Abstract
Background Impulsivity plays a fundamental role in the realm of addiction as is considered a risk factor for addiction. Moreover, it influences the age of onset, severity, and therapeutic management of addictions. The aim of this study was to explore measures of impulsivity in a cohort of male and female diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and contrast these findings with those from a group with Alcohol and Cocaine Use Disorder (ACUD). Methodology A total of 204 patients (153 men and 51 women) underwent evaluation using Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), Barrat Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire (ZKPQ), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results A total of 24.6% of the sample (21.9% AUD group and 32.2% ACUD group) screened positive for ADHD. Differences were observed in Total Impulsivity (T(199) =-2.587, p=.010), with the mean score being higher in the ACUD group. Gender differences were noted with ADHD exhibiting a significant explanatory power for impulsivity (greater than 37%) in women compared to men, where its relevance is minimal. Among women, an inverse relationship was found between impulsivity and activity and sociability, in contrast to men, where the inverse relationship was with intolerance to isolation. Both men and women showed associations between ADHD and elevated levels of anxiety and depression. Study limitations and practical implications are discussed. Conclusions Although this is an observational study and should be develop a longitudinal study, we detected that the presence of ADHD in addicted women significantly influences impulsivity and should be systematically assessed due to the differences in the clinical approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotion dysregulation commonly co-occurs with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), leading to a range of negative outcomes. While psychological interventions have shown promise in bringing about positive changes in emotional and cognitive domains, there is still limited knowledge on the subjective experiences of change among the participants in these interventions. AIM The present study explores the experiences of adults with ADHD who had participated in a blended digital and face-to-face intervention aimed at improving emotion dysregulation. The study focuses on understanding their experiences of change and identifying contributors to change. METHODS A total of 9 adults with ADHD participated in individual semi-structured, in-depth interviews following their participation in the intervention. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The thematic analysis resulted in three core themes. The first theme, 'perceiving change', represents changes that the participants experienced, with four subthemes: 1a) being in control, 1b) feeling aware, 1c) accepting oneself and one's emotions and 1d) gaining insight and knowledge. The second theme, 'supporting change', captures factors that supported the participants' changes, with five subthemes: 2a) acquiring skills, 2b) being in it together, 2c) therapist guidance, 2d) finding motivation 2e) putting it into practice. Lastly, the third theme, 'sustaining change', includes aspects important to maintain change, with two subthemes: 3a) working consistently and 3b) giving it time. CONCLUSIONS The findings show that the participants experienced various changes related to the management of their emotions following their participation in the intervention. Change was perceived as a multifaceted process, supported by internal factors such as motivation and engagement, along with external factors such as support from the other group members and the therapists. Taken together, the findings from the study could be important to the development of psychological interventions for adults with ADHD and may provide valuable knowledge to clinicians and policymakers. Abstract
Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (aADHD) represents a heterogeneous entity incorporating different subgroups in terms of symptomatology, course, and neurocognition. Although neurocognitive dysfunction is generally associated with aADHD, its severity, association with self-reported symptoms, and differences between subtypes remain unclear. We investigated 61 outpatients (65.6% male, mean age 31.5 ± 9.5) diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria together with age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) (n = 58, 63.8% male, mean age 32.3 ± 9.6). Neurocognitive alterations were assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) and compared between groups using the generalized linear model (GLM) method. Multivariate effects were tested by principal component analysis combined with multivariate pattern analysis. Self-reported symptom severity was tested for correlations with neurocognitive performance. GLM analyses revealed nominally significant differences between the aADHD and HC groups in several domains, however, only the Rapid Visual Information Processing measures survived correction, indicating impaired sustained attention and response inhibition in the aADHD group. Comparison of the predominantly inattentive and the hyperactive-impulsive/combined subtypes yielded nominally significant differences with higher levels of dysfunction in the inattentive group. In the stepwise discriminant analysis aADHD and HC groups were best separated with 2 factors representing sustained attention and reaction time. We found only weak correlations between symptom severity and CANTAB factors. aADHD patients are neuropsychologically heterogeneous and subtypes show different neurocognitive profiles. Differences between the aADHD and HC groups were driven primarily by the inattentive subtype. Sustained attention and its factor derivative showed the most significant alterations in aADHD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current research suggests that people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at higher risk of physical and mental health disorders. This study aimed to explore these health risks in ADHD from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. METHODS This study forms part of the 'Managing young people with ADHD in Primary care (MAP) study'. A survey developed by the study team was distributed to over 16 year olds with ADHD, their supporters, primary healthcare professionals and health commissioners across England, via social media and through patient/clinical networks (September-October 2022). This survey contained two questions on health risks. Question one asked about views on health risks in ADHD (free text). Question two asked about advice given (options list and free text). Descriptive statistics summarised responses to questions one and two, and qualitative analysis (reflexive thematic analysis) was used to explore free text responses from question one. RESULTS 782 participants responded to the MAP survey. Of these, 206 healthcare professionals, 157 people with ADHD and 88 supporters answered question one. The most mentioned perceived risks were substance misuse, sleep disorders, weight management and smoking. More people with ADHD reported disordered eating as a health risk (n = 32) than healthcare professionals (n = 5). Generated themes included perceived health risks, impact of living with ADHD, lack of adequate healthcare, and need for ADHD awareness. In respect to advice given (question two), based on responses from 258 professionals, 162 people with ADHD and 100 supporters, the most common advice discussed in consultation was mental health (n = 149, n = 50 and n = 17 respectively). High numbers of respondents reported not giving/receiving advice on wider health (n = 38, n = 88 and n = 61 respectively). CONCLUSIONS Findings demonstrate that respondents perceived a range of physical and mental health risks posed by ADHD. These related to difficulties with activities of daily living, as well as healthcare interactions and the impact of core features of ADHD (e.g. impulsivity, emotional dysregulation). These risks are not currently explicitly addressed in United Kingdom national guidance on ADHD. More work is needed to examine and address the broader health outcomes of people with ADHD.

Abstract
Studies have shown that individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) pose an increased risk for developing substance use disorders. Increased cannabis product accessibility and recent legislative changes have led to increased cannabis consumption, thereby increasing the risk of cannabis use disorder (CUD). The present meta-analysis explored the lifetime and current prevalence of CUD in ADHD. A systematic review was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, PsycINFO and Web of Science. A total of 14 articles were included and used to estimate the aggregate lifetime and current prevalence of CUD in ADHD alongside risk ratios comparing increased risk of CUD in ADHD versus control samples. Mixed and random-effects models indicated that lifetime and current prevalence rates of CUD in ADHD populations were 26.9% and 19.2%, respectively (although prediction intervals ranged from 12.4% to 48.8% and 5.5%-39.1%, respectively). Analysis of the risk ratios indicated that those with ADHD were at 2.85- and 2.91-times greater risk of a lifetime or current diagnosis of CUD, respectively, than those in the general population. Our findings support the need for additional research on the prevalence of CUD in those with ADHD, as well as the inclusion of CUD screening in the treatment of ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience difficulties related to emotion regulation. Such difficulties are known to substantially impact quality of life and overall functioning. Yet, there is a lack of treatment interventions specifically designed to address these challenges. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to describe the development and assess the feasibility, along with the initial clinical outcomes, of a novel blended intervention for adults with ADHD. The blended intervention combines both face-to-face and digital components and is specifically designed to address emotion dysregulation in ADHD. METHODS This intervention was an 8-week blended intervention combining weekly face-to-face group sessions with a supplementary digital companion app. The intervention is based on elements from dialectic behavioral therapy skills training and positive psychology. To evaluate its feasibility, we performed a 10-week feasibility study with an uncontrolled pre-post study design, including 16 adults with ADHD and co-occurring emotion dysregulation. The feasibility measures encompassed adherence, satisfaction, and perceived credibility of the intervention. Clinical outcomes were evaluated by self-reported symptoms of emotion dysregulation, inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, executive function, depression, anxiety, and a measure of quality of life. Paired sample 2-tailed t tests were used to analyze clinical outcomes with a Bonferroni-corrected significance level. RESULTS Both treatment credibility and treatment satisfaction were rated favorably by the majority of the participants. In particular, the participants emphasized meeting others with ADHD as beneficial. In terms of adherence, 3 participants withdrew before initiating the intervention, while another 4 participants did not complete the intervention. On average, the participants who enrolled in the intervention attended 6.2 of the 8 group sessions and completed 6.7 of the 8 skills training modules in the companion app. In terms of clinical outcomes, there was a reduction in symptoms of emotion dysregulation from before to after the intervention (d=2.0). Significant improvements were also observed in measures of inattention (d=1.1) and hyperactivity-impulsivity (d=0.9). However, no significant improvements were found in the domains of depression, anxiety, quality of life, and executive functioning. CONCLUSIONS The results are encouraging, both in terms of feasibility and the preliminary clinical results on emotion dysregulation. The blended format, combining digital and face-to-face elements, may also seem to offer some advantages: the group-based format was valued as it facilitated peer interaction, while a rather high completion of modules in the companion app highlights its potential to enhance skills training between the group sessions. Future randomized controlled trials are called for to further evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the intervention. Abstract
The article presents a review of scientific publications devoted to the study of the characteristics of the clinical picture and the dynamics of the main symptoms in adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The authors present current data on the prevalence of this disease, leading clinical manifestations and the most common comorbid pathology. Research data on the impact of ADHD in adulthood on educational and professional activities are presented, and the economic and criminological aspects of ADHD are considered. The main methods of psychotherapeutic correction and pharmacological therapy are presented.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is associated with early neurodevelopmental disorders, including most frequently learning disorders (LD), among them dyslexia and dyspraxia. Despite the demonstrated links between schizophrenia and LD, specific clinical patterns of the schizophrenia with a history of LD subgroup remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate cognitive impairment, symptoms and functional outcome associated with a history of LD in a large cross-sectional, multicentric, sample of schizophrenia subjects. 492 community-dwelling subjects with schizophrenia (75.6% male, mean age 30.8 years) were consecutively included in the network of the FondaMental Expert Centers for Schizophrenia in France and received a thorough clinical assessment. The 51 (10.4%) subjects identified with a history of LD had significantly impaired general cognitive ability (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Full Scale Total IQ: Cohen's d = 0.50, p = 0.001), processing speed (d = 0.19), verbal comprehension (d = 0.29), working memory (d = 0.31), cognitive inhibition and flexibility (d = 0.26), central executive functioning (d = 0.26), phonemic verbal fluency (d = 0.22) and premorbid intellectual ability (d = 0.48), as well as with a worse functional outcome (Global Assessment of Functioning, d = 0.21), independently of age, sex, education level, symptoms, treatments, and addiction comorbidities. These results indicate that a history of LD is associated with later cognitive impairment and functional outcome in schizophrenia. This suggests that history of LD is a relevant clinical marker to discriminate subgroups of patients with schizophrenia with different profiles in a precision psychiatry framework.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Emotion dysregulation is frequently seen in adults with ADHD and is associated with many adverse outcomes. We conducted a scoping review of factors associated with emotion dysregulation in adults with ADHD. METHOD PubMed and PsycInfo (EBSCO) were searched. Articles were included if they measured ADHD, emotional dysregulation or some aspect of emotional dysregulation, and at least one other construct. Studies examining physiological underpinnings as well as clinical trials examining the effect of ADHD medications on emotional dysregulation were excluded because recent reviews have already examined these topics. RESULTS Thirty-five studies were included in the review. Factors such as biological sex, comorbidities, attachment style, using certain emotional regulation strategies, and ADHD subtype tend to be related to emotion dysregulation. CONCLUSION Clinicians working with adults with ADHD can collect information on these factors to better understand risk for emotion dysregulation, and emotion regulation skills may be one area for intervention.

Abstract
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder, with an onset in childhood, that accompanies the person throughout their life, with prevalence between 3 and 5% in adults. Recent studies point towards a fourth core symptom of the disorder related to the emotional information processing that would explain the repercussions that ADHD has on the social, academic, and professional life of the people affected. This review aims to describe emotion dysregulation features as well as the brain activity associated in adults with ADHD. A search of the scientific literature was launched in specialized databases: PsycInfo, Medline, Eric, PsycArticle, Psicodoc and Scopus, following PRISMA guidelines. Twenty-two articles met the inclusion criteria: (a) an ADHD clinical diagnosis, (b) participants over 18 years old, (c) emotion regulation measurement, (d) empirical studies, and (c) in English. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies included, they were classified into three sections: measures and features of emotion regulation (ER) in people with ADHD, neurological and psychophysiological activity related to ER, and treatments. The studies found that meet the selection criteria are scarce and very heterogeneous both in aims and in sample features. Adults with ADHD show a more frequent use of non-adaptive emotion regulation strategies compared to people without ADHD symptoms. Moreover, emotion dysregulation was associated with symptom severity, executive functioning, psychiatric comorbidities, and even with criminal conviction. Different patterns of brain activity were observed when people with and without ADHD were compared. These results may suggest that psychopharmacological treatments as well as behavioral therapies could be useful tools for improving emotional difficulties in adult ADHD.

Abstract
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) are common medical conditions often coexisting and exerting mutual influence on disease course and pharmacological treatment response. Each disorder, when considered separately, relies on different therapeutic approaches, making it crucial to detect the plausible association between them. Treating solely the emerging condition (e.g., alcoholism) and disregarding the patient's whole psychopathological ground often leads to treatment failure and relapse. Clinical experience and scientific evidence rather show that tailoring treatments for these three conditions considering their co-occurrence as a sole complex disorder yields more fulfilling and durable clinical outcomes. In light of the above considerations, the purpose of the present review is to critically discuss the pharmacological strategies in the personalized treatment of complex conditions defined by ADHD-bipolarityalcoholism coexistence.

Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most frequent developmental disorder in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Substance use disorders are a frequent comorbidity in ADHD. The many different forms and severities of these comorbidities necessitate individual strategies in the diagnostics and treatment. Principally, ADHD and addictive disorders should be treated together whenever possible. The more acute or severe the dependence disorder is, the less priority can be given to the topic of ADHD and the lower are the chances of carrying out valid diagnostics and simultaneous treatment at the beginning of the treatment of the addictive disorder. The less severe and acute the addictive disorder is, the quicker the diagnostics and, if necessary, treatment of ADHD can be initiated. In this continuing education article, the customary means for diagnostics and pharmacotherapy as well as the special features that must be considered with respect to comorbidities of both disorders are presented.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES High rates of non-right-handedness (NRH) including mixed-handedness have been reported in neurodevelopmental disorders. In schizophrenia (SZ), atypical handedness has been inconsistently related to impaired features. We aimed to determine whether SZ subjects with NRH and mixed-handedness had poorer clinical and cognitive outcomes compared to their counterparts. METHODS 667 participants were tested with a battery of neuropsychological tests, and assessed for laterality using the Edinburg Handedness Inventory. Clinical symptomatology was assessed. Learning disorders and obstetrical complications were recorded. Biological parameters were explored. RESULTS The prevalence of NRH and mixed-handedness was high (respectively, 42.4% and 34.1%). In the multivariable analyses, NRH was associated with cannabis use disorder (p = 0.045). Mixed-handedness was associated with positive symptoms (p = 0.041), current depressive disorder (p = 0.005)), current cannabis use (p = 0.024) and less akathisia (p = 0.019). A history of learning disorder was associated with NRH. No association was found with cognition, trauma history, obstetrical complications, psychotic symptoms, peripheral inflammation. CONCLUSIONS Non-right and mixed-handedness are very high in patients with SZ, possibly reflecting a neurodevelopmental origin. NRH is associated with learning disorders and cannabis use. Mixed-handedness is associated with positive symptoms, current depressive disorder, cannabis use and less akathisia. However, this study did not confirm greater cognitive impairment in these patients.

Abstract
Introduction Emotional dysregulation (ED) is characterized by inappropriate emotional reactions related to environmental or cognitive stimuli. In most recent years, increasing interest has been devoted to its definition and detection across mental disorders for its detrimental role progressively highlighted in both neurodevelopment and adult mental disorders, with implications on the severity of clinical manifestations. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate and gather the scientific evidence about ED in adult psychiatric population to elucidate the concept of ED as trans-nosographic entity. Methods The electronics databases PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science was reviewed to identify studies in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines; at the end of the selection process a total of 29 studies (N = 709; N = 658; N = 1,425) was included. All studies included assessed the presence of ED symptoms, by means of a validate scale in adult (>18 years of age), in clinically diagnosed patients as well as healthy control participants. Results Our results suggest ED as a trans-diagnostic factor across multiple mental disorders, such as bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, personality disorders; a better definition of this concept could be helpful to interpret and clarify many clinical cases and improve their diagnostic and therapeutic management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES High rates of non-right-handedness (NRH) and mixed-handedness exist in neurodevelopmental disorders. Dysfunctional neurodevelopmental pathways may be implicated in the underlying pathophysiology of bipolar disorders (BD), at least in some subgroups. Yet little is known about correlates of NRH and mixed-handedness in BD. The objectives of this national study are to determine (i) the prevalence of NRH and mixed-handedness in a well-stabilized sample of BD individuals; (ii) if NRH/mixed-handedness in BD is associated with a different clinical, biological and neurocognitive profile. METHODS We included 2174 stabilized individuals. Participants were tested with a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests. Handedness was assessed using a single oral question. Learning and/or language disorders and obstetrical complications were recorded using childhood records. Common environmental, clinical and biological parameters were assessed. RESULTS The prevalence of NRH and mixed-handedness were, respectively, 11.6 and 2.4%. Learning/language disorders were found in 9.7% out of the total sample and were associated with atypical handedness (only dyslexia for mixed-handedness (p < 0.01), and dyslexia and dysphasia for NRH (p = 0.01 and p = 0.04, respectively). In multivariate analyses, NRH was associated with a younger age of BD onset (aOR 0.98 (95% CI 0.96-0.99) and lifetime substance use disorder (aOR 1.40 (95% CI 1.03-1.82) but not with any of the cognitive subtasks. Mixed-handedness was associated in univariate analyses with lifetime substance use disorder, lifetime cannabis use disorder (all p < 0.01) and less mood stabilizer prescription (p = 0.028). No association was found between NRH or mixed-handedness and the following parameters: trauma history, obstetrical complications, prior psychotic symptoms, bipolar subtype, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, peripheral inflammation or body mass index. CONCLUSIONS Handedness may be associated with specific features in BD, possibly reflecting a specific subgroup with a neurodevelopmental load.

Abstract
Background Cannabis use in university students is associated with academic achievement failure and health issues. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and cannabis use after 1 year among students according to previous cannabis use. Methods Students in France were recruited from February 2013 to July 2020 in the i-Share cohort. 4,270 participants were included (2,135 who never used cannabis at inclusion and 2,135 who did). The Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) was used to assess ADHD symptoms at inclusion. Cannabis use frequency was evaluated 1 year after inclusion. Multinomial regressions were conducted to assess the association between inclusion ADHD symptoms and cannabis use after 1 year. Results Increase in ASRS scores was linked with a greater probability to use cannabis after 1 year and to have a higher cannabis use frequency (once a year—once a month adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.24 (1.15–1.34), more than once a month adjusted OR: 1.43 (1.27–1.61)). Among participants who never used cannabis at inclusion, this association disappeared (once a year—once a month adjusted OR: 1.15 (0.95–1.39), more than once a month adjusted OR: 1.16 (0.67–2)) but remained in participants who ever used cannabis at inclusion (once a year—once a month adjusted OR: 1.17 (1.06–1.29), more than once a month adjusted OR: 1.35 (1.18–1.55)). Conclusions High levels of ADHD symptoms in students could lead to continued cannabis use rather than new initiations.

Abstract
Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are often associated with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adult populations due to multiple neurobiological, genetic, and psychosocial risk factors. This chapter provides a picture of the clinical aspects of adults with both ADHD and SUDs at treatment entry into a Dual Disorder Unit introducing the concept of different types of craving that may lead to substance use and abuse. At treatment entry, the presence of different comorbid SUD clusters, characterized by either stimulants/alcohol or by the use of cannabinoids, has not been shown to influence ADHD-specific symptomatology or severity, despite being crucial for the identification of a specific type of craving. We identified four clinical presentations of adult ADHD: Emotional Dysregulation, Substance Use, Core-ADHD Symptoms, and Positive Emotionality variants, that offer a practical guide in diagnosing and managing adult ADHD patients. Although the evidence of an effective medical treatment for Cocaine Use Disorder is insufficient, in our experience, toxicomanic behavior during stimulant treatment is sharply reduced in ADHD patients with cocaine addiction. Moreover, caffeinated compounds in military soldiers with ADHD may help reduce ADHD symptoms, making caffeine a potential pharmacological tool worth further investigation. Finally, substance use comorbidity does not influence treatment retention rate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occurs with antisocial behaviour. Several studies have shown high rates of ADHD among prisoners. However, the prevalence of crime among individuals with ADHD is less known. The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of lifetime criminal conviction (CC) in a clinical sample of adults with ADHD, and the associations with the severity of ADHD and emotional dysregulation (ED). METHODS Patients were admitted to a private psychiatric outpatient clinic in Oslo between 2014 and 2018. Of the 656 patients diagnosed with ADHD, 629 (95.9%) agreed to participate in the study. CC was determined based on self-reporting of the lifetime history of criminal behaviour. ADHD was diagnosed according to the DSM-5 criteria, and ADHD severity was measured using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). ED was assessed by the eight-item version of Barkley's Current Behaviour Scale - Self-Report (CBS-SR). RESULTS The prevalence of self-reported CC in this clinical sample was 11.7% among women and 24.5% among men. CC was associated with hyperactive-impulsive severity (p < 0.001) and ED (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of self-reported lifetime criminal conviction was high for both genders. CC was associated with symptom severity of hyperactivity-impulsivity and emotional dysregulation. The findings suggest the need for greater research efforts on the avoidance of criminal activity in people with ADHD and targeted intervention for ADHD treatment and CC prevention.

Abstract
Emotional dysregulation (ED) is currently the most frequently used term to describe children with an impaired regulation of emotional states. Recent research studies speculate whether ED may be a neurodevelopmental disorder itself, a shared risk factor, or a common key feature of several psychiatric disorders, including, among others, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD). The association between ADHD and ED is one of the main reasons of misconceptions in the definition of boundaries between ADHD and BSD, leading to the frequent misdiagnosis of ADHD as BSD. Since ED is a multidimensional concept, a novel instrument-the Reactivity, Intensity, Polarity and Stability (RIPoSt) scale-was recently developed to assess the different dimensions of ED, which could help in detecting specific ED profiles in clinical youths. Our study included 154 patients, aged 13.8 ± 2.3 years, diagnosed with either ADHD, BSD, or comorbid condition, and a school-based sample of 40 healthy control (HC) adolescents, aged 12.5 ± 1.2 years. The RIPoSt scale and the Child Behavior Checklist were administered to both groups. Our results indicate that affective instability and negative emotionality subscales, as well as negative emotional dysregulation, are higher in BSD, both pure and comorbid with ADHD, while emotional impulsivity is higher in the comorbid condition and similar in the ADHD and BSD alone group; all clinical groups scored higher than HC. Conversely, positive emotionality is similar among clinical groups and within them and HC. Our findings also support the validity of the RIPoSt questionnaire, since the instrument proved to have good-to-excellent internal consistency, and strongly significant positive correlations were found with the CBCL-Dysregulation Profile, which is a commonly used, indirect measure of ED. Hence, the five subscales of the RIPoSt can be reliably used as an effective tool to study the emotional dysregulation in different clinical conditions, to help disentangle the complex relationship between ADHD and juvenile BSD and to provide clinicians with crucial evidence for better diagnostic characterization and therapeutic indications.

Abstract
While the association between adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (A-ADHD) and Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) has been widely explored, less attention has been dedicated to the various substance use variants. In a previous paper, we identified two variants: type 1 (use of stimulants/alcohol) and type 2 (use of cannabinoids). In this study, we compared demographic, clinical and symptomatologic features between Dual Disorder A-ADHD (DD/A-ADHD) patients according to our substance use typology, and A-ADHD without DD (NDD/A-ADHD) ones. NDD patients were more frequently diagnosed as belonging to inattentive ADHD subtype compared with type 1 DD/A-ADHD patients, but not with respect to type 2 DD/ADHD. NDD/A-ADHD patients showed less severe symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity than DD/A-ADHD type 1, but not type 2. Type 1 and type 2 patients shared the feature of displaying higher impulsiveness than NDD/A-ADHD ones. General psychopathology scores were more severe in type 2 DD/ADHD patients, whereas type 1 patients showed greater similarity to NDD/A-ADHD. Legal problems were more strongly represented in type 1 than in type 2 patients or NDD/A-ADHD ones. Our results suggest that type 1 and type 2 substance use differ in their effects on A-ADHD patients-an outcome that brings with it different likely implications in dealing with the diagnostic and therapeutic processes.

Abstract
Patients with a serious mental illness often use cannabis at higher rates than the general population and are also often diagnosed with cannabis use disorder. Clinical studies reveal a strong association between the psychoactive effects of cannabis and the symptoms of serious mental illnesses. Although some studies purport that cannabis may treat mental illnesses, others have highlighted the negative consequences of use for patients with a mental illness and for otherwise healthy users. As epidemiological and clinical studies are unable to directly infer causality or examine neurobiology through circuit manipulation, preclinical animal models remain a valuable resource for examining the causal effects of cannabis. This is especially true considering the diversity of constituents in the cannabis plant contributing to its effects. In this mini-review, we provide an updated perspective on the preclinical evidence of shared neurobiological mechanisms underpinning the dual diagnosis of cannabis use disorder and a serious mental illness. We present studies of cannabinoid exposure in otherwise healthy rodents, as well as rodent models of schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder, and the resulting impact on electrophysiological indices of neural circuit activity. We propose a consolidated neural circuit-based understanding of the preclinical evidence to generate new hypotheses and identify novel therapeutic targets.
