Abstract
DNA methylation and the alternative splicing of precursor messenger RNAs (pre-mRNAs) are two important genetic modification mechanisms. However, both are currently uncharacterized in the muscle metabolism of rabbits. Thus, we constructed the Tianfu black rabbit obesity model (obese rabbits fed with a 10% high-fat diet and control rabbits from 35 days to 70 days) and collected the skeletal muscle samples from the two groups for Genome methylation sequencing and RNA sequencing. DNA methylation data showed that the promoter regions of 599 genes and gene body region of 2522 genes had significantly differential methylation rates between the two groups, of which 288 genes had differential methylation rates in promoter and gene body regions. Analysis of alternative splicing showed 555 genes involved in exon skipping (ES) patterns, and 15 genes existed in differential methylation regions. Network analysis showed that 20 hub genes were associated with ubiquitinated protein degradation, muscle development pathways, and skeletal muscle energy metabolism. Our findings suggest that the two types of genetic modification have potential regulatory effects on skeletal muscle development and provide a basis for further mechanistic studies in the rabbit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Statins are one of the most prescribed classes of drugs worldwide. Atorvastatin, the most prescribed statin, is currently used to treat conditions such as hypercholesterolaemia and dyslipidaemia. By reducing the level of cholesterol, which is the precursor of the steroidogenesis pathway, atorvastatin may cause a reduction in levels of testosterone and other androgens. Testosterone and other androgens play important roles in biological functions. A potential reduction in androgen levels, caused by atorvastatin might cause negative effects in most settings. In contrast, in the setting of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), reducing excessive levels of androgens with atorvastatin could be beneficial. OBJECTIVES Primary objective To quantify the magnitude of the effect of atorvastatin on total testosterone in both males and females, compared to placebo or no treatment. Secondary objectives To quantify the magnitude of the effects of atorvastatin on free testosterone, sex hormone binding globin (SHBG), androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) concentrations, free androgen index (FAI), and withdrawal due to adverse effects (WDAEs) in both males and females, compared to placebo or no treatment. SEARCH METHODS The Cochrane Hypertension Information Specialist searched the following databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) up to 9 November 2020: the Cochrane Hypertension Specialised Register; the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL); MEDLINE; Embase; ;two international trials registries, and the websites of the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Patent Office and the Pfizer pharmaceutical corporation. These searches had no language restrictions. We also contacted authors of relevant articles regarding further published and unpublished work. SELECTION CRITERIA RCTs of daily atorvastatin for at least three weeks, compared with placebo or no treatment, and assessing change in testosterone levels in males or females. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently screened the citations, extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. We used the mean difference (MD) with associated 95% confidence intervals (CI) to report the effect size of continuous outcomes,and the risk ratio (RR) to report effect sizes of the sole dichotomous outcome (WDAEs). We used a fixed-effect meta-analytic model to combine effect estimates across studies, and risk ratio to report effect size of the dichotomous outcomes. We used GRADE to assess the certainty of the evidence. MAIN RESULTS We included six RCTs involving 265 participants who completed the study and their data was reported. Participants in two of the studies were male with normal lipid profile or mild dyslipidaemia (N = 140); the mean age of participants was 68 years. Participants in four of the studies were female with PCOS (N = 125); the mean age of participants was 32 years. We found no significant difference in testosterone levels in males between atorvastatin and placebo, MD -0.20 nmol/L (95% CI -0.77 to 0.37). In females, atorvastatin may reduce total testosterone by -0.27 nmol/L (95% CI -0.50 to -0.04), FAI by -2.59 nmol/L (95% CI -3.62 to -1.57), androstenedione by -1.37 nmol/L (95% CI -2.26 to -0.49), and DHEAS by -0.63 μmol/l (95% CI -1.12 to -0.15). Furthermore, compared to placebo, atorvastatin increased SHBG concentrations in females by 3.11 nmol/L (95% CI 0.23 to 5.99). We identified no studies in healthy females (i.e. females with normal testosterone levels) or children (under age 18). Importantly, no study reported on free testosterone levels. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We found no significant difference between atorvastatin and placebo on the levels of total testosterone in males. In females with PCOS, atorvastatin lowered the total testosterone, FAI, androstenedione, and DHEAS. The certainty of evidence ranged from low to very low for both comparisons. More RCTs studying the effect of atorvastatin on testosterone are needed.

Abstract
Elevated plasma homocysteine concentration is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which seems to be the main cause of increased mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Previous studies have demonstrated the effect of exercise on homocysteine levels and the magnitude of these benefits seems to depend on the type, mode and frequency of training. The present study aimed to compare the effects of aerobic and resistance training on plasma homocysteine in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The study included 15 individuals undergoing aerobic training, 14 subjects undergoing resistance training, and 18 individuals in the control group. Homocysteine, total cholesterol and fractions, glucose, and anthropometric measurements were conducted. The training program lasted 16 weeks. Aerobic training was performed twice a week and lasted 75 min, and resistance training was performed twice a week and lasted 75 min. Homocysteine levels were not significantly different between before and after training. High-density lipoprotein levels increased in both training groups and decreased in the control group. Glucose levels decreased after aerobic and resistance training. Body fat mass (percentage and total) decreased in both training group, but with more expression in the aerobic group. We conclude that 16-week aerobic and resistance training programs did not significantly affect plasma homocysteine levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, these training programs yielded positive results in HDL control, plasma glucose, and body composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No earlier study summarized findings on the effect of statins on inflammatory biomarkers in apparently healthy individuals or those with chronic diseases. This study was done to systematically review earlier publications on the effect of statins on serum concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in apparently healthy individuals or those with chronic diseases. METHODS We searched relevant publications published up to December 2018 in PubMed, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases. For this purpose, suitable MESH and non-MESH keywords were used. Randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials that examined the effect of statins on serum concentrations of CRP and IL-6 in apparently healthy adults or those with chronic diseases were included. RESULTS Overall, 18 studies with 23 effect sizes, that enrolled 32,156 individuals (38% female and 62% male; mean age: 44.79 years) were included. When we combined 21 effect sizes from 16 studies, we observed a significant reduction in circulating levels of CRP following administration of statins [Weighted Mean Difference (WMD): -0.80; 95% CI: -1.05, -0.56]. Combining 12 effect sizes from 11 studies, a significant reduction was found in serum CRP concentrations following administration of Atorvastatin (WMD: -0.57; 95% CI: -0.78, -0.35). Pooling 5 effect sizes from 2 studies, we found a significant reduction in serum concentrations of CRP following administration of Simvastatin (WMD: -0.29; 95% CI: -0.49, -0.10; I2 = 88.5%). Combining 6 effect sizes from 5 studies, we found a significant reduction in serum IL-6 concentrations after Atorvastatin therapy (WMD: -2.13; 95% CI: -3.96, -0.30; I2 = 98.6%). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, we found that statins administration in apparently healthy people or those with chronic diseases help reducing serum CRP concentrations. In addition, Atorvastatin administration resulted in reduced serum IL-6 concentrations in these people.

Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic non-communicable disease affecting over 400 million people worldwide. Diabetic patients are at a high risk of various complications, such as cardiovascular, renal, and other diseases. The pathogenesis of diabetes (both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) is associated with a functional impairment of pancreatic β-cells. Consequently, most efforts to manage and prevent diabetes have focused on preserving β-cells and their function. Advances in imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, positron emission tomography, and single-photon-emission computed tomography, have enabled noninvasive and quantitative detection and characterization of the population and function of β-cells in vivo. These advantages aid in defining and monitoring the progress of diabetes and determining the efficacy of anti-diabetic therapies. Beyond β-cell targeting, molecular imaging of biomarkers associated with the development of diabetes, e.g., lymphocyte infiltration, insulitis, and metabolic changes, may also be a promising strategy for early detection of diabetes, monitoring its progression, and occurrence of complications, as well as facilitating exploration of new therapeutic interventions. Moreover, molecular imaging of glucose uptake, production and excretion in specified tissues is critical for understanding the pathogenesis of diabetes. In the current review, we summarize and discuss recent advances in noninvasive imaging technologies for imaging of biomarkers beyond β-cells for early diagnosis of diabetes, investigation of glucose metabolism, and precise diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic complications for better management of diabetic patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endothelial dysfunction could contribute to the pathophysiology of angina pectoris (AP) in patients with normal coronary angiograms. Besides lipid-lowering effects, statins exert pleiotropic effects including improving endothelial function. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our double-blind study included 58 patients with AP, noninvasively confirmed myocardial ischemia and a normal coronary angiogram. The effect of once-daily 20 mg atorvastatin (A) was compared with placebo (P) for 6 months. Endothelial function was evaluated by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery, and microcirculation by peripheral arterial tonometry (EndoPAT) measuring the reactive hyperemia index (RHI), indicating microcirculatory endothelial function, and the augmentation index (AI), an indicator of arterial stiffness. The impact of AP on the quality of life was monitored using the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ). RESULTS Brachial artery endothelial dysfunction was found in 91.4% of patients at study entry, and subnormal RHI in 41%. Group A showed an improvement of FMD compared with group P, both at 3 and 6 months (+120.8% vs. -21.2%, and +70.8% vs. -1.9%, respectively, p < 0.001). No difference was detected in the RHI. Rate-normalized AI showed an improvement (-114.49% group A vs. -30.77% group P, p = 0.077), although the differences between the groups were not significant. According to the SAQ, an improvement was found in almost all observed variables with the exception of the issue of quality of life (QoL), where patients in both groups assessed their QoL at the control study visits as poorer compared with baseline. CONCLUSIONS Moderate-dose atorvastatin therapy improves endothelial function of large conduit arteries in patients with AP and a normal coronary angiogram, which probably reflects positive effects on coronary artery endothelial function. No effect was found with vascular effects at the level of the peripheral microcirculation.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS The effect of n-3 fatty acid treatment on vibration perception thresholds (VPTs) and cutaneous microvascular reactivity is not known. We tested whether: (1) a 15-18 month treatment with high dose (4 g/day) docosahexaenoic (DHA) plus eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acid improved VPT and microvascular reactivity in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease; and (2) there are associations between VPT, microvascular reactivity and metabolic variables. METHODS In the completed single centre, randomised, parallel group, placebo controlled Wessex Evaluation of fatty Liver and Cardiovascular markers in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with OMacor thErapy (WELCOME) trial, we tested the effect of DHA+EPA on VPT at 125 Hz (big toe) and the cutaneous hyperaemic response (forearm) to arterial occlusion (ratio of maximum to resting blood flux [MF/RF]). Allocation and dispensing was carried out by an independent research pharmacist; all participants and research team members were blinded to group assignment. RESULTS In all, 51 and 49 patients were randomised to placebo and DHA+EPA, respectively (mean age 51.4 years). Of these, 32 had type 2 diabetes. Forty-six (placebo) and 47 (DHA+EPA) patients completed the study; there were no important adverse (or unexpected) effects or side effects. In multivariable-adjusted regression models (intention-to-treat analyses), DHA+EPA treatment was associated with an increase in VPT (β coefficient 1.49 [95% CI 0.04, 2.94], p = 0.04). For VPT, the adjusted mean differences (95% CIs) in the placebo and DHA+EPA treatment groups were -0.725 (-1.71, 0.25) and 0.767 (-0.21, 1.75) m/s(2), respectively. With DHA+EPA treatment, there was no change in MF/RF (β coefficient 0.07 [95% CI -0.56, 0.70], p = 0.84), the adjusted mean differences (95% CIs) in the placebo and DHA+EPA treatment groups were -0.549 (-1.03, -0.07) and -0.295 (-0.77, 0.18) respectively. VPT was independently associated with age (β coefficient 0.019 [95% CI 0.010, 0.029], p < 0.0001) and MF/RF (β coefficient -0.074 [95% CI -0.132, -0.016], p = 0.013), but not with diabetes (p = 0.38). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION High dose n-3 fatty acid treatment did not improve measures of microvascular function or vibration perception. Ageing and microvascular reactivity are associated with a measure of peripheral nerve function. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00760513. Abstract
There is compelling evidence that microvascular deficits affecting multiple tissues and organs play an important role in the aetiopathogenesis of cardio-metabolic disease. Furthermore, both in humans and animal models, deficits in small vessel structure and function can be detected early, often before the onset of macrovascular disease and the development of end-organ damage that is common to hypertension and obesity-associated clinical disorders. This article considers the growing evidence for the negative impact of an adverse maternal diet on the long-term health of her child, and how this can result in a disadvantageous vascular phenotype that extends to the microvascular bed. We describe how structural and functional modifications in the offspring microcirculation during development may represent an important and additional risk determinant to increase susceptibility to the development of cardio-metabolic disease in adult life and consider the cell-signalling pathways associated with endothelial dysfunction that may be 'primed' by the maternal environment. Published studies were identified that reported outcomes related to the microcirculation, endothelium, maternal diet and vascular programming using NCBI PubMed.gov, MEDLINE and ISI Web of Science databases from 1980 until April 2013 using pre-specified search terms. Information extracted from over 230 original reports and review articles was critically evaluated by the authors for inclusion in this review.

Abstract
New Findings • What is the central question of this study? Autonomic nervous dysfunction is implicated in complications of sickle cell anaemia (SCA). In healthy adults, a deep inspiratory breath hold (IBH) elicits rapid transient SNS- mediated vasoconstriction detectable using Laser Doppler Flux (LDF) assessment of the finger-tip cutaneous micovasculature. • What is the main finding and its importance? We demonstrate significantly increased resting peripheral blood flow and sympathetic activity in African children with SCA compared to sibling controls and increased sympathetic stimulation in response to vasoprovocation with DIG. This study is the first to observe an inverse association between resting peripheral blood flow and haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2). These phenomena may be an adaptive response to the hypoxic exposure in SCA. There is increasing evidence that autonomic dysfunction in adults with homozygous sickle cell (haemoglobin SS) disease is associated with enhanced autonomic nervous system-mediated control of microvascular perfusion. However, it is unclear whether such differences are detectable in children with SS disease. We studied 65 children with SS disease [38 boys; median age 7.2 (interquartile range 5.1–10.6) years] and 20 control children without symptoms of SS disease [8 boys; 8.7 (5.5–10.8) years] and recorded mean arterial blood pressure (ABP) and daytime haemoglobin oxygen saturation (). Cutaneous blood flux at rest (RBF) and during the sympathetically activated vasoconstrictor response to inspiratory breath hold (IBH) were measured in the finger pulp of the non-dominant hand using laser Doppler fluximetry. Local factors mediating flow motion were assessed by power spectral density analysis of the oscillatory components of the laser Doppler signal. The RBF measured across the two study groups was negatively associated with age (r=−0.25, P < 0.0001), ABP (r=−0.27, P= 0.02) and daytime (r=−0.30, P= 0.005). Children with SS disease had a higher RBF (P= 0.005) and enhanced vasoconstrictor response to IBH (P= 0.002) compared with control children. In children with SS disease, higher RBF was associated with an increase in the sympathetic interval (r=−0.28, P= 0.022). The SS disease status, daytime and age explained 22% of the variance in vasoconstrictor response to IBH (P < 0.0001). Our findings suggest that blood flow and blood flow responses in the skin of young African children with SS disease differ from those of healthy control children, with increased resting peripheral blood flow and increased sympathetic stimulation from a young age in SS disease. They further suggest that the laser Doppler flowmetry technique with inspiratory breath hold manoeuvre appears to be robust for use in young children with SS disease, to explore interactions between , ABP and autonomic function with clinical complications, e.g. skin ulceration.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE Changes in vasomotion may precede other global indices of autonomic dysfunction that track the onset and progression of diabetes. Recently, we showed that baseline spectral properties of vasomotion can discriminate among N, PreDM, and T2DM nonhuman primates. In this study, our aims were to: (i) determine the time dependence and complexity of the spectral properties of vasomotion in three metabolic groups of monkeys; (ii) examine the effects of heat-provoked vasodilatation on the power spectrum; and (iii) compare the effects of exogenous insulin on the vasomotion. MATERIALS AND METHODS Laser Doppler flow rates were measured from the foot in 9 N, 11 PreDM, and 7 T2DM monkeys. Baseline flow was measured at 34°C, and under heat stimulation at 44°C. Euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamps were performed to produce acute hyperinsulinemia. The Lempel-Ziv complexity, prediction error, and covariance complexity of five-dimensional embeddings were calculated as measures of randomness. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS With progression of diabetes, measures of randomness of the vasomotion progressively decreased, suggesting a progressive loss of the homeostatic capacity of the peripheral circulation to respond to environmental changes. Power spectral density among T2DM animals resided mostly in the 0- to 1.45-Hz range, which excluded the cardiac component, suggesting that with progression of the disease, regulation of flow shifts toward local rather than central (autonomic) mechanisms. Heating increased all components of the spectral power in all groups. In N, insulin increased the vasomotion contributed by endothelial, neurogenic, vascular myogenic, and respiratory processes, but diminished that due to heart rate. In contrast, in T2DM, insulin failed to stimulate the vascular myogenic and respiratory activities, but increased the neural/endothelial and heart rate components. Interestingly, acute hyperinsulinemia resulted in no significant vasomotion changes in the chronically hyperinsulinemic PreDM, suggesting yet another form of "insulin resistance" during this stage of the disease.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a complex multifactorial condition that can by treated with multimodal approaches. No pharmacologic agent to prevent or treat sarcopenia has been as efficacious as exercise (mainly resistance training) in combination with nutritional intervention (adequate protein and energy intake). However, performing resistance training sessions and following nutritional advice can be challenging, especially for frail, sarcopenic, elderly patients, and results remain only partial. Therefore, new pharmacologic agents may substantially reduce the functional decline in older people. This article reviews the new pharmacologic agents currently being assessed for treating sarcopenia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that: (i) functional microvascular dilator capacity is independently associated with insulin sensitivity and age in individuals with central adiposity at risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD); and (ii) functional microvascular dilator capacity is improved by high dose statin treatment. METHODS Functional dilator capacity (measured as change in laser Doppler blood flux from baseline during post occlusive reactive hyperemia [peak flux%resting flux; PF%RF] and flowmotion (power spectral density [PSD] analysis)) were assessed in 40 people with central adiposity and one or more other CVD risk factors. Measurements were made at rest and during acute hyperinsulinaemia before and six months after high dose atorvastatin (40 mg daily) or placebo. RESULTS Insulin-induced change in PF%RF was independently associated with insulin sensitivity (M/I) (r = 0.46 p = 0.02) and age (r = -0.46 p = 0.02), which together explained almost half of the variance in PF%RF (adjusted r² = 0.37, p = 0.008). Whilst atorvastatin decreased LDL cholesterol by 51% (p < 0.001), PF%RF and flowmotion remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS Insulin sensitivity and age are independently associated with an insulin-induced change in functional microvascular dilator capacity in individuals with central adiposity at risk of CVD. Dilator capacity is not improved by six months high dose statin treatment.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Microvascular dysfunction is associated with end-organ damage. Macular oedema is an important component of diabetic retinopathy. Macular thickness can be accurately quantified by optical coherence tomography (OCT), enabling accurate assessment of the macular prior to clinically apparent abnormalities. We investigated whether macular (fovea) thickness in non-diabetic individuals is related to the microvascular variables controlling fluid filtration across a blood vessel wall, in particular capillary pressure and the microvascular filtration capacity (Kf). METHODS We recruited 50 non-diabetic individuals (25 men, 25 women; age range: 26-78 years; BMI range: 20-46 kg/m(2)). Fovea thickness was assessed by OCT. Microvascular assessments included: finger nailfold capillary pressure; Kf; microvascular structural assessments, i.e. skin vasodilatory capacity, minimum vascular resistance (MVR) and microvascular distensibility; and endothelial function. RESULTS At 214.6 (19.9) microm (mean [SD]), fovea thickness was within normal range. Capillary pressure, adjusted for BMI, was associated with fovea thickness (standardised beta 0.573, p = 0.006, linear regression). Fovea thickness was not associated with Kf, microvascular structural assessments or endothelial function. Capillary pressure was still associated with fovea thickness when adjusted for microvascular variables (Kf, vasodilatory capacity, MVR, microvascular distensibility or endothelial function), or for risk factors for diabetes (systemic blood pressure, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, glycaemic status and lipids) and age. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Capillary pressure, a key determinant of movement of fluid across a blood vessel wall, is associated with fovea thickness in non-diabetic individuals. This suggests that with regard to potential preventative or therapeutic targets, attention should be directed at the mechanisms determining retinal microvascular pressure.

Abstract
Cardiorespiratory fitness [maximal O2 consumption (V̇o2max)] is an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes; but in individuals at risk, factors influencing V̇o2max are poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that V̇o2max is associated with diastolic function [subendocardial variability ratio (SEVR), %], as diastolic function influences myocardial perfusion. We studied 47 men and women with central obesity without diabetes. We measured fitness (V̇o2max) by treadmill testing and diastolic function (SEVR%) by pulse-wave analysis. We measured other factors influencing this relationship: insulin sensitivity [whole body glucose uptake-to-insulin concentration ratio (M/I)] by hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp, fatness by MR imaging and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, physical activity energy expenditure (metabolic equivalents of tasks) by the Sensewear Pro2 device, and muscle microvascular exchange capacity (capillary filtration coefficient) by venous plethysmography. Mean age of the subjects was 51 ± 9 (SD) yr. V̇o2max was associated with SEVR% ( r = 0.50, P = 0.001), fatness ( r = −0.39, P = 0.008), and HbA1c ( r = −0.35, P = 0.018), but not with whole body glucose uptake-to-insulin concentration ratio, metabolic equivalents of tasks, or capillary filtration coefficient. In regression modeling with age, sex, fatness, and SEVR% as explanatory variables, only age, sex, and SEVR% were independently associated with V̇o2max (SEVR% − standardized B coefficient = 0.37, 95% confidence interval = 0.003–0.18, P = 0.007). This model identified 46% of the variance in V̇o2max ( R2 = 0.46, P = 0.0001). There was a strong, independent association between V̇o2max and a measure of diastolic function in sedentary individuals with central obesity.

Abstract
AIMS Poor glycaemic control is associated with increased risk of microvascular disease in various organs including the eye and kidney, but the relationship between glycated haemoglobin (HbA(1c)) and microvascular function in skeletal muscle has not been described. We tested the association between HbA(1c) and a measure of microvascular exchange capacity (K(f)) in skeletal muscle in people with central obesity at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. METHODS Microvascular function was measured in 28 women and 19 men [mean (+/- sd) age 51 +/- 9 years] with central obesity who did not have diabetes. We estimated insulin sensitivity by hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp, visceral and total fatness by magnetic resonance imaging, fitness (VO(2) max by treadmill testing), physical activity energy expenditure [metabolic equivalents of tasks (METS) by use of the SenseWear Pro armband] and skeletal muscle microvascular exchange capacity (K(f)) by venous occlusion plethysmography. RESULTS In regression modelling, age, sex and fasting plasma glucose accounted for 30.5% of the variance in HbA(1c) (r(2) = 0.31, P = 0.001). Adding K(f) to this model explained an additional 26.5% of the variance in HbA(1c) (r(2) = 0.57, P = 0.0001 and K(f) was strongly and independently associated with HbA(1c) (standardized B coefficient -0.45 (95% confidence interval -0.19, -0.06), P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS We found a strong negative independent association between a measure of skeletal muscle microvascular exchange capacity (K(f)) and HbA(1c). K(f) was associated with almost as much of the variance in HbA(1c) as fasting plasma glucose.
