Abstract
The present study is the first report that evaluates effects of nutritional effects of flushing with differing diet crude protein ratios on blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, related some reproductive parameters and embryo quality in ewe. During mating season, before synchronization protocol ewes were fed on alfalfa hay and additive concentrate feeding as flushing. Intra vaginal FGA containing sponges applied for 12 days for the purpose of synchronization and pFSH was administered by 8 declining doses for the purpose of superovulation. Uterus was flushed in the morning of the seventh day of mating and embryos were collected surgically. Collected embryos were qualified according to IETS criterion. There is no dependency found between BUN values measured at different days and at different diet crude protein concentrations. An increase in uterine pH levels due to increasing protein amounts was observed but this increase was not significant among groups. Ovarian function was evaluated by ovarian responses (CL + large follicle) showed difference between groups (p < 0.05) and the lowest protein intake group gave highest ovarian response. In addition, embryo recovery rates revealed difference between groups (p < 0.05) and it was observed that the lowest ovarian response group showed the highest rates of embryo recovery. It is concluded that, in some Anatolian native sheep breeds, the application of diet flushing with different crude protein concentrates influence ovarian responses and embryo recovery rates but has no effect on BUN levels; uterus physiology or embryonic quality.

Abstract
AbstractSeasonal milk production systems rely on heavy inputs of nitrogenous fertilizer, which typically generate pastures with a high crude protein (CP) and low fermentable energy concentration. High intake of CP, particularly in association with low rumen fermentable energy, increases systemic ammonia and urea and has been associated with reduced fertility in cattle. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between pasture protein intake and fermentable energy supplementation on a range of blood metabolites and on embryo survival and development in cattle.Oestrous synchronized, nulliparous beef heifers (no. = 175) were randomly assigned to one of four pasture-based dietary treatments in a 2✕2 factorial study carried out over 2 years. Animals were randomly allocated to either high (85 kg nitrogen (N) per ha; HN) or low (0·0 kg N per ha; LN) N fertilized pastures and within pasture treatment were randomly allocated to receive either zero or three (+3P) kg dry matter (DM) of molassed sugar-beet pulp (MSBP) per head per day as follows: (1) HN (no. = 44), (2) HN + 3P, (no. = 43), (3) LN (no. = 44), (4) LN + 3P (no. = 44). Blood samples were collected to measure systemic concentrations of ammonia, urea, insulin, glucose and progesterone. Heifers were artificially inseminated (AI) and pregnancy diagnosis was carried out by ultrasonography 30 days after AI. Subgroups of pregnant animals across treatments were slaughtered 40 days after AI to estimate conceptus development.The HN pasture had a higher CP (P< 0·001) and lower water-soluble carbohydrate (P< 0·01) concentration. Plasma concentrations of ammonia (P< 0·05) and urea (P< 0·001) were higher in the animals on the HN pastures and were reduced (P< 0·05) by MSBP supplementation, but only in animals on the HN pastures. Embryo survival rate across treatments was high overall (71%) and not related to pasture CP concentration, fermentable energy supplementation or systemic concentrations of ammonia, urea, glucose or insulin. There was no relationship between dietary treatment or systemic metabolites and any of the estimates of conceptus development. Systemic insulin was not affected by pasture N treatment or MSBP supplementation (P> 0·05). Systemic concentrations of glucose were not affected by pasture N treatment (P> 0·05) but were increased by MSBP supplementation (P< 0·05). Systemic progesterone was not affected by pasture CP or MSBP supplementation (P> 0·05) but at day 7 after AI was positively related (P< 0·05) to embryo survival. Intake of high CP herbage elevated systemic ammonia and urea but there was no association with embryo survival rate or embryo development in heifers.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine feeding factors connected with differences in the fertility of Israeli Kibbutz dairy herds. In an epidemiological case-control survey, data from 30, low-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 35% in multiparous cows were compared with the data from 30, high-fertility Kibbutz dairy herds having a mean overall conception rate of 48% in multiparous cows. Nutritional factors accounted for 67% of the differences between low-fertility and high-fertility herds in the overall conception rate of multiparous cows, while only 4.8% could be related to the body condition during the dry period. Among the factors which occurred more frequently in the low-fertility than in the high-fertility herds were 1) a higher average protein density and lower energy/protein ratio was fed during lactation and 2) a single feeding group was maintained for all lactating cows. 3) There were phytoestrogens in the silage or alfalfa hay, fed during lactation. 4) Faulty dry period was instituted, which was defined as the presence of at least one of the following three practices: a) the daily feed was above 3 kg of high lactation mix; b) more than 15 Mcal of net energy per day was given during the first part of the dry period; c) more than 30% of the cows were obese during the dry period. Three or more risk factors were found in one high-fertility herd and in 20 low-fertility herds. This finding emphasizes the importance of identifying and removing risk factors as a possible means for improving the reproductive performance of herds.

Abstract
The aim of this field study was to investigate the relationship of plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) with the pregnancy rate in lactating Awassi × Merino ewes. One hundred and eighty-five Awassi × Merino ewes were used in the present study. Ewes were fed a diet containing 17.4% crude protein and were milked twice a day by the milking machine. The ewes were synchronized for estrus by insertion of intravaginal sponges containing 30 mg flurogestone acetate for 14 days. At the time of sponge removal each ewe was administered eCG (600 IU). All ewes were inseminated twice with fresh semen into the external os of the cervix at 48 and 56 h after sponge removal. The day of insemination was considered as Day 0 for calculating the gestational period. Blood samples were collected from each ewe at Days 0, 18 for measurement of PUN concentrations and at Day 22 after AI for measurement of pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Thirty-eight ewes (20.5%) were confirmed pregnant by PAG-RIA test at Day 22 and by ultrasonography at Day 80. The mean (±S.D.) concentration of PUN in all ewes at Day 0 was 12.7±4.6 mmol/L. There were non-significant differences in the level of PUN between pregnant and non-pregnant ewes at Days 0 (12.2±4.2 mmol/L vs. 12.8±4.7 mmol/L, respectively) and 18 (9.6±2.9 mmol/L vs. 10.4±4.0 mmol/L, respectively) after AI. Mean PUN concentrations decreased significantly from Day 0 to Day 18 after AI in both pregnant and non-pregnant ewes. By using logistic regression analysis, there was no effect of PUN concentrations on the probability of pregnancy occurrence in the studied ewes (odds ratio: 0.97; 95% confidence interval: 0.9-1.05; P=0.45). In conclusion, there was no evidence of a relationship between PUN concentration and pregnancy rate for lactating Awassi × Merino ewes in the present study because of low pregnancy rate observed.

Abstract
The objectives were to examine the effect of high dietary crude protein on characteristics of preovulatory follicles in dairy heifers. Eight Israeli-Holstein heifers, 4 fitted with rumen fistula and 4 intact, were assigned to 1 of 3 treatments in a replicated (n=2) 4 × 3 incomplete Latin square design with 39-d periods. Treatments were: low (6.0%; LP), moderate (13.0%; MP), and high (20.0%; HP) crude-protein diets, containing 1.27 Mcal NE(L)/kg dry matter. Diets were based on approximately 66% wheat straw and various proportions of ground corn grain and soybean meal. The estrous cycles of the heifers were synchronized, and 14 d after behavioral estrus, heifers received PGF(2 α) injections. After a further 40 h, at d 39 of each period, follicular fluid (FF) was aspirated from follicles of diameter >7 mm. The intake of the LP diet was 9% lower than that of MP and HP diets. Rumen ammonia and plasma urea nitrogen concentrations were highest in the HP and lowest in the LP, with intermediate levels in MP diets. No differences were found between treatments in plasma and FF concentrations of glucose and nonesterified fatty acids. High-protein diets increased urea concentrations very similarly in preovulatory FF and in plasma. No differences were observed between diets, in preovulatory follicle diameters and concentrations of androstenedione. However, higher estradiol and progesterone concentrations in FF were observed under the HP than under the MP diet, with no difference between diets in estrogen to progesterone ratio. It can be concluded that high concentrations of urea in plasma, caused by high dietary crude protein, penetrated into preovulatory follicles, but did not impair preovulatory characteristics. This lack of detrimental effects might be attributed to the use in this study of nonlactating heifers, which have fewer nutritional and physiological constraints and eliminate negative effects of potential interactions with high urea on dairy cows' reproductive systems.

Abstract
ABSTRACTNinety primiparous and 150 multiparous Israeli-Holstein dairy cows were allotted at random into three groups. One group (LSBM) was given 170 g crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter (DM). The two other groups were given 210 g CP per kg DM with the extra 40 g CP per kg DM supplied either by soya-bean meal (HSBM) or by fish meal (HFM). Roughage supplied proportionately 0·20 of the dietary DM and was maize silage with groundnut hay in the winter and wheat silage with oat grass in the summer. The primiparous and multiparous cows were offered the experimental diets for 16 and 24 weeks, respectively.Milk, milk fat and milk protein production (kg/day), for treatments LSBM, HSBM and HFM, were: 39·3, 40·0, 40·8 (P > 0·05); 1·12, 118, 1·06 (P < 0·05) and 1·21, 1·23, 1·26 (P > 0·05) for multiparous cows and 29·4, 31·2, 33·4 (P < 0·05); 0·89, 1·07, 0·93 (P < 0·01) and 0·92, 0·98, 1·05 (P < 0·05) for primiparous cows, respectively. Cows of high yield potential responded more to increasing dietary protein level than did cows of low yield potential. Average live-weight gains on treatments LSBM, HSBM and HFM were (g/day): 220, 160 and 310 (P < 0·05) in multiparous cows and 220, 170 and 230 (P < 0·05) i n primiparous cows, respectively. Pregnancy rates, 16 weeks after parturition, were 0·65, 0·52 and 0·72 (P < 0·05), in the LSBM, HSBM and HFM groups, respectively. The decrease in pregnancy rate in the HSBM cows, occurred in primiparous cows and cows in their fourth or later lactation but not in cows in their second or third lactation. The milk production of primiparous and multiparous cows in relation to the level and source of dietary CP and the utilization of energy and protein for milk production is discussed.

Abstract
The objective of this article was to review and summarize the significance of the amount and source of dietary crude protein supplements on the supply of nitrogen fractions passing to the small intestine and the performance of lactating dairy cows. A meta-analysis was used to evaluate 2 data sets, one for nitrogen flow to the small intestine and one for performance of cows. The response of dairy cows to rumen-undegradable protein supplements is variable. A portion of this variable response from research trials is explained by the source of crude protein in the control diet, the proportion and source of rumen-undegradable protein in the experimental diet, the effect of rumen-undegradable protein on microbial protein outflow from the rumen, the degradability and amino acid content of the rumen-undegradable protein, and the crude protein percentage of the diet. Compared with soybean meal, the mean milk production responses to feeding rumen-undegradable protein supplements ranged from -2.5 to +2.75%. Because of the large variation and small magnitude of response when rumen-undegradable protein supplements are fed compared with soybean meal, efficiency of nitrogen utilization and the cost to benefit ratio for these crude protein supplements may determine the source and amount of crude protein to feed to dairy cows in the future.

Abstract
Previous research indicates that high plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) concentrations are associated with decreased fertility in lactating dairy cows. The objective of this study was to monitor changes in the uterine environment during acute elevation of PUN. Lactating dairy cows (n = 8) were infused with saline or urea (0.01 g of urea/h per kg of body weight) through jugular vein catheters on d 7 after estrus. After 24 h, cows were switched to the opposite treatment for a second 24-h infusion period. Blood samples were collected every 2 h, and the pH within the lumen of the uterine horn ipsilateral to the corpus luteum was recorded every 6 h. At the end of each 24-h infusion period, 30 mL of sterile saline was flushed into the uterine lumen and immediately retrieved. Mean PUN concentration increased from 16.6 +/- 1.3 mg/dL during saline infusion to 22.6 +/- 1.3 mg/dL during urea infusion. Uterine pH decreased during urea infusion from 7.08 +/- 0.07 at 6 h to 6.88 +/- 0.08 at 18 h, but was unchanged during saline infusion (7.01 +/- 0.08 at 6 h to 7.06 +/- 0.07 at 18 h). Protein concentration, PGF(2alpha), and prostaglandin E(2) concentrations in uterine lavage samples were not different between treatments. The results of this study indicate that a short-term increase in PUN can exert direct effects on the uterine environment by decreasing uterine pH.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to identify and evaluate production and environmental factors that influence milk urea (MU) in Israeli dairy herds, to analyze the relationships between MU concentration and nutritional variables, and to examine a possible association between MU and pregnancy rate (PR). Production and environmental data were obtained from the Israeli Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) Center (n = 1,279,600). Programmed total mixed rations (feeds and quantities) on milk-test day were collected from 42 dairy herds. Data on 36,073 cows that were inseminated close to milk-test day and pregnancy diagnosis results were obtained from the DHI data bank. Highly significant positive relationships were found between MU concentration and milk yield and fat percentage; relationships between MU and milk total protein percentage and somatic cell count were negative. Milk urea levels were higher during the summer months and were higher for adult cows. These levels increased as lactation progressed. Milk urea was positively associated with dietary levels of crude protein, ruminal digestible protein, and neutral detergent fiber contents; it was negatively associated with ration energy and nonstructural carbohydrate contents. Significant influences of specific feeds on MU were detected. A significant negative association was found between MU level and PR. Least squares means for PR for cows in the lowest and highest MU quartiles were 38.4 and 36.1%, respectively. Increasing levels of MU were negatively related to reproductive performance of dairy cows, but the risk of nonpregnancy caused by high levels of MU was lower than reported in previous studies.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of an excess intake of quickly degradable nitrogen (QDN) on metabolic and reproductive parameters in lactating dairy cows. Twenty-two lactating dairy cows were fed a total mixed ration once daily. The control diet was a typical ration for high producing cows in the UK (CP = 17.5%, ME = 11.8 MJ/kg DM). The cows were randomly divided into two groups, control diet (control; n = 12) and excess QDN diet (QDN; n = 10). The QDN group was fed an additional 250 g of urea per cow per day, from 10 days before insemination (day 0) until the end of the experiment, 17 days after the second insemination. Ten days before insemination, a synchronized oestrus was induced and the cows inseminated twice, 48 and 72 h after synchronization, with commercial frozen semen from a single sire. Ovaries were scanned using B-mode ultrasonography 10 days before insemination and then daily from 3 days before insemination. Eighteen of the cows (9 control and 9 QDN) were sampled more intensively to determine the pulsatile pattern of secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and growth hormone (GH). Cows were slaughtered 17 days after insemination, the reproductive tracts recovered and flushed to retrieve embryos. The excess QDN diet resulted in elevated (P < 0.05) plasma urea concentrations 3 days after starting urea feeding and these were maintained until the end of the experiment. However, the excess QDN diet did not significantly affect daily milk production or plasma concentrations of insulin and IGF-I. The QDN treatment did not significantly affect pulsatile patterns of secretion of LH and GH or the number of small (< 0.5 cm diameter) and medium to large follicles (> 0.5 cm diameter). Twenty cows ovulated following synchronization (control 11/12; QDN 9/10). There were no significant differences between the control and the QDN groups in the peak concentrations of oestradiol during the follicular phase or in the post-ovulatory pattern of plasma and milk progesterone secretion. Embryos and/or foetal membranes were recovered from 10 cows (5 control and 5 QDN). The results of the current study show that feeding excess QDN, as urea, for 27 days commencing 10 days before insemination had no effect on reproductive or metabolic hormonal parameters. Ovulation and the formation and function of the post-ovulatory corpus luteum were also unaffected by excess QDN. These data suggest that the harmful effects of excess intakes of QDN on fertility occur after 17 days following ovulation.

Abstract
High protein diets, which lead to excess production of nonprotein nitrogen such as ammonia and urea, have been associated with reduced fertility in dairy cows. In this study we test the hypothesis that diets containing high levels of quickly degradable urea nitrogen (QDN) compromise embryo development. Lactating dairy cows were fed mixed silage and concentrates twice daily. At 60 days postpartum, a synchronized estrus was induced and the cows were subsequently superovulated and inseminated using a standard protocol. On Day 7 after insemination, the uteri were flushed and embryos retrieved. At the start of treatment, cows were randomly allocated into three nutritional groups: control (CONT, n = 8), long (L-) QDN (n = 8) and short (S-) QDN (n = 9). The L-QDN cows were fed a supplement of urea from 10 days before insemination, and the S-QDN cows were fed the supplement from insemination until embryo collection. Both L- and S-QDN diets produced significant increases in plasma ammonia and urea 3 h post-feeding. The S-QDN but not the L-QDN diet was associated with a significant reduction in embryo yield. Embryo quality was also significantly reduced in the S-QDN cows. This study indicates that there is no deleterious effect on the yield and quality of embryos recovered 7 days after breeding when QDN feeding is initiated during the previous midluteal phase. However, introduction of a similar diet 10 days later, at the time of insemination, was deleterious. We suggest that QDN is toxic to embryos but cows can adjust within 10 days.

Abstract
Twelve Hereford x Angus heifers, 2.5 year, 492 +/- 17 kg (BCS = 5 +/- 0.5), were randomly assigned to one of three supplements, stratified by calving date and calf sex. Treatments consisted of a daily equivalent of: (1) low undegradable intake protein (UIP) (L: 908 g per cow per day; 36% CP, 108 g UIP), (2) middle UIP (M: 908 g per cow per day; 36% CP, 165 g UIP), and (3) high UIP (H: 908 g M + 243 g feather meal per cow per day; 46% CP, 335 g UIP). Cows were fed sudan grass hay (7.3% CP, as fed) daily at 2% BW (as fed). Supplement was individually fed twice weekly from Week 2 to Week 11 post-partum. Cow body weight (BW), backfat (BF) and rumpfat (RF) thicknesses decreased in all cows, (P < 0.05) yet did not differ among treatments (P > 0.10). There were no differences among treatments in calf BW (P > 0.10). Serum insulin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), milk components and yield did not differ among treatments (P > 0.10). Area under the curve (AUC) for serum LH was greater (P = 0.07) in H versus L and M (809 versus 599 and 607 +/- 69 U, respectively). No differences were observed in FSH AUC or mean serum concentrations (P > 0.10). Uterine pH did not differ among treatments or between supplement versus non-supplement days (P > 0.10). Serum progesterone remained below I ng/ml for all cows indicating absence of return to estrus. Under the conditions of this study, BW, BF, RF, serum insulin, BUN, milk components, and yield, uterine pH and serum FSH were not affected by level of UIP. However, supplement containing high levels of UIP enhanced GnRH-induced LH release.

Abstract
Dairy herd improvement test-day data, including milk urea concentrations measured using infrared test method, were collected from 60 commercial Ontario Holstein dairy herds for a 13-mo period between December 1, 1995, and December 31, 1996. The objective of the study was to describe, at the cow and the group level, the relationship between DHI milk urea concentrations and reproductive performance in commercial dairy herds. When interpreted at the cow level, there was no association between milk urea and the risk for pregnancy from an insemination occurring within the 45-d period preceding test day. However, a negative curvilinear relationship existed between milk urea and the risk for pregnancy from a first, second, or third insemination event occurring within the 45-d period following test day, with the odds for pregnancy being highest when the milk urea on the test day preceding the insemination was either below 4.5 mmol/L or greater than 6.49 mmol/L, compared with a concentration between 4.5 and 6.49 mmol/L. When interpreted at the group level, there was no association between group mean milk urea for cows between 50 and 180 DIM, and the group conception rate for cows receiving a first, second, or third insemination event in the 45-d period either preceding or following test day. Thus, while DHI milk urea measurements may be useful as a management tool to improve the efficiency of production or reduce nitrogen excretion, through helping to optimize the efficiency of protein utilization, they may have limited utility as a monitoring or diagnostic tool for reproductive performance. The results of this study suggest that good fertility may be achieved across a broad range of milk urea concentrations.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to describe the relationships between milk urea concentrations and nutritional management, production, and economic variables in commercial dairy herds. Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) test-day milk urea data, production data, and information on ration nutrient composition and feeding management programs were collected over a 13-mo period from 53 commercial Ontario dairy herds. Economic variables included gross milk revenue, feed costs, and income over feed costs. Herd mean milk urea concentrations had a positive relationship with dietary levels of crude protein (CP), rumen degradable protein (RDP), and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) and a negative relationship with dietary levels of nonfiber carbohydrates (NFC), forage:concentrate (F:C) ratio, NFC:CP ratio, and NFC:RDP ratio. These findings are consistent with experimental studies that used chemical methods of milk urea analysis. Herd mean milk urea concentration was not associated with feeding management (e.g., total mixed rations, component feeding, feeding frequency, or synchrony of forage and concentrate feeding). Herd mean milk urea was not associated with either mean milk yield or linear score. Herd mean milk urea had a positive relationship with feed costs per cow per day but was not associated with gross milk revenue per cow per day. Herds with a high mean milk urea concentration tended to have lower income over feed costs per cow per day. High herd mean milk urea concentrations were associated with higher feed costs per kilogram of milk fat but lower gross milk revenue and lower income over feed costs per kilogram of milk fat. The results of this study demonstrate that DHI milk urea measurements produced by an infrared test method offer a useful tool for monitoring the efficiency of nitrogen utilization in commercial dairy herds. The results also suggest that diets may be balanced to achieve greater efficiency of nitrogen utilization, lower milk urea concentrations, and lower feed costs, while still achieving high milk production. This may lead to improved income over feed costs.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted over a 2-yr period to investigate the influence of grain crude protein (CP) and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) concentration on reproduction and energy status of dairy cows grazing annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and oats (Avena sativa). Holstein cows (n = 122) were blocked by calving group [partum (0 d postpartum) vs. postpartum (41 +/- 19 d postpartum at study initiation)] and assigned to grain supplements containing high CP [22.8% of dry matter (DM)], moderate CP (16.6%), or moderate CP (16.2%)] supplemented with RUP from blood meal and corn gluten meal. Postpartum condition loss was greater and first-service pregnancy rate was lower for partum-group cows receiving high CP grain supplements compared with control cows receiving moderate CP supplements. The RUP supplements reduced grain consumption, increased days to first estrus, and reduced first-service pregnancy rate of partum-group cows. The reproduction of postpartum group cows was unaffected by protein supplements. Plasma urea nitrogen was higher for cows fed high CP diets, but plasma ammonia nitrogen, glycated hemoglobin, nonesterified fatty acids, beta-hydoxybutyrate, glucose, and insulin concentrations were similar to cows fed moderate CP. Excess postpartum condition loss, coupled with inconsistent protein supplement effects on days to first service and first-service pregnancy rate, suggest that energy deprivation may have contributed to the low fertility experienced by grazing cows in this study.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and fertility of dairy cows using field data. The data came from 24 dairy herds belonging to Ohio Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative Inc. Reproductive data and MUN measurements from cows that calved between June 1998 and May 1999 and that had been bred at least once were included in the study. Survival analysis, using the Cox proportional hazards model, was performed and days from calving to conception or to the end of the study was used as the outcome. Cows that had not been reported pregnant during the study were considered censored. The mean of monthly MUN values of cows before conception (or the end of the study for censored cows) was used to reflect the MUN status of a cow. Animals were categorized into quartiles based on MUN values in these data. Parity, calving season, peak milk yield, number of services, and herd were included in the models as fixed effects. Cows with MUN levels below 10.0 were 2.4 times more likely and cows with MUN levels between 10.0 and 12.7 mg/dl were 1.4 times more likely to be confirmed pregnant than cows with MUN values above 15.4 mg/dl. Our results indicate that increasing MUN levels appear to be negatively related to dairy cow fertility and are associated with a lower risk of detectable pregnancy at herd checks. They also suggest that the levels of MUN that are adversely associated with fertility might be lower than reported earlier.

Abstract
All DHI test-day data, including milk urea concentrations measured by infrared test method, were collected from 60 commercial Ontario Holstein dairy herds for a 13-mo period between December 1, 1995, and December 31, 1996. The objectives of this study were to describe the relationships between milk urea concentrations and seasonal factors, sampling factors, cow factors, and test-day production of milk, milk fat, protein, and SCC. Milk urea was associated with month and season; concentrations were the highest from July to September. Milk urea was generally lower in first-lactation cows. Milk urea was lowest during the first 60 d of lactation, higher between 60 and 150 d in milk, and lower after approximately 150 d in milk. In herds on an alternating a.m./p.m. test schedule, milk urea was generally lower in a.m. than p.m. tests. There was a positive nonlinear association between milk urea and milk yield, fat-corrected milk, and energy-corrected milk. There was a negative nonlinear association between milk urea and both milk fat and total protein percentages. While there was a negative nonlinear association between cow-level milk urea and linear score, the study found no association between herd average milk urea and herd average linear score. The associations described in this study using Dairy Herd Improvement test-day samples from commercial dairy herds and using an infrared test to measure milk urea are generally consistent with results from studies that used individual animals housed under research conditions and chemical methods to measure milk urea. Because milk urea varies by season, month, parity group, stage of lactation, and sample type, studies should control for these variables. Because of the apparent effect of a.m. and p.m. sampling on urea concentration, producers on an alternating a.m./p.m. test schedule should test routinely to establish a herd pattern for urea and submit the same sampling time consistently or both.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and risk of nonpregnancy after first breeding in a commercial dairy herd in Florida. A total of 515 and 558 cows were classified as having high (17 to 25 mg/dl) or low MUN (6 to 16 mg/dl) within 30 d before first breeding; a total of 158 (30.6%) and 189 (33.8%) cows were diagnosed as pregnant, respectively. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between MUN and risk of nonpregnancy controlling for other variables associated with fertility (parity, calving season, breeding season). An interaction was found showing that cows with high MUN that were bred during the summer were 18 times (OR = 17.9; 95% CI = 10.0 to 31.7) at higher risk of nonpregnancy compared to cows with low MUN that were bred during the winter.

Abstract
We conducted a study to determine the effects of excess dietary crude protein (CP) and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) on reproduction and lactation performance of Holstein cows. During each of three yearly replicates, cows were blocked by previous mature equivalent milk production and randomly assigned at calving (n = 47; partum group) or at 42 +/- 21 d postpartum (n = 134; postpartum group) to the following dietary treatments: 1) ryegrass pasture supplemented with a corn and soybean meal grain mix (high CP, moderate RUP); 2) ryegrass pasture mornings and corn silage evenings, supplemented with grain as in diet 1 (moderate CP, moderate RUP control diet), and 3) ryegrass pasture mornings and corn silage evenings, supplemented with a grain mix containing corn, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, and blood meal (moderate CP, high RUP). Dietary CP and RUP concentrations were approximately 23.1, 5.8; 17.7, 5.0; and 17.2, 6.8% of dry matter for diets 1 to 3, respectively. Plasma urea N concentrations were highest in cows fed diet 1 (25.0 mg/dl), intermediate in cows on diet 2 (20.1 mg/dl), and lowest in cows on diet 3 (18.5 mg/dl). Cows fed excess dietary protein (diet 1) exhibited lower first breeding pregnancy rates (24.1 vs. 41.0%) and lower overall pregnancy rates (53.4 vs. 75.4%) than did cows fed diet 2, increasing time nonpregnant by an average of 15.1 d per cow. Reproductive performance was similar between cows fed diets 2 and 3. Mean fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield was not affected by protein concentration (diet 1 vs. 2); however, partum group cows that received supplemental RUP (diet 3) produced more 3.5% FCM than controls in early lactation. Feeding grain diets that contained excess dietary protein impaired the reproductive performance of dairy cows grazing ryegrass.

Abstract
DIETARY PROTEIN AND DAIRY COW FERTILITY: Feeding more dietary protein has been negatively associated with dairy cow fertility in some but not all studies. We used meta-analysis to examine the relationship between dietary crude protein and conception rate. While a higher intake of dietary crude protein significantly lowered conception rate, the potential for feeding less degradable dietary protein to modify this relationship was not demonstrated. MILK UREA CONCENTRATIONS AND DAIRY COW FERTILITY: The use of milk urea as an indicator of dietary energy and protein intake and as an indicator of reproductive performance has been questioned. We found that changes in urea concentration in body fluids explained only 25% (p = 0.08) of the variance in conception rate after conducting a meta-analysis of available studies. INTERPRETATION OF MILK UREA CONCENTRATIONS: High intakes of dietary protein may induce adaptations in urea metabolism, and the negative relationship identified between high intakes of dietary protein and fertility for Northern Hemisphere dairy herds may not necessarily apply in Australasian dairy herds. Because of the potential for cows to adapt to high protein diets, the use of a single milk urea determination on a herd will have limited value as an indicator of nutritional status and little value as a predictor of fertility.

Abstract
Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 45) were assigned at calving to one of four diets arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial design. The two main factors were dietary concentration (dry matter basis) of 1) degradable intake protein (11.1 or 15.7%) and 2) supplemental fat (Ca salts of long-chain fatty acids; 0 or 2.2%). Soybean meal and urea were replaced with less degradable protein meals (corn gluten meal, meat and bone meal, fish meal, and blood meal). During the first 9 wk postpartum, cows fed diets containing the greater concentration of highly degradable protein demonstrated less follicular development on their ovaries, were delayed in their first luteal activity postpartum (25.2 vs. 38.6 d), accumulated less luteal tissue (< 15 vs. > 70 mm), and had lower plasma progesterone accumulated over time. The supplementation of Ca salts of long-chain fatty acids to the 15.7% degradable protein diet doubled the number of corpora lutea, reduced time to first rise in progesterone by 6 d, doubled the number of normal luteal phases, and restored the pattern of accumulated plasma progesterone concentrations to a pattern that was similar to that induced by other diets. Cows were synchronized to estrus and inseminated at approximately 65 d postpartum. Pregnancy rate was increased from 52.3 to 86.4% when fat was supplemented. Cows fed fat tended to have more corpora lutea and a larger corpus luteum and accumulated more plasma progesterone than did cows not fed fat. Diets containing excess degradable protein or Ca salts of long-chain fatty acids influenced ovarian structures and reproductive performance.

Abstract
In the first of two experiments investigating the effect of dietary urea on the survival and metabolism of ovine embryos, 30 Border Leicester x Scottish Blackface ewes received a maintenance diet (milled hay, molasses, minerals, vitamins) with no urea (control, C; n = 10) or with added urea at 15 g (low urea, LU; n = 10) or 30 g (high urea, HU; n = 10) kg-1 feed for a 12 week period. The degraded nitrogen (N) status relative to estimated rumen microbial N requirements was -2, +9 and +20 g per day, respectively. One week after allocation to diets, progesterone priming (12 days) commenced. Ewes received 800 IU of equine chorionic gonadotrophin at progesterone withdrawal, were inseminated 52 h later (Day 0) and embryos were collected from five ewes per group at Day 4 and from five ewes at Day 11. If available, one embryo was returned to each ewe; the rest were cultured in vitro. There was no effect of treatment on progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), or time of oestrus onset C, LU and HU plasma urea (P < 0.001) and ammonia levels (C vs. HU, P < 0.01; LU vs. HU, P < 0.05) differed. Day 4 HU embryos were retarded relative to C and LU embryos. After 3 days of culture, 70%, 66% and 0% of C, LU and HU embryos, respectively, were viable. Mid-term pregnancy rates following transfer were 63%, 43% and 33%. Only one HU lamb (male) was born following embryo transfer, its birthweight (10.1 kg) exceeded that of its C (n = 3; 7.0, 7.0, 7.5 kg) and LU (n = 2; 7.3, 8.2 kg) counterparts (P < 0.025). In the second experiment, C2 (2.5 g urea kg-1; n = 5) and HU2 (30 g kg-1; n = 7) diets which provided similar intakes of degraded N relative to microbial requirements as those for C and HU ewes in Experiment 1 were fed to Border Leicester x Scottish Blackface ewes superovulated with 16 mg of porcine follicle-stimulating hormone. Urea and ammonia levels in utero-oviductal samples were elevated in HU2 ewes (P < 0.05). At collection (Day 3), HU2 embryos used more glucose (P < 0.01) and, following culture, some exhibited up to a 2.8-fold increase in metabolism. In conclusion, excess rumen degradable N in ewe diets elevates urea and ammonia in plasma and in utero, with an associated increase in embryo mortality. Nevertheless, metabolism appears to be up-regulated in some embryos and, among those that survive, fetal growth appears to be enhanced.

Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the impact of dietary CP (13% vs. 20%), parity (first vs. second lactation or later), and breed (Holstein vs. Jersey) on the reproductive efficiency of dairy cows. Sixty-four cows were blocked by parity and breed and assigned to one of two treatments. Cows were removed from treatments on d 100 or 120 depending on pregnancy status. Cows were categorized by health status based on the occurrence of postparturient disorders. Plasma urea N concentrations were influenced by diet (8.6 vs. 21 mg/dl, 13 and 20% CP, respectively), parity, and breed. Reproductive indices were not influenced by diet except that days to first estimated ovulation increased for cows fed the 20% CP diet when health status was added to the model. Days to first observed estrus, first AI service, and cumulative pregnancy rate were affected by health status. Regression analysis for survival showed an interaction of diet and health status for days open. High CP diets tended to increase days open when cows had major health problems; otherwise, a high CP diet decreased days open. The implementation of a strict reproductive management program allowed high reproductive efficiency goals to be achieved regardless of plasma urea N concentrations.

Abstract
Nonlactating Holstein cows (n = 12) were assigned randomly to one of two diets (approximately 30% concentrate) in a crossover design. Urea and soybean meal were used to increase CP content of diet from 12.3 to 27.4%. Mean concentrations of plasma urea were 9.8 and 21.3 mg/dl for respective diets. After 35 d on diets, cows were brought to a synchronized estrus (progestin implant plus PGF2 alpha injection). From d 10.5 to 14.5 following estrus, cows received i.m. injections of decreasing doses of FSH to initiate superovulation. On d 3 of FSH treatment, PGF2 alpha was injected with FSH. Cows were bred twice by AI when detected in estrus. Embryos were collected nonsurgically 6.5 d after breeding, and quality was assessed using visual, microscopic, and staining techniques. Development of follicles throughout this period was monitored using ultrasonography. Using ultrasonography, no differences were detected in the number or percentages of preovulatory, anovulatory, and ovulatory follicles induced during superovulation. Number of recovered embryos averaged eight per cow. Numbers and percentages of normal embryos, abnormal or retarded embryos, and unfertilized ova were similar between diets, as were the numbers and percentages of transferable and nontransferable embryos. Excess intake of CP failed to affect the growth or number of ovarian follicles and health and number of embryos of energy adequate, nonlactating dairy cows.

Abstract
Total of 627 AI in 332 Holstein cows in nine herds were used to examine the relationship between serum urea N and conception rate. Cows were assigned randomly to one of three isocaloric diets varying in protein degradability and content. The AI occurred from 50 to 150 DIM. Mean serum urea N for each cow from 50 to 150 DIM was used to examine conception rate and serum urea N. The clinical interpretation of serum urea N on conception rate is evaluated using Bayes theorem from two approaches (dichotomization vs. continuous). Test information resulting from dichotomization of serum urea N into high and low categories (maximizing the average of test sensitivity and specificity) is compared with likelihood ratio approaches allowing a continuous measure. Likelihood ratio test indicates that conception rate decreases with serum urea N of > 14.9 mg/dl, but dichotomized test suggests that the decrease does not occur until serum urea N is > 20 mg/dl.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted utilizing 44 Alpine does (48 kg of BW) to examine the effects of dietary protein intake on nutritional status and performance of does during the latter half of pregnancy and parturition. All dry does were bred, confirmed pregnant, and fed a diet containing 9% CP and 2.04 Mcal of metabolizable energy/kg of DM through wk 11 of gestation. On wk 12, does were blocked by BW and assigned to one of three dietary treatments: 8.8% (low) CP, 11.0% (medium) CP, and 14.3% (high) CP. All diets were isocaloric (2.04 Mcal of metabolizable energy/kg of DM) and fed for ad libitum intake from wk 12 of gestation until parturition. Average CP intakes for low, medium, and high protein were 164, 220, and 303 g/d, respectively. Body weight gains increased with increasing CP intake. Kidding rates were 79, 100, and 93% for the low, medium, and high protein groups. Gestation length, litter size, and litter weight did not differ among treatment groups. Urea N in jugular blood plasma increased with increasing CP intake. Plasma glucose and whole blood beta-hydroxybutyrate tended to increase with increasing CP intake. Plasma glucose decreased 7, 6, and 3%, and NEFA increased 97, 400, and 187% between wk 13 and 21 of gestation for the low, medium, and high protein diets, respectively. The data suggest that the low protein diet may be inadequate to meet the does' protein requirement during late gestation, but there was no apparent advantage in feeding the high rather than medium protein diet. Intake of CP for the medium protein diet, 9.8% g/kg of BW.75, was 40% higher than that recommended by the NRC for pregnant goats.

Abstract
The following reproductive parameters were studied in 40 Icelandic dairy cows on 2 farms with free stall and tie stall housing: The time of onset of post-partum luteal activity; the time of first post-partum artificial insemination (AI); the time of conception; conception rate to first post-partum AI; the number of AI's per conception; length of gestation; and the number of days between 2 consecutive calvings. Milk for progesterone analysis was sampled 3 times a week from calving until first AI on farm 1, but every day for 90-100 days from calving on farm 2. In this study the average onset of luteal function was 21 days post-partum, the cows were inseminated 62 days and conceived 74 days post-partum. Conception rate to first AI was 71% and number of AI's per conception was 1.6. Significant differences were not found between the 2 farms. The reproductive performance of the cows in this study was greater than found in earlier studies of the Icelandic dairy cows and indicate that this animal has reproductive capabilities comparable to high producing foreign dairy cows.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to observe endocrine and reproductive responses of cows and heifers fed two diets (16 and 19% CP), which met undegradable protein requirements but differed in rumen degradable protein. Cows (n = 33) and heifers (n = 32) were randomly assigned within parity to diets at calving and remained on diets for 20 d after first breeding. Energy balance was determined twice weekly through the first luteal phase. Blood and milk samples were taken three times per week. Diet did not affect average daily energy balance, days to negative energy balance nadir, days to first ovulation, days to first service, or plasma glucose concentrations. First service conception rate was lower (31% vs. 48%) and plasma urea higher in animals fed the high protein diet. Days to energy balance nadir was correlated with days (r = .75) to first ovulation. Luteinizing hormone pulse frequency increased and pulse amplitude decreased in frequent samples (12-min intervals for 8 h) collected at 14 d postpartum versus sampling after the energy balance nadir. These data suggest that energy balance status plays an important role in determining the postpartum return of cyclic ovarian activity. Feeding excess CP as rumen degradable protein elevated plasma urea concentrations and decreased first service conception rate.

Abstract
To test effects of protein concentrations and degradability, 60 lactating Holstein cows in midlactation were offered the following diets during three trials between May and October in Tucson, AZ: high protein (18.4%), high degradability; high protein (18.5%), medium degradability; medium protein (16.1%), high degradability; and medium protein (16.1%), medium degradability. Diets comprised 39% alfalfa hay, 12% cottonseed hulls, 10% whole cottonseed, and 39% concentrate (DM) and concentrates contained 60, 40, 57, and 40% degradability, respectively, as determined by ficin assay. Rectal and ambient temperatures suggested that cows were under moderate to intense heat stress, as did group water intakes, which were increased about 15% by high degradability. Milk yields (3.5% FCM) and persistencies were lower for the high protein, high degradability diet than for all others. Mean DM intakes across treatments were quite high but were lower on high than medium protein; whereas ruminal ammonia and blood serum urea were higher on high protein. Milk composition, ruminal VFA, serum glucose, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and cortisol were not affected by treatment.

Abstract
Sixty-three Holstein cows were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the effects of dietary protein and exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone on performance postpartum and on circulating concentrations of progesterone. The experimental diets, 14 or 20% CP (dry basis), were fed from parturition to 14 wk postpartum. Blood serum urea N was elevated in the cows fed the 20% versus 14% CP diet. Feed intake was increased, but yield and composition of milk were not affected by the higher protein diet. Circulating concentrations of progesterone were lower in cows fed 20% than 14% protein on d 12 of both the synchronized and subsequent estrous cycles. Exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone administered on d 12 of the preceding estrous cycle did not increase the concentration of progesterone on d 12 of the subsequent estrous cycle. Luteal phase concentrations of progesterone were reduced by high dietary protein, but were not affected by gonadotropin-releasing hormone given on d 12 of the preceding cycle.

Abstract
Sixty high producing Holstein cows (15/treatment) averaging 157 d postpartum were offered the following diets: high protein (18.5%), high rumen degradability (60%); high protein (18.0%), medium degradability (41%); medium protein (15.4%), high degradability (61%); medium protein (15.0%), medium degradability (46%). All diets contained 32% corn silage, 15% alfalfa haylage, and 10% whole cottonseed. Degradabilities were determined by the ficin method and were lowered by replacing soybean meal with meat and bone meal and brewers dried grains. Cows were milked three times daily and the study was conducted from May 11 to June 23 in Provo, UT during ascending day temperatures but cool nights. Milk yields were not different for the respective treatments (36.9, 35.4, 34.8, and 36.7 kg/d), but milk fat was higher at high protein degradability: 3.11, 2.89, 3.04, 2.78%, respectively, resulting in a tendency toward higher FCM. Lower acetate and propionate and acetate:propionate ratios were observed for medium degradability diets and were consistent with lower milk fat. Rumen NH3, butyrate, valerate, isovalerate, 2-methyl butyrate, and blood urea N were higher for cows on high protein diets but were not affected by degradability. Serum glucose and cortisol were not significantly affected by protein treatment, but serum triiodothyronine was lower on high protein; the interaction effect for thyroxine was significant.

Abstract
In most but not all published studies, feeding diets with high concentrations of crude protein decreased reproductive efficiency. We were able to resolve some of the inconsistencies among published reports by considering the fate of consumed protein in the rumen and then using logistic regression analysis to identify factors affecting pregnancy. Our models showed that type and amount of protein fed explained much of the variation in conception rate. Age and dietary concentration of energy were identified as modifiers of the impact of protein on reproduction. Protein nutrition can affect reproduction through toxic effects of ammonia and its metabolites on gametes and early embryos, through deficiencies of amino acids, and by exacerbations of negative balances of energy. Alterations in the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-ovarian axis may be responsible for many of the effects of protein on reproduction.

Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the impact of dietary CP concentration (13 vs. 20%) and feeding strategy (total mixed ration vs. separate feeding of the forage and concentrate) on reproductive performance of 57 early lactation dairy cows. Cows were assigned to one of four treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Rations composed of 40% forage (50% grass-legume silage:50% corn silage) and 60% concentrate (DM basis) were fed from d 5 to 100 postpartum. Cows fed a total mixed ration had lower ruminal ammonia and plasma urea N concentrations compared with cows fed separately. Feeding strategy groups showed no differences in reproductive performance. Cows fed a 20% CP ration had higher CP intake, higher ruminal ammonia, and higher urea N concentration in plasma and vaginal mucus. There were no differences between low and high CP groups in days to first observed estrus (24 vs. 27), days to first service (55 vs. 59), days open (72 vs 82) or services per conception (1.5 vs. 1.8). Days to first estimated ovulation were longer (22 vs. 17) in the high vs. low CP groups, and there was an interaction between protein intake and lactation number. Cows managed with an intensive program for detection of estrus and for reproductive health did not show differences in reproductive efficiency when fed 13 or 20% CP rations.
