Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) emerges as a versatile biomaterial with a myriad of industrial applications, particularly within the cosmetics sector. The absence of hemicellulose, lignin, and pectin in its pure cellulose structure enables favorable interactions with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic biopolymers. This enhances compatibility with active ingredients commonly employed in cosmetics, such as antioxidants, vitamins, and botanical extracts. Recent progress in BC-based materials, which encompasses membranes, films, gels, nanocrystals, and nanofibers, highlights its significant potential in cosmetics. In this context, BC not only serves as a carrier for active ingredients but also plays a crucial role as a structural agent in formulations. The sustainability of BC production and processing is a central focus, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to strengthen scalability and cost-effectiveness. Future research endeavors, including the exploration of novel cultivation strategies and functionalization techniques, aim to maximize BC's therapeutic potential while broadening its scope in personalized skincare regimes. Therefore, this review emphasizes the crucial contribution of BC to the cosmetics sector, underlining its role in fostering innovation, sustainability, and ethical skincare practices. By integrating recent research findings and industry trends, this review proposes a fresh approach to advancing both skincare science and environmental responsibility in the cosmetics industry.

Abstract
The first-known As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata is efficient in As uptake and translocation, which can be used for phytoremediation of As-contaminated soils. However, the underlying mechanisms of As-enhanced plant growth are unknown. We used untargeted metabolomics to investigate the potential metabolites and associated metabolic pathways regulating As-enhanced plant growth in P. vittata. After 60 days of growth in an MS-agar medium containing 15 mg kg-1 As, P. vittata biomass was 33-34 % greater than the no-As control. Similarly, the As contents in P. vittata roots and fronds were 272 and 1300 mg kg-1, considerably greater than the no-As control. Univariate and multivariate analyses based on electrospray ionization indicate that As exposure changed the expression of 1604 and 1248 metabolites in positive and negative modes. By comparing with the no-As control, As exposure significantly changed the expression of 14 metabolites including abscisic acid, d-glucose, raffinose, stachyose, chitobiose, xylitol, gibberellic acids, castasterone, citric acid, riboflavin-5-phosphate, ubiquinone, ubiquinol, UDP-glucose, and GDP-glucose. These metabolites are involved in phytohormone synthesis, energy metabolism, and sugar metabolism and may all potentially contribute to regulating As-enhanced plant growth in P. vittata. Our data provide clues to understanding the metabolic regulations of As-enhanced plant growth in P. vittata, which helps to enhance its phytoremediation efficiency of As-contaminated soils.

Abstract
Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a sustainable, renewable, and eco-friendly nanomaterial, which has gained great attentions in both academic and industrial fields. Two bacterial nanocellulose-producing strains (CVV and CVN) were isolated from apple vinegar sources, presenting high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (96%-98%) with Komagataeibacter species. The biofilm was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the presence of rod-shaped bacteria intricately embedded in the polymeric matrix composed of nanofibers of bacterial nanocellulose. FTIR spectrum and XRD pattern additionally confirmed the characteristic chemical structure associated with this material. The yields and productivities achieved during 10 days of fermentation were compared with Komagataeibacter xylinus ATCC 53524, resulting in low levels of BNC production. However, a remarkable increase in the BNC yield was achieved for CVV (690% increase) and CVN (750% increase) strains at day 6 of the fermentation upon adding 22 mM citrate buffer into the medium. This effect is mainly attributed to the buffering capacity of the modified Yakamana medium, which allowed to maintain pH close to 4.0 until day 6, though in combination with additional factors including stimulation of the gluconeogenesis pathway and citrate assimilation as a carbon source. In addition, the productivities determined for both isolated strains (0.850 and 0.917 g L-1 d-1) compare favorably to previous works, supporting current efforts to improve fermentation performance in static cultures and the feasibility of scaling-up BNC production in these systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Komagataeibacter nataicola (K. nataicola) is a gram-negative acetic acid bacterium that produces natural bacterial cellulose (BC) as a fermentation product under acidic conditions. The goal of this work was to study the complete genome of K. nataicola and gain insight into the functional genes in K. nataicola that are responsible for BC synthesis in acidic environments. METHODS AND RESULT The pure culture of K. nataicola was obtained from yeast-glucose-calcium carbonate (YGC) agar, followed by genomic DNA extraction, and subjected to whole genome sequencing on a Nanopore flongle flow cell. The genome of K. nataicola consists of a 3,767,936 bp chromosome with six contigs and 4,557 protein coding sequences. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree and average nucleotide identity analysis confirmed that the bacterial isolate was K. nataicola. The gene annotation via RAST server discovered the presence of cellulose synthase, along with three genes associated with lactate utilization and eight genes involved in lactate fermentation that could potentially contribute to the increase in acid concentration during BC synthesis. CONCLUSION A more comprehensive genome study of K. nataicola may shed light into biological pathway in BC productivity as well as benefit the analysis of metabolites generated and understanding of biological and chemical interactions in BC production later.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC, biocellulose) is a natural polymer of microbiological origin that meets the criteria of a biomaterial for food packaging. The aim of the research was to obtain biocellulose and test its chemical as well as physical characterization as a potential packaging for Dutch-type cheeses. Four variants of biocellulose-based material were obtained: not grinded and grinded variants obtained from YPM medium (YPM-BCNG and YPM-BCG, respectively) and not grinded and grinded variants from acid whey (AW) (AW-BCNG and AW-BCG, respectively). It was demonstrated that AW-BCNG exhibited the highest thermostability and the highest degradation temperature (348 °C). YPM-BCG and YPM-BCNG demonstrated higher sorption properties (approx. 40 %) compared to AW-BCG and AW-BCNG (approx. 15 %). Cheese packaged in biocellulose (except for YPM-BCNG) did not differ in water, fat, or protein content compared to the control cheese. All of the biocellulose packaging variants provided the cheeses with protection against unfavourable microflora. It was demonstrated that cheeses packaged in biocellulose were characterized by lower hardness, fracturability, gumminess, and chewiness than the control cheese sample. The results obtained indicate that BC may be a suitable packaging material for ripening cheeses, which shows a positive impact on selected product features.

Abstract
The effect of thiamine (TA), ascorbic acid (AA), citric acid, and gallic acid (GA) on bacterial cellulose (BC) production by Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans, in synthetic (Hestrin and Schramm, HS) and natural substrates (industrial raisins finishing side stream extract, FSSE; orange juice, OJ; green tea extract, GTE), was investigated. The Response Surface Methodology was found reliable for BC yield prediction and optimization. Higher yields were achieved in the FSSE substrates, especially those supplemented with AA, TA, and GA (up to 19.4 g BC/L). The yield in the non-fortified substrates was 1.1-5.4 and 11.6-15.7 g/L, in HS and FSSE, respectively. The best yield in the natural non-fortified substrate FSSE-OJ-GTE (50-20-30 %), was 5.9 g/L. The porosity, crystallinity, and antioxidant properties of the produced BC films were affected by both the substrate and the drying method (freeze- or oven-drying). The natural substrates and the process wastewaters can be further exploited towards added value and sustainability. Take Home Message Sentence: Raisin and citrus side-streams can be efficiently combined for bacterial cellulose production, enhanced by other vitamin- and phenolic-rich substrates such as green tea.

Abstract
Algae-based biopolymers can be used in diverse energy-related applications, such as separators and polymer electrolytes in batteries and fuel cells and also as microalgal biofuel, which is regarded as a highly renewable energy source. For these purposes, different physical, thermochemical, and biochemical properties are necessary, which are discussed within this review, such as porosity, high temperature resistance, or good mechanical properties for batteries and high energy density and abundance of the base materials in case of biofuel, along with the environmental aspects of using algae-based biopolymers in these applications. On the other hand, bacterial biopolymers are also often used in batteries as bacterial cellulose separators or as biopolymer network binders, besides their potential use as polymer electrolytes. In addition, they are also regarded as potential sustainable biofuel producers and converters. This review aims at comparing biopolymers from both aforementioned sources for energy conversion and storage. Challenges regarding the production of algal biopolymers include low scalability and low cost-effectiveness, and for bacterial polymers, slow growth rates and non-optimal fermentation processes often cause challenges. On the other hand, environmental benefits in comparison with conventional polymers and the better biodegradability are large advantages of these biopolymers, which suggest further research to make their production more economical.

Abstract
The effect of in-situ biochemical modification on the synthesis, structure, and function of xanthan gum based bacterial cellulose generated from Tieguanyin oolong tea residue hydrolysate was evaluated for the first time. This modification could overcome the inhibitory effect of the hydrolysate and the bacterial cellulose yield with 0.6% xanthan gum addition increased by 260.8% compared with that without xanthan gum addition. Bacterial cellulose and xanthan gum were combined by the in-situ modification and the alteration of fermentation medium rheological properties by xanthan gum addition might be beneficial for their combination. The average diameter of the bacterial cellulose microfibrils was increased by the modification, and it had a great influence on the crystalline structure of the bacterial cellulose. Additionally, both the water absorption and texture properties of the bacterial cellulose was strengthened by the modification. Overall, this modification showed great potential for efficient and effective xanthan gum based bacterial cellulose production.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC), as a natural renewable polymer material, has the advantages of porous nanonetwork structure, high degree of polymerization, high purity, high crystallinity, excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, BC lacks antibacterial properties, which leads to the limitation of BC material in food packaging and medical materials. In this study, a new antibacterial material using the combination of montmorillonite (MMT), BC and exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by Weissella confusa H2 was synthesized. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that BC-EPS, BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT composite membranes conformed to the typical type I cellulose structure. Compared to BC membrane, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the porosity of BC-EPS, BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT composite membranes was low and compact. The physical properties of BC-EPS, BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes showed lower water vapor transmittance. The BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes exhibit a lower swelling ratio in 120 min. The thermal properties show that BC-EPS, BC-MTT and BC-EPS-MTT composite membranes have higher thermal stability (352 °C, 310 °C, 314 °C). Additionally, both BC-MMT and BC-EPS-MMT demonstrated strong inhibitory effects against various bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi A, and Bacillus subtilis. The exceptional properties exhibited by composite membranes establishes them as a highly promising option in the field of food packaging and medical material applications.

Abstract
This review discusses the application of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) and modified BNC in treating wastewater containing heavy metals and dye contaminants. It also highlights the challenges and future perspectives of BNC and its composites. Untreated industrial effluents containing toxic heavy metals are systematically discharged into public waters. In particular, lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As) are very harmful to human health and, in some cases, may lead to death. Several methods such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, membrane filtration, coagulation, and Fenton oxidation are used to remove these heavy metals from the environment. However, these methods involve the use of numerous chemicals whilst producing high amount of toxic sludge. Meanwhile, the development of the adsorption-based technique has provided an alternative way of treating wastewater using BNC. Bacterial nanocellulose requires less energy for purification and has higher purity than plant cellulose. In general, the optimum growth parameters are crucial in BNC production. Even though native BNC can be used for the removal of heavy metals and dyes, the incorporation of other materials, such as polyethyleneimine, graphene oxide, calcium carbonate and polydopamine can improve sorption efficiencies.

Abstract
Recently, degradable biopolymers have become increasingly important as potential environmentally friendly biomaterials, providing a wide range of applications in various fields. Bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are biomacromolecules, which due to their unique properties have found applications in biomedicine, foodstuff, textiles, cosmetics, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, nanoelectronics, and environmental remediation. One of the important commercial polysaccharides produced on an industrial scale is xanthan. In recent years, the range of its application has expanded significantly. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is another unique EPS with a rapidly increasing range of applications. Due to the great prospects for their practical application, the development of their highly efficient production remains an important task. The present review summarizes the strategies for the cost-effective production of such important biomacromolecules as xanthan and BC and demonstrates for the first time common approaches to their efficient production and to obtaining new functional materials for a wide range of applications, including wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, environmental remediation, nanoelectronics, and 3D bioprinting. In the end, we discuss present limitations of xanthan and BC production and the line of future research.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer with applications in numerous industries such as food and pharmaceutical sectors. In this study, various hydrocolloids including modified starches (oxidized starch-1404 and hydroxypropyl starch-1440), locust bean gum, xanthan gum (XG), guar gum, and carboxymethyl cellulose were added to the Hestrin-Schramm medium to improve the production performance and microstructure of BC by Gluconacetobacter entanii isolated from coconut water. After 14-day fermentation, medium supplemented with 0.1% carboxymethyl cellulose and 0.1% XG resulted in the highest BC yield with dry BC content of 9.82 and 6.06 g/L, respectively. In addition, scanning electron microscopy showed that all modified films have the characteristic three-dimensional network of cellulose nanofibers with dense structure and low porosity as well as larger fiber size compared to control. X-ray diffraction indicated that BC fortified with carboxymethyl cellulose exhibited lower crystallinity while Fourier infrared spectroscopy showed characteristic peaks of both control and modified BC films.

Abstract
The jujube is one of the most popular fruits in China because of its delicious taste and high nutritional value. It has a long history of usage as an important food or traditional medicine. However, the jujube is easily infected by fungi, which causes economic losses and threatens human health. When the jujube was infected by Aspergillus niger (H1), the changes in nutritional qualities were determined, such as the content of total acid, vitamin C, reducing sugar, etc. In addition, the ability of A. niger (H1) to produce ochratoxin A (OTA) in different inoculation times and culture media was evaluated, and the content of OTA in jujubes was also analyzed. After jujubes were infected by A. niger (H1), the total acid, and vitamin C contents increased, while the total phenol content decreased, and the reducing sugar content increased after an initial decrease. Although A. niger (H1) infection caused the jujubes to rot and affected its quality, OTA had not been detected. This research provides a theoretical foundation for maximizing edible safety and evaluating the losses caused by fungal disease in jujubes.

Abstract
It is well acknowledged that microplastics are a major environmental problem and that the use of plastics, both petro- and bio- based, should be reduced. Nevertheless, it is also a necessity to reduce the amount of the already spread plastics. These cannot be easily degraded in the nature and accumulate in the food supply chain with major danger for animals and human life. It has been shown in the literature that advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) modify the surface of polylactic acid (PLA) materials in a way that bacteria more efficiently dock on their surface and eventually degrade them. In the present work we investigated the influence of different AOPs (ultrasounds, ultraviolet irradiation, and their combination) on the biodegradability of PLA films treated for different times between 1 and 6 h. The pre-treated samples have been degraded using a home model compost as well as a cocktail of commercial enzymes at mesophilic temperatures (37 °C and 42 °C, respectively). Degradation degree has been measured and degradation products have been identified. Excellent degradation of PLA films has been achieved with enzyme cocktail containing commercial alkaline proteases and lipases of up to 90% weight loss. For the first time, we also report valorization of PLA into bacterial nanocellulose after enzymatic hydrolysis of the samples.

Abstract
Every year, all over the world, the industry generates huge amounts of residues. Side-streams are most often used as feed, landfilled, incinerated, or discharged into sewage. These disposal methods are far from perfect. Taking into account the composition of the side-streams, it seems that they should be used as raw materials for further processing, in accordance with the zero-waste policy and sustainable development. The article describes the latest achievements in biotechnology in the context of bacterial reprocessing of residues with the simultaneous acquisition of their metabolites. The article focuses on four metabolites - bacterial cellulose, propionic acid, vitamin B12 and PHAs. Taking into account global trends (e.g. food, packaging, medicine), it seems that in the near future there will be a sharp increase in demand for this type of compounds. In order for their production to be profitable and commercialised, cheap methods of its obtaining must be developed. The article, in addition to obtaining these bacterial metabolites from side-streams, also discusses e.g. factors affecting their production, metabolic pathways and potential and current applications. The presented chapters provide a complete overview of the current knowledge on above metabolites, which can be helpful for the academic and scientific communities and the several industries. Abstract
Bacterial cellulose has advantages over plant-derived cellulose, which make its use for industrial applications easier and more profitable. Its intrinsic properties have been stimulating the global biopolymer market, with strong growth expectations in the coming years. Several bacterial species are capable of producing bacterial cellulose under different culture conditions; in this context, strategies aimed at metabolic engineering and several possibilities of carbon sources have provided opportunities for the bacterial cellulose's biotechnological exploration. In this article, an overview of biosynthesis pathways in different carbon sources for the main producing microorganisms, metabolic flux under different growth conditions, and their influence on the structural and functional characteristics of bacterial cellulose is provided. In addition, the main industrial applications and ways to reduce costs and optimize its production using alternative sources are discussed, contributing to new insights on the exploitation of this biomaterial in the context of the bioeconomy.

Abstract
Bacterial nanocellulose (BC) is a highly versatile biopolymer currently pursued as a material of choice in varied themes of biomedical and material science research fields. With the aim to extend the biotechnological applications, the genetic tractability of the BC producers within the Komagataeibacter genus and its potential as an alternative host chassis in synthetic biology have been extensively studied. However, such studies have been largely focused on the model Komagataeibacter spp. Here, we present a novel K. intermedius strain capable of utilizing glucose, and glycerol sources for biomass and BC synthesis. Genome assembly identified one bacterial cellulose synthetase (bcs) operon containing the complete gene set encoding the BC biogenesis machinery (bcsI) and three additional copies (bcsII-IV). Investigations on the genetic tractability confirmed plasmid transformation, propagation of vectors with pBBR1 and p15A origin of replications and constitutive and inducible induction of recombinant protein in K. intermedius ENS15. This study provides the first report on the genetic tractability of K. intermedius, serving as starting point towards future genetic engineering of this strain.

Abstract
Bacterial Cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer with numerous applications. The growth of BC-producing bacteria, Komagataeibacter intermedius, could be stimulated by Dekkera bruxellensis, however, the effect on BC yield needs further investigation. This study investigates BC production and biochemical changes in the K. intermedius-D. bruxellensis co-culture system. D. bruxellensis was introduced at various concentrations (103 and 106 CFU/mL) and inoculation times (days 0 and 3). BC yield was ~24% lower when D. bruxellensis was added at 103 CFU/mL compared to K. intermedius alone (0.63 ± 0.11 g/L). The lowest BC yield was observed when 103 CFU/mL yeast was added on day 0, which could be compromised by higher gluconic acid production (10.08 g/L). In contrast, BC yields increased by ~88% when 106 CFU/mL D. bruxellensis was added, regardless of inoculation time. High BC yield might correlate with faster sugar consumption or increased ethanol production when 106 CFU/mL D. bruxellensis was added on day 0. These results suggest that cell concentration and inoculation time have crucial impacts on species interactions in the co-culture system and product yield.

Abstract
Curcumin and triangular silver nanoplates (TSNP)-incorporated bacterial cellulose (BC) films present an ideal antimicrobial material for biomedical applications as they afford a complete set of requirements, including a broad range of long-lasting potency and superior efficacy antimicrobial activity, combined with low toxicity. Here, BC was produced by Komagataeibacter medellinensis ID13488 strain in the presence of curcumin in the production medium (2 and 10%). TSNP were incorporated in the produced BC/curcumin films using ex situ method (21.34 ppm) and the antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Escherichia coli ATCC95922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 bacterial strains. Biological activity of these natural products was assessed in cytotoxicity assay against lung fibroblasts and in vivo using Caenorhabditis elegans and Danio rerio as model organisms. Derived films have shown excellent antimicrobial performance with growth inhibition up to 67% for E. coli and 95% for S. aureus. In a highly positive synergistic interaction, BC films with 10% curcumin and incorporated TSNP have shown reduced toxicity with 80% MRC5 cells survival rate. It was shown that only 100% concentrations of film extracts induce low toxicity effect on model organisms’ development. The combined and synergistic advanced anti-infective functionalities of the curcumin and TSNP incorporated in BC have a high potential for development for application within the clinical setting.

Abstract
Among naturally produced polymers, bacterial cellulose is receiving enormous attention due to remarkable properties, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. However, the low yield, the instability of microbial strains and the limited knowledge of the mechanisms regulating the metabolism of producer strains, limit the large-scale production of bacterial cellulose. In this study, Komagataeibacter xylinus K2G30 was adapted in mannitol based medium, a carbon source that is also available in agri-food wastes. K. xylinus K2G30 was continuously cultured by replacing glucose with mannitol (2% w/v) for 210 days. After a starting lag-phase, in which no changes were observed in the utilization of mannitol and in bacterial cellulose production (cycles 1–25), a constant improvement of the phenotypic performances was observed from cycle 26 to cycle 30, accompanied by an increase in mannitol consumption. At cycle 30, the end-point of the experiment, bacterial cellulose yield increased by 38% in comparision compared to cycle 1. Furthermore, considering the mannitol metabolic pathway, D-fructose is an intermediate in the bioconversion of mannitol to glucose. Based on this consideration, K. xylinus K2G30 was tested in fructose-based medium, obtaining the same trend of bacterial cellulose production observed in mannitol medium. The adaptive laboratory evolution approach used in this study was suitable for the phenotypic improvement of K. xylinus K2G30 in bacterial cellulose production. Metabolic versatility of the strain was confirmed by the increase in bacterial cellulose production from D-fructose-based medium. Moreover, the adaptation on mannitol did not occur at the expense of glucose, confirming the versatility of K2G30 in producing bacterial cellulose from different carbon sources. Results of this study contribute to the knowledge for designing new strategies, as an alternative to the genetic engineering approach, for bacterial cellulose production.

Abstract
Gas fermentation is a well-established process for the conversion of greenhouse gases from industrial wastes into valuable multi-carbon chemicals. Here, a two-stage process was developed to expand the product range of gas fermentation and synthesized the versatile biopolymer bacterial cellulose (BC). In the first stage, the acetogen Clostridium autoethanogenum was cultivated with H2:CO:CO2 and produced ethanol and acetate. In the second stage, BC-synthesizing Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans was grown in the spent medium from gas fermentation. K. sucrofermentans was able to produce BC autotrophically from gas-derived metabolites alone as well as mixotrophically with the addition of exogenous glucose. In these circumstances, 1.31 g/L BC was synthesized with a major energetic contribution from C1 gas fermentation products. Mixotrophic BC characterization reveals unique properties including augmented mechanical strength, porosity, and crystallinity. This proof-of-concept process demonstrates that BC can be produced from gases and holds good potential for the efficient conversion of C1 wastes.

Abstract
This research is dedicated to the studies of the microscale morphology of bacterial cellulose (BC) obtained by means of static cultivation of Gluconacetobacter hansenii GH-1/2008. We found that the microscale morphology depended on the BC production rate that was varied by using different glucose concentrations in the cultivation medium. It was revealed that at higher production rates, BC fibrils were aligned in a liquid-crystalline-like (LC-like) order. The observed helical alignment was always left-handed. The half-periods of the helix varied from 50 μm to 150 μm depending on the cultivation conditions. The mechanical and water absorption properties of the obtained BC pellicles were measured. The former correlated mainly with the density of the samples; the latter were the best for films with layered structure, where the BC had segregated into fleece sheets separated by gaps with low density of fibrils.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a valuable biopolymer that is increasingly used in medical, pharmaceutical and food industries with its excellent physicochemical properties as high water-holding capacity, nanofibrillar structure, large surface area, porosity, mechanical strength and biocompatibility. Accordingly, the isolation, identification and characterization of potent BC producers from grape, thorn apple and apple vinegars were performed in this study. The strains isolated from grape and apple vinegars were identified as Komagataeibacter maltaceti and the strain isolated from thorn apple vinegar was identified as Komagataeibacter nataicola with 16S rRNA analysis. Optimized conditions were found as 8% dextrin, 1.5% (peptone + yeast extract) and 10% inoculation amount at pH 6.0 with a productivity rate of 1.15 g/d/L, a yield of 8.06% and a dry weight of 6.45 g/L for K. maltaceti, and 10% maltose, 1% (peptone + yeast extract) and 10% inoculation amount at pH 6.0 with a productivity rate of 0.96 g/L/d, a yield of 5.35% and a dry weight of 5.35 g/L for K. nataicola. Obtained BC from K. maltaceti and K. nataicola strains was more than 2.56- and 1.86-fold when compared with BC obtained from HS media and exhibited 95.1% and 92.5% WHC, respectively. Based on the characterization results, BC pellicles show characteristic FT-IR bands and have ultrafine 3D structures with high thermal stability. By means of having ability to assimilate monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharide used in this study, it is predicted that both isolated Komagataeibacter species can be used in the production of biopolymers from wastes containing complex carbon sources in the future.

Abstract
It has been more than a decade since Acetobacter senegalensis was isolated, identified, and described as a thermotolerant strain of acetic acid bacteria. It was isolated from mango fruits in Senegal and used for industrial vinegar production in developing countries, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. The strain was tested during several spirit vinegar fermentation processes at relatively high temperatures in accordance with African acclimation. The upstream fermentation process had significant stress factors, which are highlighted in this review so that the fermentation process can be better controlled. Due to its high industrial potential, this strain was extensively investigated by diverse industrial microbiologists worldwide; they concentrated on its microbiological, physiological, and genomic features. A research group based in Belgium proposed an important project for the investigation of the whole-genome sequence of A. senegalensis. It would use a 454-pyrosequencing technique to determine and corroborate features that could give this strain significant diverse bioindustrial applications. For instance, its application in cocoa bean fermentation has made it a more suitable acetic acid bacterium for the making of chocolate than Acetobacter pasteurianus. Therefore, in this paper, we present a review that summarizes the current research on A. senegalensis at its microbial and genomic levels and also its specific bioindustrial applications, which can provide economic opportunities for African agribusiness.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an emerging biological material with unique properties and structure, which has attracted more and more attention. In this study, Gluconacetobacter xylinus was used to convert sweet potato residues (SPR) hydrolysate to BC. SPR was directly used without pretreatment, and almost no inhibitors were generated, which was beneficial to subsequent glucan conversion and SPR-BC synthesis. SPR-BC production was 11.35 g/L under the optimized condition. The comprehensive structural characterization and mechanical analysis demonstrated that the crystallinity, maximum thermal degradation temperature, and tensile strength of SPR-BC were 87.39%, 263 °C, and 6.87 MPa, respectively, which were superior to those of BC produced with the synthetic medium. SPR-BC was added to rice straw pulp to enhance the bonding force between fibers and the indices of tensile, burst, and tear of rice straw paper. The indices were increased by 83.18%, 301.27%, and 169.58%, respectively. This research not only expanded the carbon source of BC synthesis, reduced BC production cost, but also improved the quality of rice straw paper.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) represents a novel bio-origin nonomaterial with its unique properties having diverse applications. Increased market demand and low yield are the major reason for its higher cost. Bacteria belonging to Komagataeibacter sp are the most exploited ones for BC production. Development of a cost-effective bioprocess for higher BC production is desirable. Though static fermentation modes have been majorly employed for BC production using tray fermenters, agitated mode has also been employed successfully with air-lift fermenters as well as stirred tank reactors. Bioprocess advances in recent years has led BC production to an upper level; however, challenges of aeration requirement and labor cost towards the higher end is associated with static cultivation at large scale. We have discussed the bioprocess development for BC production in recent years along with the challenges associated and the path forward.

Abstract
A new strain of bacteria producing cellulose was isolated from Kombucha and identified as Komagataeibacter hansenii, named SI1. In static conditions, the strain synthesises bacterial nanocellulose with an improved ability to stretch. In this study, utilisation of various carbon and nitrogen sources and the impact of initial pH was assessed in terms of bacterial nanocellulose yield and properties. K. hansenii SI1 produces cellulose efficiently in glycerol medium at pH 5.0-6.0 with a yield of 3.20-3.60 g/L. Glucose medium led to the synthesis of membrane characterised by a strain of 77%, which is a higher value than in the case of another Komagataeibacter species. Supplementation of medium with vitamin C results in an enhanced porosity and improves the ability of bacterial nanocellulose to stretch (up to 123%). The properties of modified membranes were studied by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and mechanical tests. The results show that bacterial nanocellulose produced in SH medium and vitamin C-supplemented medium has unique properties (porosity, tensile strength and strain) without changing the chemical composition of cellulose. The method of production BNC with altered properties was the issue of Polish patent application no. P.431265.

Abstract
Biologically active bacterial cellulose (BC) was efficiently synthesized in situ using wine pomace and its hydrolysate. The structural and biomechanical properties together with the biological functions of the BC were investigated. Functional BC from wine pomace and its enzymatic hydrolysate were of high purity and had higher crystallinity indexes (90.61% and 89.88%, respectively) than that from HS medium (82.26%). FTIR results proved the in-situ bindings of polyphenols to the functionalized BC. Compared to BC from HS medium, wine pomace-based BC had more densely packed ultrafine fibrils, higher diameter range distributions of fiber ribbon, but lower thermal decomposition temperatures, as revealed by the SEM micrographs and DSC data. Meanwhile, wine pomace-based BC exhibited higher loads in tensile strength and higher hardness (4.95 ± 0.31 N and 5.13 ± 0.63 N, respectively) than BC in HS medium (3.43 ± 0.14 N). Furthermore, BC synthesized from wine pomace hydrolysate exhibited a slower release rate of phenolic compounds, and possessed more antioxidant activities and better bacteriostatic effects than BC from wine pomace. These results demonstrate that BC synthesized in situ from wine pomace (especially from enzymatic hydrolysate) is a promising biomolecule with a potential application in wound dressing, tissue engineering, and other biomedical fields.

Abstract
A cellulose-producing bacterium Komagataeibacter rhaeticus K15 was isolated from kombucha tea, and its metabolic pathways and cellulose synthesis operon were analyzed by genome sequencing. Different from the reported K. rhaeticus, the K15 produced little gluconic acid (2.26 g/L) when glucose was the sole carbon source and has the capacity for high cellulose production (4.76 g/L) with other carbon sources. Furthermore, six nitrogen-fixing genes were found to be responsible for the survival of K15 on a nitrogen-free medium. Based on its fermentation characteristics, K15 was cultured in a kitchen waste medium as a strategy for green and sustainable bacterial cellulose production. The SEM, XRD, and FTIR results indicated that synthesized cellulose has a mean diameter of 40-50 nm nanofiber, good crystallinity, and the same chemical structure. The K15 strain provides a highly viable alternative strategy to reduce the costs of bacterial cellulose production using agro-industrial residues as nutrient sources.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is recognized as a multifaceted, versatile biomaterial with abundant applications. Groups of microorganisms such as bacteria are accountable for BC synthesis through static or agitated fermentation processes in the presence of competent media. In comparison to static cultivation, agitated cultivation provides the maximum yield of the BC. A pure cellulose BC can positively interact with hydrophilic or hydrophobic biopolymers while being used in the biomedical domain. From the last two decades, the reinforcement of biopolymer-based biocomposites and its applicability with BC have increased in the research field. The harmony of hydrophobic biopolymers can be reduced due to the high moisture content of BC in comparison to hydrophilic biopolymers. Mechanical properties are the important parameters not only in producing green composite but also in dealing with tissue engineering, medical implants, and biofilm. The wide requisition of BC in medical as well as industrial fields has warranted the scaling up of the production of BC with added economy. This review provides a detailed overview of the production and properties of BC and several parameters affecting the production of BC and its biocomposites, elucidating their antimicrobial and antibiofilm efficacy with an insight to highlight their therapeutic potential.

Abstract
Current research in industrial microbiology and biotechnology focuses on the production of biodegradable microbial polymers as an environmentally friendly alternative to the still dominant fossil hydrocarbon-based plastics. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is important among microbial polymers due to its valuable properties and broad applications in variety of fields from medical to industrial technologies. However, the increase in BC production and its wider deployment is still limited by high costs of traditionally used raw materials. It is therefore necessary to focus on less expensive inputs, such as agricultural and industrial by-products or waste including the more extended use of glycerol. It is the environmentally harmful by-product of biofuel production and reducing it will also reduce the risk of environmental pollution. The experimental data obtained so far confirm that glycerol can be used as the renewable carbon source to produce BC through more efficient and environmentally friendly bioprocesses. This review summarizes current knowledge on the use of glycerol for the production of commercially prospective BC, including information on producer cultures, fermentation modes and methods used, nutrient medium composition, cultivation conditions, and bioprocess productivity. Data on the use of some related sugar alcohols, such as mannitol, arabitol, xylitol, for the microbial synthesis of cellulose are also considered, as well as the main methods and applications of glycerol pre-treatment briefly described.

Abstract
Komagataeibacter spp. has been used for the bioconversion of industrial wastes and lignocellulosic hydrolysates to bacterial cellulose (BC). Recently, studies have demonstrated the capacity of Komagataeibacter spp. in the biotransformation of inhibitors found in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, aromatic lignin-derived monomers (LDMs) and acetate. In general, detoxification and BC synthesis from lignocellulosic inhibitors requires a carbon flow from acetyl-coA towards tricarboxylic acid and gluconeogenesis, respectively. However, the related molecular aspects have not yet been identified in Komagataeibacter spp. In this study, we isolated a cellulose-producing bacterium capable of synthesizing BC in a minimal medium containing crude glycerol, a by-product from the biodiesel production process. The isolate, affiliated to Komagataeibacter genus, synthesized cellulose in a minimal medium containing glucose (3.3 ± 0.3 g/L), pure glycerol (2.2 ± 0.1 g/L) and crude glycerol (2.1 ± 0.1 g/L). Genome assembly and annotation identified four copies of bacterial cellulose synthase operon and genes for redirecting the carbon from the central metabolic pathway to gluconeogenesis. According to the genome annotations, a BC production route from acetyl-CoA, a central metabolic intermediate, was hypothesized and was validated using acetate. We identified that when K. rhaeticus ENS9b was grown in a minimal medium supplemented with acetate, BC production was not observed. However, in the presence of readily utilizable substrates, such as spent yeast hydrolysate, acetate supplementation improved BC synthesis.

Abstract
The purpose of the work was to obtain composites based on bionanocellulose (BNC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for specific biomedical and cosmetic applications and to determine how the method and conditions of their preparation affect their utility properties. Three different ways of manufacturing these composites (in-situ method and ex-situ methods combined with sterilization or impregnation) were presented. The structure and morphology of BNC/PVA composites were studied by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and scanning microscopy (SEM, AFM). Surface properties were tested by contact angle measurements. The degree of crystallinity of the BNC fibrils was determined by means of the XRD method. The mechanical properties of the BNC/PVA films were examined using tensile tests and via the determination of their bursting strength. The water uptake of the obtained materials was determined through the gravimetric method. The results showed that PVA added to the nutrient medium caused an increase in biosynthesis yield. Moreover, an increase in base weight was observed in composites of all types due to the presence of PVA. The ex-situ composites revealed excellent water absorption capacity. The in-situ composites appeared to be the most durable and elastic materials.

Abstract
In this work, we verified the possibility of valorizing a major waste product of the potato starch industry, potato tuber juice (PJ). We obtained a cost-effective, ecological-friendly microbiological medium that yielded bacterial cellulose (BC) with properties equivalent to those from conventional commercial Hestrin–Schramm medium. The BC yield from the PJ medium (>4 g/L) was comparable, despite the lack of any pre-treatment. Likewise, the macro- and microstructure, physicochemical parameters, and chemical composition showed no significant differences between PJ and control BC. Importantly, the BC obtained from PJ was not cytotoxic against fibroblast cell line L929 in vitro and did not contain any hard-to-remove impurities. The PJ-BC soaked with antiseptic exerted a similar antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as to BC obtained in the conventional medium and supplemented with antiseptic. These are very important aspects from an application standpoint, particularly in biomedicine. Therefore, we conclude that using PJ for BC biosynthesis is a path toward significant valorization of an environmentally problematic waste product of the starch industry, but also toward a significant drop in BC production costs, enabling wider application of this biopolymer in biomedicine.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural polymer secreted as a protective cell covering of certain bacterial species. In contrary to plant cellulose, BC possesses some unique features like high moisture-holding capacity, high durability, high liquid absorbing capabilities, biostability, and biodegradability, makes BC an excellent raw material in wide-ranging areas like biomedical, food, agriculture, paper, textile industries and electronics. The main objective of this review is to discuss various aspects of BC production (different sources for bacterial strain isolation, culture media and, its alternatives also major culture techniques). In addition, various applications of BC are also reviewed.

Abstract
The use of bio-based residues is one of the key indicators towards sustainable development goals. In this work, bacterial cellulose, a residue from the fermentation of kombucha tea, was tested as a reinforcing nanofiber network in an emulsion-polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix. The use of the nanofiber network is facilitating the formation of nanocomposites with well-dispersed nanofibers without using organic solvents or expensive methodologies. Moreover, the bacterial cellulose network structure can serve as a template for the emulsion polymerization of PMMA. The morphology, size, crystallinity, water uptake, and mechanical properties of the kombucha bacterial cellulose (KBC) network were studied. The results showed that KBC nanofibril diameters were ranging between 20–40 nm and the KBC was highly crystalline, >90%. The 3D network was lightweight and porous material, having a density of only 0.014 g/cm3. Furthermore, the compressed KBC network had very good mechanical properties, the E-modulus was 8 GPa, and the tensile strength was 172 MPa. The prepared nanocomposites with a KBC concentration of 8 wt.% were translucent with uniform structure confirmed with scanning electron microscopy study, and furthermore, the KBC network was homogeneously impregnated with the PMMA matrix. The mechanical testing of the nanocomposite showed high stiffness compared to the neat PMMA. A simple simulation of the tensile strength was used to understand the limited strain and strength given by the bacterial cellulose network. The excellent properties of the final material demonstrate the capability of a residue of kombucha fermentation as an excellent nanofiber template for use in polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract
Research and development of nanocellulose and nanocellulose-reinforced composite materials have garnered substantial interest in recent years. This is greatly attributed to its unique functionalities and properties, such as being renewable, sustainable, possessing high mechanical strengths, having low weight and cost. This review aims to highlight recent developments in incorporating nanocellulose into rubber matrices as a reinforcing filler material. It encompasses an introduction to natural and synthetic rubbers as a commodity at large and conventional fillers used today in rubber processing, such as carbon black and silica. Subsequently, different types of nanocellulose would be addressed, including its common sources, dimensions, and mechanical properties, followed by recent isolation techniques of nanocellulose from its resource and application in rubber reinforcement. The review also gathers recent studies and qualitative findings on the incorporation of a myriad of nanocellulose variants into various types of rubber matrices with the main goal of enhancing its mechanical integrity and potentially phasing out conventional rubber fillers. The mechanism of reinforcement and mechanical behaviors of these nanocomposites are highlighted. This article concludes with potential industrial applications of nanocellulose-reinforced rubber composites and the way forward with this technology.

Abstract
Bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are an essential group of compounds secreted by bacteria. These versatile EPSs are utilized individually or in combination with different materials for a broad range of biomedical field functions. The various applications can be explained by the vast number of derivatives with useful properties that can be controlled. This review offers insight on the current research trend of nine commonly used EPSs, their biosynthesis pathways, their characteristics, and the biomedical applications of these relevant bioproducts.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to provide an overview of recent findings related to bacterial cellulose application in bio-packaging industry. This constantly growing sector fulfils a major role by the maintenance of product safety and quality, protection against environmental impacts that affect the shelf life. Conventional petroleum-based plastic packaging are still rarely recyclable and have a number of harmful environmental effects. Herein, we discuss the most recent studies on potential good alternative to plastic packaging-bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), known as an ecological, safe, biodegradable, and chemically pure biopolymer. The limitations of this bio-based packaging material, including relatively poor mechanical properties or lack of antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, can be successfully overcome by its modification with a wide variety of bioactive and reinforcing compounds. BNC active and intelligent food packaging offer a new and innovative approach to extend the shelf life and maintain, improve, or monitor product quality and safety. Incorporation of different agents BNC matrices allows to obtain e.g., antioxidant-releasing films, moisture absorbers, antimicrobial membranes or pH, freshness and damage indicators, humidity, and other biosensors. However, further development and implementation of this kind of bio-packaging will highly depend on the final performance and cost-effectiveness for the industry and consumers.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a biopolymer of great significance to the medical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. However, a high concentration of carbon sources (mainly glucose) and other culture media components is usually required to promote a significant yield of BC, which increases the bioprocess cost. Thus, optimization strategies (conventional or statistical) have become relevant for the cost-effective production of bacterial cellulose. Additionally, this biopolymer may present new properties through modifications with exogenous compounds. The present review, explores and discusses recent studies (last five years) that report the optimization of BC production and its yield as well as in situ and ex situ modifications, resulting in improved mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of BC for new applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of a new Komagataeibacter xylinus strain in producing bacterial cellulose from glucose, mannitol and glycerol, and to assess the genome sequencing with special focus on bacterial cellulose related genes. RESULTS Bacterial cellulose production during 9 days of cultivation was tested in glucose, mannitol and glycerol, respectively. Differences in the bacterial cellulose kinetic formation was observed, with a final yield of 9.47 g/L in mannitol, 8.30 g/L in glycerol and 7.57 g/L in glucose, respectively. The draft genome sequencing of K1G4 was produced, revealing a genome of 3.09 Mbp. Two structurally completed cellulose synthase operons and a third copy of the catalytic subunit of cellulose synthase were found. By using phylogenetic analysis, on the entire rRNA operon sequence, K1G4 was found to be closely related to Komagataeibacter xylinus LMG 1515T and K. xylinus K2G30. CONCLUSIONS The different yields of bacterial cellulose produced on glucose, mannitol and glycerol can be correlated with the third copy of bcsAB operon harboured by K1G4, making it a versatile strain for industrial applications.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is ultrafine, nanofibrillar material with an exclusive combination of properties such as high crystallinity (84%-89%) and polymerization degree, high surface area (high aspect ratio of fibers with diameter 20-100 nm), high flexibility and tensile strength (Young modulus of 15-18 GPa), high water-holding capacity (over 100 times of its own weight), etc. Due to high purity, i.e., absence of lignin and hemicellulose, BC is considered as a non-cytotoxic, non-genotoxic and highly biocompatible material, attracting interest in diverse areas with hallmarks in medicine. The presented review summarizes the microbial aspects of BC production (bacterial strains, carbon sources and media) and versatile in situ and ex situ methods applied in BC modification, especially towards bionic design for applications in regenerative medicine, from wound healing and artificial skin, blood vessels, coverings in nerve surgery, dura mater prosthesis, arterial stent coating, cartilage and bone repair implants, etc. The paper concludes with challenges and perspectives in light of further translation in highly valuable medical products.

Abstract
The use of bacterial cellulose (BC) in food systems is still limited due to production costs. Nine clones belonging to Komagataeibacter hansenii, Komagataeibacter nataicola, Komagataeibacter rhaeticus, Komagataeibacter swingsii, and Komagataeibacter xylinus species were screened for cellulose productivity in growth tests with five different carbon sources and three nitrogen sources. The water-holding and rehydration capacities of the purified cellulose were determined. The structure of the polymer was investigated through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Natural mutants of K. rhaeticus LMG 22126T and K. swingsii LMG 22125T showed different productivity. The factors "bacterial isolate" and "nitrogen source" significantly affected the production of cellulose (p < 0.01) rather than the factor "carbon source" (p = 0.15). However, on average, the best conditions for increasing yield were found in medium containing glucose and peptone. Water-holding capacity (WHC) values ranged from 10.7 to 42.3 (g water/g cellulose) with significant differences among strains (p < 0.01), while the rehydration capacity varied from 4.2 to 9.3 (g water/g cellulose). A high crystallinity (64-80%) was detected in all samples with Iα fractions corresponding to 67-93%. The ATR-FT-IR spectra and the XRD patterns confirmed the expected structure. BC made by GVP isolate of K. rhaeticus LMG 22126T, which was the strain with the highest yield, was added to a gluten-free bread formulation. Results obtained from measurements of technological parameters in dough leavening and baking trials were promising for implementation in potential novel foods.
