlying medical conditions, prior wheeze and childcare attendance are risk factors for chronic cough in young children. Parents/careers need to be aware of the risks associated with their child continuing to attend childcare whilst unwell and childcare centers should reinforce prevention measures in their facilities.

Abstract
Objectives No previous study has used repeated measures data to examine the associations of dog/cat ownership with wheezing and asthma prevalence among children. This prospective study used repeated measurers analysis to determine whether dog/cat ownership in childhood is an independent risk factor for wheezing and asthma, after adjustment for gestational, socio-economical, and demographical confounders confounders, in Japan. Methods We conducted a multicenter pilot study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS) during 2009–2010. Among 440 newborn infants enrolled, 410 (52.8% males) were evaluated for dog/cat ownership in the home and history of wheezing and asthma in five follow-up questionnaire surveys (until age 6 years). Dog/cat ownership during follow-up period was categorized into four groups: 7.6% were long-term dog/cat owners, 5.9% were toddler-age owners, 5.9% were preschool-age owners, and 80.7% were never owners. Results The prevalence of wheezing during follow-up period increased from 20.8% to 35.4% and the prevalence of asthma increased from 1.3% to 16.3%. A fitted logistic generalized estimating equation models including important confounders showed no significant associations of the interaction between dog and/or cat ownership and follow-up time with the risks of wheezing and asthma. However, the risks of wheezing and asthma were slightly lower for long-term and toddler-age dog/cat owners than for preschool-age and never owners. Conclusions The present findings suggest that dog and cat ownership from toddler-age does not increase the risks of wheezing and asthma compared with never owners among Japanese children.

Abstract
Background: Findings on the associations between household pet-keeping and allergic diseases, including asthma, rhinitis, and eczema, have been contradictory, with investigations reporting positive, negative, and null associations. This study sought to estimate the prevalence of pet-keeping among families in Kuwait and to assess the associations between pet-keeping and symptoms of allergic diseases among adolescents. Methods: Schoolchildren aged 11-14 years (n = 3,864) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The children's parents completed questionnaires regarding their child's environmental exposures, including pet-keeping in the past 12 months, and clinical history and symptoms of allergic diseases. Associations were assessed using Poisson regression with robust variance estimation, and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. Results: Pet-keeping in the past 12 months was reported by 42.8% of the participating families. Birds, cats, rabbits, fish, and dogs were kept by 28.3, 13.2, 7.8, 3.9, and 3.1% of all households, respectively. Current cat ownership was significantly associated with current wheezing (aPR 1.29, 95% CI 1.05-1.58), current rhinitis symptoms (aPR 1.18, 95% CI 1.02-1.36), and ever doctor-diagnosed eczema (aPR 1.25, 95% CI 1.03-1.50). Current rabbit-keeping was positively associated with multiple symptoms of asthma (e.g., study-defined current asthma: aPR 1.38, 95% CI 1.04-1.82) and eczema (e.g., severe eczema: aPR 1.94, 95% CI 1.02-3.71). Similarly, current bird-keeping was associated with study-defined current rhinitis (aPR 1.19, 95% CI 1.05-1.41) and current itchy rash (aPR 1.27, 95% CI 1.10-1.46). Conclusions: Household pet-keeping is very common and diverse in Kuwait and was found to be positively associated with symptoms of allergic diseases among adolescents. The findings of associations between rabbit-keeping and symptoms of asthma and eczema add to the existing literature and further highlight the importance of considering the pet type when assessing such associations.

Abstract
Rhinoconjunctivitis is a public health problem that causes major illness and disability worldwide. Epidemiological studies intended to determine the burden of rhinoconjunctivitis in Kuwait are limited. Hence, this study sought to estimate the prevalence of rhinoconjunctivitis among adolescents in Kuwait and explore its association with different risk factors. Schoolchildren aged 11–14 years (n = 3,864) were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Parents completed questionnaires regarding their children's clinical history and symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis and relevant exposures. Associations were assessed using Poisson regression with robust variance estimation, and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. The 12-month (current) prevalence estimates of rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, and severe rhinoconjunctivitis were 28.6% (1,040/3,643), 13.5% (497/3,689), and 1.2% (44/3,689), respectively. The prevalence of current rhinoconjunctivitis symptoms was higher in boys compared to girls (aPR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.01–1.41). Parental history of rhinitis and asthma showed positive associations with rhinoconjunctivitis in offspring. Trend analyses showed that rhinoconjunctivitis prevalence decreased with increasing numbers of total siblings (aPR = 0.92, Ptrend < 0.001) and older siblings (aPR = 0.90, Ptrend < 0.001). Rhinoconjunctivitis is common among adolescents in Kuwait and its epidemiology is similar to that found in western countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pet and dampness or mould exposure are considered risk factors for asthma and sensitization. It is unclear whether timing of exposure to these factors is differentially associated with asthma risk and sensitization in adolescence. OBJECTIVE We investigated the role of timing of pet and dampness or mould exposure in asthma and sensitization in adolescence. Understanding this role is essential to build targeted prevention strategies. METHODS We used data from 1871 participants of the Dutch Prevention and Incidence of Asthma and Mite Allergy (PIAMA) cohort. Residential exposure to pets, dampness or mould was assessed by repeated parental questionnaires. We used asthma data from the 17-year questionnaire and sensitization data from the 16-year medical examination. We characterized timing using longitudinal exposure patterns from pregnancy till age 17 using longitudinal latent class growth modelling. We used logistic regression models to analyse associations of exposure patterns with asthma at age 17 and sensitization at age 16. RESULTS For none of the time windows, exposure to pets and dampness or mould was associated with asthma at age 17, but a lower sensitization risk at age 16 was suggested, for example the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for sensitization was 0.63 (0.35-1.11) and 0.69 (0.44-1.08) for early life and persistently high pet exposure, respectively, compared with very low exposure. An inverse association was also suggested for sensitization and moderate early childhood dampness or mould exposure (0.71 [0.42-1.19]). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Different timing of pet and dampness or mould exposure was not associated with asthma, but lower risk of sensitization in adolescence was suggested, which could be partly attributable to reversed causation. Current findings are not sufficient to recommend pet avoidance to prevent allergic disease. More prospective studies are needed to obtain insights that can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract
Dogs are a major source of indoor allergens. However, the prevalence of dog allergies in China remains unclear, especially in children. In the present study, Can f 7, a canine allergen belonging to the Niemann pick type C2 protein family, was selected to study its sensitization rate in Chinese children with dog allergies. The Can f 7 gene was subcloned into a pET‑28a vector and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) cells. Recombinant Can f 7 was purified by nickel affinity chromatography, identified by SDS‑PAGE electrophoresis, and had its allergenicity assessed by western blot, ELISA and basophil activation tests. Through a series of bioinformatical approaches, B‑cell epitopes, secondary structures, and 3 dimensional (3D) homology modeling of Can f 7 were predicted. The activity of the B cell epitopes was verified by ELISA. The recombinant Can f 7 showed a distinct band with a molecular weight of 14 kDa. Six of 20 sera from dog‑allergic children reacted positively to the Can f 7. Can f 7 induced an ~4.0‑fold increase in cluster of differentiation 63 and C‑C motif chemokine receptor R3 expression in basophils sensitized with the serum of dog‑allergic children compared with those of non‑allergic controls. The secondary structure analysis showed that Can f 7 contains 6 β‑sheets. Five B cell epitopes of Can f 7 were predicted, and two of these were confirmed by ELISA. These results indicate that Can f 7 is an important canine allergen in Chinese children and provide novel data for further research concerning the use of Can f 7 in the diagnosis and treatment of Chinese children with canine allergy symptoms.
