Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing loss, a public health issue in older populations, is closely related to functional decline. OBJECTIVE To investigate the longitudinal associations between 4 dietary indices and hearing status. METHODS Data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging were used and included 882 participants ≥45 y of age. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and 4 dietary scores (Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet [MIND], Mediterranean style diet score [MDS], Alternative Healthy Eating Index [AHEI], and Healthy Eating Index [HEI]) were calculated as averages over time. Hearing status was examined using pure-tone audiometry, and pure-tone average (PTA) of hearing thresholds were calculated at speech-level (PTA(500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz)), low (PTA(500, 1000 Hz)), and high (PTA(4000, 8000 Hz)) frequencies, with lower thresholds indicating better hearing. Multivariable linear mixed-effect models were used to examine associations between dietary indices and hearing threshold change over time adjusted for confounders. RESULTS At baseline, the mean age of participants was 67 y and 55% were female. Over a median of 8 y of follow-up, MDS ≥7 was associated with 3.5 (95% CI: -6.5, -0.4) and 5.0 (95% CI: -9.1, -1.0) dB lower PTA(500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz) and PTA(4000, 8000 Hz), respectively, compared with MDS ≤3; the highest tertile of the AHEI was associated with 2.3 (95% CI: -4.6, -0.1) and 5.0 (95% CI: -8.0, -2.0) dB lower PTA(500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz) and PTA(4000, 8000 Hz); and each standard deviation increment in HEI was associated with 1.6 dB (95% CI: -2.7, -0.6), 1.1 dB (95% CI: -2.1, -0.1), and 2.1 dB (95% CI: -3.5, -0.6) lower PTA(500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz), PTA(500, 1000 Hz), and PTA(4000, 8000 Hz), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to healthy dietary patterns was associated with better hearing status, with stronger associations at high frequencies. Am J Clin Nutr 20xx;x:xx.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite numerous studies that have explored the association between individual antioxidants or specific combinations and the risk of hearing loss, there is lack of information regarding the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) and hearing loss. The conflicting results on this association further highlight the need for more research in this area. This study aims to investigate the association between overall dietary antioxidant intake and the risk of hearing loss among Iranian adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited 3443 adult participants aged between 19 and 67 years (with an average age of 41.4 years ± 8.8) who were employed at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Participants underwent dietary assessment using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The hearing status of each participant was evaluated by a licensed audiologist in a soundproof room, using diagnostic audiometry that adhered to American National Standards specifications and followed standard audiometric clinical procedures. The dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) was calculated using the Ferric Reducing-Antioxidant Power (FRAP) values. RESULTS 43.6% of male participants had hearing loss, while 26.8% among female participants. After accounting for various confounding factors, no significant association was observed between higher levels of dTAC and reduced odds of hearing loss in the overall population. However, among men under the age of 40, higher levels of dTAC were associated with decreased odds of hearing loss, even after adjusting for several covariates (OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.31-1.02, Ptrend = 0.02). This relationship was not evident in men over 40 years of age or among women. CONCLUSION The study found an inverse relationship between higher antioxidant intake in the diet and lower odds of hearing loss, specifically among men who were 40 years old or younger. However, this relationship was not observed in the overall population or among women. Additional prospective studies are necessary to validate these results.

Abstract
It seems that food factors and the type of nutrition have an effect on the function of the auditory system. Hearing is one of the most important senses for social communication and high cognitive behaviors. Sensorineural hearing loss leaves adverse and permanent consequences in all aspects of personal and social life of affected patients. Hence, this narrative review study was designed to determine the relationship between sensorineural hearing loss and type of diet. Based on the inclusion criteria, the full text of 62 articles published between 2005 and 2023 were extracted from Scopus, Medline [PubMed], Web of Science, and Google Scholar websites and constituted the sources of this research. The results of the studies showed that by limiting the consumption of foods rich in cholesterol, sugar, carbohydrates, and protein, hearing is protected against the factors that cause sensorineural hearing loss. Also, increasing the consumption of vegetables, fruits, omega-3, antioxidants in the form of vitamins A, C, E reduce hearing susceptibility due to noise exposure, presbycusis, ototoxic agents, and etc. Healthy diet includes eating all the nutrients the body needs in a balanced way. Healthy lifestyle factors including continuous physical activity, good sleep quality, quitting smoking, stay away from stressful factors or relaxation, and avoiding exposure to environmental noise. By following healthy eating and lifestyle patterns, the conditions for hearing, physical and mental health are provided.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and hearing loss (HL) using data from a tertiary hospital. Our hypothesis regarding the relationship between HL and HbA1c levels was that elevated HbA1c levels are associated with an increased risk of HL. We retrospectively reviewed the medical charts of patients diagnosed with sensorineural HL or diabetes between 2006 and 2021 at the Catholic Medical Center (CMC). Data were collected from the CMC's Clinical Data Warehouse. Participants were selected from patients who were prescribed pure-tone audiometry and an HbA1c blood test. The survey was completed for 5287 participants. The better ear pure-tone audiometry (PTA) for air conduction thresholds at 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz was calculated. Sensorineural HL was defined as a better ear PTA of 25 dB or higher. We used the HbA1c level as a diagnostic criterion for diabetes. The following criteria were used to define the HbA1c level: normal, HbA1c level below 5.6%; prediabetes, level between 5.6 and 6.4%; and diabetes, level of 6.5% or more. Among 5287 participants, 1129 were categorized as normal, 2119 as prediabetic, and 2039 as diabetic. The diabetic group was significantly older (p < 0.05). The PTA also significantly deteriorated in the diabetes group (p < 0.05). We analyzed the effects of age, sex, and HbA1c level on frequency-specific hearing using multiple regression. The hearing thresholds at all frequencies deteriorated significantly with increasing age and HbA1c level (p < 0.05). A case-control study was also performed to facilitate a comprehensive comparison between distinct groups. The participants were categorized into two groups: a case (PTA > 25 dB) and control group (PTA ≤ 25 dB), based on their PTA threshold of four frequencies. After adjusting for age and sex, we found no significant odds ratio (OR) of HL between the prediabetes group and the normal group. Notably, the OR of HL was significantly higher in the diabetes group with each PTA threshold and frequency. The 6.3% HbA1c level cutoff value was determined by analyzing the receiver operating characteristic curve for predicting hearing impairment > 25 dB. Diabetes was associated with hearing loss in all frequency ranges, particularly at high frequencies. Screening for HL is strongly recommended for patients with elevated HbA1c levels.

Abstract
Hearing threshold levels (HTLs) get worse with advancing age in adults. Publications of nationally representative data from U.S. adults have been confined to HTLs from unscreened individuals. ISO 7029:2017 provides equations for the hearing loss of adults of various ages. Equations were generated from a synthesis of international studies of HTLs for "otologically normal" or screened adults. No nationally representative data for screened U.S. adults were included in the ISO synthesis. This study investigated three different levels of screening rigor, referred to here as Screened, Screened+, and Screened++. Median HTLs are provided for Screened (N = 1545) and Screened++ (N = 795) groups from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys for 2011-12 and 2015-16, the two most recent surveys of adults from 20 to 69 years of age with audiograms. Median HTLs from the Screened and Screened++ groups differed slightly between the sexes, were not affected by race/ethnicity, and increased substantially with age. For young adults, there were no differences in HTLs between screened (any level) and unscreened adults, but such differences in HTLs increased with advancing age, especially at higher frequencies. The default power-function model from ISO 7029:2017 did not provide a good description of the median age-associated HTLs from screened U.S. adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate associations of dietary intake components with hearing loss. METHOD Participants were from the population-based Survey of the Health of Wisconsin. The Block food frequency questionnaire measured dietary intake of carbohydrates, fiber, protein, free (added) sugars, fruits, vegetables, saturated and trans fats, and glycemic index. Intake was categorized into quintiles (Q). Hearing loss was self-reported. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations of dietary determinants with hearing loss. Results are presented as odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Final models were adjusted for age, sex, total energy intake, race/ethnicity, education, smoking, and regular physical activity. RESULTS There were 2,839 participants (56% women; Mage = 48.2 [SD = 14.5] years) included. Higher consumption of trans fat (Q5: OR = 1.83, 95% CI [1.27, 2.64]) and higher glycemic index (Q5: OR = 1.34, 95% CI [1.00, 1.80]) were associated with increased odds of hearing loss. Hearing loss was associated with fruit, saturated- and trans-fat intake in women, and trans-fat intake and glycemic index in men. CONCLUSIONS Dietary intake was associated with self-reported hearing loss. Research on mechanistic pathways of associations and public health interventions to prevent hearing loss is needed.

Abstract
Age-related hearing loss affects a significant proportion of adults aged 60 years and above, with a prevalence of 65%. This condition has a negative impact on both physical and mental well-being, and while hearing interventions can help alleviate the effects of hearing loss, they cannot completely restore normal hearing or halt the progression of age-related hearing loss. Oxidative stress and inflammation have been identified as potential contributors to this condition. By addressing modifiable lifestyle risk factors that exacerbate oxidative stress, there may be an opportunity to prevent hearing loss. Therefore, this narrative review provides an overview of the major modifiable lifestyle risk factors associated with age-related hearing loss, that is, exposure to noise and ototoxic chemicals, smoking, diet, physical activity, and the presence of chronic lifestyle diseases, and offers an overview of the role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of this condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine whether food intake modifies the risk of developing hearing impairment (HI) in Japanese adults in their 40s. METHODS Data for individuals who were in their 40s with no HI at baseline and had participated in the survey multiple times were extracted from the National Institute for Longevity Sciences, Longitudinal Study of Aging. A total of 1846 samples observed for up to 11.5 years in 421 participants were included in the analyses. The average 3-day food intake was calculated. HI is defined as a pure-tone average of the better ear at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz greater than 25 dB. The risk of developing HI in the 18 food groups was calculated longitudinally using multivariable cumulative data analyses. RESULTS Even after adjusting basic confounding factors, food groups, and baseline hearing level, significant associations were found between beverage consumption and risk increments for HI (odds ratio [OR] = 2.374, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.141-4.940) and also between mushroom intake and risk reduction (OR = 0.215, 95% CI:0.069-0.667). Other foods did not consistently show significant results when the combination of analysis variables were changed. CONCLUSIONS Although the effect of food on hearing is modest to the extent that the significance varies with the variables used in the analysis, the intake of beverages and mushrooms could potentially modify the risk of developing HI after middle age.

Abstract
Optimization of dietary intake is an essential component in the multidimensional effort to prevent and manage chronic disease. Recently, demand has increased for nutrition-focused management strategies for chronic tinnitus. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate 10 dietary items for their association with changes in subjective tinnitus severity. A secondary aim was to develop an algorithm to better identify those individuals who might benefit from dietary modification strategies. A total of 5017 anonymous users of the TinnitusTalk forum completed an online survey regarding how various dietary items affected the severity of their tinnitus. Results suggest that, while intake of caffeine [positive effect (PE): 0.4%; negative effect (NE): 16.2%], alcohol (PE: 2.7%; NE: 13.3%, and salt (PE: 0.1%; NE: 9.9%) was most likely to influence tinnitus severity, it did so only for a small proportion of participants and reported effects were most commonly mild. Further, though a classification algorithm was able to leverage participant demographic, comorbidity, and tinnitus characteristics to identify those individuals most likely to benefit from dietary modification above chance levels, further efforts are required to achieve significant clinical utility. Taken together, these results do not support dietary modification as a primary treatment strategy for chronic tinnitus in the general population, though clinically meaningful effects might be observable in certain individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The world's age-related health concerns continue to rise. Audio-vestibular disorders, such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, are common complaints in the elderly and are associated with social and public health burdens. Various preventative measures can ease their impact, including healthy food consumption, nutritional supplementation, and lifestyle modification. We aim to provide a comprehensive summary of current possible strategies for preventing the age-related audio-vestibular dysfunction. METHODS A PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane review databases search was conducted to identify the relationship between diet, lifestyle, and audio-vestibular dysfunction. "Diet", "nutritional supplement", "lifestyle", "exercise", "physical activity", "tinnitus", "vertigo" and "age-related hearing loss" were used as keywords. RESULTS Audio-vestibular dysfunction develops and progresses as a result of age-related inflammation and oxidative stress. Diets with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects have been proposed to alleviate this illness. A high-fat diet may induce oxidative stress and low protein intake is associated with hearing discomfort in the elderly. Increased carbohydrate and sugar intake positively correlate with the incidence of audio-vestibular dysfunction, whereas a Mediterranean-style diet can protect against the disease. Antioxidants in the form of vitamins A, C, and E; physical activity; good sleep quality; smoking cessation; moderate alcohol consumption; and avoiding noise exposure are also beneficial. CONCLUSIONS Adequate diet or nutritional interventions with lifestyle modification may protect against developing audio-vestibular dysfunction in elderly individuals.

Abstract
BackgroundObservational studies suggest that frailty is associated with hearing loss (HL) but with inconsistent results. This study aims to examine such association and to assess its causality.Materials and methodsThe cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between HL and frailty index (FI). Genetic variants associated with the FI and HL were obtained from a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis and UK Biobank GWAS. The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was used to estimate causal effects. Sensitivity analyses were performed to further validate the robustness of results.ResultsIn this cross-sectional analysis, results support the possibility that frailty may be associated with a higher risk of developing HL, with self-reported [odds ratio (OR) = 2.813; 95% CI, 2.386, 3.317; p < 0.001], speech frequency HL (OR = 1.975; 95% CI, 1.679–2.323; p < 0.001), and high frequency HL (OR = 1.748; 95% CI, 1.459–2.094; p < 0.001). In the adjusted model, frail participants remained at high risk of HL. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies showed a bidirectional causal association between genetically predicted FI and risk of HL (FI for exposure: OR = 1.051; 95% CI, 1.020–1.083; p = 0.001; HL for exposure: OR = 1.527; 95% CI, 1.227–1.901; p < 0.001).ConclusionOur observational study found that inter-individual differences in frailty were associated with the risk of developing HL. Genetic evidence suggests a potential bidirectional causal association between FI and HL. Furthermore, the potential mechanisms of this association require investigation.

Abstract
Diet is essential to health and can modulate inflammatory markers, the microbiota, and epigenetic outcomes. Proper nutrition is also key to good postsurgical outcomes. Diet is challenging to study, resulting in a relative dearth of influential studies. There is substantial evidence regarding the benefits of a whole food plant-predominant diet on health and longevity, in general, but limited evidence regarding otolaryngologic disorders. Diet may be associated with the risk of head and neck cancer, hearing loss, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and sinonasal symptoms. Evidence, however, is heterogenous and often insufficient for treatment recommendations. Many opportunities exist for future research and expansion..

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A relationship between tobacco smoking and hearing loss has been reported; associations with cannabis smoking are unknown. In this cross-sectional population-based study, we examined relationships between hearing loss and smoking (tobacco, cannabis, or co-drug use). METHODS We explored the relationship between hearing loss and smoking among 2705 participants [mean age = 39.41 (SE: 0.36) years] in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011 to 12; 2015 to 16). Smoking status was obtained via questionnaire; four mutually exclusive groups were defined: nonsmokers, current regular cannabis smokers, current regular tobacco smokers, and co-drug users. Hearing sensitivity (0.5 to 8 kHz) was assessed, and two puretone averages (PTAs) computed: low- (PTA 0.5,1,2 ) and high-frequency (PTA 3,4,6,8 ). We defined hearing loss as threshold >15 dB HL. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine sex-specific associations between smoking and hearing loss in the poorer ear (selected based on PTA 0.5,1,2 ) adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes, education, and noise exposure with sample weights applied. RESULTS In the age-sex adjusted model, tobacco smokers had increased odds of low- and high-frequency hearing loss compared with non-smokers [odds ratio (OR) = 1.58, 95% confidence ratio (CI): 1.05 to 2.37 and OR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.58 to 2.45, respectively]. Co-drug users also had greater odds of low- and high-frequency hearing loss [OR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.10 to 3.91 and OR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.27 to 3.96, respectively]. In the fully adjusted multivariable model, compared with non-smokers, tobacco smokers had greater odds of high-frequency hearing loss [multivariable adjusted odds ratio = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.28-2.09]. However, in the fully adjusted model, there were no statistically significant relationships between hearing loss (PTA 0.5,1,2 or PTA 3,4,6,8 ) and cannabis smoking or co-drug use. DISCUSSION Cannabis smoking without concomitant tobacco consumption is not associated with hearing loss. However, sole use of cannabis was relatively rare and the prevalence of hearing loss in this population was low, limiting generalizability of the results. This study suggests that tobacco smoking may be a risk factor for hearing loss but does not support an association between hearing loss and cannabis smoking. More definitive evidence could be derived using physiological measures of auditory function in smokers and from longitudinal studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of self-reported hearing loss and associated risk factors in a representative population-based study of Wisconsin residents. METHOD Survey of the Health of Wisconsin participants with data on self-reported hearing loss were included. We reported prevalence of self-reported hearing loss with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), overall, and stratified by age and sex. Age- and sex-adjusted and multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate determinants of self-reported hearing loss, and results are presented as odds ratios with corresponding 95% CIs. RESULTS There were 2,767 participants (50.7% men) with a mean age of 46 years (range: 21-74) in this study. Prevalence of self-reported hearing loss was 26.8% (24.4, 28.4) and was higher in men (30.3% [27.1, 33.4]) than in women (22.5% [19.9, 25.0]). Prevalence increased with age. After multivariable adjustment, age (per +1 year increase; 1.05 [1.04, 1.06]), male sex (1.57 [1.18, 2.08]), having two chronic diseases (vs. 0; 1.93 [1.16, 3.23]), occupational (2.47 [1.91, 3.19]) and recreational (1.58 [1.22, 2.04]) noise exposure, and poor diet (1.88 [1.28, 2.78]) were associated with higher odds of self-reported hearing loss. CONCLUSIONS Hearing loss is a highly prevalent public health concern and may be at least partially modifiable via interventions to reduce noise exposure and promote health. Abstract
The link between hearing impairment and air pollution has not been established, and the moderating effect of a healthy diet has never been investigated before. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between air pollution and hearing impairment in British adults aged 37-73 years, and whether the association was modified by a healthy diet. We performed a cross-sectional population-based study with 158,811 participants who provided data from United Kingdom Biobank. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to investigate the link between air pollution and hearing impairment. Subgroup and effect modification analyses were carried out according to healthy diet scores, gender, and age. In the fully adjusted model, we found that exposure to PM10, NOX, and NO2 was associated with hearing impairment [PM10: odds ratio (OR) = 1.15, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.02-1.30, P = 0.023; NOX: OR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.00-1.03, P = 0.040; NO2: OR = 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.06, P = 0.044], while PM2.5 and PM2.5 absorbance did not show similar associations. We discovered an interactive effect of age and air pollution on hearing impairment, but a healthy diet did not. The findings suggested that exposure to PM10, NOX and NO2 was linked to hearing impairment in British adults, whereas PM2.5 and PM2.5 absorbance did not show similar associations. These may help researchers focus more on the impact of air pollution on hearing impairment and provide a basis for developing effective prevention strategies.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary inflammatory index and objective hearing loss (HL). Materials and Methods A cross-sectional analysis of a nationally representative sample of participants was performed based on data in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2009-2016). HL was defined as pure tone averages >25 dB at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz (low frequency); 3000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 Hz (high frequency) in either ear. The energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) score was calculated for each participant based on two 24-h dietary recalls to assess diet-associated inflammation. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the linear relationship between HL and E-DII score or E-DII quartiles. Restricted cubic spline was applied to identify any non-linear associations of the E-DII score with hearing loss. Subgroup analyses were performed by age and gender to explore the moderating roles of these factors. Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) values were used to select the better-fitted model among linear and non-linear models. Results An inverted-U shaped relationship with low-frequency hearing loss (LFHL) was identified for the E-DII score (P-nonlinear =0.023) after adjustment for potential confounders. But significant linear or nonlinear association between E-DII score and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) was not found. Conclusion E-DII score had inverted-U relationship with LFHL. Both pro-inflammatory diet and anti-inflammatory diet seemed to be associated with a decreased risk of LFHL compared to diet that was neither pro-inflammatory diet nor anti-inflammatory diet.

Abstract
Importance Several studies have examined the association between hearing loss (HL) and physical function, with inconsistent results. Few used pure-tone thresholds and considered possible confounders in the association. Objective To examine the association between hearing loss and impaired lower extremity function, frailty syndrome, and disability in older adults. Design, Setting, and Participants The Seniors-ENRICA-2 is a cohort study that was established in 2015-2017 in Spain. The present study was conducted from December 2015 to June 2017. Data were analyzed from January 2, 2021, to March 10, 2021. This cross-sectional analysis included 1644 community-dwelling individuals aged 65 years or older (range, 66-91 years) of both sexes. Participants had hearing threshold measurements and data on impaired lower extremity function, frailty syndrome, and disability. Exposures Hearing loss defined as pure-tone average greater than 40 dB HL in the better ear for standard frequency (0.5, 1, and 2 kHz), speech frequency (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz), and high frequency (3, 4, and 8 kHz). Main Outcomes and Measures Impaired lower extremity function was defined with the Short Physical Performance Battery; the frailty syndrome was defined as having at least 3 of the 5 criteria, including weakness, slow walking speed, low physical activity, exhaustion, and weight loss; and disability in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) was evaluated with the Lawton and Brody scale. Results Of the 1644 participants, 831 were men (50.5%); mean (SD) age was 73.8 (4.3) years. The prevalence of moderate HL was 13.6% at speech frequency. After adjustment for age, sex, lifestyle, comorbidities, impaired cognition, and social isolation, HL in standard frequency was associated with impaired lower extremity function, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.20 (95% CI, 1.25-3.88); the corresponding estimate for the frailty syndrome was 1.85 (95% CI, 0.98-3.49) and for the IADL disability, was 2.25 (95% CI, 1.29-3.94). When considering speech frequency pure-tone average, HL was also associated with impaired function (OR, 2.59; 95% CI, 1.57-4.28), frailty syndrome (OR, 1.85; 95% CI, 1.06-3.22), and IADL disability (OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.32-3.60). Conclusions and Relevance In this cross-sectional analysis of data from the Seniors-ENRICA-2 cohort study, hearing loss was associated with impaired lower extremity function, frailty syndrome, and IADL disability. It may be useful to examine this association with the mechanisms elucidated in further studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Diet may affect susceptibility of the inner ear to noise and age-related effects that lead to tinnitus and hearing loss. This study used complementary single nutrient and dietary pattern analysis based on statistical grouping of usual dietary intake in a cross-sectional analysis of tinnitus and hearing difficulties in a large population study sample. DESIGN The research was conducted using the UK Biobank resource. Tinnitus was based on report of ringing or buzzing in one or both ears that lasts more than five minutes at a time and is currently experienced at least some of the time. Identification of a hearing problem was based on self-reported difficulties with hearing. Usual dietary intake and dietary patterns (involving statistical grouping of intake to account for how foods are combined in real-life diets) were estimated based on between two and five administrations of the Oxford Web-Q 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire over the course of a year for 34,576 UK adult participants aged 40 to 69. RESULTS In a multivariate model, higher intake of vitamin B12 was associated with reduced odds of tinnitus, while higher intakes of calcium, iron, and fat were associated with increased odds (B12, odds ratio [OR] 0.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.75 to 0.97; Calcium, OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.34; Iron, OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.37; Fat, OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.62, respectively, for quintile 5 versus quintile 1). A dietary pattern characterised by high protein intake was associated with reduced odds of tinnitus (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.82 to 0.99 for quintile 5 versus quintile 1). Higher vitamin D intake was associated with reduced odds of hearing difficulties (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.00 for quintile 5 versus quintile 1), as were dietary patterns high in fruit and vegetables and meat and low in fat (Prudent diet: OR 0.89, 95% CI 0.83 to 0.96; High protein: OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.82 to 0.95; High fat: OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.24, respectively, for quintile 5 versus quintile 1). CONCLUSIONS There were associations between both single nutrients and dietary patterns with tinnitus and hearing difficulties. Although the size of the associations was small, universal exposure for dietary factors indicates that there may be a substantial impact of diet on levels of tinnitus and hearing difficulties in the population. This study showed that dietary factors might be important for hearing health.

Diet Quality and the Risk of Impaired Speech Reception Threshold in Noise: The UK Biobank cohort. Ear Hear 2021; 43:361-369. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have examined the association between several diet quality indexes and risk of hearing loss, based on self-reported information or on audiometry test, with inconsistent results. However, the impact of healthy diets on the capacity to listening in noise, a proxy of disability due to hearing loss, is unknown. This research assessed the prospective association between five diet quality indexes and the speech reception threshold in noise in the UK Biobank study. DESIGN Prospective cohort with 105,592 participants aged ≥40 years. At baseline, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, the alternate Mediterranean Diet score, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, the Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010, and the healthful Plant-Based Diet Index were assessed. Functional auditory capacity was measured with a digit triplet test, and impairment was defined as a speech reception threshold in noise >-3.5 dB in any physical exam during the follow-up. RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 3.2 (SD: 2.1) years, 1704 participants showed impaired speech reception threshold in noise. After adjusting for potential confounders, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) of impairment per 1-SD increase in the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, alternate Mediterranean Diet score, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 and healthful Plant-Based Diet Index scores were, respectively, 0.98 (0.94 to 1.03), 1.01 (0.96 to 1.06), 1.02 (0.97 to 1.07), 1.01 (0.96 to 1.06), and 1.00 (0.96 to 1.05). Results were similar when analyses were restricted to those >60 years, with British ethnicity, without chronic disease, without tinnitus or with optimal cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to a healthy diet did not show an association with the speech reception threshold in noise. More research is needed to identify the impact of individual foods or nutrients on this outcome.

Abstract
Extensive evidence supports the association between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and cognitive decline. It is, however, unknown whether a causal relationship exists between these two, or whether they both result from shared mechanisms. This paper intends to study this relationship through a comprehensive review of MRI findings as well as evidence of cellular alterations. Our review of structural MRI studies demonstrates that ARHL is independently linked to accelerated atrophy of total and regional brain volumes and reduced white matter integrity. Resting-state and task-based fMRI studies on ARHL also show changes in spontaneous neural activity and brain functional connectivity; and alterations in brain areas supporting auditory, language, cognitive, and affective processing independent of age, respectively. Although MRI findings support a causal relationship between ARHL and cognitive decline, the contribution of potential shared mechanisms should also be considered. In this regard, the review of cellular evidence indicates their role as possible common mechanisms underlying both age-related changes in hearing and cognition. Considering existing evidence, no single hypothesis can explain the link between ARHL and cognitive decline, and the contribution of both causal (i.e., the sensory hypothesis) and shared (i.e., the common cause hypothesis) mechanisms is expected.

Abstract
This paper reviews and re-analyses data from published studies on the effects of noise exposure on the progression of hearing loss once noise exposure has ceased, focusing particularly on noise exposure during military service. The data are consistent with the idea that such exposure accelerates the progression of hearing loss at frequencies where the hearing loss is absent or mild at the end of military service (hearing threshold levels (HTLs) up to approximately 50 dB HL), but has no effect on or slows the progression of hearing loss at frequencies where the hearing loss exceeds approximately 50 dB. Acceleration appears to occur over a wide frequency range, including 1 kHz. However, each of the studies reviewed has limitations. There is a need for further longitudinal studies of changes in HTLs over a wide range of frequencies and including individuals with a range of HTLs and ages at the end of military service. Longitudinal studies are also needed to establish whether the progression of hearing loss following the end of exposure to high-level sounds depends on the type of noise exposure (steady broadband factory noises versus impulsive sounds).

Abstract
Hearing loss is a major health challenge that can have severe physical, social, cognitive, economic, and emotional consequences on people's quality of life. Currently, the modifiable factors linked to socioeconomic inequalities in hearing health are poorly understood. Therefore, an online database search (PubMed, Scopus, and Psych) was conducted to identify literature that relates hearing loss to health inequalities as a determinant or health outcome. A total of 53 studies were selected to thematically summarize the existing literature, using a critical interpretive synthesis method, where the subjectivity of the researcher is intimately involved in providing new insights with explanatory power. The evidence provided by the literature can be summarized under four key themes: (a) There might be a vicious cycle between hearing loss and socioeconomic inequalities and lifestyle factors, (b) socioeconomic position may interact with less healthy lifestyles, which are harmful to hearing ability, (c) increasing health literacy could improve the diagnosis and prognosis of hearing loss and prevent the adverse consequences of hearing loss on people's health, and (d) people with hearing loss might be vulnerable to receiving low-quality and less safe health care. This study uses elements from theoretical models of health inequalities to formulate a highly interpretive conceptual model for examining hearing health inequalities. This model depicts the specific mechanisms of hearing health and their evolution over time. There are many modifiable determinants of hearing loss, in several stages across an individual's life span; tackling socioeconomic inequalities throughout the life-course could improve the population's health, maximizing the opportunity for healthy aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hearing loss is the fifth leading cause of disability in the world. Coffee consumption might have a beneficial effect on hearing function because of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of some of its compounds. However, no previous longitudinal study has assessed the association between coffee consumption and the risk of hearing impairment. OBJECTIVE To assess the prospective association between coffee consumption and risk of disabling hearing impairment in middle and older men and women from the UK Biobank study. METHODS Analytical cohort with 36,923 participants (16,142 men and 20,781 women) [mean (SD): 56.6 (7.8) years, 1.6 (1.4) cups/d, and -7.6 (1.3) dB for age, total coffee consumption and speech reception threshold in noise at baseline, respectively]. At baseline, coffee consumption was measured with 3-5 multiple-pass 24-h food records. Hearing function was measured with a digit triplet test, and disabling hearing impairment was defined as a speech reception threshold in noise > -3.5 dB in any physical exam during the follow-up. Analyses were stratified by sex and Cox regression models were used to assess the prospective association proposed. RESULTS Over 10 years of follow-up, 343 men and 345 women developed disabling hearing impairment. Among men, compared with those who consumed <1 cup/d of coffee, those who consumed 1, and ≥2 cups/d had a lower risk of hearing impairment (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval]: 0.72 [0.54-0.97] and 0.72 [0.56-0.92], respectively; P-trend: 0.01). This association was similar for caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, and for filtered and non-filtered coffee, and was stronger in those with obesity (hazard ratio [95% confidence interval] for consumption of ≥2 vs. <1 cups/d: 0.39 [0.21-0.74]). No association was found between coffee and hearing function among women. CONCLUSIONS Coffee consumption was associated with lower risk of disabling hearing impairment in men but not in women. The association appeared to be independent of the coffee type and the preparation method.

Abstract
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a major and increasingly prevalent health problem worldwide, causing disability and social isolation in the people who present it. This impairment is caused by genetic and environmental factors. Nutritional status has been identified as a related risk associated with hearing loss (HL). This scoping review aimed to characterize the links between HL and nutritional status. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Scopus databases were searched up to December 2019. Studies examining the relation between nutrition and dietary habits and HL were included. After screening 3510 citations, 22 publications were selected for inclusion in the current review, all of which were published between 2010 and 2019. Diets rich in saturated fats and cholesterol have deleterious effects on hearing that could be prevented by lower consumption. Conversely, greater consumption of fruit and vegetables, and of polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3) and anti-oxidants in the form of vitamins A, C, and E, prevent the development of ARHL. The current literature suggests a possible association between nutritional status and hearing loss. More studies are needed to better characterize the clinical consequences of this association.

Abstract
Hearing loss becomes increasingly common with age and affects quality of life. Recently, scientists have published articles about the relationship between metabolic disease and hearing loss. Metabolic disease was previously found to be highly related to an increase in alkaline phosphatase. Thus, there may be an indirect relationship between alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and hearing loss. In this paper, we will demonstrate the relationship between ALP and hearing loss. We included 3877 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) participants, who represent the noninstitutionalized civilian population in the United States from age 20 to age 69, and examined the association between ALP and frequency distributions of pure-tone air-condition (PTAC) thresholds. After adjusting for pertinent variables, the subjects who belonged to the higher quartiles of ALP tended to have worse hearing thresholds (pure tone average at high and low frequencies) than the first quartile of ALP (p < 0.001). The results showed a positive correlation between ALP and hearing loss, in both males and females (p < 0.001) and in subjects whose body mass indices (BMI) were less than 30 (p < 0.001). In conclusion, ALP may play a role in detecting hearing loss.

Abstract
We conducted a prospective study of dietary patterns and longitudinal change in audiometric hearing thresholds among 3,135 women (mean age = 59 years) in the Nurses' Health Study II (2012-2018). Diet adherence scores for the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Alternate Mediterranean (AMED) diets and the Alternate Healthy Eating Index 2010 (AHEI-2010) were calculated using validated food-frequency questionnaires. Baseline and 3-year follow-up hearing sensitivities were assessed by pure-tone audiometry at 19 US sites. We used multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models to examine independent associations between diet adherence scores and risk of ≥5 dB elevation in the pure-tone average (PTA) of low-frequency (LPTA0.5,1,2 kHz), mid-frequency (MPTA3,4 kHz), and high-frequency (HPTA6,8 kHz) hearing thresholds. Higher adherence scores were associated with lower risk of hearing loss. Compared with the lowest quintile of DASH score, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios for mid-frequency and high-frequency threshold elevation in the highest quintile were 0.71 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.55, 0.92; P for trend = 0.003) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.59, 0.96; P for trend = 0.02); for AMED and AHEI scores, for mid-frequency threshold elevation, they were 0.77 (95% CI: 0.60, 0.99; P for trend = 0.02) and 0.72 (95% CI: 0.57, 0.92; P for trend = 0.002). Nonsignificant inverse associations were observed for high-frequency threshold elevation. There were no significant associations between adherence scores and low-frequency threshold elevation. Our findings indicate that eating a healthy diet might reduce the risk of acquired hearing loss.

Abstract
High levels of albuminuria have been demonstrated to associate with hearing loss in non-diabetic people, while the clinical impact of low-grade albuminuria has attracted less attention. This cross-sectional population-based study aimed to examine whether hearing loss in non-diabetic United States (US) adults is independently associated with low-grade albuminuria or reduced estimated glomeruli filtration rate (eGFR).A total of 2518 participants aged 20 to 69 years were selected from the US National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey database. Participants with diabetes or high-grade albuminuria were excluded. Hearing loss was assessed using low-frequency pure-tone average (LFPTA) thresholds (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 kHz) and high-frequency pure-tone average (HFPTA) thresholds (3.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 kHz). Logistic and linear regression analyses were used to evaluate associations between renal function indicators and hearing loss.The median age of included participants was 37.4 years, and 55% of them were female. Multivariate analysis revealed that participants with urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in the highest tertile had a significantly higher risk of hearing loss (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.01-3.19) and higher HFPTA thresholds (β: 2.23; SE: 0.77). Participants with eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m had higher LFPTA thresholds (β: 4.31; SE: 1.79). After stratification by sex, a significant risk remained only for males in the highest UACR tertile, with 2.18 times the risk of hearing loss (95% CI, 1.06-4.48).Non-diabetic US males with low-grade albuminuria are at increased risk of hearing loss, independent of eGFR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the relationships among the overall cardiovascular health scoring tool, Life's Simple 7 (LS7), and hearing in an African-American cardiovascular study cohort. METHODS Using the Jackson Heart Study's cohort of African Americans, the relationships between the LS7 scoring metric and hearing of 1314 individuals were assessed. Standard audiometric data was collected and hearing loss was defined as a four-frequency average of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz greater than 25 dBHL (PTA4). Measures of reported tinnitus and dizziness were also collected. The LS7 scoring tool, which consists of seven individual categories (abstinence from smoking, body mass index, physical activity, healthy diet, total cholesterol <200 mg/dL, normotension, and absence of diabetes mellitus), was used as measure of overall cardiovascular health. Each category of the LS7 was broken down into poor, intermediate, and ideal subgroups as in accordance with the American Heart Association Strategic Planning Task Force and Statistics Committee. Unadjusted and adjusted gamma regression and logistic regression models were constructed for determining relationships between LS7 and hearing loss. RESULTS Higher total LS7 scores (per 1-unit increase) were associated with lower PTA4 in gamma regression analyses (RR = 0.942, 95% CI, 0.926-0.958, P < .001). This held true even after adjustments for age, sex, education, and history of noise exposure. Using logistic regression analyses to compare LS7 scores to presence of hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo; only hearing loss showed a statically significant relationship after adjustments for age, sex, education, and history of noise exposure. CONCLUSIONS This study shows a significant, graded association between higher life's simple seven scores and lower incidence of hearing loss. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 2b. Laryngoscope, 2019.

Abstract
The influence of dietary nutrient intake on the onset and trajectory of hearing loss during aging and in mediating protection from challenges such as noise is an important relationship yet to be fully appreciated. Dietary intake provides essential nutrients that support basic cellular processes related to influencing cellular stress response, immune response, cardiometabolic status, neural status, and psychological well-being. Dietary quality has been shown to alter risk for essentially all chronic health conditions including hearing loss and tinnitus. Evidence of nutrients with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-ischemic properties, and overall healthy diet quality as otoprotective strategies are slowly accumulating, but many questions remain unanswered. In this article, the authors will discuss (1) animal models in nutritional research, (2) evidence of dietary nutrient-based otoprotection, and (3) consideration of confounds and limitations to nutrient and dietary study in hearing sciences. Given that there are some 60 physiologically essential nutrients, unraveling the intricate biochemistry and multitude of interactions among nutrients may ultimately prove infeasible; however, the wealth of available data suggesting healthy nutrient intake to be associated with improved hearing outcomes suggests the development of evidence-based guidance regarding diets that support healthy hearing may not require precise understanding of all possible interactions among variables. Clinical trials evaluating otoprotective benefits of nutrients should account for dietary quality, noise exposure history, and exercise habits as potential covariates that may influence the efficacy and effectiveness of test agents; pharmacokinetic measures are also encouraged.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the associations between overall diet quality and hearing function among middle-older aged adults in the USA. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis. Diet quality was examined using the Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS), using data from a single 24 h dietary recall. Hearing function was objectively measured by audiometry assessments and hearing loss, including high- and low-frequency hearing loss, was defined as pure-tone averages at specific ranges of hearing frequencies >25 dB. Weighted logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associations of MDS (scored 0-9, categorized at the median as ≤3 or >3) with hearing loss and high- and low-frequency hearing loss. SETTING National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2000-2006 and 2009-2012. PARTICIPANTS Adults aged ≥50 years (n 1639) with valid dietary and audiometry assessments. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, a non-significant trend for a protective association of higher MDS was observed for hearing loss (OR = 0·78; 95 % CI 0·49, 1·23). A significant inverse association was observed for high-frequency hearing loss (OR = 0·64; 95 % CI 0·43, 0·95). No association was found for low-frequency hearing loss among women; however, higher MDS was significantly associated with higher odds of low-frequency hearing loss among men (OR = 2·63; 95 % CI 1·39, 4·95). CONCLUSIONS Among middle-older aged adults, adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet was inversely associated with hearing loss, including those at high hearing frequencies, among older adults. However, a detrimental association was observed at low hearing frequencies among men. Future investigations with a longitudinal design are needed to clarify the associations between diet quality and hearing loss.

Abstract
There is an urgent need for otoprotective drug agents. Prevention of noise-induced hearing loss continues to be a major challenge for military personnel and workers in a variety of industries despite the requirements that at-risk individuals use hearing protection devices such as ear plugs or ear muffs. Drug-induced hearing loss is also a major quality-of-life issue with many patients experiencing clinically significant hearing loss as a side effect of treatment with life-saving drug agents such as cisplatin and aminoglycoside antibiotics. There are no pharmaceutical agents approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the purpose of protecting the inner ear against damage, and preventing associated hearing loss (otoprotection). However, a variety of preclinical studies have suggested promise, with some supporting data from clinical trials now being available as well. Additional research within this promising area is urgently needed.

Abstract
Because age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is irreversible, prevention is very important. Thus, investigating modifying factors that help prevent ARHL is critical for the elderly. Nutritional status or nutritional factors for the elderly are known to be associated with many problems related to aging. Emerging studies suggest that there was the interaction between nutrition and ARHL. We aimed to investigate the possible impact of dietary nutrients on ARHL using data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) which included 4742 subjects aged ≥ 65 years from 2010 to 2012. All participants underwent an otologic examination, audiologic evaluation, and nutritional survey. The associations between ARHL and nutrient intake were analyzed using simple and multiple regression models with complex sampling adjusted for confounding factors, such as BMI, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and history of hypertension and diabetes. Higher intake groups of riboflavin, niacin and retinol was inversely associated with ARHL prevalence (riboflavin aOR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.54-0.94; p = 0.016, niacin aOR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.54-0.96; p = 0.025, retinol aOR 0.66; 95% CI, 0.51-0.86; p = 0.002, respectively). Our findings suggest the recommended intake levels of riboflavin, niacin, and retinol may help reduce ARHL in the elderly.

Abstract
Hearing loss (HL) is a major public health problem. Nutritional factors can affect a variety of diseases, such as HL, in humans. Thus far, several studies have evaluated the association between nutrition and hearing. These studies found that the incidence of HL was increased with the lack of single micro-nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C, D and E, and zinc, magnesium, selenium, iron and iodine. Higher carbohydrate, fat, and cholesterol intake, or lower protein intake, by individuals corresponded to poorer hearing status. However, higher consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids corresponded to better hearing status of studied subjects. In addition to malnutrition, obesity was reported as a risk factor for HL. In studies of the relationship between middle ear infection and nutrition in children, it was reported that lack of vitamins A, C and E, and zinc and iron, resulted in poorer healing status due to vulnerability to infection. These studies indicate that various nutritional factors can affect hearing. Therefore, considering that multifactorial nutritional causes are responsible, in part, for HL, provision of proper guidelines for maintaining a proper nutritional status is expected to prevent some of the causes and burden of HL.

Abstract
The association between dietary patterns (DP) and prevalence of hearing loss in men enrolled in the Caerphilly Prospective Study was investigated. During 1979-1983, the study recruited 2512 men aged 45-59 years. At baseline, dietary data were collected using a semi-quantitative FFQ, and a 7-d weighed food intake (WI) in a 30 % subsample. Five years later, pure-tone unaided audiometric threshold was assessed at 0·5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified three DP and multiple logistic and ordinal logistic regression models examined the association with hearing loss (defined as pure-tone average of frequencies 0·5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz >25 dB). Traditional, healthy and high-sugar/low-alcohol DP were found with both FFQ and WI data. With the FFQ data, fully adjusted models demonstrated significant inverse association between the healthy DP and hearing loss both as a dichotomous variable (OR=0·83; 95 % CI 0·77, 0·90; P<0·001) and as an ordinal variable (OR=0·87; 95 % CI 0·81, 0·94; P<0·001). With the WI data, fully adjusted models showed a significant and inverse association between the healthy DP and hearing loss (OR=0·85; 95 % CI 0·73, 0·99; P<0·03), and a significant association between the traditional DP (per fifth increase) and hearing loss both as a dichotomous variable (OR=1·18; 95 % CI 1·02, 1·35; P=0·02) and as an ordinal variable (OR=1·17; 95 % CI 1·03, 1·33; P=0·02). A healthy DP was significantly and inversely associated with hearing loss in older men. The role of diet in age-related hearing loss warrants further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the aging population, the prevalence of age-related hearing loss will increase substantially. Prevention requires more knowledge on modifiable risk factors. Obesity and diet quality have been suggested to play a role in the etiology of age-related hearing loss. We aimed to investigate independent associations of body composition and diet quality with age-related hearing loss. METHODS We performed cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses (follow-up: 4.4 years) in the population-based Rotterdam Study. At baseline (2006-2014), 2,906 participants underwent assessment of body composition, diet, and hearing. Of these 2,906 participants, 636 had hearing assessment at follow-up (2014-2016). Association of body composition and of diet quality with hearing loss were examined using multivariable linear regression models. RESULTS Cross-sectionally, higher body mass index and fat mass index were associated with increased hearing thresholds. These associations did not remain statistically significant at follow-up. We found no associations between overall diet quality and hearing thresholds. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that a higher body mass index, and in particular a higher fat mass index, is related to age-related hearing loss. However, whether maintaining a healthy body composition may actually reduce the effects of age-related hearing loss in the aging population requires further longitudinal population-based research.

Abstract
Hearing loss has been recently ranked as the fifth leading cause of years lived with disability, ahead of many other chronic diseases such as diabetes, dementia, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Moreover, according to the World Health Organization, moderate-to-profound hearing loss affects about 466 million people worldwide. Its incidence varies in each population segment, affecting approximately 10% of children and increasing to 30% of the population over 65 years. However, hearing loss receives still very limited research funding and public awareness. This sensory impairment is caused by genetic and environmental factors, and among the latter, the nutritional status has acquired relevance due its association to hearing loss detected in recent epidemiological studies. Several experimental models have proved that the onset and progression of hearing loss are closely linked to the availability of nutrients and their metabolism. Here, we have reviewed studies focused on nutrient effects on auditory function. These studies support the potential of nutritional therapy for the protection against hearing loss progression, which is especially relevant to the aging process and related quality of life.

Abstract
Objectives There is limited research in population-based studies on auditory processing. The purpose of this work is to determine the prevalence of auditory processing impairment in the Jackson Heart Study cohort and to identify potential relationships with cardiometabolic risk factors. Study Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Jackson Heart Study in Jackson, Mississippi. Subjects Participants of an all–African American cardiovascular study cohort (n = 1314). Methods The Quick Speech-in-Noise and Dichotic Digits, Double Pairs tests were used to assess auditory processing. Logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine how participants’ cardiometabolic risk factors and audiologic characteristics were associated with speech perception in noise and binaural integration. Results Quick Speech-in-Noise and Dichotic Digits, Double Pairs testing showed a prevalence of auditory processing impairment in 69% and 71% of the cohort, respectively, which was significantly related to age, hearing thresholds, sex, and education level. With covariate adjustment in statistical models for age, sex, pure tone average, and education level, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, and hypertension were statistically predictive of auditory processing impairment ( P < .05). Conclusion The results suggest a high prevalence of auditory processing deficits in the Jackson Heart Study cohort. In addition, cardiometabolic and audiologic factors show a statistically significant independent relationship with auditory impairment measures.

Abstract
Background Specific nutrients have been associated with hearing status, but associations between healthful dietary patterns and risk of hearing loss have not been prospectively evaluated. Objective We sought to prospectively examine the relations between adherence to the Alternate Mediterranean diet (AMED), the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010), and risk of hearing loss. Methods We conducted a longitudinal cohort study (1991-2013) of 81,818 women in the Nurses' Health Study II, aged 27-44 y at baseline. We assessed diet every 4 y with the use of food frequency questionnaires and calculated AMED, DASH, and AHEI-2010 adherence scores. Baseline and updated information from validated biennial questionnaires was used in Cox proportional hazards regression models to examine independent associations between adherence scores and risk of self-reported moderate or worse hearing loss. Results During >1 million person-years of follow-up, 2306 cases of moderate or worse hearing loss were reported. Higher cumulative average AMED and DASH scores were significantly inversely associated with risk of hearing loss. For women with scores in the highest compared with the lowest quintile, the multivariable-adjusted relative risks (MVRRs) of hearing loss were 0.70 (95% CI: 0.60, 0.82) (P-trend <0.001) for AMED and 0.71 (95% CI: 0.61, 0.83) (P-trend <0.001) for DASH. Higher recent AHEI-2010 score was also associated with lower risk [MVRR = 0.79 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.91); P-trend <0.001]. Among participants with additional hearing-related information (n = 33,102), higher cumulative average adherence scores for all 3 dietary patterns were associated with lower risk; the MVRR was 0.63 (95% CI: 0.49, 0.81) for AMED, 0.64 (95% CI: 0.50, 0.83) for DASH, and 0.71 (95% CI: 0.56, 0.89) for AHEI-2010. Conclusion Adherence to healthful dietary patterns is associated with lower risk of hearing loss in women. Consuming a healthy diet may be helpful in reducing the risk of acquired hearing loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Studies based on food frequency questionnaires suggest that folate and vitamin B12 intake could protect against hearing loss. We investigated whether erythrocyte folate and serum vitamin B12 levels are independently associated with hearing loss in humans. SUBJECTS/METHODS Participants in the 2003-2004 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who had data on hearing, folate, and vitamin B12 levels were included. Pure-tone average (PTA) at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 kHz was computed for each ear. We used weighted logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the relation between quartiles of folate and vitamin B12, and hearing loss (present if PTA > 25 dB in either ear and absent if PTA ≤ 25 dB in both ears). RESULTS Participants (n = 1149) were 20-69 (mean 42) years old and 16.4% had hearing loss in at least one ear. Our data suggest a U-shaped relationship between folate and hearing loss. Compared to the 1st quartile, the ORs (95% CIs) for hearing loss were 0.87 (0.49-1.53), 0.70 (0.49-1.00), and 1.08 (0.61-1.94) for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartile of erythrocyte folate in analyses adjusted for age, sex, vitamin B12, smoking, alcohol use, body mass index, race/ethnicity, exposure to noise, income, and education. Although we observed inverse associations between vitamin B12 and hearing loss, the associations were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our data show a U-shaped relationship between erythrocyte folate levels and hearing loss, suggesting a need to evaluate whether optimizing blood folate levels could prevent hearing loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to present a new tool that can be used in the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. Even in most countries where noise levels are well regulated, many workers are still exposed to high levels of noise and suffer from permanent threshold shifts. It is necessary to develop a new strategy to prevent such damage. METHOD A statistical process control (SPC) scheme is presented that is able to detect both large and small hearing threshold shifts. Monte Carlo simulations were used to assess the performance of this hearing monitoring scheme. Different hearing threshold shifts were simulated to evaluate the performance of a variety of hearing development scenarios. RESULTS It is possible to detect hearing threshold shifts smaller than the standard deviation of the hearing tests performed. This means that permanent hearing threshold shifts smaller than 5 dB can be detected and acted on. Outliers can also be automatically detected and treated, increasing the robustness of the monitoring scheme. CONCLUSION The proposed statistical framework can be used as an early warning indicator of noise-induced hearing loss with the aim of improving workers' safety. Individual counteractions can be implemented, reducing the risk of further damage.

Abstract
Sensory impairments, mainly of vision and hearing, are prevalent among the older adults, and are the leading causes of disability in people aged 60 years and above around the world. However, epidemiological data on sensory impairments (prevalence, association with adverse health outcomes, risk and preventive factors, etc.) in community-dwelling older people are sparse in Japan. Using data from the Kurabuchi Study, a community-based prospective cohort study of adults aged 65 years or older, the author and colleagues estimated the prevalence of sensory impairments in this population. Vision and hearing impairments were associated with adverse health outcomes, such as depressive symptoms, dependence in activities of daily living, and early death. In addition, antioxidants, sunlight exposure, hyperglycaemia, and nutritional status were identified as possible risk or preventive factors for vision and/or hearing impairments. Further research is needed into whether the maintenance or improvement of sensory functions contributes to the extension of disability-free life expectancy.

Abstract
This study examined potential prevention of music-induced temporary threshold shift (TTS) in normal-hearing participants. A dietary supplement composed of β-carotene, vitamins C and E, and magnesium was assessed using a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study design. Dosing began 3 days prior to the music exposure with the final dose consumed approximately 30-min pre-exposure. There were no group differences in post-exposure TTS or music-induced decreases in distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) amplitude. Transient tinnitus was more likely to be reported by the treatment group, but there were no group differences in perceived loudness or bothersomeness. All subjects were monitored until auditory function returned to pre-exposure levels. Taken together, this supplement had no effect on noise-induced changes in hearing. Recommendations for future clinical trials are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association between four markers of overall nutritional status (a serum biomarker (albumin) and three anthropometric indices (body mass index (BMI), midarm circumference (MAC), calf circumference (CC))) and incident hearing impairment in older Japanese adults. DESIGN Community-based prospective cohort study. SETTING Kurabuchi Town, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. PARTICIPANTS Individuals aged 65 and older (143 men, 195 women) without hearing impairment at baseline examination (2005-06) who participated in repeated examinations 4 years later (2009-10) (N = 338). MEASUREMENTS The three anthropometric indices were measured at baseline, and nephelometry was used to assess serum albumin levels. Hearing impairment was defined as failure to hear a 30-dB hearing level signal at 1 kHz and a 40-dB signal at 4 kHz in the better ear on pure-tone audiometry. RESULTS Over the 4-year period, 16.3% of participants developed hearing impairment. Those with lower marker values had greater risk of hearing impairment than those with higher marker values (multivariable adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 2.18, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05-4.57 for albumin ≤4.0 g/dL; aOR = 2.72, 95% CI = 1.10-6.71 for BMI <19.0 kg/m(2) ). The pattern of association showed a similar tendency for MAC and CC. Excluding obese participants did not changed the results substantially. CONCLUSION Further research is needed to determine whether interventions that improve markers of nutritional status may help prevent age-related hearing loss in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dietary carotenoids lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Z) have been linked to improved visual and cognitive function. These effects are thought to be mediated by the presence of these pigments in critical regions of the retina and brain. There, it has been postulated that L and Z mediate improved performance by enhancing neural efficiency. The auditory system also relies on efficient segregating of signals and noise and LZ are also found in the auditory cortex. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of LZ status (as assessed by the measuring levels in retina) on auditory thresholds in young non-smokers (N = 32, M = 20.72 ± 3.28 years). DESIGN LZ status was determined by measuring macular pigment (MP) optical density using a standardized psychophysical technique (customized heterochromatic flicker photometry). Auditory thresholds were assessed with puretone thresholds and puretone auditory thresholds in white noise. RESULTS MP density was related to many, but not all, of the puretone thresholds we tested: 250 Hz (F(6,32) = 4.36, P < 0.01), 500 Hz (F(6,32) = 2.25, P < 0.05), 1000 Hz (F(6,32) = 3.22, P < 0.05), and 6000 Hz (F(6,32) = 2.56, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The overall pattern of results is consistent with a role for L and Z in maintaining optimal auditory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present paper was to examine the association between prospectively and cross-sectionally assessed cardiovascular risk factors and hearing loss. DESIGN Hearing was assessed by pure-tone average thresholds at low (0.25-0.5 kHz), middle (1-2 kHz), and high (3-8 kHz) frequencies. Self-reported or measured cardiovascular risk factors were assessed both 11 years before and simultaneously with the audiometric assessment. Cardiovascular risk factors were smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity, waist circumference, body mass index, resting heart rate, blood pressure, triglycerides, total serum cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and diabetes. STUDY SAMPLE A population-based cohort of 31 547 subjects. RESULTS After adjustment for age, sex, level of education, income, recurrent ear infections, and noise exposure, risk factors associated with poorer hearing sensitivity were smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity, resting heart rate, and waist circumference. Smoking was only associated with hearing loss at high frequencies. The effects were very small, in combination explaining only 0.2-0.4% of the variance in addition to the component explained by age and the other cofactors. CONCLUSION This cohort study indicates that, although many cardiovascular risk factors are associated with hearing loss, the effects are small and of doubtful clinical relevance.

Abstract
Age-related hearing impairment (ARHI) is a common condition with complex etiology but a recognized genetic component. Heritability estimates for pure tone audiogram-determined hearing ability lie in the range 26–75%. The speech-in-noise (SIN) auditory test, however, may be better at encapsulating ARHI symptoms, particularly the diminished ability to segregate environmental sounds into comprehendible auditory streams. As heritability of SIN has not previously been reported, we explored the genetic and environmental contributions to ARHI determined by SIN in 2,076 twins (87.8% female) aged 18–87 (mean age 54.4). SIN was found to be significantly heritable (A, unadjusted for age = 40%; 95% confidence intervals, CI = 32%–47%). With age adjustment, heritability fell (A= 25%; 95% CI = 16–33%), and a relatively strong influence of environmental exposure unshared within twin siblings was identified (E= 75%). To explore the environmental aspects further, we assessed the influence of diet (through the Food Frequency Questionnaire, FFQ), smoking (through self-report and cotinine metabolite levels) and alcohol intake (through the FFQ). A negative influence of high cholesterol diet was observed after adjustment (p= .037). A protective effect of raised serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels was observed after adjustment (p= .004). This study is the first assessment of the genetic and environmental influence on SIN perception. The findings suggest SIN is less heritable than pure tone audiogram (PTA) ability and highly influenced by the environment unique to each twin. Furthermore, a possible role of dietary fat in the etiology of ARHI is highlighted.
