Nano-based biofuel production from low-cost lignocellulose biomass: environmental sustainability and economic approach

The use of nanomaterials in biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass offers a promising approach to simultaneously address environmental sustainability and economic viability. This review provides an overview of the environmental and economic implications of integrating nanotechnology into biofuel production from low-cost lignocellulosic biomass. In this review, we highlight the potential benefits and challenges of nano-based biofuel production. Nanomaterials provide opportunities to improve feedstock pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and catalysis, resulting in enhanced process efficiency, lower energy consumption, and reduced environmental impact. Conducting life cycle assessments is crucial for evaluating the overall environmental footprint of biofuel production. An economic perspective that focuses on the cost implications of utilizing nanomaterials in biofuel production is also discussed. A comprehensive understanding of both environmental and economic dimensions is essential to fully harness the potential of nanomaterials in biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass and to move towards sustainable future energy.

PEI-Mediated Assembly of Fe3O4 onto SiO2-Encapsulated CsPbBr3 for Highly Sensitive Fluorescent Lateral Flow Immunoassay

The conventional lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) method using colloidal gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as labeling agents faces two inherent limitations, including restricted sensitivity and poor quantitative capability, which impede early viral infection detection. Herein, we designed and synthesized CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dot-based composite nanoparticles, CsPbBr3@SiO2@Fe3O4 (CSF), which integrated fluorescence detection and magnetic enrichment properties into LFIA technology and achieved rapid, sensitive, and convenient quantitative detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus N protein. In this study, CsPbBr3 served as a high-quantum-yield fluorescent signaling probe, while SiO2 significantly enhanced the stability and biomodifiability of CsPbBr3. Importantly, the SiO2 shell shows relatively low absorption or scattering toward fluorescence, maintaining a quantum yield of up to 74.4% in CsPbBr3@SiO2. Assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles mediated by PEI further enhanced the method's sensitivity and reduced matrix interference through magnetic enrichment. Consequently, the method achieved a fluorescent detection range of 1 × 102 to 5 × 106 pg·mL-1 after magnetic enrichment, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 58.8 pg·mL-1, representing a 13.3-fold improvement compared to nonenriched samples (7.58 × 102 pg·mL-1) and a 2-orders-of-magnitude improvement over commercial colloidal gold kits. Furthermore, the method exhibited 80% positive and 100% negative detection rates in clinical samples. This approach holds promise for on-site diagnosis, home-based quantitative tests, and disease procession evaluation.

Magnetic Nanoparticles: A Review on Synthesis, Characterization, Functionalization, and Biomedical Applications

Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are applied in numerous fields, especially in biomedical applications. Since biofluidic samples and biological tissues are nonmagnetic, negligible background signals can interfere with the magnetic signals from MNPs in magnetic biosensing and imaging applications. In addition, the MNPs can be remotely controlled by magnetic fields, which make it possible for magnetic separation and targeted drug delivery. Furthermore, due to the unique dynamic magnetizations of MNPs when subjected to alternating magnetic fields, MNPs are also proposed as a key tool in cancer treatment, an example is magnetic hyperthermia therapy. Due to their distinct surface chemistry, good biocompatibility, and inducible magnetic moments, the material and morphological structure design of MNPs has attracted enormous interest from a variety of scientific domains. Herein, a thorough review of the chemical synthesis strategies of MNPs, the methodologies to modify the MNPs surface for better biocompatibility, the physicochemical characterization techniques for MNPs, as well as some representative applications of MNPs in disease diagnosis and treatment are provided. Further portions of the review go into the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of composite MNPs with core/shell structures as well as a deeper analysis of MNP properties to learn about potential biomedical applications.

In vitro analysis of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle mediated degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their antimicrobial activity

To degrade anthracene, magnetite nanoparticles were produced using a simple co-precipitation process. The fabricated nanoparticles have been analyzed for structural and optical properties. XRD examination revealed that the produced Fe3O4 nanoparticles were cubic phase, having a mean crystallite dimension of 18.84 nm. DLS determined the hydrodynamic diameter of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to be 182 nm. UV-Vis research revealed that Fe3O4 nanoparticles absorb at 390 nm. A peak at 895 cm-1 in the FT-IR study indicated the metal-oxygen connection. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles demonstrated an effective photocatalytic performance towards anthracene degradation and was found to be 86.55%. Furthermore, Fe3O4 nanoparticles showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis was 19.43 mm. The present study is the first and foremost study determining the dual role of Fe3O4 nanoparticles towards bioremediation and biomedical applications.

In vivo application of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer in rheumatoid arthritis rat model

A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was synthesised and tested for an in vivo rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rat model. Magnetite coated with mesoporous silica (Fe2O3@mSi) was used as core for surface imprinting, dopamine was used as monomer and methotrexate (MTX) was loaded directly during polymerisation. The amount of MTX loaded on MMIPs reached 201.165 ± 0.315 µmol/g. Characterisation of the polymers was done via SEM, TEM, and FTIR. The pharmacological effect of the selected MMIP was evaluated in a Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis rat model where a 3D magnet bearing construct was designed for targeted delivery of MMIPs. The parameters evaluated were the change in paw edoema, paw diameter, gait score, and animal's weight. Results revealed a tendency of MMIP to significantly improve the measured parameters which was confirmed with histopathological findings. In conclusion, the improvement in the arthritic signs associated with MMIP treatment compared to free MTX, indicated successful targeting of MMIPs to the site of inflammation.

Detection of methyltransferase activity and inhibitor screening based on rGO-mediated silver enhancement signal amplification strategy

DNA methylation refers to the chemical modification process of obtaining a methyl group by the covalent bonding of a specific base in DNA sequence with S-adenosyl methionine (SAM) as a methyl donor under the catalysis of methyltransferase (MTase), which is related to the occurrence of multiple diseases. Therefore, the detection of MTase activity is of great significance for disease diagnosis and drug screening. Because reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has a unique planar structure and remarkable catalytic performance, it is not clear whether rGO can rapidly catalyze silver deposition as an effective way of signal amplification. However, in this study, we were pleasantly surprised to find that using H₂O₂ as a reducing agent, rGO can rapidly catalyze silver deposition, and its catalytic efficiency of silver deposition is significantly better than that of GO. Therefore, based on further verifying the mechanism of catalytic properties of rGO, we constructed a novel electrochemical biosensor (rGO/silver biosensor) for the detection of dam MTase activity, which has high selectivity and sensitivity to MTase in the range of 0.1 U/mL to 10.0 U/mL, and the detection limit is as low as 0.07 U/mL. Besides, this study also used Gentamicin and 5-Fluorouracil as inhibitor models, confirming that the biosensor has a good application prospect in the high-throughput screening of dam MTase inhibitors.

An artificialed protein corona coating the surface of magnetic nanoparicles:a simple and efficient method for label antibody

Background

Protein Corona (PC) of nanoparticles is a structure which composed of one or more layers of proteins adsorbed on the surface of nanomaterials, and the formation of PC is a universal process of spontaneous randomness. We take advantage of the formation principle of the PC, developed a simple and efficient method for label protein to nanoparticles.

Methods

The artificialed protein corona (APC) on the surface of nanoparticles was synthesized via the artificialed methods of desolvation aggregation and crosslinking with control.

Results

The dosage of precipitator and the ratio of protein to magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs)(particle size: 3 nm) were optimized, and the core-shell nanoparticles with narrow particle size (particle size: 10 nm) distribution were obtained. The MNPs with APC were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Additionally, a hemolysis test on prepared MNPs was conducted with APC. The presence of APC coating on the surface of MNPs showed an improving effect to reduce the cytotoxicity. Cellular toxicity of MNPs with APC was also investigated on HFF1 cell lines. And the cells survival in the presence of APC coated MNPs and display neither reduced metabolism nor cytostatic effect. The functional test of the MNPs with APC showed that proteins can be modified and labeled onto magnetic nanoparticles and retain their original activity.

Conclusions

This marking method is gentle and effective. And the properties of the APC propose MNPs as a promising candidate for multifunctional biomedical applications.

Tailored design and preparation of magnetic nanocomposite particles for the isolation of exosomes

Here, we prepared a magnetic nanocomposite system composed of a cluster of magnetite nanoparticles coated with silica shell (MSNPs) with an average diameter of 140 ± 20 nm and conjugated with CD9 antibody (AntiCD9) using different strategies including adsorption or chemical conjugation of antibody molecules to either aminated MSNPs (AMSNPs) or carboxylated MSNPs (CMSNPs). Then, MSNPs were employed to isolate exosomes from ultracentrifuge-enriched solution, PC3 cell-culture medium, or exosome-spiked simulated plasma samples. Quantitative tests using nanoparticle-tracking analysis confirmed antibody-covalently conjugated MSNPs, i.e. the AntiCD9-AMSNPs and AntiCD9-CMSNPs enabled >90% recovery of exosomes. Additionally, the exosomes isolated with AntiCD9-CMSNPs showed higher recovery efficiency compared to the AntiCD9-AMSNPs. For both nanoadsorbents, lower protein impurities amounts were obtained as compared to that of exosomes isolated by ultracentrifugation and Exocib kit. The mean diameter assessment of the isolated exosomes indicates that particles isolated by using AntiCD9-AMSNPs and AntiCD9-CMSNPs have smaller sizes (136 ± 2.64 nm and 113 ± 11.53 nm, respectively) than those obtained by UC-enriched exosomes (140.9 ± 1.6 nm) and Exocib kit (167 ± 10.53 nm). Such promising results obtained in the isolation of exosomes recommend magnetic nanocomposite as an efficient tool for the simple and fast isolation of exosomes for diagnosis applications.

From Synthetic Route of Silica Nanoparticles to Theranostic Applications

The advancements in nanotechnology have quickly developed a new subject with vast applications of nanostructured materials in medicine and pharmaceuticals. The enormous surface-to-volume ratio, ease of surface modification, outstanding biocompatibility, and, in the case of mesoporous nanoparticles, the tunable pore size make the silica nanoparticles (SNPs) a promising candidate for nano-based medical applications. The preparation of SNPs and their contemporary usage as drug carriers, contrast agents for imaging, carrier of photosensitizers (PS) in photodynamic, as well as photothermal treatments are intensely discussed in this review. Furthermore, the potential harmful responses of silica nanoparticles are reviewed using data obtained from in vitro and in vivo experiments conducted by several studies. Moreover, we showcase the engineering of SNPs for the theranostic applications that can address several intrinsic limitations of conventional therapeutics and diagnostics. In the end, a personal perspective was outlined to state SNPs’ current status and future directions, focusing on SNPs’ significant potentiality and opportunities.

Magnetic Iron Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Surface Enhancements, and Biological Challenges

This review focuses on the role of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), their physicochemical properties, their potential applications, and their association with the consequent toxicological effects in complex biologic systems. These MNPs have generated an accelerated development and research movement in the last two decades. They are solving a large portion of problems in several industries, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, water remediation, photoelectronics, and information storage, to name a few. As a result, more MNPs are put into contact with biological organisms, including humans, via interacting with their cellular structures. This situation will require a deeper understanding of these particles’ full impact in interacting with complex biological systems, and even though extensive studies have been carried out on different biological systems discussing toxicology aspects of MNP systems used in biomedical applications, they give mixed and inconclusive results. Chemical agencies, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemical substances (REACH) legislation for registration, evaluation, and authorization of substances and materials from the European Chemical Agency (ECHA), have held meetings to discuss the issue. However, nanomaterials (NMs) are being categorized by composition alone, ignoring the physicochemical properties and possible risks that their size, stability, crystallinity, and morphology could bring to health. Although several initiatives are being discussed around the world for the correct management and disposal of these materials, thanks to the extensive work of researchers everywhere addressing the issue of related biological impacts and concerns, and a new nanoethics and nanosafety branch to help clarify and bring together information about the impact of nanoparticles, more questions than answers have arisen regarding the behavior of MNPs with a wide range of effects in the same tissue. The generation of a consolidative framework of these biological behaviors is necessary to allow future applications to be manageable.

Silica Shell Thickness-Dependent Fluorescence Properties of SiO2@Ag@SiO2@QDs Nanocomposites

Silica shell coatings, which constitute important technology for nanoparticle (NP) developments, are utilized in many applications. The silica shell's thickness greatly affects distance-dependent optical properties, such as metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) and fluorescence quenching in plasmonic nanocomposites. However, the precise control of silica-shell thicknesses has been mainly conducted on single metal NPs, and rarely on complex nanocomposites. In this study, silica shell-coated Ag nanoparticle-assembled silica nanoparticles (SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂), with finely controlled silica shell thicknesses (4 nm to 38 nm), were prepared, and quantum dots (QDs) were introduced onto SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂. The dominant effect between plasmonic quenching and MEF was defined depending on the thickness of the silica shell between Ag and QDs. When the distance between Ag NPs to QDs was less than ~10 nm, SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂@QDs showed weaker fluorescence intensities than SiO₂@QD (without metal) due to the quenching effect. On the other hand, when the distance between Ag NPs to QDs was from 10 nm to 14 nm, the fluorescence intensity of SiO₂@Ag@SiO₂@QD was stronger than SiO₂@QDs due to MEF. The results provide background knowledge for controlling the thickness of silica shells in metal-containing nanocomposites and facilitate the development of potential applications utilizing the optimal plasmonic phenomenon.

Comparative Evaluation of Different Surface Coatings of Fe3O4-Based Magnetic Nano Sorbent for Applications in the Nucleic Acids Extraction

Nucleic acid extraction and purification are crucial steps in sample preparation for multiple diagnostic procedures. Routine methodologies of DNA isolation require benchtop equipment (e.g., centrifuges) and labor-intensive steps. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as solid-phase sorbents could simplify this procedure. A wide range of surface coatings employs various molecular interactions between dsDNA and magnetic nano-sorbents. However, a reliable, comparative evaluation of their performance is complex. In this work, selected Fe3O4 modifications, i.e., polyethyleneimine, gold, silica, and graphene derivatives, were comprehensively evaluated for applications in dsDNA extraction. A family of single batch nanoparticles was compared in terms of morphology (STEM), composition (ICP-MS/MS and elemental analysis), surface coating (UV-Vis, TGA, FTIR), and MNP charge (ζ-potential). ICP-MS/MS was also used to unify MNPs concentration allowing a reliable assessment of individual coatings on DNA extraction. Moreover, studies on adsorption medium (monovalent vs. divalent ions) and extraction buffer composition were carried out. As a result, essential relationships between nanoparticle coatings and DNA adsorption efficiencies have been noticed. Fe3O4@PEI MNPs turned out to be the most efficient nano sorbents. The optimized composition of the extraction buffer (medium containing 0.1 mM EDTA) helped avoid problems with Fe3+ stripping, which improved the validity of the spectroscopic determination of DNA recovery.

Synthesis, characterization, in vitro cytotoxicity and DNA interaction studies of antioxidant ferulic acid loaded on γ-Fe2O3@SiO2 nanoparticles

In this investigation, Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared via a chemical coprecipitation reaction, and the surface of Fe₃O₄ MNPs was coated with silica by a sol-gel process. The surface of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ MNPs was modified by an antioxidant agent, trans-ferulic acid, to achieve water-soluble MNPs for biological applications. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed that the MNPs were successfully coated with SiO₂ and ferulic acid (FA) ligand. The morphology of γ-Fe₂O₃@SiO₂-FA MNPs was found to be spherical in images of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and showed a uniform size distribution with an average diameter of 21 nm. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of γ-Fe₂O₃@SiO₂-FA MNPs and FA were investigated against the human cancer cells (MCF-7, PC-3, U-87 MG, A-2780, and A-549) by MTT colorimetric assay. The cytotoxic effect of MNPs on all cancer cell lines was several times of magnitude higher compared to free FA except for A-549 cell lines. Furthermore, in vitro DNA binding studies were investigated by UV-vis and circular dichroism spectroscopies.

Decorated magnetic nanoparticles with polyvinyl alcohol brushes modified with metal chelate affinity groups for purification of proteins

Refining is a serious challenge in the production of recombinant proteins, and this study proposes a new and easy strategy for the synthesis of magnetic affinity nanoparticles. First, the nanoparticles attached to polyvinyl alcohol brushes were synthesized, and then the hydroxyl groups of this polymer were converted to chelate groups. The nanoparticles were examined by (SEM) scanning electron microscopy, (TEM) transmission electron microscopy, (DLS) dynamic light scattering, (FT-IR) Fourier transform infrared, (XRD) X-ray powder diffraction, (VSM) vibrating sample magnetometry, and (TGA) thermal gravimetric analysis. The results confirm that uniform and spherical magnetic polymer nanoparticles with high magnetization and superparamagnetic properties were successfully synthesized. The S100A9 protein, a His-tagged recombinant protein, was expressed and purified using the synthesized nanoparticles. According to the (SDS-PAGE) sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis results, there is a high degree of resolution in protein separation. The synthesized nanoparticles have a high protein binding capacity of about 208 mg of protein per gram of nanoparticles.

Fabrication of Copper(II)-Coated Magnetic Core-Shell Nanoparticles Fe3O4@SiO2: An Effective and Recoverable Catalyst for Reduction/Degradation of Environmental Pollutants

In this work, we report the synthesis of a magnetically recoverable catalyst through immobilizing copper (II) over the Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) surface [Fe3O4@SiO2-L–Cu(II)] (L = pyridine-4-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazide). Accordingly, synthesized catalysts were determined and characterized by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) procedures. The [Fe3O4@SiO2-L–Cu(II)] was used for the reduction of Cr(VI), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and organic dyes such as Congo Red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) in aqueous media. Catalytic performance studies showed that the [Fe3O4@SiO2–L–Cu(II)] has excellent activity toward reduction reactions under mild conditions. Remarkable attributes of this method are high efficiency, removal of a homogeneous catalyst, easy recovery from the reaction mixture, and uncomplicated route. The amount of activity in this catalytic system was almost constant after several stages of recovery and reuse. The results show that the catalyst was easily separated and retained 83% of its efficiency after five cycles without considerable loss of activity and stability.

Magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic particle spectroscopy-based bioassays: a 15 year recap

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have unique physical and chemical properties, such as high surface area to volume ratio and size-related magnetism, which are completely different from their bulk materials. Benefiting from the facile synthesis and chemical modification strategies, MNPs have been widely studied for applications in nanomedicine. Herein, we firstly summarized the designs of MNPs from the perspectives of materials and physicochemical properties tailored for biomedical applications. Magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS), first reported in 2006, has flourished as an independent platform for many biological and biomedical applications. It has been extensively reported as a versatile platform for a variety of bioassays along with the artificially designed MNPs, where the MNPs serve as magnetic nanoprobes to specifically probe target analytes from fluid samples. In this review, the mechanisms and theories of different MPS platforms realizing volumetric- and surface-based bioassays are discussed. Some representative works of MPS platforms for applications such as disease diagnosis, food safety and plant pathology monitoring, drug screening, thrombus maturity assessments are reviewed. At the end of this review, we commented on the rapid growth and booming of MPS-based bioassays in its first 15 years. We also prospected opportunities and challenges that portable MPS devices face in the rapidly growing demand for fast, inexpensive, and easy-to-use biometric techniques.

Metal-bio functionalized bismuthmagnetite [Fe3-x Bi x O4/SiO2@l-ArgEt3 +I-/Zn(ii)]: a novel bionanocomposite for the synthesis of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-2,4-dioxobenzo[b][1,4]diazepine malononitriles and malonamides at room temperature and under sonication

In this work, a new magnetized composite of bismuth (Fe_3−xBi_xO₄) was prepared and functionalized stepwise with silica, triethylargininium iodide ionic liquid, and Zn(ii) to prepare a multi-layered core–shell bio-nanostructure, [Fe_3−xBi_xO₄/SiO₂@l-ArgEt₃⁺I⁻/Zn(ii)]. The modified bismuth magnetic amino acid-containing nanocomposite was characterized using several techniques including Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetric (TGA/DSC) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The magnetized bionanocomposite exhibited high catalytic activity for the synthesis of 1,2,4,5-tetrahydro-2,4-dioxobenzo[b][1,4]diazepine malononitriles via five-component reactions between 1,2-phenylenediamines, Meldrum's acid, malononitrile, aldehydes, and isocyanides at room temperature in ethanol. The efficacy of this protocol was also examined to obtain malonamide derivatives via pseudo six-component reactions of 1,4-phenylenediamine, Meldrum's acid, malononitrile, aldehydes, and isocyanides. When the above-mentioned MCRs were repeated under the same conditions with the application of sonication, a notable decrease in the reaction time was observed. The recovery and reusability of the metal-bio functionalized bismuthmagnetite were examined successfully in 3 runs. Furthermore, the characteristics of the recovered Fe_3−xBi_xO₄/SiO₂@l-ArgEt₃⁺I⁻/Zn(ii) were investigated though FESEM and EDAX analysis.

A Comprehensive Updated Review on Magnetic Nanoparticles in Diagnostics

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been studied for diagnostic purposes for decades. Their high surface-to-volume ratio, dispersibility, ability to interact with various molecules and superparamagnetic properties are at the core of what makes MNPs so promising. They have been applied in a multitude of areas in medicine, particularly Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are the most well-accepted based on their excellent superparamagnetic properties and low toxicity. Nevertheless, IONPs are facing many challenges that make their entry into the market difficult. To overcome these challenges, research has focused on developing MNPs with better safety profiles and enhanced magnetic properties. One particularly important strategy includes doping MNPs (particularly IONPs) with other metallic elements, such as cobalt (Co) and manganese (Mn), to reduce the iron (Fe) content released into the body resulting in the creation of multimodal nanoparticles with unique properties. Another approach includes the development of MNPs using other metals besides Fe, that possess great magnetic or other imaging properties. The future of this field seems to be the production of MNPs which can be used as multipurpose platforms that can combine different uses of MRI or different imaging techniques to design more effective and complete diagnostic tests.

Silica Coating of Ferromagnetic Iron Oxide Magnetic Nanoparticles Significantly Enhances Their Hyperthermia Performances for Efficiently Inducing Cancer Cells Death In Vitro

Increasing the biocompatibility, cellular uptake, and magnetic heating performance of ferromagnetic iron-oxide magnetic nanoparticles (F-MNPs) is clearly required to efficiently induce apoptosis of cancer cells by magnetic hyperthermia (MH). Thus, F-MNPs were coated with silica layers of different thicknesses via a reverse microemulsion method, and their morphological, structural, and magnetic properties were evaluated by multiple techniques. The presence of a SiO2 layer significantly increased the colloidal stability of F-MNPs, which also enhanced their heating performance in water with almost 1000 W/gFe as compared to bare F-MNPs. The silica-coated F-MNPs exhibited biocompatibility of up to 250 μg/cm2 as assessed by Alamar Blues and Neutral Red assays on two cancer cell lines and one normal cell line. The cancer cells were found to internalize a higher quantity of silica-coated F-MNPs, in large endosomes, dispersed in the cytoplasm or inside lysosomes, and hence were more sensitive to in vitro MH treatment compared to the normal ones. Cellular death of more than 50% of the malignant cells was reached starting at a dose of 31.25 μg/cm2 and an amplitude of alternating magnetic field of 30 kA/m at 355 kHz.

Ultra-Fine Control of Silica Shell Thickness on Silver Nanoparticle-Assembled Structures

To study the distance-dependent electromagnetic field effects related to the enhancement and quenching mechanism of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) or fluorescence, it is essential to precisely control the distance from the surface of the metal nanoparticle (NP) to the target molecule by using a dielectric layer (e.g., SiO2, TiO2, and Al2O3). However, precisely controlling the thickness of this dielectric layer is challenging. Herein, we present a facile approach to control the thickness of the silica shell on silver nanoparticle-assembled silica nanocomposites, SiO2@Ag NPs, by controlling the number of reacting SiO2@Ag NPs and the silica precursor. Uniform silica shells with thicknesses in the range 5-40 nm were successfully fabricated. The proposed method for creating a homogeneous, precise, and fine silica coating on nanocomposites can potentially contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the distance-dependent electromagnetic field effects and optical properties of metal NPs.

Magnetic Nanoparticles Used in Oncology

Recently, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have more and more often been used in experimental studies on cancer treatments, which have become one of the biggest challenges in medical research. The main goal of this research is to treat and to cure advanced or metastatic cancer with minimal side effects through nanotechnology. Drug delivery approaches take into account the fact that MNPs can be bonded to chemotherapeutical drugs, nucleic acids, synthetized antibodies or radionuclide substances. MNPs can be guided, and different treatment therapies can be applied, under the influence of an external magnetic field. This paper reviews the main MNPs’ synthesis methods, functionalization with different materials and highlight the applications in cancer therapy. In this review, we describe cancer cell monitorization based on different types of magnetic nanoparticles, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, magnetic hyperthermia, gene therapy and ferroptosis. Examples of applied treatments on murine models or humans are analyzed, and glioblastoma cancer therapy is detailed in the review. MNPs have an important contribution to diagnostics, investigation, and therapy in the so called theranostics domain. The main conclusion of this paper is that MNPs are very useful in different cancer therapies, with limited side effects, and they can increase the life expectancy of patients with cancer drug resistance.

Improved Solvothermal Synthesis of γ-Fe2O3 Magnetic Nanoparticles for SiO2 Coating

Monodisperse magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared by a simple, improved, one-pot solvothermal synthesis using SDS and PEG 6000 as double capping reagents. This double protecting layer afforded better MNP uniformity (Z average 257 ± 11.12 nm, PDI = 0.18) and colloidal stability. Materials were characterized by DLS, SEM, TEM, XPS, and XRD. The use of these MNPs in the synthesis of core-shell structures with uniform and tunable silica coatings was demonstrated, as silica coated MNPs are important for use in a range of applications, including magnetic separation and catalysis and as platforms for templated nanogel synthesis.

Recent Advancements of Specific Functionalized Surfaces of Magnetic Nano- and Microparticles as a Theranostics Source in Biomedicine

Magnetic nano- and microparticles (MNMPs) belong to a highly versatile class of colloids with actuator and sensor properties that have been broadly studied for their application in theranostics such as molecular imaging and drug delivery. The use of advanced biocompatible, biodegradable polymers and polyelectrolytes as MNMP coating materials is essential to ensure the stability of MNMPs and enable efficient drug release while at the same time preventing cytotoxic effects. In the past years, huge progress has been made in terms of the design of MNMPs. Especially, the understanding of coating formation with respect to control of drug loading and release kinetics on the molecular level has significantly advanced. In this review, recent advancements in the field of MNMP surface engineering and the applicability of MNMPs in research fields of medical imaging, diagnosis, and nanotherapeutics are presented and discussed. Furthermore, in this review the main emphasis is put on the manipulation of biological specimens and cell trafficking, for which MNMPs represent a favorable tool enabling transport processes of drugs through cell membranes. Finally, challenges and future perspectives for applications of MNMPs as theranostic nanomaterials are discussed.

Advanced Functional Nanostructures based on Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanomaterials for Water Remediation: A Review

The fast growth of industrialization combined with the increasing population has led to an unparalleled demand for providing water in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective way, which has become one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century faced by global society. The application of nanotechnology in water treatment and pollution cleanup is a promising alternative in order to overcome the current limitations. In particular, the application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) for environmental remediation has currently received remarkable attention due to its unique combination of physicochemical and magnetic properties. Given the broadening use of these functional engineered nanomaterials, there is a growing concern about the adverse effects upon exposure of products and by-products to the environment. This makes vitally relevant the development of green chemistry in the synthesis processes combined with a trustworthy risk assessment of the nanotoxicity of MIONs as the scientific knowledge of the potential hazard of nanomaterials remains limited. This work provides comprehensive coverage of the recent progress on designing and developing iron oxide-based nanomaterials through a green synthesis strategy, including the use of benign solvents and ligands. Despite the limitations of nanotoxicity and environmental risks of iron oxide-based nanoparticles for the ecosystem, this critical review presents a contribution to the emerging knowledge concerning the theoretical and experimental studies on the toxicity of MIONs. Potential improvement of applications of advanced iron oxide-based hybrid nanostructures in water treatment and pollution control is also addressed in this review.

Application of Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles grafted in silica (SiO2) for oil recovery from oil in water emulsions

In this study, an innovative magnetic demulsifier (MD) was prepared by grafting a silica layer onto the surface of the Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) using the modified Stober process. The MD was characterized using various analytical techniques (XRD, FTIR, TGA, TEM, VSM, etc.) and employed to recover oil from O/W emulsion, which were then regenerated and recycled several times. The effects of magnetic demulsifier dosage (MD_dose), the concentration of oil (C_oil), pH, the concentration of the surfactant (C_sur), and separation time (t_sep) on the demulsification efficiency (%η_dem), and the percentage of oil recovered (%R_oil) were evaluated. An excellent %η_dem ≥ 90% was achieved C_oil in the range 50-2000 mg/L. Using an MD_dose as low as 10 mg/L attained a %η_dem in the range of 93%-94.3% for O/W mixtures with C_oil < 2000 mg/L, which slightly decreased to ∼90% for higher concentrations. The reported %R_oil (p-value <0.05) was >90 ± 0.1 for tests carried out with pH ≤ 7 and C_sur ≤ 0.1 g/L and declined at higher pH and C_sur to % 86.5 due to the increase in emulsion stability. The developed MD exhibited high recyclability at an effective and stable %R_oil and %η_dem of ∼90% and 86.4% after 9 cycles, respectively. Demulsification process best fits the combined Langmuir-Freundlich (L-F) isotherm with highest adsorption capacity (Q_max) of 186.0 ± 5 mg_oil/g_MD compared to 86.0 ± 5 mg_oil/g_MD for Fe₃O₄, which is 1.1 folds greater than Q_max reported in the literature for other demulsifiers.

Synthesis and Cytotoxicity Study of Magnetite Nanoparticles Coated with Polyethylene Glycol and Sorafenib-Zinc/Aluminium Layered Double Hydroxide

In the last two decades, the development of novel approaches for cancer treatment has attracted intense attention due to the growing number of patients and the inefficiency of the available current conventional treatments. In this study, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were synthesized by the co-precipitation method in an alkaline medium. Then the nanoparticles were chemically modified by coating them with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sorafenib (SO)-zinc/aluminum layered double hydroxide (ZLDH) to improve their biocompatibility. The SPIONs and their coated and drug-loaded nanoparticles, M-PEG-SO-ZLDH are of the crystalline phase with the presence of C, O, Al, Fe, Cl, Zn in the latter, indicating the presence of the coating layers on the surface of the SPIONs. The superparamagnetic properties of the bare SPIONs were found to be reduced but retained in its coated drug delivery nanoparticles, M-PEG-SO-ZLDH. The latter has an average particle size of 16 nm and the release of the drug from it was found to be governed by the pseudo-second-order kinetic. The cytotoxicity and biocompatibility evaluation of the drug-loaded magnetic nanoparticles using 3T3 and HepG2 cells using the diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays shows that the synthesized nanoparticles were less toxic than the pure drug. This preliminary study indicates that the prepared nanoparticles are suitable to be used for the drug delivery system.

Impacts of Magnetic Immobilization on the Recombinant Proteins Structure Produced in Pichia pastoris System

Pichia pastoris expression system was introduced with post-translation process similar to higher eukaryotes. Preliminary studies were performed toward process intensification and magnetic immobilization of this system. In this experiment, effects of magnetic immobilization on the structure of recombinant protein were evaluated. P. pastoris cell which express human serum albumin (HSA) was used as a model. The cells were immobilized with various concentrations of APTES coated magnetite nanoparticles. HSA production was done over 5 days induction and structure of the product was analyzed by UV-vis, fluorescence, and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Second derivative deconvolution method was used to analyze the secondary structure of HSA. P. pastoris cell that were immobilized with 0.5 and 1 mg/mL of nanoparticles were produced HSA with intact structure. But immobilization with 2 mg/mL of nanoparticles resulted in some modifications in the secondary structures (i.e., α-helixes and β-turns) of produced HSA. Based on these data, immobilization of P. pastoris cells with 0.5 or 1 mg/mL of nanoparticles is completely efficient for cell harvesting and has any effect on the structure of recombinant product. These findings revealed that decoration of microbial cells with high concentrations of nanoparticles has some impacts on the structure of secretory proteins.

Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of Tryptophan Using a Hemin/G-Quadruplex Aptasensor

In this study, we design an electrochemical aptasensor with an enzyme-free amplification method to detect tryptophan (Trp). For the amplified electrochemical signal, the screen-printed electrode was modified with dendritic gold nanostructures (DGNs)/magnetic double-charged diazoniabicyclo [2.2.2] octane dichloride silica hybrid (Fe3O4@SiO2/DABCO) to increase the surface area as well as electrical conductivity, and the hemin/G-quadruplex aptamer was immobilized. The presence of Trp improved the catalytic characteristic of hemin/G-quadruplex structure, which resulted in the efficient catalysis of the H2O2 reduction. As the concentration of Trp increased, the intensity of H2O2 reduction signal increased, and Trp was measured in the range of 0.007–200 nM with a detection limit of 0.002 nM. Compared with previous models, our sensor displayed higher detection sensitivity and specificity for Trp. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the proposed aptasensor successfully determined Trp in human serum samples, thereby proving its practical applicability.

Facile Histamine Detection by Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering using SiO2@Au@Ag Alloy Nanoparticles

Histamine intoxication associated with seafood consumption represents a global health problem. The consumption of high concentrations of histamine can cause illnesses ranging from light symptoms, such as a prickling sensation, to death. In this study, gold-silver alloy-embedded silica (SiO2@Au@Ag) nanoparticles were created to detect histamine using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The optimal histamine SERS signal was measured following incubation with 125 μg/mL of SiO2@Au@Ag for 2 h, with a material-to-histamine solution volume ratio of 1:5 and a phosphate-buffered saline-Tween 20 (PBS-T) solvent at pH 7. The SERS intensity of the histamine increased proportionally with the increase in histamine concentration in the range 0.1-0.8 mM, with a limit of detection of 3.698 ppm. Our findings demonstrate the applicability of SERS using nanomaterials for histamine detection. In addition, this study demonstrates that nanoalloys could have a broad application in the future.
