Abstract
To explore the effects of altered amino acids (AAs) and the carnitine metabolism in non-pregnant women with infertility (NPWI), pregnant women without infertility (PWI) and infertility-treated pregnant women (ITPW) compared with non-pregnant women (NPW, control), and develop more efficient models for the diagnosis of infertility and pregnancy, 496 samples were evaluated for levels of 21 AAs and 55 carnitines using targeted high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Three methods were used to screen the biomarkers for modeling, with eight algorithms used to build and validate the model. The ROC, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the infertility diagnosis training model were higher than 0.956, 82.89, 66.64, and 82.57%, respectively, whereas those of the validated model were higher than 0.896, 77.67, 69.72, and 83.38%, respectively. The ROC, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the pregnancy diagnosis training model were >0.994, 96.23, 97.79, and 97.69%, respectively, whereas those of the validated model were >0.572, 96.39, 93.03, and 94.71%, respectively. Our findings indicate that pregnancy may alter the AA and carnitine metabolism in women with infertility to match the internal environment of PWI. The developed model demonstrated good performance and high sensitivity for facilitating infertility and pregnancy diagnosis.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have highlighted the catalytic activity of Escherichia coli alcohol dehydrogenase YahK in the presence of coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and metal zinc. Notably, competitive interaction between iron and zinc ligands has been shown to influence the catalytic efficiency of several key proteases. This study aims to unravel the intricate mechanisms underlying YahK's catalytic action, with a particular focus on the pivotal roles played by metal ions zinc and iron. Methods The purified YahK protein from E. coli cells cultivated in LB medium was utilized to investigate its metal-binding properties through UV-visible absorption measurements and determination of metal content. Subsequently, the effects of excess zinc and iron on the metal-binding ability and alcohol dehydrogenase activity of the YahK protein were explored using M9 minimal medium. Furthermore, site-directed mutagenesis technology was employed to determine the iron-binding site location within the YahK protein. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was conducted to examine the relationship between iron and zinc with respect to the YahK protein. Results The study confirmed the presence of iron and zinc in the YahK protein, with the zinc-bound form exhibiting enhanced catalytic activity in alcohol dehydrogenation reactions. Conversely, the presence of iron appears to play a pivotal role in maintaining overall stability of the YahK protein. Furthermore, experimental findings indicate that excessive zinc within M9 minimal medium can competitively bind to iron-binding sites on YahK, thereby augmenting its alcohol dehydrogenase activity. Conclusion The dynamic binding of YahK to iron and zinc unveils its intricate regulatory mechanism as an alcohol dehydrogenase, thereby highlighting the possible physiological role of YahK in E. coli and its significance in governing cellular metabolic processes. This discovery provides a novel perspective for further investigating the specific impact of metal ion binding on YahK and E. coli cell metabolism.

Abstract
Orofacial clefts (OFCs) have been linked to various toxic and essential trace elements (TETEs) worldwide. However, review estimation is absent. Therefore, addressing the hypothesis that TETEs are associated with OFCs is the main area of this review. A systematic literature search was conducted using electronic databases through PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar between 2004 and August 2022. The "AND" and "OR" operators were used to make our search results inclusive and restrictive as follows: ("Toxic element*" OR "Heavy metal*") AND ("Toxic element*" OR "Lead OR Arsenic OR Mercury*")) AND ("Essential trace element*" OR "Zinc OR Selenium OR Copper*")) AND ("Orofacial cleft*" OR "Cleft lip*" OR "Cleft palate*") AND ("Infant*" OR "Newborn*" OR "Neonate*")). The presence of toxic elements was linked to the development of OFCs. The results showed that higher levels of toxic elements in various biological sample types were related to increased risks for OFCs. Increased concentrations of essential trace elements (ETEs) lowered the risk of OFCs. Maternal consumption of diets rich in ETEs, including zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), and molybdenum (Mo), was linked to a more pronounced reduction in the risk of OFCs. Based on the findings, it is acceptable to infer that maternal exposure to toxic elements, whether through environmental contaminants or dietary sources, was associated with an elevated risk of OFCs. Furthermore, the study revealed that ETEs exhibited a potential protective role in reducing the incidence of OFCs. This observation highlights the importance of reducing exposure to toxic elements during pregnancy and suggests that optimizing maternal intake of ETEs could be an effective preventive strategy.

Abstract
Background Copper and zinc are two trace elements that are essential to maintain normal pregnancy and fetal development. But only few research established specific reference intervals (RIs) for pregnant women. In this study, we aim to establish discrete RIs and next-generation RIs for copper and zinc during pregnancy by real-world data. Method We retrospectively collected 710 healthy pregnant women and 300 age-matched non-pregnant women attending the hospital and compared copper and zinc levels among them. Further, we analyzed multiple factors (gestational age, maternal age, and parity) that may affect copper and zinc during pregnancy by multivariate regression. Two types of reference intervals (RIs) of copper and zinc for pregnant women were established: discrete reference intervals (RIs) by non-parametric method and next-generation RIs by Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS) model. Result Copper levels were higher (median: 1st trimester: 1203.00 μg/L, 2nd trimester: 1818.00 μg/L, 3rd trimester: 1795.00 μg/L) than in non-pregnant women (median: 900.00 μg/L, p<0.001), whereas zinc levels were lower in pregnant women (median: 1st trimester: 836.00 μg/L, 2nd trimester: 639.00 μg/L, 3rd trimester: 618.00 μg/L) than in non-pregnant women (median: 767.00 μg/L, p<0.001). Additionally, copper and zinc levels varied among trimesters. Moreover, copper and zinc were affected significantly by gestational age but maternal age only had a weak effect on them. Based on the effect of gestational age, we established discrete RIs partitioned by trimesters and next-generation RIs for copper and zinc respectively during pregnancy. Conclusion Taken together, this research elucidated the remarkable effect of gestational age on copper and zinc during pregnancy. The next-generation RIs visualized trends and subtle changes in copper and zinc levels during pregnancy. The discrepancy between discrete RIs and next-generation RIs suggested a more detailed continuous RIs could be considered for pregnant women.

Abstract
Copper (Cu), an essential trace element, is crucial for both the mother and fetus. Currently, an increasing number of studies have focused on blood copper levels during pregnancy. Studies have found that blood copper levels in pregnant women are higher than those in reproductive-age women, but the trend, mainly in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, is still controversial. Most studies showed that blood copper levels gradually increased during pregnancy, while some studies found that blood copper levels remained stable or even decreased in the 3rd trimester. The possible mechanisms of variations in blood copper during pregnancy include the influence of estrogen (hepatic uptake and excretion, ceruloplasmin synthesis, maternal-fetal transport, etc.), the interaction of other trace elements (Fe, Zn, etc.) and other factors. Among them, maternal-fetal copper transport caused by elevated estrogen may be the main reason for the inconsistencies observed in the 2nd and 3rd trimester during pregnancy. However, there are some mechanisms require further investigation. In the future, the trend and mechanisms of blood copper during pregnancy should be explored more deeply to help doctors better monitor copper status and detect copper abnormalities in time.

Abstract
Introduction Spontaneous preterm birth (SPB) is a significant cause of neonatal mortality, yet its etiology remains unclear. Cobalt, an essential trace element, might be a risk factor for SPB. This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal serum cobalt concentration and SPB, and to clarify the role of blood lipids and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in this relationship. Methods We conducted a nested case-control study within the Beijing Birth Cohort Study. Serum samples were obtained from 222 pregnant women with SPB and 224 controls during the first (7-13 weeks of pregnancy) and third trimesters (32-42 weeks of pregnancy). Serum cobalt concentration was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fasting blood glucose and lipids levels were detected using a fully automated biochemical immunoassay instrument. Logistic regression models and linear regression models were established to explore the association between serum cobalt concentration and the risk of SPB in pregnant women, and to test the mediating effect of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and lipids. Results We found that the serum cobalt concentration in mothers with SPB and controls was similar in the first trimester, with values of 0.79 (0.58-1.10) ng/mL and 0.75 (0.51-1.07) ng/mL, respectively. However, in the third trimester, the cobalt concentration increased to 0.88 (0.59-1.14) ng/mL and 0.84 (0.52-1.19) ng/mL, respectively. In the logistic regression model, when considering the third trimester of pregnancy, after adjusting for ethnicity, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), maternal age, education, income, and parity, it was observed that the medium level of cobalt concentration (0.63-1.07 ng/ml) had a negative correlation with the risk of SPB. The odds ratio (OR) was 0.56, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.34-0.90 ng/mL and a p-value of 0.02. This suggests that cobalt in this concentration range played a protective role against SPB. Additionally, it was found that FBG in the third trimester of pregnancy had a partial intermediary role, accounting for 9.12% of the association. However, no relationship between cobalt and SPB risk was found in the first trimester. Conclusion During the third trimester, intermediate levels of maternal cobalt appear to offer protection against SPB, with FBG playing a partial mediating role. To further clarify the optimal cobalt concentrations during pregnancy for different populations, a multi-center study with a larger sample size is necessary. Additionally, exploring the specific mechanism of FBG's mediating role could provide valuable insights for improving the prevention of SPB.

Essential Trace Elements Status in Portuguese Pregnant Women and Their Association with Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes: A Prospective Study from the IoMum Cohort. BIOLOGY 2023; 12:1351. Abstract
Cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn) are essential trace elements (ETEs) and important cofactors for intermediary metabolism or redox balance. These ETEs are crucial during pregnancy, their role on specific pregnancy outcomes is largely unknown. This prospective study (#NCT04010708) aimed to assess urinary levels of these ETEs in pregnancy and to evaluate their association with pregnancy outcomes. First trimester pregnant women of Porto and Lisbon provided a random spot urine sample, and sociodemographic and lifestyle data. Clinical data were obtained from clinical records. Urinary ETEs were quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A total of 635 mother:child pairs were included. Having urinary Zn levels above the 50th percentile (P50) was an independent risk factor for pre-eclampsia (PE) (aOR [95% CI]: 5.350 [1.044-27.423], p = 0.044). Urinary Zn levels above the P50 decreased the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) birth head circumference (aOR [95% CI]: 0.315 [0.113-0.883], p = 0.028), but it increased the risk SGA length (aOR [95% CI]: 2.531 [1.057-6.062], p = 0.037). This study may provide valuable information for public health policies related to prenatal nutrition, while informing future efforts to de-fine urinary reference intervals for ETEs in pregnant women.

Abstract
Characterization of metal(loid) variation during pregnancy and identification of the affecting factors are important for assessing pregnancy exposures in epidemiological studies. In this study, maternal hair was collected in three segments (each 3 cm) from pregnant women in Guangzhou, China. Ten metal(loid)s, including six essential trace metal(loid)s and four toxic trace metal(loid)s, were analyzed to investigate the levels of various metal(loid)s during pregnancy and the factors that influence them. Strong pairwise correlations were observed between manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), and vanadium (V), between selenium (Se), arsenic (As), and antimony (Sb), and between cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). All metal(loid)s except for Se, Mn, and Co showed strong correlations among the three hair segments, and most of the metal(loid)s had good reproducibility, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranging from 0.510 to 0.931, except for As (ICC = 0.334), Mn (ICC = 0.231), and Co (ICC = 0.235). Zn levels decreased, while Sb increased, in maternal hair during pregnancy. Maternal sociodemographic characteristics and dietary intake affected metal(loid) levels in maternal hair. These results provide foundational data for using maternal hair segmental analysis to evaluate exposure variation to metal(loid)s during pregnancy and the potential factors associated with them.

Abstract
Previous studies on the relationship between dietary minerals and preeclampsia (PE) have given inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to further clarify the relationship between dietary minerals intake and PE in Chinese pregnant women. In this study, 440 pairs of hospital-based preeclamptic and healthy women were matched 1:1. Dietary intake was obtained through a 78-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Restricted cubic splines were plotted to evaluate the dose-response relationship between dietary minerals intake and PE. This study found significant inverse associations for dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper, manganese and zinc and the risk of PE in both univariate and multivariate models (all P- trend < 0.05). After adjusting for possible confounders, compared with the lowest quartile, the odds ratio of the highest quartile was 0.74 (95% CI 0.56-0.98) for calcium, 0.63 (95% CI 0.42-0.93) for magnesium, 0.45 (95% CI 0.31-0.65) for phosphorus, 0.44 (95% CI 0.30-0.65) for iron, 0.72 (95% CI 0.53-0.97) for copper, 0.66 (95% CI 0.48-0.91) for manganese and 0.38 (95% CI 0.25-0.57) for zinc. In addition, a reverse J-shaped relationship between dietary minerals intake and PE risk was observed (P-overall association < 0.05). In Chinese pregnant women, a higher intake of dietary minerals, including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc was associated with a lower odds of PE.

Abstract
Introduction Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability in childhood, but its causes are only partly known. Early-life exposure to toxic metals and inadequate or excess amounts of essential elements can adversely affect brain and nervous system development. However, little is still known about these as perinatal risk factors for CP. This study aims to investigate the associations between second trimester maternal blood levels of toxic metals, essential elements, and mixtures thereof, with CP diagnoses in children. Methods In a large, population-based prospective birth cohort (The Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study), children with CP diagnoses were identified through The Norwegian Patient Registry and Cerebral Palsy Registry of Norway. One hundred forty-four children with CP and 1,082 controls were included. The relationship between maternal blood concentrations of five toxic metals and six essential elements and CP diagnoses were investigated using mixture approaches: elastic net with stability selection to identify important metals/elements in the mixture in relation to CP; then logistic regressions of the selected metals/elements to estimate odds ratio (OR) of CP and two-way interactions among metals/elements and with child sex and maternal education. Finally, the joint effects of the mixtures on CP diagnoses were estimated using quantile-based g-computation analyses. Results The essential elements manganese and copper, as well as the toxic metal Hg, were the most important in relation to CP. Elevated maternal levels of copper (OR = 1.40) and manganese (OR = 1.20) were associated with increased risk of CP, while Hg levels were, counterintuitively, inversely related to CP. Metal/element interactions that were associated with CP were observed, and that sex and maternal education influenced the relationships between metals/elements and CP. In the joint mixture approach no significant association between the mixture of metals/elements and CP (OR = 1.00, 95% CI = [0.67, 1.50]) was identified. Conclusion Using mixture approaches, elevated levels of copper and manganese measured in maternal blood during the second trimester could be related to increased risk of CP in children. The inverse associations between maternal Hg and CP could reflect Hg as a marker of maternal fish intake and thus nutrients beneficial for foetal brain development.

Abstract
The aim of this study were to understand the intake of selected metals (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg)) during pregnancy; to detect serum Cu, Mg, Zn and Fe levels in pregnant women; to analyze the relationships among the selected metals, maternal thyroid function and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels; to investigate the impact of the selected metals and maternal thyroid function on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM); and to provide clinical value for the rational intake of the selected metals and iodine during pregnancy to ensure normal fetal development. The population was recruited from pregnant women presenting to the obstetrics outpatient clinic of Shanxi Provincial People's Hospital (February 2021 to April 2022). Selected metal, thyroid hormone (TH (free thyroxine (FT4), free tri-iodothyronine (FT3), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)) and FBG levels were measured in pregnant women during early, middle and late pregnancy. Covariance analysis was used to analyze the overall trends in selected metal, TH and FBG levels during pregnancy, and binary logistic regression models were used to assess the impacts of the selected metals and thyroid function on the risk of GDM. In addtion, the potential mediation effects of thyroid functions were explored in the mediation analyses. A total of 65 pregnant women were included in this study. Regression models showed that maternal Mg and Cu levels were positively associated with the risk of GDM, conversely, logFT4 was negatively associated with the risk of GDM. Mediation analyses suggested that the associations between the selected metals (Zn, Cu and Mg) and GDM might be mediated by FT3 levels, and that the Cu-GDM and Zn-GDM association could be explained by FT4 levels. Additionally, the Zn-GDM association could also potentially be mediated by the FT3/FT4 ratio. Our findings suggest that Mg, Cu and FT4 levels may act as influencing factors for the development of GDM, and maternal FT3, FT4 and the FT3/FT4 ratio might be the potential mediators of the associations between the selected metals and GDM risk during pregnancy.

Abstract
Pregnant women of advanced maternal age (AMA) are vulnerable to exposure to the surrounding environment. Assessment of trace elements in pregnant women living in specific areas is important for biomonitoring. However, exposure levels and variation patterns during pregnancy remains controversial and attracts extensive public concern. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate exposure of 18 toxic and/or essential trace elements in maternal plasma and in paired cord plasma during pregnancy at AMA. A total of 48 pregnant women of AMA were recruited in Peking University Third Hospital from 2018 to 2021. Eighteen elements found in maternal plasma during the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd trimester of pregnancy and paired cord plasma were measured by 7700x ICP-MS (Agilent Technologies, Palo Alto, CA, USA) and Elan DRC type II ICP-MS (The Perkin-Elmer Corporation, Waltham, MA USA). Concentrations of Pb, Se, Fe, Zn, and Mo all decreased during pregnancy, while Cu increased. Interestingly, concentrations of Rb decreased initially but then increased. Elements as Al, Co, Se, Cu, and Ni showed significantly lower levels in cord than in maternal plasma, while elements as Sr, Fe, Rb, Mn and Zn displayed significantly higher levels in cord than in maternal plasma. Moreover, positively- interacted clusters were found in Ni-Co-Cu-Al-Rb-Zn and Zn-Mn-Al-Pb in maternal blood. Similar positively-interacted clusters were found in Zn-Ni-Co, Zn-Ni-Fe, Mn-Al-Pb, Fe-Pb-Mn, Fe-Ni-Cu, and Rb-Cu-Sb-Fe-Mn in cord plasma. Furthermore, correlations between paired maternal and cord blood samples for As, Sr, and Mo were statistically significant, indicating that the fetus burden may reflect maternal exposure to some extent. Admittedly, levels of toxic and essential elements in our cohort study were comparatively lower than those in the scientific literature.

Abstract
To identify biomarker lipids causing preterm delivery, we focused on lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). The results of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry revealed that plasma levels of LPCs and LPAs were higher in the first and third (T3) trimesters of human normal and adverse pregnancies than in the second trimester, suggesting the direct metabolic conversion of LPC to LPA by lysophospholipase D (lysoPLD) activity of autotaxin. The elevated LPC and LPA levels in women with preterm deliveries in T3 were higher than in women with term deliveries under normal pregnancy in T3. We measured lysoPLD activity of diluted sera of pregnant women by quantification of choline released from exogenous LPC, and found progressive increases of lysoPLD activities in women with normal and adverse pregnancies. Ratios of lysoPLD activities for linoleoyl LPC to that for palmitoyl LPC were found to be decreased in pregnant women compared to that in non-pregnant women. These results may be due to the altered patterns of endogenous modulators for autotaxin and the profiles of the bound metal ion.

Abstract
Exposure to metals has been linked with the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), but little is known about the potential effects of exposure to metal mixtures. Thus, our study aimed to investigated the impact of a complex mixture of metals on HDP, especially the interactions among metal mixtures. We did a population-based nested case-control study from October 2013 to October 2016 in Wuhan, China, including 146 HDP cases and 292 controls. Plasma concentrations of Aluminum (Al), Barium (Ba), Cobalt (Co), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Molybdenum (Mo), Nickel (Ni), Selenium (Se), Strontium (Sr), Thallium (Tl), and Vanadium (V) were measured and collected between 10 and 16 gestational weeks. We employed quantile g-computation, conditional logistic regression models, and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) to assess the association of individual metals and metal mixtures with HDP risk. In the quantile g-computation, the OR for a joint tertile increase in plasma concentrations was 3.67 (95% CI: 1.70, 7.91). Hg contributed the largest positive weights and followed by Al, Ni, and V. In conditional logistic regression models, concentrations of Hg, Al, Ni, and V were significantly associated with the risk of HDP (p-FDR < 0.05). Compared to the lowest tertiles, the ORs (95% CI) for the highest tertiles of these four metals were 2.67 (1.44, 4.95), 3.09 (1.70, 5.64), 5.31 (2.68, 10.53), and 4.52 (2.26, 9.01), respectively. In the BKMR analysis, we observed a linear positive association between Hg, Al, V, and HDP, and a nonlinear relationship between Ni and HDP. A potential interaction between Al and V was also identified. We found that exposure to metal mixtures in early pregnancy, both individually and as a mixture, was associated with the risk of HDP. Potential interaction effects of Al and V on the risk of HDP may exist.

Abstract
Background Preeclampsia (PE) is a multi-organ syndrome that onsets in the second half of pregnancy. It is the second leading cause of maternal death globally. The homeostasis of zinc (Zn) levels is important for feto-maternal health. Objective We aimed to collect all studies available to synthesize the evidence regarding the association between maternal Zn levels and the risk of preeclampsia. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted via searching seven electronic databases [PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, African Journals Online (AJOL), ClinicalTrial.gov, and two Chinese databases: Wanfang and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, CNKI]. Studies reporting maternal serum Zn levels in pregnant women with or without preeclampsia were included. Eligible studies were assessed through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the meta-analysis was performed via RevMan and Stata. The random-effects method (REM) was used for the meta-analysis with 95% confidence interval (CI). The pooled result was assessed using standard mean difference (SMD). The heterogeneity test was carried out using I 2 statistics, and the publication bias was evaluated using Begg's and Egger's test. Meta-regression and sensitivity analysis was performed via Stata software. Results A total of 51 studies were included in the final analysis. 6,947 participants from 23 countries were involved in our study. All studies went through the quality assessment. The pooled results showed that maternal serum Zn levels were lower in preeclamptic women than in healthy pregnant women (SMD: -1.00, 95% CI: -1.29, -0.70). Sub-group analysis revealed that geographical, economic context, and disease severity may further influence serum Zn levels and preeclampsia. Limitations There are significant between-study heterogeneity and publication bias among included studies. Conclusions A lower level of maternal Zn was associated with increased risks of preeclampsia. The associations were not entirely consistent across countries and regions worldwide. Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia is the main cause of maternal and perinatal death. Multiple studies suggest that trace elements were associated with preeclampsia, but the results varied, and less known about early or mid-term pregnancy of trace elements and preeclampsia. We aim to explore the association between mid-term pregnancy trace elements levels and preeclampsia. METHODS The retrospective cohort study was consecutively conducted in Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital, Guangdong Province, China, from August 1, 2019, to November 30, 2019. Trace elements are derived from the laboratory data system, measured in maternal whole blood during 12-27 (+6) weeks of pregnancy by flame atomic absorption spectrometer method. Preeclampsia diagnosis and covariance were ascertained from the electronic medical records system. We used multivariable logical regression to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% CIs. RESULTS A total of 2186 participants were included in this study, and 59 (2.70%) women developed preeclampsia. After multivariable adjustment, the OR of Mg levels for preeclampsia was 0.35 (95%CI:0.06,2.20). The fifth quintiles of Mg were associated with 0.29 (95% CI:0.10,0.85) times lower risk of preeclampsia compared with the first quintile, with a dose-response trend (P for trend = 0.056). Per 1 µmol/L increment in Cu was associated with 11% lower risk of preeclampsia (OR=0.89; 95% CI, 0.78,1.02). Compared with the first quintile, the second, third,fourth,fifth quintile of Cu was associated with a odd ratio of 0.12 (95% CI:0.03,0.43),0.67 (95% CI:0.30,1.48),0.33 (95% CI:0.15,0.76) and 0.26 (95% CI:0.10,0.66),respectively. Null associations were observed for Zn, Fe, Ca. CONCLUSIONS Higher blood Mg and Cu levels in mid-term pregnancy were associated with lower preeclampsia risk.

Abstract
Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Research on the relationships between trace elements (TE) and the development of cancer or its prevention is a field that is gaining increasing relevance. This review provides an evaluation of the effects of TE (As, Al, B, Cd, Cr, Cu, F, I, Pb, Li, Mn, Hg, Mo, Ni, Se, Si, Sn, V and Zn) intake and supplementation in cancer risk and prevention, as well as their interactions with oncology treatments. Advancements in the knowledge of TE, their dietary interactions and their main food sources can provide patients with choices that will help them to improve their quality of life and therapy outcomes. This approach could open new opportunities for treatments based on the integration of conventional therapies (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy) and dietary interventions that provide advanced personalized treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) represents the frequently occurring medical disorder beginning in the process of pregnancy. No consensus has been reached about the relationship of circulating copper content with the risk of GDM. Therefore, the present work carried out a meta-analysis for summarizing epidemiological research regarding the copper level with the GDM risk. Furthermore, studies using categories of copper concentration as exposure were combined by dose-response meta-analysis. METHODS Related studies were retrieved against the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception till August 2020. The overall effects were expressed as standard mean difference (SMD). A dose-response meta-analysis was conducted to assess whether the higher copper concentration was associated with higher risks of GDM. Stata 16.0 and Review Manager 5.3 were utilized for data analysis. RESULTS A total of fourteen articles involving were retrieved for meta-analysis; in the meantime, 2670 pregnant subjects including 910 GDM cases were enrolled for quantitative analysis. Based on the integrated findings, GDM cases showed increased circulating copper contents relative to those in normal pregnant subjects (SMD = 0.65, 95% CI 0.19 to 1.11; P = 0.005). There was no obvious evidence of publication bias among the studies enrolled. Subgroup analysis showed that such trend was consistent in the third trimester (SMD = 1.21, 95% CI 0.35 to 2.08; P = 0.006) but not second trimester. Meanwhile, circulating copper concentration was significantly higher in women with GDM than those without GDM within the Asian population but not within the Caucasian population (Asia: SMD = 0.73; 95% CI 0.12 to 1.34, P = 0.02; Europe: SMD = 0.49; 95% CI: - 0.23 to 1.20, P = 0.18). Further, serum copper analysis together with subgroup analysis was conducted, and the same result was obtained. For dose-response analysis, the linear associations between circulating copper and risks of GDM were revealed, that higher circulating copper concentration during pregnancy is closely associated with GDM. CONCLUSION According to existing evidence, the serum copper concentration increased among GDM cases compared with subjects with normality in glucose tolerance pregnant subject, in particular among the Asians and during the third trimester. The finding from dose-response analysis suggested that increased copper level is associated with an increased risk of GDM. Nonetheless, more specially designed prospective articles should be carried out for understanding the dynamic relationship of copper concentration with the GDM risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe serum levels of calcium, copper, selenium, magnesium, iron and zinc and evaluate their relationship with maternal socio-demographic characteristics and dietary variables in women in the first trimester of pregnancy. METHOD Cross-sectional study with 1279 participants from the INMA cohorts. RESULTS The concentrations of the elements analyzed were within the normal range. Associations with higher levels of these metals were found for calcium with white meat intake (p=0.026), for copper with excess body weight (p <0.01), low social class (p=0.03) and being multipara (p <0.01), for magnesium with being over 35 years old (p=0.001), high social class (p=0.044), primiparous status (p=0.002) and low daily intake of bread (p=0.009) and legumes (p=0.020); for zinc with university education (p=0.039) and residence in Gipuzkoa (p <0.01), and for selenium with residence in Valencia (p <0.01), university education (p=0.001), vitamin B6 supplementation (p=0.006), fish intake (> 71g/day) (p=0.014) and having been born in Spain (p=0.001). Further, lower iron levels were associated with being overweight (p=0.021) or obese (p <0.001) and vitamin B12 supplementation (p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that trace elements in the analyzed cohorts are adequate for this stage of pregnancy. The variability in these elements is mainly linked to socio-demographic and anthropometric variables.

Abstract
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Nutritional status influences growth and development, including that of the eye. However, little attention has been given to possible dietary influences in myopia. This study demonstrates that serum zinc has no relationship with myopia development. BACKGROUND Myopia is inherently associated with eye growth and thereby possibly amenable to nutritional influence. A number of Asian studies have reported lower levels of serum zinc in myopic children. This study was designed to assess the relationship between serum zinc and myopia in the Korean population - using a subsample of participants from nationally representative data. METHODS Data from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010 were used to explore zinc status in relation to refraction. A total of 304 participants were analysed, ranging in age from 12 to 19-years. Serum zinc levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, while refractive error was determined by non-cycloplegic autorefraction. Multivariate analysis was used to examine the association. RESULTS A significant majority of participants (n = 255; 84 per cent) were myopic. There was no significant difference in serum zinc levels between myopic and non-myopic children (p = 0.81). In multivariate logistic regression, serum zinc was not significantly associated with myopia after adjustment for age, gender, residence, body mass index, family income and recreational activity. Similarly, no relationship was observed between spherical equivalent refraction and serum zinc within the myopic group (p = 0.46). CONCLUSION In a subset of 12-19-year-old participants from the population-representative KNHANES study, no association was found between serum zinc and myopia. However, the lack of a sensitive biomarker for zinc status remains a major limitation in this, and all current studies.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition that may emerge at a young age and often lasts for life. It often goes through phases of recurrence and remission and has a devastating effect on quality of life. The exact etiology of the disease is still unclear, but it appears that an inappropriate immune response to intestinal flora bacteria in people with a genetic predisposition may cause the disease. Managing inflammatory bowel disease is still a serious challenge. Oxidative stress and free radicals appear to be involved in the pathogenesis of this disease, and a number of studies have suggested the use of antioxidants as a therapeutic approach. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of some trace elements have led some of the research to focus on studying these trace elements in inflammatory bowel disease. Zinc and selenium are among the most important trace elements that have significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some studies have shown the importance of these trace elements in inflammatory bowel disease. In this review, we have attempted to provide a comprehensive overview of the findings of these studies and to gather current knowledge about the association of these trace elements with the inflammatory process and inflammatory bowel disease.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common medical disorder that begins during pregnancy. The present work aimed to investigate the relationship of maternal or foetal circulatory zinc levels with GDM. Related studies were retrieved against the PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus databases till July 2020. The overall effects were expressed as standard mean difference (SMD). Furthermore, the random effects model was used to assess the summarised risk ratios (SRRs) to determine the relationship between zinc and the risk of GDM. A total of 15 articles involving were retrieved for meta‐analysis; in the meantime, 4955 subjects including 1549 GDM cases were enrolled for quantitative analysis. Compared with normal control, GDM cases had decreased circulating zinc level on the whole, but the difference was not statistically significant (SMD = −0.40, 95%CI: −0.80 to −0.00, P = 0.05). Interestingly, upon subgroup analysis stratified by serum zinc content but not plasma zinc concentration, there was significant difference in zinc content between GDM cases and normal controls (SMD = −0.56; 95%CI: −1.07 to −0.04, P = 0.03). Meanwhile, subgroup analysis also revealed similar tendency among the Asians and during the 2nd trimester, but not among the Caucasians or during the 1st or 3rd trimester. Data extracted from four studies that compared pregnant women with GDM in the high level of zinc and GDM in the low level of zinc yielded an SRR of 0.929 (95%CI: 0.905–0.954). According to existing evidence, the serum zinc content decreases among GDM cases compared with subjects with no abnormality in glucose tolerance, in particular among the Asians and during the second trimester. Nonetheless, more well designed prospective study should be carried out for understanding the dynamic relationship of zinc level with the incidence of GDM.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element and its deficiency in utero may affect fetus development and birth outcomes. The current study aimed to assess serum Se status at delivery and examine the possible association between Se levels and birth outcomes. The interaction of Se with selected essential and toxic elements as well as possible sex-dependent responses in utero were also evaluated. The negative association between Se levels and head circumference of neonates was evident in the total cohort (β = −0.164; p < 0.001) as well as in the pre-term and full-term cohorts. Significant positive correlations were found between maternal serum Se concentrations and zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in the total and regional cohorts. In the total cohort, the toxic elements lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) showed a negative correlation with Se levels, while mercury (Hg), aluminum (Al) and cadmium (Cd) showed a positive correlation. The study found a sex-dependent response in utero for Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg, and Al. The findings of the current study may inform reproductive health policy on Se status in South Africa and highlight the need for sensitive methods to measure Se intake during pregnancy and its complex interactions with other micronutrients and environmental pollutants.

Abstract
The levels of many essential minerals decrease during pregnancy if un-supplemented, including calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, zinc, and possibly chromium and iodine. Sub-optimal intake of minerals from preconception through pregnancy increases the risk of many pregnancy complications and infant health problems. In the U.S., dietary intake of minerals is often below the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), especially for iodine and magnesium, and 28% of women develop iron deficiency anemia during their third trimester. The goal of this paper is to propose evidence-based recommendations for the optimal level of prenatal supplementation for each mineral for most women in the United States. Overall, the evidence suggests that optimal mineral supplementation can significantly reduce a wide range of pregnancy complications (including anemia, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, hyperthyroidism, miscarriage, and pre-eclampsia) and infant health problems (including anemia, asthma/wheeze, autism, cerebral palsy, hypothyroidism, intellectual disability, low birth weight, neural tube defects, preterm birth, rickets, and wheeze). An evaluation of 180 commercial prenatal supplements found that they varied widely in mineral content, often contained only a subset of essential minerals, and the levels were often below our recommendations. Therefore, there is a need to establish recommendations on the optimal level of mineral supplementation during pregnancy.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum zinc status of pregnant women in the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance (CACDNS) in 2015–2016. Methods: A total of 7147 apparently healthy pregnant women were randomly selected in 302 national monitoring sites. Information on age, race, residence region, education, pregnancy, and family income per annum was collected, and the concentration of serum zinc was determined. The evaluation of serum zinc status was further performed according to the recommendations by the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group (IZiNCG). Results: The median concentration of serum zinc was 858.9 μg/L with an interquartile range (IQR) of 712.9 μg/L and 1048.9 μg/L, while the overall prevalence of zinc deficiency was 3.5% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 3.0% and 3.9%. Serum zinc status of pregnant women changed greatly in the different categories, particular in pregnancy and family income per annum (p < 0.05), but no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of zinc deficiency (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The lower prevalence of zinc deficiency generally indicated a better zinc status for pregnant women in the CACDNS in 2015–2016. However, a well-designed evaluation system of zinc status for pregnant women should be continually optimized and improved by inducing more parameters such as biochemical, dietary, or functional indicators.

Abstract
The study objective was to identify determinants of essential elements and vitamins intake, and microelements and vitamins concentration in blood among pregnant women from Poland. Based on the data from food frequency questionnaires and information about supplements taken (n = 1252), daily supply of six elements (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium) and nine vitamins (folate, vitamins A, E, C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) was calculated. Zinc, copper, selenium (n = 340), vitamin A and E (n = 358) concentration was determined in blood collected during pregnancy. Most of the women did not meet the demand for essential elements and vitamins with a diet. About 94% of the respondents declared supplements use. The women with higher education, indicating leisure-time, physical activity and multiparity had a higher chance of meeting the average demand for the majority of the analyzed nutrients. On the other hand, factors such as BMI < 18.5kg/m2, a higher level of stress, and late first medical-care visit were associated with a lower chance of meeting the recommendations. Higher socio-economic status was a determinant of a higher selenium concentration in plasma (β = 3.1; 95%CI: 0.2–5.9), whereas BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, and multiparity of a higher copper concentration in plasma (β = 0.2; 95%CI: 0.03-0.4; β = 0.2; 95%CI: 0.1–0.4). Higher plasma concentration of vitamin E was noted among women older than 30 years of age comparing to those who were 30 or younger (β = 1.5; 95%CI: 0.6–2.4). Although more studies are required, especially such based on laboratory measures, our results indicate target groups for dietary interventions during pregnancy for children’s optimal health and development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the prospective correlation between serum metals before 24 weeks' gestation and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or glucose in the late second trimester among southern Chinese pregnant women. METHODS A total of 8169 pregnant women were included in our retrospective cohort study. Logistic regression was used to investigate the relationships between metals (Manganese [Mn], copper [Cu], lead [Pb], calcium [Ca], zinc [Zn], magnesium [Mg]) and GDM. Quantile regression was performed to detect the shifts and associations with metals and three time-points glucose distribution of oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) focused on the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was used to explore the relationship of metal mixtures and GDM as well as glucose. RESULTS Maternal serum concentrations of metals were assessed at mean 16.55 ± 2.92 weeks' gestation. Women with under weight might have 25% decreased risk of GDM for every 50% increase in Cu concentration within the safe limits. A 50% increase in Mn and Zn levels was related to a 0.051 μmol/L (95% CI: 0.033-0.070) and 0.059 μmol/L (95% CI: 0.040-0.079) increase in mean fasting plasma glucose of OGTT (OGTT0), respectively. The magnitude of association with Mn was smaller at the upper tail of OGTT0 distribution, while the magnitude of correlation with Zn was greater at the upper tail. However, there was a 0.012 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.017 to -0.008), 0.028 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.049 to -0.007), and 0.036 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.057 to -0.016) decrease in mean OGTT0 levels for every 50% increase in Pb, Ca, and Mg, respectively. The negative association of Pb, Ca, and Mg was greater at the lower tail of OGTT0 distribution. No significant relationship was observed in Cu and mean OGTT0 level (-0.010 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.021 to 0.001), however, it showed a protective effect at the upper tail (-0.034 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.049 to -0.017). No obvious correlation was found between metals and postprandial glucose levels (OGTT1 and OGTT2 from OGTT). The WQS index was significantly related to OGTT0 (P < 0.001). The contribution of Mn (80.19%) to metal mixture index was the highest related to OGTT0, followed by Cu (19.81%). CONCLUSIONS Higher Mn and Zn but lower Pb, Ca, and Mg concentrations within a certain range before 24 weeks' gestation might prospectively impair fasting plasma glucose during pregnancy; a greater focus is required on Mn. It could provide early markers of metal for predicting later glucose and suggest implement intervention for pregnant women.

Abstract
Maternal status of essential and toxic elements affects the health of the mother, developing fetus, or breastfeeding infant. However, few studies have examined the patterns of these elements and their determinants in pregnant or lactating women. Plasma samples of 1211 healthy mid-pregnant, late pregnant, and lactating women enrolled in coastland, lakeland, and inland areas of China from May–July 2014, were analyzed for concentrations of 15 elements, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The adjusted median concentrations of elements varied by physiologic stage and region. Lactating versus pregnant women showed higher concentrations of Zn, Cr, Mo, Ni, Sb, Cd and Pb, but lower concentrations of Cu, I, Al and Hg. In pregnant women, the concentrations of Fe, Zn, I, Mo, Ni, Al, Hg and Cd were higher in mid- versus late-pregnancy. Overall, the highest concentrations were observed in Zn, I, Mn, Al, and Pb in coastland, in Hg in lakeland, and in Fe in inland area. Element concentrations varied by maternal age, pre-pregnancy BMI, education, parity, delivery mode, feeding practice, and intakes of aquatic products and mutton. In conclusion, essential and toxic elements coexisted in pregnant and lactating women, and their concentrations varied by physiologic stages, regions, maternal socio-demographic characteristics and dietary factors.

Abstract
Iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) are microelements essential for the proper functioning of living organisms. These elements participatein many processes, including cellular metabolism and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defenses, and also influence enzyme activity, regulate gene expression, and take part in protein synthesis. Fe, Cu, and Zn have a significant impact on the health of pregnant women and in the development of the fetus, as well as on the health of the newborn. A proper concentration of these elements in the body of women during pregnancy reduces the risk of complications such as anemia, induced hypertension, low birth weight, preeclampsia, and postnatal complications. The interactions between Fe, Cu, and Zn influence their availability due to their similar physicochemical properties. This most often occurs during intestinal absorption, where metal ions compete for binding sites with transport compounds. Additionally, the relationships between these ions have a great influence on the course of reactions in the tissues, as well as on their excretion, which can be stimulated or delayed. This review aims to summarize reports on the influence of Fe, Cu, and Zn on the course of single and multiple pregnancies, and to discuss the interdependencies and mechanisms occurring between Fe, Cu, and Zn.

Abstract
Microelements involved in the oxidative balance have a significant impact on human health, but their role in pregnancy are poorly studied. We examined the relationships between first trimester levels of selenium (Se), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu), as well as maternal characteristics and pregnancy results. The data came from a Polish prospective cohort of women in a single pregnancy without chronic diseases. A group of 563 women who had a complete set of data, including serum microelements in the 10–14th week was examined, and the following were found: 47 deliveries <37th week; 48 cases of birth weight <10th and 64 newborns >90th percentile; 13 intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) cases; 105 gestational hypertension (GH) and 15 preeclampsia (PE) cases; and 110 gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) cases. The microelements were quantified using mass spectrometry. The average concentrations (and ranges) of the elements were as follows: Se: 60.75 µg/L (40.91–125.54); Zn: 618.50 µg/L (394.04–3238.90); Cu: 1735.91 µg/L (883.61–3956.76); and Fe: 1018.33 µg/L (217.55–2806.24). In the multivariate logistic regression, we found that an increase in Se of 1 µg/L reduces the risk of GH by 6% (AOR = 0.94; p = 0.004), the risk of IUGR by 11% (AOR = 0.89; p = 0.013), and the risk of birth <34th week by 7% (but close to the significance) (AOR = 0.93; p = 0.061). An increase in Fe of 100 µg/L reduces the risk of PE by 27% (AOR = 0.73; p = 0.009). In the multivariable linear regression, we found negative strong associations between prepregnancy BMI, Se (β = −0.130; p = 0.002), and Fe (β = −0.164; p < 0.0001), but positive associations with Cu (β = 0.320; p < 0.000001). The relationships between Se and maternal age (β = 0.167; p < 0.0001), Se and smoking (β = −0.106; p = 0.011) and Cu, and gestational age from the 10–14th week (β = 0.142; p < 0.001) were also found. Secondary education was associated with Zn (β = 0.132; p = 0.004) and higher education was associated with Cu (β = −0.102; p = 0.023). A higher financial status was associated with Fe (β = 0.195; p = 0.005). Other relationships were statistically insignificant. Further research is needed to clarify relationships between first trimester microelements and pregnancy complications. In addition, attention should be paid to lifestyle-related and socioeconomic factors that affect microelement levels.

Abstract
Excessive birth weight has serious perinatal consequences, and it “programs” long-term health. Mother’s nutritional status can be an important element in fetal “programming”; microelements such as selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) are involved in many metabolic processes. However, there are no studies assessing the relationship of the microelements in the peri-conceptual period with the risk of excessive birth weight. We performed a nested case control study of serum microelements’ levels in the 10–14th week of pregnancy and assessed the risk of large-for-gestational age (LGA) newborns using the data from a prospective cohort of pregnant women recruited in 2015–2016 in Poznań, Poland. Mothers delivering LGA newborns (n = 66) were examined with matched mothers delivering appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) newborns (n = 264). Microelements’ levels were quantified using mass spectrometry. The odds ratios of LGA (and 95% confidence intervals) were calculated by multivariate logistic regression. In the whole group, women with the lowest quartile of Se had a 3 times higher LGA risk compared with women in the highest Se quartile (AOR = 3.00; p = 0.013). Importantly, the result was sustained in the subgroup of women with the normal pre-pregnancy BMI (AOR = 4.79; p = 0.033) and in women with a male fetus (AOR = 6.28; p = 0.004), but it was not sustained in women with a female fetus. There were no statistical associations between Zn, Cu, and Fe levels and LGA. Our study provides some preliminary evidence for the relationships between lower serum Se levels in early pregnancy and a higher risk of large-for-gestational age birth weight. Appropriate Se intake in the periconceptual period may be important for optimal fetal growth.

Abstract
Micronutrients, as essential components of prenatal care, are important to reduce the risk for maternal and child morbidity and mortality by lowering pregnancy-related complications. The present study aimed to investigate the status of the trace elements, i.e., selenium, zinc, and manganese in pregnant and non-pregnant women from a developing country and to evaluate its relationship with maternal and child complications. Selenium, zinc, and manganese concentrations were measured in the blood serum of 80 pregnant women and compared with 40 non-pregnant healthy controls. The quantitative analyses of trace elements were performed by using the inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) method. The information about the dietary habits of the study participants was recorded by using a food frequency questionnaire. The results showed significant lower selenium and zinc levels in pregnant women as compared to the controls (2.26 ± 1.09 vs. 2.76 ± 1.15 µmol/L, p = 0.031; 21.86 ± 7.21 vs. 29.54 ± 7.62 µmol/L, p < 0.001) respectively, with no difference in manganese concentrations (1.40 ± 0.09 vs.1.38 ± 0.09 log10 nmol/L, p = 0.365). Regarding maternal and child complications, higher manganese levels were associated with an increased odds ratio for maternal complications (OR = 3.175, CI (95%) 1.631−6.181; p = 0.038). Consumption of dairy products was associated with lower selenium and manganese values. Pregnant women showed a lower serum selenium and zinc status, and in addition elevated serum manganese concentrations, which might be associated with a higher risk for maternal pregnancy/birth complications, although more studies are necessary to evaluate this association.

Abstract
Few studies were reported on trace elements' alterations in uremic patients undergoing long-term (>24 months) hemodialysis (HD), especially by using the whole blood as the biological fluid for the measuring purpose. Our objective was to develop an improved micro-sampling inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method to determine the levels of Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Se and Pb in uremic patients receiving long-term HD. A ICP-MS method with a modified whole blood sample preparation procedure with small volumes was established and applied for the simultaneous quantification of the various elements in uremic patients undergoing long-term HD. 124 eligible uremic patients receiving long-term HD (75 males and 49 females) and 77 healthy subjects (54 males and 23 females) were recruited and Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Se and Pb levels were further determined. Our results revealed that uremic patients with HD had significantly higher blood levels of Ca, Mg, Zn and Pb and lower Cu, Fe, Se and Mn concentrations than healthy controls. In conclusion, a reproducible and reliable ICP-MS method using minimal whole blood sample volume (50 μL) with a simple dilution-based preparation procedure was successfully improved, validated and applied. Uremic patients undergoing long-term HD might be at increased risk of some essential trace elements deficiency (especially for Cu, Fe and Se) or toxic trace element excess (Pb) in respect to healthy subjects. Monitoring of blood levels and supplementation of some trace elements may be indicated in uremic patients undergoing long-term HD.

Abstract
Early identification of women at risk of developing pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is very important. The involvement of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in the oxidative balance suggests the possibility of their association with this disease, in which oxidative stress plays a key role. However, it has not been established so far whether the microelement levels in early pregnancy may be risk markers of the disease, as prospective studies are limited in number. In our innovative single-center study, we identified from a prospective cohort of healthy women in the 10–14th week of a single pregnancy: women subsequently developing pregnancy-induced hypertension (n = 121) and matched women remaining normotensive (n = 363). We measured the concentrations of microelements in the serum from 10–14 week, using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The odds ratios of the disease (and 95% confidence intervals) were assessed in logistic regression. In the whole cohort, the odds ratio (OR) of PIH was 1.52 (p = 0.174) for women in the lowest (Q1) quartile of Cu (≤1540.58 µg/L) compared with women in the highest (Q4) quartile (>1937.46 µg/L), but adjusted odds ratio (AOR) was 2.17 (p = 0.019) after adjusted for pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational age at recruitment. The higher levels of Cu in the subgroup of BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 compared to normal BMI were found (1847.64 vs. 1673.36 µg/L; p < 0.0001). In the subgroup of women with the normal pre-pregnancy BMI, the adjusted odds ratio of PIH was AOR = 2.95 (p = 0.040) for Q1 vs. Q4 quartile. Our results suggest that lower Cu levels in early pregnancy may be connected with higher risk of PIH, but BMI affected estimated odds ratios. Zinc levels had no effect on the risk.

Abstract
It has not yet been established, whether or not the maternal serum selenium (Se) in early pregnancy may be a risk marker of small-for-gestational age (SGA) birth weight. Selenium is important for human health and is involved in oxidative balance, a key element in the development of the placenta and fetus. This innovative study was nested in a prospective cohort of 750 women recruited in the 10–14th week of a single pregnancy, all of whom were healthy during recruitment. We examined mothers delivering SGA infants (with birth weight <10th percentile) (n = 48) and matched mothers delivering appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants (between 10–90th percentile) (n = 192). We measured the maternal microelement concentrations in the serum from the 10–14th gestational week, using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The odds ratios of SGA (and 95% confidence intervals) were assessed in logistic regression. The mean maternal Se concentrations were lower in mothers in the SGA group compared to the AGA group (59.60 vs. 62.54 µg/L; p = 0.020). Women in the lowest Q1 quartile of Se (≤56.60 µg/L) have about three times higher risk of SGA compared to women in the higher quartiles (Q2 or Q4); the odds ratio of SGA was OR = 3.02 (p = 0.019) for Q1 vs. Q2 quartile. The risk profile graph confirms the results. We found that excessive pre-pregnancy BMI (body mass index) affected the estimated SGA odds ratios. Early pregnancy maternal serum selenium status can be a risk marker of SGA newborns and more research is needed in larger groups.

Abstract
To investigate the associations between prenatal exposure to single metal and multiple metals and the risk of low birth weight (LBW), we conducted a nested case-control study of 246 LBW and 406 NBW mother-infant pairs based on a prospective birth cohort study. 22 serum metals were detected by inductively coupled plasma quadruple mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Categorical analyses showed serum Co and Ti were associated with LBW (Co: 3rd vs 4th. quartile: OR = 1.83, 95%CI: 1.14-2.92, Ptrend = 0.043; Ti: 2nd vs. 4th quartile: OR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.32-0.81, P trend = 0.051), especially gestational age >13 weeks (Co: 3rd vs. 4th quartile: OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.13 - 3.32, Ptrend = 0.043; Ti: 2nd vs. 4th quartile: OR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.30 - 0.84, P trend= 0.073). Cubic spline analyses showed serum Co and serum Ti had non-linearity associations with LBW (Co: P for overall = 0.048, P-nonlinearity = 0.014; Ti: P for overall = 0.015, P- nonlinearity = 0.008). In multi-metal compound exposure model, 15 metals selected by elastic net model were significantly associated with the increased risk of LBW and OR (95%CI) was 5.14 (2.81-9.40). Our study suggested that lower level serum Co was positively associated with LBW and lower level serum Ti was negatively associated with LBW, especially gestational age >13 weeks, and both of them had non-linearity dose-relationships with LBW. And multi-metal compound model was significantly associated with LBW compared with single metal model.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an antioxidant nutrient whose deficiency can influence adverse outcomes of pregnancy. The aim of this study is to determine whether serum Se level in early healthy pregnancy may be a risk marker for pregnancy induced hypertension. We obtained data from our prospective study in which we recruited healthy women in weeks 10–14 of a single pregnancy. In this analysis, we examined 121 women who subsequently developed pregnancy-induced hypertension and matched 363 women who remained normotensive. We measured Se levels (using the ICP-MS technique) in the serum in weeks 10–14 of the pregnancy. The odds ratios of pregnancy-induced hypertension (95% confidence intervals) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression. We found that the mean Se level was lower in the case group compared to the control (57.51 vs. 62.89 μg/L; p = 2.6 × 10−10). Excessive body mass index (BMI) and smoking influenced the estimated odds ratios. In the subgroup of women who had never smoked with normal pre-pregnancy BMI, the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of pregnancy-induced hypertension was 15.34 (95% CI: 2.73–86.31, p = 0.002) for Se levels in the lowest quartile (≤57.68 µg/L), as compared to the highest quartile (>66.60 µg/L), after adjusting for all the accepted confounders. In the whole cohort, the prognostic value of Se by logistic regression showed that the area under curve (AUC) = 0.814. In our study, one can consider the role of Se as a risk marker of pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Abstract
Pregnant women, a vulnerable population, can be exposed to a variety of environmental metals that may adversely affect their health at elevated concentrations. Moreover, environmental exposure and risk disparities are associated with several factors such as sociodemographic characteristics, pregnancy complications, and nutritional supplementation indicators. Our aim was to investigate whether and how the urinary metal concentrations vary according to these factors in a large pregnancy and birth cohort. Urinary levels of seven metals including manganese, zinc, selenium, arsenic, cadmium, thallium, and lead were assessed in 7359 participants across Wuhan City in China. In all, 7359 urine samples from the third trimester were analyzed and 15 sociodemographic characteristics, pregnancy complications, and nutritional supplementation indicators were assessed: maternal age, household income, multivitamin supplements during pregnancy, etc. Concentrations of Zn, As, and Cd were detected in all urine samples; Mn, Se, Tl, and Pb were detected in 95.3%, 99.8%, 99.8%, and 99.9% urine samples, respectively. The geometric mean (GM) of creatinine-adjusted urinary Mn, Zn, Se, As, Cd, Tl, and Pb concentrations were 1.42, 505.44, 18.24, 30.49, 0.64, 0.55, and 3.69 μg/g. Factors that associated with environmental metals concentration were as follows: (1) Urinary Zn and Cd concentrations increased with maternal age. (2) Pregnant women with higher education had lower Cd concentrations. (3) Pregnant women with folic acid supplementation had lower Mn and with multivitamin supplementation had higher Se and lower Tl. Our results demonstrated that the maternal age, education level, folic acid supplementation, and multivitamin supplementation were significantly associated with environmental metal concentrations. Furthermore, studies are recommended to explore the influence of diet on biological metals concentrations in more detail.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the concentration and the reference ranges of essential and toxic elements in amniotic fluid (AF) and maternal serum (MS) at birth. This study was conducted among 175 healthy pregnant Caucasian European women aged 18-42. AF and maternal blood samples were collected during delivery. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique was used to determine the levels of Mg, Co, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Ba, Pb, U, Ca, Cr, Al, Mn, V, Fe, As, Se and Sb in AF and MS. The range of reference values was calculated for all analyzed elements in the serum and AF. The mean concentrations of elements, except Pb, were generally higher in MS than in AF. Multiple regression analysis showed that the maternal/newborn body mass (MBM/NBM) ratio was a strong negative predictor (among maternal age and gravidity) of Mg concentration in amniotic fluid. In the serum, MBN/NBM ratio was a strong positive predictor of Cu concentration. Moreover, regression analysis showed that maternal age was an independent positive predictor of the Se level in maternal serum. The reference value ranges of 18 essential and toxic elements were established in AF and MS among a population of healthy pregnant Polish women at delivery. The level of Mg, Co, Cu, Ca and Se in AF and MS can be determined by maternal age and MBM/NBM ratio. These results can be useful in counseling individuals with pregnancies affected by exposure to one of the parameters under investigation.

Abstract
A deficiency or excess of zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo), or manganese (Mn) may interfere with fetal organogenesis. However, the impact of these essential trace elements on the occurrence of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL ± P) remains to be elucidated. We aimed to investigate the associations between the amounts of Zn, Se, Co, Mo, and Mn in umbilical cord tissue and risk for CL ± P. This case-control study included 200 controls without congenital malformations and 88 CL ± P cases. Zn, Se, Co, Mo, and Mn concentrations in the umbilical cord were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Information was collected on demographics, lifestyle behaviors, and dietary intake. The median concentrations of Zn in cases of CL ± P and cleft lip with cleft palate (CLP), of Se in cases of CL ± P and cleft lip only (CLO), and of Co in cases of CLO were lower than in the controls. In utero exposure to higher levels of Zn was associated with reduced risk for CL ± P (OR = 0.44, 95% CI, 0.20-0.93) and for CLP (OR = 0.35, 95% CI, 0.14-0.86), and a higher level of Se was associated with reduced risk for CL ± P and CLO, with ORs of 0.47 (95% CI, 0.23-0.95) and 0.22 (95% CI, 0.08-0.67), respectively. By contrast, higher levels of Mo in the umbilical cord were associated with 2.52-fold (95% CI, 1.23-5.20) and 2.59-fold (95% CI, 1.12-5.95) higher risk for CL ± P and CLP, respectively. No association was found between Co or Mn and risk for CL ± P. In conclusion, in utero exposure to higher levels of Zn and Se was associated with reduced risk for CL ± P, but higher levels of Mo were associated with increased risk for CL ± P.

Abstract
In utero exposure to toxic heavy metals and deficient or excessive essential trace elements during pregnancy may have adverse effects on pregnant women and their offsprings, which are of great concern. The objective of the present study was to characterize serum concentrations of multiple trace elements at multiple time points during pregnancy in Chinese women. Three thousand four hundred and sixteen pregnant women in total were included from MABC (Ma'anshan Birth Cohort) study. Fasting sera in the morning and questionnaires were obtained at three separate follow-up visits. Nineteen trace elements from serum samples were analyzed, including aluminum (Al), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), barium (Ba), thallium (Tl), lead (Pb), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), mercury (Hg) and molybdenum (Mo). The total detection rates for most elements were 100% rather than Ni (99.98%), As (99.97%), Cd (99.6%), Ba (99.9%), Pb (99.8%), Hg (99.8%). The concentration distributions of 19 elements varied vastly. Median concentrations for all trace elements ranged from 38.5 ng/L to 102.9 mg/L. The moderate interclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were observed for Co, Cu, Se and Hg, ranging from 0.40 to 0.62; the lower ICCs, ranging from 0.13 to 0.32 were for Fe, Zn, Cd, Ba, Tl, Mg and Mo. The intraclass correlation effects were not observed for the remaining elements, such as Al, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, As and Pb. The concentrations of each element between three time points were significantly different; significant differences were also found between any two time points except for Ni, Cd and Mo. Many factors could affect the levels of trace elements, and a very important factor of them was season. Consequently, a single measurement of elements in sera seems not enough to describe exposure levels throughout pregnancy; additionally, season affected exposure levels of trace elements with moderate ICCs showed certain regularity. Future analyses should take sampling seasons into consideration carefully.

Abstract
Cobalt is an essential trace element and has been suggested to be involved in oxidative stress and inflammatory responses. However, researches have paid little attention to the association between serum cobalt levels during pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth (PTB, <37 week of gestation). The purpose of this study was to determine the association between maternal and umbilical cord serum cobalt concentrations and the risk of PTB. A total of 2951, 3080, and 2698 serum samples were obtained from pregnant women in the first, the second trimester, and the umbilical cord blood, respectively. The tertile levels of ln-transformed cobalt were defined as low, medium and high levels for cobalt respectively. In our study, the rate of PTB (<37 weeks of gestation) was elevated in subjects with low cobalt levels in the first trimester of pregnancy (adjusted OR 1.61, 95% CI: 1.01, 2.58) and the second trimester of pregnancy (adjusted OR 1.62, 95% CI: 1.03, 2.54). The adjusted OR for PTB was 2.46 (95% CI: 1.34, 4.53) among subjects with low cobalt levels and 2.22 (95% CI: 1.19, 4.15) among subjects with medium cobalt levels in the umbilical cord serum. Our findings demonstrated that the lower levels in maternal and umbilical cord serum cobalt were associated with the increased the risk of PTB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Emerging findings have raised concerns about significant associations between excessive copper (Cu) and abnormal glucose metabolism. Nevertheless, related researches on the relationship of Cu concentration and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are limited. The objective of this study was to determine whether plasma Cu concentration is associated with GDM. METHODS A case-control study of 248 cases of GDM and 248 age-, parity- and gestational age-matched controls was conducted in Wuhan, China between August 2012 and April 2015. Fasting blood samples of participants were collected at the time of GDM screening (≥24 weeks of gestation). Plasma Cu concentrations were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The strength of the association of plasma Cu with GDM odds was evaluated by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from conditional logistic regression. Partial Spearman or Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to estimate the interrelationship between plasma Cu and the risk factors of GDM. RESULTS Plasma Cu concentrations in the GDM group (mean ± SD: 1960.24 ± 391.98 μg/L) were higher than in the control group (mean ± SD: 1842.43 ± 387.09 μg/L) (P = 0.001). After adjustment for possible confounders, the ORs (95% CIs) of GDM across increasing quartiles of plasma Cu levels were 1.00 (referent), 1.79 (0.90-3.55), 2.72 (1.35-5.48) and 2.91 (1.48-5.75), respectively; the OR (95% CI) of GDM was 1.33 (1.06-1.67) for each standard deviation increment of plasma Cu. Moreover, Cu concentrations were positively associated with fasting plasma glucose, 1-h post-glucose load and 2-h post-glucose load (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present study indicated a significantly increased odds of GDM in association with higher concentrations of plasma Cu. Prospective cohort studies in other populations are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Contamination of soil and water by waste from abandoned uranium mines has led to chronic exposures to metal mixtures in Native American communities. Our previous work demonstrated that community exposures to mine waste increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease, as well as the likelihood of developing multiple chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease. Exposure to various environmental metals is associated with elevated oxidative stress, which is considered a contributor to these and other chronic disease states. The purpose of the current research was to assess potential associations between exposure to uranium and arsenic and evidence for increased oxidative stress as measured by urinary F2 -isoprostanes in pregnant women enrolled in the Navajo Birth Cohort Study. The current study also included an analysis of zinc as a potential mediator of oxidative stress in the study population. Urinary arsenic and uranium, serum zinc and urinary F2 -isoprostanes were measured for each study participant at enrollment. Study participants were pregnant women with median age of 26.8; 18.9% were enrolled in the 1st trimester, 44.7% were enrolled in the 2nd trimester, and 36.4% were enrolled in the 3rd trimester. Median urinary metal levels were 5.5 and 0.016 µg/g creatinine for arsenic and uranium, respectively. Multivariable regression analysis indicated a significant association between arsenic exposure and the lipid peroxidation product 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α, controlling for zinc and trimester. No associations were detected with uranium despite evidence that levels were in the Navajo Birth Cohort samples were 2.3 times the median reported for women in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-12). Zinc was not found to have any causal mediation of the effects of the other metals on oxidative stress. The current work is consistent with other studies that have detected an association between arsenic and elevated oxidative stress. In contrast to arsenic, uranium did not appear to increase oxidative stress response in this study population. These findings are relevant to assessing the potential human impact of chronic exposure to mixed metal waste from abandoned uranium mines.

Abstract
Maternal micronutrient deficiencies in pregnancy can have profound effects on fetal development and pregnancy outcome. Plasma trace minerals including copper, zinc, selenium and iron have been shown to be extremely important in supporting reproduction. We sought to determine whether there is an association between maternal trace mineral status in early pregnancy and pregnancy complications using a prospective cohort study of 1065 pregnant Australian women who were recruited as part of the Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE) study in Adelaide. Copper, zinc, selenium and iron present in the plasma were measured using mass spectrometry in samples collected at 15±1 weeks' gestation. After adjusting for covariates, women with lower plasma copper (<27.9μmol/L and 27.9-32.5μmol/L) had decreased risk for any pregnancy complication when compared with women with high plasma copper (>32.5μmol/L) (aRR=0.87; 95% CI=0.76, 0.99 and aRR=0.88; 95% CI=0.78, 1.00, respectively). This was also observed when adjusting for plasma zinc and selenium status (<27.9μmol/L: aRR=0.81; 95% CI=0.69, 0.96 and 27.9-32.5μmol/L: aRR=0.84; 95% CI=0.72, 0.98). Combined low copper and zinc status was also associated with a reduced risk of any pregnancy complication as compared with high copper and zinc status (aRR=0.80; 95% CI=0.70, 0.93). These results provide justification for further work into elucidating the mechanistic role of trace elements in early pregnancy, as well as their interactions in supporting successful pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Cobalt (Co) is an essential trace element and has been suggested to be involved in blood pressure regulation, but few studies have focused on serum Co status during pregnancy and the risks of pregnancy-induced hypertension syndrome (PIH). The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the association between serum Co levels during pregnancy and the risks of PIH, and to explore how the maternal Co status contributes to the incidence of PIH. 3260 non-hypertensive women before pregnancy with singleton births in Ma'anShan birth cohort study (MABC) were recruited with the assessment of maternal Co concentrations, additionally, the levels of 7 inflammatory factors and 3 stress factors in placentas were also determined. Relative risks (RRs) [95% confidence intervals (CIs)] for the risks of PIH were assessed and the relationships between 10 factors and maternal Co status during pregnancy were evaluated as well. A total of 194 (5.95%) women were diagnosed with PIH. The concentrations of Co varied from the first trimester to the second trimester, and maternal serum Co concentrations during pregnancy were negatively associated with the incidence of PIH in a linear fashion. There was a clear trend in RRs according to decreasing exposure to Co levels in the second trimester (RRa=1.80, 95% CI (1.26, 2.56); RRb=1.73, 95% CI (1.21, 2.46) and RRc=1.43, 95% CI (1.02, 2.04) when low Co levels comparing with high Co levels before and after adjustment for confounders; and RRa=1.29, 95% CI (0.88, 1.88); RRb=1.28, 95% CI (0.87, 1.87) and RRc=1.25, 95% CI (0.86, 1.82) when medium Co levels comparing with high Co levels before and after adjustment for confounders). In addition, the trend for the first trimester was nearly identifical to those for the second trimester (RRa=1.35, 95% CI (0.94, 1.93); RRb=1.33, 95% CI (0.93, 1.91); RRc=1.22, 95%CI (0.86, 1.73) when low Co levels comparing with high Co levels before and after adjustment for confounders; and RRa=1.10, 95% CI (0.76, 1.60); RRb=1.13, 95% CI (0.77, 1.64) and RRc=1.12, 95% CI (0.77, 1.63) before and after adjustment for confounders). Interestingly, Co concentrations in the second trimester were also inversely associated with the levels of some inflammatory factors and all three stress factors in placentas. This prospective study suggested that lower maternal serum Co concentration in the second trimester may associate with the incidence of PIH in Chinese population. Additionally, the maternal Co concentrations in the second trimester could reduce inflammatory and oxidative damage to the placenta. Further evidence is needed to support the findings and assess the mechanisms underlying the association.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace element that plays important roles in the immune system. There is little known about the role of trace elements in allergic diseases, and previous reports have shown conflicting results. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum Zn levels and total or allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. The initial candidates for this study were those who participated in the 5th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010 (n = 8,958), and 1,867 adults who had serum total and allergen specific-IgE levels measured were included. Upon adjusting for covariates, mean total IgE, Dermatophagoides farinae and dog-specific IgE levels increased significantly as the Zn levels decrease from the highest to the lowest quartile (p = 0.009, 0.004, and < 0.001, respectively). The multiple logistic regression analyses showed significant negative linear correlations between serum Zn levels and total, D. farinae-, cockroach-, and dog-specific IgE levels (p-value for linear trend = 0.004, 0.006, 0.027, and < 0.001, respectively). This study demonstrated that total/allergen specific IgE and Zn levels are significantly inversely related.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased oxidative stress (OS) and lipid peroxidation may be involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE). We conducted a case-control study to evaluate the levels of plasma lipids and trace elements as well as activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in PE. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study consisted of 100 patients who had been diagnosed with PE and 100 normotensive pregnant women who underwent medical checkups that served as the control group. Lipid profile, zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels and SOD activities were measured in the plasma of all subjects. RESULTS Our results showed that the plasma levels of triglycerides and SOD activity were significantly elevated and the levels of Zn and Cu were significantly reduced in patients with PE compared with healthy controls. Increased levels of SOD may indicate antioxidant protective mechanisms against OS in PE-complicated pregnancies. This finding may suggest an involvement of OS in the pathophysiology of PE. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated a significant negative correlation between SOD activity and levels of trace elements. Furthermore, we suggest that higher triglyceride levels and SOD activity combined with lower Zn and Cu levels may be associated with an increased risk of PE.
