Review on Silver Nanoparticles as a Novel Class of Antibacterial Solutions

Silver and Copper Nanoparticle-Loaded Self-Assembled Pseudo-Peptide Thiourea-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Gel with Antibacterial and Superhydrophobic Properties for Antifouling Surfaces

The escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance has become a global health crisis. Therefore, there is a rising momentum in developing biomaterials with self-sanitizing capabilities and inherent antibacterial properties. Despite their promising antimicrobial properties, metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have several disadvantages, including increased toxicity as the particle size decreases, leading to oxidative stress and DNA damage that need consideration. One solution is surface functionalization with biocompatible organic ligands, which can improve nanoparticle dispersibility, reduce aggregation, and enable targeted delivery to microbial cells. The existing research predominantly concentrates on the advancement of peptide-based hydrogels for coating materials to prevent bacterial infection, with limited exploration of developing surface coatings using organogels. Herein, we have synthesized organogel-based coatings doped with MNPs that can offer superior hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, and high stability that are not easily achievable with hydrogels. The self-assembled gels displayed distinct morphologies, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The cross-linked matrix helps in the controlled and sustained release of MNPs at the site of bacterial infection. The synthesized self-assembled gel@MNPs exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and reduced bacterial viability up to 95% within 4 h. Cytotoxicity testing against metazoan cells demonstrated that the gels doped with MNPs were nontoxic (IC50 > 100 μM) to mammalian cells. Furthermore, in this study, we coated the organogel@MNPs on cotton fabric and tested it against Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria. Additionally, the developed cotton fabric exhibited superhydrophobic properties and developed a barrier that limits the interaction between bacteria and the surface, making it difficult for bacteria to adhere and colonize, which holds potential as a valuable resource for self-cleaning coatings.

Antimicrobial Properties of Newly Developed Silver-Enriched Red Onion-Polymer Composites

Simple low-cost, nontoxic, environmentally friendly plant-extract-based polymer films play an important role in their application in medicine, the food industry, and agriculture. The addition of silver nanoparticles to the composition of these films enhances their antimicrobial capabilities and makes them suitable for the treatment and prevention of infections. In this study, polymer-based gels and films (AgRonPVA) containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were produced at room temperature from fresh red onion peel extract ("Ron"), silver nitrate, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Silver nanoparticles were synthesized directly in a polymer matrix, which was irradiated by UV light. The presence of nanoparticles was approved by analyzing characteristic local surface plasmon resonance peaks occurring in UV-Vis absorbance spectra of irradiated experimental samples. The proof of evidence was supported by the results of XRD and EDX measurements. The diffusion-based method was applied to investigate the antimicrobial activity of several types of microbes located in the environment of the produced samples. Bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC BAA 747, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442; yeasts Candida parapsilosis CBS 8836 and Candida albicans ATCC 90028; and microscopic fungi assays Aspergillus flavus BTL G-33 and Aspergillus fumigatus BTL G-38 were used in this investigation. The greatest effect was observed on Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, defining these films as potential candidates for antimicrobial applications. The antimicrobial features of the films were less effective against fungi and the weakest against yeasts.

Antibacterial and Antiviral Activities of Silver Nanocluster/Silica Composite Coatings Deposited onto Air Filters

The indoor air quality should be better controlled and improved to avoid numerous health issues. Even if different devices are developed for air filtration, the proliferation of microorganisms under certain conditions must be controlled. For this purpose, a silver nanocluster/silica composite coating was deposited via a cosputtering technique onto fiber glass and polymeric based substrates. The aim of this work is focused on the evaluation of the antibacterial and antiviral effects of the developed coating. The preliminary results of the compositional and morphological tests showed an evenly distributed coating on filters surfaces. Several antibacterial tests were performed, confirming strong effect both in qualitative and quantitative methods, against S. epidermidis and E. coli. To understand if the coating can stop the proliferation of bacteria colonies spread on it, simulation of everyday usage of filters was performed, nebulizing bacteria solution with high colonies concentration and evaluating the inhibition of bacteria growth. Additionally, a deep understanding of the virucidal action and mechanism of Ag nanoclusters of the coating was performed. The effect of the coating both in aqueous medium and in dry methods was evaluated, in comparison with analysis on ions release. The virucidal performances are assessed against the human coronavirus OC43 strain (HCoV-OC43).

Silver/Graphene Oxide Nanostructured Coatings for Modulating the Microbial Susceptibility of Fixation Devices Used in Knee Surgery

Exploring silver-based and carbon-based nanomaterials' excellent intrinsic antipathogenic effects represents an attractive alternative for fabricating anti-infective formulations. Using chemical synthesis protocols, stearate-conjugated silver (Ag@C18) nanoparticles and graphene oxide nanosheets (nGOs) were herein obtained and investigated in terms of composition and microstructure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations revealed the formation of nanomaterials with desirable physical properties, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed the high purity of synthesized nanomaterials. Further, laser-processed Ag@C18-nGO coatings were developed, optimized, and evaluated in terms of biological and microbiological outcomes. The highly biocompatible Ag@C18-nGO nanostructured coatings proved suitable candidates for the local modulation of biofilm-associated periprosthetic infections.

Microalga Broths Synthesize Antibacterial and Non-Cytotoxic Silver Nanoparticles Showing Synergy with Antibiotics and Bacterial ROS Induction and Can Be Reused for Successive AgNP Batches

The era of increasing bacterial antibiotic resistance requires new approaches to fight infections. With this purpose, silver-based nanomaterials are a reality in some fields and promise new developments. We report the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using culture broths from a microalga. Broths from two media, with different compositions and pHs and sampled at two growth phases, produced eight AgNP types. Nanoparticles harvested after several synthesis periods showed differences in antibacterial activity and stability. Moreover, an evaluation of the broths for several consecutive syntheses did not find relevant kinetics or activity differences until the third round. Physicochemical characteristics of the AgNPs (core and hydrodynamic sizes, Z-potential, crystallinity, and corona composition) were determined, observing differences depending on the broths used. AgNPs showed good antibacterial activity at concentrations producing no or low cytotoxicity on cultured eukaryotic cells. All the AgNPs had high levels of synergy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the classic antibiotics streptomycin and kanamycin, but with ampicillin only against S. aureus and tetracycline against E. coli. Differences in the synergy levels were also dependent on the types of AgNPs. We also found that, for some AgNPs, the killing of bacteria started before the massive accumulation of ROS.

Spectrophotometrically, Spectroscopically, Microscopically and Thermogravimetrically Optimized TiO2 and ZnO Nanoparticles and their Bactericidal, Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Potential: A Novel Comparative Approach

Current study was aimed to determine the antibacterial, antioxidant and cytotoxic potential of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) and Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). Nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, particle size analyzer (PSA), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by standard agar dilution method. Antibacterial potential of nanoparticles was analyzed by standard disc diffusion method against bacterial strains including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Different concentrations of NPs (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 mg/mL) were incorporated to evaluate the antimicrobial activity. Antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of these NPs was analyzed by DPPH method and brine shrimp cytotoxicity assay, respectively. The MIC of TiO2NPs against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae was 0.04, 0.08 and 0.07 mg/mL respectively while the MIC of ZnONPs against the above strains was 0.01, 0.015 and 0.01 mg/mL. The maximum zone of inhibition was observed for K. pneumoniae i.e., 20mm and 25mm against TiO2 and ZnO NPs respectively, at 1.4 mg/mL concentration of NPs. The susceptibility of NPs against bacterial strains was evaluated in the following order: K. pneumoniae > P. aeruginosa > E. coli. The antioxidant activity of nanoparticles increased by increasing the concentration of NPs while cytotoxic analysis exhibited non-toxic effect of ZnO NPs while TiO2 had toxic effects on 1.2 and 1.4 mg/mL concentrations. Results revealed that ZnO NPs have more antibacterial and negligible cytotoxic potential in contrast to TiO2 NPs.

Simultaneous Enhancement of Flame Resistance and Antimicrobial Activity in Epoxy Nanocomposites Containing Phosphorus and Silver-Based Additives

The design and manufacture of innovative multifunctional materials possessing superior characteristics, quality and standards, rigorously required for future development of existing or emerging advanced technologies, is of great importance. These materials should have a very low degree of influence (or none) on the environmental and human health. Adjusting the properties of epoxy resins with organophosphorus compounds and silver-containing additives is key to the simultaneous improvement of the flame-resistant and antimicrobial properties of advanced epoxy-based materials. These environmentally friendly epoxy resin nanocomposites were manufactured using two additives, a reactive phosphorus-containing bisphenol derived from vanillin, namely, (4-(((4-hidroxyphenyl)amino)(6-oxido-6H-dibenzo[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphinin-6-yl)methyl)-2-methoxyphenyl) phenylphosphonate (BPH), designed as both cross-linking agent and a flame-retardant additive for epoxy resin; and additional silver-loaded zeolite L nanoparticles (Ze-Ag NPs) used as a doping additive to impart antimicrobial activity. The effect of BPH and Ze-Ag NPs content on the structural, morphological, thermal, flame resistance and antimicrobial characteristics of thermosetting epoxy nanocomposites was investigated. The structure and morphology of epoxy nanocomposites were investigated via FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In general, the nanocomposites had a glassy and homogeneous morphology. The samples showed a single glass transition temperature in the range of 166-194 °C and an initiation decomposition temperature in the range of 332-399 °C. The introduction of Ze-Ag NPs in a concentration of 7-15 wt% provided antimicrobial activity to epoxy thermosets.

A Microfluidic Approach for Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles as a Potential Antimicrobial Agent in Alginate-Hyaluronic Acid-Based Wound Dressings

The recognized antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles is a well-studied property, especially when designing and developing biomaterials with medical applications. As biological activity is closely related to the physicochemical characteristics of a material, aspects such as particle morphology and dimension should be considered. Microfluidic systems in continuous flow represent a promising method to control the size, shape, and size distribution of synthesized nanoparticles. Moreover, using microfluidics widens the synthesis options by creating and controlling parameters that are otherwise difficult to maintain in conventional batch procedures. This study used a microfluidic platform with a cross-shape design as an innovative method for synthesizing silver nanoparticles and varied the precursor concentration and the purging speed as experimental parameters. The compositional and microstructural characterization of the obtained samples was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Four formulations of alginate-based hydrogels with the addition of hyaluronic acid and silver nanoparticles were obtained to highlight the antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles and the efficiency of such a composite in wound treatment. The porous structure, swelling capacity, and biological properties were evaluated through physicochemical analysis (FT-IR and SEM) and through contact with prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The results of the physicochemical and biological investigations revealed desirable characteristics for performant wound dressings (i.e., biocompatibility, appropriate porous structure, swelling rate, and degradation rate, ability to inhibit biofilm formation, and cell growth stimulation capacity), and the obtained materials are thus recommended for treating chronic and infected wounds.

Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles Obtained via Radiolysis: Synthesis Optimization and Antibacterial Properties

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties are gaining increasing interest in fighting multidrug-resistant bacteria. Herein, we describe the synthesis of AgNPs, stabilized by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), with high purity and homogeneous sizes, using radiolysis. Solvated electrons and reducing radicals are induced from solvent radiolysis and no other chemical reducing agents are needed to reduce the metal ions. Another advantage of this method is that it leads to sterile colloidal suspensions, which can be directly used for medical applications. We systematically investigated the effect of the silver salt precursor on the optical properties, particle size, and morphology of the resulting colloidal AgNPs. With Ag₂SO₄ precursor, the AgNPs displayed a narrow size distribution (20 ± 2 nm). In contrast, AgNO₃ and AgClO₄ precursors lead to inhomogeneous AgNPs of various shapes. Moreover, the optimized AgNPs synthesized from Ag₂SO₄ were stable upon storage in water and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and were very effective in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at a concentration of 0.6 μg·mL^-1 while completely eradicating it at a concentration of 5.6 μg·mL^-1. When compared with other AgNPs prepared by other strategies, the remarkable bactericidal ability against S. aureus of the AgNPs produced here opens up new perspectives for further applications in medicine, cosmetics, the food industry, or in elaborating antibacterial surfaces and other devices.

Ganoderma lucidum-Mediated Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles with Antimicrobial Activity

"Green chemistry" is a simple and easily reproductible method that provides nanoparticles characterized by better stability and good dispersion in an aqueous solution. Nanoparticles can be synthesized by algae, bacteria, fungi, and plant extracts. Ganoderma lucidum is a commonly used medicinal mushroom with distinctive biological properties, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, etc. In this study, aqueous mycelial extracts of Ganoderma lucidum were used to reduce AgNO₃ to form silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The biosynthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The maximum UV absorption was obtained at 420 nm, which represents the specific surface plasmon resonance band for biosynthesized silver nanoparticles. SEM images showed particles as predominantly spherical, while FTIR spectroscopic studies illustrated the presence of functional groups that can support the reducing of ion Ag⁺ to Ag(0). XRD peaks ratified the presence of AgNPs. The antimicrobial effectiveness of synthesized nanoparticles was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial and yeasts strains. The silver nanoparticles were effective against pathogens, inhibiting their proliferation, and thus reducing the risk to the environment and to public health.

Antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity of silver nanoparticles biosynthesized with Cystoseira algae extracts

Antimicrobial resistance is an ever-growing global concern to public health with no clear or immediate solution. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have long been proposed as efficient agents to fight the growing number of antibiotic-resistant strains. However, the synthesis of these particles is often linked to high costs and the use of toxic, hazardous chemicals, with environmental and health impact. In this study, we successfully produced AgNPs by green synthesis with the aid of the extract of two brown algae-Cystoseira baccata (CB) and Cystoseira tamariscifolia (CT)-and characterized their physico-chemical properties. The NPs produced in both cases (Ag@CB and Ag@CT) present similar sizes, with mean diameters of around 22 nm. The antioxidant activity of the extracts and the NPs was evaluated, with the extracts showing important antioxidant activity. The bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties of both Ag@CB and Ag@CT were tested and compared with gold NPs produced in the same algae extracts as previously reported. AgNPs demonstrated the strongest bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties, at concentrations as low as 2.16 µg/mL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Finally, the capacity of these samples to prevent the formation of biofilms characteristic of infections with a poorer outcome was assessed, obtaining similar results. This work points towards an alternative for the treatment of bacterial infections, even biofilm-inducing, with the possibility of minimizing the risk of drug resistance, albeit the necessary caution implied using metallic NPs.

Exogenously Applied Cyclitols and Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles Affect the Soluble Carbohydrate Profiles of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Seedling

Cyclitols, such as myo-inositol and its isomers and methyl derivatives (i.e., d-chiro-inositol and d-pinitol (3-O-methyl-chiro-inositol)), are classified as osmolytes and osmoprotectants and are significantly involved in plant responses to abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity and cold. Moreover, d-pinitol demonstrates a synergistic effect with glutathione (GSH), increasing its antioxidant properties. However, the role of cyclitols in plant protection against stresses caused by metal nanoparticles is not yet known. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of myo-inositol, d-chiro-inositol and d-pinitol on wheat germination, seedling growth and changes in the profile of soluble carbohydrates in response to biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles ((Bio)Ag NPs). It was found that cyclitols were absorbed by germinating grains and transported within the growing seedlings but this process was disrupted by (Bio)Ag NPs. Cyclitols applied alone induced sucrose and 1-kestose accumulation in seedlings slightly, while (Bio)Ag NP doubled the concentrations of both sugars. This coincided with a decrease in monosaccharides; i.e., fructose and glucose. Cyclitols and (Bio)Ag NPs present in the endosperm resulted in reductions in monosaccharides, maltose and maltotriose, with no effect on sucrose and 1-kestose. Similar changes occurred in seedlings developing from primed grains. Cyclitols that accumulated in grain and seedlings during grain priming with d-pinitol and glutathione did not prevent the phytotoxic effects of (Bio)Ag NPs.

Antibacterial, Anti-Biofilm and Pro-Migratory Effects of Double Layered Hydrogels Packaged with Lactoferrin-DsiRNA-Silver Nanoparticles for Chronic Wound Therapy

Antimicrobial resistance and biofilm formation in diabetic foot infections worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in more severe infections and increased amputations. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a dressing that could effectively aid in the wound healing process and prevent bacterial infections by exerting both antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and lactoferrin (LTF) have been investigated as alternative antimicrobial and anti-biofilm agents, respectively, while dicer-substrate short interfering RNA (DsiRNA) has also been studied for its wound healing effect in diabetic wounds. In this study, AgNPs were complexed with LTF and DsiRNA via simple complexation before packaging in gelatin hydrogels. The formed hydrogels exhibited 1668% maximum swellability, with a 46.67 ± 10.33 µm average pore size. The hydrogels demonstrated positive antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects toward the selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The hydrogel containing AgLTF at 125 µg/mL was also non-cytotoxic on HaCaT cells for up to 72 h of incubation. The hydrogels containing DsiRNA and LTF demonstrated superior pro-migratory effects compared to the control group. In conclusion, the AgLTF-DsiRNA-loaded hydrogel possessed antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and pro-migratory activities. These findings provide a further understanding and knowledge on forming multipronged AgNPs consisting of DsiRNA and LTF for chronic wound therapy.

Silver Nanoparticles: Review of Antiviral Properties, Mechanism of Action and Applications

New antiviral drugs and new preventive antiviral strategies are a target of intense scientific interest. Thanks to their peculiar properties, nanomaterials play an important role in this field, and, in particular, among metallic materials, silver nanoparticles were demonstrated to be effective against a wide range of viruses, in addition to having a strong antibacterial effect. Although the mechanism of antiviral action is not completely clarified, silver nanoparticles can directly act on viruses, and on their first steps of interaction with the host cell, depending on several factors, such as size, shape, functionalization and concentration. This review provides an overview of the antiviral properties of silver nanoparticles, along with their demonstrated mechanisms of action and factors mainly influencing their properties. In addition, the fields of potential application are analyzed, demonstrating the versatility of silver nanoparticles, which can be involved in several devices and applications, including biomedical applications, considering both human and animal health, environmental applications, such as air filtration and water treatment, and for food and textile industry purposes. For each application, the study level of the device is indicated, if it is either a laboratory study or a commercial product.

Effects of Different Nanoparticles on Microbes

Nanoparticles widely exist in nature and may be formed through inorganic or organic pathways, exhibiting unique physical and chemical properties different from those of bulk materials. However, little is known about the potential consequences of nanomaterials on microbes in natural environments. Herein, we investigated the interactions between microbes and nanoparticles by performing experiments on the inhibition effects of gold, ludox and laponite nanoparticles on Escherichia coli in liquid Luria–Bertani (LB) medium at different nanoparticle concentrations. These nanoparticles were shown to be effective bactericides. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed the distinct aggregation of cells and nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed considerable cell membrane disruption due to nanoparticle accumulation on the cell surfaces, resulting in cell death. We hypothesized that this nanoparticle accumulation on the cell surfaces not only disrupted the cell membranes but also physically blocked the microbes from accessing nutrients. An iron-reducing bacterium, Shewanella putrefaciens, was tested for its ability to reduce the Fe (III) in solid ferrihydrite (HFO) or aqueous ferric citrate in the presence of laponite nanoparticles. It was found that the laponite nanoparticles inhibited the reduction of the Fe (III) in solid ferrihydrite. Moreover, direct contact between the cells and solid Fe (III) coated with the laponite nanoparticles was physically blocked, as confirmed by SEM images and particle size measurements. However, the laponite particles had an insignificant effect on the extent of aqueous Fe (III) bioreduction but slightly enhanced the rate of bioreduction of the Fe (III) in aqueous ferric citrate. The slightly increased rate of bioreduction by laponite nanoparticles may be due to the removal of inhibitory Fe (II) from the cell surface by its sorption onto the laponite nanoparticle surface. This result indicates that the scavenging of toxic heavy metals, such as Fe (II), by nanoparticles may be beneficial for microbes in the environment. On the other hand, microbial cells are also capable of detoxifying nanoparticles by coagulating nanoparticles with extracellular polymeric substances or by changing nanoparticle morphologies. Hence, the interactions between microbes and nanoparticles in natural environments should receive more attention.

Optimization of a silver-nanoprism conjugated with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine towards easy-to-make colorimetric analysis of acetaldehyde: a new platform towards rapid analysis of carcinogenic agents and environmental technology

Acetaldehyde acts as an important mediator in the metabolism of plants and animals; however, its abnormal level can cause problems in biological processes. Although acetaldehyde is found naturally in many organisms, exposure to high concentrations can have effects on the eyes, respiratory system, etc. Due to the importance of detecting acetaldehyde in environmental samples and biofluids, determination of its concentration is highly demanded. There are some reports showing exposure to high concentrations of acetaldehyde for a long time can increase the risk of cancer by reacting with DNA. In this work, we presented a novel colorimetric method for rapid and sensitive detection of acetaldehyde with high reproducibility using different AgNPs with various morphologies. The redox reaction between AgNPs, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) solution, and analytes endows a color change in 15 minutes that is detectable by the naked eye. UV spectrophotometry was further used for quantitative analysis. An iron mold with a hexagonal pattern and liquid paraffin were also used to prepare the paper-based microfluidic substrate, as a low cost, accessible, and rapid detection tool. Different types of AgNPs showed different lower limits of quantification (LLOQ). The AgNPs-Cit and AgNPrs could identify acetaldehyde with linear range of 10^-7 to 10 M and an LLOQ of 10^-7 M. The AgNWs showed the best color change activity with a linear range 10^-5 to 10 M and the lowest diagnostic limit is 10^-5 M. Finally, analysis of human biofluids as real samples were successfully performed using this system.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles as carrier to overcome bacterial drug resistant barriers

Antibiotic resistance has become a global threat to health due to abuse of antibiotics. Lots of existing antibiotics have lost their effect on drug resistant bacteria. Moreover, the discovery of novel antibiotics becomes more and more difficult. It is necessary to develop new strategies to fight against antibiotic resistance. Nano-drug delivery systems endow old antibiotics with new vitality to defeat the antibiotic resistant barrier by protecting antibiotics against hydrolysis, increasing uptake and circumventing efflux pump. Among them, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are one of the most extensively investigated as carrier of antibiotics due to large drug loading capability, tunable physicochemical characteristics, and biocompatibility. MSNs can improve the delivery of antibiotics to bacteria greatly by reducing size, modifying surface, and regulating shapes. Furthermore, MSNs hybridized metal ions or metal nanoparticles exert stronger antibacterial effect by controlling the release of metal ions or increasing active oxygen species. In addition, metal capped MSNs are also able to load antibiotics to exert synergistic antibacterial effect. This paper firstly reviewed the current application of various nanomaterials as antibacterial agents, and then focused on the MSNs including the introduction of MSNs and various approaches for improving antibacterial effect of MSNs.

Novel Microbial Palladium Nanoparticles with a High Photothermal Effect for Antibacterial Applications

Novel biocompatible palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) have been prepared by microorganisms via Bacillus megaterium Y-4. It was demonstrated that ultrasonication treatment of biologically reduced Pd-NPs impart a much higher absorption in NIR regions and a better photothermal conversion efficiency to the material. The as-prepared material showed excellent biocompatibility and antibacterial activity under NIR irradiation. In less than 10 min, the disinfection efficiency for a low dosage of Pd-NPs (20 mg/L) was 99.99% toward both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The exclusive and even dispersed microbial Pd-NPs display a high efficiency of photothermal conversion under the irradiation of NIR, which endows them with excellent antibacterial activity in a low dosage.

Self-Healing Supramolecular Hydrogels with Antibacterial Abilities for Wound Healing

Wound healing due to skin defects is a growing clinical concern. Especially when infection occurs, it not only leads to impair healing of the wound but even leads to the occurrence of death. In this study, a self-healing supramolecular hydrogel with antibacterial abilities was developed for wound healing. The supramolecular hydrogels inherited excellent self-healing and mechanical properties are produced by the polymerization of N-acryloyl glycinamide monomers which carries a lot of amides. In addition, excellent antibacterial properties are obtained by integrating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the hydrogels. The resultant hydrogel has a demonstrated ability in superior mechanical properties, including stretchability and self-healing. Also, the good biocompatibility and antibacterial ability have been proven in hydrogels. Besides, the prepared hydrogels were employed as wound dressings to treat skin wounds of animals. It was found that the hydrogels could significantly promote wound repair, including relieving inflammation, promoting collagen deposition, and enhancing angiogenesis. Therefore, such self-healing supramolecular hydrogels with composite functional nanomaterials are expected to be used as new wound dressings in the field of healthcare.

Self-Disinfecting Urethral Catheter to Overcome Urinary Infections: From Antimicrobial Photodynamic Action to Antibacterial Biochemical Entities

Medical-device-related infections are considered a worldwide public health problem. In particular, urinary catheters are responsible for 75% of cases of hospital urinary infections (a mortality rate of 2.3%) and present a high cost for public and private health systems. Some actions have been performed and described aiming to avoid it, including clinical guidelines for catheterization procedure, antibiotic prophylaxis, and use of antimicrobial coated-urinary catheters. In this review paper, we present and discuss the functionalization of urinary catheters surfaces with antimicrobial entities (e.g., photosensitizers, antibiotics, polymers, silver salts, oxides, bacteriophage, and enzymes) highlighting the immobilization of photosensitizing molecules for antimicrobial photodynamic applications. Moreover, the characterization techniques and (photo)antimicrobial effects of the coated-urinary catheters are described and discussed. We highlight the most significant examples in the last decade (2011-2021) concerning the antimicrobial coated-urinary catheter and their potential use, limitations, and future perspectives.

Phase separation enabled silver nano-array

The surface-supported silver nanoparticles have been studied and applied in various applications. Many unique nanostructures have been introduced into this field to improve the functionalities of the surfaces depending on application purposes. We created featured silver nano-array surfaces by utilizing the solvent-mediated phase transition on the surface grafted with poly (acrylic) acids polymer chains and taking advantage of the low temperature of argon gas discharged plasma as a reducing agent. The applied solvents and grafted polymer chain densities affected the phase transition and thus determined the outcome of surface nano-array patterns. However, the total loaded silver ions on the surface affected silver nano-array structures at the sub-micron levels. The featured silver patterned surfaces made in the optimal conditions present a favorable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy enhancement as well as recyclability for detection re-usage. This novel method prepares tunable silver nanopatterned surfaces and provides a new approach to various potential applications.

Green Extracellular Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles by Pseudomonas alloputida, Their Growth and Biofilm-Formation Inhibitory Activities and Synergic Behavior with Three Classical Antibiotics

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is on the rise and hinders the fight against bacterial infections, which are expected to cause millions of deaths by 2050. New antibiotics are difficult to find, so alternatives are needed. One could be metal-based drugs, such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In general, chemical methods for AgNPs' production are potentially toxic, and the physical ones expensive, while green approaches are not. In this paper, we present the green synthesis of AgNPs using two Pseudomonas alloputida B003 UAM culture broths, sampled from their exponential and stationary growth phases. AgNPs were physicochemically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showing differential characteristics depending on the synthesis method used. Antibacterial activity was tested in three assays, and we compared the growth and biofilm-formation inhibition of six test bacteria: Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. We also monitored nanoparticles' synergic behavior through the growth inhibition of E. coli and S. aureus by three classical antibiotics: ampicillin, nalidixic acid, and streptomycin. The results indicate that very good AgNP activity was obtained with particularly low MICs for the three tested strains of P. aeruginosa. A good synergistic effect on streptomycin activity was observed for all the nanoparticles. For ampicillin, a synergic effect was detected only against S. aureus. ROS production was found to be related to the AgNPs' antibacterial activity.

Effectiveness of Snail Slime in the Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles

The development of green, low cost and sustainable synthetic routes to produce metal nanoparticles is of outmost importance, as these materials fulfill large scale applications in a number of different areas. Herein, snail slime extracted from Helix Aspersa snails was successfully employed both as bio-reducing agent of silver nitrate and as bio-stabilizer of the obtained nanoparticles. Several trials were carried out by varying temperature, the volume of snail slime and the silver nitrate concentration to find the best biogenic pathway to produce silver nanoparticles. The best results were obtained when the synthesis was performed at room temperature and neutral pH. UV-Visible Spectroscopy, SEM-TEM and FTIR were used for a detailed characterization of the nanoparticles. The obtained nanoparticles are spherical, with mean diameters measured from TEM images ranging from 15 to 30 nm and stable over time. The role of proteins and glycoproteins in the biogenic production of silver nanoparticles was elucidated. Infrared spectra clearly showed the presence of proteins all around the silver core. The macromolecular shell is also responsible of the effectiveness of the synthesized AgNPs to inhibit Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial growth.

Evaluation of Green Silver Nanoparticles Fabricated by Spirulina platensis Phycocyanin as Anticancer and Antimicrobial Agents

Green nanotechnology has attracted attention worldwide, especially in treating cancer and drug-resistant section 6 microbes. This work aims to investigate the anticancer activity of green silver nanoparticles synthesized by Spirulina platensis phycocyanin (SPAgNPs) on two cancer cell lines: Lung cancer cell line (A-549) and breast cancer cell line (MCF-7), compared to the normal human lung cell line (A138). We also aimed to investigate the bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29737, Bacillus cereus ATCC11778, Escherichia coli ATCC8379, and Klebsiella pneumonia, as well as the fungicidal activity against Candida albicans (ATCC6019) and Aspergillus niger. The obtained SPAgNPs were spherical and crystalline with a size of 30 nm and a net charge of −26.32 mV. Furthermore, they were surrounded by active groups responsible for stability. The SPAgNPs scavenged 85% of the DPPH radical with a relative increase of approximately 30% over the extract. The proliferation of cancer cells using the MTT assay clarified that both cancer cells (A-549 and MCF-7) are regularly inhibited as they grow on different concentrations of SPAgNPs. The maximum inhibitory effect of SPAgNPs (50 ppm) reached 90.99 and 89.51% against A-549 and MCF7, respectively. Regarding antimicrobial activity, no inhibition zones occurred in bacterial or fungal strains at low concentrations of SPAgNPs and the aqueous Spirulina platensis extract. However, at high concentrations, inhibition zones, especially SPAgNPs, were more potent for all tested microorganisms than their positive controls, with particular reference to Staphylococcus aureus, since the inhibition zones were 3.2, 3.8, and 4.3 mm, and Bacillus cereus was 2.37 mm when compared to tetracycline (2.33 mm). SPAgNPs have more potent antifungal activity, especially against Aspergillus niger, compared to their positive controls. We concluded that SPAgNPs are powerful agents against oxidative stress and microbial infection.

Cefotaxime incorporated bimetallic silver-selenium nanoparticles: promising antimicrobial synergism, antibiofilm activity, and bacterial membrane leakage reaction mechanism

In this research, we reported for the first time the simple incorporation of antibiotic cefotaxime (CFM) with the synthesized Ag NPs, Se NPs, and bimetallic Ag-Se NPs by gamma rays, as a promising cost-effective, and eco-friendly method. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by UV-Vis. spectroscopy, XRD, EDX, HR-TEM, SEM/mapping, and EDX studies. The antimicrobial synergistic potential was investigated after CFM drug incorporation. Antibiofilm activity, growth curve assay, and effect of UV illumination were examined against some pathogenic microbes. The antibacterial reaction mechanism was evaluated by protein leakage assay and SEM imaging. HRTEM imaging confirmed the spherical shape and an average diameter of 10.95, 20.54, and 12.69 nm for Ag NPs, Se NPs, and Ag-Se NPs, respectively. Ag NPs-CFM, Se NPs-CFM, and Ag-Se NPs-CFM possessed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (40, 42, and 43 mm ZOI, respectively), Escherichia coli (33, 35, and 34 mm ZOI, respectively) and Candida albicans (25, 22, and 23 mm ZOI, respectively). CFM-incorporated Ag-Se NPs were able to inhibit biofilm formation of S. aureus (96.09%), E. coli (98.32%), and C. albicans (95.93%). Based on the promising results, the synthesized nanocomposites showed superior antimicrobial potential at low concentrations and continued-phase durability; they may find use in pharmaceutical, and biomedical applications.

Functionalized Self-Assembled Monolayers: Versatile Strategies to Combat Bacterial Biofilm Formation

Bacterial infections due to biofilms account for up to 80% of bacterial infections in humans. With the increased use of antibiotic treatments, indwelling medical devices, disinfectants, and longer hospital stays, antibiotic resistant infections are sharply increasing. Annual deaths are predicted to outpace cancer and diabetes combined by 2050. In the past two decades, both chemical and physical strategies have arisen to combat biofilm formation on surfaces. One such promising chemical strategy is the formation of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), due to its small layer thickness, strong covalent bonds, typically facile synthesis, and versatility. With the goal of combating biofilm formation, the SAM could be used to tether an antibacterial agent such as a small-molecule antibiotic, nanoparticle, peptide, or polymer to the surface, and limit the agent’s release into its environment. This review focuses on the use of SAMs to inhibit biofilm formation, both on their own and by covalent grafting of a biocidal agent, with the potential to be used in indwelling medical devices. We conclude with our perspectives on ongoing challenges and future directions for this field.

Recent Advances in Green Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications of Bioactive Metallic Nanoparticles

Nanoparticles (NPs) are elements derived from a cluster of atoms with one or more dimensions in the nanometer scale in the range of 1–100 nm. The bio nanofabrication of metallic NPs is now an important dynamic area of research, with major significance in applied research. Biogenic synthesis of NPs is more desirable than physical and chemical synthesis due to its eco-friendliness, non-toxicity, lower energy consumption, and multifunctional nature. Plants outperform microorganisms as reducing agents as they contain large secondary biomolecules that accelerate the reduction and stability of the NPs. The produced NPs can then be studied spectroscopically (UV-Visible, XRD, Raman, IR, etc.) and microscopically (SEM, TEM, AFM, etc.). The biological reduction of a metallic ion or its oxide to a nanoparticle is quick, simple, and may be scaled up at room temperature and pressure. The rise in multi-drug resistant (MDR) microbes due to the immoderate use of antibiotics in non-infected patients is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in humans. The contemporary development of a new class of antibiotics with different mechanisms of action to kill microbes is crucial. Metals and their oxides are extremely toxic to microbes at unprecedentedly low concentrations. In addition, prevailing infections in plants and animals are raising significant concerns across the globe. NPs’ wide range of bioactivity makes them ideal antimicrobial agents in agricultural and medical fields. The present review outlines the synthesis of metallic NPs from botanicals, which enables the metals to be in a stabilized form even after ionization. It also presents a valuable database on the biofunctionalization of synthesized NPs for further drug development.

Recent Advances and Mechanistic Insights into Antibacterial Activity, Antibiofilm Activity, and Cytotoxicity of Silver Nanoparticles

The substantial increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacteria is a major threat to global health. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported possibilities of greater deaths due to bacterial infections than cancer. Nanomaterials, especially small-sized (size ≤10 nm) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), can be employed to combat these deadly bacterial diseases. However, high reactivity, instability, susceptibility to fast oxidation, and cytotoxicity remain crucial shortcomings for their uptake and clinical application. In this review, we discuss various AgNPs-based approaches to eradicate bacterial infections and provide comprehensive mechanistic insights and recent advances in antibacterial activity, antibiofilm activity, and cytotoxicity (both in vitro and in vivo) of AgNPs. The mechanistic of antimicrobial activity involves four steps: (i) adhesion of AgNPs to cell wall/membrane and its disruption; (ii) intracellular penetration and damage; (iii) oxidative stress; and (iv) modulation of signal transduction pathways. Numerous factors affecting the bactericidal activity of AgNPs such as shape, size, crystallinity, pH, and surface coating/charge have also been described in detail. The review also sheds light on antimicrobial photodynamic therapy and the role of AgNPs versus Ag⁺ ions release in bactericidal activities. In addition, different methods of synthesis of AgNPs have been discussed in brief.

Strong Antimicrobial Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Obtained by the Green Synthesis in Viridibacillus sp. Extracts

Recently, green silver nanoparticles (G-AgNPs) have gained much attention in medical science due to their extraordinary effects against multidrug-resistant microorganisms. The strong antimicrobial nature of G-AgNPs corresponds to their unique physicochemical properties such as size, shape, surface charge, and active surface groups available to interact with the pathogens. The current study demonstrates a simple, environmentally friendly, and economical method to produce G-AgNPs from an environmental isolate of Viridibacillus sp. The produced G-AgNPs were characterized by various analytical methods, including UV-Vis spectroscopy, single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The reduction of Ag⁺ to Ag° was observed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, which demonstrated the formation of stable G-AgNPs with a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) band at the maximum of 430 nm. TEM analysis demonstrated that the G-AgNPs were spherical with a 5–30 nm size range. The produced G-AgNPs were stable for more than 1 year in an aqueous solution at 4°C. Importantly, G-AgNPs showed remarkable antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative pathogens- E. coli and P. aeruginosa with MIC values of 0.1 and 4 μg/mL and MBC values of 1 and 8 μg/mL, respectively. This level of antimicrobial activity is superior to other AgNPs reported in the literature.

Characterization, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity properties of novel biomediated nanosized-silver by Egyptian Streptomyces roseolus for safe antimicrobial applications

Multi-drug resistant bacteria are not effectively managed with current treatments, making it a serious global problem. Therefore, there is an essential need for finding new antimicrobial agents. In this regard, silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) have been projected as a new generation of antimicrobial agents. Ag-NPs were biomediated by Egyptian Streptomyces roseolus for the first time, which was molecularly identified using 16S rRNA sequencing under accession no. MT071505. Biosynthesized Ag-NPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, TEM, FTIR, and DLS. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of different bioactive functional groups, such as N-H, C-H, C-O-C, C-NH2, and C=O acting as bioreducing/stabilizing agents for Ag-NPs. Ag-NPs exhibited antimicrobial activity against some multi-drug resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. MBC of Ag-NPs against Listeria monocytogenes and Klebsiella pneumonia were 0.195 and 0.048 mg/mL, respectively, with a tolerance level of 2 confirming its biocidal effect. SEM imaging of Ag-NPs-treated L. monocytogenes and K. pneumonia showed shrunk destroyed cells after 6 h of treatment. Biosynthesized Ag-NPs exhibited IC50 of < 0.3 and 8.21 mg/mL, on normal Human Skin Fibroblast, and Blood Lymphocytes, respectively. IC50 values were significantly higher than its MBC values, with no harmful cytotoxic effect, thus can be safely applied at its biocidal concentration. For biosafety purposes, the genotoxicity of biosynthesized Ag-NPs was assessed using Comet assay for the first time on Blood Lymphocytes, with zero-tail and 100% head intensity indicating non-genotoxic effect. An ecofriendly biomediated synthesis of Ag-NPs was described with easy scale-up, non-toxic by-products, so, it can be recommended as a powerful-safe antimicrobial agent.

Synthesis approach-dependent antiviral properties of silver nanoparticles and nanocomposites

Numerous viral infections are common among humans, and some can lead to death. Even though conventional antiviral agents are beneficial in eliminating viral infections, they may lead to side effects or physiological toxicity. Silver nanoparticles and nanocomposites have been demonstrated to possess inhibitory properties against several pathogenic microbes, including archaea, bacteria, fungi, algae, and viruses. Its pronounced antimicrobial activity against various microbe-mediated diseases potentiates its use in combating viral infections. Notably, the appropriated selection of the synthesis method to fabricate silver nanoparticles is a major factor for consideration as it directly impacts antiviral efficacy, level of toxicity, scalability, and environmental sustainability. Thus, this article presents and discusses various synthesis approaches to produce silver nanoparticles and nanocomposites, providing technological insights into selecting approaches to generate antiviral silver-based nanoparticles. The antiviral mechanism of various formulations of silver nanoparticles and the evaluation of its propensity to combat specific viral infections as a potential antiviral agent are also discussed.

Rowan Berries: A Potential Source for Green Synthesis of Extremely Monodisperse Gold and Silver Nanoparticles and Their Antimicrobial Property

Rowanberries (Sorbus aucuparia) are omnipresent in Europe. The medicinal importance of rowanberries is widely known and corresponds to the active ingredients present in the fruits, mainly polyphenols, carotenoids, and organic acids. In the current study, we explored rowanberries for the reduction of gold and silver salts into nanoparticles. Rowanberries-mediated gold nanoparticles (RB-AuNPs) formed within 5 s at room temperature, and silver nanoparticles (RB-AgNPs) formed in 20 min at 90 °C. The produced nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), single-particle inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The characterization confirmed that the nanoparticles are highly monodisperse, spherical, stable over long periods, and exhibit a high negative zeta potential values. The produced RB-AuNPs and RB-AgNPs were 90–100 nm and 20–30 nm in size with a thick biological corona layer surrounding them, providing extreme stability but lowering the antimicrobial activity. The antimicrobials study of RB-AgNPs revealed that the nanoparticles have antimicrobial potential with an MBC value of 100 µg/mL against P. aeruginosa and 200 µg/mL against E. coli.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride as a Platform for the Synthesis of Silver Nanoclusters

Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) synthetized by the thermal polycondensation of melamine at 550 °C for 4 h was further exfoliated by heating at 500 °C for 3 h. Silver cations were adsorbed on the exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride (CNE) and then reduced by sodium borohydride forming silver nanoclusters (NCs) with a size of less than 1 nm. The NCs were located on the CNE surface and did not change the CNE properties except for its pore size distribution and thereby specific surface area (SSA). The Ag NCs were able to collect the photoinduced electrons of CNE and thus reduce their recombination with the holes. It was also documented by the increase in the CNE photocatalytic activity in terms of the degradation of antibiotic Ofloxacin. This study demonstrates the ability of CNE to serve as a platform for a simple and fast synthesis of Ag NCs without any stabilizing compounds.

Carbon-Based Coatings in Medical Textiles Surface Functionalisation: An Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the need for antimicrobial surfaces, especially those used in a healthcare environment. Textiles are the most difficult surfaces to modify since their typical use is in direct human body contact and, consequently, some aspects need to be improved, such as wear time and filtration efficiency, antibacterial and anti-viral capacity, or hydrophobicity. To this end, several techniques can be used for the surface modification of tissues, being magnetron sputtering (MS) one of [hose that have been growing in the last years to meet the antimicrobial objective. The current state of the art available on textile functionalisation techniques, the improvements obtained by using MS, and the potential of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings on fabrics for medical applications will be discussed in this review in order to contribute to a higher knowledge of functionalized textiles themes.

Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles: What We Know and What Do We Need to Know?

Nanobiotechnology is considered to be one of the fastest emerging fields. It is still a relatively new and exciting area of research with considerable potential for development. Among the inorganic nanomaterials, biogenically synthesized silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs) have been frequently used due to their unique physicochemical properties that result not only from their shape and size but also from surface coatings of natural origin. These properties determine antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and many more activities of bio-AgNPs. This review provides the current state of knowledge on the methods and mechanisms of biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles as well as their potential applications in different fields such as medicine, food, agriculture, and industries.

Genotoxicity of physical silver nanoparticles, produced by the HVAD method, for Chinchilla lanigera genome

Each year, growing demand for silver nanoparticles (AgNP) contributes to the search for alternative methods of their production. Stable AgNP with antibacterial properties, low toxicity to the environment and living organisms are especially valued. In the study presented here, an attempt was made to assess the toxicity of two AgNP solutions produced using the HVAD method to the Chinchilla lanigera genome. The AgNO₃ solution was the indicator and reference for the harmfulness of AgNP. The study was carried out in vitro on bone marrow cells isolated from Chinchilla lanigera bones. The genotoxicity was assessed by comet assay, following the treatment of cells with three silver solutions: unstable and sodium citrate-stabilized silver nanoparticles, as well as silver nitrate at three concentrations (5, 10 and 20 µg/L), after 3, 6 and 24 h. Based on the percentage of the DNA content in the comet tail and the tail moment, an increase in cell DNA integrity disruption was demonstrated in all tested variants: of solution, exposure time and concentration, compared to the control sample. A statistically significant correlation was determined between the level of induced DNA breaks and the concentration of the active solutions and the duration of their activity. A solution of silver nanoparticles stabilized with sodium citrate was shown to have the most harmful effect on bone marrow cells. Silver nitrate demonstrated a level of toxicity similar to these particles. Further studies are necessary to directly compare the genotoxic properties of AgNP produced using the HVAD method and the chemical method under the same conditions.

Improving the Antimicrobial and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resins via Nanomodification: An Overview

The main purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview on the preparation of multifunctional epoxies, with improved antimicrobial activity and enhanced mechanical properties through nanomodification. In the first section, we focus on the approaches to achieve antimicrobial activity, as well as on the methods used to evaluate their efficacy against bacteria and fungi. Relevant application examples are also discussed, with particular reference to antifouling and anticorrosion coatings for marine environments, dental applications, antimicrobial fibers and fabrics, and others. Subsequently, we discuss the mechanical behaviors of nanomodified epoxies with improved antimicrobial properties, analyzing the typical damage mechanisms leading to the significant toughening effect of nanomodification. Some examples of mechanical properties of nanomodified polymers are provided. Eventually, the possibility of achieving, at the same time, antimicrobial and mechanical improvement capabilities by nanomodification with nanoclay is discussed, with reference to both nanomodified epoxies and glass/epoxy composite laminates. According to the literature, a nanomodified epoxy can successfully exhibit antibacterial properties, while increasing its fracture toughness, even though its tensile strength may decrease. As for laminates-obtaining antibacterial properties is not followed by improved interlaminar properties.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Diospyros malabarica Fruit Extract and Assessments of Their Antimicrobial, Anticancer and Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP)

The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has currently been gaining wide applications in the medical field of nanomedicine. Green synthesis is one of the most effective procedures for the production of AgNPs. The Diospyros malabarica tree grown throughout India has been reported to have antioxidant and various therapeutic applications. In the context of this, we have investigated the fruit of Diospyros malabarica for the potential of forming AgNPs and analyzed its antibacterial and anticancer activity. We have developed a rapid, single-step, cost-effective and eco-friendly method for the synthesis of AgNPs using Diospyros malabarica aqueous fruit extract at room temperature. The AgNPs began to form just after the reaction was initiated. The formation and characterization of AgNPs were confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, XRD, FTIR, DLS, Zeta potential, FESEM, EDX, TEM and photoluminescence (PL) methods. The average size of AgNPs, in accordance with TEM results, was found to be 17.4 nm. The antibacterial activity of the silver nanoparticles against pathogenic microorganism strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was confirmed by the well diffusion method and was found to inhibit the growth of the bacteria with an average zone of inhibition size of (8.4 ± 0.3 mm and 12.1 ± 0.5 mm) and (6.1 ± 0.7 mm and 13.1 ± 0.5 mm) at 500 and 1000 µg/mL concentrations of AgNPs, respectively. The anticancer effect of the AgNPs was confirmed by MTT assay using the U87-MG (human primary glioblastoma) cell line. The IC50 value was found to be 58.63 ± 5.74 μg/mL. The results showed that green synthesized AgNPs exhibited significant antimicrobial and anticancer potency. In addition, nitrophenols, which are regarded as priority pollutants by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), can also be catalytically reduced to less toxic aminophenols by utilizing synthesized AgNPs. As a model reaction, AgNPs are employed as a catalyst in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, which is an intermediate for numerous analgesics and antipyretic drugs. Thus, the study is expected to help immensely in the pharmaceutical industries in developing antimicrobial drugs and/or as an anticancer drug, as well as in the cosmetic and food industries.

Biodirected Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Aqueous Honey Solutions and Evaluation of Their Antifungal Activity against Pathogenic Candida Spp

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using aqueous honey solutions with a concentration of 2%, 10%, and 20%-AgNPs-H2, AgNPs-H10, and AgNPs-H20. The reaction was conducted at 35 °C and 70 °C. Additionally, nanoparticles obtained with the citrate method (AgNPs-C), while amphotericin B (AmB) and fluconazole were used as controls. The presence and physicochemical properties of AgNPs was affirmed by analyzing the sample with ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The 20% honey solution caused an inhibition of the synthesis of nanoparticles at 35 °C. The antifungal activity of the AgNPs was evaluated using opportunistic human fungal pathogens Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis. The antifungal effect was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and disc diffusion assay. The highest activity in the MIC tests was observed in the AgNPs-H2 variant. AgNPs-H10 and AgNPs-H20 showed no activity or even stimulated fungal growth. The results of the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion susceptibility test for C. parapsilosis strains indicated stronger antifungal activity of AgNPs-H than fluconazole. The study demonstrated that the antifungal activity of AgNPs is closely related to the concentration of honey used for the synthesis thereof.

Biosynthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Mediated by Entomopathogenic Fungi: Antimicrobial Resistance, Nanopesticides, and Toxicity

Silver nanoparticles are widely used in the biomedical and agri-food fields due to their versatility. The use of biological methods for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles has increased considerably due to their feasibility and high biocompatibility. In general, microorganisms have been widely explored for the production of silver nanoparticles for several applications. The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of entomopathogenic fungi for the biological synthesis of silver nanoparticles, in comparison to the use of other filamentous fungi, and the possibility of using these nanoparticles as antimicrobial agents and for the control of insect pests. In addition, the in vitro methods commonly used to assess the toxicity of these materials are discussed. Several species of filamentous fungi are known to have the ability to form silver nanoparticles, but few studies have been conducted on the potential of entomopathogenic fungi to produce these materials. The investigation of the toxicity of silver nanoparticles is usually carried out in vitro through cytotoxicity/genotoxicity analyses, using well-established methodologies, such as MTT and comet assays, respectively. The use of silver nanoparticles obtained through entomopathogenic fungi against insects is mainly focused on mosquitoes that transmit diseases to humans, with satisfactory results regarding mortality estimates. Entomopathogenic fungi can be employed in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles for potential use in insect control, but there is a need to expand studies on toxicity so to enable their use also in insect control in agriculture.
