Abstract
The inflammatory status of the kidneys, vasculature, and perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) has a significant influence on blood pressure and hypertension. Numerous micronutrients play an influential role in hypertension-driving inflammatory processes, and recent reports have provided bases for potential targeted modulation of these micronutrients to reduce hypertension. Iron overload in adipose tissue macrophages and adipocytes engenders an inflammatory environment and may contribute to impaired anticontractile signalling, and thus a treatment such as chelation therapy may hold a key to reducing blood pressure. Similarly, magnesium intake has proven to greatly influence inflammatory signalling and concurrent hypertension in both healthy animals and in a model for chronic kidney disease, demonstrating its potential clinical utility. These findings highlight the importance of further research to determine the efficacy of micronutrient-targeted treatments for the amelioration of hypertension and their potential translation into clinical application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Reduced serum magnesium (Mg) levels have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance (IR), type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in adults. However, in the children population, the evidence is still limited. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to analyze the association of serum Mg levels with the frequency of overweight and obesity and cardiometabolic traits in 189 schoolchildren (91 girls and 98 boys) between 6 and 12 years old from Mexico City. SUBJECTS/METHODS Anthropometrical data were collected and biochemical parameters were measured by enzymatic colorimetric assay. Serum Mg level was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was used as a surrogate marker to evaluate IR. RESULTS Serum Mg level was negatively associated with overweight (Odds ratio [OR] = 0.377, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.231-0.614, p < 0.001) and obesity (OR = 0.345, 95% CI 0.202-0.589, p < 0.001). Serum Mg level resulted negatively associated with body mass index (BMI, β = -1.16 ± 0.26, p < 0.001), BMI z-score (β = -0.48 ± 0.10, p < 0.001) and TyG index (β = -0.04 ± 0.04, p = 0.041). Through a mediation analysis was estimated that BMI z-score accounts for 60.5% of the negative association of serum Mg level with IR (Sobel test: z = 2.761; p = 0.005). CONCLUSION Our results evidence that BMI z-score mediate part of the negative association of serum Mg level and IR in Mexican schoolchildren.

Abstract
Background Childhood obesity has become a global epidemic, with projections indicating it could affect 25% of children under 16 by 2050. This rise poses significant health risks, including early onset of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Recent research has shown a correlation between insulin action and magnesium levels, highlighting the link between low serum magnesium levels and obesity. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum magnesium levels and obesity in children aged 5-16 years, to compare overweight and obese adolescents with age- and gender-matched controls, and to determine the association between insulin resistance and decreased serum magnesium levels. Methodology At a tertiary hospital, this 1.5-year cross-sectional comparative study investigated the relationship between magnesium levels in the blood and insulin resistance in children aged 5-16. Cases met the 2015 revised Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) growth charts for overweight or obesity in comparison to age-matched healthy controls. Exclusions included secondary causes of obesity and medical complications affecting magnesium. Assessments involved clinical history, examination, and fasting blood tests for insulin resistance indices. Results Compared to the controls, overweight children showed that mean serum magnesium levels are lower (1.03 mEq/l vs. 1.85 mEq/l, p<0.001); they were also reflected in higher anthropometric measures, which include body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage. Cases had significantly higher metabolic markers like fasting insulin, Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) index, and lipid profiles, whereas systolic blood pressure although showing recognized differences did not significantly differ. Conclusion The study underscored the importance of detecting magnesium levels on insulin resistance in overweight and obese children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is common after solid organ transplantation. In the past decade, there has been increasing interest in the association between hypomagnesaemia and the development of PTDM. This systematic review aimed to investigate the current knowledge regarding the association between hypomagnesaemia and PTDM in adult liver and renal transplant recipients. METHODS A literature search of five databases, Medline, Embase, ProQuest, Scopus and Google Scholar, as well as article reference lists, was performed. Eligible studies that focused on adult liver and renal transplant recipients without pretransplantation hyperglycaemia or diabetes were included. Other eligibility criteria included quantitative studies which reported magnesium concentrations, studies with at least 6 months of follow-up, and studies published in English. The Newcastle-Ottawa Assessment Tool was used for the quality assessment. RESULTS In total, 12 studies were included in the final analysis. Eleven focused on renal transplantation and one on liver transplantation. All studies were medium to high quality with eight out of 12 achieving the highest rating of nine. Eight studies found a negative association between either pretransplant or early post-transplant serum magnesium concentration and the risk of PTDM, three studies found no association between these two variables, and one study found a positive association between the magnesium concentration at 8 weeks after transplantation and glycosylated haemoglobin A1C. CONCLUSIONS Further large-scale prospective studies with at least 6 months of follow-up are needed to confirm these findings, particularly in liver transplantation, to further clarify and explore the relationship between hypomagnesaemia and PTDM.

Abstract
Chronic non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Developing and implementing effective preventive strategies is the best way to ensure the overall metabolic health status of the population and to counter the global burden of non-communicable diseases. Predisposition to obesity and other non-communicable diseases is due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors throughout life, but the early environment, particularly the environment during the fetal period and the early years of life, is crucial in determining metabolic health, hence the concept of 'fetal programming'. The origins of this causal link between environmental factors and disease lie in epigenetic mechanisms. Among the environmental factors, diet plays a crucial role in this process. Substantial evidence documented the key role of macronutrients in the programming of metabolic diseases early in life. Recently, the effect of maternal micronutrient intake on offspring metabolic health in later life emerged. The purpose of this narrative review is to bring to light available evidence in the literature on the effect of maternal micronutrient status on offspring metabolic health and underlying epigenetic mechanisms that drive this link to highlight its potential role in the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

Abstract
Introduction One of the world's most pressing problems right now is childhood obesity. After potassium, magnesium (Mg) is the second most prevalent intracellular cation and the fourth most prevalent mineral in the human body. Numerous symptoms of magnesium insufficiency can include hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, as well as cardiac and neurological symptoms. Additionally, chronically low Mg levels have been associated with a number of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and osteoporosis. Objectives This study aimed to compare the magnesium (Mg) level between normal-weight and obese children in a tertiary center in Saudi Arabia over the past seven years and evaluate the vitamin D and phosphorus between the two groups as a secondary objective. Methods This is a single-center, case-control study conducted on patients followed up in our center from January 2016 to December 2022. All pediatric patients were between two and 14 years of age. They were divided into two groups: one with children whose body mass index (BMI) was over the 85th percentile and the other with children whose BMI was between the 3rd and 85th percentiles. Results Mean serum Mg levels showed no significant correlation between the obese group (0.82 mg/dl) and the normal-weight group (0.83 mg/dl). However, vitamin D and phosphorus demonstrate a significant difference between the two groups. The obese group revealed a vitamin D of 1.6±0.24 and phosphorus of 4.2±0.46. On the other hand, the normal group had a vitamin D of 44.0±28.2 and phosphorus of 1.5±0.26. Conclusion There was a negative correlation between Mg levels and weight in pediatric patients. However, a positive relationship was observed between the Mg intake and Mg levels. Moreover, sodium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels showed significant differences.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was the development of gluten-free cracker-type snacks with a balanced supply of essential amino acids, a lower glycemic index, and a lower caloric intake that were sensorially acceptable. For this purpose, chickpea flour was replaced by quinoa (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%) and the fat was partially (75%) replaced by chicory inulin. The flours were characterized in terms of their proximate composition, individual mineral content, particle size distribution, and functional properties. The parameters analyzed for the crackers, once baked, were the water content, water activity, weight, dimensions, color, and texture. A sensory analysis was performed as well, using the formulations containing 50% chickpea flour and 50% quinoa flour (g/100 g flour), with and without inulin, as well as those made with 100% chickpea flour. From the analysis of the raw flours, it can be concluded that snack products developed from them could be a nutritive option for children, in terms of the protein, magnesium, and fiber content. The functional properties revealed that both flours are suitable for producing doughs and baked products. The obtained results indicate that snacks made with 50% quinoa flour (g/100 g flour) and 75% chicory inulin (g/100 g high oleic sunflower oil) could be an interesting alternative for children as, in addition to offering a very interesting nutritional contribution, the energy intake from fat is reduced by 57%.

Abstract
Obesity enhances the risk of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory conditions and often leads to metal dyshomeostasis, which contributes to the negative health aspects associated with the disease. In severe cases, bariatric surgery can be recommended to achieve sustained weight loss and improvement in health. Here, magnesium, zinc, copper and selenium concentrations were examined in 24 obese patients (7 males; 17 females) before and 9 months after undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. All patients lost weight over this period, with the mean BMI reducing from 51.2±7.1 kg/m2 to 37.2±5.5 kg/m2. Moreover, whole-blood glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), as a marker of average glycaemia, was also measured and a correlative analysis of this parameter with metal concentrations performed. Significant alterations in the plasma concentrations of magnesium, zinc (both increased by 13.2% and 25.2% respectively) and copper (decreased by 7.9%) were observed over this period (plasma selenium concentration was unchanged), with BMI values correlating with plasma magnesium (p = 0.004) and zinc (p = 0.022) concentrations. At 9 months post-surgery, an increase in mean zinc/copper ratio was observed (0.86±0.29 compared to 0.63±0.14 pre-surgery). Comparison of whole-blood HbA1c concentrations pre- and post-surgery revealed a reduction from 6.50±1.28% pre-surgery to 5.51±0.49% post-surgery. Differences in plasma HbA1c and magnesium at either pre- and post-surgery correlated significantly, as did HbA1c and magnesium levels when pre- and post-surgery values were analysed together. Collectively, this work reveals that bariatric surgery, in conjunction with lifestyle/dietary changes, lead to improvements in the nutritional status of magnesium, zinc and copper. Furthermore, the observed improvements in magnesium and zinc were associated with weight loss and in the case of magnesium, to better glycaemic control.

Abstract
PURPOSE Magnesium is vital to maintain normal physiological functions. We aimed to identify the association between serum magnesium and different measures of body adiposity among Qatari adults. We hypothesized that the association was mediated by depression and sleep duration. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 1000 adults aged 20 years and above who attended the Qatar Biobank Study (QBB) between 2012 and 2019. Body adiposity was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Serum magnesium concentration was measured. Sub-optimal magnesium was defined as magnesium concentration less than 0.85 mmol/L. The association was examined using linear regression. RESULTS The mean age of the participants (n=1000) was 35.8 (SD 10.3) years. More than half of the participants had sub-optimal magnesium concentrations (60.2% in men and 52.3% in women). Serum magnesium was inversely associated with different types of fat mass. In the fully adjusted model, per 1 SD increment of serum magnesium had standardized regression coefficients of -0.09 (p 0.005) for total fat mass, -0.08 (p 0.008) for trunk fat, -0.09 (p 0.003) for gynoid fat and -0.08 (p 0.008) for android fat. There was no gender difference in the association. The inverse association between serum magnesium and fat mass was significant in those with sleep duration ≥7 hours but not in those <7 hours. Depressive symptom and sleep did not mediate the association between serum magnesium and fat mass. Serum magnesium was inversely associated with metabolic syndrome (per 1 SD increment had an odds ratio (OR) of 0.70 (95% CI 0.57-0.85)). CONCLUSION There was an inverse association between serum magnesium and fat mass, especially among those with an adequate sleep duration and without chronic conditions including diabetes, hypertension and depression.

Abstract
Conflicting evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of magnesium supplementation during pregnancy in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients. This meta-analysis examines the effect of magnesium on glycemic indices and metabolic status in GDM. We searched databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted, and after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of four RCTs were considered eligible for the analysis. Outcome parameters included markers for glycemic control and metabolic status. A total of four RCTs with 198 participants (control = 99; magnesium supplemented = 99) were selected for the analysis. Magnesium supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in markers of glycemic control-fasting plasma glucose (standard mean difference ( μ ^ ) = -0.83; 95% CI: [-1.13, -0.54]; p-value <.0001), and insulin levels ( μ ^ = -0.95; 95% CI: [-1.38, -0.52]; p-value <.0001). Also, Mg intake resulted in altered oxidative stress markers TAC ( μ ^ = 1.09; 95% CI: [0.10, 2.07]; p-value = .03) of the pregnant women. No significant effect on GSH and CRP levels was observed. This study provides evidence of the positive effects of magnesium intervention on insulin sensitivity and oxidative stress in GDM patients.

Abstract
Introduction Teff (Eragrostis tef) is an indigenous crop in Ethiopia and exists in white, red, and mixed varieties. Several types of research confirmed that teff is rich in many essential amino acids, slowly digesting carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, fibers, and other components. Since teff has a low glycemic index, is enriched in essential amino acids and fatty acids, and contains nutritionally balanced minerals, vitamins, and their precursors, it could be a promising food for the prevention and management of diabetes. People with diabetes mellitus are recommended to feed on a diet having a low glycemic index and enriched in essential nutrients. Objective This review aimed to summarize the nutritional composition of teff (Eragrostis tef) and its value in diabetic patients. Methodology We searched Web of Science, PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar for studies on the nutritional composition of teff and its value for diabetic patients published in English since 2010. Conclusion According to available data, teff is a nutritionally valuable food type for diabetic patients.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) is an essential divalent cation involved in various enzymatic reactions that regulate vital biological functions. The main goal was to evaluate Mg status and its association with nutritional indicators in 78 children and adolescents with chronic diseases. We assessed anthropometric, biochemical, diet, body composition, and bone densitometry valuations. Serum Mg and Ca levels were determined using the standardized method and diet calcium (Ca) and Mg consumption by a prospective 72 h diet survey. Mean serum Ca (9.9 mg/dL), Mg (2.08 mg/dL) dietary Ca (102% DRI: Dietary Reference Intake), and Mg intake (105% DRI) were normal. A total of 45% had hypomagnesemia, 12% had hypermagnesemia, and 26% and 24% had inadequate and high Mg intake, respectively. Only 6% of patients had poor Mg intake and hypomagnesemia, and 54% and 90% of our series had an elevated serum Ca/Mg ratio > 4.70 (mean 4.79) and a low Ca/Mg intake ratio < 1.70 (mean 1.06), respectively. Both Ca/Mg ratios were linked with the risk of developing other chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, syndrome metabolic, and even several cancers. Therefore, 79% of children and adolescents with chronic diseases were at elevated risk of having abnormal Mg status and developing other chronic illnesses.

Abstract
Implant removal is unnecessary for biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based implants and, therefore, the related risk for implant-induced fractures is limited. Aging, on the other hand, is associated with low bone-turnover and decreased bone mass and density, and thus increased fracture risk. Osteoporosis is accompanied by Mg deficiency, therefore, we hypothesized that Mg-based implants may support bone formation by Mg2+ ion release in an ovariectomy-induced osteoporotic rat model. Hence, we investigated osseointegration and implant degradation of a low-alloyed, degrading Mg-Zn-Ca implant (ZX00) in ovariectomy-induced osteoporotic (Osteo), old healthy (OH), and juvenile healthy (JH) groups of female Sprague Dawley rats via in vivo micro-computed tomography (µCT). For the Osteo rats, we demonstrate diminished trabecular bone already after 8 weeks upon ovariectomy and significantly enhanced implant volume loss, with correspondingly pronounced gas formation, compared to the OH and JH groups. Sclerotic rim development was observed in about half of the osteoporotic rats, suggesting a prevention from foreign-body and osteonecrosis development. Synchrotron radiation-based µCT confirmed lower bone volume fractions in the Osteo group compared to the OH and JH groups. Qualitative histological analysis additionally visualized the enhanced implant degradation in the Osteo group. To date, ZX00 provides an interesting implant material for young and older healthy patients, but it may not be of advantage in pharmacologically untreated osteoporotic conditions. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Magnesium-based implants are promising candidates for treatment of osteoporotic fractures because of their biodegradable, biomechanical, anti-bacterial and bone regenerative properties. Here we investigate magnesium‒zinc‒calcium implant materials in a rat model with ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis (Osteo group) and compare the related osseointegration and implant degradation with the results obtained for old healthy (OH) and juvenile healthy (JH) rats. The work applied an appropriate disease model for osteoporosis and focused in particular on long-term implant degradation for different bone conditions. Enhanced implant degradation and sclerotic rim formation was observed in osteoporotic rats, which illustrates that the setting of different bone models generates significantly modified clinical outcome. It further illustrated that these differences must be taken into account in future biodegradable implant development.

Abstract
Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most commonly recognized endocrinopathies in women. The literature lacks clear data that allow any meaningful conclusions to be drawn about the influence of trace elements in erythrocytes on the biochemical parameters of PCOS. Materials and methods: This study was conducted among 47 women meeting the Rotterdam criteria for the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome. The research groups included women with PCOS with different BMI values (body mass index): obese women with PCOS (PCOS with BMI ≥ 30, mean BMI index 35.4 ± 4.4 kg/m2), nonobese PCOS women (PCOS with BMI < 30, mean BMI index 25.2 ± 2.8 kg/m2), and healthy control group (CG) with a mean BMI of 23.57 ± 0.9 kg/m2. The contents of trace elements in erythrocytes were determined with an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer. Results: The only trace element showing significant differences in concentration between the studied groups was nickel (Ni). The level of nickel in the obese women with PCOS (BMI ≥ 30) was significantly higher than in nonobese women (BMI < 30). The content of other trace elements in erythrocytes did not differ significantly between the studied groups. Several significant correlations were found within each of the studied PCOS groups: in the group of obese women, the content of zinc (Zn) in erythrocytes positively correlated with prolactin, the content of magnesium (Mg) positively correlated with testosterone, and the content of manganese (Mn) negatively correlated with thyroid-stimulating hormone. In the group of nonobese women, Zn content correlated positively with testosterone, Ni with luteinizing hormone (LH) and estradiol, and Mg negatively correlated with estradiol. Conclusions: The relationship between the level of trace elements and the level of hormones suggests that, in obese women with PCOS, nickel may play a role in inhibiting the processes of folliculogenesis and ovulation. Research on trace elements and their relationship to ovulatory cycles and the development of PCOS may contribute to reducing the consequences of PCOS and, therefore, should be extended.

Abstract
Low magnesium intake has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in several studies conducted in high-income countries. However, very few studies have been performed in Africa, where many countries have a growing rate of T2DM. We conducted a pilot cross-sectional study among 63 women in Ghana to investigate the association between magnesium intake and glycemic markers. We assessed dietary magnesium using a food frequency questionnaire and glycemic markers using fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Our findings showed that the mean magnesium intake was 200 ± 116 mg/day. The prevalence of T2DM was 5% by measuring fasting blood glucose and 8% by measuring HbA1c. Unadjusted linear regression models revealed that higher magnesium intake significantly predicted higher fasting blood glucose levels (β = 0.31; 95% CI: 0.07, 0.55; p = 0.01) and HbA1c levels (β = 0.26; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.51; p = 0.04). In adjusted analyses, magnesium intake was no longer significantly associated with either fasting blood glucose levels (β = 0.22; 95% CI: −0.03, 0.46; p = 0.08) or HbA1c levels (β = 0.15; 95% CI: −0.08, 0.39; p = 0.20). In conclusion, our study did not show a significant association between magnesium intake and glycemic markers in women of reproductive age in Ghana. The results of this study need to be further substantiated because this was the first study to examine magnesium intake and glycemic markers in this population in Africa.

Abstract
The obesity epidemic, mainly due to lifestyle changes in recent decades, leads to serious comorbidities that reduce life expectancy. This situation is affecting the health policies of many nations around the world. Traditional measures such as diet, physical activity, and drugs are often not enough to achieve weight loss goals and to maintain the results over time. Bariatric surgery (BS) includes various techniques, which favor rapid and sustained weight loss. BS is a useful and, in most cases, the best treatment in severe and complicated obesity. In addition, it has a greater benefit/risk ratio than non-surgical traditional therapies. BS can allow the obese patient to lose weight quickly compared with traditional lifestyle changes, and with a greater probability of maintaining the results. Moreover, BS promotes improvements in metabolic parameters, even diabetes remission, and in the quality of life. These changes can lead to an increase of life expectancy by over 6 years on average. The nutrition of people before and after BS must be the subject of indications from a trained staff, and patients must be followed in the subsequent years to reduce the risk of malnutrition and the associated problems. In particular, it is still debated whether it is necessary to lose weight prior to surgery, a procedure that can facilitate the surgeon's work reducing the surgical risk, but at the same time, lengthens preparation times increasing the risks associated with concomitant pathologies. Furthermore, preventing nutritional deficiencies prior to the intervention can improve the results and reduce short- and long-term mortality.

Abstract
Metformin and glibenclamide may have beneficial effects on the levels of trace elements in diabetic patients. The aim of the current study was to assess the effects of metformin and glibenclamide on the concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The metformin-treated patients showed significantly lower serum Cu levels compared with the untreated and glibenclamide groups. In addition, treatment with metformin was associated with a significant increase in serum concentrations of Zn compared to the newly diagnosed patients, whereas it did not show a noticeable alteration in the serum level of Mg. In contrast, the glibenclamide treated group revealed significantly higher Zn and Mg levels compared with the newly diagnosed group, while the serum level of Cu was not significantly modified. In conclusion, treatment with metformin led to a reduction in serum Cu and an increase in serum Zn concentrations, whereas glibenclamide treatment displayed enhancement in serum Zn and Mg levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies malnutrition as the biggest threat to public health worldwide, and this condition is observed in 20-60% of hospitalized patients. Malnutrition is a state of the body in which due to insufficient supply or incorrect absorption of essential nutrients, the body composition changes and the body's functions are impaired. Malnutrition is associated not only with reduced body mass index but also with obesity. SUMMARY Obesity is defined as a paradoxical state of malnutrition, which despite excessive energy consumption is associated with a shortage of individual microelements. Deficiency or lack of homeostasis of essential micronutrients can significantly affect daily performance, intellectual and emotional state, but also the physical state of the body. Food deficiency can also contribute to further weight gain or the development of other metabolic diseases. Micronutrient deficiency may include not only incorrect dietary choices and insufficient access to nutrient-rich foods but also changes in the absorption, distribution or excretion of nutrients, and altered micronutrient metabolism resulting from systemic inflammation caused by obesity. An effective therapy method recommended for people with morbid obesity is bariatric surgery aimed at both weight loss and improving quality of life. Unfortunately, the effects of these treatments are often medium- and long-term complications associated with micronutrient deficiency as a result of reduced consumption or absorption. Therefore, the use of bariatric surgery in patients with extreme obesity can affect the metabolism of microelements and increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies. Key Messages: Studies by many authors indicate a higher incidence of food deficiency among people with excessive body weight, than in people with normal body weight of the same age and same sex. Monitoring the concentration of minerals and vitamins in blood serum is a good practice in the treatment of obesity. The proper nutritional status of the body affects not only the state of health but also the effectiveness of therapy. The aim of the review was to present the issue of malnutrition in the context of obesity.

BACKGROUND The HEALTHY Study was a multicomponent school-based intervention, designed to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in middle-school students. OBJECTIVES We examined whether the difference in dietary magnesium intake, BMI percentile, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations from 6th to 8th grade were related in the intervention schools and in the control schools that participated in the HEALTHY Study. METHODS A total of 2181 ethnically diverse students, from 11.3 to 13.7 y of age, with completed dietary records, BMI percentile, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations at 6th and 8th grades were included. Dietary magnesium intake was self-reported using the Block Kids FFQ. A hierarchical multiple regression model was used to determine whether the differences in dietary magnesium intake, BMI percentile, and plasma glucose and insulin concentrations from 6th to 8th grades were related, while adjusting for dietary calcium intake and total energy intake. RESULTS The difference in dietary magnesium intake was significantly related to changes in BMI percentile from 6th to 8th grade in intervention and in control schools [intervention: β: -0.07; 95% CI: -0.58, -0.02; P = 0.03; R2 (regression coefficient effect size): 0.14; 95% CI for R2: 0.10, 0.17; control: β: -0.08; 95% CI: -0.63, -0.09; P = 0.01; R2: 0.12; 95% CI for R2: 0.08, 0.15]. The difference in dietary magnesium intake was not related to plasma glucose and insulin concentrations in intervention and in control schools. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that a multicomponent intervention was associated with reduced risk of T2DM, and that this association may be modulated, in part, by magnesium. The differences in dietary magnesium intake from 6th to 8th grade were negatively related to changes in BMI percentile among middle-school students.

Whole-blood magnesium and blood lipids are individually and jointly associated with an elevated likelihood of youngsters being overweight or obese: A matched case-control study using the propensity score. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Youngsters who are overweight or obese (YOO) have become an important global health concern. Some micronutrients may be modifiable influential factors. This study aimed to investigate the individual and joint association of whole-blood magnesium (WBMg) and total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in YOO. METHODS This is a propensity score matching-based case-control study. YOO was defined depending on age- and sex-specific body mass index z-score, calculated with SAS macros (%group_standard and %WHO2007) from the World Health Organization website. WBMg, blood lipids, and covariates were carefully measured by trained technicians using a whole-blood, five-element, basic analyzer and atomic absorption spectrometer or automatic biochemical analyzer. Locally weighted scattered plot smoothing and multivariable conditional logistic regression models were applied to estimate the associations of WBMg and blood lipids in YOO. RESULTS WBMg was positively associated with YOO. The adjusted likelihood of YOO significantly increased by 21% (odds ratio: 1.21; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-1.33) with per-interquartile range elevation of WBMg. Compared with the 1st quartile, adjusted odds ratios among youngsters in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartiles of WBMg were 1.11 (95% CI, 0.92-1.35), 1.29 (95% CI, 1.06-1.57), and 1.47 (95% CI, 1.18-1.83), respectively. Furthermore, the relationship between WBMg and YOO was moderated by lipid profiles. Compared with those having lower (< median) WBMg and TC, TG, LDL-C, or higher (≥ median) HDL-C, youngsters with both higher WBMg and TC, TG, LDL-C, or lower HDL-C had higher YOO odds, which averagely increased by 188%, 250%, 339%, and 369%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS WBMg was an independent risk factor of YOO, and the associations were stronger among those with unhealthy blood lipids. Our findings can help to guide clinical and public health policies on the relevance of magnesium nutritional status.

Abstract
Background: A low level of serum magnesium ion (Mg2+) is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). However, the molecular mechanism of Mg2+ deficiency has not been fully clarified. The current study sought to assesses the effect of reactive oxygen species on the expression of Mg2+ channels and miRNA. Methods: The expression of Mg2+ channels and miRNA were examined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Intracellular Mg2+ concentration was measured by Magnesium Green fluorescence measurement. Results: The mRNA level of transient receptor potential melastatin 6 (TRPM6), which functions as Mg2+ influx channel in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) of the kidney, was decreased by glycated albumin (GA), but not by insulin in rat renal tubule-derived NRK-52E cells. The mRNA levels of TRPM7, a homologue of TRPM6, and CNNM2, a Mg2+ efflux transporter located at the basolateral membrane of DCT, were changed by neither GA nor insulin. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was increased by GA. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) dose-dependently decreased TRPM6 mRNA, but it inversely increased the reporter activity of TRPM6. H2O2 accelerated the degradation of TRPM6 mRNA in actinomycin D assay without affecting TRPM7 and CNNM2 mRNA expressions. Nine miRNAs were considered as candidates for the regulator of stability of TRPM6 mRNA. Among them, miR-24-3p expression was increased by H2O2. The H2O2-induced reduction of TRPM6 mRNA was rescued by miR-24-3p siRNA. Magnesium Green fluorescence measurement showed that Mg2+ influx is suppressed by H2O2, which was rescued by an antioxidant and miR-24-3p siRNA. Conclusions: We suggest that GA decreases TRPM6 expression mediated by the elevation of ROS and miR-24-3p in renal tubular epithelial cells of T2D.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate serum, hair, and urinary trace element and mineral content in normal-weight and obese women in relation to metabolic risk factors. A total of 80 women aged 30–70 y.o. were enrolled in the obese group (n = 40) and normal-weight group (n = 40). Serum, hair, and urinary trace element and mineral levels were assessed using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. Body fat percentage was evaluated using bioimpedance. Obese subjects were characterized by significantly higher body fat percentage, blood pressure, serum triglyceride concentration, and insulin resistance. Serum Ca, Fe, Mg, Se, V, Zn levels, hair Fe, Mg, V content, and urinary Se and V concentrations were found to be lower in obese subjects as compared to lean controls. In turn, serum Cu and urinary Fe levels in obese women were characterized by a significant increase. In multiple regression models serum Cu, Se, and Zn levels were significantly associated with BMI even after adjustment for blood biochemistry, body composition, and blood pressure. Serum trace element and mineral levels also significantly contributed to group discrimination. These findings allow to propose that obesity-associated disturbances in trace element and mineral status may at least partially contribute to metabolic risk in obese subjects.

Abstract
Dietary factors may play a key role in the etiology of obesity. The Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) provides a comprehensive overview of the nutrients content of the diet. This study aimed to investigate the association between INQ and obesity in male adolescents. We hypothesize that receiving a high-quality diet reduces the risk of overweight or obese. This study was carried out on 214 obese/overweight as the case group and 321 normal-weight male adolescents as the control group. Dietary intakes of the participants were collected using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The FFQ-derived dietary data were used to calculate the INQ scores. After adjustments for age and height, an inverse association was found between obesity and INQ of iron, vitamin B6, and magnesium, and a positive association was found between obesity and INQ of zinc (all P < 0.05). After further adjustments for nutritional knowledge and calorie intake, an inverse association was observed between obesity and INQ of vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, selenium, and magnesium (all P < 0.05). The positive association of obesity and INQ of zinc remained significant after adjustments. A higher intake of vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, selenium, and magnesium and a lower intake of zinc may be protective against adolescent obesity. More longitudinal studies are required to investigate the relationship between these nutrients and obesity.

The effect of magnesium supplementation on anthropometric indices: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of clinical trials. Br J Nutr 2021; 125:644-656. Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Mg supplementation on anthropometric indices consisting of body weight, waist circumference (WC), BMI and body fat percentage. In this systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar from databases inception up to February 2020 for relevant randomised controlled trials. Quality of evidence was evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration Tool. All the outcomes of this meta-analysis were pooled using the random effect model. Analysis of dose–response for Mg dosage was carried out using a fractional polynomial model. The systematic review and meta-analysis include twenty-eight randomised clinical trials, comprising 2013 participants. There were no significant changes in anthropometric indices after Mg supplementation in the overall analysis. However, subgroup analysis revealed that Mg supplementation decreases WC in subjects with BMI > 30 kg/m2 (obese) (twelve trials, n 997 participants; weighted mean difference = –2·09 cm, 95 % CI –4·12, –0·07, P = 0·040; I2 = 0 %). Dose–response analysis revealed a non-significant non-linear effect of supplementation dosage on anthropometric indices. The results suggest that Mg supplementation is associated with lower WC only in obese subjects. However, more high-quality studies are needed to clarify the nature of this association.

Dietary magnesium intake was self-reported using the Block Kids Food Frequency Questionnaire. A hierarchical multiple regression model was used to determine the relationships between dietary magnesium intake, BMI percentile, and glycemic indices at baseline and end of the HEALTHY Study, adjusting for magnesium intake from supplements, total energy intake, and fitness level. RESULTS Dietary magnesium intake was related to BMI percentile at baseline and at end of the HEATHY Study (β = -0.05, 95% CI = -0.02 to 0, p = 0.04; β = -0.06, 95% CI = -0.02 to -0.003, p = 0.004); R 2 [regression coefficient effect size] = 0.03; R 2 = 0.06). Dietary magnesium intake was not related to plasma insulin and glucose concentrations at baseline and end of the HEALTHY Study. CONCLUSION Dietary magnesium intake was inversely related to BMI percentile among middle school students from the HEALTHY Study. Research is required to evaluate the dose-response relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption (good sources of magnesium) and risk of T2DM in children and adolescents. This relationship also needs to be explored among different BMI categories.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg2+) deficiency is probably the most underestimated electrolyte imbalance in Western countries. It is frequent in obese patients, subjects with type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, both in adulthood and in childhood. This narrative review aims to offer insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms linking Mg2+ deficiency with obesity and the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Literature highlights critical issues about the treatment of Mg2+ deficiency, such as the lack of a clear definition of Mg2+ nutritional status, the use of different Mg2+ salts and dosage and the different duration of the Mg2+ supplementation. Despite the lack of agreement, an appropriate dietary pattern, including the right intake of Mg2+, improves metabolic syndrome by reducing blood pressure, hyperglycemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. This occurs through the modulation of gene expression and proteomic profile as well as through a positive influence on the composition of the intestinal microbiota and the metabolism of vitamins B1 and D.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In Europe, more than half of the population is overweight and obese. Around 2.8 million people die each year worldwide as a result of conditions linked to being overweight or obese. This study aimed to analyze the policies, approaches, and solutions that address the social and health unmet needs of obese patients, at different levels, in order to simulate the definition of an integrated approach, and to provide and share examples of innovative solutions supporting health promotion, disease prevention, and integration of services to improve the collaboration between the different health and care stakeholders involved across the country and in the lives of obese patients. A collaborative approach involving various levels of government and regional experts from different European countries was applied to identify, explore, and evaluate different aspects of the topic, from the innovation perspective and focusing on a European and a regional vision. Currently, people prefer more foods rich in fats, sugars, and salt/sodium than fruits, vegetables, and fiber. This behavior leads to a significant negative impact on their health-related quality of life. Changes in healthcare systems, healthy policy, and approaches to patient care and better implementation of the different prevention strategies between all the stakeholders are needed, taking advantage of the digital transformation of health and care. Such changes can support obese patients in their fight against an unhealthy lifestyle and at the same time reduce healthcare costs.

Abstract
Background: Magnesium is a mineral that modulates several physiological processes. However, its relationship with intestinal microbiota has been scarcely studied. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the role of dietary magnesium content to modulate the intestinal microbiota of Wistar male rats. Methods: Rats were randomly assigned one of three diets: a control diet (C-Mg; 1000 mg/kg), a low magnesium content diet (L-Mg; 60 mg/kg), and a high magnesium content diet (H-Mg; 6000 mg/kg), for two weeks. After treatment, fecal samples were collected. Microbiota composition was assessed by sequencing the V3–V4 hypervariable region. Results: The C-Mg and L-Mg groups had more diversity than H-Mg group. CF231, SMB53, Dorea, Lactobacillus and Turibacter were enriched in the L-Mg group. In contrast, the phyla Proteobacteria, Parabacteroides, Butyricimonas, and Victivallis were overrepresented in the H-Mg group. PICRUSt analysis indicated that fecal microbiota of the L-Mg group were encoded with an increased abundance of metabolic pathways involving carbohydrate metabolism and butanoate metabolism. Conclusion: Dietary magnesium supplementation can result in intestinal dysbiosis development in a situation where there is no magnesium deficiency. Conversely, low dietary magnesium consumption is associated with microbiota with a higher capacity to harvest energy from the diet.

Abstract
Weight gain and metabolic syndrome are common side effects of second-generation antipsychotics and carry significant health consequences both in childhood and into adulthood. This review highlights evidence-based, non-pharmacologic interventions to assist in the management of these side effects. Such intervention categories include dietary, physical activity, sleep, stress management, and nutritional supplementation. Interventions with the highest quality evidence include increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, increasing physical activity, improving sleep, and fish oil supplementation. We suggest that clinicians work with patients on managing metabolic side effects in a patient-centered way, incorporating principles of motivational interviewing, to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to perform comparative analysis of hair trace element and mineral levels in children with Down's syndrome, growth delay, and obesity in order to reveal common and specific patterns. Hair Zn (14, 7, and 15%), Ca (38%, 24%, and 47%), and Mg (33%, 31%, and 49%) levels in children with Down's syndrome, obesity, and growth delay were lower than the respective control values. At the same time, patients with Down's syndrome and growth delay were characterized by 27% and 21%, as well as 24% and 20% lower hair Co as well as Cu content than healthy examinees. Certain alterations were found to be disease-specific. Particularly, in Down's syndrome children, hair Cr, Fe, and V levels were significantly lower, whereas hair P content exceeded the control values. Obese children were characterized by significantly increased hair Cr content. At the same time, hair Mn and Si levels in children with growth delay were lower as compared with the controls. In regression models, all three studied diseases were considered as negative predictors of hair Cu content. Down's syndrome and growth delay, but not obesity, were inversely associated with hair Co content. Both Down's syndrome and obesity were inversely associated with hair Zn content. Based on the revealed similarities in altered hair element, content it is proposed that deficiency of essential elements may predispose Down's syndrome patients to certain syndrome comorbidities including growth delay and obesity, although further detailed studies are required.

Abstract
Previous studies reported inconsistent findings regarding the effects of magnesium supplementation on obesity measures. This study was done to quantify the effect of magnesium supplementation on body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Circumference (WC), Body Fat (BF) percentage and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR). Four online databases (Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane library) were searched until March 2020 using relevant keywords. Random-effects model was used to pool effect sizes; Cochran's Q-test and I2 index assessed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis and Egger test were used to check the robustness of findings and the possibility of publication bias, respectively. Thirty-two RCTs including different dosage of magnesium (48-450 mg/d), and duration (6-24 weeks) were entered to this study. Magnesium supplementation resulted in a great reduction in BMI [Weighted Mean Difference (WMD): -0.21 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.41, -0.001, P = 0.048, I2 = 89.5%, n = 22], which was mainly driven by the effect among those with magnesium deficiency, insulin resistance related disorders, and obesity at baseline. No significant change was observed in bodyweight, WC, BF percentage and WHR as compared to controls. However, the change in body weight, and WC was significant in subgroups of participants with insulin resistance related disorders, hypertension, obesity, magnesium deficiency at baseline, and females. We found a significant reduction in BMI following magnesium supplementation. The change in body weight and WC were evident in certain subgroups.

Abstract
Sodium is an essential component of the human body, with known influences on obesity. This paper reports the effect of cube natural sea salt (CNS) on the reduction of obesity in high fat diet-induced obese C57BL/6 mice and 3T3-L1 adipocytes, by ameliorating the obesity parameters and obesity-related gene mechanisms. The suppression of high fat diet-induced obesity and differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes by sea salt depends on the manufacturing process and mineral content. The manufacturing method using only new sea water (Cube natural sea salt) decreases the magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S) content in the salt with different crystallization and morphologies, compared to the general manufacturing method (Generally manufactured sea salt, GS). Mg in salt is known to considerably affect obesity; an appropriate concentration of magnesium chloride (MgCl2) reduces lipid accumulation significantly and regulates the lipogenesis and liver enzyme activity. Our results indicate that sea salt contains an appropriate level of Mg as compared to table salt (purified salt, NaCl), and is important for regulating obesity, as observed in the in vivo and in vitro anti-obesity effects of CNS. The Mg content and mineral ratio of sea salt are important factors that ameliorate the lipid metabolism and liver enzyme activity in high fat diet induced obesity, and contents of Mg in sea salt can be altered by modifying the manufacturing process.

Abstract
Background:Fat deposits in obesity can trigger oxidative stress and systemic inflammation that cause insulin resistance, which increases the risk of diabetes mellitus. Magnesium is a cofactor of various enzymes in glucose metabolism that plays a role in the process of glucose uptake in the muscles and also acts as an anti-inflammatory. Good intake of nutrients can prevent the metabolic diseases.Objectives:to evaluate the correlation among serum magnesium,energy, macro nutrient and magnesium intake with fasting blood glucose levels in overweight and obese adults.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 93 overweight(BMI ≥ 25-29.9 kg/m2) and obese (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) adults in February to May 2019 in Serengan District, Surakarta City. The measurement of serum magnesium using kalorimetri and fasting blood glucose using hexokinase method. Energy, macro nutritionand magnesium intake was assessed using 2x24 hour food recall. The bivariate analysis was carried out using Pearson correlation with p value of <0.05 followed by multivariable multiple linear regression analysis with 95% CI.Results:There was no significant correlation of energy, macro nutrient and magnesium intake with blood glucose level. There was a significant negative correlation between serum magnesium and fasting blood glucose in overweight and obese adults (p=0.009; r=-0.286; CI95%=-71.321–(-10.480)).Conclusions: Serum magnesium are the factors most associated with blood glucose in overweight and obese adults. Blood glucose will increase along with decreasing level of serum magnesium.ABSTRAKLatar Belakang: Timbunan lemak pada obesitas menjadi pemicu terjadinya stress oksidatif dan inflamasi sitemik penyebab resistensi insulin sehingga risiko terjadinya diabetes mellitus akan meningkat. Magnesium merupakan kofaktor berbagai enzim dalam metabolisme glukosa yang berperan dalam proses ambilan glukosa di otot dan juga sebagai antiinflamasi. Asupan zat gizi yang baik dapat mencegah terjadinya penyakit metabolik.Tujuan: untuk mengevaluasi hubungan magnesium serum, asupan energi, zat gizi makro dan magnesium dengan glukosa darah puasa pada dewasa overweight dan obesitas.Metode: Penelitian crossectional terhadap 93 orang dewasa dengan status gizi lebih atau overweight (IMT ≥ 25-29,9 kg/m2) dan obesitas (IMT ≥30 kg/m2) pada bulan Februari hingga Mei 2019 di Kecamatan Serengan Kota Surakarta. Pemeriksaan magnesium serum dengan metode kalorimetri dan glukosa darah puasa dengan metode heksokinase. Penilaian asupan energi, zat gizi makro dan magnesium dengan food recall 2x24 jam. Analisis bivariat menggunakan korelasi Pearson dengan nilai p < 0,05 dilanjutkan analisis multivariabel regresi linier ganda dengan CI 95%.Hasil: Tidak ada korelasi signifikan asupan energi, zat gizi makro dan magnesium dengan glukosa darah. Adanya korelasi negatif yang signifikan antara kadar serum magnesium dengan glukosa darah puasa pada dewasa overweight dan obesitas (p=0,009; r=-0,286; CI95%=-71,321–(-10,480)).Kesimpulan: Kadar magnesium serum merupakan faktor yang paling berhubungan dengan glukosa darah pada orang dewasa overweight dan obesitas di Kecamatan Serengan Kota Surakarta. Glukosa darah akan meningkat seiring dengan penurunan kadar magnesium serum.

Abstract
Magnesium is a vital cation that takes part in many cellular processes. Magnesium balance can be disturbed in multiple conditions, and differences in magnesium concentration can be responsible for numerous physiological and pathological processes. Magnesium deficiency is commonly associated with liver diseases, and may result from low nutrient uptake, greater urinary secretion, low serum albumin concentration, or hormone inactivation. In turn, low magnesium content in serum and liver tissue can lead to the progression of these diseases, due to a disruption in mitochondrial function, defective protein kinase C (PKC) translocation, inflammatory responses, oxidative stress, or metabolic disorders. Furthermore, magnesium supplementation can improve liver function in certain liver diseases. This paper comprehensively reviews the changes in magnesium concentrations associated with liver cirrhosis, alcoholic liver disease (ALD), liver cancer, and viral hepatitis, and explains how such changes may in turn impact these disease processes.

Abstract
Bariatric surgeries are considered the only effective way of weight loss therapy in morbidly obese patients, i.e. body mass index ≥ 35. However, micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition are common after most bariatric procedures and thus, pre- and postoperative nutritional assessment and corrections are advised. The present review is presented in an effort to describe in some detail about prevalence, and mechanisms of macro- and micronutrient deficiencies in obese and post-bariatric surgery individuals. We also aimed to summarize the data on screening and supplementation of macro- and micronutrients before and after bariatric surgeries.

AbstractThe relationship between serum Mg and blood cell counts in Chinese adult diabetes or central obesity was assessed by investigating 8163 subjects with China Health and Nutrition Survey (mean age 59⋅6 years, 54⋅9 % men). Participants were classified according to blood Mg (below 0⋅65 mmol/l, or 0⋅66–0⋅94 mmol/l or above 0⋅95 mmol/l), type 2 diabetes (yes/no) and central obesity (yes/no). Leucocytes, erythrocytes, platelets (PLT), Hb and glycated Hb (HbA1c) were determined using standardised methods and conditions. HbAc1, leucocytes and PLT were significantly higher among subjects with central obesity than without central obesity (P < 0⋅05). A significant increase for Hb, erythrocytes, PLT, but not leucocytes, across progressive Mg groups was observed in subjects without diabetes (P < 0⋅05). Hb, erythrocytes and HbAc1 were significantly higher among subjects with higher Mg than in subjects with lower Mg with diabetes (P < 0⋅05). Central obesity disturbed the positive association between PLT count and serum Mg. Type 2 diabetes caused metabolism disorder in serum Mg, blood sugar and blood cell count. Hb, erythrocytes and PLT, but not leucocytes, are positively correlated with serum Mg, but this association is somehow disturbed by type 2 diabetes or central obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of obesity has increased worldwide. Abnormal plasma level of some trace elements may be associated with obesity. The present study was designed to compare the plasma level of zinc, phosphate, calcium and magnesium with the degree of body mass index and waist circumference. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross sectional study 149 persons (20-60 years old) from March 2014 till April 2017 were included. Definition of central obesity was waist circumference (WC)≥ 102 cm and ≥88 cm in men and women, respectively. Also BMI categorized to: normal weight: 18.50-24.99, overweight: 25.00-29.99 and obese: ≥30 kg/m2 respectively. Mg, Ca, P and Zinc in plasma was checked after12 h fasting in each persons. Comparison between the level of Mg, P, Ca and Zinc by three categories of BMI or waist circumference performed. The data were analyzed by independent T-test and one-way ANOVA. Scheffe method was used to determine post-hoc pair-wise comparisons. The relationship between BMI and concentration of elements was detected by linear correlation and Cubic model. A p ≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Statistical analyses were executed by SPSS version 20. RESULTS In this study, 32.2% male and remainder female, mean age of 42.26 ± 13.03 were participated. 40.9% were normal and 59.1% obese base on waist circumference. Also 24.8% normal,44.3% overweight and remainder was obese according to BMI. Obese subjects base on waist circumference had significantly lower serum Zinc(pvalue:0.002), Ca (pvalue:0.0001)and Mg(pvalue:0.042) concentration. Whereas, P concentration was significantly higher in obese cases in comparison with normal subjects(pvalue:0.012). Also normal cases had significantly higher serum Zinc (pvalue: 0.0001), Ca (pvalue:0.0001), and Mg(pvalue:0.006) concentration compared to overweight and obese subjects according to BMI categorizes. CONCLUSION Inverse correlation present between plasma zinc, calcium and magnesium level and BMI and waist circumference, but positive correlation seen between P level and waist circumference. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effect of dietary or supplemental interventions on obesity and central obesity.

Abstract
Approximately 30% of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) have hypomagnesemia (blood magnesium (Mg2+) concentration <0.7 mmol/L). In T2D patients, treatment with metformin is associated with reduced blood Mg2+ levels. To investigate how T2D and metformin affect Mg2+ homeostasis db/m and db/db mice were treated with metformin or placebo. Mice were housed in metabolic cages to measure food and water intake, and to collect urine and feces. Serum and urinary Mg2+ concentrations were determined and mRNA expression of magnesiotropic genes was determined in kidney and distal colon using RT-qPCR. Db/db mice had significantly lower serum Mg2+ levels than db/m mice. Mild hypermagnesuria was observed in the db/db mice at two weeks, but not at four weeks. Metformin-treatment had no effect on the serum Mg2+ concentration and on the urinary Mg2+ excretion. Both in kidney and distal colon of db/db mice, there was a compensatory upregulation in the mRNA expression of magnesiotropic genes, such as transient receptor potential melastatin 6 (Trpm6), whereas metformin treatment did not affect gene expression levels. In conclusion, we show that T2D causes hypomagnesemia and that metformin treatment has no effect on Mg2+ homeostasis in mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the associations between serum magnesium (Mg) concentration with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HP) and hyperuricaemia (HU) in patients with radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS The present study was conducted at the Health Management Center of Xiangya Hospital. Radiographic OA was evaluated for patients aged over 40 years with basic characteristics and blood biochemical assessment. Serum Mg concentration was measured using the chemiluminescence method. MetS, DM, HP and HU were diagnosed based on standard protocols. The associations between serum Mg concentration with MetS, DM, HP and HU were evaluated by conducting multivariable adjusted logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 962 patients with radiographic knee OA were included. Compared with the lowest quintile, the multivariable adjusted ORs and related 95% CIs of DM were 0.40 (95% CI 0.23 to 0.70, p=0.001), 0.33 (95% CI 0.18 to 0.60, p<0.001), 0.27 (95% CI 0.14 to 0.52, p<0.001) and 0.22 (95% CI 0.11 to 0.44, p<0.001) in the second, third, fourth and highest quintiles of serum Mg, respectively (p for trend <0.001); the multivariable adjusted ORs of HU were 0.33 (95% CI 0.19 to 0.59, p<0.001), 0.52 (95% CI 0.30 to 0.91, p=0.022) and 0.39 (95% CI 0.22 to 0.70, p=0.001) in the third, fourth and highest quintiles of serum Mg, respectively (p for trend <0.001); and the multivariable adjusted ORs of MetS were 0.59 (95% CI 0.36 to 0.94, p=0.027) in the second and 0.56 (95% CI 0.34 to 0.93, p=0.024) in the highest quintiles of serum Mg. However, the inverse association between serum Mg and the prevalence of MetS was non-linear (p for trend=0.067). There was no significant association between serum Mg and HP in patients with OA. CONCLUSIONS The serum Mg concentration was inversely associated with the prevalence of MetS, DM and HU in patients with radiographic knee OA. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, cross-sectional study.

Abstract
Up to 15% of the population have mild to moderate chronic hypomagnesemia, which is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease. The kidney is the key organ for magnesium homeostasis, but our understanding of renal magnesium regulation is very limited. Uromodulin (UMOD) is the most abundant urinary protein in humans, and here we report that UMOD has a role in renal magnesium homeostasis. Umod-knockout (Umod -/-) mice excreted more urinary magnesium than WT mice and displayed up-regulation of genes promoting magnesium absorption. The majority of magnesium is absorbed in the thick ascending limb. However, both mouse strains responded similarly to the diuretic agent furosemide, indicating appropriate function of the thick ascending limb in the Umod -/- mice. Magnesium absorption is fine-tuned in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) via the apical magnesium channel transient receptor potential melastatin 6 (TRPM6). We observed decreased apical Trpm6 staining in the DCT of Umod -/- mice. Applying biotinylation assays and whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, we found that UMOD enhances TRPM6 cell-surface abundance and current density from the extracellular space. UMOD physically interacted with TRPM6 and thereby impaired dynamin-dependent TRPM6 endocytosis. WT mice fed a low-magnesium diet had an increased urinary UMOD secretion compared with the same mice on a regular diet. Our results suggest that increased urinary UMOD secretion in low-magnesium states reduces TRPM6 endocytosis and thereby up-regulates TRPM6 cell-surface abundance to defend against further urinary magnesium losses.

Abstract
Overweight and obesity are highly prevalent throughout the world and can adversely affect the nutritional status of individuals. Studies have shown that many people with obesity have inadequate intake of iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, folate and vitamins A and B12, likely as a result of poor diet quality. Nutritional inadequacies or deficiencies may also occur due to altered pharmacokinetics in the individual with obesity and due to interactions in those with overweight or obesity with various pharmaceuticals. However, it has been demonstrated that the adult population in the United States as a whole is deficient in certain micronutrients as a result of the availability and overconsumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient processed foods. Poor nutrition may contribute to the development of certain chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, which is already more prevalent in those with obesity. Clinicians need to be aware of these gaps, particularly in those individuals with obesity who are undergoing bariatric surgery or taking pharmaceutical products long term to facilitate weight loss. Patients with overweight or obesity likely struggle to achieve a balanced diet and may benefit from consultation with a dietitian. Along with providing recommendations for healthy eating and exercise, supplementation with specific micronutrients or multivitamins should be considered for individuals at the highest risk for or with established deficiencies. Further research is needed to understand the factors underlying nutritional inadequacies in individuals with overweight or obesity, as well as the outcomes of treatment strategies employed to address them.

Abstract
Essential elements (Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe, Cr, Mn and V) and non-essential elements (As, Cd, Hg and Pb) were measured in scalp hair samples of 45 diabetic subjects and 59 control subjects in Japan using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. All diabetic subjects took insulin and/or antidiabetic agents, with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ranging between 6.2 and 14.4%. The levels of Zn, Cu and Cr in the diabetic subjects (HbA1c>7) were significantly lower than those in the control subjects (p<0.05), and these concentrations decreased significantly with increases in HbA1c (p<0.01). The levels of Fe and Mg in the diabetic subjects were insignificantly lower, and the concentration of Fe decreased significantly with increases in HbA1c (p<0.05) and the concentration of Mn tended to decrease (p<0.10). In contrast, the concentration of As tended to increase with increases in HbA1c (p<0.10). The concentrations of other elements, such as Ca, Mn, V, Pb, Cd and Hg, in the diabetic subjects were similar to those of control subjects, and did not correlate with HbA1c. The average of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in the diabetic subjects was 77.7±29.7 mL/min/1.73 m2 with large variation (12.7-148 mL/min/1.73 m2), and previous study reported the increase of urinary excretion of Zn, Cr, Mn and Mg in diabetic subjects. The decreases of Zn, Cu, Cr, Fe and Mg concentrations in hair may reflect increased urinary excretion of these elements due to diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Bone-regulating hormones and nutrients play an important role in influencing metabolic health. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine whether bone-regulating hormones and nutrients, such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD), and magnesium (Mg) could be used to characterize the metabolically healthy obese (MHO) phenotype. METHODS: This study included 27 overweight or obese participants (14 men/13 women) classified as MHO ( n = 14) or metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) ( n = 13) based on the presence or absence of metabolic abnormalities, determined by percentage body fat, percentage trunk fat, and waist circumference. Biochemical (serum concentrations of hormones and cytokines such as PTH, 25OHD, ionized Mg (iMg), cytokines, lipids, glycemic indices), physiological (percentage body fat, percentage trunk fat, blood pressure (BP)), and dietary intake (Mg intake, calcium intake) measurements were obtained. RESULTS: Serum PTH concentrations were significantly lower ( p = 0.005) in the MHO group (39.68 ± 11.06 pg/mL) compared with the MUO group (63.78 ± 25.82 pg/mL). Serum iMg concentrations were higher ( p = 0.052) in the MHO group (0.565 ± 0.41 mmol/L) than in the MUO group (0.528 ± 0.050 mmol/L). Serum concentrations of osteocalcin were also higher (10.37 ± 3.70 ng/mL) in the MHO compared with the MUO (6.51 ± 4.14 ng/mL) group ( p = 0.017). The MHO group had significantly lower serum insulin concentrations ( p = 0.006) and diastolic BP ( p = 0.035). Concentrations of serum 25OHD, total triglycerides, C-reactive protein and systolic BP did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that bone-regulating hormones and nutrients, especially serum PTH, osteocalcin concentrations, and dietary Mg intakes, can help to characterize the MHO phenotype.

Abstract
An extensive body of evidence documents the importance of the gut microbiome both in health and in a variety of human diseases. Cell and animal studies describing this relationship abound, whilst clinical studies exploring the associations between changes in gut microbiota and the corresponding metabolites with neurodegeneration in the human brain have only begun to emerge more recently. Further, the findings of such studies are often difficult to translate into simple clinical applications that result in measurable health outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to appraise the literature on a select set of faecal biomarkers from a clinician’s perspective. This practical review aims to examine key physiological processes that influence both gastrointestinal, as well as brain health, and to discuss how tools such as the characterisation of commensal bacteria, the identification of potential opportunistic, pathogenic and parasitic organisms and the quantification of gut microbiome biomarkers and metabolites can help inform clinical decisions of nutrition and lifestyle medicine practitioners.

Abstract
Background The pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been well recognized yet. Objective This study aimed to investigate the association between serum magnesium concentration and NAFLD. Methods Study participants were healthy individuals who had undergone liver biopsies between January 2012 and August 2015 as a routine pre-transplant check-up before living donor liver transplantation. Liver biopsy specimens were evaluated by an expert pathologist regarding presence of hepatic steatosis and steatohepatitis. Serum magnesium concentration was measured and compared in those with normal liver biopsy and those with steatosis and steatohepatitis. Results A total of 226 individuals were included. Eighty-two individuals (36.2%) had hepatic steatosis and 22 (9.7%) individuals had steatohepatitis and steatosis in their liver histology. Lower serum magnesium concentration was independently associated with hepatic steatosis (OR: 0.059; 95% CI: 0.011-0.325, p = 0.001). Serum magnesium concentration was independently associated with steatohepatitis compared to those without steatohepatitis (1.80 ± 0.48 mg/dl and 2.18 ± 0.31 mg/dl) (OR: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.02-0.41, p = 0.001). Serum magnesium concentration was significantly lower in individuals with steatohepatitis (1.80 ± 0.48 mg/dl) compared to individuals without steatosis (2.23 ± 0.31 mg/dl, p < 0.001) and individuals with only steatosis (2.07 ± 0.29 mg/dl, p = 0.017). Conclusion Serum magnesium concentration is independently associated with hepatic steatosis and steatohepatitis in our study population.
