Current Challenges in Microcapsule Designs and Microencapsulation Processes: A Review

Microencapsulation is an advanced methodology for the protection, preservation, and/or delivery of active materials in a wide range of industrial sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, fragrances, paints, coatings, detergents, food products, and agrochemicals. Polymeric materials have been extensively used as microcapsule shells to provide appropriate barrier properties to achieve controlled release of the encapsulated active ingredient. However, significant limitations are associated with such capsules, including undesired leaching and the nonbiodegradable nature of the typically used polymers. In addition, the energy cost of manufacturing microcapsules is an important factor to be considered when designing microcapsule systems and the corresponding production processes. Recent factors linked to UN sustainability goals are modifying how such microencapsulation systems should be designed in pursuit of "ideal" microcapsules that are efficient, safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly. This review provides an overview of advances in microencapsulation, with emphasis on sustainable microcapsule designs. The key evaluation techniques to assess the biodegradability of microcapsules, in compliance with recently evolving European Union requirements, are also described. Moreover, the most common methodologies for the fabrication of microcapsules are presented within the framework of their energy demand. Recent promising microcapsule designs are also highlighted for their suitability toward meeting current design requirements and stringent regulations, tackling the ongoing challenges, limitations, and opportunities.

Compressive elasticity of epoxy functionalized Chitosan-based semi-IPN cryobeads of N-alkyl methacrylate esters: Validity of the Hertzian model with experiments

In situ forming poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-glycidylmethacrylate)/Chitosan, P(DMAEMA-co-GMA)/Chitosan, (PDG/CS) cryobeads based on "dropwise freezing into cryogenic liquid method" combined with "blending with polymer method" are promising for applications due to their pH-responsiveness and stability under physiological conditions. Based on classical contact mechanics, Hertzian elasticity of semi-interpenetrated network (semi-IPN) cryobeads was analyzed to examine whether there is a direct correlation between elastic properties of single particle and its macroscopic behavior. A one-step procedure has been proposed to design chitosan-interpenetrated cryobeads with a cationic nature via combination of structural properties as well as functionality of chitosan containing primary and secondary hydroxyl and amino groups. The study is focused on characterization of network formation kinetics in different shapes and how different production variables affect the elasticity/swelling performance of cross-linked system. The elastic properties of semi-IPN cryobeads were improved by both adding chitosan to copolymer PDG structure and lowering the gelation temperature to cryogelation conditions. The results obtained highlighted the importance of composition to modulate elasticity, the influence of preparation temperature and shape of cryobeads on their elasticity. Findings regarding the topography-dependent local elastic properties of chitosan-incorporated semi-IPN gels offer possibilities for modulating the behavior of chitosan-based soft materials.

Construction and biological effects of a redox-enzyme dual-responsive lufenuron nano-controlled release formulation

BACKGROUND

Pesticide formulations based on nanotechnology can effectively improve the efficiency of pesticide utilization and reduce pesticide residues in the environment. In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles containing disulfide bonds were synthesized by the sol-gel method, carboxylated and adsorbed with lufenuron, and grafted with cellulose to obtain a lufenuron-loaded nano-controlled release formulation (Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose).

RESULTS

The structure and properties of Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose were characterized. The results showed that Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose exhibits a regular spherical shape with 12.41% pesticide loading. The highest cumulative release rate (73.46%) of this pesticide-loaded nanoparticle was observed at 7 days in the environment of glutathione and cellulase, which shows redox-enzyme dual-responsive performance. As a result of cellulose grafting, Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose had a small contact angle and high adhesion work on corn leaves, indicating good wetting and adhesion properties. After 14 days of spraying with 20 mg L-1 formulations in the long-term control efficacy experiment, the mortality of Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose against Ostrinia furnacalis larvae (56.67%) was significantly higher than that of commercial Luf@EW (36.67%). Luf@MSNs-ss-cellulose is safer for earthworms and L02 cells.

CONCLUSION

The nano-controlled release formulation obtained in this study achieved intelligent pesticide delivery in time and space under the environmental stimulation of glutathione and cellulase, providing an effective method for the development of novel pesticide delivery systems. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Ascendancy of pyraclostrobin nanocapsule formulation against Rhizoctonia solani: From a perspective of fungus

High-performance pesticide formulations are essential for sustainable agriculture. Among these, nano-pesticides exhibit great advantages in pest control because of their unique size effects. However, the direct effects of nano-formulation fungicides on fungal pathogens remain largely unexplored. In this study, three qualified formulations, suspension concentrate (SC), microcapsules (CS), and nanocapsules (NCS) of pyraclostrobin (PYR) were prepared and utilized to reveal their biocontrol activities against Rhizoctonia solani. Among these three formulations, NCS exhibited notable biocontrol efficacy against R. solani exemplified by an EC50 of 0.319 mg/L for mycelia, distortion of mycelia and abnormalities in cell ultrastructure. Moreover, NCS displayed excellent internalization within R. solani mycelia, contributing to severe damage to cell membrane permeability. Importantly, an equivalent quantity of NCS-PYR showed potent inhibitory effects on the target pathogen, as indicated by reduced adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content and mitochondrial Complex III activity. The NCS consistently exhibited superior in vivo protective and curative activities against R. solani compared to those of CS and SC in rice and faba bean. In summary, we uncovered the strength of rapid efficacy and biocontrol activity of NCS against R. solani and elucidated the advantages of NCS-PYR from the perspective of the target pathogen in agriculture.

Deposition and water repelling of temperature-responsive nanopesticides on leaves

Pesticides are widely used to increase agricultural productivity, however, weak adhesion and deposition lead to low efficient utilization. Herein, we prepare a nanopesticide formulation (tebuconazole nanopesticides) which is leaf-adhesive, and water-dispersed via a rapid nanoparticle precipitation method, flash nanoprecipitation, using temperature-responsive copolymers poly-(2-(dimethylamino)ethylmethylacrylate)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone) as the carrier. Compared with commercial suspensions, the encapsulation by the polymer improves the deposition of TEB, and the contact angle on foliage is lowered by 40.0°. Due to the small size and strong van der Waals interactions, the anti-washing efficiency of TEB NPs is increased by 37% in contrast to commercial ones. Finally, the acute toxicity of TEB NPs to zebrafish shows a more than 25-fold reduction as compared to commercial formulation indicating good biocompatibility of the nanopesticides. This work is expected to enhance pesticide droplet deposition and adhesion, maximize the use of pesticides, tackling one of the application challenges of pesticides.

ROS-responsive modified chitosan oligosaccharide nanocapsules for improving pesticide efficiency and intelligent release

BACKGROUND

Some traditional pesticide formulations are inefficient, leading to excessive use and abuse of pesticides, which in turn effects environment. Intelligent release pesticide formulations are ideal for improving pesticide utilization and persistence while reducing environmental pollution.

RESULTS

We designed a benzil-modified chitosan oligosaccharide (CO-BZ) to encapsulate avermectin (Ave). Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules are prepared based on a simple interfacial method via cross-linking of CO-BZ with diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). The Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules have an average particle size of 100 nm and exhibited a responsive release performance for ROS. The cumulative release rate of nanocapsules at 24 h with ROS increased by about 11.4% compared to that without ROS. The Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules displayed good photostability. Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules can penetrate root-knot nematodes more easily and exhibited better nematicidal activity against root-knot nematodes. The pot experiment showed that the control effect of Ave CS at low concentration was 53.31% at the initial stage of application (15 d), while Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules was 63.54%. Under the same conditions, the control effect of Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules on root-knot nematodes was 60.00% after 45 days of application, while Ave EC was only 13.33%. The acute toxicity experiments of earthworms showed that the toxicity of nanocapsules was significantly lower than that of EC.

CONCLUSION

The ROS-responsive nanocapsules can improve the utilization of pesticides and non-target biosafety. This modified chitosan oligosaccharide has great potential as a bio stimuli-responsive material, and this simple and convenient method for preparing Ave@CO-BZ nanocapsules provides a direction for the effective utilization of pesticides. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

A stimuli-responsive nanocarrier for diagnosis of seizures and inhibition of glutaminase in epilepsy

Epilepsy is marked by unpredictable and recurrent episodes of seizures. It is characterized by glutamate excitotoxicity and changes in stimuli such as pH, temperature and oxidative environment. This study aimed to formulate novel nanoparticulate theranostic nanocarrier for combined effects of diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy by: i) in-situ detection of epileptic conditions through characteristic changes in pH through the synthesis of pH-responsive polymer (CS-g-PD) and ii) 'on-demand' therapeutic alleviation of epileptic seizures through an inhibitor of glutaminase, 6-diazo-5-oxo-norleucine (DON). The formulation of DON-CS-g-PD-SLNs possessed nanodimensions (∼197.56 ± 17.87) nm and zeta potential (4.19 ± 0.29), with entrapment efficiency of (80.29 ± 0.006%). The coating pH-responsive polymer showed good sensitivity for acidic conditions by releasing the drug in pH 6.4 and resisting release in higher pH 7.2. In-vivo studies in Wistar rats showed suppression of epileptic seizures, escalation in the duration latency and reduction in duration of convulsions and recovery period. Furthermore, it was also successful in reducing the levels of glutaminase (p<0.0001) in the brain of PTZ-kindled rats, thereby leading to a decrease in glutamate levels (p<0.01). Hence, the nanocarriers show promising potential as 'on-demand' theranostics in epilepsy by reducing both the incidence and severity of convulsions.

Fungicide smoke generated by electrical heating effectively controls gray mold of Chinese chives and reduces residue risk through adequate environmental sterilization

BACKGROUND

Labor-saving pesticide application technology is eagerly pursued in the planting system of Chinese chives. In this study, we developed a set of application approaches by turning fungicides into smoke to achieve this goal.

RESULTS

The fungicides fludioxonil, fluopyram, boscalid, procymidone, and prochloraz could be vaporized into smoke at temperatures below 300 °C. The SFR (smoke formation rate) decreased with the increasing temperature. At 300 °C, the SFR of fludioxonil, fluopyram, boscalid and procymidone were all higher than 80%. At 300 °C and 600 °C, there were no significant differences in the smoke particle state of these five fungicides. However, the inhibition rate of these five fungicides against the growth of Botrytis squamosa generally decreased with the temperature. At 600 °C, only fludioxonil and boscalid had inhibition rates higher than 80%. The deposition uniformity of fungicide smoke increased with the increasing amounts of NH₄ Cl. When the amount of NH₄ Cl reached 80% of the total content, the smoke of fungicide was uniformly deposited throughout each glass slide. In the greenhouse experiment, the control efficacy of fungicide application by smoke was significantly better than that of spraying application, whereas its residue was much lower.

CONCLUSION

It is feasible to control air-borne disease through the vaporization of fungicides into smoke by electrical heating. Smoke application would effectively inhibit the spores in the air and would not increase the humidity of the environment. These findings indicate that smoke application is a labor-saving pesticide application technology viable in production. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The strategic applications of natural polymer nanocomposites in food packaging and agriculture: Chances, challenges, and consumers' perception

Natural polymer-based nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. They can help to eliminate the consequences of application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. Such nanocomposites consist of natural biopolymers (e.g., chitosan, starch, cellulose, alginate and many more) derived from plants, microbes and animals that are abundantly available in nature, biodegradable and thus eco-friendly, and can be used for developing nanocomposites for agriculture and food industry applications. Biopolymer-based nanocomposites can act as slow-release nanocarriers for delivering agrochemicals (fertilizers/nutrients) or pesticides to crop plants to increase yields. Similarly, biopolymer-based nanofilms or hydrogels may be used as direct product coating to extend product shelf life or improve seed germination or protection from pathogens and pests. Biopolymers have huge potential in food-packaging. However, their packaging properties, such as mechanical strength or gas, water or microbial barriers can be remarkably improved when combined with nanofillers such as nanoparticles. This article provides an overview of the strategic applications of natural polymer nanocomposites in food and agriculture as nanocarriers of active compounds, polymer-based hydrogels, nanocoatings and nanofilms. However, the risk, challenges, chances, and consumers' perceptions of nanotechnology applications in agriculture and food production and packaging have been also discussed.

Facile pathway to construct mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with pyraclostrobin: Physicochemical properties, antifungal activity, and biosafety

BACKGROUND

A controlled-release formulation based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) provides an effective way for reducing pesticide use and protecting the ecological environment. In this study, MSNs loaded with pyraclostrobin (PYR@MSNs) were prepared using a one-pot method.

RESULTS

The characteristics of PYR@MSNs were systematically investigated, including morphology, loading content, ultraviolet (UV) resistance, release behavior, control effects against pathogens, and safety to nontarget organisms. The results show that the prepared PYR@MSNs presented characteristics of regular spherical shapes, uniform particle size (200 nm), high drug loading (38.9%), and enhanced UV resistance. Compared with traditional formulation, PYR@MSNs exhibited improved control effects against Fusarium graminearum, an extended control period, and lower toxicity to zebrafish, earthworms and BEAS-2B cells.

CONCLUSIONS

This research will facilitate the development of efficient and safe pesticide delivery systems. The PYR@MSNs has showed its potential as a new controlled-release formulation with increased efficacy and is expected to benefit the sustainable development of agriculture. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Construction of a photothermal controlled-release microcapsule pesticide delivery system

This study aimed to achieve the controlled-release of bioactive ingredients in microcapsule pesticide delivery systems. A photothermal controlled-release microcapsule pesticide delivery system was constructed using chitosan and polydopamine (PDA) as the wall materials to encapsulate avermectin. All the prepared microcapsules were characterized by the methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The slow-release, UV-shielding, photothermal performance, and the nematicidal activity of the prepared microcapsules were also systematically investigated. The results indicated that the prepared microcapsules had excellent slow-release and UV-shielding performance when further encapsulated with the PDA layer relative to those of the non-PDA-encapsulated products. The photothermal sensitivity of the AVM@CS/CMA/PDA composite microcapsule under the irradiation of near-infrared light (NIR) was dramatically enhanced with the photothermal conversion efficiency (η) of 14.93%. Furthermore, the nematicidal activity of the AVM@CS/CMA/PDA composite microcapsule system was effectively improved on exposure to the irradiation of a light-emitting diode (LED) full-spectrum light. The strategies used in this study for developing the photothermal controlled-release pesticide delivery system might play an important role on improving utilization of pesticides.

Remotely Controlling Drug Release by Light-Responsive Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Microcapsules Triggered by Molecular Motors

Stimuli-responsive smart nanocarriers are an emerging class of materials applicable in fields including drug delivery and tissue engineering. Instead of constructing responsive polymer shells to control the release and delivery of drugs, in this work, we put forward a novel strategy to endow the internal drugs with light responsivity. The microcapsule consisted of molecular motor (MM)-doped cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) and drugs. The drug in gelatin-gum arabic microcapsules can protect the carried drugs for a long time with a low release speed totally resulting from drug diffusion. Under UV light, the MM isomerizes and the chirality changes, inducing the alteration of the superstructure of the CLCs. In this process, the cooperative molecular disturbance accelerates the diffusion of the drugs from the microcapsule core to the outside. As a result, thanks to the cooperative effect of liquid crystalline mesogens, molecular-scale geometric changes of motors could be amplified to the microscale disturbance of the self-organized superstructure of the CLCs, resulting in the acceleration of the drug release. This method is hoped to provide opportunities in the design and fabrication of novel functional drug delivery systems.

Preparation and Characterization of Pendimethalin Microcapsules Based on Microfluidic Technology

Microencapsulation of pesticides is a promising attempt to reduce environmental pollution and prevent the active ingredients from the interference of external factors. In this paper, pendimethalin microcapsules were prepared by the interfacial polymerization of 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and ethylenediamine (EDA) based on microfluidic technology. Effects of the microchannel structure, reaction temperature, surfactant type, and fluid flow rates were investigated and evaluated. The results showed that pendimethalin microcapsules prepared under suitable conditions had a smooth surface, good monodispersity, a high encapsulation efficiency (96.7%), and excellent thermal stability. The size and morphology control of microcapsules were realized by adjusting the flow rates of the continuous phase and the hydrophilic monomer EDA aqueous solution. The release of pendimethalin had a sustained release characteristic that was closely related to the morphology of microcapsules. Compared with the pendimethalin emulsifiable concentrate, pendimethalin microcapsules exhibited outstanding herbicidal activity in the weed control experiments. Therefore, pendimethalin microcapsules with tunable properties were successfully obtained from the microfluidic device and showed great potential in agricultural applications.

Advances in Controlled-Release Pesticide Formulations with Improved Efficacy and Targetability

Pesticides are commonly used in modern agriculture and are important for global food security. However, postapplication losses due to degradation, photolysis, evaporation, leaching, surface runoff, and other processes may substantially reduce their efficacy. Controlled-release formulations can achieve the permeation-regulated transfer of an active ingredient from a reservoir to a target surface. Thus, they can maintain an active ingredient at a predetermined concentration for a specified period. This can reduce degradation and dissipation and other losses and has the potential to improve efficacy. Recent developments in controlled-release technology have adapted the concepts of intelligence and precision from the pharmaceutical industry. In this review, we present recent advances in the development of controlled-release formulations and discuss details of the preparation methods, material improvements, and application technologies.

Preparation of thermosensitive buprofezin-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles by the sol-gel method and their application in pest control

BACKGROUND

Environmental stimuli-responsive release is one important way to reduce the dosage of pesticide, increase the usage efficiency and improve environmental compatibility.

RESULTS

On this basis, we synthesized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and modified them to develop a thermosensitive pesticide controlled release formulation (CRF). In this study, MSNs prepared by the sol-gel method were used as the core, poly (N-IsoPropylAcrylaMide) [P (NIPAM-MAA)] was used as the shell, and buprofezin (Bup) was loaded by adsorption. The prepared Bup@MSNs@P(NIPAM-MAA) could effectively prevent the degradation of buprofezin under UV light and exhibited excellent adhesion to rice leaves. The bioassay results showed that the mortality of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) treated by Bup@MSNs@P(NIPAM-MAA) was positively correlated with temperature, resulting mainly from the change of release amount of buprofezin caused by temperature variation. Bup@MSNs@P(NIPAM-MAA) had long duration (20 days) for controlling N. lugens, and did not hinder the growth of rice. Meanwhile, Bup@MSNs@P(NIPAM-MAA) had low toxicity to zebrafish and human pneumonocyte BEAS-2B cells.

CONCLUSION

This novel thermosensitive pesticide CRF can be applied widely to other insecticides, thus greatly promoting the development of intelligent pesticide formulations. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Enhanced Fungicidal Efficacy by Co-Delivery of Azoxystrobin and Diniconazole with Cauliflower-Like Metal-Organic Frameworks NH2-Al-MIL-101

Long-term use of a single fungicide increases the resistance risk and causes adverse effects on natural ecosystems. Controlled release formulations of dual fungicides with different modes of action can afford a new dimension for addressing the current issues. Based on adjustable aperture and superhigh surface area, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal candidates as pesticide release carriers. This study used Al3+ as the metal node and 2-aminoterephthalic acid as the organic chain to prepare aluminum-based metal-organic framework material (NH2-Al-MIL-101) with "cauliflower-like" structure and high surface area of 2359.0 m2/g. Fungicides of azoxystrobin (AZOX) and diniconazole (Dini) were simultaneously encapsulated into NH2-Al-MIL-101 with the loading content of 6.71% and 29.72%, respectively. Dual fungicide delivery system of AZOX@Dini@NH2-Al-MIL-101 demonstrated sustained and pH responsive release profiles. When the maximum cumulative release rate of AZOX and Dini both reached about 90%, the release time was 46 and 136 h, respectively. Furthermore, EC50 values as well as the percentage of inhibition revealed that AZOX@Dini@NH2-Al-MIL-101 had enhanced germicidal efficacy against rice sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani), evidenced by the synergistic ratio of 1.83. The present study demonstrates a potential application prospect in sustainable plant protection through co-delivery fungicides with MOFs as a platform.

Dual stimuli-responsive fungicide carrier based on hollow mesoporous silica/hydroxypropyl cellulose hybrid nanoparticles

The controlled release of pesticides based on nanoparticle platforms has emerged as a new technology for increasing the efficiency of pesticides and for reducing environmental pollution because of their size-dependent and target-modifying properties. In the present study, pH/cellulase dual stimuli-responsive controlled-release formulations (PYR-HMS-HPC) were designed by grafting hydroxypropyl cellulose onto pyraclostrobin-loaded hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles via an ester linkage. The PYR-HMS-HPC formulations were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results demonstrated that PYR-HMS-HPC with a loading capacity of 12.1 wt% showed excellent pyraclostrobin release behaviors in response to acidic environments and the introduction of cellulase, could effectively prevented pyraclostrobin from photolysis. Compared with commercial pyraclostrobin formulations, the PYR-HMS-HPC formulations showed much stronger and statistically significant fungicidal activity against Magnaporthe oryzae from 7 to 21 days. Furthermore, the Allium cepa chromosome aberration assay demonstrated that the PYR-HMS-HPC formulations reduced the genotoxicity of pyraclostrobin. These pH/cellulase dual stimuli-responsive controlled-release formulations are of great interest for sustainable on-demand crop disease protection.

Preparation of biological sustained-release nanocapsules and explore on algae-killing properties

Introduction

Green algae seriously affect the quality and yield of Torreya grandis, it is important to explore new, environmentally friendly ways to control it.

Objectives

The present study aimed at preparing sustained-release algae-killing nanocapsules without pollution to the environment.

Methods

In this work, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), sodium alginate (SA), and chitosan (CTS) were used as raw materials in acylation reaction with the photosensitive catalytic material iron octaaminophthalocyanine (T) to generate the photoactive bio-based materials T-CMC, T-SA, and T-CMCS. Cinnamaldehyde and 2-aminobenzimidazole were combined using chemical grafting to produce a new algicide, and then formed nanocapsules by phase separation. The molecular structure of products was characterized by UV-Vis, FTIR, and NMR (1H NMR, 13C NMR). The particle size of the nanocapsules was determined by Zeta particle size analysis and TEM; DSC was used to investigate the thermal stability; The encapsulation efficiency and sustained-release performance were determined by HPLC. Then the phytotoxic of the new algicide was measured.

Results

The bio-based nanocapsules was successfully synthesized, which had a particle size of 10-30 nm and was stable at 40 °C. The encapsulation efficiency of the nanocapsules was 48.77%, the cumulative release rate was 83%, and the new algicide killed the green algae in a dose-dependent way.

Conclusions

The bio-based nano capsule is a new and valuable Sustained-release capsule, which is the method of green algae.

Fabrication a controlled-release pesticide for improving UV-shielding properties and reducing toxicity via coating polydopamine

Controlled-release formulations (CRFs) have potential applications in modern agriculture, for it can not only prolong the duration of agrochemicals but also alleviate the adverse effect on non-target organism. In this study, we constructed pyraclostrobin@SiO₂@polydopamine microcapsule (Pyr@SiO₂@PDA MC). The resulting microcapsule is a near-rod shape (about 1.15 μm), which has a drug-loading efficiency of 55%. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) revealed the successful entrapment of the pesticide. The coating of polydopamine (PDA) endowing the microcapsule with superior UV-shielding properties than pyraclostrobin@SiO₂ microcapsule (Pyr@SiO₂ MC). Compared with pyraclostrobin emulsifiable concentrate (EC), the Pyr@SiO₂@PDA MC exhibited 9.07-, 5.50-, 4.93- and 4.16-fold higher fungicidal activity against Rice blast fungus (Pyricularia oryzae) at concentrations of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mg/L. Moreover, acute toxicity tests demonstrated that the sample on zebrafish with lower toxicity on the first day. These results showed that the obtained microcapsule may process broader application potential in agriculture.

Novel fabrication of a yeast biochar-based photothermal-responsive platform for controlled imidacloprid release

For improving the utilization efficiency of pesticides, we developed a novel pesticide delivery particle (YINCP@EC) with a core–shell structure based on yeast biochar, imidacloprid (IMI), ammonium bicarbonate (NH₄HCO₃), calcium alginate (CA), and ethyl cellulose (EC). Therein, yeast biochar, IMI and NH₄HCO₃ were absorbed in the network-structured of CA to obtain YINCP through hydrogen bonds. The resulting composite was granulated using an ion gelation technique and then coated with EC to form YINCP@EC. In this platform, yeast biochar serving as a photothermal agent can efficiently convert sunlight energy into thermal energy, thereby triggering NH₄HCO₃ decomposition into CO₂ and NH₃ that can break through the EC coating and facilitate IMI release. In addition, the influence of yeast biochar content, pH, and coexisting ions was systematically studied to evaluate the release behavior of IMI from YINCP@EC. Moreover, the hydrophobic EC shell endowed YINCP@EC with high stability in aqueous solution for at least 60 days. Consequently, this novel composite with simple preparation, low cost and remarkable photothermal-responsive properties has a huge application potential in agriculture.

The yeast biochar-based platform exhibited excellent photothermal conversion capability, and realized light-triggered controlled release of IMI.

Preparation and characterization of a novel controlled-release nano-delivery system loaded with pyraclostrobin via high-pressure homogenization

BACKGROUND

The development of efficient and safe green pesticides is a scientific strategy to alleviate current pesticide residues, environmental pollution, and threats to non-target organisms. Pesticide controlled-release formulations (CRFs) have attracted wide attention because they can control the rate of release of active ingredients and prolong the effective duration. In particular, nanoscale pesticide sustained-release systems have excellent biological activity and distribution performance because of their small particle size. Some technical difficulties remain in obtaining nanoscale CRFs.

RESULTS

We successfully fabricated pyraclostrobin nanosphere CRF by combining high-pressure homogenization technology and emulsion-solvent evaporation methods. The pyraclostrobin nanospheres had a uniform spherical shape with a mean particle size of 450 nm and polydispersity index of less than 0.3. The pyraclostrobin loading capacity reached 53.6%, with excellent storage stability. The contact angle of nanospheres on cucumber leaf surfaces demonstrated that it had good wettability. Compared with pyraclostrobin technical and commercial formulations, the nanosphere systems showed a significantly sustained release of pyraclostrobin for longer (up to 250 h). A preliminary bioassay against Penicillium ochrochloron showed that the bioactivity and long-term efficiency of pyraclostrobin nanospheres were superior to those of the commercial formulation.

CONCLUSION

This research introduced a simple, fast, expandable method for preparing pyraclostrobin nanospheres. The results showed that pyraclostrobin nanospheres could prolong the duration of pesticide efficacy and enhance bioactivity. Furthermore, this technology provides a platform for scale-up production of nano-scale pesticide CRFs. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Chitosan Oligosaccharide Fluorinated Derivative Control Root-Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) Disease Based on the Multi-Efficacy Strategy

Plant root-knot nematode disease is a great agricultural problem and commercially available nematicides have the disadvantages of high toxicity and limited usage; thus, it is urgent to develop new nematicides derived from nature substances. In this study, a novel fluorinated derivative was synthesized by modifying chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) using the strategy of multiple functions. The derivatives were characterized by FTIR, NMR, elemental analysis, and TG/DTG. The activity assays show that the derivatives can effectively kill the second instar larvae of Meloidogyne incognita in vitro, among them, chitosan-thiadiazole-trifluorobutene (COSSZFB) perform high eggs hatching inhibitory activity. The derivatives can regulate plant growth (photosynthetic pigment), improve immunity (chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase), and show low cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity. According to the multi-functional activity, the derivatives exhibit a good control effect on plant root-knot nematode disease in vivo. The results demonstrate that the COS derivatives (especially fluorinated derivative) perform multiple activities and show the potential to be further evaluated as nematicides.

Chitosan-Based Agronanochemicals as a Sustainable Alternative in Crop Protection

The rise in the World's food demand in line with the increase of the global population has resulted in calls for more research on the production of sustainable food and sustainable agriculture. A natural biopolymer, chitosan, coupled with nanotechnology could offer a sustainable alternative to the use of conventional agrochemicals towards a safer agriculture industry. Here, we review the potential of chitosan-based agronanochemicals as a sustainable alternative in crop protection against pests, diseases as well as plant growth promoters. Such effort offers better alternatives: (1) the existing agricultural active ingredients can be encapsulated into chitosan nanocarriers for the formation of potent biocides against plant pathogens and pests; (2) the controlled release properties and high bioavailability of the nanoformulations help in minimizing the wastage and leaching of the agrochemicals' active ingredients; (3) the small size, in the nanometer regime, enhances the penetration on the plant cell wall and cuticle, which in turn increases the argochemical uptake; (4) the encapsulation of agrochemicals in chitosan nanocarriers shields the toxic effect of the free agrochemicals on the plant, cells and DNA, thus, minimizing the negative impacts of agrochemical active ingredients on human health and environmental wellness. In addition, this article also briefly reviews the mechanism of action of chitosan against pathogens and the elicitations of plant immunity and defense response activities of chitosan-treated plants.

Chitosan-based delivery systems for plants: A brief overview of recent advances and future directions

Chitosan has been termed as the most well-known among biopolymers, receiving widespread attention from researchers in various fields mainly, agriculture, food, and health. Chitosan is a deacetylated derivative of chitin, mainly isolated from waste shells of the phylum Arthropoda after their consumption as food. Chitosan molecules can be easily modified for adsorption and slow release of plant growth regulators, herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers, etc. Chitosan as a carrier and control release matrix that offers many benefits including; protection of biomolecules from harsh environmental conditions such as pH, light, temperatures and prolonged release of active ingredients from its matrix consequently protecting the plant's cells from the hazardous effects of burst release. In the current review, tends to discuss the recent advances in the area of chitosan application as a control release system. Also, future recommendations will be made in light of current advancements and major gaps.

Advances in controlled release pesticide formulations: Prospects to safer integrated pest management and sustainable agriculture

As the world is striving hard towards sustainable agricultural practices for a better tomorrow, one of the primary focuses is on effective pest management for enhanced crop productivity. Despite newer and potent chemicals as pesticides, there are still substantial crop losses, and if by any means this loss can be tackled; it will alleviate unwanted excessive use of chemical pesticides. Scientific surveys have already established that pesticides are not being utilized by the crops completely rather a significant amount remains unused due to various limiting factors such as leaching and bioconversion, etc., resulting in an adverse effect on human health and ecosystems. Concerted efforts from scientific diaspora toward newer and innovative strategies are already showing promise, and one such viable approach is controlled release systems (CRS) of pesticides. Moreover, to bring these smart formulations within the domain of current pesticide regulatory framework is still under debate. It is thus, paramount to discuss the pros and cons of this new technology vis-à-vis the conventional agrarian methods. This review deliberates on the developmental updates in this innovative field from the past decades and also appraises the challenges encumbered. Additionally, critical information and the foreseeable research gaps in this emerging area are highlighted.

Water-soluble food dye of Allura Red as a tracer to determine the spray deposition of pesticide on target crops

BACKGROUND

Quantification of spray deposition on a target crop is of vital importance to optimize pesticide application. In traditional determinations of spray deposition, a large amount of organic solvent is used to extract pesticides from the target crops. In this study, a water-soluble food dye of Allura Red was developed as a tracer to determine pesticide spray deposition on a rice target crop.

RESULTS

The addition of Allura Red does not obviously alter the physicochemical properties of pesticides (viscosity, density and surface tension) and droplet spectra. An ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) analytical method was developed and validated to determine the deposition amount of Allura Red on rice plants. Method accuracy and precision for Allura Red were found to be satisfactory with recoveries of 96.07% to 107.48%. To validate the method, comparative deposition analyses were carried out using representative systematic and non-systematic pesticides (nitenpyram and chlorothalonil) under the same spraying scenarios using a Potter spray tower. Allura Red and pesticides showed comparable deposition under the same application conditions with ratios from 0.98 to 1.21. A field trial using an unmanned aerial vehicle sprayer further indicated that the deposition rates for Allura Red and nitenpyram on rice seedling were 13.04% and 11.07%, with corresponding relative standard deviation values (n = 5) of 16.39% and 18.79%.

CONCLUSION

A laboratory test and field trial confirmed that the developed method of using Allura Red as a tracer for spray deposition assessment is feasible and practicable. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Mesoporous activated carbon from starch for superior rapid pesticides removal

Pesticides contamination of water has caused considerable concern due to the potential hazard to human health. For the first time, mesoporous activated carbon from starch (ACS) was applied to remove pesticides from water. ACS could remove 11 pesticides rapidly (shake five times). The adsorption rates of ACS (>80%) for the 11 pesticides were higher than those of other adsorbents, including commercial activated carbon (AC), graphitised carbon black (GCB), C18, and primary secondary amine adsorbent (PSA). The mechanisms of the adsorption process for pyraclostrobin were also investigated. The pseudo-second-order model could better describe the adsorption for pyraclostrobin (R² = 0.99950). Langmuir model gave the best fit for the isotherm data (R² = 0.99899). Our findings demonstrate that oxygen-containing functional groups, N atom and π-bonding network of benzene promoted the adsorption. The adsorption efficiency of the ACS for 11 pesticides was still over 80% after five cycles.

Effect of adhesion force on the height pesticide droplets bounce on impaction with cabbage leaf surfaces

The relationship between adhesion force and the height drops containing difenoconazole-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DF-MSNs)/Tween 80 bounce on cabbage leaf surfaces was investigated as a function of Tween 80 concentration. The adhesion force of a pesticide droplet on cabbage leaf surfaces was assessed using a high-sensitivity microelectromechanical balance system and the impact behavior was recorded with a high-speed camera. The height droplets bounced decreased with increasing adhesion force, with a negative correlation between the height of the bouncing drops and adhesion force. Although droplets containing ≥0.06% Tween 80 adhered to the cabbage leaves, the retraction height was still observed to decrease as the adhesion force increased. The experimental results indicate that for cabbage leaf surfaces, the adhesion force has a significant effect on the height drops bounce. The results provide new insights into how researchers can screen for formulations for hydrophobic target crops and how to increase spray adhesion to difficult-to-wet crop leaf surfaces.

Chitosan-Based Nanofibrous Membrane Unit with Gradient Compositional and Structural Features for Mimicking Calcified Layer in Osteochondral Matrix

Chitosan (CH), silk fibroin (SF), and hydroxyapatite (HA) were used to prepare CH/SF/HA composites and the resulting composites were electrospun into nanofibrous membrane units with gradient compositional and structural features. The optimal membrane unit was used together with CH/HA and CH/SF composites to fabricate a type of three-layer scaffold that is intended for osteochondral repair. The bottom layer of the scaffold was built with CH/HA composites and it served as a subchondral layer, the integrated nanofibrous membrane unit functioned as the middle layer for mimicking the calcified layer and the top layer was constructed using CH/SF composites for acting as a chondral layer. The nanofibrous membrane unit was found to be permeable to some molecules with limited molecular weight and was able to prevent the seeded cells from migrating cross the unit, functioning approximately like the calcified layer in the osteochondral matrix. Layered scaffolds showed abilities to promote the growth of both chondrocytes and osteoblasts that were seeded in their chondral layer and bony layer, respectively, and they were also able to support the phenotype preservation of seeded chondrocytes and the mineralization of neotissue in the bony layer. Results suggest that this type of layered scaffolds can function as an analogue of the osteochondral matrix and it has potential in osteochondral repair.
