Distinct roles for alpha- and beta-band oscillations during mental simulation of goal-directed actions

The neuromechanical of Beta-band corticomuscular coupling within the human motor system

Beta-band activity in the sensorimotor cortex is considered a potential biomarker for evaluating motor functions. The intricate connection between the brain and muscle (corticomuscular coherence), especially in beta band, was found to be modulated by multiple motor demands. This coherence also showed abnormality in motion-related disorders. However, although there has been a substantial accumulation of experimental evidence, the neural mechanisms underlie corticomuscular coupling in beta band are not yet fully clear, and some are still a matter of controversy. In this review, we summarized the findings on the impact of Beta-band corticomuscular coherence to multiple conditions (sports, exercise training, injury recovery, human functional restoration, neurodegenerative diseases, age-related changes, cognitive functions, pain and fatigue, and clinical applications), and pointed out several future directions for the scientific questions currently unsolved. In conclusion, an in-depth study of Beta-band corticomuscular coupling not only elucidates the neural mechanisms of motor control but also offers new insights and methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of motor rehabilitation and related disorders. Understanding these mechanisms can lead to personalized neuromodulation strategies and real-time neurofeedback systems, optimizing interventions based on individual neurophysiological profiles. This personalized approach has the potential to significantly improve therapeutic outcomes and athletic performance by addressing the unique needs of each individual.

Hebbian plasticity induced by temporally coincident BCI enhances post-stroke motor recovery

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can support functional restoration of a paretic limb post-stroke. Hebbian plasticity depends on temporally coinciding pre- and post-synaptic activity. A tight temporal relationship between motor cortical (MC) activity associated with attempted movement and FES-generated visuo-proprioceptive feedback is hypothesized to enhance motor recovery. Using a brain-computer interface (BCI) to classify MC spectral power in electroencephalographic (EEG) signals to trigger FES-delivery with detection of movement attempts improved motor outcomes in chronic stroke patients. We hypothesized that heightened neural plasticity earlier post-stroke would further enhance corticomuscular functional connectivity and motor recovery. We compared subcortical non-dominant hemisphere stroke patients in BCI-FES and Random-FES (FES temporally independent of MC movement attempt detection) groups. The primary outcome measure was the Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Upper Extremity (FMA-UE). We recorded high-density EEG and transcranial magnetic stimulation-induced motor evoked potentials before and after treatment. The BCI group showed greater: FMA-UE improvement; motor evoked potential amplitude; beta oscillatory power and long-range temporal correlation reduction over contralateral MC; and corticomuscular coherence with contralateral MC. These changes are consistent with enhanced post-stroke motor improvement when movement is synchronized with MC activity reflecting attempted movement.

Intentional binding for noninvasive BCI control

Objective. Noninvasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow to interact with the external environment by naturally bypassing the musculoskeletal system. Making BCIs efficient and accurate is paramount to improve the reliability of real-life and clinical applications, from open-loop device control to closed-loop neurorehabilitation.Approach. By promoting sense of agency and embodiment, realistic setups including multimodal channels of communication, such as eye-gaze, and robotic prostheses aim to improve BCI performance. However, how the mental imagery command should be integrated in those hybrid systems so as to ensure the best interaction is still poorly understood. To address this question, we performed a hybrid EEG-based BCI training involving healthy volunteers enrolled in a reach-and-grasp action operated by a robotic arm.Main results. Showed that the hand grasping motor imagery timing significantly affects the BCI accuracy evolution as well as the spatiotemporal brain dynamics. Larger accuracy improvement was obtained when motor imagery is performed just after the robot reaching, as compared to before or during the movement. The proximity with the subsequent robot grasping favored intentional binding, led to stronger motor-related brain activity, and primed the ability of sensorimotor areas to integrate information from regions implicated in higher-order cognitive functions.Significance. Taken together, these findings provided fresh evidence about the effects of intentional binding on human behavior and cortical network dynamics that can be exploited to design a new generation of efficient brain-machine interfaces.

Neural oscillations guiding action during effects imagery

Goal-directed acting requires the integration of sensory information but can also be performed without direct sensory input. Examples of this can be found in sports and can be conceptualized by feedforward processes. There is, however, still a lack of understanding of the temporal neural dynamics and neuroanatomical structures involved in such processes. In the current study, we used EEG beamforming methods and examined 37 healthy participants in two well-controlled experiments varying the necessity of anticipatory processes during goal-directed action. We found that alpha and beta activity in the medial and posterior cingulate cortex enabled feedforward predictions about the position of an object based on the latest sensorimotor state. On this basis, theta band activity seems more related to sensorimotor representations, while beta band activity would be more involved in setting up the structure of the neural representations themselves. Alpha band activity in sensory cortices reflects an intensified gating of the anticipated perceptual consequences of the to-be-executed action. Together, the findings indicate that goal-directed acting through the anticipation of the predicted state of an effector is based on accompanying processes in multiple frequency bands in midcingulate and sensory brain regions.

Motor-related cortical oscillations distinguish one's own from a partner's contributions to a joint action

The ability to distinguish between one's own and others' actions is a requirement for successful joint action. Such a distinction might be supported by dissociable motor activity underlying each partner's individual contributions to the joint action. However, little research has directly compared motor activity associated with one's own vs. others' actions during joint action. The current study investigated whether motor-related cortical oscillations distinguish between self- and partner-produced actions when partners take turns producing taps to meet a joint timing goal. Across two experiments, the degree of beta suppression differentiated one's own from a partner's actions, with more suppression occurring during one's own actions than during a partner's actions. Self-partner differences in mu suppression were also evident, particularly when partners produced actions in succession. Increased beta suppression was also observed during partners' actions when they were followed by one's own actions, suggesting that the coordination demands imposed by the joint action could affect the pattern of beta reactivity during a turn-taking joint action. Together, these findings demonstrate that dynamic patterns of motor activity underpin successful joint action and that periods of distinct motor activity are associated with one's own contributions to a joint action.

Neural correlates of motor imagery and execution in real-world dynamic behavior: evidence for similarities and differences

A large body of evidence shows that motor imagery and action execution behaviors result from overlapping neural substrates, even in the absence of overt movement during motor imagery. To date it is unclear how neural activations in motor imagery and execution compare for naturalistic whole-body movements, such as walking. Neuroimaging studies have not directly compared imagery and execution during dynamic walking movements. Here we recorded brain activation with mobile EEG during walking compared to during imagery of walking, with mental counting as a control condition. We asked 24 healthy participants to either walk six steps on a path, imagine taking six steps, or mentally count from one to six. We found beta and alpha power modulation during motor imagery resembling action execution patterns; a correspondence not found performing the control task of mental counting. Neural overlap occurred early in the execution and imagery walking actions, suggesting activation of shared action representations. Remarkably, a distinctive walking-related beta rebound occurred both during action execution and imagery at the end of the action suggesting that, like actual walking, motor imagery involves resetting or inhibition of motor processes. However, we also found that motor imagery elicits a distinct pattern of more distributed beta activity, especially at the beginning of the task. These results indicate that motor imagery and execution of naturalistic walking involve shared motor-cognitive activations, but that motor imagery requires additional cortical resources.

Inequivalent and uncorrelated response priming in motor imagery and execution

Introduction

Theoretical considerations on motor imagery and motor execution have long been dominated by the functional equivalence view. Previous empirical works comparing these two modes of actions, however, have largely relied on subjective judgments on the imagery process, which may be exposed to various biases. The current study aims to re-examine the commonality and distinguishable aspects of motor imagery and execution via a response repetition paradigm. This framework aims to offer an alternative approach devoid of self-reporting, opening the opportunity for less subjective evaluation of the disparities and correlations between motor imagery and motor execution.

Methods

Participants performed manual speeded-choice on prime-probe pairs in each trial under three conditions distinguished by the modes of response on the prime: mere observation (Perceptual), imagining response (Imagery), and actual responses (Execution). Responses to the following probe were all actual execution of button press. While Experiment 1 compared the basic repetition effects in the three prime conditions, Experiment 2 extended the prime duration to enhance the quality of MI and monitored electromyography (EMG) for excluding prime imagery with muscle activities to enhance specificity of the underlying mechanism.

Results

In Experiment 1, there was no significant repetition effect after mere observation. However, significant repetition effects were observed in both imagery and execution conditions, respectively, which were also significantly correlated. In Experiment 2, trials with excessive EMG activities were excluded before further statistical analysis. A consistent repetition effect pattern in both Imagery and Execution but not the Perception condition. Now the correlation between Imagery and Execution conditions were not significant.

Conclusion

Findings from the current study provide a novel application of a classical paradigm, aiming to minimize the subjectivity inherent in imagery assessments while examining the relationship between motor imagery and motor execution. By highlighting differences and the absence of correlation in repetition effects, the study challenges the functional equivalence hypothesis of imagery and execution. Motor representations of imagery and execution, when measured without subjective judgments, appear to be more distinguishable than traditionally thought. Future studies may examine the neural underpinnings of the response repetition paradigm to further elucidating the common and separable aspects of these two modes of action.

Exploring empathic engagement in immersive media: An EEG study on mu rhythm suppression in VR

This study investigates the influence of immersive media, particularly Virtual Reality (VR), on empathic responses, in comparison to traditional television (TV), using electroencephalography (EEG). We employed mu rhythm suppression as a measurable neural marker to gauge empathic engagement, as its increase generally signifies heightened empathic responses. Our findings exhibit a greater mu rhythm suppression in VR conditions compared to TV conditions, suggesting a potential enhancement in empathic responses with VR. Furthermore, our results revealed that the strength of empathic responses was not confined to specific actions depicted in the video clips, underscoring the possibility of broader implications. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on the effects of different media environments on empathic engagement, particularly emphasizing the unique role of immersive technologies such as VR. It invites further investigation into how such technologies can shape and potentially enhance the empathic experience.

Short-term meditation training alters brain activity and sympathetic responses at rest, but not during meditation

Although more people are engaging in meditation practices that require specialized training, few studies address the issues associated with nervous activity pattern changes brought about by such training. For beginners, it remains unclear how much practice is needed before objective physiological changes can be detected, whether or not they are similar across the novices and what are the optimal strategies to track these changes. To clarify these questions we recruited individuals with no prior meditation experience. The experimental group underwent an eight-week Taoist meditation course administered by a professional, while the control group listened to audiobooks. Both groups participated in audio-guided, 34-min long meditation sessions before and after the 8-week long intervention. Their EEG, photoplethysmogram, respiration, and skin conductance were recorded during the mediation and resting state periods. Compared to the control group, the experimental group exhibited band-specific topically organized changes of the resting state brain activity and heart rate variability associated with sympathetic system activation. Importantly, no significant changes were found during the meditation process prior and post the 8-week training in either of the groups. The absence of notable changes in CNS and ANS activity indicators during meditation sessions, for both the experimental and control groups, casts doubt on the effectiveness of wearable biofeedback devices in meditation practice. This finding redirects focus to the importance of monitoring resting state activity to evaluate progress in beginner meditators. Also, 16 h of training is not enough for forming individual objectively different strategies manifested during the meditation sessions. Our results contributed to the development of tools to objectively monitor the progress in novice meditators and the choice of the relevant monitoring strategies. According to our findings, in order to track early changes brought about by the meditation practice it is preferable to monitor brain activity outside the actual meditation sessions.

Live vs video interaction: sensorimotor and visual cortical oscillations during action observation

Increasingly, in the field of communication, education, and business, people are switching to video interaction, and interlocutors frequently complain that the perception of nonverbal information and concentration suffer. We investigated this issue by analyzing electroencephalogram (EEG) oscillations of the sensorimotor (mu rhythm) and visual (alpha rhythm) cortex of the brain in an experiment with action observation live and on video. The mu rhythm reflects the activity of the mirror neuron system, and the occipital alpha rhythm shows the level of visual attention. We used 32-channel EEG recorded during live and video action observation in 83 healthy volunteers. The ICA method was used for selecting the mu- and alpha-components; the Fourier Transform was used to calculate the suppression index relative to the baseline (stationary demonstrator) of the rhythms. The main range of the mu rhythm was indeed sensitive to social movement and was highly dependent on the conditions of interaction-live or video. The upper mu-range appeared to be less sensitive to the conditions, but more sensitive to different movements. The alpha rhythm did not depend on the type of movement; however, a live performance initially caused a stronger concentration of visual attention. Thus, subtle social and nonverbal perceptions may suffer in remote video interactions.

EEG-based neurophysiological indices for expert psychomotor performance - a review

A primary objective of current human neuropsychological performance research is to define the physiological correlates of adaptive knowledge utilization, in order to support the enhanced execution of both simple and complex tasks. Within the present article, electroencephalography-based neurophysiological indices characterizing expert psychomotor performance, will be explored. As a means of characterizing fundamental processes underlying efficient psychometric performance, the neural efficiency model will be evaluated in terms of alpha-wave-based selective cortical processes. Cognitive and motor domains will initially be explored independently, which will act to encapsulate the task-related neuronal adaptive requirements for enhanced psychomotor performance associating with the neural efficiency model. Moderating variables impacting the practical application of such neuropsychological model, will also be investigated. As a result, the aim of this review is to provide insight into detectable task-related modulation involved in developed neurocognitive strategies which support heightened psychomotor performance, for the implementation within practical settings requiring a high degree of expert performance (such as sports or military operational settings).

Influence of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Motor Planning: A Resting-State and Task-State EEG Study

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) shows a potential regulatory role for motor planning. Still, existing research mainly focuses on behavioral studies, and the neural modulation mechanism needs to be clarified. Therefore, we designed a multi-condition (active or sham, pre or under, difficult or easy, left-hand or right-hand) motor planning experiment to explore the effect of online tVNS (i.e., tVNS and tasks synchronized). Twenty-eight subjects were recruited and randomly assigned to active and sham groups. Both groups performed the same tasks in the experiment and separately collected task-state EEG and 5-min eye-open resting-state EEG. The results showed that the changes in event-related potential (ERP) and movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) amplitudes were more significant for the left-hand difficult task (LD) under active-tVNS. According to the power spectrum results, active-tVNS significantly modulated the activities of the contralateral motor cortex at beta and gamma bands in the resting state. The functional connectivity based on partial directed coherence (PDC) showed significant changes in the parietal lobe after active-tVNS. These findings suggest that tVNS is a promising way to improve motor planning ability.

Brain-computer interface paradigms and neural coding

Brain signal patterns generated in the central nervous system of brain-computer interface (BCI) users are closely related to BCI paradigms and neural coding. In BCI systems, BCI paradigms and neural coding are critical elements for BCI research. However, so far there have been few references that clearly and systematically elaborated on the definition and design principles of the BCI paradigm as well as the definition and modeling principles of BCI neural coding. Therefore, these contents are expounded and the existing main BCI paradigms and neural coding are introduced in the review. Finally, the challenges and future research directions of BCI paradigm and neural coding were discussed, including user-centered design and evaluation for BCI paradigms and neural coding, revolutionizing the traditional BCI paradigms, breaking through the existing techniques for collecting brain signals and combining BCI technology with advanced AI technology to improve brain signal decoding performance. It is expected that the review will inspire innovative research and development of the BCI paradigm and neural coding.

Tensor Decomposition Analysis of Longitudinal EEG Signals Reveals Differential Oscillatory Dynamics in Eyes-Closed and Eyes-Open Motor Imagery BCI: A Case Report

Functional dissociation of brain neural activity induced by opening or closing the eyes has been well established. However, how the temporal dynamics of the underlying neuronal modulations differ between these eye conditions during movement-related behaviours is less known. Using a robotic-assisted motor imagery brain-computer interface (MI BCI), we measured neural activity over the motor regions with electroencephalography (EEG) in a stroke survivor during his longitudinal rehabilitation training. We investigated lateralized oscillatory sensorimotor rhythm modulations while the patient imagined moving his hemiplegic hand with closed and open eyes to control an external robotic splint. In order to precisely identify the main profiles of neural activation affected by MI with eyes-open (MIEO) and eyes-closed (MIEC), a data-driven approach based on parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) tensor decomposition was employed. Using the proposed framework, a set of narrow-band, subject-specific sensorimotor rhythms was identified; each of them had its own spatial and time signature. When MIEC trials were compared with MIEO trials, three key narrow-band rhythms whose peak frequencies centred at ∼8.0 Hz, ∼11.5 Hz, and ∼15.5 Hz, were identified with differently modulated oscillatory dynamics during movement preparation, initiation, and completion time frames. Furthermore, we observed that lower and higher sensorimotor oscillations represent different functional mechanisms within the MI paradigm, reinforcing the hypothesis that rhythmic activity in the human sensorimotor system is dissociated. Leveraging PARAFAC, this study achieves remarkable precision in estimating latent sensorimotor neural substrates, aiding the investigation of the specific functional mechanisms involved in the MI process.

Evaluation of abstract rule-based associations in the human premotor cortex during passive observation

Decision-making often manifests in behavior, typically yielding overt motor actions. This complex process requires the registration of sensory information with one's internal representation of the current context, before a categorical judgment of the most appropriate motor behavior can be issued. The construct concept of embodied decision-making encapsulates this sequence of complex processes, whereby behaviorally salient information from the environment is represented in an abstracted space of potential motor actions rather than only in an abstract cognitive "decision" space. Theoretical foundations and some empirical evidence account for support the involvement of premotor cortical circuits in embodied cognitive functions. Animal models show that premotor circuits participate in the registration and evaluation of actions performed by peers in social situations, that is, prior to controlling one's voluntary movements guided by arbitrary stimulus-response rules. However, such evidence from human data is currently limited. Here we used time-resolved magnetoencephalography imaging to characterize activations of the premotor cortex as human participants observed arbitrary, non-biological visual stimuli that either respected or violated a simple stimulus-response association rule. The participants had learned this rule previously, either actively, by performing a motor task (active learning), or passively, by observing a computer perform the same task (passive learning). We discovered that the human premotor cortex is activated during the passive observation of the correct execution of a sequence of events according to a rule learned previously. Premotor activation also differs when the subjects observe incorrect stimulus sequences. These premotor effects are present even when the observed events are of a non-motor, abstract nature, and even when the stimulus-response association rule was learned via passive observations of a computer agent performing the task, without requiring overt motor actions from the human participant. We found evidence of these phenomena by tracking cortical beta-band signaling in temporal alignment with the observation of task events and behavior. We conclude that premotor cortical circuits that are typically engaged during voluntary motor behavior are also involved in the interpretation of events of a non-ecological, unfamiliar nature but related to a learned abstract rule. As such, the present study provides the first evidence of neurophysiological processes of embodied decision-making in human premotor circuits when the observed events do not involve motor actions of a third party.

Down and up! Does the mu rhythm index a gating mechanism in the developing motor system?

Developmental research on action processing in the motor cortex relies on a key neural marker - a decrease in 6-12 Hz activity (coined mu suppression). However, recent evidence points towards an increase in mu power, specific for the observation of others' actions. Complementing the findings on mu suppression, this raises the critical question for the functional role of the mu rhythm in the developing motor system. We here discuss a potential solution to this seeming controversy by suggesting a gating function of the mu rhythm: A decrease in mu power may index the facilitation, while an increase may index the inhibition of motor processes, which are critical during action observation. This account may advance our conception of action understanding in early brain development and points towards critical directions for future research.

Tool use acquisition induces a multifunctional interference effect during object processing: evidence from the sensorimotor mu rhythm

A fundamental characteristic of human development is acquiring and accumulating tool use knowledge through observation and sensorimotor experience. Recent studies showed that, in children and adults, different action possibilities to grasp-to-move and grasp-to-use objects generate a conflict that extinguishes neural motor resonance phenomena during visual object processing. In this study, a training protocol coupled with EEG recordings was administered in virtual reality to healthy adults to evaluate whether a similar conflict occurs between novel tool use knowledge. Participants perceived and manipulated two novel 3D tools trained beforehand with either single or double-usage. A weaker reduction of mu-band (10-13 Hz) power, accompanied by a reduced inter-trial phase coherence, was recorded during the perception of the tool associated with the double-usage. These effects started within the first 200 ms of visual object processing and were predominantly recorded over the left motor system. Furthermore, interacting with the double usage tool delayed grasp-to-reach movements. The results highlight a multifunctional interference effect, such as tool use acquisition reduces the neural motor resonance phenomenon and inhibits the activation of the motor system during subsequent object recognition. These results imply that learned tool use information guides sensorimotor processes of objects.

Predictive motor activation: Modulated by expectancy or predictability?

Predicting actions is a fundamental ability that helps us to comprehend what is happening in our environment and to interact with others. The motor system was previously identified as source of action predictions. Yet, which aspect of the statistical likelihood of upcoming actions the motor system is sensitive to remains an open question. This EEG study investigated how regularities in observed actions are reflected in the motor system and utilized to predict upcoming actions. Prior to measuring EEG, participants watched videos of action sequences with different transitional probabilities. After training, participants' brain activity over motor areas was measured using EEG while watching videos of action sequences with the same statistical structure. Focusing on the mu and beta frequency bands we tested whether activity of the motor system reflects the statistical likelihood of upcoming actions. We also explored two distinct aspects of the statistical structure that capture different prediction processes, expectancy and predictability. Expectancy describes participants' expectation of the most likely action, whereas predictability represents all possible actions and their relative probabilities. Results revealed that mu and beta oscillations play different roles during action prediction. While the mu rhythm reflected anticipatory activity without any link to the statistical structure, the beta rhythm was related to the expectancy of an action. Our findings support theories proposing that the motor system underlies action prediction, and they extend such theories by showing that multiple forms of statistical information are extracted when observing action sequences. This information is integrated in the prediction generated by the neural motor system of which action is going to happen next.

Temporal profiles of cortical oscillations in novice performers for goal-directed aiming in a shooting task

Goal-directed aiming relies on the ability to control attention and visuomotor movements while preparing for motor execution. Research in precision sports has investigated cortical oscillations for supporting expert performance. However, the results may be influenced by adaptive and strategic behaviors after intensive training. Whether and at what time points distinctive oscillations support goal-directed aiming without such training remains elusive. In this electroencephalographic (EEG) study, we investigated how the theta, alpha and beta oscillations change to support accurate aiming before novices took an action. We first conducted a model-based analysis to examine the correlation of cortical oscillations with accurate shooting on a trial-by-trial basis in a within-individual manner. The results showed that alpha and beta oscillations at different time points during the aiming period were better predictors of aiming accuracy. We then compared the oscillatory power for good versus poor performance. The results showed decreases in the alpha and beta power across distributed cortical areas and an increase in the frontal theta power successively before shot release. Moreover, greater intertrial phase coherence was observed for good performance than for poor performance in posterior alpha activity and anterior beta activity during the aiming period. In conclusion, these results advance our understanding of the temporal dynamics of theta, alpha and beta oscillations in orchestrating goal setting, motor preparation and focused attention to monitoring both external and internal states for accurate aiming. Among the three, alpha and beta oscillations are critical for predicting aiming performance and theta oscillations reflect effortful cognitive control.

Beta rhythmicity in human motor cortex reflects neural population coupling that modulates subsequent finger coordination stability

Human behavior is not performed completely as desired, but is influenced by the inherent rhythmicity of the brain. Here we show that anti-phase bimanual coordination stability is regulated by the dynamics of pre-movement neural oscillations in bi-hemispheric primary motor cortices (M1) and supplementary motor area (SMA). In experiment 1, pre-movement bi-hemispheric M1 phase synchrony in beta-band (M1-M1 phase synchrony) was online estimated from 129-channel scalp electroencephalograms. Anti-phase bimanual tapping preceded by lower M1-M1 phase synchrony exhibited significantly longer duration than tapping preceded by higher M1-M1 phase synchrony. Further, the inter-individual variability of duration was explained by the interaction of pre-movement activities within the motor network; lower M1-M1 phase synchrony and spectral power at SMA were associated with longer duration. The necessity of cortical interaction for anti-phase maintenance was revealed by sham-controlled repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over SMA in another experiment. Our results demonstrate that pre-movement cortical oscillatory coupling within the motor network unknowingly influences bimanual coordination performance in humans after consolidation, suggesting the feasibility of augmenting human motor ability by covertly monitoring preparatory neural dynamics.

Grasping the semantic of actions: a combined behavioral and MEG study

There is experimental evidence that the brain systems involved in action execution also play a role in action observation and understanding. Recently, it has been suggested that the sensorimotor system is also involved in language processing. Supporting results are slower response times and weaker motor-related MEG Beta band power suppression in semantic decision tasks on single action verbs labels when the stimulus and the motor response involve the same effector. Attenuated power suppression indicates decreased cortical excitability and consequent decreased readiness to act. The embodied approach forwards that the simultaneous involvement of the sensorimotor system in the processing of the linguistic content and in the planning of the response determines this language-motor interference effect. Here, in a combined behavioral and MEG study we investigated to what extent the processing of actions visually presented (i.e., pictures of actions) and verbally described (i.e., verbs in written words) share common neural mechanisms. The findings demonstrated that, whether an action is experienced visually or verbally, its processing engages the sensorimotor system in a comparable way. These results provide further support to the embodied view of semantic processing, suggesting that this process is independent from the modality of presentation of the stimulus, including language.

Development of a wireless ultrasonic brain stimulation system for concurrent bilateral neuromodulation in freely moving rodents

Bilateral brain stimulation is an important modality used to investigate brain circuits and treat neurological conditions. Recently, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) received significant attention as a novel non-invasive neurostimulation technique with high spatial specificity. Despite the growing interest, the typical ultrasound brain stimulation study, especially for small animals, is limited to a single target of sonication. The constraint is associated with the complexity and the cost of the hardware system required to achieve multi-regional sonication. This work presented the development of a low-cost LIPUS system with a pair of single-element ultrasound transducers to address the above problem. The system was built with a multicore processor with an RF amplifier circuit. In addition, LIPUS device was incorporated with a wireless module (bluetooth low energy) and powered by a single 3.7 V battery. As a result, we achieved an ultrasound transmission with a central frequency of 380 kHz and a peak-to-peak pressure of 480 kPa from each ultrasound transducer. The developed system was further applied to anesthetized rats to investigate the difference between uni- and bilateral stimulation. A significant difference in cortical power density extracted from electroencephalogram signals was observed between uni- and bilateral LIPUS stimulation. The developed device provides an affordable solution to investigate the effects of LIPUS on functional interhemispheric connection.

The neural response is heightened when watching a person approaching compared to walking away: Evidence for dynamic social neuroscience

The action observation network has been proposed to play a key role in predicting the action intentions (or goals) of others, thereby facilitating social interaction. Key information when interacting with others is whether someone (an agent) is moving towards or away from us, indicating whether we are likely to interact with the person. In addition, to determine the nature of a social interaction, we also need to take into consideration the distance of the agent relative to us as the observer. How this kind of information is processed within the brain is unknown, at least in part because prior studies have not involved live whole-body motion. Consequently, here we recorded mobile EEG in 18 healthy participants, assessing the neural response to the modulation of direction (walking towards or away) and distance (near vs. far distance) during the observation of an agent walking. We evaluated whether cortical alpha and beta oscillations were modulated differently by direction and distance during action observation. We found that alpha was only modulated by distance, with a stronger decrease of power when the agent was further away from the observer, regardless of direction. Critically, by contrast, beta was found to be modulated by both distance and direction, with a stronger decrease of power when the agent was near and facing the participant (walking towards) compared to when they were near but viewed from the back (walking away). Analysis revealed differences in both the timing and distribution of alpha and beta oscillations. We argue that these data suggest a full understanding of action observation requires a new dynamic neuroscience, investigating actual interactions between real people, in real world environments.

The oscillatory effects of rhythmic median nerve stimulation

Entrainment of brain oscillations can be achieved using rhythmic non-invasive brain stimulation, and stimulation of the motor cortex at a frequency associated with sensorimotor inhibition can impair motor responses. Despite the potential for therapeutic application, these techniques do not lend themselves to use outside of a clinical setting. Here, the aim was to investigate whether rhythmic median nerve stimulation (MNS) could be used to entrain oscillations related to sensorimotor inhibition. MEG data were recorded from 20 participants during 400 trials, where for each trial 10 pulses of MNS were delivered either rhythmically or arrhythmically at 12 or 20 Hz. Our results demonstrate a frequency specific increase in relative amplitude in the contralateral somatosensory cortex during rhythmic but not arrhythmic stimulation. This was coupled with an increase in inter-trial phase coherence at the same frequency, suggesting that the oscillations synchronised with the pulses of MNS. The results show that 12 and 20 Hz rhythmic peripheral nerve stimulation can produce entrainment. Rhythmic MNS resulted in synchronous firing of neuronal populations within the contralateral somatosensory cortex meaning these neurons were engaged in processing of the afferent input. Therefore, MNS could prove therapeutically useful in disorders associated with hyperexcitability within the sensorimotor cortices.

The Inhibition Effect of Affordances in Action Picture Naming: An ERP Study

How quickly are different kinds of conceptual knowledge activated in action picture naming? Using a masked priming paradigm, we manipulated the prime category type (artificial vs. natural), prime action type (precision, power, vs. neutral grip), and target action type (precision vs. power grip) in action picture naming, while electrophysiological signals were measured concurrently. Naming latencies showed an inhibition effect in the congruent action type condition compared with the neutral condition. ERP results showed that artificial and natural category primes induced smaller waveforms in precision or power action primes than neutral primes in the time window of 100-200 msec. Time-frequency results consistently presented a power desynchronization of the mu rhythm in the time window of 0-210 msec with precision action type artificial objects compared with neutral primes, which localized at the supplementary motor, precentral and postcentral areas in the left hemisphere. These findings suggest an inhibitory effect of affordances arising at conceptual preparation in action picture naming and provide evidence for embodied cognition.

Sports-Related Motor Processing at Different Rates of Force Development

How does our brain manage to process vast quantities of sensory information that define movement performance? By extracting the required movement parameters for which brain dynamics are, inter alia, assumed to be functionally related to, we used electroencephalography to investigate motor-related brain oscillations. Visually guided movement (i.e., motor) tasks at explosive, medium and slow rates of force development (RFD) revealed increased broad-band activity at explosive RFD, whereas decreasing activity could be observed during both intermediate and slow RFD. Moreover, a continuously decreasing activity pattern from faster to slower RFD and a return to baseline activity after full muscle relaxation was found. We suggest oscillatory activity to desynchronize in sensorimotor demanding tasks, whereas task-specific synchronization mirrors movement acceleration. The pre/post-stimulus activity steady state may indicate an inhibitory baseline that provides attentional focus and timing.

FGANet: fNIRS-guided Attention Network for Hybrid EEG-fNIRS Brain-Computer Interfaces

Non-invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been widely used for neural decoding, linking neural signals to control devices. Hybrid BCI systems using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have received significant attention for overcoming the limitations of EEG- and fNIRS-standalone BCI systems. However, most hybrid EEG-fNIRS BCI studies have focused on late fusion because of discrepancies in their temporal resolutions and recording locations. Despite the enhanced performance of hybrid BCIs, late fusion methods have difficulty in extracting correlated features in both EEG and fNIRS signals. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a deep learning-based early fusion structure, which combines two signals before the fully-connected layer, called the fNIRS-guided attention network (FGANet). First, 1D EEG and fNIRS signals were converted into 3D EEG and fNIRS tensors to spatially align EEG and fNIRS signals at the same time point. The proposed fNIRS-guided attention layer extracted a joint representation of EEG and fNIRS tensors based on neurovascular coupling, in which the spatially important regions were identified from fNIRS signals, and detailed neural patterns were extracted from EEG signals. Finally, the final prediction was obtained by weighting the sum of the prediction scores of the EEG and fNIRS-guided attention features to alleviate performance degradation owing to delayed fNIRS response. In the experimental results, the FGANet significantly outperformed the EEG-standalone network. Furthermore, the FGANet has 4.0% and 2.7% higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art algorithms in mental arithmetic and motor imagery tasks, respectively.

Are alpha and beta oscillations spatially dissociated over the cortex in context-driven spoken-word production?

Decreases in oscillatory alpha‐ and beta‐band power have been consistently found in spoken‐word production. These have been linked to both motor preparation and conceptual‐lexical retrieval processes. However, the observed power decreases have a broad frequency range that spans two “classic” (sensorimotor) bands: alpha and beta. It remains unclear whether alpha‐ and beta‐band power decreases contribute independently when a spoken word is planned. Using a re‐analysis of existing magnetoencephalography data, we probed whether the effects in alpha and beta bands are spatially distinct. Participants read a sentence that was either constraining or non‐constraining toward the final word, which was presented as a picture. In separate blocks participants had to name the picture or score its predictability via button press. Irregular‐resampling auto‐spectral analysis (IRASA) was used to isolate the oscillatory activity in the alpha and beta bands from the background 1‐over‐f spectrum. The sources of alpha‐ and beta‐band oscillations were localized based on the participants’ individualized peak frequencies. For both tasks, alpha‐ and beta‐power decreases overlapped in left posterior temporal and inferior parietal cortex, regions that have previously been associated with conceptual and lexical processes. The spatial distributions of the alpha and beta power effects were spatially similar in these regions to the extent we could assess it. By contrast, for left frontal regions, the spatial distributions differed between alpha and beta effects. Our results suggest that for conceptual‐lexical retrieval, alpha and beta oscillations do not dissociate spatially and, thus, are distinct from the classical sensorimotor alpha and beta oscillations.

It remains unclear whether the consistently found alpha‐ and beta‐band power decreases in spoken‐word production support a single operation or contribute independently. Using novel methodology, we probed whether the alpha and beta bands are distinct from an anatomical perspective. We found anatomical overlap in the left posterior temporal and inferior parietal cortex, whereas for the left frontal region, the spatial overlap was limited. Our results suggest that for conceptual‐lexical retrieval, alpha and beta oscillations do not dissociate and, thus, are distinct from the classical sensorimotor alpha and beta.

The Semantics of Natural Objects and Tools in the Brain: A Combined Behavioral and MEG Study

Current literature supports the notion that the recognition of objects, when visually presented, is sub-served by neural structures different from those responsible for the semantic processing of their nouns. However, embodiment foresees that processing observed objects and their verbal labels should share similar neural mechanisms. In a combined behavioral and MEG study, we compared the modulation of motor responses and cortical rhythms during the processing of graspable natural objects and tools, either verbally or pictorially presented. Our findings demonstrate that conveying meaning to an observed object or processing its noun similarly modulates both motor responses and cortical rhythms; being natural graspable objects and tools differently represented in the brain, they affect in a different manner both behavioral and MEG findings, independent of presentation modality. These results provide experimental evidence that neural substrates responsible for conveying meaning to objects overlap with those where the object is represented, thus supporting an embodied view of semantic processing.

Using Brain-Computer Interface to Control a Virtual Drone Using Non-Invasive Motor Imagery and Machine Learning

In recent years, the control of devices “by the power of the mind” has become a very controversial topic but has also been very well researched in the field of state-of-the-art gadgets, such as smartphones, laptops, tablets and even smart TVs, and also in medicine, to be used by people with disabilities for whom these technologies may be the only way to communicate with the outside world. It is well known that BCI control is a skill and can be improved through practice and training. This paper aims to improve and diversify signal processing methods for the implementation of a brain-computer interface (BCI) based on neurological phenomena recorded during motor tasks using motor imagery (MI). The aim of the research is to extract, select and classify the characteristics of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which are based on sensorimotor rhythms, for the implementation of BCI systems. This article investigates systems based on brain-computer interfaces, especially those that use the electroencephalogram as a method of acquisition of MI tasks. The purpose of this article is to allow users to manipulate quadcopter virtual structures (external, robotic objects) simply through brain activity, correlated with certain mental tasks using undecimal transformation (UWT) to reduce noise, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) together with determination coefficient (r2) and, for classification, a hybrid neural network consisting of Radial Basis Functions (RBF) and a multilayer perceptron–recurrent network (MLP–RNN), obtaining a classification accuracy of 95.5%. Following the tests performed, it can be stated that the use of biopotentials in human–computer interfaces is a viable method for applications in the field of BCI. The results presented show that BCI training can produce a rapid change in behavioral performance and cognitive properties. If more than one training session is used, the results may be beneficial for increasing poor cognitive performance. To achieve this goal, three steps were taken: understanding the functioning of BCI systems and the neurological phenomena involved; acquiring EEG signals based on sensorimotor rhythms recorded during MI tasks; applying and optimizing extraction methods, selecting and classifying characteristics using neuronal networks.

Effects of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS) on Action Planning: A Behavioural and EEG study

Action planning is an important decision-making process, which can be specially affected by environment. Response selection during action planning has been demonstrated to be modulated by tVNS. Therefore, tVNS shows a great potential for modulating the action planning process. We aimed to explore the tVNS-induced effect on action planning in behavioural and electrophysiology. Twenty-eight participants were randomly divided into two groups (active group and sham group). A single-blind, sham-controlled between-subject design was applied to explore the effect of online-tVNS (i.e., tVNS overlapping with the task) on action planning paradigm. We measured and compared reaction time (RT) and movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) before and after tVNS between active and sham groups. As compared to sham group, for the ipsilateral hand/contralateral hemisphere relative to the stimulated side, active tVNS significantly reduced the reaction time and decreased the MRCP amplitude mainly in the challenging tasks. Our results indicate that tVNS can produce a lateralization effect on action planning, especially plays an important role in the more challenging tasks as reflected both in the behavioural and electrophysiological results.

Gymnasts' Ability to Modulate Sensorimotor Rhythms During Kinesthetic Motor Imagery of Sports Non-specific Movements Superior to Non-gymnasts

Previous psychological studies using questionnaires have consistently reported that athletes have superior motor imagery ability, both for sports-specific and for sports-non-specific movements. However, regarding motor imagery of sports-non-specific movements, no physiological studies have demonstrated differences in neural activity between athletes and non-athletes. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in sensorimotor rhythms during kinesthetic motor imagery (KMI) of sports-non-specific movements between gymnasts and non-gymnasts. We selected gymnasts as an example population because they are likely to have particularly superior motor imagery ability due to frequent usage of motor imagery, including KMI as part of daily practice. Healthy young participants (16 gymnasts and 16 non-gymnasts) performed repeated motor execution and KMI of sports-non-specific movements (wrist dorsiflexion and shoulder abduction of the dominant hand). Scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded over the contralateral sensorimotor cortex. During motor execution and KMI, sensorimotor EEG power is known to decrease in the α- (8–15 Hz) and β-bands (16–35 Hz), referred to as event-related desynchronization (ERD). We calculated the maximal peak of ERD both in the α- (αERDmax) and β-bands (βERDmax) as a measure of changes in corticospinal excitability. αERDmax was significantly greater in gymnasts, who subjectively evaluated their KMI as being more vivid in the psychological questionnaire. On the other hand, βERDmax was greater in gymnasts only for shoulder abduction KMI. These findings suggest gymnasts' signature of flexibly modulating sensorimotor rhythms with no movements, which may be the basis of their superior ability of KMI for sports-non-specific movements.

Audiovisual incongruence differentially impacts left and right hemisphere sensorimotor oscillations: Potential applications to production

Speech production gives rise to distinct auditory and somatosensory feedback signals which are dynamically integrated to enable online monitoring and error correction, though it remains unclear how the sensorimotor system supports the integration of these multimodal signals. Capitalizing on the parity of sensorimotor processes supporting perception and production, the current study employed the McGurk paradigm to induce multimodal sensory congruence/incongruence. EEG data from a cohort of 39 typical speakers were decomposed with independent component analysis to identify bilateral mu rhythms; indices of sensorimotor activity. Subsequent time-frequency analyses revealed bilateral patterns of event related desynchronization (ERD) across alpha and beta frequency ranges over the time course of perceptual events. Right mu activity was characterized by reduced ERD during all cases of audiovisual incongruence, while left mu activity was attenuated and protracted in McGurk trials eliciting sensory fusion. Results were interpreted to suggest distinct hemispheric contributions, with right hemisphere mu activity supporting a coarse incongruence detection process and left hemisphere mu activity reflecting a more granular level of analysis including phonological identification and incongruence resolution. Findings are also considered in regard to incongruence detection and resolution processes during production.

Articulatory Gain Predicts Motor Cortex and Subthalamic Nucleus Activity During Speech

Speaking precisely is important for effective verbal communication, and articulatory gain is one component of speech motor control that contributes to achieving this goal. Given that the basal ganglia have been proposed to regulate the speed and size of limb movement, that is, movement gain, we explored the basal ganglia contribution to articulatory gain, through local field potentials (LFP) recorded simultaneously from the subthalamic nucleus (STN), precentral gyrus, and postcentral gyrus. During STN deep brain stimulation implantation for Parkinson's disease, participants read aloud consonant-vowel-consonant syllables. Articulatory gain was indirectly assessed using the F2 Ratio, an acoustic measurement of the second formant frequency of/i/vowels divided by/u/vowels. Mixed effects models demonstrated that the F2 Ratio correlated with alpha and theta activity in the precentral gyrus and STN. No correlations were observed for the postcentral gyrus. Functional connectivity analysis revealed that higher phase locking values for beta activity between the STN and precentral gyrus were correlated with lower F2 Ratios, suggesting that higher beta synchrony impairs articulatory precision. Effects were not related to disease severity. These data suggest that articulatory gain is encoded within the basal ganglia-cortical loop.

Mental individuation of imagined finger movements can be achieved using TMS-based neurofeedback

Neurofeedback (NF) in combination with motor imagery (MI) can be used for training individuals to volitionally modulate sensorimotor activity without producing overt movements. However, until now, NF methods were of limited utility for mentally training specific hand and finger actions. Here we employed a novel transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) based protocol to probe and detect MI-induced motor activity patterns in the primary motor cortex (M1) with the aim to reinforce selective facilitation of single finger representations. We showed that TMS-NF training but not MI training with uninformative feedback enabled participants to selectively upregulate corticomotor excitability of one finger, while simultaneously downregulating excitability of other finger representations within the same hand. Successful finger individuation during MI was accompanied by strong desynchronization of sensorimotor brain rhythms, particularly in the beta band, as measured by electroencephalography. Additionally, informative TMS-NF promoted more dissociable EEG activation patterns underlying single finger MI, when compared to MI of the control group where no such feedback was provided. Our findings suggest that selective TMS-NF is a new approach for acquiring the ability of finger individuation even if no overt movements are performed. This might offer new treatment modality for rehabilitation after stroke or spinal cord injury.

Distinct modulation of mu and beta rhythm desynchronization during observation of embodied fake hand rotation

The rubber hand illusion (RHI) is a phenomenon whereby participants recognize a fake hand as their own. Studies have examined the effects of observing fake hand movements after the RHI on brain sensorimotor activity, although results remain controversial. To address these discrepancies, we investigated the effects of observation of fake hand rotation after the RHI on sensorimotor mu (μ: 8-13 Hz) and beta (β: 15-25 Hz) rhythm event-related desynchronization (ERD) using electroencephalography (EEG). Questionnaire results and proprioceptive drift revealed that the RHI occurred in participants when their invisible hand and fake visible hand were stroked synchronously but not during asynchronous stroking. Independent component (IC) clustering from EEG data during movement observation identified three IC clusters, including the right sensorimotor, left sensorimotor, and left occipital cluster. In the right sensorimotor cluster, we observed distinct modulation of μ and β ERD during fake hand rotation. Illusory ownership over the fake hand enhanced μ ERD but inversely attenuated β ERD. Further, the extent of μ ERD correlated with proprioceptive drift, but not with questionnaire ratings, whereas the converse results were obtained for β ERD. No ownership-dependent ERD modulation was detected in the left sensorimotor cluster. Alpha (α: 8-13 Hz) rhythm ERD of the left occipital cluster was smaller in the synchronous condition than in the asynchronous condition, but α ERD was not correlated with questionnaire rating or drift. These findings suggest that observing embodied fake hand rotation induces distinct cortical processing in sensorimotor brain areas.

Sensorimotor contributions to working memory differ between the discrimination of Same and Different syllable pairs

Sensorimotor activity during speech perception is both pervasive and highly variable, changing as a function of the cognitive demands imposed by the task. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate whether the discrimination of Same (matched) and Different (unmatched) syllable pairs elicit different patterns of sensorimotor activity as stimuli are processed in working memory. Raw EEG data recorded from 42 participants were decomposed with independent component analysis to identify bilateral sensorimotor mu rhythms from 36 subjects. Time frequency decomposition of mu rhythms revealed concurrent event related desynchronization (ERD) in alpha and beta frequency bands across the peri- and post-stimulus time periods, which were interpreted as evidence of sensorimotor contributions to working memory encoding and maintenance. Left hemisphere alpha/beta ERD was stronger in Different trials than Same trials during the post-stimulus period, while right hemisphere alpha/beta ERD was stronger in Same trials than Different trials. A between-hemispheres contrast revealed no differences during Same trials, while post-stimulus alpha/beta ERD was stronger in the left hemisphere than the right during Different trials. Results were interpreted to suggest that predictive coding mechanisms lead to repetition suppression effects in Same trials. Mismatches arising from predictive coding mechanisms in Different trials shift subsequent working memory processing to the speech-dominant left hemisphere. Findings clarify how sensorimotor activity differentially supports working memory encoding and maintenance stages during speech discrimination tasks and have potential to inform sensorimotor models of speech perception and working memory.

Dynamic modulation of cortico-muscular coupling during real and imagined sensorimotor synchronisation

People have a natural and intrinsic ability to coordinate body movements with rhythms surrounding them, known as sensorimotor synchronisation. This can be observed in daily environments, when dancing or singing along with music, or spontaneously walking, talking or applauding in synchrony with one another. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying accurately synchronised movement with selected rhythms in the environment remain unclear. Here we studied real and imagined sensorimotor synchronisation with interleaved auditory and visual rhythms using cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) to better understand the processes underlying the preparation and execution of synchronised movement. Electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG) from the finger flexors, and continuous force signals were recorded in 20 participants during tapping and imagined tapping with discrete stimulus sequences consisting of alternating auditory beeps and visual flashes. The results show that the synchronisation between cortical and muscular activity in the beta (14-38 Hz) frequency band becomes time-locked to the taps executed in synchrony with the visual and auditory stimuli. Dynamic modulation in CMC also occurred when participants imagined tapping with the visual stimuli, but with lower amplitude and a different temporal profile compared to real tapping. These results suggest that CMC does not only reflect changes related to the production of the synchronised movement, but also to its preparation, which appears heightened under higher attentional demands imposed when synchronising with the visual stimuli. These findings highlight a critical role of beta band neural oscillations in the cortical-muscular coupling underlying sensorimotor synchronisation.

Mu oscillations and motor imagery performance: A reflection of intra-individual success, not inter-individual ability

Mu oscillations (8-13 Hz), recorded over the human motor cortex, have been shown to consistently suppress during both the imagination and performance of movements; however, its functional significance in the imagery process is currently unclear. Here we examined human electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillations in the context of motor imagery performance as measured by imagery success within participants and imagery ability between participants. We recorded continuous EEG activity while participants performed the Test of Ability in Movement Imagery (TAMI), an objective test of motor imagery task. Results demonstrated that mu oscillatory activity significantly decreased during successful as compared to unsuccessful imagery trials. However, the extent of reduction in mu oscillations did not correlate with overall imagery ability as measured by the total TAMI score. These findings provide further support for the involvement of mu oscillations in indexing motor imagery performance and suggest that mu oscillations may reflect important processes related to imagery accuracy, processes likely related to those underlying overt motor production and motor understanding.

Examining the neural antecedents of tics in Tourette syndrome using electroencephalography

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the occurrence of motor and vocal tics. TS is associated with cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical circuit dysfunction and hyper-excitability of cortical limbic and motor regions that lead to the occurrence of tics. Importantly, individuals with TS often report that their tics are preceded by premonitory sensory/urge phenomena (PU) that are described as uncomfortable bodily sensations that precede the execution of a tic and are experienced as an urge for motor discharge. While tics are most often referred to as involuntary movements, it has been argued by some that tics should be viewed as voluntary movements that are executed in response to the presence of PU. To investigate this issue further, we conducted a study using electroencephalography (EEG). We recorded movement-related EEG (mu- and beta-band oscillations) during (1) the immediate period leading up to the execution of voluntary movements by a group of individuals with TS and a group of matched healthy control participants, and (2) the immediate period leading up to the execution of a tic in a group of individuals with TS. We demonstrate that movement-related mu and beta oscillations are not reliably observed prior to tics in individuals with TS. We interpret this effect as reflecting the greater involvement of a network of brain areas, including the insular and cingulate cortices, the basal ganglia and the cerebellum, in the generation of tics in TS. We also show that beta-band desynchronization does occur when individuals with TS initiate voluntary movements, but, in contrast to healthy controls, desynchronization of mu-band oscillations is not observed during the execution of voluntary movements for individuals with TS. We interpret this finding as reflecting a dysfunction of physiological inhibition in TS, thereby contributing to an impaired ability to suppress neuronal populations that may compete with movement preparation processes.

Movement-related changes in pallidocortical synchrony differentiate action execution and observation in humans

OBJECTIVE

Suppression of local and network alpha and beta oscillations in the human basal ganglia-thalamocortical (BGTC) circuit is a prominent feature of movement, including suppression of local alpha/beta power, cross-region beta phase coupling, and cortical and subcortical phase-amplitude coupling (PAC). We hypothesized that network-level coupling is more directly related to movement execution than local power changes, given the role of pathological network hypersynchrony in movement disorders such as Parkinson disease (PD). Understanding the specificity of these movement-related signals is important for designing novel therapeutics.

METHODS

We recorded globus pallidus internus (GPi) and motor cortical local field potentials during movement execution, passive movement observation and rest in 12 patients with PD undergoing deep brain stimulator implantation.

RESULTS

Local alpha/beta power is suppressed in the globus pallidus and motor cortex during both action execution and action observation, although less so during action observation. In contrast, pallidocortical phase synchrony and GPi and motor cortical alpha/beta-gamma PAC are suppressed only during action execution.

CONCLUSIONS

The functional dissociation across tasks in pallidocortical network activity suggests a particularly important role of network coupling in motor execution.

SIGNIFICANCE

Network level recordings provide important specificity in differentiating motor behavior and may provide significant value for future closed loop therapies.

Improved cortical activity and reduced gait asymmetry during poststroke self-paced walking rehabilitation

Background

For patients with gait impairment due to neurological disorders, body weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT) has been widely used for gait rehabilitation. On a conventional (passive) treadmill that runs at a constant speed, however, the level of patient engagement and cortical activity decreased compared with gait training on the ground. To increase the level of cognitive engagement and brain activity during gait rehabilitation, a self-paced (active) treadmill is introduced to allow patients to actively control walking speed, as with overground walking.

Methods

To validate the effects of self-paced treadmill walking on cortical activities, this paper presents a clinical test with stroke survivors. We hypothesized that cortical activities on the affected side of the brain would also increase during active walking because patients have to match the target walking speed with the affected lower limbs. Thus, asymmetric gait patterns such as limping or hobbling might also decrease during active walking.

Results

Although the clinical test was conducted in a short period, the patients showed higher cognitive engagement, improved brain activities assessed by electroencephalography (EEG), and decreased gait asymmetry with the self-paced treadmill. As expected, increases in the spectral power of the low γ and β bands in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), premotor cortex (PMC), and supramarginal gyrus (SG) were found, which are possibly related to processing sensory data and planning voluntary movements. In addition, these changes in cortical activities were also found with the affected lower limbs during the swing phase. Since our treadmill controller tracked the swing speed of the leg to control walking speed, such results imply that subjects made substantial effort to control their affected legs in the swing phase to match the target walking speed.

Conclusions

The patients also showed reduced gait asymmetry patterns. Based on the results, the self-paced gait training system has the potential to train the symmetric gait and to promote the related cortical activities after stroke.

Development of a Guidance System for Motor Imagery Enhancement Using the Virtual Hand Illusion

Motor imagery (MI) is widely used to produce input signals for brain-computer interfaces (BCI) due to the similarities between MI-BCI and the planning-execution cycle. Despite its usefulness, MI tasks can be ambiguous to users and MI produces weaker cortical signals than motor execution. Existing MI guidance systems, which have been reported to provide visual guidance for MI and enhance MI, still have limitations: insufficient immersion for MI or poor expandability to MI for another body parts. We propose a guidance system for MI enhancement that can immerse users in MI and will be easy to extend to other body parts and target motions with few physical constraints. To make easily extendable MI guidance system, the virtual hand illusion is applied to the MI guidance system with a motion tracking sensor. MI enhancement was evaluated in 11 healthy people by comparison with another guidance system and conventional motor commands for BCI. The results showed that the proposed MI guidance system produced an amplified cortical signal compared to pure MI (p < 0.017), and a similar cortical signal as those produced by both actual execution (p > 0.534) and an MI guidance system with the rubber hand illusion (p > 0.722) in the contralateral region. Therefore, we believe that the proposed MI guidance system with the virtual hand illusion is a viable alternative to existing MI guidance systems in various applications with MI-BCI.

Representation Learning for Motor Imagery Recognition with Deep Neural Network

This study describes a method for classifying electrocorticograms (ECoGs) based on motor imagery (MI) on the brain–computer interface (BCI) system. This method is different from the traditional feature extraction and classification method. In this paper, the proposed method employs the deep learning algorithm for extracting features and the traditional algorithm for classification. Specifically, we mainly use the convolution neural network (CNN) to extract the features from the training data and then classify those features by combing with the gradient boosting (GB) algorithm. The comprehensive study with CNN and GB algorithms will profoundly help us to obtain more feature information from brain activities, enabling us to obtain the classification results from human body actions. The performance of the proposed framework has been evaluated on the dataset I of BCI Competition III. Furthermore, the combination of deep learning and traditional algorithms provides some ideas for future research with the BCI systems.

EEG-Based Measures in At-Risk Mental State and Early Stages of Schizophrenia: A Systematic Review

Introduction: Electrophysiological (EEG) abnormalities in subjects with schizophrenia have been largely reported. In the last decades, research has shifted to the identification of electrophysiological alterations in the prodromal and early phases of the disorder, focusing on the prediction of clinical and functional outcome. The identification of neuronal aberrations in subjects with a first episode of psychosis (FEP) and in those at ultra high-risk (UHR) or clinical high-risk (CHR) to develop a psychosis is crucial to implement adequate interventions, reduce the rate of transition to psychosis, as well as the risk of irreversible functioning impairment. The aim of the review is to provide an up-to-date synthesis of the electrophysiological findings in the at-risk mental state and early stages of schizophrenia. Methods: A systematic review of English articles using Pubmed, Scopus, and PsychINFO was undertaken in July 2020. Additional studies were identified by hand-search. Electrophysiological studies that included at least one group of FEP or subjects at risk to develop psychosis, compared to healthy controls (HCs), were considered. The heterogeneity of the studies prevented a quantitative synthesis. Results: Out of 319 records screened, 133 studies were included in a final qualitative synthesis. Included studies were mainly carried out using frequency analysis, microstates and event-related potentials. The most common findings included an increase in delta and gamma power, an impairment in sensory gating assessed through P50 and N100 and a reduction of Mismatch Negativity and P300 amplitude in at-risk mental state and early stages of schizophrenia. Progressive changes in some of these electrophysiological measures were associated with transition to psychosis and disease course. Heterogeneous data have been reported for indices evaluating synchrony, connectivity, and evoked-responses in different frequency bands. Conclusions: Multiple EEG-indices were altered during at-risk mental state and early stages of schizophrenia, supporting the hypothesis that cerebral network dysfunctions appear already before the onset of the disorder. Some of these alterations demonstrated association with transition to psychosis or poor functional outcome. However, heterogeneity in subjects' inclusion criteria, clinical measures and electrophysiological methods prevents drawing solid conclusions. Large prospective studies are needed to consolidate findings concerning electrophysiological markers of clinical and functional outcome.

Motor Cortical Activity during Observing a Video of Real Hand Movements versus Computer Graphic Hand Movements: An MEG Study

Both action observation (AO) and virtual reality (VR) provide visual stimuli to trigger brain activations during the observation of actions. However, the mechanism of observing video movements performed by a person's real hand versus that performed by a computer graphic hand remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the differences in observing the video of real versus computer graphic hand movements on primary motor cortex (M1) activation by magnetoencephalography. Twenty healthy adults completed 3 experimental conditions: the resting state, the video of real hand movements (VRH), and the video of computer graphic hand movements (CGH) conditions with the intermittent electrical stimuli simultaneously applied to the median nerve by an electrical stimulator. The beta oscillatory activity (~20 Hz) in the M1 was collected, lower values indicating greater activations. To compare the beta oscillatory activities among the 3 conditions, the Friedman test with Bonferroni correction (p-value < 0.017 indicating statistical significance) were used. The beta oscillatory activities of the VRH and CGH conditions were significantly lower than that of the resting state condition. No significant difference in the beta oscillatory activity was found between the VRH and CGH conditions. Observing hand movements in a video performed by a real hand and those by a computer graphic hand evoked comparable M1 activations in healthy adults. This study provides some neuroimaging support for the use of AO and VR in rehabilitation, but no differential activations were found.

Brain-controlled cycling system for rehabilitation following paraplegia with delay-time prediction

Objective.Robotic rehabilitation systems have been investigated to assist with motor dysfunction recovery in patients with lower-extremity paralysis caused by central nervous system lesions. These systems are intended to provide appropriate sensory feedback associated with locomotion. Appropriate feedback is thought to cause synchronous neuron firing, resulting in the recovery of function.Approach.In this study, we designed and evaluated an ergometric cycling wheelchair, with a brain-machine interface (BMI), that can force the legs to move by including normal stepping speeds and quick responses. Experiments were conducted in five healthy subjects and one patient with spinal cord injury (SCI), who experienced the complete paralysis of the lower limbs. Event-related desynchronization (ERD) in the β band (18-28 Hz) was used to detect lower-limb motor images.Main results.An ergometer-based BMI system was able to safely and easily force patients to perform leg movements, at a rate of approximately 1.6 seconds/step (19 rpm), with an online accuracy rate of 73.1% for the SCI participant. Mean detection time from the cue to pedaling onset was 0.83±0.31 s.Significance.This system can easily and safely maintain a normal walking speed during the experiment and be designed to accommodate the expected delay between the intentional onset and physical movement, to achieve rehabilitation effects for each participant. Similar BMI systems, implemented with rehabilitation systems, may be applicable to a wide range of patients.

Gesture's body orientation modulates the N400 for visual sentences primed by gestures

Body orientation of gesture entails social-communicative intention, and may thus influence how gestures are perceived and comprehended together with auditory speech during face-to-face communication. To date, despite the emergence of neuroscientific literature on the role of body orientation on hand action perception, limited studies have directly investigated the role of body orientation in the interaction between gesture and language. To address this research question, we carried out an electroencephalography (EEG) experiment presenting to participants (n = 21) videos of frontal and lateral communicative hand gestures of 5 s (e.g., raising a hand), followed by visually presented sentences that are either congruent or incongruent with the gesture (e.g., "the mountain is high/low…"). Participants underwent a semantic probe task, judging whether a target word is related or unrelated to the gesture-sentence event. EEG results suggest that, during the perception phase of handgestures, while both frontal and lateral gestures elicited a power decrease in both the alpha (8-12 Hz) and the beta (16-24 Hz) bands, lateral versus frontal gestures elicited reduced power decrease in the beta band, source-located to the medial prefrontal cortex. For sentence comprehension, at the critical word whose meaning is congruent/incongruent with the gesture prime, frontal gestures elicited an N400 effect for gesture-sentence incongruency. More importantly, this incongruency effect was significantly reduced for lateral gestures. These findings suggest that body orientation plays an important role in gesture perception, and that its inferred social-communicative intention may influence gesture-language interaction at semantic level.
