Ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in wastewater: A review

The existence of pollutants, such as toxic organic dye chemicals, in water and wastewater raises concerns as they are inadequately eliminated through conventional water and wastewater treatment methods, including physicochemical and biological processes. Ultrasonic treatment has emerged as an advanced treatment process that has been widely applied to the decomposition of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Ultrasonic treatment has several advantages, including easy operation, sustainability, non-secondary pollutant production, and saving energy. This review examines the elimination of dye chemicals and categorizes them into cationic and anionic dyes based on the existing literature. The objectives include (i) analyzing the primary factors (water quality and ultrasonic conditions) that influence the sonodegradation of dye chemicals and their byproducts during ultrasonication, (ii) assessing the impact of the different sonocatalysts and combined systems (with ozone and ultraviolet) on sonodegradation, and (iii) exploring the characteristics-based removal mechanisms of dyes. In addition, this review proposes areas for future research on ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in water and wastewater.

Preparation of high-crystalline and non-metal modified g-C3N4 for improving ultrasound-accelerated white-LED-light-driven photocatalytic performances

As a non-metallic organic semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received much attention due to its unique physicochemical properties. However, the photocatalytic activity of this semiconductor faces challenges due to factors such as low electronic conductivity and limited active sites provided on its surface. The morphology and structure of g-C3N4, including macro/micro morphology, crystal structure and electronic structure can affect its catalytic activity. Non-metallic heteroatom doping is considered as an effective method to tune the optical, electronic and other physicochemical properties of g-C3N4. Here, we synthesized non-metal-doped highly crystalline g-C3N4 by one-pot calcination method, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 such as mesoporous nature, reduced band gap, wide-range photousability, improved charge carrier recombination, and the electrical conductivity was improved. Hence, the use of low-power white-LED-light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm) and ultrasound (US) irradiation synergistically engendered the Methylene Blue (MB) mineralization efficiency elevated to 100% within 120 min by following the pseudo-first-order mechanism under the following condition (i.e., pH 11, 0.75 g L-1 of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4, 20 mg L-1 MB, 0.25 ml s-1 O2, and spontaneous raising temperature). In addition, the rapid removal of MB by sonophotocatalysis was 4 times higher than that of primary photocatalysis. And radical scavenging experiments showed that the maximum distribution of active species corresponds to superoxide radical [Formula: see text]. More importantly, the sonophotocatalytic degradation ability of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4 was remarkably sustained even after the sixth consecutive run.

Advances on sonophotocatalysis as a water and wastewater treatment technique: efficiency, challenges and process optimisation

Due to water shortage and increased water pollution, various methods are being explored to improve water quality by treating contaminants. Sonophotocatalysis is a combination of two individual water treatment processes i.e., photocatalysis and sonocatalysis. With advantages including shorter reaction times and enhanced activity, this technique shows possible futuristic applications as an efficient water treatment technology. Herein, background insight on sonophotocalysis as a water and wastewater treatment technique as well as the general mechanism of activity is explained. The commonly used catalysts for sonophotocatalytic applications as well as their synthesis pathways are also briefly discussed. Additionally, the utilisation of sonophotocatalysis for the disinfection of various microbial species as well as treatment of wastewater pollutants including organic (dyes, pharmaceuticals and pesticides) and inorganic species (heavy metals) is deliberated. This review also gives a critical analysis of the efficiency, enhancement strategies as well as challenges and outlooks in this field. It is thus intended to give insight to researchers in the context of facilitating future developments in the field of water treatment, and advancing sonophotocatalysis towards large-scale implementation and commercialization.

Influence of Different Capping Agents on the Structural, Optical, and Photocatalytic Degradation Efficiency of Magnetite (Fe3O4) Nanoparticles

Octylamine (OTA), 1-dodecanethiol (DDT), and tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP) capped magnetite nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed inverse spinel crystalline phases for the as-prepared iron oxide nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopic micrographs showed iron oxide nanoparticles with mean particle sizes of 2.1 nm for Fe₃O₄-OTA, 5.0 nm for Fe₃O₄-DDT, and 4.4 nm for Fe₃O₄-TOP. The energy bandgap of the iron oxide nanoparticles ranges from 2.25 eV to 2.76 eV. The iron oxide nanoparticles were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of methylene blue with an efficiency of 55.5%, 58.3%, and 66.7% for Fe₃O₄-OTA, Fe₃O₄-DDT, and Fe₃O₄-TOP, respectively, while for methyl orange the degradation efficiencies were 63.8%, 47.7%, and 74.1%, respectively. The results showed that tri-n-octylphosphine capped iron oxide nanoparticles are the most efficient iron oxide nano-photocatalysts for the degradation of both dyes. Scavenger studies show that electrons (e^-) and hydroxy radicals (•OH) contribute significantly to the photocatalytic degradation reaction of both methylene blue and methyl orange using Fe₃O₄-TOP nanoparticles. The influence of the dye solution's pH on the photocatalytic reaction reveals that a pH of 10 is the optimum for methylene blue degradation, whereas a pH of 2 is best for methyl orange photocatalytic degradation using the as-prepared iron oxide nano-photocatalyst. Recyclability studies revealed that the iron oxide photocatalysts can be recycled three times without losing their photocatalytic activity.

Modelling the Performance of Electrically Conductive Nanofiltration Membranes

Electrically conductive membranes are a class of stimuli-responsive materials, which allow the adjustment of selectivity for and the rejection of charged species by varying the surface potential. The electrical assistance provides a powerful tool for overcoming the selectivity-permeability trade-off due to its interaction with charged solutes, allowing the passage of neutral solvent molecules. In this work, a mathematical model for the nanofiltration of binary aqueous electrolytes by an electrically conductive membrane is proposed. The model takes into account the steric as well as Donnan exclusion of charged species due to the simultaneous presence of chemical and electronic surface charges. It is shown that the rejection reaches its minimum at the potential of zero charge (PZC), where the electronic and chemical charges compensate for each other. The rejection increases when the surface potential varies in positive and negative directions with respect to the PZC. The proposed model is successfully applied to a description of experimental data on the rejection of salts and anionic dyes by PANi-PSS/CNT and MXene/CNT nanofiltration membranes. The results provide new insights into the selectivity mechanisms of conductive membranes and can be employed to describe electrically enhanced nanofiltration processes.

Chemometric-Assisted Litmus Test: One Single Sensing Platform Adapted from 1-13 to Narrow pH Ranges

A novel 3 × 4 colorimetric sensing platform, named the chemometric-assisted litmus test (CLT), has been developed by covalently anchoring commercial pH indicators to ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH). The proposed device can be exploited for pH determinations in a wide range from 1 to 13 and in specific narrow ranges, achieving sufficient accuracy and errors below 0.5 pH units. The experimental procedure is simple, quick and reliable; equilibration is reached in less than 2 h, CLT pictures are acquired by a camera, and data treatment is performed applying chemometric techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square regression (PLS) to RGB indices.

Enhanced Adsorption of Methyl Orange by Mongolian Montmorillonite after Aluminum Pillaring

This article studies the enhancement of methyl orange (MO) adsorption by Mongolian montmorillonite (MMt) modified by the intercalation of the Keggin Al13 complex, followed by calcination during the pillaring process. The properties of MMt, Al-intercalated MMt (P-MMt), and Al-pillared MMt (P-MMt-C) were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), surface-area analysis, and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The MO adsorption by modified MMt was subsequently evaluated. The XRD basal distance (d001) and the specific surface area (SSA) increased after the modification of MMt. The TGA results revealed that P-MMt and P-MMt-C had better thermal stability than MMt. The Al-pillared MMt obtained after calcination (e.g., P-MMt-C400) showed a larger basal distance and surface area than that without pillaring. The MO adsorption process of P-MMt-C400 was supposed to be dominated by chemisorption and heterogeneous multilayer adsorption, according to the kinetic and isotherm studies. The maximum adsorption capacity of P-MMt-C400 is 6.23 mg/g. The MO adsorption ability of Al-pillared MMt was contributed by the Keggin Al13 complex attracting MO and the increase in the surface area of macro-, meso- and micro-pores (>1.2 nm). The Al-pillared MMt in this study could be applied as an adsorbent in a water purification system to remove MO or other dye elements.

Removal of Dyes by Polymer-Enhanced Ultrafiltration: An Overview

The current problem of contamination caused by colored industrial effluents has led to the development of different techniques to remove these species from water. One of them, polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF), has been systematically studied in this mini review, in which research works from 1971 to date were found and analyzed. Dye retention rates of up to 99% were obtained in several cases. In addition, a brief discussion of different parameters, such as pH, interfering salts, type of polymer, dye concentration, and membrane type, and their influence in dye removal is presented. It was concluded from the above that these factors can be adapted depending on the pollutant to be remediated, in order to optimize the process. Finally, theoretical approaches have been used to understand the intermolecular interactions, and development of the studied technique. In this revision, it is possible to observe that molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, density functional theory calculations, and hybrid neural-genetic algorithms based on an evolutionary approach are the most usual approximations used for this purpose. Herein, there is a detailed discussion about what was carried out in order to contribute to the research development of this important science field.
