Potential Environmental Factors Affecting Oil-Degrading Bacterial Populations in Deep and Surface Waters of the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Structure and composition of microbial communities in the water column from Southern Gulf of Mexico and detection of putative hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms

This study assessed the bacterioplankton community and its relationship with environmental variables, including total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration, in the Yucatan shelf area of the Southern Gulf of Mexico. Beta diversity analyses based on 16S rRNA sequences indicated variations in the bacterioplankton community structure among sampling sites. PERMANOVA indicated that these variations could be mainly related to changes in depth (5 to 180 m), dissolved oxygen concentration (2.06 to 5.93 mg L-1), and chlorophyll-a concentration (0.184 to 7.65 mg m3). Moreover, SIMPER and one-way ANOVA analyses showed that the shifts in the relative abundances of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus were related to changes in microbial community composition and chlorophyll-a values. Despite the low TPH content measured in the studied sites (0.01 to 0.86 μL L-1), putative hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria such as Alteromonas, Acinetobacter, Balneola, Erythrobacter, Oleibacter, Roseibacillus, and the MWH-UniP1 aquatic group were detected. The relatively high copy number of the alkB gene detected in the water column by qPCR and the enrichment of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria obtained during lab crude oil tests exhibited the potential of bacterioplankton communities from the Yucatan shelf to respond to potential hydrocarbon impacts in this important area of the Gulf Mexico.

Diversity links to functionality: Unraveling the impact of pressure disruption and culture medium on crude oil-enriched microbial communities from the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Mesopelagic water from the deep Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) was collected under disrupted (REPRESS) or undisturbed (HP) pressure conditions and was acclimated to oil (OIL) or dispersed-oil (DISPOIL) under in situ pressure and temperature (10 MPa, 14 °C). Decompression resulted in oil-acclimatised microbial communities of lower diversity despite the restoration of in situ pressure conditions during the 1-week incubation. Further biodiversity loss was observed when oil-acclimatised communities were transferred to ONR7 medium to facilitate the isolation of oil-degrading bacteria. Microbial diversity loss impacted the degradation of recalcitrant oil compounds, especially PAHs, as low-abundance taxa, linked with PAH degradation, were outcompeted in the enrichment process. Thalassomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Halomonas and Alcanivorax were enriched in ONR7 under all experimental conditions. No effect of dispersant application on the microbial community structure was identified. A. venustensis was isolated under all tested conditions suggesting a potential key role of this species in hydrocarbons removal in the deep EMS.

Progress of Crude Oil Gasification Technology Assisted by Microorganisms in Reservoirs

Crude oil gasification bacteria, including fermenting bacteria, hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria, reducing bacteria, and methanogenic bacteria, participate in multi-step reactions involving initial activation, intermediate metabolism, and the methanogenesis of crude oil hydrocarbons. These bacteria degrade crude oil into smaller molecules such as hydrogen, carbon dioxide, acetic acid, and formic acid. Ultimately, they convert it into methane, which can be utilized or stored as a strategic resource. However, the current challenges in crude oil gasification include long production cycles and low efficiency. This paper provides a summary of the microbial flora involved in crude oil gasification, the gasification metabolism pathways within reservoirs, and other relevant information. It specifically focuses on analyzing the factors that affect the efficiency of crude oil gasification metabolism and proposes suggestions for improving this efficiency. These studies deepen our understanding of the potential of reservoir ecosystems and provide valuable insights for future reservoir development and management.

Bioremediation for the recovery of oil polluted marine environment, opportunities and challenges approaching the Blue Growth

The Blue Growth strategy promises a sustainable use of marine resources for the benefit of the society. However, oil pollution in the marine environment is still a serious issue for human, animal, and environmental health; in addition, it deprives citizens of the potential economic and recreational advantages in the affected areas. Bioremediation, that is the use of bio-resources for the degradation of pollutants, is one of the focal themes on which the Blue Growth aims to. A repertoire of marine-derived bio-products, biomaterials, processes, and services useful for efficient, economic, low impact, treatments for the recovery of oil-polluted areas has been demonstrated in many years of research around the world. Nonetheless, although bioremediation technology is routinely applied in soil, this is not still standardized in the marine environment and the potential market is almost underexploited. This review provides a summary of opportunities for the exploiting and addition of value to research products already validated. Moreover, the review discusses challenges that limit bioremediation in marine environment and actions that can facilitate the conveying of valuable products/processes towards the market.

Bacterial community composition in the Northern Gulf of Mexico intertidal sediment bioturbated by the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus louisianensis

Bioturbation plays an important role in structuring microbial communities in coastal sediments. This study investigates the bacterial community composition in sediment associated with the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus louisianensis at two locations in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (Bay St. Louis, MS, and Choctawhatchee Bay, FL). Bacteria were analysed for shrimp burrows and for three different depths of bioturbated intertidal sediment, using second-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Burrow walls held a unique bacterial community, which was significantly different from those in the surrounding sediment communities. Communities in burrow walls and surrounding sediment communities also differed between the two geographic locations. The burrow wall communities from both locations were more similar to each other than to sediment communities from same location. Alpha- and Gammaproteobacteria were more abundant in burrows and surface sediment than in the subsurface, whereas Deltaproteobacteria were more abundant in burrows and subsurface sediment, suggesting sediment mixing by the bioturbator. However, abundance of individual ASVs was geographic location-specific for all samples. Therefore, it is suggested that the geographic location plays an important role in regional microbial communities distinctiveness. Bioturbation appears to be an important environmental driver in structuring the community around burrows. Sampling was conducted during times of the year and water salinity, tidal regime and temperature were variable, nevertheless the structure microbial communities appeared to remain realatively stable suggesting that these environmental variable played only a minor role.

Exploring novel alkane-degradation pathways in uncultured bacteria from the North Atlantic Ocean

IMPORTANCE

Petroleum pollution in the ocean has increased because of rapid population growth and modernization, requiring urgent remediation. Our understanding of the metabolic response of native microbial communities to oil spills is not well understood. Here, we explored the baseline hydrocarbon-degrading communities of a subarctic Atlantic region to uncover the metabolic potential of the bacteria that inhabit the surface and subsurface water. We conducted enrichments with a 13C-labeled hydrocarbon to capture the fraction of the community actively using the hydrocarbon. We then combined this approach with metagenomics to identify the metabolic potential of this hydrocarbon-degrading community. This revealed previously undescribed uncultured bacteria with unique metabolic mechanisms involved in aerobic hydrocarbon degradation, indicating that temperature may be pivotal in structuring hydrocarbon-degrading baseline communities. Our findings highlight gaps in our understanding of the metabolic complexity of hydrocarbon degradation by native marine microbial communities.

Vertical dynamics of free-living and particle-associated vibrio communities in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean

Members of the family Vibrionaceae (vibrios) are widely distributed in estuarine, offshore, and marginal seas and perform an important ecological role in the marine organic carbon cycle. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge about whether vibrios play ecological roles in the oligotrophic pelagic area, which occupies a larger water volume. In this study, we investigated the abundance, diversity, and composition of free-living and particle-associated vibrios and their relationships with environmental factors along the water depth in the eastern tropical Indian Ocean (ETIO). The abundance of vibrios in free-living fractions was significantly higher than that of particle-associated fractions on the surface. Still, both were similar at the bottom, indicating that vibrios may shift from free-living lifestyles on the surface to mixed lifestyles at the bottom. Vibrio-specific 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Paraphotobacterium marinum and Vibrio rotiferianus were dominant species in the water column, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus (a clinically important pathogen) was recorded in 102 samples of 111 seawater samples in 10 sites, which showed significant difference from the marginal seas. The community composition also shifted, corresponding to different depths in the water column. Paraphotobacterium marinum decreased with depth, and V. rotiferianus OTU1528 was mainly distributed in deeper water, which significantly correlated with the alteration of environmental factors (e.g., temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen). In addition to temperature and salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO) was an important factor that affected the composition and abundance of Vibrio communities in the ETIO. Our study revealed the vertical dynamics and preferential lifestyles of vibrios in the ETIO, helping to fill a knowledge gap on their ecological distribution in oligotrophic pelagic areas and fully understanding the response of vibrios in a global warming environment.

Dosage concentration and pulsing frequency affect the degradation efficiency in simulated bacterial polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading cultures

A major source of anthropogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) inputs into marine environments are diffuse emissions which result in low PAH concentrations in the ocean water, posing a potential threat for the affected ecosystems. However, the remediation of low-dosage PAH contaminations through microbial processes remains largely unknown. Here, we developed a process-based numerical model to simulate batch cultures receiving repeated low-dosage naphthalene pulses compared to the conventionally used one-time high-dosage. Pulsing frequency as well as dosage concentration had a large impact on the degradation efficiency. After 10 days, 99.7%, 97.2%, 86.6%, or 83.5% of the 145 mg L^-1 naphthalene was degraded when given as a one-time high-dosage or in 2, 5, or 10 repeated low-concentration dosages equally spaced throughout the experiment, respectively. If the simulation was altered, giving the system that received 10 pulses time to recover to 99.7%, pulsing patterns affected the degradation of naphthalene. When pulsing 10 days at once per day, naphthalene accumulated following each pulse and if the degradation was allowed to continue until the recovered state was reached, the incubation time was prolonged to 17 days with a generation time of 3.81 days. If a full recovery was conditional before the next pulse was added, the scenario elongated to 55 days and generation time increased to 14.15 days. This indicates that dissolution kinetics dominate biodegradation kinetics, and the biomass concentration of PAH-degrading bacteria alone is not a sufficient indicator for quantifying active biodegradation. Applying those findings to the environment, a one-time input of a high dosage is potentially degraded faster than repeated low-dosage PAH pollution and repeated low-dosage input could lead to PAH accumulation in vulnerable pristine environments. Further research on the overlooked field of chronic low-dosage PAH contamination is necessary.

Biodegradation potential of residue generated during the in-situ burning of oil in the marine environment

The biodegradability of residues derived from in-situ burning, an oil spill response strategy which involves burning an oil slick on the sea surface, has not yet been fully studied. With a growing risk of oil spills, the fate of the persistent burn residue containing potentially toxic substances must be better understood. Microcosms were used to study the microbial community response and potential biodegradability of in-situ burn residues generated from Ultra Low Sulphur (ULS) marine diesel. Microcosm studies were conducted using residues originating from the burning of unweathered and weathered diesel, with the addition of a fertilizer and a dispersant. Burn residues were incubated for 6 weeks at 7 °C in natural seawater with continual agitation in the dark. Samples were subsequently sacrificed for chemistry as well as 16S rRNA gene amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Chemistry analyses revealed a reduction in hydrocarbon concentrations. Medium chain-length n-alkanes (nC₁₆-nC₂₄) decreased by 8% in unweathered burn residue microcosms and up to 26% in weathered burn residue microcosms. A significant decrease in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations was observed only for naphthalene, fluorene and their alkylated homologs, in the microcosms amended with residue produced from burning weathered diesel. Decreases of 2-24%, were identified depending on the compound. Microcosms amended with burn residues had distinct microbial communities marked by an increase in relative abundance of putative hydrocarbon degraders as well as an increase of known hydrocarbon-degradation genes. These novel results suggest that if in-situ burning is performed on ULS marine diesel, some of the indigenous bacteria would respond to the newly available carbon source and some of the residual compounds would be biodegraded. Future studies involving longer incubation periods could give a better understanding of the fate of burn residues by shedding light on the potential biodegradability of the more recalcitrant residual compounds.

Influence of Extremely High Pressure and Oxygen on Hydrocarbon-Enriched Microbial Communities in Sediments from the Challenger Deep, Mariana Trench

Recent studies reported that highly abundant alkane content exists in the ~11,000 m sediment of the Mariana Trench, and a few key alkane-degrading bacteria were identified in the Mariana Trench. At present, most of the studies on microbes for degrading hydrocarbons were performed mainly at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa) and room temperature; little is known about which microbes could be enriched with the addition of n-alkanes under in-situ environmental pressure and temperature conditions in the hadal zone. In this study, we conducted microbial enrichments of sediment from the Mariana Trench with short-chain (SCAs, C7–C17) or long-chain (LCAs, C18–C36) n-alkanes and incubated them at 0.1 MPa/100 MPa and 4 °C under aerobic or anaerobic conditions for 150 days. Microbial diversity analysis showed that a higher microbial diversity was observed at 100 MPa than at 0.1 MPa, irrespective of whether SCAs or LCAs were added. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) and hierarchical cluster analysis revealed that different microbial clusters were formed according to hydrostatic pressure and oxygen. Significantly different microbial communities were formed according to pressure or oxygen (p < 0.05). For example, Gammaproteobacteria (Thalassolituus) were the most abundant anaerobic n-alkanes-enriched microbes at 0.1 MPa, whereas the microbial communities shifted to dominance by Gammaproteobacteria (Idiomarina, Halomonas, and Methylophaga) and Bacteroidetes (Arenibacter) at 100 MPa. Compared to the anaerobic treatments, Actinobacteria (Microbacterium) and Alphaproteobacteria (Sulfitobacter and Phenylobacterium) were the most abundant groups with the addition of hydrocarbon under aerobic conditions at 100 MPa. Our results revealed that unique n-alkane-enriched microorganisms were present in the deepest sediment of the Mariana Trench, which may imply that extremely high hydrostatic pressure (100 MPa) and oxygen dramatically affected the processes of microbial-mediated alkane utilization.

Temporal variability of microbial response to crude oil exposure in the northern Gulf of Mexico

Oil spills are common occurrences in the United States and can result in extensive ecological damage. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was the largest accidental spill recorded. Many studies were performed in deep water habitats to understand the microbial response to the released crude oil. However, much less is known about how planktonic coastal communities respond to oil spills and whether that response might vary over the course of the year. Understanding this temporal variability would lend additional insight into how coastal Florida habitats may have responded to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. To assess this, the temporal response of planktonic coastal microbial communities to acute crude oil exposure was examined from September 2015 to September 2016 using seawater samples collected from Pensacola Beach, Florida, at 2-week intervals. A standard oil exposure protocol was performed using water accommodated fractions made from MC252 surrogate oil under photo-oxidizing conditions. Dose response curves for bacterial production and primary production were constructed from 3H-leucine incorporation and 14C-bicarbonate fixation, respectively. To assess drivers of temporal patterns in inhibition, a suite of biological and environmental parameters was measured including bacterial counts, chlorophyll a, temperature, salinity, and nutrients. Additionally, 16S rRNA sequencing was performed on unamended seawater to determine if temporal variation in the in situ bacterial community contributed to differences in inhibition. We observed that there is temporal variation in the inhibition of primary and bacterial production due to acute crude oil exposure. We also identified significant relationships of inhibition with environmental and biological parameters that quantitatively demonstrated that exposure to water-soluble crude oil constituents was most detrimental to planktonic microbial communities when temperature was high, when there were low inputs of total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and when there was low bacterial diversity or low phytoplankton biomass.

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by microbial consortium from paddy rice soil

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the most widely spread pollutants in the environment including the agricultural soil. PAH degradation by indigenous bacteria is an effective and economical means to remove these pollutants from the environment. Here, we report a bacterial consortium (Pdy-1) isolated from paddy rice soil in northern Japan able to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at high rates. Pdy-1 was incubated with a mixture of PAH compounds (fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) in Bushnell Haas Medium at a final concentration of 100 mg/L each. PDY-1 degraded 100% of fluorene, 95% of phenanthrene, and 52% of pyrene in 5 days. Phenanthrene and pyrene were completely degraded at 10 d and 15 d, respectively. Cloning of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the consortium was composed of 40% Achromobacter and 7% each of Castelaniella, Rhodanobacter, and Hypomicrobium. Comamonas, Ferrovibrio, Terrimonas, Bordetella, Rhizobium, and Pseudonocardia were also detected. PCR-DGGE showed the dynamics of the consortium during the incubation period. Real-time PCR revealed that PAH degrading genes such as the gram-positive ring dihydroxylating genes (PAH-RDH) and pyrene dioxygenase (nidA) were most abundant at day 5 when the rapid biodegradation of the PAHs was observed. This study improves our understanding on dynamics and characteristics of an effective PAH-degrading bacterial consortium from paddy rice soil.

The identification of the new species Nitratireductor thuwali sp. nov. reveals the untapped diversity of hydrocarbon-degrading culturable bacteria from the arid mangrove sediments of the Red Sea

Introduction

The geological isolation, lack of freshwater inputs and specific internal water circulations make the Red Sea one of the most extreme-and unique-oceans on the planet. Its high temperature, salinity and oligotrophy, along with the consistent input of hydrocarbons due to its geology (e.g., deep-sea vents) and high oil tankers traffic, create the conditions that can drive and influence the assembly of unique marine (micro)biomes that evolved to cope with these multiple stressors. We hypothesize that mangrove sediments, as a model-specific marine environment of the Red Sea, act as microbial hotspots/reservoirs of such diversity not yet explored and described.

Methods

To test our hypothesis, we combined oligotrophic media to mimic the Red Sea conditions and hydrocarbons as C-source (i.e., crude oil) with long incubation time to allow the cultivation of slow-growing environmentally (rare or uncommon) relevant bacteria.

Results and discussion

This approach reveals the vast diversity of taxonomically novel microbial hydrocarbon degraders within a collection of a few hundred isolates. Among these isolates, we characterized a novel species, Nitratireductor thuwali sp. nov., namely, Nit1536^T. It is an aerobic, heterotrophic, Gram-stain-negative bacterium with optimum growth at 37°C, 8 pH and 4% NaCl, whose genome and physiological analysis confirmed the adaptation to extreme and oligotrophic conditions of the Red Sea mangrove sediments. For instance, Nit1536^T metabolizes different carbon substrates, including straight-chain alkanes and organic acids, and synthesizes compatible solutes to survive in salty mangrove sediments. Our results showed that the Red Sea represent a source of yet unknown novel hydrocarbon degraders adapted to extreme marine conditions, and their discovery and characterization deserve further effort to unlock their biotechnological potential.

Genome-based taxonomic rearrangement of Oceanobacter-related bacteria including the description of Thalassolituus hydrocarbonoclasticus sp. nov. and Thalassolituus pacificus sp. nov. and emended description of the genus Thalassolituus

Oceanobacter-related bacteria (ORB) are a group of oligotrophic marine bacteria play an underappreciated role in carbon cycling. They have been frequently described as one of the dominant bacterial groups with a wide distribution in coastal and deep seawater of global oceans. To clarify their taxonomic affiliation in relation to alkane utilization, phylogenomic and comparative genomics analyses were performed based on currently available genomes from GenBank and four newly isolated strains, in addition to phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics. Consistently, phylogenomic analysis robustly separated them into two groups, which are accordingly hydrocarbon-degrading (HD, Thalassolituus and Oleibacter) and non-HD (NHD, Oceanobacter). In addition, the two groups can also be readily distinguished by several polyphasic taxonomic characteristics. Furthermore, both AAI and POCP genomic indices within the HD group support the conclusion that the members of the genus Oleibacter should be transferred into the genus Thalassolituus. Moreover, HD and NHD bacteria differed significantly in terms of genome size, G + C content and genes involved in alkane utilization. All HD bacteria contain the key gene alkB encoding an alkane monooxygenase, which can be used as a marker gene to distinguish the members of closely related genera Oceanobacter and Thalassolituus. Pangenome analysis revealed that the larger accessory genome may endow Thalassolituus with the flexibility to cope with the dynamics of marine environments and thrive therein, although they possess smaller pan, core- and unique-genomes than Oceanobacter. Within the HD group, twelve species were clearly distinguished from each other by both dDDH and ANI genomic indices, including two novel species represented by the newly isolated strains alknpb1M-1 ^T and 59MF3M-4 ^T , for which the names Thalassolituus hydrocarbonoclasticus sp. nov. and Thalassolituus pacificus sp. nov. are proposed. Collectively, these findings build a phylogenetic framework for the ORB and contribute to understanding of their role in marine carbon cycling.

Biotreatment of oily sludge by a bacterial consortium: Effect of bioprocess conditions on biodegradation efficiency and bacterial community structure

We studied the biodegradation of oily sludge generated by a petroleum plant in Bahrain by a bacterial consortium (termed as AK6) under different bioprocess conditions. Biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in oily sludge (C₁₁-C₂₉) increased from 24% after two days to 99% after 9 days of incubation in cultures containing 5% (w/v) of oily sludge at 40°C. When the nitrogen source was excluded from the batch cultures, hydrocarbon biodegradation dropped to 45% within 7 days. The hydrocarbon biodegradation decreased also by increasing the salinity to 3% and the temperature above 40°C. AK6 tolerated up to 50% (w/v) oily sludge and degraded 60% of the dichloromethane-extractable oil fraction. Illumina-MiSeq analyses revealed that the AK6 consortium was mainly composed of Gammaproteobacteria (ca. 98% of total sequences), with most sequences belonging to Klebsiella (77.6% of total sequences), Enterobacter (16.7%) and Salmonella (5%). Prominent shifts in the bacterial composition of the consortium were observed when the temperature and initial sludge concentration increased, and the nitrogen source was excluded, favoring sequences belonging to Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas. The AK6 consortium is endowed with a strong oily sludge tolerance and biodegradation capability under different bioprocess conditions, where Pseudomonas spp. appear to be crucial for hydrocarbon biodegradation.

Recent advances in chemical and biological degradation of spilled oil: A review of dispersants application in the marine environment

Growing concerns over the risk of accidental releases of oil into the marine environment have emphasized our need to improve both oil spill preparedness and response strategies. Among the available spill response options, dispersants offer the advantages of breaking oil slicks into small oil droplets and promoting their dilution, dissolution, and biodegradation within the water column. Thus dispersants can reduce the probability of oil slicks at sea from reaching coastal regions and reduce their direct impact on mammals, sea birds and shoreline ecosystems. To facilitate marine oil spill response operations, especially addressing spill incidents in remote/Arctic offshore regions, an in-depth understanding of the transportation, fate and effects of naturally/chemically dispersed oil is of great importance. This review provides a synthesis of recent research results studies related to the application of dispersants at the surface and in the deep sea, the fate and transportation of naturally and chemically dispersed oil, and dispersant application in the Arctic and ice-covered waters. Future perspectives have been provided to identify the research gaps and help industries and spill response organizations develop science-based guidelines and protocols for the application of dispersants application.

Emulating Deep-Sea Bioremediation: Oil Plume Degradation by Undisturbed Deep-Sea Microbial Communities Using a High-Pressure Sampling and Experimentation System

Hydrocarbon biodegradation rates in the deep-sea have been largely determined under atmospheric pressure, which may lead to non-representative results. In this work, we aim to study the response of deep-sea microbial communities of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) to oil contamination at in situ environmental conditions and provide representative biodegradation rates. Seawater from a 600 to 1000 m depth was collected using a high-pressure (HP) sampling device equipped with a unidirectional check-valve, without depressurization upon retrieval. The sample was then passed into a HP-reactor via a piston pump without pressure disruption and used for a time-series oil biodegradation experiment at plume concentrations, with and without dispersant application, at 10 MPa and 14 °C. The experimental results demonstrated a high capacity of indigenous microbial communities in the deep EMS for alkane degradation regardless of dispersant application (>70%), while PAHs were highly degraded when oil was dispersed (>90%) and presented very low half-lives (19.4 to 2.2 days), compared to published data. To our knowledge, this is the first emulation study of deep-sea bioremediation using undisturbed deep-sea microbial communities.

ACTIVIDAD ANTIFÚNGICA Y CARACTERÍSTICAS DE PROMOCIÓN DE CRECIMIENTO VEGETAL DE Pseudomonas aeruginosa y Enterobacter sp. DEGRADADORAS DE HIDROCARBUROS AISLADAS DE SUELO CONTAMINADO

El diésel es una mezcla compleja de hidrocarburos alifáticos y aromáticos, que por su amplio uso se ha convertido en un contaminante ambiental muy frecuente. Debido a esto, es imperativo explorar alternativas viables y económicas para la remoción de dicho contaminante. El propósito del presente trabajo fue analizar la degradación de diésel por bacterias aisladas de suelo contaminado con esa mezcla de hidrocarburos, así como evaluar su actividad antagónica sobre hongos fitopatógenos, sus características de promoción del crecimiento vegetal y tolerancia a pesados. A partir del enriquecimiento en diésel como única fuente de carbono, se obtuvieron los aislados bacterianos J3 y S3, cuya identificación bioquímica y molecular reveló que corresponden a Pseudomonas aeruginosa y Enterobacter sp., respectivamente. Además, se observó que el crecimiento bacteriano fue mejor entre 2 y 5 % de diésel, mientras que el pH óptimo fue de 7,0 y 8,0 en presencia de 3 % de diésel. También, S3 mostró buen crecimiento a concentraciones de hasta 4 % de NaCl. Por otro lado, las bacterias mostraron inhibición del crecimiento micelial de los hongos fitopatógenos Alternaria sp., Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum siamense y Fusarium proliferatum. Además de características de promoción de crecimiento vegetal como producción de ácido indol acético (AIA), solubilización de fosfato, producción de sideróforos y surfactantes. También, se observó que las bacterias crecieron en presencia de metales como Zn, Cu, Ba y Pb, en concentraciones de entre 1,5 y >10 mM. En conclusión, las bacterias aisladas e identificadas en este estudio presentan características que las hacen excelentes candidatas para la remoción de hidrocarburos solas o mediante fitorremediación por sus características de promoción de crecimiento vegetal.

From Surface Water to the Deep Sea: A Review on Factors Affecting the Biodegradation of Spilled Oil in Marine Environment

Over the past century, the demand for petroleum products has increased rapidly, leading to higher oil extraction, processing and transportation, which result in numerous oil spills in coastal-marine environments. As the spilled oil can negatively affect the coastal-marine ecosystems, its transport and fates captured a significant interest of the scientific community and regulatory agencies. Typically, the environment has natural mechanisms (e.g., photooxidation, biodegradation, evaporation) to weather/degrade and remove the spilled oil from the environment. Among various oil weathering mechanisms, biodegradation by naturally occurring bacterial populations removes a majority of spilled oil, thus the focus on bioremediation has increased significantly. Helping in the marginal recognition of this promising technique for oil-spill degradation, this paper reviews recently published articles that will help broaden the understanding of the factors affecting biodegradation of spilled oil in coastal-marine environments. The goal of this review is to examine the effects of various environmental variables that contribute to oil degradation in the coastal-marine environments, as well as the factors that influence these processes. Physico-chemical parameters such as temperature, oxygen level, pressure, shoreline energy, salinity, and pH are taken into account. In general, increase in temperature, exposure to sunlight (photooxidation), dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium), shoreline energy (physical advection—waves) and diverse hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms consortium were found to increase spilled oil degradation in marine environments. In contrast, higher initial oil concentration and seawater pressure can lower oil degradation rates. There is limited information on the influences of seawater pH and salinity on oil degradation, thus warranting additional research. This comprehensive review can be used as a guide for bioremediation modeling and mitigating future oil spill pollution in the marine environment by utilizing the bacteria adapted to certain conditions.

Unique bacterial communities and potential function along the vertical gradient in the deepest marine blue hole

The Sansha Yongle Blue Hole is the deepest blue hole in the world discovered so far, while its great potential and values have not been fully exploited regarding microbial communities. A large-scale sampling was performed at different depths (0-270 m) inside the blue hole. Based on high-throughput sequencing, the diversity and richness of bacterial communities were relatively higher in oxic and euphotic layer, and at depths of 180-230 m in anoxic layer. Proteobacteria was dominant with mean relative abundance of 64.7%. As the representative genera, Thiomicrospira and Arcobacter were detected with higher abundances up to 96.1% and 31.5% in the anaerobic environment. Principal co-ordinates analysis, one-way ANOVA and network analysis highlighted the distinctive species at different depths. Correlation analysis illustrated the significant correlations between the bacteria and environmental elements of dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, pH, sulphur and nutrient. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the microbial ecosystem was characterized with infrequent and unidentified microorganisms in the deep layer. This research revealed the unique microbial ecosystem and potential functions in regulating ecosystem productivity and cycling of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen. Comprehensive and long-term investigations in the Sansha Blue Hole should be taken to conserve the peculiar ecosystem.

Factors Influencing the Bacterial Bioremediation of Hydrocarbon Contaminants in the Soil: Mechanisms and Impacts

The discharge of hydrocarbons and their derivatives to environments due to human and/or natural activities cause environmental pollution (soil, water, and air) and affect the natural functioning of an ecosystem. To minimize or eradicate environmental pollution by hydrocarbon contaminants, studies showed strategies including physical, chemical, and biological approaches. Among those strategies, the use of biological techniques (especially bacterial biodegradation) is critically important to remove hydrocarbon contaminants. The current review discusses the insights of major factors that enhance or hinder the bacterial bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminants (aliphatic, aromatic, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons) in the soil. The key factors limiting the overall hydrocarbon biodegradation are generally categorized as biotic factors and abiotic factors. Among various environmental factors, temperature range from 30 to 40°C, pH range from 5 to 8, moisture availability range from 30 to 90%, carbon/nitrogen/phosphorous (C/N/P; 100:20:1) ratio, and 10–40% of oxygen for aerobic degradation are the key factors that show positive correlation for greatest hydrocarbon biodegradation rate by altering the activities of the microbial and degradative enzymes in soil. In addition, the formation of biofilm and production of biosurfactants in hydrocarbon-polluted soil environments increase microbial adaptation to low bioavailability of hydrophobic compounds, and genes that encode for hydrocarbon degradative enzymes are critical for the potential of microbes to bioremediate soils contaminated with hydrocarbon pollutants. Therefore, this review works on the identification of factors for effective hydrocarbon biodegradation, understanding, and optimization of those factors that are essential and critical.

Microbial Diversity and Activity During the Biodegradation in Seawater of Various Substitutes to Conventional Plastic Cotton Swab Sticks

The European Parliament recently approved a new law banning single-use plastic items for 2021 such as plastic plates, cutlery, straws, cotton swabs, and balloon sticks. Transition to a bioeconomy involves the substitution of these banned products with biodegradable materials. Several materials such as polylactic acid (PLA), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), polyhydroxybutyrate-valerate (PHBV), Bioplast, and Mater-Bi could be good candidates to substitute cotton swabs, but their biodegradability needs to be tested under marine conditions. In this study, we described the microbial life growing on these materials, and we evaluated their biodegradability in seawater, compared with controls made of non-biodegradable polypropylene (PP) or biodegradable cellulose. During the first 40 days in seawater, we detected clear changes in bacterial diversity (Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene) and heterotrophic activity (incorporation of ³H-leucine) that coincided with the classic succession of initial colonization, growth, and maturation phases of a biofilm. Biodegradability of the cotton swab sticks was then tested during another 94 days under strict diet conditions with the different plastics as sole carbon source. The drastic decrease of the bacterial activity on PP, PLA, and PBS suggested no bacterial attack of these materials, whereas the bacterial activity in PBAT, Bioplast, Mater-Bi, and PHBV presented similar responses to the cellulose positive control. Interestingly, the different bacterial diversity trends observed for biodegradable vs. non-biodegradable plastics allowed to describe potential new candidates involved in the degradation of these materials under marine conditions. This better understanding of the bacterial diversity and activity dynamics during the colonization and biodegradation processes contributes to an expanding baseline to understand plastic biodegradation in marine conditions and provide a foundation for further decisions on the replacement of the banned single-used plastics.

Biodegradation of binary mixtures of octane with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene or xylene (BTEX): insights on the potential of Burkholderia, Pseudomonas and Cupriavidus isolates

The contamination of the environment by crude oil and its by-products, mainly composed of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, is a widespread problem. Biodegradation by bacteria is one of the processes responsible for the removal of these pollutants. This study was conducted to determine the abilities of Burkholderia sp. B5, Cupriavidus sp. B1, Pseudomonas sp. T1, and another Cupriavidus sp. X5 to degrade binary mixtures of octane (representing aliphatic hydrocarbons) with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, or xylene (BTEX as aromatic hydrocarbons) at a final concentration of 100 ppm under aerobic conditions. These strains were isolated from an enriched bacterial consortium (Yabase or Y consortium) that prefer to degrade aromatic hydrocarbon over aliphatic hydrocarbons. We found that B5 degraded all BTEX compounds more rapidly than octane. In contrast, B1, T1 and X5 utilized more of octane over BTX compounds. B5 also preferred to use benzene over octane with varying concentrations of up to 200 mg/l. B5 possesses alkane hydroxylase (alkB) and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23D) genes, which are responsible for the degradation of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, respectively. This study strongly supports our notion that Burkholderia played a key role in the preferential degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons over aliphatic hydrocarbons in the previously characterized Y consortium. The preferential degradation of more toxic aromatic hydrocarbons over aliphatics is crucial in risk-based bioremediation.

Comparison of Hydrocarbon-Degrading Consortia from Surface and Deep Waters of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea: Characterization and Degradation Potential

The diversity and degradation capacity of hydrocarbon-degrading consortia from surface and deep waters of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea were studied in time-series experiments. Microcosms were set up in ONR7a medium at in situ temperatures of 25 °C and 14 °C for the Surface and Deep consortia, respectively, and crude oil as the sole source of carbon. The Deep consortium was additionally investigated at 25 °C to allow the direct comparison of the degradation rates to the Surface consortium. In total, ~50% of the alkanes and ~15% of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were degraded in all treatments by Day 24. Approximately ~95% of the total biodegradation by the Deep consortium took place within 6 days regardless of temperature, whereas comparable levels of degradation were reached on Day 12 by the Surface consortium. Both consortia were dominated by well-known hydrocarbon-degrading taxa. Temperature played a significant role in shaping the Deep consortia communities with Pseudomonas and Pseudoalteromonas dominating at 25 °C and Alcanivorax at 14 °C. Overall, the Deep consortium showed a higher efficiency for hydrocarbon degradation within the first week following contamination, which is critical in the case of oil spills, and thus merits further investigation for its exploitation in bioremediation technologies tailored to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

Effect of polymer type on the colonization of plastic pellets by marine bacteria

Plastic is omnipresent in the oceans and serves as a surface for biofilm-forming microorganisms. Plastic debris comprises different polymers, which may influence microbial colonization; here, we evaluated whether polymer type affects bacterial biofilm formation. Quantifying the biofilm on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS) pellets by six marine bacterial strains (Vibrio,Pseudoalteromonas,Phaeobacter) demonstrated that each strain had a unique colonization behavior with either a preference for PS or PP over the other polymer types or no preference for a specific plastic type. PE, PP and PS pellets were exposed to natural seawater microbiota using free-living or total communities as inoculum. Microbial assembly as determined by 16S rRNA (V4) amplicon sequencing was affected by the composition of the initial inoculum and also by the plastic type. Known polymer and hydrocarbon degraders such as Paraglaciecola, Oleibacter and Hydrogenophaga were found in the plastic biofilms. Thus, on a community level, bacterial colonization on plastic is influenced by the microorganisms as well as the polymer type, and also individual strains can demonstrate polymer-specific colonization.

Initial oil concentration affects hydrocarbon biodegradation rates and bacterial community composition in seawater

During oil spills in the field or for laboratory incubation studies, different oil concentrations are often encountered or applied, yet how initial oil concentration affects biodegradation rates of hydrocarbons and the development of oil degraders remains unclear. We incubated seawater for 50 d with different oil concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 ppm). n-Alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the bacterial community were analyzed periodically. Results show that the biodegradation rates of alkanes, derived from first order kinetics, decreased with increasing oil concentration, but percent residual was ~50% regardless of the initial concentration. In contrast, the biodegradation rates of PAHs increased with concentration, and the percent residual increased with oil concentration. Increasing oil concentration resulted in increased abundances of Rhodobacterales, Altererythrobacter, and Neptuniibacter. However, Alcanivorax abundance was barely detected in 400 and 800 ppm. Overall, oil concentration critically affected the degradation of hydrocarbons and the bacterial community.

Characterization of sediment microbial communities at two sites with low hydrocarbon pollution in the southeast Gulf of Mexico

Background

Coastal ecosystems are prone to hydrocarbon pollution due to human activities, and this issue has a tremendous impact on the environment, socioeconomic consequences, and represents a hazard to humans. Bioremediation relies on the ability of bacteria to metabolize hydrocarbons with the aim of cleaning up polluted sites.

Methods

The potential of naturally occurring microbial communities as oil degraders was investigated in Sisal and Progreso, two port locations in the southeast Gulf of Mexico, both with a low level of hydrocarbon pollution. To do so, we determined the diversity and composition of bacterial communities in the marine sediment during the dry and rainy seasons using 16S rRNA sequencing. Functional profile analysis (PICRUTSt2) was used to predict metabolic functions associated with hydrocarbon degradation.

Results

We found a large bacterial taxonomic diversity, including some genera reported as hydrocarbon-degraders. Analyses of the alpha and beta diversity did not detect significant differences between sites or seasons, suggesting that location, season, and the contamination level detected here do not represent determining factors in the structure of the microbial communities. PICRUTSt2 predicted 10 metabolic functions associated with hydrocarbon degradation. Most bacterial genera with potential hydrocarbon bioremediation activity were generalists likely capable of degrading different hydrocarbon compounds. The bacterial composition and diversity reported here represent an initial attempt to characterize sites with low levels of contamination. This information is crucial for understanding the impact of eventual rises in hydrocarbon pollution.

Understanding Microbial Community Dynamics in Up-Flow Bioreactors to Improve Mitigation Strategies for Oil Souring

Oil souring occurs when H2S is generated in oil reservoirs. This not only leads to operational risks and health hazards but also increases the cost of refining crude oil. Sulfate-reducing microorganisms are considered to be the main source of the H2S that leads to oil souring. Substrate competition between nitrate-reducing and sulfate-reducing microorganisms makes biosouring mitigation via the addition of nitrate salts a viable strategy. This study explores the shift in microbial community across different phases of biosouring and mitigation. Anaerobic sand-filled columns wetted with seawater and/or oil were used to initiate the processes of sulfidogenesis, followed by mitigation with nitrate, rebound sulfidogenesis, and rebound control phases (via nitrate and low salinity treatment). Shifts in microbial community structure and function were observed across different phases of seawater and oil setups. Marine bacterial taxa (Marinobacter, Marinobacterium, Thalassolituus, Alteromonas, and Cycloclasticus) were found to be the initial responders to the application of nitrate during mitigation of sulfidogenesis in both seawater- and oil- wetted columns. Autotrophic groups (Sulfurimonas and Desulfatibacillum) were found to be higher in seawater-wetted columns compared to oil-wetted columns, suggesting the potential for autotrophic volatile fatty acid (VFA) production in oil-field aquifers when seawater is introduced. Results indicate that fermentative (such as Bacteroidetes) and oil-degrading bacteria (such as Desulfobacula toluolica) play an important role in generating electron donors in the system, which may sustain biosouring and nitrate reduction. Persistence of certain microorganisms (Desulfobacula) across different phases was observed, which may be due to a shift in metabolic lifestyle of the microorganisms across phases, or zonation based on nutrient availability in the columns. Overall results suggest mitigation strategies for biosouring can be improved by monitoring VFA concentrations and microbial community dynamics in the oil reservoirs during secondary recovery of oil.

Marine Snow Aggregates are Enriched in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Oil Contaminated Waters: Insights from a Mesocosm Study

Marine snow was implicated in the transport of oil to the seafloor during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, but the exact processes remain controversial. In this study, we investigated the concentrations and distributions of the 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine snow aggregates collected during a mesocosm experiment. Seawater only, oil in a water accommodated fraction (WAF), and Corexit-enhanced WAF (DCEWAF) were incubated for 16 d. Both WAF and DCEWAF aggregates were enriched in heavy molecular weight PAHs but depleted in naphthalene. DCEWAF aggregates had 2.6 times more total 16 PAHs than the WAF (20.5 vs. 7.8 µg/g). Aggregates in the WAF and DCEWAF incorporated 4.4% and 19.3%, respectively of the total PAHs in the mesocosm tanks. Our results revealed that marine snow sorbed and scavenged heavy molecular weight PAHs in the water column and the application of Corexit enhanced the incorporation of PAHs into the sinking aggregates.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and putative PAH-degrading bacteria in Galveston Bay, TX (USA), following Hurricane Harvey (2017)

Hurricane Harvey was the wettest hurricane in US history bringing record rainfall and widespread flooding in Houston, TX. The resulting storm- and floodwaters largely emptied into the Galveston Bay. Surface water was collected from 10 stations during five cruises to investigate the concentrations and sources of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and relative abundances of PAH-degrading bacteria. Highest PAH levels (102-167 ng/L) were detected during the first sampling event, decreasing to 36-69 ng/L within a week. Four sites had elevated concentrations of carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene that exceeded the Texas Standard for Surface Water threshold. The highest relative abundances of known PAH-degrading bacteria Burkholderiaceae, Comamonadaceae, and Sphingomonadales were detected during the first and second sampling events. PAH origins were about 60% pyrogenic, 2% petrogenic, and the remainder of mixed sources. This study improves our understanding on the fate, source, and distributions of PAHs in Galveston Bay after an extreme flooding event.

Microbial Metabolic Potential of Phenol Degradation in Wastewater Treatment Plant of Crude Oil Refinery: Analysis of Metagenomes and Characterization of Isolates

The drilling, processing and transportation of oil are the main sources of pollution in water and soil. The current work analyzes the microbial diversity and aromatic compounds degradation potential in the metagenomes of communities in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a crude oil refinery. By focusing on the degradation of phenol, we observed the involvement of diverse indigenous microbial communities at different steps of the WWTP. The anaerobic bacterial and archaeal genera were replaced by aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria through the biological treatment processes. The phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Planctomycetes were dominating at different stages of the treatment. Most of the established protein sequences of the phenol degradation key enzymes belonged to bacteria from the class Alphaproteobacteria. From 35 isolated strains, 14 were able to grow on aromatic compounds, whereas several phenolic compound-degrading strains also degraded aliphatic hydrocarbons. Two strains, Acinetobacter venetianus ICP1 and Pseudomonas oleovorans ICTN13, were able to degrade various aromatic and aliphatic pollutants and were further characterized by whole genome sequencing and cultivation experiments in the presence of phenol to ascertain their metabolic capacity in phenol degradation. When grown alone, the intermediates of catechol degradation, the meta or ortho pathways, accumulated into the growth environment of these strains. In the mixed cultures of the strains ICP1 and ICTN13, phenol was degraded via cooperation, in which the strain ICP1 was responsible for the adherence of cells and ICTN13 diminished the accumulation of toxic intermediates.

Time- and compound-dependent microbial community compositions and oil hydrocarbon degrading activities in seawater near the Chinese Zhoushan Archipelago

Marine microorganisms play an irreplaceable role in removing spilled oil. Zhoushan archipelago has one of the busiest ports and oil stockpiles in China. However, little is known about which and how fast oil-degrading microorganisms could biodegrade spilled oil here. By combining ¹⁴C-/³H-based radiotracer assays and MiSeq sequencing, we report the successive pattern of microbial oil-degrading activities and community compositions. The biodegradation rates of alkanes and PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) were significantly stimulated by oil addition, and reached their maximum after incubation for 3 and 7 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the abundances of alkB and phnAc genes increased and the bacterial communities continuously shifted. Potential oil-degrading bacteria Alcanivorax, Erythrobacter were the dominant degraders by day 3, whereas the dominant degraders shifted to C1-B045, Alteromonas, Pseudohongiella in the later period. These results provide valuable insights into the cooperative system of the versatile oil-degrading bacteria in successively biodegrading complex oil hydrocarbons in oil spills.

Effect of Various Isolated Microbial Consortiums on the Biodegradation Process of Precipitated Asphaltenes from Crude Oil

One of the serious problems in the oil industry is precipitation and deposition of asphaltenes in the different oil production stages including formation, wellbore, production tubing, flow lines, and separation units. This phenomenon causes a dramatic increase in the cost of oil production, processing, and transferring. Thus, it seems to be very necessary to use the removing methods for precipitated asphaltenes in different crude oil production and transferring stages. In this study, the ability of microorganisms for biodegradation of precipitated asphaltenes was investigated. For this purpose, four bacterial consortiums were isolated from oil-contaminated soil, crude oil, reservoir water, and oil sludge samples of an oil field located in the southwest of Iran. Based on the results of the designed experiments, by using response surface methodology (RSM) and central composite design, the bacterial consortiums were cultured in the flasks. Three levels of temperatures, salinity, pH, and initial asphaltene concentration as the substrate were considered as the parameters of culture medium and incubated growth mediums for 60 days. The maximum asphaltene biodegradation was 46.41% caused by the crude oil consortium including Staphylococcus saprophyticus sp. and Bacillus cereus sp. at 45 °C, salinity 160 g·L^-1, pH 6.5, and 25 g·L^-1 initial asphaltene concentration. Also, it was observed that the negative or positive impacts of culture media conditions such as temperature and salinity on asphaltene degradation depended on the type of the available bacterial consortium. The carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen-sulfur analysis showed that carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and in some cases, the sulfur in biodegraded samples are less than in control samples. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared analysis indicated that the alkyne groups were less resistant to biodegradation and were eliminated thoroughly after 2 months of incubation. In addition, alkane components were partially removed in treated asphaltene fraction. The parameters of culture medium were optimized by RSM, and besides, their effects on the performance of bacteria in the asphaltene biodegradation process were discussed. The validity of some available kinetic models to describe the behavior of the studied bacteria consortium was investigated, and it was observed that Tessier, Moser, and Contois models accurately predict the values of asphaltenes and biomass concentration at 30, 45, and 60 °C, respectively.

A succession of marine bacterial communities in batch reactor experiments during the degradation of five different petroleum types

Marine microbial communities might be subjected to accidental petroleum spills; however, some bacteria can degrade it, making these specific bacteria valuable for bioremediation from petroleum contamination. Thus, characterizing the microbial communities exposed to varying types of petroleum is essential. We evaluated five enriched microbial communities from the northwest Gulf of Mexico (four from the water column and one from sediments). Enrichments were performed using five types of petroleum (extra light, light, medium, heavy and extra heavy), to reveal the microbial succession using a 16S rDNA amplicon approach. Four communities were capable of degrading from extra light to heavy petroleum. However, only the community from sediment was able to degrade the extra heavy petroleum. Successional changes in the microbial communities' structures were specific for each type of petroleum where genus Dietzia, Gordonia, Microvirga, Rhizobium, Paracoccus, Thalassobaculum, Sphingomonas, Moheibacter, Acinetobacter, Pseudohongiella, Porticoccus, Pseudoalteromonas, Pseudomonas, Shewanella, and Planctomyces presented differential abundance between the treatments.

Comparative evaluation of bioremediation techniques on oil contaminated sediments in long-term recovery of benthic community health

While various bioremediation techniques have been widely used at oil spill sites, the in situ efficiency of such techniques on recovering the benthic communities in intertidal areas has not been quantified. Here, the performance of several bioremediation tools such as emulsifiers, multi-enzyme liquid (MEL), microbes, and rice-straw was evaluated by a 90-days semi-field experiment, particularly targeting recovery of benthic community. Temporal efficiency in the removal of sedimentary total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), reduction of residual toxicity, and recovery of bacterial diversity, microalgal growth, and benthic production was comprehensively determined. Concentrations of TPH and amphipod mortality for all treatments rapidly decreased within the first 10 days. In addition, the density of bacteria and microphytobenthos generally increased over time for all treatments, indicating recovery in the benthic community health. However, the recovery of some nitrifying bacteria, such as the class Nitrospinia (which are sensitive to oil components) remained incomplete (13-56%) during 90 days. Combination of microbe treatments showed rapid and effective for recovering the benthic community, but after 90 days, all treatments showed high recovery efficiency. Of consideration, the "no action" treatment showed a similar level of recovery to those of microbe and MEL treatments, indicating that the natural recovery process could prevail in certain situations.

Role of Polysaccharides in Diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and its Associated Bacteria in Hydrocarbon Presence

Diatoms secrete a significant amount of polysaccharides, which can serve as a critical organic carbon source for bacteria. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill exposed the Gulf of Mexico to substantial amounts of oil that also impacted the phytoplankton community. Increased production of exopolymeric substances was observed after this oil spill. Polysaccharides make up a major fraction of exopolymeric substances; however, their physiological role during an oil spill remains poorly understood. Here, we analyzed the role of polysaccharides in the growth and physiology of the oil-sensitive diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and how they shape the surrounding bacterial community and its activity in the presence of oil. We found that inhibition of chrysolaminarin synthesis had a negative effect on the growth of T pseudonana and intracellular monosaccharide accumulation, which in turn suppressed photosynthesis by feedback inhibition. In addition, by acting as a carbon reserve, chrysolaminarin helped in the recovery of T pseudonana in the presence of oil. Inhibition of chrysolaminarin synthesis also influenced the bacterial community in the free-living fraction but not in the phycosphere. Exposure to oil alone led to increased abundance of oil-degrading bacterial genera and the activity of exoenzyme lipase. Our data show that chrysolaminarin synthesis plays an important role in the growth and survival of T pseudonana in the presence of oil, and its inhibition can influence the composition and activity of the surrounding bacterial community.

Effect of spatial origin and hydrocarbon composition on bacterial consortia community structure and hydrocarbon biodegradation rates

Oil reserves in deep-sea sediments are currently subject to intense exploration, with associated risks of oil spills. Previous research suggests that microbial communities from deep-sea sediment (>1000m) can degrade hydrocarbons (HCs), but have a lower degradation ability than shallow (<200m) communities, probably due to in situ temperature. This study aimed to assess the effect of marine origin on microbial HC degradation potential while separating the influence of temperature, and to characterise associated HC-degrading bacterial communities. Microbial communities from 135 and 1000 m deep sediments were selectively enriched on crude oil at in situ temperatures and both consortia were subsequently incubated for 42 days at 20°C with two HC mixtures: diesel fuel or model oil. Significant HC biodegradation occurred rapidly in the presence of both consortia, especially of low molecular weight HCs and was concomitant with microbial community changes. Further, oil degradation was higher with the shallow consortium than with the deep one. Dominant HC-degrading bacteria differed based on both spatial origin of the consortia and supplemented HC types. This study provides evidence for influence of sediment spatial origin and HC composition on the selection and activity of marine HC-degrading bacterial communities and is relevant for future bioremediationdevelopments.

Growth dynamics and domoic acid production of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. in response to oil and dispersant exposure

The diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia is a common component of phytoplankton communities in the Gulf of Mexico and is potentially toxic as some species produce the potent neurotoxin domoic acid. The impact of oil and chemical dispersants on Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and domoic acid production have not yet been studied; preliminary findings from a mesocosm experiment suggest this genus may be particularly resilient. A toxicological study was conducted using a colony of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. isolated from a station off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. The cultures were exposed to a water accommodated fraction (WAF) of oil and a diluted chemically enhanced WAF (DCEWAF) which was a mix of oil and dispersant (20:1). Exposure to WAF induced a lag phase but did not inhibit growth rates once in exponential growth. Cultures grown in DCEWAF did not experience a lag phase but had significantly lower growth rates than the Control and WAF cultures. The cellular quota of domoic acid was higher in cultures treated with DCEWAF and WAF relative to their control values, and half of the domoic acid had leaked out of the cells into the surrounding seawater in the DCEWAF cultures while all the domoic acid remained inside the cells in WAF-treated cultures. These results suggest that the presence of oil could lead to toxic blooms, but that the application of dispersant could decrease bioaccumulation of domoic acid through the food web.

Potential for Microbially Mediated Natural Attenuation of Diluted Bitumen on the Coast of British Columbia (Canada)

Western Canada produces large amounts of bitumen, a heavy, highly weathered crude oil. Douglas Channel and Hecate Strait on the coast of British Columbia are two water bodies that may be impacted by a proposed pipeline and marine shipping route for diluted bitumen (dilbit). This study investigated the potential of microbial communities from these waters to mitigate the impacts of a potential dilbit spill. Microcosm experiments were set up with water samples representing different seasons, years, sampling stations, and dilbit blends. While the alkane fraction of the tested dilbit blends was almost completely degraded after 28 days, the majority of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) remained. The addition of the dispersant Corexit 9500A most often had either no effect or an enhancing effect on dilbit degradation. Dilbit-degrading microbial communities were highly variable between seasons, years, and stations, with dilbit type having little impact on community trajectories. Potential oil-degrading genera showed a clear succession pattern and were for the most part recruited from the "rare biosphere." At the community level, dispersant appeared to stimulate an accelerated enrichment of genera typically associated with hydrocarbon degradation, even in dilbit-free controls. This suggests that dispersant-induced growth of hydrocarbon degraders (and not only increased bioavailability of oil-associated hydrocarbons) contributes to the degradation-enhancing effect previously reported for Corexit 9500A.IMPORTANCE Western Canada hosts large petroleum deposits, which ultimately enter the market in the form of dilbit. Tanker-based shipping represents the primary means to transport dilbit to international markets. With anticipated increases in production to meet global energy needs, the risk of a dilbit spill is expected to increase. This study investigated the potential of microbial communities naturally present in the waters of a potential dilbit shipping lane to mitigate the effects of a spill. Here we show that microbial degradation of dilbit was mostly limited to n-alkanes, while the overall concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which represent the most toxic fraction of dilbit, decreased only slightly within the time frame of our experiments. We further investigated the effect of the oil dispersant Corexit 9500A on microbial dilbit degradation. Our results highlight the fact that dispersant-associated growth stimulation, and not only increased bioavailability of hydrocarbons and inhibition of specific genera, contributes to the overall effect of dispersant addition.

Proliferation of hydrocarbon-degrading microbes at the bottom of the Mariana Trench

BACKGROUND

The Mariana Trench is the deepest known site in the Earth's oceans, reaching a depth of ~ 11,000 m at the Challenger Deep. Recent studies reveal that hadal waters harbor distinctive microbial planktonic communities. However, the genetic potential of microbial communities within the hadal zone is poorly understood.

RESULTS

Here, implementing both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, we perform extensive analysis of microbial populations and their genetic potential at different depths in the Mariana Trench. Unexpectedly, we observed an abrupt increase in the abundance of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria at depths > 10,400 m in the Challenger Deep. Indeed, the proportion of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria at > 10,400 m is the highest observed in any natural environment on Earth. These bacteria were mainly Oleibacter, Thalassolituus, and Alcanivorax genera, all of which include species known to consume aliphatic hydrocarbons. This community shift towards hydrocarbon degraders was accompanied by increased abundance and transcription of genes involved in alkane degradation. Correspondingly, three Alcanivorax species that were isolated from 10,400 m water supplemented with hexadecane were able to efficiently degrade n-alkanes under conditions simulating the deep sea, as did a reference Oleibacter strain cultured at atmospheric pressure. Abundant n-alkanes were observed in sinking particles at 2000, 4000, and 6000 m (averaged 23.5 μg/gdw) and hadal surface sediments at depths of 10,908, 10,909, and 10,911 m (averaged 2.3 μg/gdw). The δ²H values of n-C_16/18 alkanes that dominated surface sediments at near 11,000-m depths ranged from - 79 to - 93‰, suggesting that these sedimentary alkanes may have been derived from an unknown heterotrophic source.

CONCLUSIONS

These results reveal that hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms are present in great abundance in the deepest seawater on Earth and shed a new light on potential biological processes in this extreme environment.

Urea dynamics during Lake Taihu cyanobacterial blooms in China

Lake Taihu, the third largest freshwater lake in China, suffers from harmful cyanobacteria blooms caused by Microcystis spp., which do not fix nitrogen (N). Reduced N (i.e., NH₄⁺, urea and other labile organic N compounds) is an important factor affecting the growth of Microcystis. As the world use of urea as fertilizer has escalated during the past decades, an understanding of how urea cycling relates to blooms of Microcystis is critical to predicting, controlling and alleviating the problem. In this study, the cycling rates of urea-N in Lake Taihu ranged from non-detectable to 1.37 μmol N L^-1 h^-1 for regeneration, and from 0.042 μmol N L^-1 h^-1 to 2.27 μmol N L^-1 h^-1 for potential urea-N removal. The fate of urea-N differed between light and dark incubations. Increased ¹⁵NH₄⁺ accumulated and higher quantities of the removed urea-¹⁵N remained in the ¹⁵NH₄⁺ form were detected in the dark than in the light. A follow-up incubation experiment with ¹⁵N-urea confirmed that Microcystis can grow on urea but its effects on urea dynamics were minor, indicating that Microcystis was not the major factor causing the observed fates of urea under different light conditions in Lake Taihu. Bacterial community composition and predicted functional gene data suggested that heterotrophic bacteria metabolized urea, even though Microcystis spp. was the dominant bloom organism.

Oil-Spill Triggered Shift in Indigenous Microbial Structure and Functional Dynamics in Different Marine Environmental Matrices

Microbial degradation has long been recognized as the key rescue mechanism in shaping the oil polluted marine environments and the role of indigenous populations or their functional genomics have never been explored from Indian marine environments, post an oil spill event. In the current study, high throughput metagenomic analysis, PLFA profiling and mass spectrophotometric analysis was performed in combination with metabolomics to capture signature variations among the microbial communities in sediment, water and laboratory enrichments. Contrary to the previous reports, the bloom of Pseudomonadales (specifically genus Acinetobacter) in oiled sediment and Methylococcales in oiled water outnumbered the relative abundance of Alcanivorax in response to hydrocarbon contamination. Overall enhancement of xenobiotic degradation was suggested by metabolomic analysis in sediment and water post the spill event and varying quantitative assemblage of enzymes were found to be involved in hydrocarbon utilization. Laboratory enrichments revealed the competitive advantage of sediment communities over the water communities although unique taxa belonging to the later were also found to be enriched under in vitro conditions. Simultaneous analysis of sediment and water in the study provided explicit evidences on existence of differential microbial community dynamics, offering insight into possibilities of formulating nature identical solutions for hydrocarbon pollution.

In situ biodegradation, photooxidation and dissolution of petroleum compounds in Arctic seawater and sea ice

In pristine sea ice-covered Arctic waters the potential of natural attenuation of oil spills has yet to be uncovered, but increasing shipping and oil exploitation may bring along unprecedented risks of oil spills. We deployed adsorbents coated with thin oil films for up to 2.5 month in ice-covered seawater and sea ice in Godthaab Fjord, SW Greenland, to simulate and investigate in situ biodegradation and photooxidation of dispersed oil. GC-MS-based chemometric methods for oil fingerprinting were used to identify characteristic signatures for dissolution, biodegradation and photooxidation. In sub-zero temperature seawater, fast degradation of n-alkanes was observed with estimated half-life times of ∼7 days. PCR amplicon sequencing and qPCR quantification of bacterial genes showed that a biofilm with a diverse microbial community colonised the oil films, yet a population related to the psychrophilic hydrocarbonoclastic gammaproteobacterium Oleispira antarctica seemed to play a key role in n-alkane degradation. Although Oleispira populations were also present in sea ice, we found that biofilms in sea ice had 25 to 100 times lower bacterial densities than in seawater, which explained the non-detectable n-alkane degradation in sea ice. Fingerprinting revealed that photooxidation, but not biodegradation, transformed polycyclic aromatic compounds through 50 cm-thick sea ice and in the upper water column with removal rates up to ∼1% per day. Overall, our results showed a fast biodegradation of n-alkanes in sea ice-covered seawater, but suggested that oils spills will expose the Arctic ecosystem to bio-recalcitrant PACs over prolonged periods of time.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) producing and oil degrading bacteria isolated from the northern Gulf of Mexico

Sinking marine oil snow was found to be a major mechanism in the transport of spilled oil from the surface to the deep sea following the Deepwater Horizon (DwH) oil spill. Marine snow formation is primarily facilitated by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which are mainly composed of proteins and carbohydrates secreted by microorganisms. While numerous bacteria have been identified to degrade oil, there is a paucity of knowledge on bacteria that produce EPS in response to oil and Corexit exposure in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM). In this study, we isolated bacteria from surface water of the nGoM that grow on oil or Corexit dispersant. Among the 100 strains isolated, nine were identified to produce remarkable amounts of EPS. 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed that six isolates (strains C1, C5, W10, W11, W14, W20) belong to the genus Alteromonas; the others were related to Thalassospira (C8), Aestuariibacter (C12), and Escherichia (W13a). The isolates preferably degraded alkanes (17–77%), over polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (0.90–23%). The EPS production was determined in the presence of a water accommodated fraction (WAF) of oil, a chemical enhanced WAF (CEWAF), Corexit, and control. The highest production of visible aggregates was found in Corexit followed by CEWAF, WAF, and control; indicating that Corexit generally enhanced EPS production. The addition of WAF and Corexit did not affect the carbohydrate content, but significantly increased the protein content of the EPS. On the average, WAF and CEWAF treatments had nine to ten times more proteins, and Corexit had five times higher than the control. Our results reveal that Alteromonas and Thalassospira, among the commonly reported bacteria following the DwH spill, produce protein rich EPS that could have crucial roles in oil degradation and marine snow formation. This study highlights the link between EPS production and bacterial oil-degrading capacity that should not be overlooked during spilled oil clearance.

Pressure and temperature effects on deep-sea hydrocarbon-degrading microbial communities in subarctic sediments

The Hatton-Rockall Basin (North-East Atlantic) is an area with potential for deep-sea (2,900 m) hydrocarbon exploration. Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, many investigations into the responses of sediment microbial communities to oil pollution have been undertaken. However, hydrostatic pressure is a parameter that is often omitted due to the technical difficulties associated with conducting experiments at high pressure (>10 MPa). In this study, sediments from 2,900 m in the Hatton-Rockall Basin, following a one-week decompression period in a temperature-controlled room at 5°C, were incubated in factorial combinations of 0.1 and 30 MPa, 5 and 20°C, and contamination with a hydrocarbon mixture or uncontaminated controls to evaluate the effect of these environmental variables on the bacterial community composition. Our results revealed varying effects of pressure, temperature, and oil contamination on the composition of the bacterial community within the sediment. Temperature was the strongest determinant of differences in the bacterial community structure between samples followed by pressure. Oil contamination did not exert a strong change in the sediment bacterial community structure when pressure and temperature conditions were held at in situ levels (30 MPa and 5°C). The γ-proteobacteria Pseudomonas and Colwellia, and several Bacteroidetes dominated communities at 30 MPa. In contrast, hydrocarbon degraders such as Halomonas, Alcanivorax, and Marinobacter decreased in relative abundance at the same pressure. This study highlights the importance of considering hydrostatic pressure in ex situ investigations into hydrocarbon-degrading deepwater microbial communities.

Bioprospecting for microbes with potential hydrocarbon remediation activity on the northwest coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, using DNA sequencing

Coastal environments harbor diverse microbial communities, which can contain genera with potential bioremediation activity. Next-generation DNA sequencing was used to identify bacteria to the genus level in water and sediment samples collected from the open ocean, shoreline, wetlands and freshwater upwellings on the northwest coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Supported by an extensive literature review, a phylogenetic investigation of the communities was done using reconstruction of unobserved states software (PICRUSt) to predict metagenome functional content from the sequenced 16S gene in all the samples. Bacterial genera were identified for their potential hydrocarbon bioremediation activity. These included generalist genera commonly reported in hydrocarbon-polluted areas and petroleum reservoirs, as well as specialists such as Alcanivorax and Cycloclasticus. The highest readings for bacteria with potential hydrocarbon bioremediation activity were for the genera Vibrio, Alteromonas, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Burkholderia, Acidovorax and Pseudoalteromonas from different environments in the study area. Some genera were identified only in specific sites; for example, Aquabacterium and Polaromonas were found only in freshwater upwellings. Variation in genera distribution was probably due to differences in environmental conditions in the sampled zones. Bacterial diversity was high in the study area and included numerous genera with known bioremediation activity. Functional prediction of the metagenome indicated that the studied bacterial communities would most probably degrade toluene, naphthalene, chloroalkane and chloroalkene, with lower degradation proportions for aromatic hydrocarbons, fluorobenzoate and xylene. Differences in predicted degradation existed between sediments and water, and between different locations.

Bacterial Diversity and the Geochemical Landscape in the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico

Marine sediments are an example of one of the most complex microbial habitats. These bacterial communities play an important role in several biogeochemical cycles in the marine ecosystem. In particular, the Gulf of Mexico has a ubiquitous concentration of hydrocarbons in its sediments, representing a very interesting niche to explore. Additionally, the Mexican government has opened its oil industry, offering several exploration and production blocks in shallow and deep water in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico (swGoM), from which there are no public results of conducted studies. Given the higher risk of large-scale oil spills, the design of contingency plans and mitigation activities before oil exploitation is of growing concern. Therefore, a bacterial taxonomic baseline profile is crucial to understanding the impact of any eventual oil spill. Here, we show a genus level taxonomic profile to elucidate the bacterial baseline, pointing out richness and relative abundance, as well as relationships with 79 abiotic parameters, in an area encompassing ∼150,000 km2, including a region where the exploitation of new oil wells has already been authorized. Our results describe for the first time the bacterial landscape of the swGoM, establishing a bacterial baseline "core" of 450 genera for marine sediments in this region. We can also differentiate bacterial populations from shallow and deep zones of the swGoM based on their community structure. Shallow sediments have been chronically exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons, unlike deep zones. Our results reveal that the bacterial community structure is particularly enriched with hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria in the shallow zone, where a greater aromatic hydrocarbon concentration was determined. Differences in the bacterial communities in the swGoM were also observed through a comprehensive comparative analysis relative to various marine sediment sequencing projects, including sampled sites from the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. This study in the swGoM provides clues to the bacterial population adaptation to the ubiquitous presence of hydrocarbons and reveals organisms such as Thioprofundum bacteria with potential applications in ecological surveillance. This resource will allow us to differentiate between natural conditions and alterations generated by oil extraction activities, which, in turn, enables us to assess the environmental impact of such activities.

Assessment of the bacterial community structure in shallow and deep sediments of the Perdido Fold Belt region in the Gulf of Mexico

The Mexican region of the Perdido Fold Belt (PFB), in northwestern Gulf of Mexico (GoM), is a geological province with important oil reservoirs that will be subjected to forthcoming oil exploration and extraction activities. To date, little is known about the native microbial communities of this region, and how these change relative to water depth. In this study we assessed the bacterial community structure of surficial sediments by high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene at 11 sites in the PFB, along a water column depth gradient from 20 to 3,700 m, including five shallow (20–600 m) and six deep (2,800–3,700 m) samples. The results indicated that OTUs richness and diversity were higher for shallow sites (OTUs = 2,888.2 ± 567.88; H′ = 9.6 ± 0.85) than for deep sites (OTUs = 1,884.7 ± 464.2; H′ = 7.74 ± 1.02). Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination revealed that shallow microbial communities grouped separately from deep samples. Additionally, the shallow sites plotted further from each other on the NMDS whereas samples from the deeper sites (abyssal plains) plotted much more closely to each other. These differences were related to depth, redox potential, sulfur concentration, and grain size (lime and clay), based on the environmental variables fitted with the axis of the NMDS ordination. In addition, differential abundance analysis identified 147 OTUs with significant fold changes among the zones (107 from shallow and 40 from deep sites), which constituted 10 to 40% of the total relative abundances of the microbial communities. The most abundant OTUs with significant fold changes in shallow samples corresponded to Kordiimonadales, Rhodospirillales, Desulfobacterales (Desulfococcus), Syntrophobacterales and Nitrospirales (GOUTA 19, BD2-6, LCP-6), whilst Chromatiales, Oceanospirillales (Amphritea, Alcanivorax), Methylococcales, Flavobacteriales, Alteromonadales (Shewanella, ZD0117) and Rhodobacterales were the better represented taxa in deep samples. Several of the OTUs detected in both deep and shallow sites have been previously related to hydrocarbons consumption. Thus, this metabolism seems to be well represented in the studied sites, and it could abate future hydrocarbon contamination in this ecosystem. The results presented herein, along with biological and physicochemical data, constitute an available reference for further monitoring of the bacterial communities in this economically important region in the GoM.

Rapid alterations to marine microbiota communities following an oil spill

Field data from the first several days after an oil spill is rare but crucial for our understanding of a spill's impact on marine microbiota given their short generation times. Field data collected within days of the Texas City "Y" oil spill showed that exposure to crude oil can rapidly imbalance populations of marine microbiota, which leads to the proliferation of more resistant organisms. Vibrionales bacteria were up to 48 times higher than background concentrations at the most impacted sites and populations of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum texanum increased significantly as well. Laboratory microcosm experiments with a natural plankton community showed that P. texanum grew significantly faster under oiled conditions but monocultures of P. texanum did not. Additional laboratory experiments with natural communities from Tampa Bay, Florida showed similar results although a different species dominated, P. minimum. In both cases, tolerance to the presence of crude oil was enhanced by higher sensitivity of grazers led to a release from grazing pressure and allows Prorocentrum species to dominate after an oil spill. The results suggest careful monitoring for Vibrionales and Prorocentrum during future spills would be beneficial given the potential implications to human health.

Hydrocarbon degradation and response of seafloor sediment bacterial community in the northern Gulf of Mexico to light Louisiana sweet crude oil

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout resulted in the deposition to the seafloor of up to 4.9% of 200 million gallons of oil released into the Gulf of Mexico. The petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations near the wellhead were high immediately after the spill, but returned to background levels a few years after the spill. Microbial communities in the seafloor are thought to be responsible for the degradation of hydrocarbons, however, our knowledge is primarily based upon gene diversity surveys and hydrocarbon concentration in field sediment samples. Here, we investigated the oil degradation potential and changes in bacterial community by amending seafloor sediment collected near the DWH site with crude oil and both oil and Corexit dispersant. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were rapidly degraded during the first 30 days of incubation, while alkanes were degraded more slowly. With the degradation of hydrocarbons, the relative abundances of Colwelliaceae, Alteromonadaceae, Methylococales, Alcanivorax, Bacteriovorax, and Phaeobacter increased remarkably. However, the abundances of oil-degrading bacteria changed with oil chemistry. Colwelliaceae decreased with increasing oil degradation, whereas Alcanivorax and Methylococcales increased considerably. We assembled seven genomes from the metagenome, including ones belonging to Colwellia, Alteromonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, the newly reported genus Woeseia, and candidate phylum NC10, all of which possess a repertoire of genes for hydrocarbon degradation. Moreover, genes related to hydrocarbon degradation were highly enriched in the oiled treatment, suggesting that the hydrocarbons were biodegraded, and that the indigenous microflora have a remarkable potential for the natural attenuation of spilled oil in the deep-sea surface sediment.
