Three-Dimensional Imaging of Bioinspired Lipidic Mesophases Using Multicolored Light-Emitting Carbon Nanodots

Recent progress in the design of carbon nanostructures exhibiting strong multiphoton-excited emission opens new pathways to explore the self-organization of lipids found in living organisms. Phospholipid-based lyotropic myelin figures (MFs) are promising materials as simplified models of biomembranes due to their structural resemblance to a multilamellar sheath insulating the axon. This study demonstrates the possibility of selective labeling of MFs by strongly emitting multicolor phloroglucinol-derived carbon nanodots (PG CNDs). Such dopants are efficiently excited by visible and near-infrared light; therefore, one- and two-photon fluorescence microscopies are incorporated to gain 3D insights into the MFs. Combining nondestructive fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy techniques along with polarized light microscopy gives details on the stability and morphology of lipidic mesophases. Our findings suggest that PG CNDs can be a viable and simple alternative to conventional fluorescent lipid stains to image biologically relevant phospholipid-based structures.

Pluronic P123/DMSO Lyotropic Liquid Crystal for Incorporating Bioactive Substances for Topical Application

Lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) have attracted considerably growing interest in drug delivery applications over the last years. The structure of LLC matrices is complementary to cell membranes and provides an efficient, controlled, and selective release of drugs. In this work, a complex of experimental methods was used to characterize binary LLCs Pluronic P123/DMSO and triple LLC systems Pluronic P123/DMSO/Ibuprofen, which are interesting as transdermal drug delivery systems. Liquid crystalline, thermal, and rheological properties of LLCs were studied. Concentration and temperature areas of the lyomesophase existence were found, and phase transition enthalpies were evaluated. Intermolecular interactions among the components were studied by infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In vitro studies of Ibuprofen (Ibu) release from various LLCs allow differentiation of its release depending on the polymer content. Atomic force microscopy and contact angle methods were used to characterize the surface morphology of the hydrophobic membrane, which was used as a stratum corneum model, and also evaluate the adhesion work of the LLCs. A complex analysis of the results provided by these experimental methods allowed revealing correlations between the phase behavior and rheological characteristics of the LLCs and release kinetics of ibuprofen. The proposed biocompatible systems have considerable potential for a transdermal delivery of bioactive substances.

Liquid Crystal Networks Meet Water: It's Complicated!

Soft robots are composed of compliant materials that facilitate high degrees of freedom, shape-change adaptability, and safer interaction with humans. An attractive choice of material for soft robotics is crosslinked networks of liquid crystal polymers (LCNs), as they are responsive to a wide variety of external stimuli and capable of undergoing fast, programmable, complex shape morphing, which allows for their use in a wide range of soft robotic applications. However, unlike hydrogels, another popular material in soft robotics, LCNs have limited applicability in flooded or aquatic environments. This can be attributed not only to the poor efficiency of common LCN actuation methods underwater but also to the complicated relationship between LCNs and water. In this review, the relationship between water and LCNs is elaborated and the existing body of literature is surveyed where LCNs, both hygroscopic and non-hygroscopic, are utilized in aquatic soft robotic applications. Then the challenges LCNs face in widespread adaptation to aquatic soft robotic applications are discussed and, finally, possible paths forward for their successful use in aquatic environments are envisaged.

Phase Behavior and Rheological Properties of Size-Fractionated MXene (Ti3C2Tx) Dispersions

Understanding the dispersion behavior of MXenes is interesting from a fundamental colloid science perspective and critical to enabling the fluid-phase manufacturing of MXene devices with controlled microstructures and properties. However, the polydispersity, irregular shape, and charged surfaces of MXenes result in a complex phase behavior that is difficult to predict through theoretical calculations. As two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, MXenes can form lyotropic liquid crystal phases, gels, and aggregates. This work aims to elucidate the effects of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) sheet size on their phase behavior and associated rheological properties. Aqueous dispersions of large sheets with an average lateral dimension of 3.0 μm, small sheets with an average lateral dimension of 0.3 μm, and a bimodal mixture of the two sizes were investigated by using cross-polarized optical microscopy and rheology. At low concentrations, the large MXene dispersions exhibited lyotropic liquid crystal behavior and extended aligned textures, but increasing concentration resulted in the formation of dense flocs. Dispersions of small sheets formed small birefringent domains with increasing concentration but lacked long-range ordering. A bimodal mixture of these sizes enabled the formation of liquid crystalline phases with extended aligned textures with less floc formation. These results provide insights into using polydispersity to tune dispersion microstructure and rheological properties that can be applied to designing dispersions for fluid-phase manufacturing methods, such as direct ink writing.

Geometric method to determine planar anchoring strength for chromonics

Chromonic nematics are lyotropic liquid crystals that have already been known for half a century, but have only recently raised interest for their potential applications in life sciences. Determining elastic constants and anchoring strengths for rigid substrates has thus become a priority in the characterization of these materials. Here we present a method to determine chromonics' planar anchoring strength. We call it geometric as it is based on recognition and fitting of the stable equilibrium shapes of droplets surrounded by the isotropic phase in a thin cell with plates enforcing parallel alignments of the nematic director. We apply our method to shapes observed in experiments; they resemble elongated rods with round ends, which are called bâtonnets. Our theory also predicts other droplets' equilibrium shapes, which are either slender and round, called discoids, or slender and pointed, called tactoids. In particular, sufficiently small droplets are expected to display shape bistability, with two equilibrium shapes, one tactoid and one discoid, exchanging roles as stable and metastable shapes upon varying their common area.

Spatio-temporal programming of lyotropic phase transition in nanoporous microfluidic confinements

HYPOTHESIS

The nanoporous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces of a rectangular microfluidic channel, selectively uptakes water molecules, concentrating the solute molecules in an aqueous phase, that could drive phase transitions. Factors such as surface wettability, channel geometry, the surface-to-volume ratio, and surface topography of the confinements could play a key role in tuning the phase transitions spatio-temporally.

EXPERIMENTS

Using a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal as model biological material, confined within nanoporous microfluidic environments, we study molecular assembly driven by nanoporous substrates. By combining timelapse polarized imaging, quantitative image processing, and a simple mathematical model, we analyze the phase transitions and construct a master diagram capturing the role of surface wettability, channel geometry and embedded topography on programmable lyotropic phase transitions.

FINDINGS

Intrinsic PDMS nanoporosity and confinement cross-section, together with the imposed wettability regulate the rate of the N-M phase transition; whereas the microfluidic geometry and embedded topography enable phase transition at targeted locations. We harness the emergent long-range order during N-M transition to actuate elasto-advective transport of embedded micro-cargo, demonstrating particle manipulation concepts governed by tunable phase transitions. Our results present a programmable physical route to material assembly in microfluidic environment, and offer a new paradigm for assembling genetic components, biological cargo, and minimal synthetic cells.

Paradigm of lyotropic liquid crystals in tissue regeneration

The liquid crystalline phase has attracted tremendous attention from researchers across the globe due to its intriguing properties. In this article, we enumerate the different classes of liquid crystals. Lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) exhibit their liquid crystalline nature based on the surrounding solvent media, which opens novel horizons in drug delivery and tissue regeneration. The advantages of LLCs in the said fields and the thermodynamic mechanistic insights responsible for their structural stabilization have been conveyed. Various fabrication and characterization techniques, along with factors influencing the formation of LLCs, have been discussed. Applications in novel therapeutic avenues like bone extracellular matrix, cardiac remodeling, wound management, and implants have been unveiled. Also, regulatory considerations, patent, and clinical portfolios to circumvent the hurdles of clinical translation have been discussed. LLCs could be a promising approach in diverse avenues of tissue regeneration.

Phase Equilibria and Critical Behavior in Nematogenic MBBA-Isooctane Monotectic-Type Mixtures

The transition from the isotropic (I) liquid to the nematic-type (N) uniaxial phase appearing as the consequence of the elongated geometry of elements seems to be a universal phenomenon for many types of suspensions, from solid nano-rods to biological particles based colloids. Rod-like thermotropic nematogenic liquid crystalline (LC) compounds and their mixtures with a molecular solvent (Sol) can be a significant reference for this category, enabling insights into universal features. The report presents studies in 4'-methoxybenzylidene-4-n-butylaniline (MBBA) and isooctane (Sol) mixtures, for which the monotectic-type phase diagram was found. There are two biphasic regions (i) for the low (TP1, isotropic liquid-nematic coexistence), and (ii) high (TP2, liquid-liquid coexistence) concentrations of isooctane. For both domains, biphasic coexistence curves' have been discussed and parameterized. For TP2 it is related to the order parameter and diameter tests. Notable is the anomalous mean-field type behavior near the critical consolute temperature. Regarding the isotropic liquid phase, critical opalescence has been detected above both biphasic regions. For TP2 it starts ca. 20 K above the critical consolute temperature. The nature of pretransitional fluctuations in the isotropic liquid phase was tested via nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE) measurements. It is classic (mean-field) above TP1 and non-classic above the TP2 domain. The long-standing problem regarding the non-critical background effect was solved to reach this result.

Biophysical Properties of Bifunctional Phage-Biosensor

Biosensor research is a swiftly growing field for developing rapid and precise analytical devices for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and industrial use and beyond. Herein, we propose a phage-based biosensor method to develop a sensitive and specific system for biomedical detection. Our method is based on in vitro selected phages and their interaction with the targeted analytes as well as on optical properties that change according to the concentration of the model analyte. The green fluorescent protein (GFP) was chosen as our model analyte as it has its own well-known optical properties. Brilliant green was used as a reporter component for the sensor. Its presence enables a color intensity (absorbance) change when the analyte is present in the solution. Furthermore, the reporter dye functioned as a quencher for an additional lanthanide label in our assay. It mediated the specific phage-derived interference in the signal measured with the time-resolved luminescence. Most importantly, our results confirmed that the presented bifunctional phage with its liquid crystal properties enabled the measurement of GFP in a concentration-dependent, quantitative manner with a limit of detection of 0.24 µg/mL. In the future, our novel method to develop phage-based biosensors may provide highly sensitive and specific biosensors for biomedical or otherwise-relevant targets.

Liquid Crystalline Systems from Nature and Interaction of Living Organisms with Liquid Crystals

Biomaterials, which are substances interacting with biological systems, have been extensively explored to understand living organisms and obtain scientific inspiration (such as biomimetics). However, many aspects of biomaterials have yet to be fully understood. Because liquid crystalline phases are ubiquitously found in biomaterials (e.g., cholesterol, amphiphile, DNA, cellulose, bacteria), therefore, a wide range of research has made attempts to approach unresolved issues with the concept of liquid crystals (LCs). This review presents these studies that address the interactive correlation between biomaterials and LCs. Specifically, intrinsic LC behavior of various biomaterials such as DNA, cellulose nanocrystals, and bacteriaare first introduced. Second, the dynamics of bacteria in LC media are addressed, with focus on how bacteria interact with LCs, and how dynamics of bacteria can be controlled by exploiting the characteristics of LCs. Lastly, how the strong correlation between LCs and biomaterials has been leveraged to design a new class of biosensors with additional functionalities (e.g., self-regulated drug release) that are not available in previous systems is reviewed. Examples addressed in this review convey the message that the intersection between biomaterials and LCs offers deep insights into fundamental understanding of biomaterials, and provides resources for development of transformative technologies.

Paradoxes for chromonic liquid crystal droplets

Chromonic liquid crystals constitute a novel lyotropic phase, whose elastic properties have so far been modeled within the classical Oseen-Frank theory, provided that the twist constant is assumed to be considerably smaller than the saddle-splay constant, in violation of one Ericksen inequality. This paper shows that paradoxical consequences follow from such a violation for droplets of these materials surrounded by an isotropic fluid. For example, tactoids with a degenerate planar anchoring simply disintegrate indefinitely in myriads of smaller ones.

Tailoring the multi-functional properties of phospholipids for simple to complex self-assemblies

The unique interfacial properties, huge diversity, and biocompatible nature of phospholipids make them an attractive pharmaceutical excipient. The amphiphilic nature of these molecules offers them the property to self-assemble into distinct structures. The solubility, chemical and structural properties, surface charge, and critical packing parameters of phospholipids play an essential role during formulation design. This review focuses on the relationship between the structural features of a phospholipid molecule and the formation of different lipid-based nanocarrier drug delivery systems. This provides a rationale and guideline for the selection of appropriate phospholipids while designing a drug delivery system. Finally, we refer to relevant recent case studies covering different types of phospholipid-based systems including simple to complex assemblies. Different carriers in the size range of 50 nm to a few microns can be prepared using phospholipids. The carriers can be delivered through oral, intravenous, nasal, dermal, transmucosal, and subcutaneous routes. A wide range of applicability can be achieved by incorporating various hydrophilic and lipophilic additives in the phospholipid bilayer. Advanced research has led to the discovery of phospholipid complexes and cell membrane mimicking lipids. Overall, phospholipids remain a versatile pharmaceutical excipient for drug delivery. They play multiple roles as solubilizer, emulsifier, surfactant, permeation enhancer, coating agent, release modifier, and liposome former.

Liquid crystal-templated chiral nanomaterials: from chiral plasmonics to circularly polarized luminescence

Chiral nanomaterials with intrinsic chirality or spatial asymmetry at the nanoscale are currently in the limelight of both fundamental research and diverse important technological applications due to their unprecedented physicochemical characteristics such as intense light-matter interactions, enhanced circular dichroism, and strong circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art advances in liquid crystal-templated chiral nanomaterials. The chiroptical properties of chiral nanomaterials are touched, and their fundamental design principles and bottom-up synthesis strategies are discussed. Different chiral functional nanomaterials based on liquid-crystalline soft templates, including chiral plasmonic nanomaterials and chiral luminescent nanomaterials, are systematically introduced, and their underlying mechanisms, properties, and potential applications are emphasized. This review concludes with a perspective on the emerging applications, challenges, and future opportunities of such fascinating chiral nanomaterials. This review can not only deepen our understanding of the fundamentals of soft-matter chirality, but also shine light on the development of advanced chiral functional nanomaterials toward their versatile applications in optics, biology, catalysis, electronics, and beyond.

Advanced Functional Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals have been intensively studied as functional materials. Recently, integration of various disciplines has led to new directions in the design of functional liquid-crystalline materials in the fields of energy, water, photonics, actuation, sensing, and biotechnology. Here, recent advances in functional liquid crystals based on polymers, supramolecular complexes, gels, colloids, and inorganic-based hybrids are reviewed, from design strategies to functionalization of these materials and interfaces. New insights into liquid crystals provided by significant progress in advanced measurements and computational simulations, which enhance new design and functionalization of liquid-crystalline materials, are also discussed.

Recent advances in versatile inverse lyotropic liquid crystals

Owing to the rapid and significant progress in advanced materials and life sciences, nanotechnology is increasingly gaining in popularity. Among numerous bio-mimicking carriers, inverse lyotropic liquid crystals are known for their unique properties. These carriers make accommodation of molecules with varied characteristics achievable due to their complicated topologies. Besides, versatile symmetries of inverse LCNPs (lyotropic crystalline nanoparticles) and their aggregating bulk phases allow them to be applied in a wide range of fields including drug delivery, food, cosmetics, material sciences etc. In this review, in-depth summary, discussion and outlook for inverse lyotropic liquid crystals are provided.

Emerging Developments on Nanocellulose as Liquid Crystals: A Biomimetic Approach

Biomimetics is the field of obtaining ideas from nature that can be applied in science, engineering, and medicine. The usefulness of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and their excellent characteristics in biomimetic applications are exciting and promising areas of present and future research. CNCs are bio-based nanostructured material that can be isolated from several natural biomasses. The CNCs are one-dimensional with a high aspect ratio. They possess high crystalline order and high chirality when they are allowed to assemble in concentrated dispersions. Recent studies have demonstrated that CNCs possess remarkable optical and chemical properties that can be used to fabricate liquid crystals. Research is present in the early stage to develop CNC-based solvent-free liquid crystals that behave like both crystalline solids and liquids and exhibit the phenomenon of birefringence in anisotropic media. All these characteristics are beneficial for several biomimetic applications. Moreover, the films of CNC show the property of iridescent colors, making it suitable for photonic applications in various devices, such as electro-optical devices and flat panel displays.

Vertical Alignment of Liquid Crystal on Sustainable 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenoxymethyl-Substituted Polystyrene Films

We synthesized sustainable 2,4-di-tert-butylphenoxymethyl-substituted polystyrenes (PDtBP#, # = 88, 68, 35, and 19, where # is molar percent contents of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenoxymethyl moiety), using post-polymerization modification reactions in order to study their liquid crystal (LC) alignment behaviors. In general, LC cells fabricated using polymer film with higher molar content of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenoxymethyl side groups showed vertical LC alignment behavior. LC alignment behavior in LC cell was related to the surface energy of the polymer alignment layer. For example, when the total surface energy value of the polymer layer was smaller than about 29.4 mJ/m², vertical alignment behaviors were observed, generated by the nonpolar 2,4-di-tert-butylphenoxymethyl moiety with long and bulky carbon groups. Orientation stability was observed at 200 °C in the LC cells fabricated using PDtBP88 as the LC alignment layer. Therefore, as a natural compound modified polymer, PDtBP# can be used as a candidate LC alignment layer for environmentally friendly applications.

Synthesis and Liquid Crystalline Properties of Low Molecular Weight Bis-Chalcone Compounds

AIMS

In this paper, we report on the synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of some low molecular weight bis-chalcone compounds derived from acetone, cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone mesogenic cores.

BACKGROUND

Structurally bis-chalcones belong to a broader family of chalcone compounds. Chalcone is a compound that consists of two aromatic rings linked by an unsaturated α, β-ketone.

OBJECTIVE

Liquid crystalline chalcones are prepared by aliphatic chain substituents on two aromatic rings. Chalcones are well studied for their mesomorphic properties. Compared to a large number of chalcone based LCs reported, only a few articles have been published on the mesomorphic properties of bis-chalcone compounds. The target compounds of the present study varied not only in their central core but also in number and position of terminal aliphatic chain substitution-a key structural unit in deciding the liquid crystalline properties of a compound.

METHOD

All target compounds were synthesized in good yield by base catalyzed Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction. Molecular structures were confirmed by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass spectroscopic methods. Liquid crystalline property of these compounds was evaluated using polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry.

RESULTS

Although none of the acetone based compounds exhibited mesomorphism, cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone based compounds with octyloxy chain at para position on either side of the dibenzylidine ring stabilized liquid crystalline smectic (SmA and SmC) and nematic (N) phases. The observed structure-liquid crystalline property relationship was explained by structural analysis of molecules using DFT calculations. Considering the inherent photoluminescence nature of the chalcone moiety, a preliminary study was carried out on a selected compound to reveal its fluorescence property.

CONCLUSION

Our study brings about an important structure-liquid crystalline property relationship in a relatively unexplored class of bis-chalcone liquid crystals.

Shape bistability in 2D chromonic droplets

An extensive experimental study of the shapes of two-dimensional bipolar droplets of the chromonic nematic phase of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) sandwiched between glass plates, by Kimet alwas published in (2013J. Phys.: Condens. Matter25404202). The paper includes a mathematical model of this system. We have extended this study by further theoretical modelling. Our results are in good, quantitative agreement with the experimental data. The model has produced what promises to be a more accurate estimate for the isotropic surface tension at the nematic/isotropic solution interface-and predicts a regime of shape bistability (which has not yet been observed) for larger droplets, where tactoids (pointed, zeppelin-shaped droplets) and smooth-edged discoids can coexist in equilibrium. The general method presented in this paper is also applied to the tactoids formed by F-actin filaments in solution, for which an estimate is given for the value of the isotropic surface tension at the nematic/isotropic interface.

The Influence of Hydrophobic Blocks of PEO-Containing Copolymers on Glyceryl Monooleate Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery

The investigation of properties of amphiphilic block copolymers as stabilizers for non-lamellar lyotropic liquid crystalline nanoparticles represents a fundamental issue for the formation, stability and upgraded functionality of these nanosystems. The aim of this work is to use amphiphilic block copolymers, not studied before, as stabilizers of glyceryl monooleate 1-(cis-9-octadecenoyl)-rac-glycerol (GMO) colloidal dispersions. Nanosystems were prepared with the use of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(lactic acid) (PEO-b-PLA) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(5-methyl-5-ethyloxycarbonyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one) (PEO-b-PMEC) block copolymers. Different GMO:polymer molar ratios lead to formulation of nanoparticles with different size and internal organization, depending on the type of hydrophobic block. Resveratrol was loaded into the nanosystems as a model hydrophobic drug. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of the prepared nanosystems were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The studies allowed the description of the lyotropic liquid crystalline nanoparticles and evaluation of impact of copolymer composition on these nanosystems. The structures formed in GMO:block copolymer colloidal dispersions were compared with those discussed previously. The investigations broaden the toolbox of polymeric stabilizers for the development of this type of hybrid polymer/lipid nanostructures.

Quality by design (QbD) in the formulation and optimization of liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LCNPs): A risk based industrial approach

The intersection of lipid-based nanoparticles and lyotropic liquid crystals has provided a novel type of nanocarrier system known as 'lipid-based lyotropic liquid crystals' or 'liquid crystalline nanoparticles' (LCNPs). The unique advantages and immense popularity of LCNPs can be exploited in a better way if the formulation of LCNPs is done using the approach of quality by design (QbD). QbD is a systematic method that can be utilized in formulation development. When QbD is applied to LCNPs formulation, it will proffer many unique advantages, such as better product and process understanding, the flexibility of process within the design space, implementation of more effective and efficient control strategies, easy transfer from bench to bedside, and more robust product. In this work, the application of QbD in the formulation of LCNPs has been explored. The elements of QbD, viz. quality target product profile, critical quality attributes, critical material attributes, critical process parameters, quality risk management, design of experiments, and control strategy for the development of LCNPs have been explained in-depth with case studies. The present work will help the reader to understand the nitty-gritties in the application of QbD in the formulation of LCNPs, and provide a base for QbD-driven formulation of LCNPs with a regulatory perspective.

Doping Liquid Crystals of Colloidal Inorganic Nanotubes by Additive-Free Metal Nanoparticles

Doping liquid-crystal phases with nanoparticles is a fast-growing field with potential breakthroughs due to the combination of the properties brought by the two components. One of the main challenges remains the long-term stability of the hybrid system, requiring complex functionalization of the nanoparticles at the expense of their self-assembly properties. Here we demonstrate the successful synthesis of additive-free noble-metal nanoparticles at the surface of charged inorganic nanotubes. Transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy confirm the stabilization of metallic nanoparticles on nanotubes. Meanwhile, the spontaneous formation of liquid-crystals phases induced by the nanotubes is observed, even after surface modification with metallic nanoparticles. Small-angle X-ray scattering experiments reveal that the average interparticle distance in the resulting hybrids can be easily modulated by controlling electrostatic interactions. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method for the preparation of homogeneous transparent hybrid films with a high degree of alignment.

From n-layer planar ordering to the monolayer homeotropic structure of confined hard rods: The effect of shape anisotropy and wall-to-wall separation

Using the Parsons-Lee theory, we examined the effect of shape anisotropy and the wall-to-wall separation (H) on the phase behavior of the hard parallelepiped rods with dimensions L, D, and D (L>D) in such narrow slitlike pores which only one homeotropic layer can form. The phase structures, including biaxiality, planar nematic layering transition as well as planar to homeotropic, were studied for some separations in the range 2.5D≤H≤10.0D for H-D≤L<H.

Conventional and unconventional ionic phenomena in tunable soft materials made of liquid crystals and nanoparticles

A great variety of tunable multifunctional materials can be produced by combining nanoparticles and liquid crystals. Typically, the tunability of such soft nanocomposites is achieved via external electric fields resulting in the field-induced reorientation of liquid crystals. This reorientation can be altered by ions normally present in liquid crystals in small quantities. In addition, nanomaterials dispersed in liquid crystals can also affect the behavior of ions. Therefore, an understanding of ionic phenomena in liquid crystals doped with nanoparticles is essential for future advances in liquid crystal-aided nanoscience and nanotechnology. This paper provides an overview of the ionic effects observed in liquid crystals doped with nanomaterials. An introduction to liquid crystals is followed by a brief overview of nanomaterials in liquid crystals. After giving a basic description of ions in liquid crystals and experimental methods to measure them, a wide range of ionic phenomena in liquid crystals doped with different types of nanomaterials is discussed. After that, both existing and emerging applications of tunable soft materials made of liquid crystals and nanodopants are presented with an emphasis on the role of ionic effects in such systems. Finally, the discussion of unsolved problems and future research directions completes the review.

Morphology of Lyotropic Myelin Figures Stained with a Fluorescent Dye

Lyotropic myelin figures (MFs), i.e., long cylindrical structures formed by certain surfactants, owe their name to their resemblance to the biological membrane that covers nerve fibers. Herein, we used a strong bilayer-forming zwitterionic phospholipid stained by the Nile Red dye to study lamellar mesophases. Polarized optical microscopy and fluorescence confocal microscopy allowed us to investigate the morphology of myelin structures and determine the orientational order of amphiphilic molecules. The cross-sectional views reveal significant differences in the configurations of MFs within the liquid crystalline cell, as well as the details of a spontaneous and stimulated formation of branched lipid tubes. Our results provide insights into small-scale morphology and out-of-equilibrium structural changes in the multilamellar structures.
