Effect of Heavy Metals Pollution on Soil Microbial Diversity and Bermudagrass Genetic Variation

Spatial and temporal characteristics of microbial communities in the Seine river in the greater Paris area under anthropogenic perturbation

Microorganisms play an important role in maintaining the proper functioning of river ecosystems and are promising candidates for environmental indicators. They are also highly sensitive to environmental changes. It is necessary to have basic knowledge about them in order to know the ecological status of river ecosystem. To our knowglege, there is very little information on the status of microorganisms in surface water of the Seine River, although the Seine River is one of the rivers that suffers the greatest impact from humain activities in the world due to a weak dilution effect. It is therefore necessary to carry out a microbial analysis to assess the ecological status of the Seine River and to use it as a reference to compare with the future state when, for instance, new disinfection technologies of wastewater are implemented. To this end, the microbial communities of the Seine surface water were analyzed, taking into account the spatial effect, including the tributaries, and from upstream to downstream of the Paris conurbation and the temporal aspect, with a monitoring over 4 seasons. The results showed that the microbiome of the water is highly diverse and involved a variety of functions. The main phyla making up the surface water microbiome were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, while other minor phyla were Deinococcota, Patescibacteria, Gemmatimonadota, Cyanobacteria, Bdellovibrionota, Acidobacteriota, Campilobacterota, Myxococcota, and Desulfobacterota. Overall, the microbial community did not change spatially (with the exception of some minor differences between upstream and downstream), but did vary seasonally. The main factors influencing this microbiome were temperature, nitrate and orthophosphate concentrations. The main predicted functions were related to cell metabolism, in particular carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, energy, vitamins and cofactors, and cell mobility. The microbial compositions showed a strong balance between microbial groups and were involved in the degradation of recalcitrant compounds.

Responses of soil and rhizosphere microbial communities to Cd-hyperaccumulating willows and Cd contamination

BACKGROUND

The pollution of soil by heavy metals, particularly Cd, is constitutes a critical international environmental concern. Willow species are renowned for their efficacy in the phytoremediation of heavy metals owing to their high Cd absorption rate and rapid growth. However, the mechanisms underlying microbial regulation for high- and low-accumulating willow species remain poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated the responses of soil and rhizosphere microbial communities to high- and low-Cd-accumulating willows and Cd contamination. We analyzed soil properties were analyzed in bulk soil (SM) and rhizosphere soil (RM) planted with high-accumulating (H) and low-accumulating (L) willow species.

RESULTS

Rhizosphere soil for different willow species had more NH4+ than that of bulk soil, and RM-H soil had more than RM-L had. The available phosphorus content was greater in hyper-accumulated species than it was in lower-accumulated species, especially in RM-H. Genome sequencing of bacterial and fungal communities showed that RM-L exhibited the highest bacterial diversity, whereas RM-H displayed the greatest richness than the other groups. SM-L exhibited the highest diversity and richness of fungal communities. Ralstonia emerged as the predominant bacterium in RM-H, whereas Basidiomycota and Cercozoa were the most enriched fungi in SM-H. Annotation of the N and C metabolism pathways revealed differential patterns: expression levels of NRT2, NarB, nirA, nirD, nrfA, and nosZ were highest in RM-H, demonstrating the effects of NO3-and N on the high accumulation of Cd in RM-H. The annotated genes associated with C metabolism indicated a preference for the tricarboxylic pathway in RM-H, whereas the hydroxypropionate-hydroxybutyrate cycle was implicated in C sequestration in SM-L.

CONCLUSIONS

These contribute to elucidation of the mechanism underlying high Cd accumulation in willows, particularly in respect of the roles of microbes and N and C utilization. This will provide valuable insights for repairing polluted soil using N and employing organic acids to improve heavy metal remediation efficiency.

Revitalizing contaminated lands: A state-of-the-art review on the remediation of mine-tailings using phytoremediation and genomic approaches

The mining industry has historically served as a critical reservoir of essential raw materials driving global economic progress. Nevertheless, the consequential by-product known as mine tailings has consistently produced a substantial footprint of environmental contamination. With annual discharges of mine tailings surpassing 10 billion tons globally, the need for effective remediation strategies is more pressing than ever as traditional physical and chemical remediation techniques are hindered by their high costs and limited efficacy. Phytoremediation utilizing plants for remediation of polluted soil has developed as a promising and eco-friendly approach to addressing mine tailings contamination. Furthermore, sequencing of genomic DNA and transcribed RNA extracted from mine tailings presents a pivotal opportunity to provide critical supporting insights for activities directed towards the reconstruction of ecosystem functions on contaminated lands. This review explores the growing prominence of phytoremediation and metagenomics as an ecologically sustainable techniques for rehabilitating mine-tailings. The present study envisages that plant species such as Solidago chilensis, Festuca arundinacea, Lolium perenne, Polygonum capitatum, Pennisetum purpureum, Maireana brevifolia, Prosopis tamarugo etc. could be utilized for the remediation of mine-tailings. Furthermore, a critical evaluation of the organic and inorganic ammendments that optimize conditions for the remediation of mine tailings is also provided. The focus of this review extends to the exploration of environmental genomics to characterize microbial communities in mining sites. By delving into the multifaceted dimensions of phytoremediation and genomics for mine tailings, this study contributes to the ongoing efforts to revitalize contaminated lands for a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Microbial assisted multifaceted amelioration processes of heavy-metal remediation: a clean perspective toward sustainable and greener future

Rapidly increasing heavy metal waste has adversely affected the environment and the Earth's health. The lack of appropriate remediation technologies has worsened the issue globally, especially in developing countries. Heavy-metals contaminants have severely impacted the environment and led to devastating conditions owing to their abundance and reactivity. As they are nondegradable, the potential risk increases even at a low concentration. However, heavy-metal remediation has increased with the up-gradation of technologies and integration of new approaches. Also, of all the treatment methodologies, microbial-assisted multifaceted approach for ameliorating heavy metals is a promising strategy for propagating the idea of a green and sustainable environment with minimal waste aggregation. Microbial remediation combined with different biotechniques could aid in unraveling new methods for eradicating heavy metals. Thus, the present review focuses on various microbial remediation approaches and their affecting factors, enabling recapitulation of the interplay between heavy-metals ions and microorganisms. Additionally, heavy-metals remediation mechanisms adapted by microorganisms, the role of genetically modified (GM) microorganisms, life cycle assessment (LCA), techno-economic assessment (TEA) limitations, and prospects of microbial-assisted amelioration of heavy-metals have been elaborated in the current review with focus toward "sustainable and greener future."

Single and Combined Effects of Phenanthrene and Silver Nanoparticles on Denitrification Processes in Coastal Marine Sediments

The increasing production and utilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and commercial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have raised concerns about their potential environmental release, with coastal sediments as a substantial sink. To better understanding the effects of these contaminants on denitrification processes in coastal marine sediments, a short-term exposure simulation experiment was conducted. We investigated the effects of single and combined contamination of phenanthrene (Phe) and AgNPs on denitrification processes in a coastal marine sediment. Results showed that all contaminated treatment groups had different degrees of inhibitory effect on denitrification activity, denitrifying enzyme activity, total bacteria count and denitrifying genes. The inhibitory effect sequence of each treatment group was combined treatment > AgNPs treatment > Phe treatment. Moreover, the inhibitory effects of denitrifying genes were much larger than that of total bacteria count, indicating that the pollutants had specific toxic effects on denitrifying bacteria. The sequence of sensitivity of three reduction process to pollutants was N2O > NO2- > NO3-. All contaminated treatment groups could increase NO3-, NO2- and N2O accumulation. Furthermore, according to the linear relationship between functional gene or reductase and denitrification process, we also found that the abundance of denitrifying genes could better predict the influence of Phe and AgNPs on sediment denitrification than the denitrifying bacterial diversity. In addition, at the genus level, the community structure of nirS- and nosZ-type denitrifying bacteria changed dramatically, while changes at the phylum level were comparatively less pronounced. Single and combined contamination of Phe and AgNPs could reduce the dominance of Pseudomonas, which may lead to a potential slow-down in the degradation of Phe and inhibition of denitrification, especially the combined contamination. Overall, our study revealed that combined contamination of Phe and AgNPs could lead to an increase in NO3-, NO2- and N2O accumulation in coastal sediment, which poses a risk of eutrophication in coastal areas, exacerbates the greenhouse effect and has adverse effects on global climate change.

Assessment of the changes in growth, photosynthetic traits and gene expression in Cynodon dactylon against drought stress

Drought stress considered a key restrictive factor for a warm-season bermudagrass growth during summers in China. Genotypic variation against drought stress exists among bermudagrass (Cynodon sp.), but the selection of highly drought-tolerant germplasm is important for its growth in limited water regions and for future breeding. Our study aimed to investigate the most tolerant bermudagrass germplasm among thirteen, along latitude and longitudinal gradient under a well-watered and drought stress condition. Current study included high drought-resistant germplasm, "Tianshui" and "Linxiang", and drought-sensitive cultivars; "Zhengzhou" and "Cixian" under drought treatments along longitude and latitudinal gradients, respectively. Under water deficit conditions, the tolerant genotypes showed over-expression of a dehydrin gene cdDHN4, antioxidant genes Cu/ZnSOD and APX which leads to higher antioxidant activities to scavenge the excessive reactive oxygen species and minimizing the membrane damage. It helps in maintenance of cell membrane permeability and osmotic adjustment by producing organic osmolytes. Proline an osmolyte has the ability to keep osmotic water potential and water use efficiency high via stomatal conductance and maintain transpiration rate. It leads to optimum CO2 assimilation rate, high chlorophyll contents for photosynthesis and elongation of leaf mesophyll, palisade and thick spongy cells. Consequently, it results in elongation of leaf length, stolon and internode length; plant height and deep rooting system. The CdDHN4 gene highly expressed in "Tianshui" and "Youxian", Cu/ZnSOD gene in "Tianshui" and "Linxiang" and APX gene in "Shanxian" and "Linxiang". The genotypes "Zhongshan" and "Xiaochang" showed no gene expression under water deficit conditions. Our results indicate that turfgrass show morphological modifications firstly when subjected to drought stress; however the gene expression is directly associated and crucial for drought tolerance in bermudagrass. Hence, current research has provided excellent germplasm of drought tolerant bermudagrass for physiological and molecular study and future breeding.

Biogenic manganese oxides promote metal(loid) remediation by shaping microbial communities in biological aqua crust

Biological aqua crust (biogenic aqua crust-BAC) is a potentially sustainable solution for metal(loid) bioremediation in global water using solar energy. However, the key geochemical factors and underlying mechanisms shaping microbial communities in BAC remain poorly understood. The current study aimed at determining the in situ metal(loid) distribution and the key geochemical factors related to microbial community structure and metal(loid)-related genes in BAC of a representative Pb/Zn tailing pond. Here we showed that abundant metal(loid)s (e.g. Pb, As) were co-distributed with Mn/Fe-rich minerals (e.g. biogenic Mn oxide, FeOOH) in BAC. Biogenic Mn oxide (i.e. Mn) was the most dominant factor in shaping microbial community structure in BAC and source tailings. Along with the fact that keystone species (e.g. Burkholderiales, Haliscomenobacter) have the potential to promote Mn ion oxidization and particle agglomeration, as well as Mn is highly associated with metal(loid)-related genes, especially genes related to As redox (e.g. arsC, aoxA), and Cd transport (e.g. zipB), biogenic Mn oxides thus effectively enhance metal(loid) remediation by accelerating the formation of organo-mineral aggregates in biofilm-rich BAC system. Our study indicated that biogenic Mn oxides may play essential roles in facilitating in situ metal(loid) bioremediation in BAC of mine drainage.

Trichoderma Inoculation Alleviates Cd and Pb-Induced Toxicity and Improves Growth and Physiology of Vigna radiata (L.)

Heavy metals (HMs) pose a serious threat to agricultural productivity. Therefore, there is a need to find sustainable approaches to combat HM stressors in agriculture. In this study, we isolated Trichoderma sp. TF-13 from metal-polluted rhizospheric soil, which has the ability to resist 1600 and 1200 μg mL-1 cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), respectively. Owing to its remarkable metal tolerance, this fungal strain was applied for bioremediation of HMs in Vigna radiata (L.). Strain TF-13 produced siderophore, salicylic acid (SA; 43.4 μg mL-1) and 2,3-DHBA (21.0 μg mL-1), indole-3-acetic acid, ammonia, and ACC deaminase under HM stressed conditions. Increasing concentrations of tested HM ions caused severe reduction in overall growth of plants; however, Trichoderma sp. TF-13 inoculation significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased the growth and physiological traits of HM-treated V. radiata. Interestingly, Trichoderma sp. TF-13 improved germination rate (10%), root length (26%), root biomass (32%), and vigor index (12%) of V. radiata grown under 25 μg Cd kg-1 soil. Additionally, Trichoderma inoculation showed a significant (p ≤ 0.05) increase in total chlorophyll, chl a, chl b, carotenoid content, root nitrogen (N), and root phosphorus (P) of 100 μg Cd kg-1 soil-treated plants over uninoculated treatment. Furthermore, enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant activities of Trichoderma inoculated in metal-treated plants were improved. For instance, strain TF-13 increased proline (37%), lipid peroxidation (56%), catalase (35%), peroxidase (42%), superoxide dismutase (27%), and glutathione reductase (39%) activities in 100 μg Pb kg-1 soil-treated plants. The uptake of Pb and Cd in root/shoot tissues was decreased by 34/39 and 47/38% in fungal-inoculated and 25 μg kg-1 soil-treated plants. Thus, this study demonstrates that stabilizing metal mobility in the rhizosphere through Trichoderma inoculation significantly reduced the detrimental effects of Cd and Pb toxicity in V. radiata and also enhanced development under HM stress conditions.

Unlocking the potential of biochar in the remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals for sustainable agriculture

Agricultural soils contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) impose a threat to the environmental and to human health. Amendment with biochar could be an eco-friendly and cost-effective option to decrease HMs in contaminated soil. This paper reviews the application of biochar as a soil amendment to immobilise HMs in contaminated soil. We discuss the technologies of its preparation, their specific properties, and effect on the bioavailability of HMs. Biochar stabilises HMs in contaminated soil, enhance the overall quality of the contaminated soil, and significantly reduce HM uptake by plants, making it an option in soil remediation for HM contamination. Biochar enhances the physical (e.g. bulk density, soil structure, water holding capacity), chemical (e.g. cation exchange capacity, pH, nutrient availability, ion exchange, complexes), and biological properties (e.g. microbial abundance, enzymatic activities) of contaminated soil. Biochar also enhances soil fertility, improves plant growth, and reduces the plant availability of HMs. Various field studies have shown that biochar application reduces the bioavailability of HMs from contaminated soil while increasing crop yield. The review highlights the positive effects of biochar by reducing HM bioavailability in contaminated soils. Future work is recommended to ensure that biochars offer a safe and sustainable solution to remediate soils contaminated with HMs.

Initial evidence on the effect of copper on global cropland nitrogen cycling: A meta-analysis

Copper (Cu) is a key cofactor in ammonia monooxygenase functioning responsible for the first step of nitrification, but its excess availability impairs soil microbial functions and plant growth. Yet, the impact of Cu on nitrogen (N) cycling and process-related variables in cropland soils remains unexplored globally. Through a meta-analysis of 1209-paired and 319-single observations from 94 publications, we found that Cu (Cu addition or Cu-polluted soil) reduced soil potential nitrification by 33.8% and nitrite content by 73.5% due to reduced soil enzyme activities of nitrification and urease, microbial biomass content, and ammonia oxidizing archaea abundance. The response ratio of potential nitrification decreased with increasing Cu concentration, soil total N, and clay content. We further noted that soil potential nitrification inhibited by 46.5% only when Cu concentration was higher than 150 mg kg-1, while low Cu concentration (less than 150 mg kg-1) stimulated soil nitrate by 99.0%. Increasing initial soil Cu content stimulated gross N mineralization rate due to increased soil organic carbon and total N, but inhibited gross nitrification rate, which ultimately stimulated gross N immobilization rate as a result of increased the residence time of ammonium. This resulted in a lower ratio of gross nitrification rate to gross N immobilization rate, implying a lower potential risk of N loss as evidenced by decreased nitrous oxide emissions with increasing initial soil Cu content. Our analysis offers initial global evidence that Cu has an important role in controlling soil N availability and loss through its effect on N production and consumption.

Assessing heavy metal contamination in Amomum villosum Lour. fruits from plantations in Southern China: Soil-fungi-plant interactions

Amomum villosum Lour. fruit is a common healthy food widely cultivated in southern China. Heavy metal contamination of farmland soils has becomes a serious environmental concern in China. Heavy metals in soil can be introduced into the food chain and pose health risks to humans. However, microbial communities may play beneficial roles in plants grown in metal-polluted soils. This study aimed to assess the potential health risks of heavy metals in soils and A. villosum fruits from different production areas and to explore the soil-microbe-plant regulation pattern for heavy metals in A. villosum fruits. Soil and A. villosum fruit samples were collected from nine planting fields in four provinces of southern China. The results showed that soils from seven areas were polluted with heavy metals to different degrees. Cr and Mn were the most serious contaminating elements. However, the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruit was negligible with no expected human health risks. Partial least squares path analysis of structural equation modeling showed that the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruits was influenced by multiple factors. More importantly, the PLS-SEM revealed that the heavy metal content in A. villosum fruits was indirectly affected by soil heavy metals through the regulation of the microbial community. Furthermore, some fungal phyla (e.g., Ascomycota and Chytridiomycota) and genera (e.g., Mucor) were related to the heavy metal content in the soil and in A. villosum fruits. The results of this study verified that soil fungal community play an important role in the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruits. Using fungi provides a potential biological strategy for reducing the health risk posed by heavy metals in food.

Assessing microbial degradation potential of methylmercury in different types of paddy soil through short-term incubation

The neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in paddy soils can accumulate in rice grains. Microbial demethylation is an important pathway of MeHg degradation in soil, but the effect of soil type on microbial degradation of MeHg remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated MeHg degradation in eight typical paddy soils and analyzed the associations between soil physiochemical properties and microbial degradation efficiencies of MeHg. Results showed that MeHg was significantly degraded in unsterilized paddy soils, and the microbial degradation efficiency ranged from 10.8% to 64.6% after a 30-day incubation. The high microbial degradation efficiency of MeHg was observed in the soils with high levels of clay content, whereas relatively low degradation efficiency was found in the red paddy soils. We identified that Paenibacillaceae was the most important microbial predictor of MeHg degradation and was positively correlated with the degradation efficiency in the soils. The abundances of these microbial taxa associated with MeHg degradation were positively correlated with clay content. In addition, Eh, pH, and SOC could influence microbial degradation of MeHg by regulating certain microbial communities. Our results indicate that soil type is crucial in driving MeHg degradation, which has important implications for the mitigation of MeHg pollution in various croplands.

The impact of maize straw incorporation on arsenic and cadmium availability, transformation and microbial communities in alkaline-contaminated soils

Increasing evidence of the uncertainty of crop straw returning in heavy metal-contaminated soil is a significant concern. The present study investigated the influence of 1 and 2% maize straws (MS) amendment on As and Cd bioavailability in two different alkaline soils (A-industrial and B-irrigation) after 56 days of ageing. Adding MS to the two soils decreased the pH by 1.28 (A soil) and 1.13 (B soil) and increased the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 54.40 mg/kg (A soil) and 100.00 mg/kg (B soil) during the study period. After 56 days of ageing, the overall NaHCO3-As and DTPA-Cd increased by 40% and 33% (A) and 39% and 41% (B) soils, respectively. The MS additions increased the alteration of As and Cd exchangeable and residual fractions, whereas advanced solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed that alkyl C and alkyl O-C-O in A soil and alkyl C, Methoxy C/N-alkyl, and alkyl O-C-O in B soil significantly contributed to the As and Cd mobilisation. Collectively, 16 S rRNA analyses revealed Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria and Bacillus promoted the As and Cd mobilisation following the MS addition, while principle component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that bacterial proliferation significantly influenced MS decomposition, resulting in As and Cd mobilisation in the two soils. Overall, the study highlights the implications of applying MS to As- and Cd-contaminated alkaline soil and offers the framework for conditions to be considered during As- and Cd-remediation efforts, especially when MS is the sole remediation component.

Insights on the assembly processes and drivers of soil microbial communities in different depth layers in an abandoned polymetallic mining district

Soil microbes, which play crucial roles in maintaining soil functions and restoring degraded lands, are impacted by heavy metal pollution. This study investigated the vertical distribution of bacterial communities along the soil profiles across four types of areas (heavy metal pollution level: tailings heap area > phytoremediation area > natural restoration area > original forest area) in an abandoned polymetallic mining district by 16S rRNA sequencing, and aimed to disentangle the assembly mechanisms and key drivers of the vertical variation in bacterial community structure. Bacterial diversity and composition were found to vary remarkably between the depth layers in all types of areas, with heterogeneous selection dominated the vertical distribution pattern of soil bacterial communities. Pearson correlation analysis and partial Mantel test revealed that soil nutrients mainly shaped the vertical distribution of bacterial microbiota along soil profiles in the original forest and natural restoration areas. Ni, As, and bioavailable As were the key drivers regulating the vertical variation of bacterial assemblages in the phytoremediation area, whereas Pb, pH, soil organic carbon, and available nitrogen were crucial drivers in the tailings heap area. These findings reveal the predominant assembly mechanisms and drivers governing the vertical distribution of soil bacterial microbiota and indicate the efficiency of phytoremediation and ecological restoration on ameliorating edaphic micro-ecosystems in heavy metal-contaminated areas.

Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment: efficient and low-cost removal approaches to eliminate their toxicity: a review

Heavy metal contamination of water sources has emerged as a major global environmental concern, threatening both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment is on the rise due to industrialization, climate change, and urbanization. Sources of pollution include mining waste, landfill leachates, municipal and industrial wastewater, urban runoff, and natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, weathering, and rock abrasion. Heavy metal ions are toxic, potentially carcinogenic, and can bioaccumulate in biological systems. Heavy metals can cause harm to various organs, including the neurological system, liver, lungs, kidneys, stomach, skin, and reproductive systems, even at low exposure levels. Efforts to find efficient methods to remove heavy metals from wastewater have increased in recent years. Although some approaches can effectively remove heavy metal contaminants, their high preparation and usage costs may limit their practical applications. Many review articles have been published on the toxicity and treatment methods for removing heavy metals from wastewater. This review focuses on the main sources of heavy metal pollution, their biological and chemical transformation, toxicological impacts on the environment, and harmful effects on the ecosystem. It also examines recent advances in cost-effective and efficient techniques for removing heavy metals from wastewater, such as physicochemical adsorption using biochar and natural zeolite ion exchangers, as well as decomposition of heavy metal complexes through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Finally, the advantages, practical applications, and future potential of these techniques are discussed, along with any challenges and limitations that must be considered.

Bioaccumulation and Bioremediation of Heavy Metals in Fishes-A Review

Heavy metals, the most potent contaminants of the environment, are discharged into the aquatic ecosystems through the effluents of several industries, resulting in serious aquatic pollution. This type of severe heavy metal contamination in aquaculture systems has attracted great attention throughout the world. These toxic heavy metals are transmitted into the food chain through their bioaccumulation in different tissues of aquatic species and have aroused serious public health concerns. Heavy metal toxicity negatively affects the growth, reproduction, and physiology of fish, which is threatening the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector. Recently, several techniques, such as adsorption, physio-biochemical, molecular, and phytoremediation mechanisms have been successfully applied to reduce the toxicants in the environment. Microorganisms, especially several bacterial species, play a key role in this bioremediation process. In this context, the present review summarizes the bioaccumulation of different heavy metals into fishes, their toxic effects, and possible bioremediation techniques to protect the fishes from heavy metal contamination. Additionally, this paper discusses existing strategies to bioremediate heavy metals from aquatic ecosystems and the scope of genetic and molecular approaches for the effective bioremediation of heavy metals.

A Review on Remediation of Iron Ore Mine Tailings via Organic Amendments Coupled with Phytoremediation

Mining operations degrade natural ecosystems by generating a large quantity of mine tailings. Mine tailings remain in dams/open ponds without further treatment after valuable metals such as iron ore have been extracted. Therefore, rehabilitation of tailings to mitigate the negative environmental impacts is of the utmost necessity. This review compares existing physical, chemical and amendment-assisted phytoremediation methods in the rehabilitation of mine tailings from the perspective of cost, reliability and durability. After review and discussion, it is concluded that amendment-assisted phytoremediation has received comparatively great attention; however, the selection of an appropriate phytoremediator is the critical step in the process. Moreover, the efficiency of phytoremediation is solely dependent on the amendment type and rate. Further, the application of advanced plant improvement technologies, such as genetically engineered plants produced for this purpose, would be an alternative solution. Further research is needed to determine the suitability of this method for the particular environment.

Does biochar in combination with compost effectively promote phytostabilization of heavy metals in soil under different temperature regimes?

The article presents the effect of a combined amendment, i.e., biochar+compost (BC), on the process of Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn immobilization in soil cultivated with L. perenne under freezing and thawing conditions (FTC). In particular, the speciation analysis of the examined elements in phytostabilized soils based on their response using the sequential extraction, and the variability of the soil microbiome using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing were systematically assessed. Metal stability in soils was evaluated by the reduced distribution index (Ir). Plants were grown in pots for 52 days under greenhouse conditions. After termination, phytostabilization was continued in a temperature chamber for 64 days to provide FTC. As a result, it was noted that biomass yield of L. perenne was promoted by BC (39 % higher than in the control pots) and reduced by FTC (45 % lower than in the BC-enriched soil not exposed to FTC). An efficacious level of phytostabilization, i.e., higher content of heavy metals in plant roots, was found in the BC-enriched soil, regardless of the changes in soil temperature conditions. BC improved soil pH before applying FTC more than after applying FTC. BC had the greatest impact on increasing Cu stability by redistributing it from the F1 and F2 fractions to the F3 and F4 fractions. For most metals, phytostabilization under FTC resulted in an increase in the proportion of the F1 fraction and a decrease in its stability. Only for Pb and Zn, FTC had greater impact on their stability than BC addition. In all soil samples, the core genera with about 2-3 % abundances were Sphingomonas sp. and Mycobacterium sp. FTC favored the growth of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria in soil. Microbial taxa that coped well with FTC but only in the absence of BC were Rhodococcus, Alkanindiges sp., Flavobacterium sp., Williamsia sp. Thermomonas sp.

Silicon fertilization enhances the resistance of tobacco plants to combined Cd and Pb contamination: Physiological and microbial mechanisms

Remediation of soil contaminated with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) is critical for tobacco production. Silicon (Si) fertilizer can relieve heavy metal stress and promote plant growth, however, it remains unknown whether fertilization with Si can mitigate the effects of Cd and Pb on tobacco growth and alter microbial community composition in polluted soils. Here we assessed the effect of two organic (OSiFA, OSiFB) and one mineral Si fertilizer (MSiF) on Cd and Pb accumulation in tobacco plants, together with responses in plant biomass, physiological parameters and soil bacterial communities in pot experiments. Results showed that Si fertilizer relieved Cd and Pb stress on tobacco, thereby promoting plant growth: Si fertilizer reduced available Cd and Pb in the soil by 37.3 % and 28.6 %, respectively, and decreased Cd and Pb contents in the plant tissue by 42.0-55.5 % and 17.2-25.6 %, resulting in increased plant biomass by 13.0-30.5 %. Fertilization with Si alleviated oxidative damage by decreasing malondialdehyde content and increasing peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase content. In addition, Si fertilization increased photosynthesis, chlorophyll and carotenoid content. Microbial community structure was also affected by Si fertilization. Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the dominant phylum in the Cd and Pb contaminated soils, but Si fertilization reduced the abundance of Actinobacteria. Si fertilization also altered microbial metabolic pathways associated with heavy metal resistance. Together, our results suggest that both organic and mineral Si fertilizers can promote tobacco growth by relieving plant physiological stress and favoring a heavy metal tolerant soil microbial community.

Effects of mowing on Pb accumulation and transport in Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers

Bermudagrass is a perennial herb with the potential to remediate Pb pollution in soils, and it has mechanical resistance to shearing. However, the effects of mowing on Pb absorption and accumulation in bermudagrass are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of different quantities (0, 1, 2, 4 applications) of mowing treatments under 200 mg L^-1 Pb application on Pb accumulation and transport in bermudagrass and explored the related mechanisms. Compared to the Pb treatment, all of the mowing treatments greatly decreased root Pb concentration/accumulation, significantly enhanced Pb concentrations/accumulations in stubble stems and stubble leaves, and ultimately promoted Pb enrichment and transport. Of the treatments in this study, two applications of mowing best promoted Pb enrichment, and four applications of mowing best promoted Pb transport efficiency. Furthermore, mowing mediated the microdistribution and physiological patterns of Pb in bermudagrass and affected the Pb transport by changing the subcellar distribution patterns and chemical forms of Pb in various tissues. Additionally, mowing promoted the transport of all mineral elements and showed a synergistic relationship with Pb absorption and transport. The change in mineral element metabolism patterns may be an important reason why mowing promoted Pb accumulation in bermudagrass. Our study provides the first comprehensive evidence regarding mowing facilitating the absorption, accumulation and transport of Pb in bermudagrass. Moderate mowing may be an effective strategy to assist in soil Pb remediation using bermudagrass.

Woody plants have the advantages in the phytoremediation process of manganese ore with the help of microorganisms

The serious ecological damage caused by mining activities cannot be ignored. The use of an environmentally friendly restoration method to rebuild the vegetation and soil environment in the mining area has attracted more and more attention. This paper aims to study soil quality as well as vegetation characteristics of four woody species including Pinus massoniana (P. massoniana), Broussonetia papyrifera (B. papyrifera), Koelreuteria paniculata (K. paniculata), Osmanthus fragrans (O. fragrans), and two herbaceous species including Setaria viridis (S. viridis) and Cynodon dactylon (C. dactylon). In addition, we further clarified the effects of B. papyrifera and K. paniculata on soil nutrients and microbial communities after restoration. The results showed that the vegetation restoration area had better soil quality and plant community diversity, and the woody plants restoration effect were better. Compared with slag, B. papyrifera and K. paniculata remediation could improve soil pH and mitigate heavy metal contamination in mining areas, but was not effective in enhancing Soil Organic Matter (SOM), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Potassium (TK) and Total Phosphorus (TP). In addition, the abundance and diversity of soil bacterial communities were increased. Of all the study sites, Proteobacteria had the greatest dominance. Vegetation restoration resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of Acidobacteria, while a decrease in Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria and Firmicutes. With the restoration of vegetation, the increase of pH, the change of TN, SOM, TK, TP and the mitigation of Manganese (Mn) pollution were the main reasons affecting the soil microbial community. This study has great significance for understanding the ecological changes in the mining area after artificially mediated vegetation restoration, including changes in soil environment, plant community and microbial community, and woody plants will be more encouraged for the restoration of manganese mining areas.

Site-specific ecological effect assessment at community level for polymetallic contaminated soil

Current ecological risk assessment (ERA) is based more on book-keeping than on science especially for terrestrial ecosystems due to the lack of relevance to real field. Accordingly, site-specific ecological effect assessment is critical for ERA, especially at high tiers. This study developed procedures to assess ecological effect at community level based on field data. As a case study, we assessed ecological effect of polymetallic contamination in soil in the surrounding of an abandoned mining and smelting site in Hunan, China. Firstly, Zn was identified as the dominant contaminant in soil and slope gradient (SG) and pH as environmental impact factors using distance-based redundancy analysis(db-RDA). Secondly, sensitive endpoints were screened using correlation analysis between Zn and parameters of plant community composition and functional traits. Thirdly, exposure-effect curves between Zn and screened endpoints were developed by taking SG and pH as covariates using Bayesian kernel machine regression analysis (BKMR), based on which half-effect concentrations (EC₅₀s) and 10 %-effect concentrations (EC₁₀s) of soil Zn for each endpoint were calculated. Finally, site-specific hazardous concentrations (HC₅₀s) of Zn were estimated. It was revealed site-specific EC₅₀s and EC₁₀s for soil Zn ranged 80.5-201 mg kg^-1 and 342-893 mgkg^-1, respectively, and HC₅₀s based on EC₁₀s and EC₅₀s ranged 104-110 mg kg^-1 and 595-612 mg kg^-1, respectively, which are more specific and inclusive than those obtained based on crop and vegetable seed germination and seedling growth toxicity experiments.

Metal-mining-induced sediment pollution presents a potential ecological risk and threat to human health across China: A meta-analysis

Aquatic sediment polluted by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from mining activities represents a potential health "time bomb" for humans and the local ecology, but the integrated analysis of pollution and hazards of PTEs in sediment around typical metal mines in China is limited. Presently, the associated pollution status, spatial distribution, and ecological and health hazards of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, and As were investigated through index evaluation, spatial analysis, health risk assessment models, and Monte Carlo simulation. Overall, the sediment exhibited varying degrees of PTE contamination; notably, the level of Cd was 104.85 times higher than its background value, and it became the most enriched element in the surveyed sediment, followed in descending order by Cu, As, Zn, Pb, and Cr. Nationally, over 64.5% of metal-mining-affected sediment presented a very high ecological risk, contributed mostly by Cd (43.2%-98.7%) followed by As, Pb, and Cu; the risk contributed by both Cr and Zn was found to be negligible. The adverse health risk posed to children by most sediment was 1.72 and 6.46 times higher than that posed to adults for cancerous and noncancerous risks, respectively. The potential noncarcinogenic risks were mainly caused by As, which contributed over 78.9% of the Hazard Index values, then followed by Pb (>9.3%). For both children and adults, the carcinogenic risk of PTEs decreased in the following order: As > Cd > Cr > Pb. The investigated sediment was found seriously affected by nearby metal mines, especially those in regions with long-term and large-scale nonferrous-metal-mining activities. This study could provide a reference for policymakers to develop control strategies for PTE pollution in sediment around mining areas.

Cadmium accumulation regulated by a rice heavy-metal importer is harmful for host plant and leaf bacteria

INTRODUCTION

Cadmium (Cd), one of the major toxic heavy metals, causes severe deleterious effects on all living organisms from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. Cadmium deposition affects bacterial diversity and bacterial population in soil. Cadmium accumulation in plants is mainly controlled by transporters and the resulting Cd enrichment gives rise to phytotoxicity.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to mine transporters that control Cd import or accumulation in rice and uncover the underlying mechanisms that how accumulated Cd poses risks to host plant and leaf bacteria.

METHODS

RNA-seq analysis, histochemical assays, and elemental quantification were carried out to reveal the biological roles of OsABCG43 for Cd import. Pathogen inoculation, IC₅₀ value, and bacterial virulence assays were conducted to disclose the effects of Cd on leaf bacteria.

RESULTS

OsABCG43 is characterized as a Cd importer controlling Cd accumulation in rice. OsABCG43 was induced under Cd stress and specifically expressed in the vasculature of leaves and roots. Overexpression of OsABCG43 caused Cd accumulation which inhibits photosynthesis and development and alters the antioxidant system, resulting in phytotoxicity. Moreover, overexpression of OsABCG43 resulted in retarded plant growth and enhanced rice sensitivity to Cd stress. Numerous differentially expressed genes were identified via RNA-seq analysis between the OsABCG43-overexpressing plants and wild type, which functioned in Cd or reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. In addition, OsABCG43 transcripts were induced by leaf bacteria Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc) and X. oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The enriched Cd directly impaired the formation of virulence factors for the leaf bacteria, preventing colonization or proliferation of Xoc or Xoo in rice leaves.

CONCLUSION

This work reveals that OsABCG43 is expressed specifically in the vascular and plasma membrane-localized OsABCG43 functions as a Cd importer. OsABCG43-mediated import of Cd is harmful for both rice and the corresponding leaf bacteria.

Contamination and health risks of heavy metals in the soil of a historical landfill in northern China

Landfill-induced heavy metal (HM) contamination of soils is a widespread and complex problem. The levels and potential hazards of HM contamination in landfills must be evaluated before they can be reused for any purpose. In order to reuse a historical landfill in northern China, 376 sampling sites were selected in 2019 using the checkerboard layout method, and the levels of arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and thallium (Tl) in the soil were measured. Multiple evaluation methods established the HM pollution levels, agricultural suitability, and health risks associated with the sampling sites. In most parts of the study area, the concentrations of all nine HMs exceeded the screening levels and maximum allowable concentrations for agricultural soils. Only the soils in Zones 5 and 6 can be used for agricultural activity. Moreover, the deep soils were heavily contaminated with HMs in certain areas, possibly because of leaching and infiltration in the surface soil and the rise and diffusion of polluted groundwater. The soil HMs in the study area posed a higher carcinogenic risks to both adults and children. The average carcinogenic risk associated with As was 6.12 × 10^-4, which was the major contributor to carcinogenic risk at all HM-contaminated sites. The results of this work empirically demonstrated that soil HM pollution is severe and problematic in the study area and remedial measures are urgently required.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) Cultivation Combined with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculation and Steel Slag Application Influences Trace Elements-Polluted Soil Bacterial Functioning

The cultivation of aromatic plants for the extraction of essential oils has been presented as an innovative and economically viable alternative for the remediation of areas polluted with trace elements (TE). Therefore, this study focuses on the contribution of the cultivation of coriander and the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in combination with mineral amendments (steel slag) on the bacterial function of the rhizosphere, an aspect that is currently poorly understood and studied. The introduction of soil amendments, such as steel slag or mycorrhizal inoculum, had no significant effect on coriander growth. However, steel slag changed the structure of the bacterial community in the rhizosphere without affecting microbial function. In fact, Actinobacteria were significantly less abundant under slag-amended conditions, while the relative proportion of Gemmatimonadota increased. On the other hand, the planting of coriander affects the bacterial community structure and significantly increased the bacterial functional richness of the amended soil. Overall, these results show that planting coriander most affected the structure and functioning of bacterial communities in the TE-polluted soils and reversed the effects of mineral amendments on rhizosphere bacterial communities and their activities. This study highlights the potential of coriander, especially in combination with steel slag, for phytomanagement of TE-polluted soils, by improving soil quality and health.

Response mechanisms of bacterial communities and nitrogen cycle functional genes in millet rhizosphere soil to chromium stress

Introduction

A growing amount of heavy metal contamination in soil disturbs the ecosystem's equilibrium, in which microbial populations play a key role in the nutrient cycle of soils. However, given the different sensitivity of microbial communities to different spatial and temporal scales, microbial community structure and function also have varied response mechanisms to different heavy metal contaminated habitats.

Methods

In this study, samples were taken prior to Cr stress (CK) and 6 h and 6 days after Cr stress (Cr_6h, Cr_6d) in laboratory experiments. High-throughput sequencing revealed trends in the structure and diversity of the bacterial communities, and real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to analyze trends in nitrogen cycle functional genes (AOA-amoA, AOB-amoA, narG, nirK, and nifH).

Results

The findings showed that (1) the composition structure of the soil bacterial community changed considerably in Cr-stressed soils; α-diversity showed significant phase transition characteristic from stress to stability (p < 0.05). (2) With an overall rising tendency, the abundance of the nitrogen cycle functional genes (AOA-amoA and AOB-amoA) decreased considerably before increasing, and α-diversity dramatically declined (p < 0.05). (3) The redundancy analysis (RDA) and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) tests results showed that the soil physicochemical parameters were significantly correlated with the nitrogen cycle functional genes (r: 0.4195, p < 0.01). Mantel analysis showed that available nitrogen (N), available potassium (K), and available phosphorus (P) were significantly correlated with nifH (p = 0.006, 0.008, 0.004), and pH was highly significantly correlated with nifH (p = 0.026). The PLS-ME (partial least squares path model) model further demonstrated a significant direct effect of the soil physicochemical parameters on the nitrogen cycling functional genes.

Discussion

As a result, the composition and diversity of the bacterial community and the nitrogen cycle functional genes in Cr-stressed agricultural soils changed considerably. However, the influence of the soil physicochemical parameters on the functional genes involved in the nitrogen cycle was greater than that of the bacterial community. and Cr stress affects the N cycling process in soil mainly by affecting nitrification. This research has significant practical ramifications for understanding the mechanisms of microbial community homeostasis maintenance, nitrogen cycle response mechanisms, and soil remediation in heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soils.

Crude oil associated heavy metals (HMs) contamination in agricultural land: Understanding risk factors and changes in soil biological properties

Ecological and human risks of crude oil associated heavy metals (HMs) in the contaminated agricultural lands were evaluated employing different indices. The indices that were employed includes enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (C_f),pollution load index (PLI), geo-accumulation index (I_geo), ecological risk index (ERI), contamination degree (C_d), Nemerow's pollution index (P_N), exposure factor (ExF), hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI). Besides, the adverse effects of crude oil associated HMs on the soil biological properties were also analyzed. The results of C_f and EF were found consistent with each other showing the HMs in the decreasing order of contamination as Mn > Zn > Cr > Ni > Cu. The I_geo and ERI fall in the grade (I_geo>5) and (ERI ≥40) respectively. The results of PLI, C_d, P_N and ExF values clearly indicate a high environmental risk of crude oil-associated HMs. The results of the human health risks assessment revealed the maximum level of HMs enters the body via ingestion. There were significant(p < 0.05) decreases (5.7-15.5 folds) in the activities of cellulase (0.194 ± 0.02-0.998 ± 0.1), phosphatase (0.173 ± 0.3-0.612 ± 1.5), catalase (0.328 ± 0.3-2.036 ± 1.5), urease (0.44 ± 0.3-1.80 ± 1.2), dehydrogenase (0.321 ± 0.2-0.776 ± 0.7),polyphenol oxidase (0.21 ± 0.5-0.89 ± 2.5)and peroxidase (0.13 ± 0.4-0.53 ± 1.03)in crude oil-contaminated soil. The Pearson's correlation confirmed the significant negative impact of HMs on the soil's biological properties.

Mercury waste from artisanal and small-scale gold mining facilities: a risk to farm ecosystems-a case study of Obuasi, Ghana

Frequent discharge of mercury waste from artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) facilities into nearby farms may contaminate foodstuffs and the entire farms. High contamination levels may result in ecological risks to the soil, plants, animals, humans, and the entire farm ecosystem. This original research is the first study within the catchment areas that describes the effects of mercury waste on the entire farm ecosystem. In this study, the contamination levels and the associated ecological risks of farmland soils, plantains, and cassavas from farms sited near ASGM facilities in four communities around Obuasi, Ghana, were evaluated using the Hakanson (1980) model. Results showed that all samples except for the edible parts of plantains from Tweapease, Nyamebekyere, and Ahansonyewodea and plantain peels from Nyamebekyere and Ahansonyewodea were contaminated and may pose moderate to very high ecological risks. All farms were also contaminated and may pose considerable to very high ecological risks. The farms at Odumase were the highest contaminated with degree of contamination (C_deg) above 20, while those at Ahansonyewodea were the least contaminated with C_deg = 8.1. This meant that farms at Odumase may pose the highest potential ecological risk (P_er) to plants, animals, humans, and the entire farm ecosystem since P_er > 600, while the farms at Ahansonyewodea may pose the least ecological risks with P_er = 324. There is, therefore, the need for strict control of ASGM activities in these study areas to preserve the integrity of the ecosystem.

Unravelling the ultramafic rock-driven serpentine soil formation leading to the geo-accumulation of heavy metals: An impact on the resident microbiome, biogeochemical cycling and acclimatized eco-physiological profiles

In the present study, we have underpinned the serpentine rock, serpentinized ultramafic soil and rhizosphere's microbial communities, signifying their heavy metals-exposed taxa signatures and functional repertoires in comparison to non-serpentine soils. The results revealed that the serpentine rock embedded soil highlighted the geo-accumulation of higher amount of Cr and Ni impacting soil microbial diversity negatively by metal stress-driven selection. Biolog Ecoplate CLPP defined a restricted spectrum of C-utilization in the higher heavy metal-containing serpentine samples compared to non-serpentine. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) score identified a higher abundance of Desulfobacterota, Opitutales, and Bacteroidales in low Cr and Ni-stressed non-serpentine-exposed samples. Whereas the abundance of Propionibacteriales and Actinobacteriota were significantly enriched in the serpentine niche. Further, the C, N, S, Fe, and methane biogeochemical cycles linked functional members were identified, and showing higher functional diversity in low Cr and Ni concentration-containing rhizosphere JS-soils. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) value confirmed the abundance of functional members linked to specific biogeochemical cycle, positively correlated with relevant pathway enrichment. Ultimately, this study highlighted the heavy metal stress within a serpentine setting that could limit the resident microbial community's metabolic diversity and further select the bacteria that could thrive in the serpentine-associated heavy metal-stressed soils. These acclimatized microbes could pave the way for the future applications in the soil conservation and management.

Bacterial and fungal diversities examined through high-throughput sequencing in response to lead contamination of tea garden soil

Several studies have indicated that the heavy-metal content in tea is increasing gradually. Researchers examining the soil of more than 100 tea gardens in China have observed that lead content was higher in some soils. The effect of lead contamination on soil microorganisms in tea gardens was studied to determine the effect of lead on the essential functions of microorganisms in a tea garden soil ecosystem. Previous studies on pot experiments adopted the method of adding a single instance of pollution, which failed to comprehensively simulate the characteristics of the slow accumulation of heavy metals in soil. This study designed with two pollution modes (multistage and single instance) determined the content of soil lead in different forms according to the European Community Bureau of Reference extraction procedure. The community structure, species diversity and functional abundance of soil bacteria and fungi were examined by high-throughput sequencing. We observed that the content of four forms of lead was higher in the multistage contamination mode than in the single instance contamination mode. The effects of lead contamination on bacteria differed significantly (p < 0.05), and the abundance and diversity of bacteria were higher in the multistage contamination mode than in the single instance contamination mode. The community structure of fungi was more affected by lead than was that of bacteria. The content of each lead form was the environmental factor most strongly affecting soil bacteria and fungi. The predicted main function of the bacterial community was amino acid transport and metabolism, and the trophic mode of the fungal community was mainly pathotroph-saprotroph. This study revealed changes in soil microorganisms caused by different forms of lead and contamination methods in tea garden soil and provide a theoretical basis for examining the effects of lead contamination on soil microorganisms.

Spatial distribution of multi-elements in moss revealing heavy metal precipitation in London Island, Svalbard, Arctic

The Arctic is a sink for major pollutants in the Northern Hemisphere, and is an ideal place to investigate the migration of concerned metals on the local environment. In this study, 13 elements including Li, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were determined in mosses (Dicranum angustum) from London Island in Ny-Ålesund. The results showed that the concentrations of different elements varied greatly at different altitudes, while their distributions in low (0-200 m) and high (200-300 m) altitudes based on cluster analysis were significantly different. Among them, Li, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and As showed significant positive correlations with elevation. This result may be due to the influence of key environmental factors such as elements transported by the airborne dust carried by winds, and surface runoff from snow meltwater. Multiple receptor models (PCA, PMF, and UNMIX) were employed to discuss the sources of metals in mosses from London Island. Elements that showed positive correlation with altitude were attributed to natural sources, and Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb, which lacked apparent correlation with elevation, were interpreted as from anthropogenic sources by the models. Among them, Zn, Cd, and Hg were from long-range deposition, while Pb was from mixed industrial sources.

Antimicrobial Agents Based on Metal Complexes: Present Situation and Future Prospects

The rise in antimicrobial resistance is a cause of serious concern since the ages. Therefore, a dire need to explore new antimicrobial entities that can combat against the increasing threat of antibiotic resistance is realized. Studies have shown that the activity of the strongest antibiotics has reduced drastically against many microbes such as microfungi and bacteria (Gram-positive and Gram-negative). A ray of hope, however, was witnessed in early 1940s with the development of new drug discovery and use of metal complexes as antibiotics. Many new metal-based drugs were developed from the metal complexes which are potentially active against a number of ailments such as cancer, malaria, and neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, this review is an attempt to describe the present scenario and future development of metal complexes as antibiotics against wide array of microbes.

Effects of cadmium (Cd) on fungal richness, diversity, and community structure of Haplic Cambisols and inference of resistant fungal genera

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic and widely distributed pollutants in mining sites of Northeast China, and how Cd contamination may affect the fungal characteristics of the zonal Haplic Cambisols is still unknown. The study aims to investigate the richness and diversity of fungal community in Haplic Cambisols in response to Cd treatments and to infer Cd-resistant fungal genera. Haplic Cambisol was treated with different concentrations of CdCl₂·2.5H₂O solution (0 mg kg^-1, 1 mg kg^-1, 5 mg kg^-1, 25 mg kg^-1, and 50 mg kg^-1, expressed as CK, T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively), and fungal community was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing technology at 30 days, 60 days, or 80 days after Cd treatment (expressed as d30, d60, and d80, respectively). The results showed that Cd treatment usually increased the richness and diversity indices, the variation of diversity index under different Cd concentrations was not obvious, and different Cd incubation times had an inhibitory effect on fungal richness, but the diversity first increased and then decreased. Besides, Ascomycota and Mortierellomycota having the highest abundance in Haplic Cambisols showed the most pronounced changes under Cd treatment. Accordingly, Cd-resistant fungi were also found, such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Trichoderma, especially Aspergillus, which had relatively high abundance. The results obtained in this study had potentially significant findings for soil biodiversity and Cd bioremediation.

New approach strategy for heavy metals immobilization and microbiome structure long-term industrially contaminated soils

The progress of engineering technologies highly influences the development of methods that lead to the condition improvement of areas contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). The aided phytostabilization fits into this trend, and was used to evaluate HM-immobilization effectiveness in phytostabilized soils under variable temperatures by applying 16 freezing-thawing cycles (FTC). Diatomite amendment and Lolium perenne L., also were applied. Cd/Ni/Cu/Pb/Zn each total content in phytostabilized soils were determined, along with the verification for each metal of its distribution in four extracted fractions (F1 ÷ F4) from soils. Based on changes in HM distribution, each metal's stability was estimated. Moreover, HM accumulation in plant roots and stems and soil microbial composition were investigated. Independently of the experimental variant (no-FTC-exposure or FTC-exposure), the above-ground biomass yields in the diatomite-amended series were higher as compared to the corresponding control series. The evident changes in Pb/Zn-bioavailability were observed. The metal stability increase was mainly attributed to metal concentration decreasing in the F1 fraction and increasing in the F4 fraction, respectively. Diatomite increased Cd/Zn-stability in not-FTC-exposed-phytostabilized soils. FTC-exposure favorably influenced Pb/Zn stability. Diatomite increased soil pH values and Cd/Ni/Cu/Zn-bioaccumulation (except Pb) in roots than in stems (in both experimental variants). FTC-exposure influenced soil microbial composition, increasing bacteria abundance belonging to Actinobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Sphingobacteria. At the genus level, FTC exposure significantly increased the abundances of Limnobacter sp., Tetrasphaera sp., Flavobacterium sp., and Dyella sp. Independently of the experimental variant, Sphingomonas sp. and Mycobacterium sp., which have a tolerance to HM contamination, were core bacterial groups, comprising about 6 ÷ 7% of all soil bacteria.

The Analysis of the Mycobiota in Plastic Polluted Soil Reveals a Reduction in Metabolic Ability

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental issue that results in its accumulation and persistence in soil for many decades, with possible effects on soil quality and ecosystem services. Microorganisms, and especially fungi, are a keystone of soil biodiversity and soil metabolic capacity. The aim of this research was to study soil fungal biodiversity and soil microbial metabolic profiles in three different sites in northern Italy, where macro- and microplastic concentration in soil was measured. The metabolic analyses of soil microorganisms were performed by Biolog EcoPlates, while the ITS1 fragment of the 18S ribosomal cDNA was used as a target for the metabarcoding of fungal communities. The results showed an intense and significant decrease in soil microbial metabolic ability in the site with the highest concentration of microplastics. Moreover, the soil fungal community composition was significantly different in the most pristine site when compared with the other two sites. The metabarcoding of soil samples revealed a general dominance of Mortierellomycota followed by Ascomycota in all sampled soils. Moreover, a dominance of fungi involved in the degradation of plant residues was observed in all three sites. In conclusion, this study lays the foundation for further research into the effect of plastics on soil microbial communities and their activities.

The soil pH and heavy metals revealed their impact on soil microbial community

Soil microbial community is the main indicator having a crucial role in the remediation of polluted soils. These microbes can alter soil pH, organic matter in soils (SOM), soil physic-chemical properties, and potential soil respiration rate via their enzymatic activities. Similarly, heavy metals also have a crucial role in soil enzymatic activities. For this purpose, a number of methods are studied to evaluate the impact of soil pH (a key factor in the formation of biogeographic microbial patterns in bacteria) on bacterial diversity. The effects of pH on microbial activity are glamorous but still unclear. Whereas, some studies also indicate that soil pH alone is not the single key player in the diversity of soil bacteria. Ecological stability is achieved in a pollution-free environment and pH value. The pH factor has a significant impact on the dynamics of microbes' communities. Here, we try to discuss factors that directly or indirectly affect soil pH and the impact of pH on microbial activity. It is also discussed the environmental factors that contribute to establishing a specific bacterial community structure that must be determined. From this, it can be concluded that the environmental impact on soil pH, reducing soil pH and interaction with this factor, and reducing the effect of soil pH on soil microbial community.

Bacillus megaterium HgT21: a Promising Metal Multiresistant Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria for Soil Biorestoration

The environmental deterioration produced by heavy metals derived from anthropogenic activities has gradually increased. The worldwide dissemination of toxic metals in crop soils represents a threat for sustainability and biosafety in agriculture and requires strategies for the recovery of metal-polluted crop soils. The biorestoration of metal-polluted soils using technologies that combine plants and microorganisms has gained attention in recent decades due to the beneficial and synergistic effects produced by its biotic interactions. In this context, native and heavy metal-resistant plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) play a crucial role in the development of strategies for sustainable biorestoration of metal-contaminated soils. In this study, we present a genomic analysis and characterization of the rhizospheric bacterium Bacillus megaterium HgT21 isolated from metal-polluted soil from Zacatecas, Mexico. The results reveal that this autochthonous bacterium contains an important set of genes related to a variety of operons associated with mercury, arsenic, copper, cobalt, cadmium, zinc and aluminum resistance. Additionally, halotolerance-, beta-lactam resistance-, phosphate solubilization-, and plant growth-promotion-related genes were identified. The analysis of resistance to metal ions revealed resistance to mercury (HgII+), arsenate [AsO4]³-, cobalt (Co2+), zinc (Zn2+), and copper (Cu2+). Moreover, the ability of the HgT21 strain to produce indole acetic acid (a phytohormone) and promote the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings in vitro was also demonstrated. The genotype and phenotype of Bacillus megaterium HgT21 reveal its potential to be used as a model of both plant growth-promoting and metal multiresistant bacteria. IMPORTANCE Metal-polluted environments are natural sources of a wide variety of PGPB adapted to cope with toxic metal concentrations. In this work, the bacterial strain Bacillus megaterium HgT21 was isolated from metal-contaminated soil and is proposed as a model for the study of metal multiresistance in spore-forming Gram-positive bacteria due to the presence of a variety of metal resistance-associated genes similar to those encountered in the metal multiresistant Gram-negative Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34. The ability of B. megaterium HgT21 to promote the growth of plants also makes it suitable for the study of plant-bacteria interactions in metal-polluted environments, which is key for the development of techniques for the biorestoration of metal-contaminated soils used for agriculture.

Quantitative Assessment and Spatial Analysis of Metals and Metalloids in Soil Using the Geo-Accumulation Index in the Capital Town of Romblon Province, Philippines

The municipality of Romblon in the Philippines is an island known for its marble industry. The subsurface of the Philippines is known for its limestone. The production of marble into slab, tiles, and novelty items requires heavy equipment to cut rocks and boulders. The finishing of marble requires polishing to smoothen the surface. During the manufacturing process, massive amounts of particulates and slurry are produced, and with a lack of technology and human expertise, the environment can be adversely affected. Hence, this study assessed and monitored the environmental conditions in the municipality of Romblon, particularly the soils and sediments, which were affected due to uncontrolled discharges and particulates deposition. A total of fifty-six soil and twenty-three sediment samples were collected and used to estimate the metal and metalloid (MM) concentrations in the whole area using a neural network-particle swarm optimization inverse distance weighting model (NN-PSO). There were nine MMs; e.g., As, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Ba, Mn, Zn and Fe, with significant concentrations detected in the area in both soils and sediments. The geo-accumulation index was computed to assess the level of contamination in the area, and only the soil exhibited contamination with zinc, while others were still on a safe level. Nemerow's pollution index (NPI) was calculated for the samples collected, and soil was evaluated and seen to have a light pollution level, while sediment was considered as "clean". Furthermore, the single ecological risk (Er) index for both soil and sediment samples was considered to be a low pollution risk because all values of Er were less than 40.

Antimicrobial Resistance and Its Drivers-A Review

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical issue in health care in terms of mortality, quality of services, and financial damage. In the battle against AMR, it is crucial to recognize the impacts of all four domains, namely, mankind, livestock, agriculture, and the ecosystem. Many sociocultural and financial practices that are widespread in the world have made resistance management extremely complicated. Several pathways, including hospital effluent, agricultural waste, and wastewater treatment facilities, have been identified as potential routes for the spread of resistant bacteria and their resistance genes in soil and surrounding ecosystems. The overuse of uncontrolled antibiotics and improper treatment and recycled wastewater are among the contributors to AMR. Health-care organizations have begun to address AMR, although they are currently in the early stages. In this review, we provide a brief overview of AMR development processes, the worldwide burden and drivers of AMR, current knowledge gaps, monitoring methodologies, and global mitigation measures in the development and spread of AMR in the environment.

Soil microbial community assembly model in response to heavy metal pollution

Heavy metal pollution affected the stability and function of soil ecosystem. The impact of heavy metals on soil microbial community and the interaction of microbial community has been widely studied, but little was known about the response of community assembly to the heavy metal pollution. In this study, we collected 30 soil samples from non (CON), moderately (CL) and severely (CH) contaminated fields. The prokaryotic community was studied using high-throughput Illumina sequencing of 16s rRNA gene amplicons, and community assembly were quantified using phylogenetic-bin-based null approach (iCAMP). Results showed that diversity and composition of both bacterial and archaeal community changed significantly in response to heavy metal pollution. The microbial community assembly tended to be more deterministic with the increase of heavy metal concentration. Among the assembly processes, the relative importance of homogeneous selection (deterministic process) increased significantly (increased by 16.2%), and the relative importance of drift and dispersal limitation (stochastic process) decreased significantly (decreased by 11.4% and 5.4%, respectively). The determinacy of bacterial and archaeal community assembly also increased with heavy metal stress, but the assembly models were different. The deterministic proportion of microorganisms tolerant to heavy metals, such as Thiobacillus, Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota (clustered in bin 32, bin59 and bin60, respectively) increased, while the stochastic proportion of microorganisms sensitive to heavy metals, such as Koribacteraceae (clustered in bin23) increased. Therefore, the heavy metal stress made the prokaryotic community be deterministic, however, the effects on the assembly process of different microbial groups differed obviously.

A Matter of Metals: Copper but Not Cadmium Affects the Microbial Alpha-Diversity of Soils and Sediments - a Meta-analysis

Heavy metal (HM) accumulation in soil affects plants and soil fauna, yet the effect on microbial alpha-diversity remains unclear, mainly due to the absence of dedicated research synthesis (e.g. meta-analysis). Here, we report the first meta-analysis of the response of soil microbial alpha-diversity to the experimental addition of cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu). We considered studies conducted between 2013 and 2022 using DNA metabarcoding of bacterial and fungal communities to overcome limitations of other cultivation- and electrophoresis-based techniques. Fungi were discarded due to the limited study number (i.e. 6 studies). Bacterial studies resulted in 66 independent experiments reported in 32 primary papers from four continents. We found a negative dose-dependent response for Cu but not for Cd for bacterial alpha-diversity in the environments, only for Cu additions exceeding 29.6 mg kg^-1 (first loss of - 0.06% at 30 mg kg^-1). The maximal loss of bacterial alpha-diversity registered was 13.89% at 3837 mg kg^-1. Our results first highlight that bacterial communities behave differently to soil pollution depending on the metal. Secondly, our study suggests that even extreme doses of Cu do not cause a dramatic loss in alpha-diversity, highlighting how the behaviour of bacterial communities diverges from soil macro-organisms.

Investigating the role of bentonite clay with different soil amendments to minimize the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Solanum melongena L. under the irrigation of tannery wastewater

Wastewater from tanneries is a major source of heavy metals in soil and plants when used for crop irrigation. The unavoidable toxicological effects of this contamination, however, can be minimized through two independent steps discussed in the present study. In the first step, a batch sorption experiment was conducted in which Cr was adsorbed through bentonite clay. For this purpose, DTPA extraction method was used to analyze Cr concentration in the soil after regular time intervals (0.5, 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10.5, 11.5, and 20.3 h) which reduced Cr concentration from 38.542 mgL^-1 for 30 min to 5.6597 mgL^-1 for 20.3 h, respectively, by applying 1% bentonite. An increase in the contact time efficiently allowed soil adsorbent to adsorb maximum Cr from soil samples. In the second step, a pot experiment was conducted with 10 different treatments to improve the physiological and biochemical parameters of the Solanum melongena L. irrigated under tanneries' wastewater stress. There were four replicates, and the crop was harvested after 30 days of germination. It was seen that the application of wastewater significantly (P < 0.01) reduced growth of Solanum melongena L. by reducing root (77%) and shoot (63%) fresh weight when compared with CFOP (Ce-doped Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles); chlorophyll a and b (fourfolds) were improved under CFOP application relative to control (CN). However, the deleterious effects of Cr (86%) and Pb (90%) were significantly decreased in shoot through CFOP application relative to CN. Moreover, oxidative damage induced by the tannery's wastewater stress (P < 0.01) was tolerated by applying different soil amendments. However, results were well pronounced with the application of CFOP which competitively decreased the concentrations of MDA (95%), H₂O₂ (89%), and CMP (85%) by efficiently triggering the activities of antioxidant defense mechanisms such as APX (threefold), CAT (twofold), and phenolics (75%) in stem relative to CN. Consequently, all the applied amendments (BN, BT, FOP, and CFOP) have shown the ability to efficiently tolerate the tannery's wastewater stress; results were more pronounced with the addition of CFOP and FOP+BT by improving physiological and biochemical parameters of Solanum melongena L. in an eco-friendly way.

Risk assessment and driving factors of trace metal(loid)s in soils of China

Recently, with the rapid development of China's economy, the pollution of trace metal(loid)s (TMs) in soils has become increasingly severe and attracted widespread attention. Based on 1,402 published papers from 2000 to 2021, this study aimed to analyze the pollution intensity, ecological risk and driving factors for eight TMs (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in Chinese soils. Results showed that the average concentrations of eight TMs in Chinese soils all exceeded background values, and the pollution of Cd and Hg was the most serious. Based on Principal component analysis of pollution intensity and ecological risk, the priority control TMs were identified for the heavily polluted provinces. The results of Geo-detector model suggested that Urban development factors contributed most to the TM accumulation in Chinese soils. Further, spatial analysis using bivariate Moran's I indicated that industrial activities contributed most to soil TM accumulation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, while soil TM pollution in the southwest and northwest provinces was mainly caused by mining and metal smelting. This study investigated the relationship between soil TM pollution and anthropogenic activities, thus providing a scientific basis for controlling soil TM pollution at a large-scale level.

The Effect of Heavy Metals on Microbial Communities in Industrial Soil in the Area of Piekary Śląskie and Bukowno (Poland)

The aim of this study was to determine the activity and structure of microbial communities in soils contaminated with heavy metals (HMs). To achieve this goal, soil samples were taken from two contaminated sites (i.e., Piekary Śląskie and Bukowno) in Poland. A wide range of methods were applied, including: total and metal-tolerant culturable bacteria enumeration; microbial community structure analysis using the phospholipid fatty acid method (PLFA); denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE); and metabolic activity using BIOLOG and EcoPlateTM. Our studies showed that HMs negatively affected microbial community structure and activity in polluted soils. Apart from the contamination with HMs, other soil parameters like soil pH and water also impacted microbial community structure and growth. Metal-tolerant bacterial strains were isolated, identified and tested for presence of genes encoding HM tolerance using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology. Contamination with HMs in the tested areas was found to lead to development of metallotolerant bacteria with multiple tolerances toward Zn, Ni, Cd and Cu. Different genes (e.g., czcA, cadA and nccA) encoding HM efflux pumps were detected within isolated bacteria. Culturable bacteria isolated belonged to Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes genera. Among non-culturable bacteria in soil samples, a significant fraction of the total bacteria and phyla, such as Gemmatimonadetes and Acidobacteria, were found to be present in all studied soils. In addition, bacteria of the Chloroflexi genus was present in soil samples from Piekary Śląskie, while bacteria of the Firmicutes genus were found in soil samples from Bukowno.

Mercury drives microbial community assembly and ecosystem multifunctionality across a Hg contamination gradient in rice paddies

Soil microbial communities are critical for maintaining terrestrial ecosystems and fundamental ecological processes. Mercury (Hg) is a heavy metal that is toxic to microorganisms, but its effects on microbial community assembly and ecosystem multifunctionality in rice paddy ecosystems remain largely unknown. In the current study, we analyzed the microbial community structure and ecosystem multifunctionality of paddy soils across a Hg contamination gradient. The results demonstrated that Hg contamination significantly altered the microbial community structure. The microbial communities were predominantly driven by deterministic selection rather than stochastic processes. The random forest model and variation partition analysis demonstrated that the Hg level was the most important predictor of microbial profiles. Ecosystem multifunctionality decreased across the Hg concentration gradient, and multifunctionality was significantly correlated with soil biodiversity, suggesting that Hg-induced reductions in soil biodiversity led to reduced ecosystem services. A structural equation model showed that Hg contamination directly and indirectly affected ecosystem multifunctionality. The present work broadens our knowledge of the assembly of the microbiome in rice paddies across a Hg contamination gradient and highlights the significance of soil biodiversity in regulating ecosystem functions, especially in Hg-polluted rice paddies.

Nitrogen and sulfur fertilizers promote the absorption of lead and cadmium with Salix integra Thunb. by increasing the bioavailability of heavy metals and regulating rhizosphere microbes

Fertilization is an effective agronomic strategy to improve the efficiency of phytoextraction by Salix integra Thunb. However, the specific effects of the simultaneous application of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) fertilizers in the rhizosphere remain unclear. We investigated the bioavailability of lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) along with the microbial metabolic functions and community structure in the rhizosphere soil of S. integra after the application of N (0, 100, and 200 kg·ha⁻¹·year⁻¹) and S (0, 100, and 200 kg·ha⁻¹·year⁻¹) fertilizers for 180 days. The simultaneous application of N and S fertilizers significantly enhanced the absorption of Pb and Cd by S. integra, whereas this effect was not observed for the single application of N or S fertilizer. The contents of acid-soluble Pb and Cd in the rhizosphere soil significantly increased after either single or combined fertilize applications. The microbial metabolic activity was enhanced by the N and S fertilizers, whereas the microbial diversity markedly decreased. The metabolic patterns were mainly affected by the concentration of N fertilizer. The dominant fungi and bacteria were similar under each treatment, although the relative abundances of the dominant and special species differed. Compared to the N200S100 and N200S200 treatments, the N100S100 and N100S200 treatments resulted in fewer pathogenic fungi and more rhizosphere growth-promoting bacteria, which promoted phytoremediation by S. integra. Redundancy analysis indicated that the pH and nitrate content were the key factors affecting the structure of the microbial community. Collectively, the results suggest interactive effects between N and S fertilizers on the rhizosphere soil, providing a potential strategy for plant-microbial remediation by S. integra.

Pollution assessment, source identification, and health risks of heavy metals: a case study in a typical wheat-maize rotation area of eastern China

Winter-wheat-summer-maize rotations are important cropping patterns in China, and the quality of the food produced from these systems can affect human health. However, the effects of heavy metal pollution on both crops remain unclear. We analyzed soil-wheat and soil-maize samples from eastern China for their Cd, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Pb contents. The concentrations of these metals in the soils analyzed were found to be lower than those recommended by the national guidelines, but the Cd, Cr, Cu, and Ni concentrations were higher than the natural soil background values in China. Quality indices showed that subpollution was predominant in wheat/maize (95.00%/81.25%) samples. Positive matrix factorization model data revealed that the contributions from natural sources, agricultural activities, and traffic to the heavy metal pollution levels were 30.40-43.07%, 34.67-26.63%, and 34.92-30.27%, respectively, in the wheat-maize rotations. Although the health hazard quotient values for wheat were higher than those for maize, there were no health risks for children or adults.
