Abstract
Natural Health Products (NHPs) have long been considered a valuable therapeutic approach for the prevention and treatment of various diseases, including cancer. However, research on this topic has led to inconclusive and often controversial results. This review aims to provide a comprehensive update of the effects and mechanisms related to the use of NHPs, to describe the results of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on their effects in cancer patients, and to critically discuss factors influencing clinical outcomes. RCTs available in the literature, even those studying the same NHP, are very heterogeneous in terms of indications, doses, route and timing of administration, and outcomes evaluated. Silymarin, ginsenoside, and vitamin E appear to be useful in attenuating adverse events related to radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and curcumin and lycopene might provide some benefit in patients with prostate cancer. Most RCTs have not clarified whether NHP supplementation provides any real benefit, while harmful effects have been shown in some cases. Overall, the available data suggest that although there is some evidence to support the benefits of NHPs in the management of cancer patients, further clinical trials with the same design are needed before their introduction into clinical practice can be considered.

Abstract
This article evaluates the reliability and consistency of nutrition- and supplementation-related advice for pregnant women provided by ten selected health-related Internet portals. The portals were chosen based on their perceived reliability and prominence in Google searches, with representation from both English and Polish language sources. The evaluation criteria included the adherence of the presented information to official recommendations and its evidence-based character based on specific items representing dietary aspects important in pregnancy. While the overall reliability was deemed acceptable, significant variations existed both among the portals and specific evaluated items. Notably, HealthLine, Medline Plus, and NCEZ emerged as the most evidence-based, while WebMD and Medycyna Praktyczna were identified as less reliable. Despite a number of issues, the analysed portals remain valuable sources of nutritional information for pregnant women, offering user-friendly accessibility superior to alternatives such as social media on the one hand and scientific articles on the other. Improved consistency and attention to detail, especially in relation to vitamin intake and supplementation, would improve the overall quality of health portals.

Abstract
Sexual problems are common complaints across countries and cultures, and behavioral immune system theory suggests disgust plays an essential role in sexual functioning. The current study investigated 1) if disgust induced by sexual body fluids would reduce sexual arousal, reduce the likelihood of sexual engagement, and enhance disgust toward subsequent erotic stimuli, and 2) if the administration of ginger would affect these reactions. We administered either ginger or placebo pills to a sample of 247 participants (Mage = 21.59, SD = 2.52; 122 women) and asked them to complete either behavioral approach tasks with sexual body fluids or with neutral fluids. Next, participants viewed and responded to questions concerning erotic stimuli (nude and seminude pictures of opposite-sex models). As expected, the sexual body fluids tasks induced disgust. The elevated disgust induced by sexual body fluids tasks resulted in lower sexual arousal in women, whereas ginger consumption counteracted this inhibiting effect of disgust on sexual arousal. Disgust elicited by sexual body fluids also increased disgust toward the subsequent erotic stimuli. Ginger increased sexual arousal toward the erotic stimuli in both men and women who had completed the neutral fluids tasks. Findings provide further evidence of the role of disgust in sexual problems, and, importantly, that ginger may improve the sexual function of individuals via its sexual arousal-enhancing effect.

Abstract
(1) Background: Gastric cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Weight loss and malnutrition associated with cancer are linked with increased mortality rates and reduced quality of life. Cancer cachexia, characterised by the loss of skeletal muscle, is associated with approximately 20% of cancer-related deaths and differs from malnutrition in that it cannot be fully reversed by nutritional support alone. It is now recognised that the primary pathophysiological process underlying cancer cachexia is chronic inflammation leading to increased calorie consumption. Current treatments that focus on nutritional supplementation, psychological counselling, appetite stimulation and reducing inflammation are lacking in efficacy. This review focuses on the evidence supporting the potential roles of natural anti-inflammatory products and their derivatives including fatty acids, probiotics, amino acids, curcumin, fucoidan, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, ginger, resveratrol and Boswellia serrata in the management of gastric cancer cachexia. (2) Results: While natural anti-inflammatory products show promise in a number of in vitro and in vivo studies, there are only a small number of human studies available. Where present, the evidence base is heterogeneous, with varying study methodologies and outcomes. (3) Conclusions: Natural anti-inflammatory products represent a potential adjunctive therapy for gastric cancer cachexia. Further research, particularly well-designed clinical trials, is needed to elucidate their optimal role, dosing and safety profiles in the management of gastric cancer cachexia.

Abstract
The health benefits of ginger rhizomes (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) have been known for centuries. Recently, ginger root has gained more attention due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Many of the bioactive components of ginger may have therapeutic benefits in treating inflammatory arthritis. Their properties seem especially helpful in treating diseases linked to persistent inflammation and pain, symptoms present in the course of the most prevalent rheumatic diseases, such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This review analyzes the current knowledge regarding ginger's beneficial anti-inflammatory effect in both in vitro and in vivo studies as well as clinical trials. The drug delivery systems to improve ginger's bioavailability and medicinal properties are discussed. Understanding ginger's beneficial aspects may initiate further studies on improving its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy and achieving more a comprehensive application in medicine.

Abstract
Ginger may be a potential remedy for nausea and vomiting. This review aimed to assess the reporting and methodological quality, and integrate the evidence in this field. A total of fifteen meta-analyses were analysed and met the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2009 guidelines, providing a relatively complete statement. However, methodological quality, assessed using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews-2 checklist, was deemed critically low to low. Our review's findings support ginger's effectiveness in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. It also reduces postoperative nausea and vomiting severity, decreasing the need for rescue antiemetics. Furthermore, ginger shows promise in alleviating pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting symptoms. The pooled evidence suggests ginger as a safe botanical option for managing nausea and vomiting, but it is important to improve the scientific quality of published meta-analyses in the future.

Abstract
Ayurveda, an ancient holistic and personalized healing system originating from the Indian subcontinent, has been gaining increasing attention as a complementary and alternative medical practice for treating various health conditions, including those related to women's reproductive well-being. This comprehensive literature review examines a wide array of experimental and clinical studies exploring the diverse facets of Ayurvedic interventions in addressing issues such as menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), infertility, and menopausal symptoms. The paper specifically focuses on discussing the available data regarding the efficacy of Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), ginger (Zingiber officinale), cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), turmeric (Curcuma longa), and Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), which have traditionally been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The synthesis of literature not only highlights the potential benefits of these Ayurvedic interventions, but also critically assesses the methodological rigor of existing studies, identifying research gaps, and proposing directions for future investigations. While acknowledging the need for further rigorous research and clinical trials, the review emphasizes the benefits of collaborative and integrative healthcare. This review aims to serve as a valuable resource for healthcare practitioners, researchers, and individuals seeking holistic and natural alternatives for female reproductive health management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to its systemic toxicity, traditional chemotherapy of tumors is being taken into consideration. Herbal therapy, containing phytochemical polyphenol derivatives such as Curcumin (Cur), Ginger (Gin), Cloves (Clov) and Amygdaline (Amyg), is one of the numerous complementary and alternative approaches as an anti-cancer therapy and holds great promise for cancer chemo-prevention with fewer side effects. AIM The current study was designated to assess anti-tumoral immunity and anti-cancer and chemo-preventive effectiveness of herbal extracts of Cur, Ginger, Clov and Amyg in Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC)-challenging mice. METHODS Chemo-preventive efficacy of herbal extracts of Cur, Gin, Clov and Amyg were analyzed in vivo by examination of the apoptosis rate of EAC tumor cells by flow cytometry. The total numbers of EAC cells, splenocytes counts and leucocytes count with their differentials relative % in peripheral blood (PB) of EACchallenging mice were investigated. RESULTS EAC-challenging mice treated with herbal extracts of Cur, Gin, Clov and Amyg showed a marked decline in EAC tumor cell count and a noticeable increase in apoptosis rate of EAC tumor cells, a remarkable decrease in serum level of cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) with an obvious increase in the number of splenocytes comparing to that in EAC-challenging mice treated with PBS alone. Moreover, the data indicated an insignificant change in the total leucocytes count and their differentials relative % of eosinophil, neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes in EAC-challenging mice treated with Cur and Amyg, but these parameters were markedly increased in EAC-challenging mice injected with Gin and Clov compared to that in EAC-challenging mice treated with PBS alone. CONCLUSION To conclude, the herbal extracts of Cur, Gin, Clov and Amyg may have anti-tumoral immunity and anti-cancer potency and potential to reduce the resistance to cancer conventional chemotherapy and exert cancer chemo-protective approaches with low adverse effects. Further research is necessary to determine the regimen's toxicity on various tissues and organs and to connect the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches used in the regimen's biomedical use.

Abstract
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is a plant known all over the world that is used as a spice and as an ingredient in drinks, dietary supplements, and cosmetics. The growing availability of its fresh rhizomes makes it even more likely to be used in the diet, mainly due to its beneficial health properties and high content of polyphenols (gingerols and shogaols). The main goal and motivation of the authors was to assess the bioavailability of active substances contained in the extract from ginger rhizomes in the presence of various types of diets using the in vitro digestion method, enabling simulation of the processes occurring during the digestion and absorption of metabolites in the small intestine. For the qualitative and quantitative analyses, the HPLC-MS (High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) and HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) techniques were used, respectively. Based on the obtained results, it was found that the best bioavailability of the selected ginger polyphenols (6-gingerol, 8-gingerdione, 8-shogaol, and 10-gingerdione) was estimated for a high-fiber diet, while the weakest results were obtained for standard and basic diets. In the case of the high-fiber diet, the bioavailability of the mentioned compounds was estimated as 33.3, 21.4, 6.73, and 21.0%, while for the basic diet, it was only 21.3, 5.3, 2.0, and 1.0%, respectively.

Abstract
We conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, single-center study involving 30 women undergoing breast augmentation surgery with silicone breast implants. All patients had an A cup breast size and a similar body mass index. We placed the same type of implant in a subpectoral dual plane in each patient. We randomly allocated the study participants to receive either three drops of ginger oil (110 mg Zingiber officinale) or three drops of a placebo control oil placed on their laryngeal mask before insertion. We used a postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and a visual analog scale (VAS) scores as outcome measures and compared the scale results with the dose of morphine used by the patient. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance showed that the ginger oil had a significant effect on PONV/VAS scores, V = 0.87, F(3, 16) = 34.78, p < .001. The results of the univariate analysis of variance showed that using the ginger oil provided significant treatment effects on PONV, F(1, 18) = 73.05, p < .001. These results are also reflected in the descriptive statistics. The mean PONV score for the experimental group and the control group was 1.70 ± 0.48 and 4.20 ± 0.79, respectively. The mean VAS score for the experimental group and the control group was 5.0 ± 1.63 and 5.9 ± 2.33, respectively. The results of our study showed that ginger oil has an important role in preventing PONV and reducing the use of postoperative opioids in women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery.

Abstract
Background Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common gastrointestinal disorder with a higher occurrence in the Western world. Conventional medications are not effective for FD with patients turning to alternative herbal medicines such as ginger. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ginger supplementation on the improvement of FD symptoms. Methodology A before-and-after clinical study was conducted at the University of Debrecen, Internal Medicine outpatient department over a period of four weeks. Two Swanson ginger supplements each at a dose of 540 mg/day before lunch and dinner were given to 51 FD patients. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to estimate the differences in FD symptoms after ginger supplementation and at the baseline. The p-value was determined to test the association between variables, with p-values <0.05 considered the cutoff for statistically significant association. Results In this study, after four weeks of ginger supplementation, we observed a significant change in most dyspepsia symptoms as follows: postprandial fullness (p = 0.033, 95% CI = 0.01-0.26), early satiety (p = 0.001, 95% CI = 0.10-0.37), epigastric pain (p = 0.000, 95% CI = 0.16-0.42), epigastric burning (p = 0.003, 95% CI = 0.10-0.45), and heartburn (p = 0.209, 95% CI = -0.04-0.20). Conclusions Based on our findings ginger can be considered as a promising alternative supplementary medicine for FD.

Abstract
Two undescribed labdane diterpenoids (5S,8S,9R,10S,11E)-8,17-epoxy-13,14-dinorlabd-11-en-13-one (1) and (5S,9R,10S,12E)-17-hydroxy-labd-7,12-dien-15(16)-olide (2), together with seven known sesquiterpenoids (3-9) and two known monoterpenoids (10-11) were isolated from the dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale. Their structures were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic data (IR, UV, HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR), X-ray crystallographic and ECD analysis. Moreover, all the 11 compounds were tested for α-glucosidase inhibitory effects and 9 was found to exhibit stronger inhibitory effects at IC50 = 4.8 μM against a positive control acarbose with IC50 = 414.6 μM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Gastroparesis (Gp) and related disorders such as chronic unexplained nausea and vomiting and functional dyspepsia, known as gastropareis syndromes (GpS), have large unmet needs. Mainstays of GpS treatments are diet and drugs. AREAS COVERED The purpose of this review is to explore potential new medications and other therapies for gastroparesis. Before discussing possible new drugs, the currently used drugs are discussed. These include dopamine receptor antagonists, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists and antagonists, neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists and other anti-emetics. The article also considers future drugs that may be used for Gp, based on currently known pathophysiology. EXPERT OPINION Gaps in knowledge about the pathophysiology of gastroparesis and related syndromes are critical to developing therapeutic agents that will be successful. Recent major developments in the gastroparesis arena are related to microscopic anatomy, cellular function, and pathophysiology. The major challenges moving forward will be to develop the genetic and biochemical correlates of these major developments in gastroparesis research.

Abstract
Skin aging is a condition caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Indonesian gingers (Zingiber officinale), which consists of Gajah (GG), Red (MM), and Emprit (EE) ginger, are thought to produce anti-skin aging compounds through enzyme inhibition. The enzymes used in the molecular docking study were collagenase, hyaluronidase, elastase, and tyrosinase. This study aimed to determine the compounds contained in Indonesian ginger rhizome ethanolic extracts using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry to differentiate metabolites contained in the different Indonesian ginger rhizome extracts. A principal component analysis (PCA) and a heat map analysis were used in order to determine which compounds and extracts contained potential anti-skin aging properties based on a molecular docking study. Ascorbic acid was used as a control ligand in the molecular docking study. Ninety-eight compounds were identified in three different ginger rhizomes extracts and were grouped into three separate quadrants. The most potent compound for anti-skin aging in the Indonesian ginger rhizome extracts was octinoxate. Octinoxate showed a high abundance in the EE ginger rhizome extract. Therefore, the EE ginger extract was the Indonesian ginger rhizome extract with the greatest potential for anti-skin aging.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect in female rats of 6 weeks of ginger consumption on gestational diabetes by assessing glucose and lipid metabolism, oxidative damage, inflammation, and the WNT/β-catenin/glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK3β) signaling pathway. In this study, 40 adult female rats were divided into 4 equal groups as follows: pregnant rats, pregnant rats with diabetes, pregnant rats consuming ginger, and pregnant rats with diabetes consuming ginger. Induction of diabetes on day 0 of pregnancy was induced by streptozotocin (STZ) injection. Insulin, glucose, and lipid profiles as metabolic factors were measured along with the hepatic expression of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4), mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORc1), sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPAR-α), β-catenin, GSK3β, PPAR-g, nuclear factor-κB (NF-kB), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). The levels of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and oxidative parameters were measured in the liver. The level of metabolic factors was significantly impaired in diabetic pregnant rats compared to the control group. However, ginger improved these parameters in the diabetic pregnant—ginger group compared to the diabetic pregnant group. The hepatic expression of genes involved in metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, and the wingless and int-1 (WNT) signaling pathway was significantly impaired in diabetic pregnant rats, while ginger improved them in the hepatic tissue of diabetic pregnant rats. It can be concluded that ginger could improve gestational diabetes by genes involved in metabolism, the WNT signaling pathway, oxidative stress, and inflammation. These results suggest that ginger can be an adjunct drug during pregnancy as a metabolic modulator.

Abstract
Introduction Practicing self-medication using conventional and/or herbal drugs during pregnancy could contribute/result in illness and death for the mother and embryo. The focus of the current study was to investigate the level of practice and factors affecting self-medication with conventional and herbal drugs among pregnant women who were on follow-up at the antenatal care (ANC) clinic of Mizan-Tepi University teaching hospital (MTUTH), Southwest Ethiopia. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1st to February 30th, 2022, among 264 pregnant mothers who were on follow-up at antenatal care of MTUTH. A lottery method was used to pick study subjects who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data which was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 24 software. Bivariate followed by multivariate logistic regression was employed to point out factors affecting self-medication practice with conventional and herbal drugs. P-value <0.05 in multivariate analysis was used as a cut-off point to decide statistical significance. Results It was revealed that 44.3 percent and 49.2 percent of pregnant women self-medicate with conventional and herbal medications, respectively. Women with no history of self-medication were 6.69 folds less likely to practice self-medication using conventional medicine than those with prior experience (AOR: 6.69, 95% CI, (3.847–11.659). Having no health insurance increased the odds of self-medication using conventional medicine by about 46% among pregnant women (AOR: 0.687, 95% CI, (0.373–1.264). Pregnant mothers who joined college/university education were more likely to practice self-medication than mothers without formal education (AOR: 0.656, 95% CI, (0.304–1.414). Gravidity, education level, and history of herbal medicine use were factors that influenced pregnant mothers’ use of herbal medicines. Conclusion According to the present investigation, self-medication by expectant mothers is very common; thus, education and guidance of pregnant women and their partners should be considered during their ANC follow-up to minimize self-medication-associated potential threats.

Abstract
Giardia lamblia is one of the most common protozoal parasites in humans, and a major cause of diarrheal illness. Treatment of giardiasis relies on metronidazole (MTZ) and other nitroimidazoles which exhibit some limitations, including variable treatment efficacy and parasite-drug resistance. In this work, we investigated the therapeutic effects of the commercial products of Allium sativum (A. sativum) and Zingiber officinale (Z. officinale), alone and in combination with MTZ, on giardiasis in experimentally infected hamsters. Parasitological assessments: cysts count, cysts viability and trophozoites count, and histopathological assessment were performed. Results revealed that the percentage of reduction in cysts number in the A. sativum, Z. officinale, A. sativum/MTZ, and Z. officinale/MTZ treated groups were of 84.5, 88.9, 82, and 86.1%, respectively, compared to infected non-treated group. While MTZ treated group showed percentage of reduction 79.7%. Regarding the cyst viability, it was reduced by 73.4, 76.9, 64.9, and 70.7%, in the A. sativum, Z. officinale, A. sativum/MTZ, and Z. officinale/MTZ treated groups respectively, compared to 61.9% in the MTZ treated group. For the trophozoites, the percentage of reduction was 64.1, 60.2, 59.4, and 47.3%, respectively, compared to 38.6% in MTZ treated group. The examination of duodenal sections revealed remarkable improvement in the histopathological changes in the A. sativum, Z. officinale, and the MTZ combination groups. In conclusion, A. sativum and Z. officinale preparations showed higher anti-giardial activity compared to MTZ, with higher reduction in Giardia cyst numbers, viability and trophozoite numbers in the experimentally infected hamsters. Further in vivo trials are recommended using A. sativum and Z. officinale preparations in increasing doses to reach a higher cure rate.

Abstract
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizomes are commonly used in foods
and employed for many ailments including gastrointestinal disorders. Our main
objective was to evaluate the effect of Zingiber officinale
aqueous extract (ZOAE) on gastrointestinal (GI) physiological motility and
colonic dysmotility. Thereby, Wistar rats were given loperamide
(LP, 3 mg/kg, b.w.) and ZOAE (75, 150, and 300 mg/kg, b.w.) or yohimbine (YOH,
2 mg/kg, b.w.). ZOAE-action on intestinal secretion was assessed using Ussing
chamber technique and intestinal motility with isometric transducer. GI-transit
(GIT) and gastric emptying (GE) were evaluated with the charcoal meal test and
the red phenol methods. ZOAE-bioactive components were analyzed by liquid
chromatography-high resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry
(LC-HRESIMS). Constipation was induced with LP and the different indicators such
as stool composition, GIT, oxidative stress biological parameters, and colonic
mucosa histological alteration were performed. Anti-constipation effect of ZOAE
was confirmed on stool composition, GIT (53.42% to 85.57%), GE (55.47% to
98.88%), and re-established oxidative balance. ZOAE induces an amplitude
increase of spontaneous intestinal contraction with EC50 of 10.52 μg/mL. No
effect of ZOAE was observed on electrogenic transport of intestinal fluid. These
findings suggest that ZOAE-bioactive candidates might exert an anti-constipation
action and spontaneous intestinal contraction modulation.

Abstract
Standardized [6]-gingerol extracts were prepared by microwave-assisted extraction using 20% v/v glycerin in ethanol and 20% v/v eutectic mixture of sucrose and citric acid in ethanol as alternative green solvents. The extracts obtained from 20% v/v glycerin in ethanol (GEE) and 20% v/v eutectic mixture of sucrose and citric acid in ethanol (EMSCEE) were standardized by HPLC to contain 17.0 mg/g of [6]-gingerol. The effects of the extracts on mouse ileal contractions via M3 and 5-HT3 receptors as well as lower esophageal sphincter (LES) contraction were determined in vitro relative to the marker compound, [6]-gingerol. [6]-Gingerol, GEE and EMSCEE demonstrated significant and concentration-dependent inhibitory effects on ileal contraction in mice via M3 and 5-HT3 receptors in a noncompetitive manner. In addition, [6]-gingerol and EMSCEE tend to increase the LES tone. These results indicated the potential of GEE and EMSCEE to attenuate nausea and vomiting and might be used as nutraceuticals.

Abstract
The worldwide prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases is about 40%, with standard pharmacotherapy being long-lasting and economically challenging. Of the dozens of diseases listed by the Rome IV Foundation criteria, for five of them (heartburn, dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting disorder, constipation, and diarrhoea), treatment with herbals is an official alternative, legislatively supported by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). However, for most plants, the Directive does not require a description of the mechanisms of action, which should be related to the therapeutic effect of the European plant in question. This review article, therefore, summarizes the basic pharmacological knowledge of synthetic drugs used in selected functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and correlates them with the constituents of medicinal plants. Therefore, the information presented here is intended as a starting point to support the claim that both empirical folk medicine and current and decades-old treatments with official herbal remedies have a rational basis in modern pharmacology.

Abstract
Background Hyperemesis gravidarum is severe nausea and excessive vomiting, starting between 4 and 6 gestational weeks, peak at between 8 and 12 weeks and usually improve and subside by 20 weeks of pregnancy. Identifying the determinants of hyperemesis gravidarum has a particular importance for early detection and intervention to reduce the health, psychosocial and economic impact. In Ethiopia there is low information on determinants of hyperemesis gravidarum. Methods Institution based unmatched case-control study design was conducted from April 12- June 12, 2021. A structured face-to-face interviewer administered questionnaire and checklist for document review were used to collect the data from 360 study participants (120 cases and 240 controls). The data were collected by KoBocollect 1.3, and then exported to statistical package for social science version 25 for further analysis. Both bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression analysis were done to identify the determinants and a p-value < 0.05 with a 95% confidence level was used to declare statistical significance. Result Being an urban dweller (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.01, 4.34), having polygamous husband (AOR = 2.92, 95% CI: 1.27, 6.68), having history asthma/ other respiratory tract infections (AOR = 3.56, 95% CI: 1.43, 8.82), saturated fat intake (AOR = 4.06 95% CI: 1.98, 8.3), no intake of ginger (AOR = 3.04 95% CI: 1.14, 8.09), and inadequate intake of vitamin B rich foods (2.2, 95% CI: 1.14–4.2) were the determinants of hyperemesis gravidarum. Conclusion This study revealed that, urban residence, having polygamous husband, history of asthma/other respiratory tract infections, intake of saturated fat, no intake of ginger, inadequate intake of vitamin B reach foods were found to be independent determinants of hyperemesis gravidarum. It is better if healthcare providers and government authorities exert continual effort to give health education and counselling service concerning to dietary practice and asthma attacks. It is advisable if pregnant women adhere to healthy diets and limit intake of saturated fats and also husband and nearby relatives give care and support for pregnant women.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is a common and painful side effect that occurs in cancer patients receiving chemotherapeutic drugs. Although an abundance of agents are applied to prevent CINV, there is still lack of effective control in delayed nausea and vomiting. Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.), a traditional antiemetic herb, draws attention due to its therapeutic effect in treating acute and delayed CINV. Its main bioactive pungent constituents, gingerols, contribute to the antiemetic effect against CINV primarily. A growing number of reports have made progress in investigating the mechanisms of gingerols and their single ingredients against CINV. In this review, we searched for relevant studies in PubMed database to summarize the mechanism of gingerols in the prevention of CINV and provided a preliminary prediction on the potential targets and signaling pathways using network pharmacology, laying a foundation for further researches.

Abstract
Recently, the numbers of studies on natural products have considerably increased owing to their exceptional biological activities and health benefits. Their pharmacological attributes have played an immense role in detecting natural and safe alternative therapeutics, consequently extending their industrial applications. In this line, ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been gaining wide attention owing to its bioactive compounds, such as phenolic and terpene compounds. Ginger has a great pharmacological and biological potential in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, namely colds, nausea, arthritis, migraines and hypertension. However, these bioactive compounds are unstable and susceptible to degradation, volatilization and oxidation during extraction and processing, mainly owing to their exposure to environments with adverse conditions, such as high temperature, the presence of O2 and light. In this sense, this current review covers a wide range of topics, starting from the chemical profile and biological properties of ginger bioactive compounds (GBCs), their clinical effectiveness for the treatment of diseases and the application of different encapsulation methods (molecular inclusion, spray drying, complex coacervation, ionic strength and nanoemulsions) to protect and improve their application in food products. This work summarizes the fundamental principles of, recent progress in and effectiveness of different methods regarding the physicochemical, structural and functional properties of encapsulated GBCs. The potential use of encapsulated GBCs as a promising active ingredient to be applied in different food products is discussed in detail.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy affects almost all pregnant women and has a significant effect on quality of life, causing discomfort and interfering with daily activities, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. Pharmacological action to reduce hyperemesis is ginger. Ginger can work by blocking receptors serotonin and causing an antiemetic effect on the gastrointestinal system, thereby reducing nausea and vomiting.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of ginger herbal drink in reducing the level of hyperemesis gravidarum in first trimester pregnant women.
METHODS: Design This study used a Quasy Experimental with control group with a pre- and post-test approach. Samples were taken with the Consecutive sampling technique. The sample in this study was 96 respondents who were divided into two groups, namely 48 experimental groups and 48 control groups. Measurements used a pregnancy unique quantification of emesis and nausea questionnaire to measure the severity of nausea and vomiting in 24 h. Measurement of hyperemesis level was measured every day for 7 days of the experiment. Data analysis used Wilcoxon rank test and Mann Whitney.
RESULTS: The average level of hyperemesis gravidarum before the intervention of ginger herbal drink in the intervention group was 2.2083 and 2.2292 in the control group with p value = 0.806 which means there was no difference in the average frequency of hyperemesis gravidarum while after being given the intervention, the average level of hyperemesis gravidarum in the intervention group was 3.4375 and 2.2917 in the control group with p value = 0.000, which means that there is a difference in the average frequency level of hyperemesis gravidarum in the intervention group and the control group after being given the intervention.
CONCLUSION: Ginger drink given to pregnant women in the first trimester can reduce the level of hyperemesis so that pregnant women do not experience excessive nausea and vomiting. Ginger drinks can be recommended as an herbal treatment that can be consumed by pregnant women with hyperemesis gravidarum.

BACKGROUND Ginger is a spice with a long history of use as a traditional remedy for nausea and vomiting. No data on the efficacy of ginger are presently available for children with vomiting associated with acute gastroenteritis (AGE). AIM To test whether ginger can reduce vomiting in children with AGE. The primary outcome was the occurrence of ≥1 episode of vomiting after the first dose of treatment. Severity of vomiting and safety were also assessed. RESULTS Seventy-five children were randomised to the ginger arm and 75 to the placebo arm. Five children in the ginger arm and 4 in the placebo arm refused to participate in the study shortly after randomisation, leaving 70 children in the ginger arm and 71 in the placebo arm (N = 141). At intention-to-treat analysis (N = 150), assuming that all children lost to follow-up had reached the primary outcome, the incidence of the main outcome was 67% (95% CI 56 to 77) in the ginger group and 87% (95% CI 79 to 94) in the placebo group, corresponding to the absolute risk reduction for the ginger versus the placebo group of -20% (95% CI -33% to -7%, P = 0.003), with a number needed to treat of 5 (95% CI 3 to 15). CONCLUSION Oral administration of ginger is effective and safe at improving vomiting in children with AGE. Abstract
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe, family: Zingiberaceae), originating in South-East Asia, is one of the most used spices and condiments for foods and beverages. It is also used in traditional medicine for many human disorders including fever, gastrointestinal complications, arthritis, rheumatism, hypertension, and various infectious diseases due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiemetic properties. Intriguingly, many recent studies evidenced the potent chemopreventive characteristics of ginger extracts against different types of cancer. The aim of this work is to review the literature related to the use of ginger extracts as a chemotherapeutic agent and to structure the cellular and molecular mechanisms through which ginger acts in different cancer types. Data summarized from experiments (in vitro or in vivo) and clinical studies, evidenced in this review, show that ginger derivatives perpetrate its anti-tumor action through important mediators, involved in crucial cell processes, such as cell cycle arrest, induction of cancer cell death, misbalance of redox homeostasis, inhibition of cell proliferation, angiogenesis, migration, and dissemination of cancer cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the incidence and to evaluate risk factors for antineoplastic nausea and vomiting with high and moderate emetogenic chemotherapy in adult patients in the first treatment cycle. METHODS Prospective cohort study with follow-up of 269 adults during the first cycle of antineoplastic chemotherapy. The incidence of nausea and vomiting was evaluated in the acute phase (0-24 hours), in the late phase (24 hours-5th day) and in the total phase (0-5th day). RESULTS In total, 152 patients underwent high emetogenic chemotherapy and 117 moderate emetogenic chemotherapy. The relative frequency of nausea was higher when compared with vomiting in the acute phase (p < 0.001) and in the late phase (p < 0.001). The risk factors identified were: age group ≤ 49 years (odds ratio = 0.47; 95%CI 0.23-0.95) and 50-64 years (odds ratio = 0.45; 95%CI 0.23-0.87), tobacco use (odds ratio = 0.35; 95%CI 0.14-0.88), and high emetogenic chemotherapy (odds ratio 0.55; 95%CI 0.31-0.95). CONCLUSION The incidence of nausea was higher than that of vomiting, and adverse effects were more frequent in the late phase. The results suggest the risk factors for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting are tobacco, age (young adults), and high emetogenic chemotherapy.

Abstract
Improvements in Clinical Oncology, due to earlier diagnoses and more efficient therapeutic strategies, have led to increased numbers of long-term survivors, albeit many with chronic diseases. Dealing with the complex care needs of these survivors is now an important part of Medical Oncology. Suitable diet and physical activity regimes will be important in maintaining their health. This paper will review what we know and what we can do in the near future for these patients.

Abstract
Ginger is a widely consumed spice and possesses numerous pharmacological properties. However, studies addressing the efficacy of ginger in humans have been inconsistent. Many confounding factors need to be considered when evaluating the health effects from ginger against chronic diseases, especially the levels of bioactive components in the ginger formulations used in human trials. Gingerols, the major compounds in fresh ginger, are liable to dehydrate and convert to shogaols, the major compounds in dried ginger, as a result of the instability of β-hydroxyl ketone when exposed to heat and/or acidic conditions. As a result of various heating and processing methods, the concentrations of gingerols and shogaols in ginger products vary significantly. Increasing evidence has shown that gingerols and shogaols have different bioactivities, molecular targets, and metabolic pathways, suggesting the importance of identifying the optimal oral ginger composition for a specific disease. In this perspective, we highlighted differences in the composition between fresh ginger and dry ginger, bioactivities, molecular targets, and metabolic pathways of gingerols and shogaols as well as future perspectives regarding precision research on ginger.

Abstract
Monosodium glutamate is a sodium salt of a nonessential amino acid, L-glutamic acid, which is widely used in food industry. Glutamate plays an important role in principal brain functions including formation and stabilization of synapses, memory, cognition, learning, as well as cellular metabolism. However, ingestion of foodstuffs rich in monosodium glutamate can result in the outbreak of several health disorders such as neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, obesity and diabetes. The usage of medicinal plants and their natural products as a therapy against MSG used in food industry has been suggested to be protective. Calendula officinalis, Curcuma longa, Green Tea, Ginkgo biloba and vitamins are some of the main natural products with protective effect against mentioned monosodium glutamate toxicity through different mechanisms. This review provides a summary on the toxicity of monosodium glutamate and the protective effects of natural products against monosodium glutamate -induced toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify and discuss scientific evidence of the effects of ginger use on the management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. METHODS This is an integrative reviewperformed by Ganong's reference. RESULTS We included 24 studies, highlighting three thematic categories, namely 1) antiemetic action of ginger - nausea (13 articles; of these, nine significant) and emesis (10 studies; of these, six significant); 2) action in the control of nausea (11 articles; of these, six significant) and vomiting (8 articles; of these, three significant) in the acute phase; 3) action in the control of nausea (6 articles; of these, three significant) and vomiting (6 articles; of these, three significant) in the delayed phase. There were divergences of the methods used. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS This complementary therapy has low cost and easy access, but no statistical confirmation of its effectiveness in the management of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients was found.

Abstract
Declined food intake is prevalent among long-term care (LTC) residents with dementia and associated with deleterious health outcomes. This study explores food intake, nutritional status, and function and its associated factors in LTC residents with dementia. Data from 82 LTC residents with dementia were used in this secondary analysis. The majority of residents were either malnourished or at risk of being malnourished and demonstrated a worse appetite than previously described in the literature. Comorbid illness, depressed mood, and appetite were associated with 37.1% of the variance in food intake over 30 days. Dementia level and appetite were associated with 22.2% of the variance in nutritional status. Food intake and nutritional status were associated with 29.1% of the variance in function. This study also highlights a new demographic that may require extra assistance in combating declined food intake: LTC residents with dementia who reside in a facility that follows restrictive food practices such as a kosher diet. The potential reversibility of factors associated with food intake and nutritional status provides opportunities for intervention.

Abstract
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is widely consumed as an important spice or a common condiment in food and beverages. This study focuses on the determination of pungent and bioactive components in ginger and their antioxidant activity using voltammetric and spectroscopic methods. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis revealed that the major components of the pungent compounds were zingerone, shogaols, gingerols, paradols, wikstromol, and carinol. Using spectroscopic methods, the antioxidant capacity of ginger aqueous extract was found to be 16.0 μmol gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per gram of ginger extract, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content was estimated to be 7.8 mg GAE/g ginger extract and 15.4 mg Quercetin equivalent (QE) per gram of ginger extract, respectively. Electroanalytical quantification estimated the antioxidant capacity of the ginger infusion to be 23.5 μmol GAE/g ginger extract, which is slightly higher than that estimated using chemical assay. The results may provide useful information for the development of ginger processing and utilization as a flavoring agent, and for our understanding of ginger as a source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Oxidative stress plays an essential role in ulcerative colitis (UC) initiation and severity. We aimed to investigate the effect of ginger as a well-known antioxidant agent on the quality of life, disease activity index and oxidative stress in patients with UC. METHODS Forty six patients with active mild to moderate UC randomly assigned to consume 2000 mg/day dried ginger powder in 4 capsules or similar placebo capsules for 12 weeks. Disease activity index, quality of life and some oxidative stress factors were measured before, at the middle and at the end of the intervention through valid and reliable questionnaires and blood sampling. RESULTS Ginger reduced Malondialdehyde (MDA) significantly after 6 weeks (p = 0.003) and 12 weeks (p < 0.001) of intervention, whereas it did not affect serum total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC). The scores of severity of disease activity at 12th week was significantly improved in ginger group in comparison to placebo (p = 0.017). Moreover, ginger increased patients quality of life significantly at 12th week (p = 0.039). CONCLUSION Our data indicate that ginger supplementation can improve treatment of patients with UC. Further clinical trials with different dosages and duration of ginger or its standard extract supplementation are needed to obtain firm conclusion.

Abstract
Ginger, the rhizome of Zingiber officinale, which is used as a spice globally has a long history of medicinal use that stimulates investigators to assess its potential roles as an adjuvant therapy or alternative medicine in a range of diseases. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, and antiulcer effects of ginger have been proven in many scientific studies, and some of the ancient applications of ginger as a home remedy has been confirmed in human. In this review, we summarized the current evidence on the effects of ginger consumption on gastrointestinal disorders based on clinical trials. Our data indicate that divided lower daily dosage of 1500 mg ginger is beneficial for nausea relief. Because of limited number of studies on some other gastrointestinal disorders, the results may not be as much powered as to find significant results. Therefore, more extensive and well-controlled human studies of ginger or its standard extracts are required to demonstrate its efficacy as a gastroprotective agent. Dose-finding studies should be undertaken to accurately determine the effective dose and preparation of ginger in further clinical trials protocol.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects and the mechanisms of ginger extract intake in the adiposity gain, metabolic and inflammatory disturbances induced by a high-refined carbohydrate (HC) diet in mice. Ginger extract at doses of 200, 600, and 1800 mg/kg was supplemented in the daily food of obese Balb/c mice during an 8-week experiment. Our findings indicate that consumption of high doses of ginger extracts prevents the increase of adiposity induced by HC diet, improves lipid profile, and promotes decrease of inflammatory markers in mice. We showed that ginger addition to HC diet leads to decrease in the recruitment of cells visualized in vivo in the microvasculature of adipose tissue, decrease of inflammatory cytokines, and increase of adiponectin serum levels. These results indicate that the consumption of ginger decreases the negative metabolic consequences induced by HC diet.

Abstract
Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) is a common problem for pregnant women. Researchers have recently paid special attention to complementary medicine methods for the treatment of NVP. Regarding the high prevalence of NVP as well as maternal and fetal adverse effects of chemical drugs, the present study, focusing on clinical trials carried out in Iran, was conducted to assess safety and efficacy of different nonpharmacological methods in relieving NVP. This systematic review focused on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and assessed complementary medicine on NVP for which databases including MedLib, Magiran, Iran Medex, SID, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar search engines from 2000 to 2015 were searched. Those articles that gained score 3 or higher, according to Jadad criteria, were recruited for the study. In this study, 31 clinical trials assessing NVP were conducted on Iranian pregnant women. After removing ten articles, 21 articles with scores 3 and higher, according to Jedad criteria, were assessed. Out of 21 papers, 10 papers were about ginger, one was about cardamom, one was about lemon, two were about peppermint aromatherapy, six were about pericardium 6 (P6) acupressure, and one article about KID21 acupressure. Most studies have demonstrated a positive effect on reducing NVP; however, no adverse effect was reported. According to the results of this review, the majority of methods employed were effective in reducing the incidence of NVP, among which ginger and P6 acupressure can be recommended with more reliability.

Abstract
The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widespread among adults in the United States to self-treat a range of disorders, including gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. This study determined the self-reported use of CAM, including dietary supplements, in managing GI symptoms among Internet users and investigated perceived effects of supplement use on GI symptoms. We used a cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design. A Qualtrics online survey was utilized to collect data through various websites. Focused areas include demographics, health evaluation, health issue(s), supplement and CAM use, and GI symptoms. Of the participants included in the study, a majority (88%) were women and half (50.1%) were between the ages of 26 and 45. Most participants (84.5%) reported use of herbal supplements, and 84.8% of the participants used herbal supplements for a specific health problem. The most common reported health condition was gastroesophageal reflux (44.4%). The attrition rate was low at 22%. The novelty of using an anonymous online survey to collect data on supplement use in GI disorders indicated a high prevalence of dietary and herbal supplement use among persons with GI disorders comparable to previous reports. Health-care providers should ask patients about supplement use in addition to prescribed medications and communicate effectively if conventional pharmacotherapy is not sufficient to manage symptoms or patients are inclined to use supplements.

Abstract
Ginger, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, is increasingly consumed as a food or in food supplements. It is also recognized as a popular nonpharmacological treatment for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). However, its consumption is not recommended by all countries for pregnant women. Study results are heterogeneous and conclusions are not persuasive enough to permit heath care professionals to recommend ginger safely. Some drugs are also contraindicated, leaving pregnant women with NVP with few solutions. We conducted a review to assess effectiveness and safety of ginger consumption during early pregnancy. Systematic literature searches were conducted on Medline (via Pubmed) until the end of December 2017. For the evaluation of efficacy, only double-blind, randomized, controlled trials were included. For the evaluation of the safety, controlled, uncontrolled, and pre-clinical studies were included in the review. Concerning toxicity, none can be extrapolated to humans from in vitro results. In vivo studies do not identify any major toxicities. Concerning efficacy and safety, a total of 15 studies and 3 prospective clinical studies have been studied. For 1 g of fresh ginger root per day for four days, results show a significant decrease in nausea and vomiting and no risk for the mother or her future baby. The available evidence suggests that ginger is a safe and effective treatment for NVP. However, beyond the ginger quantity needed to be effective, ginger quality is important from the perspective of safety.

Abstract
6-Gingerol (6-Gin), an active constituent of Zingiber officinale, has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-cancerous etc. bioactivities. However, little is known about its endothelial protective effects and the underlying mechanisms. In this study, our purpose was to investigate the protective effects of 6-Gin and its underlying mechanisms. HUVECs were exposed to high glucose (HG, 33mM glucose) for 48h, followed by 50μM 6-Gin with or without LY294002 (10μM), AKT inhibitor IV (0.5μM) or L-NAME (5mM) for another 24h. Cell viability, levels of NO, LDH and ROS were detected. In addition, the expression levels of IKK, IRS-1, PI3K, AKT, eNOS and their phosphorylated proteins were measured by western blots. Compared with the control, HUVECs were significantly impaired by HG, characterized by decreased levels of the cell viability, NO, pY458-PI3K, pS473-AKT and pS1177-eNOS while increased levels of LDH, pS176-IKK, and p-S312-IRS-1. Conversely, 6-Gin remarkably protected HUVECs against HG-induced injury in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. However, the protective effects of 6-Gin were abolished by co-treatment with LY294002, AKT inhibitor IV or L-NAME at the HG state. Collectively, 6-Gin attenuated the injury of HUVECs induced by HG through the activation of PI3K-AKT-eNOS signal pathway. The findings provide a novel potential for 6-Gin to prevent and treat the angiopathy resulting from diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to examine the antioxidant activity of ginger extract oral supplement in newly diagnosed cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy compared to placebo. Patients and methods Newly diagnosed cancer patients receiving moderate-to-high emetogenic potential adjuvant chemotherapy were randomized to receive either a ginger extract (standardized 6-gingerol 20 mg/day) or a placebo 3 days prior to chemotherapy, which they continued daily. Oxidant/antioxidant parameters, including the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) and levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), total glutathione (GSH/GSSG), lipid peroxidation products detected as malondialdehyde (MDA) and NO2−/NO3−, were measured at baseline and at days 1, 22, 43 and 64 after undergoing chemotherapy. Two-sided statistical analysis, with P < 0.05, was used to determine statistical significance. Results A total of 43 patients were included in the study: 19 and 24 patients were randomly assigned to the ginger group and placebo group, respectively. Antioxidant activity parameters, including SOD, CAT, GPx and GSH/GSSG, were significantly increased at day 64 in the ginger group compared to those in the placebo group, while MDA and NO2−/NO3− levels were significantly decreased (P < 0.0001). When compared to the baseline, the activities of SOD and CAT and the levels of GPx and GSH/GSSG were significantly higher on day 64 (P = 0.01), while the blood levels of MDA and NO2−/NO3− were significantly decreased (P < 0.01). Conclusion Daily supplement of ginger extract started 3 days prior to chemotherapy has been shown to significantly elevate antioxidant activity and reduce oxidative marker levels in patients who received moderate-to-high emetogenic potential chemotherapy compared to placebo.

Abstract
We demonstrate the potential of electrochemical detection for the analysis of the 'strength' of ginger in ginger sample. This facile and fast detection method is aimed at the quality control in food industry. Specifically, we report adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdsSV) as a technique for detection of gingerol compounds, the pungent components of ginger rhizome. Among the gingerols, 6-gingerol is the most abundant and is chosen as a model to characterise the behaviour of a wider range of related compounds. Multiwalled carbon nanotube modified basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrodes (MWCNT-BPPG electrode) are employed to enhance the sensitivity of the measurement. A linearity range from 1 μM to 50 μM with limit of detection of 0.21 μM and limit of quantification of 0.71 μM is obtained. Further, the simple and rapid extraction procedure by simply vortexing the ginger sample with ethanol is developed for extraction of gingerol related species.
