Abstract
Muscle weakness has been associated to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in the general population. However, it is still unclear whether this association is maintained in older adults. This study investigated correlations between low handgrip strength (HGS) and metabolic syndrome, or some of its components, in older adults through a systematic review of the literature. Searches were conducted in the Virtual Health Library Regional Portal, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase, MEDLINE/ PubMed, SciELO, and Web of Science databases for relevant studiesinvestigating muscle weakness (measured by hand dynamometer) and metabolic syndrome or its components in older adult populations, published up to September 2023. From the 2050 references initially identified, 20 studies, comprising a total of 31,264 older adults of both genders, completely met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Eighteen studies showed that lower HGS was associated with metabolic syndrome or some of its risk factors, such as abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, or high blood pressure. Two studies found that older men with high blood pressure had increased HGS. Most studies included in this systematic review revealed a significant correlation between reduced HGS and metabolic syndrome or some of its components, especially abdominal obesity and insulin resistance. We conclude that below-average HGS can be associated with metabolic syndrome in older adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is inconsistent evidence on the associations between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and risk of sarcopenia. The aim of the study was to determine the evidence existing between HDL-C and sarcopenia in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS We used a panel study design of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), with 7,415 participants (mean age 57.5 years) from 2011, 2013, and 2015. HDL-C was measured by colorimetric test of venous serum samples. Sarcopenia was defined as low muscle mass, plus low muscle strength, or low physical performance. Muscle mass was estimated by anthropometric measures. Muscle strength was measured by handgrip strength using dynamometer. Physical performance was measured by 5-time chair stand test, gait speed test, and short physical performance battery. RESULTS With 961 (13.0%) sarcopenia cases, each 1-unit increase (1 SD = 15.4 mg/dL) of HDL-C levels was associated with 42% increased odds of incident sarcopenia (OR = 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.28-1.58) at 4-year follow-up. Females with high HDL-C levels (HDL-C >60 mg/dL) had a higher risk of sarcopenia (OR = 2.49, 95% CI = 1.76-3.52). The restricted cubic spline curves showed a J-shaped association between HDL-C and risk of sarcopenia in females. HDL-C was negatively associated with muscle mass (β = -0.23, 95% CI = -0.27 to -0.20) and hand grip strength (β = -0.05, 95% CI = -0.19 to 0.09). CONCLUSION High HDL-C levels were associated with higher risk of sarcopenia among middle-aged and older Chinese adults, and appropriate control of its high levels informs the management of sarcopenia.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether skeletal muscle (SM) mass correlates with plasma lipids in metabolic healthy young adults. The study was designed as a retrospective observational monocentric study. Data on plasma lipids and SM mass of subjects attending our institution from 1999 to 2014 were analyzed. Inclusion criteria were being 18-45 years old and in apparently good health. SM mass was evaluated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using the equation proposed by Janssen and normalized to height as skeletal muscle index (SMI: SM mass/height2). The association between SMI and plasma lipids levels was examined using a crude and adjusted linear regression model including age, sex, BMI and waist circumference as additional covariates. The study population consisted of 450 subjects (273 females) without metabolic syndrome (12.2% with normal body weight, 33.1% overweight, and 54.7% with obesity). SMI, total-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and Triglycerides were higher, whereas HDL-cholesterol was lower in overweight and obese patients as compared with normal weight subjects. SMI was inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol in female patients with obesity but not in male patients with obesity, in normal- or over-weight subjects (p < 0.05). These results suggest that changes in SM mass occurring in obesity could have a role in worsening lipid profile with special reference to HDL-cholesterol.

Abstract
Normal-weight but high-percentage trunk fat phenotype was characterized in a setting where adiposity is not associated with educational and socioeconomic status. Body size trajectory since birth, current body composition measured using whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, cardiometabolic traits, serum adipokines, and dietary intake were measured cross-sectionally in 251 normal weight Japanese female university students whose fasting triglyceride and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) averaged 56 mg/dL and 1.2, respectively. They were grouped according to tertile of percentage trunk fat. Although HOMA-IR did not differ among three groups, high-percentage trunk fat was associated with higher triglyceride and apolipoprotein B, and lower HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1. In multivariate logistic regression analyses, weight-adjusted skeletal muscle mass (OR: 0.13, 95% CI: 0.04-0.38, p < 0.001), weight gain from birth to age 12 years (OR: 1.214、95% CI: 1.008-1.463、p = 0.04), and cereal consumption (OR:1.008, 95% CI: 1.000-1.016, p = 0.04) were associated with high-percentage trunk fat independent of birthweight, HOMA-IR, adipose tissue-insulin resistance index (the product of fasting insulin and free fatty acid), triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein A1 and B, leptin, adiponectin, blood pressure, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Early childhood growth, lower skeletal muscle mass, and higher cereal consumption may be associated with normal-weight but high-percentage trunk fat phenotype in Japanese female university students in this subanalysis study. Atherogenic profile of lipids and apolipoproteins may be directly related to abdominal fat accumulation.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and sarcopenia (SP) have emerged as significant public health concerns in contemporary societies, characterized by shared pathophysiological mechanisms and interrelatedness, leading to profound health implications. In this prospective cohort study conducted within a US population, we aimed to examine the influence of MetS and SP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Methods This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III for the years 1999-2006 and 2011-2018, and death outcomes were ascertained by linkage to National Death Index (NDI) records through December 31, 2019. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. In addition, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted to test the robustness of the results. Results Over a median follow-up period of 13.3 years (95% CI: 12.8-13.8), 1714 deaths were observed. The groups characterized by MetS-/SP+, MetS+/SP-, and MetS+/SP+ exhibited higher all-cause mortality rates in comparison to the MetS-/SP- group, with the MetS+/SP+ group (HR 1.76, 95% CI: 1.37-2.25) displaying the highest all-cause mortality. Increased cardiovascular mortality was observed in the MetS+/SP- (HR 1.84, 95% CI: 1.24-2.72), and MetS+/SP+ groups (HR 2.39, 95% CI: 1.32-4.35) compared to the MetS-/SP- group, whereas it was not statistically significant in the MetS-/SP+ group. However, among males and individuals aged < 60, the presence of both MetS and SP (MetS+/SP+ group) was found to be significantly associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Conclusion The coexistence of MetS and SP increased the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, particularly in males and in nonelderly populations. Individuals with either MetS or SP may require more careful management to prevent the development of other diseases and thereby reduce mortality.

Abstract
Introduction Seniors are vulnerable to frailty, a condition linked to falls, fractures, hospitalizations, and sarcopenia. Even with regular meals, senior daycare users are at risk for malnutrition. Methods This study assessed malnutrition risk in daycare users, using the web-based Mini Nutritional Assessment Form (MNA®-SF). Individuals identified as malnourished or at risk were examined for changes in nutritional status with and without oral nutritional supplementation (ONS). Results Of 507 subjects, 138 (27.2%) were malnourished or at risk. Discontinuation rates were 20.0% (7/35) for the ONS group and 40.0% (10/25) for the regular care (RC) group. Among 29 patients with measurable weight change after six months, 19 (ONS group) and 10 (RC group) participated. The ONS group exhibited significant increases in body weight (+1.4 ± 2.9 kg, p < 0.01), body mass index (BMI) (+0.6 ± 0.9 kg/m2, p < 0.01), calf circumference (+3.2 ± 0.2 cm, p < 0.01), and grip strength (+1.2 ± 1.9 kg, p = 0.069). Conversely, the RC group showed no significant increases in body weight (+1.0 ± 1.9 kg, p = 0.146), BMI (+0.4 ± 0.8 kg/m2, p = 0.176), or grip strength (-0.7 ± 1.7 kg, p = 0.327), with decreased grip strength and calf circumference (-0.8 ± 0.9 cm, p < 0.05). In the ONS group, 52.6% (10/19) consumed over 400 kcal/day of ONS, and 84.2% maintained this intake for three months. Malnutrition is prevalent among daycare users. Conclusion ONS influences weight, BMI, and calf circumference, potentially reducing discontinuation rates. Abstract
AIM Following the coronavirus disease outbreak, a state of public emergency was declared worldwide, which enforced lifestyle changes. This study therefore aimed to investigate the changes in lifestyle, body composition, hepatic steatosis, and fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) under lockdown. METHODS During the lockdown period, 1344 patients with CLD answered a lifestyle questionnaire. In 298 patients, body composition and liver stiffness measure (LSM)/controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) were analyzed by InBody and FibroScan, respectively, and serial data were obtained in 137 patients. RESULTS More than half of the CLD patients answered decreases in physical activity and frequency of outings during lockdown, while diet was less affected. Overall, 58% of patients showed elevations in CAP values, which were not different statistically over time. Women, but not men, were more likely to increase CAP values during lockdown. Neither LSM nor serum fibrosis markers were elevated chronologically during lockdown. In men, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and visceral fat area (VFA) were significantly increased, whereas in women, lower-limb muscle mass was significantly decreased. Patients with decreased SMI showed elevations in CAP and VFA values, and patients who exercised less showed increases in BMI. CONCLUSION In response to lockdown, men tended to increase body fat but the degree of hepatic steatosis was less affected, while women were more likely to exacerbate hepatic steatosis with skeletal muscle loss among CLD patients. Gender-specific approaches need to be established for management of CLD patients to avoid exacerbation or comorbidity of steatotic liver disease.

Abstract
This review focuses on the question of metabolic syndrome (MS) being a complex, but essentially monophyletic, galaxy of associated diseases/disorders, or just a syndrome of related but rather independent pathologies. The human nature of MS (its exceptionality in Nature and its close interdependence with human action and evolution) is presented and discussed. The text also describes the close interdependence of its components, with special emphasis on the description of their interrelations (including their syndromic development and recruitment), as well as their consequences upon energy handling and partition. The main theories on MS's origin and development are presented in relation to hepatic steatosis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, but encompass most of the MS components described so far. The differential effects of sex and its biological consequences are considered under the light of human social needs and evolution, which are also directly related to MS epidemiology, severity, and relations with senescence. The triggering and maintenance factors of MS are discussed, with especial emphasis on inflammation, a complex process affecting different levels of organization and which is a critical element for MS development. Inflammation is also related to the operation of connective tissue (including the adipose organ) and the widely studied and acknowledged influence of diet. The role of diet composition, including the transcendence of the anaplerotic maintenance of the Krebs cycle from dietary amino acid supply (and its timing), is developed in the context of testosterone and β-estradiol control of the insulin-glycaemia hepatic core system of carbohydrate-triacylglycerol energy handling. The high probability of MS acting as a unique complex biological control system (essentially monophyletic) is presented, together with additional perspectives/considerations on the treatment of this 'very' human disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many older adults are at risk of sarcopenia, a gradual loss of muscle mass affecting muscle strength and physical function, which can lead to adverse health consequences deteriorating their independence. However, the detection could be delayed due to the requirement of many measures, including a complex imaging modality. Thus, an exploration for a practical community- or home-based measure would be helpful to identify at-risk older adults and begin the timely management. OBJECTIVE To explore the ability of the upper limb loading during a seated push-up test (ULL-SPUT) to determine the presence of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS Older adults (n= 110; 62 females, average age approximately 77 years) were cross-sectionally assessed for sarcopenia using standard measures (handgrip strength, appendicular skeletal muscle mass, and walking speed) and the ULL-SPUT. RESULTS Data from standard measures indicated that 44 participants had sarcopenia. The ULL-SPUT index of < 16.9 kg/m2 for females (sensitivity = 86%, specificity = 78%, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.85) and < 19.7 kg/m2 for males (sensitivity = 73%, specificity = 69%, AUC = 0.83) could optimally identify participants with sarcopenia. CONCLUSION The ULL-SPUT index could be used to screen and monitor older adults with sarcopenia in various clinical, community, and home settings. This practical measure may be accomplished using a digital bathroom scale on a hard, even surface. Outcomes would identify an adult who should undergo further confirmation of sarcopenia through standard measures or the initiation of timely management to promote treatment effectiveness.

Abstract
The prognostic significance of obesity in sarcopenic adults is controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of additional obesity on health outcomes in sarcopenia. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and CENTRAL were systematically searched for studies to compare health outcomes of adults with sarcopenic obesity (SO) to those of sarcopenic non-obese (SNO) adults. We also considered the methods of assessing obesity. Of 15060 records screened, 65 papers were included (100612 participants). Older community-dwelling SO adults had 15% lower mortality risk than the SNO group (hazard ratio, HR: 0.85, 95% confidence interval 0.76, 0.94) even when obesity was assessed by measurement of body composition. Additionally, meta-regression analysis revealed a significant negative linear correlation between the age and the HR of all-cause mortality in SO vs. SNO community-dwelling adults, but not in severely ill patients. Compared with SNO, SO patients presented lower physical performance, higher risk for metabolic syndrome, but similar cognitive function, risk of falls and cardiovascular diseases. Age-related obesity, SO and later fat loss leading to SNO represent consecutive phases of biological aging. Additional obesity could worsen the health state in sarcopenia, but above 65 years SO represents a biologically earlier phase with longer life expectancy than SNO.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease. As the second stage of developing steatosis, nonalcoholic hepatitis (NASH) carries the risk of fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Sarcopenia is defined as a condition characterized by a decrease in muscle mass and functional decline. Both NAFLD and sarcopenia are global problems. The pathophysiological mechanisms that link the two entities of the disease are insulin resistance, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, impairment of myostatin and adiponectin, or physical inactivity. Furthermore, disorders of the gut-liver axis appear to induce the process of developing NAFLD and sarcopenia. The correlations between NAFLD and sarcopenia appear to be bidirectional, so the main objective of the review was to determine the cause-and-effect relationship between the two diseases.

Abstract
AIMS The association between skeletal muscle mass and diabetes incidence/insulin resistance/glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate such association in clinically apparently healthy males and females. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 372,399 Korean males and females who completed bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in a health-screening programme was performed. Skeletal muscle index was used as an indicator of skeletal muscle mass. Skeletal muscle index (%) [appendicular skeletal muscle mass (kg)/body weight (kg)X100] was estimated using BIA. The study outcomes were diabetes incidence, homoeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and HbA1C. RESULTS The mean age of study participants was 38.92 ± 8.54 years. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed a significant negative association between Skeletal muscle index and diabetes incidence/HOMA-IR/HbA1C after adjusting for various confounding factors. Odds ratios (95% confidence interval (CI)) of diabetes incidence in Q2, Q3, and Q4 compared to the lowest quantile (Q1) were 0.95 (0.85-1.05), 0.88 (0.78-0.99), and 0.79 (0.69-0.9), respectively. Beta coefficients (95% CI) of HOMA-IR in Q2, Q3, and Q3 with Q1 were 0.05 (0.03-0.07), -0.06 (-0.09∼-0.04), and -0.19 (-0.22∼-0.16), respectively. Beta coefficients (95% CI) of HbA1C in Q2, Q3, and Q4 with Q1 were 0.02 (0.01-0.03), -0.001 (-0.01∼0.01), and -0.02 (-0.03∼-0.01), respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated negative associations of skeletal muscle mass with diabetes incidence, insulin resistance, and HbA1C levels in healthy adults.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Among chronic diseases affecting older adults, metabolic syndrome (MetS) is known to be closely related to sarcopenia. Insulin resistance may play a key role in the increased frequency of sarcopenia associated with metabolic disorders. To date, an exercise-nutrition combined intervention has been the treatment of choice for sarcopenia. However, trials of combined interventions for individuals with sarcopenia and MetS are still lacking. This study aims to develop and conduct a standardised intervention, named the Multidisciplinary combined Exercise and Nutrition inTervention fOR Sarcopenia (MENTORS), for sarcopenic older patients with MetS. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This multicentre, randomised controlled trial includes 168 community-dwelling older adults with sarcopenia and MetS. The 12-week MENTORS comprises an exercise intervention consisting of an introductory phase (3 weeks; twice-weekly visits), an expanded phase (3 weeks; twice-weekly visits) and a maintenance phase (6 weeks; once-weekly visits); and a nutrition intervention tailored to the nutritional status of individual subjects. Outcomes will be measured at 0-week, 12-week and 24-week postintervention. The data will be analysed using the intention-to-treat and per-protocol principle. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Before screening, all participants will be provided with oral and written information. Ethical approval has already been obtained from all participating hospitals. The study results will be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT04948736.

Abstract
Many countries are facing the advent of super-aging societies, where sarcopenia and frailty will become pertinent problems. The prevalence of comorbidities is a major problem in countries with aged populations as elderly people suffer from various diseases, such as diabetes, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and dementia. All of these diseases are associated with sarcopenia and frailty, and they frequently cause falls, fractures, and a decline in activities of daily living. Fractures in the elderly people are associated with bone fragility, which is influenced by diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Nutritional support for chronic disease patients and sarcopenic individuals with adequate energy and protein intake, vitamin D supplementation, blood glucose level management for individuals with diabetes, obesity prevention, nutritional education for healthy individuals, and the enlightenment of society could be crucial to solve the health-related problems in super-aging societies.

Abstract
Background: Patients with plaque psoriasis have an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. However, no studies have assessed the nutritional status or screening methods of this population. Aims: This review aimed to identify and summarise metabolic syndrome screening criteria and the tools/methods used in nutrition assessment in patients with plaque psoriasis. Data synthesis: PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid and Scopus were searched from inception to March 2023, following the Arkensey and O'Malley framework, to identify articles that report nutritional assessment methods/tools and metabolic screening criteria. Twenty-one studies were identified. Overall, these studies used four different screening criteria to define metabolic syndrome. Patients with psoriasis had a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome and had a poor nutritional status compared to controls. However, only anthropometric measures such as weight, height and waist circumference were employed to determine the nutritional status. Only two studies assessed the vitamin D status. Conclusions: Patients with psoriasis have a poor nutritional status, and they are at risk of nutrient deficiencies. However, these health aspects are not routinely assessed and may increase the risk of malnutrition among these patients. Therefore, additional assessments, such as body composition and dietary assessment, are needed to determine the nutritional status to provide a suitable intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between muscle and prognosis, especially that between muscle distribution across different body parts, and the related prognosis is not well established. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between muscle distribution and all-cause and cause-specific mortality and their potential modifiers. DESIGN Longitudinal cohort study. C-index, IDI, and NRI were used to determine the best indicator of prognosis. COX regression analysis was performed to explore the relationship between variables and outcomes. Interaction and subgroup analyses were applied to identify the potential modifiers. PARTICIPANTS A total of 5052 participants (weighted: 124,841,420) extracted from the NHANES 2003-2006 of median age 45 years and constituting 50.3% men were assessed. For validation, we included 3040 patients from the INSCOC cohort in China. MAIN MEASURES Muscle mass and distribution. KEY RESULTS: COX regression analysis revealed that upper limbs (HR = 0.41, 95% CI 0.33-0.51), lower limbs (HR = 0.54, 95% CI 0.47-0.64), trunk (HR = 0.71, 95% CI, 0.59-0.85), gynoid (HR = 0.47, 95% CI 0.38-0.58), and total lean mass (HR = 0.55, 95% CI 0.45-0.66) were all associated with the better survival of participants (P trend < 0.001). The changes in the lean mass ratio of the upper and lower limbs and the lean mass ratio of the android and gynoid attenuated the protective effect of lean mass. Age and sex acted as potential modifiers, and the relationship between lean mass and the prognosis was more significant in men and middle-aged participants when compared to that in other age groups. Sensitive analyses depicted that despite lean mass having a long-term impact on prognosis (15 years), it has a more substantial effect on near-term survival (5 years). CONCLUSION Muscle mass and its distribution affect the prognosis with a more significant impact on the near-term than that on the long-term prognosis. Age and sex acted as vital modifiers.

Abstract
PURPOSE Altered body composition and liver enzymes are known to be related to cardiometabolic risk. Our study aimed to evaluate the association between fat-to-muscle ratio (FMR), alanine aminotransferase/aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) ratio and cardiometabolic risk. METHODS In total, 1557 participants aged ≥40 years were included. A bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA) was used to measure fat mass and muscle mass. We created a cardiometabolic risk score with one point for each cardiometabolic risk factor, including elevated triglycerides (TGs), decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), elevated blood pressure (BP), and abnormal blood glucose, yielding a score of 0-4 for each participant (≥2 for high-risk and <2 for low-risk). Logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the relationship between FMR, ALT/AST ratio and cardiometabolic risk. RESULTS FMR and ALT/AST ratio were significantly higher in the high-risk group than in the low-risk group (P<0.001). FMR and ALT/AST ratio were both positively correlated with a higher cardiometabolic risk score and the presence of each cardiometabolic risk factor. In subgroup analyses categorized according to FMR and ALT/AST ratio cutoffs, the high-FMR/high-ALT/AST group had the highest cardiometabolic risk (OR=8.51; 95% CI 4.46-16.25 in women and OR=5.09; 95% CI 3.39-7.65 in men) after adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSION FMR and ALT/AST ratio were positively associated with cardiometabolic risk. Combining these two indicators improved the prediction of cardiometabolic risk.

Abstract
Sarcopenia, a condition of low muscle mass, quality, and strength, is commonly found in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes including reduction in quality of life, increased mortality, and complications. A major contributor to sarcopenia in CLD is the imbalance in muscle protein turnover wherein changes in various metabolic factors such as hyperammonemia, amino acid deprivation, hormonal imbalance, gut dysbiosis, insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, etc. have important roles. In particular, hyperammonemia is a key mediator of the liver-gut axis and is known to contribute to sarcopenia by various mechanisms including increased expression of myostatin, increased phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2a, cataplerosis of α-ketoglutarate, mitochondrial dysfunction, increased reactive oxygen species that decrease protein synthesis and increased autophagy-mediated proteolysis. Skeletal muscle is a major organ of insulin-induced glucose metabolism, and sarcopenia is closely linked to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Patients with liver cirrhosis are in a hypermetabolic state that is associated with catabolism and depletion of amino acids, particularly branched-chain amino acids. Sarcopenia can have significant implications for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the most common form of CLD worldwide, because of the close link between metabolic syndrome and sarcopenia. This review discusses the potential metabolic derangement as a cause or effect of sarcopenia in CLD, as well as interorgan crosstalk, which that might help identifying a novel therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
This research focused on establishing a hierarchy concerning the influence of various biological markers and body composition parameters on preventing, diagnosing and managing Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Our cross-sectional cohort study included 104 subjects without any atherosclerotic antecedent pathology, organized in two groups (with and without MetS). All participants underwent clinical and anthropometric measurements, DEXA investigation and blood tests for all MetS criteria, together with adiponectin, leptin, insulin, uric acid and CRP. Based on mathematical logic, we calculated a normalized sensitivity score to compare the predictive power of biomarkers and parameters associated with MetS, upon the prevalence of MetS. Patients with MetS report higher levels of uric acid (p = 0.02), CRP (p = 0.012) and lower levels of adiponectin (p = 0.025) than patients without MetS. The top three biological markers with the highest predictive power of the prevalence of the disease are HDL, insulin, and adiponectin:leptin ratio, and the top three body composition parameters are trunk fat-free percentage, waist-height ratio and trunk fat percentage. Their high sensitivity scores differentiate them from all the other markers analysed in the study. Our findings report relevant scores for estimating the importance of cardiometabolic risks in the prevalence of MetS. The high rank of protective markers, HDL and trunk fat-free percentage, suggest that positive effects have a stronger association with the prevalence of MetS, than negative ones do. Therefore, this risk stratification study provides important support for prevention and management programs regarding MetS.

Abstract
In a world in which life expectancy is increasing, understanding and promoting healthy aging becomes a contemporary demand. In the elderly, a sterile, chronic and low-grade systemic inflammation known as "inflammaging" is linked with many age-associated diseases. Considering sarcopenia as a loss of strength and mass of skeletal muscle related to aging, correlations between these two terms have been proposed. Better knowledge of the immune system players in skeletal muscle would help to elucidate their implications in sarcopenia. Characterizing the activators of damage sensors and the downstream effectors explains the inference with skeletal muscle performance. Sarcopenia has also been linked to chronic diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. Implications of inflammatory signals from these diseases negatively affect skeletal muscle. Autophagic mechanisms are closely related with the inflammasome, as autophagy eliminates stress signaling sent by damage organelles, but also acts with an immunomodulatory function affecting immune cells and cytokine release. The use of melatonin, an antioxidant, ROS scavenger and immune and autophagy modulator, or senotherapeutic compounds targeting senescent cells could represent strategies to counteract inflammation. This review aims to present the many factors regulating skeletal muscle inflammaging and their major implications in order to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in sarcopenia.

Abstract
Aging remains a primary risk factor for a host of diseases, including leading causes of death. Aging and associated diseases are inherently multifactorial, with numerous contributing factors and phenotypes at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal scales. Despite the complexity of aging phenomena, models currently used in aging research possess limitations. Frequently used in vivo models often have important physiological differences, age at different rates, or are genetically engineered to match late disease phenotypes rather than early causes. Conversely, routinely used in vitro models lack the complex tissue-scale and systemic cues that are disrupted in aging. To fill in gaps between in vivo and traditional in vitro models, researchers have increasingly been turning to organotypic models, which provide increased physiological relevance with the accessibility and control of in vitro context. While powerful tools, the development of these models is a field of its own, and many aging researchers may be unaware of recent progress in organotypic models, or hesitant to include these models in their own work. In this review, we describe recent progress in tissue engineering applied to organotypic models, highlighting examples explicitly linked to aging and associated disease, as well as examples of models that are relevant to aging. We specifically highlight progress made in skin, gut, and skeletal muscle, and describe how recently demonstrated models have been used for aging studies or similar phenotypes. Throughout, this review emphasizes the accessibility of these models and aims to provide a resource for researchers seeking to leverage these powerful tools.

Abstract
CONTEXT Low skeletal muscle mass often accompanies abdominal obesity in the aging process. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the effect of reduced skeletal muscle mass and its interaction with abdominal obesity on incident type 2 diabetes. METHODS This retrospective longitudinal study included a total of 36,304 diabetes-free Koreans who underwent two or more health check-ups annually or biennially. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis and was presented as a skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) adjusted for body weight. Pre-sarcopenia was defined as an SMI <1 standard deviation of the sex-specific mean for a healthy young reference group. Abdominal obesity was defined using waist circumference ≥ 90 cm for men and ≥ 85 cm for women. Participants were classified into four groups of normal, pre-sarcopenia alone, abdominal obesity alone, and pre-sarcopenic obesity according to initial body composition. RESULTS The cumulative incidence of diabetes was 9.1% during the 7-year follow-up. Compared with the highest tertile, the lowest sex-specific SMI tertile was significantly associated with a greater risk of incident type 2 diabetes (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-1.45) in a fully adjusted model. Pre-sarcopenic obesity significantly increased incident diabetes risk (adjusted HR = 1.57, 95% CI 1.42-1.73) compared with normal body composition, pre-sarcopenia alone, or abdominal obesity alone. CONCLUSIONS Low skeletal muscle mass and its coexistence with abdominal obesity additively increased the risk of incident type 2 diabetes independent of the glycometabolic parameters.

Abstract
Previous cross-sectional studies have indicated that low relative appendicular lean mass (ALM) against body weight (divided by body weight, ALM/Wt, or divided by body mass index, ALM/BMI) was negatively associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Conversely, previous cross-sectional studies have indicated that the absolute ALM or ALM divided by squared height (ALM/Ht2) were positively associated with MetS. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate the association between low absolute or relative skeletal muscle mass, leg muscle power, or percent body fat and the development of MetS in Japanese women in a 7-y prospective study. The study participants included 346 Japanese women aged 26 to 85 years. The participants were divided into low and high groups based on the median values of ALM/Wt, ALM/BMI, ALM/Ht2, absolute ALM, or leg power. The longitudinal relationship between ALM indices or leg power and MetS development was examined using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models (average follow-up duration 7 years, range 1 to 10 years). During follow-up, 24 participants developed MetS. MetS incidence was higher in the low ALM/Wt group than the high ALM/Wt group even after controlling for age, obesity, waist circumference, family history of diabetes, smoking, and physical activity [adjusted hazard ratio = 5.60 (95% CI; 1.04-30.0)]. In contrast, MetS incidence was lower in the low ALM/Ht2 group than the high ALM/Ht2 group [adjusted hazard ratio = 10.6 (95%CI; 1.27-89.1)]. MetS incidence was not significantly different between the low and high ALM/BMI, absolute ALM, and leg power groups. Both ALM/Ht2 and ALM/Wt were not significant predictive variables for MetS development when fat mass or percent body fat was taken into account in the Cox model. At the very least, the results of this study underscore the importance of body composition measurements in that percent body fat, but not ALM, is associated with MetS development.

Abstract
Objectives: Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle loss disease with adverse outcomes, including falls, mortality, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in older patients. Distal radius fractures (DRF), common in older people, are strongly related to falls. We aimed to investigate the correlation between DRF and low skeletal muscle mass, which strongly correlated to sarcopenia. Methods: We performed a retrospective review of data from patients diagnosed with or without DRF in our institute between 2015 and 2020. Finally, after propensity score matching, data from 115 patients with and 115 patients without DRF were used for analyses. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for sex, body mass index (BMI), the presence of low skeletal muscle mass, bone quality measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and comorbidities (diabetes mellitus, CVD). Results: We found that female sex (odds ratio = 3.435, p = 0.015), CVD (odds ratio = 5.431, p < 0.001) and low skeletal muscle mass (odds ratio = 8.062, p = 0.001) were significant predictors for DRF. BMI and osteoporosis were not statistically significantly related to DRF. Conclusions: Women with low skeletal muscle mass and CVD may be more responsible for DRF than osteoporosis.

Abstract
Background Although dyslipidaemia may have a crucial impact on cardiovascular health in adults, there is a lack of specific data in transitional-age youth. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the association of dyslipidaemia with fat-to-muscle ratio (FMR), and establish FMR thresholds for diagnosing dyslipidaemia in transitional-age youth. Methods One thousand six hundred sixty individuals aged 16 to 24 years from the baseline of a subcohort in the Northwest China Natural Population Cohort: Ningxia Project were analysed. Anthropometric characteristics were gauged by a bioelectrical impedance analyser, and dyslipidaemia components were measured using a Beckman AU480 chemistry analyser. Additionally, this study used logistic regression to estimate the risk of dyslipidaemia based on FMR quintiles, and calculate the gender-specific ideal cut-off values of dyslipidaemia and its components by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results Of the 1660 participants, aged 19.06 ± 1.14 years, 558 males and 1102 females. The prevalence of dyslipidaemia was 13.4% and was significantly associated with FMR quintiles among all participants (P < 0.05). The ideal values of FMR in diagnosing dyslipidaemia were 0.2224 for males and 0.4809 for females, while males had a higher AUC than females (0.7118 vs. 0.6656). Meanwhile, high FMR values were significantly associated with adverse outcomes of dyslipidaemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridaemia (P < 0.05). Conclusions The FMR was positively correlated with the prevalence of dyslipidaemia. The FMR can be used as an effective body composition index for diagnosing dyslipidaemia, especially in males, and preventive strategies should be initiated in transitional-age youth to decrease obesity-related dyslipidaemia.

Abstract
An association between obesity and carpal tunnel syndrome is found in many epidemiological studies. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the physiopathological links that could explain the association between these two entities. Ectopic adipose tissue is responsible for metabolic syndrome and inflammation, and is a major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Taking these elements into consideration, we conducted an extensive literature revision of the subject, considering as ectopic fat-related mechanisms the following: (a) the direct compression and the association with the metabolic syndrome of the fat deposition around the wrist, (b) the insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, inflammatory, and oxidative mechanisms related to the central deposition of the fat, (c) the impaired muscle contraction and metabolism related to myosteatosis. Each section presents the cellular pathways which are modified by the ectopic deposition of the adipose tissue and the impact in the pathogeny of the carpal tunnel syndrome. In conclusion, the experimental and clinical data support the epidemiological findings. Efforts to reduce the obesity epidemics will improve not only cardio-metabolic health but will reduce the burden of the disability-free life expectancy due to the carpal tunnel syndrome.

Abstract
We performed a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression to determine if increasing daily protein ingestion contributes to gaining lean body mass (LBM), muscle strength, and physical/functional test performance in healthy subjects. A protocol for the present study was registered (PROSPERO, CRD42020159001), and a systematic search of Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Sciences databases was undertaken. Only randomized controlled trials (RCT) where participants increased their daily protein intake and were healthy and non-obese adults were included. Research questions focused on the main effects on the outcomes of interest and subgroup analysis, splitting the studies by participation in a resistance exercise (RE), age (<65 or ≥65 years old), and levels of daily protein ingestion. Three-level random-effects meta-analyses and meta-regressions were conducted on data from 74 RCT. Most of the selected studies tested the effects of additional protein ingestion during RE training. The evidence suggests that increasing daily protein ingestion may enhance gains in LBM in studies enrolling subjects in RE (SMD [standardized mean difference] = 0.22, 95% CI [95% confidence interval] 0.14:0.30, P < 0.01, 62 studies, moderate level of evidence). The effect on LBM was significant in subjects ≥65 years old ingesting 1.2-1.59 g of protein/kg/day and for younger subjects (<65 years old) ingesting ≥1.6 g of protein/kg/day submitted to RE. Lower-body strength gain was slightly higher by additional protein ingestion at ≥1.6 g of protein/kg/day during RE training (SMD = 0.40, 95% CI 0.09:0.35, P < 0.01, 19 studies, low level of evidence). Bench press strength is slightly increased by ingesting more protein in <65 years old subjects during RE training (SMD = 0.18, 95% CI 0.03:0.33, P = 0.01, 32 studies, low level of evidence). The effects of ingesting more protein are unclear when assessing handgrip strength and only marginal for performance in physical function tests. In conclusion, increasing daily protein ingestion results in small additional gains in LBM and lower body muscle strength gains in healthy adults enrolled in resistance exercise training. There is a slight effect on bench press strength and minimal effect performance in physical function tests. The effect on handgrip strength is unclear.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an emerging clinical condition determined by the reduction in physical function and muscle mass, being a health concern since it impairs quality of life and survival. Exercise training is a well-known approach to improve physical capacities and body composition, hence managing sarcopenia progression and worsening. However, it may be an ineffective treatment for many elderly with exercise-intolerant conditions. Thus, the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) may be a plausible strategy, since these drugs can increase physical function and muscle mass. The decision to initiate AAS treatment should be guided by an evidence-based patient-centric perspective, once the balance between risks and benefits may change depending on the clinical condition coexisting with sarcopenia. This mini-review points out a critical appraisal of evidence and limitation of exercise training and AAS to treat sarcopenia.

Abstract
To identify the association between traditional cardiovascular risk factors, diseases related factors, body composition and adipokines with high cardiovascular risk (HCVR) in psoriatic arthritis and non-psoriatic spondyloarthritis. This was a cross-sectional study involving age and BMI matched adults with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) (n = 56) and non-psoriatic spondyloarthritis (nPsA-SpA) (n = 58). Body composition using whole-body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, adipokines and disease characteristics along with cardiovascular risk scoring QRISK3 and carotid intimal medial thickness (CIMT) was collected. Individuals with a QRISK3 ≥ 10% or CIMT of ≥ 75 percentile of the general population were categorised as HCVR. Predictors of HCVR were determined by logistic regression. HCVR was detected in 39 (34.2%) of the patients. After adjusting for all the factors, sarcopenia (aOR-15.83; 95% CI 1.16-215.48; p = 0.038) and presence of any traditional CV comorbidity (aOR: 18.97; 95% CI 1.63-221.29; p = 0.019) were associated with HCVR. nPsA-SpA had a 97% lesser chance of having HCVR as compared to PsA. The ROC curve analysis for the multiple logistic regression model which estimated the AUC as 0.787 (95% CI 0.701-0.874) and a P value < 0.001. Adipokine levels correlated well with body composition, but not with HCVR. PsA has a higher CV risk and the mechanisms for the same are poorly understood. Sarcopenia is an important determinant of HCVR and may be due to ectopic adipose tissue deposition in skeletal muscles. Focused physical therapy to prevent sarcopenia, optimum treatment of traditional CV risk factors and adequate disease control may help in preventing atherosclerosis in SpA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Loss of skeletal muscle mass is a characteristic of aging. Growing evidence suggests the role of fatty acids and their derived lipid intermediates in the regulation of skeletal muscle and function. However, the exact association between lipoprotein subfractions and sarcopenia in elderly individuals remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the levels of lipoprotein subfractions in sarcopenia patients and their relationship with skeletal muscle mass and function. METHODS A total of 84 elderly Chinese subjects aged ≥65 years who did not have diseases that obviously affected lipid metabolism were included. Concentrations of lipoprotein subfractions, including total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), HDL2, HDL3, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL), VLDL3, LDL-particle (LDL-P), lipoprotein(a) and remnant-like particle cholesterol (RLP-C), were determined by vertical auto profile. Triglyceride (TG) was measured by an enzymatic colorimetric assay. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Handgrip strength was measured using a hand-held dynamometer. RESULTS The levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, LDL-P, IDL, VLDL, VLDL3, RLP-C and C-reactive protein were significantly higher in sarcopenia patients than in controls (p < 0.05). Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient analysis showed that the TC, TG, LDL-C, IDL, VLDL, VLDL3, and RLP-C levels were negatively associated with the SMI; The TG, IDL, VLDL, VLDL3, and RLP-C were negatively correlated with handgrip strength. In multivariate stepwise regression analysis, the VLDL and RLP-C levels were significantly correlated with the SMI. The sensitivity and specificity of the combined measurement of VLDL and RLP-C in predicting sarcopenia were 69.8% and 92.5% (AUC: 0.831; 95% CI:(0.739, 0.924); p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The occurrence of sarcopenia is associated with disorders of lipid metabolism, particularly VLDL and RLP-C.

Abstract
Purpose A genome-wide association study (GWAS) of sarcopenia unraveled the importance of genetic contribution to decline in muscle. The current study investigated sarcopenia-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Asian older adults, and further constructed a genotype score that tests the combined effect of these SNPs on risk of sarcopenia. Patients and Methods Ninety-six subjects aged 60 or above were recruited from the database of annual geriatric health examination at Tri-Service General Hospital during 2020. Eligible criteria included: 1) not having severe comorbidities; 2) agreed to join the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative project; and 3) having sufficient information of required sarcopenic measurements. Genotype–phenotype association analysis was performed to find SNPs that were significantly associated with each of three sarcopenic indices (low muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance). Subsequently, these SNPs comprised a sarcopenia-related genotype score that summed up the number of SNPs carrying unfavorable allele(s). Results Twelve SNPs revealed suggestive genome-wide significance with the three sarcopenic indices, and eight of them revealed a relationship with more than one index. Low muscle strength was the item that had the most (eight) related SNPs. Among them, rs10282247 affects cholesterol binding and rs7022373 participates in cellular apoptosis. In addition, higher genotype score demonstrated higher risk of sarcopenia (≥4 points: OR=630.6; 2–3 points: OR=408, p-value<0.001). Conclusion Several newly discovered SNPs suggest that genetic contribution plays a part in the pathogenesis of sarcopenia. Further studies are warranted to verify the underlying mechanisms. Moreover, a genotype score provides an estimate of the combined effect of genetic association with sarcopenia, which may modestly improve clinical risk classification.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle is a major organ of insulin-induced glucose metabolism. In addition, loss of muscle mass is closely linked to insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (Met-S). Skeletal muscle loss and accumulation of intramuscular fat are associated with a variety of pathologies through a combination of factors, including oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, mitochondrial dysfunction, IR, and inactivity. Sarcopenia, defined by a loss of muscle mass and a decline in muscle quality and muscle function, is common in the elderly and is also often seen in patients with acute or chronic muscle-wasting diseases. The relationship between Met-S and sarcopenia has been attracting a great deal of attention these days. Persistent inflammation, fat deposition, and IR are thought to play a complex role in the association between Met-S and sarcopenia. Met-S and sarcopenia adversely affect QOL and contribute to increased frailty, weakness, dependence, and morbidity and mortality. Patients with Met-S and sarcopenia at the same time have a higher risk of several adverse health events than those with either Met-S or sarcopenia. Met-S can also be associated with sarcopenic obesity. In this review, the relationship between Met-S and sarcopenia will be outlined from the viewpoints of molecular mechanism and clinical impact.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of sarcopenia and body composition change during primary treatment on survival outcomes in patients with early cervical cancer. We retrospectively identified patients diagnosed with 2009 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IB1-IIA2 cervical cancer who underwent primary radical hysterectomy between 2007 and 2019. From pre-treatment CT scans (n = 306), the skeletal muscle area at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) and the waist skeletal muscle volume were measured using an artificial intelligence-based tool. These values were converted to the L3 and volumetric skeletal muscle indices by normalization. We defined L3 and volumetric sarcopenia using 39.0 cm2/m2 and the first quartile (Q1) value, respectively. From pre- and post-treatment CT scan images (n = 192), changes (%) in waist skeletal muscle and fat volumes were assessed. With the use of Cox regression models, factors associated with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed. Between the L3 sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups, no differences in PFS and OS were observed. In contrast, volumetric sarcopenia was identified as a poor prognostic factor for PFS (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.874; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.028-3.416; p = 0.040) and OS (aHR, 3.001; 95% CI, 1.016-8.869; p = 0.047). During primary treatment, significant decreases in waist skeletal muscle (median, -3.9%; p < 0.001) and total fat (median, -5.3%; p < 0.001) were observed. Of the two components, multivariate analysis revealed that the waist fat gain was associated with worse PFS (aHR, 2.007; 95% CI, 1.009-3.993; p = 0.047). The coexistence of baseline volumetric sarcopenia and waist fat gain further deteriorated PFS (aHR, 2.853; 95% CI, 1.257-6.474; p = 0.012). In conclusion, baseline volumetric sarcopenia might be associated with poor survival outcomes in patients with early cervical cancer undergoing primary RH. Furthermore, sarcopenia patients who gained waist fat during primary treatment were at a high risk of disease recurrence.

Abstract
Aims Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a global health problem associated with an increased risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Body composition parameters, including obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia contribute to the development of MS and CVD. Previous studies have investigated the association of individual body composition parameters with MS. Studies analyzing the association between multiple body composition parameters and MS have been rare. We aimed to investigate the association between MS and multiple body composition parameters, including obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia. Methods A total of 13,620 subjects who underwent voluntary routine checkups at the Health Care Center of our institution between October 2014 and December 2019 were enrolled. Only data from the first examination of subjects who underwent repeated checkups were included. Clinical and laboratory data were collected. Skeletal muscle mass and visceral fat area (VFA) were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was divided by body weight (in kg) and expressed as a percentage (calculated as, ASM% = ASM × 100/Weight). Data were compared between the groups based on obesity, VFA, and ASM%. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the risk of MS in each group. Results Body mass index and VFA were significantly higher in subjects with MS than in those without MS. ASM% was significantly lower in subjects with MS than in those without MS. Subjects with obesity, visceral adiposity, or sarcopenia had a higher prevalence of MS than those without. As the number of metabolic components increased from 0 to 5, we identified a decreasing trend of ASM% and an increasing trend of VFA and BMI (P for trend < 0.001 for all). In the paired analyses, all the three body composition parameters showed additive effects in predicting MS. In the logistic regression analysis, the three parameters were associated with an increased risk of MS after adjustment for age, sex, hypertension, DM, dyslipidemia, smoking, alcohol intake, and C-reactive protein. Conclusions Obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia showed additive effects on MS prediction. Subjects with obesity, visceral adiposity, or sarcopenia were significantly associated with the increased risk of MS after adjustment for multiple confounders. Increasing skeletal muscle and reducing visceral fat may be strategies for the prevention or treatment of MS.

Abstract
Muscular dysfunction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can affect the quality of life and comorbidities. We enrolled 320 patients with RA, and evaluated their muscle mass, grip strength, and physical performance. Seven (2.2%) and 21 RA patients (6.6%) had sarcopenia, as defined by the European and Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (EWGS and AWGS), respectively; 54 patients (16.9%) were determined to have low muscle mass with normal muscle function, as defined by the EWGS; 38 patients (11.9%) reported sarcopenia by SARC-F questionnaire. Male sex (odds ratio (OR) 140.65), low body mass index (BMI) (OR 0.41), and use of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors (OR 4.84) were associated with a low muscle mass as defined by the EWGS, while male sex, old age, and low BMI were associated with sarcopenia as defined by the AWGS. Old age (OR 1.11), high BMI (OR 1.13), and a high Disease Activity Score 28 (OR 1.95) were associated with sarcopenia as reported on the SARC-F. Male, low BMI, and use of TNF inhibitors were associated with a low muscle mass, while male sex, old age, and low BMI were associated with sarcopenia in patients with long-standing RA.
