Abstract
For many fruit crops, the colour of the fruit outwardly defines its eating quality. Fruit pigments provide reproductive advantage for the plant as well as providing protection against unfavourable environmental conditions and pathogens. For consumers these colours are considered attractive and provide many of the dietary benefits derived from fruits. In the majority of species, the main pigments are either carotenoids and/or anthocyanins. They are produced in the fruit as part of the ripening process, orchestrated by phytohormones and an ensuing transcriptional cascade, culminating in pigment biosynthesis. Whilst this is a controlled developmental process, the production of pigments is also attuned to environmental conditions such as light quantity and quality, availability of water and ambient temperature. If these factors intensify to stress levels, fruit tissues respond by increasing (or ceasing) pigment production. In many cases, if the stress is not severe, this can have a positive outcome for fruit quality. Here, we focus on the principal environmental factors (light, temperature and water) that can influence fruit colour.

Abstract
The apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) is a fruit that belongs to the Rosaceae family; it has a unique flavor and is of important economic and nutritional value. The composition and content of soluble sugars and organic acids in fruit are key factors in determining the flavor quality. However, the molecular mechanism of sugar and acid accumulation in apricots remains unclear. We measured sucrose, fructose, glucose, sorbitol, starch, malate, citric acid, titratable acid, and pH, and investigated the transcriptome profiles of three apricots (the high-sugar cultivar 'Shushanggan', common-sugar cultivar 'Sungold', and low-sugar cultivar 'F43') at three distinct developmental phases. The findings indicated that 'Shushanggan' accumulates a greater amount of sucrose, glucose, fructose, and sorbitol, and less citric acid and titratable acid, resulting in a better flavor; 'Sungold' mainly accumulates more sucrose and less citric acid and starch for the second flavor; and 'F43' mainly accumulates more titratable acid, citric acid, and starch for a lesser degree of sweetness. We investigated the DEGs associated with the starch and sucrose metabolism pathways, citrate cycle pathway, glycolysis pathway, and a handful of sugar transporter proteins, which were considered to be important regulators of sugar and acid accumulation. Additionally, an analysis of the co-expression network of weighted genes unveiled a robust correlation between the brown module and sucrose, glucose, and fructose, with VIP being identified as a hub gene that interacted with four sugar transporter proteins (SLC35B3, SLC32A, SLC2A8, and SLC2A13), as well as three structural genes for sugar and acid metabolism (MUR3, E3.2.1.67, and CSLD). Furthermore, we found some lncRNAs and miRNAs that regulate these genes. Our findings provide clues to the functional genes related to sugar metabolism, and lay the foundation for the selection and cultivation of high-sugar apricots in the future.

Abstract
Orchard grass cultivation management is an effective measure to safeguard the sustainable development of the fruit industry in China. However, details of the influence of natural sod culture management on carbon (C)-nitrogen (N) nutrition of trees and fruit quality in Hanfu apple orchards are lacking. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted, which consisted of two treatments: clean tillage (CT) and natural grass cultivation (NG). Results revealed that NG treatment contributed to the increases in soil organic matter (SOM), total N, and soil NH4+-N at depths of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm, while the soil NO3--N concentration under NG treatment was significantly decreased at the same depth, within the range of 0-200 cm of the soil profile, compared with CT. NG treatment also significantly promoted leaf photosynthesis and enhanced leaf N and fruit sugar metabolism. The results of isotope labeling showed that NG treatment obviously elevated the 13C accumulation and distribution rate in fruits, as well as the 15N accumulation in the whole tree, whereas the 15N accumulation in fruits decreased. Furthermore, NG treatment significantly increased the fruit anthocyanin content. These results provide theoretical references for the feasibility of natural sod culture management to improve fruit quality in Hanfu apple orchards.

Abstract
Due to unprecedented climate change, rapid industrialization and increasing use of agrochemicals, abiotic stress, such as drought, low temperature, high salinity and heavy metal pollution, has become an increasingly serious problem in global agriculture. Anthocyanins, an important plant pigment, are synthesized through the phenylpropanoid pathway and have a variety of physiological and ecological functions, providing multifunctional and effective protection for plants under stress. Foliar anthocyanin accumulation often occurs under abiotic stress including high light, cold, drought, salinity, nutrient deficiency and heavy metal stress, causing leaf reddening or purpling in many plant species. Anthocyanins are used as sunscreens and antioxidants to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), as metal(loid) chelators to mitigate heavy metal stress, and as crucial molecules with a role in delaying leaf senescence. In addition to environmental factors, anthocyanin synthesis is affected by various endogenous factors. Plant hormones such as abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene and gibberellin have been shown to be involved in regulating anthocyanin synthesis either positively or negatively. Particularly when plants are under abiotic stress, several plant hormones can induce foliar anthocyanin synthesis to enhance plant stress resistance. In this review, we revisit the role of plant hormones in anthocyanin biosynthesis and the mechanism of plant hormone-mediated anthocyanin accumulation and abiotic stress tolerance. We conclude that enhancing anthocyanin content with plant hormones could be a prospective management strategy for improving plant stress resistance, but extensive further research is essentially needed to provide future guidance for practical crop production.

Abstract
Abscisic acid (ABA) is an isoprenoid-derived plant signaling molecule involved in a wide variety of plant processes, including facets of growth and development as well as responses to abiotic and biotic stress. ABA had previously been reported in a wide variety of animals, including insects and humans. We used high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-(ESI)-MS/MS) to examine concentrations of ABA in 17 species of phytophagous insects, including gall- and non-gall-inducing species from all insect orders with species known to induce plant galls: Thysanoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera. We found ABA in insect species in all six orders, in both gall-inducing and non-gall-inducing species, with no tendency for gall-inducing insects to have higher concentrations. The concentrations of ABA in insects often markedly exceeded those typically found in plants, suggesting it is highly improbable that insects obtain all their ABA from their host plant via consumption and sequestration. As a follow-up, we used immunohistochemistry to determine that ABA localizes to the salivary glands in the larvae of the gall-inducing Eurosta solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae). The high concentrations of ABA, combined with its localization to salivary glands, suggest that insects are synthesizing and secreting ABA to manipulate their host plants. The pervasiveness of ABA among both gall- and non-gall-inducing insects and our current knowledge of the role of ABA in plant processes suggest that insects are using ABA to manipulate source-sink mechanisms of nutrient allocation or to suppress host-plant defenses. ABA joins the triumvirate of phytohormones, along with cytokinins (CKs) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), that are abundant, widespread, and localized to glandular organs in insects and used to manipulate host plants.

Abstract
Exocarp color de-synchronization with softening of 'Hass' avocado is a relevant recurrent problem for the avocado supply chain. This study aimed to unravel the mechanisms driving this de-synchronization integrating omics datasets from avocado exocarp of different storage conditions and color phenotypes. In addition, we propose potential biomarkers to predict color synchronized/de-synchronized fruit. Integration of transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics and network analysis revealed eight transcription factors associated with differentially regulated genes between regular air (RA) and controlled atmosphere (CA) and twelve transcription factors related to avocado fruit color de-synchronization control in ready-to-eat stage. CA was positively correlated to auxins, ethylene, cytokinins and brassinosteroids-related genes, while RA was characterized by enrichment of cell wall remodeling and abscisic acid content associated genes. At ready-to-eat higher contents of flavonoids, abscisic acid and brassinosteroids were associated with color-softening synchronized avocados. In contrast, de-synchronized fruit revealed increases of jasmonic acid, salicylic acid and auxin levels.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Both nitrogen (N) and magnesium (Mg) play important roles in biochemical and physiological processes in plants. However, the application of excessive N and insufficient Mg may be the factor leading to low nitrogen utilization rate (NUE) and fruit quality degradation in apple production. METHODS In this study, we analyzed the effects of different application rates of Mg (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 kg/ha) on the photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), the accumulation and distribution of carbon (C), N metabolism, anthocyanin biosynthesis and fruit quality of the 'Red Fuji' apple in 2018 and 2019. RESULTS The results showed that the application of Mg significantly increased the 15NUE and increased the allocation rate of 15N in the leaves whereas the 15N allocation rate in the perennial organs and fruits was decreased. With the increase in Mg supply, the activities of N metabolism enzymes (NiR, GS, and GOGAT) were significantly promoted and the content of intermediate products in N metabolism ( NO 2 - , NH 4 + , and free amino acid) was significantly decreased. Furthermore, an appropriate rate of Mg significantly promoted the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), enhanced the enzyme activities of C metabolism (SS, SPS, S6PDH), and increased the contents of sorbitol and sucrose in leaves. In addition, Mg upregulated the gene expression of sugar transporters (MdSOT1, MdSOT3, MdSUT1, and MdSUT4) in fruit stalk and fruit fresh; 13C isotope tracer technology also showed that Mg significantly increased the 13C allocation in the fruits. Mg also significantly increased the expression of anthocyanin biosynthesis genes (MdCHS and MdF3H) and transcription factors (MdMYB1 and MdbZIP44) and the content of anthocyanin in apple peel. CONCLUSION The comprehensive analysis showed that the appropriate application of Mg (150 kg/ha) promoted PNUE, C-N metabolism, and anthocyanin biosynthesis in apple trees.

Abstract
Introduction High salinity significantly hampers global agricultural productivity. Plants typically undergo lower nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUE) under salt stress. As an active byproduct from brassinolide biosynthesis, 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) is involved in regulating the stress-treated plant N absorption and assimilation. However, the exogenous EBR application effects' on N absorption and assimilation in apple exposed to the salt-stressed condition remains unclear. Methods We sprayed exogenous EBR (0.2 mg L-1) on apple dwarf rootstock (M9T337) seedlings (growing hydroponically) under salt (NaCl) stress in a growth chamber. We analyzed the seedling development, photosynthesis and its-mediated C fixation, N ( NO 3 - ) absorption and assimilation in reponse to exogenous EBR application under salt stress. Results The findings demonstrated that NaCl stress greatly hampered seedlings' root growth and that exogenous EBR application obviously alleviated this growth suppression. Exogenous EBR-treated plants under NaCl stress displayed the more ideal root morphology and root activity, stronger salt stress tolerance and photosynthetic capacity as well as higher C- and N-assimilation enzyme activities, NO 3 - ion flow rate and nitrate transporter gene expression level than did untreated plants. Furthermore, the results of isotope labeling noted that exogenous EBR application also enhanced 13C-photoassimilate transport from leaves to roots and 15 NO 3 - transport from roots to leaves under NaCl stress. Conclusion Our findings imply that exogenous EBR application, through strengthening photosynthesis, C- and N-assimilation enzyme activities, nitrate absorption and transport as well as synchronized optimizing the distribution of seedlings' C and N, has a fundamental role in improving NUE in apple rootstock seedlings under salt stress.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) have significant effects on apple peel color. To further understand the molecular mechanism of N-K regulation of apple color, we analyzed the apple peel under different N and K treatments using isotope labeling, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. Under high N treatments, fruit red color and anthocyanin content decreased significantly. High N decreased the 13C distribution rate and increased the Ndff values of fruits, while K increased the expression of MdSUTs and MdSOTs and promoted 13C transportation to fruits. Anthocyanin-targeted metabonomics and transcriptome analysis revealed that high N downregulated the expression of structural genes related to the anthocyanin synthesis pathway (MdPAL, Md4CL, MdF3H, MdANS, and MdUFGT) and their regulators (MdMYBs and MdbHLHs), and also decreased some metabolites contents. K alleviated this inhibition and seven anthocyanins were regulated by N-K. Our results improve the understanding of the synergistic regulation of apple fruit coloring by N-K.

Abstract
Excessive nitrogen (N) supply often leads to an imbalance of carbon (C) and N metabolism and inhibits plant growth. Sucrose, an important source and signaling substance of C in plants, is closely linked to N metabolism. However, it is not clear whether exogenous sucrose can mitigate the inhibitory effect of high N on plant growth by regulating C and N metabolism. In this study, we investigated the effects of exogenous sucrose on the growth, N metabolism, and C assimilation in the apple rootstock M26 seedlings under normal (5 mM NO3-, NN) and high (30 mM NO3-, HN) NO3- concentrations. Our results showed that high NO3- supply reduced plant growth, photosynthesis, and chlorophyll fluorescence, but spraying with 1% sucrose (HN + 1% Sucrose) significantly alleviated this inhibition. Application of 1% sucrose increased sucrose and sorbitol contents as well as sucrose-phosphate synthase and sucrose synthase activities in the plants under HN treatment and promoted the distribution of 13C photoassimilation products to the root. In addition, spraying with 1% sucrose alleviated the inhibition of N metabolizing enzyme activities by high NO3- supply, reduced NO3- accumulation and N content, increased free amino acid content, and promoted 15N distribution to the aboveground parts. However, spraying with 1% sucrose under the NN treatment negatively affected plant photosynthesis and carbon assimilation. In conclusion, exogenous sucrose increased the C level in plants in the presence of excess N, promoted the balance of C and N metabolism, and alleviated the inhibitory effect of high N on the apple plant growth.

Abstract
Malus sieversii grows on the slopes of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang where the difference in daily temperature is significant. In recent years, the rhizosphere soil health of Malus sieversii has been severely impacted by anthropogenic disturbance and pathogenic infestation. The soil nutrient content and soil microorganism diversity are the main components of soil health. Low temperature has negative effects on soil bacterial community structure by inhibiting the accumulation of carbon and nitrogen. However, the effects of temperature and nitrogen application on soil carbon and nitrogen accumulation and the bacterial community composition in the rhizosphere soil of Malus sieversii are unclear. We set two temperature levels, i.e., low temperature (L) and room temperature (R), combined with no nitrogen (N0) and nitrogen application (N1) to explore the response of plant carbon and nitrogen uptake, rhizosphere soil carbon and nitrogen accumulation and bacterial community composition to temperature and nitrogen fertilization. At the same temperature level, plant 13C abundance (P-Atom13C), plant 15N absolute abundance (P-Con15N), soil 15N abundance (S-Atom15N) and soil urease, protease and glutaminase activities were significantly higher under nitrogen application compared with the no-nitrogen application treatment. The bacterial community diversity and richness indices of the apple rhizosphere soil in the N1 treatment were higher than those in the N0 treatment. The relative abundances of Actinobacteria, Rhodopseudomonas, and Bradyrhizobium were higher in the LN1 treatment than in the LN0 treatment. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that plant 13C absolute abundance (P-Con13C) and plant 15N absolute abundance (P-Con15N) were the main factors affecting the soil bacterial community composition. In summary, Nitrogen application can alleviate the effects of low temperature stress on the soil bacterial community and is of benefit for the uptakes of carbon and nitrogen in Malus sieversii plants.

Abstract
Abiotic stress, especially a lack of water, can significantly reduce crop yields. In this study, we evaluated the physiological and biochemical effects of potassium sulfate (K2SO4) fertilizer and varied irrigation regimes on the economically significant oilseed crop, Brassica juncea L, under open field conditions. Two cultivars (RH-725 and RH-749) of B. juncea were used in a randomized complete block design experiment with three replicates. Irrigation regimes consisted of a control (double irrigation: once at the 50% flowering and another at 50% fruiting stages), early irrigation (at 50% flowering only), late irrigation (at 50% fruiting only) and stress (no irrigation). The K2SO4 applications were: control (K0, no fertilization); K1, 10 kg ha-1; and K2, 20 kg ha-1. We measured growth via fresh and dry plant weight, plant height, root length, and leaf area. All the growth parameters were higher in RH-749. The physiological attributes, including the membrane stability index and relative water content, were higher at the 50% flowering stage in RH-749. The amount of antioxidant enzymes (catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (POX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) was enhanced when both plants were fertilized during water stress. All of these enzymes had higher activity in RH-749. The total chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate were considerably higher in RH-749, which leaked fewer electrolytes and maintained a less destructive osmotic potential under limited water conditions. The results indicated that it is water-stress tolerant when given a high concentration of K2SO4, which alleviated the adverse effects of water stress on growth and physiology.

Abstract
Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is common in Chinese apple production. High N reduced the contents of soluble sugar and total flavonoids by 16.05 and 19.01%, respectively, resulting in poor fruit quality. Moreover, high N increased the total N and decreased the total C and C/N ratio of apple fruits. On the basis of the transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses, the global network was revealed. High N inhibited the accumulation of carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, and trehalose) and flavonoids (rhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside, rutin, and trihydroxyisoflavone-7-O-galactoside) in fruits, and more C skeletons were used to synthesize amino acids and their derivatives (especially low C/N ratio, e.g., arginine) to be transferred to N metabolism. This study revealed new insights into the decline in soluble sugar and flavonoids caused by high N, and hub genes (MD07G1172700, MD05G1222800, MD16G1227200, MD01G1174400, and MD02G1207200) and hub proteins (PFK, gapN, and HK) were obtained.

Abstract
Mineral nutrition, taken up from the soil or foliar sprayed, plays fundamental roles in plant growth and development. Among of at least 14 mineral elements, the macronutrients nitrogen (N), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and calcium (Ca) and the micronutrient iron (Fe) are essential to Rosaceae fruit yield and quality. Deficiencies in minerals strongly affect metabolism with subsequent impacts on the growth and development of fruit trees. This ultimately affects the yield, nutritional value, and quality of fruit. Especially, the main reason of the postharvest storage loss caused by physiological disorders is the improper proportion of mineral nutrient elements. In recent years, many important mineral transport proteins and their regulatory components are increasingly revealed, which make drastic progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms for mineral nutrition (N, P, K, Ca, and Fe) in various aspects including plant growth, fruit development, quality, nutrition, and postharvest storage. Importantly, many studies have found that mineral nutrition, such as N, P, and Fe, not only affects fruit quality directly but also influences the absorption and the content of other nutrient elements. In this review, we provide insights of the mineral nutrients into their function, transport, signal transduction associated with Rosaceae fruit quality, and postharvest storage at physiological and molecular levels. These studies will contribute to provide theoretical basis to improve fertilizer efficient utilization and fruit industry sustainable development.

Abstract
The larch adelgid Adelges laricis laricis Vallot is a specialist insect parasite of Picea koraiensis (Korean spruce) and forms fish scale-like galls that damage the growth of the host plants. Our investigation reveals that both these galls and the fruits (cones) of P. koraiensis display lower concentrations of phytosynthetic pigments and accumulate anthocyanin cyanidin-3-O-glucoside and soluble sugars in the mature stages. Interestingly, high concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) both in the cauline gall tissues and in the larch adelgids themselves (4064.61 ± 167.83 and 3655.42 ± 210.29 ng/g FW, respectively), suggested that this vital phytohormone may be synthesized by the insects to control the development of gall tissues. These results indicate that the galls and cones are sink organs, and the development of gall tissues is possibly regulated by phytohormones in a way similar to that of the growth of cones. The concentrations of phytohormones related to growth [indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), cytokinins (CTK), and gibberellins (GAs)] and defense [salicylic acid (SA)], as well as SA-related phenolics [benzoic acid (BA) and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (pHBA)] in gall tissues were positively correlated with those in cones during the development stage. The levels of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) in the developmental stage of the cones correlates negatively with their concentrations in the gall tissues (R = -0.92, p < 0.001), suggesting that downregulation of ACC might be the reason why galls are not abscised after a year. Our results provide a new perspective on the potential mechanism of the development of cauline galls on P. koraiensis, which are regulated by phytohormones.

Abstract
In order to define translocation characteristics of 13C-photoassimilates to fruit during the fruit development stage in 'Fuji' apple, the 13C labeled tracer method was used in whole five-year-old 'Fuji'3/M26/Malus hupehensis (Pamp.) Rehder apple trees at different days after flowering (DAF). The changes in 13C translocation to the fruit, source strength of the leaves, and sink strength of the fruits were assessed. The results indicated that the δ13C value and 13C distribution rate of the fruit increased first and then decreased with the increase in the fruit development period, being higher from 120 to 135 DAF. The leaves appeared to moderately senesce in an attempt to maintain high photosynthesis during 120-135 DAF, which promoted the outward transport of photoassimilates. The single fruit weight and longitudinal and transverse diameter of the fruit increased rapidly during 120-150 DAF, which increased the sink zone for the unloading of photoassimilates in the fruit. The activity of sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) and amylase (AM), the content of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), the gibberellin (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) in the fruit flesh, and the gene expression levels of MdSOT1, MdSOT2, MdSOT3, MdSUT1, and MdSUT4 in the fruit stalk tissue were higher during 120-135 DAF. At this point, the difference in the sorbitol content between the fruit stalk and fruit flesh was also at the highest level of the entire year. These factors together increased the sink activity of the fruit, thus improving the photoassimilate transport efficiency to the fruit.

Abstract
In order to solve the problems of nitrogen (N) losses and fruit quality degradation caused by excessive N fertilizer application, different dosages of the nitrification inhibitor, 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg kg-1 soil), were applied during the later stage of 'Red Fuji' apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) fruit expansion in 2017 and 2018. The effects of DMPP on soil N transformation, carbon (C)-N nutrition of tree, and fruit quality were investigated. Results revealed that DMPP decreased the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) amoA gene, increased the retention of NH4 +-N, and decreased NO3 --N concentration and its vertical migration in soil. DMPP reduced 15N loss rates and increased 15N residual and recovery rates compared to the control. 13C and 15N double isotope labeling results revealed that DMPP reduced the capacity of 15N absorption and regulation in fruits, decreased 15N accumulation in fruits and whole plant, and increased the distribution of 13C from vegetative organs to fruits. DMPP increased fruit anthocyanin and soluble sugar contents, and had no significant effect on fruit yield. The comprehensive analysis revealed that the application of 1 mg DMPP kg-1 soil during the later stage of fruit expansion effectively reduced losses due to N and alleviated quality degradation caused by excessive N fertilizer application.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is one of the most required mineral elements for plant growth, and potassium (K) plays a vital role in nitrogen metabolism, both elements being widely applied as fertilizers in agricultural production. However, the exact relationship between K and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) remains unclear. Apple dwarf rootstock seedlings (M9T337) were used to study the impacts of different K levels on plant growth, nitrogen metabolism, and carbon (C) assimilation in water culture experiments for 2 years. The results showed that both deficiency and excess K inhibited the growth and root development of M9T337 seedlings. When the K supply concentration was 0 mM and 12 mM, the biomass of each organ, root-shoot ratio, root activity and NO3 - ion flow rate decreased significantly, net photosynthetic rate (P n) and photochemical efficiency (F v/F m) being lower. Meanwhile, seedlings treated with 6 mM K+ had higher N and C metabolizing enzyme activities and higher nitrate transporter gene expression levels (NRT1.1; NRT2.1). 13C and 15N labeling results showed that deficiency and excess K could not only reduce 15N absorption and 13C assimilation accumulation of M9T337 seedlings, but also reduced the 15N distribution ratio in leaves and 13C distribution ratio in roots. These results suggest that appropriate K supply (6 mM) was optimal as it enhanced photoassimilate transport from leaves to roots and increased NUE by influencing photosynthesis, C and N metabolizing enzyme activities, nitrate assimilation gene activities, and nitrate transport.
