Light-Triggered Reversible Change in the Electronic Structure of MoO3 Nanosheets via an Excited-State Proton Transfer Mechanism

Light is an attractive source of energy for regulating stimulus-responsive chemical systems. Here, we use light as a gating source to control the redox state, the localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) peak, and the structure of molybdenum oxide (MoO3) nanosheets, which are important for various applications. However, the light excitation is not that of the MoO3 nanosheets but rather that of pyranine (HPTS) photoacids, which in turn undergo an excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) process. We show that the ESPT process from HPTS to the nanosheets and the intercalation of protons within the MoO3 nanosheets trigger the reduction of the nanosheets and the broadening of the LSPR peak, a process that is reversible, meaning that in the absence of light, the LSPR peak diminishes and the nanosheets return to their oxidized form. We further show that this reversible process is accompanied by a change in the nanosheet size and morphology.

Multiepitope glycan based laser assisted fluorescent nanocomposite with dual functionality for sensing and ablation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) infection is becoming a severe health hazard and needs early diagnosis with high specificity. However, the non-specific binding of a biosensor is a challenge to the current bacterial detection system. For the first time, we chemically synthesized a galactose tripod (GT) as a P. aeruginosa-specific ligand. We conjugated GT to a photothermally active fluorescent nanocomposite (Au@SiO2-TCPP). P. aeruginosa can be detected using Au@SiO2-TCPP-GT, and additionally ablated as well using synergistic photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Molecular dynamics and simulation studies suggested better binding of GT (binding energy = -6.6 kcal mol-1) with P. aeruginosa lectin than that of galactose monopod (GM) (binding energy = -5.9 kcal mol-1). Furthermore, a binding study was extended to target P. aeruginosa, which has a galactose-binding carbohydrate recognition domain receptor. The colorimetric assay confirmed a limit of detection (LOD) of 104 CFU mL-1. We also looked into the photosensitizing property of Au@SiO2-TCPP-GT, which is stimulated by laser light (630 nm) and causes photoablation of bacteria by the formation of singlet oxygen in the surrounding media. The cytocompatibility of Au@SiO2-TCPP-GT was confirmed using cytotoxicity assays on mammalian cell lines. Moreover, Au@SiO2-TCPP-GT also showed non-hemolytic activity. Considering the toxicity analysis and efficacy of the synthesized glycan nanocomposites, these can be utilized for the treatment of P. aeruginosa-infected wounds. Furthermore, the current glycan nanocomposites can be used for bacterial detection and ablation of P. aeruginosa in contaminated food and water samples as well.

Bio-barcode assay: A useful technology for ultrasensitive and logic-controlled specific detection in food safety: A review

Food safety is one of the greatest public health challenges. Developing ultrasensitive detection methods for analytes at ultra-trace levels is, therefore, essential. In recent years, the bio-barcode assay (BCA) has emerged as an effective ultrasensitive detection strategy that is based on the indirect amplification of various DNA probes. This review systematically summarizes the progress of fluorescence, PCR, and colorimetry-based BCA methods for the detection of various contaminants, including pathogenic bacteria, toxins, pesticides, antibiotics, and other chemical substances in food in over 120 research papers. Current challenges, including long experimental times and strict storage conditions, and the prospects for the application of BCA in biomedicine and environmental analyses, have also been discussed herein.

Sensitive and selective colorimetric detection of Staphylococcus aureus-SPA gene by engineered gold nanosensor

Staphylococcal protein A (SPA) is an important virulence factor that enables Staphylococcus aureus to evade host immune responses. The current work aims to detect the S. aureus SPA gene by a colorimetric method based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). For this purpose, the chromosomal DNA of S. aureus was extracted. Thereafter, primers and thiolated oligonucleotide probe were designed based on protein A sequence data in the gene bank. PCR analysis was performed, and the PCR product was electrophoresed on 2 % agarose gel. Gold nanosensor (Au-Ns) was synthesized by the reaction between AuNPs and the thiolated oligonucleotide probe. The physicochemical properties of AuNPs and Au-Ns were characterized. The detection of the SPA gene was performed based on color change detected by the naked eye and UV-vis spectrophotometry. Finally, the described method was optimized and validated for standard, clinical, and food samples. The PCR analysis showed a characteristic fragment of the SPA gene with a molecular size of 545 base pairs (bp) and a detection limit of 60 pg/ µL. The physicochemical analyses illustrated Au-Ns' correct preparation with a zeta potential of -13.42 mV and particle size range 6-11 nm. Moreover, Au-Ns showed 100 % specificity with a detection limit (DL) of 6 fg/ µL. The proposed method was well described to be applied in clinical and research laboratories.

Boosting the Photoelectrochemical Performance of Au/ZnO Nanorods by Co-Occurring Gradient Doping and Surface Plasmon Modification

Band bending modification of metal/semiconductor hybrid nanostructures requires low-cost and effective designs in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. To this end, it is evinced that gradient doping of Au nanoparticles (NPs) inwards the ZnO nanorods (NRs) through thermal treatment facilitated faster transport of the photo-induced charge carriers. Systematic PEC measurements show that the resulting gradient Au-doped ZnO NRs yielded a photocurrent density of 0.009 mA/cm² at 1.1 V (vs. NHE), which is 2.5-fold and 8-fold improved compared to those of Au-sensitized ZnO and the as-prepared ZnO NRs, respectively. The IPCE and ABPE efficiency tests confirmed the boosted photoresponse of gradient Au-incorporated ZnO NRs, particularly in the visible spectrum due to the synergistic surface plasmonic effect of Au NPs. A gradient Au dopant profile promoted the separation and transfer of the photo-induced charge carriers at the electrolyte interface via more upward band bending according to the elaborated electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy analyses. Therefore, this research presents an economical and facile strategy for preparing gradient plasmonic noble NP-incorporated semiconductor NRs, which have excellent potential in energy conversion and storage technologies.

Platinum Nanoparticles in Biomedicine: Preparation, Anti-Cancer Activity, and Drug Delivery Vehicles

Cancer is the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, excluding infectious disease. Because of their lack of specificity in chemotherapy agents are used for cancer treatment, these agents have severe systemic side effects, and gradually lose their therapeutic effects because most cancers become multidrug resistant. Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) are relatively new agents that are being tested in cancer therapy. This review covers the various methods for the preparation and physicochemical characterization of PtNPs. PtNPs have been shown to possess some intrinsic anticancer activity, probably due to their antioxidant action, which slows tumor growth. Targeting ligands can be attached to functionalized metal PtNPs to improve their tumor targeting ability. PtNPs-based therapeutic systems can enable the controlled release of drugs, to improve the efficiency and reduce the side effects of cancer therapy. Pt-based materials play a key role in clinical research. Thus, the diagnostic and medical industries are exploring the possibility of using PtNPs as a next-generation anticancer therapeutic agent. Although, biologically prepared nanomaterials exhibit high efficacy with low concentrations, several factors still need to be considered for clinical use of PtNPs such as the source of raw materials, stability, solubility, the method of production, biodistribution, accumulation, controlled release, cell-specific targeting, and toxicological issues to human beings. The development of PtNPs as an anticancer agent is one of the most valuable approaches for cancer treatment. The future of PtNPs in biomedical applications holds great promise, especially in the area of disease diagnosis, early detection, cellular and deep tissue imaging, drug/gene delivery, as well as multifunctional therapeutics.

Silver and Gold Nanoparticles for Antimicrobial Purposes against Multi-Drug Resistance Bacteria

Several pieces of research have been done on transition metal nanoparticles and their nanocomplexes as research on their physical and chemical properties and their relationship to biological features are of great importance. Among all their biological properties, the antibacterial and antimicrobial are especially important due to their high use for human needs. In this article, we will discuss the different synthesis and modification methods of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles and their physicochemical properties. We will also review some state-of-art studies and find the best relationship between the nanoparticles' physicochemical properties and potential antimicrobial activity. The possible antimicrobial mechanism of these types of nanoparticles will be discussed in-depth as well.

Voltammetric sensor based on bimetallic nanocomposite for determination of favipiravir as an antiviral drug

A novel and sensitive voltammetric nanosensor was developed for the first time for trace level monitoring of favipiravir based on gold/silver core–shell nanoparticles (Au@Ag CSNPs) with conductive polymer poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and functionalized multi carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs) on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The formation of Au@Ag CSNPs/PEDOT:PSS/F-MWCNT composite was confirmed by various analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Under the optimized conditions and at a typical working potential of + 1.23 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the Au@Ag CSNPs/PEDOT:PSS/F-MWCNT/GCE revealed linear quantitative ranges from 0.005 to 0.009 and 0.009 to 1.95 µM with a limit of detection 0.46 nM (S/N = 3) with acceptable relative standard deviations (1.1-4.9 %) for pharmaceutical formulations, urine, and human plasma samples without applying any sample pretreatment (1.12–4.93%). The interference effect of antiviral drugs, biological compounds, and amino acids was negligible, and the sensing system demonstrated outstanding reproducibility, repeatability, stability, and reusability. The findings revealed that this assay strategy has promising applications in diagnosing FAV in clinical samples, which could be attributed to the large surface area on active sites and high conductivity of bimetallic nanocomposite.

Growth-Promoting Gold Nanoparticles Decrease Stress Responses in Arabidopsis Seedlings

The global economic success of man-made nanoscale materials has led to a higher production rate and diversification of emission sources in the environment. For these reasons, novel nanosafety approaches to assess the environmental impact of engineered nanomaterials are required. While studying the potential toxicity of metal nanoparticles (NPs), we realized that gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have a growth-promoting rather than a stress-inducing effect. In this study we established stable short- and long-term exposition systems for testing plant responses to NPs. Exposure of plants to moderate concentrations of AuNPs resulted in enhanced growth of the plants with longer primary roots, more and longer lateral roots and increased rosette diameter, and reduced oxidative stress responses elicited by the immune-stimulatory PAMP flg22. Our data did not reveal any detrimental effects of AuNPs on plants but clearly showed positive effects on growth, presumably by their protective influence on oxidative stress responses. Differential transcriptomics and proteomics analyses revealed that oxidative stress responses are downregulated whereas growth-promoting genes/proteins are upregulated. These omics datasets after AuNP exposure can now be exploited to study the underlying molecular mechanisms of AuNP-induced growth-promotion.

Gold Nanostars with Reduced Fouling Facilitate Small Molecule Detection in the Presence of Protein

Gold nanoparticles have the potential to be used in biomedical applications from diagnostics to drug delivery. However, interactions of gold nanoparticles with different biomolecules in the cellular environment result in the formation of a “protein corona”—a layer of protein formed around a nanoparticle, which induces changes in the properties of nanoparticles. In this work we developed methods to reproducibly synthesize spheroidal and star-shaped gold nanoparticles, and carried out a physico-chemical characterization of synthesized anionic gold nanospheroids and gold nanostars through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential (ZP), nanoparticles tracking analysis (NTA), ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and estimates of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) signal enhancement ability. We analyzed how they interact with proteins after pre-incubation with bovine serum albumin (BSA) via UV–Vis, DLS, ZP, NTA, SERS, cryogenic TEM (cryo-TEM) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. The tests demonstrated that the protein adsorption on the particles’ surfaces was different for spheroidal and star shaped particles. In our experiments, star shaped particles limited the protein corona formation at SERS “hot spots”. This benefits the small-molecule sensing of nanostars in biological media. This work adds more understanding about protein corona formation on gold nanoparticles of different shapes in biological media, and therefore guides design of particles for studies in vitro and in vivo.

High Stability Au NPs: From Design to Application in Nanomedicine

In recent years, Au-based nanomaterials are widely used in nanomedicine and biosensors due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. However, these applications require Au NPs to have excellent stability in different environments, such as extreme pH, high temperature, high concentration ions, and various biomatrix. To meet the requirement of multiple applications, many synthetic substances and natural products are used to prepare highly stable Au NPs. Because of this, we aim at offering an update comprehensive summary of preparation high stability Au NPs. In addition, we discuss its application in nanomedicine. The contents of this review are based on a balanced combination of our studies and selected research studies done by worldwide academic groups. First, we address some critical methods for preparing highly stable Au NPs using polymers, including heterocyclic substances, polyethylene glycols, amines, and thiol, then pay attention to natural product progress Au NPs. Then, we sum up the stability of various Au NPs in different stored times, ions solution, pH, temperature, and biomatrix. Finally, the application of Au NPs in nanomedicine, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, photothermal therapy (PTT), clinical diagnosis, nanozyme, and radiotherapy (RT), was addressed concentratedly.

A low pH-based rapid and direct colorimetric sensing of bacteria using unmodified gold nanoparticles

Herein we report a novel strategy for the detection of bacteria using unfunctionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which was utilized as a colorimetric sensor. The UV-vis absorbance of AuNPs showed red shift due to the interactions between bacteria and AuNPs in the high acidic environment, producing a distinct color change which can be visually detected by naked-eye. The proposed low pH-based colorimetric assay was studied with seven types of foodborne bacteria, and the detection limit was found to be 1.6 × 10⁷ CFU/mL, 3.3 × 10⁵ CFU/mL, 4.5 × 10⁶ CFU/mL, 5.8 × 10⁶ CFU/mL, 2.8 × 10⁵ CFU/mL, 4.4 × 10⁷ CFU/mL and 6.6 × 10⁶ CFU/mL for strains Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Salmonella typhimurium respectively. The result can be observed by naked-eye within 5 min, the color changed from red to purple, blue and colorless with increasing the concentration of the bacteria, indicated the assay have the ability to differentiate bacteria of different concentrations. This work demonstrates that low pH-based colorimetric assay using unfunctionalized AuNPs for the directly detection of untreated bacteria is fast, simple and visual, has the potential for applications in bacterial diagnostics, especially the detection of pathogenic bacteria in food.

Metal Homeostasis and Gas Exchange Dynamics in Pisum sativum L. Exposed to Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Cerium dioxide nanoparticles are pollutants of emerging concern. They are rarely immobilized in the environment. This study extends our work on Pisum sativum L. as a model plant, cultivated worldwide, and is well suited for investigating additive interactions induced by nanoceria. Hydroponic cultivation, which prompts accurate plant growth control and three levels of CeO2 supplementation, were applied, namely, 100, 200, and 500 mg (Ce)/L. Phytotoxicity was estimated by fresh weights and photosynthesis parameters. Additionally, Ce, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ca, and Mg contents were analyzed by high-resolution continuum source atomic absorption and inductively coupled plasma optical emission techniques. Analysis of variance has proved that CeO2 nanoparticles affected metals uptake. In the roots, it decreased for Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Mg, while a reversed process was observed for Ca. The latter is absorbed more intensively, but translocation to above-ground parts is hampered. At the same time, nanoparticulate CeO2 reduced Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Ca accumulation in pea shoots. The lowest Ce concentration boosted the photosynthesis rate, while the remaining treatments did not induce significant changes. Plant growth stimulation was observed only for the 100 mg/L. To our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates the effect of nanoceria on photosynthesis-related parameters in peas.

Platinum Nanoparticles: Green Synthesis and Biomedical Applications

Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) have superior physicochemical properties and great potential in biomedical applications. Eco-friendly and economic approaches for the synthesis of PtNPs have been developed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional physical and chemical methods. Various biogenic entities have been utilized in the green synthesis of PtNPs, including mainly plant extracts, algae, fungi bacteria, and their biomedical effects were assessed. Other biological derivatives have been used in the synthesis of PtNPs such as egg yolk, sheep milk, honey, and bovine serum albumin protein. The green approaches for the synthesis of PtNPs have reduced the reaction time, the energy required, and offered ambient conditions of fabrication. This review highlights the state-of-the-art methods used for green synthesis of PtNPs, synthesis parameters, and their reported biomedical applications.

Palladium Nanoparticles Fabricated by Green Chemistry: Promising Chemotherapeutic, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Agents

Palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) showed great potential in biomedical applications because of their unique physicochemical properties. Various conventional physical and chemical methods have been used for the synthesis of Pd NPs. However, these methods include the use of hazardous reagents and reaction conditions, which may be toxic to health and to the environment. Thus, eco-friendly, rapid, and economic approaches for the synthesis of Pd NPs have been developed. Bacteria, fungi, yeast, seaweeds, plants, and plant extracts were used to prepare Pd NPs. This review highlights the most recent studies for the biosynthesis of Pd NPs, factors controlling their synthesis, and their potential biomedical applications.

DC-Plasma over Aqueous Solution for the Synthesis of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles under Pressurized Argon

Nanomaterials that comprise titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have received much attention owing to their wide applications; presently, the green synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles is a developing research area. In this study, the TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized through a DC-pulsed discharge plasma over an aqueous solution surface under a high-pressure argon environment. The titanium-rod electrode was utilized as the material source for the TiO2 nanoparticle generation. Experiments were performed at room temperature with pressurized argon at 1-4 MPa. To generate a pulse electrical discharge plasma, a DC power supply of 18.6 kV was applied. The Raman spectroscopy showed that the TiO2 nanoparticle with a brookite structure was formed dominantly. The scanning transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersion spectroscopy (STEM coupled with EDS) indicated that TiO2 coated with carbon and that without carbon coating were successfully produced at the nanoscale. The process presented here is an innovative process and can update the existing information regarding the synthesis of metal-based nanoparticles using pulsed discharge plasma under an argon environment.

Bio-barcode detection technology and its research applications: A review

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, the bio-barcode assay (BCA), as a new diagnostic tool, has been gradually applied to the detection of protein and nucleic acid targets and small-molecule compounds. BCA has the advantages of high sensitivity, short detection time, simple operation, low cost, good repeatability and good linear relationship between detection results. However, bio-barcode technology is not yet fully formed as a complete detection system, and the detection process in all aspects and stages is unstable. Therefore, studying the optimal reaction conditions, optimizing the experimental steps, exploring the multi-residue detection of small-molecule substances, and preparing immuno-bio-barcode kits are important research directions for the standardization and commercialization of BCA. The main theme of this review was to describe the principle of BCA, provide a comparison of its application, and introduce the single-residue and multi-residue detection of macromolecules and single-residue detection of small molecules. We also compared it with other detection methods, summarized its feasibility and limitations, expecting that with further improvement and development, the technique can be more widely used in the field of stable small-molecule and multi-residue detection.

Localized surface plasmon resonance biosensing of tomato yellow leaf curl virus

Current techniques for plant virus detection, such as RT- PCR and ELISA, require multistep procedures and rely on sophisticated equipment. Due to the global spread of plant viruses, the development of simpler, faster and cheaper assay methods is inevitable. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) had raised much interest during recent years due to their novel optical properties or diagnostic purposes. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR¹) of AuNPs had been used in the development of novel colorimetric nano-biosensing systems. The frequency and intensity of the LSPR peak generally depend on the shape, size and the surrounding medium of the AuNPs. In this study, unmodified AuNPs had been used to detect the unamplified Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) genome in infected plants. A specific DNA probe complementary to the coat protein region of virus genome was designed. The extracted total DNA of uninfected and infected plants was mixed with hybridization buffer and the designed probe. The mixture was denatured, annealed and then cooled to room temperature and was followed by AuNPs addition. The color changes in the samples indicating the presence of target virus infections were assessed visually after the addition of salt and confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results showed that this strategy allowed for fast and sensitive detection of TYLCV genome and eliminated the need for PCR amplification and detection equipment.

Sonochemical preparation of gold nanoparticles for sensitive colorimetric determination of nereistoxin insecticides in environmental samples

A simple colorimetric method using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed as an efficient strategy for specific and sensitive detection of insecticides that are analogs of nereistoxin (NRT). The AuNPs were synthesized by a surfactant-free sonochemical reaction with ultrasonication at 430 kHz. A color change occurred in the presence of NRT because the AuNPs aggregated if they were coated with a small amount of thioctic acid (TA). At a pH of around 5, the TA adsorbed on the AuNPs was deprotonated, whereas NRT was protonated (NRT-H⁺). Adsorption of NRT-H⁺ onto the TA-coated AuNPs surface would decrease the surface charge of the AuNPs, and this resulted in aggregation. Because the aggregation of the TA-coated AuNPs could not be induced by amine compounds without thiol groups, this provided a surface-limited aggregation mechanism for specific sensing of NRT. The absorbance at 700 nm was dependent on the concentration of NRT, and the calibration curve was linear over the concentration range 85 nM (12 ng/mL) to 1000 nM (140 ng/mL). The applicability of the proposed method to detection of trace levels of NRT in environmental water samples was successfully demonstrated using a simple liquid-liquid reverse extraction technique.

Green synthesis of Pd nanoparticles supported on reduced graphene oxide, using the extract of Rosa canina fruit, and their use as recyclable and heterogeneous nanocatalysts for the degradation of dye pollutants in water

The current study suggests a convenient synthesis of in situ, ecofriendly and well-dispersed palladium nanoparticles with narrow and small dimension distributions on a graphene oxide (GO) surface using a Rosa canina fruit extract as a stabilizer and reducing agent without the addition of any other stabilizers or surfactants. The as-synthesized nanocatalyst (Pd NPs/RGO) was assessed with XRD, UV-vis, FE-SEM, EDS, TEM, ICP and WDX. The obtained heterogeneous nanocatalyst showed catalytic performance for reducing 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) at ambient temperature in an ecofriendly medium. The catalyst was retained by centrifugation and reused several times with no considerable change in its catalytic performance.

We suggests a convenient synthesis of in situ, ecofriendly and well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles with narrow and small dimension distributions on graphene oxide (GO) using Rosa canina extract as a reducing agent and as the only stabilizer.

An electrodeposited molecularly imprinted quartz crystal microbalance sensor sensitized with AuNPs and rGO material for highly selective and sensitive detection of amantadine

In the present work, a new amantadine (AM) imprinted quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor sensitized by Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) material was fabricated by electrodeposition in the presence of o-aminothiophenol (o-AT) by cyclic voltammetry scanning. AuNPs and graphene, with the advantages of great chemical stability, electrical conductivity, and large surface area, show exceptionally high sensitivity. The results of different modifications of the QCM sensor fabrication process were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the frequency shift of the MIP-QCM sensor showed a linear relationship with the concentration of the AM template in the range of 1.0 × 10⁻⁵ to 1.0 × 10⁻³ mmol L⁻¹ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.40 × 10⁻⁶ mmol L⁻¹. The imprinting factor for AM reached 7.1, the selectivity coefficient for the analogues rimantadine (RT), adamantine (AMT) and 1-chloroadamantane (CMT) were 7.3, 5.6, and 6.1, respectively. Here, a highly sensitive, selective and stable QCM sensor prepared via the imprinting approach is reported for the first time for detection of AM from animal-derived food samples.

Chemisorption of iodine-125 to gold nanoparticles allows for real-time quantitation and potential use in nanomedicine

Gold nanoparticles have been available for many years as a research tool in the life sciences due to their electron density and optical properties. New applications are continually being developed, particularly in nanomedicine. One drawback is the need for an easy, real-time quantitation method for gold nanoparticles so that the effects observed in in vitro cell toxicity assays and cell uptake studies can be interpreted quantitatively in terms of nanoparticle loading. One potential method of quantifying gold nanoparticles in real time is by chemisorption of iodine-125, a gamma emitter, to the nanoparticles. This paper revisits the labelling of gold nanoparticles with iodine-125, first described 30 years ago and never fully exploited since. We explore the chemical properties and usefulness in quantifying bio-functionalised gold nanoparticle binding in a quick and simple manner. The gold particles were labelled specifically and quantitatively simply by mixing the two items. The nature of the labelling is chemisorption and is robust, remaining bound over several weeks in a variety of cell culture media. Chemisorption was confirmed as potassium iodide can remove the label whereas sodium chloride and many other buffers had no effect. Particles precoated in polymers or proteins can be labelled just as efficiently allowing for post-labelling experiments in situ rather than using radioactive gold atoms in the production process. We also demonstrate that interparticle exchange of I-125 between different size particles does not appear to take place confirming the affinity of the binding.

The Applications of Gold Nanoparticle-Initialed Chemiluminescence in Biomedical Detection

Chemiluminescence technique as a novel detection method has gained much attention in recent years owning to the merits of high sensitivity, wider linear ranges, and low background signal. Similarly, nanotechnology especially for gold nanoparticles has emerged as detection tools due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Recently, it has become increasingly popular to couple gold nanoparticles with chemiluminescence technique in biological agents' detection. In this review, we describe the superiority of both chemiluminescence and gold nanoparticles and conclude the different applications of gold nanoparticle-initialed chemiluminescence in biomedical detection.

Nanobiomaterials' applications in neurodegenerative diseases

The blood-brain barrier is the interface between the blood and brain, impeding the passage of most circulating cells and molecules, protecting the latter from foreign substances, and maintaining central nervous system homeostasis. However, its restrictive nature constitutes an obstacle, preventing therapeutic drugs from entering the brain. Usually, a large systemic dose is required to achieve pharmacological therapeutic levels in the brain, leading to adverse effects in the body. As a consequence, various strategies are being developed to enhance the amount and concentration of therapeutic compounds in the brain. One such tool is nanotechnology, in which nanostructures that are 1-100 nm are designed to deliver drugs to the brain. In this review, we examine many nanotechnology-based approaches to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The review begins with a brief history of nanotechnology, followed by a discussion of its definition, the properties of most reported nanomaterials, their biocompatibility, the mechanisms of cell-material interactions, and the current status of nanotechnology in treating Alzheimer's, Parkinson's diseases, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Of all strategies to deliver drug to the brain that are used in nanotechnology, drug release systems are the most frequently reported.

Colorimetric biosensing of pathogens using gold nanoparticles

Rapid detection of pathogens is crucial to minimize adverse health impacts of nosocomial, foodborne, and waterborne diseases. Gold nanoparticles are extremely successful at detecting pathogens due to their ability to provide a simple and rapid color change when their environment is altered. Here, we review general strategies of implementing gold nanoparticles in colorimetric biosensors. First, we highlight how gold nanoparticles have improved conventional genomic analysis methods by lowering detection limits while reducing assay times. Then, we focus on emerging point-of-care technologies that aim at pathogen detection using simpler assays. These advances will facilitate the implementation of gold nanoparticle-based biosensors in diverse environments throughout the world and help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

"Chemical nose" for the visual identification of emerging ocular pathogens using gold nanostars

Ocular pathogens can cause serious damages in the eye leading to severe vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Identification of pathogens is crucial for administering the appropriate antibiotics in order to gain effective control over ocular infection. Herein, we report a gold nanostar based "chemical nose" for visually identifying ocular pathogens. Using a spectrophotometer and nanostars of different sizes and degrees of branching, we show that the "chemical nose" is capable of identifying the following clinically relevant ocular pathogens with an accuracy of 99%: S. aureus, A. xylosoxidans, D. acidovorans and S. maltophilia. The differential colorimetric response is due to electrostatic aggregation of cationic gold nanostars around bacteria without the use of biomolecule ligands such as aptamers or antibodies. Transmission electron microscopy confirms that the number of gold nanostars aggregated around each bacterium correlates closely with the colorimetric response. Thus, gold nanostars serve as a promising platform for rapid visual identification of ocular pathogens with application in point-of-care diagnostics.
