Abstract
BACKGROUND The Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU) partially harmonised the regulation of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in Europe, but individual countries maintain jurisdiction over bans on use in public places, domestic advertising, taxation and flavour regulations. Their association with youth e-cigarette use has not been examined. METHODS We used the cross-sectional 2019 European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs data from 32 countries with 98 758 students aged 15-16 years and the 2020 WHO's assessment of the e-cigarette regulations. Multilevel logistic regression models on ever (vs never) and current (vs non-current) exclusive e-cigarette use, exclusive cigarette use and dual use by e-cigarette regulations' composite score were adjusted for age, gender, parental education, perceived family's financial well-being, perceived difficulty of obtaining cigarettes, country income level and general progress in tobacco control. RESULTS Of the respondents, 13.3% had ever used cigarettes, 10.6% e-cigarettes and 27.3% both; 13.0% currently used cigarettes, 6.0% e-cigarettes and 6.4% both. Higher composite country score in the e-cigarette regulations was associated with lower current exclusive e-cigarette use (OR=0.78; 95% CI 0.65 to 0.94) and current dual use (OR=0.80; 95% CI 0.67 to 0.95). Youth perceiving more difficulties in obtaining cigarettes were less likely to use cigarettes, e-cigarettes and both ever and currently (OR from 0.80 (95% CI 0.76 to 0.85) to 0.94 (95% CI 0.92 to 0.96)). CONCLUSIONS More comprehensive e-cigarette regulations and enforcement of age-of-sale laws may be protective of e-cigarette and dual use among adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide cutting-edge information on the impact and risks of using Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) by children and adolescents, based on the latest evidence published in the literature. DATA SOURCE A comprehensive search was carried out on PubMed, using the expressions ''electronic cigarettes'' OR ''electronic nicotine delivery systems" OR "vaping" AND ''adolescent'' AND "risks" AND ''acute lung injury'. All retrieved articles had their titles and abstracts read to identify and fully read the papers reporting the most recent evidence on each subject. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS The use of ENDS has alarmingly increased in Brazil and around the world. The possibility of customizing use, the choice of flavors and nicotine content, and the general notion that these devices are harmless when compared to conventional cigarettes are some of the factors responsible for this increase. Numerous scientific studies have proven that electronic cigarettes have serious consequences for the respiratory system, such as EVALI (E-cigarette or Vaping-Associated Lung Injury) and difficult-to-control asthma, as well as harmful effects on the neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and immunological systems. High concentrations of nicotine make many young people addicted to this substance. In Brazil, commercialization, import, and advertising are prohibited. The viable interventions to address the use of these devices in children and adolescents are prevention and behavioral counseling. CONCLUSION There is clear scientific evidence that these devices pose a risk to the physical and mental health of children and adolescents.

Abstract
Smoking poses a significant threat to adolescent health because of its immediate and long-term detrimental health effects. Smoking refusal self-efficacy predicts smoking behavior in adolescence. In adolescents' health education, digital interventions are potential tools to support smoking refusal self-efficacy. The aim of this two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital health game intervention compared with a no-intervention control group on smoking refusal self-efficacy in 10- to 13-year-old Finnish early adolescents. The early adolescents (n = 781) were randomized to the control group (n = 394) and the health game intervention group (n = 387). Smoking refusal self-efficacy, sources of smoking and snus refusal self-efficacy, and motivation to decline smoking and snus use in the future were measured at baseline, 2-week postintervention, and 3-month follow-up. Data were analyzed using linear mixed model and Wilcoxon rank-based test for clustered data. According to the results, the intervention group made improvements in sources of smoking and snus refusal self-efficacy between baseline and postintervention, and in sources of snus refusal self-efficacy between baseline and follow-up, compared with the control group. The intervention group showed improvements in smoking refusal self-efficacy among 12-year-olds between baseline and follow-up, and postintervention and follow-up compared with the control group. Similar improvements were also found among those with a smoking friend or a smoking parent between postintervention and follow-up. The results were promising for the use of digital health game interventions to promote early adolescent smoking refusal self-efficacy and preventing smoking experimentation. Further research can evaluate the long-term effects for adolescents.

Abstract
A good old gateway theory that electronic-cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are widely recognized as safer tobacco substitutes. In actuality, demographics also show that vaping cannibalizes smoking, the best explanation of the data is the "common liability". However, the utilization of e-cigarette products remains a controversial topic at present. Currently, there has been a widespread and substantial growth in e-cigarette use worldwide owing to their endless new flavors and customizable characteristics. Furthermore, e-cigarette has grown widespread among smokers as well as non-smokers, including adolescents and young adults. And some studies have shown that e-cigarette users are at greater risk to start using combustible cigarettes while e-cigarettes use was also observed the potential benefits to people who want to quit smoking or not. Although it is true that e-cigarettes generally contain fewer toxic substances than combustible cigarettes, this does not mean that the chemical composition in e-cigarettes aerosols poses absolutely no risks. While concerns about toxic substances in e-cigarettes and their widespread use in the population are reasonable, it is also crucial to consider that e-cigarettes have been associated with the potential for promoting smoking cessation and the clinically relevant improvements in users with smoking-related pathologies. Meanwhile, there is still short of understanding of the health impacts associated with e-cigarette use. Therefore, in this review, we discussed the health impacts of e-cigarette exposure on oral, nasal, pulmonary, cardiovascular systems and brain. We aspire for this review to change people's previous perceptions of e-cigarettes and provide them with a more balanced perspective. Additionally, we suggest appropriate adjustments on regulation and policy for e-cigarette to gain greater public health benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS It is postulated that due to decreased smoking rates and increased denormalisation of smoking, those who start and maintain smoking have more socially disadvantaged characteristics and are more dependent on nicotine than those who do not (the so-called 'hardening' hypothesis). The aim of this study was to measure changes in daily smoking and cigarette consumption among Finnish adolescents according to background factors. DESIGN AND SETTING A repeated cross-sectional study using data from European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD) on six representative cross-sections of 15- to 16-year-old students between 1999 and 2019 in Finland. PARTICIPANTS A total of 11 377 males and 12 247 females. MEASUREMENTS The outcome measures included the proportion of daily smokers among current smokers, daily smoking and the estimated mean number of smoked cigarettes per day (CPD). Substance use, parental monitoring and school performance were used as independent variables. All measures were self-reported. FINDINGS Daily smoking decreased over time and daily smokers constituted a smaller part of current smokers in 2019 compared with 1999 (the ratio among boys 0.68 and 0.43, respectively; among girls 0.59 and 0.43). Boys using cannabis (interaction between cannabis*survey year: P = 0.020; in 2019 odds ratio [OR]: 3.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.23-6.08) and girls with heavy episodic drinking (interaction between heavy episodic drinking*survey year: P = 0.006, in 2019 OR: 9.00, 95% CI 5.61-14.42) had elevated adjusted odds for daily smoking over time. The estimated mean number of CPD decreased among daily smokers from 9.0 in 1999 to 7.2 in 2019 (P = 0.0002) and the differences diminished between groups based on gender, snus/alcohol use and parental monitoring. The between-group differences remained with regard to cannabis use (P = 0.0233 in 2019) and school performance (P = 0.0111 in 2019). CONCLUSIONS Among currently smoking Finnish adolescents, the proportion of daily smokers decreased between 1999 and 2019, as did the number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD) among daily smokers, suggesting an absence of 'hardening' in this group. However, differences were observed related to the odds of daily smoking and the mean number of CPD, indicating the change has been less favorable among some adolescent groups than others.

Abstract
AIMS Europe's Beating Cancer Plan set a goal of creating a Tobacco-Free Generation in Europe by 2040. Prevention is important for achieving this goal. We compare the Nordic countries' preventive tobacco policies, discuss the possible determinants for similarities and differences in policy implementation, and provide strategies for strengthening tobacco prevention. METHODS We used the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) to identify the key policies for this narrative review. We focused on Articles 6, 8, 9, 11, 13 and 16 of the WHO FCTC, and assessed the status of the required (core) and recommended (advanced) policies and their application to novel tobacco and nicotine products. Information on the implementation of strategies, acts and regulations were searched from global and national tobacco control databases, websites and scientific articles via PubMed and MEDLINE. RESULTS The WHO FCTC and European regulations have ensured that the core policies are mostly in place, but also contributed to the shared deficiencies that are seen especially in the regulations on smokeless tobacco and novel products. Strong national tobacco control actors have facilitated countries to implement some advanced policies - even as the first countries in the world: point-of-sale display bans (Iceland), outdoor smoking bans (Sweden), flavour bans on electronic cigarettes (Finland), plain packaging (Norway), and plain packaging on electronic cigarettes (Denmark). CONCLUSIONS Collaboration and participation in reinforcing the European regulations, resources for national networking between tobacco control actors, and national regulations to provide protection from the tobacco industry's interference are needed to strengthen comprehensive implementation of tobacco policies in the Nordic countries.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most adolescent and young adult (youth) smokers and users of novel nicotine products wish to quit. Little is known, at a population level, about youth cessation activities, and the counselor's experiences in working with youth smoking and nicotine product cessation. METHODS A questionnaire was mailed to all 98 municipalities in Denmark on 31 October 2022. Youths were defined as those aged 16-25 years. The participation rate was 96% (n=94). Simple descriptive statistics were performed. RESULTS This survey explored youth-targeted smoking and nicotine product cessation activities and ex-periences from municipality counselors across the whole nation. Overall, 60% of the Danish municipal counselors had low/very low/no personal experience with youth cessation interventions, 89% found it dif-ficult to work with youth counseling, 90% found it difficult to recruit youth to nicotine cessation services, and only 25% of the active municipalities were described as highly experienced. A higher percentage of the highly experienced municipalities reported that they share the responsibility of recruitment to cessation services with schools, counsel youths in separate groups from adults, and have good experiences with online counseling. CONCLUSIONS This Danish nationwide survey showed that even in a country with very well-organized and free-of-charge cessation counseling programs, very few municipalities give assistance to youth, and most find it difficult to work with youth. Cessation services have been designed for adult smokers and seem to have failed to meet the needs of young smokers and users of novel nicotine products, at least in Denmark. There is an urgent need for research on how to effectively recruit youth to cessation services, and what works to help youth quit.

Abstract
Alcohol and cigarettes are the psychoactive substances that adolescents use most frequently. When both addictions are combined, they carry the worst burden of disease globally. The objective of this study was to identify whether socioeconomic factors correlate with alcohol and tobacco consumption in Mexican adolescents aged 10 years or more and to establish the relationship in the consumption between the two substances. This ecological study utilized data describing alcohol and tobacco consumption among adolescents aged 10-16 years (n = 48,837 ≈ N = 11,621,100). Having ever consumed any alcohol-containing beverage constituted alcohol consumption. Smoking a cigarette within 30 days constituted cigarette consumption. For both variables, the state-level percentages reported in the survey were used. Diverse socioeconomic variables were collected from official sources. Data on the prevalence of tobacco use and alcohol consumption were entered into an Excel database estimated for each of the states of the Mexican Republic, as well as the socioeconomic variables. We performed the analysis using Stata 14. Consumption prevalence was 15.0% for alcohol and 4.2% for tobacco. Alcohol consumption was not correlated with any studied socioeconomic variable (p > 0.05). The prevalence of tobacco consumption among elementary school students correlated (p < 0.05) with the portion of the population living in private dwellings without sewage, drainage, or sanitation (r = 0.3853). The prevalence of tobacco consumption among middle-school adolescents correlated with the portion of the employed population that earned up to two minimum wages (r = 0.3960), the percentage in poverty by income 2008 (r = 0.4754) and 2010 (r = 0.4531), and the percentage in extreme poverty by income 2008 (r = 0.4612) and 2010 (r = 0.4291). Positive correlations were found between tobacco consumption and alcohol consumption among both elementary (r = 0.5762, p=0.0006) and middle-school children (r = 0.7016, p=0.0000). These results suggest that certain socioeconomic factors correlate with tobacco consumption but not alcohol consumption. A correlation between alcohol consumption and tobacco consumption was observed. The results can be used for developing interventions in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The introduction of e-cigarettes on the tobacco market has brought new regulatory challenges, and particular concerns relate to e-cigarette uptake among young people. The aim of this study was to explore the use and social meaning of e-cigarettes among Nordic young people and to discuss this in the context of current legislation. METHODS Thirteen focus groups were conducted with 46 Danish, Finnish, and Norwegian young people (24 boys) with vaping experience aged 15-20 years (mean age 17 years). RESULTS Young people's vaping stood out as an inherently social practice that was commonly interlinked with experimental use patterns. Relative to smoking, vaping was seen as socially acceptable and less harmful to health. Product innovations like flavour additives and nicotine-free liquid options added to perceptions of low harm, and innovative device design features facilitated new and playful user practices. Finally, digital markets eased the young people's access to e-cigarettes, and the digital world also represented an arena for e-cigarette exposure and self-presentation. They commonly viewed vaping-related content in their social media feeds and also produced such content themselves. CONCLUSION Young people's vaping is a social practice interwoven in contemporary digital and global youth culture. Transnational regulations are needed to support individual countries in preventing e-cigarette use and exposure among young people.
