Abstract
Limited alliinase resources cause difficulties in the biosynthesis of thiosulfinates (e.g., allicin), restricting their applications in the agricultural and food industries. To effectively biosynthesize thiosulfinates, this study aimed to excavate bacterial alliinase resources and elucidate their catalytic properties. Two bacterial cystathionine β-lyases (MetCs) possessing high alliinase activity (>60 U mg -1) toward L-(-)-alliin were identified from Allium sativum rhizosphere isolates. Metagenomic exploration revealed that cystathionine β-lyase from Bacillus cereus (BcPatB) possessed high activity toward both L-(±)-alliin and L-(+)-alliin (208.6 and 225.1 U mg -1), respectively. Although these enzymes all preferred l-cysteine S-conjugate sulfoxides as substrates, BcPatB had a closer phylogenetic relationship with Allium alliinases and shared several similar features with A. sativum alliinase. Interestingly, the Trp30Ile31Ala32Asp33 Met34 motif in a cuspate loop of BcPatB, especially sites 31 and 32 at the top of the motif, was modeled to locate near the sulfoxide of L-(+)-alliin and is important for substrate stereospecificity. Moreover, the stereoselectivity and activity of mutants I31V and A32G were higher toward L-(+)-alliin than those of mutant I31L/D33E toward L-(-)-alliin. Using bacterial alliinases and chemically synthesized substrates, we obtained thiosulfinates with high antimicrobial and antinematode activities that could provide insights into the protection of crops and food.

Abstract
Allicin is a thiosulphate molecule produced in garlic (Allium sativum) and has a wide range of biological actions and pharmaceutical applications. Its precursor molecule is the non-proteinogenic amino acid alliin (S-allylcysteine sulphoxide). The alliin biosynthetic pathway in garlic involves a group of enzymes, members of which are the γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase isoenzymes, Allium sativum γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase AsGGT1, AsGGT2 and AsGGT3, which catalyze the removal of the γ-glutamyl group from γ-glutamyl-S-allyl-L-cysteine to produce S-allyl-L-cysteine. This removal is followed by an S-oxygenation, which leads to the biosynthesis of alliin. The aim of the present study is to annotate previously discovered genes of garlic γ-glutamyl-transpeptidases, as well as a fourth candidate gene (AsGGT4) that has yet not been described. The annotation includes identifying the loci of the genes in the garlic genome, revealing the overall structure and conserved regions of these genes, and elucidating the evolutionary history of these enzymes through their phylogenetic analysis. The genomic structure of γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase genes is conserved; each gene consists of seven exons, and these genes are located on different chromosomes. AsGGT3 and AsGGT4 enzymes contain a signal peptide. To that end, the AsGGT3 protein sequence was corrected; four indel events occurring in AsGGT3 coding regions suggested that at least in the garlic variety Ershuizao, AsGGT3 may be a pseudogene. Finally, the use of protein structure prediction tools allowed the visualization of the tertiary structure of the candidate peptide.

Abstract
Considerable efforts have been made by modern aquaculture to mitigate the environmental damages caused by its practices while also attempting to improve the quality of the aquatic organisms by promoting alternatives, such as the use of natural products, like garlic (Allium sativum), and instead of chemical agents. Garlic has multiple properties, including antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antitoxic, and anticancer effects. In fish, the antiparasitic activity of garlic is one of the most reported effects in the literature, mainly using immersion baths for aquatic organisms. Using garlic also has an antimicrobial effect on the culture of aquatic organisms. Therefore, this review focuses on the impact of garlic on the health and production of aquatic organisms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Toxicology has been one of the most important topics throughout the history of medicine. Persian medicine (PM) textbooks such as Al-Hawi fi Al-Tib of Rhazes (Razi) can be a useful source for novel information about toxicology and thus we aimed to elucidate Rhazes's methodology in toxicology based on this textbook. METHODS This research is a historical descriptive study. Data were obtained from the book Al-Hawi fi Al-Tib using keywords of poison, poisoning, and relevant terminologies in ArabicAQ1, Persian, and English and also from appropriate literature in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Scientific Information Database (SID), Magiran, and IranDoc. RESULTS After introducing the types of common poisons in his era, Rhazes categorized them into three main categories of plants, animals, and minerals, which cause human poisoning orally or via stings and bites. To identify the poison and make a diagnosis of the corresponding toxidrome, he conducted a thorough physical examination of the patient, carefully observing signs and symptoms, and then treated the poisoning using pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical modalities. In the book Al-Hawi fi Al-Tib, Rhazes has provided comprehensive information about the types of poisons, their effects on the human body, the signs and symptoms of poisonings, and relevant diagnostic and therapeutic methods. DISCUSSION Rhazes had a great contributing role to the science of toxicology. We suggest future research on an in-depth analysis of other PM references for toxicology knowledge and how they may foster the science of toxicology.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been a more prudent use of drugs on livestock farms and alternative products have been considered, with a view of reducing the risk of the onset of antibiotic resistance. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) may cause disease in poultry, and it is also responsible for human food poisoning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of garlic against S. Enteritidis and to define its Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)90 and MIC50 values. The study was carried out in vitro, testing 26 S. Enteritidis strains identified in laying hens from various farms in Southern Italy. A preliminary efficacy trial was carried out on two strains, S. Enteritidis and Escherichia coli, using a garlic concentration of 10 mg/mL (1%). Later, 26 strains of S. Enteritidis at 106 Colony Forming Unit (CFU) and 104 CFU were tested with different concentrations of garlic, ranging from 10 mg/mL to 1 mg/mL. Based on the results, intermediate concentrations of garlic, from 5 mg/mL to 4 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL to 3 mg/mL, were used to test 106 CFU and 104 CFU, respectively. The data were statistically analyzed. The MIC90 was 4.75 mg/mL for strains tested at 106 CFU and 4 mg/mL for strains tested at 104 CFU. The results highlight garlic's potential to inhibit the growth of Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis in vitro. Efficacy was dependent on the microbial concentration used. In vivo efficacy trials will be crucial to confirm the efficacy of garlic against S. Enteritidis and to assess whether garlic can be used in poultry flocks to prevent the spread of the bacterium in the field.

Abstract
Allicin, the active compound of garlic extract, is a naturally sourced biomolecule, which promotes a vast range of health benefits. However, the limited stability of allicin restricts its applications in tissue engineering. Additionally, the detailed effects of allicin in bone health are yet to be explored. Our work reports on the fabrication of a novel allicin-loaded hydroxyapatite drug delivery system with enhanced biological properties. The fabricated system shows excellent antibacterial efficiency against S. aureus after 36 h of bacterial interaction with a sample. The allicin release kinetics are enhanced with polycaprolactone (PCL). The obtained results after 20 days of drug release study indicate that PCL coating leads to an increase in cumulative allicin release from ~ 35% to 70% at a physiological pH of 7.4. These scaffolds maintain stability during the whole period of drug release. Cytocompatibility of tested compositions with osteoblasts indicates enhanced cell viability and good filopodial attachment on the sample surface at day 7. These allicin-loaded antibacterial and cytocompatible scaffolds can find applications as localized delivery vehicles for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Biofilm formation on surfaces via microbial colonization causes infections and has become a major health issue globally. The biofilm lifestyle provides resistance to environmental stresses and antimicrobial therapies. Biofilms can cause several chronic conditions, and effective treatment has become a challenge due to increased antimicrobial resistance. Antibiotics available for treating biofilm-associated infections are generally not very effective and require high doses that may cause toxicity in the host. Therefore, it is essential to study and develop efficient anti-biofilm strategies that can significantly reduce the rate of biofilm-associated healthcare problems. In this context, some effective combating strategies with potential anti-biofilm agents, including plant extracts, peptides, enzymes, lantibiotics, chelating agents, biosurfactants, polysaccharides, organic, inorganic, and metal nanoparticles, etc., have been reviewed to overcome biofilm-associated healthcare problems. From their extensive literature survey, it can be concluded that these molecules with considerable structural alterations might be applied to the treatment of biofilm-associated infections, by evaluating their significant delivery to the target site of the host. To design effective anti-biofilm molecules, it must be assured that the minimum inhibitory concentrations of these anti-biofilm compounds can eradicate biofilm-associated infections without causing toxic effects at a significant rate.

Abstract
The full utilization of garlic straw can partially alleviate shortage of feedstuff and waste of resources. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of garlic straw as an unconventional feed on yellow-feathered broilers. 360 28-day-old yellow-feathered broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 replicates (cage) per group, 15 per cage. The 4 groups were as follows: control group (basal diet) and experimental group I (basal diet supplemented with 3% garlic straw powder), II (basal diet supplemented with 6% garlic straw powder) and III (basal diet supplemented with 9% garlic straw powder). There was no significant difference in the initial body weight of the broilers among groups (p > 0.05). The test period was 28 days in total. The experiment results showed that there were no significant difference in the average final weight, ADG, ADFI and F/G among groups (p > 0.05). On the one hand, for the breast muscle, the drip loss of experimental group I, II and III were reduced by 17.24% (p <0.05), 20.11% (p <0.05) and 20.50% (p <0.05), respectively, compared with the control group; the redness a* of the experimental groups had a trend of improvement (0.05 <p < 0.1). On the other hand, compared with the control group, the redness a* of the experimental group II increased significantly by 23.18% for the leg muscles (p < 0.05). Furthermore, compared with the control group, GSH-Px of the experimental group III significantly increased by 21.38% (p < 0.05), and SOD of the experimental group I significantly increased by 21.85% (p < 0.05). Finally, there were no significant differences in the intestinal villus height, crypt depth, V/C and intestinal wall thickness among four groups (p >0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of different levels of garlic straw powder can improve meat quality and antioxidant capacity of yellow-feathered broilers without affecting growth performance and intestinal mucosal morphology.

Abstract
AIM The study aimed to profile the volatile phytocomposition of snow mountain garlic (SMG) compared to common garlic and investigate the anti-Candida efficacy against clinically relevant multi-drug resistant isolates of Candida species. METHODS AND RESULTS Herein, SMG has shown significantly superior fungicidal power at 2x-MIC dose against C. albicans and C. glabrata in killing kinetic evaluation unlike fungistatic effect of common garlic. GC-MS headspace-based profiling of SMG showed 5 unique volatile compounds and 5-fold higher content of saponins than common garlic. In an in-silico analysis, Cholesta-4,6-dien-3-ol,(3-beta) was uniquely identified in SMG as a potential inhibitor with high binding affinity to the active site of exo-1,3-betaglucan synthase, an established anti-candida drug target crucial for the biofilm matrix formation, thus suggesting a plausible antifungal mechanism. CONCLUSION The in-vitro and in-silico study established Candida-cidal and anti-biofilm activities of SMG that differentiate it from Candida-static efficacy of common garlic. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report that identifies several phytochemical signatures of SMG along with a potential anti-fungal compound, i.e. Cholesta-4,6-dien-3-ol,(3-beta)-, which appears worthy of detailed studies in future to explore utility of SMG as a fungal phytotherapy agent, especially against drug resistant Candida sp.

Abstract
Background This investigation was designed to evaluate the insecticidal, antiplasmodial, anti-leishmanial, and cytotoxic effects of Capparis spinosa essential oil (CSEO) and its main components, methyl isothiocyanate, hexadecanoic acid, and limonene. Methods Insecticidal activity of CSEO and its main components, methyl isothiocyanate, hexadecanoic acid, and limonene, was determined against Aedes aegypti 4th-instar larvae at 25 ± 2°C. Antiplasmodial and anti-leishmanial effects of CSEO and its main components were carried out against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum K1 strain and Leishmania major amastigotes based on the Malstat method and the macrophage model, respectively. We also performed the cytotoxic activity of CZEO and its main components against J774A1 macrophage cells using the colorimetric MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. In addition, the plasma membrane permeability and caspase-3-like activity CSEO and its main components were evaluated against L. major. Results CSEO and its main components showed considerable (p < 0.001) larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti larva. The 50% lethal concentration values for CSEO, methyl isothiocyanate, hexadecanoic acid, and limonene were 21.6, 30.9, 41.6, and 35.3 μg/mL, respectively. By antiplasmodial effects, the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values for CSEO, methyl isothiocyanate, hexadecanoic acid, and limonene were 7.4, 14.5, 19.6, and 21.3 μg/mL, respectively, while these values for their anti-leishmanial effects were 9.1, 20.7, 23.3, and 18.6 μg/mL, respectively. The 50% cytotoxic concentration values for CSEO, methyl isothiocyanate, hexadecanoic acid, and limonene were 93.7, 216.2, 199.4, and 221.3 μg/mL, respectively. Different concentrations of CSEO and its main components significantly (p < 0.05) increased the plasma membrane permeability and caspase-3-like activity against L. major promastigote level as dose-dependent response. Conclusion Based on the obtained results, C. spinosa essential oil and its main components, methyl isothiocyanate, hexadecanoic acid, and limonene, displayed insecticidal, antiplasmodial, and anti-leishmanial activity against healthy 4th-instar larvae of A. aegypti, chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum K1 strain, and L. major amastigotes, respectively. However, further surveys are required to display the mechanisms of action mode of tested drugs and their efficacy in animal model and clinical settings.

Abstract
Background Polymicrobial biofilms are notorious for causing intraoral tissue destruction. Streptococcus sanguinis and Streptococcus mitis, commensals of oral cavities, have been found co-existing with C. albicans in resistant oral infections. There is an urgent need to find alternative treatment options. This study aims to assess the efficacy of garlic (G) and bakuchiol (Bk) combination against candida virulent genes and their subsequently secreted proteins. Methods In vitro single species biofilms of C. albicans, and mixed species biofilms formed in combination with streptococci were exposed to bakuchiol and garlic extract (Bk+G). Gene expression of agglutinin-like sequence (ALS1), (ALS3), adhesin-like wall proteins (HWP1) and aspartyl proteinases (SAP5) were determined using qPCR and their subsequent proteins were assessed through Western blotting. Results Virulent genes were significantly downregulated in single species biofilms when they were treated with Bk+G combination. However, Bk+G did not have significant effect on ALS1 and HWP1 gene in polymicrobial biofilms. ALS3 and SAP5 were significantly downregulated in Bk+G treated polymicrobial biofilm. Similar results were portrayed in Western blotting. Conclusion Bk+G combination exhibited antimicrobial effects against single and mixed species biofilms. The findings might provide insights for treating resistant candida infections. This combination could potentially serve as an herbal alternative to traditional antifungals following further research.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat of the twenty-first century and represents an important risk to the global economy. Healthcare-associated infections mainly caused by drug-resistant bacteria are wreaking havoc in patient care worldwide. The spread of such pathogens limits the utility of available drugs and complicates the treatment of bacterial diseases. As a result, there is an urgent need for new drugs with mechanisms of action capable of curbing resistance. Plants synthesize and utilize various metabolic compounds to deter pathogens and predators. Utilizing these plant-based metabolites is a promising option in identifying novel bioactive compounds that could be harnessed to develop new potent antimicrobial drugs to treat multidrug-resistant pathogens. The purpose of this review is to highlight medicinal plants as important sources of novel antimicrobial agents that could be developed to help combat antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract
Inverse vulcanization is a bulk polymerization method for synthesizing high sulfur content polymers from elemental sulfur, a byproduct of the petrochemical industry, with vinylic comonomers. There is growing interest in polysulfides as novel antimicrobial agents due to the antimicrobial activity of natural polysulfides found in garlic and onions (Tsao et al. J. Antimicrob. Chemother. 2001, 47, 665-670). Herein, we report the antibacterial properties of several inverse vulcanized polymers against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, two common causes of nosocomial infection and pathogens identified by the World Health Organization as priorities for antimicrobial development. High sulfur content polymers were synthesized with different divinyl comonomers and at different sulfur/comonomer ratios, to determine the effect of such variables on the antibacterial properties of the resulting materials. Furthermore, polymers were tested for their potential as antibacterial materials at different temperatures. It was found that the test temperature influenced the antibacterial efficacy of the polymers and could be related to the glass transition temperature of the polymer. These findings provide further understanding of the antibacterial properties of inverse vulcanized polymers and show that such polymers have the potential to be used as antibacterial surfaces.

Abstract
Background Since no effective vaccine has been developed for toxoplasmosis, prophylaxis in seronegative pregnant women and immunocompromised patients with a CD4 <100 cells/μL is highly recommended as an ideal strategy to prevent this disease. This study aimed to assess the chemical composition, in vitro, and in vivo effects of Allium sativum essential oil (ASEO) against Toxoplasma gondii RH strain. Methods The in vitro anti-Toxoplasma effects of different concentrations of ASEO (32.5, 75, 150 µg/mL) were measured by MTT assay for 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 h. Male Balb/c mice were orally administrated ASEO at the doses of 200, 400, and 600 µg/kg/day for 14 days. One day after the completion of oral drug administration, the mice in all groups were infected intraperitoneally with 1×104 tachyzoites. They were checked daily and the rate of survival was recorded. The peritoneal fluids of the mice were collected and the mean number of tachyzoites was calculated via a light microscope. The level of liver lipid peroxidation (LPO) and nitric oxide (NO), toxicity effects on the liver and kidney, and the mRNA expression levels of some pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IFN-γ were determined by quantitative real-time PCR. Results Different concentrations of ASEO showed a significant (p < 0.001) anti-Toxoplasma activity against T. gondii tachyzoites, and the highest efficacy was observed at the concentration of 150 µg/mL. Fourteen days of pre-treatment of infected mice with ASEO at the doses of 200, 400, and 600 µg/kg/day significantly (p < 0.001) decreased the mean number of tachyzoites and mortality rate by the 6th, 7th, and 8th days after infection, respectively. ASEO at the doses of 200, 400, and 600 µg/kg/day significantly (p < 0.05) improved the increase in the LPO and NO. Pre-treatment of mice with different doses of ASEO provoked a considerable (P < 0.001) downregulation of IL-1β and IFN-γ mRNA gene expression levels, but it had no significant toxicity on the serum levels of some liver and kidney enzymes. Conclusion The present study demonstrated the considerable prophylactic effects of ASEO that increased the survival rate of mice and reduced the parasite load in them. Our findings also showed that ASEO promotes the innate immune system, pro-inflammatory cytokines, inhibition of hepatic injury, etc. in the mice with acute toxoplasmosis. However, additional investigations are mandatory to clarify the accurate prophylactic and therapeutic anti-Toxoplasma mechanisms of ASEO as well as all its toxicity aspects, especially in clinical settings.

Abstract
Sulfane sulfur, such as inorganic and organic polysulfide (HSn- and RSn-, n > 2), is a common cellular component, produced either from hydrogen sulfide oxidation or cysteine metabolism. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, LasR is a quorum sensing master regulator. After binding its autoinducer, LasR binds to its target DNA to activate the transcription of a suite of genes, including virulence factors. Herein, we report that the production of hydrogen sulfide and sulfane sulfur were positively correlated in P. aeruginosa PAO1, and sulfane sulfur was able to modify LasR, which generated Cys188 persulfide and trisulfide and produced a pentasulfur link between Cys201 and Cys203. The modifications did not affect LasR binding to its target DNA site, but made it several-fold more effective than unmodified LasR in activating transcription in both in vitro and in vivo assays. On the contrary, H2O2 inactivates LasR via producing a disulfide bond between Cys201 and Cys203. P. aeruginosa PAO1 had a high cellular sulfane sulfur and high LasR activity in the mid log phase and early stationary phase, but a low sulfane sulfur and low LasR activity in the declination phase. Thus, sulfane sulfur is a new signaling factor in the bacterium, adding another level of control over LasR-mediated quorum sensing and turning down the activity in old cells.

Abstract
Consumption or handling of poultry and poultry products contaminated with Campylobacter species are a leading cause of foodborne illness in humans. Current strategies employed to reduce Campylobacter in live chickens provide inconsistent results indicating the need for an alternative approach. This study investigated the efficacy of phytochemicals, namely, turmeric, curcumin, allyl sulfide, garlic oil, and ginger oil, to reduce Campylobacter jejuni in postharvest poultry and sought to delineate the underlying mechanisms of action. Two experiments were conducted on the thigh skin of the chicken, and each experiment was repeated twice. Samples were inoculated with 50 μl (∼107 CFU/sample) of C. jejuni strain S-8 and allowed to adhere for 30 min. Skin samples were dipped into their respective prechilled treatment solutions (0.25 and 0.5% in experiments 1 and 2, respectively) at 4°C for an hour to simulate chilling tank treatment, followed by plating to enumerate C. jejuni (n = 3 samples/treatment/trial). The mechanisms of action(s) were investigated using subinhibitory concentration (SIC) in adhesion, quorum sensing, and gene expression analyses. Adhesion assay was conducted on the monolayers of ATCC CRL-1590 chicken embryo cells challenged with C. jejuni and incubated in the presence or absence of phytochemicals for 1.5 h, followed by plating to enumerate adhered C. jejuni. The effects of phytochemicals on quorum sensing and cell viability were investigated using Vibrio harveyi bioluminescence and LIVE/Dead BacLightTM bacterial viability assays, respectively. In addition, droplet digital PCR determined the gene expression analyses of C. jejuni exposed to phytochemicals. Data were analyzed by GraphPad Prism version 9. C. jejuni counts were reduced by 1.0–1.5 Log CFU/sample with garlic oil or ginger oil at 0.25 and 0.5% (p < 0.05). The selected phytochemicals (except curcumin) reduced the adhesion of C. jejuni to chicken embryo cells (p < 0.05). In addition, all the phytochemicals at SIC reduced quorum sensing of C. jejuni (p < 0.05). The cell viability test revealed that cells treated with 0.25% of phytochemicals had compromised cell membranes indicating this as a mechanism that phytochemicals use to damage/kill C. jejuni. This study supports that the application of phytochemicals in postharvest poultry would significantly reduce C. jejuni in poultry meat.

Abstract
Garlic (Allium sativum) is an essential vegetable that has been widely utilized as seasoning, flavoring, culinary and in herbal remedies. Garlic contains several characteristic organosulfur compounds, such as diallyl sulfide, allicin (diallyl thiosulphate), γ-glutamylcysteine, and S-allyl cysteine (alliin) and ajoene, which garlic has beneficial effects on inflammation, oxidative stress markers, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and endothelial function in vitro or in animal model. These bioactive molecules are also playing pivotal role in livestock and fisheries production apart from its application in humans. Supplementation of animal feed with garlic and its related products is consistent with the modern agricultural concept of organic animal husbandry. This review compiles the information describing the effects of feeding garlic and its extracts on selected performance parameters in animals (chicken, rabbits, ruminants, pigs and fish). This review may provide reference for scientists and entrepreneurs to investigate the applications of feeds added with garlic and allicin by-products for the improvement of animal husbandry and aquatic production.

Abstract
Microbial resistance has progressed rapidly and is becoming the leading cause of death globally. The spread of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms has been a significant threat to the successful therapy against microbial infections. Scientists have become more concerned about the possibility of a return to the pre-antibiotic era. Thus, searching for alternatives to fight microorganisms has become a necessity. Some bacteria are naturally resistant to antibiotics, while others acquire resistance mainly by the misuse of antibiotics and the emergence of new resistant variants through mutation. Since ancient times, plants represent the leading source of drugs and alternative medicine for fighting against diseases. Plants are rich sources of valuable secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, quinones, tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids, and polyphenols. Many studies focus on plant secondary metabolites as a potential source for antibiotic discovery. They have the required structural properties and can act by different mechanisms. This review analyses the antibiotic resistance strategies produced by multidrug-resistant bacteria and explores the phytochemicals from different classes with documented antimicrobial action against resistant bacteria, either alone or in combination with traditional antibiotics.

Abstract
Garlic has long been known as the most effective plant species in treatment of bacterial infections. Considering the vast potential of garlic as a source of antimicrobial drugs, this study is aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Allium sativum extracts and their interactions with selected antibiotics against drug-sensitive and multidrug-resistant isolates of emerging bacterial pathogens that are frequently found in healthcare settings. As shown by the in vitro data obtained in this study, the whole Allium sativum extract inhibited the growth of a broad range of bacteria, including multidrug-resistant strains with bactericidal or bacteriostatic effects. Depending on the organism, the susceptibility to fresh garlic extract was comparable to the conventional antibiotic gentamycin. Since the combinations of fresh garlic extract with gentamycin and ciprofloxacin inhibited both the drug sensitive and MDR bacteria, in most cases showing a synergistic or insignificant relationship, the potential use of such combinations may be beneficial, especially in inhibiting drug-resistant pathogens. The study results indicate the possibility of using garlic as e.g. a supplement used during antibiotic therapy, which may increase the effectiveness of gentamicin and ciprofloxacin.

Abstract
In this paper we describe the preparation of a new bionanocomposite based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Arabic gum (AG) and gelatin (GL), incorporating garlic extract (GE) and TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs). The prepared bionanocomposites were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and were evaluated for their antimicrobial effect. The permeability and thermal and mechanical properties of the films were assessed. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), oxygen transmission rate (OTR), and mechanical, thermal and antimicrobial properties of the prepared bionanocomposite films were enhanced by the addition of GE and TiO2-NPs. The effects of GE and TiO2-NPs in combination incorporated into a CMC/AG/GL blend as an edible coating on the quality of fresh Nile tilapia fish fillets during refrigerated storage were evaluated. The microbiological status and weight loss of fresh Nile tilapia fish fillets were periodically tested for 21 days during storage at 4 °C. The results indicated that GE combined with TiO2-NPs has a synergistic influence on the enhancement of the preservation properties of CMC/AG/GL/GE–TiO2 bionanocomposites for refrigerated tilapia fish fillets, which could control microbial growth, and decrease weight loss during the storage of tilapia fish fillets. In current work a new bionanocomposite based on carboxymethyl cellulose, Arabic gum and gelatin, incorporating garlic extract and TiO2 nanoparticles as an edible coating for preserving the fresh Nile tilapia fish fillets during cold storage.![]()

Abstract
The objective of this research was to comparatively investigate the effect of hot air drying (HA) and hybrid microwave-infrared drying (MI) on physico-chemical characteristics of Thai fermented fish viscera, Tai-Pla, curry powder (TCP). HA was carried out at 60°C, 70°C, and 80°C and MI was carried out at a microwave power of 740, 780, and 810 W with a constant infrared heating power (500 W) for different drying times to obtain the final moisture content ≤ 12.0% and the water activity (aw) ≤ 0.6. The quality characteristics of TCP were governed by HA temperature and MI output power. TCP dried using HA and MI at all conditions had similar contents of protein, lipid, ash, fiber, and carbohydrate (p>0.05). The fastest drying rate was detected when MI at 810 W for 40 min was applied (p<0.05). In this condition, TCP had the lowest browning index (A294 and A420) and the highest lightness (L* value) (p<0.05). TCP dried with MI at all powers had higher phenolic content and lower TBARS compared to HA (p<0.05). However, no significant differences in DPPH• scavenging activity were observed among TPC made by HA and MI (p>0.05). Similar Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra with different peak intensities were observed in all samples, indicating the same functional groups with different contents were found. The bulk density of all TCP ranged from 0.51 g/mL to 0.61 g/mL and the wettability ranged from 24.02% to 26.70%. MI at 810 W for 40 min effectively reduced the drying time (5-fold faster) and lowered the specific energy consumption (18-fold lower) compared to the HA at 60°C for 210 min. Therefore, MI is a promising drying technique to reduce the drying time and improve the overall quality of TCP.

Abstract
Background Emerging viral infections are among the major global public health concerns. The pandemic COVID-19 is a contagious respiratory and vascular disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). There are no medicines that can treat SARS-CoV-2 except the vaccines. Therefore, searching for plant-originated therapeutics for the treatment of COVID-19 is required. Consequently, reviewing medicinal plants used to treat different viral infections is mandatory. This review article aims to review the ethnobotanical knowledge of medicinal plants traditionally used to treat different viral diseases by the Ethiopian people and suggests those plants as candidates to fight COVID-19. Methods Articles written in English were searched from online public databases using searching terms like “Traditional Medicine,” “Ethnobotanical study,” “Active components,” “Antiviral activities,” and “Ethiopia.” Ethnobotanical data were analyzed using the Excel statistical software program. Result From the 46 articles reviewed, a total of 111 plant species were claimed to treat viral infections. Fifty-six (50.4%) of the plant species had reported to have antiviral active components that are promising to treat COVID-19. Lycorine, gingerol shogaol, resveratrol, rhoifolin, oleanolic acid, kaempferol, rosmarinic acid, almond oil, ursolic acid, hederagenin, nigellidine, α-hederin, apigenin, nobiletin, tangeretin, chalcone, hesperidin, epigallocatechin gallate, allicin, diallyl trisulfide, ajoene, aloenin, artemisinin, glucobrassicin, curcumin, piperine, flavonoids, anthraquinone, hydroxychloroquine, and jensenone were some of them. Conclusion The Ethiopian traditional knowledge applies a lot of medicinal plants to treat different viral infections. Reports of the chemical components of many of them confirm that they can be promising to fight COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of dietary turmeric or garlic extract on physiological responses, hematological parameters, antioxidants status, testicular functions, and health indices of heat-stressed rabbit males. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy bucks were distributed into seven experimental groups (ten/group). A commercial diet (CD) was fed to rabbit males in the control group, while males in G2, G3, and G4 were fed CD with turmeric at 30, 60, and 90 mg/kg, respectively. Males in G5, G6, and G7 were fed CD with garlic extract at 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg, respectively, for 8 weeks. RESULTS The results showed that turmeric or garlic extract levels decreased ear temperature, respiration rate, germ cell apoptotic number, total cholesterol, triglycerides, malondialdehyde level, libido, and sperm of dead and abnormal tail (p < 0.05). The hemoglobin and red and white blood cells, platelets, total antioxidants capacity, mass motility, mitochondrial potential, normal, acrosome reacted, normality, and a total functional fraction of spermatozoa and relative of epididymal weight were increased (p < 0.05). The increased packed cell volume percentage and initial semen fructose were significant only when 100 mg per kg garlic extract was supplemented. CONCLUSION Phytochemicals extract supplementation can be an effective dietary supplementation to eliminate heat stress and improve health, oxidative capacity, and testicular functions of rabbit males.

Abstract
In addition to specific antibiotic resistance, the formation of bacterial biofilm causes another level of complications in attempts to eradicate pathogenic or harmful bacteria, including difficult penetration of drugs through biofilm structures to bacterial cells, impairment of immunological response of the host, and accumulation of various bioactive compounds (enzymes and others) affecting host physiology and changing local pH values, which further influence various biological functions. In this review article, we provide an overview on the formation of bacterial biofilm and its properties, and then we focus on the possible use of phage-derived depolymerases to combat bacterial cells included in this complex structure. On the basis of the literature review, we conclude that, although these bacteriophage-encoded enzymes may be effective in destroying specific compounds involved in the formation of biofilm, they are rarely sufficient to eradicate all bacterial cells. Nevertheless, a combined therapy, employing depolymerases together with antibiotics and/or other antibacterial agents or factors, may provide an effective approach to treat infections caused by bacteria able to form biofilms.

Abstract
Natural products have historically been a rich source of diverse chemical matter with numerous biological activities, and have played an important role in drug discovery in many areas including infectious disease. Synthetic and medicinal chemistry have been, and continue to be, important tools to realize the potential of natural products as therapeutics and as chemical probes. The formation of biofilms by bacteria in an infection setting is a significant factor in the recalcitrance of many bacterial infections, conferring increased tolerance to many antibiotics and to the host immune response, and as yet there are no approved therapeutics for combatting biofilm-based bacterial infections. Small molecules that interfere with the ability of bacteria to form and maintain biofilms can overcome antibiotic tolerance conferred by the biofilm phenotype, and have the potential to form combination therapies with conventional antibiotics. Many natural products with anti-biofilm activity have been identified from plants, microbes, and marine life, including: elligic acid glycosides, hamamelitannin, carolacton, skyllamycins, promysalin, phenazines, bromoageliferin, flustramine C, meridianin D, and brominated furanones. Total synthesis and medicinal chemistry programs have facilitated structure confirmation, identification of critical structural motifs, better understanding of mechanistic pathways, and the development of more potent, more accessible, or more pharmacologically favorable derivatives of anti-biofilm natural products.

Abstract
Sa lmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) represents an important global public health problem and has the ability to survive under desiccation conditions in foods and food processing facilities for years. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Allium sativum (A. sativum) and Cuminum cyminum (C. cyminum) essential oils (EOs) against planktonic growth, biofilm formation and quorum sensing (QS) of S. Typhimurium isolates, the strong biofilm producers. The major components of EOs were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Biofilm formation of S. Typhimurium isolates was measured by crystal violet staining. Then, the effects of the EOs on the planktonic cell growth (using determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC)), measurement of the synergistic effects of EOs (using checkerboard method), biofilm formation (using microtiter-plate test and scanning electron microscope (SEM)), and expression of QS and cellulose synthesis genes (using quantitative real-time PCR) were assessed. Finally, tetrazolium-based colorimetric (MTT) assay was used to examine EOs cytotoxicity on the Vero cell line. GC-MS analysis showed that terpineol, carene and pinene in C. cyminum EO and sulfur compounds in A. sativum EO were the major components of the plant extract. The Geometric mean of MIC values of the A. sativum and C. cyminum were 0.66 and 2.62 μL mL-1, respectively. The geometric means of the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICi) for both EOs were calculated as 1.05. The qPCR results showed that MIC/2 concentrations of both EOs significantly down-regulated of QS (sdiA and luxS) and cellulose synthesis (csgD and adrA) genes. Scanning electron microscopy showed the EOs reduced the amount of S. Typhimurium mature biofilm. In general, we showed that C. cyminum and A. sativum EOs can be considered as the potential agents against planktonic and biofilm form of S. Typhimurium without any concern of cytotoxic effect at 4 MIC concentrations on the eukaryotic Vero cells.
