Abstract
In the cultivation and production of sweet cherry, the cost of picking fruit is high due to inconsistency in the maturation period, which has affected the development of the cherry industry. In this study, the effects of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) on the sweet cherry variety 'Luying 3' fruit quality and maturation stage were observed and recorded, and the physiological and molecular mechanisms were explored to systematically analyze the effects of ABA on sweet cherry fruit ripening to promote the development of the cherry industry. Exogenous ABA (400 mg L-1) enhanced the color of 'Luying 3' fruit in the developing stage but had no significant effect on the fruit weight, soluble solid content, titratable acid content, and sugar-acid ratio in the mature stage. The application of ABA significantly promoted the secretion of endogenous ABA, gibberellin (GA) and salicylic acid (SA). A total of 766 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained between the treatment group and the control group at 47 and 54 d after flowering. The DEGs were significantly enriched in plant hormone signal transduction pathway, MAPK plant signal transduction pathway and glycolysis pathway. Six genes related to the synthesis of endogenous hormones were screened, of which five were upregulated and one was downregulated. Four DEGs related to the sweet cherry fruit metabolic rate were upregulated by ABA, which positively regulated fruit ripening. Eight differentially expressed AP2/ERF transcription factors were identified, of which 5 were upregulated and 3 were downregulated. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the application of ABA in promoting the consistency of cherry fruit maturity.

Abstract
The increasing global population has heightened the demand for food, leading to escalated food production and, consequently, the generation of significant food waste. Factors such as rapid ripening, susceptibility to physiological disorders, and vulnerability to microbial attacks have been implicated as contributing to the accelerated senescence associated with food waste generation. Fruits and vegetables, characterized by their high perishability, account for approximately half of all food waste produced, rendering them a major area of concern. Various postharvest technologies have thus been employed, including the application of phytohormone treatments, to safeguard and extend the storability of highly perishable food products. This review, therefore, explores the physicochemical properties and biological aspects of phytohormones that render them suitable for food preservation. Furthermore, this review examines the effects of externally applied phytohormones on the postharvest physiology and quality attributes of fresh produce. Finally, the review investigates the mechanisms by which exogenous phytohormones preserve food quality and discusses the associated limitations and safety considerations related to the use of these compounds in food applications.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of p-coumaric acid (p-CA) on postharvest cherry tomatoes, breaker stage fruits were treated with p-CA to analyze the physiological metabolism during storage. The results showed that exogenous p-CA treatment improved the sensory quality of tomato fruits. Transcriptomics results indicated that 782 genes (339 up-regulated and 443 down-regulated) were differentially expressed between p-CA treated and control fruits. Results suggested that p-CA treatment regulated the synthesis of phenolic compounds and inhibited the fruit ripening through the pathways of mangiferic acid biosynthesis and phenylalanine metabolism. Key enzymes activities of the phenylpropane metabolic pathway of tomato fruits were increased, including phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase (C4H), and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL). In addition, the total phenols content, flavonoids content and antioxidant capacities of tomato fruits were improved with p-CA treatment. Overall, these findings showed that p-CA treatment could be a potential strategy for fruit and vegetable preservation.

Abstract
Water bamboo shoots (Zizania latifolia) is prone to quality deterioration during cold storage after harvest, which causes the decline of commodity value. Chlorophyll synthesis and lignin deposition are the major reasons for quality degradation. This paper studied the influence of exogenous melatonin (MT) on the cold storage quality of water bamboo shoots. MT treatment could delay the increase in skin browning, hardness and weight loss rate, inhibit chlorophyll synthesis and color change of water bamboo shoots, while maintain the content of total phenols and flavonoids, and inhibit lignin deposition by inhibiting the activity and gene expression of phenylpropanoid metabolism related enzymes as PAL, C4H, 4CL, CAD, and POD. The results indicate that exogenous MT treatment can effectively inhibit the quality degradation of cold stored water bamboo shoots.

Abstract
Exogenous hormones play a crucial role in regulating plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. However, the effects of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) on sugarcane seedlings under water stress remain poorly understood. Here, in this study, a pot experiment was conducted on sugarcane seedlings 4 weeks after transplanting, employing three treatments: control (normal growth), drought (water stress), and drought + ABA (foliar application of 100 μM ABA before water stress). The main objectives of this research are to understand the effects of exogenous ABA on sugarcane seedlings under water stress conditions and to assess the changes in antioxidant enzyme activity and phytohormone levels in response to exogenous ABA. Water stress was induced in the solution culture by adding 25% (w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 to the Hoagland solution. Leaf samples were collected at 3, 6, and 9 days after treatment, and the photosynthetic and biochemical responses of ABA-treated plants to drought stress were investigated. The indole acetic acid (IAA) activity of the ABA-treated drought plants is compared to that of drought plants. Moreover, the endogenous ABA levels of the ABA-treated drought plants were significantly enhanced by 42.2, 39.9, and 42.3% at 3, 6, and 9 days, respectively, compared to those of drought plants. Additionally, the proline content of the ABA-treated drought plants significantly increased by 45 and 80% at 6 and 9 days, respectively, compared to that of drought plants. The expression of the catalase 1 (CAT1) gene was increased in the ABA-treated drought plants by 2.1-fold, 0.7-fold, and 1.37-fold at 3, 6, and 9 days, respectively, compared to that in drought plants. Similarly, the expression of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase genes of the ABA-treated drought plants also increased compared to those of the drought plants. In conclusion, foliar application of ABA mitigated the negative effects of water shortage of sugarcane plants under water stress. Applying ABA improved the antioxidant defense system of sugarcane plants under drought stress, thereby enhancing their photosynthetic activities and productivity.

Abstract
Maize moldy and spoilage due to microbial growth is a significant challenge in grain storage. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a zinc oxide nanocomposite, ZnO@mSiO2, prepared in our previous research, in inhibiting mold growth and preserving maize cell quality. The results demonstrated that ZnO@mSiO2 could effectively inhibit the growth of dominant microorganism, Aspergillus flavus, Talaromyces variabilis, Penicillium citrinum and Fusarium graminearum, in maize storage. Aspergillus flavus was selected as the model fungus, ZnO@mSiO2 effectively disrupted fungal hyphae structure, leading to reduced hyphal mass and inhibited spore germination. The inhibitory effect of ZnO@mSiO2 on mold growth was concentration-dependent. However, the ZnO@mSiO2 at an appropriate concentration (not exceeding 3.0 g/kg) preserved the integrity of maize cell membranes and enhancing the antioxidant activity within maize cells. The findings highlight the potential of ZnO@mSiO2 as an effective protectant to inhibit mold growth and preserve maize quality during storage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To determine how abscisic acid (ABA) affects tomato fruit ripening at the protein level, mature green cherry tomato fruit were treated with ABA, nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) or sterile water (control, CK). The proteomes of treated fruit were analyzed and quantified using tandem mass tags (TMTs) at 7 days after treatment, and the gene transcription abundances of differently expressed proteins (DEPs) were validated with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Postharvest tomato fruit underwent faster color transformation and ripening than the CK when treated with ABA. In total, 6310 proteins were identified among the CK and treatment groups, of which 5359 were quantified. Using a change threshold of 1.2 or 0.83 times, 1081 DEPs were identified. Among them, 127 were upregulated and 127 were downregulated in the ABA versus CK comparison group. According to KEGG and protein-protein interaction network analyses, the ABA-regulated DEPs were primarily concentrated in the photosynthesis system and sugar metabolism pathways, and 102 DEPs associated with phytohormones biosynthesis and signal transduction, pigment synthesis and metabolism, cell wall metabolism, photosynthesis, redox reactions, allergens and defense responses were identified in the ABA versus CK and NDGA versus CK comparison groups. CONCLUSION ABA affects tomato fruit ripening at the protein level to some extent. The results of this study provided comprehensive insights and data for further research on the regulatory mechanism of ABA in tomato fruit ripening. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Tomato is one of the most important fruits worldwide. It is widely consumed due to its sensory and nutritional attributes. However, like many other industrial crops, it is affected by biotic and abiotic stress factors, reducing its metabolic and physiological processes. Tomato plants possess different mechanisms of stress responses in which hormones have a pivotal role. They are responsible for a complex signaling network, where the antioxidant system (enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants) is crucial for avoiding the excessive damage caused by stress factors. In this sense, it seems that hormones such as ethylene, auxins, brassinosteroids, and salicylic, jasmonic, abscisic, and gibberellic acids, play important roles in increasing antioxidant system and reducing oxidative damage caused by different stressors. Although several studies have been conducted on the stress factors, hormones, and primary metabolites of tomato plants, the effect of endogenous and/or exogenous hormones on the secondary metabolism is still poorly studied, which is paramount for tomato growing management and secondary metabolites production. Thus, this review offers an updated overview of both endogenous biosynthesis and exogenous hormone application in the antioxidant system of tomato plants as a response to biotic and abiotic stress factors.

Abstract
SlAREB1, a member of the abscisic acid (ABA) response element-binding factors (AREB/ABFs) family, was reported to play a crucial role in the expression of ABA-regulated downstream genes and affect the ripening of tomato fruit. However, the downstream genes of SlAREB1 are still unclear. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is a powerful tool and a standard method for studying the interactions between DNA and proteins at the genome-wide level. In the present study, SlAREB1 was proved to continually increase until the mature green stage and then decrease during the ripening period, and a total of 972 gene peaks were identified downstream of SlAREB1 by ChIP-seq analysis, mainly located in the intergenic and promoter regions. Further gene ontology (GO) annotation analysis revealed that the target sequence of SlAREB1 was the most involved in biological function. Kyoto Encylopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis showed that the identified genes were mainly involved in the oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthesis pathways, and some of them were associated with tomato phytohormone synthesis, the cell wall, pigment, and the antioxidant characteristic of the fruit as well. Based on these results, an initial model of SlAREB1 regulation on tomato fruit ripening was constructed, which provided a theoretical basis for further exploring the effects of the regulation mechanism of SlAREB1 and ABA on tomato fruit ripening.

Abstract
Several physiological changes occur during fruit storage, which include the regulation of genes, metabolisms and transcription factors. In this study, we compared 'JF308' (a normal tomato cultivar) and 'YS006' (a storable tomato cultivar) to determine the difference in accumulated metabolites, gene expression, and accessible chromatin regions through metabolome, transcriptome, and ATAC-seq analysis. A total of 1006 metabolites were identified in two cultivars. During storage time, sugars, alcohols and flavonoids were found to be more abundant in 'YS006' compared to 'JF308' on day 7, 14, and 21, respectively. Differentially expressed genes, which involved in starch and sucrose biosynthesis were observed higher in 'YS006'. 'YS006' had lower expression levels of CesA (cellulose synthase), PL (pectate lyase), EXPA (expansin) and XTH (xyglucan endoglutransglucosylase/hydrolase) than 'JF308'. The results showed that phenylpropanoid pathway, carbohydrate metabolism and cell wall metabolism play important roles in prolonging the shelf life of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) fruit. The ATAC-seq analysis revealed that the most significantly up-regulated transcription factors during storage were TCP 2,3,4,5, and 24 in 'YS006' compared to 'JF308' on day 21. This information on the molecular regulatory mechanisms and metabolic pathways of post-harvest quality changes in tomato fruit provides a theoretical foundation for slowing post-harvest decay and loss, and has theoretical importance and application value in breeding for longer shelf life cultivars.

Abstract
Reports show that phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is involved in reducing zucchini postharvest chilling injury. During the storage of harvested fruit at low temperatures, chilling injury symptoms were associated with cell damage through the production of reactive oxygen species. In this work, we have studied the importance of different non-enzymatic antioxidants on tolerance to cold stress in zucchini fruit treated with ABA. The application of ABA increases the antioxidant capacity of zucchini fruit during storage through the accumulation of ascorbate, carotenoids and polyphenolic compounds. The quantification of specific phenols was performed by UPLC/MS-MS, observing that exogenous ABA mainly activated the production of flavonoids. The rise in all these non-enzymatic antioxidants due to ABA correlates with a reduction in oxidative stress in treated fruit during cold stress. The results showed that the ABA mainly induces antioxidant metabolism during the first day of exposure to low temperatures, and this response is key to avoiding the occurrence of chilling injury. This work suggests an important protective role of non-enzymatic antioxidants and polyphenolic metabolism in the prevention of chilling injury in zucchini fruit.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an essential micronutrient for plants because it functions as a redox-active cofactor in vital processes inside the cells. Arable lands are often deficient in micronutrient contents and require the application of enriched fertilisers, whose overuse poses a high risk for human health, the environment and the food safety. Here, we aimed to decipher the effects of Cu deficiency during fruit growth on Cu and other micronutrients contents and on the fruit nutritional value and quality of tomato, the most consumed fruit worldwide, throughout the maturation process. Changes in the contents of important micronutrients for fruit physiology and human health, such as Fe and Mn, occurred in response to Cu deficient growing conditions at different fruit ripening stages, while lower Cu levels were detected in those fruit along the whole maturation process. Cu deficiency delayed changes in lycopene content and fruit colour, but increased acidity, and advanced the rise in antioxidant capacity and vitamin C content during fruit colour change from green to light red in the Moneymaker tomato; although this time lag eventually caught up in the most mature fruit stage. Cu deficiency also increased total phenolic and flavonoid contents only in green fruit.

Abstract
Background
The nematodes of the genus Helicotylenchus are root parasites of a wide variety of plants, and certain species can cause serious damage to their hosts. During a survey of the plant-parasitic nematode associated with tomato, a population of Helicotylenchus was collected from tomato roots and soil samples. Thus, one of the objectives of the study was to confirm the specie of Helicotylenchus obtained from the tomato samples based on morphological and molecular characteristics. In addition, a mass pure culture of plant-parasitic nematodes is key to pathogenicity studies and many other biological studies. However, a successful mass rearing method for Helicotylenchus has not been reported. Thus, the other objective of the study was to establish a method of culturing Helicotylenchus.
Results
Based on both the morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and D2-D3 expansion region of 28S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences the specimens were identified as Helicotylenchus microlobus. Phylogenetic analysis with the rRNA sequences of the ITS and 28S D2-D3 regions was consistent with molecular identification, suggesting this population formed a highly supported clade with other H. microlobus populations. Additionally, a method for culture of H. microlobus on carrot disks was established, and the effect of temperature on the reproduction rate (Rr) of H. microlobus was investigated. The optimum temperature for culturing H. microlobus on carrot disks was 27.5 °C and, after inoculation with 30 females of H. microlobus at 27.5 °C for 90 days, Rr reached 406.
Conclusions
To our knowledge, this is the first detailed description of H. microlobus from tomato in China. This study also demonstrated that the carrot disk method is suitable for the culture of H. microlobus. This study lays a foundation for other related research on H. microlobus, and has significance for the study of Helicotylenchus.

Abstract
An in vitro experiment was conducted to determine the influence of phytohormones on the enhancement of bamboo resistance to heavy metal exposure (Cd and Cu). To this end, one-year-old bamboo plants (Pleioblastus pygmaeus (Miq.) Nakai.) contaminated by 100 µM Cd and 100 µM Cu both individually and in combination were treated with 10 µM, 6-benzylaminopurine and 10 µM abscisic acid. The results revealed that while 100 µM Cd and 100 µM Cu accelerated plant cell death and decreased plant growth and development, 10 µM 6-benzylaminopurine and 10 µM abscisic acid, both individually and in combination, increased plant growth by boosting antioxidant activities, non-antioxidants indices, tyrosine ammonia-lyase activity (TAL), as well as phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity (PAL). Moreover, this combination enhanced protein thiol, total thiol, non-protein, glycine betaine (GB), the content of proline (Pro), glutathione (GSH), photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll and Carotenoids), fluorescence parameters, dry weight in shoot and root, as well as length of the shoot. It was then concluded that 6-benzyl amino purine and abscisic acid, both individually and in combination, enhanced plant tolerance under Cd and Cu through several key mechanisms, including increased antioxidant activity, improved photosynthesis properties, and decreased metals accumulation and metal translocation from root to shoot.

Abstract
Cryptococcus laurentii induces resistance through in concert with key metabolic changes in tomato fruit. A total of 59 metabolites were differently abundant in C. laurentii-treated tomato fruit. Key metabolites chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acid are involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway may play a key role in resistance induction by C. Laurentii in tomato.
To investigate the mechanisms underlying inducible resistance in postharvest tomato fruit, non-targeted metabolome analysis was performed to uncover metabolic changes in tomato fruit upon Cryptococcus laurentii treatment. 289 and 149 metabolites were identified in positive and negative ion modes, respectively. A total of 59 metabolites, mainly including phenylpropanoids, flavonoids and phenolic acids, were differently abundant in C. laurentii-treated tomato fruit. Moreover, key metabolites involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, especially chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and ferulic acid were identified through KEGG enrichment analysis. Enhanced levels of phenolic acids indicated activation of the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, which is a classic metabolic pathway associated with inducible resistance, suggesting that its activation and consequent metabolic changes contributed to inducible resistence induced by C. laurentii. Our findings would provide new understanding of resistance induction mechanism in tomato fruit from the metabolic perspective, and offer novel insights for new approaches reducing postharvest loss on tomato.

Abstract
Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.), which has a complex genome, is one of the most important storage root crops in the world. Sweetpotato blades are considered as a potential source of natural antioxidants owing to their high phenolic content with powerful free radical scavenging ability. The molecular mechanism of phenolic metabolism in sweetpotato blades has been seldom reported thus far. In this work, 23 sweetpotato genotypes were used for the analysis of their antioxidant activity, total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). ‘Shangshu19’ and ‘Wan1314-6’ were used for RNA-seq. The results showed that antioxidant activity, TPC and TFC of 23 genotypes had significant difference. There was a significant positive correlation between TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity. The RNA-seq analysis results of two genotypes, ‘Shangshu19’ and ‘Wan1314-6’, which had significant differences in antioxidant activity, TPC and TFC, showed that there were 7810 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the two genotypes. Phenylpropanoid biosynthesis was the main differential pathway, and upregulated genes were mainly annotated to chlorogenic acid, flavonoid and lignin biosynthesis pathways. Our results establish a theoretical and practical basis for sweetpotato breeding with antioxidant activity and phenolics in the blades and provide a theoretical basis for the study of phenolic metabolism engineering in sweetpotato blade.

Abstract
Hot water treatment (HWT) of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruit reduces the symptoms of chilling injury (CI). The aim of this study was to identify metabolites associated with HWT-induced CI tolerance in tomato fruit cv. Imperial. Mature green tomatoes with HWT (42°C/5 min) and control were stored under chilling conditions (5°C/20 days) and then ripened (21°C/7 days). Methanol extracts from pericarp were analyzed for total phenolics (TP), antioxidant activity (AoxA), and metabolic profiling by UPLC-DAD-MS and GC-MS. After cold storage and ripening, HWT fruit showed less CI, higher TP, and AoxA than control. It also showed an increased accumulation of phenolics, sugars, and some alkaloids that may be mediated by azelaic acid, glutamine, and tryptophan. The levels of N-feruloyl putrescine, esculeoside AII, and hydroxy-α-tomatine II were reduced. The better metabolic performance of HWT fruit under cold storage was associated with a higher accumulation of several metabolites (e.g., antioxidants and osmolytes) in ripening fruit. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The identification of metabolites associated with the reduction of chilling injury (CI) symptoms in HWT tomato fruit extends the understanding of the mechanisms involved in CI tolerance. This information provides targets that could be used to develop strategies for preventing CI (e.g., genetic improvement of tomato, direct application of key metabolites). The application of such strategies will increase the economic value and decrease postharvest losses.

Differential Triggering of the Phenylpropanoid Biosynthetic Pathway Key Genes Transcription upon Cold Stress and Viral Infection in Tomato Leaves. HORTICULTURAE 2021. Abstract
Plants develop a plethora of defense strategies during their acclimation and interactions with various environmental stresses. Secondary metabolites play a pivotal role in the processes during stress acclimation, therefore deciphering their relevant responses exchange the interpretation of the underlying molecular mechanisms that may contribute to improved adaptability and efficacy. In the current study, tomato plants were exposed to short-term cold stress (5 °C for 16 h) or inoculated (20 d) with either Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) or Potato Virus Y (PVY). Responses were recorded via the assessments of leaf total phenolic (TP) content, total flavonoid (TF) levels, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) enzyme activity. The transcription of the gene families regulating the core phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway (PBP) at an early (PAL, cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase, 4-coumarate-CoA ligase) or late (chalcone synthase and flavonol synthase) stage was also evaluated. The results showed that cold stress stimulated an increase in TP and TF contents, while PAL enzyme activity was also elevated compared to viral infection. Besides genes transcription of the enzymes involved in the core PBP was mostly induced by cold stress, whereas transcription of the genes regulating flavonoid biosynthesis was mainly triggered by viral infection. In conclusion, abiotic and biotic stressors induced differential regulation of the core PBP and flavonoid biosynthetic metabolism. Taking the above into consideration, our results highlight the complexity of tomato responses to diverse stimuli allowing for better elucidation of stress tolerance mechanisms at this crop.

Sustainable food security due to climate and social change is more important than ever. This study was conducted to increase plant growth and bioactive contents using intercropping technology in urban agriculture. Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) were intercropped in different ratios in outdoor rooftop, and lettuce (Lactuca savita L.) was grown with chicory (Cichorium intybus. L.) in the indoor LED plant growth chambers. Carotenoids in plant foods were analyzed using an ultraperformance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection. Chlorophyll contents were determined by the soil analysis development chlorophyll meter. Tomatoes planted with sunflowers (3 : 1) had a significantly larger stem diameter (
), a large number of leaves (

) as compared to those of monocultured tomatoes. Lettuce planted in a ratio of 1 : 3 with lettuce and chicory had significantly higher contents of chlorophyll (

), than lettuce planted alone. On the other hand, intercropping of chicory and lettuce did not have a beneficial effect on the growth and carotenoid content of chicory. The current study indicates that plant growth and carotenoid content can be substantially modified by cocultivation, and the effects may vary depending on the type of plant and the crop ratio.

Abstract
Tomatoes are perishable fruit that makes them deteriorate rapidly during the post-harvest chain. Therefore, the effect of calcium chloride (CaCl2), chitosan, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and ozonated water on the storage abil\ity and quality of tomato fruit (Solanumlycopersicum L. cv. 448) stored at 10 °C for 28 d was studied. Weight loss, firmness, fruit color, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity, total carotenoids, and ascorbic acid content (AsA) of treated tomato fruit were recorded. Our results revealed that all tested treatments significantly extended the shelf-life and maintained quality of tomato fruit compared to the control. Chitosan and CaCl2 were the most effective treatments in maintaining quality attributes. Furthermore, a correlation study suggested that AsA and total carotenoids played a vital role in conserving tomato fruit quality during storage. PC1 had strong positive loading for pH, appearance, firmness, AsA, TSS, carotene, fruit color (L* & b*) and a strong negative loading for lycopene content, color (a), weight loss, and color index. PC2 had high positive loading for total acidity and total sugar content.

Abstract
Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas [L.] Lam.) stem tips, which contain high concentrations of chlorogenic acid (CGA), are useful as a physiologically functional food to protect against some serious diseases. According to previous studies, exogenous application of phytohormones may be an effective agrotechnical measure to control CGA biosynthesis through the transcriptional regulation of pathway gene expressions. To understand the mechanism of CGA biosynthesis in sweetpotato, we investigated the effects of exogenous phytohormones on CGA metabolism in stem tips of sweetpotato. A significantly elevated CGA content was observed in salicylic acid (SA)-treated sweetpotato stem tips at 72 h, as well as in those subjected to abscisic acid (ABA) or gibberellic acid (GA) treatments. Dynamic expression change of seven enzyme genes involved in sweetpotato CGA biosynthesis were analyzed to determine correlations between transcript levels and CGA accumulation. As revealed by the differential expression of these genes under distinct phytohormone treatments, the regulation of specific pathway genes is a critical determinant of the accumulation of CGA in sweetpotato stem tips. We also found that several hormone-responsive sites, such as those for ABA, GA, SA, and jasmonic acid (JA), were present in the promoter regions of sweetpotato CGA biosynthestic pathway genes. Collectively, phytohormones can regulate the transcription of CGA synthesis-related genes and ultimately affect CGA accumulation in sweetpotato stem tips, whereas the regulatory differences are mirrored by cis-acting elements in the corresponding pathway gene promoters.

Abstract
Fruit ripening and senescence are finely controlled by plant hormones such as ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA) but also by calcium ions and by calcium-dependent signaling pathways. Although there are extensive data supporting an interaction between ethylene and calcium in fruit ripening, the regulatory mechanisms resulting from the interaction between ABA and calcium have not yet been fully clarified. In this article, we have reviewed the full roles of calcium and its sensors (CaM, CMLs, CDPKs, CBLs) as well as ABA and the interactions between the two signaling pathways in the regulation of stress responses and in fruit ripening. To illustrate the possible interaction between calcium sensors and ABA signaling components in the control of fruit ripening, we propose an interaction model between the calcium and ABA signaling pathways.

Abstract
Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a key role in fruit development and ripening in non-climacteric fruit. A variety of metabolites such as sugars, anthocyanins, fatty acids, and several antioxidants, which are regulated by various phytohormones, are important components of fruit quality in grape. Here, grape cultivar "Ruiduhongyu" was used to investigate the relationship between endogenous phytohormones and metabolites associated to grape berry quality under exogenous ABA treatment. 500 mg/L ABA significantly improved the appearance parameters and the content of many metabolites including sugar, anthocyanin, and other compounds. Exogenous ABA also increased the contents of ABA, auxin (IAA), and cytokinins (CTKs), and transcription level of ABA biosynthesis and signaling related genes in fruit. Furthermore, a series of genes involved in biosynthesis and the metabolite pathway of sugars, anthocyanins, and fatty acids were shown to be significantly up-regulated under 500 mg/L ABA treatment. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated that there existed relatively strong cooperativities in the ABA/kinetin (KT)-appearance parameters, ABA/IAA/KT-sugars, ABA/indolepopionic acid (IPA)/zeatin riboside (ZR)-anthocyanins, and gibberellin 3 (GA3)/methyl jasmonate (MeJA)-fatty acids, indicating that 13 kinds of endogenous phytohormones induced by ABA had different contributions to the accumulation of quality-related metabolites, while all of them were involved in regulating the overall improvement of grape fruit quality. These results laid a primary foundation for better understanding that exogenous ABA improves fruit quality by mediating the endogenous phytohormones level in grape.
