Abstract
The escalating global demand for food production has predominantly relied on the extensive application of conventional fertilizers (CFs). However, the increased use of CFs has raised concerns regarding environmental risks, including soil and water contamination, especially within cereal-based cropping systems. In response, the agricultural sector has witnessed the emergence of healthier alternatives by utilizing nanotechnology and nano-fertilizers (NFs). These innovative NFs harness the remarkable properties of nanoparticles, ranging in size from 1 to 100 nm, such as nanoclays and zeolites, to enhance nutrient utilization efficiency. Unlike their conventional counterparts, NFs offer many advantages, including variable solubility, consistent and effective performance, controlled release mechanisms, enhanced targeted activity, reduced eco-toxicity, and straightforward and safe delivery and disposal methods. By facilitating rapid and complete plant absorption, NFs effectively conserve nutrients that would otherwise go to waste, mitigating potential environmental harm. Moreover, their superior formulations enable more efficient promotion of sustainable crop growth and production than conventional fertilizers. This review comprehensively examines the global utilization of NFs, emphasizing their immense potential in maintaining environmentally friendly crop output while ensuring agricultural sustainability.

Abstract
Red pitaya, the representative tropical and subtropical fruit, is vulnerable to quality deterioration due to climate or agronomic measures. Nano-selenium (Nano-Se) has shown positive effects on crop biofortification in favour of reversing this situation. In this study, Se could be enriched efficiently in red pitayas via root and foliar application by Nano-Se, which induced higher phenolic acids (16.9-94.2%), total phenols (15.7%), total flavonoids (29.5%) and betacyanins (34.1%) accumulation in flesh. Richer antioxidative features including activities of SOD (25.2%), CAT (33.8%), POD (77.2%), and levels of AsA (25.7%) and DPPH (14.7%) were obtained in Nano-Se-treated pitayas as well as in their 4-8 days shelf-life. The non-targeted metabolomics indicated a boost in amino acids, resulting in the stimulation of phenylpropanoid and betalain biosynthesis. In conclusion, the mechanism of Nano-Se biofortification for red pitaya might be fortifying pigment, as well as the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant substances formation by regulating primary and secondary metabolism facilitated by Se accumulation.

Abstract
Nanomaterials (NMs) are now gaining popularity to be used in agriculture as fertilisers to reduce the dose of conventional fertilisers and enhance nutrient use efficiency. Urea has found its application as a conventional nitrogenous fertiliser since long, however, the nutrient use efficiency of the bulk form of urea is low due to issues related to ammonia volatilisation. This study proposes a biogenic synthesis route to develop urea nanoparticles that can be used as nano-fertiliser for better uptake and hence improved nutrient efficiency. Large scale production and widespread application of these nano-fertilisers to the agricultural fields will enhance the direct exposure to workers and farmers. Therefore, the occupational safety evaluation becomes critical. In this study, we report a new method for synthesis of urea nanoparticles (TNU, absolute size: 12.14 ± 7.79 nm) followed by nano-safety evaluation. Herein, the pulmonary and ocular compatibilities of TNU were investigated in vitro and in vivo respectively. The assay for cellular mitochondrial activity was carried out on human lung fibroblasts (WI-38) under varied TNU exposure concentrations up to 72 h. The acute biocompatibility effect, ocular irritation and sub-lethal effects were measured on New Zealand Rabbit. The results show that TNU do not exhibit any cytotoxicity and detrimental cell mitochondrial activity up to the highest tested concentration of 1000 μg/mL and 72 h of testing. The animal experiment results also show that neither acute nor sub-lethal toxic effects can be detected after TNU ocular instillation up to 21 days when tested up to environmentally relevant concentration of 15 μg/mL. These results suggest the occupational safety of biogenic urea nanoparticles and support its application as nanofertiliser.

Abstract
Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread and growing global concerns. Nanoscale nutrients present higher absorption rates and improved nutrient availability and nutrient use efficiency. Co-application of nanofertilizers (NFs) with biological agents or organic compounds increases NF biocompatibility, stability, and efficacy. This study aimed to develop and evaluate zinc and iron bio-nanofertilizers formulated with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and microalgae. Nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized with the co-precipitation method and functionalized with Pseudomonas species and Spirulina platensis preparation. NPs were characterized and evaluated on seed germination, soil microbial growth, and early plant response under seedbed conditions. NPs corresponded to zinc oxide (ZnO; 77 nm) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3; 68 nm). Functionalized nanoparticles showed larger sizes, around 145-233 nm. The seedling vigor index of tomato and maize was significantly increased (32.9-46.1%) by bacteria-functionalized ZnO- and γ-Fe2O3-NPs at 75 ppm. NFs at 250 and 75 ppm significantly increased bacterial growth. NFs also improved early plant growth by increasing plant height (14-44%), leaf diameter (22-47%), and fresh weight (46-119%) in broccoli and radish, which were mainly influenced by bacteria capped ZnO- and γ-Fe2O3-NPs at 250 ppm. Beneficial effects on plant growth can be attributed to the synergistic interaction of the biological components and the zinc and iron NPs in the bio-nanofertilizers.
