Aggregation Controlled Charge Generation in Fullerene Based Bulk Heterojunction Polymer Solar Cells: Effect of Additive

Impact of packing arrangement on the optical properties of C60 cluster aggregates

The packing arrangement of organic π-conjugated molecules in a nanoscale material can have a strong impact on their optical properties. Here, using real-time-propagation time dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) calculations with the support of transition contribution maps, we study how modifications in the packing arrangement (cubic-like and chain-like aggregates composed of eight C60 molecules) and packing density (assembled at close distances with center-to-center inter-fullerene distances (d) varying from 9 Å to 11 Å) of C60 molecules affect the optical properties of cluster aggregates. The important conclusions drawn from this work are summarized as follows. For d = 9 Å, the charge transfer excitons produced by cubic and chain-like C60 cluster aggregates have highly different optical characteristics, as evidenced by the transition contribution maps. On the other hand, for d = 10 Å and 11 Å, both kinds of aggregates produce qualitatively similar optical features with the emergence of Wannier-like delocalized excitons having distinct degrees of localization and spatial distribution. The theoretical findings in this study elucidate the optical excitations in C60 cluster aggregates and could help in the design of more efficient organic devices.

Photophysical Properties of BODIPY Derivatives for the Implementation of Organic Solar Cells: A Computational Approach

Solar cells based on organic compounds are a proven emergent alternative to conventional electrical energy generation. Here, we provide a computational study of power conversion efficiency optimization of boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives by means of their associated open-circuit voltage, short-circuit density, and fill factor. In doing so, we compute for the derivatives' geometrical structures, energy levels of frontier molecular orbitals, absorption spectra, light collection efficiencies, and exciton binding energies via density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations. We fully characterize four D-π-A (BODIPY) molecular systems of high efficiency and improved J _sc that are well suited for integration into bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells as electron-donor materials in the active layer. Our results are twofold: we found that molecular complexes with a structural isoxazoline ring exhibit a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE), a useful result for improving the BHJ current, and, on the other hand, by considering the molecular systems as electron-acceptor materials, with P3HT as the electron donor in the active layer, we found a high PCE compound favorability with a pyrrolidine ring in its structure, in contrast to the molecular systems built with an isoxazoline ring. The theoretical characterization of the electronic properties of the BODIPY derivatives provided here, computed with a combination of ab initio methods and quantum models, can be readily applied to other sets of molecular complexes to hierarchize optimal power conversion efficiency.

Investigation of Dye Dopant Influence on Electrooptical and Morphology Properties of Polymeric Acceptor Matrix Dedicated for Ternary Organic Solar Cells

The publication presents the results of investigations of the influence of dye dopant on the electrooptical and morphology properties of a polymeric donor:acceptor mixture. Ternary thin films (polymer:dye:fullerene) were investigated for potential application as an active layer in organic solar cells. The aim of the research is to determine the effect of selected dye materials (dye D131, dye D149, dye D205, dye D358) on the three-component layer and their potential usefulness as an additional donor in ternary cells, based on P3HT donor and PC71BM acceptor. UV-vis spectroscopy studies were performed, and absorption and luminescence spectra were determined. Ellipsometry parameters for single dye and ternary layers have been measured. The analyses were performed using the Raman spectroscopy method, and the Raman spectra of the mixtures and single components have been determined. Organic layers were prepared and studied using scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. For dyes, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies were carried out and the ternary system was presented and analyzed in terms of energy bands.

Photophysical Properties of the PVK-MEH-PPV/PCBM Composite for Organic Solar Cells Application: Synthesis, Characterization and Computational Study

The physical and chemical properties of a new organic composite including PVK-MEH-PPV bi-block copolymer and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were recorded. The functionalization and the charge transfer that occurs between donor and acceptor were examined and computed. In fact, the stationary and time-resolved photoluminescence properties were used to examine the effect of the PCBM on the optical properties of the PVK-MEH-PPV matrix. The photoluminescence quenching accompanied by faster PL decay confirmed the charge transfer and interaction process. The electrical and optoelectronic properties and the charge carriers’ injection in the resulting composite were examined. The experimental conclusion was corroborated and confirmed by a calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Hence, the combination of experimental and theoretical results indicated that the result composite can be applied as an active layer for organic solar cells.
