The Effect of Different Coupling Agents on Nano-ZnO Materials Obtained via the Sol-Gel Process

The Impact of ZnO Nanofillers on the Mechanical and Anti-Corrosion Performances of Epoxy Composites

Epoxy resins were reinforced with different ZnO nanofillers (commercial ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), recycled ZnO and functionalized ZnO NPs) in order to obtain ZnO-epoxy composites with suitable mechanical properties, high adhesion strength, and good resistance to corrosion. The final properties of ZnO-epoxy composites depend on several factors, such as the type and contents of nanofillers, the epoxy resin type, curing agent, and preparation methods. This paper aims to review the preparation methods, mechanical and anti-corrosion performance, and applications of ZnO-epoxy composites. The epoxy-ZnO composites are demonstrated to be valuable materials for a wide range of applications, including the development of anti-corrosion and UV-protective coatings, for adhesives and the chemical industry, or for use in building materials or electronics.

Surface-Modified Diopside-Reinforced PCL Biopolymer Composites with Enhanced Interfacial Strength and Mechanical Properties for Orthopedic Applications

The phase separation of ceramics in a biopolymer matrix makes it challenging to achieve satisfactory mechanical properties required for orthopedic applications. It has been found that silane coupling agents can modify the surface of the bioceramic phase by forming a molecular bridge between the polymer and the ceramic, resulting in improved interfacial strength and adhesion. Therefore, in the present study, silane-modified diopside (DI) ceramic and ε-polycaprolactone (PCL) biopolymer composites were fabricated by injection molding method. The silane modification of DI resulted in their uniform dispersion in the PCL matrix, whereas agglomeration was found in composites containing unmodified DI. The thermal stability of the silane-modified DI-containing composites also increased. The Young's modulus of the composite containing 50% w/w DI modified by 3% w/w silane increased by 103% compared to composites containing 50% w/w unmodified DI. The biodegradation of the unmodified composites was significantly high, indicating their weak interfacial strength with the PCL matrix (p ≤ 0.001). The osteoconductive behavior of the composites was also validated by in vitro cell-material studies. Overall, our findings supported that the silane-modified composites have improved surface roughness, mechanical, and osteoconductive properties compared to the unmodified composite and have the potential for orthopedic applications.

Nacre-inspired composite paper of PVA crosslinked basalt scale and nanocellulose with enhanced mechanical, electrical insulating and ultraviolet-resistant aging performance

Silicate scales are commonly incorporated into cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as functional fillers to enhance electrical insulation and UV-shielding properties. Nevertheless, the addition of substantial quantities of silicate scales in the quest for enhanced functional properties results in reduced interface bonding capability and compromised mechanical properties, thereby restricting their application. Here, inspired from nacre, layered composite paper with excellent mechanical strength, electrical insulation and UV-resistance properties was fabricated through vacuum assisted self-assembly using CNF, PVA and basalt scales (BS). Unlike the conventional blending strategy, the pre-mixed PVA and BS suspension facilitates the formation of Al-O-C bond, thereby enhancing the interfacial bonding between BS and CNF. Consequently, the composite paper (BS@PVA/PVA/CNF) containing 60 wt% BS demonstrates higher mechanical strength-approximately 140 % higher than that of BS/CNF composite paper, achieving a strength of 33.5 MPa. Additionally, it demonstrates enhanced dielectric properties, surpassing those of CNF paper by up to 107 %. Moreover, it exhibits robust ultraviolet-resistant aging performance, retaining ~87 % of its tensile strength after undergoing a simulated two-year aging period. As a result, this work presents a simple and innovative design strategy for enhancing interfacial bonding and optimizing layer structure, providing essential guidelines for large-scale production of high-performance insulation and aging-resistant composite paper.

Enabling high rate capability and stability all-solid-state batteries via cationic surfactant modification of composite electrolyte

The garnet-type solid electrolyte Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) was modified with a cationic surfactant Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) to improve the dispersion of LLZTO inorganic particles in Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolyte (PEO-LLZTO@CTAB) by a liquid phase casting method. During fabrication, the cationic modifier CTAB is uniformly adsorbed on the surface of LLZTO particles, which can effectively reduce their surface energy and lead to a thin CTAB surface coating layer. This fabricated PEO-LLZTO@CTAB can avoid the aggregation of LLZTO particles in the composite solid-state electrolyte (CSSE) and improve the interfacial contact at the PEO/LLZTO interface, thus reducing the overall resistance of PEO-LLZTO@CTAB/Li half-cell and inhibiting the dendrite growth during cycling. The all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) with LiFePO4 (LFP) as the cathode, PEO-LLZTO@CTAB as the electrolyte and Li as the anode exhibit a high initial discharge capacity of 146.6 mAh-g-1, excellent rate performance and high-capacity retention of 91.0 % after 300 cycles at 0.2 C multiplier and 60 °C within the voltage range of 2.7-4.0 V.

The influence of silane coupling agents on the properties of α-TCP-based ceramic bone substitutes for orthopaedic applications

Biomaterials based on α-TCP are highly recommended for medical applications due to their ability to bond chemically with bone tissue. However, in order to improve their physicochemical properties, modifications are needed. In this work, novel, hybrid α-TCP-based bone cements were developed and examinated. The influence of two different silane coupling agents (SCAs) - tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) on the properties of the final materials was investigated. Application of modifiers allowed us to obtain hybrid materials due to the presence of different bonds in their structure, for example between calcium phosphates and SCA molecules. The use of SCAs increased the compressive strength of the bone cements from 7.24 ± 0.35 MPa to 12.17 ± 0.48 MPa. Moreover, modification impacted the final setting time of the cements, reducing it from 11.0 to 6.5 minutes. The developed materials displayed bioactive potential in simulated body fluid. Presented findings demonstrate the beneficial influence of silane coupling agents on the properties of calcium phosphate-based bone substitutes and pave the way for their further in vitro and in vivo studies.

Antibacterial Activity of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Loaded with Essential Oils

One major problem with the overuse of antibiotics is that the microorganisms acquire resistance; thus the dose must be increased unsustainably. To overcome this problem, researchers from around the world are actively investigating new types of antimicrobials. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been proven to exhibit strong antimicrobial effects; moreover, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) considers ZnO as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). Many essential oils have antimicrobial activity and their components do not generate resistance over time. One of the drawbacks is the high volatility of some components, which diminishes the antimicrobial action as they are eliminated. The combination of ZnO NPs and essential oils can synergistically produce a stronger antimicrobial effect, and some of the volatile compounds can be retained on the nanoparticles' surface, ensuring a better-lasting antimicrobial effect. The samples were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and thermal analysis (TG-DSC) coupled with analysis of evolved gases using FTIR. The ZnO NPs, with a size of ~35 nm, exhibited a loading between 1.44% and 15.62%-the lower values were specific for limonene-containing oils (e.g., orange, grapefruit, bergamot, or limette), while high values were obtained from cinnamon, minzol, thyme, citronella, and lavender oils-highlighting differences among non-polar terpenes and alcohol or aldehyde derivatives. The antibacterial assay indicated the existence of a synergic action among components and a high dependency on the percentage of loaded oil. Loaded nanoparticles offer immense potential for the development of materials with specific applications, such as wound dressings or food packaging. These nanoparticles can be utilized in scenarios where burst delivery is desired or when prolonged antibacterial activity is sought.

Emerging aspects of metal ions-doped zinc oxide photocatalysts in degradation of organic dyes and pharmaceutical pollutants - A review

In recent periods, a broad assortment of continual organic contaminants has been released into our natural water resources. Indeed, it is exceedingly poisonous and perilous to living things; thus, the elimination of these organic pollutants before release into the water bodies is vital. A variety of techniques have been utilized to remove these organic pollutants with advanced oxidation photocatalytic methods with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles being commonly used as a capable catalyst for contaminated water treatment. Nevertheless, its broad energy gap, which can be only stimulated under an ultraviolet (UV) light source, and high recombination pairs of electrons and holes limit their photocatalytic behaviors. However, numerous methods have been suggested to decrease its energy gap for visible regions. Including, the doping ZnO with metal ions (dopant) can be considered as an effectual route not only the reason for a movement of the absorption edges toward the higher (visible light) region but also to lower the electron-hole pair (e--h+) recombination. This review concentrated on the impact of dissimilar types of metal ions (dopants) on the advancement in the degradation performance of ZnO. So, this work demonstrates a vital review of contemporary attainments in the alteration of ZnO nanoparticles for organic pollutants eliminations. Besides, the effect of doping ions including transition metals, rare earth metals, and metal ions (substitutional and interstitial) concerning numerous types of altered ZnO are summarized. The photodegradation mechanisms for pristine and metal-modified ZnO nanoparticles are also conferred.

Sargassum natans I Algae: An Alternative for a Greener Approach for the Synthesis of ZnO Nanostructures with Biological and Environmental Applications

In this work, the influence of the Sargassum natans I alga extract on the morphological characteristics of synthesized ZnO nanostructures, with potential biological and environmental applications, was evaluated. For this purpose, different ZnO geometries were synthesized by the co-precipitation method, using Sargassum natans I alga extract as stabilizing agent. Four extract volumes (5, 10, 20, and 50 mL) were evaluated to obtain the different nanostructures. Moreover, a sample by chemical synthesis, without the addition of extract, was prepared. The characterization of the ZnO samples was carried out by UV-Vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the Sargassum alga extract has a fundamental role in the stabilization process of the ZnO nanoparticles. In addition, it was shown that the increase in the Sargassum alga extract leads to preferential growth and arrangement, obtaining well-defined shaped particles. ZnO nanostructures demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory response by the in vitro egg albumin protein denaturation for biological purposes. Additionally, quantitative antibacterial analysis (AA) showed that the ZnO nanostructures synthesized with 10 and 20 mL of extract demonstrated high AA against Gram (+) S. aureus and moderate AA behavior against Gram (-) P. aeruginosa, depending on the ZnO arrangement induced by the Sargassum natans I alga extract and the nanoparticles' concentration (ca. 3200 µg/mL). Additionally, ZnO samples were evaluated as photocatalytic materials through the degradation of organic dyes. Complete degradation of both methyl violet and malachite green were achieved using the ZnO sample synthesized with 50 mL of extract. In all cases, the well-defined morphology of ZnO induced by the Sargassum natans I alga extract played a key role in the combined biological/environmental performance.

Oil/Water Mixtures and Emulsions Separation Methods-An Overview

Catastrophic oil spill accidents, oily industrial wastewater, and other types of uncontrolled release of oils into the environment are major global issues since they threaten marine ecosystems and lead to a big economic impact. It can also affect the public health of communities near the polluted area. This review addresses the different types of oil collecting methods. The focus of this work will be on the different approaches to materials and technologies for oil/water separation, with a special focus on water/oil emulsion separation. Emulsified oil/water mixtures are extremely stable dispersions being, therefore, more difficult to separate as the size of the droplets in the emulsion decreases. Oil-absorbent materials, such as sponges, foams, nanoparticles, and aerogels, can be adjusted to have both hydrophobic and oleophilic wettability while displaying a porous structure. This can be advantageous for targeting oil spills in large-scale environmental and catastrophic sets since these materials can easily absorb oil. Oil adsorbent materials, for example, meshes, textiles, membranes, and clays, involve the capture of the oily material to the surface of the adsorbent material, additionally attracting more attention than other technologies by being low-cost and easy to manufacture.

Fabrication, thermal analysis, and heavy ion irradiation resistance of epoxy matrix nanocomposites loaded with silane-functionalized ceria nanoparticles

This paper describes a detailed understanding of how nanofillers function as radiation barriers within the polymer matrix, and how their effectiveness is impacted by factors such as composition, size, loading, surface chemistry, and dispersion. We designed a comprehensive investigation of heavy ion irradiation resistance in epoxy matrix composites loaded with surface-modified ceria nanofillers, utilizing tandem computational and experimental methods to elucidate radiolytic damage processes and relate them to chemical and structural changes observed through thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. A detailed mechanistic examination supported by FTIR spectroscopy data identified the bisphenol A moiety as a primary target for degradation reactions. Results of computational modeling by the Stopping Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) Monte Carlo simulation were in good agreement with damage analysis from surface and cross-sectional SEM imaging. All metrics indicated that ceria nanofillers reduce the damage area in polymer nanocomposites, and that nanofiller loading and homogeneity of dispersion are key to effective damage prevention. The results of this study represent a significant pathway for engineered irradiation tolerance in a diverse array of polymer nanocomposite materials. Numerous areas of materials science can benefit from utilizing this facile and effective method to extend the reliability of polymer materials.

Physicochemical and Morphological Properties of Hybrid Films Containing Silver-Based Silica Materials Deposited on Glass Substrates

The main goal of this study was to present a facile and inexpensive approach for the preparation of hybrid coatings by the deposition under ambient air conditions of silver-based silica materials on glass substrates, which can be used to improve solar cells’ performance. The silica materials containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by the hydrolytic condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), triethoxymethylsilane (MTES), and trimethoxyhexadecylsilane (HDTMES), under acidic conditions, at room temperature (25 ± 2 °C). The silver nitrate solution (AgNO3, 0.1 wt. %) was used as a source of Ag+ ions. The final samples were investigated through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy–Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR–ATR), Transmission Electron Microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X–ray (TEM–EDX), UV–Vis spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Raman Spectroscopy (RS). The TEM images confirmed the formation of AgNPs and were found to be around 3 nm. It was observed that AgNPs were embedded in the silica matrix. EDX also confirmed the presence of the resulting AgNPs within the silica material. AFM images demonstrated that the morphology of the hybrid films’ surfaces can be changed as a function of sol–gel composition. RS analysis indicated that silanol groups were significantly present on the silver-based silica film surface. The UV–Vis spectra revealed that the hybrid coatings presented a reflectance of ~8%, at 550 nm. This study will enhance the value of nanocoating technology in optoelectronics, particularly in the development of nanostructures that improve the performance in thin-film solar cells.

Bioactive properties of ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using Cocos nucifera leaves

Biosynthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles has been reported using Cocos nucifera leaf (CNL) extract along with estimation of their antimicrobial potential before and after calcination using different micro-organisms. UV-visible spectra of ZnO nanoparticles showed absorption maxima at 383 nm and 363 nm, respectively, with 3.237 eV and 3.416 eV, respectively, as the corresponding band gap energies. FESEM and TEM images showed spherical morphologies of ZnO nanoparticles within the size range 109-215 nm. XRD analysis confirmed the formation of hexagonal wurtzite structures. ATR-IR spectra revealed the presence of stretching vibrations of N-H, O-H, C=C, C=O and NH2 groups along with C-H and N-H deformation involving biomolecules from CNL extract responsible for reduction and stabilization of ZnO nanoparticles. Uncalcinated ZnO nanoparticles displayed antibacterial activities only against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa whereas calcinated ZnO nanoparticles did not show antibacterial activities against E. coli, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and B. subtilis. ZnO nanoparticles were not active against Penicillium spp., Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizoctonia solani as well as HCT-116 cancer cells before as well as after calcination. Antimicrobial nature and biocompatibility of ZnO nanoparticles were influenced by different parameters of the nanoparticles along with micro-organisms and the human cells. Non-antimicrobial properties of ZnO nanoparticles can be treated as a pre-requisite for its biocompatibility due to its inert nature. These ZnO nanoparticles can serve a dual purpose by facilitating use as antibacterial agent against susceptible micro-organisms as well as a biocompatible carrier molecule in drug delivery applications.

Preparation of ZnO nanoparticles modified with silane coupling-agents to fabricate anti-UV Poly(vinyl chloride) films

The uses of inorganic metal oxide as ultraviolet (UV) absorbers have potential to increase the production of UV protection and can also overcome the disadvantages of organic molecules. In this article, we report an effective technique to fabricating polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films with well UV shielding efficiency. Surface modification of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) with different silane coupling-agents were achieved, and through solution casting technique dispersed within the PVC matrix. Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and UV spectrophotometer were applied to study the structures, dispersions, and optical properties. The results showed that the functionalized ZnO NPs could be well dispersed in PVC and endow the polymer composite films with significantly improved anti-UV capability. The facile processing and obtained properties of PVC composites have shown potential for low cost and environmentally sustainable applications in the UV protection field.

Review on Sol-Gel Synthesis of Perovskite and Oxide Nanomaterials

Sol-Gel is a low cost, well-established and flexible synthetic route to produce a wide range of micro- and nanostructures. Small variations in pH, temperature, precursors, time, pressure, atmosphere, among others, can lead to a wide family of compounds that share the same molecular structures. In this work, we present a general review of the synthesis of LaMnO3, SrTiO3, BaTiO3 perovskites and zinc vanadium oxides nanostructures based on Sol-Gel method. We discuss how small changes in the parameters of the synthesis can modify the morphology, shape, size, homogeneity, aggregation, among others, of the products. We also discuss the different precursors, solvents, working temperature, reaction times used throughout the synthesis. In the last section, we present novel uses of Sol-Gel with organic materials with emphasis on carbon-based compounds. All with a perspective to improve the method for future applications in different technological fields.

3-Mercaptopropanoic Acid-Doped Chitosan/Hybrid-Based Multilayer Sol-Gel Coatings for Cu Protection in 3.5% NaCl Solution

In this work, biopolymer based sol-gel was synthesized by doping 3-mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA) with chitosan and a hybrid of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Prepared MPA/hybrid-doped chitosan was applied toa copper (Cu) metal surface by the self-assembly technique to protect the Cu metal from corrosion in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The structure, mechanism and morphology of the modified electrodes were examined using Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The decrease in surface roughness for Hy/chitosan/MPA-coated Cu indicates the formation of a dense layer on Cu metal confirmed by AFM. The corrosion protection evaluation of sol-gel coated electrodes was analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization studies (PDS) in a 3.5% NaCl medium. The MPA/hybrid-doped chitosan sol-gel coated Cu metal showed the greatest resistance to corrosionthanother sol-gel modified electrodes. The MPA-doped-chitosan/Hy sol-gel coating protected the Cu metal by an anodic dissolution process and improved its corrosion protection to 99.9%.

Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanomaterials via Sol-Gel Process with Anti-Corrosive Effect for Cu, Al and Zn Metallic Substrates

Nanosized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles modified with different silane coupling agents (octyltriethoxysilane (OTES), octadecyltriethoxysilane (ODTES) and (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS)) were synthesized in basic catalysis using the sol-gel method. The structure and morphology were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for bonding characteristics. The final hybrid materials were deposited on three types of metallic substrates (aluminum (Al), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn)) in order to obtain coatings with ultrahydrophobic and anti-corrosion properties. Water wettability was studied revealing a contact angle of 145° for the surface covered with ZnO material modified with ODTES. The water contact angle increased with the length of the alkyl chain supplied by the silica precursor. The anti-corrosive behavior of ZnO/silane coupling agents particles deposited on metallic substrates was studied by the linear polarization technique in neutral medium.

Effects of Annealing Temperature on the Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of Copper-Cobalt Oxide Nanosheets

Developing high performance, highly stable, and low-cost electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is challenging in water electrolysis technology. However, Ir- and Ru-based OER catalysts with high OER efficiency are difficult to commercialize as precious metal-based catalysts. Therefore, the study of OER catalysts, which are replaced by non-precious metals and have high activity and stability, are necessary. In this study, a copper–cobalt oxide nanosheet (CCO) electrode was synthesized by the electrodeposition of copper–cobalt hydroxide (CCOH) on Ni foam followed by annealing. The CCOH was annealed at various temperatures, and the structure changed to that of CCO at temperatures above 250 °C. In addition, it was observed that the nanosheets agglomerated when annealed at 300 °C. The CCO electrode annealed at 250 °C had a high surface area and efficient electron conduction pathways as a result of the direct growth on the Ni foam. Thus, the prepared CCO electrode exhibited enhanced OER activity (1.6 V at 261 mA/cm²) compared to those of CCOH (1.6 V at 144 mA/cm²), Co₃O₄ (1.6 V at 39 mA/cm²), and commercial IrO₂ (1.6 V at 14 mA/cm²) electrodes. The optimized catalyst also showed high activity and stability under high pH conditions, demonstrating its potential as a low cost, highly efficient OER electrode material.

Rapid and Selective Biomarker Detection with Conductometric Sensors

The biomarker detection in human body fluids is crucial as biomarkers are important in diagnosing diseases. Conventional invasive techniques for biomarker detection are associated with infection, tissue damage, and discomfort. Non-invasive devices are an attractive alternative. Here, metal oxide (oxygen-deficient zinc oxide, ZnO) based conductometric sensors with two-terminal electrodes for rapid detection of biomarkers in real-time, are presented. This platform can be engineered for non-invasive, sensitive, and on-demand selective detection of biomarkers based on surface functionalization. The three novelties in this biosensing technique include an on-demand target selection device platform, short (<10 min) incubation times, and real-time monitoring of the biomarker of interest by electrical (resistance change) measurements. Cardiac inflammatory biomarkers interleukin 6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are used as the model antigens. The devices can detect 100× lower concentration of IL-6 than healthy levels in human saliva and sweat and 1000× and ≈50× lower CRP concentrations than healthy levels in human saliva and sweat, respectively. The devices show high selectivity for IL-6 and CRP antigens when tested with a mixture of biomarkers. This sensor platform can be extended to selective measurements for viruses or DNA screening, which enables a new category of compact and rapid point-of-care medical devices.

Comparative Study on the Influence of Noble Metal Nanoparticles (Ag, Au, Pd) on the Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO NPs Embedded in Renewable Castor Oil Polymer Matrices

Hybrid polymeric materials, due to the unique combination of properties that can be obtained by the convenient variation of organic and inorganic components, represent an attractive alternative for many applications, especially photocatalysis. Herein, we report the preparation of nanocomposite films containing functionalized ZnO nanoparticles, as well as in situ photogenerated noble metal nanoparticles (Ag, Au, Pd), for the achieving of materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light. The flexible free-standing nanocomposite films were synthesized by photopolymerization of a monomer mixture (silane castor oil urethane dimethacrylate and polypropylene oxide urethane dimethacrylate) in the presence of a Irgacure 819 photoinitiator. The efficiency of ZnO NPs functionalization was established by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis, while the polymer composites were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to evidence the formation, size and distribution of the nanoparticles inside the photocrosslinked matrix. To establish the photocatalytic capacity of nanocomposite films, the decomposition of various pollutants (methyl orange, phenol, metronidazole) was monitored under visible light irradiation, the best results being obtained for Au/ZnO film. Also, the advantage of immobilizing the catalysts in a polymeric support and its recycling ability without a significant decrease in photocatalytic efficiency was analysed.

The Durability of an Organic-Inorganic Sol-Gel Interlayer in Al-GFRP-CFRP Laminates in a Saline Environment

The aim of the study was to assess the selected properties of a hybrid organic-inorganic silane sol-gel coating (HSG) used in hybrid fiber metal laminates (FML) in a corrosion environment. The HSG coating on the aluminum alloy was produced using 3M™ AC130-2 formulation consisting of 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and tetra-n-propoxyzirconium (zirconium(IV) propoxide) (TPOZ). Laminates consisted of aluminum alloy AA2024-T3 sheets, with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) and a glass fiber reinforced metal-composite structure (GFRP). Potentiodynamic and polarization curve and impedance (EIS) tests were carried out on HSG at ambient temperatures after 1 h and 150 h of soaking. Neutral 0.5 M NaCl and 0.8 M NaCl solutions were used for open circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic tests, and 0.5 NaCl was used for the EIS test. A neutral salt spray (NSS) test was applied to laminates with a 12 week exposure period. The results obtained revealed that the HSG coating did not provide sufficient protection against corrosion of the aluminum alloy in direct contact with an aggressive environment but was effective as an interlayer. Local aluminum sheet perforation did not lead to delamination at the metal-composite interface regardless of the type or configuration of the composite. This confirms the durability of HSG used in FMLs.

Fabrication of nano CuAl2O4 spinel for copper stabilization and antibacterial application

With widely reported antibacterial potential, the copper-containing nanoparticles have become attractive antibacterial agents to prohibit the undesirable bacterial adhesion and growth. However, after applying the copper-containing agents in the environment, the potential leaching and bioaccumulation of copper ions may cause severe environmental contamination and irreversible health problems. Therefore, the nano CuAl₂O₄ spinel was fabricated as a novel copper-stabilized antibacterial agent with much minimized copper leachability. Results show the successful fabrication of nano CuAl₂O₄ spinel as well-shaped polyhedral particles with maximum length of ˜100 nm and width of ˜50 nm. The optimal parameters for the synthesis of CuAl₂O₄ include pH value of 11.0, sintering temperature of 1000 °C, dwelling time of 3 h, and the heating rate of 5 °C/min. The leaching test also confirmed the superiority of the nano CuAl₂O₄ in copper stabilization. The beneficial antibacterial activity of the nano CuAl₂O₄ was further testified by an obvious decrease in the amount of Escherichia coli in a medium with addition of the CuAl₂O₄ spinel. Besides the growth mechanisms of the nano-particles, this work has also innovatively demonstrated a strategy to replace the traditional antibacterial agents by a novel, long-lasting nano CuAl₂O₄ with little copper leachability.

UV-Curable Hydrophobic Coatings of Functionalized Carbon Microspheres with Good Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance

Polyurethane acrylates (PUAs) are a kind of UV curable prepolymer with excellent comprehensive performance. However, PUAs are highly hydrophilic and when applied outdoors, presenting serious problems caused by rain such as discoloring, losing luster and blistering. Thus, it’s important to improve their hydrophobicity and resistance against corrosion. In this paper, carbon microspheres (CMSs) were modified through chemical grafting method. Active double bonds were introduced onto the surface of organic carbon microspheres (OCMSs) and the functional product was referred to as FCMS. The results of Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that organic chain segments were successfully connected to the surface of OCMSs and the grafting efficiency was as high as 16%. FCMSs were successfully added into UV-curable polyurethane acrylate prepolymer to achieve a hydrophobic coating layer with good mechanical properties, thermal stability and corrosion resistance. When the addition of FCMSs were 1%, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that 5% of the initial mass was lost at 297 °C. The water absorption decreased from 52% to 38% and the water contact angle of the PUA composite increased from 72° to 106°. The pencil hardness increased to 4H and obvious crack termination phenomenon was observed in SEM images. Moreover, the corrosion rate was decreased from 0.124 to 0.076 mm/a.

Synthesis and Characterization of Hollow Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Smart Corrosion Protection

Different approaches have been considered for the development of smart anticorrosive coatings by the incorporation of nanocontainers loaded with corrosion inhibitors into the protective layer. Nanocontainers are designed to allow a controlled release of the inhibitor in response to an external stimulus, thus, achieving more efficient and more economical use of the active component. In this case, a pH change is a very interesting stimulus to trigger the release because corrosion processes cause local pH changes. To this end, a special focus has been placed on the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) as nanocontainers due to their interesting characteristics, such as larger surface area, versatile functionalisation, stability, etc. However, the use of hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSN), with a large central hole combined with an external mesoporous silica shell, offers an additional advantage due to the higher loading capacity. In the present work, HMSN have been efficiently synthesised, loaded with sodium phosphomolybdate, as a non-toxic alternative to the use of chromates, and encapsulated by a layer of an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA). The morphology and textural properties of the produced nanocapsules have been studied by different techniques (SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, Brunauer⁻Emmett⁻Teller (BET) analysis method, ζ-potential). Finally, the releasing capacity and corrosion protection at different pH values have been studied, confirming the smart behaviour of the encapsulated loaded HMSN.
