Abstract
Dietary fiber confers multiple health benefits originating from the expansion of beneficial gut microbial activity. However, very few studies have established the metabolic consequences of interactions among specific fibers, microbiome composition, and function in either human or representative animal models. In a study design reflective of realistic population dietary variation, fecal metagenomic and metabolomic profiles were analyzed from healthy dogs fed 12 test foods containing different fiber sources and quantities (5-13% as-fed basis). Taxa and functions were identified whose abundances were associated either with overall fiber intake or with specific fiber compositions. Fourteen microbial species were significantly enriched in response to ≥1 specific fiber source; enrichment of fiber-derived metabolites was more pronounced in response to these fiber sources. Positively associated fecal metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, acylglycerols, fiber bound sugars, and polyphenols, co-occurred with microbes enriched in specific food groups. Critically, the specific metabolite pools responsive to differential fiber intake were dependent on differences both in individual microbial community membership and in overall ecological configuration. This helps to explain, for the first time, differences in microbiome-diet associations observed in companion animal epidemiology. Thus, our study corroborates findings in human cohorts and reinforces the role of personalized microbiomes even in seemingly phenotypically homogeneous subjects. IMPORTANCE Consumption of dietary fiber changes the composition of the gut microbiome and, to a larger extent, the associated metabolites. Production of health-relevant metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids from fiber depends both on the consumption of a specific fiber and on the enrichment of beneficial metabolite-producing species in response to it. Even in a seemingly homogeneous population, the benefit received from fiber consumption is personalized and emphasizes specific fiber-microbe-host interactions. These observations are relevant for both population-wide and personalized nutrition applications.

Abstract
Prebiotics are nondigestible components that comprise short-chain carbohydrates, primarily oligosaccharides, which are converted into beneficial compounds by probiotics. Various plant substances with prebiotic properties provide substantial health benefits and are used to prevent different diseases and for medical and clinical applications. Consuming prebiotics gives impeccable benefits since it aids in gut microbial balance. Prebiotic research is primarily concerned with the influence of intestinal disorders. The proposed review will describe recent data on the sources, structures, implementation of prebiotics and potential mechanisms in preventing and treating various disorders, with an emphasis on the gut microbiome. Prebiotics have a distinctive impact on the gastro intestine by explicitly encouraging the growth of probiotic organisms like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. This in turn augments the body's inherent ability to fend off harmful pathogens. Prebiotic carbohydrates may also provide other non-specific advantages due to their fermentation in the large intestine. Additional in vivo research is needed to fully comprehend the interactions between prebiotics and probiotics ingested by hosts to improve their nutritional and therapeutic benefits.

Abstract
The physical modification of starch to produce resistant starch (RS) is a viable strategy for the glycemic index (GI) lowering of foods and functionality improvement in starchy food products. RS cannot be digested in the small intestine but can be fermented in the colon to produce short-chain fatty acids rather than being broken down by human digestive enzymes into glucose. This provides major health advantages, like better blood sugar regulation, weight control, and a lower chance of chronic illnesses. This article provides a concise review of the recent developments in physical starch modification techniques, including annealing, extrusion, high-pressure processing, radiation, and heat-moisture treatment. Specifically, the focus of this paper is on the alteration of the crystalline structure of starch caused by the heat-moisture treatment and annealing and its impact on the resistance of starch to enzymatic hydrolysis, as well as the granular structure and molecular arrangement of starch caused by extrusion and high-pressure processing, and the depolymerization and crosslinking that results from radiation. The impacts of these alterations on starch's textural qualities, stability, and shelf life are also examined. This review demonstrates how physically modified resistant starch can be used as a flexible food ingredient with both functional and health benefits. These methods are economically and ecologically sustainable since they successfully raise the RS content and improve its functional characteristics without the need for chemical reagents. The thorough analysis of these methods and how they affect the structural characteristics and health advantages of RS emphasizes the material's potential as an essential component in the creation of functional foods that satisfy contemporary dietary and health requirements.

Abstract
Abrupt dietary change can disrupt the intestinal balance in felines. This study aimed to assess the impact of heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7347 combined with Fibersol-2 on the intestinal health of adult cats before and after dietary change. We selected 24 British shorthair cats, dividing them into two groups. From day 1 to day 14, the control group received a lower protein (33%) concentration (LPF) diet, while the treated group received the same LPF diet supplemented with 0.16% functional additives, consisting of Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7347 combined with Fibersol-2. Subsequently, from day 15 to day 28, the control group transitioned to a higher protein (40%) concentration (HPF) diet, while the treated group received the same HPF diet supplemented with 0.16% functional additives. Blood and fresh feces were collected on day 0, 14, 17, 21, and 28 of the experiment. The results suggest that the use of heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7347 combined with Fibersol-2 may improve gastrointestinal function in cats by reducing serum LPS levels and fecal pH, while increasing fecal sIgA levels. In addition, the functional additive regulates the fecal microbiota and its function, promoting intestinal homeostasis and colonization with beneficial bacteria such as Blautia. Furthermore, on day 28, there was a significant difference in fecal microbiota beta diversity between the two groups. In summary, the addition of heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7347 combined with Fibersol-2 contributes to improving the intestinal health of adult cats affected by abrupt dietary change.

Abstract
Dietary fibers are associated with favorable gastrointestinal, immune, and metabolic health outcomes when consumed at sufficient levels. Despite the well-described benefits of dietary fibers, children and adolescents continue to fall short of daily recommended levels. This gap in fiber intake (i.e., "fiber gap") might increase the risk of developing early-onset pediatric obesity and obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus into adulthood. The structure-dependent physicochemical properties of dietary fiber are diverse. Differences in solubility, viscosity, water-holding capacity, binding capability, bulking effect, and fermentability influence the physiological effects of dietary fibers that aid in regulating appetite, glycemic and lipidemic responses, and inflammation. Of growing interest is the fermentation of fibers by the gut microbiota, which yields both beneficial and less favorable end-products such as short-chain fatty acids (e.g., acetate, propionate, and butyrate) that impart metabolic and immunomodulatory properties, and gases (e.g., hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane) that cause gastrointestinal symptoms, respectively. This narrative review summarizes (1) the implications of fibers on the gut microbiota and the pathophysiology of pediatric obesity, (2) some factors that potentially contribute to the fiber gap with an emphasis on undesirable gastrointestinal symptoms, (3) some methods to alleviate fiber-induced symptoms, and (4) the therapeutic potential of whole foods and commonly marketed fiber supplements for improved health in pediatric obesity.

Abstract
In this era of pandemics, reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases (LRD) by functional foods is of paramount importance. The conventional process of functional food development almost invariably involves in vitro, animal, and human intervention trials, but differences in intestinal environments between humans and experimental animals make it difficult to develop functional foods that are truly effective in humans. Thus, it is necessary to construct a model that simulates the human intestinal environment to evaluate the functionality of any food component before subjecting it to a human intervention trial. In this review, we provide an overview of a model simulating human intestinal microbiota constructed at Kobe University and its use as a tool to identify food components that contribute to the prevention and treatment of LRD.

Abstract
Betacyanin can be found in the peel or pulp of dragon fruit. As a natural pigment, betacyanin is unstable, so it requires encapsulation technology to maintain its quality. The stability of encapsulated betacyanin from dragon fruit peel compared to dragon fruit pulp has yet to be discovered. This study aims to compare the stability of encapsulated betacyanin (with maltodextrin and gum Arabic) from dragon fruit peel and pulp dried with vacuum drying. Dragon fruit peel extraction utilized a 50% aqueous ethanol solvent, while pulp juice extraction was performed. The ratio of dragon fruit extract to coating materials was set at 1:3 (solid/solid). Research shows that dragon fruit juice powder had higher stability and phytochemical concentrations than the ethanol extract of dragon fruit peel powder during 30 days of storage. Despite similar color stability (similar range value of ΔE), the color from dragon fruit juice powder more closely resembled the natural fruit, albeit with weaker antioxidant activity than the peel powder. Betacyanin concentration in juice powder was notably higher (82.56-156.82 μg/g) than in the ethanol extract of dragon fruit peel powder (52.51-75.12 μg/g). A combination of maltodextrin and Arabic gum (1:1) as coating materials demonstrated the highest concentrations of total phenolic and total betacyanin (81.15-95.87 mg/g and 121.91-156.82 μg/g, respectively) during the storage period. These findings contribute to our comprehension of betacyanin stability and functionality, facilitating precise applications in industrial processing environments based on their source attributes.

Abstract
Resistant dextrin or resistant maltodextrin (RD), a short-chain glucose polymer that is highly resistant to hydrolysis by human digestive enzymes, has shown broad developmental prospects in the food industry and has gained substantial attention owing to its lack of undesirable effects on the sensory features of food or the digestive system. However, comprehensive fundamental and application information on RD and how RD improves anti-diabetes and obesity have not yet been received. Therefore, the characterization, health benefits and application of RD in various fields are summarized and discussed in the current study. Typically, RD is prepared by the acid thermal method and possesses excellent physicochemical properties, including low viscosity, high solubility, storage stability, and low retro-gradation, which are correlated with its low molecular weight (Mw) and non-digestible glycosidic linkages. In contrast, RD prepared by the simultaneous debranching and crystallization method has low solubility and high crystallinity. The ingestion of RD can positively affect metabolic diseases (diabetes and obesity) in animals and humans by producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and facilitating the inflammatory response. Moreover, RD has been widely used in the beverage, dairy products, and dessert industries due to its nutritional value and textural properties without unacceptable quality loss. More studies are required to further explore RD application potential in the food industry and its role in the management of different chronic metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Aquaculture is a fast-emerging food-producing sector in which fishery production plays an imperative socio-economic role, providing ample resources and tremendous potential worldwide. However, aquatic animals are exposed to the deterioration of the ecological environment and infection outbreaks, which represent significant issues nowadays. One of the reasons for these threats is the excessive use of antibiotics and synthetic drugs that have harmful impacts on the aquatic atmosphere. It is not surprising that functional and nature-based feed ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics have been developed as natural alternatives to sustain a healthy microbial environment in aquaculture. These functional feed additives possess several beneficial characteristics, including gut microbiota modulation, immune response reinforcement, resistance to pathogenic organisms, improved growth performance, and enhanced feed utilization in aquatic animals. Nevertheless, their mechanisms in modulating the immune system and gut microbiota in aquatic animals are largely unclear. Abstract
In the process of making mushrooms into vacuum-fried crisps, the resulting blanched broth (BB) and centrifuged broth (CB) are often discarded, thereby increasing the amount of wastewater and treatment costs. This study measured the proximate compositions, bioactive components, taste components, and minerals of freeze-dried BB and CB and then used functional indigestible dextrin (Fibersol-2) as a carrier to make these two broths into instant drinks. The solids of the BB and CB contained protein (16.88-19.21%), fat (0.01-0.23%), ash (12.89-13.50%), carbohydrate (67.28-70.00%), sugars and polyols (40.55-45.68%), free amino acids (6.58-6.69%), 5'-nucleotides (0.98-1.47%), and bioactive components, especially polysaccharides (4.53-7.45%), ergothioneine (both 0.19%), and total phenols (0.15-0.36%). The equivalent umami concentration of BB was 2.77-fold higher than that of the CB. Both BB and CB showed compositions and essential minerals that are rich in taste. Using a nine-point hedonic test, it was found that the solid contents of BB and CB in the instant drink affected the consumer's preference. The flavor and overall preference of instant drinks with 2.5% BB or CB were the best amongst consumers. Overall, the BB and CB were rich in nutrients and bioactive and taste components and could be developed as a functional food in the form of a drink.

Abstract
This work focuses on the study of the physicochemical changes that take place during the first stage of ripening of plantain, with particular attention to the changes in the orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals present in this starch, and its relation shift with resistance starch. Significant changes were observed in the proximal analysis of plantain flour. A gradual increase in moisture content was attributed to the high content of crystalline structures and molecules that can be removed by drying. Water activity increased with ripening, which was attributed to the hygroscopic nature of the flours. The protein content increased, and the carbohydrate content decreased, indicating the progress of biochemical reactions. The changes in the fat content are consistent with the hydrolysis and resynthesis of lipids during the ripening process. The obtained results indicate a significant influence of the ripening stage on the physicochemical properties of flour and starch of plantain, which is associated with the occurrence of a climacteric peak on the 4th day of ripening. The hydration properties of plantain flour decreased significantly during the ripening days, consistent with the occurrence of a climacteric peak. Water holding capacity (WHC) and water binding capacity (WBC) were affected by the degree of digestion of native starch granules and protein denaturation during fruit ripening. Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) showed that during ripening the surface of the isolated starches do not suffer any significative damage. X-ray diffraction patterns were used to identify crystalline structures and to study the changes in the crystalline structures. These results showed that the starch contains orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals, which play and important role and which show small structural damage during ripening reflected in a decrease in their relative crystallinity. This is the first time that these nanocrystals have been studied and considered in the ripening process. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the thermal transition in isolated starch. The results indicated that the gelatinization of starch corresponds to the solvation of orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals, and that during ripening there is a decrease in the enthalpy reflecting some crystal structural damage. Pasting properties were studied using a Starch cell for flours and isolated starches, indicating that the pasting profile is governed by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The resistant starch does not show significant changes at this stage of maturation. This starch is the one with the highest resistant starch content reported in the literature (38%). It was hypothesized that the resistant starch is directly related to the amount of whole starch granules, and more importantly, directly related to the number concentration of orthorhombic and hexagonal nanocrystals. Therefore, knowledge of the physicochemical and nutritional properties of plantain and flour at each stage of ripening allows better selection according to industrial applications.

Abstract
The gut microbiota is now considered as a key player in the development of metabolic dysfunction. Therefore, targeting gut microbiota dysbiosis has emerged as a new therapeutic strategy, notably through the use of live gut microbiota-derived biotherapeutics. We previously highlighted the anti-inflammatory abilities of two Parabacteroides distasonis strains. We herein evaluate their potential anti-obesity abilities and show that the two strains induced the secretion of the incretin glucagon-like peptide 1 in vitro and limited weight gain and adiposity in obese mice. These beneficial effects are associated with reduced inflammation in adipose tissue and the improvement of lipid and bile acid metabolism markers. P. distasonis supplementation also modified the Actinomycetota, Bacillota and Bacteroidota taxa of the mice gut microbiota. These results provide better insight into the capacity of P. distasonis to positively influence host metabolism and to be used as novel source of live biotherapeutics in the treatment and prevention of metabolic-related diseases.

Abstract
Probiotics and prebiotics together work synergistically as synbiotics and confer various health benefits. Many studies on synbiotic foods only focus on the survival of probiotics but fail to evaluate their functional properties. The impact on functional properties should be explored to better understand its therapeutic efficacy. In this work, probiotics (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NCIM 2083) were encapsulated with prebiotics (fructooligosaccharide + whey protein + maltodextrin) using spray-drying (SD), freeze-drying (FD), spray-freeze-drying (SFD), and refractance window-drying (RWD) techniques. Aggregation, intestinal adhesion, antagonistic activity, and bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity of probiotics were studied before and after the encapsulation process. The SFD probiotics showed better aggregation ability (79% at 24-h incubation), on par with free cells (FC) (81% at 24-h incubation). The co-aggregation ability of encapsulated probiotics has drastic variations with each pathogenic strain. The adhesion ability of probiotics in chicken intestinal mucus was assessed by the crystal violet method, indicating no significant variations between FC and SFD probiotics. Also, encapsulated probiotics exhibit antagonistic activity (zone of inhibition in mm) against gut pathogens E. coli (11.33 to 17.34), S. faecalis (8.83 to 15.32), L. monocytogenes (13.67 to 18), S. boydii (12.17 to 15.5), and S. typhi (2.17 to 6.86). Overall, these studies confirm the significance and impact of various drying techniques on the functionality of encapsulated probiotics in synbiotic powders. KEY POINTS: • Understanding the relevance of processing effects on the functionality of probiotics. • Spray-freeze-dried probiotics showed superior functional properties. • The encapsulation process had no significant impact on bile salt hydrolase activity.

Abstract
Background and objective Impaired gut barrier contributes to the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and the gut microbiota and metabolome play an important role in it. Hemicellulose, a potential prebiotics, how its supplementation impacted the glucose level, the impaired gut barrier, and the gut microbiota and metabolome in T2DM remained unclear. Methods In this study, some mice were arranged randomly into four groups: db/db mice fed by a compositionally defined diet (CDD), db/db mice fed by a CDD with 10% and 20% hemicellulose supplementation, and control mice fed by a CDD. Body weight and fasting blood glucose levels were monitored weekly. The gut barrier was evaluated. Fresh stool samples were analyzed using metagenomic sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to detect gut microbiota and metabolome changes. Systemic and colonic inflammation were evaluated. Results Better glycemic control, restoration of the impaired gut barrier, and lowered systemic inflammation levels were observed in db/db mice with the supplementation of 10 or 20% hemicellulose. The gut microbiota showed significant differences in beta diversity among the four groups. Fifteen genera with differential relative abundances and 59 significantly different metabolites were found. In the db/db group, hemicellulose eliminated the redundant Faecalibaculum and Enterorhabdus. The increased succinate and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) after hemicellulose treatment were negatively correlated with Bifidobacterium, Erysipelatoclostridium, and Faecalibaculum. In addition, hemicellulose reduced the colonic expressions of TLR2/4 and TNF-α in db/db mice. Conclusion Hemicellulose may serve as a potential therapeutic intervention for T2DM by improving impaired intestinal mucosal barrier integrity, modulating gut microbiota composition, and altering the metabolic profile.

Abstract
Since the role of intestinal microbiota in metabolism was understood, the importance of dietary components such as fibres and prebiotics, which affect the modulation of microbiota, has been increasing day by day. While all prebiotic components are considered dietary fibre, not every dietary fibre is considered a prebiotic. While fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, inulin, and galactans are considered prebiotics, other fermentable carbohydrates are considered candidate prebiotic components based on in vitro and preclinical studies. Resistant starch, one of such carbohydrates, is considered a potential prebiotic component when it is made resistant to digestion naturally or chemically. In this review, both in vitro and in vivo studies in which the prebiotic capacity of type II, type III, and type IV resistant starch isolated from food and produced commercially was assessed were analyzed. According to the results of current studies, certain types of resistant starch are thought to have a high prebiotic capacity, and they may be candidate prebiotic components although positive results have not been achieved in all studies. KEY POINTS: • Resistant starch is undigested in the small intestine and is fermented in the large intestine. • Resistant starch fermentation positively affects the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus. • Resistant starch can be considered a prebiotic ingredient.

Abstract
Introduction While modulation of the human adult gut microbiota is a trending strategy to improve health, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Methods This study aimed to assess the predictive value of the ex vivo, reactor-based, high-throughput SIFR® (Systemic Intestinal Fermentation Research) technology for clinical findings using three structurally different prebiotics [inulin (IN), resistant dextrin (RD) and 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL)]. Results The key finding was that data obtained within 1-2 days were predictive for clinical findings upon repeated prebiotic intake over weeks: among hundreds of microbes, IN stimulated Bifidobacteriaceae, RD boosted Parabacteroides distasonis, while 2'FL specifically increased Bifidobacterium adolescentis and Anaerobutyricum hallii. In line with metabolic capabilities of these taxa, specific SCFA (short-chain fatty acids) were produced thus providing insights that cannot be obtained in vivo where such metabolites are rapidly absorbed. Further, in contrast to using single or pooled fecal microbiota (approaches used to circumvent low throughput of conventional models), working with 6 individual fecal microbiota enabled correlations that support mechanistic insights. Moreover, quantitative sequencing removed the noise caused by markedly increased cell densities upon prebiotic treatment, thus allowing to even rectify conclusions of previous clinical trials related to the tentative selectivity by which prebiotics modulate the gut microbiota. Counterintuitively, not the high but rather the low selectivity of IN caused only a limited number of taxa to be significantly affected. Finally, while a mucosal microbiota (enriched with Lachnospiraceae) can be integrated, other technical aspects of the SIFR® technology are a high technical reproducibility, and most importantly, a sustained similarity between the ex vivo and original in vivo microbiota. Discussion By accurately predicting in vivo results within days, the SIFR® technology can help bridge the so-called "Valley of Death" between preclinical and clinical research. Facilitating development of test products with better understanding of their mode of action could dramatically increase success rate of microbiome modulating clinical trials.Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that a resistant dextrin soluble fibre has prebiotic properties with related health benefits on blood glucose management and satiety. Our aim was to demonstrate the effects of continuous administration of resistant dextrin on intestinal gas production, digestive sensations, and gut microbiota metabolism and composition. Healthy subjects (n = 20) were given resistant dextrin (14 g/d NUTRIOSE®, Roquette Frères, Lestrem, France) for four weeks. Outcomes were measured before, at the beginning, end, and two weeks after administration: anal evacuations of gas during daytime; digestive perception, girth, and gas production in response to a standard meal; sensory and digestive responses to a comfort meal; volume of colonic biomass by magnetic resonance; taxonomy and metabolic functions of fecal microbiota by shotgun sequencing; metabolomics in urine. Dextrin administration produced an initial increase in intestinal gas production and gas-related sensations, followed by a subsequent decrease, which magnified after discontinuation. Dextrin enlarged the volume of colonic biomass, inducing changes in microbial metabolism and composition with an increase in short chain fatty acids-producing species and modulation of bile acids and biotin metabolism. These data indicate that consumption of a soluble fibre induces an adaptative response of gut microbiota towards fermentative pathways with lower gas production.

Abstract
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, and as the number of individuals with diabetes increases there is a concomitant increase in the prevalence of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Diabetes contributes to the development of DKD through a number of pathways, including inflammation, oxidative stress, and the gut-kidney axis, which may be amenable to dietary therapy. Resistant starch (RS) is a dietary fibre that alters the gut microbial consortium, leading to an increase in the microbial production of short chain fatty acids. Evidence from animal and human studies indicate that short chain fatty acids are able to attenuate inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways, which may mitigate the progression of DKD. In this review, we evaluate and summarise the evidence from both preclinical models of DKD and clinical trials that have utilised RS as a dietary therapy to limit the progression of DKD.

Abstract
SCOPE An imbalance of the gut microbiota ("dysbiosis") is associated with numerous chronic diseases, and its modulation is a promising novel therapeutic approach. Dietary supplementation with soluble fiber is one of several proposed modulation strategies. This study aims at confirming the impact of the resistant dextrin NUTRIOSE (RD), a soluble fiber with demonstrated beneficial health effects, on the gut microbiota of healthy individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS Fifty healthy women are enrolled and supplemented daily with either RD (n = 24) or a control product (n = 26) during 6 weeks. Characterization of the fecal metagenome with shotgun sequencing reveals that RD intake dramatically increases the abundance of the commensal bacterium Parabacteroides distasonis. Furthermore, presence in metagenomes of accessory genes from P. distasonis, coding for susCD (a starch-binding membrane protein complex) is associated with a greater increase of the species. This suggests that response to RD might be strain-dependent. CONCLUSION Supplementation with RD can be used to specifically increase P. distasonis in gut microbiota of healthy women. The magnitude of the response may be associated with fiber-metabolizing capabilities of strains carried by subjects. Further research will seek to confirm that P. distasonis directly modulates the clinical effects observed in other studies.

Abstract
Background One in 10 adults suffer from type 2 diabetes (T2D). The role of the gut microbiome, its homeostasis, and dysbiosis has been investigated with success in the pathogenesis as well as treatment of T2D. There is an increasing volume of literature reporting interventions of pro-, pre-, and synbiotics on T2D patients. Methods Studies investigating the effect of pro-, pre-, and synbiotics on biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in T2D populations were extracted from databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane from inception to January 2022. Results From an initial screening of 5,984 hits, 47 clinical studies were included. Both statistically significant and non-significant results have been compiled, analyzed, and discussed. We have found various promising pro-, pre-, and synbiotic formulations. Of these, multistrain/multispecies probiotics are found to be more effective than monostrain interventions. Additionally, our findings show resistant dextrin to be the most promising prebiotic, followed closely by inulin and oligosaccharides. Finally, we report that synbiotics have shown excellent effect on markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymes. We further discuss the role of metabolites in the resulting effects in biomarkers and ultimately pathogenesis of T2D, bring attention toward the ability of such nutraceuticals to have significant role in COVID-19 therapy, and finally discuss few ongoing clinical trials and prospects. Conclusion Current literature of pro-, pre- and synbiotic administration for T2D therapy is promising and shows many significant results with respect to most markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.

Abstract
Preparations of resistant dextrins have become an interesting topic of research due to their properties, which bear resemblance those of prebiotics, e.g., the improvement of metabolic parameters, increased efficiency of the immune system and induction of vitamin production. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the resistant dextrin produced from potato starch on the growth dynamics of typical gastrointestinal microbiota and the activity of fecal enzymes in order to assess a possible exhibition of prebiotic properties. In the study, in vitro cultivation of co-cultures of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, E. coli, Enterococcus, Clostridium and Bacteroides spp. was conducted on media enriched with the resistant dextrin. The CFU/mL for each strain was measured in time periods of 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 h. Furthermore, the activities of α-glucosidase, α-galactosidase, β-glucosidase, β-galactosidase and β-glucuronidase were determined using spectrophotometric methods at a wavelength of 400 nm. The results show that the resistant dextrin can be utilized as a source of carbon for the growth of intestinal bacteria. Moreover, the results revealed that, after 168 h of cultivation, it enhances the viability of probiotic strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. and decreases the growth of other intestinal strains (Clostridium, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus and Bacteroides), which is demonstrated by a high Prebiotic Index (p < 0.05). Furthermore, there was no significant change in the pH of the cultures; however, the pace of the pH decrease during the cultivation was slower in the case of culture with resistant dextrin. Furthermore, it was revealed that usage of the resistant dextrin as a medium additive noticeably lowered the activities of β-glucosidase and β-glucuronidase compared to the control (p < 0.05), whereas the activities of the other fecal enzymes were affected to a lesser degree. The resistant dextrins derived from potato starch are a suitable prebiotic candidate as they promote the growth of beneficial strains of gut bacteria and improve health markers, such as the activity of fecal enzymes. Nevertheless, additional in vivo research is necessary to further assess the suspected health-promoting properties.

Abstract
Horchata is a natural drink obtained from tiger nut tubers (Cyperus esculentus L.). It has a pleasant milky aspect and nutty flavor; some health benefits have been traditionally attributed to it. This study evaluated the effects of an unprocessed horchata drink on the gut microbiota of healthy adult volunteers (n = 31) who consumed 300 mL of natural, unprocessed horchata with no added sugar daily for 3 days. Although there were no apparent microbial profile changes induced by horchata consumption in the studied population, differences could be determined when volunteers were segmented by microbial clusters. Three distinctive enterogroups were identified previous to consuming horchata, respectively characterized by the relative abundances of Blautia and Lachnospira (B1), Bacteroides (B2) and Ruminococcus and Bifidobacterium (B3). After consuming horchata, samples of all volunteers were grouped into two clusters, one enriched in Akkermansia, Christenellaceae and Clostridiales (A1) and the other with a remarkable presence of Faecalibacterium, Bifidobacterium and Lachnospira (A2). Interestingly, the impact of horchata was dependent on the previous microbiome of each individual, and its effect yielded microbial profiles associated with butyrate production, which are typical of a Mediterranean or vegetable/fiber-rich diet and could be related to the presence of high amylose starch and polyphenols.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is one of the most common nosocomial infections in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Using new strategies to prevent nosocomial infections is crucial to avoid antibiotic resistance. One of these strategies is the utilization of probiotics. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of probiotic prophylaxis in preventing VAP in mechanically ventilated children. METHOD This study was a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. The study included 72 children under 12 years of age under mechanical ventilation for more than 48 h in the Mofid Children's Hospital. Patients were randomly divided into Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 probiotic recipients (n = 38) and placebo groups (n = 34). In addition to the standard treatment, both groups received a sachet containing probiotics or a placebo twice a day. Children were screened for VAP based on clinical and laboratory evidence. RESULTS The mean age of children in the intervention and placebo groups was 4.60 ± 4.84 and 3.38 ± 3.49 years, respectively. After adjusting the other variables, it was observed that chance of VAP among probiotics compared to the placebo group was significantly decreased (OR adjusted = 0.29; 95% CI: 0.09-0.95). Also, probiotic was associated with a significantly lower chance of diarrhea than the placebo group (OR adjusted = 0.09; 95% CI: 0.01-0.96). CONCLUSION Probiotic utilization is effective in preventing the incidence of VAP and diarrhea in children under mechanical ventilation in the PICU.
