Abstract
In aqueous and solid media, 2-HP-β/γ-CD inclusion complexes with poly aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) Phenanthrene (PHN), Anthracene (ANT), Benz(a)pyrene (BaP), and Fluoranthene (FLT) were investigated for the first time. The inclusion complexes were characterized and investigated using fluorescence and 1HNMR spectroscopy. The most prevalent complexes consisting of both guests and hosts were those with a 1:1 guest-to-host ratio. The stability constants for the complexes of PHN with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were 85 ± 12 M-1 and 49 ± 29 M-1, respectively. Moreover, the stability constants were found to be 502 ± 46 M-1 and 289 ± 44 M-1 for the complexes of ANT with both hosts. The stability constants for the complexes of BaP with 2-HP-β-CD and 2-HP-γ-CD were (1.5 ± 0.02) × 103 M-1 and (9.41 ± 0.03) × 103 M-1, respectively. The stability constant for the complexes of FLT with 2-HP-β-CD was (1.06 ± 0.06) × 103 M-1. However, FLT was observed to form a weak complex with 2-HP-γ-CD. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations were used to investigate the mechanism and mode of inclusion processes, and to monitor the atomic-level stability of these complexes. The analysis of MD trajectories demonstrated that all guests formed stable inclusion complexes with both hosts throughout the duration of the simulation time, confirming the experimental findings. However, the flexible Hydroxypropyl arms prevented the PAHs from being encapsulated within the cavity; however, a stable exclusion complex was observed. The main forces that influenced the complexation included van der Waals interactions, hydrophobic forces, and C-H⋯π interaction, which contribute to the stability of these complexes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D3 (VD3) deficiency among children in Saudi Arabia remains a pressing concern due to its poor bioavailability and the limitations of current pediatric formulations. To address this challenge, we developed a groundbreaking pediatric self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (Bio-SNEDDS) for VD3, fortified with black seed oil and moringa seed oil for dual therapeutic benefits. Through meticulous formulation optimization using ternary phase diagrams and comprehensive testing, our Bio-SNEDDS demonstrated exceptional performance. METHODS Bio-SNEDDS were manufactured by incorporating Black seed oil and moringa seed oil as bioactive nutraceutical excipients along with various cosurfactant and surfactants. Bio-SNEDDS were systematically optimized through ternary phase diagrams, visual tests, droplet size analysis, drug solubilization studies, dispersion assessments, and pharmacokinetic testing in rats compared to Vi-De 3®. RESULTS Pseudoternary phase diagrams identified oil blends producing large nanoemulsion regions optimal for SNEDDS formation. The optimized F1 Bio-SNEDDS showed a mean droplet diameter of 33.7 nm, solubilized 154.46 mg/g VD3 with no metabolite formation, and maintained >88% VD3 in solution during 24 h dispersion testing. Notably, in vivo pharmacokinetic evaluation at a high VD3 dose demonstrated an approximately two-fold greater relative bioavailability over Vi-De 3®, validating the superb oral delivery performance of Bio-SNEDDS even under challenging high-dose conditions. CONCLUSIONS The Bio-SNEDDS provides an effective VD3 delivery strategy with established in vivo superiority over marketed products, along with offering additional health benefits from the natural oils.

Abstract
α-CD:N2O "host-guest" type complexes were formed by a simple solid-gas reaction (N2O sorption into α-CD) under different gas pressures and temperatures. The new N2O inclusion method applied in the present study was compared with the already known technique based on the crystallization of clathrates from a water solution of α-CD saturated with N2O. A maximum storage capacity of 4.5 wt.% N2O was achieved when charging the cyclodextrin from a gas phase. The amount of included gas decreases to 1.3 wt.% when the complex is stored in air at 1 atm and room temperature, analogous to that achieved by the crystallization of α-CD:N2O. Furthermore, it was shown that the external coordination of N2O to either the upper or lower rim of α-CD without hydration water displacement is the preferred mode of binding, due to hydrogen bonds with neighboring -OH groups from the host macrocycle and three of the hydration water molecules nearby. The capacity of α-CD to store N2O and the thermal stability of the α-CD:N2O complex demonstrated promising applications of these types of complexes in food and beverages.

Abstract
The transdermal delivery of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has the potential to overcome some of the major disadvantages relating to oral NSAID usage, such as gastrointestinal adverse events and compliance. However, the poor solubility of many of the newer NSAIDs creates challenges in incorporating the drugs into formulations suitable for application to skin and may limit transdermal permeation, particularly if the goal is therapeutic systemic drug concentrations. This review is an overview of the various strategies used to increase the solubility of poorly soluble NSAIDs and enhance their permeation through skin, such as the modification of the vehicle, the modification of or bypassing the barrier function of the skin, and using advanced nano-sized formulations. Furthermore, the simple yet highly versatile microemulsion system has been found to be a cost-effective and highly successful technology to deliver poorly water-soluble NSAIDs.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin (CD), a cyclic oligosaccharide from enzymatic starch breakdown, plays a crucial role in pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, textiles, biotechnology, chemicals, and environmental applications, including water and wastewater treatment. In this study, a statistical analysis was performed using VOSviewer and Citespace to scrutinize 2038 articles published from 1993 to 2022. The investigation unveiled a notable upsurge in pertinent articles and citation counts, with China and USA contributing the highest publication volumes. The prevailing research focus predominantly revolves around the application of CD-based materials used as adsorbents to remove conventional contaminants such as dyes and metals. The CD chemistry allows the construction of materials with various architectures, including cross-linked, grafted, hybrid or supported systems. The main adsorbents are cross-linked CD polymers, including nanosponges, fibres and hybrid composites. Additionally, research efforts are actually concentrated on the synthesis of CD-based membranes, CD@graphene oxide, and CD@TiO2. These materials are proposed as adsorbents to remove emerging pollutants. By employing bibliometric analysis, this study delivers a comprehensive retrospective review and synthesis of research concerning CD-based adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from wastewater, thereby offering valuable insights for future large-scale application of CD-based adsorption materials.

Abstract
Flavors are considered among the most important components of food formulations since they can predominantly affect the consumer acceptance and satisfaction. However, most flavors are highly volatile and inherently sensitive to pH, light, thermal processes, and chemical reactions such as oxidation and hydrolysis. Encapsulation is used as an effective strategy for protecting flavors from environmental conditions and extending their shelf life. Moreover, release characteristics of flavors can be modified via application of appropriate carriers and wall materials. This review focuses on the use of encapsulated flavors in various food products. Various factors affecting flavor retention during encapsulation, flavor release mechanisms, profiles and kinetics are discussed. Finally, the challenges associated with the use of encapsulated flavors in food products (in situ) and to model systems (in vitro), their storage stability, product requirements and problems related to the market are presented.

Abstract
Large-ring cyclodextrins (CDs) are a comparatively unexplored family of macrocycles. We use high-resolution 1H-13C HSQC NMR experiments to resolve the anomeric signals of at least 13 different size CDs in a mixture. Using a single titration experiment, we can quantify the individual binding capabilites of these structurally-related hosts, avoiding the need for cumbersome isolation.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin complexes loaded with venetoclax for improved solubility and therapeutic efficacy as repurposed drug. The venetoclax-cyclodextrin inclusion complex was prepared using kneading method. Primarily in-silico molecular docking study was performed to examine the possible interaction between venetoclax and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and extensively characterized. The in-vitro studies were performed using A-549 lung epithelial cancer cells. The in-vivo pharmaco-kinetic studies was performed on wistar rats. The aqueous solubility of venetoclax was increased upto 3.16 folds, as compared with pure venetoclax with entrapment efficiency (EE%) was determined 95.44 ± 0.3%. In-vitro cytotoxicity studies were carried on A-549 lung epithelial cancer cells, wherein BCL-2 receptors were highly over-expressed and IC 50 values for venetoclax and venetoclax- HP-β-CD complex was calculated at 24 and 48 hrs in the order of 1.241 µg/ml, 0.68 µg/ml and 0.757719 µg/ml, 0.6125 µg/mL, respectively. The oral bioavailability was increased 4.03 times compared to the pure drug. The venetoclax-HP-β-CD inclusion complexes showed the increased aqueous solubility with improved anticancer activities.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Recovering the bioactive components from pomegranate peel (PP) in the fruit-processing industry has attracted great attention in terms of minimizing the waste burden, as well as providing a new source of a multitude of functional compounds. The present study aimed to develop a feasible microencapsulation process of PP extract by using pectin and a pectin/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) blend as coating materials. Microsized powders obtained by a spray drying technique were examined in terms of technological characteristics, exhibiting high powder yield and desirable moisture content, flowability, and cohesive properties. Assuming that the interactions with the used biopolymers occur on the surface hydrophobic domain, their presence significantly improved the thermal stability of the microencapsulated powders up to 200 °C. The health-promoting effects of PP have been associated with its high content in ellagitannins, particularly punicalagin. The obtained PP powders exhibited strong antioxidant and hypoglycemic potential, while an antimicrobial assay revealed their potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, an in vitro release study suggested that the used biopolymers can modify the release of target bioactive compounds, thus establishing a basis for developing an oral-controlled release system. Altogether, biowaste valorization from PP by the production of effective multifunctional microsized powders represents a sustainable way to obtain novel nutraceuticals and/or pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Pterostilbene (PTS) is a naturally occurring phytoalexin. PTS displays limited water solubility, which consequently results in its diminished oral bioavailability. Therefore, a ternary inclusion complex (TIC) of PTS with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) in the presence of ternary substance Pluronic® F-127 (PLF) was prepared using microwave technology. The PTS-TIC was characterized by dissolution performance. Further, the prepared TIC was characterized by DSC, FTIR, NMR, XRD, and SEM analysis. Additionally, the antioxidant activity of PTS and PTS-TIC was also evaluated. Phase-solubility studies revealed that PTS's solubility in water was increased by 6.72 times when βCD/PLF was present. In comparison with PTS, prepared PTS-TIC produced a considerable improvement in PTS release. After 1 h, 74.03 ± 4.47% of PTS was released from PTS-TIC. Outcomes of DSC, FTIR, NMR, XRD, and SEM analysis revealed that the PTS was enclosed in the βCD cavity. In terms of antioxidant properties, the PTS-TIC formulation demonstrated superior activity compared to PTS, possibly attributed to the improved solubility of PTS resulting from the formation of TIC using microwave technology. It was concluded that microwave technology proved to be an extremely beneficial means of interacting PTS with βCD. In addition to increasing the solubility of PTS, the findings are also expected to improve its bioavailability by increasing its solubility. As a result, this study could provide insight into potential methods for enhancing the solubility of polyphenolic substances like PTS.

Abstract
Dairy protein hydrolysates possess a broad spectrum of bioactivity and hypoallergenic properties, as well as pronounced bitter taste. The bitterness is reduced by complexing the proteolysis products with cyclodextrins (CDs), and it is also important to study the bioactivity of the peptides in inclusion complexes. Hydrolysates of whey and colostrum proteins with extensive hydrolysis degree and their complexes with β/γ-CD were obtained in the present study, and comprehensive comparative analysis of the experimental samples was performed. The interaction of CD with peptides was confirmed via different methods. Bioactivity of the initial hydrolysates and their complexes were evaluated. Antioxidant activity (AOA) was determined by fluorescence reduction of fluorescein in the Fenton system. Antigenic properties were studied by competitive enzyme immunoassay. Antimutagenic effect was estimated in the Ames test. According to the experimental data, a 2.17/2.78-fold and 1.45/2.14-fold increase in the AOA was found in the β/γ-CD interaction with whey and colostrum hydrolysates, respectively. A 5.6/5.3-fold decrease in the antigenicity of whey peptides in complex with β/γ-CD was detected, while the antimutagenic effect in the host-guest systems was comparable to the initial hydrolysates. Thus, bioactive CD complexes with dairy peptides were obtained. Complexes are applicable as a component of specialized foods (sports, diet).

Abstract
Cyclodextrins have gained significant and established attention as versatile carriers for the delivery of bioactive compounds derived from natural sources in various applications, including medicine, food and cosmetics. Their toroidal structure and hydrophobic cavity render them ideal candidates for encapsulating and solubilizing hydrophobic and poorly soluble compounds. Most medicinal, food and cosmetic ingredients share the challenges of hydrophobicity and degradation that can be effectively addressed by various cyclodextrin types. Though not new or novel-their first applications appeared in the market in the 1970s-their versatility has inspired numerous developments, either on the academic or industrial level. This review article provides an overview of the ever-growing applications of cyclodextrins in the delivery of bioactive compounds from natural sources and their potential application benefits.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides that contain a relatively hydrophobic central cavity and a hydrophilic outer surface. They are widely used to form non-covalent inclusion complexes with many substances. Although such inclusion complexes typically exhibit higher aqueous solubility and chemical stability than pure drugs, it has been shown that CDs can promote the degradation of some drugs. This property of stabilizing certain drugs while destabilizing others can be explained by the type of CD used and the structure of the inclusion complex formed. In addition, the ability to form complexes of CDs can be improved through the addition of suitable auxiliary substances, forming multicomponent complexes. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effect that binary and multicomponent complexes have on the chemical and physical stability of complexed drugs. The objective of this review is to summarize the studies on the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of complexes with CDs on drugs that exhibit stability problems.

Abstract
Beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a cyclic oligosaccharide consisting of seven glucose units. β-CD is increasingly used in food research to reduce cholesterol due to its affinity for non-polar molecules such as cholesterol and as a natural additive. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of curd washing in ewe's milk cheese on the reduction in cholesterol by β-CD from pasteurized ewe's milk Manchego cheese and the characteristics of its main components: milk, lipids, and flavor. An approximately 98.45% cholesterol reduction was observed in washed experimental cheeses that were treated by using β-CD. The remaining residual β-CD from the effect of curd washing was 0.15% in mature cheese, of the initial 1% β-CD treatment of the milk. The chemical properties (fat, moisture, and protein) did not change as a result of the curd washing with or without β-CD. The curd washing with or without β-CD on the levels of the various lipid fraction (fatty acids, triglycerides, and phospholipids) were comparable in treated and untreated cheeses. The effects of curd washing and the β-CD treatment did not significantly affect flavor components or short chain free fatty acids. The β-CD molecules were edible and nontoxic; as a result, they could be used safely in cholesterol removal processing in cheese manufacturing, improving the reduction in residual β-CD by curd washing by 85%. Therefore, the present study suggests that curd washing combined with β-CD is an effective process for cholesterol removal in Manchego cheese, preserving its desirable properties.

Abstract
Cannabidiol (CBD) has a number of biological effects by acting on the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. CBD may be involved in anti-inflammatory processes via CB1 and CB2 receptors, resulting in a decrease of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, CBD's poor aqueous solubility is a major issue in pharmaceutical applications. The aim of the present study was to develop and evaluate a CBD nasal spray solution. A water-soluble CBD was prepared by complexation with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) at a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 and forming polymeric micelles using poloxamer 407. The mixture was then lyophilized and characterized using FT-IR, DSC, and TGA. CBD-β-CD complex-polymeric micelles were formulated for nasal spray drug delivery. The physicochemical properties of the CBD-β-CD complex-polymeric micelle nasal spray solution (CBD-β-CDPM-NS) were assessed. The results showed that the CBD content in the CBD-β-CD complex polymeric micelle powder was 102.1 ± 0.5%. The CBD-β-CDPM-NS was a clear colorless isotonic solution. The particle size, zeta potential, pH value, and viscosity were 111.9 ± 0.7 nm, 0.8 ± 0.1 mV, 6.02 ± 0.02, and 12.04 ± 2.64 cP, respectively. This formulation was stable over six months at ambient temperature. The CBD from CBD-β-CDPM-NS rapidly released to 100% within 1 min. Ex-vivo permeation studies of CBD-β-CDPM-NS through porcine nasal mucosa revealed a permeation rate of 4.8 μg/cm2/min, which indicated that CBD was effective in penetrating nasal epithelial cells. CBD-β-CDPM-NS was tested for its efficacy and safety in terms of cytokine production from nasal immune cells and toxicity to nasal epithelial cells. The CBD-β-CDPM-NS was not toxic to nasal epithelial at the concentration of CBD equivalent to 3.125-50 μg/mL. When the formulation was subjected to bioactivity testing against monocyte-like macrophage cells, it proved that the CBD-β-CDPM-NS has the potential to inhibit inflammatory cytokines. CBD-β-CDPM-NS demonstrated the formulation's ability to reduce the cytokine produced by S-RBD stimulation in ex vivo porcine nasal mucosa in both preventative and therapeutic modes.

Abstract
To produce muscle fibers for cultured meat on a large scale, it is important to expand myoblasts in a serum-reduced or serum-free medium to avoid cost, ethical, and environmental issues. Myoblasts such as C2C12 cells differentiate quickly into myotubes and lose their ability to proliferate when the serum-rich medium is replaced with a serum-reduced medium. This study demonstrates that Methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD), a starch-derived agent that depletes cholesterol, can inhibit further differentiation of myoblasts at the MyoD-positive stage by reducing plasma membrane cholesterol on C2C12 cells and primary cultured chick muscle cells. Furthermore, MβCD efficiently blocks cholesterol-dependent apoptotic cell death of myoblasts, which is one of the mechanisms by which it inhibits the differentiation of C2C12 myoblast cells, as dead cells of myoblast are necessary for the fusion of adjacent myoblasts during the differentiation process into myotubes. Importantly, MβCD maintains the proliferative capacity of myoblasts only under differentiation conditions with a serum-reduced medium, suggesting that its mitogenic effect is due to its inhibitory effect on myoblast differentiation into myotube. In conclusion, this study provides significant insights into ensuring the proliferative capacity of myoblasts in a future serum-free condition for cultured meat production.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins have received attention recently due to their superior binding with countless hydrophobic molecules. The host-guest interaction between the cyclodextrin cavity and the hydrophobic component not only facilitates the formation of a strong inclusion complex (IC), but also improves its stability against thermal degradation. The functionality of cyclodextrins for the delivery of hydrophilic components is less explored in comparison. This study discusses the application of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) for the delivery of highly bioavailable and hydrophilic iron, ferric sodium EDTA, which exhibits great functionality in the presence of polyphenols and phytates with potential application in food fortification. The formation of IC was dependent on the cyclodextrin amount and alcoholic co-solvent and was influenced by the stirring duration. For ferric sodium EDTA, the highest inclusion rate (IR) of ∼77% was obtained after 72 hours of mixing in 25.4% (v/v) alcohol at a ratio of iron : βCD of 1 : 6. A higher IR (∼96%) was obtained after 6 hours of stirring with less soluble ferrous ammonium phosphate in comparison. The melting temperature (Tm) of the ferrous ammonium phosphate complex increased from ∼172 to ∼294 °C. The high IR and enhanced thermal resistance of the complex make βCDs potential carriers for ferrous ammonium phosphate delivery and fortification of foods processed at high temperatures.

Abstract
L-Ascorbic acid (LAA) is a key vitamin, implicated in a variety of physiological processes in humans. Due to its free radical scavenging activity, it is extensively employed as an excipient in pharmaceutical products and food supplements. However, its application is greatly impeded by poor thermal and aqueous stability. Herein, to improve the stability and inhibit oxidative degradation, we prepared LAA-cyclodextrin inclusion complex-incorporated nanofibers (NFs). The continuous variation method (Job plot) demonstrated that LAA forms inclusions with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) at a 2:1 molar stoichiometric ratio. The NFs were prepared via the single step electrospinning technique, without using any polymer matrix. The solid-state characterizations of LAA/HP-β-CD-NF via powder x-ray diffractometry (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 2D-NOESY) spectroscopy, reveal the effective encapsulation of the LAA (guest molecule) inside the HP-β-CD (host) cavity. The SEM micrograph reveals an average fiber diameter of ~339 nm. The outcomes of the thermal investigations demonstrated that encapsulation of LAA within HP-β-CD cavities provides improved thermal stability of LAA (by increasing the thermal degradation temperature). The radical scavenging assay demonstrated the enhanced antioxidant potential of LAA/HP-β-CD-NF, as compared to native LAA. Overall, the study shows that cyclodextrin inclusion complex-incorporated NFs, are an effective approach for improving the limitations associated with LAA, and provide promising avenues in its therapeutic and food applications.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to exploit the antioxidant potential of molecules recovered during the pectin purification process of citrus lemon waste and to encapsulate them in stable pectin films, with a view to a green and circular economy process. Antioxidant molecules were recovered during the pectin purification process, further recovering matter from the waste. Seven molecules were identified and quantified, and the antioxidant power of the mixture and its stability over time was evaluated. To improve the stability of the bioactive fraction, this was complexed with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD); indeed, this procedure increased their thermal stability from 120 °C up to 250 °C, as verified by thermogravimetry. Furthermore, the most promising complexes were studied under autoclave-like conditions (120 °C, 28 min) to simulate thermal sterilization. The antioxidants and HP-β-CD were combined in a pectin film, showing increased stability over time (up to three times) compared to uncomplexed antioxidants. This process represents a first step towards the development of applicable devices for the delivery of antioxidant molecules.

Abstract
Citrus fruits have been the subject of extensive research over the years due to their impressive antioxidant properties, the health benefits of flavanones, and their potential use in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Grapefruit have been shown in studies to improve overall health, with numerous potential benefits, including improved heart health, reduced risk of certain cancers, improved digestive health, and improved immune system function. The development of cyclodextrin complexes is an exciting approach to increasing the content of flavanones such as naringin and naringenin in the extraction medium while improving the profile of beneficial phenolic compounds and the antioxidant profile. This research aims to optimize the extraction conditions of the flavanones naringin and naringenin with additional compounds to increase their yield from different parts of grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi L.) fruits, such as albedo and segmental membranes. In addition, the total content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and the antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts produced conventionally and with -cyclodextrin was examined and compared. In addition, antioxidant activity was measured using the radical scavenging activity assay (ABTS), radical scavenging activity assay (DPPH), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. The yield of naringin increased from 10.53 ± 0.52 mg/g to 45.56 ± 5.06 mg/g to 51.11 ± 7.63 mg/g of the segmental membrane when cyclodextrins (α, β-CD) were used; naringenin increased from 65.85 ± 10.96 μg/g to 91.19 ± 15.19 μg/g of the segmental membrane when cyclodextrins (α, β-CD) were used. Furthermore, the results showed that cyclodextrin-assisted extraction had a significant impact in significantly increasing the yield of flavanones from grapefruit. In addition, the process was more efficient and less expensive, resulting in higher yields of flavanones with a lower concentration of ethanol and effort. This shows that cyclodextrin-assisted extraction is an excellent method for extracting valuable compounds from grapefruit.

Abstract
Scents are volatile compounds highly employed in a wide range of manufactured items, such as fine perfumery, household products, and functional foods. One of the main directions of the research in this area aims to enhance the longevity of scents by designing efficient delivery systems to control the release rate of these volatile molecules and also increase their stability. Several approaches to release scents in a controlled manner have been developed in recent years. Thus, different controlled release systems have been prepared, including polymers, metal-organic frameworks and mechanically interlocked systems, among others. This review is focused on the preparation of different scaffolds to accomplish a slow release of scents, by pointing out examples reported in the last five years. In addition to discuss selected examples, a critical perspective on the state of the art of this research field is provided, comparing the different types of scent delivery systems.

Abstract
Host–guest assemblies open up opportunities for developing novel functional CLUSPOM multicomponent systems based on transition metal clusters (CLUS), polyoxometalates (POMs) and macrocyclic organic ligands. In water–ethanol solution γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) interacts with halide metal clusters [M6Cl14]2– (M = Mo, W) to form sandwich-type structures. The supramolecular association between the clusters and CDs, however, remains weak in solution, and the interactions are not strong enough to prevent the hydrolysis of the inorganic guest. Although analysis of the resulting crystal structures reveals inclusion complexation, 1H NMR experiments in solution show no specific affinity between the two components. The luminescent properties of the host–guest compounds in comparison with the initial cluster complexes are also studied to evaluate the influence of CD.

Abstract
Persistence and degradation are important factors in determining the safe use of such synthetic products, and numerous studies have been addressed to develop pesticide remediation methods aimed at ameliorating these features. In this frame, the use of different cyclodextrins (CDs) molecules has attracted considerable attention due to their well-known non-toxic nature, limited environmental impact, and capability to reduce the environmental and health risks of pesticides. CDs appear to be a valuable tool for the elimination of pesticides from polluted areas as well as for better pesticide formulations that positively influence their hydrolysis or degradation. The present work investigates the interaction between β-cyclodextrins and three commonly used pesticides (i.e., chlorpropham, monuron, and propanil) both in solution and in the solid state by means of UV-Vis, FT-IR, and X-ray powder diffractometry. We show that such interactions result in all three cases in the formation of inclusion complexes with a 1:1 stoichiometry and binding constants (Kb) of 369.9 M-1 for chlorpropham, 292.3 M-1 for monuron, and 298.3 M-1 for propanil. We also report the energy-minimized structures in silico for each complex. Our data expand and complement the available literature data in indicating CDs as a low-cost and very effective tool capable of modulating the properties that determine the environmental fate of pesticides.

Abstract
The emerging consciousness on nano- and microplastics in our environment raises questions on how to reduce and minimize its influence on human health. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) packaging is gaining popularity, and many traditional products end up in such packaging (vinegar, wine, beer). Currently, it is very hard to quantify the number of particles and their exact composition, but semi-quantitative techniques such as FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry) can give us an insight into the chemical composition of plastic bits in foods and beverages. Nowadays, beer is packed in PET packaging, since it provides a cheaper packaging material compared to glass and since it is safe to use at public manifestations, contrary to glass bottles, while providing a reasonable barrier for gas permeation (O2 and CO2). The aim of this paper was to provide a short overview of FT-IR-detected compounds in PET-packaged beer samples. The results indicate that many compounds can be found in beer, but those that were most commonly found in our research were β-cyclodextrin and L(-)-glyceraldehyde unnatural forms, two compounds designated as plastic-related compounds.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of essential oil medium on the inclusion complex of L. stoechas EO in β-cyclodextrin, as well as to examine the impact of the encapsulating action on the adulticidal activity. In line with this, L. stoechas EO was hydrodistilled and determined through GC-MS. Furthermore, the optimization of EO medium was conducted using a binary mixture design of ethanol and glycerol as green emulsifier solvent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis were used to verify the establishment of the IC. The insecticidal effect of the created formulation was evaluated against C. pipiens female mosquitoes. The optimum ethanol: glycerol ratio was 0.73: 0.27, corresponding to 58.86% of encapsulation efficiency. The fumigant test showed that, after 24 h of exposure, L. stoechas EO exerted only 24.56 ± 1.04%, while the encapsulated oil killed 57.89% of the adult population. At the highest dose (312.5 μl/L), the encapsulated oil provided the most significant effect on adults (100% mortality after 54 h) compared to non-encapsulated oil (100% mortality after 72 h). The encapsulated form of L. stoechas EO constitutes a promising alternative for the control of mosquitoes that are responsible for human diseases.

Abstract
The use of essential oils (EO) loaded with nanoparticles is the most promising alternative to increase food quality and safety. Interesting works describe the antimicrobial properties of EO for pathogen control in natural and processed foods for human health and animal production, also contributing to sustainability. Their association with different nanosystems allows novel developments in the micronutrition, health promotion, and pathogen control fields, preventing the aggravation of bacterial microevolution and combating antibiotic resistance. Benefits to the environment are also provided, as they are biodegradable and biocompatible. However, such compounds have some physicochemical properties that prevent commercial use. This review focuses on recent developments in antimicrobial EO-based nanoparticles and their application in different food matrices.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin-based polymers can be prepared starting from the naturally occurring monomers following green and low-cost procedures. They can be selectively derivatized pre- or post-polymerization allowing to fine-tune functionalities of ad hoc customized polymers. Preparation nowadays has reached the 100 g scale thanks also to the interest of industries in these extremely versatile compounds. During the last 15 years these macromolecules have been the object of intense investigations in view of possible biomedical applications as the ultimate goal and large amounts of scientific data are now available. Compared to their monomeric models, already used in the formulation of various therapeutic agents, they display superior behavior in terms of their solubility in water and solubilizing power towards drugs incompatible with biological fluids. Moreover, they allow the combination of more than one type of therapeutic agent in the polymeric system. In this review we provide a complete state-of-the-art on the knowledge and potentialities of water-soluble cyclodextrin-based polymers as therapeutic agents as well as carrier systems for different types of therapeutics to implement combination therapy. Finally, we give a perspective on their assets for innovation in disease treatment as well as their limits that still need to be addressed. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
Nanosponges are solid cross-linked polymeric nano-sized porous structures. This broad concept involves, among others, metal organic frameworks and hydrogels. The focus of this manuscript is on cyclodextrin-based nanosponges. Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligomers of glucose derived from starch. The combined external hydrophilicity with the internal hydrophobic surface constitute a unique “microenvironment”, that confers cyclodextrins the peculiar ability to form inclusion host‒guest complexes with many hydrophobic substances. These complexes may impart beneficial modifications of the properties of guest molecules such as solubility enhancement and stabilization of labile guests. These properties complemented with the possibility of using different crosslinkers and high polymeric surface, make these sponges highly suitable for a large range of applications. Despite that, in the last 2 decades, cyclodextrin-based nanosponges have been developed for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications, taking advantage of the nontoxicity of cyclodextrins towards humans. This paper provides a critical and timely compilation of the contributions involving cyclodextrins nanosponges for those areas, but also paves the way for other important applications, including water and soil remediation and catalysis.

Abstract
We report that the polymerization of cyclodextrin (CD) with epichlorohydrin (ECH) dramatically increases the binding constant of CD to vanillin, from 55 to 8.4 × 103 M-1, by approximately 100 times, as determined by diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY)-1H NMR. The binding constant increased with an increase of the ECH content of the polymer, although ECH polymers without CDs showed no affinity at all, suggesting that the hydrophobicity of the ECH network outside of CDs helps to enhance the binding. This increased binding constant allows CD-ECH polymers to increase the drug loading ratio, which may be one of the most critical issues for drug delivery systems.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a powerful tool for engineering functional materials that has the potential to transform textiles into high-performance, value-added products. In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the development of functional textiles using metal nanoparticles (MNPs). The incorporation of MNPs in textiles allows for the obtention of multifunctional properties, such as ultraviolet (UV) protection, self-cleaning, and electrical conductivity, as well as antimicrobial, antistatic, antiwrinkle, and flame retardant properties, without compromising the inherent characteristics of the textile. Environmental sustainability is also one of the main motivations in development and innovation in the textile industry. Thus, the synthesis of MNPs using ecofriendly sources, such as polysaccharides, is of high importance. The main functions of polysaccharides in these processes are the reduction and stabilization of MNPs, as well as the adhesion of MNPs onto fabrics. This review covers the major research attempts to obtain textiles with different functional properties using polysaccharides and MNPs. The main polysaccharides reported include chitosan, alginate, starch, cyclodextrins, and cellulose, with silver, zinc, copper, and titanium being the most explored MNPs. The potential applications of these functionalized textiles are also reported, and they include healthcare (wound dressing, drug release), protection (antimicrobial activity, UV protection, flame retardant), and environmental remediation (catalysts).

Abstract
In recent years, a lack of stability of dairy products with extended shelf life (e.g., yoghurt products, UHT desserts) has occurred, with the corresponding products liquefying significantly after days or weeks. This project aimed to identify the enzymes responsible for the liquefaction of the affected products based on differential proteomic analyses. No evidence was found for the presence of starch-degrading bacteria in the affected products. With zymography and proteome analysis, we detected the cause of liquefaction in a pudding by contamination of its aroma component with an engineered amylolytic enzyme, cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) from Thermoanaerobacterium thermosulfurigenes. In addition, we detected contamination with Pseudomonas-derived proteolytic ATP-dependent Clp protease in one pudding batch and proteases in technically used amylases, which degraded β-caseins in another batch. Identification of these agents with liquefying properties in dairy products are useful for adjustment of production protocols and/or composition of additives, and thus shelf life extension.

Abstract
(1) Background: New clean technologies are needed to reduce the high frying oil waste in the food industry of fried breaded products, together with the obtention of healthier (less fat content) and safer (less microbial growth and acrylamide formation) breaded products; (2) Methods: This study proposes the new technology consisting of incorporation of encapsulated extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) (α-cyclodextrin: EVOO ratio, 1:2.6) in the breadcrumbs (corn breadcrumbs:encapsulated oil ratio, 2:1) for breading chicken nuggets combined with oil-free pre-cooking (baking 150 °C/5 min) and cooking (baking 180 °C/13 min). As controls, a conventional deep-fat frying (180 °C/30 s) and new technology but without encapsulated EVOO were used; (3) Results: Fat content of baked chicken nuggets with the new technology was reduced by 88%, while no sensory differences were scored compared with conventional deep-fat frying. Furthermore, acrylamide formation was reduced by >55% with the new technology. During storage (4 °C) of pre-cooked chicken nuggets of new technology, microbial growth was reduced by 1.4 log units lower compared with deep-fat frying method; (4) Conclusions: the proposed new technology, based on encapsulated EVOO+oil-free pre-cooking/cooking, allows to obtain chicken nuggets that are healthier, safer, and have a longer shelf-life, while frying oil waste is avoided.

Abstract
In this study, Cinnamomum zelanicum essential oil was encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin and sodium caseinate (EO/BCD/Ca) and nanoemulsion was optained. In order to encapsulation of essential oil, different formulations of nanoemulsions containing essential oil were produced by ultrasound method and the effect of different polymers on the particle size and turbidity of the nanoemulsion was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques were used to study the structure and morphology of the produced nanoemulsions. Cinnamomum zelanicum essential oil encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin and sodium caseinate was used to modify porous cellulose plates (Cel/EO/BCD/Ca). Cellulose/encapsulated essential oil plates were used to package the walnut kernel to control oxidative changes during storage. The effect of packaging type (under vacuum and ordinal), plate type and storage time on quality control of walnut kernel and oil extracted from walnut kernel was investigated. The results showed that the particle size of essential oil, essential oil/β-cyclodextrin and essential oil/β-cyclodextrin/sodium caseinate were in the range of 84-85, 713-713 and 237-234 (nm), respectively. The encapsulation efficiency of both formulations was above 70%. Zeta potential was negative for essential oil/β-cyclodextrin/sodium caseinate samples and free essential oil samples. The effect of different polymers on the turbidity of emulsions was significant. The results of sensory evaluation of walnut kernel showed that the use of encapsulated essential oil compared to free essential oil caused the protection of color, taste and other quality characteristics during storage. Also, the essential oil encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin/sodium caseinate had a greater effect on quality control of walnut kernel and its oil than the essential oil encapsulated with β-cyclodextrin. Also, the quality characteristics of walnut kernels and walnut kernel oil packed in vacuum conditions were better than walnut kernels and walnut kernel oil packed in non-vacuum conditions during storage.

Abstract
Using cyclodextrins (CDs) in packaging technologies helps volatile or bioactive molecules improve their solubility, to guarantee the homogeneous distribution of the complexed molecules, protecting them from volatilization, oxidation, and temperature fluctuations when they are associated with polymeric matrices. This technology is also suitable for the controlled release of active substances and allows the exploration of their association with biodegradable polymer targeting to reduce the negative environmental impacts of food packaging. Here, we present a fresh look at the current status of and future prospects regarding the different strategies used to associate cyclodextrins and their derivatives with polymeric matrices to fabricate sustainable and biodegradable active food packaging (AFP). Particular attention is paid to the materials and the fabrication technologies available to date. In addition, the use of cutting-edge strategies, including the trend of nanotechnologies in active food packaging, is emphasized. Furthermore, a critical view on the risks to human health and the associated updated legislation is provided. Some of the more representative patents and commercial products that currently use AFP are also listed. Finally, the current and future research challenges which must be addressed are discussed.

Abstract
Toxicity caused by the exposure to human-made chemicals and environmental conditions has become a major health concern because they may significantly increase the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), negatively affecting the endogenous antioxidant defense. Living systems have evolved complex antioxidant mechanisms to protect cells from oxidative conditions. Although oxidative stress contributes to various pathologies, the intake of molecules such as polyphenols, obtained from natural sources, may limit their effects because of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties against lipid peroxidation and against a broad range of foodborne pathogens. Ingestion of polyphenol-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, help to reduce the harmful effects of ROS, but the use of supramolecular and nanomaterials as delivery systems has emerged as an efficient method to improve their pharmacological and therapeutic effects. Suitable exogenous polyphenolic antioxidants should be readily absorbed and delivered to sites where pathological oxidative damage may take place, for instance, intracellular locations. Many potential antioxidants have a poor bioavailability, but they can be encapsulated to improve their ideal solubility and permeability profile. Development of effective antioxidant strategies requires the creation of new nanoscale drug delivery systems to significantly reduce oxidative stress. In this review we provide an overview of the oxidative stress process, highlight some properties of ROS, and discuss the role of natural polyphenols as bioactives in controlling the overproduction of ROS and bacterial and fungal growth, paying special attention to their encapsulation in suitable delivery systems and to their location in colloidal systems where interfaces play a crucial role.

Abstract
The selective synthesis of active pharmaceutical molecules is a challenging issue, particularly when attempting to make the reactions even more sustainable. The present work focuses on the microwave-assisted hydrogenolysis of oxytetracycline to selectively produce α-doxycycline. Although the combination of microwave irradiation and a heterogeneous rhodium catalyst provided good conversions, the selective synthesis of active α-doxycycline was only achieved when an oxytetracycline-cyclodextrin complex was used as the starting material, giving the desired product at 34.0% yield in a one-step reaction under very mild conditions.

Abstract
Although it has been exploited since the late 1900s to study hybrid perovskite materials, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has only recently received extraordinary research attention in this field. This very powerful technique allows the study of the physico-chemical and structural properties of molecules by observing the quantum mechanical magnetic properties of an atomic nucleus, in solution as well as in solid state. Its versatility makes it a promising technique either for the atomic and molecular characterization of perovskite precursors in colloidal solution or for the study of the geometry and phase transitions of the obtained perovskite crystals, commonly used as a reference material compared with thin films prepared for applications in optoelectronic devices. This review will explore beyond the current focus on the stability of perovskites (3D in bulk and nanocrystals) investigated via NMR spectroscopy, in order to highlight the chemical flexibility of perovskites and the role of interactions for thermodynamic and moisture stabilization. The exceptional potential of the vast NMR tool set in perovskite structural characterization will be discussed, aimed at choosing the most stable material for optoelectronic applications. The concept of a double-sided characterization in solution and in solid state, in which the organic and inorganic structural components provide unique interactions with each other and with the external components (solvents, additives, etc.), for material solutions processed in thin films, denotes a significant contemporary target.
