Abstract
Chronic hemorrhagic anemia (CHA) and anemia of chronic inflammation (ACI) are difficult to differentiate in small animals using hematology. Advanced hematological parameters (RET-He, Delta-He and %Hypo-He) are used in humans to discriminate between types of non-regenerative anemia. Whether they could be useful in the diagnosis of CHA and ACI in small animals is unknown. We evaluated these parameters in the Sysmex XN-1000V analyzer in a population of non-anemic and anemic dogs and cats. Delta-He was significantly different between dogs with CHA and ACI. Moreover, Delta-He and RET-He were different between healthy and non-anemic dogs with inflammation. Neither of these two statements was true for cats. We also report the reference ranges for these parameters using the Sysmex XN-1000V. Although additional clinical and laboratory information should always be considered, the measurement of these parameters using this analyzer can help clinicians to classify type of anemia.

Abstract
In 2019, 1.74 billion people worldwide had anemia. In Nigeria, women of reproductive age are the most affected. Domestic violence affects the anemia prevalence, but few studies have examined the influence of urbanization on women in heterosexual unions (currently married, and cohabiting between). Using the social determinants of health framework, we argue that food-based violence and anemia vary among women residing in rural and urban areas. We used the Chi-square test and logistic regression to analyze the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey records (n = 10,499). The study showed that anemia occurs more among women in rural (66%) than in urban (34%) areas. In rural areas, anemia was 29% higher among women who approved food-based domestic violence (OR: 1.29, CI 1.15-1.57) than those who did not. In urban areas, food-based domestic violence was not significantly associated with anemia. This study emphasizes the urgent need for culturally sensitive maternal health interventions aimed at re-orienting individuals and families on violence in rural areas.

Abstract
PURPOSE Age-related hearing loss is the most common form of permanent hearing loss that is associated with various health traits, including Alzheimer's disease, cognitive decline, and depression. The present study aims to identify genetic comorbidities of age-related hearing loss. Past genome-wide association studies identified multiple genomic loci involved in common adult-onset health traits. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) could summarize the polygenic inheritance and quantify the genetic susceptibility of complex traits independent of trait expression. The present study conducted a PRS-based association analysis of age-related hearing difficulty in the UK Biobank sample (N = 425,240), followed by a replication analysis using hearing thresholds (HTs) and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in 242 young adults with self-reported normal hearing. We hypothesized that young adults with genetic comorbidities associated with age-related hearing difficulty would exhibit subclinical decline in HTs and DPOAEs in both ears. METHODS A total of 111,243 participants reported age-related hearing difficulty in the UK Biobank sample (> 40 years). The PRS models were derived from the polygenic risk score catalog to obtain 2627 PRS predictors across the health spectrum. HTs (0.25-16 kHz) and DPOAEs (1-16 kHz, L1/L2 = 65/55 dB SPL, F2/F1 = 1.22) were measured on 242 young adults. Saliva-derived DNA samples were subjected to low-pass whole genome sequencing, followed by genome-wide imputation and PRS calculation. The logistic regression analyses were performed to identify PRS predictors of age-related hearing difficulty in the UK Biobank cohort. The linear mixed model analyses were performed to identify PRS predictors of HTs and DPOAEs. RESULTS The PRS-based association analysis identified 977 PRS predictors across the health spectrum associated with age-related hearing difficulty. Hearing difficulty and hearing aid use PRS predictors revealed the strongest association with the age-related hearing difficulty phenotype. Youth with a higher genetic predisposition to hearing difficulty revealed a subclinical elevation in HTs and a decline in DPOAEs in both ears. PRS predictors associated with age-related hearing difficulty were enriched for mental health, lifestyle, metabolic, sleep, reproductive, digestive, respiratory, hematopoietic, and immune traits. Fifty PRS predictors belonging to various trait categories were replicated for HTs and DPOAEs in both ears. CONCLUSION The study identified genetic comorbidities associated with age-related hearing loss across the health spectrum. Youth with a high genetic predisposition to age-related hearing difficulty and other related complex traits could exhibit sub-clinical decline in HTs and DPOAEs decades before clinically meaningful age-related hearing loss is observed. We posit that effective communication of genetic risk, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and reducing exposure to environmental risk factors at younger ages could help prevent or delay the onset of age-related hearing difficulty at older ages.

Abstract
Animal models have suggested the carcinogenic effect of iron due to its oxidative potential. The lung is particularly vulnerable to oxidative stress. However, epidemiological studies investigating the association between dietary iron and the risk of lung cancer have reported inconclusive results. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to clarify this association. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Google scholar for eligible articles published through May 2023 reporting the Relative Risk (RR), Hazard Ratio (HR) or Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Case-control and cohort studies that examined the relationship between dietary iron and lung cancer risk were included and review and meta-analyses articles, experimental studies, abstracts, letters to editor and studies with insufficient data were excluded. Finally, three case-control studies and 6 cohort studies were included. Random effect models were used to calculate the pooled results. Results: Nine studies (cases n=21,943, participants n=1,542,993) were included. There were no significant associations between the highest dietary total iron (heme and non-heme) (RR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.78 to 1.51) or heme iron (RR: 1.01, 95% CI: 0.73 to 1.38) intake compared to the lowest intake with lung cancer risk. Null-associations were also observed in the subgroup analysis based on smoking status and lung cancer histology. However, in the subgroup of women (cases n=5074), heme iron was associated with a 14% increase in the risk of lung cancer (RR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.29). Conclusions: The current results demonstrated that there is no significant relationship between dietary iron intake and the risk of lung cancer. However, a positive association was observed between dietary heme iron and the risk of lung cancer in women, which may require further investigation.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of solarium light therapy on selected biological and biochemical parameters of peripheral blood in recreational horses. The study involved 10 horses divided into two groups of young (aged 5 to 7 years) and old (aged 14 to 19 years) individuals. All animals participated in light therapy sessions every other day. Blood was sampled three times during the study: before the treatment, after five light sessions, and after ten light sessions. Morphological parameters, the activity of antioxidant enzymes, TAS values, and the levels of glutathione (GSH), vitamin D3, vitamin C, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in the whole blood. Light therapy contributed to an increase in MCV, HDW, MCVr, CHr and MPV indices, and simultaneously a decrease in the basophil counts, MCHC, RDW and CHCMr indices in both groups of horses (p ≤ 0.05). At the same time reticulocytes fell in older whereas white blood cells and monocytes counts expanded in younger individuals. The treatment also increased the activity of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in young but decreased the activity of mentioned enzymes in blood plasma of old horses. The total antioxidant status (TAS) of the blood plasma rose progressively, whereas GSH levels declined in all individuals. Moreover, vitamin D3 levels did not change, whereas vitamin C levels gradually decreased during the experiment. The therapy also helped to reduce levels of MDA in the blood plasma, especially of older horses (p ≤ 0.05). In turn, GPx and GR activities as well as MDA levels significantly declined, whereas GSH levels notably elevated in erythrocytes (p ≤ 0.05). Solarium light therapy appears to have a beneficial impact on the morphological parameters and antioxidant status of blood in recreational horses in the winter season. However, the observed results could in part be attributed to the natural physiological adaptation of each individual organism to the treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Detection of iron deficiency (ID) remains challenging. We aimed to evaluate the performance of reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) as a potential diagnostic marker to assess ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in a large pediatric cohort. METHODS A total of 3158 patients (aged 15 days to 19 years with a median age of 8.5 years; 60.2% female) were retrospectively studied. Statistical analysis was performed (a) to evaluate relationship of Ret-He with other relevant complete blood count and iron panel parameters; (b) to compare the levels of Ret-He in ID and IDA groups to a control group; and (c) to assess sensitivity and specificity of Ret-He in ID, IDA, and anemia without ID groups. RESULTS Ret-He values were significantly positively correlated to ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT). The median Ret-He was significantly lower in ID. A Ret-He cutoff of ≤30.0 pg distinguished cases of ID from the control group with a sensitivity of 90.2%, specificity of 59.5%, and area under curve (AUC) of 0.88. Ret-He showed better diagnostic performance in the IDA group and acceptable performance for ID without anemia. The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC were 90.1%, 80.9%, and 0.93 for IDA at cutoff value of ≤27.4 pg, and 80.8%, 51.1%, and 0.70 for ID without anemia at cutoff value of ≤30.8 pg, respectively. CONCLUSION Our large pediatric tertiary care hospital study demonstrates that Ret-He is a reliable marker to help confirm IDA in pediatric population. However, further studies are needed for its use to capture the early stages of ID.

Abstract
Anemia remains an essential concern affecting the quality of life and the survival of cancer patients. Although there are different approaches to treating anemia in cancer patients, the number of studies reporting the efficacy of iron replacement in cancer patients is limited. In this study, the efficacy and safety of iron carboxymaltose, a parenteral iron treatment option, in the treatment of anemia, were examined retrospectively. A total of 1102 adult patients who received IV ferric carboxymaltose treatment at Hacettepe Oncology Hospital between 2014 and 2020 were included. The mean hemoglobin change observed at the end of the 12th week was 1.8 g/dL, and the rate of patients with an increase in hemoglobin of 1 g/dL or more was 72.1%. It was observed that the treatment demonstrated effectiveness in patients receiving active cancer treatment in all tumor types. The treatment was generally safe, and no grade 3-5 side effects were observed in the patients included in the study. According to one of the most extensive series published in the literature, iron carboxymaltose is an efficient and safe alternative for cancer patients with iron-deficiency anemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin B12 (cobalamin CBL) is a water-soluble vitamin required to form hematopoietic cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). It is involved in the process of synthesizing DNA and myelin sheath. Deficiencies of vitamin B12 and/or folate can cause megaloblastic anemia (macrocytic anemia with other features due to impaired cell division). Pancytopenia is a less frequent exordium of severe vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause neuropsychiatric findings. In addition to correcting the deficiency, an essential aspect of management is determining the underlying cause because the need for additional testing, the duration of therapy, and the route of administration may differ depending on the underlying cause. METHODS Here, we present a series of four patients hospitalized for megaloblastic anemia (MA) in pancytopenia. All patients diagnosed with MA were studied for a clinic-hematological and etiological profile. RESULTS All the patients presented with pancytopenia and megaloblastic anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency was documented in 100% of cases. There was no correlation between the severity of anemia and deficiency of the vitamin. Overt clinical neuropathy was present in none of the cases of MA, while subclinical neuropathy was seen in one case. The etiology of vitamin B12 deficiency was pernicious anemia in two cases and low food intake in the remaining cases. CONCLUSION This case study emphasizes the role of vitamin B12 deficiency as a leading cause of pancytopenia among adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common in critically ill patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), and it can lead to severe consequences. Precise and immediate diagnostics are not available, but they are inevitably needed to administer adequate therapy. Serological parameters such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) are heavily influenced by simultaneous inflammation reactions, resulting in the need for more suitable parameters. Reticulocyte biomarkers such as reticulocyte hemoglobin content (RET-He) and Delta-hemoglobin equivalent (Delta-He) determined by fluorescence flowcytometry are more specific for the diagnosis of IDA-based anemia and should be investigated for this purpose. METHODS In a prospective cohort single-center study, serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) were collected and compared to RET-He and Delta-He by performing a receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis. The sensitivity and specificity of a single variable or the combination of two variables, as well as cutoff values, for the diagnosis of IDA were calculated. A group comparison for IDA patients without IDA was performed for a control group. RESULTS A total of 314 patients were enrolled from an interdisciplinary ICU. RET-He (area under the curve (AUC) 0.847) and Delta-He (AUC 0.807) did indicate iron-deficient anemia that was more specific and sensitive in comparison to serum ferritin (AUC 0.678) and TSAT (AUC 0.754). The detection of functional iron deficiency (FID) occurred in 28.3% of cases with anemia. CONCLUSIONS Determination of RET-He and Delta-He allows for the increased precision and sensitivity of iron-deficient anemia in the ICU.

Abstract
Introduction. The concept of blood management in relation to the surgical treatment of surgical diseases recommends the correction of iron defi ciency anemia (IDA) at the prehospital stage. However, surgery is often performed for emergency indications, making it necessary to carry out treatment as soon as possible.Aim – to evaluate the possibilities of using delta hemoglobin (Delta-He) to monitor the effectiveness of IDA therapy in neurosurgical patients at the prehospital stage to reduce the time required to prepare patients for hospitalization.Materials and methods. A total of 42 patients were treated with high-dose iron preparations (iron [III] carboxymaltosate and iron [III] hydroxide oligoisomaltosate). During the treatment, the dynamics of the number of reticulocytes and the values of the hemoglobin delta were evaluated. Data are presented as median (IQR).Results. Treatment with high-dose iron preparations led to an increase in Delta-He values starting from days 1–2. Significant changes were recorded by days 3–4 from the start of therapy: from 2.2 (0.3–4.9) pg to 15.5 (13.8–10) pg on day 7. These changes were 2–3 days ahead of the increase in the number of reticulocytes in the corresponding blood samples: the number of reticulocytes significantly increased by days 5–6 from the start of treatment.Conclusion. The use of high-dose preparations of iron [III] carboxymaltosate and iron [III] hydroxide oligoisomaltosate in the form of infusion made it possible to prepare neurosurgical patients for hospitalization within a week. None of the patients required transfusion of erythrocyte-containing components of donated blood at any stage of surgical treatment. The ability to focus on Delta-He values instead of the number of reticulocytes during iron therapy made it possible to shorten the waiting period for the effect of drug exposure by 2–3 days.

Abstract
Although peripheral blood reticulocyte enumeration reflects bone marrow functional integrity, which is important for differential diagnosis of hematological diseases, the factors affecting its accuracy have not been adequately addressed. Using 100 consecutive venous blood samples being processed with four supravital staining techniques [i.e., brilliant cresyl blue (BCB), new methylene blue (NMB), and BCB/NMB with Liu’s stain] for reticulocyte enumeration, two technologists (senior vs. junior) conducted microscopic counting. The results were compared with those obtained with an automated system (Sysmex XE-5000) that served as the standard. The aims of this study were to identify (1) the technique that gave the most reliable outcome, and (2) possible human factors (i.e., seniority, repeated counting) that may affect the counting results. Analysis showed least bias (i.e., deviation from automated counting) associated with BCB staining, followed by NMB. In addition, the senior observer exhibited a higher bias in counting compared with their junior counterpart. Repeated counting also correlated with a higher rate of bias. Nevertheless, inter-observer consistency was high (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.95) and inter-/intra-observer variations were non-significant (both p > 0.05). Our results supported the use of BCB stain for reticulocyte enumeration and the reliability of manual counting despite the involvement of human factors, which had negligible impacts on the final outcomes.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has reached epidemic proportions in developing countries and has become a major global public health problem, affecting mainly 0–5-year-old children and young women of childbearing age, especially during pregnancy. Iron deficiency can lead to life-threatening loss of red blood cells, muscle function, and energy production. Therefore, the pathogenic features associated with IDA are weakness and impaired growth, motor, and cognitive performance. IDA affects the well-being of the young generation and the economic advancement of developing countries, such as India. The imbalance between iron intake/absorption/storage and iron utilization/loss culminates into IDA. However, numerous strategic programs aimed to increase iron intake have shown that improvement of iron intake alone has not been sufficient to mitigate IDA. Emerging critical risk factors for IDA include a composition of cultural diets, infections, genetics, inflammatory conditions, metabolic diseases, dysbiosis, and socioeconomic parameters. In this review, we discuss numerous IDA mitigation programs in India and their limitations. The new multifactorial mechanism of IDA pathogenesis opens perspectives for the improvement of mitigation programs and relief of IDA in India and worldwide.
