A Review on Silver Nanoparticles: Classification, Various Methods of Synthesis, and Their Potential Roles in Biomedical Applications and Water Treatment

Design rules applied to silver nanoparticles synthesis: A practical example of machine learning application

The synthesis of silver nanoparticles with controlled physicochemical properties is essential for governing their intended functionalities and safety profiles. However, synthesis process involves multiple parameters that could influence the resulting properties. This challenge could be addressed with the development of predictive models that forecast endpoints based on key synthesis parameters. In this study, we manually extracted synthesis-related data from the literature and leveraged various machine learning algorithms. Data extraction included parameters such as reactant concentrations, experimental conditions, as well as physicochemical properties. The antibacterial efficiencies and toxicological profiles of the synthesized nanoparticles were also extracted. In a second step, based on data completeness, we employed regression algorithms to establish relationships between synthesis parameters and desired endpoints and to build predictive models. The models for core size and antibacterial efficiency were trained and validated using a cross-validation approach. Finally, the features' impact was evaluated via Shapley values to provide insights into the contribution of features to the predictions. Factors such as synthesis duration, scale of synthesis and the choice of capping agents emerged as the most significant predictors. This study demonstrated the potential of machine learning to aid in the rational design of synthesis process and paves the way for the safe-by-design principles development by providing insights into the optimization of the synthesis process to achieve the desired properties. Finally, this study provides a valuable dataset compiled from literature sources with significant time and effort from multiple researchers. Access to such datasets notably aids computational advances in the field of nanotechnology.

Toxic effect of mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to Ag-TiO2 and ZnTi2O4-TiO2 bicomponent nanoparticles

Nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in various fields, including antifouling paints for ships and industrial structures submerged in water. The potential impact of NPs on aquatic organisms, particularly their potential toxicity, is a significant concern, as their negative impact has been relatively poorly studied. In this study, we evaluated the effect of different concentrations of bimetallic Ag-TiO₂ and ZnTi₂O₄-TiO₂ NPs, which could potentially be used in antifouling coatings, on the hemocytes of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Hemocytes were exposed to NPs at concentrations of 0.1-1 mg/L for 1 and 2 h, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), levels of DNA damage, and number of dead cells were measured. Exposure to Ag-TiO₂ NPs at 1 mg/L concentration for 1 h suppressed ROS production in hemocytes and reduced the relative number of agranulocytes in cell suspensions, without inducing DNA damage or cell death. Exposure to ZnTi2O4-TiO2 NPs did not cause changes in the ratio of granulocytes to agranulocytes in suspensions, nor did it affect other functional parameters of hemocytes. However, after a 2 h exposure period, ZnTi2O4-TiO2 NPs (1 mg/L) significantly reduced the production of ROS by hemocytes. These findings suggest that Ag-TiO2 and ZnTi2O4-TiO2 NPs have low acute toxicity for marine bivalves.

Advancing biomedical applications: an in-depth analysis of silver nanoparticles in antimicrobial, anticancer, and wound healing roles

Introduction: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained significant attention in biomedical applications due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review focuses on the roles of AgNPs in antimicrobial activity, anticancer therapy, and wound healing, highlighting their potential to address critical health challenges. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using publications from the Scopus database, covering research from 2002 to 2024. The study included keyword frequency, citation patterns, and authorship networks. Data was curated with Zotero and analyzed using Bibliometrix R and VOSviewer for network visualizations. Results: The study revealed an increasing trend in research on AgNPs, particularly in antimicrobial applications, leading to 8,668 publications. Anticancer and wound healing applications followed, with significant contributions from India and China. The analysis showed a growing focus on "green synthesis" methods, highlighting a shift towards sustainable production. Key findings indicated the effectiveness of AgNPs in combating multidrug-resistant bacteria, inducing apoptosis in cancer cells, and promoting tissue regeneration in wound healing. Discussion: The widespread research and applications of AgNPs underscore their versatility in medical interventions. The study emphasizes the need for sustainable synthesis methods and highlights the potential risks, such as long-term toxicity and environmental impacts. Future research should focus on optimizing AgNP formulations for clinical use and further understanding their mechanisms of action. Conclusion: AgNPs play a pivotal role in modern medicine, particularly in addressing antimicrobial resistance, cancer treatment, and wound management. Ongoing research and international collaboration are crucial for advancing the safe and effective use of AgNPs in healthcare.

Revolutionizing Neurotherapeutics: Nanocarriers Unveiling the Potential of Phytochemicals in Alzheimer's Disease

Neurological disorders pose a huge worldwide challenge to the healthcare system, necessitating innovative strategies for targeted drug delivery to the central nervous system. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an untreatable neurodegenerative condition characterized by dementia and alterations in a patient's physiological and mental states. Since ancient times, medicinal plants have been an important source of bioactive phytochemicals with immense therapeutic potential. This review investigates new and safer alternatives for prevention and treatment of disease related to inevitable side effects associated with synthetic compounds. This review examines how nanotechnology can help in enhancing the delivery of neuroprotective phytochemicals in AD. Nevertheless, despite their remarkable neuroprotective properties, these natural products often have poor therapeutic efficacy due to low bioavailability, limited solubility and imperfect blood brain barrier (BBB) penetration. Nanotechnology produces personalized drug delivery systems which are necessary for solving such problems. In overcoming these challenges, nanotechnology might be employed as a way forward whereby customized medication delivery systems would be established as a result. The use of nanocarriers in the design and application of important phytochemicals is highlighted by this review, which indicate potential for revolutionizing neuroprotective drug delivery. We also explore the complications and possibilities of using nanocarriers to supply nutraceuticals and improve patients' standard of living, and preclinical as well as clinical investigations displaying that these techniques are effective in mitigating neurodegenerative diseases. In order to fight brain diseases and improve patient's health, scientists and doctors can employ nanotechnology with its possible therapeutic interventions.

Green-Synthesized Characterization, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Applications of CtAC/MNPs-Ag Nanocomposites

The emergence of antibiotic resistance, caused by the improper use of antibiotics, is a significant challenge in combating infectious diseases, leading to millions of annual fatalities. The occurrence of antimicrobial side effects catalyzes the investigation of novel antimicrobial compounds and sources of drugs. Consequently, the research on biological activity that is conducted on plants, plant extracts, and compounds that are produced from plant components is of utmost significance. In this study, CtAC/MNPs were obtained by the reaction of activated carbon (AC) obtained from the fruits of the Celtis tournefortii (Ct) plant and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and a CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposite was synthesized by the reduction in silver ions added to the reaction. The synthesized CtAC/MNPs and CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposites were analyzed spectroscopically (FTIR, XRD), microscopically (SEM, EDX), optically (DLS), electrochemically (zeta potential) and magnetically (VSM). The antibacterial activities of CtAC/MNPs and CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposites against S. aureus and E. coli were investigated by microdilution method using minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and disk diffusion methods. Antioxidant activity study, including total phenolic content and DPPH and cuprac assays, revealed the remarkable effect of the CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposite. This study has the advantages of obtaining CtAC/MNPs and CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposites in a short time without requiring energy, and most importantly, the reaction takes place without using any toxic substances. In addition, according to the data obtained in the study, the CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposite is thought to shed light on biomedical research.

Environmental factors modify silver nanoparticles ecotoxicity in Chydorus eurynotus (Cladocera)

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most produced nanomaterials in the world and are incorporated into several products due to their biocide and physicochemical properties. Since freshwater bodies are AgNPs main final sink, several consequences for biota are expected to occur. With the hypothesis that AgNPs can interact with environmental factors, we analyzed their ecotoxicity in combination with humic acids and algae. In addition to the specific AgNPs behavior in the media, we analyzed the mortality, growth, and phototactic behavior of Chydorus eurynotus (Cladocera) as response variables. While algae promoted Ag+ release, humic acids reduced it by adsorption, and their combination resulted in an intermediated Ag+ release. AgNPs affected C. eurynotus survival and growth, but algae and humic acids reduced AgNPs lethality, especially when combined. The humic acids mitigated AgNP effects in C. eurynotus growth, and both factors improved its phototactic behavior. It is essential to deepen the study of the isolated and combined influences of environmental factors on the ecotoxicity of nanoparticles to achieve accurate predictions under realistic exposure scenarios.

Tiny Green Army: Fighting Malaria with Plants and Nanotechnology

Malaria poses a global threat to human health, with millions of cases and thousands of deaths each year, mainly affecting developing countries in tropical and subtropical regions. Malaria's causative agent is Plasmodium species, generally transmitted in the hematophagous act of female Anopheles sp. mosquitoes. The main approaches to fighting malaria are eliminating the parasite through drug treatments and preventing transmission with vector control. However, vector and parasite resistance to current strategies set a challenge. In response to the loss of drug efficacy and the environmental impact of pesticides, the focus shifted to the search for biocompatible products that could be antimalarial. Plant derivatives have a millennial application in traditional medicine, including the treatment of malaria, and show toxic effects towards the parasite and the mosquito, aside from being accessible and affordable. Its disadvantage lies in the type of administration because green chemical compounds rapidly degrade. The nanoformulation of these compounds can improve bioavailability, solubility, and efficacy. Thus, the nanotechnology-based development of plant products represents a relevant tool in the fight against malaria. We aim to review the effects of nanoparticles synthesized with plant extracts on Anopheles and Plasmodium while outlining the nanotechnology green synthesis and current malaria prevention strategies.

A critical review on the recent trends of photocatalytic, antibacterial, antioxidant and nanohybrid applications of anatase and rutile TiO2 nanoparticles

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have become a focal point of research due to their widespread daily use and diverse synthesis methods, including physical, chemical, and environmentally sustainable approaches. These nanoparticles possess unique attributes such as size, shape, and surface functionality, making them particularly intriguing for applications in the biomedical field. The continuous exploration of TiO2 NPs is driven by the quest to enhance their multifunctionality, aiming to create next-generation products with superior performance. Recent research efforts have specifically focused on understanding the anatase and rutile phases of TiO2 NPs and evaluating their potential in various domains, including photocatalytic processes, antibacterial properties, antioxidant effects, and nanohybrid applications. The hypothesis guiding this research is that by exploring different synthesis methods, particularly chemical and environmentally friendly approaches, and incorporating doping and co-doping techniques, the properties of TiO2 NPs can be significantly improved for diverse applications. The study employs a comprehensive approach, investigating the effects of nanoparticle size, shape, dose, and exposure time on performance. The synthesis methods considered encompass both conventional chemical processes and environmentally friendly alternatives, with a focus on how doping and co-doping can enhance the properties of TiO2 NPs. Investigating the synthesis parameters of durian skin-based activated carbon and the effects of silver nanocatalysts on its recyclability in methylene blue removal

Activated carbon (AC) is the most common and economically viable adsorbent for eliminating toxic organic pollutants, particularly dyes, from wastewater. Its widespread adoption is due to the simplicity and affordable production of AC, wherein low-cost agricultural wastes, such as durian skin can be used. Converting durian skin into AC presents a promising solution for its solid waste management. However, inherent drawbacks such as its non-selectivity, relatively short lifespan and laborious replacement and recovery processes diminish the overall efficacy of AC as an adsorbent. To address these challenges, the immobilisation of metal nanocatalysts such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is one of the emerging solutions. AgNPs can facilitate the regeneration of the adsorption sites of AC by catalysing the conversion of the adsorbed dyes into harmless and simpler molecules. Nevertheless, the immobilisation of AgNPs on AC surface can be challenging as the pore size formation of AC is hard to control and the nanomaterials can easily leach out from the AC surface. Hence, in this study, we synthesised AC from durian skin (DS) and immobilised AgNPs on the AC-DS surface. Then, we used methylene blue (MB) removal for studying the adsorption capability and recyclability of the AC-DS. In the synthesis of AC-DS, the influences of reaction temperature, activating agent, and acid-washing to its capability in adsorptive removal of  MB in solution were first determined. It was found that 400 °C, KOH activating agent, and the presence of acid-washing (50% of HNO3) resulted in AC-DS with the highest percentage of MB removal (91.49 ± 2.86%). Then, the overall results from three recyclability experiments demonstrate that AC-DS with immobilised AgNPs exhibited higher MB removal after several cycles (up to 6 cycles) as compared to AC-DS alone, proving the benefit of AgNPs for the recyclability of AC-DS. We also found that AgNPs/Citrate@AC-DS exhibited better adsorption capability and recyclability as compared to AgNPs/PVP@AC-DS indicating significant influences of type of stabilisers in this study. This study also demonstrates that the presence of more oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups) after acid-washing on AC-DS and in citrate molecules, has greater influence to the performance of AC-DS and AgNPs/Citrate@AC-DS in the removal of MB as compared to the influences of their BET surface area and pore structure. The findings in this study have the potential to promote and serve as a guideline for harnessing the advantages of nanomaterials, such as AgNPs, to enhance the properties of AC for environmental applications.

Synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic activities of green sol-gel ZnO nanoparticles using Abelmoschus esculentus and Salvia officinalis: A comparative study versus co-precipitation-synthesized nanoparticles

Background

The development of green chemistry methods involving plant-based nanoparticle synthesis presents an affordable and eco-friendly approach for wastewater treatment and color removal. This study aimed to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles using the sol-gel method with Salvia officinalis and Abelmoschus esculentus plants, examining their photocatalytic efficiency for organic dye removal.

Methods

To compare the properties of ZnO nanoparticles, another type of ZnO-NPs was synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The characterization of synthesized nanoparticles was performed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA-DTG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Zeta potential (ZP), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV-Vis spectrophotometry.

Results

Based on XRD results, the average crystalline size of nanoparticles was calculated using the Debye-Scherer equation for synthesized nanoparticles using the S. officinalis at 22.99 nm and for the A. esculentus at 29.79 nm, and for the co-precipitation method at 18.83 nm. The FE-SEM images showed spherical ZnO nanoparticles. Photocatalytic properties of ZnO-NPs were investigated for remove of methylene blue organic dye in the presence of UV light. The pH 10 was identified as the best pH, which had the highest percentage of color degradation. All three types of nanoparticles were tested by up to 360 min to optimize the dyeing time. For A. esculentus, the highest percentage of color removal occurred in the first 90 min (41.0 %), for S. officinalis nanoparticles between 75 and 90 min (86.9 %), and for chemically synthesized nanoparticles between 30 and 45 min (100 %).

Conclusions

In conclusion, the best MB dye degradation capacity belonged to co-precipitation ZnO nanoparticles followed by S. officinalis and A. esculentus nanoparticles.

Desalination of seawater using integrated microbial biofilm/cellulose acetate membrane and silver NPs/activated carbon nanocomposite in a continuous mode

The main objective of the present study was to desalinate seawater using Bacillus cereus gravel biofilm and cellulose acetate (CA) membranes with and without silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a potent and safe disinfectant for the treated water. Six desalination trials (I, II, III, IV, V and VI) were performed using the proposed biofilm/cellulose membrane. Results confirmed that Bacillus cereus gravel biofilm (microbial desalination) is the optimal system for desalination of seawater. It could achieve 45.0% RE (initial salinity: 44,478 mg/L), after only 3 h compared to the other tested treatments. It could also achieve 42, 42, 57, 43 and 59% RE for TDS, EC, TSS, COD and BOD, respectively. To overcome the problem of the residual salinity and reach complete elimination of salt content for potential reuse, multiple units of the proposed biofilm can be used in sequence. As a general conclusion, the Bacillus cereus biofilm system can be considered as remarkably efficient, feasible, rapid, clean, renewable, durable, environmentally friendly and easily applied technology compared to the very costly and complicated common desalination technologies. Up to our knowledge, this is the first time microbial biofilm was developed and used as an effective system for seawater desalination.

Evaluation of Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized from Vegetable Waste

Introduction

Vegetable waste has numerous essential values and can be used for various purposes. Unfortunately, it is often discarded worldwide due to a lack of awareness regarding its nutritional and practical significance. Even the nutrient-rich peels of fruits and vegetables are commonly wasted, despite their numerous useful applications. Utilizing vegetable waste to produce silver nanoparticles through green synthesis is an advantageous, economical, and environmentally friendly method for producing valuable products while addressing waste management concerns. The main emphasis of this study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by using vegetable waste from Solanum tuberosum (potato) and Coriander sativum (coriander).

Methods

The stems of Coriander sativum and peels of Solanum tuberosum were used as extracts for the synthesis of AgNPs. The characterization of the synthesized AgNPs involved UV-spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The phytochemical analysis was performed to analyze antimicrobial, cytotoxic, antidiabetic, antitumor, antioxidant, alpha-amylase, and protein inhibition activities.

Results

The change in the color of the reaction mixture from yellowish green to brown following the addition of extracts to the silver nitrate solution confirmed nanoparticle synthesis. UV analysis has shown peaks in the range of 300-400nm. SEM confirmed the spherical and agglomerated morphology and size of 64nm for potato peel and 70nm for coriander stem. XRD confirmed the crystalline structure of silver nanoparticles. The phytochemical assays confirmed that silver nanoparticles had higher total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles showed promising antimicrobial, cytotoxic, antidiabetic, antitumor, and antioxidant properties and significant alpha-amylase and protein inhibition activities in comparison with the crude extracts.

Conclusion

The bioactivity of the plant suggests that it could be a suitable option for therapeutic purposes. This study demonstrates a potential method for sustainable nanoparticle synthesis and the therapeutic applications of AgNPs derived from vegetable waste. By utilizing the potential of vegetable waste, we can contribute to both environmental sustainability and the development of innovative, valuable products in fields such as medicine, agriculture, and materials science. These findings encourage further research on agricultural byproducts, promoting environmentally friendly and economically advantageous research and development efforts.

Enhanced antibacterial properties and magnetic removal of Fe3O4/fenugreek seed gum/silver nanocomposites for water treatment

This study reports the synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial activity of a novel Fe3O4 nanocomposite coated with fenugreek seed gums and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). To enhance the antibacterial properties of AgNPs and overcome the limitations of conventional methods for the production of three-component nanocomposites, a layer of natural polymer was used. Fenugreek seed gums (FSG) were used to coat Fe3O4 NPs to prevent their decomposition and to facilitate the release of silver nanoparticles in aqueous media. The Fe3O4/FSG/Ag nanocomposites were characterized and then the antibacterial activity of the nanocomposites was evaluated against two gram-negative and two gram-positive bacteria and compared with Fe3O4, Fe3O4/FSG, FSG, and AgNO3. The results showed that the Fe3O4/FSG/Ag nanocomposites had higher antibacterial activity than the other samples and could be easily removed from treated water by a powerful magnet without causing pollution in the environment. Overall, these findings suggest that the Fe3O4/FSG/Ag nanocomposites have potential applications in water treatment for their improved antibacterial properties and ease of removal.

Effect of Peptides on the Synthesis, Properties and Wound Healing Capacity of Silver Nanoparticles

The aim of this study is the synthesis of novel peptide-silver nanoparticle conjugates with enhanced wound healing capacity. Peptide-silver nanoparticle conjugates were synthesized using myristoyl tetrapeptide 6 (MT6) or copper tripeptide 1 (CuTP1). Peptide-free silver nanoparticles (AgNP) were synthesized using NaBH4 and sodium citrate and were used as control. The addition of the peptides during or after the synthesis of nanoparticles and its impact on the properties of the synthesized peptide-silver nanoparticle conjugates were assessed. The monitoring of the synthesis of nanoparticles was achieved using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-/Vis). The characteristics and colloidal stability of the nanoparticles (size and ζ-potential distribution, morphology, composition and structure) were monitored using dynamic laser scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The wound healing capacity of the peptide-silver nanoparticle conjugates was assessed using scratch test assay on fibroblasts (NIH/3T3). The results indicated that the addition of the peptides during the synthesis of nanoparticles lead to better yield of the reaction and more effective capping while the size distribution and ζ-potential of the conjugates indicated long-term colloidal stability. The MT6-AgNP conjugate exhibited 71.97 ± 4.35% wound closure, which was about 5.48-fold higher (p < 0.05) than the corresponding free MT6. The CuTP1-AgNP conjugate exhibited 62.37 ± 18.33% wound closure that was better by 2.82 fold (p < 0.05) compared to the corresponding free CuTP1. Both peptides led to the synthesis of silver nanoparticle conjugates with enhanced wound healing capacity compared to the respective free peptide or to the peptide-free AgNP (29.53 ± 4.71% wound closure, p < 0.05). Our findings demonstrated that the synthetized peptide-silver nanoparticle conjugates are promising ingredients for wound care formulation.

Ag Nanocluster Production through DC Magnetron Sputtering and Inert Gas Condensation: A Study of Structural, Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy, and Optical Properties

Silver nanoclusters are valuable for a variety of applications. A combination of direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering and inert gas condensation methods, employed within an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system, was used to generate Ag nanoclusters with an average size of 4 nm. Various analytical techniques, including Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM), UV-visible absorption, and Photoluminescence, were employed to characterize the produced Ag nanoclusters. AFM topographic imaging revealed spherical nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 3 to 6 nm, corroborating data from a quadrupole mass filter (QMF). The XRD analysis verified the simple cubic structure of the Ag nanoclusters. The surface potential was assessed using KPFM, from which the work function was calculated with a reference highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The UV-visible absorption spectra displayed peaks within the 350-750 nm wavelength range, with a strong absorption feature at 475 nm. Additionally, lower excitation wavelengths resulted in a sharp peak emission at 370 nm, which became weaker and broader when higher excitation wavelengths were used.

Adverse Effect of Metallic Gold and Silver Nanoparticles on Xenopus laevis Embryogenesis

Exposure to metal nanoparticles is potentially harmful, particularly when occurring during embryogenesis. In this study, we tested the effects of commercial AuNPs and AgNPs, widely used in many fields for their features, on the early development of Xenopus laevis, an anuran amphibian key model species in toxicity testing. Through the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus test (FETAX), we ascertained that both nanoparticles did not influence the survival rate but induced morphological anomalies like modifications of head and branchial arch cartilages, depigmentation of the dorsal area, damage to the intestinal brush border, and heart rate alteration. The expression of genes involved in the early pathways of embryo development was also modified. This study suggests that both types of nanoparticles are toxic though nonlethal, thus indicating that their use requires attention and further study to better clarify their activity in animals and, more importantly, in humans.

Biosynthesis of Functional Silver Nanoparticles Using Callus and Hairy Root Cultures of Aristolochia manshuriensis

This study delves into the novel utilization of Aristolochia manshuriensis cultured cells for extracellular silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesis without the need for additional substances. The presence of elemental silver has been verified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, while distinct surface plasmon resonance peaks were revealed by UV-Vis spectra. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the AgNPs, ranging in size from 10 to 40 nm, exhibited a spherical morphology. Fourier-transform infrared analysis validated the abilty of A. manshuriensis extract components to serve as both reducing and capping agents for metal ions. In the context of cytotoxicity on embryonic fibroblast (NIH 3T3) and mouse neuroblastoma (N2A) cells, AgNPs demonstrated varying effects. Specifically, nanoparticles derived from callus cultures exhibited an IC50 of 2.8 µg/mL, effectively inhibiting N2A growth, whereas AgNPs sourced from hairy roots only achieved this only at concentrations of 50 µg/mL and above. Notably, all studied AgNPs' treatment-induced cytotoxicity in fibroblast cells, yielding IC50 values ranging from 7.2 to 36.3 µg/mL. Furthermore, the findings unveiled the efficacy of the synthesized AgNPs against pathogenic microorganisms impacting both plants and animals, including Agrobacterium rhizogenes, A. tumefaciens, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli. These findings underscore the effectiveness of biotechnological methodologies in offering advanced and enhanced green nanotechnology alternatives for generating nanoparticles with applications in combating cancer and infectious disorders.

Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles for Targeted Cancer Therapy and Enhancing Photodynamic Therapy

Different conventional therapeutic procedures are utilized globally to manage cancer cases, yet the mortality rate in patients with cancer remains considerably high. Developments in the field of nanotechnology have included novel therapeutic strategies to deal with cancer. Biogenic (green) metallic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) obtained using plant-mediated protocols are attractive to researchers exploring cancer treatment. Biogenic AgNPs present advantages, since they are cost-effective, easy to obtain, energy efficient, and less toxic compared to chemically and physically obtained AgNPs. Also, they present excellent anticancer abilities thanks to their unique sizes, shapes, and optical properties. This review provides recent advancements in exploring biogenic AgNPs as a drug or agent for cancer treatment. Thus, great attention was paid to the anticancer efficacy of biogenic AgNPs, their anticancer mechanisms, their efficacy in cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT), their efficacy in targeted cancer therapy, and their toxicity.

Effects of the Donor Unit on the Formation of Hybrid Layers of Donor-Acceptor Copolymers with Silver Nanoparticles

Donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers containing perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxydiimide (PDI) electron-acceptor (A) units belonging to n-type semiconductors are of interest due to their many potential applications in photonics, particularly for electron-transporting layers in all-polymeric or perovskite solar cells. Combining D-A copolymers and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) can further improve material properties and device performances. Hybrid layers of D-A copolymers containing PDI units and different electron-donor (D) units (9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole or 9,9-dioctylfluorene) with Ag-NPs were prepared electrochemically during the reduction of pristine copolymer layers. The formation of hybrid layers with Ag-NP coverage was monitored by in-situ measurement of absorption spectra. The Ag-NP coverage of up to 41% was higher in hybrid layers made of copolymer with 9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole D units than in those made of copolymer with 9,9-dioctylfluorene D units. The pristine and hybrid copolymer layers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which proved the formation of hybrid layers with stable Ag-NPs in the metallic state with average diameters <70 nm. The influence of D units on Ag-NP diameters and coverage was revealed.

Nanofabrication synthesis and its role in antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant activities of AgNPs synthesized by Mangifera indica bark extract

The bio-based nanoparticles synthesis and assessment of their potential biomedical applications related research is rapidly emerging. The ability of an aqueous ethanolic bark extract of Mangifera indica to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as well as its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities were investigated in this study. Interestingly, the bark extract effectively synthesized the AgNPs, including an absorbance peak at 412 nm and sizes ranging from 56 to 89 nm. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed that the presence of most essential functional groups belongs to the most bioactive compounds. Synthesized AgNPs showed fine antibacterial activity against the Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) causing bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus at 50 μg mL^-1 concentrations. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of AgNPs against these pathogens were found as 12.5 ± 0.8 & 13 ± 0.6, 13.6 ± 0.5 & 14 ± 0.7, 11.5 ± 0.3 & 11.5 ± 0.4, 13 ± 0.8 & 13 ± 0.7, and 11.8 ± 0.4 & 12 ± 0.8 μg mL^-1 respectively. Interestingly, this AgNPs also possesses outstanding anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities as studied against the egg albumin denaturation (85%) inhibition and MCF 7 (Michigan Cancer Foundation-7: breast cancer cells) cell line (cytotoxicity: 80.1%) at 50 μg mL^-1 concentration. Similarly at 50 μg mL^-1 concentration showed 75% of DPPH radical scavenging potential. These activities were dose dependent, and the findings suggest that the M. indica bark aqueous ethanolic extract synthesized AgNPs can be used as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer agents after in-vivo testing.

Role of Honey as a Bifunctional Reducing and Capping/Stabilizing Agent: Application for Silver and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles

The use of natural reducing and capping agents has gained importance as a way to synthesize nanoparticles (NPs) in an environmentally sustainable manner. Increasing numbers of studies have been published on the green synthesis of NPs using natural sources such as bacteria, fungi, and plants. In recent years, the use of honey in the synthesis of metal and metal oxide NPs has become a new and promising area of research. Honey acts as both a stabilizing and reducing agent in the NP synthesis process and serves as a precursor. This review focuses on the use of honey in the synthesis of silver NPs (Ag-NPs) and zinc oxide NPs (ZnO-NPs), emphasizing its role as a reducing and capping agent. Additionally, a comprehensive examination of the bio-based reducing and capping/stabilizing agents used in the honey-mediated biosynthesis mechanism is provided. Finally, the review looks forward to environmentally friendly methods for NP synthesis.

Exploring Possible Ways to Enhance the Potential and Use of Natural Products through Nanotechnology in the Battle against Biofilms of Foodborne Bacterial Pathogens

Biofilms enable pathogenic bacteria to survive in unfavorable environments. As biofilm-forming pathogens can cause rapid food spoilage and recurrent infections in humans, especially their presence in the food industry is problematic. Using chemical disinfectants in the food industry to prevent biofilm formation raises serious health concerns. Further, the ability of biofilm-forming bacterial pathogens to tolerate disinfection procedures questions the traditional treatment methods. Thus, there is a dire need for alternative treatment options targeting bacterial pathogens, especially biofilms. As clean-label products without carcinogenic and hazardous potential, natural compounds with growth and biofilm-inhibiting and biofilm-eradicating potentials have gained popularity as natural preservatives in the food industry. However, the use of these natural preservatives in the food industry is restricted by their poor availability, stability during food processing and storage. Also there is a lack of standardization, and unattractive organoleptic qualities. Nanotechnology is one way to get around these limitations and as well as the use of underutilized bioactives. The use of nanotechnology has several advantages including traversing the biofilm matrix, targeted drug delivery, controlled release, and enhanced bioavailability, bioactivity, and stability. The nanoparticles used in fabricating or encapsulating natural products are considered as an appealing antibiofilm strategy since the nanoparticles enhance the activity of the natural products against biofilms of foodborne bacterial pathogens. Hence, this literature review is intended to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current methods in nanotechnology used for natural products delivery (biofabrication, encapsulation, and nanoemulsion) and also discuss the different promising strategies employed in the recent and past to enhance the inhibition and eradication of foodborne bacterial biofilms.

Ecotoxicity of nanosilver on cladocerans and the role of algae provision

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are applied in diverse industries due to their biocide and physicochemical properties; therefore, they can be released into aquatic systems, interact with environmental factors, and ultimately exert adverse effects on the biota. We analyzed AgNPs effects on Ceriodaphnia reticulata (Cladocera) through mortality and life-history traits, considering the influence of food (Tetradesmus obliquus, Chlorophyceae) presence and concentration. C. reticulata was exposed to AgNPs in acute (absence and two algae concentrations plus five AgNPs treatments) and chronic assays (two algae concentrations plus three AgNPs treatments). AgNPs did not affect algae flocculation but increased Ag⁺ release, being these ions less toxic than AgNPs (as proved by the exposure to AgNO₃). A reduction in AgNPs acute toxicity was observed when algae concentration increased. Acute AgNP exposure decreased C. reticulata body size and heart rate. The chronic AgNP exposure reduced C. reticulata molt number, growth, heart rate, and neonate size:number ratio, being these effects mitigated at the highest algae concentration. Increases in relative size and number of neonates were observed in AgNP treatments suggesting energy trade off. The increased Ag⁺ release with food presence suggests that the AgNP-algae interaction might be responsible of the decreased toxicity. Although algae reduced AgNP toxicity, they still exerted adverse effects on C. reticulata below predicted environmental concentrations. Since algae presence reduces AgNP effects but increases Ag⁺ release, studies should be continued to provide evidence on their toxicity to other organisms.

Activities against Lung Cancer of Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles: A Review

Nanomedicine is an interdisciplinary field where nanostructured objects are applied to treat or diagnose disease. Nanoparticles (NPs) are a special class of materials at nanometric scale that can be prepared from lipids, polymers, or noble metals through bottom-up approaches. Biological synthesis is a reliable, sustainable, and non-toxic bottom-up method that uses phytochemicals, microorganisms, and enzymes to induce the reduction of metal ions into NPs. Silver (Ag) NPs exhibit potent therapeutic properties that can be exploited to overcome the limitations of current treatment modalities for human health issues such as lung cancer (LC). Here, we review the preparation of AgNPs using biological synthesis and their application against LC using in vitro and in vivo models. An overview of the staging, diagnosis, genetic mutations, and treatment of LC, as well as its main subtypes, is presented. A summary of the reaction mechanisms of AgNPs using microbial cell cultures, plant extracts, phytochemicals, and amino acids is included. The use of capping agents in the biosynthesis of AgNPs with anticancer activity is also detailed. The history and biological activities of metal-based nanostructures synthesized with gold, copper, palladium, and platinum are considered. The possible anticancer mechanisms of AgNPs against LC models are covered. Our perspective about the future of AgNPs in LC treatment and nanomedicine is added.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Coffea canephora fruit skin extract and its application for mercury detection in face cream samples

Mercury is one of the most toxic heavy metals causing harmful effects on the human body; meanwhile, mercury is found in some face cream products to give a whitening effect. The upper limit concentration of mercury in skin-lightening products defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is under one mg/L as Hg²⁺. A new green analytical spectrophotometric method for mercury analysis has been developed by employing a biological reagent from fruit skin extract of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) as a bioreductor for silver ions as well as a stabilizer for the AgNPs product. The detection principle of this method is based on the decrease of the color intensity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) after the addition of Hg²⁺ ions due to the re-oxidization of the AgNPs by Hg²⁺ ions to colorless Ag⁺ ions. To achieve the most significant sensitivity, linearity of measurement, and validity, the method was optimized toward the volume of AgNPs and reaction time. In this research, the synthesized AgNPs were also characterized by UV-Vis Spectrometry as well as a particle size analyzer (PSA) to determine the size of nanoparticles. The result showed that the optimum conditions were attained at 4 mL AgNPs solution and 3-min reaction resulting in a linear measurement of Hg²⁺ in the range of 0-15 mg/L with LOD and LOQ of 0.039 and 0.130 mg/L, respectively. This method is quite selective and has been validated by applying it to real face cream samples with satisfactory results supported by average recoveries of close to 100%.

Preparation of Novel Nanoformulation to Enhance Efficacy in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease

Despite many efforts over the last few decades, cardiac-based drug delivery systems are experiencing major problems, such as the effective delivery of the precise amount of a drug. In the current study, an effort has been made to prepare a nano-herbformulation (NHF) to overcome the major problem of conventional intervention. Copper oxide-based NHF was prepared using plant extract of Alternanthera sessilis and characterized using physicochemical techniques such as Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). TEM analysis revealed that spherical NHF obtained of size 20-50 nm. In addition, XRD and FTIR confirmed the presence of phytochemicals with biological properties over the surface of copper oxide-based NHF. It was demonstrated that dose-dependent antiapoptotic activity was shown against DOX-induced cardiomyocytes, where ROS levels were significantly reduced to 0.29% from 37.99%. The results of the flow cytometry analysis using PI and Annexin staining further confirmed the antiapoptotic activity of NHF against DOX-induced cardiomyocytes by ROS scavenging. Thus, NHF might be used for cardiovascular disease treatment.

Antibacterial Activity of Metallic Nanoparticles against Multidrug-Resistant Pathogens Isolated from Environmental Samples: Nanoparticles/Antibiotic Combination Therapy and Cytotoxicity Study

Multidrug-resistant organisms have increased the prevalence of infectious diseases and have become the leading source of death globally. The adverse effects associated with conventional antibiotics cannot be underestimated, and as a result, the quest for antibacterial agents has received great attention over the years. Therefore, the current research was designed to synthesize and examine the antibacterial properties of two metallic nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), as well as their antibiotic combination therapy against multidrug-resistant bacteria. AgNPs and ZnONPs were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and characterized. Thereafter, their antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria was investigated using the microdilution technique. Subsequently, the interactions between the synthesized nanoparticles and antibiotics were evaluated by checkerboard assay. Time-kill assays were carried out to assess bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects, and the cytotoxicity study was carried out by MTT assay. The SEM analysis of AgNPs and ZnONPs were spherical with an average size of 21.03 and 43.37 nm, respectively. FTIR analysis showed the characteristics of the metal-oxygen vibrational band for both materials around 450 cm-1, which indicated the successful synthesis of these antibacterial agents. The EDX characterization revealed Zn and O with 77.89% and 18.24% abundance in ZnONPs and Ag with 95.65% abundance in AgNPs. UV-vis absorption spectra of AgNPs was obtained around 400 nm. ZnONPs showed a moderate antibacterial effect against Enterococcus species with a MIC range of 2.5-5 mg/mL, while AgNPs demonstrated a strong antibacterial effect against the tested bacterial strains with a MIC range of 0.078-0.039 mg/mL. The ZnONPs were found to be cytotoxic against Vero cell lines at the tested concentrations, whereas AgNPs had no cytotoxic effect at lower concentrations. Their combination activities showed synergetic and additive effects. These findings revealed that these synthesized materials could serve as alternate antibacterial agents against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumanni and Enterococcus species.

Effect of Bacterial Cellulose Plasma Treatment on the Biological Activity of Ag Nanoparticles Deposited Using Magnetron Deposition

New functional medical materials with antibacterial activity based on biocompatible bacterial cellulose (BC) and Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were obtained. Bacterial cellulose films were prepared by stationary liquid-phase cultivation of the Gluconacetobacter hansenii strain GH-1/2008 in Hestrin-Schramm medium with glucose as a carbon source. To functionalize the surface and immobilize Ag NPs deposited by magnetron sputtering, BC films were treated with low-pressure oxygen-nitrogen plasma. The composition and structure of the nanomaterials were studied using transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Using electron microscopy, it was shown that on the surface of the fibrils that make up the network of bacterial cellulose, Ag particles are stabilized in the form of aggregates 5-35 nm in size. The XPS C 1s spectra show that after the deposition of Ag NPs, the relative intensities of the C-OH and O-C-O bonds are significantly reduced. This may indicate the destruction of BC oxypyran rings and the oxidation of alcohol groups. In the Ag 3d_5/2 spectrum, two states at 368.4 and 369.7 eV with relative intensities of 0.86 and 0.14 are distinguished, which are assigned to Ag⁰ state and Ag acetate, respectively. Nanocomposites based on plasma-treated BC and Ag nanoparticles deposited by magnetron sputtering (BCP-Ag) exhibited antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger, S. aureus and Bacillus subtilis.

Preparation of Alumina Nanoparticles and Coating with Polyvinylpyrrolidone to Treat Cadmium Contamination of Water

Alumina nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method, where the obtained nanosize was 35 nm, and the nanomaterial was coated with PVP polymer, where the nanomaterial was dispersed by ultrasonic waves for half an hour, and then, the polymer was added, and under high magnetic stirring for 24 hours, it was dried at a temperature of 60°C for 24 hours. Cadmium salt solutions were prepared with different concentrations of 10, 30, and 60 ppm, and the nanomaterial was immersed in the prepared solutions at different times of 10, 30, and 60 minutes, and the measurement was done by an atomic absorption device. By means of the electronic scanner, a difference appeared in the nanosize, and this indicates that the packaging has completely occurred.

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Spent Coffee Ground Extracts: Process Modelling and Optimization

Large amounts of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) are produced annually worldwide. SCGs contain high levels of phenolics and other bioactive compounds that make them a potential source of reducing and stabilizing agents for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles. This study investigates the use of SCG extracts as a green strategy to produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). SCG extracts were obtained using aqueous ethanol as the solvent and then contacted with a silver nitrate solution under the selected conditions. A central composite design coupled with response surface methodology was used to evaluate the effects of solvent composition (C = 30–70% v/v), silver-to-phenolic ratio (R = 3–7 mol/mol), temperature (T = 25–55 °C) and pH (10–12) on the production of AgNPs. Characterization of AgNPs by DLS, TEM and XRD techniques showed that they were highly crystalline with a narrow size distribution. Under optimal reaction conditions, AgNPs with an average size of about 10 nm and a zeta potential of −30.5 to −20.7 mV were obtained. Overall, the results of this study indicate that SCGs are a promising material for the green synthesis of small-sized and stable AgNPs.

Selective Removal of the Emerging Dye Basic Blue 3 via Molecularly Imprinting Technique

A molecularly imprinting polymer (MIP) was synthesized for Basic Blue 3 dye and applied to wastewater for the adsorption of a target template. The MIPs were synthesized by bulk polymerization using methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). Basic Blue 3 dye (BB-3), 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and methanol were used as a functional monomer, cross linker, template, initiator and porogenic solvent, respectively, while non-imprinting polymers (NIP) were synthesized by the same procedure but without template molecules. The contact time was 25 min for the adsorption of BB-3 dye from 10 mL of spiked solution using 25 mg polymer. The adsorption of dye (BB-3) on the MIP followed the pseudo-second order kinetic (k₂ = 0.0079 mg·g⁻¹·min⁻¹), and it was according to the Langmuir isotherm, with maximum adsorption capacities of 78.13, 85.4 and 99.0 mg·g⁻¹ of the MIP at 283 K, 298 K and 313 K, respectively and 7 mg·g⁻¹ for the NIP. The negative values of ΔG° indicate that the removal of dye by the molecularly imprinting polymer and non-imprinting polymer is spontaneous, and the positive values of ΔH° and ΔS° indicate that the process is endothermic and occurred with the increase of randomness. The selectivity of the MIP for BB-3 dye was investigated in the presence of structurally similar as well as different dyes, but the MIP showed higher selectivity than the NIP. The imprinted polymer showed 96% rebinding capacity at 313 K towards the template, and the calculated imprinted factor and Kd value were 10.73 and 2.62, respectively. In this work, the MIP showed a greater potential of selectivity for the template from wastewater relative to the closely similar compounds.

The Potential Application of Green-Synthesized Metal Nanoparticles in Dentistry: A Comprehensive Review

Orodental problems have long been managed using herbal medicine. The development of nanoparticle formulations with herbal medicine has now become a breakthrough in dentistry because the synthesis of biogenic metal nanoparticles (MNPs) using plant extracts can address the drawbacks of herbal treatments. Green production of MNPs such as Ag, Au, and Fe nanoparticles enhanced by plant extracts has been proven to be beneficial in managing numerous orodental disorders, even outperforming traditional materials. Nanostructures are utilized in dental advances and diagnostics. Oral disease prevention medicines, prostheses, and tooth implantation all employ nanoparticles. Nanomaterials can also deliver oral fluid or pharmaceuticals, treating oral cancers and providing a high level of oral healthcare. These are also found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and other dental care products. However, there is a lack of understanding about the safety of nanomaterials, necessitating additional study. Many problems, including medication resistance, might be addressed using nanoparticles produced by green synthesis. This study reviews the green synthesis of MNPs applied in dentistry in recent studies (2010–2021).

Phytosynthesis of silver nanoparticles from Jatropha integerrima Jacq. flower extract and their possible applications as antibacterial and antioxidant agent

Jatropha integerrima Jacq. flower extract was used for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in the current study. Various spectroscopic analyses were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles (JIF-AgNPs). The antibacterial efficacy of JIF-AgNPs was studied by well diffusion and microdilution techniques. In addition, the impact of JIF-AgNPs on free radicals was evaluated. On the ultraviolet–visible spectrum, the nanoparticles exhibit the highest absorbance at 422 nm. Based on the Fourier transform infrared spectrum, phenols and amino acids were involved in capping the JIF-AgNPs. Crystalline sphere-shaped nanoparticles with an average size of 50.07 nm and zeta potential of −19.0 mV were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering analysis respectively. The JIF-AgNPs exhibit the highest and lowest growth inhibitory activity towards E. coli and B. subtilis. The minimal inhibitory concentration of JIF-AgNPs against E. coli, K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, and B. subtilis were 2.5, 5.0, 5.0, and 7.5 μg/mL, respectively. The JIF-AgNPs exhibited significant radical scavenging activities against DPPH (IC₅₀-32.5 ± 0.06 µg/mL), hydroxyl (IC₅₀-25 ± 0.09 µg/mL), Superoxide (IC₅₀-42.5 ± 0.13 µg/mL), and ABTs (IC₅₀-33.5 ± 0.15 µg/mL). Thus, synthesized nanoparticles were a good alternative to develop an antibacterial and antioxidant agent.

Preparing Copper Nanoparticles and Flexible Copper Conductive Sheets

Nanotechnology is used in a wide range of fields, including medicine, cosmetics, and new material development, and is one of the most popular technologies in the field of flexible electronic products. For the present work, the chemical reduction method with environmentally friendly reducing agents was used to synthesize copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) with good dispersibility. The CuNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis). After the CuNPs were formed, the solvent, polymers, and additives were added to form copper ink. Finally, the prepared copper inks were applied to flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate under low sintering temperature and the effects of sintering time and different concentrations of sintering agent on resistivity were investigated. The results show that the copper nanoparticles synthesized by secondary reduction were smaller, more uniform, and better dispersed than those formed by primary reduction. Ethylene glycol has reducing effects under high temperatures; therefore, the CuNPs formed using the mixed solvent were small and well dispersed. The copper ink was applied on the PET substrate, treated with a formic acid aqueous solution, and sintered at 130 °C for 60 min, and its resistivity was about 1.67 × 10-3 Ω cm. The proposed synthesizing method is expected to have potential applications in the flexible electronic products field.

Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles Using Tridax Procumbens for Topical Application: Excision Wound Model and Histopathological Studies

The objective of this study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles from the leaves of Tridax procumbens and develop its topical gels using chitosan to investigate the wound healing efficacy concomitant with the histopathological study. Green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by reacting silver nitrate (0.3 M) with leaf extract and characterized by particle analysis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, and TGA. The results revealed formed AgNPs were nano-sized (138 ± 2.1 nm), monodispersed (PDI: 0.460 ± 0.3), inter-particle repulsion (zeta: −20.4 ± 5.20 mV), stabilized, crystalline and, spherical with size ranging from 80–100 nm as per SEM micro photos. The BET analysis of AgNPs presents the surface area (12.861 m²/g), pore volume (0.037 cc/g), and pore radius (24.50 nm).TGA results show a loss of 13.39% up to 300 °C. The topical formulation was developed by loading AgNPs in chitosan-based gels, evaluated by pH, thermal cycling, centrifugal, and spreadability tests. AgNPs chitosan gels results showed skin compatibility, higher stability, and spreading ability. The maximum antibacterial zone of inhibition was found to be 25 ± 0.98 mm for bacillus subtitles and 30 ± 1.99 mm for Klebsiella pneumoniae, respectively. Nanosilver-containing gel also showed excellent compatibility with erythrocytes. Excision wound model was used to assess the wound healing property of the developed AgNP gels, the results of which indicated a significantly progressive healing process in test-group of animals treated with chitosan-based gels containing AgNPs. A histopathological study further confirmed the almost normal skin structure of treated animal tissue compared to standard and negative control. Thus, green synthesized AgNPs loaded chitosan-based topical gel can potentially be used for wound healing application.
