Effect of print orientation on the dimensional accuracy and cost-effectiveness of rapid-prototyped dental models using a PolyJet photopolymerization printer: An in vitro study

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of the dental models 3D printed in vertical and horizontal orientation as compared to the conventional plaster and digital models.

METHODS

This study involved scanning 50 plaster models using Maestro 3D Desktop Scanner (AGE Solutions, Pisa, Italy). The STL file obtained from the scanner was processed and three-dimensionally (3D) printed in the horizontal and vertical orientation using a PolyJet 3D printer (Objet 30 prime, Stratasys Ltd., Eden Prairie, Minnesota, United States). The accuracy of the rapid-prototyped (3D printed) models was measured from the pre-determined landmarks and was compared among the groups. In addition, determining the cost-effectiveness of the 3D printed models in different orientations was based on the amount of material (resin) utilized during the 3D printing process. ANOVA was used to determine the accuracy of the models.

RESULTS

There were statistically insignificant differences (P>0.05) among rapid-prototyped models (≤0.06mm) compared to plaster models and digital models for the linear measurements made in all three planes of space. The dental models printed in the horizontal orientation were found to be more cost-effective than those printed in a vertical orientation in terms of the amount of material (resin) utilized and printing time during the 3D printing process.

CONCLUSIONS

The accuracy of rapid-prototyped models 3D printed in the horizontal and vertical orientations was comparable to the plaster models and digital models for clinical applications. Horizontally printed models were more cost-effective than vertically printed models.

The impact of print orientation and graphene nanoplatelets on biaxial flexural strength and cytotoxicity of a 3D printable resin for occlusal splints

OBJECTIVES

3D printing found its way into various medical applications and could be particularly beneficial for dentistry. Currently, materials for 3D printing of occlusal splints lack mechanical strength compared to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) used for standard milling of occlusal splints. It is known that print orientation and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) can increase biaxial strength in a variety of materials. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess if adjustment of print orientation and addition of GNP improve biaxial strength and if they affect cytotoxicity of a 3D printable resin for occlusal splints.

METHODS

Specimens were printed vertically and horizontally with a stereolithography (SLA) printer and multilayered GNP powder was added to the resin at different concentrations. Printed specimens were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, optical profilometer analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Biaxial strength was evaluated by biaxial flexural testing. Cytotoxicity of specimens on L929 and gingival stromal cells (GSC) was assessed by the toxdent test, the resazurin-based toxicity assay and live-dead staining.

RESULTS

Horizontally printed specimens showed significantly higher biaxial strength and lower deformation. GNP did not improve biaxial strength and material deformation of 3D-printed resins. None of the specimens were cytotoxic to L929 cells or GSC.

SIGNIFICANCE

Print orientation in SLA printing has a significant impact on biaxial strength and material deformation. 3D printable materials can reach comparable or even improved biaxial strength compared to PMMA when using the optimal print orientation while GNP has no beneficial effects on the biaxial strength of resins for 3D printing of occlusal splints.

An in vitro evaluation of bond strength and failure behavior between 3D-printed cobalt-chromium alloy and different types of denture base resins

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength and failure behavior between cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy and different types of denture base resins (DBRs) over time.

METHODS

Seventy-two disk-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were manufactured using a selective laser melting technology-based metal 3D printer. Three types of DBRs were used: heat-cure (HEA group), cold-cure (COL group), and 3D-printable (TDP group) DBRs (n = 12 per group). Each DBR specimen was fabricated as a 5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm cube model. The specimens of the TDP group were manufactured using a digital light processing technology-based 3D printer. Half of the DBRs were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h, whereas the remaining half underwent thermocycling for 10,000 cycles. Shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine; failure modes were observed, and metal surfaces were evaluated using energy dispersive spectrometry.

RESULTS

The shear bond strength did not differ between the DBR types within the non-thermocycled groups. Contrarily, the TDP group exhibited inferior strength compared to the HEA group (P = 0.008) after thermocycling. All three types of DBRs exhibited a significant decrease in the shear bond strength and an increased tendency toward adhesive failure after thermocycling.

CONCLUSIONS

The bond strength between 3D-printable DBRs and Co-Cr alloy was comparable to that of heat-and cold-cure DBRs before thermocycling. However, it exhibited a considerable weakening in comparison to heat-cure DBRs after simulated short-term use.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The application of 3D-printable DBR in metal framework-incorporated removable partial dentures may be feasible during the early phase of the treatment. However, its application is currently limited because the bond strength between the 3D-printable DBR and metal may weaken after short-term use. Further studies on methods to increase the bond strength between these heterogeneous materials are required.

Design and optimization of a novel patient-specific subperiosteal implant additively manufactured in yttria-stabilized zirconia

OBJECTIVE

To design a patient-specific subperiosteal implant for a severely atrophic maxillary ridge using yttria-stabilized additively manufactured zirconia (3YSZ) and evaluate its material properties by applying topology optimization (TO) to replace bulk material with a lattice structure.

MATERIALS

A contrast-based segmented skull model from anonymized computed tomography data of a patient was used for the initial anatomical design of the implant for the atrophic maxillary ridge. The implant underwent finite element analysis (FEA) and TO under different occlusal load-bearing conditions. The resulting implant designs, in bulk material and lattice, were evaluated via in-silico tensile tests and 3D printed.

RESULTS

The workflow produced two patient-specific subperiosteal designs: a) an anatomically precise bulk implant, b) a TO lattice implant. In-silico tensile tests revealed that the Young's modulus of yttria-stabilized zirconia is 205 GPa for the bulk material and 83.3 GPa for the lattice. Maximum principal stresses in the implant were 61.14 MPa in bulk material and 278.63 MPa in lattice, both tolerable, indicating the redesigned implant can withstand occlusal forces of 125-250 N per abutment. Furthermore, TO achieved a 13.10 % mass reduction and 208.71 % increased surface area, suggesting improved osteointegration potential.

SIGNIFICANCE

The study demonstrates the planning and optimization of ceramic implant topology. A further iteration of the implant was successfully implanted in a patient-named use case, employing the same fabrication process and parameters.

Additive manufacturing of dental ceramics in prosthodontics: The status quo and the future

PURPOSE

This review aims to summarize the available technologies, material categories, and prosthodontic applications of additive manufacturing (AM) dental ceramics, evaluate the achievable accuracy and mechanical properties in comparison with current mainstream computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) subtractive manufacturing (SM) methods, and discuss future prospects and directions.

STUDY SELECTION

This paper is based on the latest reviews, state-of-the-art research, and existing ISO standards on AM technologies and prosthodontic applications of dental ceramics. PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect were amongst the sources searched for narrative reviews.

RESULTS

Relatively few AM technologies are available and their applications are limited to crowns and fixed partial dentures. Although the accuracy and strength of AM dental ceramics are comparable to those of SM, they have the limitations of relatively inferior curved surface accuracy and low strength reliability. Furthermore, functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM), a potential direction for AM, enables the realization of biomimetic structures, such as natural teeth; however, specific studies are currently lacking.

CONCLUSIONS

AM dental ceramics are not sufficiently developed for large-scale clinical applications. However, with additional research, it may be possible for AM to replace SM as the mainstream manufacturing technology for ceramic restorations.

Trends and future perspectives of 3D printing in prosthodontics

The three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has led to transformative shift in prosthodontics. This review summarizes the evolution, processing techniques, materials, integration of digital plan, challenges, clinical applications and future directions of 3D printing in prosthodontics. It appraises from the launch of 3D printing to its current applications in prosthodontics. The convergence of printing technology with digital dentistry has facilitated the creation of accurate, customized prostheses, redefining treatment planning, design, and manufacturing processes. The progression of this technology is from generating models to prosthesis like-fixed dental prosthesis (FDP), implants, and splints. Additionally, it exhibits more wide capabilities. The exploration of materials for 3D printing provides various options like polymers, ceramics, metals, and hybrids, each with distinctive properties that are applicable to different clinical scenarios. The combination of 3D-printing technology and digital workflow simplifies the processes of data transfer, computer-aided design (CAD) design to fabrication, decreasing errors and chairside time. The clinical benefits include enhanced accuracy, comfort, conservative lab procedures, and economics. Challenges in the technology involve significant aspects like initial investment, material availability, and skill requirements. Future trends emphasize on research for improved materials, bioprinting integration, artificial intelligence (AI) application, regularization efforts to ensure safe and common use of the technology. 3D printing offers promise in prosthodontics, addressing challenges through research. The material improvements will promote its broader adoption and revolutionize the future of dental rehabilitation.

An organotypic model of oral mucosa cells for the biological assessment of 3D printed resins for interim restorations

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Three-dimensionally (3D) printed resins have become popular as a new class of materials for making interim restorations. However, little is known about how the fabrication parameters can influence biological compatibility with oral tissues.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the postpolymerization time on the cytotoxicity of resins for printing interim restorations by using a 3D organotypic model of the oral mucosa.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Cylindrical specimens were prepared with conventional acrylic resin (AR), computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) resin (CC), composite resin (CR), and 2 resins for 3D printing (3DP) marketed as being biocompatible. The 3DPs were submitted to postpolymerization in an ultraviolet (UV) light chamber for 1, 10, or 20 minutes (90 W, 405 nm). Standard specimens of the materials were incubated for 1, 3, and 7 days in close contact with an organotypic model of keratinocytes (NOK-Si) in coculture with gingival fibroblasts (HGF) in a 3D collagen matrix, or directly with 3D HGF cultures. Then, the viability (Live/Dead n=2) and metabolism (Alamar Blue n=6) of the cells were assessed. Spectral scanning of the culture medium was performed to detect released components (n=6) and assessed statistically with ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test (α=.05).

RESULTS

Severe reduction of metabolism (>70%) and viability of keratinocytes occurred for 3DP resin postpolymerized for 1 minute in all periods of analysis in a time-dependent manner. The decrease in cell metabolism and viability was moderate for the 3D culture of HGFs in both experimental models, correlated with the intense presence of resin components in the culture medium. The resins postpolymerized for 10 and 20 minutes promoted a mild-moderate cytotoxic effect in the period of 1 day, similar to AR. However, recovery of cell viability occurred at the 7-day incubation period. The 3DP resins submitted to postpolymerization for 20 minutes showed a pattern similar to that of CR and CC at the end of the experiment.

CONCLUSIONS

The cytotoxic potential of the tested 3DP resins on oral mucosa cells was influenced by postprinting processing, which seemed to have been related with the quantity of residual components leached.

Interdisciplinary all-on-four® concept for mandibular jaw in dental education - do students benefit from individual 3d printed models from real patient cases?

PURPOSE

Digitalization is assuming increasing significance in dental education, as dental students are increasingly exposed to digital implant planning and contemporary technologies such as 3D printing. In this study, we present a cohort analysis aimed at assessing the potential benefits derived from the utilization of 3D prints to seamlessly translate planned procedures into real-life applications.

METHODS

21 dental students participated in a virtual planning and hands-on course across two cohorts (C1: n = 10, C2: n = 11). The virtual implant planning phase involved the placement of four implants on an atrophic lower jaw model. Subsequently, Cohort 1 (C1) executed the implantation procedure on a prefabricated hands-on model, while Cohort 2 (C2) engaged with 3D prints representing their individual implant planning during the hands-on session. Subjective assessments of knowledge, skills, and the perceived utility of 3D prints were conducted through pre- and post-course questionnaires, utilizing a 5-point scale.

RESULTS

In the subjective evaluation, 17 out of 21 participants expressed a positive appraisal of the use of personalized models. Notably, there was no statistically significant improvement in overall knowledge scores; however, there was a discernible increase of 0.5 points in the ratings related to perceived expertise and procedural abilities.

CONCLUSION

While there was a notable increase in the subjective ratings of knowledge and abilities, no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups. The consensus among dental students is that individually planned and printed implant models serve as a valuable and effective tool in hands-on courses.

Effect of Different Post-Curing Methods on the Degree of Conversion of 3D-Printed Resin for Models in Dentistry

The aim was to investigate the effects of different post-curing units on the chemical properties (degree of conversion) of 3D-printed resins for producing models in dentistry. The goal is to determine whether less-expensive post-curing units can be a viable alternative to the manufacturer's recommended units. Forty-five samples were fabricated with an LCD printer (Phrozen Sonic Mini, Phrozen 3D, Hsinchu City, Taiwan) using MSLA Dental Modeling Resin (Apply Lab Work, Torrance, CA, USA). These samples were divided randomly into four different groups for post-curing using four distinct curing units: Phrozen Cure V2 (Phrozen 3D, Hsinchu City, Taiwan), a commercial acrylic nail UV LED curing unit (SUNUV, Shenzhen, China), a homemade curing unit created from a readily available UV LED light produced (Shenzhen, China), and the Triad® 2000™ tungsten halogen light source (Dentsply Sirona, York, PA, USA). The degree of conversion was measured with FTIR spectroscopy using a Nicolet 6700 FTIR Spectrometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Phrozen Cure V2 had the highest overall mean degree of conversion (69.6% with a 45 min curing time). The Triad® 2000 VLC Curing Unit had the lowest mean degree of conversion value at the 15 min interval (66.2%) and the lowest mean degree of conversion at the 45 min interval with the homemade curing unit (68.2%). The type of light-curing unit did not yield statistically significant differences in the degree of conversion values. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of conversion values between the 15 min and 45 min curing intervals. When comparing individual light-curing units, there was a statistically significant difference in the degree of conversion for the post-curing units between the 15 min and 45 min curing time (p = 0.029).

Fracture toughness, work of fracture, flexural strength and elastic modulus of 3D-printed denture base resins in two measurement environments after artificial aging

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the fracture toughness (KIC), work of fracture (WOF), flexural strength (FS) and elastic modulus (E) of four additively manufactured denture base resins in two different measurement environments after artificial aging.

METHODS

Rectangular specimens in two different dimensions (n = 480) were 3D-printed with four denture base resins: Denture 3D+ (DEN; NextDent), Fotodent Denture (FOT; Dreve ProDiMed), Freeprint Denture (FRE; Detax), V-Print dentbase (VPR; VOCO)). KIC, WOF, FS and E were measured after (1) water-storage (37 °C; KIC = 7 d; FS = 50 h); (2) water-storage + hydrothermal-aging (20 min, 0.2 MPa, 134 °C); (3) water storage + thermocycling (10,000 cycles, 5/55 °C) in two measurement environments (i) air-23 °C and (ii) water-37 °C. For FS, fracture types were classified, and relative frequencies determined. Univariate ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman's correlation were calculated (p < 0.05, SPSS V.27.0). Weibull modulus (m) was calculated using the maximum likelihood estimation method.

RESULTS

DEN showed the highest KIC (5/6 groups), WOF and highest corresponding m (1/6 groups), while FRE presented the highest FS (2/6 groups) and E values. Hydrothermal-aging and thermocycling reduced KIC and WOF, FS and E, and the number of FS fracture pieces. For 6/8 groups, hydrothermal aging resulted in lower FS than thermocycling. Measurement in air-23 °C led to higher FS for 7/12 groups and a more brittle fracture behavior. A positive correlation between KIC and FS was observed.

SIGNIFICANCE

With measurements in air-23 °C resulting in higher FS than reported in water-37 °C, the measurement environment should be adapted to the clinical situation to allow valid predictions on the mechanical behavior of denture base resins when in situ.

Status of Polymer Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)-Based Three-Dimensional Printing (3DP) in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing (3DP) is arguably a versatile and more efficient way for the production of solid dosage forms such as tablets. Of the various 3DP technologies currently available, fused deposition modeling (FDM) includes unique characteristics that offer a range of options in the production of various types of tablets. For example, amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs), enteric-coated tablets or poly pills can be produced using an appropriate drug/polymer combination during FDM 3DP. The technology offers the possibility of evolving personalized medicines into cost-effective production schemes at pharmacies and hospital dispensaries. In this review, we highlight key FDM features that may be exploited for the production of tablets and improvement of therapy, with emphasis on gastrointestinal delivery. We also highlight current constraints that must be surmounted to visualize the deployment of this technology in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Advancements in Clear Aligner Fabrication: A Comprehensive Review of Direct-3D Printing Technologies

Clear aligners have revolutionized orthodontic treatment by offering an esthetically driven treatment modality to patients of all ages. Over the past two decades, aligners have been used to treat malocclusions in millions of patients worldwide. The inception of aligner therapy goes back to the 1940s, yet the protocols to fabricate aligners have been continuously evolved. CAD/CAM driven protocol was the latest approach which drastically changed the scalability of aligner fabrication-i.e., aligner mass production manufacturing. 3D printing technology has been adopted in various sectors including dentistry mostly because of the ability to create complex geometric structures at high accuracy while reducing labor and material costs-for the most part. The integration of 3D printing in dentistry has been across, starting in orthodontics and oral surgery and expanding in periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral implantology. Continuous progress in material development has led to improved mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and overall quality of aligners. Consequently, aligners have become less invasive, more cost-effective, and deliver outcomes comparable to existing treatment options. The promise of 3D printed aligners lies in their ability to treat malocclusions effectively while providing esthetic benefits to patients by remaining virtually invisible throughout the treatment process. Herein, this review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of studies regarding direct-3D printing of clear aligners up to the present, outlining all essential properties required in 3D-printed clear aligners and the challenges that need to be addressed. Additionally, the review proposes implementation methods to further enhance the effectiveness of the treatment outcome.

Flexural strength, flexural modulus and microhardness of milled vs. fused deposition modeling printed Zirconia; effect of conventional vs. speed sintering

BACKGROUND

Various methods can be used for creating zirconia dental restorations, including 3-dimensional (3D) printing and computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milling. The fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing method for zirconia presents numerous advantages, albeit research on the mechanical properties of these materials and resultant restorations remains scarce. Such developments are undeniably intriguing and warrant further investigation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the sintering firing cycle (Conventional vs. Speed sintering) on the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Vickers Microhardness of milled vs. FDM printed zirconia.

METHODS

A total of 60 bars (2 × 5 × 27 mm) were fabricated for flexural strength testing, along with 40 discs (12 × 1.5 mm) for Vickers microhardness testing. Half of the specimens underwent conventional sintering, while the other half underwent a speed sintering cycle. The flexural strength and modulus were determined by a three-point bending test in a universal testing machine. The microhardness of the specimens was evaluated using a Vickers microhardness tester. Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA test with a post-hoc Tukey test (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

CAD/CAM milled zirconia had significantly higher flexural strength and modulus than FDM-printed zirconia. The sintering process did not significantly affect the flexural strength or modulus of milled or FDM-printed zirconia. The milled speed sintering group had significantly higher values in the Vickers microhardness test compared to the other groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The mechanical properties of FDM-printed zirconia specimens were not found to be comparable to those of milled zirconia. Speed sintering cycle may produce milled zirconia restorations with similar flexural strength and modulus to conventional sintering, and even higher Vickers Microhardness values.

Influence of hydrothermal aging on the shear bond strength of 3D printed denture-base resin to different relining materials

OBJECTIVES

This study evaluated the repairability of three-dimensional printed (3DP) denture bases based on different conventional relining materials and aging.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The groups for surface characterization (surface-roughness and contact-angle measurements) were divided based on the denture base and surface treatment. Shear bond strength test and failure-mode analysis were conducted by a combination of three variables: denture base, relining materials, and hydrothermal aging (HA). The initial characterization involved quantifying the surface roughness (n = 10) and contact angle (n = 10) of denture base specimens with and without sandblasting (SB) treatment. Four relining materials (Kooliner [K], Vertex Self-Curing [V], Tokuyama Rebase II (Normal) [T], and Ufi Gel Hard [U]) were applied to 3DP, heat-cured (HC), and self-cured (SC) denture-base resin specimens. Shear bond strength (n = 15) and failure-mode analyses (n = 15) were performed before and after HA, along with evaluations of the fractured surfaces (n = 4). Statistical analyses were performed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for surface characterization, and a three-way ANOVA was conducted for shear bond strength.

RESULTS

The surface roughness peaked in HC groups and increased after SB. The 3DP group displayed significantly lower contact angles, which increased after treatment, similar to the surface roughness. The shear bond strength was significantly lower for 3DP and HC denture bases than for SC denture bases, and peaked for U at 10.65 ± 1.88 MPa (mean ± SD). HA decreased the shear bond strength relative to untreated samples. Furthermore, 3DP, HC, and SC mainly showed mixed or cohesive failures with V, T, and U. K, on the other hand, trended toward adhesive failures when bonded with HC and SC.

CONCLUSION

This study has validated the repairability of 3DP dentures through relining them with common materials used in clinical practice. The repairability of the 3DP denture base was on par with that of conventional materials, but it decreased after aging. Notably, U, which had a postadhesive application, proved to be the most effective material for repairing 3DP dentures.

Materials and Applications of 3D Printing Technology in Dentistry: An Overview

PURPOSE

This narrative review aims to provide an overview of the mechanisms of 3D printing, the dental materials relevant to each mechanism, and the possible applications of these materials within different areas of dentistry.

METHODS

Subtopics within 3D printing technology in dentistry were identified and divided among five reviewers. Electronic searches of the Medline (PubMed) database were performed with the following search keywords: 3D printing, digital light processing, stereolithography, digital dentistry, dental materials, and a combination of the keywords. For this review, only studies or review papers investigating 3D printing technology for dental or medical applications were included. Due to the nature of this review, no formal evidence-based quality assessment was performed, and the search was limited to the English language without further restrictions.

RESULTS

A total of 64 articles were included. The significant applications, applied materials, limitations, and future directions of 3D printing technology were reviewed. Subtopics include the chronological evolution of 3D printing technology, the mechanisms of 3D printing technologies along with different printable materials with unique biomechanical properties, and the wide range of applications for 3D printing in dentistry.

CONCLUSIONS

This review article gives an overview of the history and evolution of 3D printing technology, as well as its associated advantages and disadvantages. Current 3D printing technologies include stereolithography, digital light processing, fused deposition modeling, selective laser sintering/melting, photopolymer jetting, powder binder, and 3D laser bioprinting. The main categories of 3D printing materials are polymers, metals, and ceramics. Despite limitations in printing accuracy and quality, 3D printing technology is now able to offer us a wide variety of potential applications in different fields of dentistry, including prosthodontics, implantology, oral and maxillofacial, orthodontics, endodontics, and periodontics. Understanding the existing spectrum of 3D printing applications in dentistry will serve to further expand its use in the dental field. Three-dimensional printing technology has brought about a paradigm shift in the delivery of clinical care in medicine and dentistry. The clinical use of 3D printing has created versatile applications which streamline our digital workflow. Technological advancements have also paved the way for the integration of new dental materials into dentistry.

A survey regarding the organizational aspects and quality systems of in-house 3D printing in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Germany

PURPOSE

The aim of the study was to get a cross-sectional overview of the current status of specific organizational procedures, quality control systems, and standard operating procedures for the use of three-dimensional (3D) printing to assist in-house workflow using additive manufacturing in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) in Germany.

METHODS

An online questionnaire including dynamic components containing 16-29 questions regarding specific organizational aspects, process workflows, quality controls, documentation, and the respective backgrounds in 3D printing was sent to OMF surgeons in university and non-university hospitals as well as private practices with and without inpatient treatment facilities. Participants were recruited from a former study population regarding 3D printing; all participants owned a 3D printer and were registered with the German Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

RESULTS

Sixty-seven participants answered the questionnaires. Of those, 20 participants ran a 3D printer in-unit. Quality assurance measures were performed by 13 participants and underlying processes by 8 participants, respectively. Standard operating procedures regarding computer-aided design and manufacturing, post-processing, use, or storage of printed goods were non-existent in most printing units. Data segmentation as well as computer-aided design and manufacturing were conducted by a medical doctor in most cases (n = 19, n = 18, n = 8, respectively). Most participants (n = 8) stated that "medical device regulations did not have any influence yet, but an adaptation of the processes is planned for the future."

CONCLUSION

The findings demonstrated significant differences in 3D printing management in OMFS, especially concerning process workflows, quality control, and documentation. Considering the ever-increasing regulations for medical devices, there might be a necessity for standardized 3D printing recommendations and regulations in OMFS.

Comparative evaluation of 3D-printed and conventional implants in vivo: a quantitative microcomputed tomographic and histomorphometric analysis

In recent years, 3D-printing technology to fabricate dental implants has garnered widespread attention due to its patient-specific customizability and cost-effectiveness. This preclinical animal study analyzed the radiographic and histomorphometric outcomes of 3D-printed implants (3DIs) placed immediately after extraction and compared them to conventional implants (CIs). 3DIs and CIs of the same dimensions placed immediately were analyzed at 2, 6, and 12 weeks. The micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis revealed statistically significant differences at 2 weeks in favor of 3DIs over the CIs in terms of bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV), bone surface/bone volume (BS/BV), trabecular bone pattern factor (Tb.Pf), and structure model index (SMI). At 2 weeks, the mean bone-to-implant contact (BIC) of the 3DIs was greater than that of the CIs; the mean bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO) and the number of Haversian canals of the 3DIs showed no statistically significant differences compared to CIs at 2 weeks. At 6 and 12 weeks, there were no statistically significant differences between the 3DIs and CIs in any parameters. Within limitations, in the early stage of extraction socket healing, the 3DIs demonstrated a higher BIC than the CIs, presenting that 3DIs may be a potential option for immediate placement to enhance osseointegration.

Quintessential commence of three-dimensional printing in periodontal regeneration-A review

The prime focus of regenerative periodontal therapy is to reconstruct or regenerate the lost periodontium, including both hard and soft tissues. Over the years, periodontics has witnessed different regenerative modalities, such as bone grafts, guided tissue membranes, growth factors, stem cell technology, 3D printing, etc. 3D printing is a newly emerging manufacturing technology that finds applications in diverse fields, including aerospace, defense, art and design, medical and dental field. Originally developed for non-biological applications, 3D printing has undergone modifications to print biocompatible materials and living cells to minimize any potential compromise on cell viability. Thus, the utilisation of 3D printing in the regeneration of lost periodontal tissues represents a novel approach that facilitates optimal cell interactions and promotes the successful regeneration of biological tissues.

Comparing the physical and mechanical properties of different biocompatible three-dimensional resin materials in possible use of dental appliances: An in vitro study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to assess the colour stability, water sorption, microhardness and water contact angle of two different 3D printing systems (SLA and DLP) in a possible use of producing paediatric and orthodontic dental appliances.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

SLA and DLP printer systems produced a total of 160 disk samples with a diameter of 15.00 mm and a height of 2.00 mm. Colour changes of 64 samples were assessed in distilled water, coffee, coke and cherry juice and Vicker's microhardness tests were also conducted. Solubility and water sorption were held following the water contact angle assessment. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software. Mann-Whitney-U test, Friedman test and Bonferroni post hoc Multiple Comparison Test were performed.

RESULTS

In DLP and SLA groups, coffee had a statistically significant colouring effect regarding the assessment periods (P = .001, 20.09 ± 2.96, 22.09 ± 3.51, respectively), and the discolouration effect of coffee was higher in the SLA group at all endpoints (P < .05). At the same time, DLP was more affected by coke solution in T0-T1 and T0-T7 (P < .05). The values of water sorption showed statistically significant differences in the group of DLP compared to the SLA (P = .01, 121.11 ± 10.54, 92.78 ± 8.70, respectively). No statistical significance was detected between the solubility values and water contact angle of SLA and DLP groups. The SLA printer's microhardness values revealed statistically significantly higher values than the DLP group (P = .001) and a decrease was detected following the immersion period in the microhardness values of the SLA group (P = .022).

CONCLUSION

The compared groups exposed to staining solutions revealed colour changes above the clinically acceptable values at all periods (ΔE00  = 2.25).

Medical 3D printing with polyjet technology: effect of material type and printing orientation on printability, surface structure and cytotoxicity

Due to its high printing resolution and ability to print multiple materials simultaneously, inkjet technology has found wide application in medicine. However, the biological safety of 3D-printed objects is not always guaranteed due to residues of uncured resins or support materials and must therefore be verified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of standard assessment methods for determining the quality and properties of polyjet-printed scaffolds in terms of their dimensional accuracy, surface topography, and cytotoxic potential.Standardized 3D-printed samples were produced in two printing orientations (horizontal or vertical). Printing accuracy and surface roughness was assessed by size measurements, VR-5200 3D optical profilometer dimensional analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity tests were performed with a representative cell line (L929) in a comparative laboratory study. Individual experiments were performed with primary cells from clinically relevant tissues and with a Toxdent cytotoxicity assay.Dimensional measurements of printed discs indicated high print accuracy and reproducibility. Print accuracy was highest when specimens were printed in horizontal direction. In all cytotoxicity tests, the estimated mean cell viability was well above 70% (p < 0.0001) regardless of material and printing direction, confirming the low cytotoxicity of the final 3D-printed objects.

CBCT-Based Design of Patient-Specific 3D Bone Grafts for Periodontal Regeneration

The purpose of this article is to define and implement a methodology for the 3D design of customized patient-specific scaffolds (bone grafts) for the regeneration of periodontal tissues. The prerequisite of the proposed workflow is the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the periodontal defect, i.e., the 3D model of the hard tissues (alveolar bone and teeth) around the periodontal damage, which is proposed to be generated via a segmentation and 3D editing methodology using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data. Two types of methodologies for 3D periodontal scaffold (graft) design are described: (i) The methodology of designing periodontal defect customized block grafts and (ii) the methodology of designing extraction socket preservation customized grafts. The application of the proposed methodology for the generation of a 3D model of the hard tissues around periodontal defects of a patient using a CBCT scan and the 3D design of the two aforementioned types of scaffolds for personalized periodontal regenerative treatment shows promising results. The outputs of this work will be used as the basis for the 3D printing of bioabsorbable scaffolds of personalized treatment against periodontitis, which will simultaneously be used as sustained-release drug carriers.

Assessment of knowledge, awareness and practices toward the use of 3D printing among dental laboratory technicians in Karnataka, India: A cross-sectional study

With the use of CAD/CAM technology and rapid prototyping, the opportunities for digitisation and technology are unlimited. 3D printing is going to revolutionise traditional teaching and laboratory methods with rapid progress of new materials, printing technology and machines. Given the large number of options available, one must keep up with the current and emerging technology in order to make benefit of the same. The aim of the study is to assess dental laboratory technicians' knowledge, understanding and practices related the use of 3D printing in dentistry in India.

Methods

From November 2021 to January 2022, a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was done among dental laboratory technicians in India. Dental technicians were given access to a self-explanatory questionnaire via Google forms link consisting of 12 questions that evaluated their knowledge, awareness and practices regarding 3D printing. The CHERRIES protocol for presenting the findings of the survey was followed. Chi-square test and independent t-test was used for statistical analysis by SPSS version 20.0.

Results

A total of 191 responses were obtained after the questionnaire was circulated to 220 technicians. 171 dental technicians (89.53%) were acquainted of the usage of 3D printing in dentistry.169 (88.48%) Dental technicians preferred 3D printing to traditional procedures. Majority of dental technicians indicated they want to include the 3D printing into their regular work practices and believe digital technology will enhance our profession.

Conclusion

The level of awareness of digital dentistry and 3D printing among the participants is acceptable. Dental technicians at private laboratory showed better understanding about 3D printing as compared to technicians working at dental colleges nevertheless, dental education programmes, webinars and hands-on training should be undertaken that will enhance their expertise of 3D printing.

Challenges and Future Perspectives for Additively Manufactured Polylactic Acid Using Fused Filament Fabrication in Dentistry

Additive manufacturing (AM), which is also called rapid prototyping/3D printing/layered manufacturing, can be considered as a rapid conversion between digital and physical models. One of the most used materials in AM is polylactic acid (PLA), which has advantageous material properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and nontoxicity. For many medical applications, it is considered as a leading biomaterial. In dentistry, in addition to its uses in dental models (education, teaching, simulation needs), it can be used for therapeutic objectives and tissue engineering. The fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique, also called fused deposition modeling (FDM), is widely used as an AM technique to perform complex and functional geometries directly from CAD files. In this review, the objective was to present the different challenges and future perspectives of this additively manufactured material by using FFF in dentistry areas. Some suggestions for future directions to extend to more dental applications (support structures, lattice structures, etc.) and to consider more criteria (sustainability, uncertainty etc.) will be discussed. Advanced studies such as machine learning (ML) techniques will be suggested to reduce the failure cases when using the additively manufactured PLA by FFF in dentistry.

Accuracy of five different 3D printing workflows for dental models comparing industrial and dental desktop printers

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy, in terms of trueness and precision, of printed models using five different industrial and dental desktop 3D printers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Full-arch digital models with scanbodies of 15 patients were printed with five different 3D printers. The industrial printers were 3D system Project MJP2500 (3DS) and Objet30 OrthoDesk (Obj). The dental desktop printers were NextDent 5100 (ND), Formlabs Form 2 (FL) and Rapidshape D30 (RS). A total of 225 printed models were analysed. The printed models were digitized and compared with the reference cast model using the Control X software (Geomagic). The descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA with the post hoc Tukey test were performed (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The one-way ANOVA for the trueness and precision of the printed model presented the best results for the 3DS, followed by ND, Obj, FL and RS (P < 0.01). In the scanbody zone, the best results were for the 3DS group, followed by Obj, ND, FL and RS (P < 0.01). Comparing the technologies, the Multijet technology used in industrial printers presented better results than the DLP and SLA technologies used in dental desktop printers (P > 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

There were statistically significant differences in terms of the accuracy of the printed models, with better results for the industrial than the dental desktop 3D printers.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The industrial 3D printers used in dental laboratories presented better accuracy than the in-office dental desktop 3D printers, and this should be considered when the best accuracy is needed to perform final prosthetic restorations.

Effect of internal structures on the accuracy of 3D printed full-arch dentition preparation models in different printing systems

PURPOSE

The objective of this study was to investigate how internal structures influence the overall and marginal accuracy of full arch preparations fabricated through additive manufacturing in different printing systems.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A full-arch preparation digital model was set up with three internal designs, including solid, hollow, and grid. These were printed using three different resin printers with nine models in each group. After scanning, each data was imported into the 3D data processing software together with the master cast, aligned and trimmed, and then put into the 3D data analysis software again to compare the overall and marginal deviation whose results are expressed using root mean square values and color maps. To evaluate the trueness of the resin model, the test data and reference data were compared, and the precision was evaluated by comparing the test data sets. Color maps were observed for qualitative analysis. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni method was used for post hoc comparison (α = .05).

RESULTS

The influence of different internal structures on the accuracy of 3D printed resin models varied significantly (P < .05). Solid and grid models showed better accuracy, while the hollow model exhibited poor accuracy. The color maps show that the resin models have a tendency to shrink inwards.

CONCLUSION

The internal structure design influences the accuracy of the 3D printing model, and the effect varies in different printing systems. Irrespective of the kind of printing system, the printing accuracy of hollow model was observed to be worse than those of solid and grid models.

The state of additive manufacturing in dental research - A systematic scoping review of 2012-2022

Background/purpose

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has the potential to transform the industry. While there have been advancements in using AM for dental restorations, there is still a need for further research to develop functional biomedical and dental materials. It's crucial to understand the current status of AM technology and research trends to advance dental research in this field. The aim of this study is to reveal the current status of international scientific publications in the field of dental research related to AM technologies.

Materials and methods

In this study, a systematic scoping review was conducted using appropriate keywords within the scope of international scientific publishing databases (PubMed and Web of Science). The review included related clinical and laboratory research, including both human and animal studies, case reports, review articles, and questionnaire studies. A total of 187 research studies were evaluated for quantitative synthesis in this review.

Results

The findings highlighted a rising trend in research numbers over the years (From 2012 to 2022). The most publications were produced in 2020 and 2021, with annual percentage increases of 25.7% and 26.2%, respectively. The majority of AM-related publications in dentistry research originate from Korea. The pioneer dental sub-fields with the ost publications in its category are prosthodontics and implantology, respectively.

Conclusion

The final review result clearly stated an expectation for the future that the research in dentistry would concentrate on AM technologies in order to increase the new product and process development in dental materials, tools, implants and new generation modelling strategy related to AM. The results of this work can be used as indicators of trends related to AM research in dentistry and/or as prospects for future publication expectations in this field.

Mechanical Properties of Three-Dimensional Printed Provisional Resin Materials for Crown and Fixed Dental Prosthesis: A Systematic Review

The emergence of digital dentistry has led to the introduction of various three-dimensional (3D) printing materials in the market, specifically for provisional fixed restoration. This study aimed to undertake a systematic review of the published literature on the Mechanical Properties of 3D- Printed Provisional Resin Materials for crown and fixed dental prosthesis (FDP). The electronic database on PubMed/Medline was searched for relevant studies. The search retrieved articles that were published from January 2011 to March 2023. The established focus question was: "Do provisional 3D-printed materials have better mechanical properties than conventional or milled provisional materials?". The systematically extracted data included the researcher's name(s), publication year, evaluation method, number of samples, types of materials, and study outcome. A total of 19 studies were included in this systematic review. These studies examined different aspects of the mechanical properties of 3D-printed provisional materials. Flexural Strength and Microhardness were the frequently used mechanical testing. Furthermore, 3D-printed provisional restorations showed higher hardness, smoother surfaces, less wear volume loss, and higher wear resistance compared to either milled or conventional, or both. 3D-printed provisional resin materials appear to be a promising option for fabricating provisional crowns and FDPs.

Therapy for Temporomandibular Disorders: 3D-Printed Splints from Planning to Evaluation

INTRODUCTION

This article describes the authors' digital workflow-based method for fabricating intraoral occlusal splints, from planning to the evaluation phase.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In our protocol, first, we had a registration phase. This included taking digital impressions, determining the centric relation (CR) position with the deprogrammer Luci Jig, and using the digital facebow for measuring the individual values. The laboratory phase was next, which included planning and manufacturing with a 3D printer. The last phase was delivery, when we checked the stability of the splint and adjusted the occlusal part.

RESULT

The average cost is lower for a fully digital splint than for conventional methods. In terms of time, there was also a significant difference between the classic and digital routes. From a dental technical point of view, the execution was much more predictable. The printed material was very rigid and, therefore, fragile. Compared to the analog method, the retention was much weaker.

CONCLUSION

The presented method permits time-efficient laboratory production, and may also be performed chairside in a dental office. The technology is perfectly applicable to everyday life. In addition to its many beneficial properties, its negative properties must also be highlighted.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing in dental practice: Applications, areas of interest, and level of evidence

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this review to overview three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies available for different dental disciplines, considering the applicability of such technologies and materials development.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Source Arksey and O'Malley's five stages framework using PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus (Elsevier) databases managed this review. Papers focusing on 3D printing in dentistry and written in English were screened. Scientific productivity by the number of publications, areas of interest, and the focus of the investigations in each dental discipline were extracted.

RESULTS

Nine hundred thirty-four studies using 3D printing in dentistry were assessed. Limited clinical trials were observed, especially in Restorative, endodontics, and pediatric dentistry. Laboratory or animal studies are not reliable for clinical success, suggesting that clinical trials are a good approach to validate the new methods' outcomes and ensure that the benefits outweigh the risk. The most common application for 3D printing technologies is to facilitate conventional dental procedures.

CONCLUSIONS

The constantly improving quality of 3D printing applications has contributed to increasing the popularity of these technologies in dentistry; however, long-term clinical studies are necessary to assist in defining standards and endorsing the safe application of 3D printing in dental practice.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The recent progress in 3D materials has improved dental practice capabilities over the last decade. Understanding the current status of 3D printing in dentistry is essential to facilitate translating its applications from laboratory to the clinical setting.

Microfabrication approaches for oral research and clinical dentistry

Currently, there is a variety of laboratory tools and strategies that have been developed to investigate in-vivo processes using in-vitro models. Amongst these, microfabrication represents a disruptive technology that is currently enabling next-generation biomedical research through the development of complex laboratory approaches (e.g., microfluidics), engineering of micrometer scale sensors and actuators (micropillars for traction force microscopy), and the creation of environments mimicking cell, tissue, and organ-specific contexts. Although microfabrication has been around for some time, its application in dental and oral research is still incipient. Nevertheless, in recent years multiple lines of research have emerged that use microfabrication-based approaches for the study of oral diseases and conditions with micro- and nano-scale sensitivities. Furthermore, many investigations are aiming to develop clinically relevant microfabrication-based applications for diagnostics, screening, and oral biomaterial manufacturing. Therefore, the objective of this review is to summarize the current application of microfabrication techniques in oral sciences, both in research and clinics, and to discuss possible future applications of these technologies for in-vitro studies and practical patient care. Initially, this review provides an overview of the most employed microfabrication methods utilized in biomedicine and dentistry. Subsequently, the use of micro- and nano-fabrication approaches in relevant fields of dental research such as endodontic and periodontal regeneration, biomaterials research, dental implantology, oral pathology, and biofilms was discussed. Finally, the current and future uses of microfabrication technology for clinical dentistry and how these approaches may soon be widely available in clinics for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of relevant pathologies are presented.

Assessment of knowledge, awareness, and practices toward the use of 3D printing in dentistry among dental practitioners and dental technicians: A cross-sectional study

Background

The applications and scope of digitization and technology in dentistry are becoming increasingly valuable right from clinical dentistry to research, student training, teaching, and laboratory techniques. Mastering 3D printing and its usage are essential for dental practitioners and dental technicians as it allows them to choose and necessarily know what is offered, as well as how to implement it in everyday practices thereby contributing to the betterment of the dental profession. The study aims to assess dental practitioners' and dental technicians' knowledge, understanding, and practices related to the use of 3D printing in dentistry.

Methods

A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was done among dental practitioners and technicians in Karnataka, India who were given access to a self-explanatory questionnaire via Google link consisting of questions that evaluated their knowledge, awareness, and practices regarding 3D printing. The Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis.

Results

A total of 380 replies were obtained after the questionnaire was circulated. Awareness regarding the use of digital technology in dentistry was known by 98.9% of practitioners and 92.7% of technicians, of which we discovered that 9.28% of practitioners and 17.7% of technicians were unfamiliar with 3D printing, which was statistically significant (p = 0.0400*). 81.6% of practitioners consider 3D printing can be used to fabricate complex design prostheses.

Conclusion

The participants' understanding of digital dentistry and 3D printing is acceptable. The majority of dental professionals expressed an interest in adopting 3D printing and believe that there should be a forum for collecting and exchanging skills and knowledge about 3D printing.

The Influence of Cone Beam Computed Tomography-Derived 3D-Printed Models on Endodontic Microsurgical Treatment Planning and Confidence of the Operator

INTRODUCTION

Currently, there are no studies evaluating the impact of 3-dimensional (3D) printed models on endodontic surgical treatment planning. The aims of this study were: 1) to determine if 3D models could influence treatment planning; and 2) to assess the effect of 3D supported planning on operator confidence.

MATERIALS

Endodontic practitioners (n = 25) were asked to analyze a preselected cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan of an endodontic surgical case and answer a questionnaire that elucidated their surgical approach. After 30 days, the same participants were asked to analyze the same CBCT scan. Additionally, participants were asked to study and to perform a mock osteotomy on a 3D printed model. The participants responded to the same questionnaire along with a new set of questions. Responses were statistically analyzed using chi square test followed by either logistic or ordered regression analysis. Adjustment for multiple comparison analysis was done using a Bonferroni correction. Statistical significance was set at ≤0.005.

RESULTS

The availability of both the 3D printed model and the CBCT scan resulted in statistically significant differences in the participants' responses to their ability to detect bone landmarks, predict the location of osteotomy, and to determine the following: size of osteotomy, angle of instrumentation, involvement of critical structures in flap reflection and involvement of vital structures during curettage. In addition, the participants' confidence in performing surgery was found to be significantly higher.

CONCLUSIONS

The availability of 3D printed models did not alter the participants' surgical approach but it significantly improved their confidence for endodontic microsurgery.

Application of 3D-printed teeth models in teaching dentistry students: A scoping review

INTRODUCTION

Both regular teaching of dentistry students and various training schemes for dentists primarily make use of the series teeth models, resin blocks or extracted teeth, whereas the 3D teeth models may well offer an alternative in this respect.

METHODS

PubMed and EMBASE were searched in September 2020. Eligibility of the studies was determined on whether they had made use of the 3D-printed teeth models in both pre- and post-graduate education in dentistry.

RESULTS

The final review embraced 15 studies. There were 659 (89.54%) student participants, and 77 (10.46%) dentists involved in those studies. Five studies addressed the prosthetic and surgical procedures, two-endodontics, one-paediatric dentistry and one-trauma management. The 3D-printed models were also used in the study focused on enhancing the students' manual dexterity, whilst making use of the PhantHome tool.

DISCUSSION

The 3D-printed teeth models developed for teaching purposes are used in various areas of dentistry. Their overall usefulness in acquiring the necessary hands-on skills for clinical work was acknowledged in all the studies under review, regardless of a specific procedure at issue. The 3D models effectively eliminate the hazard of cross-infection. Overall effectiveness of the soft tissue reproduction appears to be their weakest point indicated to date, especially in the surgical models.

CONCLUSIONS

The 3D-printed teeth models provide an alternative to the extracted ones, and the series teeth models in regular teaching practice. Participants of the studies under review thoroughly recommend introducing 3D models into any hands-on practice.

Additive manufacturing technologies in the oral implant clinic: A review of current applications and progress

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies can enable the direct fabrication of customized physical objects with complex shapes, based on computer-aided design models. This technology is changing the digital manufacturing industry and has become a subject of considerable interest in digital implant dentistry. Personalized dentistry implant treatments for individual patients can be achieved through Additive manufacturing. Herein, we review the applications of Additive manufacturing technologies in oral implantology, including implant surgery, and implant and restoration products, such as surgical guides for implantation, custom titanium meshes for bone augmentation, personalized or non-personalized dental implants, custom trays, implant casts, and implant-support frameworks, among others. In addition, this review also focuses on Additive manufacturing technologies commonly used in oral implantology. Stereolithography, digital light processing, and fused deposition modeling are often used to construct surgical guides and implant casts, whereas direct metal laser sintering, selective laser melting, and electron beam melting can be applied to fabricate dental implants, personalized titanium meshes, and denture frameworks. Moreover, it is sometimes required to combine Additive manufacturing technology with milling and other cutting and finishing techniques to ensure that the product is suitable for its final application.

Digital restorative workflows for developmental dental defects in young patients: A case series

BACKGROUND

Digital technology is rapidly changing the provision of oral health care, although its adoption for the oral health care of young patients has lagged. The authors describe digitally supported treatment approaches for managing treatment of developmental dental defects in the early permanent dentition.

CASE DESCRIPTION

Four adolescent patients with amelogenesis imperfecta received transitional anterior restorations for esthetic and functional rehabilitation using a variety of digital workflows. Combinations of restoration type, materials, and fabrication methods were selected to meet the needs of each patient on the basis of their specific amelogenesis imperfecta phenotype and chief symptoms. These cases highlight the application of digital technology in pediatric and adolescent dentistry for managing the treatment of developmental dental defects.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Digitally supported restorative approaches, as described in this report, offer broad applicability of materials and techniques directed at treating the complex restorative needs of young patients in the transitional and early permanent dentition.

Periodontitis: An Oral Disease with Severe Consequences

Periodontitis, being a multifactorial disorder is found to be the most common oral disease denoted by the inflammation of gingiva and resorption of tooth supporting alveolar bone. The disease being closely linked with fast life style and determined by unhygienic behavioural factors, the internal milieu of oral cavity and formation of plaque biofilm on the dental and gingival surfaces. Porphyromonas gingivalis, being the major keystone pathogen of the periodontal biofilm evokes host immune responses that causes damage of gingival tissues and resorption of bones. The biofilm associated microbial community progressively aggravates the condition resulting in chronic inflammation and finally tooth loss. The disease often maintains bidirectional relationship with different systemic, genetic, autoimmune, immunodeficiency diseases and even psychological disorders. The disease can be diagnosed and predicted by various genetic, radiographic and computer-aided design (CAD) & computer-aided engineering (CAE) and artificial neural network (ANN). The elucidation of genetic background explains the inheritance of the disease. The therapeutic approaches commonly followed include mechanical removal of dental plaque with the use of systemic antibiotics. Awareness generation amongst local people, adoption of good practice of timely tooth brushing preferably with fluoride paste or with nanoconjugate pastes will reduce the chance of periodontal plaque formation. Modern tissue engineering technology like 3D bioprinting of periodontal tissue may help in patient specific flawless regeneration of tooth structures and associated bones.

Fabrication of 3D-Printed Contact Lens Composed of Polyethylene Glycol Diacrylate for Controlled Release of Azithromycin

Since three-dimensional (3D)-printed tablets were approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 3D printing technology has garnered increasing interest for the fabrication of medical and pharmaceutical devices. With various dosing devices being designed for manufacture by 3D printing, 3D-printed ophthalmic formulations to release drugs have been one such target of investigation. In the current study, 3D-printed contact lenses designed for the controlled release of the antibiotic azithromycin were produced by vat photopolymerization, and the effect of the printer ink composition and a second curing process was investigated. The azithromycin-loaded contact lenses were composed of the cross-linking reagent polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), PEG 400 as a solvent, a photoinitiator, and azithromycin. The 3D-printed contact lenses were fabricated successfully, and formulations with lower PEGDA concentrations produced thicker lenses. The mechanical strength of the PEGDA-based contact lenses was dependent on the amount of PEGDA and was improved by a second curing process. Drug release from 3D-printed contact lenses was reduced in the samples with a second curing process. The azithromycin-loaded contact lenses exhibited antimicrobial effects in vitro for both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. These results suggest that 3D-printed contact lenses containing antibiotics are an effective model for treating eye infections by controlling drug release.

Application of HoloLens-based augmented reality and three-dimensional printed anatomical tooth reference models in dental education

Tooth anatomy is fundamental knowledge used in everyday dental practice to reconstruct the occlusal surface during cavity fillings. The main objective of this project was to evaluate the suitability of two types of anatomical tooth reference models used to support reconstruction of the occlusal anatomy of the teeth: (1) a three-dimensional (3D)-printed model and (2) a model displayed in augmented reality (AR) using Microsoft HoloLens. The secondary objective was to evaluate three aspects impacting the outcome: clinical experience, comfort of work, and other variables. The tertiary objective was to evaluate the usefulness of AR in dental education. Anatomical models of crowns of three different molars were made using cone beam computed tomography image segmentation, printed with a stereolithographic 3D-printer, and then displayed in the HoloLens. Each participant reconstructed the occlusal anatomy of three teeth. One without any reference materials and two with an anatomical reference model, either 3D-printed or holographic. The reconstruction work was followed by the completion of an evaluation questionnaire. The maximum Hausdorff distances (Hmax) between the superimposed images of the specimens after the procedures and the anatomical models were then calculated. The results showed that the most accurate but slowest reconstruction was achieved with the use of 3D-printed reference models and that the results were not affected by other aspects considered. For this method, the Hmax was observed to be 630 μm (p = 0.004). It was concluded that while AR models can be helpful in dental anatomy education, they are not suitable replacements for physical models.

Review on 3D printing in dentistry: conventional to personalized dental care

This review talks about the dental implants, polymers that are employed in concocting dental implants, critical parameters, and challenges which are to be considered while preparing these implants, advantages of 3D printing in the field of dentistry and the current trends. it discusses the variety of applications of 3D printed materials in the field of dentistry. Along with their method of fabrication, their critical process parameters (CPPs) are also discussed.

Analysis of Deep Learning Techniques for Dental Informatics: A Systematic Literature Review

Within the ever-growing healthcare industry, dental informatics is a burgeoning field of study. One of the major obstacles to the health care system’s transformation is obtaining knowledge and insightful data from complex, high-dimensional, and diverse sources. Modern biomedical research, for instance, has seen an increase in the use of complex, heterogeneous, poorly documented, and generally unstructured electronic health records, imaging, sensor data, and text. There were still certain restrictions even after many current techniques were used to extract more robust and useful elements from the data for analysis. New effective paradigms for building end-to-end learning models from complex data are provided by the most recent deep learning technology breakthroughs. Therefore, the current study aims to examine the most recent research on the use of deep learning techniques for dental informatics problems and recommend creating comprehensive and meaningful interpretable structures that might benefit the healthcare industry. We also draw attention to some drawbacks and the need for better technique development and provide new perspectives about this exciting new development in the field.

Customized Titanium Mesh for Guided Bone Regeneration with Autologous Bone and Xenograft

The augmentation of the alveolar crest after the loss of one or several teeth can be carried out using different bone augmentation techniques. These techniques include bone distraction, ridge expansion, bone block grafts, etc. Guided bone regeneration is an alternative to increase the volume of the hard tissues for the subsequent placement of the implants in the optimal three-dimensional position. The objective of this paper is to show a case report of the use of customized titanium mesh for posterior vertical bone regeneration. Case report and Results: A 59-year-old woman comes to rehabilitate edentulous spaces with implants. After taking the anamnesis and the intra and extraoral exploration, a vertical and horizontal bone defect is observed in the third quadrant. After the radiological study with CBCT, a bone height of 6.04 mm to the inferior alveolar nerve and a width of the bone crest of 3.95 mm was observed. It was decided to carry out a regeneration with a preformed titanium mesh (Avinent^®, Santpedor, Spain) and four microscrews (Avinent^®, Santpedor, Spain). The flap was closed without tension. Regular check-ups were performed without complications. At 7 months, the mesh was removed and two osteoingrated implants (Avinent^®, Santpedor, Spain) were placed with a torque greater than 45 N/cm and an ISQ of 82 and 57 N/cm, respectively. The bone gain obtained was 1.84 and 1.92 mm in width and 4.2 and 3.78 mm in height for positions 3.5 and 3.6. The newly formed bone, obtained by trephine, was well-structured and histologically indistinguishable from the previous bone. Conclusion: The use of a customized pre-formed titanium mesh together with the mixture of autologous bone and xenograft is a feasible and predictable technique for vertical bone regeneration.

Additive Manufactured Polymers in Dentistry, Current State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives-A Review

3D-printing application in dentistry not only enables the manufacture of patient-specific devices and tissue constructs, but also allows mass customization, as well as digital workflow, with predictable lower cost and rapid turnaround times. 4D printing also shows a good impact in dentistry, as it can produce dynamic and adaptable materials, which have proven effective in the oral environment, under its continuously changing thermal and humidity conditions. It is expected to further boost the research into producing a whole tooth, capable to harmoniously integrate with the surrounding periodontium, which represents the ultimate goal of tissue engineering in dentistry. Because of their high versatility associated with the wide variety of available materials, additive manufacturing in dentistry predominantly targets the production of polymeric constructs. The aim of this narrative review is to catch a glimpse of the current state-of-the-art of additive manufacturing in dentistry, and the future perspectives of this modern technology, focusing on the specific polymeric materials.

Knowledge on Applications of 3D Design and Printing in Dentistry Among Dental Practitioners in Saudi Arabia: A Questionnaire-Based Survey

Background: This knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) survey will provide baseline data and identify gaps that may facilitate understanding and further action to plan, implement, and evaluate practice toward 3D-printing technology among dental practitioners in Saudi Arabia.

Aims and objectives: The present study aims to assess dental practitioners' self-reported knowledge, attitude, and practice of 3D printing in Saudi Arabia.

Methodology: A cross-sectional, closed-ended questionnaire of registered dental practitioners in Saudi Arabia was conducted. A sample size of 156 was considered for analysis. After obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board, Riyadh Elm University, the research was conducted during the month of April 2022 amongst 154 registered dental practitioners. The research was distributed among dental health specialists either working in dental colleges, dental clinics, or both in government as well as private settings. Dentists who were not actively involved in 3D printing were excluded. SPSS software, version 25.0, (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) was used to analyze the data.

Results and conclusion: Of all dentists included in the study, 98% were found to be aware that 3D printing in dentistry is used in Saudi Arabia and 2 % were not aware of its usage in Saudi Arabia. In total, 78.60% of the dentists felt that 3D-printed implant guides made the placement of implants the most accurate and least complicated procedure, and 21.40% of the dentists felt it was the least accurate and most complicated procedure.

The effects of additive manufacturing technologies and finish line designs on the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed dies

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effects of 5 manufacturing technologies and 2 finish line designs on the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed definitive dies at finish line regions under different storage conditions and time.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Preparation of light chamfer and round shoulder finish lines were adopted individually on two mandibular first molar typodont teeth and digitalized as standard tessellation language (STL) files. A total of 240 samples (192 AM definitive dies and 48 definitive conventional stone dies) in 20 groups (n = 12) were manufactured based on 2 finishing line designs (chamfer and shoulder), 5 manufacturing technologies (4 additively manufactured technologies and conventional stone die), and 2 storage conditions (light exposure and dark). The 4 additively manufactured (AM) technologies include a DLP 3D-printer, an economic LED 3D-printer, a CLIP 3D-printer, and an SLA 3D-printer. All the study samples were distributed into two storage conditions. Subsequently, samples were digitalized to STL files at 3 different time points (within 36 hours, 1-month, and 3-months). A surface matching software was used to superimpose the sample STL files onto the corresponding original STL files with the best-fit alignment function. The trueness of each printed and stone definitive dies and their dimensional stabilities were measured by the root mean square (RMS, in mm). A linear mixed-effects model was used to test the effects of the finish line design, manufacturing technology, storage condition, and storage time on RMS values (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

While finish line designs had no significant effects [F(1, 220) = 0.85, P < 0.358], the manufacturing technologies [F(3, 220) = 33.02, P < .001], storage condition [F(1, 220) = 4.11, P = .044], and storage time F(2, 440) = 10.37, P < .001] affected the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed dies at finish line regions. No significant interactions were found among the 4 factors. For the manufacturing technologies, Type IV stone groups and LCD 3D-printer groups had significantly higher RMS values than the other 3 printers (P < .001) with no significant differences between Type IV stone and LCD 3D-printer groups (P = .577). DLP 3D-printer groups had higher RMS values than both SLA 3D-printer groups and CLIP 3D-printer groups (P < .001). There were no significant differences between SLA 3D-printer groups and CLIP 3D-printer groups, P = 0.671. For the effects of storage conditions, RMS values were significantly higher in the groups stored with the direct light exposure than the ones stored in the dark, P = .044. In terms of the effects of storage time, the RMS values were significantly higher after 1-month storage, P = 0.002; and 3-month storage, P <.001, than the ones at the immediate post-manufacturing stage. However, the RMS values after 1-month and 3-month storage were not significantly different from each other (P = .169).

CONCLUSIONS

Manufacturing technologies, storage conditions, and storage time significantly affected the trueness and dimensional stability of 3D-printed dies at finish line regions, while finish line designs had no significant effects. Among the AM technologies tested, all have produced either comparable or truer 3D-printed dies than the Type IV dental stone dies, and the CLIP and SLA 3D-printers produced the best outcomes. 3D-printed dies showed significant distortion after 1-month and 3-months storage, especially under light exposure storage conditions. These findings may negate the clinical need to preserve 3D-printed dies, and digital data should be preserved instead. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Customized Barrier Membrane (Titanium Alloy, Poly Ether-Ether Ketone and Unsintered Hydroxyapatite/Poly-l-Lactide) for Guided Bone Regeneration

Sufficient bone volume is indispensable to achieve functional and aesthetic results in the fields of oral oncology, trauma, and implantology. Currently, guided bone regeneration (GBR) is widely used in reconstructing the alveolar ridge and repairing bone defects owing to its low technical sensitivity and considerable osteogenic effect. However, traditional barrier membranes such as collagen membranes or commercial titanium mesh cannot meet clinical requirements, such as lack of space-preserving ability, or may lead to more complications. With the development of digitalization and three-dimensional printing technology, the above problems can be addressed by employing customized barrier membranes to achieve space maintenance, precise predictability of bone graft, and optimization of patient-specific strategies. The article reviews the processes and advantages of three-dimensional computer-assisted surgery with GBR in maxillofacial reconstruction and alveolar bone augmentation; the properties of materials used in fabricating customized bone regeneration sheets; the promising bone regeneration potency of customized barrier membranes in clinical applications; and up-to-date achievements. This review aims to present a reference on the clinical aspects and future applications of customized barrier membranes.

Cone-beam computed tomography three-dimensional reconstruction aids treatment of three root canals with severe curvature in maxillary first premolar: a case report

The maxillary first premolar commonly has one or two root canals; the presence of three canals is rare. These root canals are easily missed during treatment, resulting in failure of root canal therapy. The present report describes a case in which three root canals in the maxillary first premolar were diagnosed by cone-beam computed tomography. The herein-described patient was successfully treated using three-dimensional reconstruction technology to determine the form and direction of curvature of the root canals.

A comparison of trueness and precision of 12 3D printers used in dentistry

Introduction

Judging the dimensional accuracy of the resulting printed part requires comparison and conformity between the 3D printed model and its virtual counterpart. The resolution and accuracy of 3D model samples are determined by a wide array of factors depending on the technology used and related factors such as the print head/laser spot size/screen resolution, build orientation, materials, geometric features, and their topology.

Aims

The aim of this manuscript is to present a literature review on 12 3D printers, namely the Ackuretta Sol, Anycubic Photon and Photon S, Asiga Max UV, Elegoo Mars, Envisiontec Vida HD, Envisiontec One, Envisiontec D4K Pro, Formlabs Form 2 and Form 3, Nextdent 5100, and Planmeca Creo, studying the accuracy of these printers that are of a wide variety of budgets.

Design

The present study involves some of the recently released 3D printers that have not yet been studied for their accuracy. Since these new printers will replace current models that may have been included in the previous studies in the literature, it is important to study whether they are statistically more or less accurate and to discuss whether these results are clinically relevant. For the purposes of this study, the use of a standardised printable object was used to measure the accuracy of these recent 3D printers.

Materials and methods

In total, 12 3D printers produced test blocks. All test blocks were printed using the same settings with 100 micron Z layer thickness and the print time set to standard where applicable. To measure the resulting blocks a digital measurement was taken using a Dentsply Sirona Ineos X5 lab scanner to measure the XYZ dimensions of each block produced on each printer using CloudCompare to measure the deviation compared to the Master STL. Each measurement was taken from the central axis of that dimension.

Results

When grouped into homogenous subsets, the cheapest 3D printers in the group, namely the Anycubic printers and the Elegoo Mars, are statistically not dissimilar to the higher priced Asiga Max UV or even the mid-priced Formlabs printers in the X and Z dimensions. However, the Envisiontec One and D4K Pro, Ackuretta Sol and Asiga Max UV were statistically superior in terms of consistently accurate Y dimension. Although these printers use different technologies to print, no specific type of printer technology is more accurate than the others.

Discussion

The null hypothesis was proved to be true, in that no significant differences were found among the various technologies of 3D printing regarding trueness and precision. The evolution of 3D printers that leads to budget printers being as statistically accurate, for at least two of the dimensions of data recorded, as expensive printers is remarkable. Whilst clear differences in the mean error between the printers were found, the performance of these printers is considered exceptional. Albeit, the Envision One, Envision D4K, Ackuretta Sol and Asiga Max UV printers performed the best with overall trueness under 35 μm.

Conclusion

This study shows that the current range of 3D printers can produce clinically acceptable levels of accuracy. The present study also shows that there is no statistical difference in the results of budget printers and more expensive printers for the X and Z dimensions but this was not the case for the measurements in the Y dimension. This study confirms that all of the 3D printers can produce a reliable, reproducible model.
