Prevalence of Burnout Among Respiratory Therapists Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

Psychometric properties and development of a structured questionnaire to assess the perception, attitude, and job satisfaction among respiratory therapists

Background

Over the past ten years, significant transformations have occurred in the healthcare landscape, presenting respiratory therapists (RTs) with a mix of challenges and opportunities. Hence, their perceptions about career progression and job satisfaction will be critical factor in determining the recruitment and retention of RTs. However, there are no studies in the literature that comprehensively assessed these aspects using a reliable and valid measure specific to RTs. Our objective was to develop and psychometrically test a Standardized Questionnaire (SQ) for evaluating RT's overall job satisfaction.

Methods

Following consultations with experts and interviews conducted with RTs, a preliminary questionnaire was devised for the purpose of exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The 49 items of the Structured Questionnaire (SQ) were used for verification of the theorized factor structure and content validity using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for the global fit were done. Cronbach's alpha was performed to estimate the internal consistency. The samples of RTs were collected from India between August 2021 and January 2022.

Results

A convenience sample comprising 409 respiratory therapists (RTs) employed in India participated in the survey conducted from June 2021 to January 2022. The exploratory factor analysis revealed three factors that explained 61.2 % of the total variance. The confirmatory factor analysis yielded a 3-factor structure (X2/df = 4.4, p < 0.02, standardized root-mean-square residual = 0.05, goodness of fit index = 0.94, comparative fit index = 0.98). The Cronbach's alpha was 0.94 for the total scale.

Conclusions

Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) are becoming more prevalent, especially in the development and psychometric evaluation of instruments. This Structured Questionnaire is a reliable and valid tool that has utility for assessing perceptions, satisfaction, and attitude among Respiratory Therapists and for making comparisons of similar psychometric measures.

Exploring knowledge gaps and research needs in respiratory therapy: a qualitative description study

Background

Respiratory therapists (RTs) are expected to stay updated on technology, treatments, research, and best practices to provide high-quality patient care. They must possess the skills to interpret, evaluate, and contribute to evidence-based practices. However, RTs often rely on research from other professions that may not fully address their specific needs, leading to insufficient guidance for their practice. Additionally, there has been no exploration of knowledge gaps and research needs from RTs' perspectives to enhance their practice and patient outcomes. The research questions guiding this study were: (i) what are the perceived practice-oriented knowledge gaps? and (ii) what are the necessary research priorities across the respiratory therapy profession according to experts in respiratory therapy?

Methods

A qualitative description study was conducted using semi-structured focus groups with 40 expert RTs from seven areas of practice across Canada. Data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Results

We identified four major themes relating to what these experts perceive as the practice-oriented gaps and necessary research priorities across the respiratory therapy profession: 1) system-level impact of RTs, 2) optimizing respiratory therapy practices, 3) scholarship on the respiratory therapy profession and 4) respiratory therapy education.

Discussion

The findings establish a fundamental understanding of the current gaps and the specific needs of RTs that require further investigation. Participants strongly emphasized the significance of research priorities that consider the breadth and depth of the respiratory therapy profession, which underscores the complex nature of respiratory therapy and its application in practice.

Conclusion

The unique insights garnered from this study highlight the knowledge gaps and research needs specific to RTs. These findings pave the way for further exploration, discourse, and research aimed at understanding the specific contributions and requirements of RTs.

The prevalence of burnout among pulmonologists or respiratory therapists pre- and post-COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

The coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) increased the already heavy workload in the pulmonary and respiratory departments, which therefore possibly increased the prevalence of burnout among pulmonologists or respiratory therapists. We aimed to compare the differences in burnout among pulmonologists or respiratory therapists pre- and post-COVID-19 by doing a systematic review with meta-analysis.

METHODS

We searched pulmonologist, or pulmonary, or respiratory, and burnout up to 29 January 2023 in six databases. We included studies investigating pulmonologists or respiratory therapists and reporting the prevalence of burnout among them. The risk of bias was assessed by a tool for prevalence studies. The overall prevalence of burnout was pooled.

RESULTS

A total of 2859 records were identified and 16 studies were included in the final analysis. The included studies reported 3610 responding individuals and 2336 burnouts. The pooled prevalence of burnout was 61.7% (95% confidence interval (CI), 48.6-73.2%; I² = 96.3%). The pooled prevalence of burnout during COVID-19 was significantly higher than it was prior to the outbreak (68.4% vs. 41.6%, p = .01). The result of the meta-regression revealed that COVID-19 coverage was significantly associated with the prevalence of burnout (p = .04).

CONCLUSIONS

Burnout was widely prevalent among pulmonologists or respiratory therapists and increasingly perceived during COVID-19. A replication study of a psychotherapy incorporating horses resiliency intervention for healthcare workers

OBJECTIVES

The first aim of this pilot observational study was to replicate a previous study of a resiliency psychotherapy incorporating horses (PIH) intervention for healthcare workers. The second aim was to address some gaps in the literature regarding equine-assisted services more broadly.

DESIGN

Prospective open trial.

SETTING

A large healthcare system and a community equine facility INTERVENTION: A single-session four-hour intervention that focused on participants resilience.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Safety, feasibility, and utilization were assessed, and psychological instruments were administered. Instruments utilized were the Positive and Negative Affect Scale the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II, and the Conner-Davidson Resiliency Scale.

RESULTS

Thirty-eight subjects participated in the study, the majority of which were female (71.1 %). The age group with the most representation included those ranging from age 25-34. The intervention was safe but underutilized. Participation was associated with improved psychological flexibility (PF), and positive affect, as well as reduction in negative affect pre- to post-intervention. There was no change in resiliency and there were no associations between improvements in affect and PF.

CONCLUSIONS

Resiliency PIH interventions for healthcare workers can be utilized safely and likely result in short-term psychological benefits for participants. Future randomized controlled investigations are warranted, and these studies should implement methods to maximize utilization. Additionally, this study and the literature suggest that enhanced affect and PF are likely important EAS outcomes across a variety of interventions. These constructs should be investigated with more rigorous studies including comparisons of interventions with and without a psychotherapy component.

Evaluation of a Telehealth-Enabled Pilot Program to Address Intensive Care Unit Health Care Worker Mental Health Distress

Introduction

Health care workers (HCWs) are at heightened risk of adverse mental health events (AMHEs) and burnout with resultant impact on health care staffing, outcomes, and costs. We piloted a telehealth-enabled mental health screening and support platform among HCWs in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting at a tertiary care center.

Methods

A survey consisting of validated screening tools was electronically disseminated to a potential cohort of 178 ICU HCWs. Participants were given real-time feedback on their results and those at risk were provided invitations to meet with resiliency clinicians. Participants were further invited to engage in a 3-month longitudinal assessment of their well-being through repeat surveys and a weekly text-based check-in coupled with self-help tips. Programmatic engagement was evaluated and associations between at-risk scores and engagement were assessed. Qualitative input regarding programmatic uptake and acceptance was gathered through key informant interviews.

Results

Fifty (28%) HCWs participated in the program. Half of the participants identified as female, and most participants were white (74%) and under the age of 50 years (93%). Nurses (38%), physicians-in-training (24%), and faculty-level physicians (20%) engaged most frequently. There were 19 (38%) requests for an appointment with a resiliency clinician. The incidence of clinically significant symptoms of AMHEs and burnout was high but not clearly associated with engagement. Additional programmatic tailoring was encouraged by key informants while time was identified as a barrier to program engagement.

Discussion

A telehealth-enabled platform is a feasible approach to screening at-risk HCWs for AMHEs and can facilitate engagement with support services.

Characterizing the mental health and functioning of Canadian respiratory therapists during the COVID-19 pandemic

Introduction: Healthcare professionals (HCPs) appear to be at increased risk for negative psychological outcomes [e.g. depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), moral distress] and associated impacts on functioning throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. HCPs working on designated COVID-19 units may be further impacted than their colleagues not on these units given added demands of patient care and risk of contracting COVID-19. Little is known, however, about the mental health and functioning of specific professional groups beyond nurses and physicians, including respiratory therapists (RTs), over the course of the pandemic. Accordingly, the purpose of the present study was to characterize the mental health and functioning of Canadian RTs and compare profiles between RTs working on and off designated COVID-19 units.Methods: Canadian RTs completed an online survey between February and June 2021, including demographic information (e.g. age, sex, gender,) and measures of depression, anxiety, stress, PTSD, moral distress and functional impairment. Descriptive statistics, correlation analyses and between-groups comparisons were conducted to characterize RTs and compare profiles between those on and off COVID-19 units.Results: Two hundred and eighteen (N = 218) RTs participated in this study. The estimated response rate was relatively low (6.2%) Approximately half of the sample endorsed clinically relevant symptoms of depression (52%), anxiety (51%) and stress (54%) and one in three (33%) screened positively for potential PTSD. All symptoms correlated positively with functional impairment (p's < .05). RTs working on COVID-19 units reported significantly greater patient-related moral distress compared to those not on these units (p < .05).Conclusion: Moral distress and symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and PTSD were prevalent among Canadian RTs and were associated with functional impacts. These results must be interpreted with caution given a low response rate, yet raise concern regarding the long-term impacts of pandemic service among RTs.

The relationship between physical activity and burnout among respiratory therapists in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia

Background/objective

Burnout is a condition in which a person feels physically fatigued and mentally drained. It occurs after a long period of work-related stress and may lead to mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Therefore, healthcare providers especially require early intervention. Regular physical activity has been reported to benefit individuals with mental illness, suggesting that a relationship between physical activity and burnout might exist. Hence, this study's objective was to analyze the relationship between physical activity and burnout among respiratory therapists and student interns in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia.

Methods

A cross-sectional descriptive study with respiratory therapists and interns working in public and private hospitals was conducted from November 2, 2020, to November 27, 2020. Participants responded to an electronic survey consisting of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel, which measures the burnout dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. They also completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Long Form and a demographic questionnaire.

Results

Among the 250 eligible respiratory therapists and interns, data from the 152 respondents who completed the electronic survey were analyzed. Although no association between physical activity and burnout was found, a significant effect of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on physical activity and significant associations of high burnout (emotional exhaustion) with nationality and smoking were found.

Conclusion

No association was found between burnout level and physical activity. Confounding factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic during the study's data collection and analyses, likely contributed to the study's findings.

Coronavirus disease 2019 aftermath: psychological trauma in ICU healthcare workers

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

We aim to describe the extent of psychological trauma and moral distress in healthcare workers (HCW) working in the intensive care unit (ICU) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Specifically, we review reports on prevalence of mental health symptoms, highlight vulnerable populations and summarize modifiable risk factors associated with mental health symptoms in ICU HCW.

RECENT FINDINGS

The pandemic has resulted in a multitude of closely intertwined professional and personal challenges for ICU HCW. High rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (14-47%), burnout (45-85%), anxiety (31-60%), and depression (16-65%) have been reported, and these mental health symptoms are often interrelated. Most studies suggest that nurses and female HCW are at highest risk for developing mental health symptoms. The main personal concerns associated with reporting mental health symptoms among ICU HCW were worries about transmitting COVID-19 to their families, worries about their own health, witnessing colleagues contract the disease, and experiencing stigma from their communities. Major modifiable work-related risk factors were experiencing poor communication from supervisors, perceived lack of support from administrative leadership, and concerns about insufficient access to personal protective equipment, inability to rest, witnessing hasty end-of-life decisions, and restriction of family visitation policies.

SUMMARY

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted ICU HCW worldwide. The psychological trauma, manifesting as posttraumatic stress disorder, burnout, anxiety, and depression, is substantial and concerning. Urgent action by lawmakers and healthcare administrators is required to protect ICU HCW and sustain a healthy workforce.

Burnout and Resilience among Respiratory Therapy (RT) Students during Clinical Training in Saudi Arabia: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

The epidemic of burnout has been widely documented among health discipline students. However, there is limited information available on the prevalence of burnout and its association with resilience among clinical-level respiratory therapy (RT) students.

METHODS

Between March 2022 and May 2022, a descriptive, cross-sectional study using a convenience sample of RT students and interns was conducted. A total of 559 RT students and interns from 15 RT programs responded to socio-demographic questions and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and correlation tests.

RESULTS

Of the 559 respondents, 78% reported a high level of burnout. Within the three subscales of burnout, 52% reported emotional exhaustion (EE), 59% reported depersonalization (DP), and 55% reported low personal achievement (PA). The prevalence of burnout increased as students proceeded to senior years (p = 0.006). In addition, participants with higher grade point averages (GPA) reported a higher level of burnout. Only 2% of the respondents reported a high level of resiliency. Further, there were negative correlations between resilience and EE (r = -41, p < 0.001) and DP (r = -32, p = 0.03), and a positive correlation with low PA (r = 0.56, p = 0.002).

CONCLUSION

The findings showed a high prevalence of burnout among RT students and interns during clinical training in Saudi Arabia. Resilience was associated with all domains of burnout and is likely to play a protective role. Therefore, there is a need for collaborative interventions to promote resiliency during clinical training to alleviate and overcome burnout symptoms.

Factors Associated With a Positive View of Respiratory Care Leadership

BACKGROUND

Burnout within health care is prevalent, and its effects are detrimental to patient outcomes, organizations, and individuals. Effects stemming from burnout include anxiety, depression, excessive alcohol and drug use, cardiovascular problems, time off work, and worse patient outcomes. Published data have suggested up to 50% of health care workers experience burnout and 79% of respiratory therapists (RTs) experience burnout. Leadership has been cited as a key driver of burnout among RTs. We aimed to identify factors associated with a positive or negative leadership perception.

METHODS

A post hoc analysis of an institutional review board-approved survey to evaluate RT burnout, administered via REDCap by convenience sample to 26 health care centers (3,124 potential respondents) from January 17-March 15, 2021, was performed to identify factors associated with a positive view of leadership. Survey questions included validated tools to measure leadership, burnout, staffing, COVID-19 exposure, and demographics. Data analysis was descriptive, and logistic regression was performed to evaluate factors associated with leadership perception.

RESULTS

Of 1,080 respondents, 710 (66%) had a positive view of leadership. Univariate analysis revealed those with a positive view of leadership were more likely to be working with adequate staffing, were rarely unable to complete all work, were less likely to be burned out, disagreed that people in this work environment were burned out, were less likely to miss work for any reason, more likely to be in a leadership position, worked fewer hours in intensive care, worked in a center affiliated with a medical school, worked day shift, were less likely to care for adult patients, and were more likely to be male. Logistic regression revealed providing care to patients with COVID-19 (odds ratio [OR] 5.8-10.5, P < .001-.006) was the only factor associated with a positive view of leadership, whereas working without adequate staffing (OR 0.27-0.28, P = .002-.006), staff RTs (OR 0.33, P < .001), work environment (OR 0.42, P = .003), missing work for any reason (OR 0.69, P = .003), and burnout score (OR 0.98, P < .001) were associated with a negative view of leadership.

CONCLUSIONS

Most RTs had a positive view of their leadership. A negative leadership score was associated with higher burnout and missing work. This relationship requires further investigation to evaluate if changes in leadership practices can improve employee well-being and reduce burnout.

A pilot observational study of a psychotherapy incorporating equines resiliency intervention for staff at a large medical center

BACKGROUND

and purpose: Stress and burnout among healthcare workers are significant public health concerns. The primary aim of this pilot study was to conduct preliminary assessments of safety, feasibility, and participant satisfaction with a psychotherapy incorporating equines (PIE)-based resiliency intervention for healthcare workers. The overarching goal was to lay the groundwork for future, more rigorous investigations. Lastly, a very preliminary assessment of using the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQII) to assess for changes in psychological flexibility (PF) associated with PIE was conducted.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-seven staff members from a medical center participated in a 4-h PIE-based resiliency retreat. Pre- and post-intervention instruments were utilized to assess participants' self-perception of physical and psychological health (PROMIS Global Short Form) and enjoyment of (Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale) and satisfaction with (Client Satisfaction Questionnaire) the intervention, as well as changes in PF (AAQII).

RESULTS

There were no adverse effects on participants, staff, or equines. Preliminary results suggested that the intervention was perceived as enjoyable by participants. However, the intervention was not fully utilized. Finally, there was a significant (p = 0.02) pre-to post-intervention change in AAQII scores.

CONCLUSION

This study provides a foundation for future rigorous studies of PIE-based resiliency interventions for medical staff. Given the limitations of this pilot work, firm conclusions cannot be drawn regarding safety and feasibility. However, the preliminary results suggest that future studies of this intervention are warranted and that the AAQII may be a useful instrument to assess for possible changes in PF.

Perceptions of Critical Care Shortages, Resource Use, and Provider Well-being During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Survey of 1,985 Health Care Providers in Brazil

BACKGROUND

Brazil has been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, placing a high burden on ICUs.

RESEARCH QUESTION

Are perceptions of ICU resource availability associated with end-of-life decisions and burnout among health care providers (HCPs) during COVID-19 surges in Brazil?

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS

We electronically administered a survey to multidisciplinary ICU HCPs during two 2-week periods (in June 2020 and March 2021) coinciding with COVID-19 surges. We examined responses across geographical regions and performed multivariate regressions to explore factors associated with reports of: (1) families being allowed less input in decisions about maintaining life-sustaining treatments for patients with COVID-19 and (2) emotional distress and burnout.

RESULTS

We included 1,985 respondents (57% physicians, 14% nurses, 12% respiratory therapists, 16% other HCPs). More respondents reported shortages during the second surge compared with the first (P < .05 for all comparisons), including lower availability of intensivists (66% vs 42%), ICU nurses (53% vs 36%), ICU beds (68% vs 22%), and ventilators for patients with COVID-19 (80% vs 70%); shortages were highest in the North. One-quarter of HCPs reported that families were allowed less input in decisions about maintaining life-sustaining treatments for patients with COVID-19, which was associated with lack of intensivists (adjusted relative risk [aRR], 1.37; 95% CI, 1.05-1.80) and ICU beds (aRR, 1.71; 95% CI, 1.16-2.62) during the first surge and lack of N95 masks (aRR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.10-1.85), noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (aRR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.18-2.07), and oxygen concentrators (aRR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.13-2.00) during the second surge. Burnout was higher during the second surge (60% vs 71%; P < .001), associated with witnessing colleagues at one's hospital contract COVID-19 during both surges (aRR, 1.55 [95% CI, 1.25-1.93] and 1.31 [95% CI, 1.11-1.55], respectively), as well as worries about finances (aRR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.02-1.61) and lack of ICU nurses (aRR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.02-1.53) during the first surge.

INTERPRETATION

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ICU HCPs in Brazil experienced substantial resource shortages, health care disparities between regions, changes in end-of-life care associated with resource shortages, and high proportions of burnout.

Building Individual and Organizational Wellness Through Effective Followership

Burnout is widespread across the healthcare industry. Physician burnout has been linked to significant decrements in personal wellness, patient satisfaction, patient outcomes, and organizational financial losses. Appropriately, burnout has been identified as an important issue for leaders in the field as it can lead to physician turnover and loss of talent. In this article, we address how burnout is related to followership. We assert that physicians can utilize effective followership to increase wellness not only for themselves, but also for their leaders and organizations.

Burnout among Respiratory Therapists and Perception of Leadership: A Cross Sectional Survey Over Eight Intensive Care Units

Background

Burnout syndrome (BOS) is a job-related stress disorder featured by three main cardinal manifestations: emotional exhaustion (EE), reduced personal accomplishment (PA), and depersonalization (DP).

Aim

We aimed to report the prevalence of burnout and the impact of leadership and work condition on the burnout among respiratory therapists (RT) are front-line practitioners in many critical settings.

Methods

We surveyed RT in eight intensive care units (ICU) at five tertiary hospitals, under one medical corporation, using three instruments: the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel, Condition of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire (CWEQ), and Leadership behaviours scale. We used a group of other health care practitioners (ie, physicians and nurses) as the control group.

Results

Of a sampling frame of 1222 ICU practitioners, 445 (36.4%) responded with completed surveys. Eighty-four (17.3%) and 361 (82.7%) participants were in the RT and the control group, respectively. The overall burnout score was significantly lower in the RT group (53.6% vs. 67%, p = 0.02). The EE and DP scores were significantly lower in the RT group [(26.2% vs. 37.7, p = 0.048) and (9.5% vs. 19.9%, p = 0.025), respectively], but the PA score did not show significant difference between the groups. A significant negative relationship was found between CWEQ score and both EE and DP scores (rs = −0. 0.557, p < 0.001) and (rs = −0.372, p < 0.001), respectively, while a significant positive correlation was found between CWEQ and the PA score (rs = 0.225, p < 0.042). A significant negative relationship was found between the leadership attitude and EE scores (rs = −0.414, p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The results of this study suggest a high burnout rate among RT. The reported rate was significantly correlated to work conditions and leadership behaviours. Organizational efforts should be directed to combating burnout through the identification and adequate management of the key precipitating factors.

COVID-19 pandemic: the impact on Canada’s intensive care units

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the precarious demand-capacity balance in Canadian hospitals, including critical care where there is an urgent need for trained health care professionals to dramatically increase ICU capacity.

The impact of the pandemic on ICUs varied significantly across the country with provinces that implemented public health measures later and relaxed them sooner being impacted more severely. Pediatric ICUs routinely admitted adult patients. Non-ICU areas were converted to ICUs and staff were redeployed from other essential service areas. Faced with a lack of critical care capacity, triage plans for ICU admission were developed and nearly implemented in some provinces.

Twenty eight percent of patients in Canadian ICUs who required mechanical ventilation died. Surviving patients have required prolonged ICU admission, hospitalization and extensive ongoing rehabilitation. Family members of patients were not permitted to visit, resulting in additional psychological stresses to patients, families, and healthcare teams. ICU professionals also experienced extreme psychological stresses from caring for such large numbers of critically ill patients, often in sub-standard conditions. This resulted in large numbers of health workers leaving their professions.

This pandemic is not yet over, and it is likely that new pandemics will follow. A review and recommendations for the future are provided.

Influence of Mutual Support on Burnout among Intensive Care Unit Healthcare Professionals

Introduction

Burnout among healthcare professionals in intensive care units (ICUs) is a serious issue that leads to early retirement and medication errors. Their gender, lower years of experience, and lower education have been reported as risk factors. Simultaneously, mutual support—commonly referred to as “back-up behavior,” in which staff members support each other—is critical for team performance. However, little is known about the influence of mutual support among ICU healthcare professionals on burnout. The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality refers to mutual support as the involvement of team members in: assisting one another, providing and receiving feedback, and exerting assertive and advocacy behaviors when patient safety is threatened.

Objective

This study aimed to verify the hypothesis that lower mutual support among ICU healthcare professionals is associated with increased probability of burnout.

Methods

A web-based survey was conducted from March 4 to 20, 2021. All ICU healthcare professionals in Japan were included. An invitation was sent via the mailing list of the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine and asked to mail to local communities and social network services. We measured burnout severity using the Maslach Burnout-Human Services Survey and mutual support using the TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire, as well as occupational background. The cutoff value for burnout was predefined and conducted logistic regression.

Results

We received 335 responses, all of which were analyzed. The majority of respondents were nurses (58.5%), followed by physicians (18.5%) and clinical engineers (10.1%). The burnout group scored significantly lower on mutual support than the non-burnout group. After adjusting for covariates in a logistic regression, low mutual support was an independent factor predicting a high probability of burnout.

Conclusions

This study suggests that it is important to focus on mutual support among ICU healthcare professionals to reduce the frequency of burnout.
