Abstract
Thyroid cancer rates have risen globally over the past four decades, with Puerto Rico experiencing a particularly pronounced increase. This may be linked to higher metal exposure, as some metals are endocrine disruptors and carcinogens. Currently, certain regions of Puerto Rico have Superfund programs because of high concentrations of metals in the soil. Therefore, we investigated the association between thyroid cancer incidence and three metals (lead, cadmium, and mercury) with known endocrine-disrupting properties and increased levels in soil samples in Puerto Rico. We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data for heavy metal levels and the thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) as a thyroid cancer marker. Additionally, we performed an ecological study using data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report on Metals from Natural and Anthropogenic Sources in Puerto Rico Soils and data from the Puerto Rico Central Cancer Registry on age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rates from 2015 to 2019. Through NHANES analysis, we found a significant negative association between mercury and TgAb. Through our ecological study, we observed higher thyroid cancer incidence rates and increased metal levels in the soil in the northern parts of Puerto Rico. Our heterogenous results necessitate further research on this topic.

Abstract
As the most common endocrine cancer, thyroid cancer (TC) has sharply increased globally over the past three decades. The growing incidence of TC might be counted by genetics, radiation, iodine, autoimmune disease, and exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), being typical EDCs, have been widely utilized in plastics, electronics, furniture, and textiles as flame retardants since the 1980s, and research has indicated a significant correlation between their exposure and the risk of TC. Even so, PBDEs exposure impact on the metabolic signature for TC remains unexplored. In this study, eight congeners of PBDEs were determined in serum from 111 patents with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and 111 healthy participants based on case-control epidemiology using gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-APCI-MS/MS). Based on the tertile distribution of total PBDEs concentrations in 59 participants, metabolomics analysis was further performed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to hybrid quadrupole-Orbitrap MS. In the partial correlation analysis, the 29 identified metabolites were correlated with PBDEs exposure (P < 0.05). In addition, PBDEs disrupted the metabolism of glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, taurine, and hypotaurine, indicating that neurotransmitters, oxidative stress, and inflammation are the vulnerable pathways affected in PTC. Furthermore, (±)-octopamine and 5-hydroxyindole, both of which modulate the actions of neurotransmitters, emerged as potential disturbed metabolite markers for TC following exposure to PBDEs. This study analyzed the impact of PBDEs on PTC in terms of the metabolic changes and further explored possible biomarkers, which helped us have a deep understanding of the possible mechanism of the effects of PBDEs on TC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The global incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased in the last decades. While improvements in diagnosis may contribute, overdiagnosis is also a possibility. This review focuses on the epidemiology, risk factors, and immune microenvironment associated with differentiated TC (DTC). AREAS COVERED A search was conducted in Scielo, Scopus, and EMBASE databases, involving 72 articles. TC is the most common endocrine neoplasm, with DTC form being predominant. Its incidence has globally risen, particularly among women aged over 45. Endogenous risk factors for DTC include genetic disorders, race, age, female gender, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Environmental risks involve ionizing radiation, whether through therapeutic treatment or environmental contamination from nuclear accidents, iodine deficiency, endocrine disruptors, residence in volcanic areas, environmental pollution, and stress. The use of anti-obesity medications remains controversial. The tumor's immune microenvironment is the histological space where tumor cells interact with host cells, crucial for understanding aggressiveness. Immunotherapy emerges as a promising intervention. EXPERT OPINION Recent advances in DTC management offer transformative potential, requiring collaborative efforts for implementation. Emerging areas like precision medicine, molecular profiling, and immunotherapy present exciting prospects for future exploration, shaping the next era of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in thyroid cancer research.

Abstract
Introduction Air pollution is speculated to increase the risk of Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Nevertheless, the results remain inconsistent and inconclusive. This study aimed to explore the association between ambient air pollution (AAP) and COVID-19 risks using a meta-analysis with meta-regression modelling. Methods The inclusion criteria were: original studies quantifying the association using effect sizes and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs); time-series, cohort, ecological or case-crossover peer-reviewed studies in English. Exclusion criteria encompassed non-original studies, animal studies, and data with common errors. PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Google Scholar electronic databases were systemically searched for eligible literature, up to 31, March 2023. The risk of bias (ROB) was assessed following the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality parameters. A random-effects model was used to calculate pooled risk ratios (RRs) and their 95 % CIs. Results A total of 58 studies, between 2020 and 2023, met the inclusion criteria. The global representation was skewed, with major contributions from the USA (24.1 %) and China (22.4 %). The distribution included studies on short-term (43.1 %) and long-term (56.9 %) air pollution exposure. Ecological studies constituted 51.7 %, time-series-27.6 %, cohorts-17.2 %, and case crossover-3.4 %. ROB assessment showed low (86.2 %) and moderate (13.8 %) risk. The COVID-19 incidences increased with a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 [RR = 4.9045; 95 % CI (4.1548-5.7895)], PM10 [RR = 2.9427: (2.2290-3.8850)], NO2 [RR = 3.2750: (3.1420-3.4136)], SO2 [RR = 3.3400: (2.7931-3.9940)], CO [RR = 2.6244: (2.5208-2.7322)] and O3 [RR = 2.4008: (2.1859-2.6368)] concentrations. A 10 μg/m3 increase in concentrations of PM2.5 [RR = 3.0418: (2.7344-3.3838)], PM10 [RR = 2.6202: (2.1602-3.1781)], NO2 [RR = 3.2226: (2.1411-4.8504)], CO [RR = 1.8021 (0.8045-4.0370)] and O3 [RR = 2.3270 (1.5906-3.4045)] was significantly associated with COVID-19 mortality. Stratified analysis showed that study design, exposure period, and country influenced exposure-response associations. Meta-regression model indicated significant predictors for air pollution-COVID-19 incidence associations. Conclusion The study, while robust, lacks causality demonstration and focuses only on the USA and China, limiting its generalizability. Regardless, the study provides a strong evidence base for air pollution-COVID-19-risks associations, offering valuable insights for intervention measures for COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer incidence has increased globally in recent decades, especially in females, although its trends in Taiwan have not been studied extensively. This study aimed to investigate changes in female incidence and possible causes of thyroid cancer in Taiwan. METHODS Using the Taiwan Cancer Registry (TCR) Database, age-standardized incidence rates, age-specific incidence rates and birth cohorts were calculated. Correlation between female thyroid cancer incidence and cohort fertility rates were examined. RESULTS Thyroid cancer incidence increased in Taiwanese female, with age-adjusted rates per 100,000 people increasing from 7.37 during 1995-1999 to 20.53 during 2015-2019; the annual percentage change (APC) was 5.9% (95% CI, 5.3-6.5). Age-specific incidence rates increased with age, with peak rates occurring at younger ages. The APCs in the 50-54 age group were the highest (6.8%, 95% CI, 6.1-7.5). Incidence rates also increased with later birth cohorts. We observed a significant negative correlation between thyroid cancer incidence and fertility rates in the same birth cohort. CONCLUSIONS We hypothesize that overdiagnosis may be a main reason for the rapidly increasing thyroid cancer incidence in Taiwanese females. Notably, we observed a strong negative correlation between fertility and thyroid cancer incidence. However, our study is limited by the absence of individual-level cancer data in the TCR database. These associations with fertility will be an important subject for future thyroid cancer research.

Abstract
Background We aimed to explore the burden of thyroid cancer worldwide from 1990 to 2019 and to project its future trends from 2020 to 2030. Methods Based on annual data on thyroid cancer cases from 1990 to 2019 available in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, we calculated the age-standardised incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates for thyroid cancer. We used the estimated annual percentage change (EPAC) to quantify the temporal trends in these age-standardised rates from 1990 to 2019 and applied generalised additive models to project the disease burden from 2020 to 2030. Results The global age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) of thyroid cancer increased from 1990 to 2019, with a higher overall disease burden in women than in men at both study time points. The male-to-female ratios for the ASIR increased from 0.41 in 1990 to 0.51 in 2019, while the ratio for the age-standardised death rate (ASDR) increased from 0.60 to 0.82. The models predicted the United Arab Emirates would have the fastest rising trend in both the ASIR (estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) = 4.19) and age-standardised DALY rate (EAPC = 4.36) in 2020-30, while Saint Kitts and Nevis will have the fastest rising trend in the ASDR (EAPC = 2.29). Meanwhile, the growth trends for the ASDR and age-standardised DALY rate are projected to increase across countries in this period. A correlation analysis of the global burden of thyroid cancer between 1990-2019 and 2020-30 showed a significant positive correlation between the increase in the ASIR and socio-demographic index (SDI) in low-SDI and low-middle-SDI countries. Conclusions The global burden of thyroid cancer is increasing, especially in the female population and in low-middle-SDI regions, underscoring a need to target them for effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Abstract
Artificial chemical products are widely used and ubiquitous worldwide and pose a threat to the environment and human health. Accumulating epidemiological and toxicological evidence has elucidated the contributions of environmental chemical contaminants to the incidence and development of chronic diseases that have a negative impact on quality of life or may be life-threatening. However, the pathways of exposure to these chemicals and their involvements in chronic diseases remain unclear. We comprehensively reviewed the research progress on the exposure risks of humans to environmental contaminants, their body burden as indicated by blood monitoring, and the correlation of blood chemical contaminants with chronic diseases. After entering the human body through various routes of exposure, environmental contaminants are transported to target organs through blood circulation. The application of the modern analytical techniques based on human plasma or serum specimens is promising for determining the body burden of environmental contaminants, including legacy persistent organic pollutants, emerging pollutants, and inorganic elements. Furthermore, their body burden, as indicated by blood monitoring correlates with the incidence and development of metabolic syndromes, cancers, chronic nervous system diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and reproductive disorders. On this basis, we highlight the urgent need for further research on environmental pollution causing health problems in humans.

Abstract
Human exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occurs globally through contaminated food, dust, and drinking water. Studies of PFAS and thyroid cancer have been limited. We conducted a nested case-control study of prediagnostic serum levels of 19 PFAS and papillary thyroid cancer (400 cases, 400 controls) in the Finnish Maternity Cohort (pregnancies 1986-2010; follow-up through 2016), individually matched on sample year and age. We used conditional logistic regression to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for log2 transformed and categorical exposures, overall and stratified by calendar period, birth cohort, and median age at diagnosis. We adjusted for other PFAS with Spearman correlation rho = 0.3-0.6. Seven PFAS, including perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), N-ethyl-perfluorooctane sulfonamidoacetic acid (EtFOSAA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) were detected in >50% of women. These PFAS were not associated with risk of thyroid cancer, except for PFHxS, which was inversely associated (OR log2 = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.70-0.97). We observed suggestive but imprecise increased risks associated with PFOA, PFOS, and EtFOSAA for those diagnosed at ages <40 years, whereas associations were null or inverse among those diagnosed at 40+ years (P-interaction: .02, .08, .13, respectively). There was little evidence of other interactions. These results show no clear association between PFAS and papillary thyroid cancer risk. Future work would benefit from evaluation of these relationships among those with higher exposure levels and during periods of early development when the thyroid gland may be more susceptible to environmental harms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) may link to thyroid nodule risk, but studies of mixed-SVOCs exposure effects are lacking. Traditional analytical methods are inadequate for dealing with mixed exposures, while machine learning (ML) seems to be a good way to fill the gaps in the field of environmental epidemiology research. OBJECTIVES Different ML algorithms were used to explore the relationship between mixed-SVOCs exposure and thyroid nodule. METHODS A 1:1:1 age- and gender-matched case-control study was conducted in which 96 serum SVOCs were measured in 50 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), 50 nodular goiters (NG), and 50 controls. Different ML techniques such as Random Forest, AdaBoost were selected based on their predictive power, and variables were selected based on their weights in the models. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to assess the mixed effects of the SVOCs exposure on thyroid nodule. RESULTS Forty-three of 96 SVOCs with detection rate >80 % were included in the analysis. ML algorithms showed a consistent selection of SVOCs associated with thyroid nodule. Fluazifop-butyl and fenpropathrin are positively associated with PTC and NG in single compound models (all P < 0.05). WQS model shows that exposure to mixed-SVOCs was associated with an increased risk of PTC and NG, with the mixture dominated by fenpropathrin, followed by fluazifop-butyl and propham. In the BKMR model, mixtures showed a significant positive association with thyroid nodule risk at high exposure levels, and fluazifop-butyl showed positive effects associated with PTC and NG. CONCLUSION This study confirms the feasibility of ML methods for variable selection in high-dimensional complex data and showed that mixed exposure to SVOCs was associated with increased risk of PTC and NG. The observed association was primarily driven by fluazifop-butyl and fenpropathrin. The findings warranted further investigation.

Abstract
Worldwide, disorders of the thyroid gland are a growing concern; such can be caused by exposure to contaminants, including agrochemicals used in conventional agriculture, which act as endocrine disruptors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether or not exposure to an environment with conventional agriculture leads to thyroid disruption. Mus musculus were used as bioindicator species, captured in two sites: a farm where conventional agriculture is practiced, and a place without agriculture. Thyroid histomorphometric and morphologic data were analyzed. The impacts of the agricultural environment over the thyroid were revealed, as indications of hypothyroidism were observed in exposed mice: the area and volume of epithelial cells were much lower. Alterations in thyroid histomorphology were also observed: lower follicular sphericity, irregularly delimited epithelium and increased exfoliation into the colloid. These results highlight the need for transition from current conventional agricultural systems towards organic systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ubiquitin-specific peptidase 10 (USP10) has been found to have oncogenic activity in several human tumors. This study first revealed the exact function of USP10 on the progression of thyroid cancer (THCA) by researching its effect on the ferroptosis. METHODS USP10 expression in THCA patients was analyzed by online data analysis and in 75 THCA cases was scrutinized by real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot. Influence of USP10 on the viability, colony formation, migration and invasion of THCA cells was demonstrated by cell counting kit-8, colony formation, wound healing and Transwell invasion assays. Effect of USP10 on the Erastin-induced ferroptosis in THCA cells was evaluated by detecting the ferroptosis-related indicators. Intrinsic mechanism of USP10, glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) in regulating THCA progression was identified. In vivo xenograft experiment was implemented. RESULTS USP10 was abundantly expressed in THCA patients, linking to poor outcome. USP10 overexpression enhanced the viability, colony formation, migration and invasion of THCA cells. USP10 mitigated the Erastin-induced ferroptosis in THCA cells, decreased the levels of iron, Fe2+ , malondialdehyde, lipid reactive oxygen species, reduced mitochondrial superoxide level, and increased mitochondrial membrane potential. USP10 facilitated the expression of ferroptosis suppressor GPX4 by elevating SIRT6. Loss of USP10 repressed the in vivo growth of THCA cells. CONCLUSION USP10 might attenuate the ferroptosis to promote thyroid cancer malignancy by facilitating GPX4 via elevating SIRT6. It might be novel target for the treatment of THCA.

Abstract
While Human Papillomavirus (HPV) particles have been detected in a small proportion of benign thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer cases, a role of HPV in these thyroid conditions has not been established. This study aims to investigate the association of HPV infection with thyroid cancer (TC) using a nationwide population-based study. We retrieved data for this case-control study from Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010. The study sample included 3062 patients with TC and 9186 propensity-scored matched controls. We employed multivariate logistic regression models to quantitatively evaluate the association of TC with HPV infections after taking age, sex, monthly income, geographic location and urbanization level of the patient's residence, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia into considerations. Chi-squared test revealed that there was a significant difference in the prevalence of prior HPV infections between patients with TC and controls (15.3% vs. 7.6%, p < 0.001). The adjusted odds ratio of prior HPV infections for patients with TC was 2.199 (95% CI = 1.939-2.492) relative to controls. The adjusted ORs of prior HPV infections for patients with TC was similar for males and females. Our research suggests a significant link between HPV infection and the development of TC.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance presents us with a potential global crisis as it undermines the abilities of conventional antibiotics to combat pathogenic microbes. The history of antimicrobial agents is replete with examples of scaffolds containing halogens. In this review, we discuss the impacts of halogen atoms in various antibiotic types and antimicrobial scaffolds and their modes of action, structure-activity relationships, and the contributions of halogen atoms in antimicrobial activity and drug resistance. Other halogenated molecules, including carbohydrates, peptides, lipids, and polymeric complexes, are also reviewed, and the effects of halogenated scaffolds on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and factors affecting antimicrobial and antivirulence activities are presented. Furthermore, the potential of halogenation to circumvent antimicrobial resistance and rejuvenate impotent antibiotics is addressed. This review provides an overview of the significance of halogenation, the abilities of halogens to interact in biomolecular settings and enhance pharmacological properties, and their potential therapeutic usages in preventing a postantibiotic era. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Antimicrobial resistance and the increasing impotence of antibiotics are critical threats to global health. The roles and importance of halogen atoms in antimicrobial drug scaffolds have been established, but comparatively little is known of their pharmacological impacts on drug resistance and antivirulence activities. This review is the first to extensively evaluate the roles of halogen atoms in various antibiotic classes and pharmacological scaffolds and to provide an overview of their ability to overcome antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract
PURPOSE Overall, thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. This cancer is fifth most common cancer among adult women and the second most common cancer in women over 50 years old and it occurs in women 3 times more than men. The present systematic review and meta-analysis were designed with the aim of determining the 5-year survival rate of thyroid cancer in Asian countries in 2022. METHODS The current study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of thyroid cancer survival rates in Asian countries. Researchers in the study searched for articles published in six international databases: PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, Google Scholar, ISI (Web of Knowledge), and ProQuest until July 03, 2022. A checklist (The Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Form) has been prepared in previous studies to evaluate the quality of articles. RESULTS In general, 38 articles were entered for the meta-analysis. The 5-year survival rate was 95.3%, with a 95% confidence interval of 93.5% to 96.6%. The year of study is a cause of variability in results of 5-year (Reg Coef = 0.145, P < 0.001). According to the results, an increased survival rate across the study period was observed. Human Development Index was a cause of variability in results of 5-year survival rates (Reg Coef = 12.420, P < 0.001). The results of Table 2 showed that women have 4% more 5-year survival rate than men (Hazard ratio: 1.05 CI: 95% 1.04-1.06)). CONCLUSION In general, the 5-year survival of thyroid cancer in Asian countries was higher than in European countries, but it is at a lower level than in the United States.

Abstract
Lung cancer (LC) is the second-most prevalent tumor worldwide. According to the most recent GLOBOCAN data, over 2.2 million LC cases were reported in 2020, with an estimated new death incident of 1,796,144 lung cancer cases. Genetic, lifestyle, and environmental exposure play an important role as risk factors for LC. E-cigarette, or vaping, products (EVPs) use has been dramatically increasing world-wide. There is growing concern that EVPs consumption may increase the risk of LC because EVPs contain several proven carcinogenic compounds. However, the relationship between EVPs and LC is not well established. E-cigarette contains nicotine derivatives (e.g., nitrosnornicotine, nitrosamine ketone), heavy metals (including organometal compounds), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and flavorings (aldehydes and complex organics). Several environmental toxicants have been proven to contribute to LC. Proven and plausible environmental carcinogens could be physical (ionizing and non-ionizing radiation), chemicals (such as asbestos, formaldehyde, and dioxins), and heavy metals (such as cobalt, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and nickel). Air pollution, especially particulate matter (PM) emitted from vehicles and industrial exhausts, is linked with LC. Although extensive environmental exposure prevention policies and smoking reduction strategies have been adopted globally, the dangers remain. Combined, both EVPs and toxic environmental exposures may demonstrate significant synergistic oncogenicity. This review aims to analyze the current publications on the importance of the relationship between EVPs consumption and environmental toxicants in the pathogenesis of LC.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common endocrine malignancy. Environmental risk factors such as presence of pollutants in air as well as the combustion of fossil fuels or carbon as a cooking habit in closed environments inside houses affect thyroid hormonal homeostasis and diseases. This study aimed to estimate the association between environmental risk factors and the incidence of thyroid cancer worldwide from 1990 to 2019 including particulate pollutants coming from fossil fuels employed in closed environments. Data on the incidence of thyroid cancer and some environmental risk factors were extracted from the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the correlation between the thyroid cancer incidence and environmental risk factors. Finally, a generalized additive model was fitted for modeling. R 3.5.0 was used for analysis of the data. The most relevant results showed that the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of thyroid cancer has a positive and significant correlation with environmental air pollution by O3 (r=0.63, P value<0.001), by particulate matter pollution (r=0.23, P value<0.001), and by household PM2.5 air pollution (r=0.52, P value≤0.001). In contrast, the correlation between ASIR and high temperature (T>25.6°C) (r=-0.27, P value<0.001) is negative and significant. The modeling results showed that particulate matter pollution and O3 pollution and household PM2.5 air pollution which originated from solid fuels are risk factors for thyroid cancer. Therefore, more research in this field is necessary in areas with high levels of air pollution at the national and international levels.

Abstract
Previous studies have implicated SNHG3, a long non-coding RNA, in various human cancers, suggesting its oncogenic role. However, its specific involvement in thyroid cancer and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the role of SNHG3 in human thyroid cancer and its interaction with the miR-339-5p/GPR62 axis. Understanding these mechanisms could provide insights into potential therapeutic targets for managing thyroid cancer. Results revealed significant upregulation of SNHG3 in human thyroid cancer tissues and cell lines. Knockdown of SNHG3 significantly suppressed proliferation, migration and invasion of CUTC5 and IHH-4 thyroid cancer cells. Knockdown of SNHG3 induces apoptosis in CUTC5 and IHH-4 cells and also inhibits the growth of xenografted tumors in vivo. Different in vitro assays revealed the interaction of SNHG3 with microRNA-339-5p (miR-339-5p) in thyroid cancer cells. Expression of miR-339-5p was significantly downregulated in thyroid cancer tissues and cell lines. However, the knockdown of SNHG3 caused significant upregulation of miR-339-5p. Interestingly, overexpression of miR-339-5p exerted tumor-suppressive effects in CUTC5 and IHH-4 cells via post-transcriptional suppression of GPR62. Knockdown of GPR62 significantly inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of CUTC5 and IHH-4 cells. Nonetheless, inhibition of miR-339-5p or overexpression of GPR62 avoids the growth inhibitory effects of SNHG3 knockdown in CUTC5 and IHH-4 cells. Results indicated that SNHG3 exerts oncogenic molecular function in thyroid cancer via miR-339-5p/GPR62 axis and may act as a therapeutic target for its management.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the ABO/Rh blood group distributions and their relationship with clinical-pathological features in papillary thyroid cancer patients. It was planned as a retrospective case-controlled study. The blood group distributions of the patients were contrasted with that of the general population. Additionally, the association between clinical-pathological variables and blood group distribution was assessed. Two hundred and ninety-three patients were involved in the study. The median age was 48 years, and the majority of patients were female (84.3%). The most common variants of papillary thyroid cancer were follicular, classical, and oncocytic. The majority of the patients had stage 1 (91.1%) disease at the time of diagnosis. ABO blood group distributions in the patient (47.4% A, 11.9% B, 8.2% AB, 32.4% O) and control (42% A, 16% B, 8% AB, 34% O) groups were found to be similar ( P = .8). In terms of Rh factor, there was a comparable distribution for the characteristics of the patient and healthy control group ( P = .6). There was no association between clinical and pathological variables and blood group distributions (gender, age, tumor stage, tumor location, and pathological tumor variant). Comparing patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma to the healthy control group, the prevalence of the A blood group numerically increased while the prevalence of the B blood group numerically decreased, but it was not statistically significant. In addition, ABO/Rh blood type and clinical and pathological variables did not relate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer is a very damaging disease. The most common treatment for this disease includes thyroidectomy and then using radioactive iodine (RAI). RAI has many side effects, including a decrease in salivary secretions, followed by dry mouth and oral and dental injuries, as well as increased inflammation and oxidative stress. Selenium can be effective in these patients by improving inflammation and oxidative stress and by modulating salivary secretions. So far, only one clinical trial has investigated the effect of selenium on thyroid cancer patients treated with radioiodine therapy (RIT) conducted on 16 patients; considering the importance of this issue, to show the potential efficacy of selenium in these patients, more high-quality trials with a larger sample size are warranted. METHODS This is a parallel double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial that includes 60 patients aged 20 to 65 years with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) treated with RAI and will be conducted in Seyyed al-Shohada Center, an academic center for referral of patients to receive iodine, Isfahan, Iran. Thirty patients will receive 200 µg of selenium for 10 days (3 days before to 6 days after RAI treatment) and another 30 patients will receive a placebo for the same period. Sonographic findings of major salivary glands, salivary secretions, and sense of taste will be evaluated before and 6 months after 10-day supplementation. DISCUSSION Due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as well as improving salivary secretions, selenium may improve the symptoms of thyroid cancer treated with radioactive iodine. In past studies, selenium consumption has not reduced the therapeutic effects of radiation therapy, and at a dose of 300 to 500 μg/day, it has not had any significant side effects in many types of cancer under radiation therapy. Abstract
Diabetes is a complex condition, and the causes are still not fully understood. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to air pollution could be linked to an increased risk of diabetes. Specifically, exposure to certain pollutants, such as particulate Matter and Ozone, has been associated with higher rates of diabetes. At the same time, air pollution has also been linked to an increased risk of thyroid cancer. While there is less evidence linking air pollution to thyroid cancer than to diabetes, it is clear that air pollution could have severe implications for thyroid health. Air pollution could increase the risk of diabetes and thyroid cancer through several mechanisms. For example, air pollution could increase inflammation in the body, which is linked to an increased risk of diabetes and thyroid cancer. Air pollution could also increase oxidative stress, which is linked to an increased risk of diabetes and thyroid cancer. Additionally, air pollution could increase the risk of diabetes and thyroid cancer by affecting the endocrine system. This review explores the link between diabetes and air pollution on thyroid cancer. We will discuss the evidence for an association between air pollution exposure and diabetes and thyroid cancer, as well as the potential implications of air pollution for thyroid health. Given the connections between diabetes, air pollution, and thyroid cancer, it is essential to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of developing the condition.

Abstract
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a growing public health concern worldwide. Consumption of foodstuffs is currently thought to be one of the principal exposure routes to EDCs. However, alternative ways of human exposure are through inhalation of chemicals and dermal contact. These compounds in food products such as canned food, bottled water, dairy products, fish, meat, egg, and vegetables are a ubiquitous concern to the general population. Therefore, understanding EDCs' properties, such as origin, exposure, toxicological impact, and legal aspects are vital to control their release to the environment and food. The present paper provides an overview of the EDCs and their possible disrupting impact on the endocrine system and other organs.

Abstract
Anthropogenic microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous pollutants found in aquatic, food, soil and air environments. Recently, drinking water for human consumption has been considered a significant pathway for ingestion of such plastic pollutants. Most of the analytical methods developed for detection and identification of MPs have been established for particles with sizes > 10 μm, but new analytical approaches are required to identify NPs below 1 μm. This review aims to evaluate the most recent information on the release of MPs and NPs in water sources intended for human consumption, specifically tap water and commercial bottled water. The potential effects on human health of dermal exposure, inhalation, and ingestion of these particles were examined. Emerging technologies used to remove MPs and/or NPs from drinking water sources and their advantages and limitations were also assessed. The main findings showed that the MPs with sizes > 10 μm were completely removed from drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). The smallest NP identified using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Pyr-GC/MS) had a diameter of 58 nm. Contamination with MPs/NPs can occur during the distribution of tap water to consumers, as well as when opening and closing screw caps of bottled water or when using recycled plastic or glass bottles for drinking water. In conclusion, this comprehensive study emphasizes the importance of a unified approach to detect MPs and NPs in drinking water, as well as raising the awareness of regulators, policymakers and the public about the impact of these pollutants, which pose a human health risk.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer is considered as one of the most prevalent cancers in the world. Some pesticides can play a role as a potentially important risk factor in thyroid cancer by affecting thyroid morphology and thyroid hormone homeostasis. The aim of present study was to systematically review the available epidemiological evidence for human exposure to pesticides and thyroid cancer. Articles were searched in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science by suitable keywords from January 2000 to May 2021. Standard techniques for systematic reviews were followed in the current study and results reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, finally seven studies including four cohort studies and three case-control studies were reviewed. Organochlorines (OCPs) in more cases, Organophosphates (OPs) and Carbamates insecticides, herbicides and fungicides were the studied pesticides. Inconsistent results were reported in the surveyed articles on the OCPs. Two articles on the Carbamates (Carbaryl and Mancozeb) showed consistently an inverse association between exposure and thyroid cancer. Increased risk of thyroid cancer due to the exposure to the Malathion was reported in one article on the OPs. Due to the limited current knowledge about the effect of pesticides on thyroid cancer in humans, human health policies must be implemented to control individual's exposure to chemicals through using of botanical pesticides in agricultural. Also, more studies must be done to fill this gap of knowledge.

Abstract
PURPOSE Environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a mixture of chemical compounds capable to interfere with endocrine axis at different levels and to which population is daily exposed. This paper aims to review the relationship between EDCs and breast, prostate, testicle, ovary, and thyroid cancer, discussing carcinogenic activity of known EDCs, while evaluating the impact on public health. METHODS A literature review regarding EDCs and cancer was carried out with particular interest on meta-analysis and human studies. RESULTS The definition of EDCs has been changed through years, and currently there are no common criteria to test new chemicals to clarify their possible carcinogenic activity. Moreover, it is difficult to assess the full impact of human exposure to EDCs because adverse effects develop latently and manifest at different ages, even if preclinical and clinical evidence suggest that developing fetus and neonates are most vulnerable to endocrine disruption. CONCLUSION EDCs represent a major environmental and health issue that has a role in cancer development. There are currently some EDCs that can be considered as carcinogenic, like dioxin and cadmium for breast and thyroid cancer; arsenic, asbestos, and dioxin for prostate cancer; and organochlorines/organohalogens for testicular cancer. New evidence supports the role of other EDCs as possible carcinogenic and pregnant women should avoid risk area and exposure. The relationship between EDCs and cancer supports the need for effective prevention policies increasing public awareness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited data exists suggesting that cumulative exposure to air pollution in the form of fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm [PM2.5]) may be associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), although this relationship has not been widely established. This study aims to evaluate the association between PM2.5 and PTC and determine the subgroups of patients who are at the highest risk of PTC diagnosis. METHODS Under IRB approval, we conducted a case-control study of adult patients (age ≥ 18) newly diagnosed with PTC between 1/2013-12/2016 across a single health care system were identified using electronic medical records. These patients were compared to a control group of patients without any evidence of thyroid disease. Cumulative PM2.5 exposure was calculated for each patient using a deep learning neural networks model, which incorporated meteorological and satellite-based measurements at the patients' residential zip code. Adjusted multivariate logistic regression was used to quantify the association between cumulative PM2.5 exposure and PTC diagnosis. We tested whether this association differed by gender, race, BMI, smoking history, current alcohol use, and median household income. RESULTS A cohort of 1990 patients with PTC and a control group of 6919 patients without thyroid disease were identified. Compared to the control group, patients with PTC were more likely to be older (51.2 vs. 48.8 years), female (75.5% vs 46.8%), White (75.2% vs. 61.6%), and never smokers (71.1% vs. 58.4%) (p < 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, race, BMI, current alcohol use, median household income, current smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, COPD, and asthma, 3-year cumulative PM2.5 exposure was associated with a 1.41-fold increased odds of PTC diagnosis (95%CI: 1.23-1.62). This association varied by median household income (p-interaction =0.03). Compared to those with a median annual household income <$50,000, patients with a median annual household income between $50,000 and < $100,000 had a 43% increased risk of PTC diagnosis (aOR = 1.43, 95%CI: 1.19-1.72), and patients with median household income ≥$100,000 had a 77% increased risk of PTC diagnosis (aOR = 1.77, 95%CI: 1.37-2.29). CONCLUSIONS Cumulative exposure to PM2.5 over 3 years was significantly associated with the diagnosis of PTC. This association was most pronounced in those with a high median household income, suggesting a difference in access to care among socioeconomic groups.

Abstract
Endosulfan, an organochlorine pesticide, has been understudied in the literature on thyroid cancer. The aim of this ecological study was to assess the correlation between endosulfan exposure and thyroid cancer incidence rates (IRs) in the United States (US). Age-adjusted thyroid cancer IRs per 100,000 people per state for the years 1999 to 2019 were obtained from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To assess the state-level use of endosulfan, data were obtained from the US Geological Survey (USGS). Endosulfan usage estimates (kilograms/acres cropland; quintiles) and thyroid cancer IRs were mapped together. The correlation between age-adjusted thyroid cancer IRs and statewide endosulfan use was calculated using the Spearman correlation. Overall endosulfan usage in the US trended downwards between 1992 and 2007 (T = -0.77; P < 0.001), while thyroid cancer IR trended upwards between 1999 and 2019 (T = 0.69; P < 0.001). There was a statistically significant correlation between 1992 endosulfan use and 2012 (r = 0.32; P = 0.03) and 2014 (r = 0.32; P = 0.03) thyroid cancer IRs. Although restrictions on endosulfan use seem effective, the potential impact of endosulfan exposure remains due to the persistent, semi-volatile, bioaccumulative, and biomagnifying properties of endosulfan metabolites in particular, indicating the need for future thyroid research of highly exposed populations.

Abstract
The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC), especially papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), has dramatically increased globally. Whereas some endocrine disruptors have been linked to neoplastic processes, the associations between human exposure to bisphenol analogs and the risk of TC remain unclear. This present case-control study examined the associations between the urinary concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols, namely bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS), and the risk of PTC. After adjusting for confounders and creatinine standardization, significantly positive associations were observed for BPF (odds ratio [OR] = 1.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.27-2.54), but negative associations observed for BPA (OR = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.19-0.77) and BPS (OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.43-0.93), in the total population. However, after stratification by age and smoking, statistical significance was retained only in non-smoking women, suggesting the adverse effects of BPF exposure on PTC risk, especially in women. These findings require replication and confirmation in further research.

Abstract
Risk assessment of heavy metals is critical in controlling and preventing risks of foodborne diseases. Fish can be used as bioindicators for exposure to potential toxic elements (PTEs), which can represent potential risks for humans. The long Iranian coastline and three major fishery regions in the country, including the northern (Caspian Sea) and southern (Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman) seas as well as inland waters and aquacultures (rivers, dams, wetlands and fish farms) have made Iran a large producer of fish. In the first step of the present study, data collection and report of PTEs in fish from the three fishery regions (2010-2022) were carried out. In the second step, health risks were assessed using Monte Carlo simulation in child and adult consumers. The average concentrations of Cd, Hg and Pb for the northern sea, southern sea, and inland waters and aquacultures were 0.273, 0.249, 1.077; 0.430, 0.423, 1.182; and 1.387, 0.232, 1.703 μg/g per dry weight, respectively. Based on the target hazard quotient results, Hg intake of Iranian children from all the three fishery regions was more than 1, which was alarming. In the adult age group, southern sea fish consumers were at risk of Hg adverse health effects. Moreover, Cd included the highest carcinogenic risk of toxic elements in fish from the three fishery regions of Iran. Estimation of THQ, HI, ILCR and EDI revealed that consumption of fish might induce health complexities for the consumers in Iran. Moreover, Iranians from northern and southern regions of the country consumed further seafood due to the availability of high seafood sources in these regions. Hence, various indices must be used for the risk assessment of general human health. Due to the high risks of carcinogenicity/non-carcinogenicity estimated in the risk assessment, consumption of fish by infants and pregnant women must critically be assessed.

Abstract
Irrigation water contaminated with industrial waste could pollute the soil and vegetables with heavy metals. The objective of this study was to analyze the concentration of heavy metals in soil and vegetables after irrigation practices with wastewater emanating from industrial parks. 24 samples were collected from 8 sampling stations for vegetable, soil and water samples separately, following APHA procedures. Samples were collected using a composite sampling method in May and June 2021. Water samples were collected using clean polyethylene plastic bottles while soil and vegetables were sampled using clean plastic bags. Analysis was done for heavy metal concentrations such as Pb, Cr, Cd, and Zn for each sample using descriptive statistics of changes in concentrations, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Principal Component Analysis and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The mean concentration of heavy metals in soil, vegetables, and water samples was analyzed. Unlike the rest of the heavy metal concentrations, the result showed the highest levels for Zn, i.e., 7.82 mg/kg and 5.12 mg/kg for vegetables and soil samples, respectively. The maximum value of the bioconcentration factor (BCF), the highest value of Estimated Daily Intake (EDI), and the maximum Target Cancer Risk (TCR) value recorded were 19.39, 0.001, and 8.09 × 10-5 for Cd, Zn, and Cr, respectively. But, Hazard Index (HI) indicated no potential health effects. On the other hand, the concentration of heavy metals in the soil sample showed that Cr and Cd were strongly positively correlated with the concentration of Pb in vegetables during May. Cd concentration in the water sample was also strongly positively correlated with the concentration of Pb during May. The application of proper management for the reduction of contaminants, and suitable irrigation methods with treated wastewater is essential. The study can provide a basis for the City Administration of Addis Ababa to properly protect the water quality of rivers and provide a reference for river management around the industry parks across the country.

Abstract
Background Thyroid Cancer (TC) is the most common malignant disease of endocrine system, and its incidence rate is increasing year by year. Early diagnosis, management of malignant nodules and scientific treatment are crucial for TC prognosis. The first aim is the construction of a classification model for TC based on risk factors. The second aim is the construction of a prediction model for metastasis based on risk factors. Methods We retrospectively collected approximately 70 preoperative demographic and laboratory test indices from 1735 TC patients. Machine learning pipelines including linear regression model ridge, Logistic Regression (LR) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) were used to select the best model for predicting deterioration and metastasis of TC. A comprehensive comparative analysis with the prediction model using only thyroid imaging reporting and data system (TI-RADS). Results The XGBoost model achieved the best performance in the final thyroid nodule diagnosis (AUC: 0.84) and metastasis (AUC: 0.72-0.77) predictions. Its AUCs for predicting Grade 4 TC deterioration and metastasis reached 0.84 and 0.97, respectively, while none of the AUCs for Only TI-RADS reached 0.70. Based on multivariate analysis and feature selection, age, obesity, prothrombin time, fibrinogen, and HBeAb were common significant risk factors for tumor progression and metastasis. Monocyte, D-dimer, T3, FT3, and albumin were common protective factors. Tumor size (11.14 ± 7.14 mm) is the most important indicator of metastasis formation. In addition, GGT, glucose, platelet volume distribution width, and neutrophil percentage also contributed to the development of metastases. The abnormal levels of blood lipid and uric acid were closely related to the deterioration of tumor. The dual role of mean erythrocytic hemoglobin concentration in TC needs to be verified in a larger patient cohort. We have established a free online tool (http://www.cancer-thyroid.com/) that is available to all clinicians for the prognosis of patients at high risk of TC. Conclusion It is feasible to use XGBoost algorithm, combined with preoperative laboratory test indexes and demographic characteristics to predict tumor progression and metastasis in patients with TC, and its performance is better than that of Only using TI-RADS. The web tools we developed can help physicians with less clinical experience to choose the appropriate clinical decision or secondary confirmation of diagnosis results.

Abstract
Environmental factors are established contributors to thyroid carcinomas. Due to their known ability to cause cancer, exposure to several organic and inorganic chemical toxicants and radiation from nuclear weapons, fallout, or medical radiation poses a threat to global public health. Halogenated substances like organochlorines and pesticides can interfere with thyroid function. Like phthalates and bisphenolates, polychlorinated biphenyls and their metabolites, along with polybrominated diethyl ethers, impact thyroid hormones biosynthesis, transport, binding to target organs, and impair thyroid function. A deeper understanding of environmental exposure is crucial for managing and preventing thyroid cancer. This review aims to investigate the relationship between environmental factors and the development of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ionizing radiation (IR) is high-energy radiation that has the potential to displace electrons from atoms and break chemical bonds. It has the ability to introduce mutations, DNA strand breakage, and cell death. Being a radiosensitive organ, exposure of the thyroid gland to IR can lead to significant changes in its function. AIM OF THE WORK Was to measure the levels of thyroid hormones panel and ultrasonography abnormalities in medical staff occupationally exposed to IR. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A total of 120 subjects were divided into three main groups: Group I: radiation-exposed workers occupationally exposed to radioiodine (131I) (n = 40), Group II: radiation-exposed workers occupationally exposed to X-ray (n = 40), and Group III: non-exposed healthy professionals matched in age and sex with the previous groups (n = 40). Thyroid hormones panel including free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies (anti-TPO), and thyroglobulin (Tg) were measured. Thyroid ultrasonography was performed. Oxidative stress markers such as malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured. RESULTS Group I had significantly higher fT3 levels than the control group. fT3 levels were considerably higher, while TSH was substantially lower in group II participants than in the control group. Tg was markedly lower in radiation-exposed workers. However, anti-TPO levels in radiation-exposed workers were significantly higher than in the control group. MDA and H2O2 were substantially higher; TAC was significantly lower in radiation-exposed workers compared to the control group. According to ultrasonographic examination, thyroid volume and the percentage of thyroid nodules in all radiation workers were significantly higher than in the control group. CONCLUSION Despite low exposure doses, occupational exposure to IR affects the thyroid hormones and links with a higher likelihood of developing thyroid immune diseases.

Abstract
The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased considerably in the last few decades. Environmental factors, including plasticizers, are recognized as potential risks leading to thyroid cancer in humans. In this study, we used a transcriptome-metabolome-wide association study to find the unidentified carcinogenic mechanism of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) in thyroid and biomarkers for non-invasive diagnosis. Rats were treated with different doses of DEHP (0, 0.3, 3, 30, 150 mg DEHP/kg bw/day) for 13 weeks. Then, the thyroids were processed for Ki67 staining and RNA-seq. Also, 17-h urine samples were collected for high-resolution metabolomics analysis. After a high dose of DEHP exposure, the terminal body weights and the thyroid and parathyroid glands weights were not altered. However, the liver weights and numbers of Ki67-positive cells were increased. Further, multivariate statistical analysis revealed that metabolic shifts were considerably altered above 30 mg DEHP/kg bw/day. In RNA-seq analysis, some cancer-related genes were altered, including 18 upregulated and 9 downregulated transcripts. These cancer transcripts and whole metabolome data were integrated to uncover thyroid cancer-related metabolic pathways, which revealed that cancer-related transcripts had a network structure linked to eicosanoids such as leukotriene D4 and prostaglandin. In brief, our study demonstrated that DEHP can induce thyroid hyperplasia through the eicosanoid-associated pathway, providing further insight into the mechanism of DEHP-associated thyroid cancer.

Abstract
The increasing rate of thyroid cancer may be attributable to endocrine disruptive chemicals. Lindane is a persistent organochlorine pesticide with endocrine disruptive properties that has been classified as carcinogenic to humans. The aim of this ecological study was to evaluate potential correlation between lindane exposure and thyroid cancer incidence in the United States (US). Data on statewide age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rate (per 100,000 people) was obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for all US states for 2019. Lindane use estimates per cropland (kg/acres cropland) were then overlaid on the map of age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rate using ArcGIS. The trend of lindane use in the US between 1992 and 2007 was calculated using the Mann Kendall correlation test. The correlation between statewide lindane use and age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rates was calculated using Spearman correlation. Lindane use in the US decreased significantly between 1992 and 2007 (T = -0.617; p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant correlation between lindane use in 1992 and thyroid cancer incidence rate for any of the years between 1999 and 2019. Our results suggest that restrictions clearly seem to be effective in reducing lindane use, however, more research is needed for individual pesticides and thyroid cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Genetic factors are important in the occurrence and development of thyroid cancer, and genetic diagnosis has become an important basis for the prognosis of benign and malignant nodules. We identify a family of six siblings with inherited thyroid cancer susceptibility. All six members of this generation have been definitely diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma. This work aims at confirming the relevant causative genes for thyroid cancer in this pedigree. METHODS We extract DNA from the peripheral blood of six individuals and perform whole genome sequencing. Sanger sequencing and immunohistochemistry further testify the cathepsin F (CTSF) mutation and expression. RESULTS We identify 57 single nucleotide variations (SNVs) out of at least 4 affected family members via certain filter criteria. The CTSF gene found in five of the six family members is here considered the most promising candidate gene mutation for familial thyroid cancer. Besides, our research also proves several known genes including CTSB, TEKT4, ESR1, MSH6, DIRC3, GNAS, and BANCR that act as probable oncogenic drivers in this family. The Sanger sequencing identifies the existence and veracity of CTSF somatic mutations. The CTSF immunohistochemistry of thyroid cancer tissue specimens displays that higher CTSF expression in mutated patients than that in wild-type patient as well as pericarcinomatous tissue. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that the evaluation of CTSF gene mutations of patients in thyroid cancer families may be predictive and valuable for the familial heredity of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Phthalates are a group of phthalic acid esters used as plasticisers in a large number of products to improve their flexibility, softness, and extensibility. Their wide use in medical devices, however, raises a lot of concern, as they can enter the organism and have toxic effects on human liver, thyroid, kidneys, lungs, reproductive, endocrine, nervous, and respiratory system and are associated with asthma, obesity, autism, and diabetes. The aim of this review is to summarise current knowledge about phthalate migration from medical devices during different medical procedures and possible impact on patient health. It also looks at alternative plasticisers with supposedly lower migration rates and safer profile. Not enough is known about which and how many phthalates make part of medical devices or about the health impacts of alternative plasticisers or their migration rates.

Abstract
Objective Sex-specific thyroid cancer risk exists in patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM). However, thyroid cancer risk in different types of DM is still unclear. This meta-analysis aims to identify the real correlation between different types of DM and thyroid cancer risk in both sexes. Methods Studies were identified by an electronic search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library on 16 January 2022. A random-effects model was used to estimate the relative risks (RRs). The Cochran's Q and I2 statistics were computed to detect heterogeneity between studies. Results In comparison with non-DM counterparts, patients with DM had a 1.32-fold higher risk of thyroid cancer (95% CI, 1.22-1.44) with 1.26-fold (95% CI, 1.12-1.41) in men and 1.36-fold (95% CI, 1.22-1.52) in women, respectively. Subgroup analysis by the type of DM showed that the RR of thyroid cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes was 1.34 (95% CI, 1.17-1.53) in the study population with 1.32 (95% CI, 1.12-1.54) in men and 1.37 (95% CI, 1.12-1.68) in women, respectively; the RR of thyroid cancer was 1.30 (95% CI, 1.17-1.43) in patients with gestational diabetes; the risk of thyroid cancer in patients with type 1 diabetes was 1.51-fold in women but not in men. Although there were some heterogeneities, it did not affect the above results of this study. Conclusion This study indicates that, compared with non-DM individuals, patients with any type of DM have an elevated thyroid cancer risk. Abstract
Background: Previous studies suggested that mercury may be linked to thyroid cancer due to its bioaccumulation in the thyroid gland, but no studies have evaluated the association between mercury exposure and thyroid cancer risk. We examined the relationship between mercury exposure and thyroid cancer risk, with the potential modification of hematological parameters. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study among residents living near industrial complexes in South Korea (recruited from 2003 to 2011). Incident thyroid cancer cases (C73, ICD-10 code) were identified from the National Cancer Registry and Statistics Korea. Urinary mercury concentrations were measured using thermal decomposition amalgamation atomic absorption spectrometry (TDA-AAS). Cox proportional hazards regression models (adjusted for age, sex, educational level, smoking status, and employment) were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and confidence interval [CI] between mercury exposure and the incidence of thyroid cancer. Results: We documented 69 cases of thyroid cancer in a total of 5213 participants during follow-up (median 8.7 years). The geometric mean of urinary mercury concentration was 1.8 μg/L for thyroid cancer cases and 1.2 μg/L for noncases (p for difference = 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, those in the highest tertile of urinary mercury levels had a twofold higher risk of thyroid cancer (HR = 1.97 [CI 1.03 - 3.80] in the highest tertile vs. the lowest tertile, p for trend = 0.043). This association was stronger for those with lower mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin status. Conclusions: Urinary mercury concentration was positively associated with the risk of thyroid cancer among residents living near national industrial complexes, and this association was influenced by red blood cell indices status. These results provide some evidence suggesting the adverse effects of environmental metal pollution in the development of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the biological effects of occupational extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) exposure on the thyroid gland. METHODS We conducted a prospective analysis of 85 workers (exposure group) exposed to an ELF-EMF (100 μT, 10-100 Hz) produced by the electromagnetic aircraft launch system and followed up on thyroid function indices, immunological indices, and color Doppler images for 3 years. Additionally, 116 healthy volunteers were randomly selected as controls (control group), the thyroid function of whom was compared to the exposure group. RESULTS No significant difference was observed in thyroid function between the exposure and control groups. During the follow-up of the exposure group, the serum free triiodothyronine (FT3) level was found to slowly decrease and free thyroxine (FT4) level slowly increase with increasing exposure time. However, no significant difference was found in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) over the three years, and no significant difference was observed in the FT3, FT4 and TSH levels between different exposure subgroups. Furthermore, no significant changes were observed in thyroid autoantibody levels and ultrasound images between subgroups or over time. CONCLUSION Long-term exposure to ELF-EMF may promote thyroid secretion of T4 and inhibit deiodination of T4 to T3. ELF-EMF has no significant effect on thyroid immune function and morphology.

Abstract
Phthalic acid esters (PAEs), known as phthalates, have a variety of industrial applications, mainly related to their ability to increase plastic softness,flexibility, and durability. With regard to toxicological aspects, several studies suggest that phthalates would act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and they have been correlated to several forms of cancer. Since the analysis of PAEs in food is challenging, the aim of this study was the development of a simple and direct method, with no sample preparation (only dilution withsolvent), for the analysis of targeted phthalates in vegetable oils, by using cryogenic-modulation comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The method was characterized by good repeatability values, limit of quantification values ranging between 0.06 and 2.10 mg/kg, accuracy values ranging from -9.2 to 10.4%, and a matrix effectranging from -4 to 78%.The developed technique was used for the analysis of 27 vegetable oils.

Abstract
Twenty years after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, the association between exposures present at the World Trade Center (WTC) site and the risk of several specific types of cancer has been reported among rescue and recovery workers. The authors' objective was to conduct an updated review of these data. Most studies have found elevated rates of both prostate and thyroid cancers compared with rates in the general population, and some have reported statistically significant differences for the rates of all cancers as well. Studies including a larger combined cohort of WTC-exposed rescue and recovery workers from 3 main cohorts have since replicated findings for these cancers, with additional years of follow-up. Among this combined cohort, although a lower-than-expected standardized incidence ratio for all cancers was observed, WTC exposure was also related to an increased risk of cutaneous melanoma and tonsil cancer. Importantly, another study found that WTC-exposed rescue and recovery workers who are enrolled in the federally funded medical monitoring and treatment program experienced improved survival post-cancer diagnosis compared with New York state patients with cancer. On the basis of these combined cohort studies, the full effect of WTC exposure on cancer risk is becoming clearer. Consequently, the authors believe that surveillance of those with WTC exposure should be continued, and in-depth analysis of epidemiologic, molecular, and clinical aspects of specific cancers in these workers should be pursued.

Abstract
Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is an uncommon malignancy of neuroendocrine
origin derived from the parafollicular C cells. Although infrequent, the
interest in this cancer exceeds its incidence owing to its distinctive features
and its characteristic association with other endocrine tumors. Although the
majority of MTCs are sporadic, hereditary varieties occur in isolation or as a
part of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 syndrome (MEN 2). Currently,
complete surgical resection of the tumor and nodal metastases with a curative
intent remains the mainstay of therapy. The role of adjuvant therapy is limited,
although radiotherapy and newer targeted therapies are routinely used for
metastatic disease. The lack of consensus in the available guidance regarding
the most appropriate diagnostic, therapeutic and follow-up strategies has caused
substantial variability in clinical practice. Therefore, this review summarizes
the latest available evidence and guidelines on the management of MTC with an
emphasis on diagnosis, surgical treatment and follow-up.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer (THCA) is a leading endocrine cancer and becomes the fifth most commonly diagnosed malignancy in females. It is confirmed that circular RNAs (circRNAs) perform regulatory potencies in the pathological progress of THCA. Our purpose was to certify the trait of hsa_circ_0000285 (circ_0000285) and investigate its modulatory mechanism in THCA progression. We identified the expression profile of hsa_circ_0000285 in THCA by conducting qRT-PCR assay. Therewith, the potential of hsa_circ_0000285 in THCA development was determined with a set of functional experiments, including CCK-8, wound healing assay, Western blot, and xenograft model. The molecular mechanism underlying hsa_circ_0000285 was investigated with bioinformatic analysis, RIP and dual-luciferase reporter experiments. As opposed to normal samples and cells, hsa_circ_0000285 level was overtly increased in THCA specimens and cells. The downregulation of hsa_circ_0000285 weakened the proliferative and migratory capacity of THCA cells and promoted cell apoptosis. In addition, hsa_circ_0000285 silence suppressed the tumor growth of xenograft model mice in vivo. Notably, we demonstrated that hsa_circ_0000285 might target miR-127-5p/CDH2 axis in THCA. Afterward, our findings manifested that miR-127-5p attenuation blocked the function of hsa_circ_0000285 depletion in THCA cells. In the final step, CDH2 was proven to mediate the repressive potency of miR-127-5p in the malignant behaviors of THCA. Mechanistically, hsa_circ_0000285 induced the development of THCA via functioning as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) of miR-127-5p to enhance CDH2 expression, which provided a new perspective for THCA therapy.

Abstract
Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) have many adverse health effects due to bioaccumulation capability and their long persistence in the environment. As a renewable water source, the effluents of municipal wastewater treatment systems have been used to irrigate agricultural products widely. However, the evidence on the bioaccumulation of PTEs in crops irrigated with these effluents is still scarce, with no available study in low and middle-income countries. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the PTEs concentration in the soil and crops irrigated with effluents of Sabzevar wastewater treatment plant and the related health risk by that. The clustered method was used to determine the soil and craps samples. Seventy cumulative samples were randomly prepared in summer and autumn 2016 and 2017 from crops, soil and effluent. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure PTEs. The health risk of exposure to PTEs was assessed using Monte Carlo simulation technique. Kruskal Wallis test and Posthoc Tukey HSD test were used to assess the mean difference of PTEs between soil, effluent and crops as well as between crops together. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) magnitude order in different crop samples was Cd > Sr > Cu > Pb > Zn > Co > As > Cr > Ni, respectively. The Cd accumulation in Sugar beet plant was significantly higher than in other samples. The highest hazard quotient (HQ) based on single PTEs was observed for As (mineral) (mean: 5.62 × 10-1 and percentile 95th: 2.13) in Okra. Regarding total HQ (THQ), the highest and lowest mean (percentile 95th) values were 1.50 (3.22) and 2.40 × 10-1 (4.01 × 10-1) for Okra and Watermelon, respectively. The mean concentrations of Co, Cr, Ni and Zn were significantly higher in crops compared to soil and influent samples. Posthoc tests indicated that the concentration of PTEs between investigated crop samples were not statistically significant different (p > 0.05). Overall, our study suggested that irrigation with the effluent of stabilization pond wastewater treatment system exerts a potential health risk due to bioaccumulation of PTEs in crops.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess ecological and health risk of heavy metals (HMs) in the 35 topsoils in southeastern Iran. Ecological and health risks were assessed based on the EPA method. The order of the HMs followed as: Zn > Cr>Cu>Pb>As>Cd. All samples, except As and Cu, had the moderate enrichment and low to moderate pollution, respectively. The As in both regions and Cu in the city was classified in the lack to minimal enrichment and no pollution category. The studied HMs in both regions were shown a low ecological risk. There was minimal possibility of adverse non-carcinogenic effects. The Cr and As had an acceptable or tolerable carcinogenic risk from ingestion route (ELCRing) in both regions. According to the important role of As, Cd and Cr from the aspect of ecological and health risk, control of their sources must be considered to attenuate ecological and human adverse effets in the studied areas.

Abstract
Groundwater aquifers are considered the second most abundant water supply for drinking water all over the world. In Iran, ground waters are commonly employed for drinking water, irrigation, and industrial purposes. Heavy metals (HMs) pose human concerns about the groundwater contamination; these pollutants are recognized to be capable of bio-accumulation, long persistence in the natural environment, and toxic effects. In the present research, the content of HMs: Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Cd), and Lead (Pb) were detected in 89 water samples collected in 2018 by underground water supplies (active wells) of Saravan city. Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Monte Carlo Simulation approach with 10,000 repetitions were applied to discover the human non-carcinogenic impacts of HMs in four groups of ages (adults, teenagers, children, and infants) of consumers. The concentrations of Cr, Pb, and Cd were in the range of 0.49-20, 0.1 to 58.34, and 0.11-12.8 μg/L, respectively. The mean HQ calculated due to exposure to Pb (0.0018-0.0023), Cr (0.0112-0.0186), and Cd (0.0370-0.0615) were lower than one. The findings of sensitivity analysis revealed that HMs concentration had the most contribution effect on human non-carcinogenic risk analysis in four different exposed populations. This study could assist researchers to perform more comprehensive studies with more samples. Therefore, further research is required for decision-makers to plan proper measurements properly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Statistically significantly increased cancer incidence has been reported from 3 cohorts of World Trade Center (WTC) disaster rescue and recovery workers. We pooled data across these cohorts to address ongoing public concerns regarding cancer risk 14 years after WTC exposure. METHODS From a combined deduplicated cohort of 69 102 WTC rescue and recovery workers, a sample of 57 402 workers enrolled before 2009 and followed through 2015 was studied. Invasive cancers diagnosed in 2002-2015 were identified from 13 state cancer registries. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were used to assess cancer incidence. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) were estimated from Cox regression to examine associations between WTC exposures and cancer risk. RESULTS Of the 3611 incident cancers identified, 3236 were reported as first-time primary (FP) cancers, with an accumulated 649 724 and 624 620 person-years of follow-up, respectively. Incidence for combined FP cancers was below expectation (SIR = 0.96, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.93 to 0.99). Statistically significantly elevated SIRs were observed for melanoma-skin (SIR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.24 to 1.64), prostate (SIR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.11 to 1.26), thyroid (SIR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.57 to 2.09), and tonsil (SIR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.00 to 1.91) cancer. Those arriving on September 11 had statistically significantly higher aHRs than those arriving after September 17, 2001, for prostate (aHR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.33 to 1.95) and thyroid (aHR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.11 to 2.81) cancers, with a statistically significant exposure-response trend for both. CONCLUSIONS In the largest cohort of 9/11 rescue and recovery workers ever studied, overall cancer incidence was lower than expected, and intensity of WTC exposure was associated with increased risk for specific cancer sites, demonstrating the value of long-term follow-up studies after environmental disasters.

Abstract
The vast majority of thyroid cancers originate from follicular cells. We outline outstanding issues at each step along the path of cancer patient care, from prevention to post-treatment follow-up and highlight how emerging technologies will help address them in the coming years. Three directions will dominate the coming technological landscape. Genomics will reveal tumoral evolutionary history and shed light on how these cancers arise from the normal epithelium and the genomics alteration driving their progression. Transcriptomics will gain cellular and spatial resolution providing a full account of intra-tumor heterogeneity and opening a window on the microenvironment supporting thyroid tumor growth. Artificial intelligence will set morphological analysis on an objective quantitative ground laying the foundations of a systematic thyroid tumor classification system. It will also integrate into unified representations the molecular and morphological perspectives on thyroid cancer.

Abstract
There are still many questions remaining about the etiopathogenesis of thyroid cancer, the most common type of endocrine neoplasia. Numerous occupational and environmental exposures have been shown to represent important risk factors that increase its incidence. Updated information about thyroid cancer diagnostics related to occupational and environmental risk factors is reviewed here, considering an integrated risk assessment approach; new data concerning thyroid cancer etiology and pathogenesis mechanisms, diagnostic biomarkers and methodologies, and risk factors involved in its pathogenesis are presented. A special emphasis is dedicated to specific occupational risk factors and to the association between environmental risk agents and thyroid cancer development. The occupational environment is taken into consideration, i.e., the current workplace and previous jobs, as well as data regarding risk factors, e.g., age, gender, family history, lifestyle, use of chemicals, or radiation exposure outside the workplace. Finally, an integrative approach is presented, underlying the need for an accurate Risk Assessment Matrix based on a systematic questionnaire. We propose a complex experimental design that contains different inclusion and exclusion criteria for patient groups, detailed working protocols for achieving coherent and sustainable, well-defined research stages from sample collection to the identification of biomarkers, with correlations between specific oncometabolites integrated into the Risk Assessment Matrix.
