Abstract
In March, 2023, the European Food Safety Authority published a Scientific Opinion on Calf Welfare. This Opinion was prepared in response to a request from the European Commission to provide an independent view on the welfare of calves that reflected the most recent scientific knowledge. Data sources used to develop their recommendations included peer-reviewed studies, expert knowledge, and gray literature. The Opinion considered specific scenarios and welfare consequences of specific management practices, including feeding fiber to calves raised for white veal and amount of cow-calf contact. Their Opinion suggested that calves should be fed specific quantities of forage NDF during the rearing cycle. Regarding separation of calves, the Committee recommended that the calf should remain with the cow for a minimum of 24 h and then be housed with another calf. They further suggested that prolonged cow-calf contact should increasingly be implemented due to benefits to both cow and calf to minimize stress of separation. The objective of this review is to assess the veracity of these recommendations and the scientific data that underpins them. This review will present a literature to support the contention that, from a nutritional and management perspective, these recommendations may impair calf welfare by exposing calves to innutritious rations containing excess fiber and increasing their risk of morbidity and mortality due to poor colostrum intake and exposure to disease-causing pathogens. Alternative recommendations are made that may further the goal of calf welfare in the context of nutrition and housing.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the impact of calcium butyrate supplementation in calf starter on growth performance indices associated with early rumen development to decrease the volume of milk or milk replacer feeding and enhance early starter intake in Holstein calves. For this purpose, twelve Holstein calves were randomly assigned into three treatments (n = 4/treatment); a control without coated calcium butyrate, T1, and T2 treatments supplemented with coated calcium butyrate 3 g and 6 g per day/head, respectively. Body weight was measured at days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56 of the trial, and the average daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio were determined. Blood samples were collected at 14, 28, 42, and 56 days of trial for serological parameters. Gut morphometry was performed at the end of trial at slaughtering by collecting duodenal samples. Furthermore, the meat was also evaluated for its quality parameters including pH and tenderness after slaughtering. The results indicated that the feed intake, average daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and gut morphometric parameters involving villus height and crypts depth of calves were improved in coated calcium butyrate-supplemented groups. Furthermore, the supplementation of calf starter with coated calcium butyrate significantly enhanced serum concentrations of glucose and total protein. Besides, Beta hydroxy butyrate (BHBA) levels of blood were also found to be elevated in both treatment groups. However, it was revealed that coated calcium butyrate supplementation had no significant effect on meat quality parameters. In conclusion, the supplementation of calf starter with coated calcium butyrate could improve calf performance.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate whether feeding calves with replacers instead of cow's milk interferes with complete blood count, biochemistry variables, survival, and weight gain, and the cost-benefit of these feeds in the suckling phase. We used 16 calves of the Holstein breed with an average of 8±4 days and 39±6 kg of average body weight, randomly divided into two groups: Replacer Group (N=8), receiving four liters of replacer milk during the 60 experimental days; and the Milk Group (N=8), calves receiving four liters of cow's milk. We observed that animals fed with cow's milk had higher body weight and weight gain at all weightings compared to those who consumed the dairy replacer. There was no calve death during the study. The cost (R$) of the diet of the calves that consumed replacer was lower. However, if we consider the weight gain during the experiment, the cost to produce 1 kg of body weight was similar between the treatments, because the calves that consumed milk were weaned with an average of 19kg more body weight. In conclusion, the use of dairy replacers as a replacer for cow's milk caused calves to have an overall lower performance compared to those who received cow's milk during the suckling phase.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary supplementation of β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) on performance, nutrient digestibility, organ development, and serum composition in early-weaned goat kids. Sixty-four goat kids at 30 d of age were assigned to 4 treatments in a completely randomized design: 1) control (basal diet); 2) low (basal diet with 3 g/d per animal BHBA); 3) medium (basal diet with 6 g/d per animal BHBA; and 4) high (basal diet with 9 g/d per animal BHBA). Subsequently, 48 (6 kids per treatment) goat kids were randomly selected and slaughtered at 60 and 90 d of age. Compared with the control group, BHBA at low and high doses increased body weight (P < 0.05), average daily gain (P < 0.01), and average daily starter intake (P < 0.01). The BHBA improved organ development, especially at the lowest dose (P < 0.01). The digestibility of dry matter and crude protein increased with age (P < 0.05). However, BHBA did not affect nutrient digestibility. Compared with the control group, serum ceruloplasmin increased (P < 0.05) with high BHBA level at 90 d of age. However, the serum creatinine (P < 0.05) increased over time but was not affected by BHBA. The serum total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase decreased with the high dose of BHBA at 90 d of age (P < 0.01). In contrast, the serum glutathione peroxidase and malondialdehyde increased with the high doses of BHBA (P < 0.01). Overall, low doses of BHBA were positive for growth performance, organ development, and health status against weaning stress. Whereas high doses of BHBA in the long term could negatively affect antioxidant status.

Abstract
The study was aimed to examine the effects of age and dietary beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) on blood BHBA and blood health indicators in goat kids. Thirty male goats of five ages (1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months old) were selected for blood sampling to determine the influence of age. Another 64 goat kids (half males and half females) were weaned at 1 month old and fed with starter diets with control, low, medium, and high BHBA doses (0, 3, 6, and 9 g/animal/day, respectively). Six goats per treatment were selected for blood analysis at 2 and 3 months of age. There were significant effects (p < 0.01) of ages on the blood parameters of goat kids. The 6- and 12-month-old goats showed significantly lower blood total protein, globulin, BHBA, IgA, and IgM concentrations than did young goats, while they had a higher albumin-to-globulin ratio than young goats. The blood glucose decreased (p < 0.01) and IgG increased over time (p < 0.01). In blood, growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) were lower (p < 0.01) at 1- and 3-month-old goats than 12-month-old goats. The high dietary BHBA improved (p < 0.05) the ratio of albumin to globulin of 2-month-old kids compared with control. The blood GH and IGF-I were lower (p < 0.01) in the medium BHBA dose at 2 months of age than control. These results suggested that age greatly impacted blood composition, especially around weaning, and dietary BHBA showed beneficial regulating effects on blood total protein level in young goats.

Abstract
Weaning dairy calves from a high milk volume (≥8.0 kg/d) can negatively affect the growth and welfare even if it is performed in a step-down manner. Supplementation of Gln improved gut development of preweaning calves and mitigated weaning stresses of piglets to extents achieved with antibiotics. The study objective was to examine the effect of initiating a step-down weaning scheme with a Gln supplement at an early age on calf starter intake (CSI), average daily gain (ADG), and paracellular permeability of the intestinal epithelium of calves fed a high volume of milk (9.0 kg/d). Thirty-six Holstein heifer calves were assigned to 3 treatments (n = 12) as follows: (1) initiating weaning at 49 d of age (LW), (2) initiating weaning at 35 d of age (EW), and (3) initiating weaning at 35 d with a Gln supplement (2.0% of dry matter intake) from 28 to 42 d of age (EWG). Calves were fed 9.0 kg/d of whole milk until weaning was initiated by abruptly decreasing the milk volume to 3.0 kg/d. Weaning was completed once calves achieved ≥1.0 kg/d of CSI. The paracellular permeability of the intestinal epithelium was assessed with lactulose-to-mannitol ratio (LMR) in the blood on 1 d before, and 3 and 7 d after the initiation of weaning. The blood was analyzed for haptoglobin, lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), and metabolites including AA. The CSI increased once milk volume was restricted in all treatments. The CSI of LW was greater than that of EW and EWG during the first week of weaning. The LW, EW, and EWG took 11, 19, and 16 d to achieve ≥1.0 kg/d of CSI and were weaned at 60, 54, and 51 d of age, respectively. The body weight (BW) of LW, EW, and EWG at the initiation of weaning were 68.2, 58.7, and 59.5 kg, respectively. Both LW and EWG achieved similar ADG, but ADG of EW was lower than LW during the first week of weaning. All calves had similar ADG during the second week of weaning. The BW of LW, EW, and EWG at weaning were 74.8, 66.5, and 66.4 kg, representing a 2.0, 1.8, and 1.8-fold increase in birth weight, respectively. All calves had similar BW of 88.6 and 164.3 kg at 10 and 20 wk of age, respectively. Regardless of the age, serum haptoglobin and plasma LBP concentrations increased on d 3 and returned to baseline concentrations on d 7 during weaning. The EW had a lower plasma LBP concentration than LW and EWG on d 3 during weaning. The LMR was similar between treatments on d 3 but increased by 44% for EW and LW on d 7, whereas the LMR of EWG remained unchanged during weaning. The postprandial serum concentration of Gln, Met, Trp, and β-hydroxybutyrate were greater for EWG than EW during weaning. Beginning step-down weaning at 35 d with a Gln supplement can help maintain the gut barrier function and wean dairy calves with a satisfactory CSI at 7 wk of age without affecting postweaning growth.

Abstract
Metabolic consequences of an energy and protein rich diet can compromise metabolic health of cattle by promoting a pro-inflammatory phenotype. Laminitis is a common clinical sign, but affected metabolic pathways, underlying pathophysiology and causative relationships of a systemic pro-inflammatory phenotype are unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate changes in metabolome profiles of 20 months old Holstein bulls fed a high energy and protein diet and to identify novel metabolites and affected pathways, associated with diet-related laminitis. In a randomized controlled feeding trial using bulls fed a high energy and protein diet (HEP; metabolizable energy [ME] intake 169.0 ± 1.4 MJ/day; crude protein [CP] intake 2.3 ± 0.02 kg/day; calculated means ± SEM; n = 15) versus a low energy and protein diet (LEP; ME intake 92.9 ± 1.3 MJ/day; CP intake 1.0 ± 0.01 kg/day; n = 15), wide ranging effects of HEP diet on metabolism were demonstrated with a targeted metabolomics approach using the AbsoluteIDQ p180 kit (Biocrates Life Sciences). Multivariate statistics revealed that lower concentrations of phosphatidylcholines and sphingomyelins and higher concentrations of lyso-phosphatidylcholines, branched chain amino acids and aromatic amino acids were associated with an inflammatory state of diet-related laminitis in Holstein bulls fed a HEP diet. The latter two metabolites share similarities with changes in metabolism of obese humans, indicating a conserved pathophysiological role. The observed alterations in the metabolome provide further explanation on the underlying metabolic consequences of excessive dietary nutrient intake.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate how the inclusion of a blend of essential oils in milk replacer (MR) affects different outcomes of dairy heifers. The outcomes evaluated: feed intake, performance, body development, blood cells and metabolites, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), rumen fermentation, fecal scores, and respiratory scores. All outcomes were evaluated during pre-weaning (4–60 d of age), and carry-over effects during post-weaning (61–90 d of age) periods. The experimental units utilized were 29 newborn Holstein × Gyr crossbred dairy heifers, with genetic composition of 5/8 or more Holstein and 3/8 or less Gyr and body weight (BW) at birth of 32.2 ± 5.2 kg. Experimental units were assigned to either a control (CON, n = 15) or a blend of essential oil supplementation (BEO, n = 14) treatment, maintaining a balance of genetic composition. The BEO was supplemented in the MR with 1 g/d/calf of a blend of essential oils (Apex Calf, Adisseo, China) composed by plant extracts derived from anise, cinnamon, garlic, rosemary, and thyme. During the pre-weaning phase, all heifers were fed 5 L of MR/d reconstituted to 15% (dry matter basis), divided into two equal meals. Water and starter were provided ad libitum. During the post-weaning, animals received a maximum of 3 kg of starter/d, and ad libitum corn silage, divided into two meals. Feed intake, fecal and respiratory scores were evaluated daily. The BW was measured every three days, while body development was recorded weekly. Blood samples were collected on 0, 30, and 60 d of age for total blood cell count, weekly and on the weaning day to determinate ß-hydroxybutyrate, urea and glucose, and biweekly for IGF-1. Ruminal parameters (pH, volatile fatty acids, ammonia-N, and acetate:propionate proportion—C2:C3) were measured on days 14, 28, 42, 60, 74 and 90. A randomized complete block design with an interaction between treatment and week was the experimental method of choice to test the hypothesis of the BEO’s effect on all outcomes. An ANOVA procedure was used for continuous outcomes, and a non-parametric test was used for the ordered categorical outcomes, both adopting a CI = 95%. Results indicated that there was not enough evidence to accept the alternative hypothesis of the effect of BEO in MR on feed intake, performance, body development, and blood metabolites during both pre-weaning and post-weaning periods. However, results indicated that the inclusion of BEO in MR significantly affects the proportion of C2:C3 during pre- and post-weaning (P = 0.05). Similarly, the effect was significant for basophil (P ≤ 0.001), and platelet (P = 0.04) counts pre-weaning. The interaction between week and treatment was also significant for lymphocytes (P ≤ 0.001), revealing a cumulative effect. Lastly, fecal scores were also significant (P = 0.04) during pre-weaning, with lower values for BEO. The BEO contributed to ruminal manipulation in pre-weaning and carry-over effects in post-weaning, immunity improvement, and decreased morbidity of neonatal diarrhea in the pre-weaning phase.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of pre- and postweaning planes of nutrition on feed and metabolizable energy (ME) intake, growth, concentrations of glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood and rumen volatile fatty acids (VFA) from birth to 25 wk of age in Holstein heifers. Heifer calves (n = 36) were randomly assigned to receive either a low (5 L/d of whole milk) or high (10 L/d of whole milk) preweaning plane of nutrition from 1 to 7 wk of age, and either a low (70% concentrate dry total mixed ration) or high (85% concentrate dry total mixed ration) postweaning plane of nutrition from 11 to 25 wk of age. From birth to 25 wk of age, feed intake was recorded daily, and body measures were obtained weekly. Circulating hormone and metabolite concentrations were measured biweekly and total ruminal VFA, fecal starch, and body condition were assessed monthly. Overall, average daily gain and body weight were greater for heifers offered increased planes of nutrition during both the pre- and postweaning phases. Heifers offered the high preweaning plane had greater milk intake (7.7 ± 0.1 vs. 4.5 ± 0.1 L/d) but lower starter intake (0.3 ± 0.04 vs. 0.7 ± 0.04 kg/d) during the preweaning phase than those offered the low plane. High preweaning plane heifers also had greater ME intake from wk 1 to 7, but less ME intake at wk 9 (5.3 ± 0.3 vs. 6.6 ± 0.2 Mcal/kg) than those offered the low plane. Furthermore, overall glucose (118.8 ± 2.9 vs. 110.1 ± 2.9 mg/dL) and IGF-1 (101.6 ± 3.6 vs. 75.9 ± 3.6 ng/mL) concentrations were greater for high versus low preweaning plane heifers, although circulating insulin and BHB did not differ between preweaning plane groups. However, heifers offered the high preweaning plane had reduced total rumen VFA concentrations compared with heifers offered the low plane in the preweaning phase (47.3 ± 2.0 vs. 55.6 ± 2.1 mM). During the postweaning phase, dry matter intake and ME were consistently greater in heifers offered the high postweaning plane. Overall insulin (2.0 ± 0.1 vs. 1.8 ± 0.1 ng/mL), glucose (97.1 ± 0.6 vs. 92.1 ± 0.6 ng/mL), IGF-1 (178.0 ± 4.8 vs. 155.8 ± 4.8 ng/mL), and BHB concentrations (8.8 ± 0.2 vs. 8.1 ± 0.2 ng/mL) were greater in heifers offered the high than the low postweaning plane. In addition, heifers offered the high postweaning plane had increased VFA concentrations in the postweaning phase (73.4 ± 1.3 vs. 63.9 ± 1.3 mM) compared with heifers offered the low postweaning plane. The results indicated that increasing the pre- and postweaning planes of nutrition along with energy levels positively influenced several indicators associated with heifer development before 25 wk of age. Nevertheless, there was limited interaction in growth and development indicators between the 2 phases.

Abstract
Essential oils extracted from specific plants can exhibit antimicrobial properties that make them potential antibiotic alternatives. The objective was to evaluate an essential oil and prebiotic combination (EOC) on the growth, development, and health status of growing neonatal calves. Forty Holstein newborn calves were blocked by birth date and alternately assigned to 1 of 2 treatments. Treatments were a pelleted calf starter (CS) without (control) or with EOC at 44.1 ppm. Calves were fed the experimental CS for ad libitum consumption from 3 d of age through the end of the 70-d experiment. Calves were fed 2 L of whole milk twice daily to 10 d of age, then 3 L twice daily through d 35, and then fed 3 L once daily with abrupt weaning occurring after 42 d of age. The average daily gain (0.78 and 0.87 kg/d for control and EOC, respectively) was greater for calves fed EOC compared with calves fed the control. Calves fed EOC demonstrated greater dry matter intake (1.63 and 1.74 kg/d) compared with calves fed the control. Feed conversion ratio (0.62 and 0.65 kg of gain/kg of dry matter intake) was greater for calves fed EOC compared with calves fed the control. At 70 d of age, calves fed EOC demonstrated increased body frame measurements (hip height, body length, heart girth, abdominal girth, and pastern) compared with calves fed the control. The incidence of scours score 4 (mild diarrhea) was 3.5 incidences lower for calves fed EOC compared with calves fed the control, whereas the incidence of scours score 5 (severe diarrhea) for calves fed EOC was 0.5 incidences lower than calves fed the control. Blood concentrations of IgG and IgM on d 14, IgA on d 28, and total serum protein on d 42 were all greater for calves fed EOC compared with calves fed the control. The blood volatile fatty acid concentrations were greater for calves fed EOC compared with calves fed the control, which indicated enhanced ruminal development. Total-tract digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, starch, and many minerals were increased for calves fed EOC compared with calves fed the control. The inclusion of an EOC blend into a CS demonstrates promising benefits for enhancing calf growth, ruminal development, gut health, nutrient digestibility, and immunity. The use of an EOC blend can be a plausible alternative to feeding subtherapeutic antibiotics for improving calf performance, health, and immunity.

Abstract
Context
Early life nutrition of calves influences their performance later in life. There is limited literature demonstrating the effects of rearing dairy calves in early life on milk with either exclusively forage or concentrate starter diets on metabolic and immune function and post-weaning growth and body composition on a pasture only diet.
Aim
This study evaluated the effects of feeding Wagyu × Holstein Friesian calves a forage starter (FS) or a concentrate starter (CS) for the first 14 weeks of rearing on rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, immune function, growth and body composition to Week 41.
Methods
Group-housed calves (Wagyu × Friesian, 10 calves per group, three groups per treatment) were fed milk (2 L per calf twice daily) until Week 7, then transitioned to once a day milk feeding until weaning by Week 9, with ad libitum access to either FS or CS. All calves were transferred to graze ryegrass pastures a week after transitioning to once daily milk feeding, with starter feeds removed gradually by Week 14. Thereafter, calves were reared together on pasture until Week 41.
Results
Solid feed intake was lower in FS than CS calves during the first 7 weeks. Total short chain fatty acids were lower, but acetate to propionate ratio and rumen pH were higher in FS than CS calves at Week 7, with no differences observed at Week 12 or 30. Plasma β-hydroxybutyrate an indicator of ketogenic ability of the rumen in developing calves was higher in FS vs CS calves at weaning. Further, FS calves had lower concentrations of circulating non-esterified fatty acids compared with CS calves at weaning. Compared with CS calves, FS calves grew slower for the first 14 weeks which was associated with lower plasma IGF-1 levels. However, FS calves had greater average daily gain after 14 weeks when on pasture and had similar plasma IGF-1 at 30 weeks and similar body weight and body composition (muscle and subcutaneous fat deposition) by Week 41 compared to CS calves.
Conclusions
These results indicate that offering a FS starter has better prepared calves for weaning onto pasture and potentially improved utilisation of forage post-weaning to achieve similar muscle and fat deposition and overall liveweight in both groups by 41 weeks.
Implications
Dairy beef calves can be successfully reared using forage as the only solid feed source without affecting their growth performance on pasture until 10 months of age. Rearing calves using forage will contribute to reducing the usage of concentrate feeds in pastoral dairy-beef production systems and provide an opportunity to fulfil the market requirements and standards for grain-free beef production.

Abstract
In early-weaning programs, dietary effects on calf rumen development have been studied extensively, but very little information is available about the effects of a solid diet on hepatic metabolism in preweaned dairy calves. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of physical form of oats in calf starter on the expression of key hepatic gluconeogenic, β-oxidation, and acute phase protein genes in preweaned dairy calves. Samples were analyzed from 3 experiments that fed either ground or whole oats in calf starters. Briefly, 7 calves were slaughtered at 5 wk of age in experiment 1, 6 were slaughtered at 6 wk in experiment 2, and 7 were slaughtered at 7 wk in experiment 3, and liver tissue was collected for gene expression analysis. Calves from experiments 1 and 2 were cannulated, and their rumen pH and volatile fatty acids were measured during treatment periods. The mRNA expression of gluconeogenic enzymes pyruvate carboxylase (PC), cytosolic and mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PCK1 and PCK2), fatty acid oxidation enzyme carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT1), and positive acute phase protein haptoglobin (HPT) was measured by real-time quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR. Expression of HPT was greater in calves fed whole oats than in calves fed ground oats; however, PC, PCK1, PCK2, and CPT1 were not affected by the physical form of oats. All enzymes (PCK1, PCK2, HPT, and CPT1) except PC were affected by experiment; PCK1 and CPT1 had greater expression in experiment 2 than in experiments 1 and 3. Expression of PCK2 was similar in experiments 2 and 3 but greater than experiment 1. Expression of HPT was similar in experiments 1 and 2 but greater than experiment 3. The mRNA expression of enzymes PCK1, PCK2, and CPT1 differed between experiments 1 and 2 and was negatively correlated with rumen propionate and butyrate but had a positive relationship with rumen acetate. Similarly, rumen pH was different in experiments 1 and 2, averaging 5.69 in experiment 1 and 4.81 in experiment 2, and there was a negative correlation between mRNA expression of rate-limiting gluconeogenic PCK1, PCK2, and β-oxidation CPT1 enzymes and rumen pH of calves in experiments 1 and 2. We concluded that the physical form of oats in calf starter did not affect gene expression of gluconeogenic and β-oxidation enzymes in preweaned dairy calves. However, lower rumen pH may be related to the upregulation of these enzymes.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of the weaning transition and supplemental rumen-protected butyrate on subacute ruminal acidosis, feed intake, and growth parameters. Holstein bull calves (n = 36; age = 10.7 ± 4.1 d; ± standard deviation) were assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups: 2 preweaning groups, animals fed milk replacer only (PRE-M) and those fed milk replacer, calf starter, and hay (PRE-S); and 2 postweaning groups, animals fed milk replacer, calf starter, and hay without supplemental rumen-protected butyrate (POST-S) or with supplemental rumen-protected butyrate at a rate of 1% wt/wt during the 2-wk weaning transition (POST-B). Milk replacer was provided at 1,200 g/d; starter, water, and hay were provided ad libitum. Weaning took place over 14 d by reducing milk replacer provision to 900 g/d in wk 7, 600 g/d in wk 8, and 0 g/d in wk 9. Rumen pH was measured continuously for 7 d during wk 6 for PRE-S and PRE-M and during wk 9 for POST-S and POST-B. After rumen pH was measured for 7 d, calves were euthanized, and rumen fluid was sampled and analyzed for volatile fatty acid (VFA) profile. Individual feed intake was recorded daily, whereas, weekly, body weights were recorded, and blood samples were collected. Compared with PRE-M, PRE-S calves tended to have a greater total VFA concentration (35.60 ± 11.4 vs. 11.90 ± 11.8 mM) but mean rumen pH was unaffected (6.25 ± 0.22 vs. 6.17 ± 0.21, respectively). Between PRE-S (wk 6) and POST-S (wk 9), calf starter intake increased (250 ± 219 vs. 2,239 ± 219 g/d), total VFA concentrations increased (35.6 ± 11.4 vs. 154.4 ± 11.8 mM), but mean rumen pH was unaffected (6.25 ± 0.22 vs. 6.40 ± 0.22, respectively). Compared with POST-S, POST-B calves had greater starter intake in wk 7, 8, and 9, but POST-B tended to have lower total VFA concentration (131.0 ± 11.8 vs. 154.4 ± 11.8 mM) and lower mean ruminal pH (5.83 ± 0.21 vs. 6.40 ± 0.22). In conclusion, the weaning transition does not appear to affect rumen pH and VFA profile, but supplementing rumen-protected butyrate during the weaning transition increased starter intake and average daily gain. Further, these data suggest that the ability of the rumen to manage rumen pH changes fundamentally postweaning. Why weaned calves with lower rumen pH can achieve higher calf starter intakes is unclear; these data suggest the effect of rumen pH on feed intake differs between calves and cows.

Abstract
Promotion of microbial butyrate production in the reticulorumen is a widely used method for enhancing forestomach development in calves. Additional acceleration of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, both the forestomach and lower parts of the GIT (e.g., abomasum, intestine, and also pancreas), can be obtained by dietary butyrate supplementation. For this purpose, different sources (e.g., butyrate salts or butyrins), forms (e.g., protected or unprotected), methods (e.g., in liquid feed or solid feed), and periods (e.g., before or after weaning) of butyrate administration can be used. The aim of this paper was to summarize the knowledge in the field of butyrate supplementation in feeds for newborn calves in practical situations, and to suggest directions of future studies. It has been repeatedly shown that supplementation of unprotected salts of butyrate (primarily sodium salt) in milk replacer (MR) stimulates the rumen, small intestine, and pancreas development in calves, with a supplementation level equating to 0.3% of dry matter being sufficient to exert the desired effect on both GIT development and growth performance. On the other hand, the effect of unprotected butyrins and protected forms of butyrate supplementation in MR has not been extensively investigated, and few studies have documented the effect of butyrate addition into whole milk (WM), with those available focusing mainly on the growth performance of animals. Protected butyrate supplementation at a low level (0.3% of protected product in DM) in solid feed was shown to have a potential to enhance GIT development and performance of calves fed MR during the preweaning period. Justification of this form of butyrate supplementation in solid feed when calves are fed WM or after weaning needs to be documented. After weaning, inclusion of unprotected butyrate salts in solid feed was shown to increase solid feed intake, but the effect on GIT development and function has not been determined in detail, and optimal levels of supplementation are also difficult to recommend based on available reports. Future studies should focus on comparing different sources (e.g., salts vs. esters), forms (e.g., protected vs. unprotected), and doses of supplemental butyrate in liquid feeds and solid feeds and their effect not only on the development of rumen, abomasum, and small intestine but also the omasum and large intestine. Furthermore, the most effective source, form, and dose of supplemental butyrate in solid feed depending on the liquid feed program (e.g., MR or WM), stage of rearing (e.g., pre- or postweaning), and solid composition (e.g., lack or presence of forage in the diet) need to be determined.

Abstract
After birth, a newborn calf has to adapt to an extrauterine life characterized by several physiological changes. In particular, maturation of the gastrointestinal tract in a new environment loaded with potential pathogens, which can predispose neonatal calves to develop diarrhea, and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality during the first 4 wks of life. We aimed to investigate the inflammatory adaptations at a transcriptomic level in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to a mild diarrhea in neonatal dairy calves using RNA isolated from fresh fecal samples. Eight newborn Jersey male calves were used from birth to 5 wks of age and housed in individual pens. After birth, calves received 1.9 L of colostrum from their respective dams. Calves had ad-libitum access to water and starter grain (22% CP) and were fed twice daily a total of 5.6 L pasteurized whole milk. Starter intake, body weight (BW), fecal score, withers height (WH), and rectal temperature (RT) were recorded throughout the experiment. Blood samples were collected weekly for metabolic and inflammatory profiling from wk 0 to wk 5. Fresh fecal samples were collected weekly and immediately flash frozen until RNA was extracted using a Trizol-based method, and subsequently, an RT-qPCR analysis was performed. Orthogonal contrasts were used to evaluate linear or quadratic effects over time. Starter intake, BW, and WH increased over time. Fecal score was greatest (2.6 ± 0.3) during wk 2. The concentrations of IL-6, ceruloplasmin, and haptoglobin had a positive quadratic effect with maximal concentrations during wk 2, which corresponded to the maximal fecal score observed during the same time. The concentration of serum amyloid A decreased over time. The mRNA expression of the proinflammatory related genes TLR4, TNFA, IL8, and IL1B had a positive quadratic effect of time. A time effect was observed for the cell membrane sodium-dependent glucose transporter SLC5A1, for the major carbohydrate facilitated transporter SLC2A2, and water transport function AQP3, where SLC5A1 and AQP3 had a negative quadratic effect over time. Our data support the use of the fecal RNA as a noninvasive tool to investigate intestinal transcriptomic profiling of dairy calves experiencing diarrhea, which would be advantageous for future research including nutritional effects and health conditions.

Abstract
A blend of essential oils (EO; carvacrol, caryophyllene, -cymene, cineole, terpinene, and thymol) and prebiotics (arabinogalactans; Stay Strong; Ralco, Inc., Marshall, MN) was designed to promote immunity and stimulate appetite to diminish health challenges and stresses experienced by newborn calves. It was hypothesized that calves supplemented with the medium dose (2.5 g/feeding) of the commercial EO would demonstrate the optimal response. The study objective was to determine the optimal feeding rate of EO when added to a milk replacer (MR) compared with feeding a control or a yeast cell wall additive (YCW). One hundred Holstein calves from a commercial dairy farm were blocked by birth date and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatments. Treatments were a control (CON), a 24:20% CP:fat (as-fed basis) MR (24:20 MR) without EO; EO mixed into the 24:20 MR at a rate of 1.25 g/feeding (EO-0.5), EO mixed into the 24:20 MR at a rate of 2.5 g/feeding (EO-1.0), or EO mixed into the 24:20 MR at a rate of 3.75 g/feeding (EO-1.5); or 24:20 MR with YCW mixed in at a rate of 2 g/calf at each feeding. The 24:20 MR was fed in a bucket 2 times/d at a rate of 0.28 kg/calf daily for 14 d, which was increased to 0.43 kg/calf at 2 times/d until d 35 and then reduced to 1 time/d at d 36 to facilitate weaning at d 42. Decoquinate was added to the MR at 41.6 mg/kg for coccidiosis control. Calves were housed in individual hutches bedded with straw with ad libitum access to a 20% CP pelleted calf starter and water. All data were analyzed using PROC MIXED as a completely random design. Calves fed EO-0.5 demonstrated greater ( < 0.05) ADG (0.65, 0.71, 0.64, 0.64, and 0.63 kg/d for the CON, EO-0.5, EO-1.0, EO-1.5, and YCW, respectively) through d 56 compared with calves fed EO-1.0 and YCW and tended ( < 0.10) to have greater ADG than calves fed the CON and EO-1.5. Total BW gains were greater ( < 0.05) for calves fed EO-0.5 compared with calves fed EO-1.0 and YCW, with calves fed the CON and EO-1.5 being intermediate and similar. Body length and wither height gains (final - initial) were greater ( < 0.05) for calves fed EO-0.5 compared with calves fed the other treatments. Hip width gains were similar ( < 0.10) among treatments. Hip height gains were increased ( < 0.05) for calves fed EO-0.5 compared with calves fed the CON, EO-1.0, EO-1.5, and YCW. These results demonstrate that supplementing EO-0.5 (1.25 g/calf daily) in a 24:20 MR may be the optimal feeding rate to enhance growth rates compared with feeding a 24:20 MR and a 24:20 MR containing YCW or other inclusion rates of EO.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of replacing corn grain with citrus pulp (CSP) in the starter concentrate on performance and metabolism of dairy calves. Twenty-four individually housed Holstein calves were blocked according to birth date and weight and fed one of the following concentrates: (1) concentrate containing 64% corn and 0% CSP (0CSP); (2) concentrate containing 32% corn and 32% CSP (32CSP); and (3) concentrate containing 0% corn and 64% CSP (64CSP). Animals were fed 4 L of milk replacer daily (20% crude protein, 16% ether extract) divided in two meals (at 0700 hours and 1800 hours). The starter feed and water were provided ad libitum. Starter intake and faecal score were monitored daily. Bodyweight and measurements (withers height, hip width and heart girth) were recorded weekly. Blood samples were collected weekly, and ruminal fluid samples at 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age, 2 h after the morning feeding. After 8 weeks, animals were harvested to evaluate the development of the proximal digestive tract. Concentrate composition had no effect (P > 0.05) on concentrate intake, weight gain, bodyweight, body measurements, and faecal score. However, there was a lower concentration of ruminal butyrate (P < 0.05) in animals receiving 0CSP than in those fed the starter containing CSP. The 0CSP concentrate resulted in a lower (P < 0.05) total weight of the proximal digestive tract, weight of the reticulum–rumen and weight of the omasum than did the other concentrates. The length of the rumen papillae was the greatest (P < 0.05) in 32CSP-fed animals. However, papillae area in animals fed 32CSP concentrate was larger (P < 0.05) than that in 0CSP- and 64CSP-fed animals, with no difference observed between these latter two treatments. However, 0CSP-fed animals showed a higher proportion of abomasum than did the animals fed 32CSP and 64CSP concentrates. The replacement of 50% or 100% of corn by CSP in the starter feed of dairy calves did not affect performance and probably contributed to the better development of the proximal digestive tract.

Abstract
The enhanced growth performance of calves fed a higher plane of nutrition pre-weaning is well documented, and the effect of butyrate on the development of the gastrointestinal tract in calves has been evaluated. The aim of this study was to examine the synergistic effects of ad libitum milk replacer (MR) feeding and butyrate supplementation on growth performance and energy metabolism in calves. Sixty-four (32 male, 32 female) Holstein calves were examined from birth until wk 11 of life. Calves received MR either ad libitum (Adl) or restrictively (Res) with (AdlB+, ResB+) or without (AdlB-, ResB-) 0.24% butyrate supplementation. Colostrum and transition milk were fed in predefined amounts (Res or Adl) for the first 3 d postpartum. Ad libitum and restrictive MR feeding with or without butyrate was performed from d 4 until wk 8 of age. From wk 9 to 10, all calves were gradually weaned and were fed 2 L/d until the end of the trial. Concentrate (CON), hay, and water were freely available. Intakes of MR and CON were measured daily. Calves were weighed at birth and weekly thereafter. Blood was drawn on d 1 before the first colostrum intake; on d 2, 4, and 7; and weekly thereafter until the end of the study to measure plasma concentrations of metabolites and hormones. Liver samples were taken at d 50 and at the end of the study to determine gene expression related to glucose metabolism. Milk, MR, and total nutrient intake were greater, but CON intake was lower in Adl than in Res calves, resulting in a greater body weight, but partially lower gain to feed ratio in Adl than in Res. Plasma concentrations of glucose and insulin were higher during the ad libitum milk-feeding period, whereas plasma β-hydroxybutyrate was lower in Adl than in Res. Plasma concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids, lactate, total bilirubin, and cortisol were lower, but triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were higher in Adl than in Res at specific time points. Feed intake, growth performance, and metabolic and endocrine changes were insignificantly affected by butyrate, and hepatic gene expression of enzymes related to endogenous glucose production was barely influenced by ad libitum MR feeding and butyrate supplementation. Intensive MR feeding indicated greater stimulation of growth and anabolic metabolism, but butyrate supplementation did not further improve postnatal growth or anabolic processes either in intensive or restrictive MR-fed calves.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of partial replacement of corn in the starter feed with crude glycerin on performance and energy metabolism of liquid-fed dairy calves. Twenty-four newborn individually housed Holstein calves were blocked according to weight and date of birth and randomly assigned to different starter feed treatments during 8 weeks: no crude glycerin; 5% crude glycerin; 10% crude glycerin on dry matter basis. All calves were individually fed daily 4 L of a commercial milk replacer (22.3% crude protein and 19.3% fat). Calves had individual access to starter diet and ad libitum access to water daily. Individual feed intake and faecal scores were recorded daily. Bodyweight and corporal measurements (heart girth, hip width, and withers height) were weekly recorded. From the second week of age, blood samples were collected weekly, 2 h after morning feeding, for determination of plasma glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations. Ruminal fluid was collected at 4, 6 and 8 weeks of age for determination of pH and short-chain fatty acids. At the end of the eighth week, animals were harvested to evaluate development of the proximal digestive tract. Feed intake, average daily gain, bodyweight or body measurements were not affected (P > 0.05) by the inclusion of crude glycerin in the starter feed. Faecal scores indicated that most of the calves had mild diarrhoea, with no treatment effect. Total short-chain fatty acids and the concentration of individual acids, as well as blood parameters, were not affected (P > 0.05) by the feed treatments. The total forestomach weight, the average weight of each compartment, the maximum capacity of reticulum-rumen, and papillae number, height and width were not affected (P > 0.05). In conclusion, crude glycerin can be used as an alternative energy source, replacing corn up to 10% in the starter feed for liquid-fed dairy calves without affecting growth, rumen development or metabolism.

Abstract
Studies have shown that calves fed milk replacers (MR) with crude protein (CP) concentrations greater than 20%, as typically found in conventional MR, have higher dry matter intakes (DMI) and greater average daily gains (ADG) but consume less starter, which can lead to stress during weaning and reduced rumen development. The greater amount of CP being fed to preweaned calves may alter their nitrogen (N) balance, and excess N may be excreted in the urine. The objective of this study was to determine N utilization in preweaned calves fed diets varying in the amount of CP and MR fed. This study used 24 newborn dairy heifer calves blocked by birth and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: (1) 446 g dry matter (DM) of a conventional MR (CON; 20% CP, 20% fat), (2) 669 g DM of a moderately high protein MR (moderate; MOD; 26% CP, 18% fat), or (3) 892 g DM of a moderately high protein MR (aggressive; AGG; 26% CP, 18% fat). All calves had ad libitum access to starter and water. Both MR and starter were medicated with decoquinate. During weaning (d 43–49), the morning MR feeding ceased. On d 50, all MR feedings ended; however, starter and water intakes were continuously recorded until d 56. At 5 wk of age, urine was collected using urinary catheters for 3 d and chromium oxide was administered by bolus at 2 g/d for 7 d to estimate N efficiency. Calves fed MOD and AGG had similar starter intakes, feed efficiencies, and ADG, with the combined treatments having reduced starter intakes (258 vs. 537 g/d), greater ADG (674 vs. 422 g/d), and improved feed efficiency (0.57 vs. 0.45 gain:feed) compared with CON calves preweaning. However, DMI and water intake were similar across all treatments. Results from the N utilization phase showed that MOD and AGG treatments had similar but lower N efficiency compared with CON calves (45.5 vs. 52.7%). This could be due to MOD- and AGG-fed calves having greater urine volume and thereby, greater combined urine N output compared with CON calves (17.6 vs. 12.1 g/d). In summary, feeding >0.66 kg (DM) from a 26% CP MR increased ADG and improved feed efficiency during the preweaning period but reduced starter intake and lowered N efficiency.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products (SCFP) in the calf starter and milk on ruminal fermentation, gastrointestinal morphology, and microbial community in the first 56 d of life. Thirty Holstein bull calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups: a texturized calf starter containing 0 (CON), 0.5, or 1% SCFP (XPC, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA) of dry matter from d 4 to 56. In addition, the XPC-supplemented calves were fed with 1 g/d SCFP (SmartCare, Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA) in milk from d 2 to 30. All calves were fed 4 L of colostrum within 1 h of birth and were subsequently fed milk twice daily until weaned on d 56. Rumen fluid was collected by an esophageal tube 4 h after the morning feeding on d 28 and 56 to determine ruminal pH, ammonia-N, and volatile fatty acids concentrations. On d 56, 15 (5 per treatment) calves were harvested and slaughter weight, gastrointestinal morphology parameters, and bacteria community were recorded. Papilla length, width, and surface area were measured from 5 locations within the rumen. Villus height, width, surface area, crypt depth, and villus height-to-crypt depth ratio were measured in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Next-generation sequencing technology was used to test the microbial community of the rumen and duodenum samples on d 28 and 56. Data were analyzed by MIXED procedure in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) with contrast statements to declare CON versus all SCFP and 0.5 versus 1% SCFP in starter grains. Ruminal pH, ammonia-N, and total volatile fatty acids were not altered by SCFP. However, the supplemented groups exhibited higher ruminal butyrate concentrations coinciding with higher Butyrivibrio and lower Prevotella richness than CON group. Supplementation of SCFP increased papilla length in the rumen. In the small intestine, SCFP reduced crypt depth of jejunum, and increased villus height-to-crypt depth ratio in all segments of the small intestine, especially when supplemented at a higher dosage in the starter. In conclusion, Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products improved gastrointestinal morphology, possibly due to increased Butyrivibrio and decreased Prevotella richness of the rumen fluid, which resulted in an increase in butyrate production, and the effect was slightly greater with the higher dosage of SCFP in the starter.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing corn grain for sugar cane molasses (MO) or glucose syrup (GS) in the starter concentrate on performance and metabolism of dairy calves. Thirty-six individually housed Holstein male calves were blocked according to weight and date of birth and assigned to one of the starter feed treatments, during an 8 week study: i) starter containing 65% corn with no MO or GS (0MO); ii) starter containing 60% corn and 5% MO (5MO); iii) starter containing 55% corn and 10% MO (10MO); and iv) starter containing 60% corn and 5% GS (5GS). Animals received 4 L of milk replacer daily (20 crude protein, 16 ether extract, 12.5% solids), divided in two meals (0700 and 1700 h). Starter and water were provided ad libitum. Starter intake and fecal score were monitored daily until animals were eight weeks old. Body weight and measurements (withers height, hip width and heart girth) were measured weekly before the morning feeding. From the second week of age, blood samples were collected weekly, 2 h after the morning feeding, for glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate and lactate determination. Ruminal fluid was collected at 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age using an oro-ruminal probe and a suction pump for determination of pH and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). At the end of the eighth week, animals were harvested to evaluate development of the proximal digestive tract. The composition of the starter did not affect (p>0.05) concentrate intake, weight gain, fecal score, blood parameters, and rumen development. However, treatment 5MO showed higher (p<0.05) total concentration of SCFAs, acetate and propionate than 0MO, and these treatments did not differ from 10MO and 5GS (p>0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that the replacement of corn by 5% or 10% sugar cane molasses or 5% GS on starter concentrate did not impact performance, however it has some positive effects on rumen fermentation which may be beneficial for calves with a developing rumen.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The first cause of death of dairy calves is often diarrhea which is mainly caused by pathogenic bacteria, which can result in excessive use of antibiotics. However, facing the increase concern by the industry and consumers, the use of antibiotics not only to control pathogens, but also to manipulate growth, has become a challenge. Alternative additives, such essential oils, have the potential to decrease antibiotic use, without reducing performance or increasing mortality of dairy calves. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a commercial blend of essential oils, incorporated into the calf starter and/or milk replacer to monitor the effect on overall calf performance, fecal scores and rumen fermentation parameters. A total of 30 Holstein calves received 6 l/day of a liquid diet, consisting of a commercial milk replacer containing 20% CP : 15% fat (EE). Calves had free choice access to water and calf starter. Weaning occurred at week 8, and calves were followed until the 10th week of age. Calves were assigned to one of the three treatment groups in a randomized block design. TREATMENTS (1) control without essential oils supplementation (C); (2) essential oils blend in the milk replacer at 400 mg/kg (MR) and (3) essential oils blend in the milk replacer (200 mg/kg) and starter feed (200 mg/kg) (MRS). From the 2nd week, calves were weighed and body measurements were taken, while concentrate intake and fecal scores were monitored daily. Blood samples were drawn weekly for determination of glucose and β-hydroxybutyrate. Fecal samples were collected weekly and analyzed for lactic acid bacteria and Enterobacteria; and ruminal fluid for determination of pH, short chain fatty acids, ammonia-N and counts of amylolytic and cellulolytic bacteria, and protozoa. Performance, fecal scores and intestines microorganisms were not affected by the essential oils supplementation. Ruminal and blood parameters were also not affected, with the exception the rumen ammonia-N concentration, with higher values when essential oils were supplemented in a combination of milk replacer and starter feed. Most of the evaluated parameters were affected by age of calves, mainly as a response to the increase in concentrate intake as animals' aged. Essential oils are promising substitutes for antibiotics. However, the dose and routes of administration deserve further studies, allowing a better animal performance and health to be achieved.

Abstract
O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho e os parâmetros sanguíneos de bezerros que consumiram colostro bovino fermentado sob condições anaeróbias. Após o nascimento, 18 bezerros da raça Holandês foram alojados em abrigos individuais e passaram a receber 4L da dieta líquida, sucedâneo lácteo ou silagem de colostro, divididos em duas refeições. O consumo de concentrado inicial e o escore fecal foram registrados diariamente, enquanto a pesagem e as colheitas de amostras de sangue para a determinação das concentrações plasmáticas de glicose, nitrogênio ureico, ácidos graxos livres, β-hidroxibutirato e proteínas totais séricas foram realizadas semanalmente. Os animais alimentados com silagem de colostro apresentaram menores consumo de concentrado, ganho de peso diário e peso vivo. Todos os parâmetros sanguíneos avaliados foram afetados pelos tratamentos, exceto a concentração plasmática de proteínas totais. O escore fecal foi afetado pelos tratamentos durante a segunda semana de vida, com animais alimentados com silagem de colostro apresentando fezes anormais e secas. O fornecimento de silagem de colostro como dieta líquida exclusiva não resultou em desempenho animal adequado, não sendo uma boa alternativa de substituto de leite.

Abstract
Leptin is an adipose tissue-derived cytokine plays key roles in the regulation of food intake and energy expenditure. However, regulatory mechanisms of leptin gene expression are not fully elucidated in ruminants that utilize short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), known as volatile fatty acids, as principal energy sources. In this study, we determined effects of SCFA and long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) on leptin expression in bovine adipocytes. Bovine stromal vascular cells isolated from subcutaneous adipose tissue of Holstein cows were cultured to confluence and treated sequentially with dexamethasone and isobutylmethylxanthine for 2 days and insulin and troglitazone for 12 days to achieve full differentiation to adipocytes. The cells started to accumulate lipids 4 days after the onset of treatment, with increased mRNA expression of leptin, as well as aP2, adiponectin, and PPAR-gamma. Removal of fetal calf serum and reduction of glucose in the culture medium of differentiated adipocytes decreased leptin mRNA expression. Subsequent addition of acetate, butyrate, or propionate dose-dependently restored and rather increased leptin expression, while addition of LCFA suppressed it. The stimulatory effect of acetate was abolished by prior treatment of the cells with pertussis toxin and by addition of LCFA. Furthermore, cows fasted for 48h and fed thereafter, elaborate reduced and increased plasma leptin levels, respectively. Thus, these results suggest that plasma leptin levels in cows are inversely controlled at the transcription level by VFA and LCFA, and that the effects of SCFA possibly act through a G protein-coupled receptor for SCFA.

Abstract
Para avaliar a substituição do feno Tifton 85 pelo caroço de algodão como fonte de fibra na dieta foram utilizados 24 bezerros da raça Holandesa, distribuídos em dois grupos. O grupo-feno recebeu feno e concentrado separados, fornecidos à vontade, e o grupo- algodão recebeu caroço de algodão incorporado ao concentrado (13,5%), à vontade. O consumo de alimentos, o peso, as alturas da cernelha e do íleo, as circunferências torácica e abdominal, a concentração de glicose sangüínea, as concentrações de acetato, propionato e butirato, o pH do fluido ruminal e os pesos dos compartimentos do estômago foram mensurados. O consumo de alimentos, o desenvolvimento ponderal dos animais, as concentrações de acetato, propionato e butirato, o pH do fluido ruminal, as concentrações de glicose sangüíneas e o peso dos compartimentos do estômago foram semelhantes entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). À necropsia, não foram observadas alterações sugestivas de intoxicação por gossipol. Concluiu-se que o caroço de algodão substituiu, sem prejuízos, o feno como fonte de fibra na dieta de bezerros.

Abstract
Dairy calf weaning is associated with ketone concentrations that exceed the levels occurring in adults, and weaning represents a potential energy loss that may be mitigated by ionophore supplementation. To assess the effects of weaning and ionophore supplementation on net nutrient flux across portal-drained viscera (PDV) tissues in dairy calves, concentrations of glucose, acetoacetate (ACAC), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids, volatile fatty acids, lactate, pyruvate, insulin, and glucagon and PDV flux rates were determined in Jersey bull calves (n = 19) at 35, 56, 84, and 112 d of age. Calves were randomly assigned at birth to either a commercial pelleted starter without (CON) or with lasalocid (TRT; 83 mg/kg of dry matter). Calves were fed only milk replacer from d 3 to 34 (d 3 to 20 = 454 g/d; d 21 to 34 = 568 g/d). After blood sampling on d 35, calves received replacer (d 35 to 41 = 454 g/d; d 42 to 48 = 227 g/d) and had free access to the CON or TRT starter, and from d 49 to 112 they received CON or TRT ad libitum. Catheters were implanted in the portal vein and in the mesenteric vein and artery between d 21 and 28. Blood flow was measured by continuous infusion of p-aminohippurate into the mesenteric vein. Six serial samples were taken at 30-min intervals from the arterial and portal vein catheters simultaneously. Portal blood flow increased with age but did not differ between CON and TRT calves. Glucose was released preweaning and was extracted postweaning by PDV, but was not affected by ionophore. The portal flux of nonesterified fatty acids was not different from zero during any of the 4 sample ages. Fluxes of ACAC and BHBA in CON and TRT calves went from no measurable flux preweaning to a postweaning PDV release that peaked at d 84, but the d-84 release of ACAC and BHBA was lower in TRT calves. The portal flux of volatile fatty acids increased with age, and PDV release of both butyrate and propionate was lower at d 84 in TRT than in CON calves. However, TRT calves had a greater PDV release of lactate on d 84, partially compensating for the lower release of propionate. Glucagon was greater in CON than in TRT calves at d 84 and could be a response to the elevated ketogenesis observed in CON calves during this period. Changes in the metabolic profile and nutrient flux of transition calves were demonstrated in response to weaning and ionophore supplementation. Inclusion of an ionophore appeared to moderate alimentary output at a postweaning period (d 84) at which ketone concentrations have the potential to exceed the whole animal capacity for utilization.

Abstract
Dairy calf weaning results in blood ketone concentrations in excess of mature rates of use and can result in excretion of ketones in urine representing a loss of energy. Lasalocid is frequently supplemented as an anticoccidial agent in calf starters; however, in mature ruminants it is known to alter molar ratios of ruminal volatile fatty acids (VFA). Effects of weaning transition and postweaning ionophore supplementation on body weight, dry matter (DM) intake, average daily gain (ADG), and blood concentrations of glucose, acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), lactate, pyruvate, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), VFA, insulin, and glucagon were examined using Jersey bull calves (n = 24) over 16 wk. Calves were blocked into groups of 2 according to birth date and weight and randomly assigned to receive either a commercial pelleted starter (control), or the same diet containing lasalocid (TRT; 83 mg/kg of DM). Calves were fed milk replacer from d 3 to 34 (d 3 to 20 = 454 g/d at 12% solids; d 21 to 34 = 568 g/d at 15% solids), from d 35 to 48 calves received both replacer (d 35 to 41 = 454 g/d; d 42 to 38 = 227 g/d) and free access to control or TRT starter, and from d 49 to 112 received ad libitum control or TRT. Body weight and jugular blood metabolite concentrations were measured and recorded weekly. Postweaning DM intake, average daily gain, and feed:gain did not differ between control and TRT calves. Glucose and NEFA concentrations did not differ between control and TRT, but declined with age. Insulin and glucagon concentrations did not differ between control and TRT, but glucagon concentrations increased with weaning. Total VFA significantly increased following introduction of solid feed at d 35 in both groups with an apparent 1-wk lag in TRT VFA increases compared with control. Jugular acetate and butyrate concentrations were greater in control calves than TRT calves during wk 7. Propionate concentrations did not differ between control and TRT at any time following weaning. Blood BHBA concentrations were greater in control than TRT during wk 8 and 9. Thus, consumption of starter supplemented with lasalocid delayed peak acetate and butyrate and lowered peak BHBA concentrations. However, supplementation at concentrations currently recommended for control of coccidiosis did not appear to be sufficient to enhance growth or efficiency during the wk 7 to 16 postweaning interval for this sample size.

Abstract
In a 2 x 2 factorial design, 24 newborn, crossbred (Bos indicus x Bos taurus) calves were distributed in 4 equal groups involving dietary treatments of prestarter diets with (FM) or without fish meal (NFM) in a faunated (F) or ciliate-free (D) ruminal environment to study the ruminal fermentative development in pre-and postweaning periods. Defaunation was achieved by rearing calves in isolation and its effect was studied after first appearance of ciliate protozoa (observed after 8 wk of age) in the faunated animals. Calves were fed colostrum for 24 h and whole milk until weaning at 8 wk of age. Ruminal content samples were collected on d 4, 1 wk, weekly to 8 wk, and then biweekly at 9, 11, and 13 wk of age. The samples were analyzed for fermentation products [pH, total volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia N] and enzyme [carboxymethyl (CM) cellulase, xylanase, beta-glucosidase, alpha-amylase, beta-galactosidase, proteases, and urease] activities. Weekly feed intake increased with age, but was similar in both groups. Ruminal pH declined steadily during 0 to 4 wk of age and then stabilized. The total VFA concentration increased with the age. The ammonia N (mg/dL) concentration increased from 14.9 on d 4 to 32.4 at 4 wk, decreased to 17.6 at 8 wk, and then steadied during the postweaning period. Samples collected on d 4 had no fibrolytic activity. Xylanase (U/dL) appeared first (1 wk) followed by beta-glucosidase (U/dL) and CM cellulase (U/dL), which increased steadily from a low of 4.69, 0.08, and 2.95 to 31.8 (6 wk), 5.92 (7 wk), and 19.8 (8 wk), respectively, and the concentrations showed nonsignificant alterations during postweaning periods. The concentration of alpha-amylase (U/dL) increased from 34.3 on d 4 to 87.2 at 8 wk, and then decreased to 56.6 (13 wk). beta-Galactosidase increased up to 6 wk then decreased to trace level (0.20 U/dL) at 13 wk of age. The concentrations of proteases and urease reached a steady state after 1 wk of age. The effect of diet type on ruminal fermentation products and enzyme parameters was nonsignificant. However, a steady and proportional alteration in both parameters in response to dry feed intake with the advancement of age was seen in all calves. Defaunation increased total VFA (97.3 vs. 75.8 mM/L) and alpha-amylase activity (80.3 vs. 61.4 U/dL) and decreased ammonia N (16.4 vs. 21.1 mg/dL), whereas the effect on other parameters was nonsignificant. Ruminal fermentative changes responded to dry feed intake, but did not differ in response to animal protein in prestarter diet.

Abstract
A texturized calf starter containing 5 (control) or 12% molasses [on a dry matter (DM) basis] was fed to dairy calves to determine effects on intake, growth, blood parameters, and rumen development. Forty-six Holstein calves (26 male and 20 female) were started at 2 +/- 1 d of age and studied for 42 d. Starter DM intake was measured and fecal scoring was conducted daily. Growth and blood parameter measurements were conducted weekly. A subset of 6 male calves (3 per treatment) was euthanized at 4 wk of age, and rumen tissue sampled for rumen epithelial growth measurements. Starter sugar content was significantly increased in the starter containing extra molasses. Postweaning and overall starter DM intake, overall total DM intake, daily heart girth change, and final heart girth were significantly decreased, whereas overall average daily gain tended to decrease when calves received starter containing 12% molasses. However, blood volatile fatty acid concentrations were significantly increased when calves received a starter containing 12% molasses. No significant differences were observed between calves receiving starters containing 5 or 12% molasses for all other variables. The data indicates that adding extra molasses to a texturized calf starter decreases intake and structural growth, possibly causing decreased weight gain, but increases blood volatile fatty acid concentrations and slightly increases ruminal development. However, feed handling and physical prehension problems in addition to the negative influences on calf growth and intake do not support increasing starter molasses content to 12% of the supplement.

Abstract
Neonatal Holstein calves were fed texturized calf starters containing 33% whole (WC), dry-rolled (DRC), roasted-rolled (RC), or steam-flaked (SFC) corn to investigate how corn processing method affects intake, growth, rumen and blood metabolites, and rumen development. In the first experiment, 92 Holstein calves (52 male and 40 female) were started at 2 +/- 1 d of age and studied for 42 d. Starter dry matter (DM) intake was measured and fecal scoring conducted daily. Growth and blood parameter measurements were conducted weekly. A subset of 12 male calves (3/treatment) was euthanized at 4 wk of age and rumen tissue sampled for rumen epithelial development measurements. Experiment 2 consisted of 12 male Holstein calves ruminally cannulated at 7 +/- 1 d of age. Rumen fluid and blood samples were collected during wk 2 to 6. In the first experiment, postweaning and overall starter and total DM intake were significantly higher in calves fed starter with DRC than RC or SFC. Postweaning and overall starter and total DM intake were significantly higher in calves fed starter with WC than SFC. Postweaning average daily gain was significantly greater in calves fed starter with DRC than SFC. Blood volatile fatty acid concentrations were significantly higher in calves fed starter with SFC than in calves fed all other treatments. Papillae length and rumen wall thickness at 4 wk were significantly greater in calves fed starter with SFC than DRC and WC, respectively. In experiment 2, calves fed starter with WC had higher rumen pH and lower rumen volatile fatty acid concentrations than calves fed all other starters. Rumen propionate production was increased in calves receiving starter with SFC; however, rumen butyrate production was higher in calves fed starter with RC. Results indicate that the type of processed corn incorporated into calf starter can influence intake, growth, and rumen parameters in neonatal calves. Calves consuming starter containing RC had similar body weight, feed efficiency, and rumen development but increased structural growth and ruminal butyrate production when compared with the other corn processing treatments.

Abstract
The nutritional and physiological modifications that occur during the weaning period induce adaptations of tissue metabolism in all mammal species. Among the adaptations due to weaning in ruminants, the regulation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, one of the rate-limiting steps of fatty acid utilization by tissues, was still unknown. The present study aimed at comparing LPL activity and gene expression in the heart, seven skeletal muscles and three adipose tissue sites between two groups of seven preruminant (PR) or ruminant (R) calves having a similar age (170 d), similar empty body weight (194 kg) at slaughter, and similar net energy intake from birth onwards. Triacylglycerol content of adipose tissues was 16 % lower in R than in PR calves, This could be partly the result from a lower LPL activity (-57 %, ). LPL mRNA levels were also lower in R calves (-48 % to -68 %, ) suggesting a pretranslational regulation of LPL activity. Activity and mRNA levels of LPL did not differ significantly in the heart and skeletal muscles except in the masseter in which LPL activity and mRNA levels were higher (+50 % and +120 % respectively, ) in the R calves. Regulation of LPL in masseter could be explained by the high contractile activity of this muscle after weaning due to solid food chewing. In conclusion, weaning in the calf affects LPL activity and expression in adipose tissues, but not in skeletal muscles except the masseter.

Abstract
Holstein bull calves were used to examine factors affecting water balance and fecal moisture content in suckling calves given dry feed for 2 wk from 1 wk of age. In Experiment 1 (n = 16), the shift of water balance (decreased urine volume, and increased water retention and fecal water excretion) and elevation of fecal moisture content were greatest when calf starter and Sudangrass hay were fed in addition to liquid milk replacer, compared with calves receiving only milk replacer. Intermediate changes occurred when calves were fed milk replacer and calf starter or milk replacer, calf starter, and rice straw. Water retention was correlated positively with digestible DMI and negatively with urine volume. Fecal water excretion was highly correlated with fecal DM excretion. In Experiment 2 (n = 18), water balance and fecal moisture content during wk 2 were affected by free access to calf starter and hay from wk 1. Urine volume of calves fed dry feed and milk replacer was lower than that of calves fed only milk replacer; however, when water was available in addition to dry feed, urine volume was similar to that of calves fed only milk replacer. Fecal water excretion was highly correlated with water retention rather than with fecal DM excretion, suggesting a close relationship to extracellular fluid volume. Ruminal fermentation would be an important factor affecting both water balance and fecal moisture content in suckling calves given dry feed.

Abstract
Fifty-six Holstein calves were assigned randomly at birth to one of four treatments in a study that evaluated two methods of calf starter delivery (specially designed nipple bottle versus an open container) and weaning age (28 vs. 56 d) on starter intake and growth. Calves were fed 3.8 L of whole milk once daily through nipple bottles until weaning. A pelleted commercial calf starter mix (18.3% crude protein and 19.9% acid detergent fiber) was fed from birth through 56 d. Calves fed starter using the nipple bottle were changed to an open container at weaning. Calves were fed a total mixed diet containing 13.0% crude protein and 25.6% acid detergent fiber from d 57 through 180 for ad libitum intake through a self-feeder. Calves that were weaned at 28 d consumed more calf starter from d 28 to 56 regardless of the method of starter delivery. At 90 d of age, calves that had been weaned at 28 d had similar body weights (BW) and wither heights as did calves that had been weaned at 56 d. Either method of calf starter delivery resulted in similar overall BW, wither height, and average daily gain. Feeding 3.8 L of milk once daily, weaning at 28 d, the use of either method of starter delivery, and feeding a total mixed diet from d 57 through 180 allowed calves to attain BW that exceeded acceptable reported means at 6 mo of age.

Abstract
Newborn Holstein calves (n = 132) were used to evaluate three protein sources (soybean meal and soybeans roasted to an exit temperature of 138 or 146 degrees C) that contained 30, 45, or 52% RUP, respectively. Each was used with either raw corn or corn roasted to an exit temperature of 135 degrees C. Roasting of corn increased starch gelatinization from 34.8 to 118.6 mg of maltose equivalents/g of sample. Six pelleted isonitrogenous calf starters (18% CP) were fed for ad libitum consumption from 0.5 to 8 wk of age. Performance of calves fed soybeans roasted at 146 degrees C plus raw corn was superior to that of calves fed soybean meal plus raw corn but was similar to the performance of calves fed soybean meal plus roasted corn. Roasted corn tended to improve calf performance when used with soybean meal and, to a lesser degree, when used with soybeans roasted at 138 degrees C but depressed performance when used with soybeans roasted at 146 degrees C. Ruminal concentrations of NH3, butyrate, and total VFA and plasma concentrations of urea were higher for calves fed soybean meal. Ruminal pH and lactate, plasma NEFA, and blood BHBA concentrations were unaffected by starter. Performance was superior when calves consumed protein and corn sources with similar degrees of ruminal availability.

Abstract
Holstein calves (n = 48) were used to evaluate whether preweaning feeding management affects postweaning DMI and metabolism after abrupt weaning at 26 d of age. Calves were fed only whole milk until d 19 of age. From d 19 to 26, calves were provided one of three isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets: milk at 15% of d-1 BW, milk at 12% of d-1 BW plus a grain-based supplement added to the pail, or milk at 12% of d-1 BW and drenched (force-fed) with the supplement. After weaning, calves were offered a low or high energy (1.7 or 5.8% ether extract) starter. From d 26 to 36, starter intake was similar between calves fed the supplement in the pail and those fed only milk but lower than for calves drenched with supplement. Plasma NEFA increased threefold from d 26 to 27, and calves fed only milk had higher NEFA than drenched calves. From d 26 to 42, plasma VFA of drenched calves were higher than those fed only milk. Except for an increase in plasma NEFA at d 36 and 42, high energy starter did not affect any variable. Preweaning drenching of calves stimulated postweaning adaptation to dry diets. Intake postweaning appears to depend more on physiological adaptation to dry diets than a preweaning feeding management.

Abstract
Sodium bicarbonate and yeast culture effects on ruminal fermentation, intake, and growth were evaluated in young calves. In trail 1, nine ruminally cannulated Holstein calves averaging 12 wk of age were fed control starter (17% CP) or starters containing 3% sodium bicarbonate or .2% yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) culture in a 3 x 3 Latin square. Calves were fed for ad libitum consumption for 10 d and then at 85% of ad libitum intake to d 14. Ruminal fluid taken at 0 h postfeeding tended to have higher pH and a greater proportion of acetate when calves were fed sodium bicarbonate, but other ruminal and blood parameters did not differ among treatments. By 4 h after feeding, ruminal VFA had increased to 120.7 mM, molar proportions of individual acids were altered, and blood ketones and VFA increased in treated calves. In trial 2, 42 Jersey calves were fed experimental starters for ad libitum consumption during a 12-wk study. Calves began the study at 3 to 5 d of age. There were no significant effects of yeast culture or sodium bicarbonate on DMI or intake of starter, rates of gain, or feed efficiency. Plasma urea N was reduced when sodium bicarbonate was fed. Both sodium bicarbonate and yeast culture affected blood and ruminal metabolites when calves were limit-fed but did not influence intake or daily gain when calves were fed for ad libitum consumption.

Abstract
The concentration of acetate in blood plasma was measured by both a gas-liquid chromatographic method and an enzymatic method using acetyl-CoA synthetase. When acetate was measured enzymatically without previous protein precipitation, the apparent concentration was lower than when the concentration measured by either a gas-chromatographic method or by the enzymatic method after protein precipitation with perchloric acid and neutralization.

Abstract
Twelve Holstein bull calves were ruminally cannulated at 5 d of age and assigned to 0 or 1 mg of lasalocid/kg of BW daily, administered postruminally via milk replacer or into the ruminal cannula. Calves were fed milk replacer for 8 wk and calf starter for 12 wk. Lasalocid administration was terminated at weaning in calves fed lasalocid in milk replacer. Ruminal pH tended to be higher in calves fed lasalocid ruminally than in calves on control treatment and averaged 5.9 and 5.6 and 5.4 and 5.1 during wk 1 to 8 and 9 to 12, respectively. Molar proportion of ruminal butyrate tended to be lower when lasalocid was added to the rumen, particularly after weaning. Blood beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate were lower when lasalocid was administered into the rumen after weaning and averaged .897 and .646 and .026 and .015 mM in calves on control and ruminal treatments, respectively. No effects of lasalocid administered via the milk replacer were observed, except for plasma NEFA, which were reduced postweaning. These data suggest that lasalocid reduces blood beta-hydroxybutyrate by changes in ruminal fermentation and subsequent metabolism of butyrate by ruminal epithelium.
