Abstract
In 2022, healthy sleep was included as part of Life's Essential 8, which are a cluster of fundamental factors for cardiovascular health. In many studies, sleep duration and/or quality have also been found to be related to human health. The purpose of this narrative review was to present the relationship between the Mediterranean diet, the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, and the MIND (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet and sleep quality and duration in different populations. A literature search was conducted based on the phrases "Mediterranean diet", "DASH diet", and "MIND diet" appearing together with "sleep" or "insomnia" in papers' titles or abstracts. Studies on obstructive sleep apnea or shift work were excluded. The electronic databases were searched via EBSCOhost. Main results: The vast majority of studies showed that there was a beneficial association between the three diets discussed in this review and sleep duration and/or quality; however, most of these results were obtained in cross-sectional analyses. There were only a few studies in which an association between sleep parameters and these diets was not observed. Direction for future studies: Taking into account the significant role of adequate sleep quality in various diseases, even in all-cause mortality, the implementation of randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies seems to be necessary to provide further evidence that would allow these associations to be confirmed. In conclusion, the results obtained so far in various populations strongly suggest that healthy dietary patterns abundant in plant foods, are associated with better sleep quality, as well as with a more adequate length of sleep.

Abstract
While inflammation is a known beneficial mechanism, pro-inflammatory nutrients can lead to chronic inflammation. The energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) has revealed positive associations with chronic inflammatory diseases. However, more evidence about the demographic risk factors for high E-DII is needed. Therefore, the present study reviewed the high-risk groups of people for high E-DII scores. Men had higher E-DII than women worldwide, which could be explained by the craving for energy induced by stress and higher physical activity. However, in some societies, women had higher consumption of a pro-inflammatory diet, which could be induced by compulsive eating and craving for more sweets and carbohydrates during menstruation and also can be seen among women with premenopausal syndrome. The pro-inflammatory diets were more common among elders in southern America, East Asia, and Arab countries, while some other studies had contradictory results. The proliferation of unhealthy foods, such as fast food and Western dietary patterns enriched with a pro-inflammatory diet, increased youth's E-DII and decreased the healthy eating index among older people. Also, smokers and alcoholics tended to consume a diet with a higher E-DII, which should be investigated in further studies. Black people consumed the most pro-inflammatory diets compared with White people, especially in pregnant women. Education had a negative association with E-DII, while socioeconomic status was positively associated with a pro-inflammatory diet. Therefore, E-DII consumption had no association with access to healthy foods but is more associated with knowledge and cultural dietary habits. Moreover, further nutritional interventions are required to educate the vulnerable populations and also provide better availability of healthy food enriched with anti-inflammatory nutrients in the future.

Abstract
Background Asthma, depression, and sleep problems are three significant public health issues that are closely interrelated. This study aims to explore the relationship between depression, sleep status and asthma, as well as the potential interaction among these conditions and their effects on asthma. Method This cross-sectional study utilized data from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, including information on asthma, depression, sleep status and confounding factors. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between depression, sleep status, and asthma. Subgroup analyses were conducted to test the p-interaction between depression and each stratified variable. Additionally, both multiplicative and additive approaches were employed to assess the interaction between depression and sleep status on asthma, as well as to quantify their combined effects. Results A total of 8,327 participants (mean age 46.53 years) were included in this study. Compared to the individuals without depression, those with depression have an increased risk of asthma [Odds ratio (OR) = 1.57, 95% Confidence interval (CI) = 1.22-2.03], and an increase in the severity of depressive symptoms is associated with a higher risk of developing asthma. Additionally, poor sleep quality, sleep disorders, and insufficient sleep was associated with an increased risk of asthma. Effect modification was observed between depression and PIR status, smoking status, and sleep disorders in relation to asthma (p-interaction <0.05). Moreover, we found a positive interaction between severe depression and excessive sleep (OR = 29.07, 95% CI = 3.24-260.38). Furthermore, we observed the quantitative additive interaction indicators between moderately severe depression and insufficient sleep [Relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) = 1.63, 95%CI = 0.18-3.83; Attributable proportion (AP) = 0.51, 95%CI = 0.15-0.87; Synergy index (SI) = 3.92, 95%CI = 1.65-23.50] influencing asthma risk. Conclusion Our study revealed distinct associations between depression, the severity of depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, sleep disorders, and insufficient sleep with asthma. Additionally, there was an interaction between moderately severe depression and insufficient sleep on asthma. Psychological and sleep assessment are essential in asthma management. Clinicians should consider the potential risk of depression and sleep problems in asthma patients and intervene. Further longitudinal research is needed to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms behind the interactions between asthma, depression, and sleep problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to examine the relationship of 2 dietary scores [dietary inflammatory index (DII) and composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI)] with frailty in elderly adults with diabetes. METHODS Data were gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2018. The frailty index was calculated using 49 deficits across various systems to define frailty. To examine the relationship of 2 dietary scores (DII and CDAI) with frailty in elderly adults with diabetes, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. In logistic regression model, DII and CDAI were calculated as both continuous and tertiles. Subgroup analyses were performed to demonstrate stability of results. Restricted cubic splines were utilized to examine the non-linear correlations. RESULTS A total of 2,795 elderly adults with diabetes were included in this study. In the multivariate logistic regression model, the odds ratio (OR) of DII for risk of frailty was 1.08 (95% CI 1.02-1.15) and the OR of CDAI for risk of frailty was 0.96 (95% CI 0.93-0.99). The ORs of DII for risk of frailty were 1.36 (95% CI 1.09-1.70) and 1.33 (95% CI 1.04-1.70) for tertiles 2 and 3, respectively (p for trend 0.027). The ORs of CDAI for risk of frailty were 0.94 (95% CI 0.75-1.17) and 0.75 (95% CI 0.58-0.98) for tertiles 2 and 3, respectively (p for trend 0.036). The subgroup analysis demonstrated reliable and enduring connections between 2 dietary scores and frailty (all p for interaction > 0.05). In the restricted cubic spline analyses, we discovered the non-linear relationship between DII and frailty (P for nonlinearity = 0.045) and linear relationship between CDAI and frailty (P for nonlinearity = 0.769). CONCLUSION The research showed connections between 2 dietary scores (DII and CDAI) and frailty as measured by frailty index in elderly adults with diabetes.

Abstract
Sleep has strong inflammatory underpinnings and diet is one of the primary determinants of systemic inflammation. A systematic literature review was conducted to synthesize current research associating dietary inflammatory potential, as measured by the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) or the energy-adjusted DII (E-DII™) and sleep quality and duration. The National Library of Medicine (Medline), Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases were searched through March 2023. Studies must have used the DII/E-DII as the independent variable and sleep outcomes as dependent variables. Study characteristics, based on STROBE guidelines, were scored based on the presence of the recommendation. Out of the initial 14 studies identified, a total of 12 studies were included for data synthesis. In all 12 studies, more anti-inflammatory diets (i.e., low DII/E-DII scores) were associated with better sleep in at least one sleep domain (most often sleep efficiency and wake-after-sleep-onset). Among those studies with more rigorous diet and sleep measurements, such as dietary recalls and actigraphy, associations between DII/E-DII and sleep outcomes were stronger and more consistent compared to studies using primarily subjective assessments. More rigorous measurement of diet and sleep, especially those relating to sleep stage structure, should be considered in future studies with prospective designs.

Abstract
Recent studies suggest an association between greater dietary inflammatory index (DII) and higher biological ageing. As α-Klotho has been considered as a longevity protein, we examined whether α-Klotho plays a role in the association between DII and ageing. We included 3054 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The associations of DII with biological and phenotypic age were assessed by multivariable linear regression, and the mediating role of α-Klotho was evaluated by mediation analyses. Participants' mean age was 58·0 years (sd 11·0), with a median DII score of 1·85 and interquartile range from 0·44 to 2·79. After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, BMI, education, marital status, poverty income ratio, serum cotinine, alcohol, physical activity, a higher DII was associated with both older biological age and phenotypic age, with per DII score increment being associated with a 1·01-year increase in biological age (1·01 (95 % CI: 1·005, 1·02)) and 1·01-year increase in phenotypic age (1·01 (1·001, 1·02)). Negative associations of DII with α-Klotho (β = -1·01 pg/ml, 95 % CI: -1·02, -1·006) and α-Klotho with biological age (β= -1·07 years, 95 % CI: -1·13, -1·02) and phenotypic age (β= -1·03 years, 95 % CI: -1·05, -1·01) were found. Furthermore, α-Klotho mediated 10·13 % (P < 0·001) and 9·61 % (P < 0·001) of the association of DII with biological and phenotypic age, respectively. Higher DII was associated with older biological and phenotypic age, and the potential detrimental effects could be partly mediated through α-Klotho.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meal timing has been associated with metabolism and cardiovascular diseases; however, the relationship between meal timing and sleep quality remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the relationship between meal timing and sleep quality from a chronobiological perspective. METHODS This study utilized data from the NHANES for the years 2005-2008, including a cohort of 7,023 participants after applying exclusion criteria. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Meal timing was analyzed based on two 24-hour dietary recalls from each individual, considering the timing of the initial and final meals, meal duration, and frequency of meal occasions. Multiple linear regression models and hierarchical analyses were employed to examine the relationship between meal timing and PSQI scores, adjusting for various demographic and habitat covariates. RESULTS Statistical analysis revealed a positive correlation between delayed meal timings, increased meal occasions, and elevated PSQI scores, indicating that later meal timing are intricately linked with diminished sleep quality. Both later meal timings and more frequent meal occasions were significantly associated with poorer sleep quality. Compared to the first tertile, the β (95%CI) values of the third tertile were 0.545 (0.226, 0.864) for first meal timing, 0.586 (0.277, 0.896) for midpoint meal timing, 0.385 (0.090, 0.680) for last meal timing, and 0.332 (0.021, 0.642) for meal occasions in the adjusted models. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that late initial, midpoint, and final meal timing, as well as more frequent meal occasions, are chrono-nutrition patterns associated with poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Background Sleep is a vital physiological process that plays a crucial role in various aspects of human health and well-being. Regarding the important role of diet on the sleep quality, the present study aimed to assess the association of dietary inflammatory index (DII) with the sleep outcomes and also to provide the potential mechanisms of action. Methods PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases and Google Scholar search engine were systematically searched for relevant studies related to DII and sleep outcomes using appropriate search terms until February 2024. Results From the initial systematic search of databases, 197 studies were retrieved. However, only 14 of them met the criteria for evaluation. Out of these, eleven studies indicated a significant correlation between higher DII scores and poor overall sleep quality and/or short/long sleep duration or its subscales. On the contrary, four studies did not find any proof of this association. Conclusion This systematic review indicated that following an anti-inflammatory diet could potentially lead to an improvement in the sleep outcomes. Well-designed clinical trials in the future will be necessary to provide a better understanding and quantification of this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is prevalent in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and associated with adverse outcomes, while COPD is intricately linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD), sharing common risk factors. The controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score, a promising tool for assessing malnutrition, warrants investigation into its predictive ability for cardiovascular disease prevalence and mortality in COPD patients. METHODS Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study analyzed 1501 adult COPD patients from 1999 to 2018. The endpoints were CVD prevalence, mortality related to CVD, and overall mortality. We evaluated the correlation of the CONUT score with each outcome using logistic regression and Cox regression models. The prognostic evaluation of patients was conducted using Kaplan-Meier curves in accordance with the CONUT score. We formed the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for evaluating the CONUT score's discriminative capability. RESULTS The prevalence of malnutrition was 21.31% in COPD populations. Logistic analyses suggested a distinct connection between the CONUT score and CVD prevalence (OR:1.86, 95%CI:1.28-2.70) in individuals with COPD. The CONUT score demonstrated a significant correlation with a heightened risk of CVD mortality (HR: 1.86, 95%CI: 1.27-2.74) and overall mortality (HR: 1.50, 95%CI: 1.18-1.91). The prognostic outcomes might be effectively discriminated by the CONUT score, as seen by the Kaplan-Meier curves. CONCLUSIONS In summary, the CONUT score provides an uncomplicated and readily attainable marker for forecasting CVD prevalence, total mortality, and mortality from CVD among COPD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor cardiovascular health (CVH) and physical frailty were reported to increase mortality risk, but their joint effects have not been fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES We aimed to explore the separate and joint effects of CVH and frailty on mortality based on two perspectives of Life's Essential 8 (LE8) and Framingham Risk Score (FRS). METHODS 21 062 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018 were involved in this study. CVH was evaluated by the LE8 and FRS, and categorized into low, moderate and high CVH groups. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate the separate and joint associations of CVH and frailty index (FI) with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality. RESULTS Over a median follow-up period of 87 months (95% CI: 86.0-88.0), 2036 deaths occurred. The separate linear dose-response relationships between CVH, frailty and mortality were observed (nonlinear P > .05). The combination of low CVH/frailty was negatively associated with all-cause mortality [hazard ratio (HR) and 95%CI: low LE8*FI, 5.30 (3.74, 7.52); high FRS*FI, 4.34 (3.20, 5.88)], CVD mortality [low LE8*FI, 6.57 (3.54, 12.22); high FRS*FI, 7.29 (3.92, 13.55)] and cancer mortality [low LE8*FI, 1.99 (1.14, 3.25); high FRS*FI, 2.32 (1.30, 4.15)], with high CVH/fit group as reference. Further stratified analyses showed that the combined burden of mortality from frailty and low CVH was greater among the young and females. CONCLUSIONS Low CVH and frailty were independently and jointly correlated with greater risk of all-cause, CVD and cancer deaths, especially among the young and females.

Abstract
CONTEXT Dietary components or its overall properties can influence an individual's sleep status. OBJECTIVE The aim for this study was to critically search, appraise, and synthesize research evidence on the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and sleep quality and its parameters. DATA SOURCES Original published studies on adults were obtained from the PubMed, SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. DATA EXTRACTION The search was conducted without date limitation until April 2023. Duplicated and irrelevant investigations were screened out, and the results of the remaining articles were descriptively summarized, then critically appraised and analyzed. Possible mechanistic pathways regarding diet, systemic inflammation, and sleep status were discussed. DATA ANALYSIS Of the 102 studies searched, 23 articles (n = 4 cohort studies, 18 cross-sectional studies, and 1 intervention study) were included in the final review. The association between DII and sleep status was investigated subjectively in 21 studies and objectively in 6 studies. The main studied sleep outcomes were sleep quality, duration, latency, efficiency, apnea, disturbances, the use of sleeping medications, daytime dysfunctions, wakefulness after sleep onset, and rapid eye movement. CONCLUSIONS According to most of the evidence, DII may not be related to overall sleep quality, sleep duration, latency, efficiency, and the use of sleeping medications. The evidence of positive association was greater between a high DII score (pro-inflammatory diet) with daytime dysfunctions, wakefulness after sleep onset, and sleep apnea. There is insufficient evidence to make any conclusion regarding sleep disturbances and rapid eye movement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common neurologic disorder among elderly patients after non-cardiac surgery, which leads to various negative outcomes. Sleep disorder is considered an important cause of POD. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the Chinese traditional five-element music intervention could reduce POD by improving sleep quality in elderly patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. METHODS A total of 132 patients aged 65 to 90 years who underwent non-cardiac surgery were randomized to two groups: the intervention (n = 60) and the control group (n = 63). Patients in the intervention group were subjected to the Chinese traditional five-element music intervention during the perioperative, while patients in the control group had no music intervention. POD was evaluated using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) in the first 5 days after surgery. The Richards‒Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) was used to assess subjective sleep quality. The levels of nocturnal melatonin and cortisol in saliva were measured on the preoperative and the first 2 postoperative days. RESULTS The incidence of POD within 5 days was 27.0% in the control group and 11.7% in the intervention group. Preoperative PSQI and MMSE scores were associated with POD. The RCSQ scores on the first postoperative day were significantly decreased in the two groups compared to the preoperative day. Compared to the control group, the RCSQ scores showed a significant improvement in the intervention group on the first postoperative day. Compared to the control group, the level of saliva melatonin in the intervention group showed a significant increase on the first postoperative day. However, there was no statistical difference in cortisol levels between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Chinese traditional five-element music intervention decreased the incidence of POD in elderly patients who underwent noncardiac surgery via improving sleep quality, which may be associated with increased levels of melatonin.

Abstract
Socioeconomic status (SES) has been linked to mortality rates, with family income being a quantifiable marker of SES. However, the precise association between the family income-to-poverty ratio (PIR) and all-cause mortality in adults aged 40 and older remains unclear. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from NHANES III, including 20,497 individuals. The PIR was used to assess financial status, and various demographic, lifestyle, and clinical factors were considered. Mortality data were collected from the NHANES III linked mortality file. The study revealed a non-linear association between PIR and all-cause mortality. The piecewise Cox proportional hazards regression model showed an inflection point at PIR 3.5. Below this threshold, the hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality was 0.85 (95% CI 0.79-0.91), while above 3.5, the HR decreased to 0.66 (95% CI 0.57-0.76). Participants with lower income had a higher probability of all-cause mortality, with middle-income and high-income groups showing lower multivariate-adjusted HRs compared to the low-income group. This study provides evidence of a non-linear association between PIR and all-cause mortality in adults aged 40 and older, with an inflection point at PIR 3.5. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the non-linear relationship between family income and mortality when addressing socioeconomic health disparities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Diet and sleep represent key behavioral risk factors for major non-communicable diseases. Dietary factors may modulate systemic inflammation and potentially affect the human brain functionality, finally affecting the sleep-wake cycle. In this context, the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) has been studied as a tool to investigate the dietary inflammatory potential and its relationship with a variety of health conditions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic revision of observational studies on the inflammatory potential of the diet assessed through the DII and sleep features. METHODS: A systematic search of observational studies on DII and sleep features was conducted on Pubmed and EMBASE electronic databases. The Meta-analyses Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines were used to plan the methodology. Studies identified through the search were selected according to inclusion/exclusion criteria. RESULTS: The systematic search and review led to the selection of 13 studies. Most studies including the general population reported an association between higher inflammatory potential of the diet and worse sleep quality and suboptimal sleep duration. Some studies also reported an association with daytime sleepiness and sleep apnea. However, some studies including younger individuals (i.e., college students or young employees) reported null findings. Four studies conducted in individuals with a variety of health conditions also showed some relation between DII and sleep features, although results were not fully consistent. CONCLUSIONS: Data published so far suggests an association between DII and sleep features. However, lack of randomized clinical trials and better designed observational studies, imply that further research on this matter is warranted to understand whether a causal relation could explain current findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study aimed to assess the independent and interactive association of energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) and physical activity (PA) with sleep quality. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted on the 2466 participants (60% women). A 116-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was applied to calculate E-DII, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) long form for PA, and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality were collected via interview. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to assess independent and interactive associations of E-DII and PA with sleep quality. RESULT No significant association was observed between E-DII and sleep quality (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.92_1.01). Also, there was no significant association between the levels of PA and sleep quality. Women had 70% increased odds for poor sleep quality (OR: 1.7, 95% CI: 1.39_2.09) compared with men. No interactive association was observed between E-DII and PA levels with sleep quality. CONCLUSION No significant association was observed between E-DII and PA levels with sleep quality. The study indicates a gender difference in sleep quality. Future prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and insulin resistance (IR) in underweight and healthy weight adults. This cross-sectional study involved 3205 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018. All dietary data used to calculate the DII were obtained based on the average of two 24-h dietary recall interviews. Participants were divided into an anti-inflammatory diet group and a pro-inflammatory diet group based on DII < 0 and DII ≥ 0, respectively. Fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin data used to calculate IR index (HOMA-IR) were from laboratory data in the NHANES database. According to the linear regression analysis results of DII and HOMA-IR, we found that there was a positive relationship between DII and IR. A positive association between DII and HOMA-IR was seen in the following groups after stratification: by age in 20-39-year olds, by sex in males, by race in Non-Hispanic Whites, by family history of diabetes in those without a family history of diabetes, by education level in those with high school education, by smoking status in current smokers and non-smokers, by hypertension in those with hypertension, by BMI in those with a BMI of 18.5-24.99, by hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) in those without HTG, by poverty impact ratio (PIR) in those with PIR ≤ 1.3 and >1.3, and by physical activity in those with moderate recreational activities. In conclusion, in underweight and healthy weight adults, DII was positively correlated with the risk of IR.

Abstract
Tungsten (W) is an emerging contaminant that can damage multiple systems in humans. However, studies of its effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) are limited. The monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) is a composite inflammatory index of great concern in recent years, derived from lipid and cell inflammation parameters, that is used to indicate the risk of CVD. This study aimed to investigate the association between urinary W and CVD in the general population and compare the mediating effects of lipids, cell inflammatory parameters, and MHR to find a better target for intervention. We analyzed data from 9137 (≥ 20 years) participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), from 2005 to 2018. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) and survey-weighted generalized linear models (SWGLMs) were used to assess the relationship between W and CVD. Mediated analyses were used to explore lipids, cell inflammatory parameters, and MHR in the possible mediating pathways between W and CVD. In SWGLM, we found that W enhances the risk of CVD, especially congestive heart failure (CHF), coronary heart disease (CHD), and angina pectoris (AP). Women, higher age groups (≥ 55 years), and those with hypertension were vulnerable to W in the subgroup analysis. Mediation analysis showed that monocyte count (MC), white blood cell count (WBC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and MHR played a mediating role between W and CVD in proportions of 8.49%, 3.70%, 5.18%, and 12.95%, respectively. In conclusion, our study shows that urinary W can increase the risk of CVD, especially for CHF, CHD, and AP. Women, older age groups, and people with hypertension seem to be more vulnerable to W. In addition, MC, WBC, HDL, and MHR mediated the association between W and CVD, especially MHR, which suggests that we should consider it as a priority intervention target in the future.

Abstract
Aims: The underlying mechanism of both sleep disorders and frailty is chronic inflammation, which can be reflected by the dietary inflammatory index (DII). Therefore, we aimed to explore the association between sleep quality, frailty, and dietary inflammation. Methods: 9007 participants aged over 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2005-2008 were involved in the study. Dietary inflammation was assessed by DII, sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and frailty was assessed by the 36-item frailty index (FI). Logistic regression, stratified analysis of sub-groups, and forest plots were used in this study. Results: Both pro-inflammatory diet and poor sleep quality were risk factors for frailty. There was an interaction between dietary inflammation and sleep quality (P-interaction = 0.003). Pro-inflammatory diet was associated with increased risk of frailty among the population with poor sleep quality. Compared with the anti-inflammatory diet and good sleep quality group, the OR of frailty was 1.44 (1.21, 1.73) and 2.16 (1.64, 2.80) for the anti-inflammatory diet and poor sleep quality and pro-inflammatory diet and poor sleep quality groups, respectively. Conclusion: There was an interaction between dietary inflammation and sleep quality on frailty. Anti-inflammatory diet may attenuate the detrimental impacts of poor sleep quality on frailty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between vitamin D status and gestational cardiovascular health (CVH) is inconsistent in previous studies. Emerging evidence shows that sleep behaviors are related to vitamin D metabolism. However, no studies evaluate the interaction of vitamin D and sleep behaviors on gestational CVH. OBJECTIVE We aimed to estimate the relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and gestational CVH, and whether the relationship was modified by sleep behaviors. METHODS The data of this study was from a multicenter birth cohort study. A total of 9,209 pregnant women at 16-23 weeks of gestation were included. 25(OH)D concentrations were measured from collected blood. Sleep patterns consisted of major sleep behaviors including duration, chronotype, insomnia, snoring, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Data on poor CVH was based on four "clinical" CVH metrics, including body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and glucose levels. RESULTS The proportion of women with poor CVH was 25.0%. The relative risk (RR) (95%CI) of poor CVH was 0.67 (0.58-0.76) in women with 25(OH)D ≥ 50 nmol/L after multivariate adjustments. Lower 25(OH)D concentrations were significantly associated with poor CVH. Such association was also evident in subgroups analysis. We found a significant interaction of 25(OH)D (P for interaction = 0.01) with sleep patterns on the risk of poor CVH. A negative dose-response relation was observed between 25(OH)D concentrations and poor CVH risk in healthy or intermediate sleep, not poor sleep. 25(OH)D concentrations were lower and the risk of poor CVH was higher in pregnant women with poor sleep patterns (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that sleep patterns modify the association of 25(OH)D concentrations with the CVH among pregnant women.

Abstract
Background Physical activity plays a key role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, previous studies focused predominantly on the associations of the total amount of physical activity with CVD. There were few evidences on the associations of specific sport disciplines with CVD. Furthermore, little was known on the interactions between the different types of sports on CVD risk. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the independent associations of specific types of physical activities with the 10-year risk of CVD, and further evaluate the interactions between specific types of physical activities on the 10-year risk of CVD in US adults. Methods This study used the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2006. Participants aged ≥ 30 years and with free of CVD were eligible. The physical activity questionnaire is used to collect general information on leisure-time activities in the past 30 days, including the frequency, duration, and intensity of participation in each activity. The exposures of interest included cycling, swimming, aerobics, running, American Football, basketball, and racquet sports. The Framingham risk score algorithm was used to assess 10-year CVD risk based on age, high density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, smoking status, and diabetes. A higher total score reflects a greater risk of CVD. Results This study included 10829 participants. Compared to no participation, participation in cycling (β = −0.890, 95% CI:−1.278,−0.502, P < 0.001), running (β = −1.466, 95% CI:−1.837,−1.095, P < 0.001), American Football (β = −2.934, 95% CI:−3.750,−2.119, P < 0.001), basketball (β = −1.968, 95% CI:−2.645,−1.291, P < 0.001), and aerobics (β = −0.980, 95% CI:−1.352,−0.608, P < 0.001) was associated with a lower CVD risk. Furthermore, cycling was antagonistic with basketball and racquet sports in the associations with CVD risk. An antagonistic action between swimming and aerobics was also observed. Nevertheless, running was synergistic with cycling, aerobics, and racquet sports in the associations with CVD risk. Conclusions There were inverse associations of specific types of physical activities with CVD risk. Furthermore, there might be synergistic and antagonistic associations of multiple types of physical activities with CVD risk.
