Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most challenging and persistent dental complaints characterized by transient, intense pain triggered by various stimuli. It affects a significant portion of the global population, predominantly those aged 20-40. This study aims to evaluate the desensitizing efficacy of seventh-generation dentin bonding agents (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) against a control group using Bifluorid 12 by Voco in mitigating DH within a month of the follow-up period. METHODS This was a single-center, parallel-group, double-blind, controlled randomized clinical trial conducted at Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 105 patients with DH were allocated into three groups for this study. The patients were divided into three groups (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) and the control group containing fluoride varnish (Bifluorid 12 by Voco). Discomfort Interval Scale scores and Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale scores were recorded at baseline, immediately after the intervention, after 01 weeks, and after 01 month. RESULTS All the materials demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in discomfort and sensitivity (DIS scores p-value 0.01) immediately after 01 week and over a period of 01 month after treatment compared with the baseline scores before application, with no single material proving superior over the one-month observation period. The study also provided insights into dental hygiene practices, with a significant majority using a toothbrush and sensitivity patterns, with cold stimuli being the most common cause of sensitivity. CONCLUSION The study demonstrates that Single Bond Universal, Xeno V+, and Bifluorid 12 are equally effective in reducing dentin hypersensitivity, with no distinct superiority observed over a one-month period. The findings highlight the potential of fluoride varnishes as a less technique-sensitive and cost-effective option for treating DH, offering valuable insights for future research and clinical practice. Abstract
Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a prevalent dental condition arising from the exposure of dentin tubules (DTs), leading to discomfort upon external stimuli. However, achieving swift and profound occlusion of these exposed DTs for immediate and enduring relief remains challenging due to the intricate dentin structure and oral environment. Herein, a pioneering and facile drop-by-drop strategy involving an in situ generated natural supramolecular hydrogel formed by self-assembling silk fibroin (SF) and tannic acid (TA) within the narrow DT space is proposed. When SF and TA aqueous solutions are applied successively to exposed dentin, they penetrate deeply within DTs and coassemble into compact gels, robustly adhering to DT walls. This yields a rapid and compact occlusion effect with an unprecedented depth exceeding 250 µm, maintaining stable occlusion efficacy even under rigorous in vitro and in vivo erosion and friction conditions for no less than 21 days. Furthermore, the biocompatibility and effective occlusion properties are verified through cell studies in simulated oral settings and an in vivo rabbit model. This study, for the first time, demonstrates the translational potential of hydrogel-based desensitizers in treating DH with prompt action, superior occlusion depth and enduring treatment benefits, holding promise as clinical-friendly restorative solutions for delicate-structured biosystems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) in older adults by analyzing each lesion's morphology, dimension, and occlusal risk factors using intraoral scanning and clinical evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Individuals over 60 treated at the School of Dentistry in Minas Gerais, Brazil, were invited to participate in this cross-sectional study. We clinically evaluated 1245 teeth for the presence of NCCL and dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in 53 individuals. Three-dimensional models were obtained using Omnicam, and occlusal risk factors were evaluated through the presence of wear facets, intense occlusal contacts, and interferences. The 3Shape 3DViewer software was used to classify NCCL morphology and to measure their height. NCCL depth, width, and area measurements were determined using ImageJ. Descriptive analyses were performed. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that quantitative data exhibited non-normal distribution. For bivariate analyses of quantitative data, the Mann-Whitney test was employed. The results were reported with mean, standard deviation, median, minimum, and maximum. For bivariate analyses of categorical data, the Pearson chi-square test was used. The results were reported with frequencies (counts) and percentages. A regression model evaluating the association between occlusal risk factors and the absence/presence of NCCL was built. RESULTS Most participants were female (58.5%), with a mean age of 66. The frequency of NCCL was 28.27%, corresponding to 352 teeth. Of these, 68.18% exhibited saucer morphology and 31.82% wedge-shaped morphology. The frequency of DH was 13.92% in teeth with NCCL. Saucer NCCL exhibited significantly greater height (p = 0.02), while wedge-shaped lesions showed greater depth (p < 0.001). Also, teeth with NCCL had a higher proportion of wear facets (66.8%; p < 0.001), intense occlusal contacts (39.8%; p = 0.008), and occlusal interferences (21.9%; p = 0.05). The regression model showed that teeth with wear facets were 1.50 times more likely to exhibit NCCL than teeth without wear facets (p < 0.001). Teeth with intense occlusal contact were 1.22 times more likely to exhibit NCCL than teeth without intense occlusal contact (p = 0.031). CONCLUSIONS NCCL is a common dental condition in the older adults evaluated in this study. Wedge-shaped NCCL exhibited greater depth, while saucer NCCL had more expressive height. Occlusal risk factors may represent a crucial mechanism for the occurrence of NCCL in this population. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Understanding the mechanisms involved in developing NCCL is helpful in diagnostic and preventive practices. The study showed the importance of dental occlusion and characteristics of different NCCL morphologies that help the clinician in decision-making.

Abstract
There are two main methods used for dentin hypersensitivity (DH) treatment: dentinal tubule occlusion and blockage of nerve activity. Dentifrices are the most common vehicles for active ingredients used for DH treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of three toothpastes on dentinal tubule occlusion, mineral acquisition, and dentin hardness. Forty human dentin disks were submerged in 40% citric acid for 30 s and then exposed to tooth brushing for 2 min twice a day for 14 days using three toothpastes: Dontodent Sensitive (group 1), Dr. Wolff's Biorepair (group 2), and Sensodyne Repair and Protect (group 3). In the control group (group 4), the samples were brushed with water. All of the samples were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Vickers dentin hardness determination. On SEM images, the degree of dentinal tubule occlusion was assessed using a five-grade scale. The mean score values in groups 1-4 were 3.60 ± 0.69, 2.20 ± 0.91, 2.30 ± 1.16, and 5.00 ± 0.00, significantly higher in study groups when compared to the control group (Kruskal Wallis test p < 0.05). EDX evaluation showed significantly higher calcium and phosphorus concentrations in groups 1 and 3 when compared to control group d. The mean values of Vickers dentin hardness numbers in groups 1-4 were 243.03 ± 10.014, 327.38 ± 56.65, 260.29 ± 37.69, and 225.83 ± 29.93, respectively. No statistically significant results were obtained when comparing the hardness mean values in groups (Kruskal-Wallis statistical test, p = 0.372 > 0.05). All three toothpastes tested demonstrated significant occlusion of dentinal tubules. Dontodent Sensitive and Sensodyne Repair and Protect toothpastes enhanced the calcium and phosphorus content of the dentin surface. None of the toothpastes increased dentin hardness as a result of mineral acquisition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic review with network meta-analysis synthesises available randomised controlled trials evidence concerning efficacy of self-administered dentifrices for management of dentine hypersensitivity (DH) pain. STUDY SELECTION Following systematic review registration (CRD42019154064), three data bases (MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL) were searched to December 2022 for parallel randomised controlled trials conducted in adults diagnosed with DH, using at least two recognised stimuli, assessing the short-term efficacy of home-use dentifrice treatment in reducing pain. Thirty-two studies and 4,638 participants were included. A Network meta-analysis (NMA) approach was used to compare relative effectiveness between interventions. CONCLUSIONS Twice daily application of self-applied dentifrice containing formulations of stannous, potassium +/- stannous, or arginine can be recommended for the reduction of dentine hypersensitivity pain. There is a need for standardised methodology guideline development to improve the conduct, analysis and reporting of DH clinical studies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This is the first comprehensive NMA to be performed, that follows guidelines for conduct of DH trials to determine the efficacy of self-applied dentifrices for the management of dentine hypersensitivity. Indirect comparisons can be made between formulations that have not been compared to one another in randomised controlled trials.

Abstract
Background Dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) is a common clinical finding that varies greatly in prevalence. An appropriate impulse that detonates noxious stimuli in the pulp/dentin boundary causes the typical DH pain, which is sudden, short, sharp, and of rapid onset. The objective of this research was to ascertain the incidence of DH in Keralites and evaluate some contributory factors, along with other initiating stimuli. Methodology Over three months, from June 2022 to August 2022, a cluster sampling technique was employed to conduct the study in 14 districts of Kerala. Patients from five clinics from each district who reported having DH and were aged 25 to 65 years were chosen at random. Using Google Survey forms, a 20-question, closed-ended survey was mailed to patients. The data were collected, evaluated, and analyzed using SPSS Version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The statistical difference in the distribution of DH and the patient's age was determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). A chi-square test was carried out to test the association between dentinal hypersensitivity, gender, and other parameters; P < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results Among the 2,520 persons to whom questionnaires were mailed, 2,321 responded, with an unresponsive rate of 7.89%. The study revealed a sensitivity predilection among females (54%), although statistically insignificant. Respondents aged 25 to 35 years (41.01%) were commonly reported to have DH, the age distribution of which was found to be highly significant statistically (P < 0.01). Teeth whitening resulted in 82.98% of the sensitivity, whereas 47.99% accepted poor oral hygiene as an additional contributory factor. DH was reported in 52.01% of the patients with gastritis and 63.03% of the patients with gingival recession. Further, blame for poor dental treatment (88.88%) and climate change (82.92%) were also found relevant. The quality of life was claimed to be afflicted in 90.99% of the patients. Desensitizing agents were used by 68.97% of the patients, with which 68.03% reported satisfaction. Of the subjects who underwent professional treatment, 87.03% reported being satisfied. Oral prophylaxis-induced sensitivity was reported in 57.99%, indicating enhanced oral health awareness among Kerala residents. There was a statistically highly significant difference in the patient distribution based on the exposure to DH, and their perception of the causes and factors affecting DH (P < 0.01). Conclusions DH is a frequently and widely prevalent dental malady. Respondents demonstrated that they were conversant with DH. The quality of life and enjoyment of daily activities are both impacted by dentin hypersensitivity, and many patients are unaware that it is a treatable illness. Various desensitizing substances are also available and can be applied quickly to sensitive areas. Patients prefer this procedure as it is simpler to apply these agents and the effects are pleasant and beneficial.

Abstract
Objective: This study purposed to estimate the prevalence of DH and how effective the etiological factors are in the development of DH in Turkey.
Methods: Demographic features, hygiene habits, bruxism, beverage habits, parafunctional habits, smoking, and other medical problems were asked. Air was blasted to the teeth via the air-water syringe for 3 seconds. The Visual Analogue Scale was used to measure DH sensitivity, and data were recorded in the 0-100 mm range, and 5 mm and higher were considered DH. The attrition, abrasion, erosion, abfraction per dental type (Incisal OR Canine OR Premolar OR Molar) were recorded. The same procedure was applied for abnormal tooth position and gingival recession.
Results: A total of 4476 teeth and 236 individuals were evaluated. Significantly higher DH frequency was observed in females (p= .034), the 40- 55 age range (p= .009), and non-smokers (p= .016). Those who brushed their teeth three times a day or more (p< .001), preferred horizontal technique (p= .017), used toothbrushes with a hard bristle (p< .001) exhibited higher DH frequency. There was no significant difference in DH regarding bruxism, acidic beverage consumption, vomiting, and reflux (p> .05).
Conclusion: DH is a multi-etiological symptom affected by demographic attributes, hygiene, and other habits. Clinicians should painstakingly distinguish the source of DH to gain the long-term success of DH treatment, which depends on many etiological factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare two cohorts of 75-year-old persons, born 10 years apart, in regard to reported symptoms related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and orofacial complaints with special reference to gender differences. MATERIAL AND METHODS In 2007, a questionnaire comprising questions on social factors, general and oral health, and a series of attitude-related questions was mailed to all individuals born in 1932 living in two Swedish counties (N = 5195), and in 2017 to all born in 1942 (N = 7204). The response rate for the cohort examined in 2007 was 71.9% (n = 3735) and 70.7% (n = 5091) for the cohort examined in 2017. Bivariate statistical analyses were applied. RESULTS Reported bruxism and pain from the temporomandibular joint were significantly higher in the 1942 cohort compared to the 1932 cohort, while reports of oral lesions and daytime dry mouth were lower. Women reported problems significantly more frequently in most of the domains investigated in both 2007 and 2017, that is, TMD, burning mouth, sensitive teeth, oral lesions, taste changes, daytime/night-time dry mouth, except bad breath. CONCLUSIONS TMD-related symptoms increased while complaints from oral lesions and daytime mouth dryness decreased between 2007 and 2017. Temporal changes were otherwise few, but the findings underline the gender inequalities that exist, to the disadvantage of women. This must be considered when planning for clinical care/dental education to appropriately address the needs of older people.

Abstract
Recently, the development of dental materials has increased the availability of various hyperesthesia desensitizers. However, there are no studies on the duration of retreatment in terms of adherence rates. Thus, the adhesion rates of resin-based desensitizers were investigated. We used a conventional desensitizer and a recently developed desensitizer containing calcium salt of 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitic acid (C-MET) and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen calcium phosphate (MDCP). These colored agents were applied to the surfaces of premolars and molars, and the area was measured from weekly oral photographs. Areas were statistically analyzed and mean values were calculated using 95% confidence intervals. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. These rates were significantly higher on the buccal side of the maxilla and lower on the lingual side of the maxilla. In addition, the desensitizer containing C-MET and MDCP displayed significantly higher adhesion rates. It is suggested that this will require monthly follow-ups and reevaluation because both agents cause less than 10% adherence and there is almost no sealing effect after 4 weeks. In addition, the significantly higher adhesion rate of the desensitizer containing C-MET and MDCP indicated that the novel monomer contributed to the improvement in the adhesion ability.

Abstract
Background:
Objective: The objective of this narrative review is to present an overview of dentin hypersensitivity and of the prevalence, etiology, mechanism, diagnosis, and clinical management.
Methods:
Available articles (research, reviews, commentary, views, or editorial) on hypersensitivity were searched and reviewed from January 1990 till March 2021 in Pubmed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. Relevant studies in English were included and critically analyzed in this article.
Results:
Dentin hypersensitivity causes severe pain. The most effective and least invasive remedy is using desensitizing toothpaste. In addition, based on the dentin hypersensitivity severity, management can be done professionally in-office and through self-applied at-home treatments.
Conclusion:
Although dentin hypersensitivity causes severe pain, it can be treated using a proper remedy. Correct diagnosis helps in the proper management of dentine hypersensitivity.
Management of dentinal hypersensitivity should be done with more conservative strategies first, followed by irreversible dental interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cracked teeth may be associated with pain, especially biting pain, and to a lesser degree cold and spontaneous pain. Described are how commonly these pains remain constant, develop, or resolve over time, none of which have been well-described, especially among untreated cracked teeth. METHODS Cracked teeth from the Cracked Tooth Registry (CTR) study were followed for 3 years. Assessments of cold, biting, and spontaneous pain and treatments performed were completed at enrollment (Y0) and at each annual recall visit. RESULTS 209 practitioners enrolled 2,858 patients, each with a visible crack on a posterior tooth; 2601 (91%) patients attended at least one recall visit. Overall, 960 (37%) were treated, primarily with crowns. Among both treated and untreated cracked teeth with biting pain or spontaneous pain at Y0, the vast majority (92-99%) had their pain resolved by the time of a recall visit and 85-93% remained pain-free after initial resolution. The observations for cold pain were similar: 68% (untreated) and 78% (treated) became free of cold pain at some point during follow-up, and 84% of these stayed free of cold pain after initial resolution. Few teeth developed biting or spontaneous pain (4-8%) and 44-67% of these had pain resolution during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION In this study, treatment resolved a preponderance of pain associated with a cracked tooth. Pain was also resolved for most untreated cracked teeth, especially biting pain, and to a lesser degree spontaneous and cold pain, although not to the same degree as with the treated cracked teeth.

Abstract
Germany's 2030-oral health agenda incorporates behavioral targets such as twice-daily toothbrushing and routine dental check-ups. Given the professional and social roles of dentists in oral health promotion, the oral health-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) of dentists and dental students became worth investigation. The present study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional study that aimed to evaluate oral health KAB of German dental students using the Hiroshima University - Dental Behavioral Inventory (HU-DBI). A total of 508 dental students filled in the questionnaire, out of which 74.2% were females, 38.8% were clinical students, 11.4% reported tobacco smoking at least once week, 26.6% reported drinking alcohol at least once a week, and 82.9% reported suffering from problematic internet use. The overall HU-DBI score was high (7.67 ± 1.32), and it was slightly higher among females (7.70 ± 1.33) than males (7.59 ± 1.29), and gender-diverse students (7.33 ± 1.37). Clinical students (7.88 ± 1.26) had a significantly higher HU-DBI score, especially in the domain of oral health behaviors, compared with preclinical students (7.53 ± 1.34). A significant improvement in oral health behaviors and HU-DBI score was found between the third- vs. the fourth year, which corresponds to the period when prophylaxis, hygiene, and periodontology courses are delivered. Tobacco smoking was significantly associated with poor oral health knowledge, behaviors, and overall HU-DBI score. Problematic internet use and alcohol drinking had slightly lower HU-DBI scores. The findings of the present study call for early implementation of preventive dentistry elements in German curricula and addressing oral health needs of gender minorities in Germany by future epidemiologic studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and predisposing and etiologic factors of dentin hypersensitivity (DH), as well as the demographic characteristics of patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The 1210 patients were examined. The research was based on a two-step investigation: questionnaire and clinical examination. DH was evaluated by the response of the patient to tactile and air-blast stimuli. Loss of attachment and gingival recession of sensitive teeth was measured on the buccal and lingual surfaces. Also, the tooth wear of sensitive teeth was graded on the buccal and lingual surfaces. Comparisons of nonnormally distributed continuous variables were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Dunn's post hoc test. Comparisons of categorical variables were performed using Pearson's chi-square, Fisher's exact chi-square, Yates's chi-square, and the Monte Carlo chi-square test. RESULTS One hundred twenty-four patients reported DH, showing a prevalence for self-reported DH of 10.2%. Eight hundred forty teeth were diagnosed as having DH, giving a clinical diagnosis rate of DH of 29.4%. Females (76.8%), the 31-40 years age group (26%), housewives (36.8%), and high school education level (38%) had the highest prevalence of DH as demographic properties. A cold stimulus was the most common stimuli trigger for hypersensitivity (97.1%). Occasional pain (55.5%) showed the highest prevalence in terms of frequency of DH. A higher rate of DH was found with the use of medium brushes (47.4%) and brushing twice per day (59.4%) for 1-2 min (56.2%) with the circular method (33.8%) as oral hygiene habits. The buccal surface of the lower right central incisors (5.7%) had the highest prevalence. The most affected teeth by DH were incisors (38.4%). The buccal surfaces (86.3%) of teeth showed a higher high prevalence of DH compared with the lingual surface (52.7%), similar to gingival recession (40.9% vs. 15.7%) and loss of attachment (68.3% vs. 42.6%). CONCLUSIONS Clinically diagnosed DH was more common than self-reported DH. Some factors related to patients such as sex (female), the 31-40 years age group, housewives, high school students, using medium brushes, brushing twice per day, and the circular brushing method were more likely to have a risk for DH. Also, buccal surfaces of teeth, gingival recession, and loss of attachment on the buccal surface of teeth should be considered as predisposing factors for DH. CLINICAL RELEVANCE To control and prevent DH, clinicians should consider patients' demographics, predisposing factors, and etiologic factors.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the effectiveness of MI Paste® in reducing sensitivity associated with vital tooth bleaching. Methods This randomized controlled split-mouth clinical trial included 45 subjects that were randomly divided into two groups. In Group 1, the maxillary arch was the control arch (only bleaching), while the mandibular arch was the intervention arch (bleaching and MI Paste®). In Group 2, the mandibular arch was the control arch (only bleaching), while the maxillary arch was the intervention arch (bleaching and MI Paste®). Subjects started with the control arch and then switched to the intervention arch after two weeks. Subjects were instructed to use MI Paste® in a custom tray for 5 minutes, wait for 1 hour, and then bleach overnight using a different tray. Sensitivity was measured using both a thermal sensitivity test and a daily log of sensitivity for 14 days. Shade was evaluated using a colorimeter and a shade guide. Results Immediately after treatment, the thermal test sensitivity scores for the arches bleached without MI Paste® were greater than those with MI Paste® (p=0.011). Arches not receiving the MI Paste® treatment showed significantly higher VAS sensitivity scores during the 14-day period of bleaching (p=0.002). The mean score for the 14-day period was 37.9 for the arches not treated with MI Paste® versus 27.5 for the treated arches. Both the intervention group and the control group showed significantly lighter shade relative to baseline (p < 0.001) with no significant difference between them (p=0.42). Conclusion MI Paste® significantly reduced the sensitivity associated with bleaching and did not interfere with shade change.

Abstract
Background Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is defined as an exaggerated sensitivity of vital dentin exposed to thermal, chemical and tactile stimuli. This study aimed to evaluate, through a literature review, the applicability of high- and low-intensity lasers in the treatment of DH for the past 10 years, as well as its therapeutic potential.
Material and Methods The electronic databases MEDLINE/PubMed and LILACS were searched using the descriptors (“Dentin Sensitivity” OR “Dentin Hypersensitivity”) AND (“Low-Level Therapy” OR Laser), for articles published between 2010 and 2020. Only randomized clinical trials with full-text and full case resolution were included.
Results We found 187 articles in total, among which 61 were pre-selected and 10 included in this literature review.
Conclusions Considering the found results and their possible limitations, high- and low-intensity lasers, associated or not with other therapies, have demonstrated beneficial effects in the treatment of DH, being considered a promising, safe, easy, and effective field of research, reducing pain sensitivity and preserving pulp vitality. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess whether orthodontic debonding and onset of tooth sensitivity were related and if anterior and posterior teeth showed different sensitivity. MATERIALS AND METHODS 40 patients were divided into a trial group (group 1, at the end of the multibracket treatment) and a control group (group 2, not under treatment). After the application of compressed air and cold water to mandibular incisors and first molars, participants were asked to report the pain felt for each tooth using a 100-mm visual analogue scale. In group 1, assessment was performed just before debonding (T0), immediately after completion of debonding (T1) and 7 days after (T2). In group 2, values were assessed at the beginning of a follow-up visit (T0), at the end of the same visit (T1) and 7 days after (T2). RESULTS Considering overall teeth, statistical analyses showed significantly higher values in the trial group at T1 after both stimuli, especially after cold water, besides a significant difference between T0 and T2 values in the same group. Anterior teeth showed significantly higher VAS scores than posterior after the two thermal stimuli, except after air stimulation in group 1 at T2 and in group 2. CONCLUSIONS Orthodontic debonding leads to sensitivity to thermal stimuli especially in the anterior teeth, however pain level is restored within 7 days.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction The non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) is currently a common oral disease. Objective This observational and descriptive study aimed to assess risk factors associated with non-carious cervical lesions, cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH), gingival recession (GR) and the relationship between these conditions in students in the last years of undergraduate dentistry. Material and method One hundred eighty-five dentistry students from a private college in Ceará with an average of 22.7 ± 2.3 years participated by filling out a google docs form. Two calibrated examiners performed the exams to verify the presence of NCCL, CDH and RG. Result The presence of NCCL was 22.7%, GR was 48.1% and cervical dentin hypersensitivity 8.6%. The chi-square test with p < 0.05% verified a correlation between the presence of NCCL and the presence of GR and CDH. 25% of students had NCCL and 14% considered themselves stressed. There was no association between the variables bruxism and stress (p=0.529), bruxism and year of graduation course (p=0.716), as well as no association between stress and year of course (p = 0.397) was observed. There were no correlations between NCCL and bruxism, muscle symptoms, parafunctional habits and temporomandibular dysfunction. 10.8% of students who reported using legal and illegal drugs had NCCL. Conclusion The NCCL, GR and CDH were correlated in the group of students in the last two years of an undergraduate dentistry course in Ceará.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of different protocols for the treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). MATERIALS AND METHODS The CONSORT checklist was used to design this study. The sample with n = 74 participants (389 NCCLs) was randomly allocated into three groups: G1, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF); G2, GaAlAs (gallium-aluminum-arsenate) low-power laser (100 mW, 808nn, 60 J/cm2); and G3, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF) associated with the GaAlAs low-power laser. The CDH was triggered by the evaporative stimulus test (EST) and by the tactile stimulus test (TST). The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to quantify the degree of CDH. Changes in sensitivity were assessed from baseline over 3 weeks. Data were analyzed for NCCLs using mixed-effects models with unstructured direct product covariance structure (α = 0.05). RESULTS After the first application, participants from G1 and G3 had a reduction in CDH (p < 0.05) compared with group G2 for TST. After the second application, G3 participants had a reduction in CDH (p < 0.05) in relation to G2 for both stimuli. Reduction in CDH (p < 0.05) occurred over 3 weeks for EST and TST for all groups; however, there was no difference between groups at the end of the therapies. CONCLUSION Potassium oxalate was more effective in reducing immediate CDH. After four applications, all groups showed similar results for the reduction of CDH. CLINICAL RELEVANCE GaAlAS laser irradiation and oxalate potassium gel could reduce the symptoms of CDH; thus, they are viable alternatives for the treatment of this condition. Chemical occlusion of dental tubules showed effective results after a shorter time interval. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the effects of a stannous fluoride dentifrice and a sodium fluoride dentifrice on dentinal hypersensitivity when used with an oxalate-based regimen combining in-office and at-home treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this single-center, randomized, controlled, double-blind, pilot clinical trial, 30 subjects were professionally treated at baseline with a 3% oxalate/potassium salt solution on up to two target teeth, then randomized 1:1 to either 0.454% stannous fluoride or 0.243% sodium fluoride overlabeled dentifrice. Both groups were given 6 sensitivity strips (3.14% potassium oxalate gel) and a soft, manual toothbrush. Subjects were permitted to apply strips on up to two teeth, up to three times per tooth, at home as desired throughout the study. Dentinal sensitivity (cold air blast challenge) was assessed at baseline, immediately after post-professional treatment, and at day 60 using the Schiff scale and a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). RESULTS Immediately after professional oxalate treatment, the overall mean Schiff and VAS score decreased 25.6% and 22.4% from baseline, respectively (p ≤ 0.001 for both). At day 60, further reductions in both mean scores were seen in both groups. There were no significant differences between the groups at day 60. All treatments were well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS In subjects treated with oxalates for dentinal hypersensitivity, both stannous fluoride and sodium fluoride dentifrices are well tolerated, are feasible for routine use, and do not detract from the desensitizing effects of an in-office and at-home oxalate combination treatment regimen. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Either stannous fluoride or sodium fluoride dentifrices can be recommended to dentinal hypersensitivity patients who undergo professional oxalate treatment.

Abstract
Though dentin hypersensitivity (DHS) is one of the most common complaints from patients in dental clinics, there are no universally accepted guidelines for differential diagnosis as well as selection of reliable treatment modalities for this condition. The neurosensory mechanisms underlying DHS remain unclear, but fluid movements within exposed dentinal tubules, i.e., the hydrodynamic theory, has been a widely accepted explanation for DHS pain. As several dental conditions have symptoms that mimic DHS at different stages of their progression, diagnosis and treatment of DHS are often confusing, especially for inexperienced dental practitioners. In this paper we provide an up-to-date review on risk factors that play a role in the development and chronicity of DHS and summarize the current principles and strategies for differential diagnosis and management of DHS in dental practices. We will outline the etiology, predisposing factors and the underlying putative mechanisms of DHS, and provide principles and indications for its diagnosis and management. Though desensitization remains to be the first choice for DHS for many dental practitioners and most of desensitizing agents reduce the symptoms of DHS by occluding patent dentinal tubules, the long-term outcome of such treatment is uncertain. With improved understanding of the underlying nociceptive mechanisms of DHS, it is expected that promising novel therapies will emerge and provide more effective relief for patients with DHS.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to compare the sensitivity and specificity of pain scales used to assess dentin hypersensitivity (DH). The preferred scale, and toothbrushing habits of participants were also investigated. This cross-sectional study was conducted with students and employees of a Brazilian Federal University who presented DH. The participants answered a questionnaire about their toothbrushing and drinking habits. Hypersensitive and non-sensitive teeth were submitted to tactile and ice stick stimuli. Then, the subjects marked their pain level in the visual analogue (VAS), numeric scale (NS), faces pain scale (FPS) and verbal evaluation scale (VES). DH was also assessed by Schiff scale (SS). The data were analyzed by Wilcoxon and Chi-Square tests, as well as by ROC curve. The mean age of the sample (56 women, 16 men) was 27.8 years. The most prevalent acidic beverage was coffee (36.0%) and the most preferred scale was the NS (47.2%). The pain level was statistically higher in teeth with DH compared to teeth without DH (p < 0.05). The accuracy ranged from 0.729 (SS) to 0.750 (NS). The highest sensitivity value was 81.9% for NS. The SS presented the highest specificity (91%). The visual analog, numerical, verbal evaluation, faces pain, and Schiff scales were accurate for DH diagnosis. The Schiff scale was the preferred scale for DH assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the desensitizing effect of toothpaste containing the active ingredients of an extract of Galla chinensis, both in vitro and in patients with dentin hypersensitivity. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety-eight patients with dentin hypersensitivity were divided into two study groups and given toothpaste containing either the active ingredients of Galla chinensis extract and sodium fluoride, or a control toothpaste containing only sodium fluoride. Assessments included the tactile stimulation test and the Schiff cold air sensitivity scale, which were conducted at the baseline examination and after 4 and 8 weeks of dental brushing. Twenty-five intact human premolars from 24 patients with dentin hypersensitivity were prepared and randomly divided into four groups, the untreated baseline group, the study group, the positive control group, and the control group. After brushing with different toothpaste for 7 days, the effects on dentinal tubule sealing in each group was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the degree of dentinal tubule plugging and diameter of the open dentinal tubules were calculated. RESULTS Toothpaste containing the active ingredients of Galla chinensis and sodium fluoride significantly reduced the degree of dentin hypersensitivity when compared with toothpaste containing sodium fluoride alone after 4 weeks and 8 weeks of use. Toothpaste containing the active ingredients of Galla chinensis significantly reduced the number and diameter of the open dentinal tubules. CONCLUSIONS Toothpaste that contained the active ingredients of Galla chinensis and sodium fluoride reduced the symptoms of dentin hypersensitivity by sealing the dentinal tubules.

Abstract
Background Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS), an autosomal dominant rare connective tissue disorder, has multisystemic manifestations, characterised by vascular tortuosity, aneurysms and craniofacial manifestations. Based on the associated gene mutations along the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) pathway, LDS is presently classified into six subtypes. Methods We present the oro-dental features of a cohort of 40 patients with LDS from five subtypes. Results The most common oro-dental manifestations were the presence of a high-arched and narrow palate, and enamel defects. Other common characteristics included bifid uvula, submucous cleft palate, malocclusion, dental crowding and delayed eruption of permanent teeth. Both deciduous and permanent teeth had enamel defects in some individuals. We established a grading system to measure the severity of enamel defects, and we determined that the severity of the enamel anomalies in LDS is subtype-dependent. In specific, patients with TGF-β receptor II mutations (LDS2) presented with the most severe enamel defects, followed by patients with TGF-β receptor I mutations (LDS1). LDS2 patients had higher frequency of oro-dental deformities in general. Across all five subtypes, as well as within each subtype, enamel defects exhibited incomplete penetrance and variable expression, which is not associated with the location of the gene mutations. Conclusion This study describes, in detail, the oro-dental manifestations in a cohort of LDS, and we conclude that LDS2 has the most severely affected phenotype. This extensive characterisation, as well as some identified distinguishing features can significantly aid dental and medical care providers in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients with this rare connective tissue disorder.

Abstract
Aim: Comparison of casein phosphopeptides (CPPs) and amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), tricalcium phosphate, and hydroxyapatite on assessment of dentine tubule occlusion on primary enamel using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Materials and Methods: A total of 20 freshly extracted noncarious primary molars were randomly divided into four groups (A to D) with five sections in each group; group A: negative control, group B: CPP-ACP, group C: tricalcium phosphate, and group D: Hydroxyapatite (HA). To assess tubule occlusion, 20 dentin sections of 2 mm thickness were obtained from cervical third of sound primary molars. Each section were processed to simulate the hypersensitive dentin and the test agents were brushed over the sections with an electric toothbrush and observed under SEM for calculation of the percentage of occluded tubules. Results: Group B and D showed greater percentage of tubule occlusion than group C. Intergroup comparison of tubule occlusion potential of Group B and D was not significant. Conclusion: HA showed significantly higher dentinal tubule occlusion when compared to CPP-ACP and tricalcium phosphate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study reports on the effectiveness of a ball-milled nanosized titanium dioxide composite (EB@TiO2) for DH management in comparison with commercial desensitizing paste with and without saliva. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-nine dentine specimens were prepared from extracted bovine anterior teeth. Twenty-one of the specimens were brushed with three desensitizing toothpaste for 7 days, namely: Group 1; EB@TiO2, Group 2; Colgate Pro-relief; and Group 3; Sensodyne repair (n = 7). Twenty-four specimens were brushed with the toothpaste for 7 days and stored in artificial saliva (control) after brushing. Each specimen was subsequently posttreated in citric acid solution to test its stability in acidic condition. Field scanning electron microscope was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the dentine tubules occlusion. The biocompatibility of the composite was tested using BHK21 cell line. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS One-way analysis of variance was used to analyze the percentage occluded area ratio values for all specimens (α = 0.05). Independent t-test was further used to evaluate the occlusion differences with saliva and without saliva. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The number of dentine tubules decreased significantly after 7 days of brushing. Overall, the occlusion observe for EB@TiO2 were significantly better than for Colgate Pro-relief and Sensodyne repair (p < 0.05). BHK21 assay suggested that composite had no significant effect on the BHK21 cell line. This study demonstrated that the composite effectively occluded open dentine tubules within 7 days of brushing.

Abstract
Objective This randomized controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effect of the casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF) and photobiomodulation (PBM) in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH), and the impact of this on the health-related quality of life (HRQL). Methods Eighty teeth with DH were randomized into four groups and received three treatment sessions: PLACEBO = placebo + LASER application mimicking; CPP-ACPF = CPP-ACPF + LASER application mimicking; PBM = placebo + LASER active application; CPP-ACPF+PBM = CPP-ACPF + LASER active application. Tactile (exploratory probe) and evaporative (triple syringe) stimuli were used to measure DH and were recorded with the aid of a visual analogue scale (VAS) after the 1st, 2nd and 3rd treatment sessions and one-month follow-up. The HRQL was recorded in the DH experience questionnaire (DHEQ). Results The intragroup comparison showed a significant reduction in DH (p < 0.05) with both stimuli after one-month follow-up. The intergroup comparison with the evaporative stimulus showed that CPP-ACPF+PBM significantly reduced DH when compared to the rest of treatments, after one-month follow-up. CPP-ACPF+PBM group statistically differed from the other treatment groups in the DHEQ evaluation after one-month follow-up. Conclusion After one-month follow-up, the association of CPP-ACPF with PBM was effective in the reduction of DH and promoted a positive impact on the HRQL of the participants of this study.

Abstract
Objectives A mathematical model making using of the Verhulst logistic equation was developed to predict the remineralization behaviors of desensitizing paste. Methods The input parameter used for the model was obtained experimentally by brushing twenty-one simulated dentin specimens for seven days with three sample groups, namely, EB@TiO2, Colgate Pro-relief, and Sensodyne repair (n = 7). A field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and ImageJ software were used to observe and measure the % occluded ratio of the dentin surface. The model fittings for the three sample groups were carried out using the built-in MATLAB least-squares fitting routine fmincon in the optimization toolbox. Results The results suggest that the experimental parameter were in agreement with the model. It was found that the logistic equation model can make a future prediction of the remineralization pattern for EB@TiO2 and Colgate Pro-relief. It was, however, found that the trajectory for the Sensodyne repair was a bit complex, thus making the prediction difficult. Conclusions Overall, the salient feature of this study suggests that the logistic equation could be used to predict the remineralization behavior of desensitizing paste in the management of sensitive tooth.

Abstract
Objective
Previous studies have indicated that dentists may be uncertain about the etiology, diagnosis, and effective management of dentine sensitivity/dentine hypersensitivity (DH)
.
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge and understanding of Greece-based dental professionals in treating DH
. Materials and Methods
A 26-item questionnaire was sent to a representative sample of Greek dentists.
Results
Two hundred thirty questionnaires were originally provided to the participants and of the 210 questionnaires that were returned, 191 questionnaires (90 M; 86 F; mean age 36.26 years [standard deviation: 11.34]) were included for analysis, a response rate of 83% was observed. 39.8% of dentists indicated that 1 in 10 of their patients experienced discomfort from DH with 76.4% of dentists indicating that their patients initiated the conversation on DH. In contrast, 44% of the dentists indicated that they initiated the relevant conversation. 34.9% of dentists indicated that the duration of discomfort lasted up to 3 weeks and 76.4% indicated that DH had an impact on their patients’ quality of life. Incorrect tooth brushing was considered to be a major etiological factor (68.6%) with “air blast” (37.3%) and “probing” (15%) as the main methods for identification. 83.6% of dentists indicated that they were confident in recommending over-the-counter products for home use.
Conclusion
The results of this study suggest that in terms of knowledge and understanding of DH, there is still confusion concerning some aspects of the diagnosis and management of the condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare a 3.14% potassium oxalate strip and 8% arginine calcium carbonate toothpaste for the reduction of dentine hypersensitivity after 2 and 4 weeks. METHODS This was an examiner-blind, parallel study in 80 healthy adults with dentine hypersensitivity (Schiff score >2) in >1 tooth. After acclimatisation, participants were randomised to the oxalate desensitising strip with fluoride toothpaste or the arginine desensitising toothpaste control which also contained fluoride. Products were applied under supervision of study staff after measuring baseline sensitivity, thereafter the strip or control toothpaste (fingertip application) was applied after 1 and 2 weeks, and teeth brushed twice-daily with the fluoride (test group) or the fluoridated arginine control toothpaste. Sensitivity was assessed following airblast (Schiff and VAS) and tactile stimuli (Yeaple probe) at baseline, 2 and 4 weeks. RESULTS Both groups showed significant reductions from baseline in VAS, Schiff and Yeaple sensitivity scores after 2 and 4 weeks (p < 0.0005). The oxalate group had significantly lower Schiff and higher Yeaple probe scores compared to control after both time points (p < 0.0002 and p < 0.05), but while scores favoured the oxalate group, there were no significant differences in VAS. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated application of a 3.14% potassium oxalate strip combined with toothbrushing with paste was more effective in pain management of dentine hypersensitivity than brushing with arginine toothpaste. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Treatment of sensitive teeth with the oxalate strip reduced dentine hypersensitivity after 2 and 4 weeks to a significantly greater degree than a positive control sensitivity toothpaste demonstrating that oxalate strips are an effective targeted treatment for dentine hypersensitivity sufferers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify and compare the self-reported and diagnosed prevalence of dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) in an University population; and to verify accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of DH stimuli tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three hundred and eighty patients (67.2% women and 32.8% men) were assessed by questionnaire, clinical exam, tactile and cold water tests. The intensity of DH was assessed using a visual analogue scale, and a calibrated examiner measured the scores using a caliper. The ICC for intra-examiner was 0.990. Scores above 5 mm were considered sensitive teeth. The association between variables was assessed by Chi-square test. ROC curve analysis determined accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the tests (p < .05). RESULTS The mean age of participants was 24.08 years. 158 (41.7%) volunteers self-reported the presence of DH, while, 88.7% of the participants were clinically diagnosed (p = .023). In total, 8958 teeth were evaluated, of those 3367 (37.6%) were diagnosed sensitive. The most prevalent teeth with DH were incisors and premolars. The accuracy of the tests with cold water and tactile were 99%. The sensitivity and specificity for cold water and tactile tests were 99.9%, 99.7%, 99.1% and 87.6%, respectively. CONCLUSION The self-reported prevalence of DH was significantly lower than that clinically diagnosed. The cold test proved to be a highly accurate stimulus for the diagnosis of DH.

Abstract
AIM To measure the prevalence of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in adolescents. METHODS The diagnosis was based on self-report and was confirmed by tactile and evaporative tests. The association between DH and predictor factors was determined using a multivariate model. The sample consisted of 384 adolescents. RESULTS The prevalence was 19.0%. DH prevalence to tactile stimulus was higher in those participants whose toothbrush movement was vertical/horizontal (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.47-0.60, p < 0.001), in the presence of dental biofilm (OR = 2.45, 95% CI = 1.94-3.09, p < 0.001), of non-carious cervical lesion (OR = 2.76, 95% CI = 2.40-3.18, p < 0.001), of gingival recession (OR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.44-1.86, p < 0.001) and gyroversion (OR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.40-1.82; p < 0.001). When DH was diagnosed by evaporative stimulus, there was an association with brush movement in a vertical/horizontal direction (OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.66-0.82, p < 0.001), with the use of mouthwash solutions (OR = 2.65, 95% CI = 2.16-3.25, p < 0.001), in the presence of non-carious cervical lesion (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.57-1.96, p < 0.001), of gyroversion (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.51-1.90, p < 0.001) and gingival recession (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.59-1.99, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of DH in the sample was worrying, since almost 1 in 5 adolescents had DH. Individuals with DH were more likely to report traumatic dental brushing, and presence of dental biofilm, non-carious cervical lesion, gingival recession and gyroversion in the affected teeth.

Abstract
Background and Aims Dentin hypersensitivity is a frequent oral condition among patients suffering from gingival recession. Recent studies have suggested that photobiomodulation has the potential to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. The present study aims to assess the effectiveness of a new design of photobiomodulation toothbrush with specific irradiation parameters as a homecare device in treating dentin hypersensitivity and to compare its therapeutic effect with that of fluoride varnish. Materials and Methods Thirty patients with gingival recession and dentin hypersensitivity were selected and randomly assigned to three groups of equal size: fluoride varnish, photobiomodulation, and the combination. Dentin pain and hypersensitivity were measured using visual analog scale (VAS) by two distinct tests: the contact test with a periodontal probe and the air blast test on the areas of gingival recession and denuded root; once at baseline and again one month after the initial application of treatments. Laser irradiation was carried out at the wavelength of 660 nm in CW with an output power of 40 mW for 30 seconds per spot (1.2 J per spot, 6 J/cm2 energy density, and 200 mW/cm2 power density), perpendicularly to denuded root surfaces in non-contact mode. Results A significant reduction in dentin pain and hypersensitivity was observed in all three groups. However, the reduction was significantly greater in the combination group. Conclusion At-home treatment of dentin hypersensitivity with photobiomodulation toothbrush is a convenient, safe, and effective method for the management of dentin hypersensitivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of a dissolvable strip containing 15% w/w calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) (Novamin®) in providing rapid relief from dentine hypersensitivity (DH). METHODS In this examiner-blind, proof-of-principle study, 120 healthy adults with DH were randomized 1:1 to the Test strip, professionally applied to facial surfaces of two selected teeth, or to No treatment. Sensitivity was assessed at baseline and 10min, 2h and 4h post-application in response to evaporative (air) and tactile stimuli (measured by Schiff sensitivity scale/a numeric rating scale and tactile threshold, respectively). Change from baseline was analyzed by ANCOVA. RESULTS At 10min post-application, mean Schiff score change from baseline (primary endpoint) was statistically significant with the Test strip (-0.46; 95% confidence intervals [CI]: -0.563, -0.356; p<0.0001) but not with No treatment (-0.02; 95% CI: -0.119, 0.088; p=0.7664). The between-treatment group difference favored the Test strip (difference: -0.44; 95% CI: -0.591, -0.297; p<0.0001). Similar improvements with the Test strip were reported for all other evaporative (air) and tactile sensitivity endpoints (p<0.0001 vs no-treatment) at all timepoints (10min, 2h, 4h). Test strips were considered by most staff and participants slightly/moderately easy to apply (98%). Many participants rated the overall usage experience as "like moderately" (40%) or "like extremely" (20%). There were no treatment-related adverse events. CONCLUSION This new CSPS-based technology may provide a novel treatment option for rapid relief from DH (Clinicaltrials.gov NCT02937623). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE A dissolvable strip containing 15% w/w calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) demonstrated significantly greater dentine hypersensitivity reductions following a single application compared with no treatment. Strips were well-liked by participants and generally well tolerated. A strip containing CSPS, which dissolves within 10min, may provide rapid relief from dentine hypersensitivity.

Abstract
Background This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the factors associated to the cervical dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in Brazilian adult population. Methods Three hundred and eighty patients (67.2% women and 32.8% men) were assessed by questionnaire and thermal test with ice. Participants marked in a visual analogue scale (VAS) the intensity of pain, and a calibrated examiner (ICC 0.990) measured the scores using a caliper. Pain scores above 0.5 mm were considered sensitive teeth. The DH associated factors were investigated by clinical examination. The association between variables was assessed by Spearman correlation and the Chi-square test. Logistic regression was used to determine the variables that predict DH (p < 0.05). Results The mean age of participants was 24.08 years. In this population, 8958 teeth were evaluated, of those 3037 (33.9%) were diagnosed sensitive. The most prevalent associated factors to DH were abnormal tooth positioning (9.0%), occlusal trauma (6.5%) and gingival recession (5.6%). The erosion predicted significantly the DH on both simple (OR 7.85, p < 0.001) and multiple(OR 4.36, p < 0.001) analysis. Conclusion The exposure of dentinal tubules by erosion is probably the major predictor of dentin hypersensitivity. The healthy tooth is able to protect against DH.

Abstract
This in vitro study evaluated the effect of toothpastes with different active ingredients on dentin permeability using an extended protocol including multiple applications and several thermal ageing cycles in the presence or absence of human saliva. The Null hypothesis was that dentin permeability of a hydroxyapatite containing toothpaste (BR), a potassium nitrate (SP) and an arginine and calcium carbonate (EH) containing toothpaste were similar. Dentin permeability was measured as hydraulic conductance using a commercially available capillary flow system (Flodec, Geneva) and results were expressed as % relative to matching controls. Without saliva, the ranking (best first) of dentin permeability was BR(61%) < SP(87%) < EH(118%), with saliva EH(63%) < SP(72%) < BR(88%). Saliva increased or decreased permeability dependent upon the test material. BR reduced dentin permeability significantly more in absence of saliva, with saliva EH was superior to BR. Repeated material application decreased and thermal ageing increased dentin permeability. The different tooth pastes reduced permeability differently, the best being BR without saliva, the least EH without saliva. The newly introduced test conditions (ageing, saliva, multiple applications) influenced single results significantly, and as they better simulate the in vivo situation they should be considered to be included in further in vitro permeability testing of desensitizing preparations.

Abstract
Dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) can have a significant impact on oral health and functioning, and it is a clinical symptom commonly managed by dentists during routine clinical practice. DH symptoms are typically elicited by otherwise innocuous, nonpainful stimuli applied to exposed dentin (e.g., tactile stimuli, warming or cooling temperatures or air puffs). Treatment approaches have sought to directly target the dentinal pulp tissues or close dentinal tubules via dental office care and treatment services (fluoride varnishes, glutaraldehydes, bonding agents, sealants, oxalates, or lasers) or home care services (toothpastes or dentifrices containing fluoride or potassium nitrate compounds). The purpose of this prospective multicenter cohort study was to assess how community-based dentists from the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (National Dental PBRN) manage DH and whether the effectiveness of DH treatments can be assessed in those settings. A total of 171 dentists recruited 1862 subjects with DH from their existing patients. Dentists then recommended and provided DH treatment as appropriate. Treatment choice was at the discretion of the dentists. Patients rated their DH pain at baseline and 1, 4, and 8 wk during the course of their treatments. They used pain intensity and unpleasantness visual analog scales and 4 labeled magnitude scales and rated their satisfaction with treatment after 8 wk. Patients were provided reminders postbaseline via email, texting, or voice mail. These patient-centered outcomes served as the principal measures for the assessment of treatment because treatments sought to alleviate DH symptoms. The patients with DH who reported pain reduction from dentist-provided treatments (glutaraldehyde/HEMA [hydroxyethyl methacrylate] compounds, oxalates, and bonding agents), dentists' advice and counseling regarding oral habits and diet, and patient-applied fluoride toothpaste reported a concomitant positive rating of satisfaction with DH treatments. The results from this study support the feasibility of engaging network practices to assess the effectiveness of clinical DH treatments. Knowledge Transfer Statement: National Dental PBRN dentists provide a range of procedures to treat dentinal hypersensitivity. In this large nonrandomized study designed to assess clinical care and to capture patient-reported outcomes, about 60% of patients reported improvement in pain. This study demonstrated the feasibility of engaging network dentists and their patients to assess treatment effectiveness. Future studies will explore the feasibility of imposing randomization and measuring patient compliance with treatment in the manner that this treatment is provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of 3.14% dipotassium oxalate monohydrate-containing strip on the relief of dentinal hypersensitivity (DH). A second objective was to determine whether there was a difference in DH levels when the strip was self-applied vs applied by a dental professional. METHODS Sixty subjects were randomized into self-applied, professionally applied or placebo-strip groups. Dentinal hypersensitivity was evaluated by a blinded examiner, using the Schiff Air Scale (SAS). A verbal rating scale (VRS) was also used to measure the subjects' perception of pain. Measures were taken at baseline, 30 minutes, 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in DH in all three groups (P ≤ .05) at 30 minutes and 8 weeks post-treatment. At the 4-week follow-up, only the self- and professionally applied (active ingredient) groups had a significant reduction in DH compared to baseline. When comparing the reduction in DH levels between groups, the only significant difference occurred between the professionally applied treatment group and the placebo group at the 4-week follow-up. There were no significant differences in DH reduction levels achieved between the self- and professionally applied groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS This study confirmed the short-term (4 weeks) effectiveness of a single application of 3.14% dipotassium oxalate monohydrate-containing strip. Self- and professional application were not shown to be different.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review examines the effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in the management of caries in older adults. BACKGROUND Silver diamine fluoride has been extensively researched and proven effective for caries prevention and arrest in children. Limited studies support its effectiveness in adult and older adult populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multiple databases were searched according to specified inclusion-exclusion criteria. Quality assessment used modified Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine worksheets. RESULTS Three randomised controlled trials were identified that addressed the effectiveness of SDF on root caries in older adults, but none addressed coronal caries. Root caries prevented fraction and arrest rate for SDF were significantly higher than placebo. The prevented fraction for caries prevention for SDF compared to placebo was 71% in a 3-year study and 25% in a 2-year study. The prevented fraction for caries arrest for SDF was 725% greater in a 24-month study and 100% greater than placebo in a 30-month study. No severe adverse effects were observed. CONCLUSION This systematic review evaluates the use of SDF for both root caries prevention and arrest in older adults. Existing reports of SDF trials support effectiveness in root caries prevention and arrest, remineralization of deep occlusal lesions and treatment of hypersensitive dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a condition commonly encountered in clinical dental practice. The authors conduct a study to identify the treatments recommended to manage DH among dentists in the United States. METHODS The authors conducted a multicenter study of 1,862 patients with DH who received a diagnosis and were treated by 171 dentists with The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. RESULTS The most common treatment recommended was desensitizing over-the-counter (OTC) potassium nitrate toothpaste (alone or in combination with other treatments) for 924 of 1,862 patients (50%). This was followed by an application of fluoride varnish (FV) for 516 patients (28%) and a prescription for fluoride toothpaste for 314 patients (17%). Restorative treatments were recommended to 151 patients (8%). The most common single treatment recommendation was desensitizing OTC potassium nitrate toothpaste, recommended to 335 patients (18%). The most frequent combination of 2 treatment modalities was FV and desensitizing OTC potassium nitrate toothpaste, recommended to 100 patients (5%). A total of 890 of 1,862 patients (48%) with DH received a recommendation for 1 treatment modality, and 644 of 1,862 patients (35%) received a recommendation for a combination of 2 treatment modalities, most frequently an application of FV along with desensitizing OTC potassium nitrate toothpaste (100/1,862; 5%). CONCLUSIONS Desensitizing OTC potassium nitrate toothpaste and fluoride products were the most widely recommended products to manage DH in the practice setting. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Our results suggest that most network clinicians preferred noninvasive treatment modalities when treating DH.

Abstract
Background Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common problem encountered in clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to identify the management approaches for DH among United States dentists. Methods One hundred eighty five National Dental Practice-Based Research Network clinicians completed a questionnaire regarding their preferred methods to diagnose and manage DH in the practice setting, and their beliefs about DH predisposing factors. Results Almost all dentists (99%) reported using more than one method to diagnose DH. Most frequently, they reported using spontaneous patient reports coupled with excluding other causes of oral pain by direct clinical examination (48%); followed by applying an air blast (26%), applying cold water (12%), and obtaining patient reports after dentist’s query (6%). In managing DH, the most frequent first choice was desensitizing, over-the-counter (OTC), potassium nitrate toothpaste (48%), followed by fluorides (38%), and glutaraldehyde/HEMA (3%). A total of 86% of respondents reported using a combination of products when treating DH, most frequently using fluoride varnish and desensitizing OTC potassium nitrate toothpaste (70%). The most frequent predisposing factor leading to DH, as reported by the practitioners, was recessed gingiva (66%), followed by abrasion, erosion, abfraction/attrition lesions (59%) and bruxism (32%). Conclusions The majority of network practitioners use multiple methods to diagnose and manage DH. Desensitizing OTC potassium nitrate toothpaste and fluoride formulations are the most widely used products to manage DH in dental practice setting.
