Recent Advances in High-Throughput Nanomaterial Manufacturing for Hybrid Flexible Bioelectronics

A snapshot review on materials enabled multimodal bioelectronics for neurological and cardiac research

Seamless integration of the body and electronics toward the understanding, quantification, and control of disease states remains one of the grand scientific challenges of this era. As such, research efforts have been dedicated to developing bioelectronic devices for chemical, mechanical, and electrical sensing, and cellular and tissue functionality modulation. The technologies developed to achieve these capabilities cross a wide range of materials and scale (and dimensionality), e.g., from micrometer to centimeters (from 2-dimensional (2D) to 3-dimensional (3D) assemblies). The integration into multimodal systems which allow greater insight and control into intrinsically multifaceted biological systems requires careful design and selection. This snapshot review will highlight the state-of-the-art in cellular recording and modulation as well as the material considerations for the design and manufacturing of devices integrating their capabilities.

Lab-made flexible third-generation fructose biosensors based on 0D-nanostructured transducers

Herein, we report a scalable benchtop electrode fabrication method to produce highly sensitive and flexible third-generation fructose dehydrogenase amperometric biosensors based on water-dispersed 0D-nanomaterials. The electrochemical platform was fabricated via Stencil-Printing (StPE) and insulated via xurography. Carbon black (CB) and mesoporous carbon (MS) were employed as 0D-nanomaterials promoting an efficient direct electron transfer (DET) between fructose dehydrogenase (FDH) and the transducer. Both nanomaterials were prepared in water-phase via a sonochemical approach. The nano-StPE exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic currents compared to conventional commercial electrodes. The enzymatic sensors were exploited for the determination of D-fructose in model solutions and various food and biological samples. StPE-CB and StPE-MS integrated biosensors showed appreciable sensitivity (∼150 μA cm-2 mM-1) with μmolar limit of detection (0.35 and 0.16 μM, respectively) and extended linear range (2-500 and 1-250 μM, respectively); the selectivity of the biosensors, ensured by the low working overpotential (+0.15 V), has been also demonstrated. Good accuracy (recoveries between 95 and 116%) and reproducibility (RSD ≤8.6%) were achieved for food and urine samples. The proposed approach because of manufacturing versatility and the electro-catalytic features of the water-nanostructured 0D-NMs opens new paths for affordable and customizable FDH-based bioelectronics.

Multi-Geometry Parameters Optimization of Large-Area Roll-to-Roll Nanoimprint Module Using Grey Relational Analysis and Artificial Neural Network

Micro- and nanofabrication on polymer substrate is integral to the development of flexible electronic devices, including touch screens, transparent conductive electrodes, organic photovoltaics, batteries, and wearable devices. The demand for flexible and wearable devices has spurred interest in large-area, high-throughput production methods. Roll-to-roll (R2R) nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is a promising technique for producing nano-scale patterns rapidly and continuously. However, bending in a large-scale R2R system can result in non-uniform force distribution during the imprinting process, which reduces pattern quality. This study investigates the effects of R2R imprinting module geometry parameters on force distribution via simulation, using grey relational analysis to identify optimal parameter levels and ANOVA to determine the percentage of each parameter contribution. The study also investigates the length and force ratio on a backup roller used for bending compensation. The simulation results and the artificial neural network (ANN) model enable the prediction of nip pressure and force distribution non-uniformity along the roller, allowing the selection of the optimal roller geometry and force ratio for minimal non-uniformity on a specific R2R system. An experiment was conducted to validate the simulation results and ANN model.

Soft wireless sternal patch to detect systemic vasoconstriction using photoplethysmography

Vasoconstriction is a crucial physiological process that serves as the body's primary blood pressure regulation mechanism and a key marker of numerous harmful health conditions. The ability to detect vasoconstriction in real time would be crucial for detecting blood pressure, identifying sympathetic arousals, characterizing patient wellbeing, detecting sickle cell anemia attacks early, and identifying complications caused by hypertension medications. However, vasoconstriction manifests weakly in traditional photoplethysmogram (PPG) measurement locations, like the finger, toe, and ear. Here, we report a wireless, fully integrated, soft sternal patch to capture PPG signals from the sternum, an anatomical region that exhibits a robust vasoconstrictive response. With healthy controls, the device is highly capable of detecting vasoconstriction induced endogenously and exogenously. Furthermore, in overnight trials with patients with sleep apnea, the device shows a high agreement (r² = 0.74) in vasoconstriction detection with a commercial system, demonstrating its potential use in portable, continuous, long-term vasoconstriction monitoring.

Wearable potentiometric biosensor for analysis of urea in sweat

Herein, we introduce wearable potentiometric biosensors on screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) for on-body and on-site monitoring of urea in sweat. The biosensor architecture was judiciously designed to detect urea at different pHs and incorporate a pH sensor, thus containing polyaniline ink, urease bioink and a polyvinylchloride membrane. Urea detection could be performed in the wide range from 5 to 200 mM at pH 7.0, encompassing urea levels in human sweat. The biosensor response was fast (incubation time 5 min), with no interference from other substances in sweat. Reliable urea detection could be done in undiluted human sweat with a skin-worn flexible device using the pH correction strategy afforded by the pH sensor. The performance of the epidermal biosensor was not affected by severe bending strains. The feasibility of mass production was demonstrated by fabricating epidermal flexible biosensors using slot-die coating with a roll-to-roll technique.

Surface Modification and Properties of Thin Ink Films with Added TiO2 and ZnO Nanoparticles Applied on Paperboard Substrates

In this study, the surface modification of thin ink films with added nanoparticles was used to improve the functional properties of ink applied on paperboard substrates. The surface modification was performed by additional exposure of the samples to xenon radiation. Anatase TiO₂, rutile TiO₂ and ZnO were added to the base ink. The effect of surface modification on the surface, structural, and mechanical properties of the printed ink films was determined by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, calculating the surface free energy and adhesion parameters, performing the rub resistance test of the printed samples, and by measuring the resistance to bending. Color measurements on the ink films were performed in order to observe the optical properties of unmodified and modified samples. The results showed that surface modification significantly improved the adhesion properties of the thin ink films and the mechanical properties of the samples. The results obtained on uncoated and coated paperboard showed that the addition of rutile TiO₂ and ZnO nanoparticles had the greatest effect on the rub resistance of the ink films. The results of the color analysis showed that the addition of nanoparticles did not change the optical properties of the modified ink films and that rutile TiO₂ and ZnO nanoparticles improved the lightfastness of the applied ink films.

Recent Advances in Materials and Flexible Sensors for Arrhythmia Detection

Arrhythmias are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and their early detection is essential for patient wellness. However, traditional arrhythmia diagnosis by expert evaluation from intermittent clinical examinations is time-consuming and often lacks quantitative data. Modern wearable sensors and machine learning algorithms have attempted to alleviate this problem by providing continuous monitoring and real-time arrhythmia detection. However, current devices are still largely limited by the fundamental mismatch between skin and sensor, giving way to motion artifacts. Additionally, the desirable qualities of flexibility, robustness, breathability, adhesiveness, stretchability, and durability cannot all be met at once. Flexible sensors have improved upon the current clinical arrhythmia detection methods by following the topography of skin and reducing the natural interface mismatch between cardiac monitoring sensors and human skin. Flexible bioelectric, optoelectronic, ultrasonic, and mechanoelectrical sensors have been demonstrated to provide essential information about heart-rate variability, which is crucial in detecting and classifying arrhythmias. In this review, we analyze the current trends in flexible wearable sensors for cardiac monitoring and the efficacy of these devices for arrhythmia detection.

Gel-Based Luminescent Conductive Materials and Their Applications in Biosensors and Bioelectronics

The gel is an ideal platform for fabricating materials for bio-related applications due to its good biocompatibility, adjustable mechanical strength, and flexible and diversified functionalization. In recent decades, gel-based luminescent conductive materials that possess additional luminescence and conductivity simultaneously advanced applications in biosensors and bioelectronics. Herein, a comprehensive overview of gel-based luminescent conductive materials is summarized in this review. Gel-based luminescent conductive materials are firstly outlined, highlighting their fabrication methods, network structures, and functions. Then, their applications in biosensors and bioelectronics fields are illustrated. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of this emerging field are discussed with the hope of inspire additional ideas.
