Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM There is scarce literature concerning 'children in need' at a European level (including Greece), particularly regarding energy balance-related behaviors (EBRBs) associated with overweight and obesity. This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on the EBRBs associated with overweight and obesity among 'children in need' in Greece and their key determinants. METHODS Inclusion criteria included children (0-18 years) who were 'in need', living with overweight or obesity, residing in Greece, and which included data on EBRBs and their potential determinants. APA PsychInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, as well as grey literature (in Greek/English), were searched (without publication date limitations). Data was extracted using an adapted Joanna Briggs Institute tool. RESULTS Seven studies were identified (n = 141-7,283 participants), highlighting prevalent EBRBs, categorized into groups; nutrition (lower diet quality, poor dietary habits, higher intake of carbohydrates, sugar sweetened beverage consumption, low adherence to the Mediterranean diet pattern, lack of daily breakfast consumption), sleep (low sleep duration), and sedentary behaviors / physical activity (television in children's bedrooms, high screen time, low physical activity, high sedentary time). Key determinants included low parental education, food culture, food preparation by grandmothers, the home environment, parental dietary choices, and lower socioeconomic status, etc. CONCLUSION: This review identified specific EBRBs associated with overweight and obesity affecting children in need in Greece and their determining factors. These findings should guide future research, tailored intervention programs, and public health policies (i.e. the European Child Guarantee Strategy) targeted at this understudied priority population of children in need, in Greece. Abstract
Mediterranean diet (MD) is regarded as one of the healthier dietary patterns which is recommended for athletes. This study aims to investigate the adherence to the Mediterranean diet (AMD) and associated beliefs in a large, diverse sample of competitive adolescent athletes from various sports, including both lean and non-lean sports. Additionally, the study examines factors important regarding intention to AMD within the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). In the study took part 711 adolescents (357 male, aged = 14.93 ± 1.38, and 354 female, aged = 14.85 ± 1.35) athletes. The level of AMD was not a significant different between lean (mean = 4.98, SD = ±3.90) and non-lean (mean = 4.77, SD = ±3.68) sport. According to the sport type the 35% of lean sport athletes demonstrated low AMD, 34.1% moderate adherence and 30.9% a high degree. The non lean athletes demonstrated low AMD in 36.3%, moderate adherence 33% and high degree in 30.7%. The results of the mediation analysis indicated a significant mediation effect of intention in the relationship between TPB variables and MD. Based on the results of the study the type of sport does not play a role in the AMD, which, as in the general population, is low. Also validate the TPB and underscore the significance of targeting individuals' intentions to promote positive dietary behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Encouraging adolescents with overweight/obesity to accurately perceive their weight in the belief that this will improve their lifestyle behaviors (physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), eating behavior (EB)) may be detrimental to their psychological health. This study aimed to investigate associations between weight underestimation and lifestyle behaviors along with psychological health in French adolescents with overweight or obesity. METHOD Baseline data from adolescents who participated in a school-based trial were used. Lifestyle behaviors and psychological health (anxiety, depression, eating disorders, quality of life (QoL)) were self-reported. Weight underestimation was measured by matching objective and perceived weight status. Multilevel models were computed to investigate associations between weight underestimation and lifestyle behaviors and psychological health, by gender. RESULTS Of the 1245 adolescents included (15.3 ± 0.7 years), 15.8% underestimated their objective weight (boys 24.2%; girls 8.2%). Boys with underestimation had higher vigorous PA energy expenditure (β = 372.7 MET-min/week, 95%CI [25.1;720.4]), and lower daily sugar-sweetened beverages and foods consumption (β = - 0.3 points, 95%CI [- 0.7; - 0.0]) than those with accurate perception. Girls with weight underestimation had lower eating disorder (β = - 6.0 points, 95%CI [- 9.6; - 2.5]), anxiety (β = - 7.8 points, 95%CI [- 13.8; - 1.9]), and higher QoL (β = 3.3 points, 95%CI [0.0; 6.5]) scores than girls with accurate perception. CONCLUSION Weight underestimation among adolescents with overweight or obesity was associated with healthier lifestyle behaviors in boys, and better psychological health (eating disorder, anxiety and QoL) in girls. Accurate perception of weight status may not be a relevant lever to improve lifestyle behaviors and psychological health.

Abstract
Breast milk is a unique and highly beneficial source of nutrition for infants. It contains a wide range of nutrients that are specifically tailored to meet the specific needs of a growing infant. On the other hand, obesity is a major health issue that affects people around the world. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between breastfeeding and child BMI and the role of maternal BMI, which may influence this relationship. This study revealed that a longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of overweight children. Additionally, the research found that children born to overweight or obese women had a higher probability of being overweight or obese themselves. Considering that mothers with a higher pre-pregnancy body weight are more likely to have children with a higher BMI, it is important that they receive information about the advantages of breastfeeding for a minimum of 6 months for both themselves and their children. Additionally, they should be offered ongoing support, to encourage them to start breastfeeding and continue with it beyond this period.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to assess the association between nutrition behavior, food intake, being overweight, and obesity among school-aged children and adolescents aged 9 to 17 years. Additionally, it sought to examine how these factors influence being overweight and obese within this population. Methods A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative multistage cluster sample of 4200 Pakistani school-aged children and adolescents aged 9 to 17 years from 62 schools across seven random districts in Punjab province, Pakistan. Underweight (BMI < 5th percentile), overweight (85th ≤ BMI < 95th percentile), and obese (95th percentile ≤ BMI) were defined using the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) 2000 criteria, and a Chi-square test utilized for comparison. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) assessed any correlations, while a linear regression analysis explored the predictive power of Nutrition Behavior/Food Intake factors (independent variables) on body-weight (dependent variable). A logistic regression analysis estimated the simultaneous influence of multiple factors on the dichotomous outcomes, and the 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. The statistical significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results The study was comprised of 4108 Pakistani school children aged 9 to 17 years (mean age = 13.92 years, 59.3% boys) from 62 schools. Among them, the prevalence of being overweight and obese individuals was 19.4% and 10.7%, respectively. Factors such as skipping breakfast (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.53-3.93, p < 0.001), consuming vegetables less than once a week (OR 4.12, 95% CI 3.06-5.55, p < 0.001), consuming soft drinks three or more times a week (OR 4.74, 95% CI 3.73-6.04, p < 0.001), and consuming fast food three or more times a week (OR 10.56, 95% CI 8.16-13.67, p < 0.001) were associated with a higher risk of obesity. Conclusion Being overweight and obese pose significant concerns among school-aged children and adolescents in Pakistan, showing a troubling upward trend. Poor nutrition behaviors, including frequenting fast-food restaurants and low consumption of fruits and vegetables, contribute to these issues. It is imperative to comprehend these risk factors to formulate impactful policies and dietary interventions that target childhood obesity in Pakistan. Identifying vulnerable populations and implementing tailored intervention strategies are essential for public health efforts. While further interventions may be needed to reduce the body mass index (BMI) and manage being overweight and obese, the findings of this study provide valuable insights into addressing these critical health challenges.

Abstract
Adolescent obesity constitutes a disorder with physical and psychosocial implications. Childhood and adolescent obesity rates are constantly increasing worldwide. Since adolescent obesity is a chronic disease, which is part of noncommunicative degenerative diseases, its holistic approach decisively includes the assessment of its impact on quality of life. The use of the tools Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0 (PedsQL4.0) and The Impact of Weight on Quality of Life for Kids (IWQOL-Kids), the familiarity of health professionals with them, their applicability, and relevance in clinical practice, are a cornerstone in the promotion of health services in adolescent obesity. The present randomized qualitative study aimed to highlight the attitudes and preferences of pediatricians on the assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL), among obese adolescents. The sample consists of 120 pediatricians, randomly selected from the totality of municipality-registered pediatricians (Municipality of Thessaloniki, Greece) who were interviewed in a semi-structured way, regarding their attitudes in the assessment of health-related quality of life, as measured by the PedsQL4.0 and IWQOL-Kids tools. The interviews revealed that most participants gained insight into the HRQoL assessment process during the present study interview with the researchers. Only eight (n=8/120) participants were familiar with the explored tools, PedsQL4.0 and IWQOL-KIDS. The remaining sample (n=112/120) was unfamiliar with both the two questionnaires and their content as well. Among the referred barriers to the usage of the tools, lack of time was stated as the pivotal factor hindering the implementation of the tools in clinical practice. There was no consensus on the preferred questionnaire among the participating healthcare professionals. All participants stated that the use of one or both questionnaires would have added significant value to the support and care of adolescents with obesity. Tools assessing HRQoL present low familiarity among pediatricians in real-world data. Focus on the engagement of the healthcare providers in the evaluation of obesity-related quality of life is unequivocal, in order to improve health care status in adolescents with obesity.

Abstract
(1) Background: Unhealthy dietary behaviors are estimated to be one of the leading causes of death globally and are often shaped at a young age. Here, we investigated adolescent diet quality and its predictors, including nutrition knowledge, in two large Central European cohorts. (2) Methods: In 3056 participants of the EVA-Tyrol and EVA4YOU prospective population-based cohort studies aged 14 to 19 years, diet quality was assessed using the AHEI-2010 and DASH scores, and nutrition knowledge was assessed using the questionnaire from Turconi et al. Associations were examined utilizing multivariable linear regression. (3) Results: The mean overall AHEI-2010 score was 42%, and the DASH score was 45%. Female participants (60.6%) had a significantly higher diet quality according to the AHEI-2010 and DASH score. AHEI-2010 and DASH scores were significantly associated (p < 0.001) with sex, school type, smoking, and total daily energy intake. The DASH score was additionally significantly associated (p < 0.001) with age, socioeconomic status, and physical activity. Participants with better nutrition knowledge were more likely to be older, to attend a general high school, to live in a high-income household, to be non-smokers, and to have a higher diet quality according to the AHEI-2010 and DASH score. (4) Conclusions: Predictors of better diet quality included female sex, physical activity, educational level, and nutrition knowledge. These results may aid focused interventions to improve diet quality in adolescents.

Abstract
Maternal weight-status at various time-points may influence child obesity development, however the most critical time-point remains unidentified. We used data from the Healthy Growth Study, a cross-sectional study of 2666 Greek schoolchildren aged 9-13 years, exploring associations between childhood obesity and maternal weight-status at pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy/gestational weight gain, and at the child's pre-adolescence. Logistic regression analyses examined associations between maternal weight-status being "below" or "above" the recommended cut-off points (WHO BMI thresholds or IOM cut-off points), at the three time-points, individually or combined into weight-status trajectory groups to determine the strongest associations with child obesity in pre-adolescence. Adjusted models found significant associations and the highest odds ratios [95% Confidence Intervals] for mothers affected by obesity before pregnancy (4.16 [2.47, 7.02]), those with excessive gestational weight gain during pregnancy (1.50 [1.08, 2.08]), and those affected by obesity at their child's pre-adolescence (3.3 [2.29, 4.87]). When combining these weight-status groups, mothers who were above-above-below (3.24 [1.10, 9.55]), and above-above-above (3.07 [1.95, 4.85]) the healthy weight recommendation-based thresholds in each time-point, had a three-fold higher likelihood of child obesity, compared to the below-below-below trajectory group. Maternal obesity across all examined time-points was significantly associated with childhood obesity. Effective childhood obesity preventive initiatives should commence at pre-conception, targeting maternal weight throughout the life-course and childhood developmental stages.

Abstract
Background Obesity and weight gain have become major problems worldwide. Thus, several forms of alternative intense sweeteners are extensively used, offering a non-caloric sweet taste. To the best of our knowledge, no research has studied either the consumption pattern or the perception of using artificial sweeteners in Saudi Arabia. Objectives Our research aimed to study the usage pattern of such artificial sweeteners in the Tabuk region and estimate the knowledge of and attitudes toward their usage among the population. Methods A cross-sectional study promoted on multiple social media platforms and face-to-face interviews in different malls and hospitals in the Tabuk region. We grouped the participants into two major groups: the users and the non-users of artificial sweeteners. Each group has been subdivided into a healthy subgroup and those with a medical record subgroup. Participants' characteristics and their choice of sweeteners were analyzed using bivariate analysis. The age, gender, and education level of the participants were adjusted using binary logistic regression in order to adjust for potential confounders. Results A total of 2,760 participants were included in our study. We found that more than 59% of the participants that were over 45 years old were non-hospitalized non-hospitalized diseased irrespective of their usage of artificial sweeteners. Furthermore, females, graduates, diabetics were significantly high irrespective of their subgroup. Moreover, Steviana® is the most commonly used artificial sweetener. In addition, healthy participants showed a greater perception of the usage and adverse effects of artificial sweeteners. Furthermore, bivariate analysis using logistic regression revealed significant associations (p < 0.05) with confounders such as gender, age, and education level. Conclusion Educational programs and nutritional advice for the safe consumption and the daily permissible doses of artificial sweeteners are essential and should be directed specifically at females.

Abstract
Alcohol drinking is an important health-related problem and one of the major risk factors for a wide array of non-communicable diseases, while there is a lack of studies investigating environment-specific associations between sports participation and alcohol drinking in adolescence. This study prospectively investigated the relationship between sports factors (i.e., participation in sports and competitive achievement), with the prevalence of harmful alcohol drinking (HD), and HD initiation in 14-to-16 years old adolescents from Bosnia and Herzegovina (n = 641, 337 females, 43% living in rural community). Participants were tested over 4-time points divided by approximately 6 months, from the beginning of high school to the end of the second grade. Variables included gender, factors related to sport participation, a community of residence (urban or rural), and outcome: alcohol consumption was assessed by the AUDIT questionnaire. Results evidenced that the prevalence of HD increased over the study period from 6 to 19%, with no significant differences between urban and rural youth. Logistic regression for HD as criterion evidenced adolescents who participated in sports and then quit as being at particular risk for drinking alcohol at the study baseline. Sports factors were not correlated with HD initiation in the period between 14 and 16 years of age. It seems that the problem of alcohol drinking should be preventively targeted in all youth, irrespective of living environment. Although sports participation was not evidenced as being a factor of influence on HD initiation, results highlight the necessity of developing targeted preventive campaigns against alcohol drinking for adolescents who quit sports.

Abstract
Childhood obesity can affect both physical and mental health. Body-size misperception may lead to a lack of motivation to make healthy changes or to engage in unhealthy weight loss behaviors, increasing the possibility for obese children to become obese adults. To estimate the frequency of body-size misperception among children and adolescents, we conducted a cross-sectional study within another study on eating disorders in youth in Greece (National Institute of Educational Policy, act no. 04/2018). Between January and December 2019, two trained assistants visited 83 primary and secondary schools of the Region of Western Greece and interviewed 3504 children aged 10-16 years (CL 99%) and performed anthropometric measurements. Among the 3504 surveyed children, 1097 were overweight, including 424 obese, and 51 were underweight. The "perceived" BMI was not computed in 875 children (25%), who did not state their weight or height and were classified as non-responders. Weight bias was inversely related to BMI, the obese and overweight non-obese children underestimated their weight, while the underweight children overestimated it. Conversely, height bias was positively related to BMI bias. BMI bias was not related to sex, age, parental education, or place of residence. In conclusion, our study lends robust support to the existing evidence on unrealistic body images among overweight children and adolescents. Prompt recognition of such misperceptions may help in increasing motivation towards healthier eating habits, systematic physical activity, and weight-control interventions.

Abstract
A healthy diet is essential to prevent childhood obesity, however, adherence to a healthy diet is challenging. The aim of this study was to give a comprehensive overview of the literature investigaating associations between food and beverages and overweight/obesity in children and adolescents in order to identify dietary risk factors. A systematic search was performed in four databases and observational studies were included. Meta-analysis was performed using the random effect model. Sixty records met inclusion criteria and 14 different food or beverage categories were identified. A higher intake of sugar-sweetened beverages increased the odds of overweight/obesity by 1.20 (p < 0.05) (n = 26) and higher intake of fast food increased the odds of overweight/obesity by 1.17 (p < 0.05) (n = 24). Furthermore, higher intake of meat (OR 1.02, p < 0.05 (n:7)) and refined grains (OR 1.28, p < 0.05 (n:3)) was associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity. In contrast, higher intake of whole grain (OR 0.86, p = 0.04 (n:5)) and more surprisingly sweet bakery (OR 0.59, p < 0.05 (n:3)) was associated with a decreased risk of overweight/obesity. In conclusion, a higher intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and a higher intake of fast food was identified as the primary dietary risk factors for overweight/obesity. Future research is needed to strengthen the generalizability of these results.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the relationship of body mass index (BMI) with muscle and cardiorespiratory fitness in children living within rural areas (regional unit of West Attica) in Greece. Participants included 399 students (187 boys, 212 girls), ages 8-12 years old, and were evaluated in physical performance tests. The point prevalence of overweight and obesity was 21.39% and 26.20% in boys, and 19.90% and 23.79% in girls. Significant differences were observed in all physical performance tests (handgrip, long jump, shuttle run, trunk flexors, and extensors endurance) between normal weight and obese participants. BMI was positively correlated with handgrip (r = 0.442-0.462, p < 0.001). There was a negative association with long jump (r = -0.206, p < 0.001), 20 m shuttle run (r = -0.394, p < 0.001), trunk flexors (r = -0.403, p < 0.001) and trunk extensors endurance (r = -0.280, p < 0.001). The regression analysis showed that 20-30% of the overall variation for physical performance assessments could be accounted for by BMI, age, and sex. With the exception of the long jump and the endurance of the trunk extensors, BMI alone may explain more than 10% of the outcome of most tests. This study highlights the determinant of BMI on muscle and cardiorespiratory fitness. The management of obesity should begin early in childhood to prevent adult chronic cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
