Abstract
This study investigated the effect of sub-chilling whole gutted salmon and sub-chilled storage at -1 °C in modified-atmosphere packaging in two recyclable mono-material trays (CPET, HDPE). Quality parameters were measured, including water-holding properties, salt content, color, texture, lipid oxidation, and sensory and microbiological shelf life. The oxygen transmission rate was measured for the packages. Compared to traditional fish storage on ice, sub-chilling gave a 0.4% weight gain, better water-holding capacity, and higher salt content. The sub-chilled fish gave a significantly better sensory quality and microbiological shelf life of up to 49 days. Photobacterium was the dominating bacteria during storage. Salmon packaged in CPET trays had a higher drip loss than HDPE trays, but a lower rate of lipid oxidation (1-penten-3-ol). Our results showed the feasibility of significantly extending shelf life with sub-chilling, removing the need for ice. Moreover, using recyclable trays for packaging contributes to a circular economy without compromising food quality.

Abstract
Plant-based food provides more ALA (α-linolenic acid) and less EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexanoic acid) than marine food. Earlier studies indicate that cetoleic acid (22:1n-11) stimulates the n-3 pathway from ALA to EPA and DHA. The present study aimed to investigate the dietary effects of camelina oil (CA) high in ALA and sandeel oil (SA) high in cetoleic acid on the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. Male Zucker fa/fa rats were fed a diet of soybean oil (Ctrl) or diets of CA, SA, or a combination of CA and SA. Significantly higher levels of DPA (docosapentaenoic acid) and DHA in blood cells from the CA group compared to the Ctrl indicate an active conversion of ALA to DPA and DHA. Increasing the uptake and deposition of EPA and DHA meant that a trend towards a decrease in the liver gene expression of Elovl5, Fads1, and Fads2 along with an increase in the dietary content of SA was observed. However, 25% of the SA could be exchanged with CA without having a significant effect on EPA, DPA, or DHA in blood cells, indicating that bioactive components in SA, such as cetoleic acid, might counteract the inhibiting effect of the high dietary content of DHA on the n-3 biosynthetic pathway.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary n-3 very-long-chain PUFA (n-3 VLC-PUFA) on the maturation and development of skin tissue in juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in vivo, as well as their effects on skin keratocyte and human skin fibroblast cell migration in vitro. Atlantic salmon were fed different dietary levels of n-3 VLC-PUFA from an initial weight of 6 g to a final weight of 11 g. Changes in skin morphology were analysed at two time points during the experiment, and the effects on skin tissue fatty acid composition were determined. Additionally, in vitro experiments using human dermal fibroblasts and primary Atlantic salmon keratocytes were conducted to investigate the effect of VLC-PUFA on the migration capacity of the cells. The results demonstrated that increased dietary levels of n-3 VLC-PUFA led to an increased epidermis thickness and more rapid scale maturation in Atlantic salmon skin in vivo, leading to a more mature skin morphology, and possibly more robust skin, at an earlier life stage. Additionally, human skin fibroblasts and salmon skin keratocytes supplemented with n-3 VLC-PUFA in vitro showed more rapid migration, indicating potentially beneficial effects of VLC-PUFA in wound healing. In conclusion, VLC-PUFA may have beneficial effects on skin tissue development, function and integrity.

Abstract
This Special Topic focuses on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes in the deep interiors of planets, in which their fluid dynamos are in operation. The dynamo-generated, global, magnetic fields provide a background for our solar-terrestrial environment. Probing the processes within the dynamos is a significant theoretical and computational challenge and any window into interior dynamics greatly increases our understanding. Such a window is provided by exploring rapid dynamics, particularly MHD waves about the dynamo-defined basic state. This field is the subject of current attention as geophysical observations and numerical modellings advance. We here pay particular attention to torsional Alfvén waves/oscillations and magnetic Rossby waves, which may be regarded as typical axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric modes, respectively, amongst a wide variety of wave classes of rapidly rotating MHD fluids. The excitation of those waves has been evidenced for the Earth - whilst their presence has also been suggested for Jupiter. We shall overview their dynamics, summarise our current understanding, and give open questions for future perspectives.

Abstract
AIMS The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) EURObservational Research Programme (EORP) Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) Registry aims to identify international patterns in NSTEMI management in clinical practice and outcomes against the 2015 ESC Guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndromes in patients presenting without ST-segment-elevation. METHODS AND RESULTS Consecutively hospitalised adult NSTEMI patients (n = 3620) were enrolled between 11 March 2019 and 6 March 2021, and individual patient data prospectively collected at 287 centres in 59 participating countries during a two-week enrolment period per centre. The registry collected data relating to baseline characteristics, major outcomes (in-hospital death, acute heart failure, cardiogenic shock, bleeding, stroke/transient ischaemic attack, and 30-day mortality) and guideline-recommended NSTEMI care interventions: electrocardiogram pre- or in-hospital, pre-hospitalization receipt of aspirin, echocardiography, coronary angiography, referral to cardiac rehabilitation, smoking cessation advice, dietary advice, and prescription on discharge of aspirin, P2Y12 inhibition, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi)/angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB), beta-blocker, and statin. CONCLUSION The EORP NSTEMI Registry is an international, prospective registry of care and outcomes of patients treated for NSTEMI, which will provide unique insights into the contemporary management of hospitalised NSTEMI patients, compliance with ESC 2015 NSTEMI Guidelines, and identify potential barriers to optimal management of this common clinical presentation associated with significant morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
AIM This literature review explores the need for greater prominence of gerodontology in the undergraduate dental curriculum, focusing on the significance of gerodontology for dental students on clinical placements. BACKGROUND As Australia's population ages the number of dentate older people is increasing. An assessment of the dental profession's preparedness, including that of future providers, is needed to ensure that this public health issue is addressed. METHODS A database search was performed in MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL and JCU OneSearch. Of the 41 articles identified, 31 were selected for review using a narrative approach. DISCUSSION Of the 31 articles reviewed, 12 were Australian, 9 North American and 5 European. Five overarching themes were identified, including preparedness for residential aged care facilities; barriers to oral health services provision; attitudes to aged care; gerodontology as part of a dental school curriculum and service-based learning. CONCLUSION There are differences in the gerodontology curricula of dental schools, with a wide variation of clinical exposure to older patients. There is evidence that exposure to gerodontology curriculum prior to treating older people may help dental students feel more prepared for managing patients in aged care. The current marginal status of gerodontology in dental school curricula is in need of review.

Abstract
SummaryMelagatran, a new, competitive and rapid inhibitor of thrombin with a molecular mass of 429 Da is described. Melagatran is well tolerated when administered in very high doses, and the oral bioavailability in the dog is relatively high. The aim of the study was to determine, in the preclinical setting, the degree of selectivity against the fibrinolytic system required for entering the clinical development phase. Melagatran was compared with two structurally similar thrombin inhibitors, inogatran and H 317/86. The potent inhibition of thrombin by melagatran was demonstrated by a low inhibition constant (Ki) for thrombin (0.002 μmol/l) and prolongation of clotting time to twice the control value in coagulation assays at low concentrations (0.010, 0.59 and 2.2 μmol/l for thrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time, respectively). Furthermore, thrombin-induced platelet aggregation was inhibited at the same concentration (IC50-value 0.002 μmol/l) as the Ki-value for thrombin. In two assays of global fibrinolysis, inhibition was observed at a concentration of 1.1 μmol/l in a euglobulin plasma fraction model, while no inhibition was observed at a concentration of ≤10 μmol/l in a plasma model. In an in vivo model of endogenous fibrinolysis in the rat, inhibition of fibrinolysis was observed at ≥1.0 μmol/l. In all assays, except the Ki-ratio determinations, the compounds could be graded with regard to selectivity against the fibrinolytic system: inogatran > melagatran > H 317/86. For melagatran, inhibition of fibrinolysis was not observed at concentrations below the upper limit of the proposed therapeutic plasma concentration interval (<0.5 μmol/l). Thus, melagatran seems to have a sufficient selectivity against the fibrinolytic system, while H 317/86 was considered to be insufficient for clinical development.

Abstract
We use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to resolve vibrational losses corresponding to the OH stretch where the X-ray absorption process allows us to selectively probe different structural subensembles in liquid water. The results point to a unified interpretation of X-ray and vibrational spectroscopic data in line with a picture of two classes of structural environments in the liquid at ambient conditions with predominantly close-packed high-density liquid (HDL) and occasional local fluctuations into strongly tetrahedral low-density liquid (LDL).

Abstract
The direct elucidation of the reaction pathways in heterogeneous catalysis has been challenging due to the short-lived nature of reaction intermediates. Here, we directly measured on ultrafast time scales the initial hydrogenation steps of adsorbed CO on a Ru catalyst surface, which is known as the bottleneck reaction in syngas and CO2 reforming processes. We initiated the hydrogenation of CO with an ultrafast laser temperature jump and probed transient changes in the electronic structure using real-time X-ray spectroscopy. In combination with theoretical simulations, we verified the formation of CHO during CO hydrogenation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children undergoing cancer therapy are at risk for infectious complications that require hospitalization and antimicrobial therapy. Host factors such as age and underlying disease may predict the risk of severe infections in these children. To describe the increased morbidity due to infections in children with cancer, we characterized the antibiotic use during the infectious complications in a national cohort of children 7-16 years of age with cancer. PROCEDURE Data on infectious complications were prospectively collected from the medical records of all newly diagnosed children with cancer, aged 7-16 years, in Sweden between 2004 and 2006. An episode of infection was defined as a period of time when oral or intravenous antimicrobial treatment was prescribed because of symptoms of infection. RESULTS A total of 230 infectious episodes occurred in 80 of the 101 patients. Pathogens were isolated in 15% of the blood cultures that showed a predominance of Gram-positive bacteria. Intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics with cephalosporins and carbapenems were mostly used as single drugs but also in combination with aminoglycosides and glycopeptide. The median treatment length varied between 6 and 11 days depending on cancer diagnosis. CONCLUSION Our data demonstrate that infectious complications contribute significantly to morbidity in children with cancer aged 7-16 years. At the time of this survey, antibiotic prescription patterns varied and cephalosporins and carbapenems were mostly used. With increasing antibiotic resistance, a more stringent antibiotic stewardship with less use of cephalosporins and carbapenems should be encouraged for children with cancer. Data on prescription patterns should be incorporated as a quality measurement in pediatric cancer care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A single-center nonrandomized clinical trial was performed to assess the safety and efficacy of IRE ablation of liver tumors in humans. METHODS 38 malignant liver tumors on 30 patients were treated with IRE between September 2011 and September 2014. Treatment was with curative intent, and the diagnoses were colorectal cancer with liver metastases (CRLM) (n = 23), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (n = 8) and other metastasis (n = 7). Patients were selected when surgery, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or microwave ablation (MWA) was not an option, and when they met inclusion criteria (tumor size < 3 cm, 1-2 tumors). Patients were followed-up at 1 and 6 months with a contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT), and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CE-US) at 3 months. RESULTS Ablation success was defined as no evidence of residual tumor in the ablated area as confirmed by CE-CT and CE-US. At 3 months ablation success was 78.9%, and 65.8% at 6 months. There was no statistically significant difference between tumor volume (<5 cm3 vs >5 cm3, p = 0.518), and between diagnosis (CRLM vs HCC, p = 0.084) in terms of local recurrence. Complications were classified according to the standardized grading system of Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). A minor complication occurred in six patients (20%), one patient (3.3%) suffered from a major complication (bile duct dilatation and stricture of the portal vein and bile duct). No mortalities occurred at 30 days. CONCLUSIONS IRE appears to be a safe treatment modality for a selected group of patients with liver tumors and offers high local tumor control at 3 and 6 months.

Abstract
Introduction: Secondary breast cancer in CNS is a rising clinical problem despite an ongoing improvement of the prognosis in breast cancer in general. The commonly proposed reason is the decreased passage through the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) of otherwise effective systemic therapies. The prognosis of patients (pts) with metastases (met) in CNS is poor and the therapy is mainly based on local therapy with surgery or stereotactic radiotherapy or alternatively, whole brain radiotherapy. However, therapy differs among centers and guidelines are based on relatively small studies with inhomogeneous groups of pts. The value of systemic therapy is not clearly established. Data has shown different outcome in different breast cancer subtypes.
Patients and Methods: Pts treated between 2009 and 2016 with metastases in CNS (brain, medulla and/or meningeal) were identified in our treatment database. This represents all breast cancer pts in Uppsala County with CNS involvement during that time period. We categorized the pts based on number of brain met and on the tumor subtype. We compared the pattern of metastases, the relationship to extra-CNS met and time, response to given therapy and survival.
Results: Of 68 pts 51% had oligometastases in brain, 41% multiple brain metastases and 7% meningeal metastases only. Median age was 58 years (range 34-81) median size of largest tumor was 16 mm. The most common subtype was HER2 positive (HER2) 37% followed by Luminal B (LumB) 31%, Triple negative (TNBC) 18% and Luminal A (LumA) 15%. The subtypes had different clinical appearance according to table:

In more than 50% of the TNBC pts was CNS the first site of disseminated disease. This was the case in only 24% of the LumB pts and none of the LumA pts. Systemic therapies were given to 91% of all pts and radiological complete responses in CNS were reported in 24% (HER2 32%, TNBC 17%, LumB 24% and LumA 10%). The median survival was 13 months, but differed significantly between the different subtypes and was surprisingly short for LumA, which not could be explained by death by metastases outside CNS. Eventually, developed 25% of all pts meningeal involvement. CNS met were the prime reason for death in 72% of the pts.
Conclusions: This cohort study describes the clinical appearance and prognosis of CNS metastases in breast cancer pts during a seven years period in the institution treating all pats in the County of Uppsala. Distinctive clinical differences between the breast cancer subtypes could be noticed which possible represents different mechanism in the metastatic process as well as different treatment response. The survival in the luminal subgroups was short and CNS met developed considerably later in the course of the disease when pts might have developed a more aggressive and therapy resistant disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marine long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are susceptible to oxidation, generating a range of different oxidation products with suggested negative health effects. The aim of the present study was to utilize sensitive high-throughput transcriptome analyses to investigate potential unfavorable effects of oxidized fish oil (PV: 18 meq/kg; AV: 9) compared to high-quality fish oil (PV: 4 meq/kg; AV: 3). METHODS In a double-blinded randomized controlled study for seven weeks, 35 healthy subjects were assigned to 8 g of either oxidized fish oil or high quality fish oil. The daily dose of EPA+DHA was 1.6 g. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated at baseline and after 7 weeks and transcriptome analyses were performed with the illuminaHT-12 v4 Expression BeadChip. RESULTS No gene transcripts, biological processes, pathway or network were significantly changed in the oxidized fish oil group compared to the fish oil group. Furthermore, gene sets related to oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease were not differently regulated between the groups. Within group analyses revealed a more prominent effect after intake of high quality fish oil as 11 gene transcripts were significantly (FDR < 0.1) changed from baseline versus three within the oxidized fish oil group. CONCLUSION The suggested concern linking lipid oxidation products to short-term unfavorable health effects may therefore not be evident at a molecular level in this explorative study. Abstract
Background
Administration of treatment for cancer patients can require substantial health care resources and differences in administration burden between treatments are therefore important to take into account when comparing them. Besides the direct personnel and bed time, the administration can also have broader consequences on the organisation and process of care delivery, as well as on the patients. How to value differences in these parameters is however not straightforward.
Nab-paclitaxel and paclitaxel are examples of two treatments with important differences in administration burden, and the objective of this study was to perform a time-motion study to compare time required for treatment administration.
Material and methods
Breast cancer patients vising the oncology day care unit at the department of oncology at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden, as part of their regular treatment-course with nab-paclitaxel (n=13) or paclitaxel (n=9) were included in the study.
Time data collection was based on a questionnaire answered by hospital staff. Time for infusions and the total patient time in hospital were measured for each patient.
Results
Mean infusion times per administration of nab-paclitaxel and paclitaxel were 42.1 (Standard deviation (SD) 20.7) minutes and 104.3 (SD 43.3) minutes, respectively. Total patient times in clinic per infusion were 82.2 (SD 40.9) minutes and 183.9 (SD 34.8) minutes, respectively.
A 12-week treatment course of nab-paclitaxel (every three weeks), nab-paclitaxel (weekly) and paclitaxel (weekly) would require in total 2.8, 8.4 and 20.9 hours of infusion time, respectively. The corresponding patient time in hospital would be 5.5, 16.4 and 36.8 hours, respectively.
Conclusion
There can be substantial differences in nurse and facility resources required for administration of chemotherapy, our data showed approximately a 7-fold difference in patient, personnel and facility time requirements between the compared treatments.
In a time with shortage of both hospital personnel and facilities, the valuation of these resources is not easy and may have broader impact on the organisation and delivery of care. Monetary valuation using rent cost or salaries may in a time of resource shortage underestimate the true opportunity cost, and more research and discussions on how to prioritise use of these resources versus other costs are therefore needed.

Abstract
We studied CO oxidation on Ru(0001) induced by 400 nm and 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses where we find a branching ratio between CO oxidation and desorption of 1:9 and 1:31, respectively, showing higher selectivity towards CO oxidation for the shorter wavelength excitation. Activation energies computed with density functional theory show discrepancies with values extracted from the experiments, indicating both a mixture between different adsorbed phases and importance of non-adiabatic effects on the effective barrier for oxidation. We simulated the reactions using kinetic modeling based on the two-temperature model of laser-induced energy transfer in the substrate combined with a friction model for the coupling to adsorbate vibrations. This model gives an overall good agreement with experiment except for the substantial difference in yield ratio between CO oxidation and desorption at 400 nm and 800 nm. However, including also the initial, non-thermal effect of electrons transiently excited into antibonding states of the O-Ru bond yielded good agreement with all experimental results.

Abstract
Using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we observe the breaking of the strong interatomic bond in molecular CO at low temperature on a stepped Cu surface. Since the electronic structure of Cu does not allow for the splitting of CO at such low temperatures it suggests that there may be a less obvious pathway for the process. Through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we can clearly identify products associated with the dissociation of CO and the subsequent formation of stable graphitic carbon on the surface. However, the dissociation of CO can be inhibited when the stepped Cu surface is kept clean from surface carbon. These observations imply that the reaction is driven by the presence of small amounts of weakly bound carbon at the surface. Density-functional theory calculations confirm that carbon atoms on a stepped Cu surface indeed are the preferred adsorption sites for CO, which increases the stabilization of CO on the surface and weakens the C-O bond. This results in the breaking of the C-O bond at the step edge via the Boudouard reaction (2CO(ads)→C(ads)+CO(2)) with a barrier of 0.71 eV.

Abstract
In pharmaceutical research, understanding the biodistribution, accumulation and metabolism of drugs in tissue plays a key role during drug discovery and development. In particular, information regarding pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and transport properties of compounds in tissues is crucial during early screening. Historically, the abundance and distribution of drugs have been assessed by well-established techniques such as quantitative whole-body autoradiography (WBA) or tissue homogenization with LC/MS analysis. However, WBA does not distinguish active drug from its metabolites and LC/MS, while highly sensitive, does not report spatial distribution. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) can discriminate drug and its metabolites and endogenous compounds, while simultaneously reporting their distribution. MSI data are influencing drug development and currently used in investigational studies in areas such as compound toxicity. In in vivo studies MSI results may soon be used to support new drug regulatory applications, although clinical trial MSI data will take longer to be validated for incorporation into submissions. We review the current and future applications of MSI, focussing on applications for drug discovery and development, with examples to highlight the impact of this promising technique in early drug screening. Recent sample preparation and analysis methods that enable effective MSI, including quantitative analysis of drugs from tissue sections will be summarized and key aspects of methodological protocols to increase the effectiveness of MSI analysis for previously undetectable targets addressed. These examples highlight how MSI has become a powerful tool in drug research and development and offers great potential in streamlining the drug discovery process.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate whether heart rate-corrected QT interval is a plausible prognostic factor for survival after major amputation in people with Type 2 diabetes. METHODS All people with Type 2 diabetes aged < 80 years who underwent a major amputation at two hospitals with multidisciplinary diabetic foot teams were evaluated and grouped according to whether their heart rate-corrected QT interval was ≤ or > 440 ms. RESULTS A total of 70 patients with a median age of 72 years were included in the study. During the 3 years of follow-up, 38 patients (54%) died. Heart rate-corrected QT interval prolongation was present in 51.4% of the patients and was strongly associated with 3-year mortality (73 vs 36%; P < 0.001). In a Cox proportional hazard model, heart rate-corrected QT interval prolongation was the strongest independent risk factor for 3-year mortality [hazard ratio 2.20 (95% CI 1.11-4.38)]. Treatment with metformin seemed to have a protective effect [hazard ratio 0.22 (95% CI 0.05-0.94)]. CONCLUSIONS The findings of the present study indicate that heart rate-corrected QT interval prolongation is associated with increased mortality in people with Type 2 diabetes undergoing above-ankle amputation.

Abstract
We show that coadsorbed oxygen atoms have a dramatic influence on the CO desorption dynamics from Ru(0001). In contrast to the precursor-mediated desorption mechanism on Ru(0001), the presence of surface oxygen modifies the electronic structure of Ru atoms such that CO desorption occurs predominantly via the direct pathway. This phenomenon is directly observed in an ultrafast pump-probe experiment using a soft x-ray free-electron laser to monitor the dynamic evolution of the valence electronic structure of the surface species. This is supported with the potential of mean force along the CO desorption path obtained from density-functional theory calculations. Charge density distribution and frozen-orbital analysis suggest that the oxygen-induced reduction of the Pauli repulsion, and consequent increase of the dative interaction between the CO 5σ and the charged Ru atom, is the electronic origin of the distinct desorption dynamics. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of CO desorption from Ru(0001) and oxygen-coadsorbed Ru(0001) provide further insights into the surface bond-breaking process.

Abstract
Vacuum space charge induced kinetic energy shifts of O 1s and Ru 3d core levels in femtosecond soft X-ray photoemission spectra (PES) have been studied at a free electron laser (FEL) for an oxygen layer on Ru(0001). We fully reproduced the measurements by simulating the in-vacuum expansion of the photoelectrons and demonstrate the space charge contribution of the high-order harmonics in the FEL beam. Employing the same analysis for 400 nm pump-X-ray probe PES, we can disentangle the delay dependent Ru 3d energy shifts into effects induced by space charge and by lattice heating from the femtosecond pump pulse.

Abstract
We have studied the femtosecond dynamics following optical laser excitation of CO adsorbed on a Ru surface by monitoring changes in the occupied and unoccupied electronic structure using ultrafast soft x-ray absorption and emission. We recently reported [M. Dell'Angela et al. Science 339, 1302 (2013)] a phonon-mediated transition into a weakly adsorbed precursor state occurring on a time scale of >2 ps prior to desorption. Here we focus on processes within the first picosecond after laser excitation and show that the metal-adsorbate coordination is initially increased due to hot-electron-driven vibrational excitations. This process is faster than, but occurs in parallel with, the transition into the precursor state. With resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy, we probe each of these states selectively and determine the respective transient populations depending on optical laser fluence. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of CO adsorbed on Ru(0001) were performed at 1500 and 3000 K providing insight into the desorption process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Considering the importance of glucose as a brain substrate, the postprandial rate of glucose delivery to the blood could be expected to affect cognitive functions. The purpose was to evaluate to what extent the rate of glucose absorption affected measures of cognitive performance in the postprandial period. In addition, cognitive performance was evaluated in relation to individual glucoregulation. SUBJECTS/METHODS A white wheat bread (WWB) enriched with guar gum (G-WWB) with the capacity to produce a low but sustained blood glucose net increment was developed. The G-WWB was evaluated in the postprandial period after breakfast with respect to effects on cognitive function (working memory and selective attention (SA)) in 40 healthy adults (49-71 years, body mass index 20-29 kg/m(2)), using a high glycaemic index WWB for comparison in a randomised crossover design. RESULTS The G-WWB improved outcome in the cognitive tests (SA test) in the later postprandial period (75-225 min) in comparison with the WWB (P<0.01). Subjects with better glucoregulation performed superior in cognitive tests compared with subjects with worse glucoregulation (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Beneficial effects on cognitive performance were observed with the G-WWB in the late postprandial period. The positive effect is suggested to emanate from improved insulin sensitivity, possibly in a combination with an enhanced neural energy supply. The results highlight the importance of carbohydrate foods that induces a low but sustained blood glucose profile in enhancing postprandial cognitive functions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES High levels of soluble CD27 (sCD27), a marker of immune activation, are found in several infectious [including human immunodeficiency virus type-I (HIV-1)] and autoimmune diseases; however, a direct biological effect of sCD27 on B cells has not been established. The aim of this study was to investigate whether sCD27, by binding to CD70, can induce immunoglobulin G (IgG) production from B cells. METHODS B cells from healthy and HIV-1-infected individuals were cultured with recombinant human sCD27 (rhsCD27), and IgG production was measured. The role of rhsCD27 in inducing the expression of transcription factors involved in plasma cell differentiation was evaluated. Furthermore, we investigated the impact of different cytokines on the modulation of CD70 expression on B cells and the relationship between levels of IgG and sCD27 in serum from healthy and HIV-1-infected individuals. RESULTS We demonstrated that rhsCD27 induced IgG production from antigen-primed (CD27+) B cells. This effect was mediated by rhsCD27 binding to CD70 on B cells leading to activation of Blimp-1 and XBP-1, transcription factors associated with plasma cell differentiation. We found a significant correlation between levels of serum sCD27 and IgG in HIV-1-infected individuals and healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS sCD27 may act to enhance immunoglobulin production and differentiation of activated memory or recently antigen-experienced B cells, thus providing an activation signal to antigen-experienced B cells. This mechanism may operate during autoimmune and chronic infectious diseases, situations in which continuous immune activation leads to upregulation of CD70 expression and increased sCD27 cleavage.

Abstract
In this work, a 10-wavelength, polarization-multiplexed, monolithically integrated InP coherent QPSK transmitter PIC is demonstrated to operate at 112 Gb/sec per wavelength and total chip superchannel bandwidth of 1.12 Tb/s. This demonstration suggests that increasing data capacity to multi-Tb/s per chip is possible and likely in the future.
